eanne Landacre worked at a boutique clothing store in her hometown of Lake Jackson, where her sister, longtime Sienna Plantation resident Dr. Suzanne Berry-Simpkins frequently visited. “I just loved the unique items,” says Suzanne. “And it was the same distance to go to Lake Jackson or go into Houston to the boutique shops. I thought we really needed a boutique in Sienna Plantation. We have working women, stay at home moms...lots of girls without a lot of time to deal with the traffic to even go into town to shop, much less the Galleria.” Suzanne got Jeanne on board to manage her store, Jeanne made the move to Sienna, and the sisters’ store, Rock 2 Royal, quickly went from dream to reality. “We have three daughters between us,” says Jeanne. “My Emma is 10 and Suzanne has Paige (11) and Tori (9.) We knew the store had to carry tween sizes and mom sizes. It had to range from edgy and fun to conservative and dignified. Paige actually thought of the name, Rock 2 Royal. Everything from rocking fun outfits to magnificent style—everyday to high-end couture—we’ve got it right here close to home!” “Everything we carry is designed to be flattering, comfortable and amazing...from tweens to plus sizes,” continues Suzanne. “Some of our vendors were Jeanne’s favorites at her previous boutique. Others, like the fabulous Johnny Was line, were suggestions from friends and neighbors who were trekking to the Galleria to find the items. Yet others, like 2 ~ UPCLOSE ~ December 2015
Rock ‘N Karma, we discovered at market. You’ll love Rock ‘N Karma... it’s edgy, it’s flattering, it ranges in sizes from 0 to 20, and it’s machinewashable and dryer friendly.” And shoes! “We carry several lines of flip flops and boots,” says Jeanne. “Glitterflops, designed by a breast cancer survivor right here in Texas, are beautifully encrusted shoes with orthopedic soles. Wear them all day, everyday with careless abandon...they come with a lifetime replacement guarantee.” Get the perfect outfit to wear to the ornament exchange, and the perfect ornament too! “We love the holidays,” says Suzanne. “We have a ton of seasonal gifts, from fun ornaments to candy houses, acrylic wine glasses, hand rolled beeswax candles and Jeffrey Levinson hardcase clutches (recently seen carried by Iggy Azalea.) If you’re looking for unique, we can help you find it.” Check out the store or check out a trunk show. Jeanne says, “We are so honored to know so many of our artists personally, and we want to share them with you! We will be featuring Caroline Rocha cuffs, Roma rain boots (with new designs by Duck Dynasty’s Sadie Robertson,) Rock ‘N Karma, and Jeffrey Levinson at our upcoming Trunk Shows. Join us for food, fun, shopping and meet the artist! Check our facebook page or website for details. We’ll see you there!”
Women may
come in all different shapes and sizes, but I find that they love diamonds at any age! ~Jay Horgan by Amy Sharp
A
girl’s best friend, they’re the “icing” on the best dressed woman and they just might be the best gift on your holiday list this year! Sugar Land resident Maggy Horgan, co-owner of Houston Diamond Outlet along with her husband Jay, says, “Diamonds are an investment for generations...an appreciating heirloom.” Similar to art or even collectible cars, diamonds are tangible assets that can be enjoyed. “Most every gift you give gets old,” says Maggy. “But not a diamond. It continues to shine, stays beautiful, and over time grows in value. It’s a gift that can be treasured for your lifetime, and your children’s as well. Some of the best engagement stories involve generational diamonds. There is just something so special about family heirlooms.” When you invest in a diamond, your buying price should be close to what you can sell it for at the time. Buying it retail just doesn’t cut it. At Houston Diamond Outlet, Maggy and Jay sell diamonds wholesale directly to the public. “Our diamonds are 50-70% off retail price,” says Jay. “We can do that because we are the diamond
dealer with our own manufacturing facility in LA...where we have access to the best diamonds at the best prices. And since we manufacture our own designs, we can sell direct to you at rock bottom prices. When you invest in a diamond, you should always know it’s worth. Everything we sell includes a full gemological appraisal for both insurance purposes and your knowledge of your investment.” There’s no better time than the holidays to start your family’s own collection and investment in family jewels. Jay says, “We’ve given each of our daughters a diamond pendant at eight years old, and over the years we’ve given them other pieces to add to their collection. The girls are always excited to wear their sparkles, and they just look beautiful. They love and cherish every gift, and Maggy and I love that they will have these memories forever.” At Houston Diamond Outlet, you’ll discover a huge selection of loose and certified diamonds that can be custom designed or modified to any design. You’ll work directly with a diamond expert (not a commissioned salesperson) to create a gift for someone you love that will last generations. With engraving available and potentially high returns, it’s easy to see why diamonds are the gift of choice not just this holiday season, but for every special occasion. Be sure to call 713-784-RING (7464) for your appointment by the beginning of December and your custom items will be ready to put under the tree this Christmas. Give the present of a lifetime...the gift that truly fits all! Jay, Maggy and their most precious family jewels—daughters Amanda, Cynthia, and Caitlyn—wish you and yours a brilliant and sparkling holiday season and a prosperous New Year! Mention this article and receive $100 off the purchase of a ½ carat or larger Diamond!

