he Classic Chili Challenge hosted by Classic Chevy Sugar Land is now in its 8th year. Once again, this event will benefit the entire community of Fort Bend County first responders. And with the addition of a Dessert Bake Off, this year is sure to be the best ever! Classic Chevy Sugar Land Operations Director Jerry Parks says, “We are very excited about the addition of a Bake Off. Call today for a booth and a chance to

win serious bragging rights. Just like with the chili, we will be awarding a trophy to both our Crowd Favorite and our Judge’s Choice, chosen by honorary judges: the Johnson Development Marketing Team. For schools and churches, we are waiving the Bake Off $100 entry fee. We just ask that you bring extra cakes, cookies and pies we can sell to benefit our Fort Bend County first responders.” Of course, if you make a mean bowl of

the official “State Food” of Texas, then the Chili Challenge is your challenge. Classic Chevy Sugar Land owner Jeff Sebastian says, “We’ve moved the Chili Challenge to the fall, hoping for some ‘chilly’ weather!” Chili categories include Texas Chili, Spicy Chili, Bean Chili and Specialty Chili. Teams need to submit a $100 entry fee per category or tent space (fees for first responder teams are always waived!). Don’t forget to decorate your booth for a chance

For $2/ticket or $5/family, you can come out and eat all the chili you want, topping it off with homemade desserts sampled from our Bake Off. Jerry says, “You are all welcome to join our first responders in these unique and challenging activities.

We’ll also have carnival food, live music, and fun games—including a game truck— for the kids. There will be fire trucks, police cruisers, ambulances and SWAT units on site. This is can’t miss fun!”

Think About the Benefits by Sara Adams

K

aren Ribet-Nyofu ran the Paris Marathon in 2015. It wasn’t her first marathon; she says she became interested in hiking and biking while living in San Diego and ran her first marathon there in 2006. Karen grew up in Houston where the heat and humidity wasn’t always an invitation to participate in outdoor activities. She really appreciated the active outdoor lifestyle she adopted in California. When she moved to Sugar Land in 2013, she was determined to maintain her level of outdoor activity and leaned more toward biking than running. In 2014, Karen rode in her first MS150, a two-day bike ride from Houston to Austin that raises money to support research and fund services for multiple sclerosis patients. By the time Karen began preparing for the 2018 MS150 she had started to notice a heaviness in her legs and her spider veins seemed more pronounced. Still committed to the ride, Karen sought the advice of her primary care physician who referred her to Dr. Ulises Baltazar. Dr. Baltazar is a highly regarded vein specialist. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting from issues of the circulatory system. Karen felt comfortable with Dr. Baltazar from her first appointment. She says, “He explained everything very well and gave me time to think about the procedure. He did not pressure me, but he did insist that I start wearing compression hose right away.” Following Dr. Baltazar’s advice, Karen was able to maintain her level of activity and train for the MS150. She completed the ride and, as planned, scheduled her procedure after the event. She says, “Dr. Baltazar was nurturing and encouraging. He always explained everything; from the first and follow-up visits and throughout the entire procedure. If I had realized how easy it would be, I would have done this five years ago. I had little discomfort and an easy recovery.” Karen says she would recommend Dr. Baltazar to anyone and encourages others not to wait to seek help. Her advice, “Don’t be afraid to take that first step. Think about the benefits.” Dr. Baltazar is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery. He is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. If you or someone you know have issues with varicose or spider veins, swelling in your extremities or lymphedema, call Dr. Baltazar today.

