uscle Maker Grill—the fast casual restaurant cooking up healthier versions of mainstream-favorite dishes that taste great—has arrived in Sugar Land! Locally owned by Paul and Karla Switzer, this healthy alternative to eating fast opens this month in the Kroger shopping center on Sweetwater near Highway 59. With a variety of starters, wraps, sandwiches, bowls, pastas, skinny flatbreads, shakes and smoothies to choose from, you can dine here and feel satisfied. In the mood for Asian? Consider the Teriyaki Stir Fry—grilled chicken breast, portabella mushrooms, onions, peppers, carrots and sesame seeds in a rich Teriyaki sauce over brown rice—at a mere 580 calories. Or maybe your family loves a good dose of Tex-Mex. The Tex Mex Fajita Wrap—fajita grilled chicken breast, sizzling onions and peppers, reduced-fat cheddar cheese, fat-free sour cream and salsa in a jalapeno wrap—will satiate that craving and only cost you 600 calories. There’s Italian inspired entrees, foods filled with Cajun flavors and good ‘ole grassfed cheeseburgers. It’s always healthy, you always know the calorie count, and if you’re counting macros that information is at your fingertips as well. Paul says, “Because everything is cooked fresh when you order it, we can accommodate nearly any request, including low carb, gluten free and vegetarian diets. It’s also easy to substitute or add in more of your favorite protein - Grass Fed Beef, Free Range Chicken, Turkey Meatballs, Fresh Shrimp or Fish.” With a kids menu, organic/low sugar wines, gluten free/low calorie/low carb beers and even dessert on the menu, it’s a great lunch spot and perfect for a family night out too. You can also enjoy this healthy food at home! Paul says, “Imagine you’re sitting around watching football. You could order pizza or Chinese, but you might want a healthier option. We deliver to you! Use our app, visit www.ordermmg.com or give us a call, and an MMG driver delivers to your door with no delivery charge.” Ready for a meal plan? Order a minimum of five meals per week (no max!). Help When You

by Sara Adams
unjukunjamma Koshy, or K for short, is a retired registered nurse. She worked as an ICU nurse for thirty-three years. All of those years of standing and working the floor as an ICU nurse caught up with K about twelve years ago. She developed problems with her knees and in 2004 underwent surgery on her right knee. By the time K retired in 2007, her left knee had become more painful and she started to experience swelling in her feet. Eventually K had surgery on her left knee, but she found she couldn’t stand or sit for long periods of time and the swelling seemed to get worse. This year, K found Dr. Ulises Baltazar through a recommendation from a friend. Her friend had gone to see Dr. Baltazar about her varicose veins and was very pleased with the results. When K saw Dr. Baltazar, she said he was very friendly and his entire staff was so nice. K said, “Dr. Baltazar knew I was a nurse. He took the time to explain my condition and tell me what my options were. He said that correcting three veins should fix my problem. I never felt forced or rushed, he told me the decision was up to me. Dr. Baltazar treated one vein at a time in his office over the course of three days. Overall it was a nice experience. There was minimal pain and I had a quick recovery. There wasn’t any bruising either.”
Dr. Baltazar is a highly regarded vein specialist. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting from issues of the circulatory system and is a leader his field. Board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery, Dr. Baltazar is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. In less than a month after her procedure, K attended a wedding that lasted for eight hours. She was happy to report that sitting and standing was not a problem and her feet didn’t swell. She said, “If I had to do it all over again, I would do it. The results were better than I thought they would be. I am happy to recommend Dr. Baltazar to my other friends. He is an excellent vein doctor.”