ruce Mills is an astute businessman who knows the value of attention to detail and customer service. He has led a pretty active life. He played football in high school, rugby in college and he even went on to join a company softball team when he entered the corporate world. Around 1982 some of the blood vessels in his left leg were damaged during one of those softball games. Although his left leg always gave him some trouble after that incident, it wasn’t until the last two years that both of his legs began to interfere with his level of activity. In a career that demands a lot of site visits, walking and air travel, Bruce knew he could no longer get by with ignoring the progressive swelling in his legs and ankles and a particularly ugly varicose vein. It was Bruce’s wife, Judy, who recommended Dr. Ulises Baltazar of the Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates. Her friend had recently been treated by Dr. Baltazar and was very happy with the entire process. Bruce said, “Judy and I both liked Dr. Baltazar immediately. He built rapport quickly and explained everything thoroughly. He even gave us some information to take home and read on our own. We felt comfortable with his background too.” (Dr. Baltazar is board-
certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery with special certification in Vascular Surgery.) Bruce scheduled his procedure two weeks after his first office visit. Dr. Baltazar took care of his surface vein issues and his deep vein issues. Remember that “particularly ugly varicose vein?” Bruce says that after surgery he looks semi-human now. From a business perspective, you could say that Bruce appreciated Dr. Baltazar’s attention to detail and customer service. The best part…recovery was a breeze. Bruce’s last procedure was done on a Friday and he said, “I experienced a little soreness that Saturday and by Monday I was back to normal.” Paying close attention to his post-operative instructions, Bruce was unable to travel to one of A&M’s home games. That’s when he learned he had something else in common with Dr. Baltazar, they are both Aggie parents. Dr. Baltazar’s daughter is a freshman at A&M this year and the Mills are an A&M family. Bruce, Judy and their children are all A&M graduates. Acting on a recommendation from his wife’s friend brought Bruce to Dr. Baltazar’s office. Experiencing Dr. Baltazar’s care and professionalism first-hand made him the obvious choice. Like Bruce said, “I could not have picked a better physician.”

Making Time

magine what it would be like to take advantage of what time you have to protect and nurture your skin. When your day begins at 5:00 a.m. and is a constant roar of activity between committing to a morning workout, getting kids ready for school, managing a family business, running errands, taking kids to Tae Kwon Do and baseball, then dinner and homework, it’s hard to imagine that you can carve out any time for yourself. Dr. Lin Humble has done exactly that. Because impeccable skin is important to her, she makes time in her busy schedule to maintain her flawless, youthful look. She says she has very little time to take care of herself so she has developed a routine that generates maximum results in a minimum amount of time. As the wife of Dr. Eric Humble, board certified Plastic Surgeon and creator of Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery, Dr. Lin Humble plays an active role at her husband’s clinic. Her own background in internal medicine gives her a clear advantage when it comes to choosing products and regimens that offer the best results. So what does Lin recommend for a daily routine? 1. Wash your face with a Clarisonic Brush. This preps the skin and allows for
better penetration of products. 2. Use a retinoid product. It is the only topical product that has been known to increase collagen. 3. Exfoliate three times a week for a nice glow. Favorite: Offects Exfoliating Polish by ZO Skin Health created by Zein Obagi, MD. 4. Follow with Ossential Growth Factor Serum Plus by ZO Skin Health. 5. ALWAYS use sunscreen before stepping outside. Favorite: Oclipse Sunscreen Primer by ZO Skin Health. Dr. Lin has two other favorites that she recommends on a more sporadic basis: the Vampire Facial which builds collagen and helps with fine lines and wrinkles, and the Hydrafacial, another treatment with proven results. Sugar Land Face and Body offers the full line of ZO Skin Health products created by Dr. Zein Obagi and only offered by approved Dermatologists and Plastic Surgeons. You can make an appointment with Dr. Eric Humble or one of the Aestheticians and find out which products and regimens are best suited to your skin. Remember, it is true that time flies, but the good news is you’re the pilot. So whether you’re running a marathon, a business, a family, or your own life...make time to take care of you.

