I Survived Stage 3 Breast Cancer at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital
How We Beat Stage 3 Breast Cancer Sharalyn Croft thought she was simply being proactive when she scheduled her first mammogram shortly before turning 40. But it was a decision that would ultimately save her life, thanks to the first-class team of experts at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, who work together with a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to develop and deliver individualized care plans for breast cancer patients. Just a couple of months after having an annual check-up with her primary care physician, Dr. Rueywen Chen, of Houston Methodist Primary Care Group, Croft went in for her very first mammogram. The initial screening was abnormal, leading to a diagnostic mammogram. A tumor – eventually identified as a fastgrowing, aggressive form of breast cancer known as HER2-positive – was found. “I’d been extremely healthy all my life. I always ate well and took care of myself,” said Croft. “I wasn’t expecting that news. Nothing can prepare you for it.” What happened next was a whirlwind of emotions and appointments – months of
chemotherapy, then surgery, and eventually radiation. With her husband Collin and two young daughters by her side, along with friends from Sugar Land Baptist Church, she knew she was not alone.
Compassionate care It took no time at all for Croft – a relative newcomer to Fort Bend – to realize that she was in good hands at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. When the lump in Croft’s breast was identified by mammogram, Chen personally sought out board-certified surgeon Dr. Sandra Templeton for consultation. “Breast cancer is a terrifying diagnosis for women, especially for moms with young children, and I wanted to make sure that we were moving quickly to begin treatment,” said Chen. With no delay, Templeton saw Croft and performed an ultrasound, then sent Croft to dedicated breast radiologist Dr. Stephen Phillips, with Houston Methodist Breast Care Center at Sugar Land, for a biopsy that confirmed Stephen W. Phillips, MD Breast Radiology Sharalyn Croft her diagnosis – stage 3 Jorge Darcourt, MD breast cancer. Hematology/Oncology “Sharalyn’s cancer was growing so fast aggressive, it requires a rapid response. that I could feel the In fact, by the time Sharalyn started tumor, just a month or chemotherapy just a few days later, her so after it had been tumor was already at five centimeters.” almost undetectable by mammogram,” said Doctors working together Templeton referred Croft to Templeton. “HER2 is a protein that promotes board-certified medical oncologist the growth of cancer Dr. Jorge Darcourt, with Houston cells, and is present Methodist Oncology Partners, who in about one in every immediately started her on six rounds five breast cancer of chemotherapy. “We liked Dr. Darcourt immediately, cases. I was so grateful for all of the advice and support.” As her initial chemotherapy treatments came to an end, Darcourt told her that she Over 85% of women who develop breast cancer have would need radiation after her surgery no family history of the disease. with Templeton. Croft also appreciated the personal – and thorough – communication she received from her care team. “They took the time to really explain things to me and answer my questions, and I never felt rushed when I was with them,” she said. “I really thought of them as my coaches – they were helping me get through this experience.”

“When I first saw Dr. Shkedy, he already knew about my case and I realized then the importance of such close collaboration between all of my physicians,” said Croft. “The doctors were working together to make my treatment as effective as possible.”
Quality care, close to home Croft underwent radiation five times a week for six weeks. Throughout her chemotherapy, surgery and radiation treatments, the convenience of Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital played an important role. “The hospital is so close to home, and it was convenient not just for me, but for my friends to help me,” said Croft. “Taking my daughters to and from school would have been a lot more complicated if I had to go to the medical center every day for treatment. Receiving care close to home made my treatment easier on everyone.” Today, after her long journey, Croft is cancer-free and grateful for the care she received. “My doctors were amazing,” she said. “I didn’t know much about Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital when this journey began, but I feel blessed to have had such a great team on my side. When I told my new OB/Gyn, Dr. Bryan Blonder, about my experience, he said ‘Wow, you have one of the best teams in all of Houston.’ And I agree!”
Don’t delay. Schedule your mammogram today!
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time for reminding all women 40 and over to get an annual mammogram. “Don’t put off your mammogram; it can save your life,” said Croft. “If I had waited another year or so, it might have been too late.” To schedule a mammogram, visit

The Caring Difference B

y the time Maria Fiscal met Dr. Baltazar, she had been suffering from varicose veins for three years, and she had experienced a major setback with a different doctor. Imagine getting the go ahead from your insurance company, scheduling your procedure, and arranging time off from work...only to find out that your procedure wasn’t officially scheduled and the office staff was not sympathetic. That’s what happened to Maria. Her mother had even traveled from Mexico to help with her three daughters. Frustrated and still dealing with her varicose veins, Maria did not know what to do. A good friend recommended Dr. Ulises Baltazar and assured her things would be different this time. Maria was pleasantly surprised with how well she was treated at Dr. Baltazar’s office. Sonya and Maya put her at ease from the very beginning; they even spoke to her in both English and Spanish. She says, “Dr. Baltazar never rushed me. He explained everything and told me it’s my decision... and he gave me time to think about it. Dr. Baltazar was more interested in the root of my problem, not just a quick fix.” Extraordinary patient care. It’s one of the many reasons Dr. Baltazar has been named “Most Supporting Physician” and “Patient’s Choice.” Dr. Baltazar is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic, a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency that can cause painful varicose veins, venous stasis ulcers, as well as leg
swelling. Here he stays on top of current developments and innovative procedures, all the while taking time to get to know his patients and treating them with the timeliness and attention they deserve. He’s been diagnosing and treating diseases of the veins for over ten years, and he’s board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery with special certification in Vascular Surgery. It took a lot of courage for Maria to try again to get help for her varicose veins. Due to her friend’s referral, she was able to personally experience the caring difference of Dr. Baltazar and his staff. She says, “In the beginning I felt nervous, but Dr. Baltazar and his office staff put me at ease immediately. My procedure went just like he told me it would and my recovery was as expected. I would recommend him to my family and friends. I would recommend him to everyone.”

