You can trust that you are working with someone that is knowledgeable and has the resources available to take care of your most valuable investment...your home. In this office, agents do not compete with each other. Individual business owners collectively help each other. It’s an approach that’s extremely beneficial to our customers. When it’s time to buy or sell your home, honestly ask yourself who can do it better... individual agent? Or 360 agents with collectively over 1000 years experience all working toward the same goal. In an environment like ours, everybody wins in the end.” Today Keller Williams is the #1 real estate franchise in the world, and our very own Southwest Houston Market Center ranks in the top 25 in their region of over 700 offices worldwide. “Think of us as your coach in everything realty related,” says team leader Chad St. Jean. “We have an open door and open book

Introduced in 2009 as a way of celebrating the Keller Williams founder’s 70th birthday, RED Day—Renew, Energize and Donate—is Keller Williams Realty’s annual day of service. Each year on the second Thursday of May, associates around the globe spend the entire day away from their businesses serving worthy organizations or causes in their communities. “It’s truly a way to give back where you live,” says Chad. Local benefactors have included Habitat for Humanity, Fort Bend Women’s Center, the ARC of Fort Bend and the Fort Bend Animal Shelter. “It’s a lot of fun,” continues Chad. “RED Day is another example of our commitment to each other as a team, and our commitment to this community that we call home. Our biggest challenge is finding someone in Fort Bend who can use 360 extra sets of hands for a single day... we are always open to suggestions!”

A Doctor Who’s ALL Heart by Sara Adams
I
n this month of Valentine’s Day, when hearts and flowers are in big demand, it’s time to recognize a doctor who really is all heart...vascular surgeon Dr. Ulises Baltazar. His patients really do love him. . Linda Miller says, “When I talked with Dr. Baltazar, he listened to my symptoms and never rushed me. Even my husband likes him.” Kyle O’Reilly says, “I felt like I had a close friend taking care of me. It’s so important to have real faith in your doctor. I can’t say enough good things about him...he’s a major miracle worker and I’d recommend him to anyone!” His patients talk about their good results and their improved health almost as an afterthought. It’s his bedside manner that everyone brags about. It’s obvious that Dr. Baltazar takes time with the whole family. Bruce Mills says, “My wife Judy and I both liked Dr. Baltazar immediately. He built rapport quickly and explained everything thoroughly...I could not have picked a better physician.” Dr. Ulises Baltazar is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery Sara Adams in General Surgery with specialby certification in Vascular Surgery. He is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic, a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency that can cause painful varicose veins, venous stasis ulcers as well as leg swelling. If you have venous insufficiency, faulty valves in your veins allow blood to flow backwards and pool, leading to discomfort and more serious problems. Dr. Baltazar says, “Venous insufficiency can lead to varicose veins and can be associated with potentially lethal clots in the deep venous system called deep venous thrombosis (DVT). I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all treatment. We might consider scelrotherapy, phlebectomies, or time-efficient, in-office laser vein removal. However, some larger veins can’t or shouldn’t be destroyed. My professional and personal success is based upon the quality of care I offer each and every patient.” Many of Dr. Baltazar’s patients find him through referrals from doctors, former patients, co-workers, and even friends and families of former patients. People can’t seem to say enough about him... although maybe it was Karen Bankert who said it best. “Seeing Dr. Baltazar is such a pleasure. He’s laughed with me and cried with me. When Dr. Baltazar tells you the truth, you appreciate it. He cares about his patients more than any doctor I’ve known.” It’s true, Dr. Baltazar is all heart.

