Truly a family business, Marlene and Samir’s children Gracia and Alex grew up in the store.

ogether with her husband Samir, Marlene Dharia launched highly successful Plaza Jewelers more than 25 years ago. Marlene grew up in a business environment in El Salvador. “It’s just something you have in your blood,” says Marlene. “So when we opened the store, I was no stranger to how a business works.” Today, for more than a quarter century, Marlene has taken care of the Spanish speaking clientele at Plaza Jewelers. “Our business is based on excellent service and the best prices in town. We have a very friendly staff. Some of our employees have been with us more than 20 years, giving their best on behalf of our customers every day. Plus, we have a fantastic on-site designer and we carry everything!” Truly a family business, Marlene and Samir’s children Gracia and Alex grew up in the store. “We made our sacrifices raising our children,” says Marlene. “But they learned that money doesn’t grow on trees. You really have to work for it. I’m thankful that once the business did take off, I was able to take time for myself and my family, especially my now six-year-old grandson, Alejandro.” Today her son Alex—who as a child once found his finger accidentally closed in on the jewelry safe—is Head of Marketing at Plaza Jewelers. Located just off the Southwest Freeway near Sugar Creek, services at Plaza Jewelers include repair services, appraisals, professional jewelry repair and cleaning, and building the perfect engagement ring...where the Plaza Jewelers on-site designer uses CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) to create a setting for you. Stop in for yourself and see the more than 40 showcases of engagement rings and wedding bands, and a large selection of diamond stud earrings, fashion diamond jewelry and Swiss watches. Marlene says, “Our reputation is built on our commitment to quality and customer service. We look forward to getting to know you!”

everly Davis and her family moved to the Sugar Land area in 1986 when her husband, Lt. Colonel Larry Davis, retired from the United States Air Force and began the Air Force JROTC program at Dulles High School. They have raised two sons and are now the proud grandparents of two more boys. Beverly recently discovered a rash on her lower right leg near her ankle. When it started to spread and began itching, she consulted her family doctor who immediately referred her to Dr. Ulises Baltazar, a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic. For more than ten years, Dr. Baltazar has been a highly regarded vein specialist with a reputation that goes beyond the Fort Bend County, Sugar Land area. He is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery. Beverly scheduled a consultation with Dr. Baltazar. She says, “Dr. Baltazar is so personal, he makes you feel right at home. I got the impression that he really likes people and above all, he really likes his patients. Even his staff is exceptionally nice.” Dr. Baltazar confirmed that what Beverly was experiencing was not just a skin problem, but had to do with a circulation issue and if not addressed, could result in venous stasis ulcers. Beverly liked that Dr. Baltazar took a conservative approach. Dr. Baltazar told her, “Let’s take the

first step and see if that corrects the problem.” All it took was one in-office procedure for Beverly’s leg and she recovered quickly. Between her initial visit and her laser therapy, Beverly found out that one of her friends was also a patient of Dr. Baltazar, and her friend could not stop talking about how much she admired him. After her procedure, another friend whose husband had been a patient of Dr. Baltazar said, “Isn’t he great? He was so caring and so interested in my husband’s health.” Beverly couldn’t agree with them more. She began her recovery through the referral of her family doctor and along the way she experienced what her friends echoed...Dr. Baltazar is caring and capable. Beverly says, “I wouldn’t recommend anyone else.”

MOMMY MAKEOVER

While motherhood is good for the soul, it may be hard on the body...

I

by Olivia Cane

f you’re a mom, then you know that motherhood is equal parts losing your mind and finding your soul. Keeping track of diaper bags and pacifiers, lunch boxes and backpacks—plus all those late nights spent soothing a sick child and early mornings getting kids off to school can leave any mom looking and feeling a little worse for the wear. When you finally do have time to look in the mirror, it’s hard to recognize yourself. Stretch marks on your tummy, loose skin that no dieting or exercise can make right again, breasts that look a lot less fluffy than they used to, a ten pound luggage set beneath each eye. Dr. Eric Humble of Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery has perfected the art of making your outside reflect how you feel on the inside...which is why the “Mommy Makeover” is one of his most popular procedures. As a board-certified plastic surgeon, he is an expert in restoring you to your slim, youthful, perky pre-mommy state. During your free consultation, he can custom-design a plan of action that will address that loose skin on your tummy, eliminate stretch marks,

restore the fullness and beauty of your breasts (or give you the silhouette you always wished you’d had!), using both surgical and non-surgical procedures... or both. Imagine having an hourglass figure again. Imagine feeling confident and beautiful in a piece of lingerie that you wear not because it covers your “trouble spots,” but because it showcases your bodacious new body. Imagine making your grand entrance into a party, a restaurant, even your kids’ PTA meeting, and knowing you no longer have to hide or camouflage your body. Being self-conscious stops the minute you no longer feel as though you have something to be selfconscious about. From long experience, Dr. Humble knows that helping to correct “imperfections” can bring back more than a beautiful, youthful appearance. It can restore his patients’ love of life. “Sometimes the best way to happiness is working from the outside in,” he explains. “When a superhero like a mom has one less thing to worry about, she can be even more present for her family. So that’s what I do—whether it’s a breast lift (with or without implants), a tummy tuck, liposuction, thigh lift or one of the many other procedures or services we offer.” By his own admission, Dr. Humble knows a superhero of his own: Dr. Lin Humble, his wife and mother of his two sons. “She’s beautiful on the outside as well as the inside. Everyone who meets Lin feels the same way our sons and I do about her.”

amille Crow, owner of Business Spirit, Inc., has always driven a Chevy. “I’ve had a Cutlass, two Suburbans and a Tahoe. That Tahoe has been sideswiped, T-Boned and hit head on by a Dodge Dually. None of the accidents were my fault, and no child or anything in the car was touched. I’m keeping that car until the wheels fall off!” Back in Houston for her family’s last car, her husband bought an Equinox from Classic Chevy Sugar Land. “My husband did shop around. But he found you can’t beat the reputation and sales people at Classic Chevy. It’s easy, a good price, and just an all around great total package. My best friend actually ended up buying the exact same car in the same color. We have used the service department as well, and it’s a really great setup. The Equinox needed some recall work and they just took care of it.” If you attended the Classic Chevrolet Chili

Cook-off last month, you may have noticed the snazzy aprons worn by some members of the Classic Chevy team. Those aprons were created by Camille’s company, Business Spirit, Inc. “I truly enjoy what I do, because it’s never the same thing twice. One person wants a feather duster, and the next a beach towel. I’ve done tents, tshirts, billboards, golf tournament prizes, envelopes, printables and wearables. With more than 3000 suppliers, we can pretty much make anything you can imagine! In addition to those aprons, I’ve created koozies, cups, pens, notepads, coasters, mousepads and tshirts for Classic Chevy Sugar Land.” Classic Chevy General Manager Jeff Sebastian says, “The products provided by Camille and Business Spirit are top-notch. Looking great for the Chili Cook-off was important. We were raising money for local heroes. Camille created the fun look we wanted for the event!” Camille adds, “What I really love about Classic Chevy, is that whether I’m in the dealership for my business or theirs, it’s the same feeling. I never feel like they are infringing on my time or I’m infringing on theirs. Everyone is always so welcoming. I have four teenagers in my house, so we have some car shopping coming up. We will buy Chevy’s of course, and I know we will be back at Classic Chevy Sugar Land!”