hen Brittany Reid decided to move forward with a breast augmentation, she consulted with five doctors. “To be honest,” says Brittany, “in some of the offices the staff was just not very nice to me. I almost felt like I was being looked down on for wanting the procedure. This was not the case at Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery, where I felt welcomed and comfortable immediately when I walked in the door. And after my consultation with Dr. Eric Humble, I was sold. He’s personable, his work is incredible, and he’s just a great doctor overall. Plus he’s from Kentucky like me!” “The day I went in for my procedure, I was so nervous,” continues Brittany. “But the staff was so nice and reassuring. I even asked the anesthesiologist if anybody had died from this procedure! I was assured that I had nothing to worry about. I can’t say enough about that, every member of the staff really worked hard to make sure I was comfortable. Then, before we got started, Dr. Humble asked if I would like to go up a few cc’s from what we had originally talked about. I told him I was fine with that, as long as I didn’t look top heavy...and I trusted Dr. Humble to do it right. Then the anesthesia took effect, and next thing I knew I woke up and there they were!” “After the procedure I did feel a little pressure. It’s very similar to the feeling of milk coming in after giving birth. On a scale of 1 to 10, my pain was about a 4. I don’t like to take meds, and I was able to manage the pain with just Tylenol (though Dr. Humble did prescribe stronger medication in the event I needed it). Within a couple of days, the pain and pressure was gone.” Dr. Humble is a Houston Breast Implant Surgeon. When you seek breast augmentation at his clinic, he sits down with you and discusses your surgical options, including the different incisions, types of implants available, and the pros and cons to each choice. “The consultation is important,” says Dr. Humble. “Because with your input, I can create an appropriate surgical plan that is unique to your individual circumstances. Breast augmentation is very personal, and each patient has different reasons for seeking the procedure. Whether you want to feel better in your clothes, improve your cleavage, improve your body image, improve your breast symmetry or balance, or reverse postpartum deflation...we can give you the result you are looking for. A result you will love!” And Brittany’s result? “I love them! I get so many compliments...so many people asking me where to go and how much I paid. I recommend Dr. Humble all the time. He is incredible!”

hen Lynn Strong moved from out of state and purchased her Sugar Land home, she hated the floors. “I wanted a reliable business to redo them, but I had not clue where to start. Someone recommended Lone Star Floors. I went in and talked to Sam. I liked both him and their products, but I still felt I didn’t know much of anything. I like a high code of ethics...the way a business treats people is important to me. I discovered Lone Star Floors has a longstanding high rating with the BBB, and I was impressed by their website. I hired them to do part of the first floor. I wanted to see if they could walk their talk!” Lynn loved the work and customer service so much, she called Sam back to do the rest of the first floor. And this past spring, she remodeled two bathrooms with Lone Star. “Sam and I spent a lot of time planning the bathrooms. For the fixtures, tubs and sinks, he provided places I could look, making it clear that he didn’t get money if I went there...just that other customers had been satisfied. Sam is very detail oriented. For every vendor he recommended, he checked back to make sure I Mohamed was satisfied, that the quality Mark Ziad of service was up to my Sam standards. He also made sure everything was completed to my satisfaction. The master originally had a medicine cabinet, and I didn’t want one. But Sam thought we might need it for resale value. Tikki Moore’s Story
hen Tikki Moore was ready to sell her home and upgrade to a bigger one, she needed to find a real estate agent. “Our first home was owner financed, so we had never used an agent before. We met Realtor Laverne Moore of KW Southwest (KWSW) at an Open House she was hosting. She was incredibly open, welcoming and knowledgeable...so we decided to go with her to both sell our existing home and help us find and buy a new home.” “To facilitate selling our home, Laverne came in and broke everything down for us,” continues Tikki. “She made suggestions on both paint and lighting that would open the space up. She helped us setup the home to get it ready to show.” And it worked. Tikki’s home was on the market a mere 2 ½ weeks. “We got more money than we expected for it. We were very happy!” For her new home, Tikki was looking for more space. A two-story home with a gameroom and four or five bedrooms to accommodate her five girls. “I was originally targeting Sugar Land,” says Tikki, “but together with Laverne we started venturing out to Richmond...where I could get more house for my money. It took about a month to find the perfect home, and Laverne was fantastic through that process. She sent me homes I

might like when she came across them. If I found a home, I would send it to her, and we would go look at it immediately...the same day! Weekends, evenings, whenever...Laverne was always available to look at a house. Once we found it, Laverne was instrumental in keeping us on track. She made sure paperwork was finished and turned in, so that we could close on the home in a timely matter.” Laverne says, “The value and education that KWSW offers its agents is incredible. That’s a real plus. We are well educated about the constantly changing rules and regulations, and we know this area. When Sugar Land didn’t quite work for Tikki, we found the perfect home in Grand Mission--which is conveniently located just off 99 near the Westpark Tollway. I know we can find the perfect home for you too!” Today Tikki and her family have lived in their new home for five months. “We love it. Lots of room for our big family! I’m proud to say that my first experience with a real estate agent was a good one. I definitely recommend Laverne and KWSW to everyone. Just wonderful to work with!” KW Southwest ~ 281-265-0000 1650 Highway 6, Ste 350 • Sugar Land, TX 77478