enerations of satisfied customers can tell you that our local hometown plumbers make house calls...especially when there’s an emergency that requires their expertise. Imagine Jennifer Burkhalter’s surprise when she answered the phone at Alan’s Plumbing and talked to a distraught woman who said her usual plumber couldn’t make it last minute because he lived in The Woodlands. “You should always use service professionals who live in your neighborhood,” says Jennifer. “It’s the kind of common sense that’s easy to forget. But when there’s a leak or flooding, it has to be fixed immediately. It’s the same thing as calling an ambulance for a medical emergency. You want one that’s right around the corner, not one across town.” Jennifer’s husband and Alan’s Plumbing owner, master plumber Alan Burkhalter, their sons Luke and Beau, Alan’s brother Chris and apprentice Jaime are all trained, certified professionals who can tackle emergencies and non-emergencies alike. They are fully licensed to do plumbing inspections, leak detection, water lines, gas lines, sewer lines and garbage disposals. If you need a water heater to be properly installed, look no further. “A leaky toilet can waste up to two hundred gallons of water a day,” Alan explains. “That’s about $70 month. A leaky faucet can run you anywhere from $20 to $200 a year. These are not things anyone can afford to put off.” Having a fantastic local plumber has less obvious benefits too. “We’re your neighbors,” says Alan. “My sons graduated from Elkins High School. We care about this community and all the people who live in it. This bond holds us accountable to you, your family’s health and happiness, and all the things that make our Fort Bend County area one of the best places to live. That means we feel obligated to give you the best service at the fairest prices. That means we are responsive to your needs and questions. That means we continue to give Fort Bend residents the kind of service that a neighbor deserves.” No one knows this better than Alan’s kids. Beau says, “My favorite part of the job is hearing stories that customers share with me about the services performed by my father Alan or my Uncle Chris.” “Hearing the stories makes me grateful to carry on the legacy of the family business,” adds Luke. This holiday season, don’t get caught with a plumbing emergency that your out-of-town plumber can’t handle. Call Jennifer at Alan’s Plumbing and know that your plumbing problem will be handled with courtesy, professionalism and respect.

h, life’s little ironies. Most of us are waiting longer to have kids...and are better and wiser parents for the waiting. But once we start our families, we’re often in our thirties, forties and fifties and—where on earth did our energy go? Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. at Campbell’s Compounding in Sugar Land and his lovely wife, Rakel, have every reason to share your concern, since they have four busy little people themselves—Cole, Chloe, Caitlyn and Claire. And there is no better time to revel in the sheer joy of being a parent than the holidays, which is why it’s crucial for you to be at your vital best. What the years grant in wisdom they diminish in hormones, and hormones are the stuff of youth and energy and optimism. For you to deeply experience the fullness and richness of your human experience, to look and feel your absolute best, you might need to replace what nature took away. That’s where Campbell’s Compounding can help. Dr. Omar Al-Kazzaz, R.Ph, Pharm. D., one of the Campbell’s pharmacists in Sugar Land, says, “When you come in to the pharmacy for a personal consultation, we perform a saliva test to check
your hormone levels. Then we work closely with your doctor or our partner doctor close by to study your results. If needed, we can recommend a custom dosage of bio-identical hormones made just for you. All prescriptions are authorized by the doctor, and we monitor your progress together.” Imagine having your life back. Imagine actually wanting to do all the things you used to enjoy. And this isn’t gender specific. Diminishing hormones affect men as well as women. But where diminishing hormones are really felt is in the family itself...especially when eager young hands are pulling at you to decorate the tree, bake cookies, string lights around the house. Now is the time to reclaim what is yours. Schedule your consultation today. othing makes holiday planning simpler than having the right food at the right time. And it doesn’t get any easier or tastier than the award winning, traditional Tex-Mex from Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant. Named one of the Top 100 Restaurants in the Houston Chronicle two years in a row, and awarded Best Tex-Mex for 2015 by the Houston Press, Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant has been tickling the taste buds of Sugar Land residents for the past twelve years. Maybe you’re new to the area or you just never realized what a gem we have in our own backyard. You owe it to yourself to meet the Garcia family: Jaime, Lupe, Rigo and Leo. The flavorful, authentic Tex-Mex they serve is thanks to their family recipes that have been handed down for generations. Working behind
the scenes is Maria Lourdes, she has been with them since they opened their doors. And like their regular customers, Maria feels like family. Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant is known for their sizzling steak fajitas that are made by marinating the steak overnight in spices that are ground fresh on site…and served with handmade, fresh flour tortillas. Try the chicken fajitas or the richly flavored chicken mole enchiladas. You can stop by on Mondays or Wednesdays and enjoy $2.00 Margaritas with fresh tortilla chips and warm, homemade salsa. If you can’t keep your calendar straight, don’t worry...Lupita’s has Happy Hour 7 days a week and new drinks on the menu! Wash down your favorite Tex-Mex with a Skinny Margarita, a Tequila Sunrise or a Cosmopolitan. Want to make a good impression at work?
Volunteer to handle the office party lunch or dinner and then let Lupita’s cater the food. Worried about in-laws dropping in unannounced? Call Lupita’s for a worry-free fiesta you can order to go. Lupita’s is ready to take care of your catering needs or your personal dinner. Stop on by, you’ll feel right at home. As always, Jaime, Lupe, Rigo and Leo Garcia want to thank everyone for their loyalty, support, and friendship over the years...Feliz Navidad y Feliz Año Nuevo!

