id you know chili recipes date back as far as 1850? And that prior to World War II, hundreds of small, family-run chili joints popped up throughout Texas, most of which laid claim to some sort of secret recipe? Maybe YOU know the secret! Beans or no beans? Tomatoes or chili peppers (or both?) Accompaniments? Do you pile it high with grated cheese, diced onions, and sour cream...or maybe you like your chili straight up with just a spoon. However you like it, whatever your secret recipe, it’s time to put it all
6th Annual Classic Chevy Sugar Land Chili Challenge on April 14, 2016 from 4-8pm on the line at the 6th Annual Classic Chevy Sugar Land Chili Challenge. That’s nearly $30,000 more than the previous year. The gauntlet has been thrown. Can we beat $50,000? I can’t wait to see... and taste...the competition!” Bring your Spicy, Specialty, Texas, or Bean secret recipe to the Classic Chevy Sugar Land Chili Challenge on April 14, 2016 from 4-8pm for a chance to win cash, trophies, and serious bragging rights. ichael Shea spent the better part of the past year dealing with some challenging health issues. The one constant in his heroic struggle was local vascular surgeon, Ulises Baltazar MD, RVT, FACS. Michael says, “Dr. Baltazar is a Doctor’s Doctor. A title he has earned without effort...because it’s really him.” At the end of 2014 and at the urging of his wife and daughter, Michael saw Dr. Baltazar for help with his varicose veins. Dr. Baltazar examined him, and identified stasis ulcers on the back of both of Michael’s legs. Michael had been managing his “weepy” legs that he thought might have originated from a scrape. Slow to heal, treating those stasis ulcers began a long process of multiple surgeries and various consultations to get to the root of the problem. Along the way there were other medical issues, including a bout of pneumonia. Michael says, “Dr. Baltazar made the situation more personal than most doctors would. He frequently visited me in the hospital—well beyond the standard and expected visits.” “Dr. Baltazar knows the value of really getting to know his patients and being there for them,” continues Michael. “It was a great comfort to me to have someone taking charge and seeing this through.” From the beginning, Dr. Baltazar assured him, “I’ll be with you all the way.” And that commitment never wavered. Michael says, “Dr. Baltazar always knew when we needed to consult a different discipline, and he knew who he wanted to work with. He prayed before one of my surgeries, and one time he broke out in song. There really wasn’t anything Dr. Baltazar wouldn’t do to help me get better.” Excruciating pain was a major roadblock to Michael’s healing, and Dr. Baltazar was able to create a protocol that allowed Michael to receive treatment and have his bandages changed regularly with a minimum amount of pain. Dr. Baltazar gave Michael his cell number, and there were several Saturdays that Dr. Baltazar met Michael after regular office hours. When Michael required help with his bandages at home, Dr. Baltazar trained Michael’s wife Lidia. Professionally, Dr. Baltazar enjoys the recognition of his peers as a physician who stays on top of current developments and innovative procedures...but his personal pleasure comes from getting to know his patients and treating them with the timeliness and care they deserve. It’s easy to see why Dr. Baltazar has been named “Most Supporting Physician” and awarded the “Patient’s Choice” award. Michael says, “Dr. Baltazar made me feel more like a friend than a patient. True to his word, he stayed with me every step of the way.”