e’ve all been there. We pull up to the pharmacy window, pick up our medication, look at the price tag and our jaws drop. Even with in network prices and copays, some medications can break the bank. But there’s good news—really good news! One of the most frequently asked questions Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph., owner of Campbell’s Compounding, receives as a practitioner of compounding is: Can I really save money using compounds? And the answer is, in many cases, yes. “First, it’s important to understand what a compounding pharmacy does,” Dr. Campbell explains. “Compounding is the creation of a prescription drug by a licensed pharmacist to meet your unique needs. For instance, you may not be able to tolerate the commercially available version of your prescription. What we do is customize the strength or dosage, flavor your medication (to make it more palatable to you, your child or your pet), reformulate the drug so that it doesn’t include ingredients like lactose, gluten or any allergens, or change the form of the medication for people who experience gagging or upset stomach when taking a traditional oral medication.” So how does that translate into savings? “When assessing the cost of a compounded pharmaceutical,
8 ~ UPCLOSE ~ December 2017
there are two factors you have to consider,” says Dr. Campbell. “Labor and the cost of the ingredients. The more complex a medication is to make, the longer it takes to make it—and that certainly affects your bottom line. For example, capsules and suppositories are more time-intensive than most creams and gels. At Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy, a lot of our compounds carry high-value, low-cost ingredients...especially if those ingredients are commonly used. If we have to special order, that obviously raises the cost, but we rarely need to do that.” “The best way to maximize your savings is to ask if we have the ingredients in stock, ask if there is a price break for purchasing multiple months of medication at once, and be open to less expensive alternatives. It may not seem like good business practice, but here at Campbell’s Compounding, we really do put your needs first. Let us help you find the most cost-effective way to take your medication.” In addition to customized, compounded medication, Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy carries all commercially available medication as well, making it your perfect one-stop-shop. They also accept and bill insurance. “No matter how much we grow, our mission remains the same Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy as it ever was—family first. And everyone who “If our staff can’t make it… then you probably don’t need it!” comes to Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy is family.” Sugar Land • 281-980-2555 Dr. Campbell, his wife Rakel, and their four 4760 Sweetwater Blvd. Suite 103 children, Cole, Chloe, Caitlyn and Claire wish you the very best of holidays! What’s your superpower? by Olivia Cane
I
Come in as a patient and leave with a super smile!
f you could have a superpower, what would it be? The usual “picks” are invisibility, the ability to fly, super strength or lightning-fast speed. It’s fun to think about, isn’t it? But Sugar Land’s own “Come in as a patient, leave as a friend” dentist, Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S., already has his superpower: putting smiles on faces that may not have had many smiles before! “Anyone who is self-conscious about their smile isn’t going to do a lot of smiling,” says Dr. Lomonte. “If you think about that, it’s just heartbreaking. And since many people haven’t even sat in a dentist’s chair in over ten years, they don’t realize the stunning advancements dentistry has made. At this point, there aren’t many dental problems that we can’t fix affordably and painlessly. If it’s cosmetic dentistry, like yellowed, missing or chipped teeth, we’ve got you covered. If you require something restorative like caps, crowns, porcelain-fixed bridges or implants, you will be amazed by what’s possible. Modern dentistry is nothing short of miraculous. And one of my favorite things is to sit down with someone who was formerly terrified of being in a dentist’s chair...and watch them leave my office grinning ear-to-ear. I love my job like I love my patients.” Now is the best time to do your dental checkup. If you’ve already met your dental plan deductible, the cycle starts all over again (for most people) right after the first of the year. Schedule an appointment now in order to maximize those insurance benefits and use any remaining flex account dollars you may have accumulated. “We truly believe that there is nothing more powerful than a smile,” says Dr. Lomonte. “In fact, one single smile induces the same level of brain pleasure stimulation as 2,000 bars of chocolate. That’s a scientific fact anyone can appreciate. Think of the calories you will save by smiling! If you don’t walk out of our office with a song in your heart to go with your brand new smile, we haven’t done our job. It’s what we live for.” Don’t delay—call today!

t’s that time of year! If you haven’t already, soon you’ll be rummaging through boxes of wreaths, ornaments, figurines and strands of twinkling lights to decorate your home for the most wonderful time of the year. Did you find an unwanted visitor or evidence of unwanted visitors? John Onofrey, owner of local Top 2 Bottom Inspections and BUGCO Pest Control, says, “We see evidence of both insects and rodents in a large majority of the homes we inspect. If rodents have found their way into your house, they are likely to find their way into your boxes of holiday decorations that remain in the garage or attic pretty much untouched for eleven months of the year. You don’t have to see a mouse or a rat to know they’re there...they leave their evidence in droppings, attic trails and urine trails. Gnaw marks, frayed wires and other damage are other sure signs the pests have set up residence in your home or boxes.”
So what can you do? John says, “Rodents can fit in spaces as small as a penny, and exclusion and tidiness are your first line of defense.” Exclusion includes:
•S ealing cracks and holes where utilities and pipes enter your home. • R eplacing weather stripping around doors and windows. • Repairing screens on doors, soffits and windows. • Storing food in airtight containers. • Taking out the garbage regularly. “If vermin evidence is present in your house,” continues John, “we can set out bait stations and traps to not only eliminate the rodents inside your home, but also to help in reducing the outside population.” John started the inspection business in 2003, inspecting properties all over Fort Bend and Harris County. With the rampant pest
and rodent problems in the area, a lot of customers were requesting pest control too. In 2007, John launched BUGCO with longtime friend Chris Millward. John says, “Chris had years of experience in pest and rodent control with a national company...so it was a great fit. We offer inspections and treatment for termites, general pest control, bed bug inspections and treatment, mosquito misting systems and backpack fogging, rodent control and exclusion.” It’s time to pull down the boxes and deck the halls! And if you think there’s a possibly rodents have taken up residence in your garage or attic, give John and Chris a call. “We always inspect and verify you actually have a pest problem before we take any action,” says John. “And we’ll always recommend the appropriate treatment at a reasonable price. That’s a promise!” Happy Holidays and a very Happy New Year from the Onofrey and Millward families!

