e started out as a mobile DJ when he was 18, but talk to Jason Hane and he says the music business helped build his successful technology business— Halcyon Technologies—into what it is today. “I started building the systems I would use as a DJ, then eventually did commercial sound work, installing speakers and sound systems for properties like restaurants, churches and clubs. I was just a big fan of all kinds of music, every genre.” But the hours were demanding. Nine at night till five in the morning. “I was in the club scene, and didn’t like the hours...especially since I had just married. I wanted more of a nine to five daytime job.” Jason left the DJ business and started working for a home entertainment company, where he worked for three years as the lead technician. Eventually the company went

H a l c y o n Technologies opened in 2009. “My wife Lana and I researched the name and thought it was a good conversation starter. It’s different. It’s a Greek word that means peace and prosperity. I wanted to have a business name that I could eventually take in any direction I wanted.” Today, his company is all about consumer electronics. “We design, sell, install and service home theatre systems, home automation systems, lighting control, security and camera systems, phones and wireless networks...we do everything! We also have voice activated technology and motion sensor technology available. We can install entertainment systems and more where there’s currently not even a light switch on the wall!”

Within a few months, Jason’s business grew so much he needed to add several technicians and sales personnel. “Right now I have eight employees, including a general manager and an operations manager who helps with scheduling, dispatching, and so on.” The core of the business has been referrals and the company enjoys steady growth, including the recent acquisition of local Home Theatre Evolutions. “We would love to talk with you and plan out your electronics...we’ve handpicked every item we carry for its quality and value. We offer free in-home estimates, without any surprises or hidden fees.” Jason, Lana and their daughter Aggie are your neighbors and reside in our community. Friends for

Life

A

by Sara Adams

lice Tannehill and Sandy Hesser have been making tamales for their families at Christmas for almost as long as they have been friends. They met more than thirty years ago in college and they have cooked a lot of meals together over the years. Their husbands and kids have benefited from their culinary adventures. Alice says, “Whenever we cook, we talk about everything: school, our jobs, the kids. This year is the first time we talked about compression stockings.” Sandy smiles and nods, “I had no idea I had varicose veins. I never had any bulging veins in my legs, but when I told Alice that my legs felt heavy and tired and I got severe leg cramps in the night, she said I might have varicose veins and she suggested I see Dr. Baltazar.” Varicose veins run in Alice’s family, she’s familiar with the signs and symptoms. She had surgery in the ‘90s to treat her own varicose veins. It had been a while, but she had noticed she was getting tired again when standing too long. Alice says, “When you have varicose veins, you get used to the sluggish, tired feeling in your legs. It wasn’t until last year, when my sister had a problem as a result of the poor circulation in her legs that I decided it was time to take action. I had heard so many good things about Dr. Baltazar, I made an initial consultation with him and I have been very pleased with the results. Since my vein ablation therapy, I seem to have more energy and I don’t get tired from being on my feet too long.”

Dr. Ulises Baltazar is a highly regarded vein specialist. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting from issues of the circulatory system and is a leader his field. Boardcertified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery, Dr. Baltazar is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. Following the advice of her friend, Sandy did see Dr. Baltazar and found out she suffered from collapsed veins. Dr. Baltazar was able to treat the problem over the course of three days. The first day after her last treatment, Sandy and Alice were on their feet all day shopping and preparing for this year’s Christmas tamales. And yes, they were wearing their compression stockings. Sandy says, “We were on our feet all day and were really tired, but the only thing that did not hurt was our legs. Now we both recommend Dr. Baltazar every chance we get.”

r. Eric Humble, his wife Dr. Lin, and the entire staff at Houston Dermatology and Plastic Surgery would like to extend a warm congratulations to Logan Lester, our 2018 Miss Texas USA. A buyer’s specialist for Team Sansone at the Sugar Land RE/MAX Fine Properties office, Logan is thrilled. “It’s been a week since the pageant and it’s all still so surreal!”