Celebrating Youth in Philanthropy “Through YIP, I have realized that even the slightest things that are done show that the community does care about everyone. I have broken out of my shell and become much more optimistic towards life.”~YIP Volunteer
“I loved how diverse my YIP team was. I think it’s funny how many people’s lives overlap. One of the coolest things I learned as a team member was patience. I realized that if I was more patient, I could learn from others a new perspective in any situation.”~YIP Volunteer
Shaping the leaders of tomorrow by energizing students to serve their community today is the core of the YIP (Youth in Philanthropy) experience. Developed and funded by the George Foundation and in partnership with Fort Bend Forward, the YIP program allows high school students to experience an eight month, hands-on journey in volunteerism. Dee Koch, Director of Community Engagement for the George Foundation, says, “We hope to give the YIP team members an introduction to the nonprofit sector serving Fort Bend County, and provide an experience that engages them in thinking about how they can give a hand up in their community. Many of our team members return to the nonprofits for which they volunteered to take advantage of continuing the volunteer experience.”
This year the YIP program had nearly 900 applicants. 190 of those youth have been selected to participate in the program. Twenty-three different area high schools are represented. They are from different demographics, different backgrounds, and foster different interests. They will be divided into seven teams, and they will learn how to work together to complete a volunteer program.

nonprofit sector. The George Foundation underwrites all expenses so the students participate for free, donating their time and effort. These amazing students will assist more than twenty-eight nonprofits. In the past, students have volunteered at the library, the Fort Bend County Women’s Center, museums, and public parks. They will see the full range of non-profit opportunities in our community. “I’ve learned that you shouldn’t judge someone on how they appear because you never know what they could be going through. A kind word or compliment could affect someone’s day in a good way. I’m going to start making some changes in my life. I will have more appreciation for my parents, the freedom I have and the things provided to me.”~YIP Volunteer YIP culminates in an annual luncheon in April, where student scholarships are awarded based on volunteerism. Dee says, “Our first year we gave away $46,000, then $90,000 the following year, then over $100,000, and last year over $152,000. We hope to beat
that this year! We will be looking for sponsors to name a scholarship or attend our luncheon. Our youth have made such a large investment in our community, so our community comes together to make an investment in our youth.” “Philanthropy and volunteerism go hand-in-hand,” adds Dee. “In March our students evaluate their volunteer experience based on metrics including how clear the nonprofit’s mission was and whether the tasks completed contributed to that mission. We use those evaluations to award grant money to the nonprofits...and the feedback helps them better prepare for the next generation of volunteers!” This story brought to you by Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land. Dee says, “I want to extend a huge thank you to Classic Chevy. Their commitment to this community is evident. They are an exemplary example of community support and a great role model for our YIP volunteers.”

Something to Smile About
Y
by Olivia Cane
ou’ve heard the expression, “long in the tooth.” It’s a term we use to refer to getting older. Yet curiously, there’s a foundation of truth to it. As gums recede due to periodontal disease, genetics or just old age, teeth do appear to be longer. Over time, that gum recession can become so noticeable, even the roots of your teeth are exposed. Unfortunately, this leads to the kind of decay that causes teeth to become loose and fall out. And few things are more unsettling to a person than losing the ability to chew, talk, or smile like they used to. But you know what’s amazing about living in the 21st century? Modern dentistry. And few people know more about modern dentistry than Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. “We have a brilliant solution to your receding gums,” says Dr. Lomonte. “It’s called Pinhole Surgical Technique. Unlike previous treatments such as conventional gum grafting, Pinhole Surgical Technique, or PST, is minimally invasive. It requires no cutting or stitches. Several areas can be treated at once. Your recovery is speedy, and you’ll be smiling with confidence the very same day you come into see me.” So how does PST work? Until recently, the only option gum recession sufferers had was painful skin grafts and sutures. But thanks to ingenious medical advancements, all that’s required now is a small pinhole allowing specialized instruments to reposition the gums. “The procedure is quite tolerable and involves minimal bleeding,” says Dr. Lomonte. “And less pain means patients are thrilled. In the past fifteen years, dentistry has made enormous strides toward becoming painfree. That means no matter what procedure you’re interested in, whether it’s a root canal, porcelain veneers, having a cavity filled or fixing those receding gums with PST...it’s a safe bet Come in that your experience will be a comfortable one.” as a patient Don’t wait! THEY PROTECT THE HEALTH OF THE NATION by Olivia Cane

