nly 11% of people diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer survive. “Fifty percent of these patients had no symptoms,” says Gastroenterologist, Dr. Nizar Charafeddine. “So when we find the cancer, it’s in advanced stages. It’s the second leading cause of death by cancer in the US (behind lung cancer). This is not an ‘old man’s disease,’ and women and men are affected equally. Yet, it’s 90-95% preventable.” So passionate about prevention, Dr. Charafeddine has partnered with the Rose B. Johnson Foundation to spread awareness.
This is personal.
Rose knows about colon cancer. She is one of the rare survivors. As recommended, Rose did her first colonoscopy at age 50. Rose says, “The doctor found polyps and removed them. He recommended I return in five years. But I didn’t like the drink (a bowel-clearing solution that’s part of colonoscopy prep), so I didn’t return. Ten years later something was protruding from my naval. My polyps had grown back, multiplied, and I had stage IV colon cancer with a prognosis of six months to a year to live. It had metastasized to my liver, lungs and ovaries. I was not a candidate for surgery. I was terminal. Hearing you have cancer is the worst thing in the world. I needed to make a will. I needed to tell my neighbor I didn’t hate her. My daughter had passed away, and I was caring for my grandchildren...what would become of them? Let my heartbreak be your wake-up call.” But after seven years, many treatments and two recurrences, Rose beat her unimaginable odds. “I was lucky... but I wish that battle on no one. Chemotherapy is terrible. I thought of throwing in the towel many times. But the alternative was death. All because I didn’t want the dreaded drink. I want my story of skipping a colonoscopy to scare you to death.” Even with the dismal colon cancer prognosis and the high success rate of early screening, about 60% of our population is skipping recommended colonoscopies. Dr. Charafeddine says, “Like Rose, many people don’t like the drink. But they’re getting better, and today we have many options. Others are afraid of being put to sleep or the very minor risks involved. As Rose attests, none of these compare to hearing, ‘You have colon cancer.’ A normal procedure takes 30 minutes. If we find precancerous polyps, we remove them immediately. Afterward you’re able to eat lunch and get on with your day.” The majority of health insurance policies pay colonoscopies at 100%. For the uninsured and underinsured, Dr. Charafeddine and the Rose B. Johnson Foundation are here to help. Candidates receive an initial office visit with Dr. Charafeddine, “the drink,” the colonoscopy, and any required follow-up and labs. Rose has accompanied her patients to every colonoscopy performed through her foundation. Rose says, “It’s unacceptable for us to lose our loved ones because of lack of knowledge or a financial barrier. I met Dr. Charafeddine at a health fair and what a blessing he has been. He is my partner in saving lives. I don’t know if I could find another doctor that would do what Dr. Charafeddine does.” Rose B. Varicose Veins Facts! On January 26, 2017, Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic hosted a vein seminar. Clinic physician Dr. Ulises Baltazar, who is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery with special certification in Vascular Surgery, summarized the following key points from that seminar. Dr. Baltazar says, “This is important information that I feel the public should know. All information is based on scientific papers from reputable journals that I’ve referenced on our website (www.slveins.com).”

2. Symptoms (article 3) a. Lower leg heaviness, aching, tightness, itching, skin irritation, muscle cramps, tingling and visible varicose veins are present in mild venous insufficiency. Edema, skin color change and ulcers are present in more advanced states. There are other diseases that also can cause these symptoms, including osteoarthritis, sciatica, osteomyelitis, tendonitis, ligamentous injuries, arthritis, peripheral neuropathy, and arterial insufficiency.
Tre a tm en t
3. Tests (articles 4,5,6) a. Ultrasound for venous reflux is the first line of diagnosis. A full study is lengthy--one to two hours—and assesses the superficial and deep system’s valve function. b. If the ultrasound results reveals further problems or is inconclusive, a venogram is a more advanced study.