Get Rid Of Your Double Chin by Olivia Cane
Y
ou know you’re self-conscious about your double chin when your selfies require extra attention (eye-level or high-level angles only, please) or you have entire days when all you see in the mirror are extra chins. Since people are focused on the you part of you—which is your face—feeling bad about your double chin can be a painful source of embarrassment. Fortunately, Dr. Eric Humble at Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery has a solution that is cost-effective, doesn’t require surgery, and has given double chin sufferers a whole new lease on life. “Kybella is a non-surgical injectable used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin,” explains Dr. Humble. “What’s remarkable about it—and why Kybella’s ‘worth it’ rating is 97%—is that it contains a naturally-occurring molecule which eats away at the fat. When injected the right way, it leaves all other cells happy and intact. There’s no downtime, and no need to worry about unsightly bandages. In fact, no one needs to know you’ve had it done but you. Most people will notice a difference, but they usually can’t pinpoint what that difference is exactly. My patients get a big kick out of that.” Anyone at any age can develop a “mini gobbler” (men, too—and what man doesn’t want a firm, sexy jawline?), but diet and exercise won’t always get rid of it. Even naturally lean people can suffer from what Dr. Humble calls “submental redundancy,” which is doctor-speak for chin swag. Sue Hand decided to try Kybella because she wanted her own chin and neck to have smoother
lines. “I really didn’t like the ‘thickening’ that was occurring,” says Sue. A friend told Sue about Dr. Humble and she scheduled a consultation and went through with Kybella. “Dr. Humble is very personable and very interested in the needs of the patient. He explained in detail exactly how things would go down, and his demeanor during the procedure was no different. He kept me informed of next steps and made sure I was comfortable throughout the process...which was short. It was about an hour...after which I drove myself home. I had minor discomfort for about 45 minutes and then it was gone. This was a week ago and I still see a little swelling, but no discomfort. I can already see things taking a different shape. I go back in six to eight weeks to measure my results and I can’t wait!” “I highly recommend Dr. Humble. Everyone in his office, including him, goes the extra mile to insure you are comfortable and meet your needs. He truly has your best interest in mind, both when making recommendations and during procedures. He is a great doctor!” Ready to slim your thickening chin? On The Cover It’s Chili Time!
Not Terrible at All... Just FUN! by Marie Page
L
ocal mom Norma Rivera knows a thing or two about kids being terrified of the dentist. “When my oldest, Daniel (now 15) was little, he had a very bad experience when getting some work done on his teeth. So bad...that he didn’t want to ever go back. He cried at the very mention of the word ‘dentist.’” Norma shopped around, even visited with another pediatric dentist. “I was not convinced,” says Norma. “So I kept looking.” She spotted an ad for Dr. Bianca Sanchez at Little People’s Dentistry. She thought the concept looked awesome...a dentist office that put an emphasis on “having fun.” “I took Daniel and his little brother Nathan. Naturally, Daniel was apprehensive at first. But his next visit was a totally different experience...he was excited to go!” What was different? “The way they interact with the child,” says Norma. “Every child is scared in a new situation, and Dr. Sanchez and her staff made sure Daniel knew exactly what was going on. They made him feel calm and secure.” Norma hasn’t experienced any issues taking her kids to the dentist since. In fact, her youngest, Rebeca, has never known another dentist. “My favorite thing,” says seven-year-old Rebeca, “is how they work on your teeth and then give you prizes at the end. I love going there!” A mom herself, Dr. Sanchez understands the possible anxiety in taking your child to the dentist. “Fear of the unknown is really not that unusual, and as we did for Daniel, we always first strive to gain the trust of your child. But if you’ve been delaying the dentist because you can’t bear the thought of ‘putting your child through that’...fear no more! I promise that at Little People’s Dentistry, we’re all about the fun! We clean teeth with tools like Mr. Whistle, Mr. Bumpy, and Mr. Thirsty and hand out goodie bags and tokens for prizes and games. Our kiddos love our coloring contest and the chance to win big prizes, and our teens love the video games and Netflix. We have so much fun...you might have trouble getting your child to leave!” Little People’s Dentistry “Because Kidz Are People, Too.” 281-261-0020 4706 Riverstone Blvd., Suite 200 (behind Kohl’s in Riverstone) www.LittlePeoplesDentistry.com

