hredding Hunger”—hosted by our local Keller Williams Southwest Houston Market Center (KWSW)—is back for its third year. And it just keeps getting bigger!

KWSW agent Kimbra Valachovic says, “This is another effort in our KWSW campaign of ‘Giving Where We Live.’ And it’s truly a win-win! The event is April 21st. We’ve partnered with ProShred and we cover the cost of everything. Bring your papers to shred and nonperishable food for the East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry pantry. Our KWSW volunteers make the process as easy as possible. You just drive through and we unload your shred and food items for you. Or, if you prefer to watch your items being shredded, you are welcome to park and we’ll have refreshments available. Our donation suggestion is ‘a bag for a bag’: a bag of food for every bag of shred. We will also accept donations made out

For many years, KWSW has participated in RED Day, Keller Williams’ annual international day of service. On Red Day, agents and employees around the world spend the day away from their businesses serving the community. In the past, local KWSW Red Day projects have included serving at Fort Bend Women’s Center, Fort Bend Animal Control, Fort Bend Family Promise, Parks Youth Ranch and Texana. This year, Red Day is May 10th. In anticipation, KWSW’s non profit R.E.A.L. Giving is hosting a Casino Night April 26th to benefit the Red Day efforts. Kimbra says, “It’s a fun and affordable night. LYMPHEDEMA INCURABLE, PROGRESSIVE AND MORE COMMON THAN YOU THINK More than

5 MILLION

Americans live with Lymphedema

AN ALARMING FEW ARE DIAGNOSED by Sara Adams

Did you know that Venous Insufficiency can cause Lymphedema? We have known for many centuries that the components of the circulatory system are the heart, arteries and veins. The inclusion of the lymphatic vessels within this system was proposed just a few decades ago.

Ulises Baltazar MD, RVT, FACS now affiliated with the renowned Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates

Edema versus lymphedema Edema, or swelling, can be caused by many different diseases (heart failure, renal failure, venous insufficiency, etc.). Lymphedema is the swelling of any part of the body, most commonly arms or legs, as a result of malfunction of the lymphatic vessels due to many reasons, including genetic disorders, cancer, chemotherapy, trauma, surgeries, chronic infections, parasites and venous insufficiency. Lymphedema is a chronic, degenerative, non-curable disease. Long-standing edema, whether caused by venous insufficiency or another origin, can eventually affect the lymphatic vessels resulting in lymphedema. A prompt consultation with a vascular surgeon after developing swollen legs is important to determine if venous insufficiency is actually present, and to proceed with treatment that will decrease the chance of developing lymphedema.

tax rate possible in Fort Bend County because there’s no M.U.D. or L.I.D. taxes either! Sounds like a dream? Not anymore! The Millis Group—our Fort Bend County development company created by Mark and Laura Millis with a reputation for unique and elegant properties—has made this dream a reality in Royal Lakes Manor II: a private entry gated community with oversized lots, lakes and trees just south of Greatwood on FM2759, the perfect setting for their Bethany Homes ‘Goliath’ garage product. Paul Schmalz, VP of Sales and Marketing, says, “Each Bethany Home includes a ‘Goliath’ four car garage with a porte’ cochere. Above the garage is a massive bonus room with up to 1,600 sq.ft. to build out any way you wish. A man cave, extra bedrooms, an office...its use is limited only to your imagination!” “I have more than 20 years experience in home building,” continues Paul. “And this is the first place I’ve seen that you can truly decorate your home with only the standards and be completely satisfied. Masonry, stucco, stone, granite countertops,

accent tiles, oversized glass front doors, beautiful backsplashes and high quality cabinets with hardware are just a few of the many things we offer as standard. These are not upgrades!” And the lower taxes? They’re made possible by Royal Valley Utilities, a private utility company highly regulated by the TCEQ. “It used to be that if you didn’t live in the city or within a M.U.D., you had your own sewer and septic system,” says Paul. “And they are very expensive to put in and maintain. Here in Royal Lakes Manor II, you get a water bill like you would in the city. Plus, we have no need for a levee or L.I.D. taxes. We were high and dry throughout Harvey!” There’s a road in the works that will allow Royal Lakes Manor II residents to go from the front of the community directly to Crabb River Rd. The Perfect Cars

