Confidence
[How things got started]
W
ay back when, a beautiful young intern in Internal Medicine from Mexico City met a guy from Kentucky at a chance meeting in the Methodist Cafeteria. Fast forward nearly 20 years and today that couple is raising two amazing sons, and have established the preeminent facility for personal transformation through the medical arts of plastic surgery and skin correction techniques. And now...Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery has expanded to Katy! Board certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Eric Humble, says, “During my residency in Head and Neck Surgery, I was fortunate to be mentored by a famous plastic surgeon, Dr. James Carraway who told me after the first time I operated with him that he was going to turn me into a Plastic Surgeon. Because of him and his vision for me, I went on to complete a second residency in Plastic Surgery. He taught me that patients that have facelifts live an extra seven years. At first this concept did not seem valid, because I did not understand the role of self confidence in one’s life. This was confirmed after I performed my first facelift during residency. My patient found renewed love of life, began working out, and making healthy choices. That moment helped me form my philosophy of care: every patient should walk out of our office feeling confident...because confidence changes lives!” Your consultation with Dr. Humble will be comfortable, like
talking with a friend. He says, “Tell me what’s bothering you and we’ll start small. I’ll explain the options and the outcomes you can expect. We offer a full range of solutions from simple but effective skin care products to injectables to facial rejuvenation, breast augmentation, and body contouring. With our in house AAAASF certified surgical center we have the full gamut under one roof. My only goal is to erase those imperfections that drive you crazy. We want every patient to feel excited about life after a visit with us!” “My favorite thing is getting to know my patients. I believe that handing out my cell phone number keeps me accountable,” says Dr. Humble. And his wife Dr. Lin Humble agrees. “Eric would always rather answer a text then have a patient worry,” says Lin. “Answering quick texts doesn’t take much time...and putting patients at ease is extremely rewarding!” Dr. Humble says, “I still thank God daily that Dr. Lin Humble is my wife, partner and mother of my children. During the workday we’re so busy, we hardly have a chance to see each other...but at home we rejoice in our shared vision for the future and the love we share with each other and our family.” When you look in the mirror, do you like what you see? “Rejuvenation is about making your vision of yourself a reality,” says Dr. Humble. “So that you can enjoy your life to the fullest!”

er name is Alegria Chaluh, but you can call her Coca. Originally from Argentina, Coca has traveled the world. After retiring from a major oil company, she has maintained her sense of adventure and wanderlust. At the age of eighty-two she says, “I need to see the world all over again.” She lives in Sugar Land with her husband of sixty years. Her children and grandchildren live nearby. Coca has always taken care of herself by maintaining her weight and keeping in shape. She still runs a 5K every Fourth of July. As she developed a problem with varicose veins, she did not like the discomfort and how they affected the look of her legs. She saw an article about Dr. Baltazar while visiting someone at Methodist hospital and immediately made an appointment for a consultation with him about her varicose veins. Dr. Ulises Baltazar is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery with special certification in Vascular Surgery. He is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular
Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic, a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency that can cause painful varicose veins, venous stasis ulcers as well as leg swelling. Dr. Baltazar has been diagnosing and treating diseases of the veins for over ten years. Coca first saw Dr. Baltazar in April and has been very satisfied with her results. Her legs look better and are less painful. From her very first visit to Dr. Baltazar’s office, Coca could tell how kind he was to everybody. When she says he treats his patients like family, she really means it. Coca says, “From the beginning I could see how much he really cares about his patients. He’s a good man. I told him, ‘Treat me like your own mother,’ and he did that. He took care of me then, and he is still taking care of me. When Dr. Baltazar treated my varicose veins he worked on the root of the problem; it was not just a cosmetic correction.” Dr. Baltazar has been named “Most Supporting Physician” and “Patient’s Choice.” He doesn’t just stay on top of current developments and innovative procedures...he takes the time to get to know his patients and treats them with the timeliness and attention they deserve. Just like Coca says, “He treats his patients like family.”

