o you have a secret recipe for great chili? Then it’s time to put it all on the line at the 7th Annual Classic Chevy Sugar Land Chili Cook-off. Jerry Parks of Classic Chevy says, “Last year we had over 50 teams participate. This year we are doubling that number to 100! This event will benefit our entire community of law enforcement and fire protection—the Heroes that keep our families safe, sound and protected from the harm and dangers of our times. Honorees and beneficiaries include: The 100 Club, Police and Fire/EMS departments from Sugar Land, Missouri City, Stafford, Richmond, Rosenberg, and Meadows Place, along with the Sheriff and Constable departments of Fort Bend County.”

Not only will our local Heroes benefit in a big way, they’re a huge part of the fun! Jerry says, “Police and Fire/EMS will have their own cook-off competition. As our guest, you will vote on their cooking. Our ‘Goal’ is to raise as much money and goodwill as possible for these Heroes!” Your Heroes (and you!) will also be engaging in four-way tug-of-war contests, arm wrestling, pepper eating and the demolition of a car with sledge hammers. “Once we have the car demolished,” says Jerry, “our fire departments will give a jaws of life demonstration. We’ll also have fire trucks, police cruisers, ambulances and SWAT units on site. This is can not miss fun!” Bring your “Spicy,” “Specialty,” “Texas” or “Bean” secret recipe to the Classic Chevy Sugar Land Chili Cook-off on Saturday

n 2014, Rhonda Varvaro had a CT scan of the abdomen with contrast. “I’d had an ablation the year before. In the results of the scan, a fibroid was noted as well as pelvic congestion. The notes recommended I seek consult on both.” Pelvic congestion syndrome (also known as pelvic vein incompetence) is a chronic medical condition in women caused by varicose veins in the lower abdomen. The condition causes chronic pain, often manifesting as a constant dull ache, which can be aggravated by standing. Rhonda immediately wondered if the pelvic congestion had anything to do with her legs. “I had pain in the ovary area, as well as persistent pain, numbness, tingling and a heavy feeling in my legs. My OB/GYN monitored the fibroid, but when I asked about the pelvic congestion, both he and my PCP glossed over it.” With the pain becoming more unbearable, Rhonda scheduled an appointment with vein specialist, Ulises Baltazar, MD. “Dr. Baltazar had done some vein removal for me in the past. When I told him about the noted pelvic congestion on my CT with contrast scan and the persistent pain in my legs, Dr. Baltazar took it very seriously. The engorged veins in my pelvis were pushing other items in my body around. I was in surgery 20 days later for a coil embolization.” In a coil embolization, tiny coils are dropped into the engorged vein to block the blood flow. This seals off the vein, so another nearby vein can naturally take over the blood supply. Rhonda says, “It took four coils to clog up the vein. It was quite a large mess.” “Dr. Baltazar is just an amazing physician,” continues Rhonda. “First, he really listened to me. He’s very compassionate and has incred-

ible bedside manner. He’s very involved and caring. When he walks in, he knows who you are and what’s going on...he’s on top of it. And he’s a spiritual man. He said a prayer with me before I went into surgery. I’ve never had that before. So far so good on my veins. Doppler ultrasound shows my blood flow is good.” “From what I understand, pelvic congestion syndrome is a very underdiagnosed condition in women,” says Rhonda. “I encourage all women, if you have unexplained pain in the female area and heaviness in the legs, visit a vein doctor like Dr. Baltazar. Follow your gut.” Dr. Baltazar is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery. He has been treating veins for more than ten years, caring for patients throughout Sugar Land and Southwest Houston in a compassionate, respectful environment. Like he did for Rhonda, Dr. Baltazar is dedicated to making every patient feel comfortable and safe, allowing plenty of time for questions. Rhonda says, “I can’t say enough good things about him!”