THE

A Keller Williams Experience The Rotunno’s Story
W
by Amy Sharp
hen Pat Rotunno and her husband decided to downsize, they knew the right real estate agency was key. “We’d lived in our Pecan Grove home for 25 years,” says Pat. “And with the kids gone, it was time. We’d done a few updates, but we knew it needed more. After several interviews, we fell in love with Kimbra Valachovic (Kimbra V.) at KW Southwest (Keller Williams.) We were sold on her honest and caring character, and the marketing strategies and abilities of Keller Williams.” Pat’s agent suggested freshening up everything. “Decorating is not my thing,” says Pat. “But Kimbra was a doll throughout the process. She spent two hours with me picking out ceiling fans and fixtures. She helped me choose new flooring and paint. In the master bath, we decided to keep the existing floor, but then had trouble finding shower floor to match. Kimbra went on her own to a store she knew in Houston and bought the perfect flooring. (I reimbursed her, of course!)” Pat’s gorgeously updated home went on the market in late summer. “The floorplan was a bit unusual,” says Pat. “It was 5,000 sq ft and had a loft above the master bedroom. After a couple months without an offer, we decided to stay...because we did love it there. The very day the stagers removed their stuff, Kimbra heard from a lady who’d been eyeing the home. She was interested...but was waiting on a business deal before she could make a move.”
It took some time, but the Rotunnos did receive an offer from the interested buyer. “Throughout the waiting and negotiating, my agent was a wonderful communicator. And after closing we were happy with the result. Just one problem remained...we had no place to live. A six week lease-back was negotiated by Kimbra and she took care of all the details.” The Rotunnos decided on a new construction home where they would get to choose all the finishes. “Again, decorating is not my cup of tea...and now I had to pick everything! Kimbra accompanied me to the showroom on the other side of Houston to hold my hand. When it was time for final touches, she was by my side. She is super-easy to get along with and she helped with everything. I could not have done it without her!” It’s easy to see why Keller Williams is the #1 real estate franchise in the world. “We are not your typical brokerage,” says Kimbra. “Our extensive combination of education, training and technology put us at the top of the game. Our office operates with the T.E.A.M. concept: Together Everyone Achieves More. And like the Rotunnos found out, this philosophy creates a win in the end for everyone.” Ready to buy or sell? Your Project, Your Way by Amy Sharp
evin and Stephanie Williams updated the pool at their home and added an outdoor kitchen with the help of Bratton Pools. “It was a two-phased approach,” says Kevin. “Pool renovation in the summer, outdoor kitchen in the fall. That way we got to enjoy our ‘new’ pool while the weather was still warm, and then this past fall we completed our master plan with an outdoor kitchen that incorporated design elements of the pool.” One of the challenges on the Williams’ outdoor kitchen was space...not a lot of room in the yard. Kevin collaborated with Michael Bratton on the possibilities. “He had ideas, and I had ideas. Maximizing space was key, and together we worked out a plan that included extending the roof line off the back of the house. For me, it was crucial that the new section of roof looked like it had always been there, like it was part of the original construction.” “Michael and the crew at Bratton Pools executed and accomplished the plan perfectly...down to the smallest details. The roof line looks incredible, and the outdoor kitchen incorporates elements—like the coping and split rock—from the pool, really tying it all together. From staining the kitchen ceiling to match

our new columns to mounting our outdoor television, every aspect of the project was taken care of and supervised by Bratton. The end result is just incredible...and we spend a lot of time out there. I love to cook anyway, and this let’s me be outside and mess around in the kitchen while watching football!” “Michael is a really nice guy to work with and he did exactly what he promised…within my budget. I would refer Bratton Pools to anybody.” “Your project, your way” says Kryshon Bratton, Michael’s wife and co-owner of Bratton Pools. “Everything we do is custom. From pool construction and renovation, to outdoor kitchens, living areas, entertainment areas, fire pits and patio extensions, we help you create a backyard that fits your personality. For Kevin and Stephanie, the endeavor was a pool update, an outdoor kitchen and a seamless patio extension—in a master plan project that we split in two phases. What is your backyard vision? ccording to Houzz.com, the bathroom tile trends for 2016 are cool and calm colors. So if you still see avocado green or mustard yellow each time you step in the loo...it might be time for an update. But hey, you’re one of the practical people! You’re not going to replace a perfectly good tub or countertop...it functions just fine. But did you know you can update without replacing? Jonee and Paul Barnett own Fort Bend County’s Miracle Method Surface Refinishing—the refinishing method responsible for amazing kitchen and bathroom makeovers all over the United States and Canada since 1979. “You absolutely do not have to throw out a perfectly good bathtub just because you don’t like the color,” says Jonee. “In fact, a total bathroom remodel is very costly...and the tub and tile end up in a landfill. But here at Miracle Method, we refinish over the existing tub and tile for significantly less money, and significantly less mess. You can even stay up with the times by choosing a neutral color, a cool and calm color, or our very popular Natural Accents finish that mimics the appearance of natural stone.” Know what’s even better than updating your bathroom at a super low price? We’re committed to personal attention, stellar service, and a bathroom or kitchen that looks brand new.” This newly minted satisfied customer says it best. “I was very impressed with the customer service from the beginning (booking the appointment) to the end result. Everyone was very friendly and answered all of my questions. The website was very informative too. The final result is gorgeous and I would do it again in a heartbeat. If you have a bathroom that is driving you crazy, don’t wait any longer! Miracle Method will be your answer. My only regret is that I did not find out about Miracle Method sooner. Design Through Construction, A Contractor You Can Trust by Marie Page hen Nelda Adams was ready to renovate her two bathrooms and do sheetrock repair and paint in the bedrooms, she recalled reading about several satisfied customers of Teri Gilberg, better known as the “The Re-Modelista,” right here in UpClose magazine. “Teri came over for a consultation,” says Nelda, “and it went really well. She was very energetic, and it was clear that her passion was to be on-time and within our budget. She was extremely open and honest and I immediately trusted her. I just liked the way she operated.” Teri helped Nelda get the design process started by sharing ideas, looking at concepts on Houzz.com and accompanying her to design showrooms, including Natural Stone Gallery and ProSource. “The individuals Teri introduced me to at these vendors were extremely helpful,” says Nelda. “With Teri’s help, the design process was kicked off in the right direction and I was able to put together exactly what I wanted.” With a plan in place, Nelda would meet with Teri and her contractor Hector three times before beginning construction. “Hector and Teri are a great team,” says Nelda. “Hector made sure he knew exactly what we wanted and had the correct measurements before we ordered the materials. I really trusted them, which was great since they would be working at my home when I wasn’t there. The two kept everything on track, and Teri texted me every step of the way with the progress. Hector and his crews do a fantastic job. As the work carried on, I came to the realization that if Hector suggested something...it was the way to go. I trusted his judgement.” “Subcontractors were hired for the counters and shower glass, and the people that came in were top-notch. Teri took care of lining up everything, making sure everybody was doing what they were supposed to do. I’m very pleased with the end result. We did it in two projects, and each project took exactly the amount of time Teri told me it would take. Three