A Custom Designed Pool, Pergola and Kitchen

M

by Marie Page

ichael and Ana found Bratton Pools in a magazine. “We liked what we saw, so we gave them a call,” says Michael. “We wanted a pool, kitchen and pergola, and the pool had to be a lap pool. After meeting Mike Bratton, the owner of Bratton Pools, we went with his estimate. He is very honest and open, and I just got a good business vibe from him. I had already done my homework on some of the features I wanted, and Mike could answer every single question correctly.” For Michael’s lap pool, Bratton Pools created a unique design that combines geometric shapes with curves to maximize the pool size while staying inside the property easements. “We started in their 3D software and got a good idea of what the pool would look like,” says Michael. “For the color scheme and materials, Mike recommended stores and we picked out what we wanted. There was no ceiling. We wanted the decking to look like tile and they took care of that too. For the kitchen, I provided the appliances and Bratton Pools designed and installed the kitchen.” Mike Bratton says, “The selected color scheme together with

the irregular shaped pool turned out fantastic. We used Scabella Travertine from Italy for the pool coping/edging, waterfall wall, and outdoor kitchen. The all-tile spa spillway is custom, and we wrapped the spa raised wall in tile as well. The blue pebble plaster with glass beads reflects the sunlight and gives a high-end appearance not often seen in pools. Both the pergola and kitchen are custom. The deck is a stamped pattern to simulate travertine pavers, and all of the pool lights and bubbler lights on the sun shelf are colorchanging LEDs.” “We did a lot of tweaks during construction,” adds Michael. “Mike was always very open to my ideas and had my best interest in mind as we made decisions. One thing I wanted was to sit in my spa with it running, and see the waterfalls at the same time. That couldn’t be done with the two booster pumps in our design...so Mike added a third at no cost. We love the finished product and absolutely recommend Bratton Pools to anyone wanting a custom pool and backyard.” Bratton Pools ~ 281-988-7700 www.brattonpools.com

ASK MARGIE

The Lawyer Who Cares THIS MONTH’S TOPIC:

Estate Planning

by Amy Sharp obert Meyer and Ginger Chachere met Fort Bend attorney Margie Connolly through their BNI group. “We are Executive Consultants with Ambit Energy,” says Robert. “We sell electricity to homes and businesses. Through the BNI (Business Network International), we got to know Margie and some of her clients. The more we heard her clients talk, the more we realized we needed to do an estate plan. Ginger had done a will in the past, but that was about it. We felt we really needed to get a good plan in place.” Ginger and Robert met Margie at her office. “We explained our wishes,” says Ginger, “and Margie gave us different options. She’s very personable and really listens. She explored our wishes by asking questions and really making sure we covered all our bases. She explained in great detail the pros and cons of what we were considering. Then she took those details and our decisions and drafted our documents, including our trust, our

wills, medical directives and power of attorney.” “When we received the drafts, we made a few tweaks and put in the final details— names, beneficiaries, etc.,” continues Robert. “Then we reconvened at Margie’s office, where she presented our finished documents in a binder. We reviewed them in detail and got the required signatures in place. It was a painless process.” “My job is to take the worry out of growing old,” says Margie. “Estate planning doesn’t begin and end with a last will and testament. It can include living trusts, developing a plan to mitigate or avoid estate taxes, and working to ensure that your life’s savings and assets are safe from your beneficiaries’ creditors after your death. Medical directives and powers of attorney are also part of your estate plan. It’s not the most pleasant topic to talk about. But it’s necessary for the benefit of you and your loved ones.” “I highly recommend Margie for this service,” adds Robert. “She’s knowledgeable and informative, and she gets the job done.”

other’s Day is just around the corner. Are you prepared? Before you snag some pre-packaged chocolates, stop and think about what Mom really needs...a little time to relax! Imelda Mahoney, mom and local owner of Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services, says, “I know from experience, moms have enough to do without scrubbing and scouring, too! And as a mother, I also understand the importance of a safe, clean home. Check cleaning off mom’s to-do list by giving that job to us. Just like mom, our teams use top-notch products to deliver a serious sparkle and we don’t believe in cutting corners. We get the job done right so mom can focus on the family.” Breakfast in bed is a time-honored Mother’s Day tradition, but the post-breakfast cleanup puts Mom right back to work. Let her enjoy a treat...and leave the cleanup to Mahoney’s. Every team from Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services is bonded and insured, has undergone thorough background checks, and arrives in a clearly-labeled company car, so you can have complete confidence. Mom should never have to make the meal, clear the table, do the dishes, and clean the kitchen, too. Even if dad and the kids take turns and pitch in, nobody cleans like Mahoney’s. When a Mahoney’s team sweeps through your house, they’ll leave the kitchen sparkling, the bathrooms disinfected, the shelves and counters dust-free, and every bed made neatly. Mom, your job description could fill a book. Accountant, teacher, creative designer, therapist, doctor, taxi driver, the list goes on and on. Don’t you have enough to do without cleaning? Take Mother’s Day into your own hands. Put down that mop and bucket and pick up the phone to call Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services. Happy Mother’s Day!

So What is Pediatric Therapy? by Amy Sharp edCare Pediatric Therapy and Nursing provides comprehensive therapy and nursing services to children age birth to 21 years. As Vice President of Rehab Services, Sommer LaShomb supervises more than 50 therapists across five locations day in and day out that are making a difference in the lives of children with specific needs. So what exactly do these therapists do? “Many people think of recovery from an injury or accident when they think of therapy,” says Sommer. “But in pediatrics, we don’t necessarily mean recover. Many of these kids were born with a disability. Through physical, occupational and/or speech therapy, we are teaching them to adapt to Vice President of Rehab Services Sommer LaShomb working with 18-year-old Juan the world with the challenges they were born with.” during aquatic therapy at MedCare. “When we think about physical therapy, we often think about walking,” continues Sommer. “But it's not just learning to walk. It’s walking with the appropriate pattern. Some kids are stronger on one side of the body than the other. We teach them how to walk using the strong parts of their body. Physical therapy incorporates postural control and use of core muscles to sit, stand, even crawl. We teach use of equipment—wheelchairs, walkers and standers—when appropriate. For our stronger kids, we are refining higher level skills—dribbling a ball, riding a bike, swimming. We are teaching balance and coordination to help these kids keep up with their peers.” Occupational therapy is working with kids to engage in their sole occupation: Play! “Paying attention and cause and effect,” says Sommer. “We want these kids to be able to take turns and play with others. Skills like tying shoes, brushing teeth and hair, getting dressed—including buttons and zippers—are also taught in occupational therapy. We build hand strength and work on fine motor skills like cutting, writing, catching and throwing, stacking blocks and stringing beads. For kids that do not function typically to touch, light or sound, we teach them how to regulate their bodies and accommodate when they are getting too much sensory stimulation or too little.” And speech therapy...“It’s speech of course,” says Sommer. “And so much more. It’s understanding and forming words and sentences. It’s auditory processing. The social piece is big—eye contact, taking turns, and engaging in appropriate conversation. And for kids that are not yet ready to speak, it’s strengthening the necessary muscles for the future.”

