he high quality, cost-effective health care we’ve come to expect from Houston Methodist is right here— close to home—at Houston Methodist Primary Care Group - Katy. Meet the team of doctors dedicated to taking care of you and your family! Randa Djendou, MD Dr. Djendou grew up in Algeria. Always fascinated by genetics, she went to medical school thinking she would go into research. She says, “During my 3rd year doing rotations, that changed. I enjoyed contact with patients, and realized I was more oriented to doing direct patient care. I became a surgeon in Algeria.”
A trip to Houston to see her brother changed Dr. Djendou’s life. “We visited Houston Methodist in the Medical Center,” says Dr. Djendou. “I remember being surprised it was a hospital and not a five-star hotel! I told my brother it would be a dream come true to work at a place like Houston Methodist.” Here in the United States, Dr. Djendou is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. “Taking the required exams was pretty challenging,” says Dr. Djendou. “It had been more than 15 years since I had done the basics, and all of my schooling and testing in Algeria was in French. When I got here, I could only say ‘Hi!’ and ‘Bye!’ in English. My goal was to

study six months and take Step 1. The people at Kaplan gave me a crazy look... but I did it. In English!” A three year residency, a marriage and two children later, Dr. Djendou and her husband Bechir settled in Katy. She is the doctor that opened the doors at Houston Methodist Primary Care Group - Katy one year ago. “Now with a family, my dreams of working in the Medical Center are not realistic,” says Dr. Djendou. “Katy is where we want to raise Malak and Yacine. This practice is my new dream come true. Compassion, bedside manner and how you treat a patient are part of the Houston Methodist ICARE values. These are important to me, and I have not been
Close to Home Center Of All We Do disappointed. I still think Houston Methodist is the best place in the world for a physician!” Joshua Defriece, MD When Dr. Defriece broke his arm playing 8th grade football, he became fascinated with his orthopedic surgeon. “I asked a lot of questions,” says Dr. Defriece. “As a result I got to shadow that doctor from 8th grade until I went to medical school.” A Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine graduate, Dr. Defriece moved to Texas for his wife Kellie to attend law school. “We loved Houston and we stayed,” says Dr. Defriece. “I grew up in a town of 600, so I liked that Fulshear is out in the country. But Kellie is a city girl and it’s close enough to the city for her. We love that we get to raise our daughter Dylan here!” Two years ago, Dr. Defriece took a job with Houston Methodist. “It’s the best,” says Dr. Defriece. “There’s a lot of opportunity, and who wouldn’t want to work for the best? Back when I started, Houston Methodist was just beginning to focus on telemedicine, which I was doing in my previous position. I was given the opportunity to lead the pilot for telemedicine at Houston Methodist, which is very exciting. And the position here in Katy has allowed me to teach medical students in a partnership with Texas A&M Medical School. Teaching is something I have always wanted to do.” Jennifer M. Garrison, DO Dr. Garrison wanted to be a doctor for as long as she can remember. “I always found science and medicine interesting, and I had a really good pediatrician growing up. I idolized her. It was never in my mind to do anything different than be a doctor.” After a residency at the United States Army Medical Center, Dr. Garrison and her husband Charlie moved to Katy. “Charlie is from Louisiana,” she says. “I actually grew up in New York, but
I never wanted to be cold again! And this a great place for our daughters, Laura and Claire.” After two years at the VA outpatient clinic on Westgreen, Dr. Garrison moved to Houston Methodist Primary Care Group - Katy. “This is the best job I’ve ever had,” says Dr. Garrison. “I ‘grew up’ on the government side of things, working for the VA and the Department of Defense. This is very different. I love working in family medicine because I never get bored. It’s something different every day...though there tends to be a theme for each day! And the group of people that work here at this practice are phenomenal. Every person is a hard worker, and the teamwork is incredible. It’s what I cherish most about being at Houston Methodist Primary Care Group - Katy.” Tina T. Luu, MD Even as a child, Dr. Luu enjoyed helping people. “I loved helping my mom with my sister, including when she was sick. It’s just something that’s always been ingrained in me.” This Houston area native went to medical school at Ross University School of Medicine in Roseau, Dominica. “I was actually in nursing school,” says Dr. Luu, “and I had a friend going to medical school in the Caribbean. On a whim I applied and got in. So I figured, ‘Why not?’.” After a residency in Ohio, Dr. Luu returned home and opened a private practice right here in Katy. This past December, Dr. Luu and her husband Mark Aparece welcomed their first son, Caleb. She says, “I actually had my baby at Houston Methodist, and let me tell you...Methodist is the way to go! They treat their patients well. Being self-employed is not easy with a baby, so I took a job here at Houston Methodist Primary Care Group - Katy. I love the work ethic here and everyone is super friendly. Houston Methodist standards in patient care are in line with what I stand for, and here at this practice we see patients of all ages. I just love the continuity of care!”

