Where the Customer

Always is Right

Ameristar Roofing and Restoration has been busy since the March 15th hail storm. “We’re repairing and replacing a lot of Sugar Land roofs right now,” says Reuben Stafford, owner of the Richmond-based company. “I teach my employees that the customer is always right. Eighteen years of roofing and restoration experience has taught me that.”

Reuben grew up in Richmond and still lives there today. His six-year-old daughter Koa has been his little helper for years. Within the next year, their family will grow by a third. “I’m engaged to be married! We are so excited to welcome my fiancee, Sabra, into our family.”

Ameristar started in 2008 when Reuben was working in Kansas City as a roofer. “Being from Richmond, when Ike hit, I received a lot of calls asking for help. It made sense for me to come home… and the business kept me here.”

Though Ameristar has three locations – in Kansas City, Houma, Louisiana, and right here in Richmond – Reuben stays close to home most of the time. “In Fort Bend County, we do a lot of re-roofs… the homes are just getting to the age where that’s necessary. The homeowners need to be comfortable that you have a good solution to their problems,” he says. “But we do more than roofing. We’ve even built custom homes and our commercial side is growing – we’re currently redoing a large hospital roof in Louisiana. We can do big jobs, but we love handing individual jobs on a daily basis.”

One of the tenets of Reuben’s business is Quality Control. “I have two inspectors on staff. Within a week of completing a job, the inspector makes sure we completed the job more than perfectly,” he explains. “That’s what sets us apart. We get a lot of refer rals by ensuring every job is completed fully and perfectly. Just remember economical way isn’t always the best.”

Employee longevity is another important subject for Reuben. “All of my sales staff, except one, has been with me for more than 10 years – and that one has been with us four years,” Reuben explains. “I don’t have to hire much on the sales side.”

Fully insured and licensed, Ameristar Roofing and Restoration is fully certified by the manufacturers of the products they install. This means you not only get warranty coverage from Ameristar Roofing and Restoration, but you also get addi tional warranty coverage from the manufacturer.

Ameristar also has a big service area. “Drop a pin within 100 miles around Houston, and we go there!” he says. “As a whole we’re a happy company with happy employees, and that shows in our workmanship.”

Take Advantage of the for your Internet Service

Here’s a fun fact you can actually use: The speed of light is approximately 186,282 miles per second. So, if you want faster internet service, take note.

“Fiber internet uses thin strands of glass to transmit data via light signals,” says Ezee Fiber’s EVP of Customer Operations Pedro Checo. “Fiber is much faster than the traditional metal wired-based methods like copper used in older telephone lines and cable systems.”

And it’s now available in Northeast Fort Bend County.

According to Pedro, some areas around Sugar Land have only had traditional internet options for years. There is a general lack of fiber infrastructure, but Ezee Fiber is changing that, starting in areas that have been neglected by other internet providers along Hwy. 99 and progressing through Richmond, Sugar Land, and Missouri City. By the end of Q3 2024, more than 50,000 homes will have access to Ezee Fiber internet that’s buried underground.

Ezee Fiber, based in Houston, has been supplying fiber solutions for Texas businesses for 30 years to provide emergency services, government facilities, school districts, and medical facilities with faster, more reliable internet service and is extending this premium service to residential homes.

But it’s not just about blazingly fast internet speeds; it’s also about affordability.

“Ezee Fiber is changing the way data is priced,” Pedro adds. “We offer premium multi-gig fiber internet at incredible prices. No gimmicks. No hidden fees. And we offer ‘price for life,’ which is a very unique value proposition.”

Because residential customers have varying needs, Ezee Fiber offers 1Gig, 2Gig, 5Gig, and 8Gig plans with transparent, contract-free pricing that is locked in for life.

“We’ve created a very customer-centric environment,” Pedro continues. “We are all in with our customers, our community and our employees.”

Speed of Light

Communities have recognized the benefit of what Ezee Fiber is providing and how the company is changing the way people look at the internet. By the numbers, Ezee Fiber is growing fast, servicing hundreds of communities and employing 240 team members to care for their growing customer base. More than 2,000 Google reviews have chalked up a 4.8 score for this creative fiber internet enterprise.

Fun facts matter, and this can work to your advantage.

DISTINCTIVELY DIFFERENT PROPERTIES in Fort Bend County

Mark Millis has history here. His companies have been acquiring, developing, constructing, and managing real estate projects for more than 30 years. “We started our first development, Shiloh Lakes Estates, here in Fort Bend County in 1994,” Mark says. “An exclusive project currently underway is our 52-home community of Royal Lakes Manor, Section II, with its private gated entry, three lakes, oversized lots, and custom homes. After developing the community, Bethany Homes, our home division, began building customdesigned, luxury homes in this community.”

The Millis Group has grown to be a respected real estate developer offering unique and uncommon projects. “We’ve developed a lot of prominent communities, such as Sovereign Shores Estates and The Retreat at Sovereign Shores, both in Richmond. We develop lots and then build homes and office buildings to meet our clients’ demands.”

After meeting at another company, Mark and his wife, Laura, married in 1990. “We found each other, and I had an 11-year-old son and she had a 10-year-old daughter,” Mark says. “We had very similar backgrounds. We blended our family, which then grew by two daughters. Our four grandchildren – two boys and two girls – all still live nearby.”

Laura currently contributes most of her time to The Millis Group’s Bethany Homes. “Laura is a fantastic interior designer too,” Mark says.

You’ll find the Millis Group’s headquarters in a very unique location – on the grounds of the Sugar Land Regional Airport. “Aviation is my passion… I have an airplane and a helicopter. We purchased an existing building at the Sugar Land Regional Airport and then modified it to meet our corporate and aviation needs,” Mark says.

The Millis Group also has a commercial side, which developed the office park in front of the Greatwood community. “We’ve finished 11 buildings and are about to begin construction on the 12th. That will finish out section I,” Mark explains.

“We’re always looking for unique opportunities,” Mark concludes. “We develop distinctively different properties in pristine locations.”

The Dry Eye Guy

Is a Hormone Imbalance Causing Your Dry Eye and Other Symptoms?

“There are several components to dry eye disease, often resulting in gaps in comprehensive care. Underlying conditions can play a significant role,” says Dr. Faheem Inayatali, founder of local Dry Eye & Wellness Center. “When we’re able to address underlying conditions and tackle inflammation, the success rate for dry eye treatments escalates to 94%.”

How do Dr. Faheem and his team measure, and subsequently treat, those underlying conditions?

“I’ve had a chance to explore the eye care provider community around the world, and commonly dry eye disease is treated with artificial tears or medicated eye drops. But most patients with moderate to severe disease need advanced treatments,” explains Dr. Faheem. “Our goal is to unravel connections that haven’t been discovered. I have visited Japan, Turkey, Australia, and other countries to converse with their top eye care specialists. This has given me a unique perspective and an opportunity to apply best practices to all of my treatment plans.”