Logan grew up in Greatwood. A few years ago, while Logan was a freshmen at Texas A&M, she started interviewing doctors about a breast augmentation. “I feel everybody should feel their best,” says Logan. “I wanted something small and proportionate to my body that would make me feel more confident.” Having graduated from high school early, Logan was only 17 when she started interviewing doctors as a freshman at A&M. Logan says, “A few doctors said, ‘Sure! Let’s do it next week.’ But I was a few months shy of my 18th birthday, and I knew they weren’t supposed to do that. Dr. Humble was different. He told me I needed to wait until I was 18 and then some. He was extremely ethical. I also felt he really listened to what I was wanting to do per-

manently to my body. I wanted small, and I felt he would do what I wanted. I also love his wife and admire the way he speaks of her. He’s just very family-oriented and gives a really good vibe.” Logan had picked the perfect place. From dermatology to plastic surgery, vein treatment, aesthetics and even skin can-

cer, the handpicked staff at Houston Dermatology and Plastic Surgery is a meeting of the minds perfectly suited to help you realize your own vision of herself in a professional—yet warm and inviting—setting. Dr. Humble says, “Tell us what’s bothering you and we’ll start small. Like I did for Logan, we will explore and explain the best options for you. Some of those might be surgical, but a lot aren’t. We have injectables, facial rejuvenation and body contouring all in our AAAASF certified surgical center. Whatever your treatment plan, our team is with you every step of the way.” “My breast augmentation is the only plastic surgery I’ve done,” says Logan. “And I absolutely recommend Dr. Humble. I know many of my friends have seen him. He’s confident, conservative and ethical...qualities that really stand out to me.” Logan extends a huge thank you to the family at Houston Dermatology and Plastic Surgery, RE/MAX Fine Properties, and all of her supporters as she dives into this year of service as Miss Texas USA 2018!

THE ONE TO SEE

When Your Child has a

Wandering Eye B by Amy Sharp

rooke Helmcamp has a lazy eye. Her mom Bridget noticed it when she was little. “It would happen when she looked far away,” says Bridget. “Like when riding in the back of the suburban...she would look far away and that eye would drift.” Bridget sought out an eye doctor, and since the age of six Brooke has been under the care of Dr. Jocelyn S. Horiszny, an optometrist at Today’s Vision Sugar Land. Lazy eye, or amblyopia, generally occurs in early childhood. Dr. Horiszny says, “The brain does not fully acknowledge the images seen by the amblyopic eye. Sometimes this occurs because one eye is more farsighted, nearsighted, or has lots of astigmatism. Brooke has lots of astigmatism in her left eye. Her mom recognized a common symptom- a

wandering eye. Other symptoms include eyes that may not appear to work together and/or poor depth perception. If left untreated, the brain will learn to ignore the image that comes from the lazy eye.” Amblyopia almost always affects only one eye, but may manifest with reduction of vision in both eyes. “Neuroscience has proven that the human brain can change (neuroplasticity),” continues Dr. Horiszny. “That means lazy eye is treatable; we can teach the brain to use that eye. We corrected Brooke’s astigmatism and treated her lazy eye with office visits and prescription glasses, and Brooke has experienced great improvement over the years!” When she was in the 5th grade, Brooke made the switch from glasses to contacts. Bridget says, “She was old enough and

wanted to play softball without the glasses. Dr. Horiszny made it easy...Brooke popped them right in. It’s what we really like about Dr. Horiszny: She’s very personable and really explains things to the kids. She talks to them and talks to me so that we all understand. She’s very nice and Today’s Vision Sugar Land is a very friendly office. My husband Rodney and Brooke’s twin sister Bailey also see Dr. Horiszny for corrective lenses. Our son Reid sees her for regular checkups, and I plan to take Ryder next year when he’s in kindergarten. As for myself, I don’t have any eye issues...but I’m getting to the point where I need readers!” Now in the 7th grade, Brooke continues to successfully wear contacts and is into tumbling and volleyball as well as softball. Dr. Horiszny says, “It is estimated that three percent of children under age six have some form of amblyopia. While lazy eye treatment can still be effective at moderately young ages, very early detection and treatment offer the best chances for improvement. Like Brooke, many kids with lazy eye go on to play sports or do whatever it is their childhood heart desires. My recommendation is that if you suspect your child may have an amblyopic eye, have it checked by an eye doctor as soon as possible.” Today’s Vision Sugar Land 281-242-2020 15337 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, TX 77478 www.2020sugarland.com