an you believe it’s been an entire year since the last time you lost your mind in holiday traffic? There’s no avoiding it. Every year, we promise ourselves that we’re going to do things differently—less shopping, less stress, more time with the family. Now imagine wanting to have a more enjoyable and relaxing holiday, but instead of external stressors, there are internal ones. Ones you can’t see. That would be your entire hormonal system. Teenagers aren’t the only ones who suffer from out-of-whack hormones. Perimenopause, full-blown menopause AND male menopause (characterized by low testosterone and low libido) are not only common, they’re inevitable. What’s not inevitable is how harshly those diminishing hormone levels are going to affect your health, your mood and your happiness. “Hormones affect every system in the body,” says Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. at Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. “The problem is hormones aren’t ‘real’ to us. We can’t see them. They’re not tangible. So we tend to dismiss them and undervalue their importance. But the symptoms are pretty easy to see—unexplained weight gain, loss of energy, diminished sex drive, erectile dysfunction, memory loss, muscle mass diminishment, depression. Even though you can’t see it, it’s a very important balance.” So what’s the first step in getting your hormones back in balance? Schedule a personal hormone consultation at Campbell’s Compounding. “When you come in for a personal consultation, we perform a saliva test to check your hormone levels. Then we work closely with your doctor or our partner doctor close by to study your results. If needed, we can recommend a custom dosage of bio-identical hormones made just for you. All prescriptions are authorized by the doctor, and we monitor your progress together.” Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy Don’t drag your feet through the holidays...no “If our staff can’t make it… then you probably don’t need it!” amount of holiday traffic can throw you off your game if you are looking and feeling your Sugar Land • 281-980-2555 radiant best. I was scared to death. I thought, ‘I’m not doing that! They’d have to drag me in there.’ Plus, my missing tooth was in a place that people couldn’t see... so I just put it off.” Monica put off the implant for two years, until her husband Lewis, a Physician Assistant (PA), convinced her it needed to be taken care of. scheduled the appointment. “I drove myself to Stafford and I was literally shaking. But the entire staff at Dr. Lomonte’s office was just wonderful. I felt so welcome. I experienced no pain and no discomfort through the procedure, and I was in and out in about 30 minutes. I proceeded to spend over an hour shopping at Costco, and then drove home and ate dinner with my family. I took one Tylenol...but honestly, I don’t think I even needed it! It was crazy! I’ll never go to another dentist no matter how far away I move.” An implant with no discomfort? How is this possible? “iSy implants,” says Dr. Lomonte. “iSy implants (pronounced ‘easy’) are a remarkable milestone in dental innova-
tion. They require fewer instruments and fewer steps than traditional implants. And it’s true...there is very little discomfort which is really phenomenal in an implant this durable and foolproof. It’s so easy you really can come in over your lunch break and have the procedure done.” In Galveston, Monica and Lewis manage Affinity Laser + Med Spa where they help people enhance their natural beauty through medical aesthetics and cosmetics. And now they have a dental go-to. “I send every patient I have to Dr. Lomonte for dental work,” says Lewis, a PA of more than 15 years. “It’s a bit of a drive from Galveston to Stafford, but so worth it!”

Putting Your

BUNION SURGERY WITHOUT CASTS OR CRUTCHES

f you suffer from bunions, you already know they’re no joke. Bunions are painful deformities that occur on the joint of the big toe when it’s forced inward. Bunions are most commonly associated with women—we pay a price for those adorable high-heeled, narrow-toed shoes. But even men can get crippling bunions...as anyone who has one leg marginally longer than the other will tell you. Bunions often form on the foot of the longer leg. The affected foot will ache unbearably since the big toe joint flexes when you walk. If you heard in the past that bunion surgery is painful, then you haven’t read about the work being done by Dr. Marco Vargas at Foot & Ankle Associates in Sugar Land. Dr. Vargas uses a virtually painless technique that takes about 30 minutes under “twilight” anesthesia. Patients walk again the same day. And in just 2-3 weeks, they can go back to wearing regular shoes...and a few weeks later they can even wear the narrow-toed high heels that may have been painful in the first place!
“Never wait until the pain turns unbearable and limits your activities,” says Dr. Vargas. “Especially since we can help you regain an active and pain-free lifestyle in almost no time.” In less painful cases, Dr. Vargas often prescribes other non-surgical options, including physical therapy, custom orthotics and Vionic shoes—which can be found in the Foot & Ankle retail store, FootSource DPM, along with many other items including antifungal nail polish, bunion pads and splints to relieve the discomfort. Dr. Vargas is very excited to announce that he will be moving to a larger space located at 59 and Williams Trace Blvd in December of this year. He will be joined by Dr. Alicia Johnson, Dr. Sloan Gordon and Dr. Manasi Sadhale. “We’ve put together a fantastic team to help you and are excited to have the extra space to introduce our robotic pain laser and 3D CT scanner in the near future,” says Dr. Vargas. “Don’t get sidelined by foot pain. Your life is too important. Call or go online to schedule an appointment today with us–same day appointments are always available.” www.upclosemagazine.com

