ocal professional artist Albert Goldreich grew up very poor. “My family struggled,” says Albert, “but we never went without a meal. I did not grow up hungry. A long time ago, a teacher told me she had kids in her class that did not like public holidays because on those days, they did not eat. It breaks my heart to think of kids not looking forward to Labor Day or Memorial Day. Those were the best days when I was a kid...and it’s why I’m passionate about Empty Bowls!” Empty Bowls is an international project to fight hunger, personalized by artists and art organizations at the community level. Albert and other artists provide works of art for our very own Fort Bend Empty Bowls benefiting East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry. “What we do at East Fort Bend,” says Development Director Stacey Williams, “is address the basic human needs of families in our community in temporary financial crisis.” This is not your typical food pantry...the value of food distributed in 2018 was $1,072,126.73. In addition to the generous donations of individuals, churches and other groups, East Fort Bend receives regular orders of meat, eggs and fresh produce from area grocery stores. Families in temporary crisis can receive up to four full food orders in a year, or one supplemental order a week. And the kids? They are taken care of! Kid-centric “snack bags” are available and amped up on holidays and over the summer. For birthdays, families are provided a “Birthday Bag” containing everything they need to celebrate, including an ageappropriate toy and a cake! East Fort Bend also has a Financial Assistance Program, and its resale shop—Tri-City Church Resale Shop—was voted “Best in Fort Bend” by Fort Bend Focus readers. Stacey says, “Ninetytwo cents of every dollar donated goes directly to our programs.” None of this would be possible without the more than 1000 volunteers who give East Fort Bend their time each year. Virgil and Barbara Harris are among the most dedicated. Virgil has been volunteering every Tuesday for more than 20 years, and Barbara has been a volunteer

dward Major is Texan by choice. He moved to the Houston area with his wife and seven kids in 1971. He currently lives in Riverstone where he can be near four of his daughters. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Edward joined the United States Army and served during the Korean War. After the war, while earning his degree in engineering, Edward worked the night shift as an elevator operator at Bellevue Hospital. This is where he developed a sort of sixth sense about doctors. He says, “You can really get to know doctors during those rides.” So today, when Edward says, “I have great doctors,” he really means it. Four and a half years ago, when Edward’s legs became so swollen he couldn’t get his shoes on, his daughter suggested he see Dr. Ulises Baltazar. Dr. Baltazar is a highly regarded vein specialist. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting from issues of the circulatory system and is a leader in his field. Board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery, Dr. Baltazar is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency.

over the years. On my last checkup, Dr. Baltazar said, ‘How come your legs look so good?’ I told him I have always followed your original orders. I exercise and do the compression therapy every day.” Maintaining his health is a priority for Edward. Through the years he has carefully chosen the specialists that he works with. He follows their recommendations and exercises regularly. Edward says, “I am an 85 year old going on 65. My goal is to live to be 100; and according to my GP, I will. I give all the credit to my doctors at Methodist. They are all experts in their field and they communicate with each other. I am glad to have Dr. Baltazar as a part of my team.”

When Edward met Dr. Baltazar, he liked his warm and welcoming approach. Edward says, “Talking to Dr. Baltazar is like talking to your brother. He took the time to understand all of my medical issues. He let me know that I was not a candidate for surgery; that my swelling would best be controlled by compression therapy, and he was right. I got great results from the beginning and I have faithfully followed his advice