Research has shown that early intervention is key. “The earlier we can remedy or teach a child to work with his/her body, the more likely they are to be independent and successful. If you feel your child is not developing appropriately for their age, I encourage you to schedule a global assessment of skills. Even if your doctor says wait...don’t. The consultation is free and only takes 10-15 minutes. You might just get peace of mind...or you might be starting the path to crucial early intervention. Either way, you’ve done the right thing.” MedCare co-founder Paige Kinkade adds, “Our singular motive is to help children. We accept Medicaid and will work with any insurance company. If you feel your child might benefit from our services, we would love the opportunity to earn your trust. We are here to help!” MedCare Pediatric Group, LP 713-995-9292 12371 S. Kirkwood Rd. alanced Body Image, the functional medicine practice owned by Dr. Julia Ward, has relocated to Sugar Land...right around the corner from Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. “I’ve referred a lot of my bio-identical hormone patients to Campbell’s,” says Dr. Ward. “They do a great job.” Dr. Ward first became interested in bio-identical hormones when she wanted them for herself. “I was very fatigued and run down,” says Dr. Ward. “And bio-identical hormones aren’t something generally taught in med school. I wanted to know what they were and how they work, so I attended a conference and signed up for a fellowship with The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. After several tests, we found in part my fatigue was due to an MTHFR genetic mutation...where I process B vitamins less efficiently. By treating this condition and utilizing hormone replacement, I feel 100% better.” When you seek bio-identical hormones with Dr. Ward, she may run blood, urine and/or saliva tests based on the way you prefer to have hormones delivered. “We always deliver the hormones estrogen and testosterone as either a pellet inserted under the skin, capsules or a

transdermal cream. This is where Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy comes in. The capsules and creams are customized to you, the patient. I call in a prescription of your exact strength and dosage based on your test results and they make it. You are not over or under-medicated. Campbell’s maintains all of the trusted certifications, so I can prescribe with confidence...they’re well-trained and know what they’re doing. And the staff is more than happy to answer questions and follow-up with my patients. It’s a win-win.” Founder of Campbell’s Compounding, Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. We both strive to help you take control of your health and regain balance in your life. Welcome to the neighborhood Dr. Ward!”

A Complete Kitchen Makeover in Four Weeks!

N

by Marie Page

ancy Trunk has been following Teri Gilberg’s (better known as “The Re-Modelista”) stories in UpClose magazine. “My husband Fred and I had never remodeled before, and we were intrigued. We needed work done, so we started small. First we took down old wallpaper in the center of the house and painted. Tony, the supervisor for the job, paid close attention to every detail...seeing things that I didn’t even notice anymore. Then we had them tear down our original aluminum patio cover and level the patio. Because I had no interest—in fact, I couldn’t even envision— how the patio should look, Teri found absolutely beautiful travertine that has just changed the look of my patio. Then this spring we went whole hog with a kitchen remodel!” “I interviewed others for the project,” continues Nancy. “But only Teri was willing to work with my ideas. She was the only contractor that did not think I was crazy when I showed her pictures of my colors: peach and terracotta. I wanted those colors and a marble, curved farmhouse apron sink I found on the internet. The first surprise came when Teri could get my sink at her contractor’s discount. Then, Teri built my kitchen around that sink. She took me by the hand and we picked out the cabinets, the tile, the backsplash and the counters. My only job was to pick up knobs and door pulls, and that took me two weeks without her! Tony did beautiful cabinet work, and my favorite feature is the framed medallions he put above and below the oven. We love that custom feature.” The Trunks kitchen was completely demolished and rebuilt, including lifting the 1970’s drop ceiling. Nancy says, “My husband is in construction, and he was impressed. The estimate for the job was four to six weeks. Teri’s crew worked seven till seven six days

a week. Each evening, everything was cleaned up before they left. Despite adding floor work midstream (we realized our old floors wouldn’t match!) they were done in four weeks. We were surprised!” “Our kitchen is gorgeous! Fred and I plan to age in place at this house, and Teri made recommendations that will really help us. She recommended more drawers than cabinets. It’s more organized, and you can get to the back of the drawer unlike a cabinet...so less wasted space. I actually have one empty drawer after moving back in the kitchen, and I didn’t get rid of anything!” “My neighbors stopped in often to check the progress of my kitchen. We’re all nosey like that. And now one of my neighbors wants a kitchen just like mine! I told her to call Teri, and I’ve already put Teri on a timeline for other parts of my house this fall. I know she’ll do a wonderful job!”

hen Deb Quintero was a child, her grandmother told her she had a special way with animals...and that when she grew up she should do something with that. “I never thought much of it,” says Deb. “And I certainly didn’t think it would ever happen.” But it did. More than 20 years ago, Deb popped into a Houston area big-box pet store. They were hiring and she needed a job. She quickly climbed the ranks to managing the grooming at that store. Then in 2005, she took over ownership of local Celebrities Grooming. “What I really love is teaching people,” says Deb. “Grooming dogs takes technique. When you’re nice to a dog, the dog responds. You can’t get frustrated and upset...because then the dog gets upset too. People I’ve trained have opened their own shops and some have become instructors, moving my techniques forward. We really cater to the dogs. They’re our little patients. We know them by name. We know what they like. And we use top-of-the-line TropiClean quality, environmentally-safe and crueltyfree products. Your dog will look better, smell better, and stay cleaner longer. We groom dogs of all ages and can accommodate special needs. Here, all dogs are treated as celebrities!” In addition to in-salon grooming, Celebrities offers day and overnight boarding for small dogs