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY
Here’s to
40 Years!
T
by Abby Lolla
he first Chiropractor to establish an office in Sugar Land celebrated 40 years in practice on Thursday, September 22. Dr. Steve Harris opened Harris Neck & Back Center in the Randalls shopping center on Hwy 6 at Williams Trace Blvd in 1982 after practicing in Houston since 1976. Six years later he moved across Hwy 6 in the First Colony Professional Building behind McDonalds as Sugar Land Health Center where it remains today. “I love having 40 years experience,” says Dr. Harris. “When we moved here in 1982 there were mostly open fields on Highway 6 including the Frost ranch with herds of cattle and horses grazing. All the trees were small and freshly planted. I wondered then how First Colony would look when all the trees grew.” Dr. Steve Harris has always been involved in the community, especially through his church and Rotary. Dr. Harris was asked to be the charter president of the Sugar Land Rotary club in 1985 that meets on Wednesdays at noon at Sweetwater Country Club. He was a charter member of the First Colony Church of Christ where he is a deacon of humanitarian service. In the Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Harris was a charter member of the Small Business & Professional committee. In 1997, Dr. Harris became the Rotary District 5890 Governor over 57 Rotary clubs in a nine county area including Ft. Bend and Harris counties. Through Rotary and his church, Dr. Harris has been a co-founder or leader in projects like: Hunger Plus, Children of the Dump, breaking the cycle of poverty for whole villages, Concern for Hunger Rotary International committee, Sugar Land’s Four Corners area trash cleanup projects, Darrington maximum security prison funding for repurposing a gym into a seminary for long term inmates, a Rotary program called REACT that helped about 50 children from other countries get medical help here and converting an abandoned University campus in Santiago, Chile area into a trade school for those in poverty. “I enjoy helping patients today more than ever. The breakthroughs in techniques and technology are producing stronger results than ever before. I’m helping herniated disc patients now that I once referred for pain management injections or surgery. For headaches that come from the upper neck, I once was able to get rid of them in 1 ½ hours after treatment. Now the headache is significantly improved or gone in minutes. It’s very gratifying to help patients like that.” When asked about retirement, Dr. Harris replied, “I can’t think of anything I would enjoy more than what I’m doing now. It doesn’t seem like work to me. I love helping people and people of all kind.”

