Team Approach to Care
Keeping young ath Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine’s Team Approach to Care and even the specific ways that discus throwing puts stress on the knee,” said Gabe Sr. “I’ve been involved in track and field for 35 years, and Dr. Sitter’s technical knowledge was so impressive! I asked him, ‘Are you a doctor or a coach?’” Sitter performed Gabriel’s ACL repair surgery in September 2016, and the young track and field star completed extensive physical therapy under the guidance of physical therapist Fred Sampang, who worked with Sitter to develop a program designed to strengthen Gabriel’s knee for the rigors of his sport. Just six months post-surgery, Gabriel broke the Texas state high school discus record with a throw of 215’, 2 5/8”. In May, at the state championship meet, he won the 6A state title in discus and the silver medal in shot put. In the fall, he’s headed to Texas A&M University where he’ll join one of the most successful track programs in the country – with his sights set on the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

hen a young athlete gets injured, parents are faced with a tough decision: Who can we trust to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment?
The Oladipos family credits Sitter and his team – including Fort Bend ISD Hightower High School athletic trainer Aimee Marotta and Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital athletic training resident Marines Perez-Torres who works with Hightower High School athletics, with getting Gabriel healthy again.
Fortunately, student athletes in Fort Bend County have access to the same specialists as the pros – Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Sugar Land.
Elite athletes, elite surgeons When Hightower High School student, Gabriel Oladipo Jr., was diagnosed with an ACL tear that required surgery, his father Gabe Sr. – a former college and professional football player himself – did his homework before selecting a surgeon. The stakes were high. Gabriel was one of the nation’s top high school discus throwers and shot putters, and he had a fantastic opportunity to earn a college scholarship – provided that his knee was treated properly. After speaking with area physicians, coaches, parents and even some former professional athletes, the Oladipo family decided that orthopedic surgeon Timothy Sitter, M.D., was the best choice. “From our first meeting, I was blown away by Dr. Sitter’s knowledge, not just about medicine, but about athletics in general 2 ~ UPCLOSE ~ July 2017

hletes in the GAME Help on the road to recovery Dulles High School volleyball player Bria Merchant was still being treated for a nerve entrapment that had caused her shoulder muscles to atrophy – under the care of Ashvin Dewan, M.D. – when she broke her tibia during a match. Dewan performed surgery on Bria, placing a metal rod in her leg for support. After surgery, Dewan worked with physical therapist Marie Charpentier, Fort Bend ISD athletic trainer Bryant Spencer, Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital athletic training resident YaQuanda Williams and Dulles physical therapist Kim Wright to design a rigorous rehab program that enabled Bria to return to the court this spring. “Dr. Dewan did everything he could to make sure that Bria was progressing properly,” said Bria’s mother Rafie. “At one point, when Bria was anxious to play, he told us that she was not physically ready and she needed additional therapy to strengthen her leg. I appreciated that; he knew what was best for her in the long run.” Today, Bria is preparing for her senior year at Dulles and going through the college recruitment process. “Whenever Bria got discouraged, the staff at Houston Methodist encouraged her,” said Rafie. “The mental part of rehab is just as important as the physical, and everyone at Houston Methodist supported Bria and helped her stay focused.”
Teamwork makes a difference Travis High School baseball player Dylan Cooper wasn’t sure exactly when he hurt
his knee. But in early June 2016, an MRI revealed a bucket tear of his meniscus. Orthopedic surgeon Mark Maffet, M.D., performed the surgical repair of Dylan’s knee in late June. After several months of rehab – under the direction of Maffet, Houston Methodist physical therapist Ciara Burgi and Houston Methodist athletic trainer Michelle Hiett at Travis High School – Dylan was able to resume playing for his club in November and for Travis this past spring. “Dr. Maffet is a great surgeon and he led us through the entire process,” said Dylan’s mother Melissa. “Plus, the coordination and communication between Dr. Maffet, Ciara and Michelle really helped Dylan stay on track with his rehab and played a big part in his recovery.” Today, Dylan’s knee is back to 100 percent function and he is playing summer ball in preparation for his senior year at Travis. Houston Methodist Sugar Land’s unique partnership with Fort Bend ISD places skilled athletic trainers at each district high school with direct connections to the sports medicine specialists at Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine.

