r. Ali Mostaghimi and his wife Sara both grew up in the Houston area. A University of Houston graduate, clinical rotations took Dr. Mostaghimi all over the country, expanding his repertoire of experience to include laser vision correction, managing patients with glaucoma, ocular problems associated with diabetes and hypertension, and other ocular emergencies. After completing his doctorate, Dr. Mostaghimi returned home to establish a private practice. Today that practice, Today’s Vision Cinco Ranch, is one of the fastest-growing and most technologicallyadvanced family optometry offices in Katy! From glasses and contact lenses to dilated fundus examinations and ocular disease management, this father of two is committed to taking care of your family’s eye care needs. Dr. Mostaghimi says, “I have two boys of my own, Parsa and Darian. I’m very conscious of how busy families can be, and how much some children do not like going to the doctor. That’s why our office

is family-friendly, and we encourage you to schedule family appointments if that works better for you. We can take care of everyone at the same time!” Into fashion? Today’s Vision Cinco Ranch is the only office in Katy to offer hot-off-the-runway eyewear...the kind you can only find in department stores. “My wife Sara was blessed with great vision,” says Dr. Mostaghimi. “But she comes into the office just to shop these sunglasses. We carry Christian Dior Runway, Fendi Runway and Gucci Runway. Sara is partial to Dior and Fendi!” This sports-loving doctor is also an expert in sport vision rehabilitation. He uses specialized technology to measure and train an athlete’s visual function. “This is physical training for the eye,” says Dr. Mostaghimi. “Before you physically move, your senses are actively engaged and preparing the mind and body for action. Vision accounts for the majority of information received and processed by your brain. What we

do is measure ten points of function—including eyehand coordination, reaction time and visual clarity— and see where we can improve your performance. Imagine seeing the baseball better, and reacting at exactly the right time to a pitch. We train the eye and body to work together, giving athletes an edge. My son Parsa is my test subject. He’s eightyears-old and while I may be a bit biased, I’ve seen his baseball vision improve!” Sport vision rehabilitation clients range from kids in sports to local professional athletes. Teens are at an ideal age to improve visual skills, and kids as young as seven can benefit. Today’s Vision Cinco Ranch is committed to taking care of all of your family’s eye care and eyewear needs. hinking of adding a pet to your family? Classic Chevy Sugar Land and General Manager Jeff Sebastian remind you that there are a variety of wonderful pets at our local community shelters just waiting for a good home like yours. “Rescue is our favorite breed!” says Jeff. The Sebastian family—Jeff, Tiffany, Grayson, Alivia and Arica—count two rescue dogs among their family members. “Six or seven years ago, we volunteered to foster Buddy,” says Tiffany. “Next thing we knew, we were adopting him. Hunter came to us about four years ago. Just skin and bones. He was afraid to go in a door...any door. The vet said he probably had been hit or kicked for trying to go inside. He still puts the brakes on near doors, but he is doing so much better. We love that we were given the opportunity to give these two a second chance after their difficult start in life.” The Sebastian kids add, “They have filled our home and hearts with love we didn’t even know we were missing.”

t is a truth universally acknowledged among kids: if a little bit of something is good, more is a whole lot better! That’s why Dr. Faisal M. Khan, DDS, of Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental is happy to announce that his entire practice is moving next door to an office twice its original size. “We’re ready!” says Dr. Khan. “And we’re bringing all the fun with us—more surfboards, more under-the-sea excitement, more beach—and more room to wiggle your toes on our ‘beach’.” As a Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist/Diplomat of Pediatric Dentistry with three years of specialized study in child psychology, here’s what Dr. Khan can tell you: “Happy kids make for happy patients. That’s why we go out of our way to make all of our patients feel relaxed, important and cared for. Coming to see us should be fun—and it is. With three kids of my own, I understand the nervousness a child can feel when visiting the dentist. When you turn an entire office into a day at the beach, your child comes in with a smile and leaves with a smile. It’s hard to be nervous when you’re busy having a great time.” Imagine walking into Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental and seeing an even bigger floor-to-ceiling mural. At this new “beach,” patients have their own movie theater room right in the waiting area! Here, exam tables never look like exam tables...they’re actually orange-and-white surfboards. Teeth are cleaned beneath ceiling-mounted TV screens...

