When your heart needs mending

When your heart I

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Heart & Vascular Center is advancing cardiac care with new technologies and procedures – right here in Fort Bend County.

n 2007, physicians at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital performed the first open-heart surgery in Fort Bend – the successful culmination of a long, intensive effort to offer advanced cardiac care close to home. That historic procedure helped create a foundation for what is now the area’s most comprehensive cardiac care program – one with the skill, expertise and technology to offer complex diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic care across the full range of cardiac specialties.

“Creating a comprehensive cardiac care program like ours requires two different but integrated areas of focus,” said Michael H. Koo, M.D., interventional cardiologist with Houston Methodist Cardiology Associates in Sugar Land. “You have to be able to respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies, such as heart attacks. And you must be able to handle the full range of non-emergency cardiac cases, including surgical and non-surgical treatments. Both of these focus areas require significant investments in people, resources and technology; and no one else in the area is doing what we’ve been able to do.”

Surgical intervention when needed Since that historic first open-heart surgery, Houston Methodist Sugar Land has continued to expand care for cardiac patients. Today, Houston Methodist Sugar Land is the only hospital in the area with 24/7 interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery services – making it possible for heart specialists to rapidly treat patients having a heart attack or stroke within minutes of their arrival. The hospital performs hundreds of nonemergency cardiac procedures annually –

Over a decade of cardiac ‘firsts’ Since its groundbreaking openheart surgery in 2007, the Houston Methodist Heart & Vascular Center at Sugar Land has continued to bring innovative cardiac care to the local community, achieving an impressive list of Fort Bend “firsts” along the way: • Carotid artery stent procedure • Rotational atherectomy surgery • Minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting procedure • Minimally invasive aortic valve replacement • Hybrid coronary intervention In 2014, the hospital was among the first in Texas to offer patients a new implantable cardiac monitor, and the first in the U.S. to open a new hybrid operating room with an 2 ~ UPCLOSE ~ February 2019

advanced operating table that was integrated with a C-arm robotic system for angiography – enabling physicians to quickly transition patients to cardiac surgery if necessary. Recently, Houston Methodist Sugar Land became the first hospital in Fort Bend to utilize the life-saving Impella CP external heart assist device to improve blood flow and minimize organ damage during complex cardiac cases and the first in Fort Bend to treat atrial fibrillation not caused by a heart valve problem with a tiny, permanent implant called the WATCHMAN, which can significantly reduce the risk of blood clots without the use of blood thinners.

needs mending including cardiac catheterizations, which can open blocked arteries, coronary artery bypass grafts to restore blood flow and increasingly more complex cardiovascular, thoracic, endovascular and vascular surgeries. “We perform just about every type of procedure here that a patient could need – very similar to what Houston Methodist is doing in the Texas Medical Center,” said Marvin D. Atkins Jr., M.D., cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon with Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates in Sugar Land. “Patients in Fort Bend County have access to highly skilled physicians and support staff, outstanding facilities and advanced technologies. The primary difference for our patients and their family members is our convenient location, which alleviates a great deal of the stress surrounding their surgery.”

Fine-tuning the heart One rapidly growing cardiac subspecialty is electrophysiology – the diagnosis and treatment of issues related to the electrical activities of the heart. “The combination of new technologies and advancements in procedures means we have so many more tools to help patients suffering from arrhythmia and atrial fibrillation,” said Apoor Patel,

M.D., cardiac electrophysiologist with Houston Methodist DeBakey Cardiology Associates in Sugar Land. “From ablation (the scarring of heart tissue to prevent incorrect electrical signals) to a wide array of defibrillators and pacemakers, we are successfully treating many more patients and helping them lead healthier lives.”

