body. Our patients with high tone and muscular problems become very relaxed in the water, and are able to move much easier.” 18 year old Juan started therapy at Medcare nine years ago. He’s done aquatic therapy each of those nine summers. Sommer says, “Juan walks with a walker. The first time Juan got in the pool, he had no idea he could walk unassisted. Because of the buoyancy, Juan is able to move across the pool without his walker. That’s very motivating to him. Today Juan is very focused on refining his skills. He’s very in tune to what he can’t do at the moment, and he’s trying to make his body stronger. Aquatic therapy has played a major part in showing him what’s possible!” Juan is just one of many patients benefitting from aquatic therapy at Medcare. The pool is extremely beneficial to patients with Sensory Integration Disorder. “We take these children into our fun pool. It’s an environment that’s not so scary and intimidating...and we work with them in the water to help their bodies and their brains get used to the feeling of being wet. That way events like bath time or washing hair or even being caught in the rain aren’t so traumatizing.” Co-founder Paige Kinkade The pool at Medcare is equipped with a Badu jet. Co-owner Paige
ut did you know the pool can be for more than just swimming? At MedCare Pediatric Group—the comprehensive therapy and nursing services provider for patients aged birth to 21 years old—both occupational and physical therapy patients are taking a dip in the pool as part of their therapy sessions. “Aquatic therapy is very motivating and it’s fun!” says Medcare physical therapist Sommer Lashomb. “Buoyancy and temperature are key. Buoyancy is what makes us float. It’s the reason we feel so much lighter in water. Even if you can’t move well on land, you can move more in the water. Plus, we keep our pool at 94 to 100 degrees. Kinkade explains, “The jet is similar to the jets in a hot tub, except it’s singular and very powerful. In a small space, you can swim against it forever. This allows our patients to really work on strengthening their muscles, while still enjoying the benefits of buoyancy and temperature.” Today, Medcare only offers aquatic therapy June-September. But that is changing soon. Paige says, “We’ve recognized the great need for this type of therapy in this area. The plans are in motion to enclose our pool so that we can offer this fantastic and fun therapy year round. That way even more patients can take advantage of it!” MedCare Pediatric Group accepts Medicaid and will work with any insurance company. What I
Know

T
ammy Navarro, a busy mother of four, has spent the past twenty years dealing with the discomfort of varicose veins. She’s an ICU nurse who works 12-13 hour shifts, often spending most of those hours on her feet. It wasn’t until last fall when the pain became so unbearable, that she finally decided to do something about it. When asked why she waited so long to seek help, she said, “I was just very anxious about the whole thing. I was worried about how painful it might be...I was anxious about the procedure and the recovery.” Hearing good things about Dr. Baltazar, Tammy was even more encouraged to learn what a great reputation he had among her friends and neighbors in Sienna. “Before surgery,” Tammy says, “the pain was just horrible. I had restless legs and couldn’t sleep. I knew from the very first office visit that Dr. Baltazar was the best person for me. I am so thankful for him and his nurses. Nothing was as I had envisioned. I had minimal pain the first two days after surgery, and by the fourth week I was back to my normal self...running and crossfit training.” Dr. Ulises Baltazar is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery with special certification in Vascular Surgery. He is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic, a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency that can cause painful varicose veins, venous stasis ulcers as well as leg swelling. Dr. Baltazar has been diagnosing and treating diseases of the arteries and veins for over ten years. Stories like Tammy’s make it easy to understand how Dr. Baltazar has earned the titles, “Most Supporting Physician” and “Patient’s Choice.” Tammy is quick to say, “If I had known then, what I know now, I would have done something about my legs a long time ago.” That’s why today, Tammy encourages anyone she knows to not wait to seek help. She wants people to know that help can be a lot easier than you think it will be. Tammy says, “Call Dr. Baltazar, talk to him, he’s awesome. Don’t be afraid to take that first step. It’s not as scary as you have imagined. That’s what I know now.”

“My Self-Confidence
has Soared!”
by Marie Page

eanna Burciago of Needville had gastric sleeve surgery a year and half ago. “I lost 120 pounds,” say Deanna. “It was fantastic...but I still had a lot of excess skin and a belly pooch. I met with several plastic surgeons exploring my options. When I met with Dr. Eric Humble at Sugar Land Face & Body, I really liked his approach. He has a great personality and he’s very upbeat...and I liked that he didn’t sugar coat anything. He talked me through exactly what he could do—a tummy tuck with slight liposuction that extended around to my sides. It was a very relaxed conversation, and I did not feel like I was in a doctor’s office at all. I just felt very welcome.” Dr. Humble performed Deanna’s procedure back in January. At the end of May, she attended her last follow-up appointment. “Once again, Dr. Humble was just so nice. He told me I was doing great and I looked great. He showed me my before and after pictures, and I couldn’t even believe it was the same person...and I was looking at pictures of myself! Dr. Humble estimated I’d lost about 10 pounds of skin! And as a result of the tummy tuck, two small scars from my gastric sleeve surgery were gone as well. I sing Dr. Humble’s praises to everyone. He’s amazing and his bedside manner is incredible...and his entire staff is just as welcoming and amazing.” And the results of Deanna’s procedure at Sugar Land Face & Body have not only changed her body, they’ve changed her life. “Even though I had lost 120 pounds, I was still very self-conscious because of the excess skin and my belly pooch. I was afraid and embarrassed to even try on snug clothes. Now I try on everything and I love my flat stomach. I’m super happy! I feel better, I look better, and my self-confidence has soared!” Dr. Humble says, “Deanna looks fantastic! I’m happy I could help her get the body she wanted, but even more pleased with her change in self-confidence. I learned way back in my residency that patients who opt for plastic surgery and self-transformation live an average of seven years longer than the average person. This was one of the driving forces that convinced me to become a plastic surgeon. My goal at Sugar Land Face & Body is to provide a setting where patients can feel supported in taking personal perspectives, along with physical augmentation, into a renewed sense of joy and exhilaration about life. I’m so happy I could do that for Deanna!” Before and After Photos available by visiting www.beautybecomesyou.com Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery and Med Spa 281-313-0555 | 16926 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, TX 77479

by Amy Sharp nge Hillz is an artist that pushes himself beyond his limits. So when he saw a YouTube video depicting an artist speed painting a picture in ten minutes, it caught his eye. “The first time I tried,” says Ange, “the painting took me two days. Now, I can do that painting in about five minutes.” For the past five years, Ange has been speed painting at events all over the country. This is an intriguing, energetic performance. Ange paints with both hands, engages the audience, and many times is painting upside down. In mere minutes, he produces a bright and engaging piece of commercial art. His live show is perfect for corporate events, trade shows and charities...where the paintings are then auctioned to raise money for the cause at hand. It was at one of these charity events that Don Kerstetter, owner of Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land, first met Ange. Don bought one of his paintings, and the two became friends. “Ange is an amazing individual,” says Don, “and his work is fantastic. I’m commissioning him to do some pieces for the dealership, and I knew his live performance would be a perfect addition to our Chili Cookoff.” And Don was right. Ange entertained the Chili Cookoff crowd by painting two paintings. The first portrays a police officer holding a baby...a nod to

