“I definitely recommend him.” by Sara Adams

rleen Glancy has spent her entire career teaching children. She has been a special education teacher for almost 50 years, working with children with special learning needs as well as children with dyslexia. In 1983, she owned a Montessori school in Missouri City for 11 ½ years. In 1994, she went to the public school system as a special education teacher. Today, Arleen still works with dyslexic children, offering private tutoring as well as helping parents understand how to advocate for their children in the public school system. A few years ago, Arleen started to have some back issues and was experiencing some pain in her legs, including some pretty severe leg cramps at night. She consulted her neurologist Dr. Irfan Lalani and he referred her to Dr. Ulises Baltazar. From her very first consultation, Arleen said she felt very comfortable with Dr. Baltazar and his staff. “Dr. Baltazar is very easy to work with. He doesn’t just talk in medical terms, he talks to you like a friend; he really listens to you and keeps you focused so he can solve the problem. He put me so at ease. I’ve never been to a doctor who is so full of life and so passionate about helping people.” Arleen was surprised to find out that the back pain she was feeling was a result of deep vein insufficiency. Dr. Ulises Baltazar is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery, and a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein
Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. He is a highly regarded vein specialist with extensive experience working with conditions resulting from issues of the circulatory system. Dr. Baltazar was able to treat Arleen’s venous insufficiency in his office. After her procedures he prescribed a pneumatic pump to be used daily and recommended she wear compression stockings to keep the fluid from collecting in her lower extremities. Arleen says, “When your legs are aching you lack energy, you feel sluggish. I learned the hard way, if I don’t use the equipment regularly, I’m going to have problems. When I use the machine and wear my compression stockings my legs feel much better.” Arleen is enjoying her retirement in Del Webb’s Sweetgrass 55+ community. She has shared Dr. Baltazar’s name with some of her neighbors and says, “I definitely recommend him.”

We live in a ‘stay connected’ world, and the Stingray is onboard with the Chevrolet MyLink system. With this touch-screen display, you can send and receive texts, play music and more! Jeff says, “The Stingray features the awesome 6.2L V8 engine and provides up to 460 horsepower. Trust me, it’s a technological marvel. We are talking zero to sixty in 3.7 seconds. And because the

For every year they’ve been in existence, Classic Chevy Sugar Land has been awarded the General Motors Chevrolet “Dealer of the Year” award. even years ago, when Abby Amundson was 16 years old, she had a sight-threatening infection in her left eye. “I wore my contacts on a plane trip home from England,” says Abby. “The next morning, I could hardly open my eyes. They were irritated and super sensitive to light. I was in excruciating pain.” Abby went to see her family eye doctor, optometrist Dr. Tom Arnold at Today’s Vision Sugar Land. She says, “Dr. Arnold immediately realized the seriousness of the situation, and he knew I needed specialized care. He got me in to see a specialist who did a culture. The infection was so aggressive, I had to alternate two different types of eye drops every 30 minutes prior to getting the culture results, including through the night. After the culture results, I needed