A Holistic Approach to Feeling Better Primary care physician Dr. Julia Ward first became interested in bio-identical hormones when she wanted them for herself. “I was very fatigued and run down,” says Dr. Ward. “And bio-identical hormones aren’t something generally taught in med school. I wanted to know what they were and how they work, so I attended a conference and signed up for a fellowship with The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.” “I underwent functional medical tests including a hormone saliva test and a micronutrient test,” continues Dr. Ward. “What we found was in part my fatigue was due to an MTHFR genetic mutation...where I process B vitamins less efficiently. By treating this condition and utilizing hormone replacement, I feel 100% better. Everything in the body is connected, and that is why here at Balanced Body Image we take a holistic approach. If we can uncover the underlying cause, you can get clinically good results. I take a natural approach to everything, and use herbal and natural remedies where I can.” When you seek bio-identical hormones with Dr. Ward, she may run blood, urine and/or saliva tests based on the way you prefer to have hormones delivered. “We always deliver the hormones estrogen and testosterone as either a pellet inserted under the skin or as a transdermal cream. I usually test your thyroid as well, and may do a neurotransmitter test and a four point cortisol test if I suspect stress is a factor. Micronutrient and gut health testing and others are also possibilities based on your individual case. And once I understand what’s going on, I can get to helping you feel better.” Dr. Ward graduated from the University of Southern California School of Medicine and has been a primary care physician for more than twenty years. Prior to moving here, she traveled the world with her husband, Dr. John Ward—a urology oncologist at MD Anderson. Both she and her husband did their training in the Navy. John and Julia and their five children live in Sienna Plantation. They are both fitness enthusiasts who compete in bodybuilding and figure competitions. In addition to bio-identical hormones, Balanced Body Image offers a full range of anti-aging services including the kybella, SkinPen (microneedling), Botox and fillers, and other aspects of skin care. Improved
Qualityof Life
...That’s Dr. Reading’s Goal for You by Amy Sharp
F
or more than 20 years, local neuropsychiatrist Dr. William H. Reading has been improving quality of life for adults, adolescents and children. From recovery services to psychiatric care to Major Depressive Disorder, Dr. Reading takes a whole person approach to treatment. “Living conditions, medications, vitamins, supplements, work conditions, sleep patterns, life choices, occupation, relationships...they all contribute to your whole person,” says Dr. Reading. “Therefore, when we treat both adults and children, we can’t just treat the symptoms. We must first understand what a person’s illness is and what it isn’t. Then we can make sustainable lifestyle modifications to deal with the problem. Sometimes the best way to deal with a minefield is to fence it off and walk around it, rather than through it. Through talk therapy, we can begin to understand your liabilities and strengths. And then we can deal with the liabilities.” Together with his wife, registered nurse Teresa Cox Reading, Dr. Reading treats a variety of psychiatric illnesses—including depression and ADD/ ADHD—at his office on the Southwest Freeway. In addition to traditional psychiatric care, Dr. Reading also provides recovery services from opiate and alcohol dependencies. “We are proud to offer the Suboxone and Vivitrol programs for addiction,” says Teresa. “And stayed tuned, we have new therapies for addiction on the horizon.” For patients that have failed multiple treatments for Major Depressive Disorder, Dr. Reading provides the cutting-edge NeuroStar Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). Teresa says, “NeuroStar TMS is the only FDA-cleared, non-drug, non-invasive treatment for major depression. It’s now widely used, and for some, a better course of treatment than the other modalities. It’s been so successful that today some insurances will pay for it on a case by case study.” Both Dr. Reading and Teresa successfully completed the TMS course of study at Harvard Medical School. In this treatment, highly focused MRI-strength magnetic pulses stimulate nerve cells in an area of the brain that is thought to regulate mood. This stimulation triggers a cascade of neurochemical events and helps normalize neurotransmitter function, improving your outlook from the inside out. Teresa says, “If Dr. Reading determines you are a Teresa Cox Reading, RN candidate, we work as a team. As nurse, I deliver all of William H. Reading, MD atheregistered TMS treatments personally 281-494-4471 on-site. everal years ago, Dr. Joe Anzaldua of OakBend Medical Group Sugar Land Family Practice experienced a medical emergency on a Saturday. “I called my physician,” says Dr. Anzaldua. “And because it was after hours, he recommended I go to St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms. Let me tell you, I was impressed. Everybody in the ER was attentive and sweet...and fast! I was seen immediately, and they did a complete workup. Fortunately, everything was fine.” Since that visit, Dr. Anzaldua has returned to St. Michael’s with various family members needing emergency attention. “They’re everything you want in an emergency room: fast and thorough with a staff that is courteous and professional. Many of my patients have been seen at St. Michael’s. From a physician’s perspective, the reports and records that I get
for my patients that are seen at St. Michael’s are excellent. Depending on the situation, I’ve even had the ER physician call me. Again...that’s thorough care. What we all want in an ER.” St. Michael’s co-founder, Dr. Shannon Orsak, says, “Dr. Anzaldua is right...when you or a family member require emergency care, you want fast and thorough. That’s why we have an on-site radiology department complete with x-ray and CT scan, ultrasound and an onsite lab…you never have to wait for a diagnosis and a confirmation. We can treat everything from allergic reactions and broken bones to high fevers and chest pain. Our community is blessed with great doctors like Dr. Anzaldua. Here at St. Michael’s we complement that outstanding care with exceptional emergency services when you need it. ”

PERSONALIZED FITNESS + BUILT IN MOTIVATORS = A WINNING COMBINATION

r. Liza Leal first heard of Koko FitClub—the gym that uses smart technology to keep you accountable—in Lakeway, Texas. And she was excited when one opened right here in Sugar Land. “I’ve been a member since before their grand opening,” says Dr. Leal. “It’s an enhancement that takes my workouts to another level. The equipment and approach fill in the gaps, and create feedback and consistency for better overall fitness.” As a member at Koko, you have a USB Key loaded with your personal plan based on your fitness level...it could be weight loss, toning and/or strength training. When you arrive, just insert your Koko Key into a machine and it shares with you the next exercise, including a video showing correct format, how much weight to use, how many reps to perform and even what pace to use. With the cardio equipment and your individual cardio key, you can access different fitness level videos...from walking to running hills. “Koko is framed in a way that in 45 minutes or less you receive what would have been a 90 minute traditional workout,” continues Dr. Leal. “I truly appreciate the meaning of the word ‘Koko.’ In Japanese, it means ‘individual’ or ‘one to one.’ I love that my workouts are personalized to my goals and needs, especially since I’m dealing with rheumatoid arthritis. As a physician, it’s an easy recommendation for my patients who need exercise for stress management, chronic pain, weight loss or merely the simplicity of total wellness.” “Koko’s smart training methodology is driven by exercise science. With this innovative gym, not only do you have the physical accomplishment, you also have the constant verbal motivator through the smart technology. Psychological confirmation is a key to building a better you. And that’s important! The end result is about feeling good and doing something for our body, because it’s the one vessel we are given. Take care of it and it takes care of you.”