Patients suffering from vascular disease – which includes a variety of conditions affecting the veins and arteries – can rely on Houston Methodist Sugar Land, as well. Charlie Cheng, M.D., vascular surgeon with Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates in Sugar Land, performs both endovascular (using a catheter inserted into a vein) and open surgical procedures to treat lower extremity arterial disease, aortic aneurysms, venous varicose veins, thrombotic disease and more. “Vascular disease can limit or even block the flow of blood in areas of the body, creating life-threatening conditions,” said Cheng. “But today, we can correct most vascular conditions with various types of surgical interventions – including arteriograms, endovascular procedures, venous ablation or even open surgical bypass – to restore blood flow and prevent the loss of tissue.”

vs STROKE

HEART ATTACK

Cause:

Cause:

Loss of blood flow to the brain

Loss of blood flow to heart muscle

Major Symptoms:

Major Symptoms:

Sudden onset of

• Severe chest pain, heaviness or squeezing

• Weakness/numbness on one side of the body

• Shortness of breath

• Slurred or impaired speech

• Pain in the neck and/or jaw

• Blurred, double vision or loss of vision

• Pain in the back, between the shoulders

• Dizziness, loss of balance or coordination

• Nausea, vomiting or heartburn pain

• Pain down the left arm and hand

• Sudden severe headache with no known cause

If ANY of these signs appear suddenly, call 911 immediately.

Don’t try to drive yourself or someone else to the hospital. In most cases, EMS can start treatment as soon as they arrive, up to an hour sooner than if a patient is driven by car to the ER. Emergency personnel can also get through traffic more quickly. Once at the hospital, there are medications available that may be able to stop a heart attack or stroke in progress, limiting the damage and possibly saving a life. These drugs are most effective when given as soon as possible after the onset of symptoms. Never delay seeking emergency help for heart attack or stroke signs.

iolet Tazeh started getting varicose veins after her second child was born. By the time he was seven, her right leg was really bothering her, so she sought treatment and was disappointed with the results. She had a long, painful recovery and the scarring on her shins was a constant reminder that if she had to seek treatment in the future, she would do things differently. Six years later, when the varicose veins in her left leg became hot and painful, Violet hatched a plan. She started researching doctors. She even called their office and asked questions about the services they offered. She was not going to seek help until she could find a doctor she trusted who offered an easier, more effective procedure. When Violet called the office of Dr. Ulises Baltazar and spoke with his nurse, Sonia, she felt confident about scheduling a consultation to see if she was a candidate for laser surgery. Violet says, “When I met Dr. Baltazar and Sonia, they were so friendly and caring. I felt comfortable from the beginning. Dr. Baltazar assured me that the procedure would be painless and the recovery time would be minimal. He was very precise and explained everything to me. Dr. Baltazar is so good. I was sent home with a small bandage. I had no scarring, no downtime and only minor swelling.” Dr. Ulises Baltazar is a highly regarded vein specialist. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting

from issues of the circulatory system and is a leader his field. Board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery, Dr. Baltazar is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. This past October, 15 years after her first treatment with Dr. Baltazar, Violet noticed some varicose veins on the inner thigh of her right leg and she knew exactly who to call. “Dr. Baltazar did such a good job the first time; I knew I would go back to him. I believe in him and I follow his instructions. I rested the first day and felt fully recovered. A month later when my family and I went to Whistler for a vacation, I did a lot of walking and my legs never bothered me. I had such a good experience with Dr. Baltazar and his staff that I send all my friends to see him.”

RESTORING HOPE AND FAITH FOR SINGLE MOMS IN NEED by Amy Sharp he mission of Abigail’s Place is to serve single mothers in Fort Bend County who are facing episodic homelessness—circumstances beyond their control that have left them without a place to live. These circumstances can include the loss of a job, an illness, losing a family member who was the breadwinner, or fleeing domestic violence. This organization was founded in January 2016 by Shereen Sampson. She realized there was a tremendous need for emergency housing support for displaced single mothers in Fort Bend County. In their first year, Abigail’s Place aided many single mother families in the community by assisting with housing payments, furnishing apartments, providing food and clothing, and helping to restore flood damaged homes. Then in late 2017, Abigail’s Place opened the doors of their emergency shelter, purchased through a generous financial gift and renovated with the help of many volunteers. During the first few months of operation, the shelter provided a safe haven for five families who have since found permanent housing. A non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, Abigail’s Place relies soley on private donations to continue their mission. Congressman Pete Olson and his wife Nancy are honored to help raise awareness for this worthy cause by serving as honorary chairs at their upcoming gala. Nancy says, “The support of this community is vital to Abigail’s Place. Future plans include increasing their sheltering capacity through the construction of a multi-unit complex. I invite all of you to join Pete and me in supporting this worthy cause.”

