Powered by the KW community of agents
or many years, your Keller Williams Southwest Houston Market Center (KWSW)—the largest realty office in Fort Bend County—has participated in RED Day. RED Day, which stands for Renew, Energize and Donate, is Keller Williams’ annual international day of service. Each year on the second Thursday of May, associates around the globe celebrate their cultural icon, Moe Anderson’s birthday, by spending the day away from their businesses serving worthy organizations and causes in their communities. This past May, KWSW agents and employees spent RED Day at three local nonprofits. At Fort Bend Animal Control, they built a storage facility for food and supply donations and sponsored pet adoption fees. They did organizing, cleaning and gardening work for Fort Bend Family Promise, and at Parks Youth Ranch volunteers provided social and entertainment events for the residents. Over 150 agents participated. In fact, KWSW
set a contribution record during RED week, which included Red Day, a Blood Drive and Shredding Hunger. Total contributions to all nonprofits, including volunteer hours, cash and in kind donations, totaled over $25,000 for the week! With the encouragement from the corporate office to do more local, grassroots giving, KWSW is organizing their own local charity to provide even more support to Fort Bend County: R.E.A.L. Giving Foundation. President of the Board Mike Wong says, “We will follow the foundation and culture established by our corporate charity, KW Cares. We’ve put together a great leadership board with vast experience in 501(c)(3) organizations, including Linda Day, Danielle Durocher, Kimbra Valachovic, Carolyn McEathron, Sharon Parker, Krista Ales and myself. We believe we have the synergy as a group to work collaboratively toward a common goal: giving back and serving this community. We selected this group because each serves

with their heart, and everyone’s intentions are in the best place.” Vice President of the Board Kimbra Valachovic says, “We are inspired not only by Red Day and KW Cares, but by other events that have occurred in our office. Years ago when a fellow agent had brain cancer, our agents came together and held a one day fundraiser to help with medical costs. We raised over $40,000 with the help of the entire real estate community. We want to spread this love and giving to not just KWSW agents, but to worthy causes all over Fort Bend County.” R.E.A.L. Giving is currently operating with donated funds from top producers in the KWSW office. Mike says, “We passed around the hat and collected money to start the legal process.” In addition to fundraising events, R.E.A.L. Giving expects a large part of their funds to come from annual pledging by the agents. Kimbra says, “Many of our agents already do this for the corporate charity. For example, an agent can pledge $5 for each closing to R.E.A.L. Giving. This is also an opportunity for all agents in the area...not just KWSW agents. This is exciting. It really fits our culture, ‘Giving Where We Live,’ our group and everything we’ve accomplished so far!”

I Can’t Say Enough Good About Him… A
by Sara Adams
t seventy-eight, Sibyl Kirby has had her share of medical issues. Most recently she found herself fighting a losing battle. Both of her legs were red, swollen and weeping and nothing she did seemed to help. After consulting one specialist, she did not see any improvement; so she asked Dr. Darcourt for a referral, and he recommended Dr. Ulises Baltazar. Discouraged and frustrated, Sibyl felt immediately reassured the moment she met Dr. Baltazar. She says, “Never ever have I had a doctor as caring as Dr. Baltazar. He treats me like family. When I told him, ‘Don’t hold back, I want you to be honest with me,’ he promised he would treat me like he would his own mother. That meant a lot to me.” Dr. Baltazar explained to Sibyl that she had lymphedema and although her legs would never be completely healed, with treatment, they could be managed. He told her they would work together to reduce the pain and swelling in her legs, and most importantly monitor them to make sure they did not become infected. Sibyl says, “The swelling has gone down and even though some days are better than others, I feel confident knowing that Dr. Baltazar is keeping an eye on me and he has everything under control. I probably wouldn’t have made it without him.” The diagnosis for lymphedema is done by physical exam, ultrasound and imaging of the lymphatic vessels through very special techniques. The treatment includes complete decongestive therapy (CDT) that is achieved mainly through manual lymph drainage by a Certified Lymphedema Therapist, compression therapy with compression ban-
daging, compression garments and pneumatic pumps, exercise, weight loss, and skin care. It is important to understand that lymphedema management is a team effort and active patient participation is the key to a successful team. Dr. Ulises Baltazar is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery, and a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. He is a highly regarded vein specialist with extensive experience working with conditions resulting from issues of the circulatory system. If you would like Dr. Baltazar to be a part of your lymphedema management team to address circulatory issues and support improved venous activity for your best possible outcome, call today and tell him, “Sibyl sent me.”

The Best Technology in Dermatology by Amy Sharp
S
ugar Land Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery is expanding! The newlybranded Houston Dermatology and Plastic Surgery is here to provide even more services to help patients look and feel their best, starting with equipping the new Katy location to be one of the best dermatology centers in the area. Harvard-trained dermatologist Dr. Filiberto Cedeno Laurent says,“We have a ton of tools here, including the very best in laser technology.” In this office, Dr. Cedeno Laurent practices both medical and cosmetic dermatology.“It’s the best of both worlds. For patients that have more invasive procedures performed by one of our plastic surgeons, I can complement the surgery by taking care of surgery scars, etc. And I can complement helping a person feel and look more beautiful in countless ways thanks to our new tools!” For the best possible outcome, Dr. Cedeno Laurent believes in a multi-modality approach. “Our options for treatment include skin care products, chemical peels, and now laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) technology...and we have seen very good results! One of our newest lasers is for hand rejuvenation. Even if you’ve rejuvenated your face and other parts of your body, your hands tell your age more dramatically than any other part. In fact, the hands and neck don’t lie! This new co2 laser enhances production of collagen in your hands by creating tiny zones of thermal energy. The result
is tightened skin, improved tone and texture, and brown, red and pink spots and wrinkles all go away!” At Houston Dermatology and Plastic Surgery Dr. Cedeno Laurent successfully utilizes his suite of lasers and advanced technology to treat a variety of conditions, including: • Skin redness • R osacea • Dilated blood vessels on the chin and nose • Pigmentation and hyperpigmentation • Leg veins • H air removal • Freckles • M oles • Pre skin cancer spots • Acne • Scars • Tattoo removal • Skin tightening and resurfacing (including hands!) • Vaginal rejuvenation • Urinary incontinence and pelvic floor tightening • Skin tag and growth removal
The first step is to schedule a consult, where Dr. Cedeno Laurent listens to your concerns and desires, then goes over any risk factors and the side effect profile of each potential treatment. He then tailors a plan to your skin type, taking into account both your budget and allowance for downtime. Sugar Land Face & Body was founded by plastic surgeon Dr. Eric Humble with one mission in mind: to help patients find happiness in the way they look and feel. Dr. Cedeno Laurent believes in this philosophy, and is excited to bring even more options to the table with this suite of technology. Schedule a consult today!