ellulite. Skin-firming creams can’t touch it. Diet and exercise won’t fix it. Genetics often determine who gets it and 90% of women are affected by it. It’s not caused by toxins, doesn’t just happen to out-of-shape people, and won’t go away with vigorous massage. It’s the bane of most women’s (and a surprising number of men’s) existences...and until now, there just wasn’t much anyone could do about it. For the first time in the history of minimally-invasive cellulite procedures, the FDA has approved Cellfina, an incredible new technology that has been proven to treat not just surface imperfections, but the primary cause of cellulite. In about an hour and with no downtime—in fact, in just one treatment—you can say goodbye to those embarrassing dimples. Results last for one year (with patient satisfaction in the 94% range!)...but even after two years, patient satisfaction remains high, surpassing any other cellulite treatment on the market. “Cellulite happens as a result of fibrous bands called septae, which are beneath the skin’s surface, pulling on the skin,” explains Dr. Eric Humble of Sugar Land Face and Body Plastic Surgery. “When the technology is applied by a specially-certified physician, Cellfina works by treating these bands specifically and causing them to release. Once the bands are released, they smooth themselves out—no more dimpling.” Sugar Land Face and Body is the first doctor’s office in Sugar Land to offer this breakthrough procedure...
and only a handful of offices in Houston are currently equipped with the technology. “It’s a very simple procedure,” explains Dr. Humble. “I use a small suction-stabilizer to pull the skin taut, deliver a local numbing agent, and then use a specialized hand-piece to target those fibrous, dimplecausing bands.” Dr. Humble’s wife, Dr. Lin Humble, recently underwent the procedure herself. “I’m fairly thin and athletic,” says Dr. Lin, “but I still had some dimples on my thighs that bothered me...especially when wearing shorts. And I tried everything...creams, massages, you name it...and nothing worked.” Dr. Lin had just undergone the procedure the day before we spoke with her. “I still have some swelling, so I can’t report on results, but what I can tell you is that the only slight discomfort was during the anesthesia. After that I felt nothing. It took about an hour, during which I played on my phone, listened to music and texted friends. I went back to work immediately after. I have a little day-after soreness, and I cannot wait to see my results and share them with everyone!” With so much excitement surrounding the procedure, Dr. Humble and his fabulous staff at Sugar Land Face and Body Plastic Surgery are holding a one-day event to answer all your questions about Cellfina. RSVP today!

Marriage Equality and Mediation Savvy by Amy Sharp
B
astine Law Group takes pride in advocating for all individuals in need of legal representation. The dynamic staff offers a proven approach to solving both common and complex issues. For attorney Florita Welsh, her amplitude of focus includes marriage equality and mediation. After this summer’s Supreme Court ruling, for the first time in history same-sex couples can marry in Texas. “With this change in law,” says Florita, “comes a host of possibilities same-sex couples did not need to consider before. Perhaps the biggest...could a current or past relationship be considered a common law marriage? Texas defines common law as a man and a woman that agreed to be married, and after the agreement they lived together in this state as husband and wife and there represented to others that they were married. Since the Texas Family Code defines common law marriage as being between a man and woman, is it possible for a same-sex couple to claim that they were in a common law marriage either before or after the ruling? That is yet to be seen. If the court were to rule that there was a common law marriage, there could be both an undesirable division of property, and tax implications related to the time of that marriage. The bottom line is, if you’ve ever had a relationship that might be considered common law, and there’s even a chance your ex-partner may someday try to get it declared as such, consult with a family law attorney to find out your options.” “People always ask why I prefer mediation to litigation,” continues Florita. “It’s because in mediation, people truly have the power...not a judge or jury. We are looking for an outcome both parties can live with. And there are just some issues a judge may not understand...but they are important. I once mediated a case where one party did not want the other allowed in their church. A judge would have never awarded this, but it was important to this person. Through mediation we were able to negotiate and create this result. That’s why I love mediation...it can be as creative as it needs to be to design outcomes people can live with.” Behind their motto, “Strong advocates today...fighting for a stronger tomorrow,” Florita and the team at Bastine Law Group are here to help you—no matter your legal situation. Next Stop...St. Michael’s!
Waiting is for the Birds!
by Marie Page
W
hen you were a kid, you might remember waiting in line to see the bank teller, or waiting in line to ride It’s a Small World at Disney World. Today you can deposit your checks with a smart phone and get a fast-pass to your favorite amusement park rides. With the possible exception of Black Friday door-busters, we’ve become a society that avoids waiting in line! Yet, when you’re in pain and need emergency care, you fully expect to wait at the ER. According to data collected for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the national average of time spent in the ER in 2013-2014 was 2 hours, 15 minutes. “That’s a long time when you are in pain!” says Dr. Shannon Orsak, co-founder of St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms. But did you know you have options? When you choose St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms, you’ll be getting all the resources of a full emergency room...without the traditional wait! When you’re in pain, every minute counts. Don’t settle for an urgent care center because you’re worried about the wait at the local emergency room. You won’t find a wait around St. Michael’s
ER...so don’t get too comfortable with the flat screen television, fancy coffee selection, and comfortable leather furniture. One patient says, “I had hardly started my paperwork before the nurse called me back!” At St. Michael’s ER, you’ll find a board-certified emergency physician on-site around the clock, as well as nurses and techs trained in advanced life support. If you need further treatment or a longer stay, St. Michael’s has agreements with nearby hospitals to get you priority care. The capable doctors and nurses are happy to help with breaks and sprains, fever and bleeding, or any instance you deem an emergency...around the clock. If that intense pain is a heart attack or if your child’s fever is actually a life-threatening illness, you’ll be glad you’re at St. Michael’s. When Dr. Shannon Orsak designed St. Michael’s, he knew that having an on-site radiology department complete with x-ray and CT scan and an on-site lab would streamline diagnosis. He says, “We can do a complete blood workup, a CBC, and take and send digital x-rays. The comfort and health of our patients is our top concern. And waiting? That’s for the birds!”
At this time St Michael’s, due to governmental, bureaucratic decisions, is unable to participate in Medicare, Medicaid, or Tricare.