wo years ago, an Army veteran who grew up right here in Stafford was adamant about getting a job with the best plumbers in Fort Bend. “Erick Herrera must have called my mom (Jennifer) at least six times,” says Master Plumber Luke Burkhalter of Alan’s Plumbing. “She could not get rid of him. Finally she told him to stop by, and we put him on a truck. He never left.” Erick started a career in plumbing after a 13 year stint in the Army that ended when he got injured at the age of 31. His best friend Omar is the owner of Houston-based Tower Plumbing, a company that specializes in ground work and new construction. Luke says, “After leaving the Army, Erick thought plumbing might be a good fit...and he was right! This guy was dealt a rough hand in life, but he had a huge heart and he never showed hate. He was a joyful person, always looking on the bright side. Erick was full of energy and a super hard worker...probably the most passionate plumber I’ve ever met!” Everywhere the Alan’s crew went, they ran into someone that knew and loved Erick. “We would be in Home Depot,” says Luke, “and we couldn’t find him. He was always talking to someone! He was a crazy little guy, and everyone that knew him liked him. I had a blast working with Erick.” Erick was scheduled to test for his plumbing journeyman license this April. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be. He is missed dearly by his mother, whom he spoke with every day on the phone, and his siblings. The Alan’s Plumbing crew—including owner and Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter, his wife Jennifer, Master Plumber Chris Burkhalter, Master Plumber Luke Burkhalter, journeyman-licensed plumbers Beau Burkhalter and Jeff Johnson, and apprentices Jake Burkhalter, Jaime and Trevor—will miss his smiling face every single day. Rest in peace Erick.

THE ONE TO SEE

Glaucoma: The Silent

THIEF OF

SIGHT

B

by Amy Sharp

renda Frye is retired from the healthcare industry. Back in 1992, while still on the job, a health fair was held at the hospital where Brenda was working. She says, “Lighthouse for the Blind was there, and during a break we did some of the tests on ourselves. They told me the pressure in my eyes was extremely high. I have good eyesight...so we thought surely something was wrong with the machine. They brought in another machine and we got the same result. Turns out, I have glaucoma.”

Dr. Tom Arnold

Needing an eye doctor, Brenda turned to her neighbors. They overwhelmingly recommended Dr. Tom Arnold at Today’s Vision Sugar Land. Brenda says, “I knew right away Dr. Arnold would take care of me. He has an excellent bedside manner, and he really made me feel comfortable. I was really impressed. Glaucoma is a lifelong affliction. Dr. Arnold got right down to business and found what works for me and my glaucoma...which in my case is eye drops.” Glaucoma is sometimes called the “silent thief of sight” because it slowly damages the eyes and can cause irreparable harm before there are any symptoms or vision loss. Dr. Arnold says, “Glaucoma causes damage to your eye’s optic nerve. As Brenda learned, it is often linked to a buildup of pressure inside the eye. The increased pressure— called intraocular pressure—can damage the optic nerve, which transmits images to your brain. Without treatment, glaucoma can cause total permanent blindness within a few years. Brenda was very lucky to discover it accidentally. It’s easy to see why regular eye

checkups are so important, even when your vision seems fine!” Now retired, Brenda continues to serve our community. She volunteers with Sugar Land Municipal Court twice a week, and at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land once a week. She was the 2011 Volunteer of the Year for the City of Sugar Land, and is a past President of Auxiliary at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land. She also continues to see Dr. Arnold twice a year to monitor her glaucoma. “I’ve been seeing Dr. Arnold for more than twenty years now,” says Brenda. “When my life gets busy, he is very accommodating. He is also consistent in care. You need confidence in your attending physician, and that is exactly what Dr. Arnold provides. You only get two eyes, so it’s important to take care of them. I have recommended Dr. Arnold to many of my friends and acquaintances.” Today’s Vision Sugar Land 281-242-2020 15337 Southwest Freeway Sugar Land, TX 77478 www.2020sugarland.com

ife is better in 2019! How do we know? Before X-ray machines were invented, tooth problems were all diagnosed by physical examination and a doctor’s best guess. Just imagine living in 1875 and holding a basin under your chin while the local horse doctor extracts a rotting tooth. That’s quite a visual! But now as we near the end of our second decade of the 21st century, there’s an incredible machine that gives us a much better visual. It’s called the Planmeca ProMax 3D, and what it does better than any other machine is provide a crystal-clear 2D and 3D image of what’s going on inside your mouth, including possible deterioration of the jaw bone that holds your teeth. “We are really excited about offering the Planmeca ProMax 3D to our patients,” says Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. of Stafford, “especially since it gives us incredible resolution with a very low dose of radiation. It’s ideal for a wide range of treatments—anything from orthodontics or implant planning to maxillofacial surgery.” In fact, if you haven’t been to the dentist lately, you’d be astonished by all the advancements that have been made in the last fifteen years alone. Pain-free dentistry is not only possible, it’s the new normal. And all of these steps forward have been made possible by innovations like the Planmeca ProMax 3D...making your experience a safer, better one, and enabling your dentist to give you the best, most pain-free service possible. “Delaying dental treatment puts you at risk for more expensive and extensive dental work down the road,” says Dr. Lomonte. “Let’s take a look now and see what we’re dealing with. Then with the help of modern innovations like the Planmeca ProMax 3D, we can make some truly informed decisions about your teeth—no guesswork necessary. We have all the wonderful modern technology in the world to treat you with, and always promise to keep things as pain-free as possible. No matter what procedure you’re interested in, whether it’s a root canal, Come in porcelain veneers, dental implants or having a cavity filled...a Thomas M. Buy Chevy, Buy American, Buy Local