f the recent lead-tainted water crisis in Flint, Michigan, has taught us anything, it’s that the water we drink, cook with and bathe in is a public health issue of the greatest importance. For centuries, humankind has found itself wholly dependent on having access to safe, potable H20. So who bears the responsibility for bringing us safe water in the 21st century? Plumbers, of course! Antibiotics and the polio vaccine have certainly saved lives. But the creation of piping systems for delivering clean water and removing waste from dwellings has saved countless more. Plumbing is a hazardous job. Your knees swell from working in tight crawl spaces, dragging a myriad of tools behind you. You often breathe in toxic fumes, and some of the machinery required can cause serious injury. It takes real courage and a heroic sense of public safety to do this critically vital work.
Nobody understands this better than master plumber Alan Burkhalter and his three sons, Beau, Luke, and Jake...all of whom work for Alan’s Plumbing. “I taught them everything I know about plumbing, transparency in pricing, and professionalism. But I also taught them how to work safely. Double wrenching on pipes and fittings all day can cause all kinds of physical problems. So, yeah, it’s tough work, but it’s truly rewarding. We know exactly what’s at stake when we go on a job—your family’s health and safety, and our own. Being a master plumber is a lot more involved than unclogging toilets and unstopping drains.” As the nation’s first line of defense in protecting health and sanitation, plumbers are on call holidays and weekends. This requires a huge commitment to the public they serve. “At Alan’s Plumbing, we have a long tradition of customer service,” explains Alan. “Unlike the big
chains, we are actual residents of the neighborhoods we serve. We’ve lived in the area for a long time. All three of my boys graduated from Elkins High School.” In addition to Alan’s sons, Alan’s crew includes his brother Chris, Jeff Johnson, and apprentices Jaime, Trevor, Kyle and Robert. Alan’s wife, Jennifer, is the voice you hear on the phone. With community roots comes a strong sense of accountability to the community at large. When you choose a local, independent plumbing company like Alan’s Plumbing, not only are you getting great service and fair, upfront pricing, you’re also investing in Fort Bend. That’s expert affordable service from a company that lives its values of public safety and dedication. That’s Alan’s Plumbing.

An Innovative Idea
for a Tight Master Bath
A
by Marie Page
bout a year ago, Mark Godfrey had a contractor out to give ideas and an estimate on remodeling his master bath and enlarging the shower. “To be honest, we really didn’t like what he came up with, so we let it go. Then a few months ago we read about a project Teri Gilberg (better known as ‘The Re-Modelista’) had done in a local magazine and our interest was reinvigorated. We liked what we saw, and when we checked her out on Angie’s List we found a lot of people that were happy with her service and her work. We invited her over, got an estimate and liked what we heard.” The door on Mark’s cultured marble walk-in shower was extremely narrow, and the shower was wedged in by a wall that backed up to an out-of-date jacuzzi tub. The wall behind the tub had a large window. “We wanted a bigger shower,” says Mark, “but the logistics were problematic since we couldn’t put the shower in front of the window. Teri came up with the idea to remove the wall between the tub and the shower completely, turning it into an open concept shower with a standalone tub. It was the perfect solution to dealing with the window while still enlarging the shower in the space we had.” “Our entire house has polished brass fixtures,” continues Mark, “so we didn’t want to go with a different look in the bathroom. Teri helped us located plumbing fixtures online that would go with our decor and was very honest in her opinions of what would
work and what wouldn’t. In fact, the entire process of picking finishes and fixtures was a joint effort, which I appreciated. With the extra granite from the slab purchased for the master countertop, we were able to replace countertops in our two powder rooms as well. Teri is very resourceful and conscious of budgets, another trait that is appreciated!” Mark’s master bath remodel was completed with new tile flooring. “Throughout the process—which only took about three weeks—Teri was in constant communication by text and phone. The quality of work is excellent and we are very happy with the result. It’s exactly what we were wanting! I would definitely recommend Teri and her crews to others wanting to remodel. In fact, I have more to do in my home and I will be calling her again!”

“A
few years ago, I would have thought that anyone with a substance abuse problem just needed to use a little willpower to overcome their addiction,” says Jonee Barnett, co-owner of local Miracle Method Surface Refinishing with her husband Paul. “That was before a loved one of mine was affected. My experience with the destructive nature of this disease and how it affects everyone involved fed my desire to help. I was invited to attend Fort Bend Regional Council’s Helen Cordes Award Dinner, where I was extremely moved by the success stories I heard and the mission of the organization. And I’m thrilled to co-chair the 2017 dinner with Lisa Regan.” Since 1976, Fort Bend Regional Council on Substance Abuse has been serving this community, meeting the needs of individuals and families seeking help with drug and alcohol addiction. Soon after the Council’s inception, it became apparent that substance abuse was a growing problem that needed to be addressed and that prevention was the key to reversing course. A team of FBRC counselors began working on area school campuses, meeting one-to-one and in small groups with children in high-risk situations. Since that time, the prevention team has grown to 16 Youth
Prevention Counselors working with thousands of students across three school districts every single day. In 2001, FBRC officially opened its treatment facility doors, serving more than one hundred individuals on any given night. FBRC’s treatment programs give clients a place to heal, find hope and experience the joy of overcoming addiction.