Alexis and Sara off to college in 2012

A Classic Congratulations! This year, both girls will be graduating in May.

for College and Beyond

W

hen Ray and Diana Aguilar’s twin daughters Alexis and Sara needed a car for college, they turned to the place where Dad works: Classic Chevy Sugar Land. Ray says, “This was way back in 2012. We wanted a car they could drive their senior year at Travis High School, and then take to college. Both are softball players, and they were set to play on scholarship at Kilgore College in northeast Texas.” The family chose the Chevy Equinox for the girls, because it had lots of room and it gets great gas mileage. It was perfect. Alexis and Sara moved themselves to Kilgore College in the Equinox, along with their softball gear, microwave, and all of their boxes. And the 3.5 hour drive only used half a tank of gas! For two years, the girls drove the Equinox around Kilgore. The small SUV had so much room, several of their softball teammates ended up buying the same car. And the girls spoke so highly of their Dad and Classic Chevy Sugar Land, their softball coach came all the way to Sugar Land to buy a pickup truck from Classic Chevy Sugar Land! In 2015, it was time for the girls to move into their respective programs. Sara

was going to Texas A&M to major in Animal Science, and Alexis to Panola College in Carthage to study nursing. Ray says, “It was up to them who kept the Equinox, and they decided Alexis would take it to Panola College. I started keeping my eye out for a car for Sara. A pre-owned Mini Cooper came in to Classic Chevy Sugar Land. As we do with all pre-owned vehicles, our mechanics thoroughly checked it out. It had been serviced well and was a great vehicle. Sara chose the Mini Cooper to drive to A&M.” Today, both girls are graduating in May. “We are so proud of them!” says Ray. And each will take their respective vehicle with them as they move to the next chapter in their life. “Safety is everything,” says Ray. “These are not new cars. In fact, the Equinox is six years old. But they have a lot of life left, and I feel very confident sending my girls out into the world in them!” It’s graduation season! If you have a graduate heading off to college soon, Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land can help ensure your precious cargo (your child!) is safe. General Manager Jeff Sebastian says, “We have a large selection of both new and pre-owned vehicles. I’m certain you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for at the right price. Stop in today!”

Today’s Vision Sugar Land Welcomes Two of the Best

D

r. Tom Arnold, our Today’s Vision Sugar Land optometrist of more than 25 years, is excited to welcome two additional doctors to his practice: Dr. Joseph A. Janes and Dr. Kristyn Reed. Once an EE major and destined to work study at NASA, Dr. Janes had a huge hang up: the slide rule. “It drove me crazy,” he says. “It’s a lot of guesswork. A close family friend in both optometry and pharmacy told me optometry is more fun.” And the rest is history. Dr. Janes’ optometry career spans more than 30 years. He has extensive contact lens experience, including FDA studies on both lenses and solutions. He has taught special topics at the University of Houston, College of Optometry, where he served as an adjunct professor and has acted as check out doctor for numerous eye professionals. In fact, he was Dr. Arnold’s contact lens check out doctor! He continues to consult for surgical procedures, and he is well-acquainted with eye-related

medical issues. Dr. Janes says, “Here at Today’s Vision Sugar Land, I tend to see the older patients. First, I understand them because I’m ancient! But I can also diagnose and treat medical issues, helping route patients through the system when surgeons or specialties are required. It’s wonderful that here at this office I can use all of my talents. Like me, Dr. Arnold is positive and aggressive. I like the limitless horizon component of this practice, and it’s why I believe we make a good team!” Dr. Reed wanted to be a pediatrician until she followed one on “Take Your Kid to Work Day.” “I quickly learned unhappy babies were not my thing! I enjoy math and science, and in high school I had the option to either do a mentorship or another science fair project. So I followed my own optometrist. He taught me how to work up patients and got me jump started in optometry. I really loved what he did!” Today, Dr. Reed’s specialty is scleral contact lenses and contacts for hard to fit eyeballs. She