weeks for the hall bath and bedrooms, four weeks for the master bath.” “I absolutely recommend Teri and her team to anyone interested in great work that’s on time and within budget. They’re trustworthy and they’re fantastic!”

ids. One day you’re showing them how to throw a football or tie a shoelace. The next day you blink and they’re all grown up, ready to show you a thing or two—about life, yourself, or in the case of master plumber Alan Burkhalter and his sons, just how well everything he taught them about plumbing actually stuck. The good news is they paid attention in a big way. And the results? “They’re first-rate plumbers,” says Alan. “I couldn’t ask for a better crew.” It’s not usually the case, three boys who all show an interest in what dad is doing. But Alan taught his boys and he taught them well. “Now I get to watch. Even the tough cases don’t faze them. There’s something to be said for learning how to do things from an early age. All three of my boys manage to strike a perfect balance between understanding new technology while still using
time-honored, nuts-and-bolt mechanical skill. Even if I wasn’t their dad, I’d call them to fix whatever plumbing problems I had.” Watch dad, learn from dad, now work for dad. At Alan’s Plumbing, it’s the same family and same quality of work. “This may sound like something your typical business owner might say,” continues Alan, “but we are truly committed to bringing you the best work at the fairest price possible. Why? Because we
live here too. Your kids and my kids grew up together. We belong to the same community you do, and that happens to be the community we serve. My experience with cleaning services prior was not good. I had encountered both stealing and just poor quality in the work...and at the time I was trying to take care of it myself. It was through a lucky google search that I found the ladies at Mahoney’s.” Mahoney’s House Cleaning has been with Melissa through three houses and lots of life changes. They’ve done general cleaning, move-in cleaning and move-out cleaning for her. They’re at her current home six days a week, not only keeping up the general and deep cleaning, but also helping with the non-stop laundry and the sweeping up behind the dogs. “I can’t say enough about them,” says Melissa. “I just love them and I trust them...and they understand everything. Our life can get hectic and really...they keep the peace by keeping the house up to the standards of my perfectionist husband. Plus, the regular cleaning keeps the house in great shape.” Imelda Mahoney, the founder of Mahoney’s House Cleaning, is a mother herself and understands the need for a safe and clean home. When her children were little she picked up some houses to clean for extra money. Her business grew on the foundation of her strict philosophy of providing outstanding service with a personal touch. In 2007, Imelda launched Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services with a few ladies on her street. “We are a team of women working together and helping each other,” says her daughter Casandra, who now works the business with her mom. “We are fully bonded and insured, and mom’s philosophy is still the

We are available to do almost any type of house service you can think of...because we would never turn down a cleaning project! Our list of services is always growing based on the requests of our customers. We guarantee our services and work hard to make sure our clients feel that they have chosen the best company to clean their house.” “I’ll never look elsewhere for cleaning services ever again!” says Melissa. “I recommend Mahoney’s all the time. t’s hard for people who don’t live in the greater Houston area to wrap their heads around the fact that come March, summer can be ON in these parts. While the rest of the nation slumbers beneath a thick blanket of snow, shoveling sidewalks, salting overpasses and bundling wool scarves up to their eyeballs, people in southeast Texas may be wearing T-shirts and shorts. It’s absolutely fantastic to call this climate home, but let’s face it...the only thing that makes living in a subtropical climate like ours remotely bearable is air conditioning! To ensure that your air conditioning unit isn’t racking up national debt-worthy energy bills this summer, the most important thing you can do is schedule regular tune-ups. An air conditioner that cools unevenly (some rooms are hot, other rooms are too cold) or one that’s constantly running but failing to cool at all is like setting fire to your paycheck. And few experts are better at fixing problems before they start than Fort Bend