the Sugar Land Police Officer’s Association, the beneficiary of the annual Chili Cookoff. Ange says, “When I was discussing what to paint with Don and Mark Kolon (Classic Chevy General Manager,) we decided we wanted something that shows how the police officers help the community. A reminder that they are here to both protect us and help us.” The second painting depicts the Stephen F. Austin on horseback statue in Sugar Land’s Town Square. The two paintings were auctioned, raising $4000 for the Sugar Land Police Officer’s Association. Ange grew up in Rwanda. He was influenced to become an artist by his older brother. “He’s my inspiration. I watched him paint growing up and just thought it was the coolest thing ever. I wanted to do the same thing.” Ange left his home country at the height of the Rwandan genocide. He’s grateful for his life, and what he’s become today...that he’s able to raise money for the less fortunate through his work. “I do a lot of events, I’m very busy. But I’m never too busy for charity. And that’s what I love about Don. We have a lot in common. He’s a very humble, charitable human being that I’m proud to call a friend.” For more information or to book a performance with Ange, visit www.visualpaint.com.

A KW Southwest Experience The Stiles’ Story

by Amy Sharp
osh and April Stiles met KW Southwest (Keller Williams) agent Roscoe Ford at a dinner party years ago. “We liked him immediately and kept up through social media,” says Josh. “This past fall, April’s job was moved to Austin...and we called Roscoe for help.” The decision to move did not come easy, as just six months prior the Stiles had purchased land in Bridalwood to eventually build a home. “It was a scary, stressful time,” says Josh. “We needed to sell the land, sell our Greatwood home that we’d owned for years, and find something in Austin. We have two young girls that my parents help watch during the week. We wanted to recreate that in Austin, so we decided to buy a house big enough for everyone.” Roscoe says, “I was ecstatic to help. But when I reached out to April’s relocation company, I discovered we were not a registered broker. I inquired and completed the necessary documents to get my office approved...so that I could move forward helping the Stiles.” “The relocation company actually required we interview several agents,” continues Josh. “Some came back with big numbers, told us the house would sell in no time. Roscoe cautioned us against the ‘pie in the sky.’ Houses in our neighborhood were being reduced at the time, and it was the middle of the school year. I trusted his judgement. We followed his lead, and sold both the
land and the house. For our new home in Austin, we thought about getting a local real estate agent, but Roscoe assured us that with KW Southwest he had access to everything we needed. He was super diligent in sending us potential properties. We road tripped to Austin together, where April and I loved the first house we looked at. After viewing several more, we were out to dinner when Roscoe suggested we go back to the neighborhood where we loved the home. They were still building...and maybe we could find something cheaper, but similar. We found the exact same house under construction, scheduled to be ready when we needed it! We had the opportunity to pick all of the finishes...and the price was $23,000 cheaper than the other home. Everything ended up perfect!” Roscoe says, “I know the relocation was hard for the Stiles family...and I knew I needed a strategy and plan to get this process done with minimal stress. Months after closing I received a video from Josh of his daughters laughing and swinging in the backyard, with a note saying, ‘You’re a big part of the joy that my children are experiencing!’ That’s the kind of service we provide. It’s the KWSW way!” KW Southwest ~ 281-265-0000 1650 Highway 6, Ste 350 • Sugar Land, TX 77478

Family Tradition by Olivia Cane
alt Disney once said, “A man should never neglect his family for business.” Striving for the best life/work balance possible is what we all aspire to, and it was definitely something Alan Burkhalter, master plumber and owner/operator of Alan’s Plumbing, intended to achieve with his wife and three boys. More often than not when they were growing up, he found himself taking them to work, letting them tinker around with the tools, and marveling at their focus and ability. “Maybe plumbing skills are inherited...like music and medicine,” says Alan. “But all three of my boys—Jake, Beau and Luke—have the gift.” “The gift,” as Alan calls it, was passed down to him by his grandfather, an ironworker who helped build the San Jacinto Monument. “If it has to do with steel pipes or beams, for three generations now, we’ve been getting the job done. When my boys were about nine, they started riding the truck with me and my brother Chris...helping out with even the dirty jobs. They loved it all. Now they’re grown up, fixing plumbing throughout the Sugar Land area. Knowing what skilled,
honest, trustworthy plumbers they are gives me and my wife, Jennifer, the greatest joy imaginable.”
“We aren’t a big national corporation,” continues Alan. “We’re a true family-run business. We are personally obligated to stand behind our service and our prices because we aren’t answering to a board of directors, we’re answering to you.” Alan and his brother Chris, Alan’s wife Jennifer (the friendly voice you hear on the phone,) along with their boys, plus journeyman licensed plumber Jeff Johnson and apprentices Jaime, Trevor, Kyle and Robert are the reason Alan’s Plumbing has a reputation for getting the job done right the first time. “Honesty and professionalism are the two things I drill into everyone’s heads,” says Alan. “Our customers know we’re there for them—whether it’s an emergency water
heater situation or an invisible leak that’s wreaking havoc inside their drywall. We’ll move mountains to make sure the problem is taken care of at the fairest price.” “We aren’t a big national corporation,” continues Alan. “We’re a true family-run business. We are personally obligated to stand behind our service and our prices because we aren’t answering to a board of directors, we’re answering to you. And since we live in this community, we’re more than your local service providers. We’re your neighbors.” When Alan was 17, he went on his first plumbing call, which happened to be in Greatwood. “I knew I’d found what I wanted to do with my life and I never looked back,” he says. “Now my family is working beside me and together we can offer you the lowest price possible on the good work we do.” “When you call us, you can expect the best.”

hen Sugar Land attorney Brent Carpenter injured his back, he did what most of us would do in his situation: he sought medical treatment at his nearest hospital ER. “I waited in a crowded room with lots and lots of other people, and after a long time I got called to go wait in a smaller room until a nurse came in and asked me what was wrong,” explains Brent. “Then I waited again for a doctor who conducted a quick exam and let me go. Their attitude was my money and their profit were the most important things...and my care and well-being were somewhere further down the list. Way down. It was a disturbing experience.” The next time Brent needed emergency care, he sought treatment at St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms...where his experience was quite different. “I was immediately greeted by a very friendly person at the front desk who asked how I was doing and what they could do for me. She took my information and then escorted me right to an examination room. A nurse came in a few minutes later, followed by the doctor. The doctor not only asked about my immediate issues, but also about my general health and well-being. I felt like they had all the time in the world for me...and they made sure I got all my questions answered. My experience at St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms was radically different than what I went through at the local hospital ER. Now when something comes up with me, my friends or family, I always recommend St. Michael’s.” “If you want superior care, go to St. Michael’s,” Brent adds. “They’re about the patient, not the profit.”
At this time St Michael’s, due to governmental, bureaucratic decisions, is unable to participate in Medicare, Medicaid, or Tricare.