1. Predisposition (articles 1,2) a. Age and gender: Females are more likely to have venous insufficiency (42%) than males (18%). The older you are, the more likely to suffer this condition. At 40 years old, 22% will have it and at 60 years old 41%. b. Pregnancy: While 22% of women with no pregnancies have varicose veins, women with more than four pregnancies have a 41% chance of developing varicose veins. c. Heredity: 25-62% of patients have one parent with varicose veins, while 90% have history of varices in both parents. d. Obesity: Patients with BMI> 30 are more likely to develop venous insufficiency. e. Lifestyle: Patients that stand long periods of time have a 36% chance of developing varices over the 27% that sit for extended periods of time. f. 25% of patients with history of blood clots can develop venous insufficiency.
4. Treatment (articles 7,8,9) a. Compression stockings: They force the blood to return to your heart against gravity, therefore slowing the development of new varicose veins. b. Venous ablation or closure: This can be done with laser or radiofrequency energy. Closing the vein will avoid blood from refluxing into the leg and distending your veins. It is a highly effective office based procedure with local anesthesia. c. Vein stripping: The superficial vein is surgically removed. This is done in a hospital setting with general anesthesia.
Venous insufficiency is a chronic, recurrent disease. There is no definite treatment for it, and regardless of intervention, the patient needs to “maintain” or “care” for the outcome by wearing compression stockings. There is no “silver bullet or magic wand!” The idea that after any of the treatments, compression stockings are not needed is a MYTH. If you feel your veins are incompetent, your doctor needs to assess you as a whole--not just your veins--and recommend the appropriate treatment.

ighteen year old Skylar Devers was born with a hump in her nose. “When I was as little as eight, I told my mom I wanted a nose job,” says Skylar. “Except I thought that meant getting a new nose, new skin, new everything. And I didn’t want to lose my freckles, so I pushed that idea away. I hated my profile. I spent a lot of time not turning my head...the hump wasn’t that noticeable from the front. But when I knew someone was looking at me from the side, I became very self-conscious.” When Skylar turned eighteen, her mom asked if she wanted to explore her options for the hump in her nose. They scheduled consultations with two area plastic surgeons. The first was Dr. Eric Humble at Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery. “Both my mom and dad accompanied me to the consult,” says Skylar. “And it went very well. Dr. Humble said he could take down the hump and adjust my nose to be more proportionate. He spent a lot of time talking to both me and my parents about the reasons for wanting the procedure. This was right before Christmas break, and I still had one semester left in my senior year. Dr. Humble’s recommendation was I wait till summer, right before leaving for college. But my friends were all aware that I wanted this, and I didn’t see going back to school looking
different as an issue. Together with my parents, we decided to do the procedure over the break...and we cancelled the consultation with the other surgeon. We knew we wanted Dr. Humble to do the procedure.” “I went in late morning—after my last final—and was out by four o’clock,” continues Skylar. “It didn’t take long at all! And my recovery was quick. I had minimal bruising...I actually went to a Christmas party just a few days later. I found I didn’t need the pain medication given just in case.” And Skylar’s “new” nose? “It’s great! My friends and I are impressed with how natural it looks. It just looks like the nose that belongs on my face. It’s exactly what I wanted...smaller and straighter. I’m so much more confident now about my profile. I’m no longer afraid to turn my head and look around. I’m so happy!” Personal Transformation. That’s the mission at Sugar Land Face & Body. “As a plastic surgeon, my reward begins with my goal of bringing out my patients’ love of life,” says Dr. Humble. “The hump in Skylar’s nose was affecting her self-confidence. I’m excited about her transformation through rhinoplasty and wish her all the luck in the world as she moves on to her next chapter at the University of Alabama!”

Did you know that of cancers affecting both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer? But this is one cancer you can prevent. Screening tests help find polyps so they can be removed before they turn into cancer.