also fits “ortho-k” lenses to control myopia progression in children as young as seven. “My passion is helping those that can’t see, see. And I can relate...I’ve worn glasses and contacts since I was little.” Dr. Reed met Dr. Arnold at a scleral contact lens symposium. When Dr. Arnold heard she might be in the market for a new job, he called her right away. Dr. Reed says, “I immediately fell in love with this office and this staff. They are very professional, and the patients never have anything bad to say. It all runs so smoothly!” Dr. Reed is also active in Benevolent Missions International, providing optometry services around the world. GettingYour Medications Just Got Easier

by Amy Sharp our baby is in pain. The cold and allergy season has led to a nasty ear infection. You got in to see the doctor, but now the pharmacy says it could be two hours before they can get the prescription filled...the prescription that is the magic potion to relieving your baby’s pain. “TWO HOURS!?!” But the clerk just gives you a there’s-nothing-I-can-do-about-it shrug. Dr. Lance Campbell Pharm.D., R.Ph. at Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy in Sugar Land founded his practice on the philosophy that “True customer service is not a thing of the past.” He says, “Don’t trust your family’s health to the chains that treat you like a number! Our mission at Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy hasn’t changed…we are still your family-friendly local pharmacy….that now accepts and bills insurance! We now stock all commercially available medications, and we continue to compound medications to meet your specific, individual needs. We accept major prescription and insurance plans. Don’t ever be treated like a number again!” Campbell’s offers all the medications you can get from the “chainstores”…and so much more! Need a compounded topical pain cream? Many insurance plans cover it! Insurance may also cover the Tamiflu suspension, compounded nausea medications and other solutions that are just not available at a non-compounding pharmacy. “As a parent myself, I know how important convenience is when your kids are sick,” says Dr. Campbell. “I’m so excited we can now take care of you and your family across the board. From blood pressure medica-

Y

tion to prenatal vitamins to antibiotics to specialized compounded medications, I want to work closely with you and fill your family’s needs. I love helping people feel their best…not just with medicines, but with quick, individualized and friendly service. When you come into my store, you are not just a customer or a number, but a member of my family. And that is how you are treated! My staff and I are here to make your life easier…and accepting insurance and prescriptions plans for commercial or compounded medications is just the icing on the cake!” Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy “If our staff can’t make it… then you probably don’t need it!” Sugar Land • 281-980-2555 4760 Sweetwater Blvd. Suite 103 Houston • 713-668-4833 6603 Kirby Dr., Houston, TX 77005 www.campbellscompounding.com

BETTER FORM = BETTER RESULTS

oe Landy is an active swimmer and a biker. However, as he’s gotten older, he’s struggled to lose weight. “Someone told me I needed resistance training,” says Joe. “I had never done it. I found Koko FitClub while riding my bike to check out the ice cream shop next door for my girlfriend’s daughter. I stopped in, and Mark Malhiot (coowner of Koko FitClub with his wife Veronica) gave me a session and a tour. He was very friendly and explained everything. I liked the concept so much, I signed up that day!” Eighteen months later, and Joe has stuck with Koko FitClub’s unique concept that combines technology with individualized coaching. Joe says, “I really like that I have the option to have a trainer. Sometimes when you do an exercise, you might just be doing it wrong. But with the combination of the trainer and the computer, I know I have the right form when doing the Koko X workouts with Mark.” Koko X is a free motion machine designed to work functional movement. It’s based on time intervals rather than repetitions, and your real-time heart rate is displayed so your coach can adjust your workout to keep you burning calories at just the right intensity. Joe continues, “I’m a talker,

but there isn’t a lot of time for that since I’m put on a clock. With the computer I have to get it done. I can knock out my whole body in 30 minutes. We usually end with the battle ropes, one of the toughest workouts there is. It really challenges me, working all body parts. I’ve noticed an increase in endurance—especially in my swimming—and my body fat has gone down.” Whether you are new to fitness, or are just starting over, the Koko tech-driven systems are designed to individualize the experience just for you. Each time efficient Koko workout lasts 15-45 minutes, just 2-3 times a week. “I would encourage anyone to do a trial of this program,” says Joe. “Once you try, you’ll see better form and better results. It really helps you grow. And once you see results...you will want to keep doing it!”