usan Russell was introduced to Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services just over three years ago when she got married. “My husband had used them for years,” says Susan. “And since we’ve been married, we have stuck with them.” Why? “Because they are super easy to work with,” says Susan. “I receive a text message reminding me a couple of days before my scheduled cleaning. If I need to make any adjustments or change my time or day, I just send a text back. They are very flexible. On the rare occasion my cleaning team can’t come on the scheduled day— say during the holidays—they always ask to make a change and work with me. The system works really well and is very convenient, and the cleaning is very thorough. If I want to focus on an area or do a deep clean, I just have to ask. The team is always very pleasant and they get the work done in a timely manner. I feel I can trust them coming into my home, and I know how long to expect them to be at my house. When Stephanie Googled contractors, Teri Gilberg (better known as “The Re-Modelista”) came up at the top of the list. Stephanie had also seen Teri’s many articles in UpClose magazine. “I gave her a call, and she came out that same day,” says Stephanie. “I was really happy with what she discussed and recommended. I was impressed that she came the same day, and she was able to start in a couple of weeks. I didn’t call anyone else, and here we are!” Stephanie had a vision and knew exactly what she wanted. Stephanie wanted something different, something that would set her house apart. She wanted shades of gray and navy. “I needed help finding just the right shades of gray and navy that would match the new flooring,” says Stephanie. “When not sure how to match my exterior brick and flooring with my color scheme, Teri recommended bringing in a Sherwin Williams paint specialist to discuss it.” Stephanie’s remodel was extensive. Teri coordinated a new roof, windows and fence. Both the exterior and interior were painted, new floors put in throughout, cabinets painted, new tile in the kitchen and guest bathroom, the gas fireplace and logs were replaced with an electric fireplace, the never-used formal dining was converted to a setting room, plus new countertops, vanities, a master soaker tub, new toilets, faucets, light fixtures, door knobs and door stops, and even a new kitchen sink! “The outside siding was painted gray with white trim to really make it pop. The front and back doors were replaced and painted navy, and new white windows really give the house an updated appearance. The colors from the outside transition to the inside. The bottom kitchen cabinets are the same navy as the doors, with coordinating quartz countertops that transition to white subway tile backsplash to white cabinets above. Teri recommended we knock down the raised bar in the kitchen

to create more counter space. It was a perfect recommendation! I love the extra space.” During the construction, Stephanie and her 10-year-old son stayed in the house as much as possible. “We did stay in a hotel off and on for a total of about 8 days, but Teri had a great plan. We started upstairs and worked our way down, saving the master and kitchen for last. We did have some Harvey-related supply delays, but overall everything went smoothly and pretty well stayed in budget. Some items I ordered myself and others I went with Teri’s recommended local vendors.” The result? “This was a huge project and the result is incredible!” says Stephanie. “The house doesn’t look anything like it used to. It’s a completely different home with a completely different feel. Teri was great to work with and always readily available. She came by the house daily to ensure things were moving along smoothly. I absolutely recommend Teri to others. Actually, when I tell everyone that Teri transformed my house, they don’t know her by name, but they do recognize her as the lady with arms crossed or as the Re-Modelista in UpClose magazine.”