ore the twelve years ago, Janet Peri was looking for an eye doctor. “I was working at St. Laurence Catholic School,” says Janet. “Dr. Tom Arnold’s daughter was a student...so I decided to give him a try.” Today, Dr. Tom Arnold at Today’s Vision Sugar Land is still Janet’s eye doctor. Janet suffers from a condition known as dry eye. Janet says, “My eyes constantly feel dry and parched, and I blink a lot. I also have a lot of eye ‘guck’ or eye ‘boogers.’ Many years ago, my eye doctor determined I had dry eyes using a thread test. A thread was placed in my eye to measure my tears. I was told back then that I was not a candidate for contact lenses. I’ve controlled my dry eye with prescription eye drops and worn glasses.” Lucky for Janet, technology in optometry has evolved and Dr. Arnold makes it a priority to stay ahead of that curve. He was one of the first eye doctors in Texas to fit scleral contact lenses. Scleral lenses have a larger diameter than other gas permeable contact lenses and rest on the white part of the eye. They can be used to treat severe dry eyes because the space between the cornea and the lens acts as a fluid reservoir, keeping eyes moist. Janet remembers the day she learned she could be fitted in contacts. “It was four or five years ago and I was very excited!” As scleral contacts have themselves evolved, each year Dr. Arnold has tried

new and different options with Janet. “You can tell he’s excited about it. He likes the challenge and that’s so comforting. I will be honest, there have been times I was ready to wave the white flag. We are still trying to find that sweet spot...and we are getting close. This year we moved to single vision
Janet adds, “Mine is a tough case and Dr. Arnold wants to get it right. I met him when he was a dad at the school where I worked, and now he’s a friend. He’s a good guy and I’m always happy to let people know how great he is!”

That has made an incredible difference. My newest lenses also have a special coating to make them more comfortable on my dry eyes.” Janet’s new lenses are coated with Tangible Hydra-PEG. Dr. Arnold says, “This coating is a game changer. It improves wettability and increases lubricity or the smooth feeling of any gas permeable lens—including scleral—making the lens significantly more comfortable. A great option for patients with dry eye.”

Amy’s Story-anything but scary! by Donna Reed

ission West Elementary school teacher Amy McConnell has seen Dr. Thomas Lomonte since she herself was a student. She remembers that first dental appointment with a new dentist...Amy was a junior high student and very apprehensive. But the trip to Dr. Lomonte’s dentist office was anything but scary! “The entire staff was so personable and nice, and answered my mom and dad’s questions... even mine. Everyone was so patient.” Today, after numerous dental appointments and procedures, Amy says, “We have never felt like he was trying to do more dental work than was needed. He’s very kind, gentle and easy-going, making sure patients are comfortable and not stressed out about procedures like filling a cavity or cleanings.” Amy, her brother, and her parents are still patients of Dr. Lomonte today. “And once I got married, my husband and then my daughter started seeing him for dental visits too.” Amy’s daughter, now seven, has seen Dr. Lomonte for nearly five years. On the first visit, he checked that her daughter’s baby teeth were coming in correctly. “And as soon as her molars came in, he made sure to seal them to prevent cavities— preventative care so we wouldn’t have any dental problems later.” “Dr. Lomonte’s office reflects his calm Come in demeanor,” adds Amy. “When you walk into the sitting room, you see a wall with cascading as a patient water. There’s an atrium with water fountains and and leave plants, it’s so relaxing. A very peaceful and calming as a friend! atmosphere for kids and their parents. I highly recom-

It’s Not Just a Pool... It’s a Family EXPERIENCE!
hen Matt and Gail Kilboy moved into their home 17 years ago, Matt assured Gail they would never have a pool. “But never is a long time,” says Matt. “When I started researching pool companies, I literally felt like there were hundreds of options out there. We included Bratton Pools in the initial round of estimates because they had done a friend’s pool, the Bratton family attends our church, and our daughters go to school together. From there, Bratton Pools certainly earned our business. They were comparable in scope, responsiveness and pricing...and we placed them in our top three. The deciding element was we wanted to deal with a local, family-based company. We felt they would be more responsive and help walk us through this journey.” The first part of that journey was design. “We did not have a solid vision,” says Matt. “So Bratton Pools stepped up to the table with designs, and we tweaked them with our input. The 3D design software was effective, and became really meaningful when selecting tiles and visualizing color selections.” Through use of 3D CAD (computer-aided design) modeling tools, the Kilboys were able to see their design come to life, a design that included a new pool with a raised waterfall wall and Antigua Pebble Plaster, a fire pit, an outdoor kitchen and a travertine deck. “Construction went as scheduled,” continues Matt. “Every jour-
ney has a couple of twists and turns along the way. These were well communicated. In the end, there were very few surprises. We had hired another contractor to do our patio cover. Bratton Pools cooperated and effectively worked in conjunction with that contractor. In fact, I believe they exchanged business cards to possibly collaborate on projects in the future!” A family-owned and operated business, Bratton Pools maintains an A+ rating with the BBB. They do pool construction and renovation, as well as full outdoor space planning and construction. But that’s just shop talk...what they really do is turn “inside people” into “outside people.” Owner Mike Bratton says, “We hear it all the time after completing projects. Clients say they love to come home from work and soak or swim, or enjoy the view and the sounds of their waterfall in the cooler months. Instead of video games and TV, the kids are inviting friends over for a great time in their ‘fun’ backyard.” The Kilboy family agrees! “We don’t just love our pool. We love the entire experience of our backyard. We find ourselves in the pool every evening as a family. It’s an incredible experience!” Bratton Pools ~ 281-988-7700 Design Center 403 S 5th Street #B, Richmond, TX 77469 www.brattonpools.com