Cleaning the Pipes W
hen Jennifer Burkhalter of Alan’s Plumbing felt a nagging pain and something fluttering in her abdomen, she ignored the symptoms. “I thought it was my lady parts,” says Jennifer. “I was 47 and thought maybe it was menopause, so I did nothing. I couldn’t imagine it was a health issue. I was working out, eating healthy, and in the best shape of my life.” “When I finally alerted my OB/GYN after two years, she told me it wasn’t
my ovaries. She told me I needed to get a colonoscopy. But it was close to Christmas, and I could not get an appointment. Christmas Day, I had total blockage. My tumor had blocked everything. I was in the ER and learned I had Stage IV colon cancer. My colon was resectioned, some lymph nodes removed, and I did a year of chemotherapy.” Today, six years later, Jennifer is cancer free. But she was one of the lucky
ones. Many individuals with colon cancer experience no symptoms, and often the cancer has metastasized to other organs before it’s discovered. Colon cancer is the second leading cause of death by cancer in the US (behind lung cancer), but experts believe it’s 90-95% preventable with recommended colonoscopies starting at age 50. Colonoscopy may be performed earlier in people at increased risk. And if you have an unexplained symptom as Jennifer did, don’t ignore it. Any time you experience any stomach discomfort, bleeding in your stool, or sudden weight loss, call your doctor. Now, following doctor’s orders, Jennifer gets colonoscopies every two years. She feels colonoscopies get a bad rap...it’s really not a bad process. “It cleans you out, and afterward you feel so much better and very well rested. A lot of people say they don’t like the colon cleansing drink. My secret is to do it over several hours, and chew spearmint gum or suck on strong candy while you drink it...so it doesn’t taste so much like salt. The truth is, I love my colonoscopies. I feel amazing after they are done.” As fate would have it, Jennifer and her family are experts at cleaning pipes. At their family-owned business, Alan’s Plumbing, Jennifer’s husband Alan is a master licensed plumber. Alan’s brother Chris and the couple’s sons Luke and Beau plus Jeff Johnson are journeyman licensed plumbers, and Alan and Jennifer’s other son Jake and apprentices Jaime and Trevor are working toward their journeymen license. Want to speak to Jennifer? She answers the Alan’s Plumbing phones. Whether you’ve got a leak, a clogged pipe, need a hot water heater replaced, or a toilet reset, just give her a call. And if it’s time...schedule your colonoscopy and clean your pipes. It could save your life.

ur January temperatures were concrete evidence of the crazy fluctuations we are subject to here in the Fort Bend County area. One minute you’re dialing the thermostat up... the next minute, you’re dialing it down. Way down. And that can happen over the course of one afternoon! So how do you know when the imminent hot weather has finally planted its flag and plans on sticking around for a while? 1. When you’re standing motionless but still perspiring. 2. When you get in your car and rush to simultaneously open the windows and blast the air conditioner. 3. When you start ordering the iced coffees at Starbucks. The question you need to ask yourself is this: Is your air conditioner really ready for summer? Will it be able to handle brutally high temperatures and suffocating humidity? Brian Jackson of Jackson Air and Heat, who has been servicing area neighborhoods
since 1982, would like to help you with that. He’s Sugar Land’s oldest independent Trane dealer. And Trane air conditioners with highefficiency XV20i Variable Speed TruComfort technology? udy Bridges, MA, LCDC is a licensed chemical dependency counselor who works for the Star of Hope Mission in their alcoholic and drug addiction treatment program. She has been a licensed chemical dependency counselor for over twenty years and has led a very active life. She is a great-grandmother who has worked overseas for eight years, spending part of that time as a grief counselor for our troops. Over the past two years, Judy went from being a world traveler who jumped out of helicopters, to someone who was in so much pain she had difficulty breathing, and could barely climb a flight of stairs or bend over to pick up one of her great-grandchildren. Judy has been dealing with back pain so severe that traditional pain medicine offered minimal, shortterm relief. As a counselor specializing in alcoholism and drug dependency, she was afraid of the longterm effects narcotics would have on her body. Her daughter and son-in-law had both seen Dr. Steve Harris of Sugar Land Health Center and really sang his praises, so Judy made her first appointment. She says, “It was just a great experience, beginning with the warm reception by the front desk and concluding with my consultation with Dr. Harris. What impressed me the most was that Dr. Harris took the time to explain everything. He is all about information and education.” Dr. Steve Harris has been practicing chiropractic for over forty years. He is active in his church, Sugar Land Rotary Club and the community. He is known for incorporating new technology with a safe and holistic approach. The information and education that Judy appreciates is all a part of the high level of personalized service that Dr. Harris delivers. After seeing Dr. Harris for two weeks, Judy felt so much better that she was able to climb stairs again and she no longer needed
her pain medicine. Through the course of her treatment, Dr. Harris taught her breathing and movement exercises. Judy says, “It’s just great to have my life back. I have seen bone specialists in the past, but no one ever told me what to do. I was happy with my results early on, but Dr. Harris assured me that I could have even better results—and he was right. Dr. Harris really comes from the heart; everything was so easy and real.”