Really Beautiful Shanie Dodson’s story by Marie Page

S

hanie Dodson has given birth to two children. “I’m also plus-sized,” says Shanie. “My breasts were lopsided, saggy and pointed to the floor. They looked like two sandbags with nothing in them.” With her wedding approaching, Shanie made a spur of the moment decision to get her breasts augmented before her big day. “I wanted to look my best at my wedding. I went online and researched every plastic surgeon in the greater Houston area, paying special attention to pricing and before and after pictures.” Through her research, Shanie narrowed her surgeon choices down to three. She scheduled consultations with all of them on the same day. Her second consultation was with Dr. Eric Humble of Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery. “From the moment I walked in the office, it was a completely different feel from the first doctor I visited that day. Everyone I spoke with was so inviting and I felt very comfortable. When Dr. Humble came in and sat down to talk, it was a very relaxed and level conversation. Never did I feel that he was superior. I made my decision immediately after that conversation. I paid the down payment, scheduled the procedure for his next available time, and cancelled my consultation with the third plastic surgeon.” The day of Shanie’s surgery, her fiance dropped her off 6:30 am. “I needed him to take care of my children. So I was alone, but perfectly comfortable thanks to the staff at Dr. Humble’s office. My sweet nurse took me back and everyone was super friendly. The next thing I knew I was waking up and it was done. Before I left, Dr. Humble made sure I knew I could call or text him at anytime. I loved that he was so attentive to my needs. I actually did text him at one point. My stitches were poking through and I was worried so I sent him a picture. He quickly replied and assured me everything was fine.” And Shanie’s results? “My breasts are better than I ever expected! They are completely even and really beautiful. Not only does Dr. Humble do a fantastic job, he’s very affordable. I’ve already recommended him to friends and family, and my hope is that other plus-sized women will read this and be inspired. We can all be beautiful!”

“We always invest in the newest technology. Technology provides information about our patients and their eyes...and more information is good. The more we have, the more we can target treatment.” Dr. Arnold is one of only four doctors in Texas chosen to fit EyePrint Pro impression-molded contact lenses. “These lenses are a great option for those with an irregular cornea due to keratoconus, corneal transplant, dry eye, LASIK or trauma. Many of these patients were never able to wear contact lenses before...now they can!” Dr. Arnold and Donna, his wife of 41 years, raised their daughter Meredith right here in Sugar Land. He loves literature, writing, science and statistics. After earning a business degree and selling computers, he went back to school to become an eye doctor. Today, he’s been practicing optometry at his same Sugar Land location since 1992! “I grew up very nearsighted,” says Dr. Arnold. “I started wearing glasses at six and contacts at 12. Optometry is interesting science, and I knew I could empathize with my patients. I found attending school after ‘I knew what I wanted to be’ easy. I was motivated to really learn the material...and I wanted to be good at it!” After working for others for a number of years—including positions in research and large ophthalmology groups—Dr. Arnold returned to his native Sugar Land and opened Today’s Vision. There was such a demand for an eye doctor in the area, people were knocking on Dr. Arnold’s door the day before he opened. “I did 10 eye exams in my t-shirt and shorts. I couldn’t say ‘No.’” Twenty-five years later, Dr. Arnold is indeed “good” at what he does. His practice is built on personalized care based on value. He takes time to listen to every patient, and keeps Saturday hours. “My feeling is that I should be here when people want to come. This isn’t just a job. I care about my patients and think about them often...many times sending emails and texts to follow up.” In addition to patient care, technology is integral at Today’s Vision. 6 ~ UPCLOSE ~ March 2017

