or 25 years, Leonetti Graphics has been creating custom tshirts and specialty products—including screen printing, embroidery, signs and banners—for businesses and individuals alike. Founded by Jenni Leonetti and her late husband Donald, Leonetti Graphics is proud to play a huge part in our Fort Bend community. And in resounding sentiment...the community feels the same about Leonetti Graphics! Michael Garfield, better known as the “High-Tech Texan,” has known the family at Leonetti for at least a dozen years. “I’m a marketing guy, and I turn to them for my tshirts and to help grow my business. They’re really creative when it comes to creating slogans and looks. They help me realize my ideas and goals.” Remember when the Sugar Land Skeeters won the championship last year? Leonetti Graphics—the official apparel provider—was there in a pinch...making sure they had championship gear the next day! Get your car serviced at Slater’s Kwik Kar and you can’t help but notice their catchy slogan: “It’s All Good Under the Hood.” That slogan was brainstormed around the Leonetti Graphics conference table years ago. The professionals at All-Pro Auto Reconditioning put on their Leonetti-created shirts before coming to work each day. Are you donning a Vino & Vinyl tshirt? That’s fun and innovation brought to you by Leonetti Graphics. Or maybe you’ve purchased a shirt at the Houston Polish Festival sponsored by Czestochowa Church? That’s a Leonetti shirt too...they’ve been making them for eleven years. You can’t set foot in Old Hickory Inn Barbeque without seeing something produced at Leonetti Graphics. They created their signs, banners, shirts, business cards, window vinyls and decals. And when Old Hickory Inn redid their store, they turned to the Leonetti design team for something cool for the walls. Texas Mizuno Baseball considers Leonetti Graphics family. Leonetti Graphics has designed and produced everything for Mizuno—hats, jerseys and backpacks—since their inception. “Jenni’s amazing!” says a representative of Soleana Stables, a 501(c)(3) therapeutic riding outfit in Alvin. “She gives great prices for nonprofits.” Leonetti Graphics donates shirts for the Fort Bend Education Foundation’s Sugar Shindig—a gesture very much appreciated by

FBISD employees. And speaking of schools...kids love their shirts and spiritwear! The Director of Drama at Baines Middle School has time and again turned to Leonetti for their tshirts and “impeccable customer service.” Leonetti has created shirts for several area schools and Young Life chapters...and circles of friends know who to turn to for group prom shirts! If you can imagine it, Leonetti can create it. In addition to everything mentioned here, Leonetti brings every kind of sign imaginable to the table through their partnership with Scanlin Signs. Need a unique Christmas gift? Concrete company Vortex Construction had Leonetti create company coolers to give employees as holiday gifts. “They’re good people doing good work and we like supporting local,” says a representative. The possibilities are endless...what can Leonetti Graphics create for YOU?

he Fort Bend Hispanic Heritage Forum embraces all Hispanos by instilling pride and respect for the rights of people everywhere. President Joe Vera says, “We’re a Rosenberg-based, county-wide, 501(c)(3), nonprofit/non-partisan corporation founded in 2005. Each year we award scholarships to deserving college bound students. Four years ago, Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land partnered with us in our scholarship endeavor. Thanks to Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land’s generosity and involvement, in each of the past four years every deserving and qualified Fort Bend County applicant has received a scholarship. Not one student has been left out due to lack of funds!” This year, Fort Bend Hispanic Heritage Forum awarded their highest number of scholarships yet: 47! The Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land relationship with the organization started because Ray Aguilar (Classic Chevy Sugar Land Business Development and Community Relations Manager) serves on the Fort Bend Hispanic Heritage Forum board. And it’s just blossomed from there. Joe says, “Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land has really opened doors for us and helped us grow awareness about our organization. We participate in their Chili Cookoff each year. They’ve invited us to the Exchange Club Spaghetti Dinner and countless other events...always introducing us as a partner and worthy organization. And

they believe in our scholarships.” Classic Chevy Sugar Land’s involvement in the scholarships is not just monetary. At least once a quarter, Fort Bend Hispanic Heritage Forum hosts a bingo fundraiser at Stardust in Rosenberg. The event is driven entirely by volunteers and donations, so that 100% of the proceeds can go to the scholarship fund. Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land employees and family members can be seen volunteering at the event. The pizza sold at concessions is often donated in part by Classic Chevy Sugar Land, and so are many of the bingo prizes. And these are great prizes...like a free car detail or tickets for 10 to see the Sugar Land Skeeters in Classic Chevy Sugar Land’s suite at Constellation Field! Classic Chevy Sugar Land General Manager Jeff Sebastian says, “The Fort Bend Hispanic Heritage Forum supports something Classic Chevy Sugar Land strongly believes in: education. We are extremely proud to play a small part in ensuring every deserving applicant receives a scholarship. We are supporting the future of this community...and making a difference!” Visit www.hispanicheritageforum.org or Fort Bend Hispanic Heritage Forum on Facebook for information about sponsoring a scholarship or contributing to the established scholarship fund, attending or helping with upcoming events, or applying for a scholarship.