Circulation, Lymphedema,
Hope and
L
ymphedema is a chronic, progressive disease that can be debilitating. Lymphedema develops when poor lymph drainage allows fluid to build up in an affected arm or leg. The earlier it is diagnosed, the more likely it can be controlled and possibly reversed. The causes of lymphedema can be multiple, but the most common are: cancer, radiotherapy, trauma, infections, and venous insufficiency. For many years it was thought that the heart, arteries, capillaries, venules and veins were the only components of the circulatory system. Although the lymphatic system has been known to exist for centuries, it has only been recently that experts agree that it is an important component of the circulatory system. Simply stated, the heart pumps the blood all over the body with oxygen and nutrients that are delivered to the cells, then blood with waste products and carbon dioxide is returned to the heart through the veins. About 1% of the blood fluid that passes through the capillaries stays in between the cells or interstitial space. All that fluid is returned by the lymphatic vessels. When the lymphatic vessels do not work (for whatever reason), that fluid accumulates in between the cells and produces edema or lymphedema. The diagnosis for lymphedema is done by physical exam, ultrasound and imaging of the lymphatic vessels through very special techniques. The treatment includes complete decongestive therapy (CDT) that is achieved mainly through manual lymph drainage by a Certified Lymphedema Therapist, compression therapy with compression bandaging, compression garments and pneumatic pumps, exercise, weight loss, and skin care. It is important to understand that lymphedema management is a TEAM EFFORT and active patient participation is the key to a successful team. Dr. Ulises Baltazar would like to be a part of your lymphedema management TEAM to address circulatory issues and support improved venous activity for your best possible outcome. He is a highly regarded vein specialist with extensive experience working with conditions resulting from issues of the circulatory system. Dr. Baltazar is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery, and a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. If you suspect you have lymphedema, or you have already been diagnosed, Dr. Baltazar says, “The road ahead is not easy, but there is hope. For the best results in managing lymphedema, the patient needs to be committed and carefully follow instructions in order to get better. And most importantly, never, ever give up!”

Spreading the Love and Confidence Now in Katy with an in-house Dermatologist! by Marie Page

ay back when, a beautiful young intern in Internal Medicine from Mexico City met a guy from Kentucky at a chance meeting in the Methodist Cafeteria. Fast forward nearly 20 years and today that couple—Dr. Eric Humble and Dr. Lin Humble—has established the pre-eminent facility for personal transformation through the medical arts of plastic surgery and skin correction techniques. Dr. Humble’s philosophy of care is simple: “Every patient should walk out of our office feeling confident...because confidence changes lives!” At Sugar Land Face & Body, each member of the team is brought onboard after rigorous scrutiny that not only assesses professional expertise, but also mines for the human component of genuine care. And now—with a second location in Katy—Sugar Land Face &
Body is expanding their array of professional services with the addition of dermatologist, Dr. Filiberto Cedeno Laurent. Dr. Cedeno Laurent was the first Mexican accepted into the Immunology PhD program at Harvard Medical School. His interest in malignancies and melanomas peaked in the Department of Dermatology at Harvard, and he decided to stay in dermatology. After a five year dermatology residency at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, Dr. Cedeno Laurent joins Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery. “I’m very excited about bridging dermatology and plastic surgery,” says Dr. Cedeno Laurent. “It’s a combination not fully explored. I will be practicing the full spectrum...children to the elderly and cosmetic and skin products to non-
invasive and invasive procedures. We have the most cutting-edge technology available, and nothing here is cookiecutter. Plus, I’m a conservative doctor. I don’t push procedures and I always work with your budget.” Dr. Cedeno Laurent speaks fluent Spanish. He and his wife Marcela are thrilled to move their family to this area. “We’ve spent a lot of time in the Northeast...we are ready for warmer weather!” When you look in the mirror, do you like what you see? “Rejuvenation is about making your vision of yourself a reality,” says Dr. Humble. “So that you can enjoy your life to the fullest. We invite you to drop in anytime and see our warm and inviting facilities. And please join me in welcoming Dr. Cedeno Laurent to our family!”