After Four Babies, She’s Shopping in her Own Closet!

et’s face it, most of us have some degree of battle scarring to show after nine months of carrying around another human being. Novatá Griffin has been there...four times! “I workout and I’m healthy,” says Novatá. “But my stomach was stubborn after having four children. My ab muscles were separated, and it wasn’t getting any better no matter how much I worked out.” It’s a common problem, and one Dr. Eric Humble at Houston Dermatology and Plastic Surgery/ Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery sees often. “After having children, many women do not have the abdominal tightness they had before,” says Dr. Humble. “No matter how much exercise you do, you may not get the same tone as your pre-baby body. The problem is usually two-fold: First, during pregnancy abdominal muscles are stretched and separated to accommodate the growing baby. For many women, the muscles never completely return to their original position, and remain at least somewhat separated. And second, compounding the problem is the lax, loose skin that often occurs when a belly has been stretched to the limit for nine months. But there is good news: We can take you back to your pre-baby body.” Novatá did her homework when selecting a plastic surgeon. “I sought the advice of several doctors. At Dr. Humble’s office, I knew immediately I was in the hands of a real professional. He

has excellent bedside manner, and he is very competent. His staff is friendly, and I just had a good feeling about him. I knew he was the doctor for me. The day of my procedure, I encountered several quality checks with different staff members to ensure I was knowledgeable of the procedure and knew what to expect. It gave me a real sense of security!” The team at Houston Dermatology and Plastic Surgery/Sugar Land Face & Body is renowned for fantastic “Mommy Makeovers.” Not sure where to start? It’s as simple as scheduling a free consultation where Dr. Humble and his team can custom-design a plan of action using both surgical and non-surgical procedures (or both!). Dr. Humble says, “We can address that loose skin on your tummy, your tummy ‘pooch,’ eliminate stretch marks and/or restore the fullness and beauty of your breasts.” Two and half months later, Novatá is still thrilled with her results. “I was pleased with my results immediately!” she says. “And the recovery process was actually better than I anticipated...I could walk the first day. I now feel like I have a new lease on life. I will be released to workout at the gym again soon, and I’m super excited about summer. Plus, I’m able to go shopping in my own closet...my husband is very pleased about that! I absolutely recommend Dr. Humble to others!”

Twenty Years of House Cleaning...and so much more! by Amy Sharp

melda Mahoney started cleaning houses when her now adult children were little. Craig Foresman and his wife Gretchen were clients way back then. “That was more than 20 years ago!” says Craig. And a lot has changed in 20 years. In 2007, Imelda formed her company: Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services. Today, she employs multiple teams of ladies and her daughter

Casandra helps run the company. Craig says, “They remain reliable, the quality of work is good, and they are great if I need to reschedule or want something special done. They are accommodating and attentive, and they never say no. Over the years, they’ve become friends of our family.” In addition to regular cleanings, the Mahoney’s ladies have organized and pet sat for Craig and Gretchen. Casandra has babysat their son Garrett since he was a newborn (now he’s 18!). The Foresmans have attended Mahoney family weddings. Of Gretchen’s passing a few years ago, Casandra says, “She was loved by us so much, and helped us out in so many ways.” Fully bonded and insured, with Mahoney’s House Cleaning all of the “extras”—blinds, baseboards, ceiling fans, etc.—are standard. They can work on a schedule that’s conve-

nient for you, and as the Foresmans found, are also available to do almost any type of house service you can think of. “We will never turn down a cleaning project! Our list of services is always growing, all our clients have to do is ask,” says Casandra. “We always go above and beyond to exceed your expectations...we treat you like family!” “It’s just me now,” says Craig. “And I’m busy. I still need a clean house, and I know I can depend on these ladies. I absolutely recommend them. In fact, some of my closest friends use them for house cleaning, dog sitting, etc.!”