Today, Abby is a school teacher and grateful for her sight. “I’ve had a few recurring infections since then in my other eye. Fortunately, they were not as aggressive and Dr. Arnold took care of treating them. I don’t wear contact lenses as often, and if I do I wear dailies and I never sleep in them. I definitely recommend Dr. Arnold to everyone. He actually was one of my neighbors growing up. I would see him running in the neighborhood. He’s an avid marathon runner, and I love that he is so passionate about health in his own life. He’s just a really great person!” Dr. Arnold says, “If you suspect an eye infection, like Abby, you should visit your eye doctor as soon as possible. She was in grave danger of losing the sight in her left eye.” “I can’t stress enough how important it is to take care of your contacts and take care of your eyes,” adds Abby. “Losing vision in my left eye—which also happens to be my dominant eye—would have changed my entire life. My doctor did a needle biopsy. I got the call that I had breast cancer. I just about passed out. I’m a healthy person...I run marathons. I did not expect this, especially after all the single parent drama. I was really taken aback. I decided to do the Angelina Jolie special before she did it...take it all off. My father died of colon cancer. My older brother has had cancer most of his life. Cancer is in my family.” Having had implants before, Dorothy thought reconstruction would be similar. “It hurt like hell for four or five months!” says Dorothy. “But I’m a tough woman, I knew I would get through it. I had just started dating Dane, and he took care of me. I was lucky—no chemotherapy or radiation— but I had to take tamoxifen for five years. I experienced side effects, including brittle hair, dry skin and I was cranky.” Dorothy’s five year date—the day she got off the pills—was December 31. She survived it. “No one expects to get cancer, but I didn’t let it bring me down. And I owe a debt of gratitude to Dane. He didn’t have to stay with me...a single parent with cancer. But he was instrumental in my recovery and I couldn’t have done it without him.” In 2015, Dorothy’s doctor asked her to be a model in The American Cancer Society Couture for the Cause fashion show. “My first thoughts were...I’m an accountant. I don’t wear heels! But I saw a good cause. I felt like everybody around me was getting cancer, so I did it.” At this year’s event, Dorothy is chairing the Honors and Memorials Committee. Dorothy says, “If you have a loved one or a friend in your life who has fought, overcome, or tragically succumbed to this dreadful disease, you can honor them at the event.” Visit https://acshph. ejoinme.org/CoutureforCause to arrange a donation.

anice Gil’s home was built 30 years ago. “We’ve lived here for 17,” says Janice, “but the kitchen was all original.” Having seen several recommendations for Teri Gilberg (better known as “The Re-Modelista”) on her neighborhood Nextdoor, Janice gave Teri a call to see how much a complete kitchen remodel would cost. Janice says, “As soon as I met Teri, I knew she would do the work. I just felt really comfortable and confident in what she had to say. She showed me pictures in magazines of work she had done before, and I loved how it looked!” In fact, one of the kitchens Teri showed Janice was the same footprint as Janice’s kitchen. “It was exactly what I wanted,” says Janice. “Teri and I did go shopping to look at different options, but the kitchen ended up nearly the same. I just have a different backsplash. I actually bought a backsplash on my own and then had second thoughts, so I called a designer to help me pull everything together. Then Teri and her crew gutted my kitchen to the studs. Today I have new appliances, cabinets, countertops, backsplash and lighting.” Teri estimated the work at Janice’s home would take three weeks. “Start to finish, the process was wonderful,” says Janice. “The crew came in each day and did everything they could to protect my floors and the rest of the house. Then they got to work. Everything was left clean at the end of each day. Teri touched based every evening to let me know what was going on and what to expect the next day. We did end up with the two January ice days during construction, but counting working days
only, the kitchen was finished one day early. That is awesome!” In the business for many years, Teri has built a very large and satisfied customer base behind her motto of, “She gets the job done!” How? Teri takes timelines and budgets seriously. Her crews work like a well-oiled machine. Teri even helps with brainstorming your design and shopping for materials, whatever it takes to get it done and arrive at a finished product you will love! Count Janice among Teri’s highly satisfied clients. “I love my new kitchen!” says Janice. “I keep thinking there must be something I wish I could change, but there really isn’t. I’m happy with everything!” When asked if she recommended “The Re-Modelista” to others looking for home renovations, Janice gave a resounding, “Yes! otherhood is a hands-on job. Most moms don’t have a lot of time for themselves, and even less time to dwell on things like post-pregnancy stretch marks. Yet the embarrassment of knowing they are there keeps many women covered up at the beach and the pool, making stretch marks not an “issue” exactly, but an annoying area of concern. Until recently, women had to accept post-pregnancy, post-pubescence, or post-weight-gain stretch marks as “just one of those things,” but Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. of Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy has a solution that works quite well for his patients. “You don’t have to live with the effects of stretch marks or scars.
Topical compounding can be an even better alternative to prescription or non-prescription medications.” So what exactly is a compounding pharmacy and how does topical compounding work? “Every patient is different,” explains Dr. Campbell. “That’s why a ‘one size fits all’ approach to prescribing medication isn’t always effective. What a compounding pharmacist does is mix just the right dosage, strength, form or even flavor of a pharmaceutical drug so that it’s perfect for you. No allergens, no fillers, no side-effects. You can think of it as a designer medication.” “For problems like stretch marks or scars, a compounding pharmacist can prepare topical gels or creams that reduce the appearance of the skin’s imperfections. Extra ingredients can be added to decrease redness and inflammation as your skin heals.” Another benefit to using a topical cream Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy or gel is that oral medication takes longer “If our staff can’t make it… to reach any area of pain or discomfort. then you probably don’t need it!” Some oral medications may also lead to an upset stomach, but a topical delivery Sugar Land • 281-980-2555 method has no gastrointestinal side effects. 4760 Sweetwater Blvd. Suite 103 “It’s a terrific way to take your medicine,” says Dr. Campbell. “Call today to discover Houston • 713-668-4833 how to have your prescription customized. 6603 Kirby Dr., Houston, TX 77005 We’d like to welcome you to the better www.campbellscompounding.com world of compounding!”