HEALTH, S RESS & HORMONES H

ormone imbalance is a gradual process. Symptoms can include unexplained weight gain, loss of energy, diminished sex drive, erectile dysfunction, memory loss, muscle mass diminishment and/or depression. Primary care physician Dr. Julia Ward, says, “It can happen so slowly, many people just think it’s their ‘new normal’...that it’s to be expected as you age. But it doesn’t have to be that way!” At Balanced Body Image, Dr. Ward takes a look at your total health. “Often times,” says Dr. Ward, “bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is a piece of this puzzle. Unlike conventional hormone replacement therapy that utilizes synthetic or animal-based hormones, BHRT hormones are identical on a molecular level to hormones that occur naturally in our bodies. And initially, BHRT hormone therapy will make you feel fantastic. However, experience has shown that after three or four months you may not get the same boost that you did initially. That’s why I also address diet and lifestyle factors, making sure your body is getting the nutrients and supplements it needs. And I almost always recommend detox. This isn’t starvation or a juice cleanse. It’s akin to changing the air filter in your house. Whether you’re trying to lose weight, boost your energy levels, or just become a more healthy version of yourself, it’s easier to do when the body is running at maximum efficiency. A detox helps with metabolism and it helps with brain function. Your body will better respond to nutrients, supplements and hormones. As you can see, regular detox really is great for everyone!” It’s time to literally stop dragging your feet. Take an active role in your health instead of letting your health control your life. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Ward today...you’ll have your life back in no time! tion that funds crime prevention programs, purchases much needed law enforcement equipment, and engages in volunteer activities that assist the Sugar Land Police Department’s efforts. Last year’s Back the Blue event resulted in a $75,000 contribution to SLCPAAA. Co-chairs, KK and Scott West, and Amy West and Gary Becker, have set this year’s goal in excess of $100,000. Funds raised will provide life-saving equipment (like medical bags in patrol cars that could save lives of private citizens as well as police officers), tactical vests and other equipment that greatly increases the chances of officer survival when faced with an attack. Additionally, funds will be used to purchase new crime fighting technology and training equipment that will support the Sugar Land Police Department’s continued efforts to keep Sugar Land safe. Sugar Land Police Chief Eric Robins says, “We are so grateful to our community for all the support it has given us through the years. We could not be as successful without our citizens and community partners.” Gary Becker, President of Smart Financial Centre, promises, “Back the Blue will be unlike any charity event you’ve experienced. Prior to dinner in the lobby, guests will interact with members of the Sugar Land Police Department, test their skills in simulated interactions with the bad guys, see hitech CSI investigative techniques, and learn more about public safety. After dinner, the event will move into the audience chamber for a live concert where multi-platinum rock band Loverboy will perform an intimate show for sponsors and their guests. The artist has been underwritten by one of our caring and generous community leaders. The Smart Financial Centre stage has state of the art audio and lighting. The acoustics are phenomenal. This is one event you won’t want to miss.” Captain Chris Thompson reminds us that all a police officer really wants to know is that the community they serve appreciates what they do. He says, “Our officers feel that appreciation every day in Sugar Land. They come to work happy and ready to serve.” Be a part of this year’s Back the Blue fundraiser on October 11th where you can show your appreciation and support for those who protect and serve our community.

The Lawyer Who Cares

W

THIS MONTH’S TOPIC:

Document Your Estate Plan

...Then Go Fishing by Amy Sharp

hen Jill Byler-Harrison—owner/manager of Hackberry Fishing Camp and Marina—was ready to do an estate plan, she called on Fort Bend attorney Margie Connolly. Jill says, “I did my first estate plan a year ago, and Margie took care of everything for me: my will, my power of attorney documentation, and she set up my living trust. I walked in her door not knowing where to start, and Margie walked me through the entire process, making sure I got everything done. She even brought up things I had not thought of. One of the things Margie taught me was that just because you have a living trust, it’s nothing until you put something in it...assets are not automatically included. Margie took care of all the paperwork needed by my financial advisor and brokerage accounts to be included in my living trust. Everything I want to pass on to my family is accounted for, and Margie did the legwork to make that happen.” This summer, Jill went back to Margie and made some changes to her estate plan. “There were things I learned from my Dad’s estate that I did not want my heirs to go through

or deal with,” says Jill. “I expressed my concerns to Margie, and she gave me advice on what to do. She also helped me to understand why Dad made some of his decisions. It’s another thing I love about Margie. While she is extremely professional and polite, she is also laid back and easy to talk to. I left her office feeling comfortable that my family will be taken care of.” Margie says, “I work with a lot of small business owners like Jill. Many have a will and a trust for their children—and even legal documents like powers of attorney and a health care directive—but an estate plan provides clarity about each heir to your estate. And I love that Jill took the time to update her estate plan when she felt it needed to be updated. So many miss this step, but it’s very important. You never want your estate plan to not reflect your wishes!” Hackberry Fishing Camp and Marina is a 22 stall marina in Hackberry, Louisiana. Located right off the Calcasieu ship channel, this facility provides superior lodging and has an on-site newly renovated live bait shop. Visit www. hackberryfishing.com for more information.