Ensuring You Get The Very Best

Plastic Surgery by Marie Page

n the words of Dr. Eric Humble, founder of Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery: “My reward begins with my goal of bringing out my patients’ love of life.” And the people have responded. Patients near and far have sought out Dr. Humble’s holistic view towards the concept of beauty and rejuvenation. His practice has grown to include the very best in not only plastic surgery, but also aesthetics and dermatology. And after careful consideration and reflection, Dr. Humble is excited to welcome a second plastic surgeon to his team: Dr. Olga Bachilo. A graduate of Bellaire High School and Rice University, Dr. Bachilo attended medical school at the Texas A&M University System Health Science Center, and completed a six year residency in plastic surgery at UTMB Galveston. “I enjoyed all of my rotations in medical school,” says Dr. Bachilo. “But surgery I enjoyed the best because it gave me the ability to help the patients directly and be able to see immediate results. I also like the diversity and complexity of Plastic Surgery. There is an ability to operate all over the body and there is always more than one approach available, so it is always different.” Dr. Bachilo is pleased to join the team

at Sugar Land Face & Body. “The people here are wonderful, and Dr. Humble’s approach is in line with mine. We both believe in superb, individualized patient care. It really makes a difference. And I’m big into safety and education. I believe patients should be wellinformed about both the risks and benefits of any procedure, so they can make an educated decision about their care.” Together with her husband Dmitry Kislyuk and daughter Emma, Dr. Bachilo is excited to move home to Houston. “Dmitry has a huge family, and we just love hanging out with family and friends.” Dr. Humble says, “When my wife Dr. Lin Humble and I set out on this mission, our goal was to be a state of the art cosmetic surgery practice. We would not be where we are today without our team. We recently welcomed dermatologist Dr. Filiberto Cedeno Laurent. Dr. Cedeno Laurent is Harvard trained and fluent in Spanish. Both he and Dr. Bachilo are committed to my vision of keeping this practice a safe and welcoming place where patients can reach their

goal of finding happiness in the way they look and feel...even if the course of action means a less invasive (and less expensive) method to achieve the desired look. The first step in this process is a consultation. Give us a call to schedule yours today!”

Three Generations

Superior Eye Care of Patients J by Amy Sharp

ennifer Donovan was taught growing up that when it comes to eye care, one must see an ophthalmologist. “It’s what my parents did. So as an adult, I too was seeing a local ophthalmologist. When my son was in the first grade, he failed the vision test at school. We took him to a pediatric ophthalmologist and he needed glasses. We discovered Today’s Vision Sugar Land accepted our insurance, and they had a huge selection of frames. We fitted my son in glasses at Today’s Vision.” “My husband made the connection that Dr. Tom Arnold—an eye doctor he knew through local running club Fort Bend Fit—was the doctor at Today’s Vision,” continues Jennifer. “We were impressed with Dr. Arnold’s work in the community. To simplify things, we decided to make him our eye doctor. Dr. Tom Arnold The best way to describe that decision is this: Once you find a doctor like Dr. Arnold, you never want to change. He’s one of a kind. We’ll be here until he retires, because doctors like him are hard to find. With our kids, he breaks down the kid-doctor barrier. He really takes time to talk to them...and remembers what they are

6 ~ UPCLOSE ~ August 2017

involved in, visit to visit. My daughter only goes for an annual checkup. She has no vision issues...yet Dr. Arnold remembers and asks about her music each time. He’s taken my son from glasses to contacts. His staff is just as amazing and also goes the extra mile. When my son started contacts, we were in there at least an hour as they taught him how to get them in and out. Everyone there is wonderful!” Jennifer’s father, Larry DeSpain, also knew Dr. Arnold through Fort Bend Fit. “I knew him... but as Jennifer said, I was brought up to see ophthalmologists. Optometrists weren’t an option. But when my wife and I were looking for a change back in 2010, we decided to give Dr. Arnold a try based on Jennifer’s experience. To be truthful, we think he’s done a better job meeting our needs. He diagnosed a vein issue behind my eye using

eye mapping technology. My eyes had never been mapped before, and I could have gone blind had the condition gone undiagnosed. Dr. Arnold referred me to a retina specialist. I’m currently undergoing treatment, and the condition has improved.” “We are not strangers to getting eyes checked and eye doctors,” adds Larry. “My wife’s family has a history of eye issues, and my oldest daughter had eye surgery at 18 months. We are very happy with Today’s Vision. The office is very friendly and low-key, and wait times are minimal. It really doesn’t feel like a doctor’s office. But I’m most impressed by the technology. Dr. Arnold stays up-to-date and is constantly improving his capabilities. I see him, my wife sees him, Jennifer and her husband and my grandkids see him...and we’re always recommending him to others!” Today’s Vision • 281-242-2020 15337 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, TX 77478 www.2020sugarland.com