And She Loves It! by Amy Sharp

ebbie and Larry Bostick moved into their home in 1997. Debbie says, “In 2013, we did an update to our master bathroom. We put in granite and updated the tile. Ever since, we’ve had nothing but problems with the shower leaking and the baseboards were starting to rot. We also had a garden tub that no one was using. I’m not a soaker, and that tub was a dust collector. I wanted it out in 2013, but hesitated and took the easy way out. I was tired of it and tired of the leaking. I had seen Teri Gilberg’s work in UpClose magazine. (Teri is better known as ‘The Re-Modelista.’) I loved the work I saw, and finally thought, ‘That’s it, I’m calling her.’” Teri paid a visit to the Bostick’s home, where Debbie and Teri talked through what Debbie wanted. “There were two windows above the tub looking over the backyard,” says Debbie. “These worried me. I wanted to gain more shower space, but if that wasn’t possible, maybe the space could be a storage area or a bench. Teri came out a second time to ease my mind. She assured me we could work with the windows and create a large, walk-in shower. After that second visit, I said, ‘Yep, let’s do it!’” Debbie wanted to extend the wood look of her kitchen and bedroom to the master bathroom. Teri recommended she go to Floor and Decor to look at tile. Debbie says, “We picked a really pretty tile that looks like refurbished wood. We took the same tile up inside of the shower. With privacy glass in the windows, the window ledges will serve as soap and bottle holders. When I wasn’t sure if I wanted grey or a faint blue on the walls, Teri brought samples and helped me choose. For the cabinets we chose a dark cafe color, the same color as my accent cabinets in the kitchen.

My brother has a cabinet design store, so we ordered through him and had them delivered to the house. I now have more than 20 drawers. Storage galore!” Each day during construction, Debbie says Teri’s crews arrived on time. “They became part of my family. I work from home, and each day I opened the gate so they could go in the door through our master bedroom and work in the bathroom. They cleaned up everything each day before leaving. The tile work is a masterpiece, very neat. I was very pleased with the crews. They were just amazing.” The Bostick’s master bathroom came in under budget and took less time than originally estimated. And the finished product? Debbie says, “I just love it. We are waiting for the window privacy glass to arrive to actually use the new beautiful shower. I don’t want to give my neighbors a peep show! But I cannot wait to use it!”

HELLO, SPRING! ARE YOU READY FOR SUMMER?

by Amy Sharp ere in Texas, our summer weather starts in April. And you know what that means? Shorts, tank tops and even swimsuits! Are you ready? Let Rosenberg Dermatology, our local satellite location of the esteemed Houston-based Heights Dermatology & Aesthetic Center, help you prep for the unveiling! Worried about unwanted hair or spider veins? Think lasers! Certified Physician Assistant Celia Vaclavik says, “Our state of the art lasers can be used for laser hair removal on any part of the body, including face, arms and legs. While those with light skin and dark hair are the best candidates, we now have lasers for every skin type. For spider veins, we can laser the smaller ones and use sclerotherapy (injections) on the others. We treat spider veins on the legs, and we can also use the laser to treat small capillaries on the face and neck.” With the hair and veins taken care of, it’s time to get a tan...right? “Wrong!” says Celia. “Tanning beds are a huge no-no. I know back in the day they claimed tanning beds only had UVA rays—not UVB—and UVA did not cause cancer. The fact is, UVA can cause cancer. Not only that, tanning beds have more UVA than the natural sun. So if the possibility of cancer doesn’t scare you, the fact that you are causing skin aging should. There’s a reason Hollywood stars have turned to spray on tans!” And don’t try to get dark in the natural sun either. “I recommend wearing sunscreen with physical blockers like zinc or titanium dioxide,” says Celia. “Physical blockers always have broad spectrum UV protection. Plus, they last longer and stay on better than most chemical blockers. We sell the EltaMD products here at the office, and they are fantastic. I recommend SPF 30 or higher, and you should reapply every one to two hours if in direct sunlight. Wear your physical blocking sunscreen on your face, neck, chest and arms—any area with constant exposure—every single day. The UVA rays can even penetrate through the tinted glass of your car!” Now let’s break out the shorts and tank tops. Happy Summer!