(with five bathroom breaks/day!) and mobile grooming... where the state-of-the-art, eco-friendly and self-contained Celebrities Grooming van comes to you and takes care of grooming your dog. “It’s a huge convenience for our clients, and it’s less stress for your dogs!” says Deb. The team at Celebrities—which includes Deb’s daughters Bonita and Jenny, her granddaughters Victoria and Veronica, plus Amy, Dana, Nicole and Melanie—were all trained by Deb. Some have been there longer than 10 years. icki Haislup with WEICHERT, REALTORS® has utilized surface refinishing in the homes she’s listed for more than 20 years. “It’s just a really inexpensive way to perk up a house. Granite can get expensive. Resurfacing the existing countertops is wonderful, and you don’t have to invest a large amount. It’s great for shower pans too. Sometimes you just can’t get them clean, and surface refinishing makes them look like new!” About 10 years ago, Vicki discovered local Miracle Method Surface Refinishing owned by Jonee and Paul Barnett. “I wasn’t pleased with who I was using, so I gave Miracle Method a try. What a difference! They’ve been my resurfacing company ever since. You get personal care and service when you work with Paul and Jonee. When I have a house where we want to do resurfacing, I give them a call and within a day I have a bid I can give to my clients. Paul and Jonee have all of my favorite colors on file, and they match everything for me...so it’s really a seamless process. And I can assure my clients their home is in good hands.” Miracle Method Surface Refinishing starts with a professional cleaning and surface restoration. This miracle fixes chips, cracks, spots, stains, and lackluster finishes. Any grout is completely cleaned, repaired and sealed, so no more cracking and molding. Then, the miracle finish is applied...and the surface is as good as (or better than) new! Countertops, tubs, tile surrounds, shower pans and even tile floors can all be refinished, and surface refinishing can save 75% over the cost of remodeling. It’s easy to see why it’s Vicki’s choice to perk up a house that’s about to go on the market! “Most recently I contacted Miracle Method about one of my client’s rental properties,” says Vicki. “There was a huge stain on the bathroom countertop, and they just didn’t want to replace the entire counter. Paul and Jonee worked their magic and in no time at all that rental property had a ‘like new’ bathroom countertop.” “I truly enjoy working with Paul and Jonee,” adds Vicki. “It’s so nice to work with a privately-owned company where the owners live locally and are also involved in the

community. Plus they provide a great service and product. It’s neighbors helping neighbors. I frequently recommend them to my clients and fellow agents.” Miracle Method Surface Refinishing 281-240-2284 603 Murphy Road, Stafford, TX (call for hours) www.miraclemethod.com/ houstonsw

Preventing Skin Cancer by Amy Sharp

kin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. With summer approaching, Celia Vaclavik PA-C and SRT Certified Technician Pauline Lausser of Rosenberg Dermatology provided these tips on skin cancer prevention: 1. Wear sunscreen products with physical blockers like zinc or titanium dioxide. Celia says, “Physical blockers are stronger than chemical blockers and have more broad spectrum UV protection. We sell the EltaMD products here at the office and they are fantastic. Always apply every two hours, and stay covered. Wear a hat. WPF clothing is great, especially for kids. Remember, babies six months and younger should not wear sunscreen, and should be kept out of the sun.” 2. Check your moles. “It’s simple,” says Pauline. “ABCDE: Assymetric moles, moles with irregular Borders, moles with really dark or varying Color, moles with a Diameter bigger than a pencil eraser or a mole that’s Evolving should be checked by a medical professional. 3. Avoid tanning beds. “The UVA rays in these beds are just as damaging as the sun,” says Celia. 4. Schedule a yearly check with a dermatologist. Being checked by a professional is your best defense. Most skin cancer can be cured when it’s found and treated early. Should you find yourself with skin cancer, Rosenberg Dermatology is one of the only offices in the area providing SRT100 Vision™ treatment, a non-surgical approach to treating skin cancer. Pauline says, “Skin cancer can be very disfiguring, and the surgeries to remove it even more disfiguring. With SRT we are not

cutting. We are using the exact amount of superficial radiation you need to kill the skin cancer.” There are three types of skin cancer: melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. “They are all tied to UVA and UVB rays,” says Celia. “And a burn you receive in your 20’s could be the cause of skin cancer in your 60’s. It’s why prevention is so important. Wear your physical blocking sunscreen on your face, neck, chest and arms...any area with constant exposure. The UVA rays even come through the tinted glass of your car, and they cause aging too. There really isn’t a good reason not to wear sunscreen!” Happy Summer!

for the Man in Your Life

by Amy Sharp elebrating 10 years of success! In 2007, Margot Sayre went on a cruise that changed her life. “I met a girl that introduced me to a startup company selling custom men’s shirts. By that chance meeting, I became a Founding Partner with J.Hilburn and launched the brand into the Houston market. We have grown from selling custom shirts to now offering almost everything a man needs in his wardrobe.” J.Hilburn has been spotted on the red carpet, awarded Esquire’s #1 Custom Dress Shirt, and has been featured in GQ and other media. “Our clothes are custom-designed and made-to-fit with extended sizes available. We use Italian fabrics for our shirts, pants, sport coats, suits and formalwear. We also offer casual items, shoes and accessories at many price points. We don’t have storefronts, so without the retail mark-up we pass the savings onto the client.” Margot meets her clients by appointment at their home or office. “Most men hate to shop. I help them save time and money and help them look their best.” Margot takes measurements, discusses fit, and helps select and style their clothing. Some clients purchase a few pieces and others want a complete wardrobe. Margot says, “Once they try J.Hilburn, they realize the quality and fit, they receive compliments and they want more! A well-fitted pant, shirt, and/ or suit completely changes your look, and can make you look 10-15 lbs. trimmer. Fit IS fashion!” As a Stylist, Margot can go through a client’s closet, telling him what to get rid of, keep, add, and help maximize his wardrobe. “There is no required minimum order and no charge for my personal style consulting. I keep measurements and preferences on file, so reordering through me or online is easy.” “I love my job and enjoy helping my clients look and feel their best which gives them confidence. Finally.. Anna Jo A Contact Lens

that WORKS for by Amy Sharp

A

nna Jo Fortner of Lake Jackson has a very difficult eye situation. “I have been legally blind since the 6th grade,” say Anna Jo. “And I’ve had a lot of eye surgeries trying to correct that, including radial keratotomy, surface ablation and LASIK. When I had my first surgery, I was a young mother...and I’ve been battling problems all these years. Several times I’ve broken down and cried. But rock bottom came when I was wearing a soft lens covered by a hard lens. It was not comfortable and my eyes were super dry. My eye doctor felt he couldn’t help me, that we were hitting a brick wall. So he referred me to Dr. Tom Arnold at Today’s Vision in Sugar Land. Dr. Arnold is one of very few doctors in Texas who fit custom scleral contact lenses. Dr. Arnold says, “These lenses are large-diameter gas permeable contact lenses specially designed to vault over the entire corneal surface and rest Dr. Tom Arnold on the ‘white’ of the eye (the sclera). In doing so, the irregular cornea is functionally replaced with a perfectly smooth optical surface to correct vision

problems, and the space between the cornea and the back surface of the lens acts as a fluid reservoir...so the patient’s eyes are not dry. These lenses were perfect for Anna Jo. Her eyes are shaped like the bottom of a bowl... rounded then flat. This lens gives her the surface she needs to be able to see, without the dry eye.” “I was skeptical,” say Anna Jo. “But Dr. Arnold took a lot of time with me and explained everything. And to my surprise, the very first lens fit perfectly. That has never happened with any doctor that has ever fit me in a contact lens.” And the result? “That drive from Lake Jackson to Sugar Land is the best drive I’ve ever made. This lens is amazing! You really don’t even know it’s in your eye, and it doesn’t slide around at all. When I don’t have this lens in, I see six moons. We have a place in the country, and I literally can’t see anything. That has all been corrected, I’m seeing things I haven’t seen in years. Thank you Dr. Arnold!” Scleral contact lenses are a great option for those with an irregular cornea due to keratoconus, corneal transplant, dry eye, LASIK or trauma. Dr.