A Stress-Free Gorgeous Master Bath Renovation

lthough Marlene Keplinger’s home is 30 years old, lucky for Marlene, she lives next door to Teri Gilberg’s parents. Teri is known as “The Re-Modelista.” “I’ve seen her in UpClose magazine, and I was curious about her work. I was tired of feeling like I was unable to get my bathroom clean. My tub, shower and plumbing were all original. So this all started when I asked Teri what it would take to get a new shower. Well, once you start, you just keep going. Now I have a gorgeous master bathroom!” “I wanted a zen bathroom with a soaking tub and a step-in shower,” continues Marlene. “We ended up doing it all.” “I love the way Teri does business. She listens to your ideas and achieves what you want. This bathroom is a combination of my thoughts and ideas together with Teri’s ideas and those of the designers she recommended. When I explained to Teri that keeping the shower door clean really bothered me, she suggested moving the showerhead to the other side to create a walk-in shower and eliminate the door. Then Teri suggested moving the sinks to one side and creating a coffee bar!” “I wasn’t sure about her idea to put a chandelier above the tub, but when we started shopping I loved that too! Because the room has many hard lines, I wanted an oval tub to soften those lines and it worked perfectly!” Teri recommended Marlene visit Christine at ProSource for tile. “I wanted tile that looked like wood from an old barn. Christine showed me the perfect porcelain tile that is extra tough and easy to clean. We went with two sizes to make it look more like real wood planks, and Christine also suggested doing an accent wall behind the tub with the same tile, but in a horizontal pattern. On the shower floor are

ocean stones that are therapeutic on your feet. Teri’s vendor did beautiful work on the cabinetry. Together with the granite counter it all blends very well. The tile picks up the brown in the cabinets.” Having done her own contracting for some of her rental properties, Marlene knows how stressful keeping up with contractors can be. “Teri stays on top of everything, relieving me of that stress. She addresses concerns right away and she’s available. Whenever I called or texted, she responded quickly. I never felt like I was one of many jobs. When remodeling, there’s no way to avoid all the dust. But Teri’s crews cleaned up every day, which really helps when you’re staying in the house. Teri made sure everything was done to my satisfaction before the project was considered complete.” And her finished bathroom? “It just has such a feel,” says Marlene. “I love it!”

ort Bend Christian Academy teacher Tony Slate had neck surgery in December. Tony says, “I was one month into my ‘road to recovery’ when I had a pain in my arm. The next day it was turning red. I was worried it was a blood clot, and I knew a blood clot was a real, time sensitive emergency. I had been to St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms before, and I knew if I went there I would be seen right away.” As Tony expected, when he arrived at St. Michael’s he was seen immediately. An ultrasound revealed that he was right: Tony had a blood clot. “The ER doctor and nurses were fantastic. It was a scary situation and they made it not scary. They were calm and helpful and took great care of me. I received the life-saving medication I needed. The doctor admitted me to the hospital overnight. I was transported straight to a room at the hospital. St. Michael’s made sure the room was ready before I got there.” St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms was founded by emergency room physician, Dr. Shannon Orsak. “I created the kind of emergency room that I thought would be best for my own family,” says Dr. Orsak. “That means very short wait times and private examination rooms. We

insurance plans, including Cigna, Blue Cross, United, and Humana. Your insurance MUST pay in-network benefits at the ER of YOUR CHOICE whether the emergency room you choose is “in-network” or “out-of-network.” At this time St. Michael’s, due to governmental bureaucratic decisions, is unable to participate in Medicare, Medicaid, or Tricare.

And as Tony discovered, if you do require surgery or an overnight hospital stay, we transport you to any hospital with an immediate opening that best fits your needs.” Well on his “road to recovery,” today Tony is thankful that St. Michael’s was there when he needed them. “They followed up with me the next day, and after I was out of the hospital. I felt like I was their only patient. I absolutely recommend St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms!”