ulissa Sandoval works full time and attends Houston Community College. There is very little room in her busy schedule for downtime or unplanned activities. When she experienced severe back pain last September, Julissa was worried about how it would affect her job and her studies. The pain started in her lower back and spread down her legs. At one point, the pain in her legs was so bad she could barely stand or walk. Julissa says, “I had a hard time just sitting, I couldn’t sleep and I couldn’t drive.” Anxious to get help right away, she called Dr. Steve Harris of Sugar Land Health Center after reading good reviews about him online. From her first phone call, Julissa says she felt like she was in good hands. “All of the office staff was very friendly and made me feel welcomed. Dr. Harris was just great. He took his time explaining everything and showed me my x-rays.” “I felt a difference after my first treatment. I had very little downtime and I was able to keep up with my studies. Even my family was surprised with my results.” Dr. Harris opened the first chiropractic office in Sugar Land in 1982, and recently celebrated his 40th anniversary in practice. Known for incorporating new technology and techniques that complement his safe and holistic approach; Dr. Harris offers chiropractic care, pain relief, spinal decompression, class IV hot laser and rehabilitation. He is well respected among his colleagues and the community as a philanthropist and humanitarian. When it comes to his patients, he strives to find and treat the underlying causes of their symptoms. When Julissa first visited Dr. Harris, she didn’t know what to expect. She just knew she wanted to get rid of the pain. Working with Dr. Harris allowed her to feel better without using prescription pain medication. She says she’s very grateful for all of the help she received at Sugar Land Health Center. “Dr. Harris and his entire staff were helpful and kind. Apples or Applesauce? Y by Olivia Cane ou can take excellent care of your pearly whites—brushing, flossing, avoiding sugary snacks— and still have what amounts to 18th-century teeth. Unfortunately, everyone is dealt a hand of genetic cards, and a lot of people get left holding the Joker. Are you one of them? When a tooth is lost either by genetics, infection or accident, you have an option you may not have known about: iSy (pronounced “easy”) implants. And Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. of Stafford is one of the few area dentists who offers them. “iSy stands for Intelligent System,” says Dr. Lomonte. “And that’s exactly what they are—implants with all the stability and beauty of real teeth...but for 40% less than the usual implant costs. And the reason why that’s possible is because there are fewer instruments and fewer steps involved. In fact, you can come in over your lunch break to have the procedure done. There is very little discomfort... which is really remarkable in an implant this durable and foolproof.” iSy is a dental implant system of the highest quality, developed in Switzerland and manufactured in Germany. A complete milestone in dental innovation, iSy dental implants come in three workflow treatments: Digital, Conventional and Combined. Both Digital and Conventional treatments can be performed with or without the implant base, and all treatments feature multi-functional caps and a customized final restoration. What does that mean exactly? “It means that iSy dental implants are the next best Come in thing to real teeth—and in some cases, better than a as a patient lot of people’s real teeth,” says Dr. Lomonte. “It means taking your life back in small but significant ways—corn on the and leave cob instead of canned corn. hree years ago, Katrina Hartwell had a big chain maid service cleaning her home. Katrina says, “After awhile, they just stopped cleaning the way we like. There was constantly a new crew at our home, and we just weren’t happy.” Katrina’s husband Chris noticed the Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services car was frequently in the neighborhood, cleaning house for their neighbors. So frustrated with their current service, one day he jotted down their number and gave them a call. Katrina says, “The owner Imelda Mahoney came over for an interview and to provide a quote. In that very first meeting, we were very comfortable. She’s warm, very friendly, and has a nice personality.” Now—nearly three years later—Katrina still feels the same way about Imelda and all of the ladies at Mahoney’s. “They’re just nice all over,” says Katrina. “A warm, friendly attitude and they really care. I’ve gotten to know Imelda’s daughter Casandra as well. We have conversations like family when they come over. Their cleaning is thorough. Plus, items are put back where I want them every time...which wasn’t always my experience in the past. The rare time something does go wrong or something is broken, Imelda makes sure I know what happened and she takes care of it. She is very fair. If someone in my crew calls in

sick or there’s not enough people to clean, I’ve seen Imelda herself fill in to make sure my home gets done. She takes on that responsibility and I really appreciate it.” “I recommend Mahoney’s to anyone looking for quality maid service. A Custom Designed Pool and Patio Renovation by Amy Sharp

hen Mark and Cathy Shisler decided to renovate their pool, he got bids from four different companies. “One was the original pool builder. The other three I chose by polling my neighbors on who they would recommend, and ads I’d seen in different magazines.” One of those bids was from Bratton Pools, the company ultimately chosen to do the work. “The owner, Mike Bratton, did my initial consultation and estimate. I found him really easy to work with and more responsive than the others, who were slow to call back and inconsistent in what they were telling me.” Bratton Pool’s Certified Pool Designer, Maggie Castillo, says, “This renovation was a complete pool makeover including new tile, pebble plaster in the pool, glass bead plaster in the spa, travertine pool edge coping, opening the spa spillway with travertine to make a waterfall, resurfacing the deck with a stamped overlay, and replacing the old pool heater and pump motor. We also improved and added drainage including a red Porous Pave deck area that incorporates a stone the couple found years ago that resembled the state of Oklahoma...the Shisler’s are Sooners fans and of course we were happy to do that! We met a few times at our showroom and I showed them the materials and possibilities. I worked up a design using our 3D software to literally ‘show’ Mark and Cathy exactly what their finished pool would look like.”