“Several times I’ve broken down and cried.”

Arnold says, “Many of my patients were never able to wear contact lenses before, or doing something crazy like Anna Jo and wearing two lenses in the same eye. Not anymore. Plus we can do the full range of vision correction with these lenses, including distance, intermediate and near vision.” Think these lenses might be for you? How to Choose an Attorney by Amy Sharp

I

f you’re in need of an attorney, chances are you’ve found yourself in an emotionally difficult situation like divorce or custody. It might be “easiest” to just hire the first attorney you come by, or the one that charges the least. Ronique Bastine Robinson, founder of Bastine Law Group, says, “Proceed with caution. Your attorney should be your advocate, helping you navigate through the legal system and the legalese involved. That said, your attorney needs to be extremely knowledgeable in your area, and passionate about your case. For example, custody cases can be a game of chess, not checkers. Your attorney, or even better your team of attorneys, needs to be able to see the next move...and the next, and the next, and the next. A great attorney goes to bat for you again and again and again.”

Bastine Law Group has five in-house attorneys and an administrative staff...and it’s still growing! What does that mean for you? “It means your case gets different perspectives,” says Ronique. “It means you can be assigned a primary and secondary attorney, which is beneficial when the secondary is more economical and can take on parts of the case under the primary’s supervision. And it means our administrative staff takes care of the small stuff, like making copies of your files.” Do you know what “.law” at the end of an internet address means? It’s new, and it’s the only trusted domain for legal professionals. Ronique says, “A law firm with a .law domain has been verified that it’s regulated and licensed to practice law. And it’s another way to weed through the attorney maze!” Learn more about Bastine Law Group at www. thatsmylawyer.law.

A DOCTOR’S FITNESS JOURNEY A by Marie Page

uthor and local physician Dr. Liza Leal fields a lot of questions regarding staying healthy. For her own personal fitness, Dr. Leal has chosen Koko FitClub, the digital gym alternative. As summer approaches, we asked Dr. Leal for tips on getting healthy and getting fit. Here’s what she had to say:

• Set Goals. Start with a vision. Your daughter’s wedding, your upcoming cruise vacation or your doctor’s recommendations. Make the decision that your mind and body are ready to commit to a new better change. • Keep it Fun. Find an activity that is fun for you. I love Koko FitClub because it’s fun and engaging. • Add Friends. You are more likely to do something that you enjoy with friends. You are also more likely to continue doing something when you have a sense of commitment and accountability to your workout partner. • Be Open to Change and Integrate. Find ways to integrate fitness into activities you enjoy. • Find Peace. I utilize the recordings at KoKo FitClub during cardio for tranquility, stress relief and increased knowledge. • Start Now. Make the decision to do it NOW! No excuses make it happen.

“Koko FitClub’s ‘smart training’ is your personal coach that can get you started quickly and maximize your time and energy,” continues Dr. Leal. “It is programmed to your personal needs and can be modified for YOU. My patients and myself all have needs that are specific. I have rheumatoid arthritis, and my program works for me. Literally, my first goal was to take a step, learn to walk and then ultimately return to skiing. This ski season, the Koko FitClub personal trainers and my personal Smartraining program helped me reach my goal: over 15 miles of vertical skiing a day. It’s really all about YOU at Koko FitClub. Take the first step and check it out!” Read more about Dr. Leal’s personal journey in her latest book, “Live Well with Chronic Pain: A Guide to Taking the First Steps.”

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

ou might remember Stafford Police Officer Ann Marie Carrizales. Back in 2013, she took two bullets at point-blank range and still managed to chase down the alleged gunman. For years, even before the shooting, Ann Marie suffered from headaches, neck, back and heel pain. “Pain is a real problem in this profession,” says Ann Marie, now with the Meadows Place Police Department. “We wear heavy vests and artillery belts. My pain was affecting my sleep. My doctors tried different medications and they worked ok, but I don’t like taking meds. After the shooting, my headaches got a lot worse. I suffered from PTSD, and headaches are a symptom. Even nearly four years later, I felt my emotional health was better, but my physical was not. So I resolved to live with the pain. This was my life now.” But a speaking engagement with the Sugar Land Rotary and Exchange Clubs changed Ann Marie’s life. Dr. Steve Harris of Sugar Land Health Center was in the audience that day. “Afterward he shot me an email,” says Ann Marie. “He said he was thinking of ways he could help me. I researched him and found he has a great reputation for natural pain relief, so I gave it a try.” At her very first appointment, Dr. Harris did a manual treatment that moved Ann Marie to tears. “Suddenly, my headache was gone. It was kind of like when your ear has been clogged forever and it pops. Suddenly you think, ‘I can hear.’ I couldn’t remember the last time I didn’t have a headache. I really didn’t mean to cry in front of Dr. Harris, but I was so beside myself and overcome with emotion. That night I slept all night. My husband couldn’t believe I didn’t take any medication.” A believer, Ann Marie started regular treatment with Dr. Harris. “The decompression treatments have done wonders for my back and neck, and laser treatments have helped my heel pain. Dr. Harris knows the body, and he explains in great detail what he is going to do and why. And it all makes sense. I like to watch him. Sometimes he closes his eyes when he’s working. He says his hands become his eyes. You can just tell he is working from his heart and soul. My whole

family now sees him. What he’s doing is good for the body and excellent for wellness, and his office is a safe place for me.” “I now know I do not have to live in pain, and I’m shouting it from the rooftops. Every law enforcement officer should know about this. This profession is hard on the body, but Dr. Harris is brilliant. What a blessing he has been to me. He’s improved my quality of life.”