Feel Like Yourself Again, Naturally

by Marie Page everal years ago local Fort Bend ISD teacher Stephanie Haynes was having issues with weight gain, irritability and bloating. “I was uncomfortable,” says Stephanie. “A friend was seeing Dr. Tamirisa and recommended I do the same. Dr. Tamirisa discovered my body needed more progesterone.” “I’m leary of processed medications,” continues Stephanie. “I see the commercials on TV and all the side effects. So whenever I take meds, I always check the side effects. I was excited to learn that for the progesterone, I didn’t have to worry about side effects...I could take an all-natural and safe plant-based hormone. Dr. Tamirisa called in my all-natural prescription to Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy and they took care of it. It’s made a difference. My only ‘side effects’ are I’m calm and sleeping again. I no longer feel like I’m short-changing my students because of irritability. I recently saw a friend I hadn’t seen in five years...she told me I hadn’t aged a bit. That’s another nice ‘side effect.’ I’m calmer and I believe it’s slowed down the aging process a bit.” “I love that I can take care of my body’s needs naturally, and I love that Campbell’s is here to help me. They’re always friendly. When I walk in the door, they always ask about how I’m doing and inquire about my students. I like that they know me by name, and their customer service is A+. Even if I forget and call them late to get my prescription, they get it to me that day if I need it. They try to help as much Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy as possible.” “If our staff can’t make it… Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy founder Dr. Lance Campbell, then you probably don’t need it!” Pharm. Sara says, “We wanted to get it taken care of right away, but the dentist couldn’t get us in for awhile. My husband often captains with Tommy Lomonte. Not only is Tommy an avid fisherman and friend, he’s also a family dentist. We called him to see what he could do. He got us right in.” Sara’s husband took Miles to Dr. Lomonte’s office to get the cavity filled. “He said it went great. That the entire office staff was very reassuring and made sure Miles was comfortable. I knew it went well when Miles came into the house with a huge smile on his face and said, ‘Mom, Tommy tickled my teeth!’ We’ve since made Dr. Lomonte our family dentist. All four of us see him now!” The Enfingers aren’t the first family to make Dr. Thomas Lomonte their family dentist. He’s been practicing in his same Stafford location since 1982! Dr. Lomonte says, “I designed this practice to meet the needs of your entire family, and that philosophy still holds true today. Water Your Lawn?

No, Water Your Foundation! by Olivia Cane

W

hen the blistering heat of summer rolls across Southeast Texas, it pays to stay inside your nice air conditioned house. You’ve got wifi, cable television and a fridge full of cold drinks. Life is good! Unfortunately, life is more of a struggle for all those things outside, one of them being the foundation of your own house. A foundation isn’t a living thing, but it does actually breathe. Because of the unique composition of Texas soil (equal parts sand, clay, and black gumbo), the soil beneath your house expands and contracts like a pair of lungs. And the hotter it gets, the drier the soil. The drier the soil, the more likely it is to push and pull against your foundation, wreaking all kinds of structural havoc. And what’s connected to your foundation? All the water pipes in your house! So while the soil is cracking around your foundation, your pipes can spring leaks—and that includes your water

meter. Once that starts leaking, you are literally draining your hard-earned money away and it might be months, even years, before you know it. Same thing with your air conditioning lines, which are piped into your plumbing stack in the attic. Once the condensation from those lines starts running, it can be Leak City. This isn’t an AC issue... it’s a plumbing issue. And unless you have a professional plumber come out to do an inspection, you might not realize the problem until it’s too late. Master plumbers Alan Burkhalter and his brother Chris, journeyman licensed plumbers Jeff Johnson and Alan’s sons Beau and Luke, and apprentices Jaime and Trevor along with Alan’s other son Jake are more than familiar with the Dr. Jeckyll-Mr. Hyde personality of Texas soil and what it can do to a foundation. That’s because they’ve been serving the Sugar Land area for three generations. Give them a call and Alan’s wife Jennifer

will set you up with an appointment. Alan and his team can detect leaks if you have them and fix them when you do. They also advise you to keep your foundation watered, preferably with a soaker hose, so it gets a nice steady drip that doesn’t pool. “At Alan’s Plumbing, we have a long tradition of customer service,” explains Alan. “Unlike the big national franchises, we are actual residents of the neighborhoods we serve. All three of my boys graduated from Elkins High School. We love our work and we consider what we do a public service. After all, nothing is more important than water. We provide expert affordable service and we are a company that lives its values. We are here for you!” Alan’s Plumbing

