ommunity outreach. It’s the backbone of the giving back philosophy at Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land. Owner Jeff Sebastian says, “We are so fortunate to have so many volunteer groups and non-profit organizations here in Fort Bend County. But we know they can’t do it alone!” You don’t have to look far to see Classic Chevy Sugar Land working to make our little piece of the world a better place. And the Classic Chevy Sugar Land Chili Cook-off is in its ninth year and counting. Jeff says, “All those years ago, this chili cook-off was created to benefit the Sugar Land Police Officers’ Association. Thanks to the support of all of you, the cook-off now benefits the entire community of law enforcement and fire protection here in our community!” Of course, a community presence this strong comes with a firm commitment to that same community. “You’re never just a customer or a sale here at Classic Chevy Sugar Land,” says owner Tiffany Sebastian. “You’re our neighbor and that’s how you’re treated. When we say, ‘Relax and Enjoy the Difference,’ we mean it. Our salespeople are empowered to make decisions and help you get what you’re looking for. We don’t have unseen managers lurking behind closed doors. We do not employ high pressure sales tactics. Our staff is equipped with the training and tools to make your car buying experience enjoyable. We are loyal to the community we serve. If you have any questions at all, you just have to ask!” Classic Chevy Business Development and Community Relations Manager Ray Aguilar adds, “I’ve been at Classic Chevy Sugar Land seven years. The culture here keeps getting warmer and the Classic family’s getting stronger. We’re truly your neighbors and every member of our team will look you in the eye with a firm handshake.”

You can drop in to Classic Chevy Sugar Land anytime and meet the team. And keep your calendar open for the Classic Chevy Sugar Land Chili Cookoff and Baking Contest coming to you this fall on October 19, 2019. Operations Director Jerry Parks says, “Classic Chevy Sugar Land invites everyone to the chili cook-off, including business owners, clubs, families, individuals etc., to join in this effort to support and honor our local heroes. Look for more information very soon!” Chillax… and enjoy the difference!!

A Clean and Pristine Garage Floor

that Lasts for Decades

I

s your garage floor spotted with oil stains? Have you tried a DIY epoxy and become frustrated by the cracking and peeling? What if there was a solution covered by a warranty for more than 20 years? Meet Glenn Taylor and Matt Williams, owners of local Garage Kings. “What we do,” says Glenn, “is apply a polyaspartic flooring in your garage. It’s breathable, bendable, flexible and durable. It won’t stain, crack, peel, become discolored or show tire marks. Polyaspartic flooring is about the thickness of a credit card once applied. It’s easy to clean and has superior anti-slip traction. You might say it’s overkill for a garage. But with a 21-year adhesion warranty, your garage floor (or maybe man cave!) will look clean and pristine for a very long time.” When you choose to finish your garage floor with Garage Kings, your consultation is free and your quoted price is all-inclusive. Matt says, “With a 21-year warranty, everything has to be done perfectly. At your consultation, we do a moisture test to ensure polyaspartic is right for your floor. We also

do a concrete scratch test to make sure we bring the right tools to do your job. We measure and quote a price that includes leveling of any uneven areas, stain removal and crack repair. Most jobs only take a day to complete, and by the end of that day you can walk on it. Seventy-two hours later, you can drive on it.” Glenn and Matt are both long time residents of Fort Bend County. Friends for more than 20 years, Matt works with Fort Bend County EMS as a paramedic and Glenn is a firefighter/paramedic with Missouri City Fire Department. Matt says, “We offer opportunities for other first responders and encourage hiring veterans here at Garage Kings. These are trustworthy individuals that have been vetted and background checked.” Glenn’s son Garrett will be joining the Garage Kings ranks later this year after he completes his service with the United States Navy. In addition to garage floors, polyaspartic flooring is perfect for around the pool, patios, commercial kitchens, airplane hangars and fire departments. “The sky’s the limit,” says Glenn. “Give us a call to schedule your free consultation and we’ll go from there!”