an you see the lights? Baseball season is finally here and Classic Chevy Sugar Land has the perfect truck to haul the gear and bring the team! Classic Chevy Sugar Land owner Jeff Sebastian says, “The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado is one of the most capable trucks in its class. Because of a new manufacturing strategy, the short-bed variants of the V-8 Silverado have actually lost 450 pounds compared with the last generation. It handles well for a large truck, and actually manages to make you forget how big it really is while you’re driving. It’s the perfect family vehicle!” Nobody can deny, the Silverado looks great inside and it features high quality materials throughout. It seats three in regular cab models and six in double and crew cab models. Bucket seats (instead of the standard bench) do drop the capacity by one, but there is still plenty of room for half a baseball team! If younger siblings are tagging along to the game, rear seats are equipped with two full sets of LATCH connectors for installing those car seats. Of course, you also need to bring the bats, balls, helmets and even the pitching machine! Chevrolet made the Silverado’s beds wider and deeper for 2019. Jeff says, “They’re now the largest beds in their class. You have three bed length options: 8-foot, 6-foot-6-inch, and

5-foot-8-inch. There are also several features like tie-down points, lockable bins, and a power tailgate that make hauling cargo like baseball gear much easier.” And your little team is safe. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2019 Silverado a five-star overall crash test rating. Need entertainment? Chevy has you covered. Standard features include Chevy’s Infotainment 3 system with a 7-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, a USB port, a six-speaker audio system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A Wi-Fi hot spot, three additional USB ports, wireless device charging and an upgraded Infotainment 3 system are all available options if you need to support lots of devices in the vehicle. Classic Chevy Sugar Land is a proud sponsor of our Sugar Land Little League. Jeff and his wife Tiffany say, “We are honored to announce that Sugar Land Little League is celebrating their 60th anniversary this year. Congratulations to Sugar Land Little League and everyone involved in this worthy organization. We are proud to be a part of it.” Tiffany and Jeff invite you to stop by and take a test drive today to see for yourself why the all new Silverado is the strongest, most advanced truck on the market...and perfect for baseball season. or more than 25 years, Today’s Vision Sugar Land has provided the greater Fort Bend area with access to the very latest technology in vision care. 2019 is no exception with the addition of the Tracey iTrace Wavefront Aberrometer from Houston-based Tracey Technologies and the Eaglet-Eye Eye Surface Profiler. Today’s Vision Sugar Land optometrist Dr. Joseph A. Janes explains, “The iTrace helps us address patients that come into the office with 20/20 vision and complain of blurred vision. Generally these patients have seen numerous doctors and they have several pairs of glasses and mountains of contact lenses. They complain of blurred or reduced vision during the day. Their quality of vision is reduced in dim or dark rooms, while

driving or working on the computer. Poor quality vision may be from a single source or a combination of sources, including the cornea, the crystalline lens and the retina. The iTrace helps us determine the source of the disturbance. Having the ability to isolate subtle problems will help us solve the poor quality vision that many people have!” The Eaglet-Eye Eye Surface Profiler is a very sophisticated front surface of the eye profiler. It provides a 3D image of the cornea and sclera. Dr. Janes says, “Placing a very large contact lens on the eye is a delicate balance of design. We must have the lens rest on the white portion of the eye, the sclera, and clear the cornea. We must also keep the front of the eye healthy. The Eye Surface Profiler helps us design the landing area of

