The orthopedic doctor will see you – now! Houston Methodist Orthopedic Injury Clinic at Sugar Land features experienced, skilled specialists in a walk-in, same-day setting.

I

t was a call no parent wants to get: Nineyear-old Ananya Mudunuru of Sugar Land had injured her arm during recess, and the school nurse knew Ananya needed to see a doctor.

throughout her physical therapy to ensure she was progressing properly. We feel very blessed.”

Ananya’s mother Sheetal immediately picked her up from school and took her to the pediatrician. Ananya’s pain, numbness and lack of mobility in her arm suggested a fracture, and the pediatrician recommended that Ananya see a specialist as soon as possible.

Many people who suffer an orthopedic injury first try to treat it themselves. When that fails, they make an appointment to see their primary care doctor, who then refers them to a specialist. That specialist then schedules diagnostic imaging, X-rays or an MRI, sometimes at a different location. Proper diagnosis can take weeks.

Faster, specialized care

Most local orthopedic clinics were near closing and would not have been able to see her last minute. But not Houston Methodist Orthopedic Injury Clinic at Sugar Land, which offers extended hours and walk-in services to ensure that patients with acute orthopedic injuries can be seen quickly.

The Orthopedic Injury Clinic streamlines this process. Patients walk in and see a specialist that same day. They can even have X-rays taken immediately on-site. If an MRI is needed, it can often be scheduled for the next day. Should a patient need consultation with an orthopedist who has a specialized focus – for example, knee or shoulder surgery – that appointment can be scheduled easily.

“The Orthopedic Injury Clinic is a valuable resource for patients and their primary care physicians,” said Nish Shah, M.D., a boardcertified primary care sports medicine physician, who is one of 13 physicians staffing the clinic. “The sooner a patient sees a specialist and treatment begins, the less risk there is of further damage, the less pain they suffer, and the sooner they are healed.”

Sugar Land to regain her full range of motion. Today, Ananya is healed and her arm strength is returning; her mother is grateful for the quick diagnosis and thorough care provided.

In addition, the Orthopedic Injury Clinic does not charge an emergency room or urgent care fee; the cost is the same as a regular specialist visit.

Shah examined Ananya and an X-ray revealed a hairline fracture near her elbow. He fitted her with a protective sling and recommended that she undergo physical therapy at Houston Methodist Physical & Occupational Therapy at

“Not only was I so relieved that she could be seen by a specialist so quickly,” Sheetal said, “Dr. Shah went out of his way to make Ananya feel comfortable and to explain her injury. He never once rushed us and continued to check on us

“Primary care physicians and pediatricians often aren’t sure where to send their patients who need orthopedic treatment,” said Shah. “Our clinic is perfect since the patient can leave the primary care office and come straight here.”

Back to the game ‒ quickly Ciarra Mutshatshi plays basketball for Wharton High School. In August 2017, she injured her knee jumping for a rebound. Thinking it was just a ligament pull, she wore a brace for a while, but the pain didn’t go away. The school’s athletic trainer suggested she visit the Orthopedic Injury Clinic, where Nader Ayub, D.O., a board-certified primary care sports medicine physician, examined her. “I suspected right away that she had torn her meniscus, and an MRI confirmed that diagnosis,” said Ayub. “Most meniscus tears require four to six weeks of rehabilitation, and considering the time of year it was, it was important that she have surgery as soon as possible to avoid missing any of the upcoming basketball season.” Ayub recommended that Ciarra see his colleague

Nader Ayub, DO

Ashvin K. Dewan, M.D., a fellowship-trained sports medicine physician and board-certified orthopedic surgeon with Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine at Sugar Land. Just days after her initial visit to the Orthopedic Injury Clinic, Dewan successfully repaired Ciarra’s meniscus and started her on the road to recovery. Following physical therapy, she was cleared to resume competition in October, in time for the start of the high school basketball season. With her knee healthy again, Ciarra eventually helped lead her team to the regional finals in March 2018, capping off a successful junior season. “Most high school athletes have just one or two years of varsity play, and missing time due to an injury is physically and emotionally challenging,” said Dewan. “The Orthopedic