County’s very own Jackson Air and Heat. “Our tune-ups are 100% comprehensive,” explains Brian Jackson. “Which means they include optimization to improve your air conditioner’s performance making sure the system is running as efficiently as possible. With regular tune-ups your equipment will last longer and we do all we can to prevent potential breakdowns. Murphy’s Law tells us that if an air conditioner is going to stop working, it’s always going to happen on the hottest weekend of the year or when you have company over. Our goal is to make sure you don’t have to go through that.” But if your unit barely made it through last summer, it may be time to replace it with a reliable, high-efficiency Trane XV20i Variable Speed unit with TruComfort technology. “It’s what I use in my own home and it’s amazing,” says Brian. “A Trane Variable Speed unit runs at the exact speed necessary to keep your home comfortable. Not only is it one of the quietest air conditioners on the market, it will save you a
ton of money because of its super high efficiency. Better yet, it’s completely effective at removing humidity from your home, which means it’s perfectly suited for our ultrahumid conditions.” So for those of you whose air conditioners are on their last wheeze, take heart. Sugar Land’s oldest independent Trane dealer, Jackson Air and Heat, can offer you 0% financing or fantastic instant rebates on a brand new Trane system. hat’s what Barbie Perry told us about her pharmacists at Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. And she should know. She’s been with them for more than five years! “I take thyroid medication that’s compounded,” says Barbie. “I had been getting it filled at my doctor’s office in Katy...but that was a long drive to get my refills, and I had heard great things about Campbell’s Compounding right here in Sugar Land. I dropped in one day and met with Dr. Lance Campbell himself. I was extremely

impressed with him, his staff, and the way they communicated with me about my medication.” Today, Barbie uses Campbell’s Compounding for both her thyroid medicine and bio-identical hormone replacement. “The thing about both of these conditions,” says Barbie, “is that when things are not right, you are really not feeling well. It can be very frustrating to just ‘get a prescription and see what happens.’ That doesn’t happen at Campbell’s. They take a more holistic approach, looking at your whole health picture and walking you through the process. This is not big medicine. They take the time to take care of you. I recently lost some weight through marathon training, and was starting to not feel well. Turned out since I was leaner, my thyroid dosage was too high. Campbell’s navigated me through the process of cutting back the dosage, and I feel great again. Ready for my first half marathon!” When you make Campbell’s Compounding your pharmacy, you’re never just a number...and they make sure you’re never lost in the shuffle. “It’s true!” says Barbie. “Every time I walk in there—no matter who is working—they know me by name and my items are ready...which of course I already knew because I received a friendly text that my prescriptions were ready

Advocating for the Good
by Amy Sharp alerie Waddell, a partner with the Bastine Law Group, is a true freedom fighter. “I’m in criminal court 70% of the time,” says Valerie, “advocating for clients against the system. There’s a lot of injustices in this world. When they say, ‘Don’t Mess with Texas,’ they mean it. Our legal system is tough on crime. I’m here to help the good people stay where they belong...in their homes.” Valerie started working with Ronique Robinson, founder of Bastine Law Group, as a contractor back in 1999 when she got out of law school. After a short stint as general counsel elsewhere, Valerie returned to work with Ronique. “Ronique is exactly the kind of lawyer you want as a partner. She’s extremely knowledgeable, and when you need an assist...she’s there for you. Her specialty today is family law, but she started in criminal law and her dad was a criminal lawyer. She really helped me along, made me who I am today. Not everybody would take on a young lawyer like that. I’m very grateful to Ronique.” And Valerie’s passion today...she’s not afraid to take a case to trial that needs to be taken. When we spoke to Valerie she had just gotten a significant case dismissed. “My client in this case was a grandmother,” says Valerie. “She was in the car with her husband and several family members, including her step-granddaughter, when she was involved in an accident. The entire family was life-flighted from the scene, and her step-granddaughter passed away from injuries sustained in the accident. Although tests run at the hospital showed no alcohol in the grandmother’s system, she was charged with the murder of her step-granddaughter and intoxicated assault of her own child. I’ve been working this case since last August. Finally—in mid February—the case was dismissed. Sometimes tragedies happen...and every tragedy is not a crime. This woman is not a criminal.” Fighting the good fight...that’s what they do at Bastine Law Group. “We are here to help you—no matter your legal situation,” says Ronique. “Valerie is just one of our many ‘Strong advocates today...fighting for a better tomorrow.’ Let us know how we can help you.” Ronique Bastine Robinson