Moving Forward After Harvey

M

by Donna Reed

r. J D. Woods, also known as Des, has been farming most of his life. This Katy area man has operated his successful family rice business for over 60 years, just as his parents did before him. But Hurricane Harvey flood waters changed not only the landscape of the farm, but flooding came inside the Woods’ home...lots of it. “The whole house had flooded, 6500 square feet,” says Des. “My wife and kids have lived in that home for 51 years, and never had a flood. The tax day flood came close, but not like this. Anywhere from four to 14 inches of water was in the house.” While some of the flooring in his home was terrazzo tile, he found himself needing to recarpet about 2800 square feet. Local Lone Star Floors entered the picture. Des says, “My daughter suggested the place, and I have been there before to get samples. It was convenient and I decided to give them a try.” A friend that’s a decorator and Lone Star Floors employee Matt helped the family choose carpet colors. “They measured and helped us find, pick out and purchase what we wanted to use. We replaced a majority of the carpet with one color, and one large room in a different color. We now have stain proof carpet. We would definitely recommend Lone Star for any carpet project. As a matter of fact, we bought the home next door which had flooded and we had Lone Star Floors out there yesterday to bid on it.” In addition to the devastating flooding inside the Woods’ spacious home, over 30 to 40 inches of Harvey rain destroyed the rice crop in October. Even though it was a setback to his family business, Des still agrees, “The rice business has been very good to me and my family.” Locally owned and operated by cousins Mohamed Naser, Ziad Mukhaimer and Imad Mansour, Lone Star Floors opened its door more than 30 years. “We’ve

THE

PHILOSOPHY

A KW (Keller Williams) Southwest Experience

A

The Wilson’s Story

bout a year ago, Sam Wilson saw KW (Keller Williams) Southwest agent Verna Johnson’s business card at a local fitness center and picked it up. Sam says, “I had known Verna when I was a teenager.” Sam and his wife Nakeysha were in the market to purchase a property to renovate and create their dream home. They called Verna to help. Keysha says, “We simultaneously listed our existing home and were looking for a house. Verna was instrumental in helping us stage our home. She removed things and recommended paint, modifications and repairs that would both attract buyers and give us a better return on our investment. In looking for a home, Verna was helpful with the things we wanted, and even the things we did not know we wanted!” “We started looking at properties,” says Verna, “and Keysha and Sam found one they fell in love with. Through research, I pointed out that the home was overpriced and we should go in with a lower offer. We were in competition when we submitted the offer, and the seller decided to take the other offer. Sam and Keysha were devastated, but I encouraged them and told them that anything could happen. The neighborhood they were looking in had low inventory for their price range and style...so I started knocking on doors. Within a couple of hours I found two homes that were not yet on the market but looking to sell. We started negotiating with one of the unlisted properties over the next 48 hours...when the agent from the

original property reaches out to me to see if my clients were still interested. Freshly hurt, the Wilsons wanted to harshly refuse the offer of interest. I had a heart-to-heart with them and encouraged them to not let their emotions do the thinking. They took that into consideration, stopped their current negotiations and re-submitted an offer on their dream home...which was accepted below list price within 24 hours.” “Verna is a master at the negotiating process!” says Sam. “And we appreciated her unconventional methods in helping us find a home. We couldn’t have done it without her. Using her experience, she made sure we understood the full scope of our options and the pros and cons of each option. Then we were able to make an educated decision.” After closing, Verna helped the Wilsons connect and negotiate with contractors to renovate the home. Verna has also helped them purchase another property to remodel and flip. Keysha says, “She helped us stage the house and put it on the market, and then held an open house. We got a full price offer, and the home was only on the market for three days!” Sam adds, “We’ve recommended Verna to Keysha’s aunt who is relocating...she actually closes on Thursday. It really helps to have good people like Verna working hard on your side!”

Launching Special Needs

Kids

into

Adulthood by Amy Sharp

“The

brain continues to develop until age 25,” says Richard Kelly, Head of School at Launch Academy—the local boutique private school for children of various learning challenges and abilities in grades six through 12. “We see how much we can get out of it.” Richard founded Launch Academy seven years ago when he became discouraged by changes in school curriculums. “My wife and I had taken in a young man with autism. His school was moving to an online learning concept. Like a lot of special needs children, this young man would not have done well in that atmosphere. What we’ve done at Launch Academy is create a hands-on environment that integrates job training into a school setting. We focus on kids that are college bound, but may be delayed socially or in academic areas. We want these students to graduate to adulthood, not their parents’ sofas.” The curriculum at Launch Academy includes

a fantastic art and music program, where the kids play Top 40 songs in small bands. All students take shifts in the on-location coffee shop, learning real world job experience. They earn money for everything they do, and each Monday includes a field trip to the store to buy lunches for the week. “They are learning the basics of money and how much food is needed for four days (Friday is pizza day!)” Every high school student is encouraged to take classes for dual credit at a local community college or Houston Baptist University. “We provide transportation, help them track the syllabus and provide tutoring and study halls. It may seem scary, but we want every student to try a class. Sometimes it takes that push into a new setting to really learn independence and be successful.” “Our goal is for our students to do things the way the world does them,” adds Richard. “We don’t give a lot of excuses for their disability, we work around their disability. Visit our campus to learn more!”