Next Stop...St. Michael’s!
The Guys Behind
St. Michael’s... They’re
Your Neighbors! by Amy Sharp
B
ack in 2007, brothers Brian and Dr. Shannon Orsak had an idea. Create a place in their hometown where their neighbors could seek quality emergency medical care. A comfortable place where patrons would feel loved and didn’t have to wait hours to see a doctor. Perhaps the brothers didn’t know it at the time, but they were pioneers of the now common free-standing ER. We had a chance to talk to them about what sets St. Michael’s—Sugar Land’s first free-standing 24 hour ER—apart from the others. “We are not owned by a big corporation or venture capitalists,” says co-founder and CFO Brian. “We live here, work here and our kids go to school here. We care about this community.” From seeing Dr. Shannon Orsak on “Health Matters” on KPRC Local Channel 2, to sponsoring community events, schools and youth sports, the St. Michael’s community presence is strong. “We are always out and about,” continues Brian. “And when you run a business in your own community, you really have a vested interest in service and attention to detail.” Details! This ER has them all. Co-founder Dr. Shannon Orsak graduated from the only emergency medicine school in Houston, and has worked at local hospitals including Memorial Hermann SW, St. Luke’s and West Houston Hospital where
he was Assistant Medical Director. He knew exactly what was necessary when creating his own ER. “We have an onsite radiology department complete with x-ray and CT scan, ultrasound and an onsite lab…that way you never have to wait for a diagnosis and a confirmation. We are staffed with boardcertified physicians and specialty-trained nurses. We can treat everything from allergic reactions and broken bones to high fevers and chest pain.” St. Michael’s offers private examination rooms with elegant furniture and flat screen television monitors (including pediatric themed rooms, a sports room, and a Harley-Davidson room!), a treatment suite for observation, and a comfortable waiting room. But don’t expect to wait. The St. Michael’s mission is to keep your visit thorough but quick... most patients are seen by a physician in less than 10 minutes! Dr. Shannon Orsak says, “Brian and I created St. Michael’s to combine medical efficiency and patient comfort for our neighbors...and we named it St. Michael’s after the patron saint of emergency medicine. We believe St. Michael’s offers the very best care...the kind we want for our own families. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, fifty-two weeks a year, St. Michael’s Emergency Room is ready to help. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all!”
At this time St Michael’s, due to governmental, bureaucratic decisions, is unable to participate in Medicare, Medicaid, or Tricare.