the contact lens. The more we understand about the topography of the cornea, the better we can help restore vision with contact lenses. Most topographers only measure about 60% of the corneal surface. Sometimes knowing the profile of the remaining 40% is very important in making the patient a successful contact lens wearer. Our goal with the Eye Surface Profiler is to provide optimum comfort and superior eye health for those patients wearing any contact lens.” Our Today’s Vision Sugar Land team of doctors includes Dr. Janes, owner Dr. Tom Arnold and optometrists Dr. Jocelyn S. Horiszny and Dr. Kristyn Reed. “All of our patients would like to see clearly at all times,” says Dr. Janes. “That’s why we are working with several companies to help our patients see better. We believe both the iTrace and Eaglet-Eye Eye Surface Profiler will help us improve the quality of our patients’ vision!” Schedule an appointment with any of the Today’s Vision Sugar Land doctors by visiting www.2020sugarland.com or calling 281-242-2020. Our Neighborhood Italian Spot For More Than 20 Years! by Amy Sharp

ack when Highway 6 had only two lanes and Town Square did not exist, Corelli’s Italian Cafe opened its doors in Highland Square (you know the place... Half Price Books, Shipley’s, and of course... Corelli’s). This made-from-scratch Italian is so popular, the neighborhood regulars have their “days.” General Manager Sean Kennedy says, “We have Thursday night people, Saturday night people, Sunday evening people, etc.” What makes it so good? This restaurant has stayed true to who they are. “Way back when,” says Sean, “our recipes were created through extensive research in Little Italy. We wanted to be as authentic as possible. That means we have no freezer. Everything is fresh and made when you order it...and 80% of that original menu is still served today.” Families and friends gather here for fabulous entrees like the mouthwatering lasagna and the ever-popular pork chop. And don’t forget dessert. This cheesecake and tiramisu is some of the best in Houston. Wine and beer are both available, or bring your favorite bottle of wine for a small corkage fee. Happy hour runs Monday-Friday 4-7 with drinks and appetizers both on special. Kids enjoy a full menu just for them, there’s a private room, and 20 minute call ahead seating is available. Bring this homemade food to your next soiree with Corelli’s Catering, or pick it up on your way home for a fantastic meal with your family. So many ways to enjoy authentic Italian cuisine from our favorite neighborhood spot!

Know Your Traffic Patterns

D

by Sarah Warburton

o you know the traffic patterns in your home? They aren’t marked with signs or lined with lights or arrows...but if you choose the wrong flooring the wear and tear of foot traffic can show! We asked Lone Star Floors owners (and cousins!) Mohamed Naser, Ziad Mukhaimer and Imad Mansour how to choose the best flooring for every room. The first question: Where does rush hour hit in your home? Probably the hallways, family room or game room! Ziad says, “Don’t worry, you don’t have to use industrial-style flooring in these areas. Durable wall-to-wall or berber carpets can be stylish and stain-resistant. Some families love the look of brick or tile, especially in a game room. And you don’t have to give up your hardwood flooring in high-traffic areas. We have hardwood flooring from all the top brands, including Shaw, Mohawk, and Stainmaster, with an aluminum oxide finish and a separate fifty-year warranty on the finish. Mirage also makes flooring in Red Oak, Yellow Birch, Brazilian Cherry, Santos Mahogany, African Sapele, Tigerwood, and Hard Maple that can be enhanced with UV inhibitors in the finish to protect against fading and a polymerized, titanium finish––one of the best in the industry. In fact, they warranty the finish for twenty-five years...and the structural integrity of the floor for a lifetime!” If your foyer opens out into formal living or dining rooms, these lower-traffic areas are an opportunity to explore distressed wide-plank flooring or lush piled carpeting. Mohamed says, “In areas that get a little less foot traffic––the formal rooms, the study, or bedrooms––you can have pretty much any flooring you want. Lush pile carpet is a popular choice, but those with allergies may choose to go with a hardwood instead. Of course, Zaid, Imad and I always say that flooring has come such a long way that we can find a durable solution that delivers just about any look you want... even in your highest-traffic areas.” You can imagine the flooring of your dreams by speeding over to Lone Star Floors with a sketch of your floor plan. Mohamed, Ziad and Imad will help you unite the kind of flooring you need with the gorgeous look you want. Imad says, “Whether you’re replacing flooring in just one area of your home or you’re doing it all at once, you’ll need a plan. Come see why our beautiful selection, amazing customer service and the best prices around keep foot traffic flowing to our store. Visit one of our showrooms today!”