“Hormone therapy, when applicable, helps to dampen inflammatory markers, offering another level of treatment,” he adds. After identifying an imbalance, our team uses bioidentical hormone therapy – pellets inserted just under the skin that last up to six months – to regulate hormone levels. It’s a simple in-office procedure. We monitor blood work every three months and see

phenomenal results in our patients.”

Unless you have a related chief complaint, your primary care doctor does not routinely check hormone levels. “We know that males and females lose 1-2% of their testosterone per year after the age of 30 and reference ranges are antiquated, so it’s important to get your biomarkers checked and analyzed by a specialized healthcare professional,” Dr. Faheem notes.

Hormone replacement therapy is great for fat reduction and may reduce a patient’s risk of heart attack, stroke, and dementia. “The number one correlation between great health and old age is muscle mass integrity. And hormone therapy helps retain that necessary muscle mass,” Dr. Faheem adds. Symptoms of hormone imbalance include mood swings, inflammation, low energy, weight gain, muscle loss, anxiousness, trouble sleeping, depression, and more. “With hormone therapy treatments, a qualified candidate can see a dramatic reduction in the severity of these symptoms,” Dr. Faheem explains.

“I believe in the importance of optimizing health and illuminating causes of disease rather than just treating symptoms. Screening and early detection is key,” Dr. Faheem concludes. “Book your complimentary consultation now.”

Removing the HASSLE from Real Estate Investment

“As a property owner, I learned that being an owner and landlord can cause a lot of headaches. You have to really love real estate to answer 2am phone calls,” says Dustin Chervenka, CEO and Co-Founder of Five Buffalo Capital, LLC.

“At one of our properties, the residents in an apartment were so focused on playing video games, they didn’t realize the pizza they’d put in the oven caught fire,” he says. “The neighbors kicked the door in as the fire department arrived… and the residents were still so involved with their video game, they didn’t hear the commotion.”

With their real estate fund, Dustin and his wife, Kristina, are giving investors the potential to earn profits from the real estate industry, without the hassle.

Dustin obtained a wealth of experience over his many years in property management. “We realized we were making institutions money, while managing billions of dollars in assets. We learned to finance, budget, renovate, and structure deals. We knew we could do this ourselves to help other people grow their wealth,” he says. “We want to help investors build generational wealth through investments that also enhance the communities impacted by the investment.”

After meeting at Oklahoma State University, the couple made many stops on their way to Houston. “We’ve been from Oklahoma to Phoenix to Dallas to Raleigh, so we’ve seen a lot of diversity in market sectors and people,” explains Dustin, who grew up in Edna, Texas. “But Texas is really home. I’ve been trying to get to Houston since we got married… and we settled here several years ago. The city has tons of entrepreneurs, diverse people, and delicious food. We love going to Astros games and are excited to see what the Texans do this year!”

Five Buffalo Capital is a 506(c) fund, restricted to Accredited Investors. “Although all investments have risks, it’s often easier to invest passively than to take on the responsibilities yourself,” Dustin explains. “This business comes natural to us. Kristina and I have almost 40 years of combined experience. We find multi-family properties in great locations in great school districts. Invest with us and let the professionals do it for you.”

DENTAL Health: Pro Tips for Parents

Serving and Protecting…Your Children’s Teeth

Jose Salinas and his wife Kia Rogers have been taking their 12-year-old son Dominic to Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental for almost a decade. Dominic’s five-year-old brother Damien recently started seeing Dr. Khan too. A police officer serving the public every day, Jose says he and Kia, a student, make time to take their boys to the dentist together.

“The boys love Dr. Khan – they’re always happy to be there. They don’t even mind waiting for their appointment because it is such a beautiful office,” Jose says. “In the waiting room, there are games and a movie theater, and when they go back to get their teeth cleaned, they lie on surfboards and watch a movie on the TV in the ceiling.”

Dr. Faisal M. Khan, DDS, of Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental, and his staff want to make chil dren’s dental experiences as stress-free as possible. “We strive to create a posi tive relationship with the patients so they are not as afraid of returning to dental care in the future. We also walk parents through every step of the process so there is no confusion,” says Dr. Khan. “We value healthy teeth at a young age to promote healthy growth for years to come.”

“The boys have had cavi-

ties filled and teeth pulled and never experienced pain,” Jose explains. “Dr. Khan is always very gentle with them. He takes his time with them.”

“We’ve also known Mary and the office staff for years,” he adds. “The whole staff is very nice, very professional, and very good with kids.”

Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental is located on Hwy 99 in Richmond, but is just a short drive from the Salinas-Rogers home in Katy. “I’ve referred Dr. Khan to co-workers, friends, and family. I have no reluctance in recommending him,” Jose says. “He’s very gentle with kids and makes it fun, while being very professional at the same time. He never forces any procedures. He always gives you several options to choose from.”

“The kids just love him,” Jose concludes. “And that’s the most important thing.”

One team One focus YOU Compounded Semaglutide and Tirzepatide

Board-certified family practice physician Jeffery T. Alford, MD, of Sweetwater Medical Associates, has practiced medicine here in Sugar Land for more than 30 years. And for more than a decade, Dr. Alford has turned to local Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy for customized medications for his patients, now including semaglutide and tirzepatide.

Dr. Alford says, “Semaglutide and tirzepatide are FDA-approved for diabetes and weight loss, and both are under investigation as treatments for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The beauty of having Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy compound the drugs for my patients is that I can customize the dose to fit the individual, and I have the flexibility to prescribe where deemed necessary. In many cases, the medication is also less expensive than its commercially available counterpart. Plus, there’s no wait. I’ve never had a patient wait to get their medication when working with Campbell’s.”

Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy was founded by Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm.D., R.Ph back in 2003. It’s known for custom-mixing medication formulas for adults, children, and even pets! “There are myriad reasons why one might want to have their medications custom made,” explains Dr. Campbell. “Maybe your medication is no longer available, or maybe it is, and it contains unwanted ingredients. Commercially manufactured medications commonly contain lactose, preservatives, dyes, gluten, sugar, and a variety of other non-active ingredients. A compounding pharmacist can create formulations without ingredients that may be problematic. As Dr. Alford mentioned, compounded medications are also created to the exact dosage required by the patient. You are never under-dosed or overdosed. And of course cost: It is often thought that having something custom-made to meet your needs is very expensive. This is not necessarily true. Many times, compounded medications can be cheaper than their commercially available alternative!”