hat’s your favorite invention of the last 150 years? Maybe you’re thinking of your television, cell phone, or iPad...but there’s a reason people call something “the greatest thing since indoor plumbing.” The second greatest thing should be a plumbing company that saves you money and has your best interest in mind. You can count on straight talk, honest pricing, and smart plumbing fixes from the hometown team at Alan’s Plumbing. Excellent plumbing from real experts for a fair price...that’s what you can expect. Huge operations take a lot of money to run...Alan’s Plumbing stays lean and efficient. Being a familyowned and operated company keeps their overhead low...so your bill isn’t bloated by extra costs. And when you call Alan’s Plumbing, you won’t be dealing with a stranger. Alan’s wife
by Olivia Cane Jennifer will answer the phone and assess your situation and see how they can help...and when a plumber comes out to your house it will be Alan himself, his brother Chris, one of his sons Luke or Beau, or his trusted apprentices Jaime and Trevor. They’ll show up on time, do the work carefully, and answer all of your questions. You’ll never have to compete for your plumber’s attention. Alan says, “We are personally obligated to stand behind our service and our pricing. We shop at the same stores as our customers. Our kids went to the same schools. You are our neighbors and our friends and we look forward to seeing you around town.” But how can calling the right plumber actually save you money? A leaky toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water a day, costing about $70 a month. A leaky faucet could run you
between $20 and $200 per year. And calling the wrong plumber could cost you even more. Alan says, “If a big company shows you their ‘Price Book,’ they are only showing you their prices...with no relativity to fair price. You could actually be paying as much as twice the fair price. We believe in giving our customers the straight story. In fact, we’re delighted to let you know that almost all faucets come with lifetime warranties (on the parts, not the labor.) Take a quick phone snapshot of your faucet and send it to us and we can identify your faucet brand. You’ll save money on the parts and you can count on a fair price to fix it. When our customers are happy, so are we!” Alan’s Plumbing