anessa Alvarado learned her son Sebastian had the extremely rare Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome while he was still in utero. Because of this condition, Sebastian was born in Houston instead of his hometown of Ingleside, near Corpus. Vanessa says, “After Sebastian was born, he had two heart surgeries and a G-Tube placed. He needed a medication to help keep his blood vessels open. Through my insurance, that medication would cost $5000 a month. I literally could not afford to take care of my kid. The hospital case manager called a large pharmacy, and they recommended we try Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. Campbell’s was able to make the medication for $65 a month!” After months in the hospital, Vanessa and Sebastian were ready to move home. “I panicked,” says Vanessa. “There’s a good chance Sebastian will need this medication for the rest of his life, and there’s no Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy in Ingleside. I spoke with Dr. Omar Alkazzaz at Campbell’s, and he offered to mail Sebastian’s medication to me. So that’s what we’ve been doing. At times I’ve almost run short. It’s liquid and Sebastian takes less than one mL at a time...so it’s sometimes difficult to see how much is left. But I just call Campbell’s and they overnight it. Everyone there is so helpful!” Sebastian is now one-year-old and Vanessa is working on feeding Sebastian by mouth instead of through the G-Tube. “Dr. Omar offered to flavor his medicine for me. Sebastian loves every flavor we’ve tried, and taking his medicine orally is really helping him learn to swallow. Campbell’s truly has Sebastian’s best interest at heart. A Lap Pool Dream Brought to Life
M
by Amy Sharp
ary always wanted a lap pool. So when she did a complete down-to-the-studs remodel of her Houston Heights home, a lap pool was part of her plan. “I knew what I wanted,” says Mary. “A dark and moody old world Spanish glam pool. It had to be mission style—no curves. And I wanted a sun shelf for my 14-year-old dog, my best friend.” The challenge in the Heights is space. Mary’s yard is tiny. One of her pool bids was from Bratton Pools, an independently owned pool company she found on Nextdoor. “They had great references, and they were my lowest bid. Plus, it was just a gut feeling that they were the right choice. Not once did owner Mike Bratton try to upsell me. My sister—who is perhaps more cynical than me—was at the meeting and agreed that he was my contractor.” Before starting construction, Bratton Pools used 3D design software to design Mary’s pool. “I described what I wanted, and Mike translated my ideas to real stuff,” says Mary. “For every recommendation Mike made, I researched his choice. He was right on everything. And Mike never thought my ideas—like the sun shelf for my dog—were crazy. He just made sure my ideas happened. I work with a lot of engineers, and they came up with many questions about pool equipment. Mike was very responsive to these billions of questions, and again, never upsold me.

In fact, there were times I was trying to upsell myself and he convinced me I didn’t need whatever it was I was looking at!” Bratton Pools brought Mary’s vision to life as a geometric pool with red brick coping, Caribbean Cream spray deck, Spanish tile, Midnight Sea pebble plaster, energy efficient lighting and a variable speed pool pump. “There were no problems, and they never varied from the budget. They always showed up when they said they would be here, and everyone worked really well together. It was a challenge...they had to take down the fence and wedge the pool in there. I trusted Mike and never had that ‘Is he ever coming back?’ feeling. Bratton Pools was totally the right choice to build my pool. We made a deal and that was the deal. Never any upselling.” “I’ve had a lot of work done on this house with many different contractors. This is probably the easiest project I’ve done. Everything was on autopilot. I don’t have a single complaint. My new pool is high quality and exactly what I wanted. It feels good, it looks good and people love it!” Bratton Pools ~ 281-988-7700 www.brattonpools.com