ASK MARGIE
The Lawyer Who Cares THIS MONTH’S TOPIC:
“Estate Planning Made Easy”
by Amy Sharp ichele Crawley and her husband Steve Van Ingen each had a will that was more than ten years old. Michele says, “I knew attorney Margie Connolly through my BNI (Business Network International) group, so we asked Margie to help update our wills.” In addition to the two wills, Margie suggested Steve and Michele create a living trust. Steve says, “We had not thought about it before, but a trust made sense for our situation.” “What I like about Margie,” continues Michele, “is not only is she professional, she made us extremely comfortable when talking about the subject of death. She’s very competent and easy to talk to. To be honest... when I heard trust, I thought ‘Oh, what a pain.’ Steve’s mother has one, but it wasn’t something we had considered for ourselves. Then she stayed in touch by phone and email, and gave us a great package deal on the two wills and trust.” Impressed with Margie’s services, Steve inquired about legal counsel for his project management services company, Van Ingen Group LLC. “It was work she doesn’t do,” says Steve, “so she referred me elsewhere. She helped me find the right people for the job and I appreciated that.” With a focus on protecting families’ futures, Margie has many years experience in family law, probate, drafting wills, trusts and end of life documents. Margie says, “Estate planning may not be a subject you want to talk about, but it’s necessary. Everyone’s situation is different and is greatly affected by many factors, including family dynamics and Texas state law. My job is to guide you through the process and help you make the best possible decisions for your situation.” “Margie made it easier than I thought it could be,” adds Michele. “We absolutely recommend her!”

Jim Munnell, president of Sugar Land Rotary, says, “The Rotary mission is ‘Service Above Self’—in the community, the workplace, and throughout the world. I’m proud to say the Sugar Land Rotary has been actively involved in supporting Fort Bend charities that help children at risk, fight poverty, hunger, and illiteracy, and make a positive impact on our community. Rotary’s annual Fall Classic is our only fundraiser...and we encourage everyone to come out for a great night that will make a difference in the lives of others!” At this “Casino Night” evening you will enjoy a sponsored happy hour, fantastic food, fellowship, fun casino games, a live auction and bid board (items include a Galveston guided fishing trip, Houston Rockets and Houston Astros ticket packages, an estate planning package and more)...and a raffle to win round trip airfare and two nights in Las Vegas! Not only that, all money raised will go to support multiple local Fort Bend charities and the Rotary Foundation’s international initiatives. Event tickets are $100, which includes the complimentary Happy Hour, fabulous food, any non-alcoholic drinks (a cash bar will be available), and access to the live auction events and bid boards. Raffle
tickets are $50. Sponsorship levels range from $500 (Nickel Bet) to $10,000 (Pit Boss level!). Sponsors receive media focus and event exposure, as well as other event night perks based on sponsorship level. This year’s event chairs are Laura Winters and Jared Jameson. Laura says, “Every dollar you bid during the auction or on the bid board will go toward a worthy cause. Organizations supported by Sugar Land Rotary include: Fort Bend Literacy Council, Fort Bend Women’s Center, The Arc of Fort Bend County, Boots and Badges, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels, YIP, The Rose B. Johnson Foundation...and many more! Our goal is to raise over $100,000 for these worthy causes.” That’s a great reason for everyone to get excited...and raffle tickets for the Las Vegas weekend are already going fast! “We are so grateful to UpClose Magazine and all of our sponsors for helping us host this fabulous event,” adds Jared. “Visit www.rotaryfallclassic.org to buy your raffle tickets, event tickets, purchase a sponsorship or make a donation. Raffle tickets, event tickets and sponsorships can also be purchased from any Rotarian. Get a ticket before they’re gone...you will not be disappointed!”

Remembering Please join us as Fort Bend unites in the fight against cancer.
Early Life Carolyn Williams grew up in the small town of El Campo, TX. When she was very young, her mother became a quadriplegic after a car wreck. All who knew her agree that caring for her mother forced her to grow up very fast, molding her into a grateful person who treated everyone with respect...no matter what. Carolyn worked her entire way through school and every day after. Her son Cody recounts, “I was told a story one time about her working at a boat mechanics shop keeping the books. She talked the owner into putting together a racing boat to race in an annual event held in Matagorda Bay. The story ends with her hitting a wave just right that it threw the boat up sideways and when it landed, it jolted her from left to right. She miraculously stayed in the boat... but it scared her so bad, she pulled back on the throttle before crossing the finish line, having to take home 2nd instead of 1st. She was fearless. She faced cancer the same way. Although she had to be scared to death, she never showed it to anyone.” Family Allan Williams met Carolyn one afternoon while surfing at Surfside beach. Allan says, “I was ten years out of college, and had moved back to Lake Jackson to live. I met Carolyn and she invited me to a party that night. I didn’t want to go, but she convinced me. She was the happiest, kindest and nicest person I had ever met, and the most beautiful lady I had ever seen. We were literally together from that day forward. We were married

