Helping Patients

eight-loss surgery, or bariatric surgery, can be a life-changing procedure that helps you control your weight and improve many weight-related health conditions. The expert weight-loss surgery team at Houston Methodist West Hospital, led by Bariatric Surgeon Laura Choi, MD, is dedicated to helping you lose weight and live a longer, healthier life. Meet Dr. Choi Dr. Choi was born in South Korea. “My family moved to New York when I was 10,” says Dr. Choi. “I have two sisters, and my parents were very progressive. They wanted careers for their three girls.” While studying for her bachelor’s, Dr. Choi became inspired by the healing power of medicine. “I was specifically interested in surgery. I trained to be broad-based, but weight-loss surgery and minimally invasive surgery were the new technologies back then. I became interested in bariatric surgery (weightloss surgery) because it’s an operation that can completely transform lives. Most surgeries are designed to repair a person back to where they were. In contrast, with bariatric surgery, our goal is for the patient to function, feel and look better than they ever have!” Dr. Choi has been performing bariatric surgeries since 2004. “The surgery has evolved, and over time, I’ve also learned from my patients. I feel I can provide even better care based on past experiences. I am committed to preparing my patients for a good experience, and a safe and effective outcome...setting them up for lifelong success.” And that success is fostered in an environment that cares. “Here at Houston Methodist, there is a tangible sense of providing care in a very compassionate and understanding way,” says Dr. Choi. “This is an environment where everyone feels cared for, including staff and doctors. Then we, in turn, treat patients well. You really get the best from everyone at Houston Methodist!”

Weight-loss surgery can help you lose weight and improve many obesityrelated health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea. “The myth,” says Dr. Choi, “is that it’s the easy way out. That is far from the truth. Surgery is one tool we have available to empower patients to take control of their health. It’s not just about pounds; it’s about improving health and resolving weightrelated medical concerns. Through our various programs—including weight management, behavioral therapy, exercise therapy and nutritional counseling— these patients become success stories.” “Generally our patients are 100 pounds or more overweight, have a BMI above 40, or are suffering from weight-related conditions,” says Dr. Choi. Where’s Rowdy? F
by Amy Sharp
ifth generation Katy resident Rowdy Robertson sums up his career, his life, in one simple sentence: “I enjoy helping people with their needs.” And as most of us can attest, Rowdy has done just that. There’s a good chance that over the past 18 years you’ve purchased a car from Rowdy. “I’ve helped grandparents, parents and even their kids purchase vehicles here in Katy,” says Rowdy. “I have really enjoyed building relationships and dealing with my repeat customers.” Or maybe you’ve been touched by Rowdy’s 501(c)(3) organization, Old Katy Originals—a group of five Katy High School graduates dedicated to supporting Katy ISD FFA and its students. But did you know Rowdy’s life has started a new chapter? Rowdy Robertson is the newest salesperson at locally owned and operated Classic Chevy Sugar Land. An 8th year in a row GM Dealer of the Year, Classic Chevy Sugar Land has a long-standing reputation for fair dealings and no high pressure sales tactics...a place where sales people are approachable, not aggressive, and they genuinely want to make you happy. Sounds like the perfect place for Rowdy, right? We think so too! Rowdy says, “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work at a big dealership like Classic Chevy Sugar Land. Our inventory is huge! We have something for everyone, and I can’t wait to meet new clients and catch up with old friends too.” A sneak peak at what’s on the horizon: Rowdy is super excited about the 2020 HD Silverado available later this year. “It’s a complete makeover of the old HD Silverado, with a new body style and new styling. It’s a can’t miss.” Classic Chevy Sugar Land owner Jeff Sebastian says, “My wife Tiffany and I are elated to welcome Rowdy to the Classic Chevy Sugar Land family. His proven track record for putting customers’ needs first is a perfect fit here at Classic Chevy Sugar Land. Know Your Traffic Patterns
D
by Sarah Warburton
o you know the traffic patterns in your home? They aren’t marked with signs or lined with lights or arrows...but if you choose the wrong flooring the wear and tear of foot traffic can show! We asked Lone Star Floors owners (and cousins!) Mohamed Naser, Ziad Mukhaimer and Imad Mansour how to choose the best flooring for every room. The first question: Where does rush hour hit in your home? Probably the hallways, family room or game room! Ziad says, “Don’t worry, you don’t have to use industrial-style flooring in these areas. Durable wall-to-wall or berber carpets can be stylish and stain-resistant. Some families love the look of brick or tile, especially in a game room. And you don’t have to give up your hardwood flooring in high-traffic areas. We have hardwood flooring from all the top brands, including Shaw, Mohawk, and Stainmaster, with an aluminum oxide finish and a separate fifty-year warranty on the finish. Mirage also makes flooring in Red Oak, Yellow Birch, Brazilian Cherry, Santos Mahogany, African Sapele, Tigerwood, and Hard Maple that can be enhanced with UV inhibitors in the finish to protect against fading and a polymerized, titanium finish––one of the best in the industry. In fact, they warranty the finish for twenty-five years...and the structural integrity of the floor for a lifetime!” If your foyer opens out into formal living or dining rooms, these lower-traffic areas are an opportunity to explore distressed wide-plank flooring or lush piled carpeting. Mohamed says, “In areas that get a little less foot traffic––the formal rooms, the study, or bedrooms––you can have pretty much any flooring you want. Lush pile carpet is a popular choice, but those with allergies may choose to go with a hardwood instead. Of course, Zaid, Imad and I always say that flooring has come such a long way that we can find a durable solution that delivers just about any look you want... even in your highest-traffic areas.” You can imagine the flooring of your dreams by speeding over to Lone Star Floors with a sketch of your floor plan. Mohamed, Ziad and Imad will help you unite the kind of flooring you need with the gorgeous look you want. Imad says, “Whether you’re replacing flooring in just one area of your home or you’re doing it all at once, you’ll need a plan. Come see why our beautiful selection, amazing customer service and the best prices around keep foot traffic flowing to our store. Visit one of our showrooms today!”