id you know? The busiest day of the year for plumbers in the U.S. is the day after Thanksgiving. Local business Alan’s Plumbing knows you don’t want to be one of those statistics. There are preventive measures you can take, including being mindful of what goes in your garbage disposal. “Remember to always run a lot of water through the garbage
disposal so that the food passes through the line easier,” says Alan Burkhalter, owner and master plumber at Alan’s Plumbing. “Bleach is also great to put down the line...it helps break down the food. And finally, don’t put anything in your garbage disposal in large quantities.” But even with cautious garbage disposal use, there will be times
you need a plumber. That’s why you have Alan’s Plumbing—a good old-fashioned mom and pop operation that prides itself on quality service—right here in your neighborhood. The Mentore’s Story
hen Shelitta Mentore’s son Sheldon was relocating to Texas, she accompanied him to Houston to househunt. “We were driving around neighborhoods and I saw a house for sale, listed by Angelia McDaniel with KW (Keller Williams) Southwest. Although my son already had an agent, I jotted down Angelia’s information for future reference.” With Sheldon’s job offer in place, he was ready to make the move. But he had no place to live. “The agent he was working with took days to return calls. He was getting nowhere and time was running out. Since he had not signed a representation agreement with his current agent, I asked if he wanted to contact Angelia. Angelia was able to help and got Sheldon a rental home in less than a week!” Soon after, Shelitta and her husband Brent were ready to join their son in Texas. “We called Angelia and again, explained our situation. She put us on track by connecting us with a KWSW short sale specialist in GA to sell our Atlanta home. Then she found us a rental here in Texas. Once our short sale waiting period was over, she helped us buy a home. Since then, she’s also helped Sheldon and his wife Orletta purchase a home. She’s just been invaluable to our family!”
by Amy Sharp
Angelia says, “I’m truly excited that both Mentore families are now happy Texas homeowners. That’s what we do here at KWSW...no matter your situation, we are here to help. For Shelitta and Brent, I utilized my lending partner to help them purchase a home after their short sale in GA. Coincidentally, they then purchased a short sale here. Sheldon and Orletta had actually signed a contract on a new home without the advice of an agent. When that started going south, they contacted me. I helped them out of that contract and into the purchase of a resale home. We worked through several stages of challenges in both couples’ situations... and now they both own homes they love!” “What I liked about Angelia through every transaction and situation is that she has never pushed us,” says Shelitta. “She’s not overbearing or imposing, and when we needed space, she gave us space. She just told us everything would be ok and solved any problem that arose. And she’s attentive. While shopping for homes, if we saw one we wanted to look at she was on it like butter on bread. She handles negotiating in a classy yet firm manner, and has an eye for making sure there are no errors. Plus, she is just fantastic and has a great personality. If I had to do it all over again, I would do it with her!” KW Southwest ~ 281-265-0000 1650 Highway 6, Ste 350 • Sugar Land, TX 77478

Get Ready to be
Unstoppable
All Year!
by Olivia Cane
E
ver notice how a little bit of planning can save you a ton of money throughout the year? When it comes to clothes and household items, what three words thrill a bargain shopper’s heart more than “post holiday sales?” Saving a ton of money is exactly why winter is your best time to buy when it comes to a major appliance like an air conditioner. “Most people make the mistake of waiting until summer to upgrade their system,” explains Brian Jackson of Jackson Air & Heat. “But summer isn’t the smartest bet if you want to take advantage of off-season pricing. You’re also having to compete for appointment space because during any good Sugar Land summer, the best A/C guys are booked.” But there’s another money-smart reason to junk an old, inefficient, money-sucking air conditioning system and get Jackson Air and Heat to install a brand new TRANE Variable Speed XV20i system with TruComfort technology now while the prices are rock bottom: 60 months at 0% financing or instant rebates.
“I love to save money when I can,” says Brian. “And I’m guessing you do, too. My dad always used to tell me that if you want the best appliances at the best price, always ask what a professional uses. When my own A/C went out some time ago, I replaced it with a TRANE Variable Speed XV20i. I can honestly tell you it’s the best system available for our demanding climate—it’s quiet, my energy bills have been much lower because of its high efficiency, and it cools every room in the house, including upstairs.” As the oldest TRANE dealers in Sugar Land, Jackson Air and Heat has been servicing air conditioners here for over thirty years. They’ve clearly been living up to expectations...having received the Angie’s List “Super Service” award and the BBB Award of Excellence. “We love what we do and we do it right,” says Brian. “Whether it’s a new air conditioner installation or a furnace check, we are proud to observe the three Ps of great service—punctuality, price, and professionalism.” Now may be the best time to enjoy off-
season prices on an air conditioner with zero interest, but living in Southeast Texas means your air conditioner itself is never off-season. 80 degree and 90 degree days crop up over the winter when residents least expect them. “I’ve lost count of how many Christmases we’ve had to run the air conditioner,” says Brian. “There have been plenty of winters where we had the air conditioner going all season. You really need your A/C to be unstoppable all year. And for that, Trane is your best bet. Nothing can stop a Trane!”