riginally from Lubbock, Wanda Balle moved to the Houston area in the late ‘70s where she began her career as an analyst for what is now ConocoPhillips. She enjoyed her time with ConocoPhillips; moving several times with the company before returning to the Houston area and settling in Richmond. Wanda retired in October 2016, and she still gets together with friends from ConocoPhillips at least once a month. Even before she retired, Wanda knew she needed to do something about her varicose veins. According to Wanda, “Swollen, puffy veins run in my family. My grandmother, my mother and my sister have all dealt with varicose veins. When my veins began to bulge and look unsightly, I just quit wearing skirts or shorts. I wore long pants and it was business as usual. Later, I started to notice that my legs would get itchy and sore at night. The pain would come and go and sometimes my legs would swell.” Before she sought help, Wanda asked her dermatologist and her OB/GYN who they would recommend treat her varicose veins. They both (independently) recommended Dr. Ulises Baltazar. Dr. Ulises Baltazar is a highly regarded vein specialist. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting from issues of the circulatory system and is a leader in his field. Board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery, Dr. Baltazar is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. Wanda followed both doctors’ advice. She says, “I am very happy I went to see Dr. Baltazar. I was nervous and he put me at ease from the very beginning. Dr. Baltazar explains things in a way that is calming and easy to understand. He is such a personable doctor and very down to earth. Dr. Baltazar told me it was an easy procedure...and it was. I had a couple of stitches, no bleeding and very little pain. He and his entire staff are fabulous. They are super friendly to everyone and always on time.” After her one year follow up, Wanda reports, “I have no bulging veins or leg pain, and I’m wearing dresses and shorts now. I haven’t done that in years! I even wore a dress to my 50th high school reunion.” Wanda says she would recommend Dr. Baltazar to men or women. If swollen, puffy veins are causing discomfort or making you rethink your summer wardrobe, call Dr. Baltazar for a consultation today.

TEAM SPIRIT TASTES GREAT! At Keeper’s, the genuine care and satisfaction of our guests is our highest purpose. by Amy Sharp

n April 27th, Keeper’s Japanese Restaurant & Bar marked its 8th anniversary right here in Sugar Land. Coincidentally, owner Keeper Lin celebrated his birthday the same day! “I immigrated to the United States from Taiwan in 1987,” reflects Keeper. “Things are much better here. I enjoy the freedom. I’m proud of my team here at Keeper’s and our American spirit. Everyone works hard and let’s me know when they need help. I give them a lot of responsibility, and they give me a nice performance. It’s not necessary that everyone be a hero. But as a team...we are one hero.” For you, the expectation at Keeper’s is simple: a well-trained staff and reasonably priced food that’s of the highest quality. What this means is...Keeper doesn’t just call in orders to his fish suppliers. Each day, Keeper or his head chef personally visit the suppliers and watch as the fish are cut. They select only the best. On the day we spoke, Keeper had hand-selected tuna, sea urchin, salmon and yellowtail. When the case of yellowtail was delivered, Keeper decided to return it. He says, “The yellowtail arrived too warm. We can’t sell that. Everything here must be very fresh and very safe.” The newest menu items at Keeper’s include the Titan Roll—a cajun-style cooked roll featuring avocado, calamari and crawfish; Tuna Tower—sashimi-grade tuna, avocado, seaweed salad and dynamite sauce served with tortilla chips (opt for Christmas style by topping with crab meat!); and Twin Tuna—spicy tuna surrounded by blackened tuna. Under the direction of new bar manager James Shearn, Keeper’s has a revised wine list and new cocktails on the menu. And the restaurant itself is also undergoing a facelift with new pendants, and new chairs and booths arriving this summer. Before Keeper’s Japanese Restaurant & Bar, Keeper owned two Houston-area sushi restaurants including Kaneyama, a Marvin Zindler two-time Blue Ribbon winner. “Here in Sugar Land,” says Keeper, “my focus has always been my cus-