The Lawyer Who Cares THIS MONTH’S TOPIC:
Planning for the Disposition or Management of Digital Assets
T
he topic of what happens with a person’s “digital assets” and accounts after death or disability has been the subject of increasing debate and importance over the past several years. Fort Bend attorney Margie Connolly says, “Our online lives are growing as complex and diverse as our offline lives. Beyond monetary value, digital assets in estates involve issues of privacy, security and legacy planning. For many people, planning for digital assets is now an important piece of the estate planning puzzle.” Digital assets and accounts may include: • E-Mail accounts (Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, etc.) • Pictures (Flickr, Picasa, Instagram) and video (YouTube, Vimeo) • Document accounts (Google Docs, Scribd) and files (Word/Excel, health records) • Websites, domain names, blogs and web hosting accounts • Social networking accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Google+, etc.) • Music (iTunes, Amazon) and Books (Kindle, e-books) • Devices, such as laptops, smartphones, tablets and associated
Have you considered: • Who can access and control these accounts upon your death or incapacity? • How do your desired representatives get access when that time comes? • How do (or can) digital assets get transferred to your beneficiaries? Margie says, “Federal privacy laws protect us to a point where it’s difficult for our loved ones to take control of our online presence. However, The State of Texas recently passed a set of statutes that supercede federal law for online privacy. With this language in your will and power of attorney documents, your executor or power of attorney does have the authority to request passwords for all of your digital assets when the time comes. I’m advising all new clients to include this language...and if your legal documents are in place, consider amending to include this language!” The Law Office of Margie Connolly provides services for all of your family law and estate planning needs, including digital assets. “If you have a will, power of attorney, divorce or family law question, we are here to help. Wishing you all a very happy holiday and prosperous New Year!”

THE FIT FAMILY BEHIND KOKO FITCLUB
by Amy Sharp
V
eronica Malhiot has been into fitness for about 10 years. “I started out bouncing around between gyms that were close to my house,” says Veronica. “I quit each for many reasons, but usually because I didn’t know what to do or just didn’t like it. Then I found the Koko FitClub location in Katy. I loved it! The machine tells you exactly what to do and keeps you accountable. I told my husband Mark he really needed to check it out.” Mark has been into fitness his entire life. He’s done the gamut of sports, and has been training in jiu-jitsu and Muay Tai striking for the past ten years. Mark says, “I also was really impressed with the Koko concept. Even as a person that works out regularly, one is never quite sure if they should do do one more one more set...or maybe set...or maybe less less weight and more weight and more sets or more weight and sets or more weight and less sets?
less sets? You have no way of knowing what’s most effective. Every Koko program is designed by a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. You never have to worry about if you are doing too much or too little. All exercises are done on one machine, so you never have to wonder if the machine is sweaty or taken. Plus, every program combines cardio and strength training into a workout that is 45 minutes or less!” So taken by the Koko concept, the couple researched the franchise. “We flew to Boston, met with the founders and got on board!” Koko FitClub Sugar Land will celebrate its two year anniversary in 2018! “We have exciting things on the horizon,” says Mark. “Including the Koko X, the free motion machine designed to work functional movement. For those that don’t procrastinate on their New Year’s resolution, we are offering a special discount to anyone that joins before
January 15. When you commit to fitness, we commit to you!” Whatever your goals, make fitness fun like the Malhiot family. Mark and Veronica’s furbaby Murphy competes in dock diving with the North American Diving Dogs. Their daughter Kassidy stays fit through kickboxing and training horses, and Heather is also a student of jiu-jitsu. And a big congratulations to Mark who will earn his jiu-jitsu brown belt this month!

CRYOTHERAPY MEETS
EARTHCRAFT

JUICERY
iCRYO Sugar Land has exciting news. Earthcraft Juicery, the Houston-based company serving up fresh blended fruit and vegetable juices known to help alleviate joint pain and inflammation, is now available in-house at iCRYO Sugar Land! The speciality juices, founded by Jay Arnaez and Victor Tran, are the perfect complement to cryotherapy. Jay says, “Diet means everything. I believe many chronic diseases—diabetes, arthritis, even cancers—are partly a result of malnutrition and toxins which come from the standard American diet.” Victor adds, “The nice thing about juicing is that it can give you a concentrated dose of five or six pounds of vegetables and fruits that people don’t normally get everyday. What people don’t know is that the digestive enzymes from the vegetables and fruits are lost when it’s pasteurized. Our juice cleanses are a great way to start the metabolism and detox the body of those toxins.” Mix that with the benefits of cryotherapy—the use of cold temperatures to reduce inflammation, boost metabolism, and increase energy—and iCRYO Sugar Land clients are discovering a real health benefit. The perfect drink to complement a session might be the Tumeric Lemonade or the Vegan Chocolate Milk, made from almond milk and raw cacao. And because the juice is made on-site, customized one day up to four day all juice cleanses are also available. iCRYO Sugar Land is locally owned by Joseph Uduma. Joseph, Jay and Victor are all committed to improving the health of their clients. “We want to provide an outlet for nutrition—good raw natural organic nutrition— undefiled of any toxins. A 1978 Kitchen Upgraded to 2017! by Marie Page
J
onetta Cherubini’s kitchen had not been completely updated since the house was built in 1978. “We have lived here 28 years. We’ve done some minor work—restained the cabinets, changed the countertop and replaced appliances if they went out—but no major work had been done. We still had 1978 builder’s cabinets!” The name Teri Gilberg (better know as “The Re-Modelista”) appeared multiple times when Jonetta was thinking about gutting and renovating her kitchen. “I saw her many features in UpClose magazine. She was mentioned and highly recommended multiple times in our First Colony community group. So I gave Teri a call.” Teri was Jonetta’s only bid. “She was easy to talk to. While we didn’t change the footprint of the kitchen, she thought of things to make it more efficient. She didn’t just replace what was there, she really put thought into it. I gave her my total wish list. We walked through and she listened to my ideas and threw out suggestions. She was able to verbally lay out what she thought would work. I had a tiny 24” inch oven. She was able to better utilize the space and give me a 27” oven. We increased the storage available by taking the cabinets all the way up to the ceiling.” To aid in design, Teri met Jonetta at different vendors to show her what was available. “At times, what I thought I wanted was not what I actually wanted. Teri was great at explaining what was available, which was all so different from 30 years ago! The old cabinets were standard golden oak. At my age and experience, all cabinets are wood tone. Teri suggested I go lighter in the smaller kitchen, and I went with that suggestion. Plus, I didn’t want to build new cabinets around old appliances, so we
decided to replace all of them and have Teri install everything.” “Construction went well,” continues Jonetta. “Teri’s guys came in and draped everything. They contained the dust, cleaned everyday and hauled the trash away. They were all business. They worked late and got it done. Teri was always available for questions. Once we got started, I had several instances of, ‘I wish I would have done this.’ I would call Teri and she got back in short order. You hear all these horror stories of working with contractors. My experience was refreshing. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.” And the finished product? “I really like it,” says Jonetta. “The colors really open up the small kitchen. We recently went out of town. Coming in after being gone was like seeing it all new again. No regrets! It looks great!”