“...the prevention team has grown to 16 Youth Prevention Counselors working with thousands of students across three school districts every single day.” Helen Cordes, the namesake of FBRC’s annual award dinner and fundraiser, played a huge role in FBRC’s growth through the 1990’s. Helen’s husband, Fort Bend County Attorney Roy Cordes Jr., says, “Most everyone’s life has been touched by substance abuse in some way. The more Helen got involved with FBRC, the more passionate she became about working together to make a difference.” Helen served on the Fort Bend Regional Council’s Board of Directors for six years, three as President. She continued to serve FBRC long afterward, until she retired for health reasons. Her sincere passion for the FBRC mission
inspired all who had the privilege of working with her. The Eighth Annual Helen Cordes Award Dinner will be February 23, 2017, at the Sugar Creek Country Club. The 2017 Honorees are community advocates Ann and Jeff Council. Ann was one of the organization’s original Board members, and the Councils have long been supporters of FBRC. Vincent and Regina Morales are Honorary Chairs. Jonee says, “This year, our theme is ‘Changing Lives, Giving Hope.’ Our guest speaker is 2012 Olympic silver medalist and substance use disorder survivor Dotsie Bausch. We expect this dinner to be exceptional. Our goal is to raise $150,000... money that will make a significant impact on the citizens of Fort Bend County. All proceeds go toward breaking the cycle of addiction in families and developing self-esteem and decision-making skills in area students...critical skills to forming healthy habits.”

Lives,
Giving Hope Helen Cordes Award Dinner Guest Speaker —
Dotsie Bausch
A silver medalist from the London 2012 Olympic Games, a 7-time U.S. National Champion, a former world record holder and a 2-time Pan American gold medal winner, Dotsie Bausch is in her fifteenth year of racing. She has spent ten years as a member of the U.S. National Team and has competed in the biggest races around the world for her professional teams. While Bausch has scored major victories on the bike, perhaps her greatest victory came from resurrecting her own life from the depths of cocaine addiction and eating disorders, which threatened to take her life over a decade ago after a promising modeling career in New York City. It was during her recovery from substance use disorder that she discovered her passion for cycling. Bausch’s inspiring personal story has been chronicled in the media, and she supports women and men around the world in their battle to return to healthy eating and living habits. FBRC is honored to have Dotsie tell her story at the 2017 Helen Cordes Award Dinner.

A Backyard Oasis Makeover with an All-Natural Look by Amy Sharp
hen Steve Goodman’s small patio upgrade turned into a major renovation including his twelve year old pool, he looked for a company that could take on the entire project. “I read about Bratton Pools in a magazine, and one day I saw their truck driving through my neighborhood. I took that as a sign and gave them a call.” “I liked Mike Bratton (co-owner of Bratton Pools) immediately,” continues Steve. “He has a great demeanor and he really took the time to explain the process and answer all of my questions. I also liked that Mike, the owner of the company, would stay involved throughout the entire project. A handshake and a nod go a long way, and I just felt good about Mike and Bratton Pools.” Steve’s hunch worked out well. “My wife and I like a natural look, but we had no idea on the materials we wanted. We had a picture in mind, and Mike was able to produce that picture. He brought over samples of tile, travertine coping and other materials, and really walked us through the process. For the plaster, he showed me pictures of pebble plaster, but I couldn’t really tell what it was...so he brought samples of that too. It feels like the ocean floor...not totally smooth, but not rough either.
We went with it and we love it. Our existing pea-gravel deck was covered with a non-slip Spray-Deck surface the color of sand. The shallow pool beach entrance continues that color until it turns to an aqua, Mediterranean blue. The water just looks radiant...it’s a nice rich color. And the new tile and coping blend perfectly.” Not only does Steve love his beautiful new outdoor living space, he loved the communication and service provided by Bratton Pools. “I’m a school teacher, so I couldn’t take off to be there during the day, and I wasn’t available by phone except for one small window each day. Mike worked with me. I never took off work during construction, and the communication with me was always precise...which I really appreciated. The same was true of the invoicing. There were no hidden fees. The invoices were easy to read and exactly the pricing and costs we had been provided and that we had agreed upon.” “I would absolutely recommend Bratton Pools to anyone doing a pool or backyard upgrade or makeover,” finishes Steve. “In fact, I plan to have them back to my own home in the near future to convert my pool from chlorine to salt!” Bratton Pools ~ 281-988-7700 www.brattonpools.com