Her Life’s Path... Changed by a Montessori Four-Year-Old
M
ontessori Kids Universe isn’t content with doing the minimum. “We strive for excellence in everything, and that applies to our teachers, first and foremost. We only hire the best for our students,” says Head of School Dr. Rebecca Deurlein. One such teacher is Michelle Sotelo, who fell in love with the Montessori concept more than 20 years ago. “I was on a full electrical engineering scholarship at U of H. Needing some extra cash, I responded to an ad for a teaching assistant at the Montessori Learning Institute. On my very first day, I went to put away sensorial material called a Trinomial Cube. What caught me was...I was an engineering student and I couldn’t put it together! A fouryear-old asked if I needed help and proceeded to teach me how to do it. I couldn’t believe it!” “My favorite high school teacher always said I should be a teacher,” continues Michelle. “But I thought, ‘No way!’ That four year old and the Trinomial Cube changed my mind. I took Montessori training that same year and started teaching the following year. It’s been a beautiful ride and I’ve never looked back!” Over Michelle’s 22 years of teaching Montessori, she’s always had a wait list to get into her class. Former students frequently send her pictures, and it’s not uncommon for students of years past—some now teenagers and college students—to give her hugs when she’s out and about. Today, Michelle’s the Primary teacher at Montessori Kids Universe here in Sugar Land. “We are so excited about the extensive Montessori experience Michelle brings to our school,” says Dr. Deurlein. “Not only is she the Primary teacher, she will help train and mentor our other teachers in the Montessori way of teaching. We have our very own Montessori training facility right here in house. That’s a huge benefit to our families!” In addition to the invaluable years of Montessori experience

ASK MARGIE
The Lawyer Who Cares THIS MONTH’S TOPIC:
Protecting the People and Possessions for Which You are Most Thankful
“I
by Amy Sharp
’ve witnessed the nightmare left behind by family members who had nothing set up to deal with their business after their deaths,” says local RE/MAX Realtor Jeanne Gregory. “And after having to make some hard decisions over the care of an elderly loved one, my husband Dennis and I realized how important it was to be able to communicate final wishes to our family when it comes to medical treatment and end of life decisions.” Jeanne and Dennis turned to Fort Bend attorney Margie Connolly for help. “Margie advised us of new tax exemptions that could adversely affect us if our old wills were left in place. Then she assisted us in updating our wills, powers of attorney and medical directives. Margie is very to the point. She asked pertinent questions and made recommendations that would save us money, not only in her fees, but in probate. She also helped us setup the new transfer on death deeds on our properties, which will seamlessly transfer our real estate should one of us die. We set up executors of our estate and Margie gave us valuable advice as to where to keep papers. So many people think their wills
should be in a safe deposit box...but I know from experience that you just can’t go open someone’s safe deposit box after they die.” “Margie is very efficient and knows her stuff,” continues Jeanne. “It’s why I highly recommend her to my clients. As a realtor for over 30 years, I’ve seen many folks try to sell a piece of property, only to find a probate issue. I’ve seen families torn apart fighting over land and homes because the deceased had no will. Everyone needs a will. It’s a valuable piece in your personal financial plan and you owe it to your kids to have your affairs in order. I feel totally confident referring Margie to my friends, family and clients. She can help you address something that maybe isn’t that much fun, but you will feel much better after all the plans are in place!”

d Gojara spent 12 years remodeling his previous home—one room at a time, using many different contractors. “My biggest frustration was lack of reliability,” says Ed. “Including not keeping their word, not showing up at the time given, and not coming close to the quoted timeframe.” Today, Ed’s frustrations are gone thanks to Lone Star Floors. “I actually found them by accident,” says Ed. “We had another contractor lay a wood floor for us, and it was very expensive. When we decided to extend that floor to another part of the house, I found a trades guy to do it for me...all I had to do was find the wood. Lone Star Floors was one of the companies that had the best prices on the wood...and one of the owners, Ziad Mukhaimer, asked if they could also bid on the installation. To my surprise, their turnkey bid was extremely reasonable.” Lone Star Floors gave Ed an estimate of two weeks. “I’d heard that before,” says Ed. But Ed was shocked when his floors were finished ahead of schedule. “Out of a dozen or so contractors, that was a first.” However, once installed, areas in the floor sounded hollow. “I called Ziad and explained. We couldn’t figure it out, but Ziad insisted that if I was not happy they would fix it. They started to tear up the floor, and chunks of concrete came up. Another Mohamed Mark Lone Star owner correctly Ziad Sam identified that there was a mud bed under my floor... there actually wasn’t a problem. What impressed me through the entire ordeal was they never argued with me. They did everything they could to make sure I was happy.” “Maybe I’ve just had the worst luck, but what I experienced at Lone Star