ould you like a $1000 rebate this holiday season? Compliments of TRANE Air Conditioners and our very own Jackson Air & Heat, you’ve got one coming to you. A big instant rebate is what you’ll receive when Jackson Air & Heat installs a new TRANE Variable Speed XV20i system with TruComfort technology in your home right now, during the off-season— either a $1000 rebate or 0% financing. And here you thought Santa Claus didn’t exist!
“There are a lot of benefits to replacing your old energy-guzzling unit this December,” says Brian Jackson at Jackson Air and Heat. “First of all, it’s a present that your whole family can enjoy year round. And TRANE has the best air conditioner on the market. The engineers at TRANE are the brilliant minds behind TruComfort technology...which takes a precision approach to cooling your home. Not only does it run at the exact speed necessary to keep you comfortable, it saves you a ton of money over
the summer when temperatures are at their highest. Our customers rave about how these systems are remarkably quiet and extremely effective at removing humidity. My own AC went out a couple of months ago and I replaced it with the XV20i. I can honestly say my experience has been the same. Quiet system, lower bills and better comfort!” Of course, summer isn’t the only time temperatures soar on the Gulf Coast. How many Christmases have Southeast Texans spent panting in the shade? While the rest of the nation is knee-deep in snow, Fort Bend County enjoys its abundant sunshine. Like most good things however, that sunshine comes at a price—80 degree and 90 degree days when we least expect them. “That’s why having a great air conditioner isn’t a luxury here, it’s a necessity,” says Brian. “We wouldn’t be three generations deep in the business of keeping you comfortable if that weren’t the case.” The oldest TRANE dealers in Sugar Land, Jackson Air & Heat has been servic-
ing air conditioners here for over thirty years. In 1976 Brian’s dad, patriarch Johnny Jackson (one of eleven children!) moved from Oklahoma to Sugar Land with his family. He quickly realized how important air conditioning was in this humid subtropical climate. and started this successful and honest Fort Bend County institution. “Our creed is do what you love and do it right,” says Brian. With Angie’s List “Super Service” awards and the BBB Award of Excellence, they are clearly living up to expectations. “We love our community and we love our work. Whether it’s a new air conditioner installation or a furnace cleaning, we bring you the best of our professionalism, expertise, cleanliness and punctuality every single time. That’s a promise.”

Entertain Al Fresco this Holiday
T
by Amy Sharp
here’s no hard-and-fast rule that says your holiday celebrations have to be in the house. A successful dinner party really doesn’t demand anything elaborate—it all boils down to good food, great company, and an enjoyable setting. So why not take the party outside? This is Texas after all, and chances are good we’ll have mild weather this holiday season. Kryshon Bratton, co-owner of Bratton Pools with her husband Michael, says, “The great outdoors is quickly becoming the go-to place for home entertaining. With decks, pools, outdoor kitchens, sitting areas, and a variety of other backyard additions, the line has blurred between which soirees belong inside, and which are ok to move outside.” Design your perfect entertaining spot with Bratton Pools. “Our outdoor living and entertaining spaces undergo the same design process as our pools,” continues Kryshon. “We go out to your home, take a look at your space, and get a feel for what you are wanting. And the possibilities are endless!” After an afternoon of splashing in the pool or keeping warm in the hot tub, gathering together with your guests for a snack or meal is the next logical step. What is not logical is transferring all of the food and beverages from the inside to the outside—or inviting your guests in, wet bathing suits and all. It’s easy to see why adding an outdoor kitchen is one of the fastest growing 12 ~ UPCLOSE ~ December 2015
home improvements. And don’t forget lighting for ambiance! Kryshon says, “From uplighting points of interest throughout the setting to imaginatively utilizing LED lights submersed in the pool and spa, we can create a variety of different atmospheres so you can change the vibe whenever needed. Imagine bright lights for nighttime parties and softer lights for more intimate dinner parties by the pool.” Really set the tone of your space with a fire feature. There is just something about the fascinating warmth that comes from fire bowls and fire pits that draws people together to chat, dine, or simply relax. Sounds like a wonderful holiday! And once the seasonal entertaining wraps...use your space for the neighborhood Super Bowl party. “Technology is advancing quickly,” says Michael, “and large-screen TVs are easily installed in an outdoor area or on a wall alongside a pool. Increase the excitement with a high-tech sound system. Your space can be as simple or as high-tech as you like!” Eating al fresco is one of life’s little delights. Why not take it to the next level and do your holiday entertaining outside! Give Bratton Pools a call or check them out on Facebook to see the possibilities. ack in 2007, local Real Estate Broker Cindy Beach successfully lost weight under the guidance of a Houston area chiropractor. “When it comes to doing things for myself,” says Cindy, “I always invest in me. I’m a three-time cancer survivor and I’ve undergone heart surgery. Medically speaking, I probably shouldn’t be here anymore. So when I needed help losing weight, I didn’t hesitate to seek professional help.” “A year ago, I read an article in UpClose magazine about a chiropractor here in Sugar Land providing a weight loss program...and I wondered if it was the same one. In seven years, I had put 20 lbs back on. This summer, I was struggling to breathe—huffing and puffing—which is not good for my heart condition or my lungs. I preferred treatment closer to home and I remembered reading the article...so I started calling around. I found what I was looking for...Dr. Steve Harris at the Sugar Land Health Center.” “When I met Dr. Harris, he was so kind and gentle,” continues Cindy. “And he has a Christian spirit, which is appealing to me. I told him my medical history and he gave me a hug and said, ‘I’m so glad I got to meet you.’ We talked about his weight loss program. It’s not the same one I had done before, but it was a program that both Dr. Harris and his wife had done and it sounded great. Given my medical conditions, Dr. Harris customized the program to my needs. I wanted and needed accountability, so I checked in weekly with Dr. Harris’ wife Lee to make sure I was staying on track. Lee also gave me her cell phone number so that I could call or text anytime with questions. I followed my plan and it worked. I lost my 20 lbs in a month and I feel great...like the Energizer bunny again! I tell everyone about Dr. Harris and this program!” Dr. Harris says, “What a blessing to have met Cindy. She’s a wonderful lady and I’m so happy I could help her. My philosophy is that weight loss programs should be tailored to your unique needs. I have access to new technology all-natural nutritional products that make you healthier, and my food management plans are always sensible and easy. Together—based on your health history, your dietary needs and your goals—we create a program you can stick to. I would love to help you!”