Happy 10th Anniversary Classic Chevy Sugar Land! SUGAR LAND

by Amy Sharp

T

here’s never been a better time to buy a new car...and there’s never been a more important time to think about where you spend your money. Do you want a car with a back seat big enough to take the neighborhood kids to a baseball game, or a compact car that makes your gas dollars go the extra mile? Whether you use your truck for fishing trips or your van to carpool to work...you need a vehicle you can trust, bought from an American company with over a hundred years of building amazing cars and trucks. Think back through your life...remember your favorite Chevy? Fort Bend community leaders and owners of Classic Chevy Sugar Land, Jeff and Tiffany Sebastian, say, “We asked Chevrolet drivers nationwide to vote on their favorite Chevy of all time. With choices like the Corvette Stingray, the Silverado, the Tahoe, and our best-selling small crossover, the Equinox, there was some heavy competition. Turns out, the winner of the Best Chevy of all time was the 1969 Camaro...but we’re also pushing to create your favorite car for this century!” And when it comes to Chevys, you can’t beat a Classic. For ten years and counting, Classic Chevy Sugar Land has remained committed to making your dollars deliver the best value for you. Jeff says, “We don’t advertise low prices that we can’t deliver. When you walk through the door, our sales

team is empowered to take you straight through your transaction, so you won’t have to sit through the hassles of haggling. We offer easyto-understand, competitive financing on our new and our pre-owned vehicles. And our GM Certified Vehicles receive a comprehensive and strict inspection, undergo a reconditioning process and come with a warranty…so you’ll have nothing to worry about whether you buy new or used from us.” What happens when you choose to buy an American-made car from a local dealership? Well, the experts will tell us that increasing demand at home improves the standard of living across the United States, provides better American job security, and gives us more control over the quality and responsibility of the methods of production. We don’t know about all of that, but we do know buying local means you’ll buy from people you know and can trust. The team at Classic Chevy Sugar Land has been a part of our community for ten years. Their kids go to school with our kids, they attend the same churches we do, and they give back to our community. Jeff says, “At the end of the day, we at Classic Chevy Sugar Land are your friends and neighbors...and we want you to know that Classic cares. We’re proud to support the local schools, sports teams, and service organizations that make our community strong. Ten years is only the beginning...we’re not going anywhere!”

Save Time on Spring Cleaning

T

by Marie Page he birds are singing and everyone is busy spring cleaning. Dad’s clearing out the garage, the kids are organizing their closets and mom has pails of soapy water, mops and sponges as far as the eye can see. Wait, this doesn’t sound like your house? We all know these jobs will never get started--much less finished. So stop the madness and turn it over to the professionals! Imelda and Casandra Mahoney of Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services say,

“Every day is ‘spring cleaning day’ for us. Give us a call...that way you (and your family) can relax and enjoy your time together.” After all, it would be a shame to spend the best weather in Texas inside scrubbing and scouring. Besides, even the most willing family members don’t have the serious cleaning skills of the professionals...and let’s face it, your kids are probably not thrilled to be “volun-told” to spend their free time cleaning anyway. Every team from Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services is bonded and insured, has undergone thorough background checks, and arrives in a clearly-labeled company car...so you can have complete confidence. They can do the cleaning of course, but are also willing to pick up the other jobs like organizing. You just have to ask! Pack up a picnic and take the kids to the park without any guilt at all. Your Mahoney’s team will make your house super-sparkly clean. Enjoy “spring cleaning” like never before, with the help of Fort Bend’s favorite cleaning service. You’ll love their professionalism, your spotless home, and spending free time with your family again!