Next Stop...St. Michael’s! The Best
Care Experience Ever W
“As Jimmy learned,” says Dr. Shannon Orsak, co-founder of St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms, “our ER has an on-site radiology department complete with x-ray and CT scan, ultrasound and an onsite lab…you never have to wait for a diagnosis and a confirmation. We are fully staffed with board-certified physicians

hen Jimmy Hassell woke up at 3am in excruciating pain, he went to the nearest hospital ER. “My experience was terrible,” says Jimmy. “They couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me, and after about an hour they decided to just give me morphine for the pain. I pulled out my IV, walked out, and went back home to bed.” But by 6am Jimmy was awake again...with a new idea that the Good Lord had put in his head. “I thought I needed to go to St. Michael’s. I’d heard good things...that it was the place to go. And my wife is the counselor at the school Dr. Shannon Orsak’s children attend. Not sure why I didn’t think of it before...but I headed over there immediately.” “It was the most awesome experience I’ve ever had in any type of care. They took me in right away. Even before he ran a test— just hearing my symptoms—the doctor told me he was 99% sure it was kidney stones. Sure enough, the x-ray (which they
did on-site!) revealed kidney stones the size of a berry. I’d never had them in my life. Then the doctor asked if I was experiencing back pain. I did have recurring pain... and I’d chalked it up to something I’d done in one of my outdoor activities. Turns out, the kidney stones were the cause. They told me what to do, prescribed medication, and I was on my way less than two hours after I arrived. Just amazing.” Feeling great, Jimmy is ready to get back to hunting and fishing. He’s the Executive Director of Greater Houston Christian Outdoor Fellowship, the organization that presents the gospel to men, women, and children while doing the things they love—hunting and fishing. “We do father/child trips and husband/wife trips. We hunt or fish, and wind down with a campfire devotion and about a half hour of gospel geared to our audience. Our fellowship events are open to anyone and everyone.” Visit www.ghcof. org for more information about Greater Houston Christian Outdoor Fellowship.

eople may choose Detox Trio to jumpstart a successful weight-loss program or get glowing skin and a flat tummy... but all those are side benefits. The primary purpose of Robin Anthony’s products is to eliminate nasty parasites from your system! One woman wrote, “Yesterday I went to the bathroom like I normally do in the morning since starting the Detox Trio. I noticed in my stool clear white round shapes with specks mixed in. Today I passed two clear white round shapes. At first I thought it was the paper for the toilet seat cover, but that was still intact on the toilet! I wanted some type of answer...and my search turned up hookworm eggs. I expected to pass some things with the detox, but imagine having something come out of you that isn’t something you’ve eaten recently. All I can say to the skeptics is the product really works!” It can be hard to believe you’re walking around with parasites in your system. You don’t necessarily feel them, and you don’t see them. It’s a case of “out of sight, out of mind.” However, there are multiple symptoms. Things like gas, bloating, constipation, an inability to lose weight, craving alcohol and sugar, having rashy skin, teary eyes, itching and crawling sensations all over your body...and dozens more! In fact, there’s a 90% chance your body is infested with parasites. Maybe you still don’t think you could have parasites. Mike sure didn’t think he did! He got Detox Trio to jump start his weight loss goals. Then one fateful day he looked down after using the restroom and saw a huge dead

parasite that he just passed! He was dumbfounded. He took a picture and sent it to Robin in total shock. Detox Trio vanquished his cravings for bread, wine and sweets, put a stop to his itching at night, and helped him lose weight...and it worked by eliminating parasites from his system! Parasites in your system make you seriously crave sugar, soda and junk food. Conquering them with Detox Trio will spark your weight loss. You need every tool available to conquer tricky parasites and reclaim your best health. Happy customers have been calling Robin’s Organic Tea Leaves the “Detox Trio Booster.” Combining the Detox Trio with Organic Tea Leaves and a cleaner diet can give you feeling of a new you. One woman wrote, “I have been taking the Organic Tea Leaves twice a week for about six weeks. I no longer suffer from joint pain and can now fully exercise without discomfort...I’ve also lost 15 pounds! If you don’t get a good night’s rest, you’re on edge—especially if it’s recurring. Thanks to the Organic Tea Leaves, my mood is better, my heat flashes have cooled off and I can sleep through the night. My energy, libido, cholesterol and diabetes are improving! Thank you so much, Robin!” Are you ready for a makeover from the inside out? You can banish parasites and reclaim your life with Robin Anthony’s Renu Herbs.

