by Amy Sharp nge Hillz is an artist that pushes himself beyond his limits. So when he saw a YouTube video depicting an artist speed painting a picture in ten minutes, it caught his eye. “The first time I tried,” says Ange, “the painting took me two days. Now, I can do that painting in about five minutes.” For the past five years, Ange has been speed painting at events all over the country. This is an intriguing, energetic performance. Ange paints with both hands, engages the audience, and many times is painting upside down. In mere minutes, he produces a bright and engaging piece of commercial art. His live show is perfect for corporate events, trade shows and charities...where the paintings are then auctioned to raise money for the cause at hand. It was at one of these charity events that Don Kerstetter, owner of Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land, first met Ange. Don bought one of his paintings, and the two became friends. “Ange is an amazing individual,” says Don, “and his work is fantastic. I’m commissioning him to do some pieces for the dealership, and I knew his live performance would be a perfect addition to our Chili Cookoff.” And Don was right. Ange entertained the Chili Cookoff crowd by painting two paintings. The first portrays a police officer holding a baby...a nod to

the Sugar Land Police Officer’s Association, the beneficiary of the annual Chili Cookoff. Ange says, “When I was discussing what to paint with Don and Mark Kolon (Classic Chevy General Manager,) we decided we wanted something that shows how the police officers help the community. A reminder that they are here to both protect us and help us.” The second painting depicts the Stephen F. Austin on horseback statue in Sugar Land’s Town Square. The two paintings were auctioned, raising $4000 for the Sugar Land Police Officer’s Association. Ange grew up in Rwanda. He was influenced to become an artist by his older brother. “He’s my inspiration. I watched him paint growing up and just thought it was the coolest thing ever. I wanted to do the same thing.” Ange left his home country at the height of the Rwandan genocide. He’s grateful for his life, and what he’s become today...that he’s able to raise money for the less fortunate through his work. “I do a lot of events, I’m very busy. But I’m never too busy for charity. And that’s what I love about Don. We have a lot in common. He’s a very humble, charitable human being that I’m proud to call a friend.” For more information or to book a performance with Ange, visit www.visualpaint.com.

he pool at Paul and Rosie Williams home in Fort Bend is about twenty years old. “And it looked every bit of that,” says Paul. “Really beat up. It was dated, ugly and the equipment was noisy. There was nothing attractive about it. In fact, it looked very similar to the pool we had built at our previous home... back in the early ‘90s. But the pool did have ‘good bones,’ so we decided to do a complete makeover.” Paul had several companies come out to take a look, including Bratton Pools—the family-owned company he’d seen in a local magazine. “What I really liked about Mike Bratton (co-owner of Bratton pools) was his willingness to listen to my ideas. Others that came out were either pushing ideas that were in their comfort zone, or concepts that were very expensive. Mike was open to our ideas...even when they were new to him. He was helpful as well. He made suggestions—like tiling the entire spa instead of plastering—that were just beautiful.” “As Paul found out, nothing here is cookie-cutter,” says Mike Bratton. “We build and renovate to fit your wants, your needs, and your personality. We come to your home, take a look at your space, listen to you and get a feel for what you are wanting. The trend in pools today is that they are part of your outdoor

living space. To create the Williams’ space, we replaced the pool tile, coping, and plaster. The spa is now all tile, with a travertine spa spillway, sheer descent waterfalls, and custom deck finish to match the travertine coping. We added travertine ledge stone on raised walls and updated their old noisy equipment. We completely replaced their old dive stand that was rusting out at the bolts. LED lights were installed for ambiance. This pool and space is a great example of taking ideas and making them into a beautiful reality. Paul and Rosie knew what they were looking for, and we were happy to build it for them. It’s the same process whether you’re renovating an existing pool and space or building new!” “The final product is absolutely gorgeous,” says Paul. “As with most projects, issues did pop up along the way...and I commend Mike’s communication skills and the way he addressed them. He just took care of it, and really accomplished what we were looking for at the end of the day. I’m an engineer by trade, and the quality of work is excellent. I love to just sit outside and take it all in...it’s so nice out there!” Bratton Pools ~ 281-988-7700 www.brattonpools.com