here are lots of great things about being in a home longterm. It’s a relationship filled with comfort and familiarity...not to mention a paid down mortgage! But years pass, and the home ages. What once was “in”...is now long “out.” Don’t let aging or dated counters and tiles spoil your relationship with the home you love. Jonee and Paul Barnett, owners of Miracle Method Surface Refinishing, can breath life back into those archaic areas without tearing them out, and at a fraction of the cost of replacing. Jonee says, “Miracle Method can completely transform your counters, tiles, and bathroom, making them beautiful again and bringing them into this century. We can transform porcelain, ceramic, laminate, acrylic, or cultured marble surfaces. Not only will you enjoy the new look of your home, but you’ll adore the price tag of our Miracle Method as well!” Some memories you want to keep forever, like the first time you met your spouse or your first Valentine’s Day together. Other memories––like the time you dropped a mug and nicked your countertop or the time someone set a hot pan down and left a discolored ring––are better left forgotten. Paul says, “Before we put on our miracle finish, we start with a professional cleaning and surface restoration. This miracle fixes chips, cracks, spots, stains, and lackluster finishes. Grout is completely cleaned, repaired and
sealed, so no more cracking and molding. Then our miracle finish is applied. Small jobs take only a day, and even a big job with a couple of bathrooms and a kitchen takes less than five. Plus we offer a warranty to protect your investment...because we know how much you’ll love your ‘new’ home!” Jonee and Paul have been married for thirty years. They understand the importance of dependability, thoughtfulness, and trust in any relationship. That’s why customer service is of the utmost importance to them. Jonee says, “Our teams show up on-time and ready to work. Paul and I are your go-to throughout the project, and we personally handle everything...and the work is not finished until you are happy. No Surprises. It’s a Good Thing!
H
ave you ever wondered what’s in your medicine? The drug itself, whether a cough suppressant or a nasal decongestant, seems fairly straightforward. But there are fillers inside of each tablet, capsule, liquid or pill called “excipients,” and they’re not always disclosed on the package label. So what happens when a pill containing food dyes, sugar, gluten, binders and disintegrants (the ingredient that helps it dissolve) turns out to be something you’re allergic to? That can result in a dramatic setback to your health. Worse, these excipients often come from a long and convoluted supply chain and may contain other potentially harmful impurities. At Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy, Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. or a compounding pharmacist on his staff is with your medication from start to finish. “We know everything that goes into your prescription,” he explains. “When we compound a capsule for you, the process is completely transparent. Your medication will contain the active ingredient or ingredients, plus the probiotic acidophilus. That’s it. No surprises. When you’ve taken non-generic, non-mass-produced medication, you will instantly see, taste and most of all feel the difference.” “The great thing about probiotic acidophilus is the health benefit,” continues Dr. Campbell. “Probiotics are friendly bacteria that help prevent some of the potential side effects of medication. That way, you and your family are at far less risk of upset stomach or vaginal yeast infections. And if your recommended dosage is particularly strong and upset stomach does occur, probiotic acidophilus re-colonizes your intestinal tract, putting you back on the road to good health.” But what if you or a family member can’t take pills? Campbell’s will compound a suspension for you that is also
free of unknown or potentially harmful ingredients. Not one drop of liquid will contain dye, gluten, casein, eggs, dairy, soy, nuts or any possible allergens. For allergy sufferers, that’s a dream come true. “As compounding pharmacists, we custom design your medication your way,” says Dr. Campbell. “Drop by today and experience the difference.”

Timely, Top-Notch

drian and Lisa Davilá O’Toole wanted a full update for their 1980s kitchen. “We needed to take down a wall,” says Lisa, “opening the kitchen to the living area. Plus we wanted to rearrange the appliances, all new cabinets, granite, a gas stovetop with an updated hood, and new trim and baseboards.” “We had a budget,” continues Lisa, “and were trying to hodge-podge the project ourselves, shopping around for flooring, cabinets and other items. We had read about Teri Gilberg, better known as the ‘The Re-Modelista,’ and we gave her a call for the construction. We talked back and forth several times. We were impressed by her thoroughness and her interest in making the finished product look excellent while staying in our budget. We showed her what we had picked during our shopping, and she gave her honest opinion. Some things we had chosen, like the floor, Teri thought was a good deal and recommended we go with it. Other items she thought we could do better. She would run and get samples for us, making sure we found exactly what we wanted.” “We’ve remodeled before, and our experience was that you never know when crews will show up, and sometimes you have to chase your contractor down. This time was different! Teri kept us up-to-date via text on what was going on. Her crews were sitting in our driveway at 7:45 for their 8am arrival. Teri checked in often in person, usually once early and again at the end of the day in case we had any concerns. She took on coordinating the entire project for us, even though some of it, like the floors, we had contracted ourselves. That was extremely helpful!”
When you remodel, inevitably, as the work progresses add-ons happen. Adrian and Lisa’s home was no exception. “When we did add or change things, Teri worked with us and her highly-skilled crews made the adjustments with ease. The quality of work is really top-notch, we are very happy. It seems like we were working on that kitchen forever, but looking back it was just about a month. That’s great for a full kitchen remodel. I’ve already recommended Teri to several friends, and I will be contacting her for the media room I have planned!”