Dr. Alford and the team at Sweetwater Medical Associates are devoted to internal medicine and family practice medicine. Dr. Alford says, “Compounded medications are one of the many fantastic tools we have in our toolbox to help people, and it’s exciting that we’re able to collaborate with Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy to compound semaglutide and tirzepatide.” To set up your consultation with Sweetwater Medical Associates, call 281-4944900 or visit www.sweetwatermed.com.

Smiles as Big as Texas

The Dental Expertise You Deserve

Very few people (famous and non-famous alike) are born with perfect teeth. Celebrities have perfect smiles because they have undergone cosmetic dentistry. Maybe your dislike of your smile stems from something physical, like a gap, crooked teeth, stained teeth, or an awkward bite. Perhaps people are having a less than positive reaction to you because of yellowed, tilted, protruding, or missing teeth in your smile. You don’t have to live with this situation.

When native Texan Dr. Thomas Lomonte opened his dental office in our area, his main goal was to not only provide world-class care for his patients, but also make the entire dental experience as pleasant as possible. Dr. Lomonte says, “I often have patients come to me who are afraid…because maybe they haven’t sat in a dental chair for twenty years. I love getting to know these patients, and showing them how stress-free modern dental care can be. No matter the procedure − whether you’re getting a root canal, some fantastic new advances in straightening like Invisalign, or even a cosmetic service like porcelain veneers − it’s virtually painless. When there’s nothing to stress out about, you can actually relax and maybe even have fun!”

Dr. Lomonte grew up in Beaumont. He received his undergraduate degree from Lamar University and his Doctorate in Dental Surgery from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston. His life’s work is ensuring Fort Bend families get absolutely everything they need in the same location while benefiting from friendly, state-of-the-art dentistry. It takes 13 hours to drive the 805 miles from the northernmost point of Texas to its southernmost point, and 11 hours to drive the 773 miles from east to west across Texas. In other words, Texas is huge. And right here in Fort Bend County, Dr. Lomonte is creating smiles as big as Texas!

Flooring is a Family Affair at Lone Star Floors

For Mohamed Naser, co-owner of Lone Star Floors, family is where it starts, in business and at home. “I’ve been married to my beautiful wife, Susan, since the early 90s,” he says. “We’re both immigrants and have similar views on family. Susan is Christian and I’m Muslim, but we fit together beautifully. Humans are humans.”

“We got married in Sugar Land and raised our five children here,” Mohamed continues. “My children graduated from Kempner, and currently my kids and eight grandchildren all live in one zip code. We’re a traditional family – my wife cooks all day on Fridays for family dinner.”

Mohamed also remains close with his family in business, with his cousins, Ziad Mukhaimer and Emad Mansour, as his co-owners of Lone Star Floors. With three locations throughout the Houston area, Mohamend often travels to all three stores. “I’m the joker. If someone is sick, I’ll go work on the floor. Just come find me…I’m the one with no hair!”

The cousins’ Sugar Land store is 12,000 square feet, and handles all flooring types, from carpet

to hardwood to laminate and tile. “We also do full kitchen and bathroom remodels, with access to subcontractors like electricians and plumbers,” Mohamed says. “It’s easier for our clients to deal with one company, without having to handle the subcontractors themselves.”

“The bottom line to our success is service,” he continues. “We offer great warranties for installations and manufacturer’s warranties for their products. We had a home in New Territory where the floors started squeaking after six months. The manufacturer’s warranty covered it and we replaced the floor. The homeowner couldn’t believe how quickly the replacement was completed.”

At Lone Star Floors, they treat their customers like family. “I had an elderly gentleman who reminded me of my own father, who passed away last year. He was so thankful for our service, he gave me a big hug,” Mohamed said. “I just treated him the same way I hoped people would treat my own dad.”

How Removing the “System” Enhanced the ER Experience

“People are often surprised to learn that St. Michael’s Elite Hospital is less expensive than the big hospitals,” says Dr. Shannon Orsak, founder and CMO of St. Michael’s. “Tests and treatments are more thorough and faster at a boutique hospital. And you don’t wait to see a doctor.”

How can a boutique hospital accomplish all of these things that big hospitals can’t?

“We removed ourselves from the ‘system,’” Dr. Orsak explains. “Back when I was working in a hospital, I had a tracking board 20 patients deep. As I released patients from my care, I kept watching the tracking board get shorter, not longer. At one point, I looked up and I had no patients. When I walked out to consult the intake person, I expected an empty waiting room, but found just the opposite. The waiting room was packed with people, but the intake person had neglected to check them in properly. There were empty beds, but since patients hadn’t been entered into the system, they were waiting miserably instead of being treated by a physician in a room. That’s the moment I decided we could do

better with a private emergency room.”

In 2007, Dr. Orsak ran with his idea: Create a place in his hometown where his neighbors could seek quality, emergency, medical care. A comfortable place where patrons would feel loved and didn’t have to wait hours to see a doctor. He likely didn’t know it at the time, but Dr. Orsak was a pioneer of the now common free-standing ER. In 2019, Dr. Orsak’s ER expanded and rebranded as St. Michael’s Elite Hospital, adding inpatient hospital services.

“The big hospitals are all not-for-profit organizations – why are they more expensive than me?” Dr. Orsak asks. “We are a full-fledged hospital. We have the same capabilities, including full-service labs, ultrasounds, MRIs, CT scans… everything you would get at a big hospital, only cheaper and faster.”

“My wife Sara and I live here and work here,” Dr. Orsak says. When St. Michael’s opened, our twin girls, Sierra and Savannah, were six, and our son Shannon was five. Today, all three are thriving adults that we feel fortunate to have raised in this community that we care so much about.”

The hospital actively participates in that

community, too. “We’ve sponsored every type of youth sport you can imagine –baseball, swim, soccer, basketball. We’ve also donated lifesaving AEDs throughout the community,” he continues. “We know of at least one life that was saved with one of those AEDs, so we’re thrilled to continue serving the public in this way.”

Renew, Energize, and Donate All Year Long

Keller Williams Southwest (KWSW) contributes to its community throughout the entire year in dozens of ways. Possibly the most anticipated day comes each May when associates get together to collectively help one local organization as a group.

RED Day is an annual day of service when Keller Williams’ offices give their associates time to contribute to their communities. “The goal is to ‘Give Where You Live.’ It’s very rewarding,” explains Sharon Parker of KWSW. “With 500+ agents in our KWSW office, you don’t see everyone very often. This event helps the community, but also allows you to get to know your colleagues better.”

Liska Sims, KWSW’s 2023 Rookie of the Year, says, “RED stands for Renew, Energize, and Donate. We take an entire day off work to dedicate to the community,” Liska says. “Every year, KWSW serves a different organization.”