immy Kirkpatrick grew up with a split between his two front teeth. “I thought it looked awful,” says Jimmy. “So I never smiled.” After he became an adult, a dentist covered the split with veneers. “But they were too long. I didn’t like how they looked, so I still never smiled.” “My middle two upper veneers chipped off while eating a piece of petrified bacon at a mini class reunion in Austin,” continues Jimmy. “I had not seen a dentist in a long time, so I walked around snaggle tooth for a couple of months. My daughter Amanda and her husband Jesse recommended I see Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. After visiting Dr. Lomonte’s office, my teeth look better than they ever have.” At 71 years old, Jimmy’s teeth were pretty well worn out. “I now have 13 crowns. Dr. Lomonte is the most painless dentist I’ve ever been to in my life. He’s really great. We have the same outdoor activity interests, and he has a great personality. He and his staff, including Lynn and Laurie, made my visits enjoyable. My expectations were exceeded. For the first time in my life, I feel comfortable smiling with my teeth showing!” During one of Jimmy’s visits, he mentioned to Dr. Lomonte that his grandson Hank was born with hemophilia. Dr. Lomonte asked how he could help. Hemophilia is a blood disorder for life. It impairs the body’s ability to make blood clots, the process needed to stop bleeding both internally and externally. Hank is injected with a synthetic blood clotting factor every other day. The Unite For Bleeding Disorders Walk is September 22nd at 8:00am at the Houston Zoo. Dr. Lomonte says, “Hank’s Heroes is committed to raising money to support those affected in our community, and raising awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure for hemophilia. Please consider joining their team for this event and donating to this cause.” Visit www.uniteforbleedingdisorders.org/team/hanksheroes2018 to join Hank Wolgamott’s team. wo-time Guinness World Records® holder Mike Matson will set sail for a fundraiser benefitting Cullinan Park 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19. Matson is the keynote speaker for the 2nd annual Cullinan Park Conservancy “Picnic for the Park” event that will be held in the auditorium of River Pointe Church, 5000 Ransom Road. Memorial Hermann Sugar Land is the presenting sponsor. The famed outdoorsman made history for skippering a three-man rowboat more than 3,200 miles across the Atlantic Ocean. He and fellow sailors David Alviar and Brian Krauskopf were the first Texans and the first triple-crewed row boat to finish the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, billed as the “World’s Toughest Row.” “We are so excited to have Mike headlining Picnic for the Park,” said Gary Tuma, chairman of the Cullinan Park Conservancy Board. “His story is inspirational. Not only did he and his mates row from the Canary Islands to the West Indies in 49 days, they did so under some of

the most adverse conditions. We are looking forward to hearing his story and seeing the boat that made it possible.” In addition to Matson, the Conservancy will present Ann Hamilton with the Nina Cullinan Award, given to a person instrumental in promoting and enhancing the beauty of the park. Winners of the annual Cullinan Park Conservancy Photo Contest, underwritten by Johnson Development, also will be announced. A DOCTOR’S FITNESS JOURNEY A by Marie Page

uthor and local physician Dr. Liza Leal fields a lot of questions regarding staying healthy. For her own personal fitness, Dr. Leal has chosen Koko FitClub, the digital gym alternative. As fall approaches, we asked Dr. Leal for tips on getting healthy and getting fit. Here’s what she had to say:

• Set Goals. Start with a vision. Your daughter’s wedding, your upcoming cruise vacation or your doctor’s recommendations. Make the decision that your mind and body are ready to commit to a new better change. • Keep it Fun. Find an activity that is fun for you. I love Koko FitClub because it’s fun and engaging. • Add Friends. You are more likely to do something that you enjoy with friends. You are also more likely to continue doing something when you have a sense of commitment and accountability to your workout partner. • Be Open to Change and Integrate. Find ways to integrate fitness into activities you enjoy. • Find Peace. I utilize the recordings at KoKo FitClub during cardio for tranquility, stress relief and increased knowledge. • Start Now. Make the decision to do it NOW! No excuses make it happen.

“Koko FitClub’s ‘smart training’ is your personal coach that can get you started quickly and maximize your time and energy,” continues Dr. Leal. “It is programmed to your personal needs and can be modified for YOU. My patients and myself all have needs that are specific. I have rheumatoid arthritis, and my program works for me. Literally, my first goal was to take a step, learn to walk and then ultimately return to skiing. This ski season, the Koko FitClub personal trainers and my personal Smartraining program helped me reach my goal: over 15 miles of vertical skiing a day. It’s really all about YOU at Koko FitClub. Take the first step and check it out!” Read more about Dr. Leal’s personal journey in her latest book, “Live Well with Chronic Pain: A Guide to Taking the First Steps.”