Experience Launch Academy, get to know the staff and see if it’s a good fit at Summer Camp! Two four week sessions available. Each includes academic classes, fun themes and lots of field trips. Everyone welcome. Visit www.launchacademy. info or Launch Academy on Facebook for more information!

Your Locally Owned And Operated

Licensed Plumber by Olivia Cane

C

hoose your plumber wisely. Hiring the wrong plumber can result in dramatically higher cost and future problems because the problem isn’t fixed right the first time. You’ve heard similar horror stories: A young professional in a brand new condominium flushes her bathroom toilet one morning and the bathtub starts filling up with raw sewage. Panicking, she calls the first number she can Google, a “truck guy” who isn’t a licensed plumber and therefore isn’t bonded or insured. In his zeal to fix the problem, he disconnects the toilet from the floor, causing raw sewage to flood the bathroom floor and trickle down to her all-white living room. She ends up calling a real plumber, and then a professional restoration company to sanitize her home. Unfortunately, because she used an unlicensed “plumber,” she has little in the way of legal recourse. Lesson #1: Some guy working out of his truck is not necessarily a plumber.

“A licensed, bonded and insured plumber would never let something like this happen,” explains master plumber Alan Burkhalter of Alan’s Plumbing, a family-owned and operated business. “We know because we’re the plumbing company people call to clean up botched plumbing jobs. Rookie mistakes can and do happen to guys who haven’t done their time in the field. As licensed plumbers, we go through grueling examinations of our skills, knowledge and experience before receiving our licensure.” With the dawn of 2018, Alan’s clocked nearly 30 years in the plumbing business. His brother Chris is also a master licensed plumber. His boys, journeymen Beau and Luke, work for their father full time and run their own trucks. Alan’s third son Jake—like highly-skilled Jaime and Trevor—holds an apprentice plumber’s license. Longtime employee Jeff Johnson is also a journeyman licensed plumber. The boys’ mom and Alan’s wife Jennifer handles the

phones. They’re a team in every sense of the word, on and off the field. “We’ve staked our personal and professional reputations on the great work we do here,” says Alan. “Fair and transparent prices and a job done right the first time. All of us live in the area where we work—and have for three generations. My sons graduated from Elkins High School. This bond holds us accountable to you, your family’s health and happiness, and all the things that make our Fort Bend County area one of the best places in the nation to live.” Moral of the story? When you need a plumber, don’t roll the dice and hope for the best. Call the best...right from the start. Like Alan says, “Our job is taking care of you.”

ccording to the American Cancer Society, in 2018 there will be an estimated 1,735,350 new cancer cases diagnosed and 609,640 cancer deaths in the United States. We all know someone affected by this horrible disease. Local couple Ivan and Star Hand have known many. Star lost both grandparents to cancer, an aunt to breast cancer and another aunt to ovarian cancer. A close girlfriend and another girlfriend’s husband both recently passed away from renal cancer. Ivan’s lost both grandfathers, his father and his sister to the disease. His brother currently has cancer. “Cancer is unfortunately part of our family,” says Ivan. And because it hits so close to home, Ivan and Star are proud to sponsor the American Cancer Society’s Fort Bend event: Couture for the Cause. Star says, “I love Couture for the Cause because it’s a wonderful evening out watching gorgeous cancer survivors strut the runway in designer fashions. They feel confident and look beautiful. They give you hope. Couture is fun, fashionable and chic. It’s full of fabulous food from local restaurants and tons of great items to bid on. But like so many people, we get so focused on the work itself that we forget to take care of the one doing all that work: ourselves! Next Stop... I won’t spread flu to my patients or my family. Even healthy people can get the flu, and it can be serious. Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine. This means you. This season, protect yourself - and those around you - by getting a flu vaccine.