A Repeat Customer

.O. and Betty Clifton started a remodeling effort on their home 10 years ago. “I made a list of everything I wanted done in priority order,” says R.O. “In 2006, I had a general contractor itemize that list. When we got to my budget cutoff point, we did phase one: the kitchen.” In 2014, the Clifton’s were ready to do phase two of their remodel. “We wanted to extend the tile we had installed in the kitchen into our dining room, entryway and study. I needed to find that same tile. I googled and Lone Star Floors had it, plus their store was close by. We walked in and met a salesperson who was very helpful. In addition to the downstairs, we also wanted to tile the upstairs bath, and carpet the upstairs and stairs. The salesperson gave me an acceptable price and we went with it.” “Both the carpet and tile installers sent by Lone Star Floors were very good at their craft. The tile installer was meticulous. It’s done right and he cleaned up afterward. Betty was happy with the results...and if my wife is happy, I’m happy! This summer, we did phase three of our remodel: the master bath and bedroom. We wanted to match both the tile and carpet from 2014, so I went back to Lone Star Floors. I requested the same salesperson, but he had retired. The salesperson I worked with was just as helpful, and the same installer that put in our tile 2 ½ years ago did our master bath tile. I think it speaks well for the company that an installer has stayed that long.” “Finding a contractor or company that you trust and does a good job is always a concern,” adds R.O. “I’m happy to share my Lone Star Floors personal experiences.”

CRYOTHERAPY AND PCOS BY AMY SHARP

Roughly five million women in the United States suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). As one of the most common hormonal endocrine disorders in women, symptoms include chronic inflammation, bloating, weight gain and acne. Stephanie Pratt is one of these women. Stephanie says, “When I was planning my wedding last summer, I heard about cryotherapy and its benefits...particularly its success in reducing inflammation. I lived in Friendswood at the time, and I found an iCRYO location there. I started going twice a day, every day last August. The immediate benefits were my inflammation and stomach bloating were significantly reduced, my sleep was improved and my energy levels were up. By October, my wedding month, I had an added perk. I had lost about 10 lbs, which is difficult to do with PCOS. You burn about 500-800 calories in a cryotherapy session. In the cold temperatures your body turns to fight or flight mode. You can tell when the session is over...you’re hungry right away. Losing the weight was a nice surprise. Since I also suffer from acne induced by my PCOS, a week before my wedding I did a cryo facial. After the facial, my face was flawless for my wedding!” Now residing in the Sugar Land area with her new husband, today Stephanie is the store manager at the new iCRYO Sugar Land. “When I found out they were opening here, I inquired immediately!” In addition to whole body cryotherapy and cryo facials, at iCRYO Sugar Land— owned by Fort Bend County native Joseph Uduma—you’ll find localized cryotherapy, compression therapy, and an infrared sauna where you can sweat out an additional 500-800 calories and toxins... all at affordable prices. And because it all makes you hungry, you can pick up perfectly-portioned, ready-made meals prepared by Bee 12 ~ UPCLOSE ~ August 2017

n the heat of another Fort Bend County summer, Sno-Cones and air conditioning are the closest things to heaven you’re going to find. That’s why the folks at Jackson Air & Heat have decided to celebrate “Air Conditioning Appreciation Days” August 3–August 15. Because let’s face it: If air conditioning were water, we’d all be swimming in it. For those of us lucky enough to live in the great state of Texas, we’ve become distinguished connoisseurs of air conditioning. And some places just do it a whole lot better than others. We find those places and stake them out: malls, movie theaters...the full-blast air conditioning vents of our cars. But what if the best air conditioning in town was in your own home? “Filling your home with the freshest, coolest, most evenly distributed air conditioning is exactly why we’re in the business,” says Brian Jackson of Jackson Air and Heat. “The strain we put on air conditioners in the Houston area is nothing short of brutal. If you want to beat the

by Olivia Cane heat here, you have to get out the big guns. And the biggest gun you can bring to this gun fight is a Trane TruComfort® Technology XV20i air conditioner.” So what makes a Trane TruComfort® powerful enough to do battle with the Texas heat? “Variable speed technology,” explains Brian. Trane TruComfort® units are specially calibrated to give you the right amount of air conditioning precisely when it’s needed while constantly removing humidity. “If your unit is constantly running trying to keep up, not removing humidity and your electric bill is through the roof, it’s time for a new air conditioner. Because it’s so energy efficient, you’ll save tons of money on your energy bills. You may also be eligible for 0% financing or Trane instant rebates plus some generous Centerpoint rebates.” While you’re doing your part to appreciate air conditioning in the Fort Bend County area, you might also appreciate the fact that Jackson Air and Heat has received the Better Business Bureau Award for Excellence for many years running and are the proud recipients of the Angie’s List Super

Service Award. Brian Jackson and his crews work tirelessly to apply their EPA and Nate-certified know-how to every job. Jackson Air and Heat is the oldest independently-owned Trane Comfort Specialist in the area...35 years and counting. “Eighty percent of our customers come from customer referrals,” says Brian. “We are really proud of that. So if you’re looking for a top-ofthe-line air conditioner for a good price, give us a call. We’d like to make you the next valued customer who refers us!”