The Kings of
COOL by Olivia Cane

ackson Air and Heat, Sugar Land’s go-to experts on TRANE TruComfort air technology, has a proud history that now goes three generations deep. Johnny Jackson, the company’s founder and one of eleven children who grew up in rural Oklahoma, went to work for National Cash Register after completing a stint with the Air Force. He served as an aircraft mechanic there, and found that he possessed a real aptitude for using tools and solving mechanical problems. In 1976, National Cash Register transferred Jackson and his new family to a (then) obscure subdivision of Houston called Sugar Land. There were barely any houses—mostly fields and farm roads. But Johnny loved the area immediately and grasped all its brilliant promise. The Arab Oil Embargo caused the demand for Texas oil to boom. Sugar Land shared in that prosperity, expanding its commercial and residential developments and paving new roads. But in terms of living conditions, this wasn’t the wind-fed plains of Oklahoma Johnny was used to. It was
hot, swampy Southeast Texas...and he soon realized that air conditioning was not only essential, but that he was the one that could bring climate control to all the good people in the Sugar Land area. And Jackson Air and Heat was born. “I grew up in the family business,” says Brian Jackson, Johnny’s son. “Everything Dad knew, he taught me...including how important it is to give the best service to every single customer. In addition to giving the best service, he made sure we were using the best product. That’s why we became the largest independent TRANE air conditioner dealer in the area. TRANE units are the most efficient units available, especially in our ultra-humid conditions.” Now Brian’s sons work in the family business...fixing units, installing new ones, and checking furnaces. “This is all we do,” explains Brian. “We’re not a part of a larger company, so our reputations as businessmen—and as your neighbors—depends on providing you the service you deserve. Our kids play sports with your kids. Our families live in the same neighborhoods where we do
business. When your old air conditioner is wheezing or the compressor goes out, we’re there...not just because it’s our job, but because we’re your neighbors.” And there are great benefits to calling Jackson Air and Heat before disaster strikes. “Because TRANE air conditioners are so energy efficient,” says Brian, “you’ll save a lot of money on your energy bills. You may also be eligible for 0% APR financing or instant rebates.” “You might say that we have a history of service and TRANE has a history of keeping you cool!”

ore than one in three seniors over age 65 fall each year. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) says 80 percent of these falls are in the bathroom. With a multitude of unforgiving and slippery surfaces, your parents’ current bathroom may not be the safest configuration. Many physicians recommend installing a shower or tub built around the unique needs of elderly adults. Knowing how to get in and out of tubs and showers properly, and equipping homes with necessary safety precautions can reduce senior falls...keep them out of the emergency room and possibly extending their life. But before shelling out the cash for an expensive walk-in tub, you should know that installation requires tearing out the old tub. It may also require the removal of walls, modifying flooring, extensive plumbing modifications and days, if not weeks, of work. Miracle Method Surface Refinishing has a faster, more affordable alternative. Local Miracle Method owners Jonee and Paul Barnett say, “If you’ve seen our surface restoration of existing counters, showers, and tubs...you know we’re strongly in favor of ‘aging in place!’ But we transform more than just surfaces. Everyone finds it easier and safer to step into a tub instead of trying to climb over the side. We can install the Easy Step® to an existing tub with or without a door. These installations can be done on porcelain, steel, fiberglass and acrylic tubs.” And as an added bonus, the work can usually be done in a day...and if you save your cut-out, the process is completely reversible! Besides a customized shower or bath, NIA and the American Geriatrics Society also recommend that grab bars be installed. Paul and Jonee can take care of this too! Paul says, “Our Easy Step® Bathroom Safety Package comes with two ADA-approved safety grab bars. These are much stronger than towel racks...which aren’t meant to support weight. In addition to the grab bars, the package includes a slip-resistant surface applied to the bottom of
the tub. It’s the same slip-resistant tub bottom that national hotel chains like Marriott commissioned us to use. You can also add on a curved shower rod, hand-held shower nozzle, and tub chair. It makes me feel great to know we’re installing such a solid, worthwhile product. We really believe in looking out for our customers!” Don’t wait for a fall to happen. ack in 2009, Jared Williams opened the doors of the very first Dynamic Fitness with a simple vision—to create a place where everyone could enjoy fitness with access to state-of-the-art equipment, superior customer service, cleanliness, and straightforward, affordable pricing. Today—with four locations and more to come—fitness enthusiasts all over the metropolitan area enjoy Jared’s vision and creation. Jared says, “I credit my team with this success. Their hardwork and dedication made this dream a reality. That’s why 2016 is a year of reinvesting...in both this team and these facilities.” The oldest locations—Pearland and Sugar Land—will be updated to match the others. Changes include materials with improved durability and a color scheme carefully selected to provide the ambiance clients have to come to expect at Dynamic Fitness. Jared says, “We are not going to let our facilities start looking like a bruised banana peel...we aim to keep them looking dynamic.” “And our employees...they’re our greatest asset! We provide the training they need to help you achieve your fitness goals. And we are all about fun too. Our top club manager was awarded a trip to Mexico. We recently kicked off the 2nd quarter with a team building staycation at the Hotel Galvez. My philosophy is that when someone truly loves their job, it shows. That’s where you come in—our clients. When you walk into our clubs, you’ll find everyone that works here is engaging and dynamic. This is your club, and we are here to help you. We check in with you, see how it’s going. We want to know that you’re happy with the gym and your workouts...and we want to make sure you’re having the best day possible.” In addition to dynamic employees in a dynamic environment, Dynamic Fitness also has dynamic pricing...$19.99/month. Jared says, “We have different bundles that include add-ons like childcare, personal training and tanning, but our base price is simple. For that low price you can access all of our classes, equipment and pools...at all of our locally-owned and operated locations.”