Imelda’s Insight Cleaning Tip: Did your teenager forget to cover a bowl of queso in the microwave? Maybe a baked potato or a bowl of pasta and sauce exploded all over the inside. Don’t despair! Imelda says, “Before cleaning the microwave, get a small glass or a bowl of cold water, add a few drops of lemon juice and microwave at full power for about five minutes. The steam from the water helps loosen dried food and the lemon juice helps cut through grease...and odors. Remove the glass or bowl (be careful, it’s hot!) and wipe down the inside with a solution of white vinegar and water or your favorite non-toxic cleanser.”

Having a baby changes everything, even the way you use your plumbing system. If you don’t take the proper precautions, your plumbing system could harm your little one, or your little one could damage your plumbing. Get started by following these five plumbing tips for new parents. by Olivia Cane
eam Burkhalter of Alan’s Plumbing would like to introduce the newest branch of their family tree—future superhero, Wyatt Burkhalter! He may be young now, but it’s only a matter of time before he buckles on a plumber utility belt and starts slinging socket wrenches with the best of them. Proud parents Chelsea and Luke Burkhalter actually met at a plumbing supply store, so you might say utility belts and socket wrenches run in the family. Alan’s Plumbing is a family-owned, familyrun business. Master plumber (and now doting grandfather) Alan Burkhalter heads the team. The lovely Jennifer Burkhalter answers the phones. Their sons Luke and Beau are journeyman licensed plumbers. Their other son Jake is an apprentice working towards a journeyman license. Longtime employee Jeff Johnson is also journeyman licensed, and Jaime and Trevor are the other two Alan’s Plumbing apprentices. Alan’s brother Chris is their second master plumber. For forty years, Team Burkhalter has been serving the community it loves. In the spirit of continuing that service, the Burkhalters would like to share some essential plumbing tips for new parents.
1. “Never flush baby wipes,” says Alan. “Unfortunately, they don’t disintegrate the way toilet tissue does, which means they can create major sewage backups. The best method of disposal is to wrap them up in the used diaper and stick them in the trash can. Better still, buy one of those specially made odor-resistant cans.” 2. Put a lock on your toilet. “You can’t imagine the damage one small toy dropped by two small hands can do to your plumbing,” explains Alan. “There are a lot of toilet locks on the market. Find one that fits your toilet.” 3. Install a water softener. “Our area has extremely hard water,” says Alan. “Not only does it strip your skin of its natural oils, it creates corrosion and calcium deposits throughout your plumbing system. A water softener will remove harsh minerals from your water, keeping your baby’s skin softer, laundered clothes softer, and baby shampoo easier to lather.” 4. Keep baskets in all your drains. “Kids like to stuff toys down sink drains too. To prevent them from doing major damage, plastic drain baskets can be purchased at most
dollar stores. Be sure to get one for every drain in your house. If you want something longer-lasting than plastic, purchase metal ones from your local hardware store.” 5. Install GFCIs in bathrooms and kitchens. Alan says, “Most newer homes have them, but if you have an older home, your outlets might not. A GFCI monitors the flow of electricity and stops the flow if there is any loss of current. Essentially, it prevents someone, such as your child, from suffering an electrical shock if they accidentally touch a wire and water at the same time...so it’s a good idea make sure you have them before your child is old enough to use the water.” “Your family is our family, too,” says Alan. “On behalf of our littlest member, Wyatt Burkhalter, let us make sure your family members are as safe and comfortable as possible. They deserve it!”