When the Holidays Aren’t A Season But a Feeling by Olivia Cane
M
erriam-Webster defines the word tradition as “something that is handed down.” That’s the lovely thing about the holidays, isn’t it? We are literally handing down from one generation to the next a way of doing things—be it the best way to make holiday cookies or the right time to light the candles. And there are as many traditions as there are families to observe them...from annual pilgrimages to see lights in other neighborhoods to huddling out in the yard with your brother-in-law and grilling the Christmas ham. For Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S., holiday memories are also built on family traditions... particularly the Lomonte Family Italian Sausage Party. Every November, Dr. Lomonte and his family get together to enjoy the Southeast Texas sunshine, share Italian food and music, drink delicious Italian wine and take turns mixing and stuffing sausage with their secret family recipe. “My dad’s brother, Uncle Frank, started the tradition,” Dr. Lomonte explains. “His son—my cousin—continued the tradition, and now it’s my turn, so my son Matt and my daughter Natalie are also learning the secrets.” Dr. Lomonte encourages his dental patients to apply an “annual tradition” philosophy to their checkups too. “Don’t leave your dental benefits on the table this year,” says Dr. Lomonte. “Most people don’t realize that benefits don’t roll over to the next insurance cycle. It’s ‘use it or lose
it.’” But the good news is that if you’ve been procrastinating on your dental care for a while now, Dr. Lomonte and his warm, welcoming staff are experts at putting you right at ease. “You could say that comfortable, pain-free dentistry is our own special tradition,” he explains. “There’s a reason our patients leave here smiling.” A graduate of Lamar University with a Doctorate in dental surgery from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston, Dr. Lomonte is a proud native Texan with a traditional Italian flair. “Be sure to make your appointment before the end of the year,” he says. “We are really looking forward to seeing you.”

REFINISH THEM

Major Updates, Minor Price Tags
T
hree years ago, Marilew Fournier purchased a home in Quail Valley that was built in 1975. “The house had absolutely no updates,” says Marilew. “And I wanted major updates...a modern look but without a high price tag.” While debating what to update and how, Marilew discovered Miracle Method Surface Refinishing at a couple of different Home and Garden Shows. “The kitchen counters were hideous white and ran up the walls to ‘make’ a backsplash. There was also what looked to be a Kool-Aid stain from who knows when and a burn spot from where a hot pot had sat on it. The Miracle Method refinishing process looked like exactly what we were looking for...so we called for an estimate.” Impressed with both the estimate and owners Jonee and Paul Barnett, Marilew contracted the kitchen job. “You would never believe it’s the same kitchen!” says Marilew. “The ugly stains are gone. They gave the previously straight counter edges a bullnose edge to look like granite, and the new finish has a stone look that blends per-
fectly with the backsplash finish we chose. It just looks marvelous.” “Paul and Jonee were our go-to throughout the project,” continues Marilew. “They checked-in often and personally handled everything...making sure there were no issues. All of their employees are extremely professional. They spent a lot of time preparing—taping and putting up plastic—so that there was no worry that anything would get messed up during the process. It’s a level of quality and care you just don’t see in every company. At project completion, Paul and Jonee were back to make sure we were happy with the results.” “Throughout the process of remodeling this house, we’ve had nearly a dozen contractors come through...not all of them would I call again. Paul and Jonee are different...I already have them scheduled to come back and do my guest bath! We updated the master bath the hard and expensive way— replaced everything—because we moved walls and changed the footprint. But since we aren’t replacing or rebuilding anything in
the guest bathroom, Miracle Method is perfect. We will be giving the white tile in the shower and the countertops a granite stone look, and giving the sink a shiny new white finish. Plus, the refinishing process includes sealing the grout against mold and mildew. It’s like killing two birds with one stone!” Miracle Method Surface Refinishing is an accredited member of the BBB, have an A rating on Angie’s List and have won the Angie’s List Super Service Award multiple times. “I can’t say enough about how much cheaper this method is over replacing or rebuilding, yet it looks and feels fabulous,” says Marilew. “And I just love Paul and Jonee. They are running a business that truly cares about their customers. I highly, highly recommend them!” Miracle Method Surface Refinishing 281-240-2284 603 Murphy Road (by appointment only) Stafford, TX www.miraclemethod.com/ houston-sw