aleigh and Bette Bailes had not done resistance training in five years. “We had lost a lot of muscle tone,” says Raleigh. “In the past, I had both worked out with trainers and tried to do it myself. What I found was...I just don’t push myself as I need to.” Bette read an article about SuperSlow Zone Sugar Bette Land, and the couple decided to give it a try. “We were attracted to SuperSlow Zone because it’s an intimate setting with one-on-one strength sessions and state of the art equipment. We each did the complimentary consultation and workout with co-owner Sheryl Roche...and we were hooked!” After two months of twice a week personalized workouts with a SuperSlow Zone instructor, Raleigh and Bette are both very pleased. “We can tell a remarkable difference in muscle tone and strength,” says Raleigh. “We each schedule workouts when it’s convenient for us. I’m usually in my work clothes, and if I start to get hot, they put a fan on me. The workouts are 20 minutes and you work hard...but there’s no need for a shower after. We complement our strength sessions with walks in our neighborhood, and the results are just fantastic.” As Raleigh and Bette discovered, all SuperSlow Zone sessions are one-on-one with a certified instructor in a quiet, elegant studio equipped with medical-grade equipment. “Clients come to us because they don’t like the traditional exercise answers,” says Ken Roche, Sheryl’s husband and SSZ co-owner. “We bring a new perspective on wellness ranging from exercise to bone health. It’s exciting because we are changing people’s lives. For the Strength Program you only need two sessions a week. We safely build muscle and increase your resting metabolism, allowing the body to burn more calories even at rest.” SuperSlow Zone’s unique approach is beneficial for rehabilitation, medical strength building, weight loss, and general exercise. New SuperSlow Zone General Manager and avid tennis player Maeve King adds, “As a certified instructor, my role is to motivate, enable and make exercise an energizing and rewarding experience. I’m passionate about both proper technique and injury prevention. I love to see my clients achieve their personal health and fitness goals.” SuperSlow Zone clientele range from those that don’t really like to exercise, to those that may not have exercised in a while (or ever!), to those who look forward to exercising but are looking for a quality experience with results in the least amount of time. DUCT DYNASTY Answering The Call

un Factoid: Phil Robertson, bearded patriarch of A&E’s hit show “Duck Dynasty,” gave up a promising NFL career with the Washington Redskins because it interfered with duck season. If that’s not dedication to being true to who you are and what you love...what is? Eleven seasons later and quite a few million dollars richer, Robertson proves that if you do what you love, the money will follow. And the same truth applies to Fort Bend’s own “Duct Dynasty,” Jackson Air and Heat. Brian Jackson is the son of trailblazing founder Johnny Jackson and now himself the proud father of up-and-comers Brian and Blake Jackson. Brian might be safely referred to as “Duct Commander.” Brian’s father Johnny grew up in Oklahoma as one of 11 children. Back in the fifties, not many families could afford air conditioning, and Johnny’s family was no different. He cooled off the way people did back then: going to Saturday matinees in the old popcorn palaces that had air conditioning—a decal that was proudly displayed out front and was a prime motivating factor for
Olivia Cane people to buy tickets. When Johnny grew up, he served his country as an airplane mechanic, earning himself a reputation for being able to fix anything. Then he started his own family, and when his civilian employer, National Cash Register, sent him to Sugar Land, he quickly realized how badly the area needed reliable air conditioning. He launched Jackson Air and Heat in 1982 and hit the ground running. Having grown up in the business and learning everything he knows from his father, Brian Jackson understands the importance of ducks— er, ducts—which deliver cool air in the summer and heat in the winter. But leaking ducts will make your system less efficient, and more dust means less comfort inside your home. Scheduling an appointment for Jackson Air and Heat to come check your ductwork and tune up your air conditioning unit will give you the greatest “blast for your duck”...er, buck! ASK MARGIE
The Lawyer Who Cares THIS MONTH’S TOPIC:
Elder Care and Elder Law
by Amy Sharp s individuals move into their “Golden Years,” it is important for them to not only have a will and provide for their family after death, it’s also important to have medical and financial powers of attorney to provide for and protect their needs as they age and become less able to manage for themselves. The choice of attorney to counsel them through this process is crucial, just like their choice of medical advisor. Dr. Liza Leal, who has been practicing family medicine for almost 20 years, says, “We recommend our patients call on Fort Bend Attorney Margie Connolly to help bring peace of mind and offer advice during a very vulnerable time in their lives. I look at it as helping our family of patients to preserve their legacy. These individuals need someone who is available, accessible, understanding and knowledgeable. Killing Skin Cancer...No Surgery Necessary
W
by Amy Sharp