so no one gets fussy. Dental procedures are done in the “Turtle Hut” and “Dolphin Cove.” And the biggest surprise is that a lot of grown-ups like going to Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental too—not as patients, but as parents! Though he loves the beach, Dr. Khan did not actually grow up on the beach. He grew up in Detroit and practiced in New York before relocating to the Houston area with his lovely wife, Sugar Land native Samiha. “We’re excited about our new space and can’t wait for you to see it,” says Dr. Khan. “Everyone at Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental is here to make your experience with us as fun and effortless as possible.”

ambridge dictionary defines the word inspiration as, “Someone or something that gives you ideas for doing something.” Its root meaning is to “breathe into.” In the case of Chevella Sampson, a hairstylist of ten years, that breath of inspiration came to her during a deeply moving spiritual transformation. “The Lord placed on my heart the urge to dig deeper,” she explains. “He called on me to study His word.” At the time, she didn’t know how God wanted her to do that. “Yet I was inspired to go to church one morning,” Chevella explains. “There I met a Belhaven University representative who told me that no matter what your course of study, Belhaven will teach you the word of Christ. I could actually feel God speaking to me.” “I was nervous. I hadn’t been in school for 25 years,” continues Chevella. “Would I be accepted? How was I going to manage books, tuition, financial aid? But I wanted to learn more about the Bible, and I knew in my heart that the Christ-based curriculum at Belhaven was the right place for me. Then I called a Belhaven University counselor. It was like she completed my thoughts! All my fears were instantly put to rest. The staff made it so easy. Financial aid was available to me even before

God promised me it would be. I was overjoyed—and most importantly, I knew this was where I belonged.” Today, Chevella has been at Belhaven for two years. “Everybody seems like family. They know your name and they want you to succeed. My professors have an open-door policy. If you need guidance, guidance will be provided to you. But it’s the Biblical perspective that’s super important. It doesn’t matter how smart you are or how much you’ve got it together—or even if you don’t have it together. Having a Biblical perspective in your education not only allows you to expand your career, it fulfills a purpose in life no matter what talent you have. Talent is no good without purpose. And your purpose is to know the word of Christ.” For Houston residents who want to complete a bachelor’s or master’s degree quickly and affordably, Belhaven University is the answer to a quality adult studies program. Both degree programs are tailored to the needs of busy working adults. Belhaven students graduate with the tools they need to stay competitive in today’s global economy, and they do it with all the love and support of the word of God. “Belhaven is everything you expect in a God-inspired learning environment,” Chevella says. “You will feel so at home here.”

Comprehensive Breast Care

that’s Unique to Every Individual T

hey’re the words no one wants to hear, yet one in every eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in her life. Local residents Patti Weber and Camilla Chamberlin are among these women. Both are under the care of breast care specialists at Houston Methodist West Hospital. Like every individual diagnosed, each has her own story. Patti Weber Patti is a maintenance specialist at BP. In July of 2016, she found a lump in her breast. Patti says, “I had a breast reduction when I was 23, so I didn’t have a lot of feeling in my breasts. When I started having pain, I knew something was not normal.” A biopsy on Patti’s daughter’s birthday revealed her tumor was malignant. She was seen the following day at Houston Methodist West. “Chemo never entered my mind,” says Patti. “I wanted to know when I could have surgery and get the tumor out. I soon learned my cancer was triple negative.” Triple negative breast cancer means that the three most common types of receptors known to fuel breast cancer growth–estrogen, progesterone, and the HER-2/neu gene–are not present in the cancer tumor. Although Patti had other options for treatment, she says, “With this revelation, I wanted a complete mastectomy. I didn’t want to think about it, I just wanted to get rid of it. I would have to do chemo first to shrink the tumor, then surgery. My 11-year-old daughter asked me if I was going to die. I told her someday,

Camilla Chamberlin and Patti Weber

but not today!” Patti had options when it came to her mastectomy. She chose to do a DIEP flap reconstruction, where fat, skin, and blood vessels are cut from the wall of the lower belly and moved up to the chest to rebuild the breast. Patti’s DIEP Flap was performed by Houston Methodist West plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Warren A. Ellsworth IV immediately after breast surgeon Dr. Candy Arentz performed her mastectomy on Jan. 28th of this year. The entire surgery took 9 ½ hours. “In this process, I lost my mommy roll and I learned that I love short hair,” says Patti. “What a bonus!” Two weeks after her surgery, Patti got the “ok” to work from home. Four weeks later she went back part time, and by June she was back at work full time.

