MONATE: Today we are discussing what it takes to be successful

MONATE: Where was the equipment that you bought during the year when you were unemployed?

RAY: To all viewers and listeners, I am the founder and CEO of Cfyslens Media, it is a media company, we do photography and video. I used to work in IT and before I started working in IT, I came from a South American country and I was brought here to work in IT, because of the language I speak, Dutch, that is my mother tongue.

RAY: In that year, I had to sell all that equipment and the only thing I kept was a gas cylinder. I also kept a camera which my wife had bought for me for the purpose of making a food magazine, which I am still going to do. I learnt to look at what I have around me and try to use it to generate income and the first thing I looked at was a camera.

RAY: It did not end there for me, I did not want to be like an average person, working for a boss. When working for somebody, you are building their dream (my opinion), even if the company could make millions, you do not have any to give to your family and grandchildren. RAY: That is where the hunger to establish something of my own began. It may seem that I rushed straight into photography, but I did not, I started as a cook, working for a marinade company. Due to the unavailability of the marinade in South Africa, I created my own and decided to sell it. Former colleagues tried talking me down, but I took their negativity and flipped it to positivity and excelled. RAY: I came up with a label, that is where graphic designing started, but could not get anyone to help me design a logo. I then looked it up on the internet, and that is when I stumbled upon Photoshop for the first time with several trial and errors and three months later.

RAY: I had no experience in photography, but a bit of experience in graphic design since I had found a way to design my own logo. I put an ad on Gumtree as a professional photographer but that did not cut it. I met a total stranger who introduced me to her friend, and we did a rooftop shoot. Filming started to pick up from there and two years later, I got my first attempt to shoot for a wedding and the pictures were average looking compared to my current standards. My computer crashed, I had lost the pictures and had to teach myself how to recover files from a hard drive and I was able to recover the pictures and I thank God that till today we are still friends.

UPCOMING MAG’S Live

MONATE: So, this is happening while you have not sent them their pictures.

RAY: Yes. I got another chance to shoot in two weddings and the second time, it was a INTERVIEW WITH success. From there onwards, I started to work RAY on quality instead of quantity and turn people’s negative remarks into positive. I decided to merge my IT and graphic design skills and A Facebook page exists but I am currently focused on got a job to design a website for a cosmetic business, Cfyslens Media, a reboot is coming soon but for now I am which generated income. I again looked up on the just writing new recipes for marinades. internet, basics of photography and I used those to do the RAY: A few years later I had a marinade that was bottled, product shoot and it was a success. labelled, and had a barcode and expiry date, the same RAY: A year later, I made a dedication towards getting people who were talking me down, were now buying my better equipment, four months into it I got a new camera product. and started looking at my weaknesses and upgraded. RAY: In 2014, I resigned and opened a food corner in From there I started looking at Photoshop, and I came Sandton, I made a lot of mistakes due to my lack of across Light Room, after that I discovered that I could knowledge of how to run a business, with a wife and use both. The most recent thing I have learned is the air children to take care of and in had to pay rent. I had brush, I can take a picture of a high quality and remove invested so much in the food corner but sadly, the owner all the blemishes and I am still trying to upskill myself, of the property had kicked us out, then I could not keep especially during this lockdown. the food stand operating, so I had to quit. For a year I did RAY: When I receive critics, I try to examine whether it not receive any income, I thank my wife who was able to is a valid point or not, if it is valid, I try to make provide when I could not. improvements. RAY: Every day, I would wake up and try to figure out what to do to earn an income, I occasionally worked in a UPCOMING MAG 18 cyber stand, 9-hour shifts with no breaks for a year.

RAY: I got a chance to shoot at the Samsung S20 launch, I shot for companies like Huawei and a few others I cannot mention. My journey to success has taught me the following, be determined, do not get offended by critics and be able to build yourself from all the insults. I had a conversation with a model one, she got offended say that people always have opinions about her and I said it does not make any sense to continue those conversations, because those people do not understand where you come from. RAY: If you want to be a model, I can tell you one thing, the directors and producers can be mean, especially when in paid photoshoot where deadlines have to be met, directors get irritated when a model or actor does not deliver. When you want to be successful you need to prioritise work time and continuously upskill yourself, if you are a model find ways to maintain and upgrade your looks. A successful person does not have one source of income. MONATE: You went to YouTube to find out ways in which to better your skills, which is something which most people do not consider. Information is out there; I have also done the same to better my skills. RAY: One aspect of being successful is being humble and so not be ashamed to as somebody for help. Know what you already have and what you still need to get. Busang and Pampidi are two photographers that I look up to, I have not met them in person, but I have spoken to them over the phone. I feel motivated by them and I want to be on their level. MONATE: If there are any models who would like to work with you, how can they get in touch with you. RAY: They can send direct messages on my Instagram page, Facebook, my WhatsApp number is available on the pages. Currently I am not looking for somebody to work with, but if you want to ask any questions feel free to reach out.