hen Robert McCarty requires medical attention, he does his homework. “First, I look for a doctor that’s qualified to take care of my illness and communicates with me both my problem and the plan. Then I look at how accessible they are. This includes overbooking, difficulty in rescheduling appointments, and traffic to and from my home. Finally, I only want to see people who care about me personally. I’ve found all of these things at Rosenberg Dermatology...a mere five miles from my house!” Robert was looking for a dermatologist because he knew he had some problems. “My first evaluations of Rosenberg Dermatology were a visit to get some things frozen, and they took care of my scalp psoriasis.” Then biopsies revealed Robert had squamous skin cancer on his chest and wrist. “By that time, I knew I liked this place. They gave me a choice: operate and surgically remove the cancer or a non-surgical option. I’ve had two heart valve replacements and take blood thinners...so I bleed easily. No surgery was the obvious choice!” Robert’s skin cancer is being treated with superficial radiation therapy by Radiation Therapist, Pauline Lausser. Pauline says, “With this treatment, we’re not taking a bazooka to kill Robert’s cancer. We’re only giving him the exact amount of superficial radiation he needs.” Robert receives treatment three times a week. He’s at the office less than 20 minutes each time. “Now I’m even more glad I’m here and not downtown,” says Robert. “I would rather die with my problem than drive in that dangerous traffic three times a week!” Certified Physician Assistant Celia Vaclavik adds, “SRT was a good choice for Robert, both because he’s on blood thinners and because the skin on the chest is thin...so there’s not a lot of skin left for closure. SRT is also more cosmetically pleasing because it doesn’t scar. It’s a great option for the face, nose and ears as well.” Robert has seen a lot in his life. He was a POW during the Korean conflict and sought out the best surgeon in the country for his two open heart surgeries. Today, he’s grateful for Rosenberg Dermatology. “I can’t say enough great things about the people here. I recommend Rosenberg Dermatology all the time!”

A KW (Keller Williams) Southwest Experience
J
The Schultz’s Story
oni and Daniel Schultz were trying to sell their house, but they weren’t having much luck finding a real estate agent who worked well for them...until they met KW (Keller Williams) Southwest agent Audra O’Neal. “Our first agent didn’t work out. After about three months with only a handful of low offers, we ended pulling the house off the market,” says Joni. “Audra put our house on the market and sold it within six days.” With 18 years in the real estate business, Audra sold the Schultz’s on her professional and knowledgeable skills about the market, plus the fact that “you could tell Audra really loves her job and does her homework.” “She came to our first meeting prepared to sell,” says Joni. At that meeting, the Schultz’s agreed minor changes needed to be made. “We re-staged, took new photos, spruced up the backyard, and set the table to make it look like a home and not a listing,” says Audra. “I also suggested to Joni she raise the price. When a home is underpriced, it tells me it was not the price of the buyers in the neighborhood.” “That was refreshing...hearing this good news,” says Joni. “The neighborhood where we lived had a variety of pricing. When Audra looked at the neighborhood and the pricing, she cupped her hands together (to show a small amount) and said, ‘This is your competition.’ Before Audra, we felt like we were chasing people to buy!”
by Donna Reed
Even though Joni knew what she wanted in regards to a sale, she was surprised to learn a few new selling points. “One of Audra’s ideas—which I thought was brilliant—was when she put little note cards throughout the house. When a buyer’s agent or the buyer walked through, they could envision another way a room could look. For example, she suggested the dining room could work perfectly as an office. Those cards informed people about the house, sometimes beyond what they could see—like pointing out the recently installed HVAC unit—making all the difference. They really helped potential buyers have a vision. And because Audra put value on our home, we had an offer the first day it was on the market.” Audra admits her best qualities for selling homes can be summed up with, “I love to market, and I love to negotiate. We make sure we do exactly what the client wants. Joni is an amazing client—she’s very detailed and knows what she wants. It made my job so easy because I could go after her goals for her!” What are your goals when it comes to buying or selling a home? End of July...Watch for Date! Meet Jen Widerstrom, trainer on Dr. Oz and The Biggest Loser DJ, food, drinks and cryo specials everywhere... this is a can’t miss!