KWSW spent this year’s RED Day at Reining

Strength Therapeutic Horsemanship in Richmond. Run by Heather Hernandez Sedillo and Richard (RD) Sedillo, Reining Strength’s focus is two-fold: teaching riding skills and incorporating potential therapeutic benefits into the riding lesson. They work with people of all ages who have physical, cognitive, social, and emotional needs.

“It was very educational and energizing. It was hard work and I was tired, but it was also inspiring,” Sharon adds. “You feel the success of helping other people.”

Though RED Day is a big event for everyone at KWSW, agents have numerous opportunities to give back to the community throughout the entire year. Twice a year, KWSW hosts their Shredding Hunger event, a paper shredding and food drive. The office provided free shredding to anyone who donated nonperishable items or made a financial contribution to the East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry.

In 2023-2024, KWSW supported more than a

dozen meaningful organizations, including: East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry; Child Advocates Of Fort Bend; Literacy Council of Fort Bend County; Reining Strength Therapeutic Horsemanship; The Fort Bend Education Foundation; Houston Black Real Estate Association; Asian American Real Estate Association; Texas Children’s Hospital; South Asian Real Estate Association; Toys for Tots; Red and Blue United, A Sugar Land First Responders Tribute; and various Fort Bend County pet shelters and rescues. Associates participate in KWSW activities all year long and also contribute their time personally to organizations of their choosing, many of them serving as board members and in other leadership positions with Fort Bend County organizations. “It’s so important to ‘Give Where You Live,’” Sharon says. The community wants to see their agents creating positivity in our shared community. They want to know we love where we live, just like they do.”

Keller Williams Southwest (KWSW.com) continues to be the leader in real estate services in Fort Bend and surrounding counties since 1991. We operate on the premise that if a company focuses all its resources on its agents and building their businesses, the agents, in turn, will build the company beyond all expectations. A Business

Built by Family

“When we started working with our dad, we’d visit clients and they always wanted Alan himself,” says Alan Burkhalter’s son, Jake. “They always got Alan, but they got us too. We had to prove that we were as capable as our dad.”

Jake and his brothers, Luke and Beau, have been learning the plumbing business from their dad since they were pre-school age. Alan is master plumber and owner of Fort Bend County’s go-to plumbing company, Alan’s Plumbing. Luke and Beau work at Alan’s, while Jake has taken the knowledge he learned from his dad to his job in outside sales at Ferguson Plumbing.

“When we were young, we would ride along on service calls. We called it ‘riding the bucket,’ because the van only had two seats, so we had to sit on a bucket in the back,” Luke says. “Because I was the youngest, it usually ended up being my spot,” adds Jake.

“I just remember always having to carry the tools… there were SO many tools!” Luke says.

Alan, the first generation of Burkhalter plumbers, founded his business out of his Missouri City home with his wife, Jennifer. Today, they have an office space, six vans, and three apprentices serving the Missouri City/Sugar Land area.

“We are your local plumbers,” continues Luke. Jake adds, “It’s been almost 30 years and we still serve the same community.”

“I grew up with friends whose families had family businesses, but none of my friends went into those businesses,” says Beau. “You don’t realize how special a family business is until you’re a part of it… you just don’t understand the family legacy.”

Some things Alan taught his sons?

“Leave it better than it was before,” says Jake. “If you work hard, you can play hard,” says Beau. “If you don’t do it right, someone else will have to fix it later,” says Jake. “If it bothers you, it will bother the homeowner,” says Luke. “Always be proud of what you do,” says Jake. “Sacrifice everything… just don’t drop the appliance! (i.e. the bathtub, the toilet, etc.)” says Jake.

“And I always observed his calmness and

easy demeanor. I never saw him agitated with a customer,” says Beau.

The family has grown right here in the community they serve. The sons are married and have all settled in Missouri City. “My son, Wyatt, came on his first service call with me when he was just five years old,” says Luke. “He said, ‘as soon as I’m out of my car seat, I’m coming to work with you all the time!’”

“My boys have been helping their father with plumbing since they could hold a wrench,” says Jennifer. Alan was raised on hard work and honesty. Alan says, “My grandfather believed in core values and integrity, and he passed these ideals on to us. Here at Alan’s Plumbing, hard work is all in the family.”

“Success is not about what I have...it’s about what I can do for others”

Aga’s Restaurant is giving back to the community… again!

Locally owned by Shaukat Maredia and his family, Aga’s is well-known for its commitment to the community. This time, the restaurant is helping 10 high school graduates with college expenses through scholarships.

“Every year, we award 10 scholarships, each worth $3,000, for a total of $30,000,” says Mr. Maredia. “The scholarships are fully funded from the restaurant’s profits. It’s our fourth year of awarding scholarships and it’s become an annual thing.”

Application acceptance has already closed for this year, but interested students had to submit an application, an essay, and SAT scores. “It’s open to all graduating students from the Houston area. This year we had over 600 applications. It’s a lot of work internally to process so many applications, but is worth the energy,” Mr. Maredia explains. “We take the stats into consideration, but what we really want to see is how involved the students are in their community.”

“Education in our country isn’t cheap. But one successful kid can change the future, not just for themselves and the generations after them, but for the community too,” he continues. “I believe one of the best steps to start wiping out poverty is education.”

Winners are invited to Aga’s for a celebratory dinner in the summer leading up to their departure for college. “We make it very special. They get to interact with other scholarship winners, their families, and my family. I talk to each student

personally, and share experiences of myself, my kids, and past winners about their successes.” Mr. Maredia says. “We strongly believe that kids should be educated to be successful in life. When a person gets an education, they can be successful anywhere.”

Opened in 2011, Aga’s has a 700-chair capacity. “We have tons of loyal customers. On Mother’s Day this year, we served over 5,000 customers!” Mr Maredia says. And if awarding $30,000 in scholarship funds to students wasn’t enough, Aga’s has made two other recent donations to the community – $25,000 to the Fort Bend County Fair and Rodeo and $25,000 to Child Advocates, which they would like to continue annually.

Mr. Maredia’s goal is to eventually increase the number of scholarships times 10. “My dream is to have 100 students, each receiving $3,000,” he concludes. “If you don’t appreciate your community who is supporting your business, shame on you. We just want to empower kids to go out and be successful. Success, to me, is not what I have. It’s about what I can do for others to help them succeed too.”

Fort Bend’s Best

BBQ & BLUES

Kennis and his business partner of 27 years, Furrest Greenwood, opened Williams Smokehouse BBQ & Blues in February. Kennis has true hometown history… his family settled in Sugar Land more than 75 years ago. “I have been cooking BBQ for at least 35 years,” he says. “Cooking comes naturally to me. My mom was a cook at Colony Bend Elementary, right here in the neighborhood, while I was a student there.”