A Veteran’s Day
N
to Remember
ovember 11, 2015 was a Veterans Day to remember for retired U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Charles R. Landry Jr. and his family. Together with representatives from Operation FINALLY HOME, Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land, Tilson Homes and the local Richmond community, the family celebrated the groundbreaking of the site of the family’s new custom-built, mortgage-free home. Landry joined the U.S. Army in June 2002 and was deployed to Iraq multiple times. During his deployments he experienced many firefights and vehicle borne improvised explosive devices. He suffered concussions from being knocked unconscious during rocket-propelled grenade and improvised explosive device attacks. He saw his entire unit suffer many casualties, which took a toll on his physical and mental health. On his final tour, he spent 12 months under rocket attacks while stationed near a main supply route. After 39 total months in combat, Landry suffers from a traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, major depressive disorder, and post-traumatic headaches. Medically retired from the military, this hero is ready to make a new start with his wife, Kathleen, his beautiful daughter Aylani, son Tyree, and his third child expected in January. A year ago, Classic Chevy Sugar Land set
a goal of raising $75,000 through their “Buy a Truck, House a Hero” campaign. For every new Silverado truck purchased, $250 of the purchase price went to Operation FINALLY HOME to build a house for a Fort Bend County-area wounded veteran. The Veteran’s Day groundbreaking marks the end of that campaign and the start of construction on Sargeant Landry’s new home. At the event, Classic Chevy General Sales Manager Mark Kolon said, “The earth we stand on is no different than that of any other dirt in Fort Bend County. However, to us—the individuals here and the Landry Family—it is very special. This land represents tremendous sacrifices and the spirit of many to honor a hero.” Landry hopes to pursue a degree in Radiology Technology and would like to eventually work with the VA to help other veterans like himself. For Classic Chevy, this is only the beginning. At the groundbreaking, Mark announced the dealership has committed another $75,000 donation to Operation FINALLY HOME towards a second home to be built for a wounded veteran in Fort Bend County. “All of us at Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land feel privileged and blessed to have the opportunity to work with such an outstanding organization such as Operation FINALLY HOME. They do so much for our nation’s heroes and their families.” For more information, visit www.operationfinallyhome.org.

Study after study links the impact of music on mathematical ability, abstract reasoning and spatial relations, which leads to improved grades in school. In short, not only is learning how to play a musical instrument beneficial to cognition and self-confidence, it is a skill that brings lifelong joy. Lindsey Cochran of the Lessons Department explains the importance of music this way, “As a society, we are discovering a fundamental truth about happiness—things don’t make us happy. Experiences do. A new electronic device is great, but memories and experiences last far longer than any toy or gadget.”
“Group lessons benefit your child socially, too. Kids are used to learning with other kids. A STRESS-FREE and
by Marie Page re you ready for the holiday hustle and bustle? The shopping for goodies, the hunting for bargains and evenings spent at cookie exchanges, choral concerts, holiday parties and more. When you are at home, you’re expecting company...or ready to deck the halls. But wait...you have to clean first! Create a little Christmas cheer for yourself by scheduling a cleaning with Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services. Owner Imelda Mahoney started cleaning houses when her children were little. Today she has a staff of hand-selected employees and her daughter Casandra helps run the business. “What sets us apart,” says Casandra, “is that we value family time...especially during the holidays. Our last appointment usually ends by 4:30. This ensures that we are out of the way for our client to be with their family...and also allows our staff to get home and enjoy time with their own families.” Even better than Santa’s little helpers, the ladies at Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services are insured and have undergone thorough background checks. They can work on a schedule that’s convenient for you—Monday through Saturday, and are also available to do almost any type of house service you can think of. Get your own home cleaned and give the gift of cleaning (and time!) to a friend or family member. “Time not spent cleaning leaves more time to spend with family or friends,” says Casandra. “You don’t even need to be home to get a clean house. Get your errands done, or combat that holiday stress with a massage, a manicure, and some me-time...and we’ll make your home fresh, spotless, and ready when you return.” Schedule your cleaning today...it’s like a holiday gift to yourself, and the perfect stocking stuffer for everyone on your list! Who doesn’t love a clean house?