THIS TEAM DOCTOR by Amy Sharp

pex Cheer & Athletics, owned by Alison Baecker, Jennifer Wells, Nikki Greig and Stacy Jones, trains some of the finest cheer and tumble athletes in our area. These athletes nail it on the gym floor, and put in countless hours of practice. And behind the scenes, team doctor and chiropractor Dr. Jose Simon is making sure they’re strong, making sure they’re flexible, and in the event of injury...gets them back on the gym floor as soon as is safely possible. It all started about six years ago when Apex owner Alison Baecker’s daughter Brooke (now 18) injured her knee. Alison says, “My husband was playing golf with Dr. Simon, and he told him about Brooke. Dr. Simon suggested we bring Brooke to see him, that perhaps he could get her back to competing quicker. And that’s exactly what he did. Through electro stimulus, lots of icing and muscle work, he worked through her muscle tissue pain and got the swelling down and the soreness out. Then he started coming to competitions with us. Brooke wanted him to be there to tape her, or help her with whatever she needed. That’s how the relationship evolved. Three years ago, Dr. Simon suggested we put in a comprehensive strength and stretching program to help prevent injuries. Today he teaches that class at our gym and we are seeing the difference. Of course, some injuries are inevitable. When one of our athletes does get injured, it’s easy to get in and see Dr. Simon. You never have to wait. Dr. Simon really goes out of his way to help us.” The science behind the Simon Spine doctors is Functional Movement Screen. FMS assesses basic movement patterns to identify tightness and weakness in the body, and then corrects those patterns before major problems occur. Dr. Simon is utilizing FMS to keep the APEX cheerleaders in tip-top shape. But more importantly...the Apex athletes love Dr. Simon! Alison’s daughter Brooke says, “For every injury, including my hip surgery, Dr. Simon never let me give up. I felt like he cared, he really wanted to see me get better. There were times I didn’t think I would make it through the rehab, and he got me through it. He’s like my second family.”

P

aul and Michelle Fenley’s pool was built sometime in the 1990’s. The bottom was cracked. The red brick coping was coming out, the plaster was faded, the pool had only a one-speed pump and no water features. It was surrounded by concrete that was stained and bare, and the patio had an old tin roof carport type cover. “It just wasn’t cool,” says Michelle. “It was time for a major renovation.” With their daughter graduating from Clements, the couple wanted their backyard renovation done in time for a party last spring. “We shopped around quite a bit,” says Paul. “And we got three quotes. Mike Bratton, the owner of Bratton Pools, was the only one that seemed to know what he was doing. There was no used car sales pitch. He was very straightforward and seemed legitimate. And we liked that he’s a man of faith. That gave us peace of mind knowing he answers to someone besides his pocketbook. He’s a family man and his kids go to school here. He’s invested in this community.” To begin the design process, the Fenley’s visited the Bratton Pools showroom. “We had ideas and Mike suggested things we had not thought of. When we told Mike we wanted to take away the pool steps and add a jacuzzi, Mike said, ‘Sure, let’s do it.’ We assumed we would add the traditional rock waterfall in the back, but Mike came up with a cleaner concept that’s easier to maintain, including a fire pit with fire/water bowls. They came out great. For a company his size, we were impressed that he had the latest and greatest in CAD (computer-aided design) modeling tools. The CAD designer pulled in both our house

and backyard, and came up with three or four concepts. We could actually visualize the finished product before ever starting construction.” Bratton Pools had eight weeks to complete the project— which included the jacuzzi, a waterfall wall with two copper fire/ water features, a new outdoor kitchen, new pebble plaster, new tile and travertine coping, redoing the deck with a stamped overlay, and updating the equipment to include automation and LED lights—before the Fenley’s hosted their daughter’s graduation party. “I’m in the project management business,” says Paul. “And every project has problems. A good manager produces a successful project in the midst of the problems. That’s Mike. He’s reachable and reasonable all the time. He perseveres through the problems...including Michelle’s stress about the party. We changed paths on the kitchen at the last minute...deciding on rock instead of stucco. The crews were at our house until 8pm the night before the party.” “Our company, ATEC Inc., provides products and services for aerospace,” continues Paul. “At the office we often quote Gene Kranz: ‘Failure is not an option.’ Mike got that. Our graduation party guests were able to enjoy both the pool and the hot tub. Many were from out-of-state and had never visited us here. All were impressed with our backyard. That’s a successful project!” Bratton Pools ~ 281-988-7700 www.brattonpools.com

The Lawyer Who Cares THIS MONTH’S TOPIC:

“Service Above Self”

by Amy Sharp otary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who come together to make positive, lasting change in communities at home and abroad. Behind a motto of “Service Above Self,” Rotarians have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on sustainable projects. Rotary International’s theme this year is “Making a Difference,” and our Sugar Land Rotary Club is doing just that in both the Fort Bend community and in the world. Local attorney and Sugar Land Rotary President-elect Margie Connolly became involved with Rotary because she wanted to give back to the community and associate with like-minded people. “What developed is a group of very close friends, and many opportunities for ‘Service Above Self,’” says Margie. “We all want to give back to the community based on our own special gifts.” One of Rotarian Tracy Walker’s gifts is giving of herself to her family. She has three children! And because of Rotary, that number grew by two. Tracy says, “Through Rotary, I have hosted two

exchange students...one from Brazil and one from Sweden. I now consider them part of my family!” Rotarian Rose Johnson has devoted her life to helping others get screened for colon cancer after nearly losing her own life to the disease. Rose says, “Rotary provides me a team of people to help me focus on my passion for colon cancer awareness.” David Shaw has been a Rotary member since 1961, joining the Sugar Land Club in 2001. David says, “I believe Rotarians together can accomplish much more than any individual. To quote one of our newest members, Ahmed Dhanani, ‘I can point with a single finger, but I know that I have five on each hand, and can make a fist–which makes a much bigger impact.’” Margie adds, “Here in Sugar Land, our club is comprised of people from all age groups, and of diverse backgrounds. We’ve helped the Fort Bend Women’s Center, Fort Bend Literacy Council, Fort Bend Boys Choir and Fort Bend Rainbow Room. We’ve made significant monetary donations to Rotary International’s extraordinary success in the near eradication of polio. I truly believe young people can benefit from becoming involved in Rotary. It’s monumental in developing both leadership skills and the commitment to serving others.” And another of Rotary’s newest and youngest members, Sarah Reno, agrees. “I have been a member for a short time, but Rotary has already made a difference in my life.” 2017-18 Rotary President Jim Munnell is committed to that same purpose. “I’m a firm believer in helping others help themselves. As President, I hope to help the next generation develop a legacy of ‘Service Above Self.’” For more information on Rotary or to attend a meeting, visit www.sugarlandrotary.org.

emember back when you first got married? Did you live in a smaller house and drive a smaller car... and in the years since you’ve upgraded both? What about your engagement ring? Did you know local Plaza Jewelers—family-owned and operated by the Samir Dharia family—can help you upgrade your diamond as well? “That’s right,” says Prasanthi, diamond sales representative at Plaza Jewelers. “No matter the size of your first diamond, we can help you upgrade to bigger and/or higher quality.” If your first diamond was purchased at Plaza Jewelers, the math is easy: 100% of what you paid for that diamond goes toward your new one. But if you purchased your diamond elsewhere...no worries, you can still upgrade! Prasanthi says, “Your diamond is graded by GIA (Gemological Institute of America) standards and its value is determined by RapNet (the global market for diamonds). Once the value is determined, that amount is deducted from the price of your new diamond at Plaza Jewelers.” With a great selection of diamonds, Plaza Jewelers can custom build the ring of your dreams on-site using CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) and 3D wax rendering. Prasanthi says, “We have every shape and color of diamonds...and can help you find what you’re looking for and create a design you will love. Choose a Hearts and Arrows diamond where an E color looks like an F (diamond color ratings). A non-fluorescent diamond can also make the color rating look higher than it is. We can fit your needs and budget.” Financing is available at Plaza Jewelers. If you’re in the market for that first engagement ring, Plaza Jewelers is the perfect choice: It’s easy to upgrade five, 10, or 20 years down the road for 100% of what you pay. And if you’re already 10 or 20 years down the road...maybe it’s time for that upgrade? Drop in and see what Plaza Jewelers can do for you!

hen Clements High teacher and boys soccer coach Todd Ericson moved two years ago, he gave up the gym membership in his old neighborhood. Last fall, his wife noticed a new gym, Koko FitClub, had opened near their new home. She looked it up and they gave it a try. Now—nine months later—Todd, his wife, and the couple’s 17-yearold daughter continue to be official Koko-Nuts! What’s Koko FitClub? It’s a technology driven concept that tailors your workouts so that you get the best gains possible for the time you spend in the gym. An initial consultation with a personal trainer determines your fitness level and baseline measurements, then Koko’s computerized equipment uses that data to design a workout plan. Weight, pace, and rest time are precisely calculated, and the patented Smartraining machines guide you through each workout. Workouts are tracked and adapted as

your fitness needs change, so your body is constantly challenged. “I like that they keep track of everything,” says Todd. “And they do a good job of incentivizing the workouts. I’m a coach and I’m competitive. All three of us are...and the incentives make us want to work harder. We’ve done some individual Koko competitions and now we are doing teams. The teams were randomly assigned—so we’re on three different teams—and we all keep track of where we are on the team!” Not only is he enjoying the workouts, Todd is realizing the benefits. “A year ago I had a tough time keeping up with my sons while hiking in Colorado. This year we took a trip to Utah, and at 50 years old I had no issues doing an 18 mile hike. Koko FitClub is like a computerized Fitbit.