two and half years later, combining our families: Cody together with my children, Travis and Whitney.” Cody says, “Growing up, Mom always knew exactly where we were going and what we were doing. And she may not have always agreed, but I always told her the truth. I remember her being up all hours of the night with me to help me put together a school project that I didn’t tell her about until the night before. I remember her pitching little marshmallows to me in the front yard as batting practice. Still not sure today where she came up with that idea...but it worked great. She never missed a baseball game or a football game. She was my best friend.” Life with Cancer In March of 2003, Carolyn was diagnosed with breast cancer. She interviewed with Susie Goff and was hired by Johnson Development shortly after. Susie says, “I asked her if she got the job, was she always going to look that perfect. She said, ‘It’s a wig, don’t you know?’ I had no idea.” That was Susie’s first glimpse into Carolyn’s personality. Three years later, Carolyn had bone cancer in her sternum. Allan says, “We were told she had a type of cancer they couldn’t cure. That they could fight it back, put it in remission, but not cure it. I didn’t care what it took though. If Carolyn wanted to try something, I provided it. It’s how giving she was...she thought she might find something that would help a whole lot of people.” Three years after the bone cancer, Carolyn learned she had cancer in every organ in the chest cavity. A couple of years later, she had ovarian cancer. On June 14, 2016, Carolyn Williams passed away from uterine cancer. Cody says, “Whenever she had surgery, Allan and I would both be in the room with her until she was released to go home. This

drove her bananas. Since we were together most of the time, we acted like small children cracking jokes and messing with each other or every nurse and resident, trying to lighten the mood. She must’ve felt like she had two teenagers in that tiny room with her. But I know she loved it.” Her family was close, but Carolyn hid her illness from many...always showing up to work with a smile on her face and a great attitude. Most didn’t realize what she was going through. Carolyn did chemotherapy six different times through the course of her illness. Allan says, “She scheduled her chemotherapy for 4:30 or 5pm so she wouldn’t miss a day of work. Sometimes we got started late if they were running behind. Her treatment took five hours. Often times we were at MD Anderson till 1am. She was back at work again the next morning.” Cody adds, “That’s just who she was. She could be sick all day and night...and then the following day put on her game face to attend any function or birthday party to show her support or love for that person, even when she felt so terrible inside.” A True Love of Life “Carolyn was a proud and incredible lady,” says Johnson Development Co-President and COO Doug Goff. “She never wanted anyone to feel sorry for her or give her what she didn’t earn. Susie and I enjoyed a great personal life with Carolyn and Allan outside of business. This woman liked to celebrate. She was the happiest person I had ever met. Even with all she was going through...she wanted to make sure you were having a good day.” “She could put on her boots and stomp through the mud to go hunting one weekend, and the following she would be attending a formal ball or gala,” says Cody. “Her and Allan used to take us kids to Surfside beach all the time. We would play in the surf while they laid in their lounge chairs hanging out playing backgammon.

She loved being part of a team and the camaraderie of it all. We had a blast playing kickball with Johnson Development. When we lived in Angleton, she and Allan would decorate the entire garage for Halloween...equipped with a haunted house for all of the kids to enjoy and a fun place for the neighbors to hang out.” “We all benefitted for so long,” says Allan. “It was time for one of God’s angels to go home. I couldn’t have asked for a better wife, mother for our kids, and grandmother to Layton, Ava, Haddie and Caroline. She was everything and then some.” A wife, a mother, a grandmother, a friend and a colleague. Carolyn Williams touched many lives. THE

hen Fort Bend County native Brandon Berryman was in college, he took a part-time job with a friend repairing leather seats in cars. Brandon says, “I was showing success early and saw this as a long-term career. We mostly serviced dealerships. Around 2006, I bought a body shop: Sport Performance Collision Center in Stafford. With my background, I marketed to both dealerships and retail.” A true entrepreneur, Brandon now owns the company he worked for in college: national corporation All-Pro Auto Reconditioning. And his Stafford-based body shop, Sport Performance Collision Center, is still going strong...making Fort Bend cars look like new for more than 10 years! After you’ve been in an accident, you want a body shop that can get your car fixed and back on the road as quickly as possible.
18 ~ UPCLOSE ~ September 2017
Brandon says, “Body shops have a reputation for not being quick. Our promise to you is competitive pricing from a friendly and familyowned company...with a quick turnaround. We assist with towing if necessary, and also assist your insurance company with the estimate and appraisal. Then from start to finish, we handle all communication with your insurance company. We aim to make the process as painless as possible.” There is no job too big or too small. Sport Performance Collision Center can replace a headlight or replace the front end of your car. The wheel shop—added in 2009—quickly takes care of bent wheels, corroded wheels, even color changing and machined wheels, and does full wheel remanufacturing overnight. Other services include paintless dent removal and windshield repair and replacement. Brandon says, “We probably see front-end hits and bumper damage the most, but we’ve

equipped our shop to handle whatever comes our way...so we can quickly and easily repair your vehicle to manufacturer standards.” Brandon grew up in Missouri City and lives in the area with his wife and daughter. Both of his businesses are in Fort Bend County: Sport Performance Collision Center in Stafford and the corporate offices for All-Pro Auto Reconditioning are right here in Sugar Land. Whatever your body shop needs—big or small—the friendly folks at Sport Performance Collision Center get you back on the road quickly. Just give