Imelda’s Insight Save a few minutes on cleaning in the evening and enjoy more time reading a bedtime book with your kids or catching up with your spouse. Imelda says, “Before you sit down to dinner, fill your sink with hot soapy water. Add any used pans or dirty utensils and let them soak while you eat. Have the kids ‘bus’ their own plates and wipe down their spot at the table. Then it’s a cinch to load the dishwasher and wipe, rinse and dry your pots for a clean kitchen...quickly!”

he next time you start yearning for the “good old days,” just stop running your air conditioner for a few minutes. Talk about instant perspective! The truth is, those of us who are lucky enough to live in hot, sunny, muggy, southeastern Texas have learned how to sprint from one climate-controlled space to another. Without air conditioning, we’d all melt like ice cream on a sidewalk. But what happens when bit by bit, your air conditioner stops working? How do you know if it’s just particularly hot outside, or if there’s something else that might be going wrong? Brian Jackson of Jackson Air and Heat, Sugar Land’s oldest Trane Comfort Specialist, can help you figure out why your air conditioner isn’t blowing cold anymore. hen Barbara and Mike Hosford wanted to install porcelain tile that looks like wood throughout their downstairs, Barbara shopped around for tile. “I found what I wanted,” says Barbara, “and went to the tile manufacturer’s website. I clicked ‘Resources’ and discovered local Lone Star Floors carried it.” The Hosfords called Lone Star Floors for a quote. Salesperson Mark accommodated them by stopping at their house on his way home from work one Friday afternoon. Barbara says, “Mark came in, measured, and gave us a quote right there. He was very helpful. We already had a few other quotes, and we felt Mark’s number was good...a good price. We were also very happy with Mark himself and the information he was providing. We felt Lone Star Floors was a good company to go with.” Barbara describes the installers that came to her home as very personable, friendly and helpful. “Since we were flooring most of the

downstairs—all of it except for the master bathroom— we moved upstairs. But we have two big dogs that needed to go out periodically. Our Lone Star crew was very conscientious, and would stop everything so I could get out to walk the dogs. They were also very good at communicating. Each day I was informed of what was done, and what was planned for tomorrow. They told me which sections we could walk on, which sections we couldn’t, and always left a path to the door for us and the dogs. At the end of each day, they also cleaned up. There was never any trash left around.” Locally owned by cousins Mohamed Naser, Ziad Mukhaimer, and Imad Mansour, Lone Star Floors has been in business for more than 30 years. “I am very impressed with their work,” says Barbara. “Our new floors are beautiful and the installation was done very well. This is a long home, so straight lines and following the lines of the walls was important. I’m very, very pleased with our finished floors. I highly recommend Lone Star Floors. I give them five stars out of five!”

ack when Highway 6 had only two lanes and Town Square did not exist, Corelli’s Italian Cafe opened its doors in Highland Square (you know the place... Half Price Books, Shipley’s, and of course... Corelli’s). This made-from-scratch Italian is so popular, the neighborhood regulars have their “days.” General Manager Sean Kennedy says, “We have Thursday night people, Saturday night people, Sunday evening people, etc.” What makes it so good? This restaurant has stayed true to who they are. “Way back when,” says Sean, “our recipes were created through extensive research in Little Italy. We wanted to be as authentic as possible. That means we have no freezer. Everything is fresh and made when you order it...and 80% of that original menu is still served today.” Families and friends gather here for fabulous entrees like the mouthwatering lasagna and the ever-popular pork chop. And don’t forget dessert. This cheesecake and tiramisu is some of the best in Houston. Wine and beer are both available, or bring your favorite bottle of wine for a small corkage fee. N

