PROTECT YOUR SKIN

Dr. Filiberto Cedeno Laurent

Protect Your SKIN

Crow’s feet. Blotches. Spots. When you don’t protect your skin, you’re getting more than a tan.

A Scan That Can Save Your Life You could be putting yourself in danger daily. One million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed annually…it’s the leading cause of cancer in the United States. Dr. Filiberto Cedeno Laurent at Houston Dermatology and Plastic Surgery wants you to know, “Annual full body exams by a board-certified dermatologist can catch problems early...when they’re easily treatable.” The bad news? Melanoma can be deadly. But skin cancer due to sun exposure is largely preventable. Use sunscreen daily and seek shade during the highest sun hours from 10-4. Even Hollywood stars have turned to spray tans for the bronzed summer look. After all, tanning beds increase the risk of melanoma by 75%. If you do have abnormal moles or suspicious spots, Houston Dermatology and Plastic Surgery offers the latest in dermatology technology. Dr. Cedeno Laurent 2 ~ UPCLOSE Katy ~ Feb-Mar 2018

If you have done the damage and need to turn back the hands of time, Dr. Cedeno Laurent has you covered!

says, “We use dermoscopy (magnified examination with polarized light) to evaluate all suspicious lesions. With this technology, we can better distinguish benign from malignant (cancerous) lesions, especially in the diagnosis of melanoma. We can spot things we can’t see with the naked eye, and start treatment earlier than ever before.”

Because Your Hands Don’t Lie Are your aging hands giving away your age...making you look older than you feel? You work hard to keep your face and body looking their best. Your hands deserve the same attention! “Discoloration, thinning dry skin, loss of fat and volume, and visible veins can make your hands look aged and unattractive,” says Dr. Cedeno Laurent. “Laser treatment is an extremely effective option for hand rejuvenation. This CO2 laser enhances production of collagen in your hands by creating tiny zones of thermal energy. The result is tightened skin, improved tone and texture, and brown, red and pink spots and wrinkles all go away! We do before and after pictures. The difference is unbelievable!”

The Best Technology in Dermatology

Get Your Feminine Groove Back (and don’t pee yourself!) No one wants to talk about the effects that aging and childbirth have upon the feminine anatomy, but the problem of laxity in vaginal muscles and loss of volume in the vulva is more common than you might imagine. Do you pee when sneezing or coughing? Have you avoided trampolines for years? Dr. Cedeno Laurent says, “ThermiVa (radiofrequency) and CO2 lasers are advanced new non-surgical treatments that painlessly tighten vaginal muscles that may have become lax during childbirth or as a result of the aging process. In these procedures, the heat energy revives and rejuvenates atrophied tissue inside the vaginal wall, triggering increased production of collagen and elastin, two essential building blocks of skin tissue that contribute to plumper, firmer skin cells. The procedure takes about 30 minutes and requires no anesthesia or downtime. Many patients report greatly improved sexual pleasure and satisfaction after just one treatment...and they no longer pee themselves when sneezing or jumping!” Schedule a Consultation! Dr. Cedeno Laurent practices both medical and cosmetic dermatology. He believes in a multi-modality approach. He listens to your concerns and desires, then goes over any risk factors and the side effect profile of each potential treatment. Then Dr. Cedeno Laurent tailors a plan to your skin type, taking into account both your budget and allowance for downtime. Houston Dermatology and Plastic Surgery was founded by plastic surgeon Dr. Eric Humble with one mission in mind: to help patients find happiness in the way they look and feel. Dr. Cedeno Laurent believes in this philosophy, and is excited to bring even more options to the practice with the latest advancements in dermatology. Schedule a consult today!

Spotting skin cancer early could save your life. Check your skin regularly and seek immediate advice with any concerns. Look out for the ABCDE of melanoma:

A = ASYMMETRY: when one half of the mole doesn’t match the other B = BORDER: when the borders are irregular, ragged or blurred C = COLOUR: when the colour varies throughout and/or has no uniform pigmentation D = DIAMETER: when the diameter is greater than 6mm (but could be smaller) E = EVOLVING: changes in the mole over variable time: weeks, months or years