oday’s Vision Cinco Ranch is one of the fastestgrowing and most technologically-advanced family optometry offices in Katy. Under the direction of Dr. Ali Mostaghimi, this office cares for people of all ages...from infants to the elderly. Dr. Mostaghimi says, “Thank you Katy. Because of your support and loyalty, we have expanded our office and we are excited to welcome Dr. Shelby Gross to our practice. Dr. Gross shares my commitment to answering all of your questions, addressing your concerns, and using the best, most advanced optometry technology available to give you exceptional eye care. She’s been a great addition to our team!” Dr. Gross became interested in optometry while working on her Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience at Tulane University. She says, “I found the sensory system especially interesting, and the eye was just fascinating. That was my turning point, when I decided optometry was the career for me.” This native Houstonian returned home to receive her Doctor of Optometry at the University of Houston College of Optometry. She did her rotations at a VA hospital in Albuquerque and her residency at a VA hospital in Portland, OR. “The VA hospitals were great learning experiences,” says Dr. Gross. “I was able to see a variety of patients and cases, and I could specialize in geriatrics...including ocular disease and low vision.” Dr. Gross was in private practice at a Today’s Vision in Austin when she

saw Today’s Vision Cinco Ranch had an opening that would bring her back to Houston. She jumped on it. “I love that here at Today’s Vision Cinco Ranch I get to do everything, including many specialty contact lenses,” continues Dr. Gross. “I fit contacts for myopia control and scleral contact lenses. I also see many of the medical optometry patients here at Today’s Vision Cinco Ranch, including those with eye infections and glaucoma.” Contacts for myopia control involve fitting a specialized gentle mold designed to reshape the eye surface. The lens is only worn during sleep. It’s like a “retainer” for the eye...refocusing and realigning the visual image to slow or stop prescription increases, and can be used on children as young as seven. Scleral contact lenses are large-diameter gas permeable lenses specially designed to vault over the entire corneal surface and rest on the “white” of the eye (the sclera). Many people who previously could not wear contacts are now successful contact lens wearers thanks to scleral lenses and Today’s Vision Cinco Ranch! Thrilled to be back in Houston, in her free time Dr. Gross enjoys biking in Hermann Park, trying new restaurants around the city, comedy shows, music, and traveling. Dr.
John Boren has a real passion for helping people achieve pain relief and restore spinal function naturally. He says, “I believe everyone deserves to be healthy and live free from pain.” Before being inspired to study chiropractic, Dr. Boren’s first love was building and engineering. It was during dinner with his father, urologist Dr. James Stuart Boren M.D. and Dr. Shelby Elliott, former President of the American Chiropractic Association, that the mechanics of healing was first sparked. Before he became credited as the Father of Non-surgical Spinal Decompression, Dr. John Boren was passionate about finding a natural alternative to surgical decompression procedures. In the mid 80’s he invented and patented the Lordex® Decompression System. The Lordex® technology offered patients an effective and affordable alternative solution for pain relief and strength restoration. Many of the negatives found in long term drug use or surgery can be avoided by introducing a wellness plan of muscle specific exercise and unloading the spine. “Lordex® advances the ability to restore posture and achieve optimal spine function,” says Dr. Boren. His clinic, Energee Spine Care, is recognized as a leader in non-surgical restorative treatment of underlying bio-mechanical issues. They treat osteoarthritis, herniated and bulging discs, chronic neck and back pain, migraines, peripheral neuropathy and so much more. Dr. Boren says, “We do things differently here. Our patients are our guests. We’re not healing a disease; we are treating a human being. Being healthy is a decision, it is not a prescription. Our goal is to help patients create a mechanical environment in which the desired results are inevitable.” In the past 30 years Dr. Boren has helped thousands of his guests transform their lives and eliminate pain without drugs or surgical intervention.