o one understands the importance of convenient care that’s top-notch as much as a mom. Imagine a dentist office that takes care of everything for your entire family? That’s just what Jasmine Naderi, D.D.S. has created at Best Dental. Dr. Naderi’s story starts in nearby Cypress, where she grew up wanting to be a medical doctor. She says, “I was at the University of Houston doing my undergrad, and I was volunteering at a hospital. I just didn’t like it. When I visited my longtime dentist, I explained all of this to him. I wondered what I could do with all the sciences I had already taken. My dentist was like an uncle to me, and he took me to visit the dental school where he taught. I started volunteering there, and realized it was exactly what I wanted to do.” Dr. Naderi finished her undergrad as a dental major and when on to graduate from the University of Texas Dental Branch in 2002. For more than 16 years, Dr. Naderi has practiced dentistry in Sugar Land. This year, on her birthday, Dr. Naderi opened her own practice on the Grand Parkway at Bellaire in Richmond. General dentistry, braces and aesthetics are all in the realm of what Dr. Naderi takes care of at Best Dental. Her brother, Sanjar Naderi D.D.S, completes the practice with surgical care—including wisdom teeth, implants and root canals. Dr. Naderi says, “I wanted to create a practice that takes care of everything for a family. I know how difficult it can be to run multiple places for dental treatment. Here at Best Dental, I can see and treat the entire family—all ages. For surgical needs, we have a surgical room in the office. We take

care of as much as we can, only referring out when a specialist is required.” When she’s not helping clients with their smiles, Dr. Naderi stays busy keeping up with her two boys. Both Kameron and Joseph play basketball for Austin High School. She is also very involved with Hope City Church, and a member of a local Women for Women networking community where independent business women support each other. Dr. Naderi plans to stay in this area for a long time. “I moved here when there were a lot of corn fields around! I love how this area has grown, and everything is close by. Before living here, I did not know that neighbors could be friends. I love the people, the sense of community, and the schools. My kids are very happy here!” To schedule an appointment with Dr. Naderi, visit www.bestdentistinhouston.com or call 281-343-3011. hen Randy Risher was looking for a new boat back in 2016, a friend referred him to El Pescador Boats. Randy says, “On a whim, I called the owner Dave Kveton one cold Saturday after duck hunting. Dave was in Port O’Connor, and I happened to be in

Port O’Connor too. Dave suggested we meet at the fishing center and take the boat out for a ride that same day.” From that very first ride, Randy became a big fan of both El Pescador Boats and Dave. “I was so impressed,” says Randy. “I purchased a 24’ cat. It met all of my needs. I entertain a lot of my business customers with fishing trips to Port O’Connor, and many of

them have fished before. Like me, they are always impressed with the way the El Pescador feels and handles. It fishes a lot of people, it performs well, and it’s fast. Most impressive is how dry my El Pescador stays in rough water. I can run 2 foot chop and it handles very well...I’m not drenching myself and my customers! run shallow…I thought I would need the skiff to get to all of the places I wanted to go. I ended up selling it. The El Pescador can handle everything I need.” What El Pescador Boats offers is the fastest catamaran hull (cat hull) shallow water boat in its class. The hull is constructed with the most up-to-date composite available, no wood! It runs shallow, comes up shallow, and as Randy found, it’s an extremely dry and comfortable ride. These cats are custom built to your specifications. Choose your Evinrude E-TEC G2, pick a color (or two!)...then outfit as you wish. Randy liked his first boat so much, he bought an updated El Pescador 24’ cat two years later. “In my opinion,” says Randy, “these are the best boats on the Gulf Coast. They’re great for me, a sport fisherman that goes out 30 or 40 times a year, and they are great for the professionals. Dave’s a professional fishing guide, and he’s also the most ethical, stand-up guy you are ever going to meet. When he tells you something, you can take it to the bank. Anytime I have a question or something needs tweaking on my boat, Dave is on it. As a small business owner myself, that means a lot to me.” At The Risher Companies, Randy provides integrated fitness services, equipment and solutions. Clients include health clubs and studios, corporate/office fitness centers, universities and schools, master-planned communities, hotels and country clubs. NEW SEASON In a