Design approved, construction moved forward on the Shisler’s pool. “When you take something existing and renovate it,” says Mark, “issues and challenges inevitably come up. What impressed me about Bratton Pools was that Mike worked with us on every issue. I never felt like I was being nickeled and dimed to death. The pool and new patio came out very, very good. The finished product is excellent. Very attractive. I definitely recommend Bratton Pools to others.” Like the Shisler’s renovation, everything at Bratton Pools is customdesigned for the client’s vision and desire. No two pools built or renovated by Bratton look the same. Maggie says, “Here, design is a step-by-step process. We only want to build something you will love. Our 3D renderings are invaluable in this process. For example, if you’re not sure about what materials you’d like to use, I can show you on the big screen how the different colors and finishes will look in your backyard, including placing your house in background. We work together to make your dreams come true!” Ready to make your dreams come true? hen you go into a shoe store, do you buy a one-size-fits-all pair of shoes or do you buy a pair that fits your feet perfectly? Silly question, right? What happens when the medication is sold only in pill form but they can’t swallow pills? That’s exactly why Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy is the area pharmacy of choice. As a compounding pharmacy, Campbell’s is able to custom blend your medication so it’s exactly what you need in the amount you need it. For those who hate pills, Campbell’s can turn your medication into a topical cream, a chewable, a liquid, or even a lollipop. t. Paddy’s Day is fast approaching and it’s tons of fun to do all things green. Green attire, green beer, even green food. But if your bathroom is still avocado green (or maybe it’s mustard yellow!) that’s out, out, out. If you find yourself green with envy at your friend’s neutral bath, but not able to justify replacing a perfectly good tub or countertop, we have the perfect solution for you: Miracle Method Surface Refinishing. Jonee and Paul Barnett, local owners of Miracle Method Surface Refinishing, say, “You absolutely do not have to throw out a perfectly good bathtub just because you don’t like the color. In fact, a total bathroom remodel is very costly...and the tub and tile end up in a landfill. What we do here at Miracle Method is refinish over the existing tub and tile for significantly less money, and significantly less mess. You can even stay up with the times by choosing a neutral color, a cool and calm color, or our very popular Natural Accents finish that mimics the appearance of natural stone.” Know what’s even better than updating your bathroom at a super low price? Making it beautiful while enjoying outstanding customer service. There’s a reason our local Miracle Method has received the Angie’s List Super Service Award and is a BBB accredited business with an A+ rating. It’s the promise of Paul and Jonee. “Jonee and I founded our business on the good old-fashioned values of honesty and integrity,” says Paul. “At our showroom, we’d love to show you the quality of our craftsmanship on our refinished bathtubs, sinks, counters and tile. A STRONGER LIFE IS A LONGER LIFE by Olivia Cane

“M

ost people walk into a gym with weight loss goals...which isn’t a bad thing,” says Veronica Malhiot, co-owner of Koko FitClub. “But there’s a lot of confusing information out there about how to lose weight and keep it off. All too often, we let our unrealistic expectations prevent us from realizing our dreams. Instead of adopting a healthy lifestyle along with sensible exercise, we go on crazy diets, shun carbs or calorie restrict to the point where our bodies have no choice but to hang on to fat. That’s not the way to do it!” Fortunately, we have help from a team of real experts. March is National Nutrition Month, which is an education campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Veronica says, “This year’s theme is ‘Put Your Best Fork Forward.’ That means making just small shifts in food choices can add up over time. hen Cathy and Johnnie Suggs decided to remodel their kitchen, one of the quotes they received was from Sam at Lone Star Floors. “I really liked what he presented,” says Cathy. “But I wanted to see how they did, so I decided to go with a small job first. I had them do my bathroom cabinets and they did a great job. I was very pleased, so I contacted them to move forward on my kitchen remodel.” In Cathy’s kitchen, she wanted a new stovetop in her island, the island utility sink removed, and all of the cabinets and counters replaced. However, she was keeping her floors. “It was very important that the new stuff blend with my floors. Sam was very helpful. When I showed him the granite I had in mind, he sent me to a place where I could select the slab, rather than trying to decide based on the little squares. On the day they came to install the backsplash, I still wasn’t sure if it was what I wanted, so I called Sam. Within 30 minutes, he was at my house with more samples. I ended up going with the original choice, but I really appreciated Sam’s opinion. Ultimately, the backsplash tied everything together and it looks great! I also wanted drawers instead of shelves inside my cabinets, and Sam’s input on that was invaluable.” On the first day of construction, Cathy’s old cabinets and counters were torn out. “I was at work when it happened,” says Cathy. “And to my surprise, when I got home everything was cleaned up. That’s how every day went. They came in, did their work for the day (and they are very efficient!) and always cleaned up before they left. The only indication they were ever there was the progress made in the kitchen!”