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY
Lose Weight while Getting Healthier...
It’s a Great Investment! by Sara Adams
B
elinda Ibenthal knows a good investment when she sees it...after all she has worked for a well known brokerage investment firm for the past seventeen years. In the beginning of 2015 she had just finished her own treatment for breast cancer, and began training for the AVON 39 Walk to End Breast Cancer. She wasn’t sure if she could actually walk 39 miles in two days after everything she had been through, but she was willing to invest the time and effort to see it through. With the support of her husband David, co-workers, friends and fellow walkers, she made it. At the beginning of this year, Belinda just didn’t feel comfortable. She had gained some weight and wasn’t feeling very energetic. She was at that point where she was going to have to spend some money on larger clothes. That’s when it hit her. “Instead of investing in a new wardrobe,” she said, “I would rather invest in myself.” Encouraged by her friend’s weight loss success, Belinda made an appointment with Dr. Steve Harris at Sugar Health Center. Dr. Harris, along with his wife, Lee, counseled and encouraged Belinda throughout the process. They created a sensible, easy foodmanagement plan that was tailored specifically to her. Dr. Harris and Lee educated Belinda in a better way of eating, helped her get off sugar, and taught her how to monitor her alkalinity. Even though Belinda lost 15 pounds in six weeks and feels more comfortable in her clothes, she says, “The weight loss was just a bonus. Dr. Harris and Lee put me on a healthier path. They gave me life-saving information and taught me a different way of eating and caring for myself. I feel better than I’ve felt in a year. I have more energy...and I was able to get off a medication that I was trying to get off of before...but I wasn’t able to until now.” Dr. Harris says, “The reason this weight loss approach is so brilliant is because it makes you healthier in six key ways. It’s safe, we use only natural products, you get quicker results, and it does not require a lot of discipline nor a change in exercise. Like I did for Belinda, together—based on your health history, your dietary needs and your goals—we create a program you can stick to. It’s a great investment!”

xciting things are happening at Fort Bend Music Center.” says Music Education Director Craig Latson. “With the recent addition of our Tunes for Toddlers program and our Keyboard Encounter for Seniors (KES) program, we now offer music lessons starting at age 18 months to 110 (and beyond!) Nobody does that!” The 18-month to three-years of age crowd may not be ready to play an instrument, but they can learn the rhythm. “This program is something great,” says Craig. “It’s a fantastic bonding opportunity for children and their parents. We sing, dance, twirl and march to the beat...sometimes with the help of our friendly lions and tigers and bears. A great time is always had by all!” But know who’s having more fun than the toddlers? The seniors! “We had no idea our KES program would generate so much interest,” says Craig. “Our three classes on the schedule are nearly full, and we’re currently presenting the program to different assisted living locations in the area. This piano pro-

Are You Satisfied With Your Child’s Education?

f the answer’s not a resounding “YES”...don’t fret. You have options! Learning Specialist Betsy de Vega, in conjunction with her boutique school concept KnILE Prep Academy, has the formula you need to get back on track. “When it comes to education,” says Betsy, “no two children are alike. Some of you are concerned about social issues at school. Others lose sleep over academic struggles. Some have gifted kids not being challenged...and others have a diagnosed or not-yet-diagnosed learning disability. Still others have demanding athletic schedules that don’t lend themselves to traditional school calendars.” But when you enroll your student at KnILE, both the learning environment and the schedule are flexible. “We have a variety of choices,” says Betsy. “At our main campus, we offer full-day, part-time and home school options...allowing you to create a program that works for your family. We work in small ratios in a blended environment, using technologies and innovative strategies to reach each and every student...and every child works at their own pace. The end result is that we are catering to your whole child, allowing them to learn in the way that their individual mind was built to learn. Through our partnership with Iron Cross Gymnastics, we provide an at-the-gym program where athletes get a quality education custom-fit into the demanding practice schedule... allowing these kids ample time to spend with their families.” Perhaps you give your school the two thumbs up...but it’s always difficult for your child to “get back in the saddle” after summer. “It’s called the summer slide,” says Betsy. “Studies show that children slip back an average of 25% in reading skills each summer, and lose about 2.6 months of grade-level equivalency in math. That’s why summer is a great time to check out our EduCoachNow (ECN) tutoring program. We’ll put together a customized program for your child where we combine cognitive training skills exercises plus teach enhanced organizational, study and test taking strategies…all in one-on-one sessions.”