hen a pint-sized patient first sets foot inside Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental, it’s not a dentist office he/ she enters, but a magical under-the-sea playland with tropical fish frolicking on the walls. The waiting room is bursting with toys, games, a movie, and exciting nooks to explore. Dr. Faisal M. Khan, DDS, and his staff wanted all of his patients—from tots to teens—to feel excited about coming to see them. “A happy patient is an easy patient,” explains Dr. Khan. “And an easy patient means a happy parent. But to tell you the truth, we had an absolute blast creating a fun place for kids to go.” What kid doesn’t love the idea of lying on a cool new surfboard to have his/her teeth examined in the “Surfer” room? Or getting treatments done in “Dolphin Cove” or the “Turtle Room?” “A dentist office doesn’t have to be scary,” says Dr. Khan. “With two amazing kids of my own, I know how important it is for all children to feel safe and secure. We do everything we can to make each patient know how special they are to us.” Kids may love Dr. Khan’s flair for beach-themed extravaganzas, but parents appreciate knowing just how top-notch his credentials are. A Detroit native, Dr. Khan graduated from Alma College where he received multiple scholarships. He completed his dental training at the prestigious New York University College of Dentistry, graduating in 2005. He completed his General Practice Residency at Montefiore Medical Center, and then pursued a Fellowship at Albert Einstein, specializing in

LIFTED RIDES W

ill Williams bought his first Jeep in 2007. “I’d never owned one before...I was a sports car guy. But I lived in California and wanted something that allowed me to throw my Great Dane in the backseat and go to the beach.” Will took that first Jeep and did a small lift and a tire upgrade. People noticed. “I got a ton of compliments. But what really blew me away, was its resale value. I bought it one year used for $23,000. I put about $4,000 worth of work into it and sold it five years later for $21,000. I had no idea how well Jeeps held their value!” So Will started a little side business. He bought Jeeps, outfitted and upgraded them, and then sold them on the internet. “It wasn’t long before I was making 3x my salary in Jeep sales,” says Will. “So I quit my job, moved home to Texas, and we’re building Jeeps!” “We’re not just building aggressive, overthe-top ‘macho guy’ Jeeps,” continues Will. “We also focus on developing luxurious, versatile vehicles. We have a diversified

product line which is represented best in our company motto, ‘Lifted rides for all lifestyles’... you can pick from one of our packages or build your own. A lot of our customers are housewives that just don’t want another Suburban or minivan. We build them a beautiful, one-of-a-kind, edgy vehicle with all of the comforts they’ve come to enjoy. Want all the bells, whistles and comforts of a Range Rover...you got it!” Evo Off Road builds for Jeep dealers directly and more than a dozen luxury auto dealerships. But no need to go retail, you can buy yours wholesale from Will’s shop. “90% of our builds are are in the $50,000 price range...the same price as a luxury truck or SUV. And Chrysler Capital Funding will finance 100% of the Jeep purchase and upgrades.”

When you’re ready, stop by the shop. “We’ll custom build your Jeep on paper. Then our fleet partner—AutoNation Chrysler and Jeep at US 99 and I-10— takes care of your trade-in if you have one, and that’s where your base Jeep is purchased. They deliver it to us the next day and we get to work. Each day we send you pictures of your Jeep... dramatic changes over about a five day period. You return for delivery, we open the garage doors...and watch your eyes light up. You’ll be amazed at your new toy!” Jeeps are 100% made in America and the crew at Evo is 100% United States Veterans. Evo is a family-owned and operated business. Will is in charge of sales, his wife Mercedes handles production, and his sister-in-law Ashley takes care of parts ordering. Will and Mercedes’ daughter Ariyana is at the shop everyday after school...often shooting hoops around back. “She can pretty much beat everyone in the shop at HORSE.” “I would love to show you what we do. Stop by anytime!”

Getting Back to the Business of being an American

A

by Don McCoy

s we approach the celebration of our American Independence, I am reminded that Chambers of Commerce consistently strive to help businesses realize the American Dream. The dream of independence and freedom, the dream of making a living for you and your family, the dream of making a difference in your community. Without the Declaration of Independence, we as Americans could not have attained our own independence or economic prosperity. It gave us the opportunity to engage in free enterprise and industry to the limits of our innate talents that reside in each of us. To maintain our independence we need leadership. It’s time to get back to the business of being an AMERICAN again and be a leader. As John Maxwell said, “Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others.” In our own small way, it is our mission at the Fulshear Area Chamber of Commerce to help its members realize their visions and achieve their goals. To inspire and empower our members to do their best work. To offer opportunities to serve on committees, projects, and boards that will help develop so many new leaders we can count on. On Monday July 4th at 5:30pm in downtown Fulshear, the Fulshear Area Chamber of Commerce will take the lead and celebrate our independence and our leaders. Come join us! They Keep On