Orthopedic, sports medicine and cardiology specialists will be on-site to provide additional clearance, as needed. For more information, call 281.275.0447 or visit events.houstonmethodist.org/physicals-sl to print and fill out necessary forms. Injury Clinic allows us to diagnose injuries right away and get the patient to the proper specialist for further treatment, if needed, within a day or two. That rapid response can make all the difference, because the longer an athlete waits for treatment, the more difficult their rehabilitation will be due to muscle weakness. For some young athletes, that could be the difference between getting a scholarship to play at the college level or missing out.”

In January, Lyllyan met Dr. Ulises Baltazar at a vein seminar sponsored by Methodist Hospital. She says, “Dr. Baltazar was the keynote speaker. He was warm and personable and friendly. The information he presented was clear and easy to understand. It was obvious he is very knowledgeable and loves what he’s doing. I noticed the audience was made up of a variety of people, both young and old. It was so refreshing to watch how Dr. Baltazar responded to each guest. He didn’t talk down to anyone; he answered everyone’s questions and never made anybody feel uncomfortable or stupid. Dr. Baltazar explained the causes, symptoms and treatment options for venous insufficiency. Three years ago, Lerleen and her husband Larry were the successful bidders on an estate planning package Margie donated to the Rotary Fall Classic fundraiser. “Our will was really old and needed to be updated,” says Lerleen. “We have been married almost 48 years. Our three kids are now adults, and we have two grandkids. We needed to change our will. Margie was extremely helpful and knowledgeable through that process. artha and Jerry Gardner live in an established neighborhood. “Our house was built in the late 80s,” says Martha. “We really wanted to update all three bathrooms, but we were not geared up for replacing everything. We actually got several bids, but the thought of jack hammers and the dust and mess-not to mention the expense--was a lot. I had read about Miracle Method Surface Refinishing in UpClose magazine. I checked their online reviews and ratings. I was blown away...so I gave them a call.” Miracle Method Surface Refinishing is locally owned by Paul and Jonee Barnett. Paul came out to do the Gardners’ estimate. The work in their bathrooms included refinishing all countertops and tile surrounds. The floor in the small bath would be refinished, and in the master bathroom the cultured marble lip in front of the garden tub and shower would also be refinished. The project included replacing the shower door and installing grab bars and a shower shelf in the master bath as well. “We initially thought we also wanted to refinish all three tubs,” says Martha. “But Paul told me two of the tubs were in good shape. He suggested we just clean them up...there was no reason to refinish them. I was grateful for his honesty. It was a nice thing to hear! So we only refinished the garden tub in the master, and added non-slip surfaces to the other tubs.” “Before the work started, Jonee called with a plan to make sure we always had one bathroom available for the duration of the project,” continues Martha. “The plan was executed without a hitch. The crew was very clean and conscientious. Each day they cleaned up before leaving, and let us know what we could use and what we needed to stay away from. Paul came in and installed the shower door personally. He’s a master craftsman...so precise. The door is beautiful and first perfectly.” “We are very pleased with the outcome. The bathrooms are just gorgeous...they look brand new! And I wanted to share the most beautiful story that came to light. ost of us agree: Talking about sports is a lot more interesting and exciting than talking about energy efficiency. But what if I told you that sports and energy efficiency are working hand-inhand to create a better future for us all? Case in point: NRG Stadium, home of the Houston Texans. It’s one of the only stadiums in the NFL to only use LED lights to illuminate the field, which consume 60% less energy. And the stadium will be receiving over 700 solar panels for the upcoming season! I’d say that’s one in the win column for everybody. Brian Jackson of Jackson Air and Heat, Sugar Land’s oldest Trane air-conditioning dealer and proud sponsor of the Houston Texans, knows a few things about energy efficiency. Water