Find and Hire the Best Plumber I by Amy Sharp
t’s the question you should be asking your plumber! Here in Texas, there are four professional levels for a plumber: apprentice (NOT a license), tradesman, journeyman and master plumber. New plumbers start as an apprentice and, after meeting the work experience and education requirements, can apply to take the tests to move to the higher levels of licensing in Texas. Alan Burkhalter, owner and master plumber at local Alan’s Plumbing, explains what licensing means. “First and foremost, anyone doing plumbing in your home should have a license they can produce when asked. But don’t be left with the last tier. A master plumber has at least eight years experience and a journeyman has at least four. But a tradesman...they’re only required two
years experience, and then they can run a truck and do residential plumbing. You can literally end up with a kid in your house. It’s kind of like having an uncertified doctor work on you...you wouldn’t think of it. Some of these houses around town that are 20+ years old take experience to know what to do. We clean up a lot of messes caused by inexperience. We’re happy to help of course...we get it done. But it’s better to get things done right the first time around.” In addition to Alan, his brother Chris is also a master plumber. Alan’s sons Beau and Luke and Jeff Johnson are all journeyman licensed plumbers. Apprentices Jaime and Trevor are working toward their journeymen license, and always ride the truck with one of the licensed plumbers. Alan says, “These are all great
guys. We’ve known Jeff since his mom watched Beau and Luke at their daycare. Trevor played ball with my boys. Jaime’s worked for other companies around town, and we worked hard to get him. He’s a great asset to our company.” Next time you need the services of a plumber, call 281-261-1064 and Alan’s wife Jennifer will send one of these licensed plumbers to your door. They’ll take care of you and do a complimentary hot water heater check to boot! “We’ve been in business 21 years,” adds Alan. “We are a Fort Bend company serving the people of Fort Bend.” Alan’s Plumbing

How To Rejuvenate Your Body and Soul by Olivia Cane
L
et’s face it. You’re tired! You’ve been commuting to work in gridlock traffic, troubleshooting problems, taking meetings and then pulling your “second shift” at home. Every time the phone rings, a little piece of your cool gets chipped away, bit by bit, until finally...you can’t take it anymore. What you need of course, is a massage! And not just any massage. You need the real deal. You need an authentic Thai massage proven to alleviate lower back pain, reduce stress and release muscle tension. Therapeutic Thai Massage is the Sugar Land area’s first authentic Thai Massage spa combining acupressure and assisted Yoga stretches—gentle ones!—to relieve tight muscles, chronic tension and to promote overall health and happiness. Because if you don’t attend to the needs of the body, the body will stop attending to you. Owners Theo and Mona Vora have dedicated their lives to bringing the ancient healing art of Nuad Thai Boran to the Texas area. Mona—formally trained and licensed in both Thailand and Texas—and her trained licensed masseuses have been soothing knotted muscles and tired spirits for years. With their insightful and functional knowledge of the energy points of the body—over four hundred of them—they are able to address specific issues brought about by the excesses of modern living. “We sit for too many hours a day,” explains Mona. “We’re at desks, in cars, in front of screens. This causes muscle imbalances and sometimes crippling pain and stiffness in our legs, glutes and lower back. Even our shoulders can slip out of balance, just from constantly rotating them forward to tap on our cellular devices. At Therapeutic Thai Massage, we actually recalibrate those imbalances by applying gentle pressure right on the source of the problem.” The healing begins the instant you step out of your madhouse of heat waves and honking horns and enter the heavenly bliss of Therapeutic Thai Massage...where the twin fragrances of lemongrass and jasmine soothe your tired mind. Graceful tea cups full of exotic, flavorful teas and the lovely tinkling of a fountain invite you into another world, a better one, where you are placed into caring, knowledgeable hands. Whether you are looking for therapies like Hot Stones, Deep Tissue, Prenatal, Thai Herbal Ball, Swedish, Foot Massage, or even the pleasure of basking in the beautifully appointed Steam Room, Mona and her staff will make sure your visit is everything you are hoping for. “We are here to exceed your expectations,” says Mona. “Make an appointment and we will show you just how good life can feel.”

Zika update and seminar
n Nov. 28, 2016, the Texas Department of State Health Services reported the state’s first case of local mosquito-borne Zika virus infection in Brownsville, Texas. While that’s far from the Fort Bend County area, those who are pregnant might still be feeling apprehensive about the news, given the birth defects linked to the virus. “In our area, there’s really no need to panic,” said Utsavi Shah, M.D. “Right now, we’re counseling patients more on the travel advisories — not traveling to places like Brownsville and Mexico — and writing letters to airlines to get our patients out of their scheduled trips. This also affects significant others, because if they are infected, they could sexually transmit the virus to their loved one. In fact, the experts are recommending waiting six months after traveling to an affected area before trying to conceive.”
Prevention says it’s likely Zika can be spread through blood transfusions. Many people who are infected don’t know they are because Zika doesn’t always produce symptoms. Common symptoms included fever, rash and joint pain, among others. Since there’s currently no vaccine for Zika, the best way to prevent it is to follow these tips: • Avoid areas where the virus is present (available on the CDC website) • Use EPA-approved insect repellents (such as those containing DEET or picaridin) • Wear clothing treated with permethrin (insect repellent) that covers your arms and legs • Spend time indoors or in spaces protected by window and door screens • Be diligent about removing areas of standing water around your home, where mosquitoes can lay eggs
Are you at risk? Anyone who hasn’t had Zika before can be infected; being pregnant doesn’t make you more susceptible. In addition to mosquito bites and sexual transmission, the Centers for Disease Control and