Introducing
An UpClose Look
SpecialNeeds at
S
ince 1995, UpClose Magazine has been your behind the scenes look at the people behind our locally-owned businesses. Inspired by two area moms, sisters Dior Burns and Tiffany Nachefski, this new section—An UpClose Look at Special Needs—will be dedicated entirely to businesses that provide services to children with special needs. Both of these Clements graduates are raising kids with special needs. Each has pursued a path to help other parents in situations like their own. Dior is the founder of the nonprofit organization Reach For Kids (www.reachforkids.com). She says, “When my son Cameron was nine months old, without warning he started having 20 seizures/day. We did everything under the sun to help him...the Mayo Clinic, ECI, a gamut of doctors and many therapists. Today he has been seizure-free for six years. He has a diagnosis of autism and ADHD. I believe there is a reason we went through this journey. We need to use our experience to help someone else. Most special needs moms are just trying to survive the day...there isn’t time to research resources. Reach For Kids is a onestop-shop to find those resources!”
Tiffany’s son Wyatt has severe, nonverbal Autism, Epilepsy, and also suffers from Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis (a rare type of allergic condition) that makes him frequently get sick to his stomach. When Tiffany couldn’t find a weighted blanket that she could wash frequently, she made one herself. This and other improved weighted sensory products blossomed into her small business: Wyatt’s Weighted Wonderland (www.TryMyBlanket.com). Tiffany says, “My blankets are made with machine-washable duvet covers and fully customized to the individual— including weight, fabric and optional aromatherapy. Want the blanket to feature Thomas the Train in a special size? We can make it!” There are many businesses like these that accommodate kids with special needs. “An UpClose Look at Special Needs” will provide you with behind the scenes looks at: What dentist should we see? Can I take my special needs daughter to dance class? Who can I see locally for therapy? And if you know of a local business that should be spotlighted in this section, contact UpClose Magazine at gina@upclosemagazine.com, or call 281-235-0600 today!

esearch shows the first five years of a child’s life hold the keys to their success. In these critical years, daily activities--talking, singing, reading, playing--stimulate brain development and dramatically influence future health, learning and behavior. Sounds simple, right? Yet many children do not start school prepared. If you’re concerned your child might not be meeting developmental milestones, Kendra’s Korner is a specialized early intervention service for children ages 0-5. Watching your child grow in confidence, independence and intellect while focusing on preschool or kindergarten readiness, pre-literacy skills and social development is Kendra Rydolph’s dream come true. This former Thurgood Marshall High School cheerleader has loved working with kids since working cheer camps and tumbling classes. She also once styled hair and hosted birthday parties at Libby Lu in First Colony Mall. Kendra always thought she would be a teacher, but changed her 16 ~ UPCLOSE ~ December 2017