his year, our very own MedCare Pediatric Group is proud to be the presenting sponsor for the Texas Miss Amazing Pageant, held right here in Fort Bend County the last weekend of April. Miss Amazing started in Nebraska in 2007 as a pageant premise for females with disabilities. Today, Miss Amazing Pageants are held in more than 30 states. It’s a movement created by a collective desire to acknowledge the beauty and value within all people. Like the very first event back in 2007, the Miss Amazing Pageants remain dedicated to teaching life skills through an interview, introduction, evening wear, and talent showcase. Texas Miss Amazing co-director Laura Bueno says, “This is our third year to host a pageant in Texas. When you see these ladies on stage, your jaw just drops at how awesome they are. Their confidence really shines through. One of my favorites is the optional talent showcase. We’ve had girls sing, dance, play violin. It’s truly amazing.” Girls and women ages five and older who have an IEP, IPP, 504 plan, SSI or a physician’s document proving disability are eligible to participate in Miss Amazing. The only cost is five canned goods that benefit others in need in our local community. This year, in addition to being the presenting sponsor, MedCare also has several patients participating in the pageant.

Deonc Bradley and Natalia Zamarripa are two of those lucky ladies. Known for her love of fashion, Deonc had this say about the pageant, “I love getting dressed up in my pretty dress and seeing my new friends.” Natalia’s family can’t wait for their daughter’s big day. “We are very happy and proud that our little girl is able to participate in a pageant of this type. It is a further achievement in the goals that we have for her. We know she will excel and stand out, and we will be there to support her.” Many girls like Deonc and Natalia will step into the stoplight at this year’s Miss Amazing. All of them will receive crowns and flowers and feel extra special. One lady from each division will represent Texas at the Miss Amazing National Showcase. How can you help? The Texas Miss Amazing Pageant has volunteer opportunities, sponsorship opportunities and committee positions available. “We will also need plenty of volunteer hands on deck the day of the event.” says Laura. “And after the big day, our queens are available for events. We’ve had the girls out to nursing homes for Grandparent’s Day, where they did arts and crafts and sang for the residents. We love to get our queens out in the community, so if you know of an opportunity, we would love to hear about it!”

teve Jobs, the late entrepreneur, inventor and co-founder of Apple, once said, “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.” It’s a philosophy brothers Brian and Dr. Shannon Orsak take to heart. Back in 2007, they had an idea. Create a place in their hometown where their neighbors could seek quality emergency medical care. A comfortable place where patrons would feel loved and didn’t have to wait hours to see a doctor. The brothers may not have realized it at the time, but they were pioneers of the now common free-standing ER. Today, they are celebrating 10 years of service to our community. And like
Steve Jobs, they believe in what they do. “We are not owned by a big corporation or venture capitalists,” says cofounder and CFO Brian. “We live here, work here and our kids go to school here. We care about this community.” From seeing Dr. Shannon Orsak on “Health Matters” on KPRC Local Channel 2, to sponsoring community events, schools and youth sports, the St. Michael’s community presence is strong. “We are always out and about,” adds Dr. Orsak. “When you run a business in your own community, you really have a vested interest in service and attention to detail. Ten years later, and we still stand firm on these very same principles. We’re here for you and we’re here because of you. How else would we have made it a whole decade?”