Post-Traumatic Mess

ow that summer has come and gone, in what state is your home? If it’s not as tidy as usual, that’s completely understandable. Having the kids home over the break takes its toll on cleanliness. Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services is here to get your house back to that pre-summer state. Imelda Mahoney, who co-owns Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services with her daughter Casandra, says, “Summers can be hectic and house cleaning can get overlooked. We believe mom and dad deserve to enjoy a clean house, without any hassle at all! That’s why our team of trained professionals make it possible for you to enjoy a little well-deserved peace after the long summer.” It’s easy to keep the kids on track with chores during the school year. But let’s face it, it’s hard to stick to a schedule

during the summer break. Between keeping them occupied and busy--and getting yourself to work every day--you don’t really have time to tidy up. While mom is away, the kids will play. After you leave for work in the morning, the mess starts accumulating. By the time you get off, you may not have the energy to divvy up the chores between kids. Thanks to Mahoney’s, this fall you can head to work, the kids can go to school, and the professionals can handle the cleaning. Your Mahoney’s team is bonded and insured. They arrive in a company car and will add shine to your house and your life. Reward surviving summer with a well-deserved house cleaning. Get back to the normal routine of things and leave the cleaning to the professionals!

Imelda’s Insight Do your shower heads spit out water in a strange manner? It may be calcium and lime build up. Tie a plastic baggie filled with vinegar around your shower head and let it sit for a few hours. Remove the bag and your shower head will work like it’s brand new! Tip: This same method can be used to remove mineral deposits from faucets.

hen David Leung wanted to retile his living room, kitchen, hallway and dining room, he got several bids. “I chose Lone Star Floors,” says David, “because they were very easy to work with. The pricing was fair and they made it very simple. I felt the other bids nickel and dimed me to death! I also felt Lone Star Floors had a good selection of tile, including the tile we wanted.” David got his quote from Lone Star Floors back in January. He says, “We had planned to start right away, but a lot happened in our family and we put the work on hold. When I stopped back in at Lone Star Floors in early July, they easily pulled up my bid. We made a few changes and were ready to go. Again, just very easy to work with. Our estimate was four weeks...the Lone Star crew finished in less than three. We had no issue during the time they were in our home.” Locally owned by cousins Mohamed Naser, Ziad Mukhaimer, and Imad Mansour, Lone Star Floors has been in business for more than thirty years. The Lone Star Floors commitment to you, their customer, is to give the best quality and experience possible. Mohamed says, “For every floor we sell, we install it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. There’s no cutting corners, no shortchanging on materials, and job preparation is done correctly. Everything by the book. And should you have a problem, give us a call and we handle it immediately. Ziad and Imad have both worked as installers, they understand both sides of the fence.” In addition to flooring, Lone Star Floors does full kitchen

and bathroom remodeling—including plumbing, shower glass, painting and granite. “Lone Star Floors did a great job,” says David. “My wife is very impressed with our new floors. I do recommend them to others!”

cozy fire in the fireplace? Drinking a piping hot beverage that isn’t your morning coffee? It’s almost impossible to think about as we wrap up the brutally hot summer. And what about tuning up your furnace? Having your furnace inspected annually is not only necessary for the proper functioning of your furnace, it can save your life. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Every year, 20,000 to 30,000 people in the United States are sickened by accidental carbon monoxide poisoning, and approximately 500 people die... most of them in their own homes. Deciding to just get the furnace inspected next year isn’t an option, even though it’s very easy to put off. When is the best time to have an expert come out to inspect your furnace? The answer may surprise you! “The best time is in the summer,” says Brian Jackson of Jackson Air and Heat, Sugar Land’s oldest Trane air-conditioning dealer and longtime expert in all things air and heating related. “First, in just a few weeks, it’s going to get cold. Approximately 1 in 4 divorces in 2010 involved couples age 50 and older— doubling the divorce rate for that age group since 1990.