A

fter the tragic death of Pastor Phil Lineberger back in 2015, Sugar Land Baptist Church entered a hard season. Senior Pastor Dr. Taylor Sandlin says, “Phil’s death was tragic, and the sorrow that followed also made for a challenging time for our congregation. By God’s grace, the church came together to minister to one another through what became a transitional season of grief and healing.” For Sugar Land Baptist Church, this period of healing is giving way to a new season of ministry and mission. Taylor arrived two years ago this Easter. Taylor says, “There is a myth that bad things don’t happen to Christians. The truth is, Christians are not immune

to problems. We all have struggles and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. This church has shown resilience during difficult days. We never want to pretend we didn’t walk through what happened, but we also find it’s ok to start looking forward to what’s ahead. We believe God excels in redemption stories. Our church is a living example of how God can bring new life after heartache.” “The vast majority of ministry that happens in our church, happens because our church members make it happen,” continues Taylor. “I firmly believe you find meaning in life when you find a way to serve others.” The new team at Sugar Land Baptist Church includes Executive Pastor, Jeff Moran; Associate Pastor of Education & Discipleship, Davey Gibson; Associate Pastor of

Worship & Arts, Clint Kimmel; Associate Pastor of Students, Katie Mussat; Associate Pastor of Preschool & Children, Amy Sims; and Associate Pastor of Missions, Alena Vaughn. “Our ministry team is dedicated to helping you discover your gifts and where you can use them. When you serve others, you discover God’s presence. We invite all of you to our Sunday service or one of our ministries. This is an exciting time for our church.” And Taylor? He hails from Texarkana, TX where he preached his first sermon at age 16. “I’m sure that sermon wasn’t great,” Taylor recalls, “but it allowed my childhood pastor an evening off and was a wonderful opportunity for me to discover my calling.” Taylor met his wife Alyson at Texas A&M where he was very active in Baptist Student Ministry. He went on to receive several advanced degrees from Baylor. Taylor, Alyson, Sophie and John Curtis are loving life in Sugar Land. Alyson teaches 1st grade in LCISD. Sophie has found a dance home at BalletForte, and John Curtis swims for his neighborhood team. Taylor says, “In reality, we are just a normal family trying to keep up with the activities of two kids who do not yet have a driver’s license. Our family would love to meet your family this week!”

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS, DOCTOR OF CHIROPRACTIC WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

Back to the Future

by Sara Adams

ayana Rodriguez has her hands full. She has a threeyear-old daughter, works full-time and is also attending the University of Houston. It takes careful planning and determination to keep her busy schedule running smoothly. Last year, on her way to work, Dayana’s routine got thrown for a loop. Her car was hit from behind and forced into the car in front of her. The impact from being sandwiched between two cars caused Dayana to experience a double whiplash as a result of the wreck. Although a cat scan performed right after the accident indicated there was no permanent damage, Dayana began to experience headaches and pain in her neck two days later. She says she also felt extreme fatigue and had a hard time concentrating. That’s when her dad recommended she see his chiropractor, Dr. Steve Harris. Dr. Harris offers a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with chronic pain or to help improve their overall musculoskeletal function and health. Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982, and has been in practice for over 40 years. Known for incorporating new technology and techniques that complement his safe and holistic approach, Dr. Harris offers gentle chiropractic care. Through his years as a chiropractor, Dr. Harris has developed his own methods and treatments for every layer of the body to promote healing. His natural, non invasive, gentle approach promotes relief from pain. Grateful that her dad suggested she see Dr. Harris, Dayana had this to say, “Dr. Harris and his staff are all so very friendly and extremely caring. From the moment I stepped in the door on my first visit, they were all very warm and welcoming. Coming from my background of 5+ years in customer service, they go above and beyond for all of their patients and will do whatever it takes to get any and all of their patients back on their feet in full health. I would highly, highly recommend Dr. Harris; after suffering two car accidents this year and a pre-existing back injury that I had no knowledge about, I highly praise his

patience, service, and dedication to each of his patients.” After working with Dr. Harris, Dayana reports that her energy is up, she has no neck tension or headaches, and she can keep up the original pace she maintained before her accident. Dayana says, “Thank God for Dr. Harris; for what he does and how he changes lives.”