ob and Kathy Brown built their home in 1995. “It had served us well, through two boys and several dogs,” says Kathy. “But when Rob started to have health issues, we looked at downsizing. We quickly decided that was not for us. But this house needed help. The tile floor was starting to popup, and not much had been changed since 1995.” “I consulted with my interior designer, Mary, at The Design Firm. We came up with a plan to redo the bottom floor.” To

execute that plan, Rob and Kathy interviewed three contractors, including Teri Gilberg (better known as ‘The Re-Modelista’). “We ultimately chose Teri. That was the single best decision we made.” The Brown’s first floor remodel included flooring throughout, remodeling the powder and laundry rooms, and gutting and redesigning the kitchen to make it more accessible. “We had made the choice to stay in the house, and it needed to accommodate us getting older. The new kitchen design allows space for a wheelchair or walker to get around, should we ever need it.” The three—Kathy, Teri and interior designer Mary—worked together to evolve the design. “We removed some things that we found were too pricey to construct,” says Kathy. “When it was time to pick out cabinets, Teri brought samples over and we chose. We had a good idea of what granite we wanted, and Teri sent me to the granite yard she knew would have it. Mary and Teri worked extremely well together to produce a finished product we would like within our budget.” “Throughout the process, we had three or four workers at our home everyday. Every one of them was personable and affable. They did their work and they did it well. We had no trust issues. I would say the crew went above and beyond, actually. Rob was undergoing chemotherapy every three weeks at the time, and they were conscientious about dust and cleanliness. They blocked off areas with heavy plastic that were clean and quiet where Rob could rest. They changed our A/C filter every week. They just took the worry away for us. Teri checked in often and answered our texts and calls immediately. In the end, her time estimate was spot on.” “Now when we walk into our home, we still can’t believe it. It’s phenomenal. It’s our home. A place we can live, put our feet up and have a dog. We love it. For me, 2017 is the year of a new bottom floor and a healthy husband. Thank you Teri!”

ebruary 14th marks a celebration of love and romance for millions of people around the world. Do you have plans? Or do you find going out on Valentine’s to be a hassle? It’s been said that home is where the heart is, so why not forego the crowds and prex fixe menus and spend the holiday celebrating at home. But one problem...there isn’t much romantic about your dated kitchen! Jonee and Paul Barnett, owners of our local Miracle Method Surface Refinishing, know a thing or two about love...they’ve been married for more than 30 years. And that kitchen? With Paul and Jonee’s help it can be “new” before Valentine’s Day! Jonee says, “Miracle Method can completely transform your counters and backsplash, making them beautiful again and bringing them into this century. We can transform porcelain, ceramic, laminate, acrylic, or cultured marble surfaces. You’ll love cooking that special Valentine’s dinner with your loved one in a beautiful kitchen. Even more...you’ll adore the price tag of our Miracle Method!” Some memories you want to keep forever, like the first time you met your spouse or your first Valentine’s Day together. Other memories––like the time you dropped a mug and nicked your countertop or the time someone set a hot pan down and left a discolored ring––are better left forgotten. Paul says, “Before we put on our miracle finish, we start with a professional cleaning and surface restoration. This miracle fixes chips, cracks, spots, stains, and lackluster finishes. Grout is completely cleaned, repaired and sealed, so no more cracking and molding. Then our miracle finish is applied. It’s a quick and painless process, because we aren’t replacing your surfaces, just refinishing them in place. Small jobs take only a day, and even big jobs take less than five. We really can give you a new kitchen (and bathrooms too!) by Valentine’s Day. Plus, we offer a warranty to protect your investment...because we know how much you’ll love your ‘new’ kitchen!”