S

ilver divorce is a term that describes late-inlife divorce or divorce for couples who have been married for 20, 30, and even more than 40 years. People are living longer and recognizing that life is short. With the taboo of divorce declining and divorces becoming more acceptable, many are seeking the joy of the freedom they have denied themselves for so long. However, things to consider when pursuing a

silver divorce are often very different from those pursuing the dissolution of a shorter term marriage. Ronique Bastine Robinson, founder of Bastine Law Group, says, “Many people considering silver divorce are either in or very near retirement...and therefore much closer to living on a fixed income. In this situation, the financial aspects of a silver divorce become extremely important. One has to determine how they are going to live on one income, something they have not had to do for a very long time. If you are the non-wage earner— meaning you have stayed home, raised children, and supported the household—then it is a very daunting prospect for you as to what you will do for income. Texas does have spousal maintenance, but we do not have alimony. The difference between alimony and spousal maintenance is that alimony can be used to maintain a standard of living and spousal maintenance is used to support your minimum, reasonable needs. These two can be drastically different! What we can do to

281.240.7979

bridge the gap is utilize post marital agreements and contractual agreements. By using these agreements, individuals can secure their lifestyles in a way that the parties agree on, and in a way that is feasible for the wage earner to maintain and for the non-wage earner to sustain.” An experienced family law firm like Bastine Law Group can practically navigate you through both the complex legalities of silver divorce, as well as the emotional journey that accompanies the process. “It may not be easy,” says Ronique. “But together we can find life, and freedom, on the other side.”

by Amy Sharp hat’s what Shelley Clark told us about SuperSlow Zone, Sugar Land’s unique approach to strength building, weight loss and general exercise. Shelley’s interest in SuperSlow Zone was sparked by a Facebook post. “I had tried a few of the popular gyms,” says the 60-year-old. “And decided that I’m too old for that! This looked like something I could do.” What’s different about SuperSlow Zone? “The thing that impressed me the most during my consultation with Maeve King (General Manager) was that you only have to do this workout twice a week for 20 minutes,” says Shelley. “I mean...everybody can do that, so I signed up! That was six months ago, and I still really enjoy going. I love that it’s a small atmosphere, not a big gym. And all I have to do is sit down and do the machines. The instructors set everything up, including what weight to do. They do all the thinking for me! Doing this on my own, I would give up after three or four reps. That doesn’t happen at SuperSlow Zone because my expert instructor is with me, coaching me and encouraging me to finish. I like that there’s really no way to get hurt... you do each exercise very slowly. And the best part! You don’t sweat. I just show up in whatever clothes I’m wearing, which is awesome. I do my 20 minute session and go directly to church or one of my volunteer jobs. Sometimes I run errands after…whatever I want to do, there’s not a problem with smelling of sweat!” “I highly recommend SuperSlow Zone,” continues Shelley. “I’m definitely stronger. I can now easily lift my groceries. I walk about five miles a week, and I used to experience lower back pain after walking. Not anymore. It’s working for me! I’ve told a lot of my Shelley Clark with her instructor John, still going strong! friends...just go for the consultation and really see what it’s all about. It’s a very clean place SuperSlow Zone that’s nice and cool, and the atmosphere is very family-like. Taking Care of People

by Amy Sharp

It’s What She Loves

S

ometimes the best businesses are born because others notice you love what you do. This is exactly what happened to Tamara Wellington. It all started 10 years ago when Tamara’s aunt and sister were caring for an elderly couple. “They needed someone else,” says Tamara. “And I told them I could do it. The husband has since passed, and today the wife is still my client and one of my best friends!” Tamara’s exposure grew when a friend working at a rehabilitation facility referred her to a lady being released. Tamara says, “I lived with and cared for this individual for a month. Doctors and therapists constantly asked what company I worked for. One doctor told me he had never seen my client look so good. He said she was dying, and I brought her back to life. He asked if I had ever considered opening a company.” The idea set in motion, Tamara’s two clients convinced her to go for it. Loving Arms Senior Assistance is the culmination of Tamara’s love for people. Dedicated to improving the lives of those who are aging, have disabilities, or who are recovering from an illness, surgery, or hospitalization, services include companionship,