IT’S TIME TO LEAVE
YOUR DIRTY
WORK TO THE PROFESSIONALS! D

id you know there are four major “hot spots” inside most houses that either don’t get cleaned at all or aren’t cleaned effectively? In fact, no matter how tidy your house may seem, failure to clean these four places can turn your dazzling showplace into a designer dust bowl. “They’re what we always seem to find in homes that we service for the first time,” says Casandra at Mahoney’s House Cleaning. “And they’re not easy to clean either. But that’s why some things are better left to the professionals.” Casandra has been helping her mom, Imelda Mahoney, clean houses since she was little. “There really isn’t anything we don’t know how to clean. When my mom launched her own company, Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services in 2007, she actually started it with a few ladies on our street. Now we’re a team of women who work together to make sure our clients feel that they’ve chosen the best company to clean their home. It’s why we’re not only fully bonded and insured, we actually guarantee our services.” Dusty ceiling fans are one of the biggest culprits the intrepid ladies at Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services do battle with. “Many ceiling fans are too high to reach with a standard two-step ladder,” Casandra explains. “But we have ceiling fan dusters on extension poles that allow us to reach even the highest fan. No matter how often you dust your house, if you’re not cleaning your fan blades too, you’re undoing all your hard work. As soon as you switch on that fan, dust will blow off the blades and all over your furniture.” “Speaking of dust, if you really want to know how dusty a home is, check the blinds,” continues Casandra. “Our rule of thumb when it comes to dusting is to start with the ceiling fans and then do the blinds. We use the blind-brush on the vacuum and go 14 ~ UPCLOSE ~ February 2016

blade by blade to avoid creating a dust storm. We dust these two areas first. Then we move onto the furniture and dust from there.” One of the last places anyone checks for Godzilla-sized dust bunnies is under the bed and behind the nightstand. The teams at Mahoney move all nightstands out, wipe them from behind and then get the baseboards and floor beneath the nightstands. Take that, dust! And the fourth dead giveaway that your house needs a professional touch? “Glass shower doors,” Casandra reports. “Hard water stains are tough to get out if left untreated. After consistent cleanings by a professional cleaning company though, you can see improvement in the glass.” “We never turn down a cleaning project! Call us. All you have to do is ask.” Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services 281-777-1526 mahoneyshousecleaning@yahoo.com www.mahoneyshousecleaningservices.com
HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY
“I thought I would never be without pain again.”
by Amy Sharp
Z
ahra Kamdar was skeptical of chiropractors until her 70 year old Dad was referred to one by his neurosurgeon. “Dad had major wear on his body,” says Zahra. “Last year we were traveling and he went numb and lost all feeling in one leg. A neurosurgeon said we could operate, but Dad likely wouldn’t survive the procedure. So he referred Dad to Dr. Steve Harris, the chiropractor at Sugar Land Health Center. Dad was dependent on others for driving and other self-functions, and as a result he was suffering emotionally. Dr. Harris said there were three findings on the MRI that only surgery could change, but five findings that his treatment could improve. So Dr. Harris put together an aggressive plan of action for Dad, and it has made a world of difference. Dad is independent again. He can drive and walk. We continue to be completely satisfied with Dad’s results.” This past September, Zahra found herself in need of chiropractic care. “I was t-boned in the driver’s side by a car running a red light. My lawyer referred me to a chiropractor immediately. Things were moving fast, and I went to the chiropractor recommended by the lawyer. But after 19 treatments, I wasn’t getting any better. I had multiple back spasms throughout the day, I couldn’t drive, and I was exhausted. I thought I would never be without pain again. The chiropractor recommended pain medication. But I don’t believe in meds until all other options are exhausted. Dad had great chiropractic results, and yet after 19 treatments I had seen no difference.” “Finally I scheduled a consult with Dr. Harris. He reviewed my MRIs and did x-rays. He was shocked by the damage from the car accident—four herniated discs in my neck and two in my back. He put together an aggressive plan of action and I stuck to it. After a week I noticed a drastic difference...I could lift more, had more energy, I was sleeping better, and I didn’t need the pain meds. I’m now in the last week of my treatment and I am perfect—better than I was before actually. I can lift heavier weights than I ever have in my life. I’m just amazed by the difference!” Dr. Harris says, “Pain and numbing is the body’s way of saying ‘something is not right.’ Surgery was not an option for Zahra’s Dad, and Zahra is far too young to be dependent on pain medication to feel normal. Her spine was injured in the accident and needed to be treated. Both Zahra and her Dad chose a safe and natural way to relieve and treat their symptoms. Call today and let me design a treatment plan just for you!”