“At Williams Smokehouse, we have a unique menu with lots of customer favorites,” says Kennis Williams, the namesake of Williams Smokehouse BBQ and Blues. “Our Famous Creole Candy Wings are slow smoked, fried to perfection and then tossed in our house made Creole Candy Sauce.”

“We also have some exciting new items we’ve recently added to the menu,” he continues. “We’re now offering loaded baked potatoes. They come traditionally loaded with butter, sour cream, cheese, and chives. Top them with your favorite choice of protein… a heaping mound of brisket, pulled pork, or turkey.”

Vegans also now have choices at the traditionally meat-heavy restaurant. “We’ve introduced an entire new menu section of vegan meals, including boneless vegan wings, vegan pulled pork sandwiches, and

a vegan cheeseburger,” Kennis explains.

Visit Williams Smokehouse Monday through Friday from 2pm until 7pm, and you have a big variety of drink and food choices at happy hour prices, including $7 margaritas, Lemon Drops, Cabernet and Chardonnay, $5 Green Tea shots and $10 Old Fashioneds. “You can also get domestic beer for $5.50 and imported beer for $7.50,” added Kennis. “Plus we offer a happy hour food menu to go with our drink specials, including brisket and cheese empanadas (a diner favorite), chicken bites, brisket loaded fries, and more – all at great prices!”

Williams Smokehouse has added an extensive catering menu that includes meals with one meat and two sides, all the way up to four meats and three sides. Or choose boxed lunches or meat by the pound. “Let us cater your next event,” Kennis says. “Your friends and family will love it. And don’t forget about us for Father’s Day. Let us BBQ for Dad on his special day. Check our social media sites for the latest on our Father’s Day specials.”

Exotic Fish Dishes in the Heart of Sugar Land

Jennifer Park opened her Japanese restaurant in Sugar Land during a very challenging time… it was January 2021, as people were just venturing out again after the unprecedented Covid quarantine. “People were eager to go out to eat,” Jennifer says. “So many people came, it was challenging to follow the guidelines of keeping groups six feet apart!”

“Umami is known for having very special fish flown in from Japan and Spain,” she continues. “Locals are excited that they no longer have to drive downtown for quality fish. And we see diners drive to us from as far as the Woodlands.”

Jennifer and her husband Jin Youl, who runs local Hanguk Taekwondo, previously lived on the west coast and in Las Vegas, so Sugar Land was a very different setting for them. They have an eight-year-old daughter and three-year-old son. “We have friends who live in Sugar Land who suggested we come and check it out,” says Jennifer. “When we arrived, I saw a pretty neighborhood with a very strong community. People are different in Texas – they’re much kinder than people

A Phenomenal Food Artist

Andy Peal, Recreation Director for Sienna Associations, and his team host more than 50 events every year. “In 2023, more than 9,000 residents participated in Sienna’s recreational programs,” Andy says. “We’re on track to hit 11,000 this year!”

Someone has to feed all those people… Miki Stripling, owner of Richmond, Texas-based Bee A Little Cheesy, is perfect for the job! “Miki is extraordinary, just phenomenal,” Andy says. “She’s taken our food presentations to the next level. Her attention to detail is impeccable. We’ve been working with her for several years, and she hasn’t done the same menu or presentation twice. She creates very personalized presentations. She’s an artist.”

With 17 years experience handling Sienna’s recreational events, Andy knows what his groups need. “Our events further extend the lifestyle our residents have invested in. We have sports leagues, classes, seminars, and other events that allow our residents to participate in activities right in their own neighborhood,” he says.

Andy chose Bee A Little Cheesy to cater his wife Jill’s 40th birthday party. “It was a fun event with 70 guests. Miki is so thoughtful about her presentations. She asked Jill about her favorite foods and assembled them beautifully,” Andy says. “I didn’t know mac and cheese could look so beautiful!”

Sienna residents for the last seven years, the Peal family enjoys the neighborhood activities themselves. “When we started our family, we wanted our son, Brady, to grow up in the lifestyle the Sienna community provides,” Andy says. Jill is a fourth grade teacher in Sienna, and Brady has followed in his dad’s footsteps of being a sports fanatic. “At age 18, I was a basketball player with nowhere to play, so I started

in Las Vegas. We’re in a great community for raising our children.”

“We do a lot of sushi. We only serve the types of dishes you see at high-end restaurants, and we have a great wine list to go with our elevated food menu,” she explains.

One of their most popular items is their Miso Black Cod, “a whole fish that is fileted in house, marinated in our special soy blend, then sous vide and finished on the grill. It is juicy and flavored to perfection,” Jennifer explains. “Our customers also love our Crispy Rice, which is fried rice with chunks of spicy tuna, finished off with special sauces, and our Wagyu flaming steaks. We change the menu every few months to introduce new flavors.”

Umami’s head chef, Samuel Choi, originally from California, has been with them since the restaurant opened.

Open for lunch and dinner seven days a week (closed 3pm-5pm), reservations can be made by calling the restaurant. Party platters are also available, and the entire restaurant can be reserved for private parties.

my own league,” he says. “When I came to Sienna, there wasn’t a lot of programming, so I had to develop it. One of my team members grew up playing in the Sienna leagues and now manages them.”

Another team member found Miki and Bee A Little Cheesy, and the team has never looked back for its catering needs. Andy says, “Miki has become an extension of our department. She has become part of our family.”

Artisanal

wine at reasonable prices? Check! Delicious entrees and small bites? Check! DJs spinning your favorite tunes? Check! Conveniently located in Sugar Land Town Square? Check! Just add friends and family and you’re set for a night of fun.

Vino & Vinyl Supper Club, created by Paul and Nichole Killingsworth has been serving Sugar Land, Missouri City and the greater Houston metroplex for the last seven years. In October of 2023, Craig Adams and Virginia Bond bought the majority ownership and are fully committed to keeping all the vibes alive. You can count on Vino & Vinyl to serve delicious food and artisanal wine in a great atmosphere.

“We’re an American Scratch Kitchen offering comfort food, like short rib with mashed potatoes and lemon pepper salmon, mixed with diversity, like octopus skillet and surf and turf mussels,” Craig says. “Add fried risotto balls or empanadas and a delicious dessert, and you have a full, multi-course meal.”

Craig and Virginia have traveled the world – Italy, South America, France, Chile, Napa, and even the Texas Hill Country – to find unusual, yet affordable wines. “We love artisanal wines from family-owned vineyards,” Craig explains. “We have a heavy domestic list with selections from around the world. We’ve worked hard on pricing to make unique bottles price competitive. We’re not doing the steakhouse mark-up.”