eggy and Bill Wissen have had remodeling work done in three different homes over the years. Their “go to” company? Lone Star Floors. “They just do a wonderful job,” says Peggy. “It’s why we use them again and again. They provide quality products and quality workmanship at fair prices. We always work with one of the owners, Ziad Mukhaimer. He’s hands-on and takes pride in his business and his work. When the Lone Star crews are at our house, Ziad always checks in. He’s at our house everyday.” The Wissen’s latest project included wood flooring, tile in the dining room, and redoing the fireplace in their recently purchased home. Peggy says, “The house had some wood flooring that was original in 2001. We wanted to continue that wood to

rooms that had flooring other than wood. Unfortunately, the old wood flooring was discontinued. Lone Star did a fantastic job matching it. We wanted tile in the dining room with an arced transition to the wood floor. The workmanship on that transition is really unbelievable. It looks so good! For the fireplace, we removed a white painted mantle and bricked to the ceiling...covering a window. Here, we really appreciated Ziad’s eye for what looks good. He recommended that in the hearth area we put in tile that matched the dining room. We are still waiting for the new mantle to come in, but the finished product is just excellent.” The Wissens own WissTech Enterprises, manufacturers of the world’s finest portable drinking fountains found on the sidelines of NFL, university and high school teams

We want to change that.” Advocates of Healthy Minds in Fort Bend County promotes mental health and focuses on how to overcome mental illness through education, advocacy, awareness, programs and activities. “The goal of our organization is to offer every resource available for anyone with mental illness,” says Evelyn. “This includes help for drug and alcohol abuse issues which many times comes from self-medicating for mental health issues. We also have a program where professionals talk to our school kids about suicide prevention. We want to explain to kids that the problems they are facing now are only temporary.” Other programs include helping health professionals learn more about counseling, and speaker engagements with the sole purpose of helping people through their suffering and explaining what resources are available. Evelyn’s also worked with veterans with PTSD, and has another large campaign in the works called “Step Up, Speak Up and Stop the Stigma.” Upcoming events for Evelyn’s organization include the “Family Fun Festival” on August 26th at Constellation Field. “There will be a 5K fun run for all ages, chili cook-off, live entertainment, and because it’s summer in Texas, almost every type of water activity! y day, Doctors Jane Lu and Scott Huang are award-winning orthodontists. But their Missouri City neighbors know them as a great couple, awesome parents, and just fun people to be around. Dr. Jane says, “We are blessed to be able to practice where we live. Scott and I love the warm hospitality of south Texas, and enjoy the diversity and culture of the Sugar Land and Missouri City communities.” This is home for Dr. Jane and Dr. Scott. Perhaps this is why the waiting area at Scott and Jane Orthodontics gives each person a sense of comfort. Patients sign in at a touchscreen and can hang out and play games at the iPad bar. Once in the chair, patients enjoy watching movies while getting their braces adjusted. It’s a cutting-edge office and—make no mistake—the orthodontic philosophies are just as innovative. Dr. Scott says, “We invest in some of the most advanced technology in the field to provide our patients with comfortable, efficient service.” The latest advancement at Scott and Jane Orthodontics is the investment in the iTero® Element™ scanner. Dr. Scott says, “Using this digital imaging system, we can get a clear and accurate picture of the mouth. It uses optical and laser scanning to achieve high precision and accuracy...which means we have an even greater capability to see exactly what’s going on in the mouth. Therefore, we can put together a precise orthodontic plan and show each patient the final outcome of their treatment. The iTero® Element™ is one of the best in its class. The patient’s experience is great, and most importantly, we are achieving a healthy, beautiful smile!” Scott and Jane Orthodontics is conveniently open till six on weekdays (6:30 on Thursday) and Saturday from nine till one...so the kids won’t have to miss school and you won’t have to take off work to get to an appointment. They take care of filing to your insurance company and in-house interestfree financing is available. A Dentist Worth Driving For

D

Come in as a patient and leave as a friend!

by Marie Page

ana Patterson’s family has been seeing Stafford area dentist Dr. Thomas Lomonte for more than ten years. “We actually heard of him through a family friend. We didn’t feel our previous dentist was doing a great job, and we were looking for higher quality.” “The first time we saw Dr. Lomonte, we loved it,” continues Dana. “He’s very personable, and his office is very relaxed. Even though we live in North Houston, we made him our family dentist. We just like it so much, we are willing to make the drive. Every six months, we go as family—me, my husband Greg, and our two children. Today they’re six and ten, but we started taking the kids when they were two. Dr. Lomonte would just let them sit in the chair and run it up and down like a little ride. Then they would sit and watch Greg and I get our teeth cleaned. Once it was time for them to start official cleanings...there was nothing weird about it. Dr. Lomonte had laid the groundwork in advance, and it made going to the dentist really easy for them.” Between Greg and Dana, they’ve had teeth whitened,

cavities filled, a crown and Invisalign with Dr. Lomonte. “Everything is just seamless and painless. My daughter was a thumbsucker until age six. Right before she turned seven, Dr. Lomonte put in a spacer to start to correct the damage from the thumb. My son was a two finger sucker, and Dr. Lomonte fixed the problem at 13 months with a plastic device placed over the two fingers. herri Lyday went to college to be an English teacher. “I got my degree, but I just wasn’t feeling it.” So Sherri spent 12 years in another job. During that time, her grandfather became very sick and passed away. “I was very close to him, so to center myself and feel closer to God, I started painting...my dining table, chairs, china cabinet and my kitchen cabinets. Each time my aunt called, I was painting. She said I was ‘feeding my soul.’” Then Sherri’s job downsized, and she was in need of a medical procedure. “I saw a Facebook post where someone needed their bathroom painted. I thought painting that bathroom would pay for my surgery, so I responded with pictures of my house.” The next day, Sherri had over 20 messages specifically asking for kitchen cabinet estimates. One of those messages was from Donnie Stavinoha of Stavinoha Interests, a local builder. He needed his kitchen cabinets stained, but admitted to not wanting to do it himself. “He gave me some cabinet doors to practice on and told me to get to work. I used every resource I could find, so I am definitely self-taught. He and his wife were extremely happy with my work. God absolutely put Donnie in my path!” That was Sherri’s first big break. Sherri took those sample doors and pictures of Donnie’s kitchen, created a portfolio and posted to Pecan Grove’s Small Business Wednesday...and she hasn’t had a break since! Her Feeding My Soul Facebook page now has over 3400 followers.

Feeding My Soul does painting, staining and faux finishing, specifically kitchen cabinets. “I love the kitchen. It’s the focal point of the house and the place where the family gathers. My clients are trusting me to create something warm and inviting that they can be proud of.” Sherri does 75% of the work herself and her crew is her family. From her husband Brandon, all the way down to her daughter, son, parents, two aunts and a family friend. Each one has a specific job, individually or as part of a crew, and has been trained to do it well. Her sister Stephanie is her clone. “She’s very artistic as well. She’s the only other one I trust to do my faux finishing.” Sherri’s work has been featured by General Finishes and was recently featured on the Pecan Grove Home Tour. She’s a preferred custom painter/faux finisher for several custom home builders, and works with realtors, designers, decorators and contractors throughout the Greater Houston Area. To ensure top quality, Sherri has spent hundreds of hours researching products and perfecting techniques; so much so that all the specialty paint and supply stores know her by name. Sherri uses only cutting-edge products and tools that get the top-notch, custom look everyone is looking for. “I may not be your least expensive option, but I truly believe you get what you pay for. Let’s see what I can do for you!” Feeding My Soul 281-761-5232 On Facebook: Feeding My Soul, LLC.