meal preparation, light housekeeping, transportation, 24 hour care, medication reminders, in-home hair, nail and skin care by licensed cosmetologists, and recreational activities. Tamara says, “We tailor a plan of care for each client, changing as needs change. I hold weekly meetings with my staff to ensure we are providing the very best care for every client every single day.” And it’s working. “We’ve never had an issue. Every client has been with me since the beginning.” Originally from Jamaica, Tamara grew up in the Alief area. Her husband Ronald Scott is her rock and her jack-of-all-trades for Loving Arms Senior Assistance. Tamara’s children—Daunte, Tamya, Dustin and Jeremiah—and fur babies Blossom and Annabell are growing up in the family business. “Jeremiah is five and wants to be a police officer and drive a fire truck,” says Tamara. “He also loves taking care of people!” The Loving Arms Senior Assistance staff is available for commercial supplemental staffing Loving Arms Senior Assistance as well as private in-home care. Partners in Total Health Dr. by Amy Sharp

Shel (Shelena Lalji) of Dr. Shel Wellness & Aesthetic Center has been providing compassionate care for more than 25 years right here in Sugar Land. And for the last 10 years, Dr. Shel has partnered with Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy to take care of her patients. She says, “The best wellness teams include the doctor, the patient and a pharmacist. The pharmacists at Campbell’s Compounding are a great part of my team.” “Here, we practice what is called Functional Medicine,” continues Dr. Shel. “It’s a combination of the best traditional and integrative approaches to treat the whole patient. We don’t treat your symptoms, we get to the root of cause of your problem. Through the partnership with Campbell’s, we are able to give our patients the best of what they need: If we can’t find it, we formulate it.” Dr. Shel has used Campbell’s to compound specific medications for conditions like hormone deficiency, hair regrowth, libido, vaginal rejuventation and vaginal dryness. Owned by Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm.D., R.Ph, Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy has been partnering with doctors like Dr. Shel since 2003 to make medication in doses that are exactly right for you and your total health. “Working with your

physician, we can compound drugs in a wide variety of ways, including liquids, gels, creams, ointments, nasal sprays, suppositories, lozenges and lollipops…and to some we can even add flavors,” says Dr. Campbell. “We are proud to be a pharmacy that cares for you and your family across the board.” This year, Dr. Shel’s thriving practice welcomed Dr. Anne Marie Ponce de Leon. Dr. Ponce de Leon has been trained by Dr. Shel herself in Functional Medicine. Dr. Ponce de Leon says, “I thoroughly enjoy spending time getting to know my patients and gaining an indepth understanding of how a patient’s various aspects of life—such as their family, relationships and occupation—play a role in health and well being. Karisue and Ricky Nelson’s Story

arisue and Ricky Nelson lived in their Quail Valley home for 27 years. “It’s the house our kids grew up in,” says Karisue. “We made the very hard decision to sell it for quality of life reasons. We are getting older and all of our bedrooms were upstairs. I’ve had a knee replacement surgery and other surgeries...and it was hard. We really needed a one story.”

The Nelsons met KW (Keller Williams) Southwest agent Sharon Parker last year at an event in Missouri City. “Sharon had a booth, and we just talked to her for a while,” says Karisue. “We could tell she was very knowledgeable and knew the real estate business. Now if you would have told us then that we would be putting our home on the market and buying a house this year, we would have said, ‘No way!’ But things change and when we made this difficult decision, we remembered Sharon and called her to help us.” Sharon helped stage the Nelsons home before putting it on the market. “She was very sensitive to the fact that cost saving was a priority...we needed our funds for our next home purchase,” says Karisue. “We did everything Sharon advised, including Open Houses on back to back weekends. We were very pleased with the traffic through our house and the marketing strategy. Sharon was with us from the beginning to closing. Like most people, we wanted to know how much we would make. When we got our

check in hand, the number was within $400 of Sharon’s estimate. I was impressed it was so accurate!” For their new home, Karisue and Ricky were open to both buying or building. Karisue says, “Sharon got to know our personalities and recommended a neighborhood she thought we would really like. It’s oversized lots and they had a great one story floor plan we could build. It was a good fit all around! Our new home won’t be ready until mid October, so Sharon found us an apartment and worked out a deal where we could go month to month. We ended up not using it—a friend had a rental house we could live in—but we really appreciated her taking care of us!” “We highly recommend Sharon and KWSW. She is very professional and has a personality that allows you to talk to her when you have concerns. Our new yard has an existing tree that is leaning. We thought it might be a hazard and expressed our concerns to Sharon. She did the legwork with the HOA and the builder and the tree is being removed. She just makes everything work smoothly!” Ready for a smooth transition into a home that is perfect for your current stage of life? Give the team at KWSW a call today! grade. Melanie says, “At nine years old, Jordan’s vision suddenly declined. I had a real ‘feel bad’ mom moment. We were at a baseball game, and Jordan kept asking me the score. I finally said, ‘It’s right there on the scoreboard!’...but 22 ~ UPCLOSE ~ September 2018