Someone once said, “We do not get old and quit moving, we quit moving and get old.” As we age our muscles supporting the spine get weaker. We need healthy, strong back muscles to keep us upright as we move through life. Energee Spine Care offers technology to restore strength and decompress the specific disc causing the pain. Dr. Boren says he believes in an integrative approach that allows our innate intelligence to heal our body naturally. “I believe,” says Dr. Boren, “that a doctor’s job is to coach patients to become Wellness Warriors. Doctors need to be motivators and inspire their patients. I envision body mechanics, nutrition coaching, hormone supplementation, exercise and stem cell therapy to be the future to good health. My duty to my patients is to ‘align their spines and enlighten their minds.’” Someone once said, “We do not get old and quit moving, we quit moving and get old.” Call Energee Spine Care today and find out how Dr. John Boren and his team can help you keep moving and achieve Warrior quality of life.

Shilpa Chandiwal Dentist
Amazing?
by Amy Sharp hen Seema Patel’s daughter Jiya (now 11) was little, she would take her to Chicago to see the dentist. “My cousin is a dentist up there. Back then, we were able to visit often. But once Jiya started school, that just wasn’t possible.” Seema was acquainted with Shilpa Chandiwal, DDS. “But I did not know she was a pediatric dentist!” says Seema. “I actually saw an advertisement for Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry and realized I knew Dr. Shilpa. This was about seven years ago. She’s been Jiya’s dentist ever since, and five-year-old Ava’s only dentist. Dr. Shilpa is amazing and her staff is incredible. They are all so friendly, and I just love the office. It’s very colorful, and there are these steps where the kids can play and also use the iPads. I don’t know what it is about steps, but my kids just love it! The telling part is my kids freak out when they have to go to the doctor. But they love to go see Dr. Shilpa... they are not scared!” Jiya and Ava see Dr. Shilpa for dental examinations and cleanings, and both kids DENTIST LOCATIONS CARE have had dental work done. Seema says, “Ava had GI issues when she was little. She was on a special formula that was basically palm oil and sugar. It was awful for her teeth. Despite my diligent brushing, she had a cavity at 18 months. Dr. Shilpa took care of the cavity and sealed all of her molars. Ava was totally fine through this procedure! She was happy to watch Frozen and get a big bag of treats, and Dr. Shilpa let me stay with her until she was comfortable. I’ve heard not all dentists do that, but I think it’s important. Especially for kids as young as Ava!” Jiya had over retained teeth: a condition where the baby teeth do not fall out on their own at the appropriate time, and permanent teeth start growing in behind or in front of the baby teeth. Seema says, “Dr. Shilpa was very cautious with Jiya’s teeth, waiting months to see if the Dr. Shilpa Chandiwal, DDS baby teeth would fall out. Ultimately, she had to take out a few of them (but not all at once!). 5300 Ranch Point Drive, Suite #B She was so careful waiting for the right time. PAIN S by Amy Sharp
ometimes it takes major pain to get our attention. It may have started small, but now we know we need to do something about it. Here’s where a truly exceptional interventional pain management specialist like Dr. Ankur D. Mehta, DO at TX Spine & Joint really shines. Dr. Mehta says, “Pain is our body’s check engine light. Don’t ignore it. If disease states are caught early they can be cured and maintained to prevent further degeneration!” Dr. Mehta completed a training course at Harvard Medical School in Acupuncture and Eastern Medicine. There he added to the already holistic whole person approach that he learned in Osteopathic Medical School in Kansas City and Residency at Loyola Med Center in Chicago. “When my mother tore her meniscus—a piece of cartilage in the knee—two surgeons recommended a knee scope. But my mom was afraid of the anesthesia and did not want surgery. I used regenerative medicine to heal her naturally without going under the knife. This was four years ago, and she is doing well.”