aving hot and cold water piped into your home is a pretty impressive modern convenience. Especially when you consider that a little over a hundred years ago, we were still hauling buckets of water in from the well and freezing to death in outhouses. It’s hard to remember that life was not always so easy, and that progress is the most incremental of forward motions. So let’s take a moment to appreciate modern sanitation! As terrifying as it is to think about, we didn’t even make the connection between water and diseases like cholera and typhoid until 1854. It’s safe to say that modern plumbing--this everyday miracle--is the reason we’re alive and kicking! As part of a multi-generational plumbing family, master plumber Alan Burkhalter of Alan’s Plumbing in Sugar Land grew up learning everything there is to know about water and pipes, including their history. “Most people think of indoor plumbing as a recent phenomenon. But in 2500 BC, the Egyptians were installing copper-pipe bathrooms in tombs. Every major civilization has created its own form of sanitation. But not until recently have we managed to treat wastewater and drinking water as the two distinctly separate issues they need to be.” Growing up in the business and having raised his sons in the same customer-first tradition, Alan considers his work to be

nothing less than a calling. “Customers are usually surprised to find out how many Burkhalters work here at Alan’s Plumbing,” he says. “My brother Chris is a master plumber. My sons Beau and Luke are journeymen licensed plumbers. And my son Jake is a plumbing apprentice, as are apprentices Jaime and Trevor (who are just like family to me!). Jeff Johnson’s been with us for years now, and he’s journeyman licensed. My wife Jennifer is the person you talk to when you call. She may be slinging a phone instead of a socket wrench, but don’t let that fool you. Jennifer knows almost as much about plumbing as me and the boys.” “Making sure you have safe potable drinking water in your home, and that your pipes are in good working order are just two of the services we have a long history of providing. Whether it’s installing a water softener, a water heater or a toilet, we do exactly what we say we’re going to do, when we say we’re going to do it. We love our work, and we love serving the community we live in. When you need a plumber, just remember: We’re here for you.”

What I found was...I just don’t push myself as I need to. Bette and I were attracted to SuperSlow Zone because it’s an intimate setting with one-on-one strength sessions and state of the art equipment. We each did a consultation with co-owner Sheryl Roche...and we were hooked!” After more than a year of twice a week personalized sessions with a SuperSlow Zone instructor, Raleigh and Bette are both still very pleased. “We can tell a remarkable difference in muscle tone and strength. We each schedule appointments when it’s convenient. I’m usually in my work clothes. The sessions are 20 minutes...and there’s no need for a shower after. We complement our strength sessions with walks in our Bette Bailes neighborhood.” SuperSlow Zone’s unique approach is beneficial for rehabilitation, medical strength building, weight loss, and general exercise. “Clients like Raleigh and Bette come to us because traditional exercise approaches just don’t work for them!” says co-owner Sheryl Roche. “When people struggle with exercise, they need to know it’s not their fault. The traditional messages on exercise are dated and unsustainable for so many of us. Our protocol is exciting because we are changing people’s lives.” General Manager and avid tennis player Maeve King adds, “My role as an instructor is to motivate, enable and make this an energizing and rewarding experience. ylvia Saba had not used the shower in her master bathroom in five years. “The previous owner had remodeled,” says Sylvia, “and it was not done properly. There was water leaking outside of the shower glass, ruining the sheetrock. Tiles were coming up from the floor. I was not sure of the extent of the damage, and I didn’t want to just patch it. I also knew I needed to repipe. This house was built in the 70s and had all galvanized pipe. I wanted a complete re-gut in the bathroom, and I wanted it done right!” “I was wary about hiring just anyone,” continues Sylvia. “It was important that the contractor I hired had their own people that had worked with them for a long time. I was very pleased with the workmanship and attention to detail, so I called Teri for a bid.” “Teri envisioned what I wanted before I could even say it. She is an expert at what she does. She knew exactly what she was doing from the moment she walked in, and she anticipated every need. I did get bids from others, but I was most confident and comfortable with Teri. In regards to design, I had an idea in mind inspired from hotel baths. Teri helped me pull my idea together.” During construction, Sylvia made it clear she didn’t want the job rushed. “I wanted it done at a pace where it was done right. Teri’s timeline was right on. Every single person she brought into our house, including her crews, the electrician, the shower glass installer and the plumber that did the repipe, was very professional and very detailed in their work. I work from home and they did not bother me at all. When I left the house for appointments, I totally