tomers. I’ve lived here since 1995, and I’m raising my family here. I know how much money goes into the kids with violin, dance, swimming etc. My goal will always be high quality food at reasonable prices.” You can catch Keeper’s son Vincent managing the restaurant on Wednesdays. Vincent and his brother Ronny are students at U of H, and Keeper’s daughter Molly will be a senior at Clements High School next school year. Chris and Charles are four and one, and Keeper and his wife Bell are expecting a little girl in October! Every month, Keeper donates to a different community organization as part of his “Fort Bend Cares’ initiative. Recent recipients include Dulles and Elkins high schools and Austin Parkway Elementary. ike Treadway has known Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. for nearly forty years. “Dr. Lomonte was my neighbor across the street,” says Mike. “We both love the outdoors, so we really hit it off hunting and fishing together. Our kids are also roughly the same age and played together.” “Back when Dr. Lomonte opened his dental practice. I remember telling him I would wait until he got good at it before coming in. He told me, ‘Come on in, I’ll cheat you right!’ We would laugh and laugh. But in all seriousness, he’s been my dentist for around 34 years and he is excellent. His prices are fair and reasonable. My problem is that I love sugar, and I use it to keep going when I’m tired. My long work hours demand it. So I’ve given Dr. Lomonte a fair amount of business...a chance to try out all of his techniques. You name it, I’ve had it. Crowns, root canals, even a couple of dental implants. All have been good experiences, and the work has held up extremely well. Just a very nice job.” Mike is the owner of MTA Mike Treadway Architects, Inc., a national full-service architectural firm producing work for public, institutional, commercial, and development clients. Projects include commercial retail, restaurants, entertainment venues, hotels and malls. The Boardwalk Bullet on Kemah Boardwalk was designed by Mike’s firm and is one of the most compact wooden roller coasters in the world. Dr. Lomonte has been practicing at his same location on Murphy Road since 1982. He counts Mike among his first and longest running patients. “We are both jokesters for sure,” says Dr. Lomonte. “But it’s people like Mike that made this practice successful. They had faith in the beginning, and then found the value in high quality dentistry. My staff and I take great pride in both making sure you are comfortThomas M. hat’s better than Mexican food made from scratch? Not much! At Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant, a beloved Sugar Land staple for almost sixteen years, they serve it up so fresh, hot, and delicious, you’ll swear you’re eating south of the border. “We are proud and honored to share our food with the Sugar Land community,” says Jaime Garcia, who owns and operates Lupita’s along with his wife Lupe and their family. “Everything we do, we do with love.” With Father’s Day coming up, why not treat your “king of the house” to one of Lupita’s scrumptious margaritas...now only $3 every day, all day, indefinitely! And on Mondays and Tuesdays during lunch, a side of chile con queso is on the house. “We have longtime customers who come in just for our homemade corn and flour tortillas, which are soft, warm, and served right from our kitchen to your table,” says Jaime. “Our savory meat marinade is from a recipe that’s been passed down through the generations. Everything we do is made to order, fresh and delicious.” That includes the stuffed avocados, which are loaded with shrimp,

Fajitas that are so tender and delectably seasoned, your fork just sinks into them. And Chile Rellenos consisting of a roasted poblano pepper stuffed with meat and cheese. “All of this is possible because of our staff, including our two main cooks: Maria Lourdes and Sandra Alvarez,” explains Jaime. “Maria has been with us since the beginning, and Sandra has been with us for twelve years. They’re the reason we have lines out the door.” Deliciousness aside, your “king of the house” will love visiting Lupita’s because all Astros games are shown on the restaurant’s flat-screens. “We’re Houstonproud around here,” says Jaime. “Go, ‘Stros!” “A big thank you to all of our wonderful regulars and our new customers that have shared meals with us. THE ONE TO SEE

FRIENDSHIP DECADESOFSUPPORT AND

by Amy Sharp

ocal Finish Line Sports owner Andy Stewart can’t remember a time when Dr. Tom Arnold, owner of Today’s Vision Sugar Land, wasn’t his optometrist. “Dr. Arnold and I met through local running club Fort Bend Fit,” says Andy. “That had to be in the late 80s or early 90s. He became a customer at Finish Line Sports, and he’s been my family’s eye doctor ever since.” “He’s what you want in every doctor,” continues Andy. “Dr. Arnold is always enthusiastic and caring. Just a warm person that’s friendly and makes you feel at ease. He’s the one that discovered my cataracts and took care of them. My wife, Jean Leach-Stewart, is also a patient. And our daughter, Caitlin Leach, has grown up with Dr. Arnold. He’s been with her through many eye care changes and fitted her in contacts. She’s always been very comfortable with Dr. Arnold.” “Dr. Arnold is also a friend. When Jean and I were planning our wedding in Santa Fe, Dr. Arnold filled me in on what we needed to see and do since he once lived there. I also