S

ince 1995, UpClose Magazine has been your behind the scenes look at the people behind our locally-owned businesses. Inspired by two area moms, sisters Dior Burns and Tiffany Nachefski, this new section—An UpClose Look at Special Needs—will be dedicated entirely to businesses that provide services to children with special needs. Both of these Clements graduates are raising kids with special needs. Each has pursued a path to help other parents in situations like their own. Dior is the founder of the nonprofit organization Reach For Kids (www.reachforkids.com). She says, “When my son Cameron was nine months old, without warning he started having 20 seizures/day. We did everything under the sun to help him...the Mayo Clinic, ECI, a gamut of doctors and many therapists. Today he has been seizure-free for six years. He has a diagnosis of autism and ADHD. I believe there is a reason we went through this journey. We need to use our experience to help someone else. Most special needs moms are just trying to survive the day...there isn’t time to research resources. Reach For Kids is a onestop-shop to find those resources!” Tiffany’s son Wyatt has severe, nonverbal Autism, Epilepsy, and also suffers from Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis (a rare type of allergic condition) that makes him frequently get sick to his stomach. When Tiffany couldn’t find a weighted blanket that she could wash frequently, she made one herself. This and other improved weighted sensory products blossomed into her small business: Wyatt’s Weighted Wonderland (www.TryMyBlanket.com). Tiffany says, “My blankets are made with machine-washable duvet covers and fully customized to the individual— including weight, fabric and optional aromatherapy. Want the blanket to feature Thomas the Train in a special size? We can make it!” There are many businesses like these that accommodate kids with special needs. “An UpClose Look at Special Needs” will provide you with behind the scenes looks at: What dentist should we see? Can I take my special needs daughter to dance class? Who can I see locally for therapy? And if you know of a local business that should be spotlighted in this section, contact UpClose Magazine at gina@upclosemagazine.com, or call 281-235-0600 today!

One Life HEALTH SOLUTIONS

Bringing Special Needs Families Hope for a Better Life by Amy Sharp

“O

ur dad has been our hero since we were kids,” says Dr. Joshua Gomez, who co-owns One Life Chiropractic with his brother, Dr. Nathan Gomez. “He’s had eight heart attacks, double and triple bypass surgery and several stents. Traditional medicine had done all it could, and we could see our hero becoming an old man. Seven years ago, we decided to go back to school and become chiropractors to help Dad.” Mission accomplished, today Dr. Josh and Dr. Nathan have spent thousands of post-graduate hours becoming experts in spinal reshaping, and each has performed more than 20,000 adjustments to date. Clients include most everyone, but they cater to individuals with special needs and their families. The doctors say, “A misalignment in the spine causes interference of the brain’s signals to the body...and the body can’t regulate. Those with special needs are more sensitive to this interference. If we put the body back the way it was meant to be, it takes care of the rest.” Signs that the spine might be misaligned include: favoring one side of the body, leaning forward or backward while walking, toe walking, pigeon toed, a leaning posture, or a head that leans forward and isn’t aligned on the shoulders. “Bring your child or individual with special needs, and we take it slow and figure out the puzzle. Patience and comfort are key, and we are experienced in the hard cases. We’ve successfully treated quadriplegics in chairs, patients with autism, down syndrome and severe behavior issues.” A treatment plan at One Life Chiropractic includes objective measures the doctor’s are striving to meet. “No two plans are the same, and we always follow up with exams to check progress.” Most insurance plans are accepted and financing is available. “The way we look at it, every person that walks through that door is Dad. We would move mountains to get what you’re looking for...we want our patients to win.”

Both families—Dr. Josh, his wife Sara and baby Ross; Dr. Nathan, his girlfriend Devon and son Ryan—live here in Katy. DENTAL Health: Pro Tips for Parents

How To Win the Toothbrush Wars

hings that are easier to do than getting your child to brush their teeth include: becoming an instant millionaire by wishing really hard, making an iPhone out of tin cans and string, and cooking a pot roast on the engine of your car. That should give you some idea of just how awesome you are for even trying! But is there anything a parent can do to make the whole process less daunting, and dare we say...fun? Dr. Faisal M. Khan of Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental not only has a thriving dental practice, he has three children of his own. “Your battles are my battles,” he explains. “And it’s true...as a parent you have to brush your child’s teeth until the age of seven. But the good news is you have far more influence than you realize. Playing hardball with your kid is not the way to win. And as tough as it may be to think creatively when you’re tired after a long day of work and parenting, your good work will pay off in the end.” Since modeling good behavior is pretty much the key to all parenting, it’s no surprise that letting your child watch you floss and brush is your first line of defense. “Children learn by imitation,” says Dr. Khan. “If they see you doing something that looks fun, they’re going to want to do it too.” Purchasing or creating your own calendar with stickers your child loves is another way to win the toothbrush wars. Every time your child has successfully brushed his/her teeth (with your help, of course), they pick out a new sticker to put on the calendar. Fill up a full month with stickers, and you can reward your child with a new toy or adventure. But one of the most effective (and potentially humorous) ways to get your child to brush is...wait for it...letting your child brush YOUR teeth! “It’s hard not to grimace,” laughs Dr. Khan. “But in many