FISHINGBob’s Story

r. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. has been Bob Sealy’s dentist for more than 20 years. Where’d they meet? Fishing, of course! Bob owns Sealy Outdoors, known since 1984 for producing the largest amateur fishing tournaments in fishing history. He also appeared as an announcer on ESPN’s Redfish Cup for several years. Bob was inducted into the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame in 2017. And he thinks the world of his dentist! “Dr. Lomonte is very experienced and knowledgeable,” says Bob. “He really knows what he’s doing. Many years ago, he did implants in place of my lower teeth. He told me then that it was only a matter of time before I did the uppers. He showed me my x-rays...I had a little bit of everything going on. He said since I’m on TV all the time, I needed a great smile and needed to look good!” That prediction came to pass. A couple years ago, Dr. Lomonte replaced Bob’s upper teeth with implants. Bob says, “I was in his chair for a few hours. Comfort was never a problem...I always felt comfortable. He extracted my teeth and delivered my temporaries the same day. (Teeth in a day!) After a few months, my implants were ready for permanent teeth. Dr. Lomonte and his staff took special care to make sure they looked natural. My smile is important and I’m glad he was able to make my teeth look and feel totally natural. The day of my appointment, Dr. Lomonte told me he had just bought a new boat. I asked him if he was trying to pay for that boat by giving me new teeth. He said, ‘No, it’s already paid for. But I need fuel!’ I think I Come in filled that boat up at least twice. But as they say...you get what you pay for. I got what I paid for, plus some!” as a patient In practice at his same Stafford location since 1982, Dr. and leave Lomonte believes in nothing more than the power of a smile. “My as a friend! staff and I are dedicated to making you smile and smile often!” says

Dr. Lomonte. “If you don’t walk out of our office with one of those ear to ear sort of smiles, then we haven’t done our job.” “Today, I have a perfect set of teeth,” smiles Bob. “In short, I’d recommend this guy to anyone!” For Sealy Outdoors tournament information:

Not Just Flooring...An Entire First Floor!

A

fter the flood waters of Hurricane Harvey, Aaron and Erin Weaver needed to rebuild their entire first floor. Erin says, “On the recommendation of a neighbor, we stopped into Lone Star Floors to look at flooring. We spoke with Sam and Terry, and learned not only do they offer flooring, but they do everything! We invited them to do an estimate on our first floor rebuild—including flooring, baseboards, the drywall up to four feet, cabinets, granite, backsplash, the bathroom counters, bathtub and shower, the fixtures, our wood steps and railing, the fireplace and painting. We got other estimates as well. However, not only did Lone Star Floors have the best price, we felt they were nice, honest and upfront with no upselling. So we made the decision to have them do the job.” “I’m indecisive,” continues Erin, “and they helped so much with design. I’ve never built or remodeled, so this was my first time. Sam, Terry, Frank, Imad and Ziad were wonderful in helping figure out my likes and my taste. I couldn’t have done it without them!” During construction, the Weaver family lived upstairs. “Lone Star Floors was very considerate of both our work schedule and our kids and big dog. They always came when they said they would, and cleaned up before leaving every day. There was practically no noise. At one point I told them they could play music...it was so quiet I didn’t know they were downstairs! They were very respectable, considerate,

They waited to do the stairs until we were out of town, so we did not have to spend money on a hotel.” Like many Harvey victims, the Weavers still have not received 100% of their insurance money. Erin says, “Lone Star Floors has been very understanding and patient with spacing payment until the money comes in. They told us they didn’t want to leave us strapped for cash. We couldn’t have asked for a better company!” And the finished first floor? “We love it! It’s a new look and totally different. It looks so much better than before!”

hen thousands of Hurricane Harvey survivors emerged from shelter after the storm, they realized that everything they’d worked so hard for—houses, pools, cars—was destroyed. Those were dark days for the Houston/ Fort Bend area. Harder still was finding qualified plumbers to help put houses (and lives) back together again. Most plumbers were scattered across Houston and parts beyond chasing the high-dollar jobs. Not Alan’s Plumbing. Alan’s Plumbing is a family-owned, family-run business. Master plumber Alan Burkhalter, his brother Chris (also a master plumber), Alan’s beautiful wife Jennifer (she’s the “good angel” who answers the phones), their sons Luke and Beau (journeymen licensed plumbers) and their other son Jake (proud apprentice working toward a journeyman license) all toughed it out in Fort Bend, weathering the storm with friends and neighbors. Longtime employee Jeff Johnson, also journeyman licensed, and plumbing apprentices Jaime and Trevor made sure they were available