Save Water by Olivia Cane

While

Saving Your Wallet

I

t’s just a leaky faucet...no big deal, right? On a revolving carousel of things that need to get done around the house, a couple of leaky faucets probably don’t even break your top ten. But the Environmental Protection Agency and master plumber Alan Burkhalter of Alan’s Plumbing would like to share a few tidbits with you that might just change your mind about how damaging leaks can be. No coincidence, March 20-26 is national “Fix a Leak Week!” “The biggest problem with leaks is that they don’t seem all that serious,” explains Alan. “Yet a leaky faucet dripping at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons a year. Minor water leaks account for more than one trillion gallons of wasted water each year nationwide. That’s equal to the annual household water use in eleven million homes! Common leaks found around the house are worn toilet flappers, dripping faucets and busted valves...all of which are easily replaceable. Not fixing leaks

is like setting fire to your money. If your winter water use exceeds 12,000 gallons a month for a family of four, you have a problem.” So how do you perform a little doit-yourself detective work to see if you have leaks? Alan says, “Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, you probably have a leak. Another idea is to squeeze a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If the color shows up in the toilet bowl within, say, ten minutes (without flushing), you absolutely have a leak. Be sure to flush once you’re through because food coloring will stain your toilet.” Once you’ve identified that there is a problem and your money is flowing down the drain, don’t panic—help is on the way. At family-owned Alan’s Plumbing, Alan’s a master licensed plumber, his charming wife Jennifer answers the phones, his

brother Chris, sons Luke and Beau plus Jeff Johnson are all journeyman licensed plumbers, and Alan and Jennifer’s other son Jake and apprentices Jaime and Trevor are working toward their journeymen license. This crew brings years of expertise to fix your leaks as effectively and economically as possible. All longtime Sugar Land residents, the family Burkhalter is deeply invested in the community they serve. In addition to leaks, Alan’s Plumbing is fully licensed to do plumbing inspections, waterlines, gas lines, sewer lines, garbage disposals and water heaters. “We’re not going to leave you leaking,” says Alan. “All you have to do is give us a call—we’re on the way.”

What’s an SoEscape Room? A by Amy Sharp

n escape room is a team oriented game where players are locked in a themed room and have to solve a series of puzzles—including math, logic, word and number puzzles—to escape within an hour. After gaining popularity in Asia, Western Europe and the West Coast, escape rooms are popping up across the country. We caught up with a group of Dulles High School students at Escape Again Rooms—our local Sugar Land escape room—who had just escaped. It wasn’t the first visit for many of the kids, but for some it was their first time to escape the room in time. “It’s immersive entertainment,” said one. Another young man, who has done every room and also hosted his birthday at Escape Again, said, “I just love the themes. They’re so cool. This was my second time in ‘The Hike,’ but there was some new stuff and it definitely threw me off. I like that Escape Again is close to home—we don’t have to drive into Houston— and it’s just 25 bucks. Time flies when you’re in there, and I can’t wait for the new rooms. It’s so fun...I recommend it to everyone!” Know what’s even better? This is an hour that kids (and adults!) are truly interacting with each other. No cells phones and no video games. Co-owner David Sebek says, “It’s virtual reality in reality. You’re in the game, first person. It’s a bonding, shared experience.” Two to ten people can play a room. “Five to six is a really good number, “ says David. “But the more people you have, the better your odds of escaping.” Bring a few friends for a great time or make Escape Again the location of your next birthday party, shower, bachelorette party or corporate team building event. David says, “We’ve hosted the George Ranch girls soccer team, bunco groups, teachers and corporate teams. On a night we are normally closed, you can rent the party room and have the place to yourself. Bring in

your choice of food and drinks...and do something different from your usual routine. Whether you escape or not...you will definitely have a good time!”