When Joseph Uduma was a senior at Kennesaw State University in Georgia, this Exercise Science major was asked to write his final research paper on cryotherapy. “I was pretty skeptical,” says Joseph. “But I figured I could put some words together and call it a day.” However, the more Joseph dug into the topic, the more he became intrigued. Cryotherapy uses low temperatures (similar to “icing”) to help reduce inflammation, speed up recovery, increase energy, improve skin conditions, boost your metabolism, aid with weight loss, and improve sleep. With this method, the cold causes enough vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels) to allow new cells to grow and injured cells to heal. “I have
a lot of family and friends in the NFL, boxing, rugby, and other sports,” says Joseph. “I realized cryotherapy could help them recover faster, and return to play...instead of all the ibuprofen and hours in physical therapy.” To further his research, Joseph tried whole body cryotherapy for himself. “After the first 30 seconds, I wanted to get out of there. I thought it could not possibly be that cold in Georgia! But then things started to changed. I felt relief. I felt alert and calm at the same time. It felt good.” And Joseph was hooked. “I went twice a day. Before my workouts for an adrenaline rush, and after for the calming effect.” Graduation on the horizon, this Fort Bend County native wanted to bring cryotherapy home. “My primary goal was to make cryotherapy affordable for everyone.” And the rest is history! At iCRYO Sugar Land you’ll find whole body cryotherapy, localized cryotherapy, cryo facials, compression therapy, and an infrared sauna where you can sweat out 500-800 calories and toxins. Do it all as often as you like (including whole body freezes twice a day!) for one low monthly price. Don’t need it that often? Many pricing options are available, including single session pricing. Joseph also offers discounts to anyone with a local area gym membership and military personnel. “We have a client with PTSD. He was surprised by how calm he is during cryotherapy treatment. We want to offer this opportunity to all military personnel at a great price.” In addition to cryotherapy and all of its benefits, iCRYO Sugar Land is your one-stop-shop to getting healthy. Pain?
by Amy Sharp
ugar Land native Dr. Jake Price originally wanted to be a physical therapist. “I grew up in sports and wanted to stay in the sports field. While I was in the pre-physical therapy program at Sam Houston State, I did an internship with a chiropractor. That redirected my interest. I felt with chiropractic I could promote maintaining an active lifestyle. It was more hands-on and less regimented. I felt I was able to do more pain relief and get people moving quicker.” After earning a degree in Exercise Science, this Clements High graduate attended Texas Chiropractic College. Today, Dr. Price specializes in movement-based exercise at local Simon Spine. “I treat both individuals who experience pain often, and those that experience pain after exercise,” says Dr. Price. “It’s pain with movement.” Does getting out of bed hurt? It shouldn’t. The doctors at Simon Spine utilize the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA). “These tests show us how much you are compensating for the things your body can’t do. We can often predict and prevent injuries. Did you know 30% of adults cannot roll over properly? We reteach basic movements. It improves athletic ability, and if you’re already in pain...doing motions correctly can help you find relief.” One of the first FMS-based programs was the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI)—an exercise regimen specific to golf. Simon Spine founder and TPI certified trainer Dr. Jose Simon says, “With TPI, it’s a golfer’s movement assessment. We are looking at a player’s ability to get into specific positions and increasing stability or mobility of specific joints related to the golf swing. Titleist was at the forefront of FMS. Today, we apply these same principles to our six-year-old cheerleaders, our weekend warriors, and our professional athletes. We fix the mechanics that are causing you pain (or will cause you pain in the future!).” Look for the Simon Spine doctors this running season as they share the benefits of FMS with local running club, Fort Bend Fit. In addition to his work at Simon Spine, Dr. Price is also a trainer and coach at BNKR CrossFit. Dr. Price adds, “Whether it means training for their next marathon or playing with their grandchildren, my main goal is to return people to doing what they love.”