“THEY MAKE IT SO EASY TO HAVE A BEAUTIFUL HOME.” by Amy Sharp

hat’s what Renee Holmes told us about the ladies of Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services. “I switched to them about a year ago after reading about them in this publication,” says Renee. “I had been unhappy with my cleaning service. They were not reliable, frequently changed dates and times of my cleanings, and there was little consistency in the cleaning itself. This is not the case at all with Mahoney’s. They’re at my house once a week and the team is always happy. They arrive on time with a great attitude and they are great at what they do. I have kids, and they make keeping the house clean stress free!”
In addition to complete home cleaning, Mahoney’s offers what they call “Personal Touch” service. What that means is that if they see something that needs cleaning, they clean it...without you even asking! Renee says, “Once they cleaned the exterior glass of my front door. Another time I discovered my refrigerator shelves had been cleaned. I love that! I’ve also taken advantage of the extra services they offer. They’ve organized my pantry and cleaned my garage. I’ve had them over to touch up before parties. They just have a way of making everything sparkle.” “Our mission is for you to spend more time with your family and less time on the household chores,” says Imelda Mahoney, founder of Mahoney’s House Cleaning. “As a mother and business owner, I know first hand the need for a safe and clean home. That’s why I’m proud to let you know that when you leave your home to us, you are leaving it in responsible hands. We get the job done so you can focus on your family.” Renee adds, “It’s very difficult to find such excellent, reliable service, and I feel very fortunate to have found them. I absolutely recommend Mahoney’s to everyone!” Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services 281-777-1526 mahoneyshousecleaning@yahoo.com www.mahoneyshousecleaningservices.com

id you know that just three trees placed strategically around your house can cut your summer air conditioning bills by up to 50%? It’s true. Trees do so much more than breathe out oxygen and conserve energy. They provide a shady, inviting place for children to play. They provide a habitat for wildlife. And yes, sometimes they need a little extra TLC to keep them healthy, happy and functioning superbly

as extra “family members.” No one understands that better than Simpson’s Tree Service owner Cammy Simpson and her two sons, Brandon and Nicholas. “We’ve had a lot of rain in the Houston/Sugar Land area this year,” says Cammy. “Which means our trees are thriving. But it also means heavy limbs. And even limbs five feet above the roof can scrape your roof during a storm. That’s why it’s important to trim enough of the tree so that
the wind blows through.” “You also need to be mindful and have all cracked, rotten or discolored tree trunks or holes in the trunks checked out,” continues Cammy. “Trees get old and decay, becoming very hazardous and leading to dangerous situations. When storms do hit, lots of water leads to wet ground and heavy, old decayed trees fall over. Ideally, trees should be trimmed every two to three years...and old, cracked trees should be removed altogether. But with all the rain we’ve been getting, it becomes necessary to trim more often. Some of our customers are doing touch-ups yearly. That way, you ensure your trees remain good family members and not costly liabilities.” Because there’s a real science to proper tree removal and maintenance, Cammy and her two sons work with the same experienced crews they’ve teamed up with for years. They carry a million dollars in liability insurance and use all the proper safety ropes and harnesses. “There are no jobs so dangerous that we can’t handle them,” says Cammy. “Give us a call! We’d love to talk to you. At Simpson’s Tree Service, estimates are always free.” Simpson’s Tree Service 281.980.0095 www.SimpsonsTreeService.com
The First Step in Higher Education Success: Personalized Guidance Counseling by Amy Sharp

hen a young Dr. Charlene AdamsMahaley had a college work-study position as a high school college advisor, she came to a realization that would determine her life’s path. “High school guidance counseling is prescribed counseling,” says Charlene. “The role of the counselor is very demanding and focused on class scheduling and direct services...and even then it’s, ‘Come back and see me if you have problems.’ There is little to no time to give personalized counseling to students and their families. I made it my mission to help these students, so they could receive individualized college planning and advice.” After receiving her graduate degree in educational counseling, Charlene thought she would do high school counseling. What she found was...she couldn’t change the mold. “There is just not much flexibility, and you have a large student caseload. The American School Counselor Association recommends a counselor have 250 students. The reality is that in Texas, counselors average about 450 students. Once they take care of monitoring progress and attendance, discipline issues, and special advisory programs, there is little time left in the day. Yet, studies have shown that counseling is the #1 key fac-

So why is advising not the top priority?” That’s why Charlene founded Collegiate Aim Admissions--where students receive personalized and comprehensive advisement and admission services. Students as young as 7th grade come to Charlene, and she helps them discover their interests and possible college paths. A la carte services for middle school, high school and college students include college selection, admissions and degree planning, essay writing and development, graduate admissions in the Health Sciences, academic appeals, academic probation counseling, career counseling and assessment, mock admission and scholarship interviews, college internship and volunteer placement assistance, scholarship application and FAFSA assistance. “I’m your child’s advocate,” says Charlene. “I don’t make decisions for them, but I help with the research so they can make an educated decision. lizabeth Welch fosters a number of rescue kittens and cats. One of her foster cats was having ongoing potty problems--diarrhea. “At one point this cat had been adopted, but sent back to me because of the health issue,” says Elizabeth. “I tried several veterinarians to help me get the cat healthy. But the problem was: I could not get a pill down...and I tried everything. The cat would claw and foam at the mouth. I would get ½ a pill down and the rest would roll across the floor...and the cat needed a 10 day course of pills! There was no way. This went on for six months and I was at my wit’s end.” Elizabeth decided to try Dr. Kevin Pina at Lighthouse Veterinary Clinic in Sugar Land. Lighthouse Veterinary Clinic prides itself on utilizing the latest advances in medical and information technologies. Elizabeth experienced this first hand. “Dr. Pina recommended we compound the medication in a cream that I rub inside the cat’s ear and then it’s absorbed transdermally. Of course I said, ‘Let’s do it!’” “Dr. Pina contacted Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy in Sugar Land and told them exactly what I needed,” continues Elizabeth. “I went to pick it up and was greeted by an extremely nice and helpful staff that gave me instructions on what to do. Ten days later we returned to Dr. Pina for an ‘all clear’...and the cat was adopted that same afternoon! We’re all happy as clams!” Started in 2003 by Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph., Campbell’s Compounding provides compounded and conventional medications for your entire family...including the four-legged members. Dr. Campbell says, “We work closely with your veterinarian to compound the best treatment for your pet. Your life is a lot easier when necessary medications are in forms pets are willing to take. As Elizabeth learned, compounded creams can be rubbed into the ear, and what pet doesn’t love a good ear rub! We can also compound flavored liquids, creams, and chewable treats...flavored with fish, chicken or beef. Your dog or cat might just be left begging for more!” “To be honest, I did not even realize Campbell’s was right in Sugar Land,” says Elizabeth. “Medicine that tastes good or can be absorbed through the skin...where was this concept when my children were little? Not only is it convenient, it works like a charm. Both Dr. Pina and Campbell’s Compounding are thinking outside the box...and that’s huge. They are a benefit to this community and I’m sure I will be back at both. In fact, I’m making Dr. Pina my vet of choice for my personal pets. And when and if my pets need meds...I will be getting them from Campbell’s!”