A Beautiful Master Bath

Delivered Quickly and On Budget

W

by Marie Page

hen Shilpa Redman’s master shower leak started turning to mold, her bathroom was quickly stripped to the studs. “It was work to the house we weren’t expecting, and we wanted the bathroom redone and finished quickly.” With no clue where to turn, Shilpa contacted three contractors based on their Angie’s List ratings. One of those contractors was Teri Gilberg (better known as ‘The Re-Modelista’). “We chose Teri,” continues Shilpa, “because she was able to provide a list of exactly what needed to be done, and had the contacts and contractors to coordinate the work and get started right away. The other proposals required that we line up some of the work ourselves. We didn’t have time for that. Even if we did, we really didn’t know where to start. Teri’s proposal took care of everything in the bathroom, start to finish. It was an easy choice.” Because the Redmans were not expecting to refinish the bathroom, they had done nothing regarding picking finishes and colors. “Teri was very helpful,” says Shilpa. “She recommended people and vendors that walked us through the process. When work in our home started, Teri’s crews always showed up when they said they would. Teri stopped by every morning to check-in as well. Everyone was in constant contact, and when there was a question we worked

together toward a solution. To be honest, I didn’t have to get involved much at all. Teri just took care of things. She had provided an estimate of five weeks to finish the bathroom. But to my surprise, it was finished in three!” Shilpa loves her new master bath. “I couldn’t be happier! Teri took our time frame and our budget and delivered exactly what we wanted. Plus, she’s very easy to work with, I’m telling everyone I know. In fact, she’s back at my house right now replacing some rotted exterior wood around our front door and balcony. It’s a project I had put off because I wasn’t sure who to hire. s your preschool closed for the summer? If you find yourself weeding through multiple summer camps—hoping to select the right ones—we have the perfect solution for you. Montessori Kids Universe is open year-round, and during the summer they offer a special curriculum called “Around the World.” Head of School Dr. Rebecca Deurlein says, “With this curriculum, your child will study various countries through a unique in-house field-trip program. Plus, since we’re fortunate to live in such a diverse community, we will be inviting people to come in and talk to the children about their native country and bring artifacts right into the classroom. Everyone talks about the ‘summer slide’—when children lose traction on the knowledge they gained throughout the school year. At Montessori Kids Universe, we keep the learning going year-round. But the kids are having so much fun...they don’t even realize it!” Of course, since it is summer, Montessori Kids Universe also provides the “Summer Camp” experience. A petting zoo, firefighters, and water games are all making an appearance through the summer months! The Montessori Kids Universe summer program is open to all children ages 3 months to 6 years. Be sure to register now to reserve your spot. Interested Head of School, in the regular preschool program? There’s openings Dr. Rebecca Deurlein right now for all ages. Check it out!

ou’re a busy, active person. Always up for a hike or even a bike ride...ready to take that hill. Yet these days it seems like the more active you are, the more you suffer. Your legs hurt in places you don’t even have names. But did you ever consider that the pain you’re suffering might be from the misalignment of your feet? Dr. Marco Vargas, founder of Foot & Ankle Associates—one of the most comprehensive podiatry centers in the Southeastern United States—sees a great number of patients with misaligned feet. “Unfortunately, a lot of people mistake the pain for normal wear and tear and

18 ~ UPCLOSE ~ March 2017

may end up having surgery to correct it,” says Dr. Vargas. “Only when they experience a recurrence of the same chronic pain do they realize that their symptoms are related to misaligned feet.” Hip pain and sciatica, plantar fasciitis, shin splints, numbness on the bottoms of your feet—these are all indications that misaligned feet are the culprit. And it’s not something you can outgrow. As you get older, the symptoms only get worse. But help is on the way! Dr. Vargas and his team have a solution that works to correct misaligned feet: the HyProCure Solution. HyProCure is a titanium stent about the size of a paper clip that stabilizes the ankle bone, yet allows 100% normal joint range of motion. It’s not a joint-blocking device. Instead, it gives you complete freedom and full biomechanical function. The surgery has been performed on tens of thousands of adults and children with better Foot & Ankle Associates than 90% effectiveness and no drilling or screwing 281-313-0090 involved. “With such a successful, long-term cure for misaligned feet, we have a lot of really happy patients,” Memorial Hermann Southwest says Dr. Vargas. “The procedure is not complicated. 7737 Southwest Fwy., Suite 500 Most people experience little pain and can bear weight Houston, TX 77074 on their feet the same day.” “Call or email us for more information. The Guys You Want To See by Olivia Cane