FOR YOUR HOME
t’s that time of year...thirty-five degrees at night and seventy-five degrees by noon. It feels as though the weather is playing some cruel joke on the good, hard-working folks who leave their houses in the morning never knowing whether to wear short sleeves or a parka. Up and down the weather goes, and while one member of your family is turning down the air conditioner because he’s hot, another member is turning up the heat because she’s cold. Meanwhile, the two systems in your house are either creaking on or shuddering off, sending your energy bill through the roof and causing enormous wear and tear on the appliances themselves. Don’t you think you’re ready for a better solution? Brian Jackson of Jackson Air and Heat is an expert on the Trane variable-speed air conditioner and comfort control. Why Trane? “A Trane XV20i Variable Speed unit with TruComfort technology runs at the exact speed necessary to keep your home

comfortable,” says Brian. “Not only is it one of the quietest air conditioners on the market, it will save you a ton of money because of its super high efficiency. But it also has two other features that put it head and shoulders above the rest: zoned heating and cooling, plus remote air conditioning. And once you’ve experienced these, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them.” Zoned heating and cooling is exactly what it sounds like: zoned comfort. With Trane’s ComfortLink II Zoning System, room by room, zone by zone, you get to control more heat where it’s needed and less where it isn’t. So if you like to sleep in cooler conditions, you can crank up the air conditioning in the master bedroom. If your kids don’t like cold air blowing on them, you can make their rooms warmer with the press of a button. “I’ve had more than one customer tell me that zoned heating and cooling saved their marriage,” says Brian. “Just think--no more thermostat wars.” But for those who really want to move

into the 21st century, Brian recommends the ComfortLink II remote home management. Trane, in conjunction with Nexia Home Intelligence, and Schlage, one of the most trusted names in home security, have teamed up to create a way for you to truly be king of your castle. With just a web-enabled computer, tablet or smartphone, you can control temperature settings and keyless user-code access from anywhere! “With 36 month 0% financing or up to $1000.00 off in instant rebates...right now, during the offseason, is the best time to upgrade your system,” says Brian. “Give us a call...let us show you how to increase your home security, save money on your energy bills, and have total climate control. After all, your comfort is what we do.”

t’s February, and that means it’s the American Dental Association’s (ADA) National Children’s Dental Health Month. But silly rabbit, at Little People’s Dentistry all months are for kids...this one’s just extra special! It’s time for the Little People’s Dentistry Patient Appreciation Party! And seven years running, this year’s soiree promises to be the best yet. “I can’t wait,” says Dr. Bianca Sanchez. “It’s an opportunity for me to educate children on the importance of oral health and hygiene, while at the same time letting them know how much they mean to me.” Beyond rocking party must-haves like snacks, drinks, a Balloon Artist and a Face Painter, Dr. Sanchez offers a “swag bag” filled with goodies of the nonsugary variety (stickers, bubbles, modeling clay, coloring books and of course, toothbrush, toothpaste and flossers.) There’s also a Fun Foto shoot where kiddos get to wear boas and silly glasses. And Dr. Sanchez? She’ll be the one dressed up as the Tooth Fairy! “The kids just love it and I love that I can do this for them. I’ve learned so much from them. This practice is what it is today because of them.” A picture of the party guests will be proudly displayed in the office all
year as an extra-special “Thank You” from Dr. Sanchez to all her Little People. And it’s a popular picture. Dr. Sanchez says, “I have a lot of patients who’ll point to it and say, ‘Next year, I’ll be there too!’ We love the family we’ve built here over the past seven years, and look forward to seeing these kiddos grow right along with us! I’m so honored that I play such an integral part in putting beautiful smiles on their faces. Whether I’m brushing Diego and Gemma’s teeth at home, or giving one of my patients a professional cleaning...I love adding more beautiful smiles to the world!” This super-fun gathering is extremely popular and space is limited...so reserve your VIP invitation ASAP. Dr. Sanchez says, “I wish we had room to squeeze everyone in...but no worries if you can’t make the party. We strive to appreciate all of our patients throughout the year. For the little kids we’re always running coloring contests, prize drawings, and dental hygiene high-jinks...and our older kids love the new teen cleaning and examination room. Your teen can watch their favorite DVD, pick their favorite show on Netflix to binge watch, or play video games during their dental visit. We’re always having fun around here!”