“T

hey’re all related,” says primary care physician and owner of Balanced Body Image, Dr. Julia Ward. “And they’re probably the cause of other symptoms and illnesses you are experiencing.” Have you noticed your insurance does not pay for preventative care in traditional medicine? “Medications are prescribed to mask your symptoms,” says Dr. Ward. “But the underlying cause is never explored. A good example is high blood sugar. Sure, you can take meds to lower it. But you’re not fixing the root of the problem. An analogy would be your car mechanic just turning off the ‘Check Engine’ light without fixing what’s wrong with your car. The light will just come back on again and again and again. With the medications, not only are you not fixing the problem, you are also experiencing side effects. These medications are designed for you to be on them for the rest of your life.” At Balanced Body Image, Dr. Ward specializes in functional medicine. Functional medicine addresses the root cause of your symptoms, problems and chronic diseases. Through a series of tests not typically administered in traditional medicine, Dr. Ward creates a curriculum for you to achieve

optimal health. “Micronutrient testing, expanded lipid profile, a stool analysis to determine bacteria in the gut, checking inflammation, looking at cortisol levels to determine stress and hormone replacement are some of the big ones,” says Dr. Ward. Once your personalized curriculum is ready, you can take advantage of the package service available at Balanced Body Image. “Your package covers the cost of everything you need: office visits, detoxification, all-natural supplements, a nutrition program utilizing clean and unprocessed foods, exercise guidelines, all-natural hormone replacement, and the very important but often overlooked relaxation and meditation. It’s spelled out thoroughly, and it’s extremely easy to follow. Most curriculums are three to six months in length. Once completed, many clients switch to a maintenance program to maintain the health they’ve achieved. These programs are designed to let your body heal itself, so you are no longer dependent on medication. Chronic diseases like diabetes can be reversed through an appropriate curriculum. You will feel better than ever!” Are you ready to feel your best? Optimal health starts with a functional medicine consultation. Call Balanced Body Image to schedule yours today!

Painless Dental Implants Worth the Drive by Amy Sharp

A

fter Lewis Landsman had a tooth extracted, he decided to have his daughter-inlaw’s dentist, Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S., in Stafford do an implant. “I was scared to death because I’ve heard horror stories from others,” says Lewis. “My daughter-inlaw had a good experience with Dr. Lomonte and implants. I’m not just around the corner, I live up on Lake Conroe. But I chose to drive to Dr. Lomonte based on her experience and because he is a dentist committed to keeping up with the latest and greatest of everything.” To Lewis’s surprise, he didn’t feel a thing! “The procedure was painless,” says Lewis. “Dr. Lomonte is really good. He first placed the implant, then about three months later he placed the crown on it. It fits in with my other teeth, feels great and looks so good!” But why a dental implant and not dentures or a bridge? Dr. Lomonte says, “Dental implants provide a root to secure your jawbone and gum tissue, preventing gum recession from happening. With all the associated risks, preventing gum disease can literally add years to your life… making implants a superior solution to the removable dentures and dental bridges of the past. They allow you to eat your favorite foods and chew normally, and they also address the aesthetic issues associated with missing teeth. Implants also provide a great deal of stability and security…no more embarrassing denture social situations!” Dr. Lomonte is a proud native Texan whose been practicing at this same location in Stafford on Murphy Road since 1982. His practice meets the needs of the entire family, from the simplest fillings to cosmetic reconstruction including

implants. Lewis’s daughter-in-law and son see him for all of their dentistry needs. “He also did a few fillings for my wife and she was very pleased. I hope I don’t, but if I need major work done again I will be making that drive. I recommend Dr. Lomonte to anybody...for sure!”