mind when a sorority sister at Lamar University told her about the speech pathology program. “It was like teaching, but more one-on-one,” says Kendra. “It was perfect.” With a bachelor’s degree, Kendra took a job with the state as a Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant. Her supervisor encouraged her to move into child development. Kendra says, “I trained with occupational therapists, physical therapists and other specialists. We focused on overall development--gross motor, fine motor, personal and social skills, cognitive development and speech--and it was all based on play therapy. I became a Child Development Specialist...I had found my gift!” If you are concerned your child is not hitting developmental milestones, Kendra can come to your home and do a free developmental screening. “Through playing with your child and talking to you, we determine where your child is falling on the developmental chart for their age. If there’s a need, we develop a custom play-based treatment plan. Your child will look forward to our playdates, and I love that I go to work to play!” In addition to in-home developmental play sessions, Kendra’s Korner offers one of the few Zumbini classes in the area. “My twin girls discovered Zumbini on the BabyFirst TV channel. It always held their attention. My classes are held at MajestKids. Zumbini promotes cognitive, social, emotional and motor skill development through original music and movement. It’s the perfect complement to Kendra’s Korner!” Learn more about Kendra’s Korner on Facebook and Instagram (_KendrasKorner_). linical Psychologist Lindsay Asawa and Betsy de Vega, the founder of KnILE Prep Academy and EduCoachNow (ECN), have joined forces to bring you a psychological and educational perspective on topics affecting children today. Coined the “H.E.L.P. Seminar Series,” this free series is designed to help you work with your children and provide them the tools necessary to succeed in school and life. Betsy says, “The H.E.L.P. resource program is designed for both students and parents. These workshops are free of charge. Last
month we covered anxiety. Depression, sensory processing, autism, ADHD and dyslexia are among some of the topics that we will touch on this year. While the seminars are free, we have limited seating and registration is required. Our aim is to keep the numbers down so that each workshop is fully interactive with the attendees. The seminars generally occur the last Wednesday of the month from 11:30 till 1, but may vary. Bring a brown bag lunch and we provide sweets and drinks!” The H.E.L.P Seminar Series is an extension of Knile Center, the different by design school
and tutoring program created by Betsy to meet the needs of students that flourish in settings different from traditional schools, for whatever reason. Betsy says, “We follow the child and his needs, not the other way around.” This selfpaced, content mastery private school serves students in grades 3-12, and KnILE Center’s tutoring program—EduCoachNow (ECN)— is a multiple year winner of the “Best Tutoring in Fort Bend” award. “We are excited to again be recognized as Best Tutoring for 2017!” says Betsy. In EduCoachNow, trained ECN coaches combine cognitive skills exercises with enhanced organizational, study, and test taking strategies. ECN tutoring sessions are always one-on-one so they, too, are customized to meet the child’s educational need. ECN works with students in grades kinder to high school. Betsy and Lindsay recognize that education is not a one-size-fits-all. Join the “HELP SEMINAR SERIES” Facebook Group for information about upcoming seminars. From Silent Nights to Happy Holidays by Amy Sharp

eing alone for the holidays can make every night feel silent. For those who are recently divorced, the absence of a spouse or children during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is enough to give anyone the holiday blues. Bastine Law Group founder Ronique Bastine Robinson and her team of attorneys have made it their mission to practically navigate clients through both the complex legalities of divorce, as well as the emotional journey that accompanies the process. Ronique says, “For many, the holidays are traditionally a happy time. But people not in a good place may shrink away. In collaboration with life coach Gail Armaty we propose some ways to face the holidays, and even enjoy them, if your family dynamics have changed.” • Start a new tradition. “Many transitions from one parent to the other occur around December 28th. If you didn’t have your kids on Christmas Day, celebrate another day! You can still decorate and play holiday music. Plus different events throughout the city run through the New Year. You can still see holiday light shows, plays and performances the
week after Christmas, giving you and your kids the holiday experience.” • Volunteer. “If you are alone, get out of your own space. Volunteering is a great opportunity to not focus on you. The food banks and even your church are usually looking for a few helping hands during the holidays. Plus, volunteering has a way of making one appreciate their own situation a little bit more!” • Travel. “Maybe you’ve been eyeing that cruise for years. Why not jump on board? Or if you haven’t visited distant relatives (even after multiple invites), this year it might be time for a road trip. You just might start another new tradition!” Ronique’s book, From Divorce to Deliverance: Divorce Doesn’t (Have to) Mean Devastation, further walks you through what to expect when involved in a divorce and the changes you’ll face. If you’re expecting many “Silent Nights” this holiday, take heart. “It does get better,” says Ronique. “Your holiday might look different...but Happy Holidays can still be yours.”

THE ONE TO SEE

FamilyEyeOriented Doctor by Amy Sharp
aynette and Mark Clarke have lived in Sugar Land for 35 years. They’ve both been seeing optometrist Dr. Tom Arnold at Today’s Vision Sugar Land for as long as they can remember. Waynette says, “I remember going there when he opened the office. And I honestly can’t remember what eye doctor we saw prior to that, how long we’ve been seeing him or why we switched!” It’s easy to see why Waynette can’t remember...Dr. Arnold opened that office nearly 26 years ago! So why have the Clarke’s gone back to Dr. Arnold year after year, for a quarter century? “Because he is an excellent doctor. Just wonderful and we trust his expertise. Mark has always had pretty bad eyesight and worn glasses. Mine is not so bad. Our kids Amanda and Andrew (now 35 and 32!) inherited Mark’s bad eyesight. They both started seeing Dr. Arnold at a young age...2nd or 3rd grade. I remember Amanda tried contacts first and couldn’t get them in. Three years later Andrew tried them in the 5th grade and
got them in. That was enough for Amanda, she was determined after that! For many years, Dr. Arnold had both of our kids in contacts. In fact, Andrew is still a patient of his today. Amanda keeps up with Dr. Arnold through Fort Bend Fit, the local running club where both Amanda and Dr. Arnold run marathons and half marathons.” Today’s Vision Sugar Land is built on Dr. Arnold’s philosophy of personalized care based on value. He takes time to listen to every patient. Dr. Arnold says, “This isn’t just a job. I care about my patients and think about them often...many times sending emails and texts to follow and Waynette Clarke with their up. And the number one priority I Mark granddaughters Autumn and Olivia Walker. instill in my staff is to ‘Be nice!’ It’s that simple.” Waynette has witnessed all of this first hand. “Dr. Arnold’s staff I’m picking new frames. And we are very, is awesome. Whenever I go in to get new very pleased with Dr. Arnold. He’s so glasses or sunglasses, I never know what family oriented...always asking about our looks good. They are really helpful when kids and grandkids. It means a lot these days when a doctor is interested in your family!” “I definitely recommend Dr. Arnold to anyone,” adds Waynette. “I recently recommended him to a friend at church. Her son works near West Belfort, and she asked if I knew of an eye doctor in that area. I told her he could just come a little further west to Williams Trace and there’s Dr. Arnold!” Dr. Arnold and the staff at Today’s Vision Sugar Land wish you and your family Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!