love that Dr. Arnold is a devoted family guy. He often visits his daughter and grandkids in Scotland. When he’s gone, I’ve seen the other optometrists at Today’s Vision Sugar Land. He has a really good staff. Everyone there is great, very helpful. It’s Dr. Arnold that creates this atmosphere. He’s the star of this show.” Today’s Vision Sugar Land and Finish Line Sports are both tenured Sugar Land establishments. Dr. Arnold opened Today’s Vision Sugar Land back in 1982 in the brand new (at the time!) retail center at Williams Trace and 59. Andy established Finish Line Sports in 1985 near the entrance to Sugar Creek. Both are still operating in their original locations. Andy says, “We are celebrating our 34th year at Finish Line Sports this month. We love to take care of our local swim teams and runners. We host three races a year: the St. Paddy’s Day Half Marathon, Fort Bend KIA 30K, and the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot (Sugar Land’s largest local fun run). We also have our popular kids running camps coming up in July.” “At Finish Line Sports, I can only recommend

shoes, clothing and socks that I like for myself. I like being able to personally endorse the products. It’s the same with Dr. Arnold. I’m extremely comfortable recommending him because he has taken care of my entire family for years. I know he will take care of everyone I send his way. He’s a runner, and runners take care of themselves. It’s an attitude that naturally means they also take care of others!” For more information about Finish Line Sports, visit www.slfinishlinesports.com.

Dads Always

“O

f all the titles I’ve been lucky enough to earn, ‘Dad’ is the one that means the most,” says Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter of Alan’s Plumbing. “When my boys were little, being a dad mostly meant keeping them housed, fed, and out of trouble. But even now that they’re grown, I have never stopped being their dad. All three of my boys—Jake, Luke and Beau— work with me at Alan’s Plumbing. Luke is a master plumber like me and my brother Chris Burkhalter. Beau is journeyman licensed, soon to become a master plumber. Jake is an apprentice who is studying hard for his additional licenses. I couldn’t be more proud.” Alan is happy to report that the Burkhalter family is expanding! “My wife Jennifer, who runs the office, will be the first to tell you how much fun grandparenting is,” says Alan. “Luke and his beautiful wife Chelsea gave us a new addition recently, little Wyatt, who is the light of our lives. And Beau just married his sweetheart Courtney, who is a local fourth grade teacher. And our family doesn’t stop there.” “You’re our family, too. It’s that simple. When we come to your house to install a water heater, a filtration system, or to fix your plumbing problems, we give you all the consideration and service we would lavish on any member of our family. We love Fort Bend and everyone who lives here. Our kids grew up with your kids. As parents, we coached sports teams together, side-by-side. And we’re on the same team now, which is why you will always get the very best of everything from us—transparent pricing, prompt, clean service, and a job done right the first time. We aren’t here to upsell you or maximize profits. We’re here to make sure your house is as safe and secure for your family as you need it to be. That’s the Alan’s Plumbing guarantee.” Fun fact! There are other Alan’s Plumbing family members (and their surnames aren’t Burkhalter!) that are just as essential: journeyman-licensed Jeff Johnson, and apprentices Jaime,

Trevor and Christian. “There’s something very satisfying about going to a house, identifying the problem, and then finding the right solution to fix it,” says Alan. “It’s why we love what we do. My boys have been riding in the truck with me since they were eight or nine years old. As a family-owned and operated business, we can afford to keep our overhead low so we can pass that savings on to you. We aren’t a big nameless, heartless corporation that only answers to its shareholders. We are a Fort Bend family that answers to you.” As Father’s Day approaches, see for yourself what a difference family makes. Give Alan’s Plumbing a call. She does great work at a reasonable fee. Some just can’t afford the often high cost of an attorney, but I find Margie’s fees completely reasonable. I’ve also referred a probate case to her, and I’ve seen how she really fights for her clients...which I like!” Margie says, “It’s funny Raleigh mentioned probate, because that is one of the things we are trying to avoid with estate planning. What an estate plan does is provide clarity about each heir to your estate. With a plan in place, you and your heirs will likely pay substantially less in taxes, fees and court costs and avoid nasty family battles over your assets after you are gone. If you are in a situation where you need help with probate, I’m here for you. But I encourage everyone to take Raleigh’s advice and make sure your financial house is in order now.” Both Margie and Raleigh are active members of our community. Serving Our Community and Residents with Professionalism