1in8 women will develop breast cancer. Over 85% of women who develop breast cancer have no family history of the disease.

The good news is that early detection exams such as mammograms save thousands of lives every year.

Camilla Chamberlin Camilla, a laboratory director at Houston Methodist West Hospital, has always done regular mammograms.

Breast Care Team Dr. Kathleen Shadle, radiation oncologist, Drs. Rodger Brown and Warren Ellsworth IV, breast reconstructive surgeons, Erica Esprit, RN, oncology nurse navigator, Dr. Candy Arentz, breast surgeon and Dr. Correna Terrell, breast radiologist When she was requested to return for a second mammogram and ultrasound on Aug. 8th of this year, her first thought was they noticed her huge bruise. “An eight pound weight fell on me while I was exercising,” says Camilla. “But during the ultrasound, they were poking around on my side...not near the bruise.” A biopsy revealed Camilla had a tumor that was ER/PR positive, meaning the cancer cells grow in response to the hormones estrogen and progesterone. “This was for real,” says Camilla. “I met with Kim Collins, a colleague here at the hospital, and inquired about Dr. Arentz. I was seen at 1 p.m. that same day. I underwent genetic testing. I have two sisters and they both have girls. If this was genetic, my choice was going to be a double mastectomy. It was not genetic, so I opted to have surgery to have the tumor removed. I will not lose my hair, which in my mind was a bit unfortunate because my beautician will not cut it. Dr. Arentz told me she will write a prescription for a haircut! I met with Dr. Ellsworth, who showed me pictures of what he can do during my surgery. Dr. Ellsworth will be doing a lift and minimize after the tumor is removed. I will go from a D+ cup to a C!” This interview occurred a few days before Camilla’s surgery. She was looking forward to four weeks of bliss at home. “My house cleaners are coming in the day of surgery, so when I get home the next day it’s all clean. The only disappointing part is my dogs will have to sleep in other rooms!” It’s All About Choices Patti and Camilla had different types of breast cancer, and made very different treatment choices. “Yet the survival rate is the same based on breast conservation or mastectomy,” says Dr. Arentz. “The earlier we catch it, the more options we have to make the best of the situation, because as Camilla indicated, the outcome may affect your treatment decision. Treatment always starts and ends with a multi-disciplinary conference where we all talk about your best possible care and options.

WEST

With a plastic surgeon as part of that team, cancer patients can have their breast reconstructed during a mastectomy, and in some cases, lumpectomy. It’s all about choices and your personal short and long term goals.” Your Patient Navigator is Here to Help! Erica Esprit, the Oncology Nurse Navigator at Houston Methodist West, is the glue that holds this operation together. “She’s your extra set of ears,” says Dr. Arentz. Erica knows every patient by name. She is dedicated to guiding patients through the entire treatment process--providing education, help with expediting appointments, and identifying additional resources such as financial consultation and support groups. “Cancer is stressful enough,” says Erica. “I try to make the process a little less stressful.” Patti and Camilla agree, the collaborative system at Houston Methodist West Hospital is phenomenal. “From start to finish, it’s all very reassuring,” says Patti. “I look forward to every visit!”

Introducing An UpClose Look

SpecialNeeds at

S

ince 1995, UpClose Magazine has been your behind the scenes look at the people behind our locally-owned businesses. Inspired by two area moms, sisters Dior Burns and Tiffany Nachefski, this new section—An UpClose Look at Special Needs—will be dedicated entirely to businesses that provide services to children with special needs. Both of these Clements graduates are raising kids with special needs. Each has pursued a path to help other parents in situations like their own. Dior is the founder of the nonprofit organization Reach For Kids (www.reachforkids.com). She says, “When my son Cameron was nine months old, without warning he started having 20 seizures/day. We did everything under the sun to help him...the Mayo Clinic, ECI, a gamut of doctors and many therapists. Today he has been seizure-free for six years. He has a diagnosis of autism and ADHD. I believe there is a reason we went through this journey. We need to use our experience to help someone else. Most special needs moms are just trying to survive the day...there isn’t time to research resources. Reach For Kids is a onestop-shop to find those resources!”