to answer distress calls from the community they serve. Alan’s Plumbing has been in Fort Bend for forty years, and it’s going to take a lot more than a hurricane to scare them off. “Loyalty may seem like an old-fashioned word these days,” says Alan. “But it’s the most important word at Alan’s Plumbing, next to customer service. When you need a plumber, think about who stayed in Fort Bend County for their customers after Harvey. We’re not ‘713’ plumbers. We’re ‘281’ plumbers. And we were determined to stay and take care of our loyal customers in their darkest hours. Loyalty to us means everything.” Being a plumber is a tough job, even a dangerous one. It’s an up by dawn, home after dark proposition. You crawl into cramped, spider-ridden spaces. You handle toxic chemicals. You come into contact with water and electricity, often at the same time. But Team Burkhalter wouldn’t have it any other way. “Making sure you have access to clean, potable water in your home is our first priority,” says Alan. “That

can mean making sure your water softener is doing its job or digging out tree roots that are strangling your pipes. We repair faulty toilets, stop leaks, and replace rusted-out water heaters. Every job we do has a unique set of challenges, but one thing is constant, and that’s getting the job done right the first time.” “There are no hidden surprises when it comes to pricing. We take the time to explain everything to our customers. A huge percentage of our business is repeat business and word-of-mouth, which is why your trust is sacred to us. We do the best job possible no matter what. Jennifer and I raised our three boys with that work ethic—and now my boys are raising another generation with those same guiding principles.” From their family to your family, Alan’s plumbing is here for you…always!

Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way:

The Sandwich Generation by Amy Sharp

M

elissa Hoffman, a Financial Advisor with Dearborn & Creggs, is a member of what is called “The Sandwich Generation”: a generation of people responsible for bringing up their children and responsible for the care of their aging parents. And of course, they’re also providing for their own future. “As a Financial Advisor, I know and understand the importance of working with an estate planning professional,” says Melissa. “I value the role of an estate attorney...it’s why I picked one for my own family: Margie Connolly. I’ve known Margie professionally for nearly 20 years. We are both active in triathlons, running and biking. She helped draft my personal will a few years ago, and I called on her again when my 85-year-old mother moved in with me last year. ” Melissa found her mother’s power of attorney documents were from 1999, and her will was old. “It was created several states ago and many years ago!” says Melissa. “Margie helped create new documents, including a will, power of attorney and healthcare directives. My mom is with it, but at times things don’t process as fast as they used to. Margie was very patient and thorough, explaining the legalese and helping ensure Mom made informed decisions. Mom felt comfortable from the beginning. Margie asked Mom pointed questions to be sure to find out what she truly wanted. When Mom wanted to leave things to the grandkids and

not just her kids, Margie walked her through it. I have a niece that is not yet old enough to inherit and Margie set up a trust for her.” “By all indications, ‘The Sandwich Generation’ trend will continue,” says Margie. “People are living longer, making it likely that like Melissa’s mother, our parents will need our help as they age. And our adult children are increasingly facing hefty college tuition debt and turning to their parents for economic assistance. Personalized planning and well-crafted legal documents are essential to protecting all three generations.” And the other side of this “sandwich?” Melissa’s daughter is single and working in NYC. Her son just got married and is buying a home. Melissa says, “I’m getting him in to see Margie next!”

REPEATCUSTOMER! B

asil Housewright first saw local Miracle Method Surface Refinishing in UpClose magazine. Today, between his own home and his rental properties, he’s a five-time repeat customer! His first job was a tub/shower in a rental property. Basil says, “I could tell it had been refinished before, but it was a poor job and it was peeling. It was too expensive to replace, but I was apprehensive about refinishing it again. I called Miracle Method Surface Refinishing and Paul Barnett (who co-owns Miracle Method Surface Refinishing with his wife Jonee) came out to take a look. Paul agreed the refinishing was poor, and probably done with a “do it yourself” kit. He assured me that professional refinishing was completely different. That was 10 years ago, and that tub/shower still looks great!” In another rental property, Basil had the countertops refinished. He says, “Again, great work. The color is an earth tone that makes the counter look like granite. I liked it so much that I redid the countertops in my own kitchen in exactly the same color. This was five years ago, and it also still looks great. Most recently, I had Miracle Method Surface Refinishing out to redo my 17-year-old daughter’s bathroom. It was worn and dinged. My daughter freaked out because it’s so beautiful now!” Miracle Method Surface Refinishing is perfect for making countertops, backsplashes, vanities, showers, tubs and tile surrounds look new again. It costs significantly less than replacing, and your investment in Miracle Method Surface Refinishing is protected by a warranty. Owners Paul and Jonee take great pride in accountability and top-notch customer service. They are proud to be accredited members of the BBB, have an A rating on Angie’s List and have won the Angie’s List Super Service Award nine years in a row. “I just love these folks,” says Basil. “First, the work is great and it lasts. I’ve had four different crews across my jobs, and each one produced the same high quality of work. And while it’s nasty work, they clean up meticulously. Many contractors don’t do that! There’s always a good plan, and they do what they said they were going to do. They’re also timely. They get in, get finished and leave the area cleaner