Married nine years, the couple has an 11-year-old daughter, MaryGrace, who is excited to attend First Colony Middle School next year. She spends her spare time at Inspiration Stage performing in musicals. “On Saturday afternoons, you can sometimes find MaryGrace behind the turntable. She loves to DJ,” Craig says. “Just be ready for pop music when she’s in charge.”

“We have three popular music mixers on the turntable: Paul, the original

owner of Vino & Vinyl, deejays Thursday nights; DJ B. Major spins Friday nights; and DJ Mike Bondz selects the tunes Saturday nights,” Craig explains. Check the restaurant’s website for information about Father’s Day brunch and to make reservations for any night of the week. “When people talk about Vino & Vinyl, the word I hear most is ‘vibe,’” Craig concludes. “Our guests just love the vibe of our place. It’s a relaxed dining experience with great music and excellent service.”

IT’S JUST “THE BEGINNING” FOR LOCAL RECORDING ARTIST

SHANEAR NICOLE

Sugar Land resident Shanear Nicole is just 20 years old, but has already introduced her first single, “The Beginning,” released in May. “I finished the song my senior year in high school,” she explains. “I found an amazing vocal trainer who helped me get in tune with myself – I felt like I needed to find my own voice – and the song just completed itself! As I was graduating and starting my adult life, ‘The Beginning’ just made sense. The song is about balance… you have a beautiful and bright future ahead, but you don’t want to forget the past.”

Shanear describes her musical style as pop, with a new wave influence. “I’ve been listening to a lot of 80s music. Tears for Fears is one of my favorite artists, along with Janet Jackson –her Velvet Rope album inspired my hair – and Siouxsie and the Banshees. And I’m really drawn to Molly Ringwald. I just love her sass!”

After growing up in Florida, Shanear moved with her mom and 15-year-old sister to Sugar Land after they connected with Dianna Liner of Liner Entertainment Group. “My mom has been managing me since I was three years old and we felt like we had maxed out our music resources in Florida,” Shanear says. “Since Houston has a big music industry, we settled here. We love the diversity of the area because we love meeting new people and experiencing new cultures.”

“The Beginning” was produced by Matthew Tryba out of Denver. “He’s worked with One Republic, Taylor Swift, and Ariana Grande. He liked my song and wanted to work with

me,” Shanear says. “He’s a musical genius in my eyes.”

She’s hoping to surprise her listeners on an upcoming single – “I’m trying to get permission to sample one of my favorite 80s artists” – and is in discussions to perform at an upcoming festival.

“Vivienne Westwood inspired my whole look. Her influences in the fashion industry and her activism are admirable,” Shanear says. “And I really look up to my mom. She’s always right there when I need her.”

“The Beginning” is currently streaming on all platforms, including Apple Music, Spotify, Instagram, TikTok, and more.

How Fort Bend’s Mexican Food Scene

exciting became even more

The days when Mexican food in Fort Bend was all crispy tacos and yellow cheese are long behind us, thanks to the innovative chefs at Lago Mariscos. In the heart of Sugar Land on Hwy 6 between 59 and Lexington, Lago Mariscos serves creative seafood dishes with an elevated, authentic Mexican style.

Its location means it’s perfect for lunch crowds from the many businesses nearby. With a special lunch menu designed specifically for a quick in-and-out, diners can enjoy items like fajitas and delicious shrimp dishes.

Owners Sergio Cabrera Sr. and Manuel Cabrera Sr. were born in Michoacan, Mexico, with its stretch of coastline on the Pacific Ocean. Being raised in a gulf state, seafood dishes come from the heart of these brothers, who brought their eclectic tastes to the Houston area. They opened their first of many Los Cucos restaurants in 1991. Today, they have 19 Los Cucos locations and four seafood-speciality restaurants, and are assisted on the restaurant front lines by their sons, Sergio Jr. and Manuel Jr. (Coming soon: two new Vida Mariscos locations, one in Rosenberg and one in Webster.)

On a sunny Sunday afternoon, the restaurant is busy. It’s loud, yes. But in an inviting way, with a Mariachi band providing entertainment. Almost every seat is filled with happy diners, even the 30 or so stools surrounding the huge, welcoming bar anchored in the middle of the large open space. With at least two dozen TVs above the bar showing the Astros game and half-full glass sliders of colorful redand yellow-rimmed margarita glasses

– the rest of the glasses are various levels of full around the restaurant – people are eating, drinking, talking, and laughing together.

The restaurant’s signature drink is the Grand Anejo with all the components a good margarita requires – Don Julio Anejo tequila and Grand Marnier, shaken with organic agave and fresh lemon and lime juices. It pairs well with one of the unique dishes on the menu, also a diner favorite, Pulpo

“FITNESS

Darren Stewart, master trainer and owner of Fitness by Darren, believes a day-today healthy lifestyle is more important than ever at 37. “I want to show friends and clients that you can still have energy for your kids, your family, and your daily life, no matter your age,” he says.

For a dozen years, Darren has been sharing his fitness expertise with the residents of Sugar Land. “Fitness is the Fountain of Youth,” he explains. “I see it in my daily life – it’s so important to be healthy. I’m a newlywed. My wife, Melissa, and I were married in February. We’re a fitness family. We have a rescue lab mix with a lot of energy, and I take her for runs with me to help. I’m currently training to qualify for the Boston Marathon, so the running helps me prepare.”

Darren originally planned to go to Physical Therapy school after graduating with a degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Biology, but decided he loved the active lifestyle a fitness career offered more. “I prefer staying active,” Darren explains. “I do private, one-on-one training and personalize

“I am currently training a high school elite athlete planning to compete at the collegiate level. She ended up signing with the number one fencing team in the country, the University of Notre Dame,” he continues. “I’ve even seen my clients get fit enough to stop taking medications, such as blood pressure and cholesterol medication.”

Darren himself practices what he teaches. “I run almost every day and lift a lot of weights to keep a balanced workout approach,” he says.

Darren offers 30- to 45-minute sessions…“whatever works for each individual’s goals and their budgets,” he says. Unique Patients Call for Unique Treatment Plans

Fort Bend Rheumatology Associates was started in 2005 by CEO Dr. Edward Hernandez. What began as a small, one-provider practice has grown to multiple providers with multiple locations.

“Rheumatologists manage patients with systemic connective tissue disorders. Most of what we treat has no cure, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, gout, psoriatic arthritis, vasculitis, ankylosing spondylitis, antiphospholipid syndrome, giant cell arteritis, Raynaud’s, scleroderma, Sjogren’s syndrome, and more,” says Dr. Hernandez. “By managing the disease, we help patients live longer, more productive lives. We’re in it for the long game. We want patients to be able to hold their grandkids and take walks with their spouses in their golden years.”