You can see what you’ve accomplished and you can see how much strength you’ve gained. It’s just easier to see results this way!” It’s time to join the Koko-Nut movement! Like Todd and his family, you’ll have fun and get in shape along the way!

Taste Means Authentic & Organic

Everything G

reat tasting food. It’s the universal love language. Just ask Yi Liang...it’s how he met his wife Li Luo, better known as the “Cooking Girl.” “We met in college, back home in China. Li was working with medical equipment and I was a medical student. She invited a group of us to her home for her birthday, and she cooked an oxtail soup and some fish. It was too good. That’s how this all began...with a very good dinner.” Four years ago, the couple moved to Houston so Yi could continue his studies in medical research at Texas A&M College of Medicine. “Li began bringing lunches for my colleagues and they loved it. We decided

to open a restaurant.” Yi and Li opened the successful Cooking Girl restaurant on Montrose. Now expecting their first child, they’ve sold the Montrose location, moved to Sugar Land, and opened a Cooking Girl restaurant right here on Highway 6 near Telfair! Cooking Girl specializes in authentic and organic Szechuan/Sichuan food all created by Li. “It’s healthy,” says Yi, “but taste means everything. This is different from American Chinese. It’s the flavor of Li’s home, the southwest China countryside. Li is very strict about the taste. We use fresh, organic vegetables, eggs and meat. Our beef is Angus beef and pork is Berkshire. Much of our seasoning comes straight from China, and it brings flavor you can only find in China. Our regulars that have traveled or lived in China frequently tell us how authentic our food tastes!” So what do you eat at Cooking Girl? For starters, the menu features the two dishes that stole Yi’s heart: “Gentle Touch” soup (oxtail and tomato) and “Hot Diving Fish” (flounder, cucumber, pepper and ginger). “Hot Diving Fish” happens to be the most popular item on the Cooking Girl menu. Those that love spice love the “Pepper Twins Chicken” (chicken thigh, pepper and peppercorn), and those that like the not-so-spicy enjoy “TMD Soft Bacon” (pork belly and pickle). “Eggplants Love Green Bean” tickles the taste buds of vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. And if you don’t want to venture to the world of authentic, Cooking Girl also features some of your American favorites—including “General Tso’s Chicken,” “Fried Broccoli Shrimp” and many others. “But even these may taste different and better!” warns Yi. “They’re also prepared to Li’s strict standards and all organic!” Whether you visit the quaint and elegant Cooking Girl dining room or order take out, this authentic and organic Chinese is sure to impress you. Cooking Girl can accommodate most dietary restrictions. Look for menu additions and updates monthly...Li’s always experimenting in her kitchen at home. “When I met her I was thin,” says Yi. “Not so much now. It’s not because the food’s not healthy...it’s because I can’t stop eating her cooking! It’s so good!”

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

“Dr. Harris gave me my life back.”

M

by Sara Adams onique Walker suffered from severe migraines for years. The migraines were so intense that she found it difficult to keep up with her fast-paced career in television production. Monique says, “My head would hurt so badly, I couldn’t even think.” She sought help from various doctors but was disappointed in the outcome. The medications they prescribed brought little relief and left her feeling sick and disoriented. She found that bouncing back after a migraine seemed to take longer with each episode. Then, in 2012, she had a stroke and had to cut her hours back to part time. On Thanksgiving Eve in 2016, Monique had an appointment with Dr. Harris to discuss a project she was developing. She woke up with a migraine that morning, but she was determined not to let it interfere with her regular schedule. When Dr. Harris saw how much pain Monique was experiencing, he recommended doing a workup to determine the cause of her pain. Dr. Harris said, “The chances are favorable your condition will benefit from the headache treatment I’ve developed over 40 years. Rather than treating one headache at a time with pain relievers only to have the headache return again, why not have natural treatment of the underlying causes and see if it’s possible to improve or even get rid of the factors that are causing the headaches.” Monique says, “I went home after that first visit, went straight to bed and slept better than I have in 20 or 30 years. I woke up refreshed and ready to cook Thanksgiving dinner for my entire family. Dr. Harris gave me my life back. Dr. Harris addressed my whole body. He explained where the pain was coming from and how he was going to relieve it. Every member of his staff was knowledgeable, and they treated me with kindness and were caring. Besides the different treatments, Dr. Harris gave me practical advice on how to hold my neck and sit properly. He showed me that I can be whole again; that I don’t have to stop doing what I love.” Well respected among his colleagues and the community as a philanthropist and humanitarian, Dr. Steve Harris offers a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with chronic pain or to help improve their overall musculoskeletal function and health. He is known for incorporating new technology and techniques that complement his safe and holistic approach.