I

Chuggin’!

t’s hard to believe that in 1873, the Western Narrow Gauge Railroad laid down tracks from Houston to Sealy. That was a mere 143 years ago! Shortly thereafter, the newly chartered Texas legislature proudly added the name “Texas” to the railroad line, and the Texas Western Narrow Gauge Railroad, or TWNGRR, was born. It consisted of box cars, flat cars and a passenger coach...and moved cotton crops from the “Brazos Bottom” to Houston. The TWNGRR traveled a “brisk” fifteen miles per hour in the beginning and then, due to engine and roadbed trouble, gradually slowed to about five miles per hour. It was so slow that one train passenger who saw his friends riding alongside the railroad in a wagon, jumped off, visited with them for a while, and then got back on the train with no difficulty. There was no formal train schedule. The TWNGRR stopped so passengers could gather pecans, berries or to hunt and fish on lands that were teeming with game. But getting there could be rough. The bridge over the Brazos River was so precarious, everyone had to disembark so the engineer could inch the big iron monster over that rickety old bridge. Once across, passengers were allowed to get on again, much relieved no doubt, that no one had perished! Ulysses S. Grant was a one-time director of the TWNGRR. His oldest sons were president and treasurer respectively, but financial scandal plagued their tenure there. Unfortunately, the railway was in trouble. By 1895, Mrs. Nora Rusky Campbell, who lived nearby, reported that only berry pickers from Houston came anymore. Competition from other railway lines forced the TWNGRR into bankruptcy two years later. Passenger trains back then were far from luxurious. The seats weren’t plush the way they are today; they were made of itchy, slippery horsehair. Worse still, there was no air conditioning in the summer or heat in the winter. But humankind is nothing if not inventive, and now everything from the Olympic Sports Complex in Athens to the Statue of Liberty has an air conditioner--and not just any air conditioner either, they have a Trane. “Trane is a classic American success story,” says Gerald Svetlik, owner of True Fix A/C & Heating. “The new Trane Variable Speed XV20i system with TruComfort technology is the best air conditioner on the market. It runs at the exact right speed necessary to keep you comfortable. It’s quiet, effective and a real energy saver...and you may also be eligible for 0% APR financing or instant rebates.” It’s been more than 100 years since TWNGRR chugged across the area we call home. But Trane and True Fix keep on chuggin’. Trane’s been around for more than 100 years and True Fix is going on 50. “It might be ‘Hard to stop a Trane,’” adds Gerald, “...but it’s even harder to stop True Fix. You can trust us to keep you cool and happy.”

es Kelley grew up in Katy. “I’ve always wanted to have a business—provide a service—to the residents of Katy. I thought of all kinds of ideas...but they all seemed to cost a million dollars to start up. My grandpa gave me a sound piece of advice. He said, ‘You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. There are services out there that people need on a daily basis. You just need to find one that fits you.’” “I started researching and the answer was obvious,” continues Wes. “Cleaning. My mom had both worked for cleaning businesses and ran her own, so I knew a little about it. Plus I spent three years in the Army, where they make you clean things that don’t even need cleaning...like the rocks in the landscape! I knew I could make a business out of it, and You’ve Got Maids was the perfect fit for what I was looking for.” The foundation of success at You’ve Got Maids is “quality, reliability, and consistently caring.” Wes says, “I personally come out and do your in-home estimate. We go over your services...I want to make sure things get done the way you want them done. If something requires special care—like a family heirloom—you have the opportunity to tell me about it. Then on the first cleaning day, I’m back with your team...and you always have the same team! I introduce them and walk them through your house. All of our maids are background checked and have trained at our Maid University. We require a high level of customer service, attention to detail, thoroughness, and we almost exclusively use eco-friendly products. ack in 2009, Jared Williams opened the doors of the very first Dynamic Fitness with a simple vision—to create a place where everyone could enjoy fitness with access to state-of-the-art equipment, superior customer service, cleanliness, and straightforward, affordable pricing. Today—with four locations and more to come—fitness enthusiasts all over the metropolitan area enjoy Jared’s vision and creation. Jared says, “I credit my team with this success. Their hardwork and dedication made this dream a reality. That’s why 2016 is a year of reinvesting...in both this team and these facilities.” The oldest locations—Pearland and Sugar Land—will be updated to match the others. Changes include materials with improved durability and a color scheme carefully selected to provide the ambiance clients have to come to expect at Dynamic Fitness. Jared says, “We are not going to let our facilities start looking like a bruised banana peel...we aim to keep them looking dynamic.” “And our employees...they’re our greatest asset! We provide the training they need to help you achieve your fitness goals. And we are all about fun too. Our top club manager was awarded a trip to Mexico. We recently kicked off the 2nd quarter with a team building staycation at the Hotel Galvez. My philosophy is that when someone truly loves their job, it shows. That’s where you come in—our clients. When you walk into our clubs, you’ll find everyone that works here is engaging and dynamic. This is your club, and we are here to help you. We check in with you, see how it’s going. We want to know that you’re happy with the gym and your workouts...and we want to make sure you’re having the best day possible.” In addition to dynamic employees in a dynamic environment, Dynamic Fitness also has dynamic pricing...$19.99/month. Jared says, “We have different bundles that include add-ons like childcare, personal training and tanning, but our base price is simple. by Amy Sharp Red River BBQ & Grill—co-owned and operated by brothers Kevin and Ric Kiersh— started in a BBQ trailer in College Station when Ric was at Texas A&M. “We would sell BBQ sandwiches and chips out of the trailer, and then we worked into catering...including several for Texas A&M University. Our goal was to open a restaurant in College Station, but we were young and didn’t have the financial means.”