The Wylie’s Story
L and Bob Wylie have known Hal Elrod of KW (Keller Williams) Southwest since he was a minister at their church. “We love his honesty and continuity of behavior,” says BL. “We trust him. I’m a former real estate agent, and I recently retired from coaching ice skating. But I’m still working at the rink. Bob and I were selling our Greatwood home and building in Del Webb. We needed someone we could rely on to do the legwork for us. Hal was that person.” “Bob, Hal and I put our heads together to get the price right,” continues BL. “We didn’t want any haggling. And while I had experience, Hal made wonderful suggestions on how to present the home. He came in, he was efficient, he set it up...before I knew it the house was on the market. It was easy for us to collaborate and work together. The very first couple that looked at the house fell in love and bought it at full price. This was in October, and our new Del Webb home wouldn’t be done until December. We did not expect to sell it so quickly, but we couldn’t turn down a full price offer. We ended up living with friends for three months!”
“After we sold, a couple at our church used Hal to sell their home. He’s just done a dynamite job for them as well. He’s levelheaded and doesn’t get overexcited. He’s mellow and consistent in his work ethic. You give him a call and he’s right there for you. He has a gentle spirit and a very strong will. He is ever conscious of being professional and takes his job very seriously. Hal gives everything he does 100% effort.” BL and Bob are the proud parents of Paul Wylie, the 1992 figure skating Olympic silver medalist. The couple has been married for more than 60 years. BL continues to work in ice skating (now off the ice!) as the Assistant Director of the Special Needs Program at Sugar Land Ice and Sports, is assisting with the new special needs program at The Aerodrome Willowbrook. Ready to buy or sell? Call the team at KWSW. Bob says, “Hal’s an ace of hearts. A kind man that enjoys his job. Family First! N

obody wants to suffer a “Fa-La-La-La Ooops!” this holiday season. Before hauling out the ladder to string the lights, bring a family member to hold the ladder, don’t over extend, and use extreme caution. Dr. Shannon Orsak, founder of St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms, says, “Every year, thousands of people end up in the ER because they fell and got injured decorating for the holidays....and that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Even though our ER is comfortable, has no wait, and we offer amenities like a coffee bar and TVs, we know you’d rather be home for the holidays!” “As a dad, I know how quickly kids can get into trouble,” continues Dr. Orsak. “Even though we offer pediatric ER rooms without a wait, the best thing would be to prevent an emergency altogether! Mistletoe, holly, and poinsettias are considered poisonous and should be kept out of the reach of children. Tree ornaments, light
bulbs, icicles, tinsel, and small toys are potential choking hazards for small children. If you’re putting bikes, skates, skateboards or scooters under the tree, include a helmet and safety gear. And if you’re on the go this Christmas, before you leave the house remember to blow out any candles and unplug any lights. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), candles start about 11,600 fires each year and Christmas trees are involved in about 300 fires annually.” At St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms, you’ll find everything you’d find in a traditional ER–– board-certified physicians, x-ray, ultrasound and CT, and an on-site diagnostic lab––without a wait! St. Michael’s treats everything from allergic reactions and broken bones to high fevers and chest pain. Dr. Orsak says, “Whenever you and your family need us this holiday, we’ll be ready. Be safe and happy this joyous season...your health matters to us!”