here’s a lot to love about summer—longer days, warmer weather—but there’s a lot to loathe too. You’re showing more skin and spending more time outside, but those pesky mosquitoes and weird tan lines are just some of the woes that can ruin even the most perfect summer day. Justin Terrill is the co-owner of several area Glo Sun Spa locations. Glo Sun Spa is an advanced indoor tanning and skin care facility. This official tanning salon of the Houston Texans Cheerleaders uses the absolute best equipment in the world to offer premium indoor tanning, indoor sunless tanning spray, skin rejuvenating spa services, cryotherapy and the SlimPod weight loss system. What this provider of affordable luxury tanning does not want? Bugs! Justin says, “Two years ago my partner and I were looking for a new bug company. We hit it off immediately with Chris Millward at BUGCO Pest Control. These guys are honest, on-time, reliable, and they care. We recently saw a spider in our Katy location. I texted Chris, and he sent someone out that same afternoon. The BUGCO representative explained to me that spiders are a different breed, they come in a different way...and at the moment they were displaced by the May flooding in Katy. He told me he could spray again, but spiders are difficult to control in a flood. He recommended some exclusion work to keep them from getting in. I appreciated him both educating me and being honest.” BUGCO is locally owned by John Onofrey. He founded the company with his longtime friend and partner, Chris Millward. “As local guys, we know what kind of pests to expect... and how to deal with them,” says John. “And I know what’s bothering you right now...the gnats. Those tiny things get you and the itch is bigger than the bite. And the mosquitos have started to stake their ground too. A mosquito misting system will keep both the gnats and the mosquitos out of your outdoor living space this summer.” Already have a system that’s in disrepair or you don’t know how to use it? And don’t forget...house general pest control is included with all mosquito misting quarterly maintenance programs!” Both Justin and his partner Todd Earnhart also use BUGCO Pest Control at their homes. “I haven’t seen a bug in my house in two years!” says Justin. “And Todd just put in one of their mosquito misting systems. Our party room seats 50 comfortably. Book it for your next event...church groups, school functions, private parties, anniversary parties, rehearsal dinners and sports teams are all welcome here!”
Families, book groups, work buddies, friends and neighbors all gather for dinner at Lomonte’s. What should you order? Start with Lomonte’s famous house salad (Braden says this one is “St. Louis-style,”)...tossed romaine and iceberg lettuce with artichoke hearts and hearts of palm. Then choose from menu favorites like Fettuccine Alfredo or Chicken Marsala...or look for specials like the popular Capellini-Crusted Red Snapper or Pistachio-Encrusted Chicken. Braden says, “If you want our real Southern Italian food in the comfort of your own home, we offer our full-scale menu for takeout and delivery orders (call for delivery area.) It’s a great way to get pizza to please the kids and an entree for mom and dad.” “We’re a neighborhood restaurant,” continues Braden, “so supporting the community is a huge part of our lives. We have a book club that comes in once a month for their meeting (and wine!), families who celebrate every occasion here, school spirit nights, and a great location right at the entrance to Pecan Grove. And for added ambiance, in the near future we will be adding live music weekly right here at Lomonte’s.” Italian families know how to share their love for each other through the language of food... bring your family to Lomonte’s and enjoy!

ne local family has handed it down through the generations...and now you can reap the delicious benefits. Kevin Rios says, “My father Mario and my mother Maggie were both immigrants and entrepreneurs. I grew up around the restaurant business, working in several Houston restaurants. In 2005, I, together with my parents and sister Karen, opened Mojitos Cuban Bistro. While Mojitos was very successful, we wanted to venture more into fine dining. That’s how Veritas was born. When we opened eight years ago, we wanted to combine fine dining, a superb wine experience, and superior service. And today nothing’s changed. We continue to offer an upscale experience and exquisite food at reasonable prices.” As a guest, you will enjoy this culinary adventure on the veranda overlooking Brooks Lake, in the private wine cellar or in the elegant dining room. But wherever you dine, expect to be fed like royalty and treated like family, by family. Kevin and his family can always be seen at Veritas, working with their team to ensure the perfect dining experience...a team that is 90% employees hired on day one. Managing partner and executive chef Taylor Salazar is Karen’s husband. Taylor graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelors of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management and later earned a second degree in Culinary Arts from The Art Institute of Houston. Kevin’s mom Maggie holds down the business and accounting, and honorary family member Alex Mendoza is the kitchen manager. With happy hour M-F 3-7 and on Saturday 4-7, Veritas is the place to enjoy a phenomenal date on the veranda, impress your colleagues with a special event, or celebrate an evening out. At the striking stone
bar in the front of the restaurant, you can have an aperitif before dinner or an after dinner drink before leaving. Karen, who managed restaurants for many years, today is a Registered Nurse who works at Texas Children’s Hospital. She recently graduated with her Masters of Science in Nursing as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. Kevin’s wife Melissa has a full-time job taking care of their kids and holds a Masters of Science from the University of Houston in Educational Leadership. And this family of great taste continues to grow. On May 4th, Karen and Taylor welcomed the newest member of the Rios clan, baby girl Channing. Kevin says, “I love that my kids and Karen’s kids get to grow up together in the family business. We invite you to join our family for lunch, dinner, or happy hour. With our seasonal menu featuring the finest and freshest ingredients possible and our world class wine list, we’re sure you’ll be impressed!” Steak and Lobster Night every Saturday $29.95 (includes House Salad and Roasted Potatoes) Steak Night every Monday Choose a Filet, Prime New York Strip or Ribeye $39.95 (includes House Salad, Mashed Potatoes and Asparagus) Veritas Steak and Seafood ~ 281-491-2901 550 Lake Pointe Parkway, Suite 500, Sugar Land, TX 77478 www.veritassteakandseafood.com

hen Andy and Jean Hsu of Sugar Land decided to remodel their kitchen, a new layout was in order. “We wanted a truly open concept,” says Andy. “To achieve that, we needed to knock down a few walls. We also wanted to remove our small island and replace it with a bigger one, new lighting and new cabinets. A complete remodel.” After reading about Teri Gilberg, better known as the “The Re-Modelista,” in different magazines, Andy visited her website. “Her gallery of kitchen remodels was very similar to what we were looking for, so we gave her call.” Andy and Jean would meet with Teri five or six times before beginning construction. “She’s very thorough. We had a general idea of how we wanted the new kitchen to be laid out. Teri made sure it was structurally possible, that we could accomplish what we had in mind. Most of the finishes we picked out during construction. When we couldn’t find cabinets we liked, Teri recommended an individual at Natural Stone Gallery. It’s a great place and we found both cabinets and other finishes that fit the look we were going for. We had purchased the backsplash ourselves, and with Teri’s recommendation regarding arrangement, it has a contemporary feel. Between our ideas and Teri’s, we were able to meet in the middle and create a great look.”

The entire process of remodeling and transforming the Hsu’s kitchen to an open concept took just over a month. “We’re still putting on the finishing touches,” says Andy, “but it looks very nice. I have a few friends also wanting to move their kitchens to a more open concept, and I’ve already told them about Teri. She’ll help them get where they want to be!”