DENTAL Health: Pro Tips for Parents
Not Just an Expert in Teeth, but an Expert on Kids
“O
by Olivia Cane
ne of the best things about kids is their joy and the way they live in the moment,” says Dr. Faisal M. Khan at Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental. “It’s one of the reasons I became a pediatric dentist. I get to spend each day living vicariously through their little eyes!” And from the bashful to the bold, the timid to the outgoing, the rule follower to the trailblazer, Dr. Khan understands that his patients come in many shapes and sizes. He says, “This is why the professional education of pediatric dentists includes two to three years of specialized study after becoming a dentist. During this time, child psychology, growth and development, and special health care needs for children are emphasized. Here at Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental, we see many different personalities and needs in the kids we serve. No two patients are the same, and that makes each day fun and different.” A native of Detroit, Dr. Khan graduated Alma College where he received multiple scholarships. He earned his master’s degree at New York Medical College and then attended New York University College of Dentistry where he graduated with his Doctoral of Dental Surgery degree. His General Practice Residency was performed at Albert Einstein Medical School where he pursued a fellowship in Special Care Dentistry, allowing him to obtain a specialization in working with children who have complicated disabilities. And if that weren’t enough schooling for one person, Dr. Khan also did his pediatric dental residency there, where he was honored with the title of Chief Resident for the program in 2008. “What really made me an expert in pediatrics wasn’t my degrees,” says Dr. Khan. “It was having three kids of my own. I understand why kids get nervous at a dental office. That’s why my facility is chock full of games, movies, kid-friendly surfboards and under-the-sea themes. We do everything we can to make your family look forward to visiting us. Making your child smile is the best part of our day!”

Patrick Choyce never had pets growing up. “My dad was a naval aviator,” says Dr. Choyce. “We lived all over the US. Anytime we lived near a dog or a cat, I was entranced by it. I’ve always loved the outdoors and animals, and I thought the “All Creatures” series by James Herriot was cool. In high school I worked at a vet’s office. The job was never boring! That’s when I knew I wanted to be a vet.” A 1983 graduate of Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Choyce opened All Pets Animal Hospital & 24-Hour Emergency Care right here in Katy 28 years ago. In 2011, the practice moved to its present award winning state of the art facility. It would be easy to mistake this place for a medical facility of the human variety. The treatment room includes a fully equipped lab for all blood work and a fully equipped surgical suite. Digital x-ray, ultrasound, ECG and telemedicine are all onsite. Dr. Choyce says, “We can perform ultrasound in real time with a radiologist looking on, and digital x-rays are sent to a radiologist immediately. We virtually bring the specialist into the practice to help us get a quick diagnosis.” This hospital is staffed 24 hours a day with a doctor and technicians onsite. This means when you bring your pet in, they are taken care of right away. The level of care meets the high standards of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). All Pets places great emphasis on compassion and empathy. “We are Fear Free certified,” says Dr. Choyce. “This means we care for your pet’s emotional well-being as well as his physical wellbeing. Pheromones are infused throughout our rooms to calm your pet. We have separate exam rooms (and boarding areas!) for dogs and cats. We offer a variety of treats and friendly visits to get pets accustomed to the office. We do what we need to do to make your pet comfortable.” Bring your furry family member in for a check up, and you might be lucky enough to meet Caytlin…who is a learning-challenged young adult. When she was in high school, Dr. Choyce invited her to spend some time at the clinic. He says, “Caytlin’s personality just raises the atmosphere of the room. When she first started, I worked with one of her teachers to create projects for her that add value. Today, she works part time. She’s sweet as can be and does a great job.” With 65 employees, All Pets range of services include emergencies, health and medical services, wellness plans, boarding, grooming, rehabilitation, fitness, and house calls. “I find great enjoyment and gratitude in all that I do,” says Dr. Choyce. “I can’t wait to meet you and your pet!” All Pets Animal Hospital & 24-Hour Emergency Care (281) 392-PETS (7387) 24221 Kingsland Boulevard, Katy, TX 77494 www.apah24.com