I drove to St. Michael’s and they had me stitched up and out of there in under an hour. Another time I took my young son in the middle of the night. He was very sick and I knew at St. Michael’s we would be seen right away. Not only did we get in immediately, they were fantastic. id you know that the Montessori name is not well protected by trademark? “It’s true,” says Montessori Kids Universe Head of School, Dr. Rebecca Deurlein. “Unfortunately, what that means is that nearly anyone can hang up a Montessori sign, even if they’re not operating under Montessori guidelines. It’s why we are excited to open the very first area Montessori Kids Universe right here in Sugar Land. From our teachers to our materials, layout and philosophy, we are completely, 100 percent Montessori.” While Montessori Kids Universe employs the authentic Montessori way of teaching, it is also enriched with Montessori Kids Universe’s proprietary, Reggio Emilia-inspired curriculum called DaVinci Kids. Reggio Emilia-inspired schools place great emphasis on encouraging children to explore independently with teachers
acting as guides. Rebecca says, “Reggio Emilia is completely unique to this area. It adds science and art opportunities for our students in a room specially designed to encourage discovery. It’s extremely hands-on and driven by children’s natural curiosity. We take them to the highest level of thinking we can take them.” As you search for the perfect preschool for your child, you are likely to come across several different teaching approaches and philosophies. Although the aim of each school remains the same—to educate the “whole child” and prepare him for advanced learning environments and the life ahead—the different philosophies vary in their curriculum, environment, and ways of teaching. Rebecca says, “I know choosing a preschool is no easy task. I’ve been there. I always encourage parents to really delve into a school when considering it for their young child. A school that is
100% Montessori will look very different. You can see the Montessori philosophy infused in everything. Unlike classic preschools, students in Montessori classrooms are working quietly and independently. The teacher is there for guidance, not teaching at the front of the room. There is no running around, chaos, or disrespect in a Montessori classroom. In fact, appropriate behavior, responsibility, and consideration of others are integral parts of the curriculum.” Montessori Kids Universe is currently accepting new students. here are three reasons people stop working out at the gym: time, money and poor results. Sure, we all dream about seeing the results you get with a personal trainer, but who can afford one? Imagine going to a gym where your personal trainer is a computer and touch screen TV that knows your body even better than you do. Imagine all of your strength training on one machine and not worrying if your next station is taken. Imagine never having to wonder whether you’re exercising correctly. Imagine cutting the length of your workout in half. Welcome to what the LA Times enthusiastically refers to as “The future of fitness.” Welcome to Koko FitClub! “Koko FitClub is like having a personal trainer who is always available and never has a scheduling conflict,” says Veronica Malhiot, who with her husband Mark, coowns the Sugar Land location. “When I first tried it, I fell in love with the concept. Previously, I’d worked out hard...but I just wasn’t getting the results I was looking for.” “Then I started working out with Koko’s Smartraining machines, and within weeks could see a visible difference. My legs were better toned, my stomach was flatter, my waist was smaller. I was finally leaning out. Suddenly, going to the gym didn’t seem like a chore. The more success I had, the more I wanted to go.” So how does Koko FitClub work? Every member has a USB Koko Key loaded with their personal plan based on their fitness level...whether it’s for weight loss, toning and/or strength training. And it’s tailored to you. If you want to spend extra time training muscles that could improve
your golf game, Koko FitClub has a program for that! Your Koko Key is inserted into a machine that tells you the next exercise, how much weight to use, how many reps to perform and even what pace to use! Every workout module is designed just for you, and should you need help or have questions, you also have access to a personal trainer of the human variety. It’s a win-win! Koko FitClub is designed for the person wanting to work smarter, not harder...and get awesome results! Drop in and become a “Koko-Nut” today!