hen the Acosta’s purchased their new home, they decided to refloor the entire house (4,200 sq ft) before moving in. “We researched flooring businesses online,” says Laura. “Lone Star Floors had great reviews on Yelp. We stopped into the Katy store and connected with Matt. We knew we wanted wood tile downstairs and carpet upstairs. I knew what colors I liked. Matt pulled samples and we picked from there!” Lone Star Floors estimated the tile downstairs would take a week and the upstairs carpet would take two days. The Acosta’s wanted to finish the renovations before moving in, but they hit a snag in the plan. Laura says, “The carpet we picked was backordered. Matt worked with the manufacturer on our behalf, and got them to honor an upgraded and in stock carpet at the same price!” During installation, the Acosta’s stopped by every afternoon to check on progress. “The crews always cleaned up before they left,” says Laura. “And they always locked up. They finished in less time than what was estimated. The tile was done in three days and the carpet in one day. We are now moved in and we love it! We get lots of compliments on the floors. I would recommend Lone Star Floors to anyone!” Cousins Mohamed Naser, Ziad Mukhaimer and Imad Mansour opened the doors of Lone Star Floors more than 30 years ago. This family-owned and operated business has enjoyed an A+ rating with the BBB every year of its existence. With a high level of customer service and quality products, more than 75% of their business comes from referrals and repeat customers. s the grout in your bathroom stained to the point where you can no longer get it clean? Do you hate the color of your bathtub? Are you tired of looking at those dated laminate countertops in the kitchen? Holiday guests give you a good excuse to make home updates that you’ve been putting off for years...and you still have time! Jonee and Paul Barnett, owners of local Miracle Method Surface Refinishing, are in the business of working Christmas miracles. They’ll get your bath or kitchen looking modern and fresh before holiday guests arrive. Jonee says, “We can typically fully refinish your surfaces within a two to three day time frame...which means the space in your home will only be out of commission for a few days.” Two to three days? That’s a new kitchen and bath in the time it takes to defrost the Christmas turkey! “It’s a quick and painless process,” continues Paul, “because we aren’t replacing your surfaces, baths or showers...just refinishing them in place. We start with a professional cleaning and surface restoration. This miracle fixes chips, cracks, spots, stains, and lackluster finishes. Any grout is completely cleaned, repaired and sealed, so no more cracking and molding. Then our miracle finish is applied...and your surface is as good as (or better than) new! We can transform porcelain, ceramic, laminate, acrylic or cultured marble surfaces.” It’s easy to see why refinishing is the cost and time-effective alternative to traditional remodeling. And not only do you get beautiful, like-new surfaces...you also enjoy top-notch customer service. Miracle Method Surface Refinishing is proud to be accredited members of the BBB. Thanks to a multitude of satisfied customers, they enjoy an A rating on Angie’s List and have won the Angie’s List Super Service award multiple years.

Tradition and Craftmanship PLAZA FAMILY JEWELERS
Decisions...Decisions by Marie Page
F
or more than a century, the gift of jewelry has stood the test of time. It’s the one gift that will be as appreciated a decade from now as much as, or even more, than it is today...all because you made a thoughtful purchase. But buying jewelry for someone else can also be challenging, unless you’ve discovered Plaza Jewelers—a Fort Bend family institution built on a 25 year legacy. Locally owned by Samir and Marlene Dharia, the expert professionals at Plaza Jewelers know the latest styles, the best values and the pieces that best suit certain personalities. You’ll find jewelry gift ideas not offered in department or discount stores. Head of Marketing Alex Dharia says, “The gift of jewelry ensures your gift is a special one and is remembered long after the parties are over and the decorations are packed away.” Consider the meaning behind these gift possibilities! 1. “You stand the test of time.” Plaza Jewelers carries an extensive array of Swiss watches, and is one of only three Omega watch dealers in the
Houston area. Choose the fine watch he has wanted for years or a pocket watch with his name engraved on the case. For her, an elegant diamond watch she can wear evenings out is the perfect addition to her timepiece wardrobe. 2. “I’m glad you were born.” A ring or pendant with her birthstone or those of both partners is always a meaningful and beautiful gift. 3. “You’re one of a kind.” Plaza Jewelers custom builds jewelry on-site using CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) and 3D wax rendering. What this means is...they work with you and can create anything you can imagine! Maybe there is a piece of bling or a watch you’ve had your eye on for awhile? Create a Plaza Jewelers Wish List. It makes the shopping easy for your family and loved ones. With both financing and gift certificates available, the decisions are easy and this holiday season is sure to sparkle with a gift from Plaza Jewelers!

FUNCTIONAL WITH
FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE by Amy Sharp It’s a vicious cycle. Make a diagnosis, prescribe a drug. Wouldn’t you like to know why you keep getting sick instead of struggling to treat the annoying symptoms? That’s what functional medicine is all about! “Functional medicine means looking at the root cause of why you have symptoms, problems, or a chronic disease,” says primary care physician and owner of Balanced Body Image, Dr. Julia Ward. “By focusing on you as a whole, including environmental and lifestyle factors, I’m able to help treat and prevent chronic diseases. We work together toward a common goal: your optimal health.” Dr. Ward addresses functional health concerns with services like: • Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) – Unlike conventional hormone replacement therapy that utilizes synthetic or animal-based hormones, Dr. Ward prescribes hormones that are identical on a molecular level to hormones that occur naturally in our bodies. The result can make you feel and look better. • Treatment for adrenal fatigue – Dr. Ward helps the adrenal gland function better, eliminating that general sense of tiredness and stress. Treatment is usually a combination of natural supplements and IV nutritional therapy. • Intestinal health – Dr. Ward helps patients remove toxins from their diets, repair damaged intestinal linings, and restore healthy gut bacteria. With “leaky gut syndrome” particles escape from the intestinal tract into the bloodstream, causing inflammation throughout the body. This can impair the body’s ability to fight diseases and cause a host of issues such as allergies, skin problems, poor performance and weight gain.
• Genetic testing and IV nutritional therapy – It can be difficult to guess which supplements we need in order to feel better physically and mentally. Dr. Ward takes the guesswork away by looking at how our genetics affect our ability to detoxify, generate energy and affect mood. IV nutrients include high dose antioxidants such as glutathione along with high dose vitamin C and other key nutrients. • Botox® & fillers – Sometimes it helps to feel younger on the outside in order to feel young on the inside. Dr. Ward offers Botox® and other fillers to give skin a more youthful appearance. She also offers micro needling, chemical peels, and Obagi skin care products to help refresh the skin.
As a wife, mother of five, and practicing physician, Dr. Ward knows how difficult life can be when you don’t feel like yourself. She has her own functional medicine success story. “I was very fatigued and run down. Functional medical tests uncovered that my fatigue was in part due to an MTHFR genetic mutation...where I process B vitamins less efficiently. By treating this condition and utilizing hormone replacement, I feel 100% better. If you don’t feel right, I’m confident I can do the same for you.” Take an active role in your health instead of letting your health control your life. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Ward today!