“Be confident in who you are, and you’ll be beautiful no matter what...” by Donna Reed

...that’s the mantra behind Nawal’s Bio Skin & Laser, owned and operated by Nawal and her daughter Amena. Nawal started her journey as a medspa client. “Years ago, a friend worked as a manager for another medspa, which is where I received treatment. When she started her own business, she asked me to work with her as a laser technician. I received the necessary training and my certification. I soon learned I enjoyed the work, and also enjoyed getting to know each of my clients.” Honesty is a large part of Nawal’s business model. “It’s one of the reasons I put my name first...before ‘Bio Skin & Laser,’” says Nawal. “I want clients to know that it’s me working here and no one else.” And if she doesn’t believe in a procedure for a client, she won’t do it. “If I’m going to do a treatment, I have to be sure it works, I have tried all the treatments. I hear lots of concerns regarding stretch marks. There’s nothing that will erase stretch marks. Trust me, if there were, I would have it. I feel the same about fillers. If someone comes into the spa and requests fillers, and I see what

she really needs is a facelift, I will say so. I know eventually the client will be upset with fillers because they will not achieve the look she wants. I would never sell anything to anyone that doesn’t work toward the desired results.” Nawal’s specialty is laser hair removal, where the magic happens using the Cynosure Elite MPX—one of the most powerful and versatile cosmetic laser machines on the market. It is FDAapproved and works on all skin types. This medspa also offers full body massages, chemical peels, Botox and fillers, cellulite treatment, varicose vein removal and skin resurfacing and rejuvenation. Nawal says, “We use the FDA-approved Cutera Excel V...only two of these lasers exist in this area and they’re excellent for rosacea.” Are you ready for exceptional results in a pampering, inviting and honest atmosphere? Music by Amy Sharp

here’s a reason we find comfort in songs and music,” says mental health advocate Teresa Reading, RN. “We hear things in the lyrics or the music that we identify with, and we feel understood...that someone else feels the same way. And if you play an instrument or sing you are using the whole brain, and the benefits are incredible. Music affects oxytocin levels-a neuropeptide known to play an important role in increasing bonding and trust between people. It lowers cortisol levels (the ‘stress’ hormone) and boosts the immune system. And music affects serotonin levels. Serotonin controls many parts of the body, including mood and sleep.” Teresa has been an active member of Mental Health America of Fort Bend County for the past 20 years. She works together with her husband neuropsychiatrist Dr. William H. Reading at their practice, where the couple concentrates on all aspects of psychiatric care, recovery of addictive diseases and NeuroStar Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). Their love of music and recognition of its importance is why they are longtime supporters of the Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra. Now in its 25th year and directed by Dr. Dominique Royem, the Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra strives to enrich our lives with live symphonic music presented by its volunteer members. Teresa serves as Vice President of the FBSO Board of Directors. Teresa says, “Music is a part of our everyday family life. We enjoyed attending FBSO performances, and first became active on the board in 1996. Life is different when the arts and music are at its center. It is enriching both personally and for the community.” For the final performance of their 25th season, The Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra will perform Carl Orff ’s masterwork “Carmina Burana” on May 21st at Stafford Centre. “It’s going to be a fantastic event,” says Teresa. “In addition to FBSO, The Fort Bend Boys Choir and local soloists will also be featured. ack in 2009, The American Cancer Society was looking for a way to bring a different funding event to Fort Bend County. They already had a ball and a golf tournament, this one needed to be more community driven. Behind the leadership of chairs Scott & KK West, Couture for the Cause was born. Truly community driven, Couture for the Cause takes a village. The highlight of every event is the fashion show, featuring couture models—many of whom are cancer patients or survivors—seizing their own opportunity to give back. This fashion show has been selflessly produced by Lenny Matuszewski with hair by Mark Anthony, his sister Eunice and the team of Milagro Salons, makeup by LaDonna Marie of Sugar Land Face & Body, and clothing by Dillards for many years. The location for the event is key. Most years the event has been held at a private residence. That means months of measuring and preparation, building a fashion show usually over your swimming pool, and then a party of 300-400 at your house. So many have donated their beautiful homes to host Couture for the Cause, as well as Johnson Development allowing it to be held at the Sienna Plantation Resort Lagoon in 2010 when the theme was Escape to Treasure Island. It’s the theme that keeps Couture for the Cause fresh each year. Past

themes have included La Dolce Vita—a fabulous Italian theme, A Night in Versaille—a fun masquerade party, and A White Haute Affair—an all white, elegant party. And each year, Lenny does a fantastic job creating the fashion show and connecting it to the theme. It’s really a can’t miss! This year’s event will be just as fabulous. The theme is “Garden Glitz,” and the event will be held at the Farmhouse in Richmond’s Harvest Green—Houston’s first farm-centric community by Johnson Development. Time honored favorites, including the fashion show and food stations from area restaurants are part of the plan. Plus a wine pull (make a donation, draw a cork, win a bottle of wine!), Big Board Auction, and “Baubles & Bubbles” raffle sponsored by Marlene and Samir Dharia of Plaza Jewelers. Visit the Couture for the Cause Facebook page and vote for your favorite 3D image of a custom Bauble to be made and raffled off the night of the event. 2017 chairs are Monique Bossett, Susan Ley-Novosad, Debbie Marcell, Michelle Royster, Margot Sayre and Gina Pizzini. The themes and the venues have changed over the years, but the cause remains the same: to raise funds to eradicate cancer. Join us for Couture for the Cause 2017!