Pruned Your Trees

N
o one can argue the beauty of trees. They help clean the air, add beauty and color, and provide shelter from the rain and sun. But with great beauty, comes great responsibility. Simpson’s Tree Service, owned by Cammy Simpson and managed by her two sons, Brandon and Nicholas, has served the trees of Fort Bend County since the early 90s.
18 ~ UPCLOSE ~ February 2016
Lately?
“We’ve witnessed firsthand the problems untrimmed trees can cause,” says Cammy. “Storms are probably our greatest liability. Your trees should be thin enough to allow the wind to blow through them. This county rarely escapes the spring and summer months without a serious storm, and if at all possible you want those trees to weather that storm, not break and land on your house or cars.”
And problem number two caused by trees... pests! “Certain trees,” says Nicholas, “especially palm trees, can host pests like rats, roaches, and snakes. If left untrimmed, the trees can allow these pests easy access to your house. The little critters just find a low hanging branch and scramble right onto your roof and into the eaves.” Trimming a tree or removing one is dangerous...that’s why local families have been calling Simpson’s Tree Service for over twenty years. Brandon says, “People can be killed by a falling limb or injured by a chainsaw. We use safety equipment to get up into the trees and to lower branches to the ground. Our team is insured...and highly experienced. We make sure things are done right the first time, and leave each site as clean as when we pulled up!” “Remember that pruning isn’t just for your overgrown trees,” says Cammy. “Proper pruning gets young trees off to the right start, saving more costly tree trimming in the future. From the smallest of delicate tree shaping to the most hazardous large tree removals—and everything in between—we’ll use our years of experience and skill to provide you with excellent tree service every time.” Have trees that need pruning? hat if you could put together an education plan tailored to your child. What would it entail? More hands-on with less homework and innovative learning techniques? Or more challenging and fast-paced? Or maybe it needs to be scheduled around your competitive athlete’s schedule? With her boutique school concept, at KnILE Prep Academy, Betsy de Vega has created a learning environment that caters to the whole child, individually. “What we do here is different,” says Betsy. “But we know it works...we’ve been doing it since 2008. We work in small ratios in a blended environment, using technologies and innovative strategies to reach each and every student. Here, teachers are facilitators of learning not deliverers of information. And every child works at their own pace. We have some outstanding public schools in the

area, but they have no choice but to cater to the masses. I’m here to help those that don’t necessarily fit that mold.” When you enroll your student at KnILE, not only is the learning environment flexible, time is flexible as well. “We have a variety of choices,” continues Betsy. “At our main campus, we offer full-day, part-time and home school options, allowing you to create a program that works with your family’s schedule. Or if your child is doing ok in school, but needs a little learning boost, check out our EduCoachNow (ECN) tutoring program...where we combine cognitive training skills exercises with enhanced organizational, study, and test taking strategies in one-on-one sessions.” And that’s not all. KnILE Prep currently has a partnership with Iron Cross Gymnastics to provide a school program for their competitive gymnasts. “It’s difficult to get in the practice hours required while attending traditional school,” says Betsy. “Our partnership allows these kids to get a quality education, compete in gymnastics, and still have time with their families. The students attend school at the gym...no more shuffling kids between school and practice. And no more missing school for competitions...no school on those days!” Interested in KnILE Prep, or the Iron Cross model, but live in Missouri City? ach year, CORE Realty’s ACE Nelvin Adriatico organizes an annual Adopt-A-Family alongside La Rosa Family Services, where Nelvin serves on the Board of Directors. La Rosa’s mission is to assist victims of domestic violence. At the holiday event businesses came together to adopt families at Jane Long Middle School. The families were served a hot lunch and presented with gifts. Families are selected from local schools; teachers may see some having to wear the same clothes everyday or have broken shoes. CORE Realty’s adopted family included a single mom, daughter, teenage son and baby boy. “This is our favorite event of the year,” says Avi Thadhani, another CORE ACE. “The items our family wished for were so humbling. The mom wanted lotion, the daughter a dress and little boy a soccer ball. We made sure that mama got lots of lotions. I wanted to see the boy smile, and I finally got one when I gave him a pair of shoes. It was a wonderful feeling of joy. They were overwhelmed by all the gifts, so excited for basic necessities. I had to hide my tears.” Sugar Land’s CORE Realty participates in many events in the community, including Adopt-a-Mom for Mother’s Day and a massive Annual Back to School drive.