Very Professional, From Beginning to End by Amy Sharp
Margarita Olivas bought a house last April. “We knew it needed
a lot of repairs,” says Margarita. “But when the rain started leaking in, I wasn’t sure what to do. I remembered my friend Karla’s husband, Henry Viesca, owned ProRoofs Restoration. I gave Henry a call.” “I don’t live close by, but Henry agreed to drive out to my house to take a look and check my roof,” continues Margarita. “He told me he would arrive between 8 and 9am. He was very prompt, arriving right at 8.” Henry determined a new roof was the best route for Margarita. She says, “On the day we did the Henry Viesca roof, he said to expect him and his crew at 7am. They were at my house at 6:45. My house is 2100 sq ft and two story. They finished the roof in one day. Henry dropped in several times during the day to make sure everything was fine. Everyone was very nice and professional. And at the end of the day, they cleaned up everything—including the old roof—and hauled it away.” So impressed with ProRoofs Restoration, Margarita asked them to help with a hole in the garage ceiling. “My washer is upstairs. When we first moved in, the hose was not connected correctly. Luckily it leaked over the garage, but it left a big hole in the ceiling. Since ProRoofs Restoration also does remodeling, I asked if they could fix that hole. Henry went and picked up the supplies and they got it done. It looks like nothing ever happened!” Henry has been walking, fixing and installing roofs in Katy for more than ten years. Every member of his team has been trained and educated to diagnose, repair, and replace your home’s roof. Roof inspections include photos and a report detailing how many years your roof has left. As Margarita learned, additional ProRoofs Restoration services include floors, siding, gutters, fences, windows, doors, patios, and painting inside and out. ProRoofs Restoration ProRoofs Restoration is both insured and bonded for your protection. “Oh yes, I absolutely 281-994-9244 recommend Henry and his crew,” says Margarita. “Very professional, from beginning to end.” www.proroofsrestoration.com 6 ~ UPCLOSE Katy ~ Feb-Mar 2019