After graduation Ric moved to Houston and went to work in commercial real estate. Kevin was playing college baseball. But after injury, he wanted to revisit the restaurant deal. Ric says, “My grandparents lived in League City, and we found a property for sale there. We opened the first Red River BBQ in 2002, Katy opened in 2011 and we have expansion plans for 2017.”

It goes without saying

and it’s worth repeating…

...a good lender is key to a successful real estate transaction. Amber Ferrell learned this first hand. “When my job transferred me to Texas, the real estate agent provided by the relocation company recommended Andrew Steinbrecher of Academy Mortgage Corporation in Katy. We talked and I liked him...but after several visits we decided to build instead.” Most new home builders have a preferred network of mortgage lenders, and will incentivize the client for using these lenders. “This was our first home, ” continues Amber. “We were out of state, and I’m compensated on a bonus structure...lots of complications. The first lender never ran our credit...just told us we weren’t a good fit. Lender #2 told us we were fine—perfect candidates. But months later when the house was nearly finished, they were nowhere to be found. The third lender couldn’t make the loan work either, and we were running out of time. I called Andrew to see if he could get me approved for the purchase. He made sure the loan got done and done quickly, so we could close on time. He’s amazing!” Andrew says, “I’ve worked for several banks, including the nation’s largest mortgage retailer. If you combined all of their mortgage product lines together, you would still not have the depth of product that Academy Mortgage Corporation offers. For Amber, I was able to pair her up with a non-repayable grant program we offer, and she successfully negotiated with the builder to allow their incentives to be applied to our transaction.” 12 ~ UPCLOSE Katy ~ June-July 2016

The Kiersh brothers credit their success to tried and true formulas, inspired by recipes found in family books. “The sauce is my grandfather’s recipe with our own little spin. The potato salad is my mom’s recipe. All of the sides are homemade...you won’t find any cans or boxes here!” And the BBQ? It’s eight different types of meat, all cooked in 100% wood-fired pits. And when you’re not hungry for BBQ, there’s hand-pressed burgers, mouth-watering steaks, fried shrimp, chicken-fried steak and so much more. Or try the Texas Hushpuppies... recognized by Houstonia Magazine as “Best Unique BBQ Entree” in the area. Enjoy an evening on the Red River covered patio with great food while the kids play in the sandbox. Or bring this fabulous flavor to your next party. “We cater everything from 10 person lunches to events of several thousand where we cook on-site. Just let us know what you need!” Ric and Kevin grew up in Sealy, TX. They can’t remember a time they didn’t know how to BBQ. “We just grew up doing it!” Stop in today and enjoy the true flavor of wood-smoked BBQ...the taste native Texans know and love!

No way! I would have rather spent months looking for another house than not use Andrew. He’s honest and he listens. I’m from South Carolina. Where I’m from, everyone knows who’s honest and who isn’t. Here I don’t even know what country I’m in half the time! I was extremely lucky to find an honest person like Andrew and he was absolutely getting my business.”