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY
“When he came in, he told me he was afraid he needed to either retire from dentistry or have surgery.” ~ Dr. Steve Harris by Marie Page
D
entists spend hours in awkward positions...and usually only work with their right (or dominant) side. So when a dentist approached Dr. Harris for help, Dr. Harris wasn’t surprised. “It’s an occupation such that problems accumulate given the postures required. I’m not sure how any dentist stays in practice for years without experiencing problems or requiring chiropractic care.” “I’ve been seeing this particular dentist for more than 30 years. But he wasn’t a regular patient, or in constant pain until 2013. Normally an outgoing, happy guy...when he came in that day, he was depressed. He had pain in his neck, his right arm and down to his right hand. He told me he was afraid he needed to either retire from dentistry or have surgery. I wanted to help him.” When Dr. Harris did his examination, he found the patient had ¾ inch more shoulder muscle tension and prominence on his right side. “It’s all part of the occupational hazard,” says Dr. Harris. “And this is an avid athlete. He wakeboards and runs marathons...he’s in great shape. I used chiropractic techniques, soft tissue work, a class four laser and spinal disc decompression techniques. He was virtually pain free in two weeks. It took a little longer for his muscles to balance out, but now we have that in check too.” Today this particular dentist is in what Dr. Harris calls “supportive care and maintenance mode.” Dr. Harris says, “When he has a tough case at the office, he comes in for rebalancing. And he doesn’t wait until there’s a problem...he comes in right when he feels things slipping and we take care it.” “It’s so gratifying to know how I impacted his life. This dentist was ready to retire or go in for surgery. I’ve been in practice for nearly 40 years, and I couldn’t

imagine retiring because of pain. This dentist felt the same way. I love knowing that chiropractic extended his successful career and changed his life. He’s back to happy and outgoing. He’s referred two additional dentists to me that I now have ‘back to normal’ too, and they referred two more dentists. That’s five dentists that were living in pain because they continued to dayin, day-out do what they love. I want dentists to know it doesn’t have to be that way. You can have an extremely long dental career.”

Amy Sharp ullinan Park—the 754 acre park just north of Sugar Land Regional Airport—is receiving a fantastic facelift thanks to a fateful flight. Owned by the City of Houston, Cullinan Park was created in 1989 in part by donation from the estate of Houston philanthropist Nina Cullinan. But so far out of the city limits (the park was part of a Houston ETJ,) the park had no advocate...so it remained largely undeveloped. In 2010, friends and heirs of Ms. Cullinan created the Cullinan Park Conservancy to advocate on behalf of the park. With no luck in Houston, the Conservancy— together with Fort Bend Green—approached the City of Sugar Land. Mayor Jimmy Thompson says, “We hadn’t made much headway regarding the park when I ended up on a flight next to (then) Houston Mayor Annise Parker. I suggested Sugar Land either buy the park or Houston could donate it to us. But a city can’t sell or donate land without a referendum—a vote—and Mayor Parker was unwilling to do that. We found another option. Shortly after that plane ride, Mayor Parker’s staff contacted me. Long story short, today we have an interlocal agreement with the

City of Houston. The City of Sugar Land is responsible for operating and maintaining the park. The Conservancy will support our efforts with private resources and fundraising.” And this park is going to be fantastic. Sugar Land Director of Parks and Recreation Joe Chesser says, “With two ponds and two waterways, there are tons of fishing opportunities and we’ll be adding kayaking and canoeing. We are cleaning up and maintaining the existing trails and adding new ones. The Sugar Land Police Department is putting in GPS located call boxes. Cullinan is already on the Texas State Parks and Wildlife Birding Trail and attracts a lot of statewide visitors... and with the presence of the police department and city staff, we’ve already seen a significant pickup in local attendance.” The annexation and development of Cullinan Park more than doubles the amount of park space in the City of Sugar Land. As Mayor
Thompson’s term comes to an end, Cullinan Park is another piece of his great legacy. “This is a big deal for the City,” says Mayor Thompson. “And my happenstance flight with Mayor Parker was certainly instrumental in making this happen!” Cullinan Park Conservancy cullinanparkconservancy.org

ike Rydin—President and CEO of HCSS—remembers delivering donuts to construction workers as a teenager. “One day I expressed to my dad, a factory worker, that I wanted a job I enjoyed. He told me that’s not how it works. You put in 40 hours, and enjoy yourself later. I rebelled against that theory then, and I’m still rebelling against it today.” Mike opened HCSS—his construction software and services company—back in 1986. Today, HCSS has grown to nearly 200 employees, and their beautiful campus and headquarters is located right here in Sugar Land. And true to his word, Mike continues to rebel against “all work and no play.” HCSS has been recognized as one of the “Best Companies to Work for in Texas” for nine consecutive years, ranked as one of the “Best Places to Work in Houston” by the Houston Business Journal, and crowned a “Top Small Workplace” by the Wall Street Journal. And this place is amazing! There’s an on-site gym, instructor-led fitness classes, an outdoor covered basketball court and a track. “I ran track on a cinder track in high school,” says Mike. “I

There’s a pool table, a piano, video games, and a commercial kitchen stocked with drinks, fruit, nuts, and even ice cream. The newest building, specifically for software developers, features a cargo net for climbing to the second floor and a spiral slide back down (of course, there are stairs too—in case you’re wearing heels!) These employees have meetings and chats in the courtyard...complete with picnic tables and grills. Miss your fur-baby? Not Mike’s employees. In this fantastic environment, the HCSS team builds and supports innovative software that helps construction companies manage projects from bid to completion. And they’re always looking for new members. Mike says, “We’ll even train you—no experience necessary. Now they are looking for something that coincides with their school-age children’s schedule. We offer a part-time program that allows moms to drop their kids off at school and be back at home when the kids get home. And of course we pay professional salaries because we value the skills these women provide.” “We hire only friendly people, because I personally want you to enjoy working here. es Sims, owner of Cajun Cuisine, spent 44 years in the oilfield business. “I never cooked a thing until I was a twentysomething year old bachelor and didn’t like what I could buy. My mom and my grandma were great cooks. I would call my mom for help, and I watched Great Chefs on TV. Having spent some of my childhood in Louisiana, I became very interested in Paul Prudhomme and Cajun cooking.” Married at age 30, Wes joined a supper club with his wife Paula. “Our supper club friends loved my food...they felt I should open a restaurant. But, my wife wanted me to wait until our kids--Catherine and Cameron--were out of college. So, we compromised, I kept my job, and started catering small parties.” Wes was an in-home chef for 10 years...and today, with the kids out of college, is living his dream. His son, Cameron, works alongside him as the expeditor and kitchen manager. Cajun Cuisine is made-from-scratch Cajun dining at its finest. Favorites include Crawfish Etouffee, Shrimp and Grits, Bone-In Pork Chops with Spiced Apple Gravy and BBQ Shrimp. Save room for Wes’ quintessential New Orleans’ desserts...the White Chocolate Bread Pudding with Dark Chocolate Kahlua Sauce or his Creme Brulee will have you coming back for more! As they say, the devil is in the details; that attention to detail is evident in both the food and the interior of Wes’ restaurant. “I designed an atmosphere that emphasizes the history and beauty of New Orleans and South Louisiana. The blue stone surround on the fireplace dates to 1875. It’s from an old mansion torn down in 1982 to make room for the 1984 World’s Fair held in New Orleans. The bar top is from a 125 year old Cypress tree. The government no longer allows harvest of this old growth cypress in Louisiana. We were lucky to purchase this piece from a tree
that fell during Hurricane Katrina.” And there’s more...100 year old cypress arches, a custom trumpet light built by Wes and his family, and decorative nods to Mardi Gras and Bourbon Street...just to name a few! Wes and his family have truly brought a piece of New Orleans--both the cuisine and the ambiance--to a fantastic location right on the Grand Parkway. Stop in and enjoy a fabulous night out!