trusted them. Even my husband, who was very concerned about going through a renovation, commented on how wonderful they all were. The did their own thing and got the work done. They made life easier for us.” After using the completed bathroom for a few days, Sylvia created what Teri calls a “punch list”: a list of small things that need attention or fixing. “I called Teri with the list, and she had someone out here the next day. I think this is important to consider when choosing a contractor. You want someone that is also reliable after the job is done!” Sylvia is thrilled with her new master bathroom. “It’s so beautiful, I want to move my office in there,” she laughs. “I’ve already recommended Teri to a couple of friends, including my best friend who is buying a home in my neighborhood. If her new house needs work, she needs to call Teri!”

hen Keller Williams Southwest real estate agent Ola Olabiyi wanted to install tile in her home, she turned to a client for a recommendation. She says, “My client had used Lone Star Floors to install her carpet and was treated really well...so I stopped by their store. At Lone Star Floors, Terry helped me. He showed me some really good, beautiful, and durable tile. From the many options Terry had available, I was able to find what I was looking for.” During installation of her new tile, Ola continued to be impressed with Lone Star Floors. “They showed up when they said they would, and their time estimate was right on. They did a really neat and professional job installing the tile. I recommend them to everyone that needs flooring work, including my real estate clients!” The fact that Ola chose to use Lone Star Floors in her own home speaks volumes for the family-owned and operated company. Keller Williams Southwest is one of the largest realty offices in Fort Bend County. “The proof is in the numbers,” says Ola. “In April 2018, the ‘listings taken’ volume of our office was $50.7 million. This number reflects the trust that clients place in our office, and represents the reputation built by that trust. If you are looking to buy or sell your home, or want to invest in real estate, contact us at KWSW where you will receive great service, confidence, competence, trust, and most importantly...outstanding results!” Lone Star Floors is owned by cousins Mohamed Naser, Ziad Mukhaimer, and Imad Mansour. SHE’S NO LONGER PREDIABETIC!

by Amy Sharp bout a year and a half ago, Amy LaCroix noticed her neighbor was looking fit. “I asked what she was doing. I learned she’s a member at Koko FitClub, and she encouraged me to try it! I had been running and walking, and I also had weights at home...but I didn’t use them regularly. When I visited, the employee that showed me around Koko FitClub was enthusiastic and knew the equipment well. He really made it sound very easy to do!” Koko FitClub, locally owned by Mark and Veronica Malhiot, is a technology-driven system designed to individualize the exercise experience. It’s digital equipment that uses your own data to design a workout plan just for you. With weight, pace, and rest time precisely calculated, the patented Smartraining machines guide you through each workout—adapting as your fitness needs change—to constantly challenge the body. Workouts can be done on your own, or you have the option to have a Koko coach by your side. “For the first two months, I chose to have a coach guide me through my workouts twice a week,” say Amy. “And once a week, I worked out on my own. I like that I can sign in online and see my numbers, including how much weight I’ve lifted and the distance I’ve covered in cardo. I can also see my next workout, which I found very helpful when I first started. After two months, I started going three times a week on my own. The thing is, with all of my workouts on my memory stick, it’s like I still have a personal trainer! I plug it into the machine, and it guides me through. It’s easy, and I’ve maintained going three times a week for 18 months. I do 15 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of strength and I’m done for the day!” As for results, Amy had no idea what was in store for her. “For the past few years, I’ve been prediabetic...literally one number away from having diabetes. Last August—nine months after joining Koko—my numbers were good! I’m not prediabetic anymore, and nowhere close to having diabetes. I wasn’t expecting that! Koko FitClub is a great place. Everyone is friendly and knows the program. I can’t say enough good things about them!”