J

by Amy Sharp

ack Molho is the Executive Director of First Colony Community Service Association (FCCSA). Part of his job is to promote and maintain First Colony as a notable and premier community. So when pest control contracts for First Colony were up for renewal, Jack asked the company he uses and recommends to enter a bid. “More than ten years ago,” explains Jack, “I was frustrated with the ‘big’ pest control company I was using at my home. They were spraying willy-nilly, the rates were ridiculous, and they were constantly trying to upsell. My in-laws recommended I give John Onofrey, the owner of BUGCO Pest Control, a call. John is a former Marine and he demands that his team treat customers right. I’ve utilized BUGCO at my residence ever since. These crews are respectful and always communicate...confirming appointments and ensuring the time is convenient. When I expressed concern about my grandchild rolling all over the floor, they suggested alternatives to what and where they spray. They’re always super-friendly, very attentive and thorough. Their rates are competitive. I was a real estate broker in a previous life. I always provided my clients with three referrals for pest control, including BUGCO Pest Control. But then I always added that I personally use BUGCO!” Today, BUGCO Pest Control is under contract for pest control at all First Colony facilities, parks and offices. Jack says, “The professionalism of this company is excellent. They always knock before entering an office. When areas need special

attention, they are very responsive and cognizant of special situations. This is an outstanding team. Legendary Lineage by Amy Sharp

El Tiempo Cantina’s Executive Chef Domenic Laurenzo’s family has been

in food service for more than 40 years. His grandmother, Ninfa Laurenzo, was the founder and namesake of the famous Ninfa’s restaurant. “My grandmother grew up in Harlingen. She met my grandfather, Italian-born Domenic Thomas Laurenzo, while visiting Providence, RI. They literally flipped a coin to decide if they would live in Texas or Rhode Island.” And with luck on Mama Ninfa’s side, the Laurenzo family would begin their legendary journey. In 1959, the couple opened the Rio Grande Tortilla Factory in Houston’s Second Ward. But this love story is marred in tragedy. In 1969, Domenic’s grandfather died suddenly. “My grandmother had five children she needed to support. In 1973, she converted the tortilla factory to a five table restaurant...the place that today is known as the Original Ninfa’s on Navigation.” By their third year, sheer word of mouth made Ninfa’s a popular downtown spot. Mama Ninfa’s concept continued to grow throughout the eighties, the era when “Tex Mex” was born. In fact, Mama Ninfa is credited for introducing the word “fajita” into American culinary lexicon! El Tiempo Cantina found its way to Houston in 1998 when Mama Ninfa’s oldest grandson Domenic and her son Roland opened the original location on Richmond. (By this time, the Laurenzo family was no longer involved in the Ninfa’s enterprise.) Domenic says, “We credit the name, El Tiempo, to my cousin Antonio Martinez from Monterrey. My Dad was visiting Mexico, securing items for our new restaurant’s atmosphere. In an amazing Act of God, Antonio said we should call it El Tiempo. It means ‘The Time.’ And time is of the essence... the frame of reference for every human being. At El Tiempo, portraits of my family members, including my grandmother, line the walls in a tribute to our history and culture. We invite you to our home to truly pass the time...reminisce about the past, enjoy the present, plan your future.” El Tiempo Cantina is opening their 9th location in Stafford. When you walk through the doors, you’re immediately taken to a “time” of relaxation and great food—all made from scratch with the best ingredients available. “Eating is one of the joys of life,” says Domenic. “There’s

no way we would do that half-heartedly.” And from the Mixed Grill—a bit of everything cooked on a wood burning mesquite grill—to the famous El Tiempo margarita, Domenic has created delicious combinations that area Tex Mex lovers can’t get enough of. “We’re constantly working on the food, coming up with new and innovative ideas that we know you’ll love!” Ready to pass the time with family and friends while enjoying authentic Tex Mex straight from the lineage of Mama Ninfa? Your Neighborhood, Family-Friendly Hangout by Amy Sharp

ack when it was an ice house, Scott and Dina Mueller frequently visited The Old Trading Post in Booth, TX. “This place has a lot of history,” says Dina. “The land was granted to the Booth family by Stephen F. Austin in the 1800s. Ms. Agnes Booth served BBQ plates and hosted entertainment out here in the late 1940s. As it’s evolved, it’s grown to include a big stage and a great kitchen. Scott and I love this place. We were all sad when it closed several years ago.” Last year, Dina and Scott reopened this landmark hotspot as “Scotty’s Saloon” at the OTP. With some remodeling, it’s now a shabby chic, family-friendly hangout. “We’ve created a place where you can bring

the kids, feel safe, and enjoy a nice day or evening outdoors,” says Dina. “We have entertainment every weekend—live music, dueling pianos or karaoke on our stage, sporting event watch parties on our 200 inch screen, or we show legendary concerts like the 1981 Journey concert and the 1984 Selena concert from the Astrodome. It’s a front row seat to a concert you may have missed. We have lots of yard games, including cornhole and washer toss. On Saturdays, we keep it kid-friendly until about 9pm...then move toward more adult entertainment.” The kitchen here cooks up everything from scratch: handmade burgers, chicken sliders, wings, chicken fingers, catfish sandwiches, and street and fish tacos are among the favorites. Every Thursday is “Chicken Fried Ribeye Night.” Scott says, “I pick up the ribeye from the meat market and cut it myself. We only make about 50 steaks...