Four Years In A Row!

n a world where things sometimes feel a little topsy-turvy, it’s nice to know which brands to trust. It gives us great peace of mind knowing our cars are going to start, our smartphones will find a signal, and our air conditioning systems are always going to blow cold. But with so much advertising hype out there, how can we tell which products are the most reliable? Conducted by wholly independent Lifestory Research, “America’s Most Trusted” is a designation awarded annually to only one consumer brand per category. Thirty-thousand people rank over 3,000 brands based on performance, price and overall dependability. And the consumers have spoken. For the fourth year in a row, Trane is America’s most trusted heating, ventilation and air conditioning manufacturer. If Trane is the #1 indoor comfort solutions manufacturer in the United States, who is the best Trane dealer in Katy? True Fix A/C & Heating: a Trane Comfort Specialist who’s been providing quality work right here in Katy for more than 42 years. “We weren’t surprised that Trane received the ‘America’s Most Trusted’ designation,” says True Fix owner Gerald Svetlik. “We could have carried any line of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems out there, but there’s a reason we’ve always gone with Trane. Their equipment is practically indestructible. For a climate like ours, we need heavy-duty air conditioners like the Trane XV20i...which not only cools your house perfectly with no hot spots, but saves you a ton of money when temperatures are at their highest. Customers rave about how quiet these systems are, how costefficient, and how effectively they remove humidity.” When a brand like Trane is ranked number one consistently over several
years, it is a testament to the trust people place in the brand and the products they offer. Trane has racked up countless recognitions and awards, including ‘Greenest HVAC products’ in the Readers’ Choice Survey of building professionals. Gerald says, “It feels really good knowing we provide you with the best.” And True Fix? Customer service is why they’ve been in business for more than four decades. True Fix is EPA and NATE certified, a BBB gold star member, and a member of the Katy Chamber of Commerce. Gerald says, “My wife Kim and I love Katy. We raised our family here. It’s why giving you the best service and the best indoor comfort solutions is so important to us as your neighbors and as a family-owned business. We know you can trust Trane, and we know you can trust us to make sure your family is safe and comfortable. Give us a call, and we will show you the difference a Trane makes!”