rag racing has existed since automobiles were first developed. For nearly a century, car-lovers all over the world have sought out the fascination found in two cars lining up and racing from a standing start. David Bowie understands this fascination. He’s wanted to build his own drag car his entire life. In 1999, as his 30 year career with Roadway was coming to a close, David started building his dream car in his garage. “That first car wasn’t what it was supposed to be...and I wanted to build my car properly,” says David. “Jerry Bickel—the best chassis shop in the world—offered seminars and study courses on how to do it the right way. I took just about all of them. I became a Jerry Bickel dealer and was buying Jerry Bickel components to build my car. And since I was building my car the way they do...I started getting calls from customers saying that Jerry Bickel referred them to me. That’s how David Bowie Race Cars was born.” And today, David Bowie Race Cars is no weekend warrior. No one in the Greater Houston area is building cars of this caliber.
Every car built by David and his crew is a winner. “We start with a fiberglass body,” says David, “and an SFI certified chassis. The engine is set properly for performance and my cars are built for safety. We utilize a jig table to ensure duplication and consistency in everything we do. That means one car performs just as well as the car that came off the table before it. Want a 2017 Camaro that does a six second ¼ mile? We can build it. We’ve built Camaros, Firebirds, GTO’s and more. And each is as good the last. Consistency is the key to our great cars. Anything less is unacceptable.” This Louisiana native has been in the Houston area since age 10. He and Bernice,
his wife of 47 years, raised their two boys in Houston. His career in trucking with Roadway took him on many Texas country roads. Many years ago, the tiny Fort Bend County community of Needville caught his eye, and he bought some land there to retire. Today, David, Bernice, and his shop—David Bowie Race Cars—all reside in Needville. Once a one-man-show, David Bowie Race Cars has grown to seven mechanics. In addition to full builds, they do half builds and repair wrecked cars. When David’s not building race cars...well, he’s building race cars. “It’s what I love to do...and I still haven’t finished my own car!”

A Week Filled with Music! W
by Amy Sharp
hether you’re two years old or 82 years old, a week filled with music might be just the antidote to beat the heat this summer! Craig Latson, the Music Education Director at Fort Bend Music, is once again planning summer camps that are sure to bring out the music lover in everyone. Craig says, “I tell all of our students, old and young: You only need one thing in order to play music...desire. If you have the desire, we’ll teach you to play. When music brings you joy, you’ll want to do it for the rest of your life. I invite you to join us for a week filled with music!” “We offer a one hour a day, five-day option for 18 months-6 year olds and their parents. During this camp, kids will experience an introduction to music, including piano, learning rhythm, developing their music appreciation...and having fun! Older kids get the full music experience—two and a half hours a day, five days in a row for ages 7-9, 10-12, 13-19, and ages 20+ (mom and dad, this could be you!) Each day will feature a half hour lesson in piano, brass, guitar, percussion, and voice. That’s like getting your first month of instruction in five different musical areas...all in a one-week camp at a great price! We have several weeks and times available, and are sure to have a spot that fits you and your child’s schedule.” And just as quickly as it arrived, summer will be gone and it’s back to school. President of Fort Bend Music, Rick Cochran says, “Supporting school band and orchestra is a large part of our business. Whether you need brass, woodwind or percussion, we can help fit your student with an instrument and we stock all of the required accessories too. We offer financing upon approved credit and rentals, including month-to-month or rent-to-own.” And don’t forget...at Fort Bend Music lessons run year round. Schedule some privates for your high schooler to sharpen his skills, or maybe your middle school daughter is joining orchestra for the first time and you want a jump start. One-on-one lessons at Fort Bend Music will get them where you want them to be! Just like summer camp, lessons aren’t limited to just the school-age kids. Craig says, “From our Tunes for Toddlers to our Keyboard Encounter for Seniors (KES) program, we offer music lessons starting at age 18 months to 110 (and beyond!) We have moms come in while the kids are at school, dads on their lunch breaks and even doctors early in the morning. It’s never too late, and we can teach you any instrument you choose...guitar, brass, saxophone, drums, violin, harpsichord, mandolin, piccolo, accordion, singing...you name it, we can teach it and you will enjoy learning it!” Fort Bend Music Center 281-494-5885 12919 SW Freeway, Ste 160 www.fortbendmusiccenter.com

tate Farm Agent Tracy Walker is a single mom with three kids. Several years ago she asked her fellow Rotary member, attorney Margie Connolly, to rework her will. “I asked for her help because I needed to change who was in charge of my estate. In my previous will, it was my mom...but I knew I needed someone younger.” But when Margie saw Tracy’s will, she found lots of holes in it. “One of the biggest was my inheritance to my kids. Margie suggested I stair-step the payments—not pay it out in one lump sum. My daughter has Diabetes Type 1, so we set aside more for her than the other two...because she will have higher expenses the rest of her life. And of course, there’s always the question of who takes the kids. I still have one minor and Margie recommended the guardian be a different person from the individual taking care of the estate.” “Margie made suggestions I hadn’t thought of regarding protecting my children. She’s a mom herself, and she understands everything. Plus, she’s very easy going, very caring and friendly. I highly recommend her to everyone. Just recently I was talking with a family with a special needs child. They did not have a special needs trust in place. I sent them to Margie.” 22 ~ UPCLOSE ~ June 2016

As Tracy knows, Margie is here to help with all of your family law and estate planning needs, including all aspects of divorce and custody, and preparing for death (wills and trusts.) Tracy says, “My daughter is now 20 and Margie is putting together a will for her, most importantly the medical directives due to her medical condition. My 22 year old son has a baby girl and I’m having him create a will as well. Because when there’s a precious little one involved, you need to put everything in writing...and Margie is just the person to take care of that for you!”