6 ~ UPCLOSE Katy ~ Feb-Mar 2018

cases, it works. You smile through your child’s clumsy but sweetly endearing attempts to brush your teeth, and then you get to brush theirs. It’s best not to use gobs of toothpaste, a little goes a long way. Sometimes it’s the texture and flavor of toothpaste that make kids avoid brushing, so be sure you’ve found one that works.” Dr. Khan and his warm, friendly staff at Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental are here to help you through every stage of your child’s development. As a board-certified pediatric dentist, diplomat of pediatric dentistry, fellow in special needs dentistry, past president of Houston Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and winner of “Best Pediatric Dentist” in Sugar Land, Dr. Khan’s got you covered. A

community this size needs a voice... something that reflects the broad opinions, lifestyles and way we live. But more importantly, a community is made up of people. And naturally, people have stories. What do your kids think about their schools? Where’s a good place to find a dentist? How about that new place off 99? Our aim is for you to pick up this magazine and have answers to all of those questions. I created UpClose Magazine back in 1995 in an effort to help promote area businesses. A city filled with diverse and flourishing local businesses creates a stronger local economy that is more immune to economic downfalls. As a shop owner myself, I felt there was a better way to communicate to homeowners what the area had to offer in regards to goods and services. With that idea in mind, UpClose Magazine was taken from concept to reality with the

huge leap of faith that both readers and area businesses would embrace and support my idea. Thank you for continuing to strengthen our community by buying local. If our angle seems a little feel-good or touchy-feely, it’s only because we’re being honest. The people in these pages are our friends, neighbors and co-workers. They could have picked anywhere to live and do business...they chose to do it here. That speaks volumes for them already! Are you or do you know a candidate to be featured in our next issue? Contact UpClose Magazine. There is a story behind every business and smile...and we would like to help tell yours!

ohn Beisty and his family have been seeing Dr. Mostaghimi at Today’s Vision Cinco Ranch since they moved to the area back in 2011. John says, “Since it’s an ideal location (Grand Parkway and Cinco Ranch), and they take almost all insurance plans including mine...I decided to give Today’s Vision Cinco Ranch a try.” And that decision, that very first appointment, changed John’s life. “I’m not a candidate for LASIK,” says John. “I’ve worn contacts since I was 15 years old. But I was constantly getting infections under my eyelids from a condition called GPC. The underside of my eyelids would look like cobblestone, and the condition would move my contact lenses around, causing headaches and balance problems. His first question: ‘Have you ever worn daily contacts?’ I had always worn monthly...no one had ever suggested daily. I said ‘Sign Dr. Ali Mostaghimi me up!’” Dr. Mostaghimi explains, “Giant papillary conjunctivitis, commonly referred cobblestone. Moving Forward After Harvey

r. J D. Woods, also known as Des, has been farming most of his life. This Katy area man has operated his successful family rice business for over 60 years, just as his parents did before him. But Hurricane Harvey flood waters changed not only the landscape of the farm, but flooding came inside the Woods’ home...lots of it. “The whole house had flooded, 6500 square feet,” says Des. “My wife and kids have lived in that home for 51 years, and never had a flood. The tax day flood came close, but not like this. Anywhere from four to 14 inches of water was in the house.” While some of the flooring in his home was terrazzo tile, he found himself needing to recarpet about 2800 square feet. Local Lone Star Floors entered the picture. Des says, “My daughter suggested the place, and I have been there before to get samples. It was convenient and I decided to give them a try.” A friend that’s a decorator and Lone Star Floors employee Matt helped the family choose carpet colors. “They measured and helped us find, pick out and purchase what we wanted to use. We replaced a majority of the carpet with one color, and one large room in a different color. We now have stain proof carpet. We would definitely recommend Lone Star for any carpet project. As a matter of fact, we bought the home next door which had flooded and we had Lone Star Floors out there yesterday to bid on it.” In addition to the devastating flooding inside the Woods’ spacious home, over 30 to 40 inches of Harvey rain destroyed the rice crop in October. Even though it was a setback to his family business, Des still agrees, “The rice business has been very good to me and my family.” Locally owned and operated by cousins Mohamed Naser, Ziad Mukhaimer and Imad Mansour, Lone Star Floors opened its door more than 30 years. “We’ve