IT’S LIKE A NEW SET OF

K
aty High School graduate Tyler Carpenter is on scholarship at Southwestern Oklahoma State University where he’s a catcher on the baseball team. Tyler says, “Even with contacts, I’ve always struggled with actually seeing the baseball...it looked more like a white blur coming at me. My dad connected me with Dr. Mostaghimi at Today’s Vision Cinco Ranch. When Dr. Mostaghimi described Senaptec Vision Training to my dad, he thought maybe it could help me!” Senaptec Vision Training is a type of training designed to improve focus, coordination and quickness. Dr. Mostaghimi says, “Understanding and being able to modify how your mind and body react to stimuli can make you a better athlete. With Senaptec, it’s possible to assess and analyze your current sensory performance and to improve on it, giving you a competitive edge.” Sensory performance factors measured include: •R eaction time: How quickly you react to visual signals • Go/no go: How you react to pressure
•C ontrast sensitivity: How you judge differences in contrast • Visual clarity: How well you see distant details • Hand-eye coordination: How well you can respond by hand to changing targets • Perception span: How you visually take in important information • Depth perception: How well you can judge depth at a distance • Near-far quickness: How fast you can change your attention between distances • Target capture: How rapidly you can recognize peripheral targets • Multiple object tracking: How well you track an object through space Tyler did his initial sensory performance test at the beginning of last summer. He says, “Every test was difficult for me, especially my tracking ability and how quickly I changed from far to near distance.” As one might imagine, improvement in these areas would be highly beneficial for a baseball player at bat, as well as a catcher. “I did my eye training with the Senaptec strobe glasses at home throughout the summer,” continues Tyler. “And every couple of weeks, I returned to Dr. Mostaghimi’s office for training sessions. By the end of the summer, it was like I had a new set of eyeballs! On the tracking test, I hit 27 dots in 30 seconds...up from my initial test where I hit none! Now, I can actually see the skin of the baseball. Behind the plate, I see the pitch before it gets to me. I definitely recommend Dr. Mostaghimi and Senaptec Vision Training. It’s been a big game changer for me!” For more information on Senaptec Vision Training, visit www. tvcincoranch.com/senaptec-vision-training. DENTAL Health: Pro Tips for Parents
He’s the Wizard of Teeth O
by Olivia Cane
nce upon a time, there was a kind wizard named Faisal M. Khan, D.D.S. of Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental who could do amazing and miraculous things with children’s teeth. If those teeth had been improperly brushed, he knew just the right words to get that child back on track. When teeth had cavities, the Wizard Khan could fill those cavities in the twinkling of an eye with little or no protest from the patient. The Wizard’s skill and understanding were legendary. But what was just as exciting was the fact that his headquarters were the “bestest fun” in all the land according to pint-sized experts in the field. “Going to the dentist doesn’t have to be scary,” explains Dr. Khan. “Creating a kid-friendly environment is really important. Seeing the dentist—I mean wizard— should be something kids look forward to, not dread. We go out of our way to make our young patients feel comfortable and happy. And with three kids of my own, I know that a happy child makes your life a lot easier, and happens to be a lot easier to work on, too.” With just that in mind, Dr. Khan and his warm, wonderful staff created an underwater paradise of wall murals full of friendly clown fish, curious seahorses, and beautiful blue oceans rippling with seaweed. Turtles? He’s got them. Dolphins, too! In addition to frolicking sea

It takes time to build up beneficial bacteria and insect activity. “But the problem,” says Bruce, “is the use of synthetic fertilizers with high levels of salinity. Dr. Khan’s pediatric patients may show up for the fun, but his patients’ parents are glad to know that Dr. Khan is a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist/Diplomat of Pediatric Dentistry. “We love our patients,” says Dr. Khan. “We get smiles the old-fashioned way—by earning them. Make an appointment and see for yourself what it feels like to actually look forward to an office visit. And don’t forget to say ‘Hi’ to our turtle!” Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental Faisal M. sary insect activity. If you weed and feed, that too can migrate to your beds. We’ve lost the natural environmental process over time due to extensive use of synthetic fertilizers.” So you’ve looked and looked, and you have little to no earthworms. Now what? “You need the microbials and bacteria back for insects to thrive and bolster earthworm activity,” says Bruce. “Horse and chicken manure and/ or composting are fantastic and organic. But it takes a tremendous amount, and compost piles are something many don’t want their children to find and play in. Mulch and putting grass clippings back into the lawn also help. The decomposition process will bolster earthworm activity. I always recommend mulching in both spring and fall. And finally, the new organic fertilizers that contain microbials do the same thing as composting. The microbials are added back to your beds, and bacteria and insects can grow...soon you’ll find those precious earthworms again.” Want more tips on achieving a great yard? Give Bruce a call. At NaturaLawn of America, Bruce offers aeration, seeding, insect control and organic-based lawn care...and he’s always happy to provide tips and advice!