when they’re gone, they’re gone.” The full bar includes six draft beers on tap and Scotty’s Signature Bloody Mary—a cajun Bloody Mary complete with Scotty’s crawfish. When you hear the nearby train, the bartender will ring the “Train Shot” bell and it’s $2 special shots for the next two minutes! Open Thursday through Sunday, we invite you to bring the kids, relax and enjoy the food and atmosphere at Scotty’s Saloon. Have an entertainment idea? Suggest it! Scott and Dina will make it happen if they can. To view upcoming entertainment acts, like “Scotty’s Saloon at OTP” on Facebook.

t’s a rule of business that if you aren’t taking care of your customer, your competitor will. And no one takes that “service first” mentality more seriously than Brian Jackson of Jackson Air and Heat. Back in 1982, Brian’s dad, Johnny Jackson, built Jackson Air and Heat with quality and reliability as its cornerstone. “He was truly visionary, and saw early on the need for an honest, trustworthy air conditioning company in a growing metropolis like Sugar Land.” Today, Brian Jackson continues his father’s honorable business tradition. As the oldest Trane dealer in Sugar Land, Jackson Air and Heat has been repairing and installing air conditioners for over thirty years. “My dad moved here from Oklahoma back in 1976,” says Brian. “As one of eleven children, he was determined to make his mark. ou’ve probably heard the term “Exchange Club.” But have you ever wondered what they do? We sat down with Exchange Club of Sugar Land President David Lanagan and member Paul Barnett to learn more about this wonderful organization. “It’s all about the kids,” says David. “The first Exchange Club was started more than 100 years ago by Charles Berkey in Detroit. His idea was that business people could join forces to ‘exchange’ ideas about what the members might accomplish with their collective talents and mutual interests to improve life for their community’s children and people. Here at the local level, we sponsor events, raise money, and volunteer to support other area organizations committed to the prevention of child abuse.” The Exchange Club of Sugar Land just wrapped their largest fundraiser: the annual Classic Chevy Sugar Land Spaghetti Dinner. Paul says, “We raised enough money at the dinner to give away about $100,000 next year. And the beautiful thing is...even though Exchange Club is a national organization, this money stays local. We have a calendar full of people and organizations to help throughout the year, and all of them are right here at home. It’s a magnificent thing to be a part of, knowing we are making a difference and working to make the world a better place.” Exchange Club of Sugar Land is the morning club,

meeting every Wednesday at 7am at Sweetwater Country Club. David says, “You’re invited! The first three times you visit, we’ll buy your breakfast. You can see how irresistible it is to join with people who are outraged that child abuse exists and want to do something about it. And it’s ok, we know that no one can do everything, but everyone can do something. That’s why we do this together. We’ll see you at breakfast!” Exchange Club of Sugar Land programs:

ratton Pools & Outdoor Living—our local custom pool builder with an unmatched reputation for quality and reliability— is growing! Owners Michael and Kryshon Bratton say, “As we further expand into complete outdoor living, we are thrilled to bring Brent Appelt on board as an equity owner.” Michael and Kryshon have been wanting to expand the outdoor living elements of Bratton Pools. With the addition of Brent, it’s official. Everything to do with the outdoors is in the scope of what they do: pools, covered patios, outdoor kitchens, pergolas, fire pits, etc. “We want to create the backyard of your dreams,” says Michael. “This is full service backyard design and construction. What we do requires great attention to fine detail. Measurements, tolerances, schematics and blueprints must be accurate, and we are excited because Brent brings additional experience to our table. We now have two owners that can actively manage multiple projects. As the saying goes, ‘Two heads are better than one!’” So you’re ready for a new backyard. How does it work? “We come out to your home, take a look at your space, and get a feel for what you are wanting,” says Michael. “Then we come up with 3D plans where you can really see your ideas come to life. In addition to a pool, outdoor kitchen and/or any structure you can imagine, landscaping can also be included in your package. We work with several landscape architects to incorporate landscaping into our