And they don’t really tell you about the enormous truckloads of love either, but that’s something you’ll definitely discover for yourself! Fortunately, when it comes to actually caring for your kids—or in this case, your kids’ teeth— the best dental care is right here in your neighborhood. Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist Dr. Shilpa Chandiwal, D.D.S. would love to be your family’s best friend. This month is National Children’s Dental Health Month, and Dr. Shilpa is always available to give you some terrific advice on how to best prepare your child for that very first dental check up. “We recognize that first visits set the tone for a lifetime,” says Dr. Shilpa. “That’s why it’s so important to establish a positive dental office relationship with your child right away.” Dr. Shilpa encourages that all children have their first dental check up at 6 months of age. DENTIST LOCATIONS CARE Your child may not have teeth at this point, but for a first time mom, you will find out how to get through the teething stage as well as gum care during this anxious time. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry says the child should have established his or her dental home before their first birthday. “Your involvement is absolutely essential,” says Dr. Shilpa. “If you’re nervous, your child will be nervous too. Together you will both find out that this does not have to be a scary stage in your child’s life. ichard Knox, an independent insurance agent at Dagley Insurance who deals solely in business insurance, met True Fix A/C & Heating owner Gerald Svetlik through a BNI group. About a year ago, Richard contacted True Fix to do maintenance checks on his home A/C and furnace. “I had an A/C company in the past, but as I came to know Gerald, I really liked that his was a long-standing family business.” For his first maintenance appointment, Richard called the True Fix office to set up a time. “When they were on their way, they called and let me know,” says Richard. “Then, when the technicians arrived, they first took care of the area...protective covers and they protected my floors by covering their feet like surgeons. They explained to me what they were going to do, and I showed them where my equipment was. When I inquired about certain things, the technicians were friendly, professional and patient with their answers. They took their time, but didn’t take too much of my time...they got it done. The True Fix technicians were some of the best I’ve seen. That was something I did not anticipate, but it was a nice add. Anytime I speak to Gerald, he is very passionate about his business. I discovered he has very good workers that uphold his beliefs!” True Fix was established in 1972 and has been located in the Katy area for more than 40 years. As Richard discovered, True Fix is family-owned and operated and has received many awards for customer service. They hire no contractors. Gerald says, “Our technicians are factory trained to diagnose, repair, maintain and install air conditioning and heating systems. Many of them have been with us so long we consider them part of our family!” True Fix is a BBB Gold Star Award recipient, a member of the Katy Chamber of Commerce, and they belong to a prestigious group of contractors called Trane Comfort Specialists. “Backed by more than 100 years of innovation, Trane products are the best on the market,” says Gerald. “We pair Trane’s quality products with our own 100% performance guarantee. Right now is a great time to upgrade your system...before the brutal summer hits and we get busy. You’ll enjoy off season pricing and you may be eligible for 0% financing or Trane instant rebates.” Both Trane and True Fix are proud sponsors of the Houston Texans. Well now you high level of customer know what momma meant when she said, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” service, the agency Randy and Kim Stacy, owners of Fulshear continues to grow. Insurance Group, Inc. say, “We call those teaser rates, and they are really misleading. They aren’t real quotes. They aren’t even estimates. They’re using a ‘bait and switch’ tactic because if you call that agency and tell them you are bringing a check for that premium amount, they won’t take your money. They can’t deliver the goods for that rate. They need more information to provide you with a real quote. Insurance companies determine their rates using a lot of different factors, including your age, credit history, insurance score and insurance history, the length of time you have been with one insurance carrier or if you have a history of jumping from one carrier to another every year. The insurance companies want to know how many people will be living in the home, if you have a trampoline, a pool or a dog. You may also receive discounts based on your profession and level of education. There are so many factors that go into determining your rate that the teaser rate on the postcard can’t deliver. Most of the teaser rates we have seen show minimal coverage, and we find that’s not what people want. Why give up your great coverage to save a hundred bucks? By calling Fulshear Insurance, you can keep your great coverage and still save money.” Randy and Kim opened their insurance office in Fulshear in 2011.