Vino & Vinyl...

hen Vino & Vinyl business owners Paul and Nichole Killingsworth were looking for commercial pest control, they turned to one of their own customers. “We know John Onofrey and his wife Trudy.” says Paul. “They are members of Club Vino (the Vino & Vinyl wine club). We’ve even gone out to the Onofrey’s house and done a wine tasting for them and their friends. So when we heard John owned a pest control company, we inquired about it.” BUGCO Pest Control was opened back in 2007 by John and his friend, Chris Millward. Paul says, “Supporting local is really cool to us. When we source the wine bar, we really like to support the small independents. We have lots of wines from small California producers. We also source as much organic as possible. So when we learned BUGCO
had a ‘green’ option, it was the obvious choice. Small, local, ‘green’ and run by great people...our kind of company.” Family-owned and operated, BUGCO Pest Control has the equipment, experience and knowledge to deal with any pest problem you throw at them. “Chris and I live here with our families,” says John. “And we know what to expect.” The technicians at BUGCO are trained and licensed to complete thorough inspections of your home or commercial property. They specialize in general pest control, termite (WDI) inspections and termite treatments, mosquito misting system installation and maintenance, fire ants, bed bugs, flea and tick treatments and rodent control. “We set the highest standards for the services we provide, and we promise to determine the best course of action for you,” adds John. “We’re always fair and honest, and
we offer complete warranties for our services too. For our commercial customers like Vino & Vinyl, we take great care to be discreet, or when desired we accommodate our commercial customers after closing.” At BUGCO Pest Control, quotes are always free and there are no contracts involved. It’s now been six months since Paul and Nichole first had BUGCO into Vino & Vinyl. “It’s been great. They are extremely reliable and they definitely keep the pests away. Our wine deliveries come in large cardboard boxes and bugs love to hitch a ride in cardboard. We’ve seen a vast improvement with BUGCO’s ‘green’ treatment and their price fits our budget. We’ll be hiring them on at our second location in Sugar Land’s Town Square (opening around Valentine’s Day!). We absolutely recommend them to anyone looking for quality, safe pest control.”

ASK MARGIE
The Lawyer Who Cares THIS MONTH’S TOPIC:
A Local Attorney You Can Trust
W
by Amy Sharp
hen local House of Blooms business owners, mother/daughter duo Pat and Tiffany Houck needed an attorney...they turned to Fort Bend’s own Margie Connolly. “We needed assistance with both personal and business legal matters,” says Tiffany. “And it was extremely important to us that it was someone we could trust and someone that understood the legal system here in Fort Bend County. Margie is that person.” “In each situation,” continues Tiffany, “we met at Margie’s office where Margie explained to us in depth the different avenues and options we had. She was never pushy and really made sure we understood the different rights we were entitled to...so that we could make our own sound decisions. And she is in constant contact. Even when there wasn’t an update on our situation, she always called to follow up. She was on top of it, and that made everything easy and seamless.” The Fort Bend lawyer you can trust...that’s what Tiffany and Pat found in Margie. With many years of legal experience, Margie is also
your neighbor. She gives her time to the Sugar Land Rotary Club, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels, Fort Bend Lawyers Care and Child Advocates of Fort Bend. Margie was recently chosen Sugar Land’s 2016 Rotarian of the Year. “My passion is protecting your family’s future by providing legal services with the highest level of client satisfaction,” says Margie. “I love this community, and that’s in large part due to it’s wonderful members like Tiffany and Pat. I love that I was able to exceed their expectations, and will do everything I can to do the same for you!” “We absolutely recommend Margie for both personal and business legal matters,” add Tiffany and Pat. “She’s trustworthy and she’s our friend.”