Teeth NEVER

Take a Holiday!

by Olivia Cane re your kids ready for summer? The fun thing about summer is the delicious lack of routine—especially when you’re a kid. Kids have all the room they need to luxuriate for hours with the video game controller—and fly under mom’s radar about brushing their teeth. The problem is...without a routine, those hygiene chores rarely get done. “Your teeth never take a holiday,” says Dr. Shilpa Chandiwal, DDS, at Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry. “I have two kids of my own. I know firsthand how difficult it is to keep track of what they’re up to during summer vacation. Remember wetting the toothbrush to throw the parents off the scent? Who didn’t try that one?” “Summer can wreak havoc inside a child’s mouth. I regularly see the damage done when a week or two—or even a month or two—go by, and brushing has been infrequent at best. That’s why it’s important to do whatever works—star charts, rewards, etc.—in order to get those teeth brushed. And it’s also why bringing your kids in to see me when they’re young—as young as one year or when they have eight baby DENTIST LOCATIONS CARE teeth—is so important. I love my patients, and if they see me as a fun, benevolent authority figure, I can often get through to them the importance of brushing when a parent can’t. I call it laying the groundwork for a lifetime of healthy teeth and beautiful smiles. It goes a long way in establishing dental routines and expectations that withstand the lack of structure during school vacations, breaks and holidays!” Every month, Dr. Shilpa speaks to several school and daycare groups about the importance of oral hygiene. She talks about the importance of brushing twice a day, flossing, and a healthy diet. She encourages kids not to share food and drinks, even among family members. “I always impress upon children how important it is not to transfer germs person to person. The best reward is when the kids who heard me at school talk...educating their siblings and Dr. Shilpa Chandiwal, DDS family members about it.” 5300 Ranch Point Drive, Suite #B A Columbia University’s New York Presbyterian Hospital specialist in all areas of children’s Katy, TX 77494 dentistry, Dr. Shilpa isn’t just wise to the ways of pediatric dentistry, she is wise to the ways 713-234-1002 of your child. “One of the main components of pediatric training is child psychology,” says Dr. Shilpa. “From our office space design to our communication styles...we make every effort to 4907 Sandhill Dr., Suite E Sugar Land, TX 77479 make dental visits pleasant for our little patients.” Ready to give your child a lifetime of beautiful smiles? Concierge Services Physical Therapy by Amy Sharp

K

aren Wood, PT knew she wanted to be a physical therapist the moment she read a short blurb about physical therapy in her high school counselor’s office. “It was everything I wanted,” says Karen. “It uses the brain, it’s physical, you’re around lots of people, and because of the constant changes and advancements in medicine, you’re always learning something new.” Dr. Wood opened her own practice in 1980 after working as both a director and regional director for corporate physical therapy operations. “I wanted to go back to treating patients. When I opened my practice, my goal was to never become that big. I wanted to spend the rest of my career personally treating patients.” At her office in an old railroad station in the heart of Sugar Land, Dr. Wood focuses on orthopedics. “I treat backs, necks, shoulders, elbows, knees, hips...most any issues that require recovery from an accident or injury.” Dr. Wood takes great pride in being independent...she’s not governed by a hospital or any other entity. “It’s the difference between corporate and concierge. I have the freedom to do what I need to do to help my patients. They get more with me. I truly believe more personalized service and more individualized treatment is vital to effective treatment.” After spending her childhood in Puerto Rico, Dr. Wood graduated from Texas Woman’s University and earned her PhD at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. She attends continuing education courses year round to keep her practice up to date. Dr. Wood and her husband, local physician Dr. Alan Reichman, have four adult children and love doting on their five grandchildren. As a couple they enjoy cycling, tennis, snow skiing and ballroom dancing. “I’ve always been a dancer,” says Dr. Wood. “So before I married him, he had to learn to dance. Not learning was a deal breaker!”

Have You Been to the Flower Bar?

W

by Amy Sharp

hen Alexandra Zody needed one college credit hour, she did a floral design internship with a wedding and large event florist. “I thought maybe it would be my passion. But the job wasn’t very hands-on, and I decided I would do something else.” So Alexandra worked in a Washington lavender field for the summer. “They had a cutting garden, and I loved making arrangements with their flowers....it was organic floral. Then I got a job at an amazing organic floral shop in Dallas, and they taught me everything I know.” Life brought Alexandra back home to Sugar Land. But when she looked for a job, she couldn’t find anything that was her organic style. Together with her mom Tricia, she looked for a shop to buy. In that brainstorming, the Flower Bar idea came to life. “It was a God-thing,” says Tricia. “The idea just came. We would bring people together and teach them to arrange flowers. And then we knew...this was right for Sugar Land. We found our location and six weeks later opened our doors.” At Deep Roots TX —a nod to the Zody’s deep Sugar Land roots and their understanding of the need to be deeply rooted—this mother-daughter team provides full-service pickup and delivery of organic arrangements. “Every arrangement is different and made to fit the occasion and personality,” says Tricia. “Our flowers are fresh and sourced from Holland, South America, California and Florida. And we do not use the floral foam that is carcinogenic and toxic. We are more holistic, we recycle, and we often donate a portion of our proceeds to the American Cancer Society.” 30 ~ UPCLOSE ~ May 2017

And the Flower Bar? It’s fun! Reserve a seat, bring food and drinks, and Alexandra gives stepby-step instructions for arranging a beautiful floral design you take home. “We see so much love, camaraderie and encouragement at our Flower Bars,” says Tricia. “At the end, it really feels like we’ve done something. It’s very gratifying.” The Deep Roots Loose Leaf Flower Bar is also available daily for clients to stop in and create their own arrangements, no reservation required. WHAT does it take

to get a plumber to your door? I by Olivia Cane

f you’ve ever called Alan’s Plumbing, you already know to expect three things: prompt service, a fair price, and a job done by professionals who have a long track record of getting it right. You probably even know it was Jennifer Burkhalter who answered your call, master plumber Alan Burkhalter’s wife. But did you know Jennifer has her own office team? “That’s right,” says Jennifer. “I couldn’t do what I do without Scarlett Klein, Cathy McFarland and Alan’s mom, Lena Burkhalter.” The Burkhalter’s have known Scarlett’s dad for a long time. Scarlett graduated from UT in 2015 and is working toward a career in TV and film. In the meantime, she’s helping Jennifer part-time with invoicing at Alan’s Plumbing. Cathy has been the Alan’s Plumbing CPA since they opened 21 years ago! “She’s

become a personal friend and is a part of our family,” says Jennifer. And Jennifer’s mother-in-law Lena answers the phones twice a week. “Lena took over the reins back in 2011 when I had cancer,” says Jennifer. “She stepped in when we needed her the most. She’s scaled back quite a bit now, but you’ll still find her answering phones a couple times a week!” With this team of women, Alan’s Plumbing is a lean, mean, efficient plumbing machine. But Jennifer and her team, Alan, their sons Beau and Luke, Alan’s brother Chris, Jeff Johnson and apprentices Jaime and Trevor have other reasons for wanting to provide you with the best service. They belong to your Fort Bend community. They shop at the same stores you do. Their children attended the same schools. That automatically makes you more

than a customer. That makes you a neighbor and a friend. “We want to save you money,” explains Jennifer. “A leaky toilet wastes up to 200 gallons of water a day, which comes to about $70 a month! Even a leaky faucet can cost you up to $200 a year. No one should have to literally flush their money away. And no one likes surprise expenses at the end of the job. We are honest, upfront, and we get the job done right the first time. Plus, we only focus on Fort Bend. We keep our business and our crews in the Fort Bend area.” Alan adds, “We couldn’t do our job as plumbers without Jennifer and her team. They’re the reason our crews show up at your door.” Alan’s Plumbing