Judith and Sanan Jackson’s Story

udith and Sanan Jackson met KW (Keller Williams) Southwest agent Sanja Poje at an open house last year. “We were impressed with Sanja from the start,” says Sanan. “She was very consistent about emailing and texting us listings. She even texted to wish us ‘Happy New Year.’ So when we did see a house we liked, we gave Sanja a call.”

“We connected right away,” says Sanja. “Judith and Sanan are such a friendly couple. It took us a while, but we found their perfect home on Easter. We put an offer in the same day, but unfortunately they decided to take another offer. Judith and Sanan were so sad. I made sure the listing agent knew we would do anything to get that home. A week later, she called and asked if we still wanted it. We were thrilled. The transaction was very rocky from start to finish…all because I was just trying to get the best deal!” “Sanja is so knowledgeable,” says Judith and Sanan. “She really knows what she’s doing. She was on top of every step, from negotiating the price to making sure the inspection went perfectly. Two hours before our closing, we couldn’t get the A/C to work. It was a stressful moment, but Sanja really stood up for us and made sure we tested the A/C before we went through with the closing.” The night before their final walkthrough, Judith and Sanan told

by Amy Sharp

Sanja they were getting married the next day as well. “Since we became so close and they trusted me so much since the beginning, I knew I had to do something special for them!” Sanja made a plan with Sanan to surprise Judith. After the wedding, Sanan and Judith would come by the house to show it to their guests. “When they arrived, I had everything ready,” says Sanja. “The groom picked up his bride and carried her in, walking a red carpet I had purchased just for the occasion. When they stepped in, there were white flowers waiting for them. I also had a few balloons because it was the bride’s birthday. The look on their faces was priceless. I was so happy watching them walk around the house with such excitement and pride, showing their new home to their friends.” “What Sanja did on our wedding day was so sweet,” says Judith. “Another example of how she really goes above and beyond. We love our new home. It really fits our character and our lifestyle... it’s perfect! We 100% recommend Sanja. She’s not just our agent, she’s our friend!” Are you ready to buy the home that fits you perfectly? Give KWSW a call today! KW Southwest ~ 281-265-0000 1650 Highway 6, Ste 350 • Sugar Land, TX 77478

PAIN RELIEF without the addiction L

ife moves pretty fast, so you can’t afford to be slowed down by pain or held back by the effects of pain medication. “As a parent and a business-owner, I know how much time we spend on the road,” says local pharmacist Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm.D, R.Ph, of Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. “And as a pharmacist, I know my patients need safe and effective treatments for pain. Here at Campbell’s, we can compound creams to treat your pain...without the risk of drowsiness or addiction.” Whether mom’s driving to work or dad’s shuttling kids to football practice, driving and pain medications are a dangerous combination. Dr. Campbell says, “Pain makes it hard to focus, destroys your mood, and impacts your entire life. But many people are afraid of taking medication. Compounding a cream for your pain means we can deliver relief to the specific area where you need it most...without nausea, mental impairment, or social stigma.” “Working with your primary care doctor, orthopedist, or other specialist, we can tailor your medicine to your specific pain...whether it’s nerve pain, inflammation, throbbing, or chronic pain. We’ll compound your medication with muscle relaxants, pain relief, or antiinflammatories in the perfect combination. These pain-relief creams are almost one hundred percent covered by insurance. We also offer auto-refills and free shipping, so you won’t have to worry about running out of your medicine...or running out to get it.” “I became a compounding pharmacist because I want to find solutions that really help people,” adds Dr. Campbell. “These compounded pain relieving creams are among the most patientspecific forms of treatment we do. There’s Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy no need to live in pain. Schedule a consult “If our staff can’t make it… with us today!”