Maximum Results in Minimum Time
...No Sweat!
T
he reasons people don’t exercise are countless. They don’t have time, don’t like sweating, don’t like gyms, don’t know what to do, hate the drudgery, don’t like the subliminal pressure of fitness crowds, maybe they’ve been injured by exercising before, maybe they have minor or even major medical issues. What if you could push all of these obstacles to the side...build the strength you need to be healthy and active all in just 20 minutes, two times a week—free of sweat— wearing the clothes you’re wearing right now? Sound unbelievable? That’s exactly what Ken Roche, a fitness enthusiast who retired from Shell after 35 years thought. “I was looking for something in retirement that could really make a difference for people. I discovered SuperSlow Zone and it was too good to be true. After talking with the CEO, I drove up to College Station to visit their location. I was amazed. I didn’t sweat at all, but could feel the effect on my muscles. It worked.” The SuperSlow Zone® exercise protocol was developed in 1982 during a $3.2 million Osteoporosis study at the University of Florida School of Medicine. The protocol is based on– fatiguing muscle groups to momentary failure, and done slowly to avoid the joint forces that occur with traditional strength exercises. Having qualified professional instruction is very important to be effective and safe. That’s why SSZ is accredited by the IACET, the same group that certifies GE Healthcare, The American Physical Therapy
Association, and similar prestigious organizations. “When done correctly, you only need to do this twice a week and we track your results with proprietary technology,” says Ken. All sessions are one-on-one with a certified instructor in a quiet, elegant studio equipped with medical-grade equipment. Ken’s wife and co-owner Sheryl is sold as well. Sheryl ran track and played basketball at Texas A&M. She has spent a lifetime training. “I almost feel like it’s cheating!” says Sheryl. “I think about all the hours I put in training, yet this produces so much of the same result. If you don’t enjoy exercise or just don’t have the time, this is perfect. You can fit it to your schedule... because you can wear regular clothes and you won’t need a shower after. Perfect for people with health challenges, business professionals, busy moms, retired people... anybody that wants evidence-based results and to get the exercise done so they can move on with the rest of their day.” Sugar Land’s SSZ General Manager, Elizabeth Stewart, a University of Oklahoma track star, agrees with Sheryl. “I’m just in awe of this program. Women’s bodies really change as we get older. We put on weight for a variety of reasons— necessary medications, kids, just life in general. I

Technology

ark McComb, owner of Structure, has been working since he was in junior high. “When my dad lost his job, I took a job for a gentleman who went to our church. I’ve been working ever since.” At age 16 Mark became part owner of an electrical design company, a position he sold out of in 1988 to “be a kid.” “I attended the University of Houston, then took a finance job...but I didn’t like being tied to a desk. All of the growth back then was wrapped around technology, and that’s where I wanted to be.” Mark sold technology products where he was the #1 salesman. But a fateful talk at an oil and gas conference changed Mark’s path. “I gave a lecture on fiber optics, and
afterwards two executives from leading companies approached me to help document their infrastructure. That changed everything. Over the past 24 years, I’ve executed multiple successful technology projects, focusing on network infrastructure and software development.” At Structure, Mark and his business partner Denton Hew, zero in on making technology infrastructure affordable for small and midsize companies and startups. “We ensure your technology environment meets both the current and future needs of your organization. “She
Changed
My Life.” W by Marie Page
hen Shane Dodson was 30 years old, he took a blood test. “My test showed I had little to no testosterone. My wife took a test on the same day, and her testosterone levels were higher than mine!” Shane started researching. “The internet was very limited back then, but I did find that when you have it that young, you’re headed down a path of heart disease and early death. That caught my attention. I also read Suzanne Somers’ book, I’m Too Young For This. She talks about her son and his experience with hormone replacement. I was surprised to see his initial blood work results were nearly identical to mine. I reached out to anti-aging doctors.”
“For me, getting testosterone is like putting gasoline in a car.” For the next 10 years, Shane bounced between doctors. “I was doing weekly injections, but the doctors were very conservative. Whenever my levels approached a level where I felt better, they pulled back. I gained ground and it was taken away. It was very aggravating.” Shane met Dr. Julia Ward during a stay Hotel Zsa Zsa. “I struck up a conversation with her husband, Dr. John Ward. He’s a doctor at MD Anderson and specializes in the type of cancer that took my dad. We had an instant connection. And when Dr. Julia Ward heard my low testosterone story, she told me, ‘I can change your life.’” Today Shane receives hormone therapy from Dr. Ward in pellet form. Shane says, “I go in three times a year and she inserts the pellet under my skin. With this delivery, I have all day, everyday absorption of testosterone. It’s a more ideal way to get it, and get to consistent levels where I feel my best. Dr. Ward does regular blood work to make sure we’re on track...in fact, she calls me or texts me when it’s time. She’s very passionate about what she does. And not only is she treating the issue, she’s trying to find the underlying cause. Why did this happen to me at 30? Through micronutrient panels and genetic testing she’s supplemented my treatment. She recently called me from the airport. She had just attended a lecture, and discovered additional tests that might help find my root cause. A call from the airport...that kind of care and attention is just unheard of!” “For me, getting testosterone is like putting gasoline in a car. I know when my levels are getting low. I start to lose mental clarity, my drive and my passion. Dr. Ward has given all of that back. I own multiple businesses, including Bionic Emergency Service—a 24 hour immediate water damage response service. I wouldn’t have the mental clarity or the drive to do what I do without Dr. Ward. She did, indeed, change my life.”

NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND 50TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR Thursday, June 16

is Coming Home!
SARA EVANS Thursday, July 14th
O
n September 22nd, the Houston native and country music singer/songwriter takes the stage right here at Stafford Centre. Clint says, “One of my first jobs was selling subscriptions for the Houston Post in Stafford. I also did a short run singing at Sweetwater Country Club and my solo gig started in the Southwest parts of Houston. I spent 10 years in the Houston nightclub circuit. Everytime I come back, things look different...so different I can’t believe my eyes.” With the release of his new album—On Purpose—Clint Black is back. On Purpose compiles a strikingly diverse group of Clint’s selfwritten and self-produced songs. But he’ll be playing all of your favorites at Stafford Centre. “Songs like A Better Man and Killin’ Time put me on the map. Of course I’ll play my hits and maybe a few from the new album too!” Clint is the youngest of four brothers. His brother Kevin lost his daughter, Cortney, to Rett Syndrome—a rare genetic neurological and developmental disorder that affects the way the brain develops causing a progressive inability to use muscles for eye and body movements and speech. Since that time, the Black brothers have been expanding awareness of this often misdiagnosed syndrome. “We’ve been very fortunate in the research,” says Clint. “The gene that causes Rett has been identified. That’s a lot of hope for Rett families. My hope is that we can push forward in this research to lessen, reverse, or even eradicate the symptoms. I’m asking my fellow Texans if you have a little spare change and you’re looking for a good cause, visit RettSyndrome.org. We could use your help!” “My wife Lisa is also from Houston, and I have a big piece of Texas art hanging right above my desk. Every time I look at it, I remember where I’m from. I don’t get to play my hometown that often, and I’m really looking forward to it!”