When

SpringhasSprung You know Spring is coming to the Sugar Land area when: 1. You can’t stop sneezing. 2. Photos of Texas bluebonnets start popping up on your Facebook news feed. 3. Thirty seconds out of the shade and you’re melting. 4. All of the above. As any local will tell you, the answer is 4. Sometimes you can be gazing at photos of bluebonnets, melting and sneezing all at the same time! So here’s a harder question about spring temperatures. What do you need to know in order to hire a really good A/C repairman? A top-notch A/C guy will certainly keep you from melting and sneezing, at least in your own home. And the best way he can do that is by coming out and doing a spring tune up on your existing air conditioner. Fortunately, you have Brian Jackson of Jackson Air and Heat. In business for thirtyfive years, Jackson Air is EPA and NATE certified, recipients of the Angie’s List “Super Service” Award and the BBB Award for

Excellence for the last eight years. There isn’t anything Jackson Air doesn’t know about making your house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. So what will a spring tune up do for you? “If your A/C unit has problems, those problems can get a lot more expensive the longer you wait to fix them,” explains Brian. “All too often, your A/C konks out on the hottest weekend of the summer, which is always when it’s the toughest to find a decent repairman. You’re smart to get out ahead of potential problems now.” “When Jackson Air services your A/C, we don’t just breeze through it. We cover absolutely everything, starting with an inspection of the entire system, cleaning coils, cleaning drain lines, lubricating all mechanical parts, check the thermostat controls and system wiring, inspect your ductwork and check your refrigerant and pressure levels. A spring tune up is much more affordable than replacing a major part.” But if your A/C is ten or more years old, Brian and the guys at Jackson strongly recommend you upgrade your system to a Trane

variable speed XV20i air conditioner with TruComfort™ Technology. Trane has revolutionized the way we cool our homes. Brian says, “No more hot spots—or hot rooms. No more monster energy bills. A Trane variable speed runs at the exact speed necessary to keep your entire home comfortable. It also removes humidity and consumes less energy, which saves you tons of money. It’s what I have in my own home!” “Give us a call, we’re in the business of keeping you comfortable. And enjoy those bluebonnets...they only come around once a year!”

ASK MARGIE

The Lawyer Who Cares THIS MONTH’S TOPIC:

Peace of Mind When You Need It The Most

T

by Amy Sharp

his past summer, State Farm Agent Tracy Walker learned that she had a ping-pong ball sized tumor on her pancreas, an even bigger one in her liver, and four other spots in her body. “I had gone to my OB/GYN, who sent my records to MD Anderson. I learned I had moderate grade neuroendocrine sarcoma...the same cancer that took the life of Apple’s Steve Jobs.” For this type of cancer, there is no radiation or chemotherapy...only surgery. Tracy says, “I had no idea what my odds were, and I didn’t want to know. I just knew I was going to beat this. I’m a single mom and I need to be here. But I also knew that as a mom, I needed to make sure my kids were taken care of if I didn’t wake up from surgery. Everyone at MD Anderson kept asking if I had medical directives in place. It was such a relief that I did...and didn’t need to scramble to take care of it.” By lucky happenstance, earlier last year Tracy had enlisted Fort Bend attorney Margie Connolly to rework her will. “She suggested things in my

will I hadn’t thought of, and covered all the bases. My medical and financial directives were put into place.” Tracy’s a leap year baby, born February 29. The day of her surgery, August 10, is her new birthday. “Three months after the surgery, I was declared cancer free. It’s widely known that stress wreaks havoc on the immune system, and having a will in place caused me less stress. Margie’s also done a will and directives for my adult daughter, Jennifer, who has Diabetes Type I. Life happens...and if Jennifer went into a coma, I could never pull the plug. It’s what Jennifer wants that matters. And with her financial directives, should she go into a coma, I can take care of her bills.” “Having your affairs in order gives peace of mind,” adds Tracy. “And peace of mind is good for your health. Margie gives that to you!”

lancy’s Public House—your favorite full-service, family-oriented restaurant on FM 359 in Richmond—is redoing their menu! Owner Sean Bielstein says, “We’re keeping the favorites of course. But we’ve had a great response to our daily specials by new chef, Brad Pitre. So we’re putting some of those on the menu permanently.” New menu items include Shrimp & Grits, Duroc Pork Chops and the Liam Neeson burger. Sean says, “South Carolina is the shrimp and grits capital of the world. Our customers say our Shrimp & Grits is comparable to South Carolina. That’s a great compliment! We expect to have our new menu out by April 1. But don’t worry, if you want Shrimp & Grits before then, just ask for it and we’ll make it for you.” And the Liam Neeson burger...it’s your favorite Clancy’s burger with a reuben on top. Sean says, “I’m not going to lie...you need a special set of skills to eat this burger.” Not only does April bring a new menu, it’s also the start of Sunday brunch and catering at Clancy’s. Sean says, “Brunch will be your favorite brunch foods with an Irish twist (think Chicken & Waffles).” With Clancy’s catering, you can bring the food voted “Best New Restaurant in Fort Bend” to your next party. Don’t see what you want on the catering menu? “No worries,” says Sean. “Tell us what you want and we will make it!” In addition to chef specials every day at lunch and dinner, Clancy’s offers a 16oz Prime Rib every Friday and Saturday. The $25 price includes asparagus and Yukon gold potatoes. But get there early, because once they run out of prime rib...you’re out of luck! These Kids Need Your Help!