he Sugar Land area enjoys warm temperatures almost year round. That means shorts and sandals, short-sleeved T-shirts and a whole smorgasbord of exposed parts for mosquitoes and other biting insects to feed on. And they really line up for the attack. From pool parties to outdoor wedding receptions, mosquitoes manage to make their presence felt in the most misery-inducing ways. All that time, money and effort you spent making your front and back yards look as enticing as possible are wasted due to the pests with few redeeming qualities. Worse, there exists the possibility that mosquitoes in Texas carry the Zika, West Nile, Chikungunya, and Dengue viruses. Houston is a major travel hub and imported cases happen all the time. Our area is the perfect location for the Aedes aegypti mosquito to commence with the transmission cycle. Why take chances? John Onofrey and Chris Millward of BUGCO Pest Control have the perfect way to disinvite flying parasites from your outdoor events: a state-of-the-art mosquito misting system. In fact, right now they are offering a 20-nozzle system installed to make your outdoor space livable for the special price of $1599. And if you’ve been shopping for mosquito misting systems already, you’ll know what a great bargain that is. 2008, he teamed up with Chris Millward and brought their mutual business savvy, knowhow and ironclad integrity to BUGCO Pest Control. “We grew up here so we know all about local pest-related problems,” explains John. “In addition to mosquitoes, the Fort Bend area is also prone to fire ant colonies, rats, and termites. We are equipped to exterminate any and all of these. The first step is to give us a call and set up an appointment to come out to your house. If you don’t have a significant infestation, we’ll tell you. You have my word on that. And if there is a problem, then we can solve it as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible.” Whether your worry is mosquitoes, termites, fire ants or anything in between, call BUGCO Pest Control and rest easy knowing you’re in honest, expert hands. “We pledge to honor the trust you place in us,” says John. “Integrity means everything.”

Enhancing the Lives of Children
Every Day by Amy Sharp
MedCare was founded in 1991 by a husband and wife team.
“I’d worked on the business side in healthcare for several years,” says co-founder Paige Kinkade, “and I enjoyed it. My husband, Steve Wang, is an entrepreneur and already owned several successful businesses. So the natural evolution was to start our own healthcare business.” While MedCare initially started out providing adult in-home care, a phone call one day from a mom changed everything. “She had a child that needed in-home nursing care. I couldn’t turn down a suffering family. I became fascinated with this child and as I watched his condition improve, I felt honored to share in his life and participate in his care. Because parents of special needs children are a close-knit community, word quickly got around, and we began to admit more pediatric patients. Recognizing the great need in this space, we ultimately shifted our business model solely to pediatric care.” “My vision,” continues Paige, “was to fill in all the gaps in the care for our patients. By 1999, we added in-home physical, occupational and speech therapy services. Observing that some clients might do better in an outpatient rehab setting, we expanded our operations and built our own brand new building complete with a Rehab Clinic in 2005. My top priority was making it a place kids would love--right down to the colors and theme. This building is state-of-the art complete with a covered custom pool for aqua therapy. The kids we see here use the entire space--the stairs, the hallways. It’s a fun place with a great vibe. Even the smallest improvement in a child is monumental to the family. It is not uncommon to hear therapists--even our front desk staff--cheer wildly when kids make progress towards a goal.” MedCare has since expanded throughout the Greater Houston area, including clinic locations in North Shore, Spring, Pasadena and Katy. “Our goal is to offer comprehensive care to every child referred to us. We serve birth to age 21...but my next project involves creating a prevocational program for our adolescents about to age out of the program, so stay tuned!” Paige’s passion for these kids has no end. She travels to Austin--sometimes with kids in tow--to lobby when pediatric special needs decisions are on the table. She along with four of her staff sit on committees at the state level advocating regularly for Texas children with special medical and developmental needs. Steve and Paige reside in Riverstone and have three children. “From delivering Christmas trees during our Trees for Tots program to helping out during our respite nights,” says Paige, “our kids have always been a big part of our business.” MedCare Pediatric Group accepts Medicaid and will work with any insurance company. If you feel your child could benefit from their services, call today.