One year I even helped in his booth at the Classic Chevrolet Chili Cookoff to help raise money for the Sugar Land Police Officers Association, but he was not my dentist…until last May. It took moving out of town and having a bad experience with a new dentist to make me realize I should have been seeing Dr. Lomonte all along. I drive 3 ½ hours one way because I trust Dr. Lomonte. I like his staff and I appreciate his down-to-earth advice and wisdom. With more than 35 years experience under his belt, I have faith in his judgment. The Shah’s Story
(Keller Williams) Southwest agent Ross McEathron met Texas Children’s Hospital ophthalmologist Dr. Shah years ago. Ross says, “A client referred him to me. He was moving to Houston from Philadelphia to accept his position at Texas Children’s Hospital. At the time, Dr. Shah decided to buy a home closer to the hospital to keep his commute short.”
But the recent Hurricane Harvey flood waters made Dr. Shah and his wife Sobia make a move. Sobia says, “The water did not come in to our home, but it was literally inches away. We decided to buy in Sugar Land. We asked Ross to help us buy another home, because his services never stop. My husband calls him to ask for advice and he’s always there. He handles every query you might have.” The Shah’s found a home in Sugar Land they loved, but together with Ross the home buying team felt it was overpriced. Sobia says, “Ross was always in contact, with every issue or delay, he handled everything.” Ross adds, “In the end, we were able to negotiate the price down to a much more reasonable level and put together a deal everyone was happy with.” And with their new home closed on, just as Dr. Shah and Sobia experienced before, the service from Ross and his KWSW team

They brought a water vacuum and fans. They stayed until late in the evening making sure everything dried. When we needed a housekeeper, we texted Ross for suggestions. He got back with us right away. Even when Ross is on holiday, he takes the time to talk to us if we call! I told my husband we need to let Ross rest. He is such a kind person, always willing to help.” Thrilled to now be residing in Sugar Land, the Shah’s have turned their attention to their previous home. “We are trying to decide if we want to sell or turn it into a rental property,” says Sobia. “Either way, we want to remodel it ourselves...and of course we have turned to Ross for advice. He has helped us in so many ways. We’ve recommended him many times and will continue to do so!” KWSW promotes a culture of caring, giving and teaching, a culture exemplified by the Shah’s experience. TREATING PSORIASIS AND ECZEMA FROM THE INSIDE OUT by Amy Sharp or years, both psoriasis and eczema have been treated from the top down using steroid creams. But while the steroid cream may be masking the symptoms, it’s not controlling the problem. Rosenberg Dermatology—our local satellite location of the esteemed Houston-based Heights Dermatology & Aesthetic Center—is excited to offer a new class of medications that have revolutionized the treatment of these chronic conditions. Certified Physician Assistant Celia Vaclavik says, “Biologics are innovative new medications that target specific parts of the immune system. They are taken internally to control the condition, either by injection or pill. We prescribe, administer and track the medication here in the office. For individuals suffering from psoriasis, the steroid creams only take care of about 25% of the rash. Biologics control the rash at a rate of 75-100% by controlling it from the inside out. And as anyone that has suffered from psoriasis can tell you, in many cases it causes joint pain as well—a condition called psoriatic arthritis or PsA. The biologics control not just the rash, but the joint pain too!” Biologics for psoriasis include Humira, Cosentyx, Taltz, Stelara and Otezla. Think eczema is just for kids? Think again. Celia says, “Some people never grow out of it! While kids might see eczema on the arms and legs, many adults suffer from hand dermatitis. Like psoriasis, eczema can be chronic. The biologic Dupixent controls the chronic symptoms of eczema from the inside out. We administer and track Dupixent for you right here in the office.” If you suffer from psoriasis or eczema, don’t delay...find relief today at Rosenberg Dermatology. Call to schedule a consultation!