14 ~ UPCLOSE Katy ~ Nov-Dec 2017

Tiffany’s son Wyatt has severe, nonverbal Autism, Epilepsy, and also suffers from Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis (a rare type of allergic condition) that makes him frequently get sick to his stomach. When Tiffany couldn’t find a weighted blanket that she could wash frequently, she made one herself. This and other improved weighted sensory products blossomed into her small business: Wyatt’s Weighted Wonderland (www.TryMyBlanket.com). Tiffany says, “My blankets are made with machine-washable duvet covers and fully customized to the individual— including weight, fabric and optional aromatherapy. Want the blanket to feature Thomas the Train in a special size? We can make it!” There are many businesses like these that accommodate kids with special needs. “An UpClose Look at Special Needs” will provide you with behind the scenes looks at: What dentist should we see? Can I take my special needs daughter to dance class? Who can I see locally for therapy? And if you know of a local business that should be spotlighted in this section, contact UpClose Magazine at gina@upclosemagazine.com, or call 281-235-0600 today!

Finally, a Place Where You Never Have to Say

“I’m Sorry”

K

by Amy Sharp

aty native Shannon Mazy has worked as an occupational therapist in Katy schools for more than 17 years. Shannon says, “I see a common thread among the parents of the kids I work with: They don’t have a place they can take their kids to have fun. I wanted to solve that... create a place here in my hometown where these kids ‘fit in,’ and their typical siblings and cousins could come play too. I was attempting to open one when I saw an article in the Huffington Post about a place called We Rock the Spectrum. It was my idea! It was working in New York, and it’s a franchise. We opened a Katy location in May of 2016.” “Everything in here is designed for development,” continues Shannon. “But the kids don’t realize it...they just have fun! We have pretend play including trains, a kitchen and a puppet show. The chalkboard wall builds shoulder and wrist strength. There’s fine motor toys and hopscotch, a rope wall, monkey bars, a big trampoline and more for gross motor development. The large swing apparatus has every swing imaginable, and most move 360 degrees. Some of the swings even allow parents to participate with their child.” And the favorite...the 42’ zip line and slide. “Kids glide across and crash, they love it!!” The gym is brightly colored and an open concept, so parents can always see their children. And because kids might get overstimulated, there’s a “Calming Room.” With calm blue lighting, parents can escape to a quiet place, shut the door and deal with a situation when they need to. The multi-purpose room is the site of birthday parties and classes. “A little boy recently had a birthday party here,” says Shannon. “He’s six-years-old and it was his first party ever. He invited a friend he met here at the gym. It was the first time his friend had ever been invited to a birthday party. They were experiencing something normal. That is what we want to do here!” We Rock the Spectrum hosts frequent Parents’ Night Outs and camps. Field trips are also welcome.

The staff includes therapist interns and individuals studying to be special needs teachers. All work and train under Shannon, an occupational therapist. We Rock the Spectrum also employs and invites adults with special needs to come and volunteer. This gym is Shannon’s dream, and the blood, sweat and tears of her family. Her husband Keith is frequently seen around the gym. Her father takes care of the accounting. Her kids, Cassidy (14) and Andrew (11), love to volunteer. Stop in anytime for Open Play and bring your entire family. The Perfect Weighted