A Quarter Century of All-Natural Pizza!

R

by Amy Sharp

ay Salti, father of three boys, knows that no matter what you do...your kids are going to crave pizza. That’s one reason he founded the first Pepperoni’s back in 1990 as an old-style relaxed pizza parlor with a friendly and family-oriented atmosphere. Ray says, “I was concerned about the ingredients in the food my kids were eating...so I decided to go all-natural. Every Pepperoni’s pizza uses natural mozzarella cheese and premium tomatoes for the sauce. I believe food should taste good...and be good for you too!” Today, this pizza represents a quarter century of perfection! Now made with nonGMO untreated wheat flour, whether you’re in the mood for Veggie or All the Meats, there’s a variety of toppings to choose from, including traditional favorites like pepperoni and mushrooms to more eclectic choices like meatballs, eggplant, or artichoke hearts. And Ray understands that while most kids love

pizza, some do have diet restrictions. “Pepperoni’s happily accommodates our gluten-free guests by offering a gluten-free crust, as well as vegan cheese upon request. Everyone should get to enjoy great pizza!” Pepperoni’s also offers subs, salads, pastas, calzones, wings and desserts. The first location was such a great success that today there are 11 Pepperoni’s locations. Pearland is the most recent, there’s one coming up in the Medical Center and a planned Aliana store. Ray also owns the farm-to-table restaurant Ray’s Gourmet Country Grill in Fulshear and critically acclaimed Bollo Woodfired pizza in Upper Kirby. Ray says, “Whether you gather with friends and family for a casual meal, a fine dining experience, or order out for pizza...you deserve fresh, high-quality ingredients. It’s delicious food you’ll feel good about eating. Only the best was good enough for my boys...and only the best will do for you and your family too!” Order online at www.pepperonis.net...or you can always drop by or call your neighborhood location for this tasty Fort Bend original!

inding people you trust when you move to a new city is sometimes the hardest thing about moving. Stephanie and Shawn Foreman have been there. A relocation company found their first home in Katy and it was sufficient. When they decided they really wanted to put down roots they needed something much more personal. They didn’t want just any Realtor, they wanted someone who knew the area and would guide them with expertise. A friend of theirs recommended Paula Rucky and she was exactly what they needed. “She sold our existing house in several weeks.” The Foreman’s next home would be a new build. There are a lot of incentives and programs and Paula negotiates on your behalf. Stephanie says, “She’s quick to respond to concerns and stays on top of any issues. We actually backed out of a home because the builder was late to start and it would not be ready in time. Paula was instrumental in getting all of the money back we had put down.” A couple of months ago the Foreman’s decided to make Fulshear their new home. “I just like the smaller feel and smaller schools...we decided to build again.

Of course we called Paula. We took her recommendations to get our house ready to sell and used her ‘list’ of contractors for things that needed fixing. She staged our home beautifully and it sold in 72 hours! We know if anything goes wrong with this build Paula will be on top of it. We just can’t recommend her enough. She really takes care of you!” Paula has been in the real estate business since 1984. She’s spent more than 25 years watching and helping the Katy area grow. Paula says, “I don’t just work for you. I want to create a long term relationship with you. Contact me anytime. I would love to chat with you and answer any of your questions. I will help make your family’s dreams of a new home come true!”

“ I was sitting in traffic at I-10 and Mason Rd trying to think of what would make this bigger than anything. I decided I needed the biggest name in baseball on my team: The ‘Hit King’ Pete Rose.” ~ Hit King Baseball CEO Johnny Johnson

Hit King Baseball Academy is designed to develop young folks both on and off the field. “We’re not about trophies,” says Johnny Johnson. “Hit King partners Ryan Baker, Derek Hurley and I (pictured below) are about getting athletes to the next level, no matter what level they’re at right now. Some kids are just trying to make the Little League team while others are getting ready for pro scouts. We welcome all ages, all levels, both boys and girls. We take each individual to their personal next level. Come here to practice, develop and play. It’s baseball like it’s never been done before.” The very first Hit King Baseball Academy is opening right here in Katy this fall. The complex will host training camps, summer and fall teams, leagues and tournaments and train players ranging from age 5 to the college level. Pete Rose is a partner, an advisor, serves on the board and will be present at the facility at different times throughout the year...starting with opening weekend. “He’s excited about this!” says Johnny.