CARDIO, STRENGTH TRAINING AND TECHNOLOGY-TRACKED RESULTS by Amy Sharp
V
ickie Malinowski has exercised all her life...walking, jogging, riding her bike. She’s also had various gym memberships over time, but always quit her strength training because she just wasn’t sure what to do at the gym to accomplish her goals. At one point she even joined an instructor-led strength training program. “It was ok,” says Vickie, “but it was very expensive and didn’t offer everything. I wanted to get strength and cardio in together, at the same time. I had read about Koko FitClub in UpClose Magazine. I kept seeing it, it’s only three miles from my house, so I finally stopped by. I loved Koko FitClub the moment I walked in the door!” “It’s a nice, cheery environment,” continues Vickie, “with uplifting energetic music. But the best part? There is no thinking! My cardio and my strength programs are on my Koko Key. I put the key in the machine and do my workout. I don’t have to worry about what to do. It’s on the key! When I first started last June, a coach helped me get familiar with the exercises and machines. I had the option to continue with the coach, but I’m good working out on my own. I was hooked from the beginning. I signed up two weeks into my trial membership!”
As Vickie learned, KoKo FitClub’s patented Smartraining machine uses your own data to design a workout plan just for you. The machine guides you through each exercise and adapts as your fitness level improves. You can track your progress by stepping into the Koko FitCheck machine. Vickie says, “I use FitCheck about once a week. I’ve seen an increase in lean muscle and my strength has improved considerably. I have more muscle definition in my thighs. I feel better, lighter, and I can see the difference in the way my clothes fit. I just can’t say enough about it. It’s a great concept and a great program. I absolutely recommend it!” Are you ready to have it all? Check out Koko FitClub today!

kateTherapy provides the liberating experience of ice skating to skaters with special needs. “I believe SkateTherapy is what I was called to do,” says BL Wylie, a retired figure skating coach and mom to 1992 figure skating Olympic silver medalist Paul Wylie. “It has been a God-given gift.” It all started when BL’s teenage daughter taught a blind man to skate. Then a young girl who could not walk wanted to skate, but there was nothing available. Then a student of BL approached her about a high school graduation service project. “That project became the impetus for the birth of SkateTherapy. Joining forces with STARskaters leadership enabled us to begin with four skaters and seven instructors,” says BL. “That was eight years ago.” Classes meet every Saturday at Sugar Land Ice and Sports Center. The volunteer instructors are all participants in ice skate
training programs. “In addition to skating, we also concentrate on the development of social skills,” says BL. “The students stand in line to check in, then warm up as a group, followed by lining up to get on the ice. These skaters become wonderful friends, and we’ve witnessed amazing transformations both personally and physically.” All students are taught one-on-one, and if an apprentice instructor is present, two to one. All instructors do an apprenticeship first, and all attend once a month training with guest speakers from a variety of professionals working with special needs. A special walker called the “cruiser”—designed by then 15-year-old instructor Jesse Chen—accommodates those that need assistance walking. A set of “cruisers” were constructed and

feel empty when you walk out of church? Like what you just heard doesn’t apply to life right now? What if you could find a church community that is not about religion and tradition...just His Word and how it applies to your life today! Apostle Ned and his wife Lady Jeana Ned have been chosen by God to do just that at Recharge Christian Fellowship Church. “We’ve been here 14 years,” says Apostle Ned. “And God has been very fruitful to us. But big things are happening. Our God-size vision includes not just a church, but a community center...or as I like to call it: a business fun center. A place where kids can play and parents can take care of business, making the community better and stronger. We will help people maximize what they have by providing counseling both in life
and finances. Moving to a temporary location down the road is a purposeful move led by God to help us pick up steam to this destination. Our sound is being heard.” At the new location on Old Richmond Road, Recharge Christian Fellowship Church services will be 9-11am on Sunday mornings. “Our first service at this location will be on Easter,” says Apostle Ned. “Resurrection Sunday. We will be bridging the gap between The Bible and everyday living...how to still function in a chaotic world by making The Word more relevant. Our son broadcasts our services on Facebook. There is a place in the church for high tech. God gave us the ability to create it, and now we must use it for the kingdom.” With four children and eight grandchildren of their own, Apostle Ned and Lady Jeana
Ned strongly believe in the strength of family as a unit. In addition to Sunday service at the new location, Recharge Christian Fellowship Church will host Bible Interaction on Thursdays at 7:30pm. “Bible Interaction is not just me talking,” says Apostle Ned. “This is an opportunity to ask questions and express what you feel and perceive...get clarity on doctrine. You had to be too careful. It was slick and we were afraid of scratching it...but we figured we had to live with it. Then came Harvey and the floor buckled.” “I had been to several flooring stores,” continues Sue. “And I just wasn’t happy. A lady I worked with told me about Lone Star Floors, so we stopped in and checked it out. Our salesperson Matt was just fantastic. He was so helpful and showed us a lot of things. But what I liked the most is he wasn’t pushy. We knew we wanted vinyl or tile that looks like wood. With vinyl, the height of our doors and baseboards would have to be adjusted. And I just wasn’t sold on the tile. Matt offered to bring samples to the house. He placed the tile in front of our fireplace and to my surprise it was perfect. The price was competitive, maybe even a little lower than some of the others. We went with it!” The day before the Lone Star crews were to start work, Sue had an idea: Why not rip out the 20-year-old tile in the bathrooms and