A Preschool Your Child (and You!) Will Love
by Amy Sharp

hen Megan Boler decided to return to teaching full-time, she needed a place for two-year-old Matthew. “Back in July, I saw an ad for Montessori Kids Universe on Facebook, and I was interested.” Unfortunately, MKU was not yet open when Megan started work, and she enrolled Matthew at another school. Matthew’s an easy going kid. So when she had to peel him off her every day at drop off, Megan knew he wasn’t at the right place. “When MKU opened, we were there. Matthew was the first student on the first day and it was the best decision we made.” So what’s different? “Most importantly,” says Megan, “Matthew absolutely LOVES it. He’s excited to go every day. The staff is incredibly professional, loving, knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. And this is a school, not a daycare. In addition to a record of what he eats and diaper changes, I get feedback every single day on his activities and how he’s improving.” And did you know MKU has organic, hot meals freshly made and delivered daily? “The food is amazing!” says Megan. “Matthew is eating a really healthy diet. He’s eating all sorts of vegetables he doesn’t eat at home and he likes it!” MKU also caters to all dietary restrictions. Montessori Kids Universe operates year round and offers a full summer program. “Our summer is a prescribed curriculum that opens opportunities for our kids to learn in really fun ways!” says Head of School Dr. Rebecca Deurlein. Enrollment is currently open for both the year-round program and summer (ages three months to six years welcome). Megan adds, “Matthew will definitely attend MKU through kindergarten. My husband and I are so grateful to have found a place Matthew loves!”

A Dentist’s Secret to Saving Your Marriage by Sarah Warburton
W
hen local psychologist Dr. Gary Petty first met Dr. Thomas Lomonte, he had no idea his new neighbor would be a miracle-worker for his marriage! Dr. Petty says, “Dr. Lomonte and I live right next to each other on the weekends out on Tiki Island, Galveston. He’s a really good neighbor and fishing buddy, a truly nice guy, and a great dentist! Although I live and work in Houston, I drove out to Stafford to see Dr. Lomonte for my Snore Guard®.” If you’ve tried to stifle snoring with sleeping pills, earplugs and nose strips, you’ve been tackling the surface problem...the noise. But snoring’s more than a noise problem...it’s a health problem, too! Snoring impacts the quality of your sleep, which can lead to headaches, concentration problems, hypertension, depression, and cardiac disease. And it doesn’t take a highly-trained psychologist like Dr. Petty to know that fatigue makes couples irritable, impatient, distracted, and pessimistic. Putting an end to snoring improves your health...and your relationship! If you’ve been sleeping on the couch or in the study because your snoring got you banned from the bedroom...take heart. Dr. Lomonte says, “The FDA-approved prescription Snore Guard® features Air Flow Technology™ to prevent your jaw and tongue from dropping back
into the throat...the root cause of snoring. The intra-oral device, Snore Guard®, has been proven up to 99% effective in the treatment of snoring and it’s FDA cleared for the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea!” Dr. Petty says, “Sometimes I’d even wake up in the morning with a sore throat from snoring so much. Dr. Lomonte fit me with a custom Snore Guard® and it stopped my snoring immediately! The first night I wore it, the snoring stopped. I’ve also always been someone who grinds his teeth at night. I tried several different night-guards from other SNORE dentists. I’d chomp on NO MORE them all night long, but they didn’t stop my snoring. The Snore Guard® stopped my snoring and I’m not grinding my teeth either! I’m really happy with the results... and my wife says it’s a miracle. I’ve never seen her so happy!” “I completely recommend both Dr. Lomonte and the Snore Guard®...and so does my wife!”