#ReverseTheCuts #TXKidsMatter

D

uring the 84th Texas Legislative Session, there was a bill passed to cut $350 million from therapy services given through the Texas Medicaid program which serves medically fragile children with disabilities. However, the effect that such drastic cuts (28% rate reduction for many services) would have on therapy clinics and home health providers was not studied prior to passing the cuts. MedCare co-founder Paige Kinkade says, “The provider reimbursement cuts were made based off of bad data in a flawed report that was provided to the legislature by the Health and Human Services commission. But it’s our families that are suffering. When a child is in therapy, every month, every year counts. This is an access to care issue and hundreds of families in our community cannot access care. Here’s what we are seeing, right here in Fort Bend County: Sandra Perez’s son Joaquin spent eight months on a waitlist before receiving occupational, speech and physical therapy services from MedCare. Sandra says, “Being on the waitlist, I felt like Joaquin was a second class citizen. Not a priority for anyone. Today, MedCare has brought the

light back into his life. Joaquin can now walk. He won a 3rd grade pizza party for improvement in vocabulary. But I’m concerned about maintaining his therapies in the near future. If authorizations are delayed, he may have to go without.” Tashera Steven’s 17 year old daughter Kianna was diagnosed with ADHD and short term memory issues in 3rd grade. Finally, in 9th grade, she started receiving speech therapy twice a week. It was something Tashera had to fight for. “It was very hard to get services, like pulling teeth.” Today, Kianna’s services have been cut to once a week, even though she is still recommended for twice a week. Veronica Hernandez’s two sons, Henry and Jayden, both need occupational therapy. Both kids have been on a therapy waitlist for more than a year, with no explanation why. Veronica has contacted at least five therapy companies with the same result. “They put us on the waitlist, and then they call us to tell us unfortunately they can’t be seen yet.” Adriana Ledesma’s daughter Leah is eight years old with global developmental delay. She merely wants basic age level skills for her daughter,

but after six months, she remains on a waitlist for therapy. “What we are asking,” continues Paige, “is for each of you to use your voice to reach out to local legislative offices. Clients affected include low income families, but also families that have children with complex medical needs—severe developmental delays, autism, cerebral palsy and other diagnoses. Treatment is essential to them. Our legislature is very welcoming and seemingly interested. However, not as many families have come to them as we would like…so they don’t understand how significant this problem is in Texas. We need your help!” MedCare Pediatric Group, LP 713-995-9292 12371 S. Kirkwood Rd. Stafford, Texas 77477 www.medcarepediatric.com

takes care of it for you! That’s right. No more paper forms, no more checks to deposit or chasing people down for money. Owner Jenni Leonetti says, “We did a pilot with Clements High School with fantastic results. We designed several items for the school—including tshirts, hoodies, caps, stadium blankets, decals and more—with options to add student names and jersey numbers. Then we created a store online for Clements under our domain. Students, parents and fans ordered through the site, paying with a credit card. Then we processed, printed and organized the order for delivery. We can do a single fundraising shirt or a store full of items like we did for Clements. So easy!” Maybe you want Leonetti to print your shirts and other spirit items, but you’d rather design them yourself. “Our new online shirt designer puts you in the design driver’s seat. Upload your own artwork or logo, or design right there on the site. You can pick shirt style, colors...everything! Once it’s perfect, we can print it.” 2017 marks the 25th anniversary of Leonetti Graphics. This family-owned and operated business grew from a tiny Houston apartment to a 6250 sq ft printing warehouse and a storefront in an old Missouri City fire station. What better way to celebrate 25 years than with lots of giveaways! Jenni says, “All you need to do is ‘Like’ Leonetti Graphics on Facebook. Every month this year we’ll do a different giveaway. They