onee and Paul Barnett own local thriving business Miracle Method Surface Refinishing. Day in day out, Jonee and Paul transform dated surfaces in homes all over Fort Bend County. They quite literally make what’s old look new again. But at 57 and 58 years young, Jonee and Paul had neglected to take a very important step in protecting the future of their family. The Barnetts did not have wills. “I’ve known Margie Connolly (a Fort Bend attorney) for years,” says Jonee. “We first met through the Exchange Club of
Sugar Land. In 2011, I was training for a triathlon and Margie was training for the Ironman. I asked Margie to help me train in swimming, and I also attended a spin class she taught. That year I got to know
Margie better, on a personal level.” Fast forward to 2017 and the Barnetts crossed paths with Margie at a networking event. It was fate. “I saw Margie,” says Jonee, “and I said, ‘Ok, let’s get going on this.’ Here’s a little secret about me: I’m busy with our business. If there’s trouble scheduling my personal stuff...I just forget it. Margie was very responsive and very flexible in meeting with us. Paul and I both needed to be there, and she would meet with us late in the day. She took care of our wills, medical and financial powers of attorney, a revocable trust and a living will. Margie made it very simple and it was personal. We even put something in there for our pets, making sure the money is there to take care of them. I honestly can’t believe we’ve never had this. Margie made it easy. I recommend her to anyone needing to take this important step.” Like she did for Paul and Jonee, protecting personal assets and family through personalized estate planning is Margie’s specialty. Margie says, “A personalized estate plan built exactly to your wishes is like holding peace of mind in your two hands. You never have to worry about the ‘whatifs.’ We all know that life can change in an instant. Are you ready?”

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

hen Tim Templin first started his insurance company, he drove 60,000 – 70,000 miles per year. At a time when most cars didn’t have cruise control, that’s a lot of time sitting in one position with your leg flexed and your foot on the pedal. He suspects that his hip and lower back problems began on his road to success. Tim says, “I have been plagued with lower back problems for most of my life, but I have always managed to keep up with the outdoor lifestyle I enjoy. I like to hunt and fish and work on my farm. I am 77 years old and I’ve always said I’m going to do whatever I can for as long as I can.” Recently, when the pain in Tim’s hips and lower back was so unbearable that his physical activity became very limited, he knew it was time for a tune up. “I’m very choosy about where I get advice and help,” says Tim. “So when I read about Dr. Harris, I knew I wanted to see him about helping me return to a more active life. From my first appointment I enjoyed the personable staff and the family atmosphere. It was very refreshing. What impressed me about Dr. Harris is that he really cares about my health and getting me to the point where I can enjoy my life. He’s not one dimensional; he is genuinely concerned about my overall health. Dr. Harris relieved a lot of my pain from the very first visit. He gave me my life back.” Dr. Steve Harris offers a wide variety of chiropractic care and therapies such as spinal decompression, class IV hot laser inflammation treatment and a nutritional weight loss program. He is committed to helping people with chronic pain and improving their overall health. Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982, and recently celebrated his 41st anniversary in his chiropractic practice. Through the course of his treatments, Tim and Dr. Harris would share fishing stories and life experiences.