Jordan couldn’t see it. I took him in to see Dr. Arnold, who assured me a sudden change in vision like Jordan’s was not uncommon. When we picked up his first pair of glasses, he remarked on the way home how he could now see the blades of grass! Today my entire family wears glasses, and the kids off and on wear contacts fitted by Today’s Vision Sugar Land. My husband Steven is diabetic, so Dr. Arnold is keeping a close eye on that too. But thankfully, he has had no vision problems.” Staying on top of the latest technology is a priority at Today’s Vision Sugar Land, and one of their specialties is fitting patients in contacts who previously thought they couldn’t wear them. Last summer, Melanie was one of those people. “I have prism correction in one eye and wear progressive bifocals,” says Melanie. “Last summer I tried specialty contacts. Dr. Arnold worked hard to fit me in contacts and he was really sweet. But after Hurricane Harvey hit, I just kind of gave up. But I know the option is out there.” “I love that many of the people at Today’s Vision Sugar Land have been there as long as I have,” continues Melanie. “I’ve known Patrick and Modesta (optical staff members) forever,

and they know me. Everyone is so friendly and fun. I’m a bit of a jokester myself, and they make me smile. I just love them!” In addition to Dr. Arnold, the team of doctors at Today’s Vision Sugar Land includes Dr. Jocelyn S. Horiszny, Dr. Kristyn Reed and Dr. Joseph A. Janes. “I think we’ve seen them all,” says Melanie. “Sometimes when we are running late to get in for a checkup, it’s challenging to get in to see Dr. Arnold. Apparently he’s a lot of people’s fave! But every doctor we’ve seen has done a great job.” As a school counselor, Melanie often finds herself recommending Today’s Vision Sugar Land to parents and friends. “Everyone is always so happy to get their glasses, and it’s always a great experience. HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS, DOCTOR OF CHIROPRACTIC WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

Something to

Celebrate!

D

by Sara Adams

orothy Fikac will never forget the date of her first appointment with Dr. Steve Harris of Sugar Land Health Center. It was her 60th wedding anniversary, and it was her sweet husband Marvin who insisted she make that appointment. Marvin had read about the success Dr. Harris was having in helping people get rid of pain they had been having for years. He told Dorothy, “That’s who you need to see.” Marvin not only suggested that Dorothy consult Dr. Harris, he went with her on her first visit. Sixty years ago, Dorothy was sitting at a red light when a moving van hit her car so hard she ended up in the back seat. She has had back problems all of her life as a result of that accident. More recently, she had a bad fall and broke her hip which required surgery and two months of rehabilitation therapy. Dorothy says that she has never really been out of pain since she broke her hip, and she had to use a cane to get around. All of that changed. After only seven visits with Dr. Harris, Dorothy was pain free, walking without a cane, breathing better and standing straighter. “I didn’t want to do too much too soon,” says Dorothy. “I’m in shock at how good I feel.” As she continued her treatment, she began to add more activity. Dorothy received Spinal Decompression Traction, Class IV Hot Laser Therapy and Gentle Impulse Adjusting Method. When reexamined, Dorothy’s spine was almost completely straight. On Dorothy’s first visit with Dr. Harris the x-ray showed that her spine curved to the left 1.60 inches off from being straight; after treatments, her spine is aligned and only 0.27 inches off the straight line. That’s a 1 1/3” structural correction of her spine! Dr. Steve Harris offers a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with chronic pain, or to help improve their overall musculoskeletal function and health. Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982, and has been in practice for 41 years. Known for incorpo-

rating new technology and techniques that complement his safe and holistic approach, Dr. Harris offers chiropractic care, pain relief, spinal decompression, rehabilitation and so much more. At 80, Dorothy says, “You’re never too old to take care of yourself. I did not want to have to stay at home and not be able to walk. So when Marvin told me about Dr. Harris, I said, ‘Ok, it’s our anniversary and I’m going to try something new’…and I’m glad I did!”