Here’s What
Family Means To Us by Olivia Cane
F
amily doesn’t stop at the folks who are related to us. It includes the people in our lives who want us to be in theirs. Many of these “extended family” members belong to our same community, share many of our same challenges and hopes for the future, and want the same things that we do: mutual respect, camaraderie, and the security of knowing we all have each other’s backs. These are the driving principles behind Alan’s Plumbing, a family-owned and operated business that opened its doors more than twenty-seven years ago. Owned by master plumber Alan Burkhalter, Alan’s sons have followed in Dad’s footsteps. The boys have been riding the truck along with him since they were eight or nine years old. Today, with a journeyman’s license, both Beau and Luke work for their father full time running their own truck. Alan’s son Jake plus the highly trusted Jaime and Trevor all hold the apprentice plumber’s license. The crew is complet-
ed by Alan’s brother Chris and Jeff Johnson, also journeyman licensed plumbers. When you call in, Alan’s wife and the boys’ mom Jennifer answers the phone. Together, they get the job done right, saving you money wherever they can. “We are all residents of the community we serve,” explains Alan. “To us, that makes you family. And the holiday season is the perfect time to remember that with family comes a certain responsibility. That’s why we offer the same level of courtesy, honesty and professionalism to all members of the Alan’s Plumbing family. And that includes pricing.” “Unfortunately, when a big national corporation shows you their ‘Plumbing Price Book,’ they’re only showing you their prices, not other companies’ prices. Not true at Alan’s Plumbing. Whether you call us to fix a sink, a toilet or a water heater, we don’t give you one price up front and then a higher one later on. We’ve staked our whole reputation
on doing the best work at an honest transparent price.” “Don’t let yourself fall for glitzy deals and big promises from companies that don’t come through for you,” says Alan. “You could be paying twice what’s actually fair. We hate hearing the horror stories. All of us at Alan’s Plumbing are more than your neighbors. We’re family. We care about this community and all the people who live in it. That bond holds us accountable to you and all the things that make our Fort Bend County area one of the best places to live. And we’re going to make sure you feel taken care of from the minute you call the office.” Never overspend on plumbing again...give the Burkhalter family a call today!

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY
Before and After
X-Rays-WOW
B
by Sara Adams
onnie Yentzen has led an active life. She and her husband do a lot together, including traveling and daily walks. Earlier this year, she tore both the medial and lateral meniscus on her right knee, requiring her to have major knee surgery this past May. Even though she followed her orthopedic surgeon’s directions and worked diligently during physical therapy, Bonnie did not recover as quickly as she expected. “I have been dealing with pain and problems since the surgery,” says Bonnie. “I was limping due to the injury and the limping has sent my spine out of alignment, causing problems with my Sciatica, making the limping worse.” Frustrated and determined to get back to her previous level of activity, Bonnie sought the help of a new orthopedic doctor and made an appointment with Chiropractor, Dr. Steve Harris of Sugar Land Health Center. Bonnie had never met Dr. Harris before but she was aware of his good reputation and experience. “Dr. Harris was very thorough,” says Bonnie. “He did a full set of x-rays on my first visit. He showed me just how out of alignment my neck was due to a car accident in my past. He noted other issues with my spine and then developed a treatment plan that would complement the work I was doing with my orthopedic doctor. Dr. Harris sees the big picture. He says, ‘Your health is our number one priority.’” In less than a month, when Bonnie reported that her sciatic pain was almost gone. Dr. Harris suggested they take a new x-ray so they could see what progress had occurred on her spine, and the before and after x-rays prove that a picture is worth a thousand words. Bonnie says, “Dr. Harris was so excited that he called his staff in to look at the x-rays.” This January, Bonnie and her husband are looking forward to resuming their love of traveling. She says, “I know I am still a work in progress…and thanks to Dr. Harris, I am making great progress. A friend recently told me, ‘You must be feeling a lot better because you don’t have pain written across your face.’” Well respected among his colleagues and the community as a philanthropist and humanitarian, Dr. Steve Harris offers a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with chronic pain or to help improve their overall musculoskeletal