efore Veronica George moved to Quail Valley back in 2013, she had used several of the franchise cleaning services. “I just wasn’t pleased or overly happy with any of them,” says Veronica. “So when I first moved here, I didn’t hire anyone.” An elderly gentleman lived across the street from Veronica. “He had a two-story house,” says Veronica. “And it was clean! I asked him who did it for him. He told me Imelda Mahoney, both a personal friend of his and the owner of Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services. Then one day when I stopped in for a visit, Imelda was there! I told her I had been meaning to call. We talked prices, and Imelda and her teams have been cleaning my home ever since.” “What I’ve noticed,” says Veronica, “is my house is actually clean. With other services it was cleaner, but I didn’t feel like I was getting value. This house is also my first experience with hard-

wood floors. I never had them before, and wasn’t sure how to take care of them. These ladies clean the hardwoods all over Quail Valley and they know exactly how to take care of my home! But what I like most is the personal touch. In my five years with Mahoney’s, I’ve had three minor incidents where I found something broken, etc. Nothing major, but each time I’ve contacted Imelda and she has ‘made it good’ in various ways. So apologetic and willing to make things right. Just the right touch.” In the first years, Veronica worked from home and would schedule her cleanings when she was there. Today, Veronica works outside the home. “I now leave Imelda’s team a keyless entry code to access my home when I am not here. This is huge for me, and it took me a long time to get here. I’ve also recommended Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services on Nextdoor. I know recommendations go a long way. I myself started using Mahoney’s based on the gentleman across the street’s recommendation...and I could see his house was clean!”

rust takes years to build, seconds to break, and forever to repair. In fact, the great Scottish minister George Macdonald said, “To be trusted is a greater compliment than being loved.” But it’s not just the people in our lives we must be able to trust. It’s the things we count on to make our lives easier—air conditioning being first and foremost among them, especially in a hot, sticky climate like ours. What a good thing that Trane, manufacturer of the Trane XV20i Variable Speed air conditioner, has been identified as the Lifestory Research 2019 America’s Most Trusted® HVAC System Brand for the third year in a row! Once again, Trane produced the highest Net Trust Quotient Score, higher than Whirlpool, Carrier, Lennox, and American Standard. “If you don’t have the trust of the people you serve, you have nothing,” says Brian Jackson, owner/operator of Jackson Air and Heat, Sugar Land’s oldest Trane dealer. “But trust isn’t something you can just order on a menu. Do You Know What Kind of Pipes You Have?

Re-plumbing a House in Fort Bend by Olivia Cane

magine coming home from a lovely vacation and finding wet sheetrock peeling off your walls, water stains covering your ceiling, and water all over your floor. Unfortunately, that’s a reality for many Fort Bend residents whose homes were built before 1980. The problem?

Alan’s Plumbing. “The other sign is reduced water pressure because of all the hard water build-up inside the pipes. That corrosion usually flakes off into your water. If you’re constantly having to take your aerators off and clean them, or if the water’s just sitting there, you’ve got a situ-

The problem? Galvanized pipes. Galvanized pipes. And those pipes are now reaching the end of their life expectancy. “The first sign that your galvanized piping is about to go is corrosion, which causes leaks,” explains master plumber Luke Burkhalter of local family-owned

ation requiring immediate attention.” As a homeowner, what are your options? “Well, you can continue to make small repairs over the next six to twelve months— only delaying a necessary repiping of your house, but not really addressing the prob-