20 MINUTES PER WORKOUT
1-2X PER WEEK
Maximum Results in Minimum Time...No Sweat!
by Amy Sharp
T
he reasons people don’t exercise are countless. They don’t have time, don’t like sweating, don’t like gyms, don’t know what to do, hate the drudgery, don’t like the subliminal pressure of fitness crowds, maybe they’ve been injured by exercising before, maybe they have minor or even major medical issues. What if you could push all of these obstacles to the side...build the strength you need to be healthy and active all in just 20 minutes, two times a week—free of sweat—wearing the clothes you’re wearing right now? Sound unbelievable? That’s exactly what Ken Roche, a fitness enthusiast who retired from Shell after 35 years thought. “I was looking for something in retirement that could really make a difference for people. I discovered SuperSlow Zone and it was too good to be true. After talking with the CEO, I drove up to College Station to visit their location. I was amazed. I didn’t sweat at all, but could feel the effect on my muscles. It worked.” The SuperSlow Zone® exercise protocol was developed in 1982 during a $3.2 million Osteoporosis study at the University of Florida School of Medicine. The protocol is based on–fatiguing muscle groups to momentary failure, and done slowly to avoid the joint forces that occur with traditional strength exercises. Having qualified professional instruction is very important to be effective and safe. That’s why SSZ is accredited by the IACET, the same group that certifies GE Healthcare, The American Physical Therapy Association, and similar prestigious organizations. “When done correctly, you only need to do this twice a week and we track your results with proprietary technology,” says Ken. All sessions are one-on-one with a certified instructor in a quiet, elegant studio equipped with medical-grade equipment. Ken’s wife and co-owner Sheryl is sold as well. Sheryl ran track and played basketball at Texas A&M. She has spent a lifetime training. “I almost feel like it’s cheating!” says Sheryl. “I think about all the hours I put in training, yet this produces so much of the same result. If you don’t enjoy exercise or just don’t have the time, this is perfect. You can fit it to your schedule...because you can wear regular clothes and you won’t need a shower after. Perfect for people with health challenges, business professionals, busy moms, retired people...anybody that wants evidence-based results and to get the exercise done so they can move on with the rest of their day.” Nurse Practitioner Janine Sherman of Southwest Ob/Gyn is one of those people. “Before I found SuperSlow Zone, I was doing cardio exercise, but no weight training. I didn’t feel
like I had time for it. That was several months ago. Today, I feel stronger, healthier, and I’m a lot less stiff when I get of bed in the morning. Strength training gets more and more important as we get older, and SSZ is a great way to add it into your regimen...even if you legitimately feel you do not have the time. It’s quick, it’s convenient, and it works!” “We would love to give you a free consultation and walk you through a sample workout,” says Ken. Set up a consultation today!

Gather Your Team. Will You Get Out?
Feel The Rush.
T
he clock is ticking. Almost an hour ago you and your team walked into a room and, using your power of observation and puzzle solving skills, are close to getting out. The question is: Will you solve the last puzzle before the clock hits zero? An escape room is a real life team-based adventure game! Escape Again “locks” your team inside one of their themed rooms where you are completely immersed in the game. Your challenge is to solve the puzzle, beat the clock and escape...in under 60 minutes. Escape Again is the product of months of work by Tracie Whitacre and David Sebek. “We really wanted to be unique,” says Tracie. “And David and I love the challenge of creating our own stories.” In their endeavor, they’ve enlisted the help of scenic artists in Virginia and a professor of game design in Toronto to consult on story flow. The result is fantastic. Experienced “escape room enthusiasts” laud David and Tracie’s rooms as some of the most unique and best experiences around. Tracie and David met when their kids participated in a first grade problem solving
club together. “We always thought it would be fun to have something like that for adults!” says David. Fast forward 15 years and the two Aggie alums played an escape room in College Station while visiting for Parents Weekend. “Our families loved it,” says Tracie. “We played every room, and David and I thought. ‘We can do this!’” A month later they signed a lease in Sugar Land and in December Escape Again Rooms opened. All of the clues you need are in the room. Escape Again game masters follow your movements on closed circuit cameras, and provide help if needed. Just remember...after four clues you are no longer eligible for the leaderboard. “It really feels like you’re solving a mystery,” says Tracie. “People sometimes ask if our rooms are scary. They’re not. We always tell them the scariest thing in the room is your imagination.” “The coolest part,” continues David, “is that for one hour, people put their phones away and are focused on communicating with each other. They’re playing the game and working together to escape. And the rush lasts far beyond that. Hours later they’re still talking about how they escaped.”
Middle school kids, high school kids and adults enjoy maneuvering the escape rooms. “Many times, adults over think it,” says Tracie. “They come up with the wildest situations...we would be evil if we did what some people come up with. But kids...they get it.” Call ahead and reserve or conveniently book online. Escape Again welcomes couples, friends, birthday parties and corporate groups. Groups of five or six work well, but as few as two or as many as 10 can attempt to escape a room. Want to bring in food? Reserve the spacious lounge and make it a party. One freebie hint from Tracie and David: “Divide and conquer and work with urgency!” Good luck!