Blanket

iffany Nachefski’s four-year-old son Wyatt has severe, nonverbal autism, epilepsy, and a rare stomach condition that frequently makes him get sick. “Early on,” says Tiffany, “a therapist suggested we try a weighted blanket to help calm and relax Wyatt.” Weighted blankets work by applying pressure to the muscles, causing the body to release neurotransmitters—like serotonin and dopamine—that help to regulate mood and produce a calming effect. In a dark room, our bodies further convert that serotonin into melatonin enabling deeper and more restful sleep. That suggestion changed Tiffany’s life forever. As she shopped and searched for a blanket, she became more and more discouraged. “The blankets were expensive and typically came in unattractive fabrics. Most had predetermined weights. When I did find a handmade one-off and could pick the fabric, the weight still wasn’t right and the blanket could not be washed. I have a child that throws up constantly. I could not spend $200-$250 on a blanket I couldn’t wash. Nothing I found was feasible.” Having learned to sew as a child, Tiffany started researching making her own. “I wanted a duvet system. Something that could be taken off and washed, and I could have multiple backup covers ready. Plus, as Wyatt’s favorite things and seasons changed, I could accommodate him easily.” The weighted blanket that Tiffany made for Wyatt was so unique, his therapist was impressed. “She told me I might have something. I

set up a booth at a special needs event hosted by Reach for Kids and they started selling.” Today, Wyatt’s Weighted Wonderland specializes in an array of custom-weighted sensory products. “I’ve made lap pads, neck wraps, seat cushions, bibs and more. If you need it, I will try to make it. A popular option is adding aromatherapy to the blankets. Since the blanket does not get washed (just the duvet cover), I can add crushed chamomile, lavender (or custom requests) into all nonwashable products for added sensory input.” These blankets make you feel like you’ve just received a relaxing massage or a gentle hug. While perfect for anyone, they’re especially beneficial for those suffering from Alzheimer’s, anxiety, ADHD, autism, PTSD, sensory processing disorder and stress. A Natural and Beautiful Look A

by Amy Sharp bout a year ago, Teresa Morris stopped by Vitality Health & Wellness because she heard they carried a whitening toothpaste she wanted to try. Not only did they have the toothpaste, Teresa knew the owner: Nurse Practitioner Lexie Barton. “Lexie and I workout at the same gym,” says Teresa. “I didn’t realize she owned Vitality. At the time, I was getting Botox done by a girl I loved, but she was in Houston and it was getting hard to get there. I have 18-month-old twins, so I need things close to home. Lexie looks good—very natural. That appeals to me. I decided to try her, because I didn’t think she would make me look fake. She did a little Botox between my eyebrows, but didn’t overdo me. I’m 46-yearsold, and I’m not ready to have every emotion frozen on my face. She did such a great job, I kept going back.” In fact, Teresa has been back to Vitality for several services. “I’ve done chemical peels and dermaplaning with Brooke. These services retexturize the skin and really help with the absorption of my ZO skin products, also from Vitality. When I attended their Open House, Nakia did laser hair removal under my arms. It was great.” At Vitality Health & Wellness, you’ll find a comprehensive suite of services that improve the wellbeing of both men and women. In addition to Botox and aesthetics, services include bio-identical hormone replacement, sclerotherapy, medically-managed weight loss programs and cellulite reduction. Teresa trusts the ladies at Vitality with her 18-year-old daughter. “Madeleine wanted laser hair removal, so I gave her sessions at Vitality for high school graduation. She’s doing arms, arm pits, legs...everything!”

my Barta and her family couldn’t be happier with the service and new flooring provided by locally owned Lone Star Floors. “Mohamed Naser (one of the owners) was incredible,” says Amy. “He researched every carpet we were looking at, even getting samples from other stores when his store didn’t have it in stock. He was so warm and caring. Our two and four-year-old kids were running around like crazy in the store. While we looked at samples, Mohamed had them measuring things with measuring tape. My daughters wanted to hug him every time they saw him!” Lone Star Floors completed the Barta’s carpeting in one day. “And it was a lot of carpet!” says Amy. “A total of five rooms: four bedrooms, one upstairs gameroom, plus the stairs. They were an amazing crew. They started at 9am and were done by 4pm...just crazy fast!” After the carpet was installed, Amy decided to go ahead and replace the tile in her home as well. “The tile was also done in one day. There was minimal dust, and everything was super clean after installing tile in two full baths, one half bath and the laundry room.” The family is enjoying their new floors, and also a new addition to the family! “I belong to an animal rescue group, and only recently wanted to foster a dog.