New Year...New You!
W by Olivia Cane
anting to look good does not mean you don’t value what’s on the inside. It doesn’t mean you’re vain or superficial or lacking self-worth. It means you value yourself highly enough to want to feel confident and vibrant and pretty. It means you know that everything in your life goes better when you are feeling better about yourself. Ready to make 2016 the year of the new you? Dr. Jeffery Alford of Sugar Land Wellness & Weight Loss has built his practice around helping his patients look younger. “For tightening the face, we have a natural alternative to dermal fillers called the Vampire Facelift,” explains Dr. Alford. “By withdrawing and then spinning down your own blood in a centrifuge, we can extract a platelet layer that promotes healing. Then we apply it selectively to the right areas of your face, reducing wrinkles, improving your complexion and tightening sagging skin. You’ll look younger and more naturally beautiful without the ‘vinyl purse’ effect that comes with some dermal fillers.” If there’s weight you need to lose, Dr. Alford recommends taking the calorie-fudging and guesstimating out of the equation by eating nutritionally-balanced Medi-Health meals, which are pre-prepared and delicious. Need a little extra willpower? Neuro-Assist works with your brain chemistry to suppress appetite--no crankiness and no jitters. Discover just how easy it is to stick to your goals when you’re no longer hungry all the time! Or maybe you just don’t want to start the new year with the cellulite that just never seems to go away. “If you, like many women, have stubborn pockets of fat and cellulite that not even dieting or exercise can change, I suggest I-Lipo,” says Dr. Alford. “I-Lipo is an FDA-approved, painless and affordable way to contour your body and smooth cellulite--no needles and no downtime. You can get it done over your lunch hour and lose 1-2 dress sizes almost immediately.” If putting a little more sass in your stride as you start your new year isn’t reason enough to see Dr. Alford, consider this: December and January only, you will receive a 10% discount on services! Reginald’s perseverance paid off. Today Hardy & Hardy Inc.—owned by himself and son Reginald Jr.—cleans over 1200 Metro bus stops, 14 transit centers and have cleaned all three rail lines. Reginald Jr.—the Chronicle’s #1 high school football player from the Houston area in 1996—played college ball and earned a business degree at Western Illinois. His proud dad says, “We never let studying take a back seat to football. The degree was important.” “I did end up with two ACL surgeries,” continues Reginald Jr. “But with my degree I could have gone to work anywhere. I chose to come home. Dad planted the seed and built a great foundation. He’s done a lot for me both as a business owner and as a man, and I’m aspiring to take this company another 30 years and beyond!” Just as committed to the community, the duo started THE BALLER ACADEMY—a nonprofit youth mentoring organization. 10% of all residential jobs goes to THE BALLER ACADEMY. “Our biggest asset is we treat our customers like our neighbors,” says Reginald Sr. “All equipment is commercially insured. Our employees are certified, background checked, bonded and they arrive in uniform.” And check out these homeowner deals! First...the “one-side special.” “We live so close to the Gulf, that often times you’ll find one side of your house is beautiful, but the other is gross. Many companies will only give a quote for the entire home...but we don’t believe in cleaning something that’s already clean!” Or how about 25 feet of sidewalk cleaned for free? “For many, that’s the front door to the street—for FREE...with any cleaning service. To show our appreciation, we always offer a free service.” Whether you need your home, sidewalk, fences or business cleaned, see for yourself why the Hardy & Hardy Inc. slogan is “We Mean It, When We Clean It.” Hardy & Hardy Inc. ~ 713-728-8100 www.hardyandhardy.com

Edith offers you water, coffee, or even a glass wine. Then you meet the CORE team, and they want to know your story. “We know there are many realtors in Sugar Land. They put a for-sale sign in your yard, take pictures and put it online. Most times, that’s all the interaction. This is where we are different.