ongtime Fort Bend County resident John Kennedy has bought multiple cars from Classic Chevy Sugar Land. He says, “I haven’t bought a Chevy from anyone else. But I can tell that here at Classic Chevy Sugar Land, they really mean it when they say, ‘Relax and Enjoy the Difference!’” Most recently, John bought a brand new 2012 Chevy Tahoe. “That experience was the same as each time before: very easy. There’s no pressure and no upselling. Classic Chevy Sugar Land makes it a great buying experience. I also use their service department. It’s the same level of service and care that is found throughout the dealership. Everyone I’ve encountered at Classic Chevy Sugar Land is very professional and efficient. It’s an enjoyable experience!” Of course, it’s really no surprise to hear such high accolades from a Classic Chevy Sugar Land repeat customer. For every year they’ve been in existence, this dealership has been awarded the General Motors Chevrolet “Dealer of the Year” award. It’s an honor only given to the top one percent of Chevrolet dealers in the nation for excellence in customer service, and it’s the highest honor GM bestows. General Sales Manager Brandon Sine says. “We’ve always been a dealership that takes pride in transparency, efficiency, and customer satisfaction...and that’s never going to change. We have the same high standards
in every aspect of our business––new, pre-owned, on-site or internet sales, service, body shop, and financing. We pledge to keep our focus on you.” John is the current Chairman of the Central Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce. He also serves on the board for Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels. Through his work in our community, John has formed a friendship with Classic Chevy Sugar Land Business Development and Community Relations Manager Ray Aguilar. John says, “To be honest, it’s tough to go to an event and not find Ray...and I mean that in a good way! Ray and Classic Chevy Sugar Land are extremely visible in our community and very supportive. They are always out and about, and I think that’s important!” The next big community event to be hosted at Classic Chevy Sugar Land will be the Annual Chili Cook-off coming to you this fall on October 13, 2018. Classic Chevy Sugar Land owner Jeff Sebastian says, “We would love to have you all out here at the dealership on October 13th for a day of family fun benefitting our entire community of law enforcement and fire protection. But don’t wait until then! Whether you’re in the market for a new car or new-to-you car—or just want to drop in and see what we’re all about— you are always welcome. You Really Do Get More!
M
by Amy Sharp
arilyn McPhail recently purchased a home. Before moving in, she wanted to carpet the three bedrooms and do some bathroom renovations, including turning a small shower into a linen closet and taking out a big tub and making it a shower. “I was heading to a carpet store on Mason Road...and discovered it had closed!” says Marilyn. “Lone Star Floors was right across the street, so I stopped in. There I met Mohamed Naser, one of the owners. He is awesome, just very different from other contractors I had worked with. Mohamed’s very upfront and honest, and I felt good about working with him. I was also surprised to learn that Lone Star Floors could do the bathroom remodel as well as the carpet in the house I was buying.” “I explained to Mohamed that I was on a tight timeline,” continues Marilyn. “I had to be out of my leased home by the end of June, and I wanted the work done before I moved in. Mohamed assured me he could make that happen, and he did. As soon as I closed on the house and got the key, the work started. I had no issues during the time the Lone Star Floors crews were at the house. Mohamed did everything I asked, and always made sure I knew that if there was anything I needed, he would get it for me. He even gave me his number and told me not to call the store if I needed something...to just call him directly. I thought that was amazing, he’s one of the owners! Everything’s just wonderful in my new home. Lone Star Floors did a really great job. I can’t say enough good things

I’ve never had a need for a degree Until….