Dr. Hernandez observes, “No two patients are the same. They all have different disease conditions and comorbidities, so they all have to be treated uniquely. We look at all of the symptoms you are experiencing as we work toward a

diagnosis. For example, if your symptoms have multi-system involvement, it might be one unifying systemic disorder. Once we have a diagnosis, we can target the mechanisms and manage the disease by balancing medication toxicity and overall well-being. This mix is different for different people. Additionally, not all medications are appropriate for every individual. For example, some medications cannot be used on someone with diabetes.”

The main symptoms of inflammatory diseases are prolonged swelling of joints and prolonged morning stiffness. “Family history also plays a big role,” Dr. Hernandez explains. “We will order tests that your primary care doctor doesn’t usually order. Even if certain inflammatory markers are negative, you may still have an inflammatory condition that we can help you manage.”

Fort Bend Rheumatology Associates offers many services in-house, including physical therapy, labs, infusion therapy, hydration therapy, ultrasound, telehealth, and clinical trials. “We understand that getting referred

out for services can be difficult,” says Dr. Hernandez. “We try to do as much as we can right here. We have in-house infusion therapy… it’s something that not all rheumatologists have in-house. We also do physical therapy on site, which is unusual for rheumatologist offices. After we donated our MRI machine to a clinic in Mexico during COVID, we started using the room for physical therapy for our patients. We also do ultrasound-guided injections.”

The practice currently has three physicians and two physician assistants (PAs) on staff, with appointments available at two locations – one in Sugar Land and one in Lake Jackson. The practice always welcomes new patients and accepts most insurances.

For 19 years and counting, Fort Bend Rheumatology Associates thanks this community for your trust in their care. “You’re the reason we’re still here!”

Does Your Kitchen and Bath Need Updating? Call AIS!

If you’ve lived in your Fort Bend County home for decades, like so many residents, it may be time to give your home a little facelift.

“In our area, homes are 20, 30, 40 years old – they’re ready to be updated,” says owner of AIS Remodeling, Jaison Thottumkal (JT), who happens to be one of those residents who has lived here for decades. “I’ve lived in Fort Bend County for 30 years and have had my own business for 20 of those years. We specialize in kitchen and bathroom remodeling, flooring, and carpentry. We’re a full service remodeling company.”

“We love updating kitchens because that’s where everyone meets,” he continues. And JT knows a little bit about busy kitchens. He and his wife, Preena, have two active, growing boys – Joshua is nine and Jaiden is seven. “They’re growing up in Ft. Bend County,” JT says. “They attend Leonetti Elementary and are busy with Cub Scouts.”

Though AIS Remodeling spends a lot of time updating homes in Fort Bend County, they also travel as far as The Woodlands, Lake Jackson, and everywhere in between. “My dad is a custom home builder and commercial developer, and my family imports stone. I started this business because of my family ties with the construction industry,” JT explains. “I used to go to my dad’s construction sites with him, and now I sometimes take

my kids to work with me.”

“We provide full service to our clients. We go to distributors to help clients pick materials, and they can always use our discounts with vendors. We pass the savings on to our customers,” JT continues. “We only use Tier One vendors – vendors we know will stand behind their products.”

On a recent update in New Territory, AIS completely gutted the bathroom. “We put in new cabinets, shower and vanity fixtures, flooring, countertops and expanded the shower to give them a double-headed shower,” JT says. “And all services come with manufacturer and labor warranties. We guarantee any shower will not leak.”

If it’s time to give your older home an update, call AIS today!

Traditional Korean Taekwondo for the Whole Family

With so many families in the Missouri City/Sugar Land area, there are many martial arts schools. What makes Hanguk Taekwondo stand out? “We wanted to bring traditional Taekwondo to this area,” says Black Belt Master Jin Youl Park. “I was born and raised in Korea and learned martial arts from traditional Korean instructors.”

Jin Youl started his school near the front of Sienna in 2021, around the same time his wife, Jennifer, opened her Sugar Land-based Japanese restaurant, Umami. “I work well with all types of kids, because I have two silly kids of my own,” he says. He and Jennifer have an eight-year-old daughter and three-year-old son.

“I teach hard-headed kids, kids with an overabundance of energy, shy kids, even special needs kids. And I’ve seen them all succeed, blossom and grow into amazing students,” he says. “I care for all of my students as if they were my own. If you want to teach your children about respect, a sense of community, and how to be their best self, start Taekwondo at a young age. We have students as young as three years old here!”

Hanguk Taekwondo’s classes are split into age levels and belt ranges. “We have our Tiny Champions who are three to five years old, our Little Champions who are five to seven years old, and then students graduate to belt ranges,” Jin Youl explains. “We also have a great teenage and adult class every day, plus one or two classes a week for those with special needs.”

“We have a few students who have been with us since we opened,” he continues. “We had a cute seven-year-old in his second year with us who told us he wants to be a Taekwondo Master himself and wants to represent the USA in the Olympics for Taekwondo one day.”

“It’s Nice to Be Important, but It’s More Important to Be Nice”

McDonald’s. Sysco. Beyond Meat. Scholastic. You’ve heard of all these companies, in part due to Evan Nave’s work as a brand marketer.

“I’m passionate about shaping a brand’s strategy and articulating its story. So I decided to go out on my own to help busi nesses large and small with marketing, innovation, and business plan ning,” Evan says.

Nave Consulting Group specializes in brand strategy, go-tomarket plans, innovation, and business planning. He offers a free consultation that is “just a conversation… the who, why, and where you’re going,” he says. “It all starts with the question, what does success look like to you?”

Evan’s business has taken him from Atlanta to Raleigh to Chicago and now Texas. “I moved to Chicago when I was with McDonald’s and I learned how bitterly cold it could get,” he said. “I also realized that ‘midwest nice’ is very different from the Southern hospitality I’m used to.”

A single dad sharing custody of his nine-year-old son, Evan Jr., and his four-year-old daughter, Kennedy, Evan remains an Atlanta sports fan, even after his move to Texas. He spends his spare time tap-dancing. “I’m passionate about the Arts and have a real love for the stage,” he says. “I can tell a story with my feet – it’s how I express myself.”

The book “What Got You Here, Won’t Get You There,” was an important tool in developing the way Evan views business – he believes

change must happen to keep growing. “Sometimes it’s hard for people to make a shift,” he says. “But it’s necessary for success. People are often tempted to try to market to a bigger group, thinking more is better. But the shotgun approach doesn’t always work. A laser focus can bring you better returns.”

“I try to live a life in which I appreciate the contributions of everyone,” Evan says. “My mom always instilled this in me – ‘It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.’ You should always try to see people for their hearts, and not just what they can do for you.”