IT’S A HOUSE CLEANING DATE! by Amy Sharp
W
hen Leah Cavitt moved into her Telfair home four years ago, she was pregnant with her 4th child and needed help. “My husband found Imelda Mahoney and Mahoney’s House Cleaning in an ad. He gave her a call...and she was just the kind of help we were looking for. Imelda and her crews have cleaned our home ever since.” In the four years that Leah has used Mahoney’s, they’ve experienced tremendous growth. Still, Leah has seen no drop in service. “Everyone in the company is well-trained,” says Leah. “And when a different crew comes to our house, Imelda comes
in after and checks everything...she stays on top of it and makes sure everything is done right. They do our deep cleaning, our shutters and our fans. They change our bedding once a week. I homeschool our kids, and when we are here, they work very well around whatever we have going on. And when we’re not there, it’s spic and span when we get home.” And Mahoney’s is flexible too. “My usual day is Wednesday, but if I ask to have someone come in on Friday because I’m having a weekend event at the house, they say, “Sure!’ They’re very accommodating, they never say ‘No!’ When I had my 5th child, Imelda came in a few extra days to help me reset my house... get back on top of things. They are just incredibly helpful and resourceful. Imelda’s daughter, Casandra, has become the voice of the company...but it’s her personal company that I enjoy. Just a joy to be around.” Leah has recommended Mahoney’s House Cleaning numerous times. “Prior to Mahoney’s, I always had a single housekeeper. It would take eight hours to clean my home. With Imelda and the Mahoney’s team, they are in and out in one and half or two hours...and they are delightful when they’re at the house. I just love them and look forward to our ‘date’ once a week!” Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services 281-777-1526 mahoneyshousecleaning@yahoo.com www.mahoneyshousecleaningservices.com

Training
hen Veronica Malhiot’s physician, Dr. Liza Leal, suggested she find a small gym in her neighborhood, Veronica discovered Koko FitClub: the gym that uses technology to keep you accountable. “I just fell in love with the concept,” says Veronica. “It’s extremely motivating.” “Every member has a Koko Key loaded with their personal plan. You put it in the machine and it tells you the next exercise, weight, how many reps, and keeps you on pace. Your workout modules are designed just for you—from strength to endurance to weight loss. After the workout, you’re graded on how you did. You rack up points that in turn move you through the different levels of lanyard colors, and there are rewards for perfect scores. Most importantly, each session is filled with great information from a personal trainer. Lots of encouragement and support.” Seeing both Veronica’s results and her enthusiasm, Veronica’s husband Mark, who both trains and teaches Jiu Jitsu, joined soon after. Today, Veronica and Mark co-own the Koko FitClub location right here in Sugar Land! The concept started back in 2007. Mike Lannon (now CEO) was disappointed by the results both he and his wife were getting at a typical gym. After studying exercise science research regarding the importance of lean muscle mass and HIIT (high interval intensity training,) Mike started experimenting with marrying technology to fitness—he had the computer regulate pace, reps, progress...everything. And it worked! Mike’s wife dropped three sizes in three months. Today, driven by the now patented “Smartrainer” equipment, Koko FitClub has expanded to more than 30 states. Mark says, “How many times have you paid for a gym membership, only to arrive and wander around not knowing what it was you were supposed to be doing. That doesn’t happen here. Our fitness modules are created by our Chief Fitness Officer, Michael Wood, whose unmatched credentials include former strength and conditioning coach at UCONN. You are assigned your own user friendly personal website where you can see your progress online and can even preview your upcoming workout so you know exactly what to expect when you get to the gym. It’s always 45 minutes or less...and when you get here, the touch screens and our staff are with you every step of the way. Your goals tangible...and everyone here has a personal interest in helping you meet those goals. You can check your progress on our FitCheck machine as often as you like!” When you join Koko Fit, you become part of the Koko-Nut family. “We run little contests all the time...like ‘most perfect workouts in a month.’ Prizes range from t-shirts to Skeeters tickets. We take our Koko-Nuts outside the gym too. Join us for running or walking fun in the various 5Ks around Sugar Land!” Ready for technology driven personal training? Koko FitClub Sugar Land is set to open later this month. Visit kokosugarland.com for a free guest pass!

A smile as Big as Texas
R Come in as a patient and leave as a friend!
by Olivia Cane
oots. We typically think of them as the part of a plant that attaches to the ground and conveys water and nourishment to the rest of the plant. But there are plenty of folks who believe that roots are more than just botanical...they’re the lifeblood that establishes you deeply and firmly to a place. And for Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. in Stafford, that place is our beloved Texas. “I’m proud to be a native Texan,” explains Dr. Lomonte. “I grew up in Beaumont, received my undergraduate degree from Lamar University, and my Doctorate in Dental Surgery from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston. My kids were raised here, and since I’ve been practicing at this same location since 1982, I’m now seeing second and third generations of patients. It’s a wonderful feeling—a family feeling—when I watch patients grow up and then bring their own kids in to see me. At our office, new patients are always treated like family. Because if experience has taught me anything, it’s that while knowing ‘how’ to do your job is certainly important...it’s knowing your patients that truly makes the difference.” What that means is taking every patient’s comfort level into account, even if that patient hasn’t sat in a dental chair for twenty years. “What’s great about working with new patients, especially ones who haven’t seen a dentist in quite a while, is showing them how stress-free modern dental care is,” says Dr. Lomonte. “No matter the procedure—whether you’re getting a root canal, some fantastic new advances in straightening like Invisalign, or even a cosmetic service like porcelain veneers—it is virtually painless. When there’s nothing to stress out about, you can actually relax and maybe even have fun!” Dr. Lomonte would like to extend a warm Thomas M. Lomonte, D.D.S. welcome to you. “Your smile is our number one “Come in as a patient, leave as a friend.” priority. I would love for you to join our family.” 12122 Murphy Rd., Stafford, TX 77477 (281) 530-1440 www.drthomaslomonte.com
A Quarter Century of All-Natural Pizza!

ay Salti, father of three boys, knows that no matter what you do...your kids are going to crave pizza. That’s one reason he founded the first Pepperoni’s back in 1990 as an old-style relaxed pizza parlor with a friendly and family-oriented atmosphere. Ray says, “I was concerned about the ingredients in the food my kids were eating...so I decided to go all-natural. Every Pepperoni’s pizza uses natural mozzarella cheese and premium tomatoes for the sauce. I believe food should taste good...and be good for you too!” Today, this pizza represents a quarter century of perfection! Now made with nonGMO untreated wheat flour, whether you’re in the mood for Veggie or All the Meats, there’s a variety of toppings to choose from, including traditional favorites like pepperoni and mushrooms to more eclectic choices like meatballs, eggplant, or artichoke hearts. Everyone should get to enjoy great pizza!” Pepperoni’s also offers subs, salads, pastas, calzones, wings and desserts. The first location was such a great success that today there are 11 Pepperoni’s locations. Pearland is the most recent, there’s one coming up in the Medical Center and a planned Aliana store. Ray also owns the farm-to-table restaurant Ray’s Gourmet Country Grill in Fulshear and critically acclaimed Bollo Woodfired pizza in Upper Kirby. Ray says, “Whether you gather with friends and family for a casual meal, a fine dining experience, or order out for pizza...you deserve fresh, high-quality ingredients.