Five Things To Know About Divorce In Texas
by Amy Sharp
1. Where’s the money? So many couples allow one person to control and administer the finances. Be proactive in determining the value of the marital assets. 2. Make a budget. Living as one is more expensive than living as a couple. Know exactly what you need to keep up with monthly expenditures. 3. Plan for co-parenting if there are children. Children love both of their parents and would usually like to stay uninvolved in the divorce process. By agreeing to a parenting plan you assure yourselves and your children that the adults will still handle the parenting and the children are free to be children. 4. Consider reconciliation. It is the public policy of the state of Texas to ensure that families remain intact unless there is no possibility of reconciling. Remember if you loved them enough to marry them, you owe it to yourself to explore all avenues to making it work. 5. Pray. Talk to your supreme being, listen to your spirit, present your petitions and
receive your celestial guidance. The choice to divorce is one of the most difficult decisions a person can make. It should not be taken lightly. It is often said that a family that prays together stays together. Prayer may turn things around. But if it doesn’t change the decision, pray for a just and right outcome and that you will be led to a law firm that has your best interest at heart! Bastine Law Group founder Ronique Bastine Robinson and her team of attorneys practically navigate clients through both the complex legalities of divorce, as well as the emotional journey that accompanies the process. Ronique says, “We care about your personal situation and understand the gravity of needing to move forward through the legal system. Our goal is to put you back on track!”

FOR BRIDES AND GROOMS...
AND ANYONE WITH GOALS TO GET FIT! by Amy Sharp
C
ourtney Lee was really curious about the new digital gym alternative—Koko FitClub—that opened in her Riverstone neighborhood. “I got a flyer in the mail last March. I took that as a chance to drop in and see what it’s all about. I was blown away by the technology! I was preparing for my wedding, and this was perfect. I thought it would be just me, but when I called my fiance Philip and told him about it...he did the trial period too. That was totally unexpected!” Philip and Courtney each had different goals. Courtney wanted to look good in her wedding dress: tone arms, trim waist and a little weight loss. Philip wanted to build muscle. Veronica Malhiot, who co-owns Koko FitClub together with her husband Mark, says, “Koko FitClub is perfect for both Courtney and Philip because here, goals are everything! We use patented, technology-driven systems to create fitness
solutions specifically for each individual’s needs.” Courtney says, “I started with the ‘Beautiful Bride’ program. Let me tell you, I have a history with gyms...and that’s frustrating trial and error. I really like that at Koko you have a goal, you learn about your body and what you need to do to get there. Then your workouts are tracked by the machines and you can actually see what you are doing to get to your goal. The machine tells you what weight and how many reps and how much cardio. Both Philip and I feel we do more and push ourselves more than when working out on our own. I finished the bride program and another program before the wedding...and I felt very confident in my wedding dress!” Married since June, Courtney and Philip
“I started with the ‘Beautiful Bride’ program. Let me tell you, I have a history with gyms...” continue to workout at Koko FitClub. “Honestly, we are still under contract at another gym. But now, I can’t imagine going back to working out on my own. I like setting goals and following a plan, and I definitely recommend Koko FitClub to others. In fact, my friends and family that don’t live in the area are jealous they don’t have one near them. The need something like this!”

How WELL Is Your Air Conditioner Working?
T
here is one truth Sugar Land residents hold to be self-evident: Without air conditioning, most of us could not live here! And September temperatures can be just as scorching as the peak days of summer. Since we depend on good air conditioning to keep us from melting, what should we do when our home air conditioners stop blowing cold?. “There are a variety of reasons why your air conditioner might not be running at peak efficiency,” says Brian Jackson of Jackson Air & Heat. “The best reason to have your air conditioner inspected annually is to make sure it’s not ratcheting up your energy bills while failing to deliver cold, dehumidified air. We could carry any brand under the Texas sun here at the shop, but we chose to carry Trane because it handles our extreme conditions. The Trane TruComfort® Technology XV20i air conditioner is the best unit for our kind of weather. It blows cold, and yet is so energy efficient, you’ll save tons of money on your energy bills.” Throw in that you may also be eligible for 0% financing or Trane instant rebates and some generous Centerpoint rebates...maybe a new A/C is worth considering!
by Olivia Cane So what are the top three reasons your air conditioner isn’t doing its job? 1. “When I come out to your house, the first thing I look for are clogged air filters,” explains Brian. “A dirty air filter restricts airflow, which means your system will not be able to cool your home effectively. Air filters need to be changed once a month during the summer because your air conditioner is running 24/7.” 2. “A frozen evaporator coil can actually cause your air conditioner to break down,” continues Brian. “Poor air conditioner airflow, dirty air filters and coils, and a lack of refrigerant are all common causes of frozen evaporator coils. When you have one, you usually know it right away because although your air conditioner never cycles off, you can stand directly under a vent and still be sweating.” 3. “Besides an inadequate amount of refrigerant, the third most common reason your air conditioner might not be blowing cold is a blocked condenser. It’s extremely common during the summer months for your condenser (the outdoor unit of your air conditioner) to get blocked by a vigorously growing plant. Your
air conditioner works by pulling hot air out of your home and then blowing it outside. If that outtake valve is blocked, your air conditioner is working twice as hard for half the result, and also burning up your energy bill. It shortens the lifespan of your unit.” Jackson Air & Heat is the oldest independently-owned Trane Comfort Specialist in the area...35 years and counting. You already know you can’t live without A/C. But Jackson Air can show you just how lovely and efficient great air conditioning can be!