lem itself—or you can go ahead and fix the problem now,” says Luke. “Repiping is a preventative measure that can save you thousands of dollars later on.” “Fortunately, there’s PEX pipe. PEX is a revolution in modern plumbing, made from high-density polyrethylene, which creates the perfect rust-free, high-performance pipe. The pipe comes with a twenty-fiveyear manufacturer’s warranty on labor, damage and material, which is terrific. A full horizontal repipe only takes around eight to ten hours and costs about half the price of a full house repipe.” During a horizontal repipe, the pipes in your attic—the ones most likely to leak— are replaced with PEX. Perfect for a onestory house. For a two-story home, Luke recommends a full house repipe, since the sheetrock between floors will have to be cut into anyway. Even a full house repipe only takes two to three days and won’t require you to relocate during construction. In both a horizontal and a full repipe, all of your pipes are insulated and strapped, ensuring that they never rattle. All supply line valves are changed and toilets are rebuilt. “My dad Alan Burkhalter (master plumber and owner of Alan’s Plumbing) has been serving the Fort Bend area for over thirty years now,” says Luke. “My uncle Chris is also a master plumber. My brother Beau and our longtime associate Jeff Johnson are journeyman licensed. Our crew is complete with apprentices Jaime, Trevor, and my other brother Jake—we’ve been right here shoulder-to-shoulder with Dad since we were kids. We wouldn’t do this hard work if we didn’t truly love it and the community we live in.” If your house was built before 1980 and you’re not sure what kind of pipes you have, give Luke’s mom Jennifer a call to schedule your free consultation. As your friend and neighbor, Alan’s Plumbing will always be here for you!

SOUTHERN TEXAS CUISINE

P

by Amy Sharp ecan Grove family restaurant Texas Tejano is the culmination of Jorge Rosales Jr.’s life and career. “I was born in The Canary Islands (Spain),” says Jorge. “When I was young, my father and his friends opened a fine dining Italian restaurant on the 1st floor of the five story building where we lived. I was there all the time...cleaning dishes, floors and bathrooms. When I was ten, my mom moved to New York City to teach Spanish. I went with her, but divided my time. Summers were spent with my dad in Spain learning a little bit of everything...serving, customer service, food, and understanding people and their needs. I really developed a passion for it.” During high school and college, Jorge explored the restaurant scene in NYC. Several jobs led to an opportunity as a server and then manager at Meliá Hotels International under Executive Chef Scott Conant of Food Network fame. Then a former manager $59.99 Prix-Fixe Menu with requested Jorge help manage Maxwell’s Chophouse. He says, “I a FREE bottle of wine walked in at closing time in my shorts and sneakers. This was a included for couples $9 million steakhouse! I was like, ‘Holy moly, are you sure you (+tax and gratuity) want me?’ My friend assured me I just needed to do what I know: Teach the servers customer service. We did extensive training from wine to food...serving, clearing, pouring, opening bottles, etc.” In a mere three months, Maxwell’s Chophouse was #5 on The Michelin Guide’s best steakhouses in NYC. “We went from nobody to the middle of the very well-knowns!” says Jorge. But life at the steakhouse had Jorge working 80 hours a week. Seeking time with his girlfriend Alejandra, a change was in order. “We visited cities all over with a plan to open a restaurant.” And lucky for us, Jorge chose Pecan Grove! “Here at Texas Tejano,” says Jorge, “I wanted to do something different. Something good for this community. A place that feels like home with homestyle cooking. Where good food meets hospitality in an enjoyable (yet affordable!) atmosphere. Where families are delighted to eat. Our menu is a mix of Texas favorites: burgers, steaks and seafood together with Tex Mex, the heart of Texas cuisine. You can try something different every time you eat here!” And because we have sunshine almost 300 days of the year, Jorge added his touch to the bar by including refreshing authentic cocktails. The “Richmule” (Lone Star vodka, lime juice, mint, pineapple juice and ginger