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS, DOCTOR OF CHIROPRACTIC WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

Some Things CAN Improve With Age

T

by Sara Adams

hat’s what Beverly Falcon found out when she went to see Dr. Steve Harris for her neck and shoulder pain this past October. Beverly had been feeling crummy for a few months. Her neck and shoulders hurt, she had knee pain. She says, “I just felt terrible all over, and then all of a sudden I remembered Dr. Harris. The last time I felt this terrible I saw Dr. Harris and I got a lot better.” That was twelve years ago. A lot can happen in twelve years, and Beverly was pleased to find out that even though Dr. Harris was still the kind, thoughtful, professional chiropractor she knew in the past, he had continued to learn and grow as technology and information changed in his field. He has even more to offer now than he did twelve years ago. In addition to Beverly’s pain in her neck and shoulders dropping from a level 10 to a 1, she also experienced some unexpected benefits from her decompression therapy. Beverly has had a problem with ringing in her ears for longer than she can remember. She noticed that after working with Dr. Harris, the ringing is not as intense as it used to be. Beverly had an even bigger surprise after one session when her right knee, which she had been unable to straighten out since knee surgery 10 years ago, just popped and became unlocked. She can now fully extend her right leg. “Before I saw Dr. Harris, I felt like I was getting old. Now I feel like a new person. I can move so much better. I just feel good all over. This time I won’t wait twelve years to go back, I plan on seeing Dr. Harris once a month for maintenance.” Beverly’s improvement was so obvious, even her husband Ken started seeing Dr. Harris. Dr. Steve Harris offers a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with chronic pain or to help improve their overall musculoskeletal function and health. Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982, and recently celebrated his 41st anniversary in his chiropractic practice. t all started a few years ago when Amy Grinstein and her husband Joe had universal remote control envy. Amy says, “Our friends had just streamlined their controllers from 25—maybe it was more like five, but may as well have been 25—to one magical scepter! Amazing! We wanted this too and called Halcyon Technologies on our friend’s recommendation. We ended up with our new magical remote control, a new Sonos system and outdoor speakers. The work was professional and so was the follow up.” Recently, the Grinsteins called on Halcyon again for a larger job—a new tv, wifi troubleshooting, new built in speakers, Apple TVs and more. “Our wifi had a spotty connection,” says Amy. “It was not reliable and everything depends on it, including our driveway gate, our garage door and our doorbell...and of course work and homework.

Halcyon Technologies brought us a new router and dropped boosters and extenders throughout the house to make our signal stronger. They installed our new TV and moved our old TV. I also had them install Apple TV. It’s my first move to get our house ready to ‘cut the cord’ and get rid of DirecTv and its expensive bill. Now that the infrastructure is in place, I just have to convince Joe!” “Our house was built in 1989 and we are the second owners,” continues Amy. “So over the years of having so many different A/V companies and technicians working in our home, our wires were a jumbled mess...I mean a real tangled knot of a mess. Not only did Halcyon Technologies install everything for us, Carl and Nate untangled the mess! They showed me before and after pictures of our wiring...our house now looks like a new build. I believe this is what makes Halcyon a special company: professionalism.

Let Us Make Your smart home a Reality

by Amy Sharp They work as a cohesive and effective team who seem to enjoy their work together, and they have quite a depth of knowledge and experience. They foreshadow issues and troubleshoot like pros, which I think is key when retrofitting into an existing infrastructure. And they follow through, which is critical when dealing with the A/V needs of families who rely on connectivity not just for recreation, but nearly everything! Besides all of that, which is a lot, they are also just lovely people to be around and to work with.