Work That’s A++!

hen Cindy Pagel was ready to put tile in her master bathroom and hardwood floors in her foyer and dining room, she got three estimates. One was from Lone Star Floors. Cindy says, “I went by the store to pick up samples. I just loved Mr. Z. (co-owner Ziad Mukhaimer). He’s very professional and helpful. He’s not pushy and he’s knowledgable about his products. All three of my estimates were in the same price range, but I just liked the way Mr. Z. handled things...so I went with Lone Star Floors.” Cindy describes her experience with the Lone Star crews as “A++.” “They were at my house for five days. They were very clean, very polite, and respectful to my walls and house. Mr. Z. made a couple of unannounced visits to check on his people and make sure we were on schedule. He also brought in a guy to paint the trim where we put in the tile and hardwood. Just a very good experience.” Locally owned by cousins Ziad Mukhaimer, Mohamed Naser and Imad Mansour, Lone Star Floors has been installing flooring for neighbors like Cindy for more than 30 years. In addition to

Cindy plans to talk to “Mr. Z.” about coming out in October to remove the wallpaper in her bathroom and paint. “I can’t wait to get started again! I just need to save a little money first.” With more than thirty vendors at their fingertips, the Lone Star family can take care of all your flooring and remodeling needs. “I absolutely recommend Lone Star Floors,” says Cindy, “...in a heartbeat!” Lone Star Floors ~ 3 Locations 281-564-1345• 10009 Highway 6 South, Sugar Land, TX 873 South Mason Rd. #300, Katy, TX 281-398-2319 24627 I-45 North Suite # A, The Woodlands/Spring, Texas 832-813-0813 www.lonestarfloors.com

hen Martha Love was ready to gut and redo her master bathroom, she contacted three contractors for estimates. One was Teri Gilberg, better known as “The Re-Modelista.” “I saw several projects Teri had done featured in UpClose magazine. When I met with her, I felt like she had a lot of design sense. When I explained my modern vision to her, she added on to it. I told Teri I wanted to refinish my clawfoot tub in red, and make it a part of my design. She was willing to work with me on that. I didn’t get this same vibe with the other contractors, so I went with Teri.” Since she wasn’t working with a designer, Martha appreciated that both Teri and the people and vendors Teri recommended helped pull her design together. Martha says, “They’re all good people. Christine at ProSource helped me put floor patterns and textures and colors together. I wanted the bathroom focal point to be a chandelier. Luminous Trends had quite a selection, and also showed me catalogs where I could really see my vision. Teri suggested I visit Baths of America to select hardware and bath fixtures that complemented my modern look. Not only did I find what I was looking for, Baths of America was willing to work with my budget. I appreciated that a lot with both the vendors and Teri. They could have pushed a higher end product and they didn’t.” “I feel like construction is generally a week of your life with a lot of dust,” continues Martha. “But Teri’s tradespeople did their best to keep the dust to a minimum. They were very courteous, very professional and did excellent work. I felt like they went beyond my expectations. Teri was very good at holding
my hand and problem-solving. This project turned into an HGTV episode. It was, ‘Oh what’s behind this wall?’ and ‘Why is this plumbing this way?’ Teri assured me it was going to be beautiful, and this sometimes happens when you open walls. Together we problem-solved the design. Today you would never know the ledge covers a mistake in the wall, or that the piping is not 90 degrees to the foundation. The new wet space—the walk in shower with no door—helped both maximize the limited space and minimize cost. ” And the finished product? “Oh my goodness. It’s beautiful! We had been looking at this bathroom for 10 years. It was quite an eyesore. Now it’s totally different: open, airy and modern. Teri really caught my vision and put it to reality. I love it!”

Commissioner Jim Patterson will also lend his auctioneering skills to the luncheon, in hopes of raising further funds to develop Cullinan Park. Net proceeds from sponsorships, ticket sales and the auction will be matched 50% by The George Foundation through a challenge grant. The Conservancy was created in 2010 to advocate for, enhance and protect the natural beauty of Cullinan Park for all. Joseph S. and Lucie H. Cullinan Park (aka Cullinan Park) consists of 754 acres, just north of Sugar Land Regional Airport on Highway 6. The one of a kind, blue-green oasis in the middle of rapidly growing suburbs provides habitat for all manner of wildlife, while delivering a respite for human visitors, too. Since the historic agreement was signed between the City of Houston, the Houston Parks Board, the City of Sugar Land, and the Conservancy less than two years ago, the Conservancy has been hard at work fundraising to ensure the Park is a welcoming, safe, and naturally scenic setting for everyone. Planned improvements to Cullinan Park over the next couple years, depending on funding, include a permanent restroom, invasive species removal, additional trail development, a canoe/ kayak launch, a children’s nature exploration area, expanded parking and other enhancements. CPC invites the community to consider investing in this “priceless natural gem.” Sponsorships and individual tickets for the luncheon are available at www.cullinanparkconservancy.org. Or call Executive Director Angie Wierzbicki at 281-616-7860 for more information. wildlife images by Wendy McSwain

orld-renowned chef and co-owner of the ever-popular Hoggs-nChicks and Live Oak Grill (with friend/partner Roque Baecker), Frédéric Perrier has partnered with longtime friend Tao La to bring The Slanted Frog to Fort Bend County! Chef Perrier says, “Tao and his family own Kim Són and NAM Noodles and More. I’ve known the family for more than 20 years. I enjoy their food. I love Vietnamese and Asian food in general. My kids and I have been eating Dim Sum at Kim Són every Sunday for many, many years. Because I’m French, the La family call me a ‘frog.’ Because I love Vietnamese food and I’m very good with chopsticks...Tao and his brothers nicknamed me ‘slanted frog.’” Always wanting to open something together, Chef Perrier and Tao went for it when a space opened up on Plantation Drive. The new concept is southern comfort meets Asian comfort, and Tao’s nickname for Chef seemed

the perfect moniker for the restaurant: The Slanted Frog! Chef Perrier says, “This isn’t fusion. It’s my southern comfort food with a touch of French (think truffle mac and cheese, cornbread with queso, honey and bacon) on the menu next to Vietnamese and Asian dishes like pho and ramen with some fun tweaks too. We also offer your favorite traditional comfort foods, including chicken fried steak,
buttermilk chicken tenders, General Tso’s chicken and fried rice. We want a family of four to come in and feel at ease...comfortable. With this concept we have the leeway to truly have something for everyone. In my own family, the kids and I love Asian...but my wife, she wants the truffled mac! Here everyone can order their favorites!” With a large patio, The Slanted Frog is planning live bands and even some outdoor cooking on the grill and smoker in the near future. Chef Perrier is also planning a funky and inexpensive wine list. Private events, catering and carry-out are all available. Bring your entire family and enjoy the comforts of The Slanted Frog. Every Romance Has A Story. Wear Yours.