A Custom-Designed Wedding Band...Ten Years Later! by Amy Sharp
W
hen Andrea and Stan Tripp got married ten years ago, they had a symbolic engagement ring made. “Since we’re kind of ‘square’ people, the center stone is a square. We each brought two kids into the marriage, and the four decent-sized diamonds on the engagement band represent our four children. When it came to our wedding, it was hard to find a matching wedding band. So for ten years, I just wore the engagement ring as my wedding ring.” “We always wanted to add a wedding band,” continues Andrea. “But we were not sure how to match it. We had known Alex Dharia (Head of Marketing at Plaza Jewelers) forever. Alex—or A.D. as we call him—went to Clements High School with my son. One day we were talking about the wedding band, and Alex said Plaza Jewelers could make one to match. And they did...perfectly!” Since it was also their ten year anniversary, the Tripps decided to have a ten year anniversary band made in addition to a wedding band. The process of building custom jewelry at Plaza Jewelers is simple: The in-house designer uses CAD/CAM (computer-aided
design and computer-aided manufacturing) to create a setting you love. Then they make a 3D wax rendering of your design...and if you still love it, they build it. “That’s exactly how it happened,” says Andrea. “I saw the mold, approved it...and the rings went together perfectly. They look like they were always supposed to be there. It’s just right...exactly what I wanted.” Andrea and Stan’s children are grown now, and they shop for their girlfriends at Plaza Jewelers. “When you walk in the store, everyone there treats you like you’re family,” says Andrea. “Alex’s dad Samir (founder of Plaza Jewelers) is so sweet and fun. And the store is really big with something for everyone. Stan’s a big watch guy, and he was amazed at their watch offerings!” With an extensive selection of wedding bands and engagement rings, plus a large selection of watches and other exquisite jewelry creations, Plaza Jewelers truly has something for everyone. ationally recognized local photographer Alisa Murray met local orthodontists Dr. Jane Lu and Dr. Scott Huang of Scott and Jane Orthodontics when she photographed their daughter Olivia...and they’ve been friends ever since. Alisa says, “I knew my kids, Victoria Ann and James Edward, would need braces. I myself had braces when I was younger back in North Carolina. Twenty years ago my bottom retainer popped out and my teeth moved. I’m on TV a lot, and I didn’t like that I had crooked teeth. I like things symmetrical. Dr. Scott said he could fix them and placed traditional braces on my bottom teeth. In fact, Victoria Ann, James Edward and I were all in braces at the same time...and we’re all finished. The kids’ teeth are gorgeous!” “My husband Brian had never had braces as a kid, and he needed them,” continues Alisa. “We figured everybody else has straight teeth...so now—at almost 50 years old—Brian is wearing clear braces. I have no worries that Dr. Scott and Dr. Jane will take care of him. A year ago we added son-in-law Justin Smith to our family. I don’t know if he needs braces, but if he does, I know who to recommend!” Dr. Scott and Dr. Jane are both board-certified orthodontists with over 20 years combined experience. Selected by patients, peers, and colleagues for the elite “America’s Top Dentist,” this husband/wife practice has been selected “Best Orthodontist in Fort Bend” multiple times. Your comfort as a patient and state of the art treatment options are among their highest priorities. “A straight smile is a lifetime investment,” says Dr. Scott. “And with that in mind, Jane and I do everything we can to make orthodontic treatment convenient, affordable, and fun. We offer everyone, young and old, a free-of-charge consultation. We take digital pictures and x-rays and view them on a smartboard with you. We can draw directly on these images of your teeth from every angle, showing you what needs to be done. And with this comprehensive view upfront, if treatment is required, we can tell you both the total cost and length of time it should take.” “We just adore them,” adds Alisa. “They handle their patients like I handle my clients...like they’re part of my family. ore than 25 years ago, Tracy Shivers was in the market for a new dentist. “I had an experience with my previous dentist that I was not happy about. We lived in Stafford at the time, and Dr. Lomonte’s office was close to our home. My wife actually saw him first and had a wonderful experience. Then I started seeing him, and soon he was the dentist for our two daughters....the whole family and all had great experiences.” “Dr. Lomonte is a craftsman,” continues Tracy. “He’s very good at what he does. You name it and he’s done it for me. I started with cleanings, but I’ve trusted him to do root canals, a crown, extractions and most recently implants. When one thinks of a dentist, one usually thinks of pain. It’s never been that way with Dr. Lomonte. It’s always pleasant. Even with the implants—I had two done at the same time and need another one soon—there was no pain. Again, the best way to describe him is a craftsman. The implants are in the back of my mouth and you would never know it. They’re wonderful. I appreciate that Dr. Lomonte always takes ownership of what he’s doing, makes sure I’m comfortable, and always follows up. It’s good stuff...both he and his staff really care.” Dr. Lomonte has been operating in that same Stafford location on Murphy Road for more than 35 years. His patients are his friends. “He’s Come in an avid fisherman,” says Tracy. “He loves to tell me how he caught the big one and show pictures. as a patient I’m not a fisherman, but I love listening to his stories. and leave He’s a good person, a family man and I think he’s awesome. as a friend!