Smiles All Around

When Dr. David Lee completed his residency in Houston a year ago, he didn’t think twice about moving out to the suburbs and joining Dr Shilpa Chandiwal at her pediatric dental clinic, Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry. “We’ve settled in Richmond, where I get to enjoy a lot of the diversity of the county in our clinic every day,” Dr. Lee says. “And I’m getting a lot of mentorship from Dr. Shilpa. I’m growing as a clinician and a person.”

The practice is on a mission to provide comprehensive dental care for your little one in the most child-friendly way. “The big difference with kids is that they want to learn,” says Dr. Lee “Once you educate them and show them what to do, they want to do it.”

Married three years, Dr. Lee and his wife, Jae Yun, welcomed their first daughter, Amelia, six months ago. “My family and I love the quiet atmosphere in Richmond,” Dr. Lee says. “The people are friendly and the community is very nice. And you’re still close enough to downtown to enjoy its benefits too…it’s a good balance.”

Dr. Lee prefers to leave the crying at home with his infant. He doesn’t like to see patients crying in the office. “My goal is to put a smile back on kids’ faces. Pediatric dentistry is all about helping children,” he says. “It’s all worth it in the end when they’re smiling after their appointment and giving me a big hug.”

Today, Healthy Teeth Pediatric has three associates – Dr. Cindy Hurd, Dr. Gail Joiner, and, of course, Dr. David Lee – with Dr. Shilpa at the helm. Services offered include nitrous oxide sedation and conscious sedation, hospital dentistry, laser frenectomies, white crowns, Invisalign, braces for children and teens, and more.

Protect Baby’s Health by Taking Care of your OWN Health

Dr. Asha Patel wants to share some information about caring for infants. Expecting her second baby now, she wants expecting parents and family members to know how they can protect their new bundle of joy from oral bacteria.

“It’s imperative that those trying to conceive come in for routine dental care,” Dr. Patel says. “Studies show that parents can transmit cavity-causing and gum disease-causing bacteria from their mouths to their babies who do not have an immune system yet to fight off these oral bacterias. Some babies can really get sick, which results in them not eating well, becoming lethargic, losing weight, not producing enough soiled diapers, and more.”

A 2015 study focusing on oral health behaviors and bacterial transmission from mother to child found that mothers participated in behaviors such as sharing a spoon with their child and kissing on the lips. The study found that these behaviors related to the transmission of oral bacteria. Protecting babies and toddlers from the maternal transmission of oral bacteria is vital to their oral health.

“For women who are pregnant, it’s tough for them to be seen by dentists because no one wants to put the mom and fetus at risk. As soon as the mom gets clearance after her delivery, she should come in for a routine exam and cleaning to minimize exposure to her newborn baby,” Dr. Patel explains. “In the meantime, while mom is pregnant, we recommend brushing teeth twice a day

and flossing daily.”

Other research states: “Tooth decay is a bacterial infection and you can spread it from one person to another during the window of infectivity, which is during infancy and especially during the time of tooth eruption.”

“Dads need routine check-ups and cleanings, too,” Dr. Patel continues. “If Dad has periodontal disease, he could spread that gingiva bacteria to his baby just by kissing them on the cheek.”

“No baby should experience a periodontal disease-filled kiss from anyone!” Dr. Patel concludes.

As Dr. Patel and her family prepare for the arrival of their second child, she’s encouraging couples and family members to come in for routine exams and cleanings; it could mean the difference between a healthy and happy newborn versus a sick and fussy newborn.

The EXCHANGE CLUB of Sugar Land

Making Our City a Better Place to Live

aul Barnett is a fixture at the Exchange Club of Sugar Land… he’s the current treasurer, a current and past board member, and a past president. “Exchange Club is a U.S.-based service organization that helps you get involved with the community,” Paul says. “It’s a gathering of service-minded people who want to make Sugar Land and Fort Bend County a better place to live.”

The national service project for all Exchange Clubs is the prevention of child abuse. The Exchange Club of Sugar Land, with just over 100 members, has three additional focuses: Americanism (“We’re all proud Americans!” Paul says); community service; and youth causes.

John McMillen, who handles UpClose Magazine’s business development, recently found the Exchange Club and is proud to be its newest member. “It’s a group of business people dedicated to serving our community with service projects,” he explains. “It’s great for networking with other business owners, providing visibility in the community, and it’s a group of true Americans who stand for American ideals and pass their traditions on to others.”

“You can also develop your leadership and speaking skills,” Paul adds. “When I joined the Exchange Club, I never imagined I would be president one day!”

With two or three activities planned each week, the club stays busy. “The Field of Honor, at the UH Sugar

Land Campus in November, pays tribute to Fort Bend Heroes by flying flags in people’s names,” Paul explains. “Every flag has a sponsor. For example, I sponsored one for my Dad, a Navy Veteran. Last year, we had 1,000 sponsored flags; this year, we will have 2,000.”

Their biggest fundraiser of the year, the Spaghetti Dinner, funds many causes, including Child Advocates of Fort Bend, Fort Bend County Women’s Center, Texana Center, Fort Bend Council on Substance Abuse, and more.

“At my first meeting, I met former Congressman Pete Olson. His passion to help the community is contagious,” John says. Help make Sugar Land a better place to live. Join the Exchange Club today.

An Update That the Kids and Grandkids Can Enjoy

Glenn Gagnon and his wife, Jill BylerHarrison, have lived in their Missouri City home for 30 years. It’s the home they raised their two adult children in and where their grandchildren come to visit. “We have our grandchildren over as much as possible,” Glenn says. They recently took on the huge project of painting the entire house, with the help of The Re-Modelista, Teri Gilberg. “We painted cabinets, walls, vents, ceilings – everything!” he explains. “It was a big job. We had literally every room done, top to bottom.”

As customers have grown to expect from Teri, she was at the house every day updating the homeowners on the progress of the project. “There was always a lot of communication. Teri was very straightforward about when they would be here, how many workers would come, and what time they would arrive,” Glenn says. “Teri was here every day checking on how things were going.”

“For us, referrals are a huge thing, and when we’re referred, we usually aren’t disappointed,” he continues. “We saw the Re-Modelista in UpClose Magazine, plus a friend used her on a kitchen remodel, and she was overthe-moon happy.”

In re-doing the entire home, the couple chose four different paint colors to be used throughout the house. “What I liked about Teri was that she was adamant she wanted to make everything right. She goes out of her way to make sure customers are happy,” Glenn says. “Teri’s team kept working on every detail until we were satisfied.”

Both personal trainers by trade for 40 years, Glenn and Jill also run Hackberry Fish ing Camp in Louisiana. Luckily, the painting job was completed just before their busy summer season.

“We would definitely recom mend Teri and her team,” Glenn concludes. “We’ve remodeled five houses in the last few years. The most impor tant thing is finding a person who stands behind their work. Teri is that person.”