hen Matthew Irwin was ready to propose to his girlfriend Lydia, he visited Plaza Jewelers in Sugar Land based on recommendations from a friend and coworker. “I already knew what I wanted,” says Matthew. “A white gold classic ring with a round center diamond. For that diamond, I wanted VS1 or VS2 clarity, H color, and it needed to be in the two carat range. I had eight smaller diamonds from a ring that belonged to my dad. I wanted those diamonds placed on either side of the center. I met with the Plaza Jewelers designers and we reviewed my specs, breaking it down by price range. We selected a stone that fit my specs and budget.” Plaza Jewelers had the custom-designed engagement ring ready in under two weeks. Matthew packed the ring in his carry-on and took it to Paris for Lydia’s birthday. He proposed at the top of the Eiffel Tower and she said, “Yes!” “What I like about Plaza Jewelers is the simplicity of it all,” says Matthew. “We’ve been back three times since—for wedding bands, earrings for Lydia, and a watch for me. Each time, the process was very straightforward. We explained what we were looking for and they brought it out for us. The customer service is amazing. They offer coffee, water and even a glass of wine. The last time we were there, Alex (Head of Marketing and son of owners Samir and Marlene Dharia) invited me to the back to eat hot wings. They just make you feel welcome!”
Alex says, “We are thrilled we could build a ring that was perfect for Matthew and Lydia. He’s a man that knew what he wanted! But if you don’t know...that’s ok too. We take time to educate you on diamond selection, and then we build your ring together on-site using CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) and 3D wax rendering. That way, you have a tangible visual of the ring before we ever build it.” In business for 25 years, Plaza Jewelers is committed to providing you with the best services and selection in the Texas jewelry industry. Drop in anytime...the Dharia family would love to meet you!

CHIROPRACTIC MEETS CRYOTHERAPY BY DONNA REED Dr. Thomas Kolenko, owner of Freedom Chiropractic and Rehab in Sugar Land, is a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic—a premier college of Chiropractic Education in Iowa. He’s a second generation chiropractor, and by all accounts credits his Dad, who encouraged him to attend the prestigious school. “I planned on going to Texas Chiropractic College in Pasadena,” says Dr. Kolenko. “But Dad instead talked me into visiting Palmer College. At first I said, wait—it’s cold up there! But my family and I decided to make the move and ended up in Iowa for three and a half years. As soon as I graduated, my wife said, ‘No more of this weather, we’re going back to Texas.’ We came back in 2010, ended up in Sugar Land, and about a year later opened my own office.” Little did Dr. Kolenko know...he would end up back in the cold. But this is a different type of cold: cryotherapy! “When I met Joseph Uduma (owner of iCRYO Sugar Land), I knew I could both help his clients, and talk to my clients about his services, especially my athletes and triathletes. Most people look at chiropractic as musculoskeletal, but my main objective with cryotherapy is to control inflammation. Chronic inflammation can lead to joint degeneration, disc degeneration, and joint issues from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, even autoimmune diseases like lupus.” “Through cryotherapy, one gets much more of a cooling effect in the extremities,” continues Dr. Kolenko. “And dropping the body temperature is key to reducing inflammation. As an athlete myself, I know what it’s like to finish a workout, drive home and deal with the soreness. Personally I’ve used the services and done the cryotherapy. The benefits can help cut recovery time in half.” In addition to fully body cryotherapy, you’ll find localized cryotherapy, cryo facials, compression therapy, and an infrared sauna at iCRYO

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY
Successful Spinal Health is No Accident
K
by Sara Adams
en Sinclair, Senior Pastor of Faith Lutheran Church Sugar Land, suffered a neck injury during a car accident twentyseven years ago. Seeking relief for the persistent pain in his neck, Pastor Sinclair made his first appointment with Dr. Steve Harris of Sugar Land Health Center. After a workup including x-rays, Dr. Harris diagnosed Pastor Sinclair’s whiplash and also told him that his left leg was 5/8 inch shorter than his right leg. Surprised that he had never noticed this discrepancy before, Pastor Sinclair followed Dr. Harris’s treatment plan and put a lift in his shoe. His neck pain diminished quickly, and before long he was able to enjoy running again. For the past twenty-seven years, Pastor Sinclair has maintained and improved the health of his spine by working with Dr. Harris and following his advice and treatment plans. At age 49, Pastor Sinclair told Dr. Harris that he wanted to train and run a marathon with his son. When he got to the long run, he could walk, but not run. The tissue in his lower back was cramping. With the support and treatment of Dr. Harris, Pastor Sinclair not only ran a marathon with his son...they both qualified for the Boston Marathon. Pastor Sinclair says, “I have recommended Dr. Harris to my family and friends many times over the years. He has the expertise to restore and repair. His treatments can even rebuild discs. With all of his knowledge, it’s so impressive that Dr. Harris keeps learning so he can help even more people. What I have valued most in our relationship is his involvement in the community and how his interest in helping people goes beyond the local church and our city.” Well respected among his colleagues and the community as a philanthropist and humanitarian, Dr. Steve Harris offers a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with chronic pain or to help improve their overall musculoskeletal function and health. He is known for incorporating new technology and techniques that complement his safe and holistic approach. Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982, and recently celebrated his 40th anniversary in his chiropractic practice. Dr. Harris offers chiropractic care, pain relief, spinal decompression, rehabilitation and so much more. It’s no accident that his patients get results they can see and feel.