pool and outdoor living designs. We can even wrap the cost of landscaping into your contract so your loan covers the entire backyard. We are very hands-on and supervise the process directly every step of the way.” Of course, custom pool work has long been Bratton Pools & Outdoor Living’s bread and butter...and that’s not changing. “A big part of our business,” explains Michael, “is total pool makeovers. We renovate pools—including decking, plaster, edging and equipment—bringing them up to date. I’ve been working around pools since 1989, so my experience really comes into play here. And after we’re done...most people think it looks like a brand new installation.” Michael, Kryshon and Brent all grew up right here in Fort Bend County. hat’s what Houston Press called Hickory Barn Bar-B-Q. This legacy is three generations in the making. The six Kiddy brothers moved to Texas from Mississippi with great BBQ in mind. They opened their first restaurant together back in 1953. Then each branched out on their own. It was James that opened the original Hickory Barn on Wilcrest in 1979. Then his son Joel ran the operation. Today,

Joel’s son Michael is excited to announce a second Hickory Barn location right off FM359 near Pecan Grove! “I’m passionate about Hickory Barn,” says Michael. “And I’m very excited that my cousin Ben Jr. is helping out at the new location. Like my grandfather, his dad was one of the original six Kiddy brothers. As a nod to our roots, a mural on the outside wall of the restaurant will feature the six brothers

on horseback. I’m honored to keep this legacy alive for my own children.” The Hickory Barn menu features the smoked meats Texans know and love...brisket, ribs, chicken, pork, sausage and turkey all smoked on-site in two huge smokers. Enjoy a basket with a choice of homemade sides, put it on a sandwich or baked potato, or take it home by the pound. Over the years, the menu has expanded to include more homemade selections like chicken fried steak and catfish. Dine at lunchtime and every special is just $7.99 including a drink. “We have a little bit of everything,” says Michael. “And our newest menu items include broccoli salad and banana pudding...both made from scratch, of course!” Hickory Barn’s online ordering system allows you to easily pick up dinner at the drive through window. Catering is also available. Weekends bring live music to Hickory Barn’s patio. This family-oriented restaurant would love to host a spirit night for your school or organization. “I’m grateful for the many great years my family has enjoyed in this community,” says Michael. “I want to give back as much as I possibly can!” Hickory Barn Bar-B-Q 832-759-5435 1836 Farm to Market 359 Richmond, TX 77406

Back in the Game

immie Hermes has enjoyed sports all his life. He played baseball in high school and college, then he switched to flag football and softball after graduating. He continued to play flag football until he was 40 and softball into his fifties. Somewhere along the way, golf became the sport of choice. Jimmie admits his active life was not without its bumps and bruises. He had to have neck surgery at the age of 50, and he has been bothered by pain in his left shoulder for more than 10 years. Jimmie’s shoulder pain became more troublesome after a major surgery last year. The pain was so intense he couldn’t sleep at night. His doctor diagnosed him with arthritis in his left shoulder and gave him a cortisone shot. He told Jimmie that once the shot wore off, he would probably need to have a shoulder replacement. In November, the pain returned and so did his sleepless nights. By January, Jimmie was back to taking one to two Aleve or six to eight ibuprofen a day, and his lower back started to bother him. Between the lack of sleep and the pain, Jimmie’s golf game was starting to suffer; that’s when he made his first appointment to see Dr. Steve Harris. Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982 and has been in practice for over 40 years. Known for using new technology and techniques that complement his safe and holistic approach, Dr. Harris offers effective, gentle chiropractic care. Through his years as a chiropractor, Dr. Harris has developed his own methods and treatments for every layer of the spinal problem to get results. His natural, gentle approach promotes relief from pain by treating the causes. “Dr. Harris is easy to talk to and understand. He and his staff are awesome. They make you feel like family,” says Jimmie. “The pain in my left shoulder was down by 90% the first week. By my 5th visit, I was totally off any kind of pain medicine.” In March, Jimmie was able to travel to Mississippi for a Pro-Am golf tournament that he’s com-

peted in for the past seven years. He says, “I golfed for three straight days. I was a little stiff and sore, but it went away this time. I’m thrilled that I can continue doing what I enjoy.”