by Amy Sharp
fter Heidi Duty graduated from high school, she did three years of college at a state school. “Then I got married and had babies.” Fast forward nearly 20 years, and it’s time for those babies to go to college. Heidi says, “For years I worked as an estimator for my husband’s company, Duty Construction. Now I own my own business, Duty and Daughters, where we do estimating services, brokering of construction materials, project management and project consultation. I’ve never had a need for a degree. But as my daughters got older, I started hearing things like, ‘Dad’s an engineer, what are you?’ I did not want them to think it was ok to just go to college for a little while. I wanted them to know it’s much easier at 20 and 21 than at 40...and that it’s easier on Mom and Dad’s dime. So I decided to teach by example. I would finish my degree.” Heidi chose Belhaven University because it fit her needs. “I could continue my work, and do one class at a time. A class is once a week for five weeks and I earned nine credit hours each semester. I chose to major in Interdisciplinary Studies, concentrating in Psychology, Communications and Biblical Studies. This choice made best use of my previous college hours.” And Heidi’s plan not only worked, she has experienced unexpected benefits. “My daughters see me writing papers and studying for exams. I’ve had to skip track meets because I needed to study. They see the sacrifice I’m making. I never really thought I would be graduating, but here I am...with both a degree and two other blessings. First, I always thought Christian schools were the same as state schools...just more expensive. Belhaven has changed my perspective of what I want for my children. In my English classes, we compare literature to the Bible, not the secular world. I want that for my children and I will pay for a Christian school. Second, for an independent studies course I organized a girl’s retreat for my church—Creekside Christian Fellowship in Needville. Now the church has approached me about organizing a women’s Bible study and ministry. It’s my opportunity to give back, and it’s a door that would not have opened if it wasn’t for Belhaven!” The programs at Belhaven deliver accelerated adult education and both bachelor’s and master’s degrees that are tailored to the needs of busy working adults.“The college graduation rate is around 50%,” says Heidi. “So I know there are a lot of people out there that didn’t finish like me. If you’re 30, 40, 50, whatever...you can do this. This program is built specifically for us. I graduated on May 5th 2017! I’m a huge fan of Belhaven!”

P
rogress is a good thing! Case in point: remember when calling long distance used to be prohibitively expensive? Now, it’s not only free...you can video chat! Sometimes modern conveniences are simply phased out and then replaced with better technology. A good example is the typewriter. It used to be one mistake and you had to use White-Out or retype the entire letter. These days, all you have to
do is backspace. Gerald Svetlik of True Fix A/C & Heating, our Katy area Trane Comfort Specialist, is having to make a few adjustments of his own when it comes to progress. Air-conditioning refrigerant R22 is being phased out of the market. This is actually a good thing, since the Environmental Protection Agency realized that R22 depletes our ozone. Beginning in 2010 the production and the import of this refrigerant has been set to phase out. By the year 2020, R22 will no longer be available to purchase. So where does that leave you? “No worries,” says Gerald. “While it’s true that R22 is no longer manufactured in North America, that doesn’t mean we don’t have some great, environmentally friendly alternatives. You can still purchase recycled R22 for your air conditioning unit, but even the recycled stuff is getting more expensive as supply keeps dwindling. The good news? If your air conditioning unit was manufactured after January 2010, this phase-out won’t affect you. Your unit is already using environmentally friendly refrigerant. If it was manufactured before, you still have a couple of options.” “Your first option is to invest in a new system that complies with all environmental standards and also should be more efficient. At True Fix we carry Trane, Lifestory Research 2018 America’s Most Trusted HVAC System. Trane Variable-Speed technology does a great job of combating Houston’s high humidity. These systems don’t just cycle on and off like regular air conditioners. Instead, they automatically vary their operating speed, which allows you to keep the thermostat at a higher setting while still cooling every part of your house. Better still, Trane saves you a ton of money on your energy bill.” “Your second option is to have us replace specific parts of your current air conditioner to make it compatible with the approved refrigerant. Of course, the problem is still R22 costs continue to rise.” Call True Fix today and they’ll be happy to come out to your house and provide you with a free estimate for replacing your equipment. As a 2017 BBB Winner of Distinction, True Fix has been delivering quality service for 45 years and counting. “The important thing is not to stress,” says Gerald. “Together, we can find a solution. By planning in advance of the 2020 deadline, you can upgrade your system with excellent financing, or possibly a home equity loan and maybe even take advantage of rebates from Centerpoint Energy too.”