What to Do with the Flu by Marie Page

T

he CDC has been monitoring flu for 13 years. For the first time ever, the CDC has announced that as of the beginning of January, every part of the continental U.S. showed widespread flu activity. Fort Bend County has been no exception. Fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle or body aches, headache and fatigue are all symptoms of the flu. But how do you know if it’s the flu or a cold? Dr. Shannon Orsak of St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms says, “Most cases of the flu have more severe symptoms and a more sudden onset than symptoms of a cold. The flu may also cause a fever of 101 or more. Here in Fort Bend, the flu season usually runs from October through April...and as most of you know, it’s going around!” You’ll want to know as soon as possible if you or your kids have the flu...or just the sniffles. The most common method for diagnosing the flu is an “antigen” test which can

be administered by your doctor’s office. But when it’s after hours or the weekend, you can’t wait. Most antiviral medications must be taken within the first forty-eight hours to be effective. A St. Michael’s lab technician can process your test which is then evaluated by a St. Michael’s Emergency Room doctor. “If you do have the flu,” says Dr. Orsak, “we can prescribe meds and get you to feeling better. We offer separate rooms for children, for infectious diseases, and for general emergencies...and we get you treated without a wait. We’d always rather wait on the patient than have a patient wait on us. If you do have the flu, please avoid work, school and going out in public. And because germs can live on any surface for two hours or more, it’s important we all wash our hands and faces often. We can work together to stop the spread of flu this season!”

St. Michael’s accepts more than 200 insurance plans, including Cigna, Blue Cross, United, and Humana. Your insurance MUST pay in-network benefits at the ER of YOUR CHOICE whether the emergency room you choose is “in-network” or “out-of-network.” At this time St. Michael’s, due to governmental bureaucratic decisions, is unable to participate in Medicare, Medicaid, or Tricare.

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

“I Can Continue My Active Lifestyle... Without SURGERY!!”

R

by Sara Adams

onnie Walls is 73 years old and loves to work. He says, “I retired twice and I didn’t like it. I’m not a retirement person. I plan to work until the good Lord takes me home.” He and his wife, Terry, moved to a 55+ community a few years ago and enjoy their new friends and active adult lifestyle there. Between golf, swimming, cards games and socials, Ronnie says, “You can become so active you have to pace yourself.” All that activity came to a stop when Ronnie passed out and was rushed to a hospital recently. The emergency room doctors reviewed his cat scan and referred him to a local specialist. After an additional MRI and an exam, the doctor recommended spinal surgery right away. Ronnie postponed making a decision about surgery. Having had success with chiropractic care when he was in his twenties, Ronnie wanted to explore that option before deciding to have surgery. When Ronnie told his daughter Rhonda that he was looking for a chiropractor, she said, “No, you don’t have to look for a chiropractor, you’re going to see Dr. Steve Harris.” Rhonda had met Dr. Harris through their work with Rotary International and knew he was the chiropractor to take care of her dad. For the past three years, Ronnie had been bothered by recurring pain in his neck and shoulders that migrated down the middle of his back. Sometimes it was so bad he couldn’t even play golf. When he first saw Dr. Harris, Ronnie had a 1½ inch curve in his spine and was in intense pain. After working with Dr. Harris for two months, Ronnie has no pain in his neck and shoulders and the curve in his spine has been corrected by 99%. He is not on any pain medication. Ronnie says, “Dr. Harris has the best chiropractic office I’ve ever seen. He and his staff do a fantastic job. I have always believed that surgery should be the last resort. With Dr. Harris’s help I can continue my active life without surgery. I drive 25 miles one way from Pasadena to get to Dr. Harris in Sugar Land, and I would recommend Dr. Harris to anybody.” Well respected among his colleagues and the community as a philanthropist and humanitarian, Dr. Steve Harris offers a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with chronic pain. The benefits of his treatment include an improvement in overall health and musculoskeletal function. Dr. Harris opened