You’ll pull off the winter leaf tissue, clean up the thatch, and your soil temperature will warm up faster...giving you a fantastic spring lawn!

erri Varvel discovered Shilpa Chandiwal, DDS at Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry when she was searching for a pediatric dentist near her home that saw special needs patients. Terri’s fifteen-year-old daughter Lexi has cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy affects a person’s ability to finely coordinate the muscles around the mouth and tongue...making going to the dentist even harder than it is for most kids. “Before we started seeing Dr. Shilpa,” says Terri, “I always felt like Lexi’s teeth were only getting half cleaned. Opening her mouth is not easy for her. She really has to think about it and concentrate...to both open it and keep it open. Dr. Shilpa is so patient. She will bring in two or three assistants to help. They are able to get x-rays done, and take the time to really clean Lexi’s teeth. I feel our first visit there was Lexi’s first really good cleaning! I also love that everyone at Dr. Shilpa’s office talks to Lexi. Lexi is nonverbal, so communication is challenging. But they talk to her and DENTIST LOCATIONS CARE Lexi smiles. She likes Dr. Shilpa’s office and is never scared. I can always tell she is happy to be there!” Dr. Shilpa has also done some tooth extractions for Lexi to allow for orthodontic work. “Although it was challenging to do it in the office setting, Dr. Shilpa wanted to try it...and Lexi was fine with just local anesthesia! I was so proud of her and Dr. Shilpa,” says Terri. “All children should have access to complete and thorough dental care,” says Dr. Shilpa. “I’m so proud of Lexi. She is brave and focused during our appointments. Here at my office, it’s important that no child feels traumatized. MD Medical Group opened its newest MD Kids Pediatrics practice right here in Richmond— just off the Westpark Tollway at FM 723—under the direction of Zaineth Nunes Montiel, MD, FAAP. Dr. Nunes knew she wanted to be a physician in the 9th grade. “I never changed my mind,” says Dr. Nunes. “My older sister is a pediatrician, and I loved watching her. During my pediatric rotation in medical school, I realized pediatrics is my passion. Children stole my heart. Being able to see them grow, and building a relationship with them and their parents is something that I love about being a pediatrician. It’s very rewarding to help them when they are sick. Going to the doctor can be scary, but I want them and their parents to feel comfortable because we are here for them.” At MD Kids Pediatrics, same day appointments and walk ins are accommodated. When you call, they answer. A nurse is on call 24/7. The Richmond clinic is open Monday-Friday, 8am-6pm to give working parents extra time for doctor appointments in the evening. Need to see the doctor on Saturday? The MD Kids Pediatrics location in Cypress is open Saturdays

HER BEST YEAR YET! by Amy Sharp
L
ast spring, Jernelle Wilkins set a goal. Before her 45th birthday (May of 2019), she wanted to lose half of herself. “I needed to get back in a healthy routine,” says Jernelle. “And I needed it to be something convenient for me. I knew if I had to go out of my way, I wouldn’t do it.” Then Jernelle saw an advertisement for Koko FitClub. Koko FitClub is the digital gym that combines technology with individualized coaching to customize workouts and guide clients to success. We have three locations in the area, all locally owned by Veronica and Mark Malhiot. “One of the locations is on my way to work,” says Jernelle. “I drive by it twice a day, so I knew I would have no excuse not to go. I stopped in and met the manager, Art. He introduced me to the machines, and we took it slow. He didn’t kill me that first day and make me not want to go back! He told me there was no need to exhaust myself, and we would work up to higher levels...and it’s just taken off since that day!” “I like that there are different programs and levels, and you customize your workout based on what you want to achieve,” says Jernelle. Last April, Jernelle started with a Koko beginner program. “When I got bored with that, I moved to another. Then I did the Koko 21 Day Challenge, and that pushed me to new levels. Today, I’ve moved to the Koko X workouts...an entirely new level where I work out with one of the trainers and we never do the same thing twice! I definitely recommend Koko FitClub to anyone that just needs to get into a routine. I work out every day except Saturday and Sunday. I love that I can just show up and go, my workout is ready. It’s also quiet here...a great place if you don’t care for big gyms.” With her 45th birthday a little over three months away, Jernelle has lost almost 50 pounds. She’s also noticed a huge change in the way her clothes fit.
She says, “Eating right is part of this as well, and I love that Koko helps me with that too! I’m not sure if I will hit my goal of losing half of myself by May, but I’m sticking with the process. I’m not giving up. Forty-five is going to be my best yet!”