We actually moved from Sugar Land to the Galleria area two years ago. Even though there is a closer Campbell’s Compounding location, I haven’t been there. I still drive to Sugar Land!” Why? “Because everyone in Sugar Land knows me by name! We have a friendly talk every time I go there. That means a lot to me. They are also very reliable and responsive and always take care of us immediately. Some of the staff have been there all six years and I’ve met new people too. It’s always the same level of amazing customer service. They are all very friendly and nice.” As a compounding pharmacy, Campbell’s is able to custom blend medication so it’s exactly what you need in the amount you need it. For those who hate pills, Campbell’s can turn your medication into a topical cream, a chewable, a liquid, or even a lollipop. And all commercial brands are stocked too! Campbell’s has an array of options for every need, every budget and almost every prescription and insurance plan. When Claudia gets busy and can’t make it to Sugar Land to pick up her medication, the staff at Campbell’s Compounding is more than happy to ship it to her with next day delivery. inety percent of the time, most of us don’t care what our insurance agent is up to. But, when a hurricane hits or the floodwaters are rising, you need someone you can count on to call with an experienced voice on the other end. John and Lisa Daugherty, owners of local Daugherty Insurance, have spent a lifetime learning and moving with the ever-changing insurance marketplace. When Hurricane Harvey threatened our area, this couple was vacationing out of the country. “So many times,” says Lisa, “it’s a false alarm. But John knew he needed to get back just in case…so he flew home.” This time, it turned out to be the real deal. John slept at the office for three days. He says, “We were answering our phones 24 hours a day, and Lisa was turning in claims from where she was to make sure they were turned in within 24 hours of the storm. We wanted our customers to have adjusters out sooner rather than later, as I knew how disastrous this situation was. I believe these are the moments we prove ourselves as a business.” And that’s just what Daugherty Insurance has been doing since they opened their doors back in 1984. “We worked out of our home at first,” says Lisa. “Then when I was balancing both a baby and a typewriter on my lap, we knew it was time to get an office and start hiring people.” For 18 years, Daugherty Insurance called an office on the corner of US59 and Kirkwood home. Six years ago, the couple purchased a cozy little house in old Sugar Land to move their office to. “We just love the warm, comfortable feel.” Daugherty Insurance is truly your one-stop-shop for all of your insurance needs- homeowner, auto, life, business insurance and more. “My course in life has been to never tell people, ‘No.’” says John. “We’re out to do everything competitively and do it well. We will always do what’s right for our customers. It’s our creed! It doesn’t matter to us if you carry a $500 policy or a $30,000 policy, everyone is equally important and deserving of outstanding customer service. We have a fantastic staff and you will never have to deal with an automated phone service. You call, we answer...and if you need us on the weekends, you can reach me on my cell phone. We are here for you when you need us.” “Selecting a policy isn’t always about what is cheapest,” continues Lisa. “That’s why we believe in educating our customers and making sure you are comparing apples to apples in coverages, and understanding what is and is not included in your policy. HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS, DOCTOR OF CHIROPRACTIC WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

C

Introduced by a Gator by Sara Adams

hristy Kroboth had been rescuing and relocating alligators for about two years when she first met Dr. Steve Harris of Sugar Land Health Center. He had called Texas Parks and Wildlife about an alligator he’d seen in his backyard by the creek. He told Christy it was a huge alligator, but when they looked, they couldn’t find him. After a thorough investigation, Christy was confident that the alligator had slipped back into the creek, and told Dr. Harris, “If he comes back, just call me.” It was only a few days later that Christy got another call about a large alligator in the Home Depot parking lot, not far from Oyster creek that runs along the back of Dr. Harris’s property. The alligator was 900 pounds and almost 14 feet long. Christy was able to subdue the gator and safely relocate him, but not before she was knocked to the ground by the power of his tail. Although Christy had some initial pain after her fall, she didn’t seek help. For three years the pain would come and go, but by the end of 2017, Christy says, “I was in pain all the time. I had to step back from doing what I love. Then one day, I bent down and reached for a box of cat litter and I couldn’t pick it up. My fingers went numb, and my back hurt so bad I could barely move. I was on the bathroom floor starting to get really scared, and then I remembered Dr. Harris, I called his office, and saw him the same day!” Dr. Harris offers a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with chronic pain or to help improve their overall musculoskeletal function and health. Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982, and has been in practice for over 40 years. Known for incorporating new technology and techniques that complement his safe and holistic approach, Dr. Harris offers gentle chiropractic care. Through his years as a chiropractor, Dr. Harris has developed his own methods and treatments for every layer of the body to promote healing. Before Christy consulted Dr. Harris her pain made it difficult to work. She says, “The pain took my joy away. I couldn’t live my life. If anyone is in pain, you don’t have to live with it. Don’t put it off…just go ahead and see Dr. Harris. He can work wonders. After being treated by Dr. Harris, I feel like I can do anything. I have no pain.”