They know what grows here and where to plant it...I’ve never lost one of their plants. When I sold that home, my real estate agent said the beautiful landscaping added so much value. And it did, the price I got was incredible!” Now living on almost 10 acres, LaDonna was desperate for landscaping. “I had a graduation party coming up,” says LaDonna. “I needed it done quickly, and I gave Steve free reign. hen Allison Little’s dentist sold out to a corporate conglomeration, she decided to look for a new dentist. “I just like an ‘at-home’ dentist,” she says. Lucky for her, she didn’t have to look far. Allison lives next door to Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. Not only is Dr. Lomonte a private practice family dentist, he’s been practicing in his same Stafford location on Murphy Road since 1982! “I chose Dr. Lomonte because first, he really is pretty cool!” says Allison. “And I knew he was experienced in taking care of cosmetic issues. Eight years ago, my dog knocked out my front teeth. I had a root canal, but the work I had done started to go south. I speak in front of people for a living, so there was no way I could have bad teeth. I think I’d rather give up my first born! One of my teeth needed to be extracted, and I told Dr. Lomonte I was not walking around missing a tooth. The day of the extraction, he had a bridge waiting for me. Not only did I leave with everything looking pretty, it was very affordable! I’m very happy with my results!” “We are big on smiles around here!” says Dr. Lomonte. “Not only should you have a smile you’re proud to share with the world, we believe in dental service that keeps you smiling too. We have created an environment that fosters great relationships, and we are proud of that. If you do not walk out of our office with one of those ear to ear sort of smiles like Allison, then we haven’t done our job. HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS, DOCTOR OF CHIROPRACTIC WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

“Dr. Harris gave me my life back!”

J

by Amy Sharp

oni Glen has rheumatoid arthritis. “I was on three medications, and experiencing a lot of side effects because the rheumatoid arthritis drugs are immunosuppressants,” says Joni. “I’ve had back to back sinus infections, vision problems, shingles in my eye, and I underwent a tonsillectomy. I also had a lot of aches and pains. I couldn’t turn my head while driving. I had insomnia and occasional brain fogs. To get me through, I was using pain relievers, muscle relaxers and getting injections in my back. But worst of all, I had no life. I couldn’t go outside with my grandchildren. I couldn’t sit on the floor and play a game with them. My husband couldn’t understand why I couldn’t hold a paintbrush or open a jar of peanut butter.” Joni attended “Dinner with a Doc” with Dr. Steve Harris at Sugar Land Health Center as a favor to her good friend Sandra Osborne. “Sandra is a patient and wanted to see if Dr. Harris could help me. I have a background in healthcare, and when Dr. Harris explained the processes and what he does to make you feel better, it just made sense. One thing he talked about that really stood out to me was old injuries. I, as well as my doctors, always attributed all of my aches and pains to the rheumatoid arthritis. Maybe that wasn’t the case...I had to hear more. I scheduled a consultation with Dr. Harris on the spot!” Today, Joni has moved from a treatment program to a maintenance program with Dr. Harris. She has reduced her rheumatoid arthritis medications from three to one. She can now drive with ease and spends a lot of time playing with her grandkids. And Joni hasn’t seen her rheumatologist or her neurologist for pain since she started seeing Dr. Harris. In fact, her other health professionals have told her she’s feeling better than she should! “At my consultation, Dr. Harris made it clear that rheumatoid arthritis is not curable,” says Joni, “but that he could help me get a better quality of life. And guess what, he held to his word. He educated me on how my body works, and through a combination of his equipment, his nutritional and exercise recommendations and his expertise, he gave me my life back!. I just got home from taking my grandkids to the circus where I climbed the stairs to our seats. Before I started seeing Dr. Harris, that was not even possible. I highly recommend Sugar Land Health Center. Everyone in Dr. Harris’ office genuinely cares about you and helping you improve your quality of life!”