op quiz: How do you know you live in Texas? Three answers: It’s October and you still have no use for a sweater. Pumpkins are fun, but they only remind you of crisp autumn nights elsewhere in the country. And you are running the air conditioner in both your house and your car. “In Texas, our days don’t just get colder gradually. It happens all at once,” says Brian Jackson of Jackson Air and Heat. “Once a cold front blows through, temperatures around here can drop 40 degrees in an hour. And when you finally turn your heat on, you don’t want a rust hole in your furnace leaking carbon monoxide into your home.” “What you need is a certified professional to inspect the inside and outside vent systems for blockage and leakage,” explains Brian. “You need an amp-draw test conducted on the blower motor to make sure your unit is running safely and efficiently. There are just too many wires and mechanical components that can go wrong, which is why so many countries make annual furnace inspections a mandatory thing.”
Brian acknowledges that most people’s impression of a “furnace safety check” is having a contractor come out, stare at the furnace, check off boxes on an inspection sheet that’s attached to a clipboard, and then leave. “But the truth is, a real inspection—a good one—is a lot more complicated than that. And it isn’t just about safety. A thorough inspection is also about preventative maintenance. You always want to catch a problem before it’s 30 degrees outside and your furnace quits working. No one wants to pay emergency rates. I don’t want you paying emergency rates.” But the best reason for having your furnace inspected now instead of waiting? “It pays to not procrastinate,” says Brian. “Every heating contractor is considerably busier when the weather turns cold. That means fewer appointments are available to you when you need one. So it’s a good idea to get a jump on the ‘competition’ and schedule a visit from us now.” Or maybe your old system barely made it through the summer. If that’s the case, now is a great time to replace it with a high
efficiency Trane system. Take advantage of 0% financing or up to $2000 in instant rebates and low off-season pricing. Jackson Air and Heat is proud to be EPA and NATE certified, repeat winners of the “Award of Excellence” from the Better Business Bureau and recipient of the Angie’s List Super Service Award. They are Trane Comfort Specialists and the oldest independent Trane Dealer in the area. “We love our work and we love this community,” says Brian. “We bring the same level of service to a system inspection as we do to a full installation. Your comfort is our business!”

xciting things are happening at Foot & Ankle Associates! Founder Dr. Marco A. Vargas says, “Our Sugar Land location is running out of space so we are relocating...we open December 1st on Williams Trace. We will continue to serve you at our second location: Memorial Hermann Southwest. Plus...we’ve expanded our team of doctors!” What this means for you is even more comprehensive coverage in podiatry close to home. Dr. Vargas has long been hailed for his use of advanced podiatry technologies like the HyProCure stent procedure for flat foot, K-Laser and FootMaxx orthotics to help you or your child heal fast. Dr. Alicia L Johnson—a colleague of Dr. Vargas since 2014—continues to specialize in forefoot surgery along with wound care of the foot and ankle. Dr. Vargas is thrilled to welcome the wellpublished Dr. Sloan Gordon, Chief of the Podiatry Section, Department of Surgery at Memorial Hermann Hospital Southwest
who specializes in complex reconstructions of the foot and ankle. He is also excited to welcome Dr. Manasi Sadhale, a surgically trained podiatrist who also focuses on the diabetic foot and wound care. She is also a national level gold medalist in table tennis! “We are excited about expanding and our new doctors,” says Dr. Vargas. “We can serve more patients and we speak multiple languages, including Hindi, Portuguese, English and Spanish. We’ve also added online scheduling so you don’t even have to call the office for an appointment!” What else is new at Foot & Ankle? Vionic shoes! Dr. Vargas says, “These shoes are unique in that they have an orthotic built in designed by a podiatrist. They’re a great alternative for those that don’t want to or can’t wear an orthotic. This is Texas...and most of us barely wear shoes anyway. Now you can get your flip-flops complete with an orthotic.” Foot pain is never normal–schedule an appointment today, be seen today! www.upclosemagazine.com

Your Diabetes and Thyroid
SPECIALIST F by Amy Sharp
aced with a diagnosis of a hormonal condition like diabetes or thyroid disease, your first inclination is probably to follow your doctor’s orders. Dr. Mohammed Ansari of Complete Endocrine Care says, “Most general practitioners have the skills necessary to diagnose and treat basic hormonal conditions. However, just as not all people are one-size-fits-all, neither is the treatment of diabetes and thyroid disease. An endocrinologist is a specialist who has thoroughly studied hormonal conditions and knows the best possible treatments, even when conventional treatments do not work well for an individual. We’ve done an additional two year fellowship studying the endocrine system, and we provide individualized care to help our patients manage their conditions.” Not only is an endocrinologist trained to specifically help you, they have access to all of the latest treatments. Dr. Ansari says, “Our knowledge and understanding of hormonal diseases is constantly chang-

ing. My job is to know these changes and understand the newest treatments available, like the cutting edge nuclear treatment for hyperthyroid. What I do is provide you with all of your options, and then assist you in making the best choice to manage your condition. To do that it’s imperative I stay up to date on the latest, most innovative treatments available.” Does this mean you no longer need your primary care doctor? “Absolutely not!” says Dr. Ansari. “I’m a partner to your primary care doctor. We work together to give you the best care possible. Think of an endocrinologist as another set of eyes managing your condition...a set of eyes specifically trained to help you take control and manage your condition through individualized care.” Dr. Ansari grew up in India and did his residency at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. He received extensive training in treating common and complicated disorders in endocrinology—including diabetes and hyperthyroidism—at Houston