Got Suspicions? by Sara Adams
“Trust your instinct.” That’s the advice Rodney and Christina Ramirez would give you. If you’re worried that your spouse is cheating, your employees are stealing, or a business partner doesn’t seem completely forthcoming...Rodney and Christina have the experience and knowledge to get the information you need. They are the faces of Houston Investigation Service. The faces you won’t see are their team of seasoned investigators. They will match the investigator(s) to the case. Don’t worry; you won’t see a bunch of overweight men in trench coats. Their investigators are men and women of varying ages and ethnic backgrounds with a minimum of five years experience and proper licensure. Some are retired police officers, ex-military and former CIA. And as Rodney pointed out, “When we’re doing our job, you shouldn’t notice us anyway.” When working with Houston Investigation Service you can count on the information you receive. Their investigators conduct themselves professionally, discreetly, and with strict adherence to all trespassing laws and regulations... ensuring their surveillance reports and videotapes will be admissible in court. Rodney had over 10 years of experience as a licensed Private Investigator before he and Christina opened Houston Investigation Service in 2003. He was good at investigations and found he had a real knack for finding out things and people. Now, Rodney and Christina are both licensed and have earned a solid reputation doing investigations and surveillance for most major insurance companies and several large corporations. They have been so successful that other investigation companies often hire HIS to work their more complex cases or cases they have had little success with. Not to worry, Houston Investigation Service does not subcontract out their cases to other investigative agencies. All of their investigations are handled in-house so their clients always have immediate information relayed to them. In addition to cheating spouses, child custody cases, and background checks, HIS has a high rate of success in locating people throughout the U.S., reconnecting loved ones or locating those who do not want to be located. You can have your own “private,” Private Investigator. Someone with your interests at heart. Rodney and Christina will meet with you, give you guidance, and keep you up-to-date with written reports and video recordings. Why take a chance when your instinct is telling you something isn’t quite right? The truth could be a phone call away.

But snoring’s more than a noise problem...it’s a health problem, too! Snoring impacts the quality of your sleep, which can lead to headaches, concentration problems, hypertension, depression, and cardiac disease. And it doesn’t take a highly-trained psychologist like Dr. Petty to know that fatigue makes couples irritable, impatient, distracted, and pessimistic. Putting an end to snoring improves your health...and your relationship! If you’ve been sleeping on the couch or in the study because your snoring got you banned from the bedroom...take heart. Much More than a Theatre in Your Neighborhood f you’ve driven down the Grand Parkway lately, you’ve seen the magnificent 180,000 square foot Santikos Palladium AVX. The building—with its 40 foot columns—is reminiscent of a legendary Greek palace, paying homage to the Santikos family heritage. Santikos Theatres was founded in 1911 when Louis Santikos—a Greek immigrant— purchased a small theatre in Waco, igniting his path to becoming a pioneer in the Texas motion picture industry in San Antonio. In 1927, Louis sold much of his business and moved back to Greece with his wife. That same year his son John was born. Louis became a successful film distributor in Greece, but fear for his family’s safety was strong after Nazi occupation was followed by Civil War in Greece...and the Santikos family returned to San Antonio and Louis rebuilt his movie business. After John graduated from St. Mary’s University, he became an apprentice to his father, ultimately taking over the business. John learned the theatre business from the ground up. In 2013, Santikos Theatres expanded to Fort Bend County with the Santikos Palladium AVX. When you set foot inside a Santikos complex, you are immediately immersed in opulent grandeur…this is not your typical movie theatre! Fort Bend’s finest entertainment destination provides the latest advances in cinema technology. “Six of our 22 luxurious auditoriums are equipped with AVX, providing the ultimate audio and visual viewing experience and the highest standards of projection quality. This includes 4K digital projection, wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling screens and Dolby
Atmos premium sound system,” says Art Seago, President of Santikos Theatres. “These screens are 80 feet wide, making them the largest screens in Houston.” Other amenities include 16 lane bowling with full service bar, cafés with a variety of dine-in or take-out options and Starbucks coffee. Four auditoriums feature luxury recliners and VIP Service with in-movie dining and friendly servers ready to bring your order directly to your seat. The Santikos Palladium AVX is also the perfect location for corporate events and functions. With auditoriums that have seating capabilities of fifty to 400, it is ideal for small to large corporate events, groups, non-profit outings, birthday party celebrations, and special occasions. “We are proud to carry on the legacy of John L.