Houston Area is
Top 10
...For Rodents!
I
by Marie Page n the most recent American Housing Survey, the Greater Houston Area ranked 4th highest in rat infestation, 9th highest in cockroaches, and 10th overall in evidence of unspecified rodents. John Onofrey, owner of local Top 2 Bottom Inspections and BUGCO Pest Control, was not at all surprised. “We see evidence of both insects and rodents in a large majority of the homes we inspect,” says John. “You don’t have to see a mouse or a rat to know they’re there...they leave their evidence in droppings, attic trails and urine trails. They’re attracted to the warm, cozy shelter we’ve created for our families, and the easy-to-find-food and moisture that we often unknowingly offer them.” In general, rodents are dangerous because they carry and transmit disease to humans. They spread disease through their feces and body fluids as they scamper through your home foraging for food. And they also carry bacteria on their feet and legs. “They
pick up bacteria while touring the dumpsters and trash cans in your neighborhood,” says John. “Then they deposit this bacteria wherever they step...like in your kitchen and pantry.” Yuck! So what can you do? John says, “Rodents can fit in spaces as small as a penny, and exclusion and tidiness are your first line of defense.” Exclusion includes: •S ealing cracks and holes where utilities and pipes enter your home. • Replacing weather stripping around doors and windows. • Repairing screens on doors, soffits and windows. • Storing food in airtight containers • Taking out the garbage regularly. “If vermin evidence is present in your house,” continues John, “we can set out bait stations and traps to not only eliminate the rodents inside your home,
but also to help in reducing the outside population.” John started the inspection business in 2003, inspecting properties all over Fort Bend and Harris County. With the rampant pest and rodent problems in the area, a lot of customers were requesting pest control too. In 2007, John launched BUGCO with long-time friend Chris Millward. John says, “Chris had years of experience in pest and rodent control with a national company...so it was a great fit. For both residential and commercial customers, we offer inspections and treatment for termites and other pests, mosquito misting, and rodent control and exclusion.” Grossed out by even the possibility of rodents? Give John a call. “We always inspect and verify you actually have a pest problem before we take any action,” says John. “And we’ll always recommend the appropriate treatment at a reasonable price. That’s a promise!”

WOMEN WHO HELP EACH OTHER
HELP THE WORLD by Olivia Cane

here is no belief more American than the one that says hard work will lead to success. And there are fewer success stories more inspiring than that of Imelda Mahoney of Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services. Imelda started with nothing. She wasn’t funded. She wasn’t degreed. And she had two kids to raise. But Imelda was abundantly rich in the one thing that could help her: friends who were just as hardworking and loyal as she was. Those friends helped her build a business that is now two generations strong...and growing! Imelda’s daughter, Casandra, was little when her mom started cleaning house for a client who lived far across town. “His name was Mr. House. Most of the money she made from that job went to gas and babysitting,” Casandra remembers. “But Mr. House loved the work she did. He was so pleased, he referred her to other clients who then referred her to more clients. Pretty soon, my mom needed extra ladies to help her, so of course she asked the other moms who lived on our street.” “My brother and I helped, too,” continues Casandra. “His job was to wipe down doors and mine was to polish door knobs. We were just kids. We loved feeling included. But the moms sometimes needed a
place to leave their kids so they could work. A terrific neighbor of ours pitched in and watched all the kids. It was wonderful! We were truly a team of women working together and helping each other. We had each other’s backs. And because my mom was smart and offered the kind of flexible hours moms need, her employees provided the exceptional service that clients want.” Through hard work and dedication to service, Imelda was able to put her children through school. U of H graduate Casandra went on to work with families of special needs children at Easter Seals. And when she had a daughter of her own, Casandra decided to go back to work with her mom. “Happy people do great work, which is one of the reasons why all the ‘extras’ you pay for with other services—like ceiling fans, blinds, and baseboards—are part of our standard package,” says Casandra. “We never turn down a cleaning project. Really! We’re here to help, so all you have to do is ask. Our company is fully bonded and insured and our work is guaranteed. I couldn’t be any prouder of my mom and all of our amazing ladies. Call us and we will make your house spotless!”

20 MINUTES PER WORKOUT
1-2X PER WEEK
Maximum Results in Minimum Time...No Sweat!

T
he reasons people don’t exercise are countless. They don’t have time, don’t like sweating, don’t like gyms, don’t know what to do, hate the drudgery, don’t like the subliminal pressure of fitness crowds, maybe they’ve been injured by exercising before, maybe they have minor or even major medical issues. What if you could push all of these obstacles to the side...build the strength you need to be healthy and active all in just 20 minutes, two times a week—free of sweat—wearing the clothes you’re wearing right now? Sound unbelievable? That’s exactly what Ken Roche, a fitness enthusiast who retired from Shell after 35 years thought. “I was looking for something in retirement that could really make a difference for people. I discovered SuperSlow Zone and it was too good to be true. After talking with the CEO, I drove up to College Station to visit their location. I was amazed. I didn’t sweat at all, but could feel the effect on my muscles. It worked.” The SuperSlow Zone® exercise protocol was developed in 1982 during a $3.2 million Osteoporosis study at the University of Florida School of Medicine. The protocol is based on–fatiguing muscle groups to momentary failure, and done slowly to avoid the joint forces that occur with traditional strength exercises. Having qualified professional instruction is very important to be effective and safe. That’s why SSZ is accredited by the IACET, the same group that certifies GE Healthcare, The American Physical Therapy Association, and similar prestigious organizations. “When done correctly, you only need to do this twice a week and we track your results with proprietary technology,” says Ken. All sessions are one-on-one with a certified instructor in a quiet, elegant studio equipped with medical-grade equipment. Ken’s wife and co-owner Sheryl is sold as well. Sheryl ran track and played basketball at Texas A&M. She has spent a lifetime training. “I almost feel like it’s cheating!” says Sheryl. “I think about all the hours I put in training, yet this produces so much of the same result. If you don’t enjoy exercise or just don’t have the time, this is perfect. You can fit it to your schedule...because you can wear regular clothes and you won’t need a shower after. Perfect for people with health challenges, business professionals, busy moms, retired people...anybody that wants evidence-based results and to get the exercise done so they can move on with the rest of their day.” Nurse Practitioner Janine Sherman of Southwest Ob/Gyn is one of those people. “Before I found SuperSlow Zone, I was doing cardio exercise, but no weight training. I didn’t feel
like I had time for it. That was several months ago. Today, I feel stronger, healthier, and I’m a lot less stiff when I get of bed in the morning. Strength training gets more and more important as we get older, and SSZ is a great way to add it into your regimen...even if you legitimately feel you do not have the time. It’s quick, it’s convenient, and it works!” “We would love to give you a free consultation and walk you through a sample workout,” says Ken. Set up a consultation today!

with a Beautiful Outcome! by Amy Sharp hen John Britton wanted to remodel the bathroom in his Grants Lake townhome, he considered replacing everything. “There was a lot of yellowy cultured marble that probably looked great in 1990 when it was new,” says John. “But the thought of replacing everything and what that involved made my life flash before my eyes. I thought ripping out most of the bathroom and taking it down the narrow staircase would surely kill me.” John met local Miracle Method owners Jonee and Paul Barnett at a Home and Garden Show at Stafford Centre. There he looked at samples and learned about how the Miracle Method process refinishes surfaces in place. “I was interested,” says John. “And I started to followed their business. I researched the method and tore out several magazine articles about both the process and success stories. It all started to make sense. I liked what I had in the bathroom...it just needed to be refreshed and updated. Once I realized that, it became no question that Miracle Method was the way to go!” John’s garden tub and tile surround were refinished to a gleaming porcelain white. The cultured marble counter with shelf was refinished in black, and the sink refinished in the same porcelain white. John says, “Paul recommended we step the black finish down into the sink one inch, so that it looks like an undermount sink. It turned out fantastic.” John’s bathroom remodel was completed with the installation of a new shower enclosure and grab bar, and refinishing the face of his cabinets to white. “I’m very excited to have the opportunity to spread the good news about Paul and Jonee and their business,” continues John. “When I set out to remodel the bathroom, I was all about ease and outcome. Miracle Method was the perfect option. Today, everything looks brand new and I did not have to deal with the mess of replacing. Plus, my new surfaces are a breeze to keep clean! It was a great experience, it’s a good company, and they’re good people. Everyone I interacted with—including the two gentlemen sent to my home to do the work—was very professional and easy to work with. Terrific, polite and kind...just top notch folks. And they left nothing for me to clean up, they took care of everything. I recommend Miracle Method without question. Even if