MONATE: To get your opinion, what can models protect themselves from scammers? RAY: Any jobs available for models, the job needs to have a contract ready and printed with a letterhead and company registration details before the model can produce any content, so that if something is to happen, the model can report. As a model, legitimate photographer will pay you, any audition that requires you to pay is not a good one, unless you are signing up for a competition. Nude and lingerie are options, opt for locations which are disclosed and do not go unaccompanied. This Interview was held live on Instagram

DESTINED FOR GREATNESS Nobody was born great or successful. We all have what it takes to be great or successful in our own capacity. Those who are ‘seemingly‘ great, didn't just wake up great, they went through trials and challenges and probably fought battles we know nothing about. No one automatically has their name on the top, but we are all given an opportunity to put our names on the top. Question is how hungry are you? How thirsty are? We all have greatness unlimited within us. You might not be where you ought to be or where you want to be but being somewhere is better than being nowhere. So, start travelling in the path of your deepest dreams. Break the cage of any limitations and rise above what people have labelled you. Nobody has the power to dictate your destiny besides you.

Everything that was designed to destroy you can be redirected to your destiny. You are the architect of your life; how do you want it to be? How will you shape your destiny? You are already destined for greatness; it is Already certified but it is now up to you to put the final stamp and become everything you're meant to be. There is a seed of greatness inside you, will you nurture it or let it die inside? Will you excuse excuses and reject rejection, or will you throw in the towel just like the rest? Remember you were put on this earth for a special purpose so discover that purpose and achieve your greatest self.

We received several messages from people in this group saying some of the models we work with are selling during this time we received a message from you showing us screen shots taken from the woman who is said to be selling models to Nigerians, Throughout our work with Mathapelo we know her as a respectable model who takes pride in her career. In my chat with her she was shocked and said she has no idea what is going on all she saw was a screen shot off her picture with R900 per night as a caption. We conducted this interview to understand what is going on. What is your relationship with her? No relationship between us

Who is Sibongile? The girl I once met at the isibaya shoot How do you know her? We met at a shoot What is your story with what happened?

Your final thoughts and emotions towards this?

I had no data and just got surprised when I saw what she posted after I got data I was so shocked and scared for my life because I knew nothing about what she had posted I was angry sad and mad at once I texted her and asked what's happening she said to me she was scammed and all her story had no sense because one minute she would say "you know I am a fun person I love jokes bluh bluh I then told her I didn’t like what she did and then decided to block her

I am still scared and worried Because I deleted and blocked her but I am not sure if she stopped posting my pics with silly captions like R900 per night I want justice and I can go through anything just to remove my name from this trashy things and all other models or girls I can't be sold I am a model not a prostitute nor some sex worker.

MONATE: Who is Ms. Africa? MS. AFRICA: I am Riany Van der Merwe, from Eldorado Park and I entered the pageant in 2018 at the age of 30. I grew up in Kliptown, I was adopted, I moved to Eldorado Park after being adopted and ever since then life went on. I faced a lot of challenges, I often had suicidal thoughts for some time and entering the pageant has changed my life positively and it was part of finding the woman I am. I am a Tourism graduate, I studied Information Technology (IT) for a while as well as Business and Finance and I have a certificate in Biblical Studies. MONATE: Out of all the contestants who participated in the Ms. Africa pageant, what do you think you did differently which led to you winning? MS. AFRICA: It was confidence, I just went out there as myself and not trying to be somebody else, I was comfortable with my skin. Even though there were a lot of contestants, over 50 ladies participated but I knew that I was one of a kind, the strength I had, that I was enough for myself and that I was doing it not only for myself but for all the ladies out there. For me, it was more personal than anything else.

MONATE: From the Ms. Africa competition, what prizes did you win MS. AFRICA: Ms. Africa was more of a charity competition, unlike Ms. South Africa, all the money made was donated to underprivileged countries like the DRC. This is to help save women with diseases such goitre, which costs a lot of money to remove, and getting sanitary pads and schoolbags for children. The whole aim of the competition is to give back to communities. MONATE: What came with the title of being Ms. Africa? MS. AFRICA: A lot of responsibility, including doing a lot of charity work, I did one event in a rugby stadium where UJ was playing against another team, I was there to provide motivational talks. I had another one with Autism children in Ennerdale, so I go to different communities, it does not matter how far since I am also investing in myself in the process. I must give a monthly report back, as to what I have done or achieved in the community or region. So, with Geovanni working as my marketing director, he finds me homes to go and currently we are working to get schools involved.

LIVE INTERVIEW WITH

MISS AFRICA

MONATE: Most people do not consider modelling as a career. Considering the title that you have; do you think that modelling is something an individual pursue as a career and make a living off it alone? MS. AFRICA: Yes, depending on how an individual perceives it. For me, considering that I have been working in the Hospitality industry ever since I started working, I have worked overseas (in the Middle East) then returned home, and began with pageantry. I found out that it was challenging because most people view females in pageantry as being “cheap, but if one is considering taking it as a career, think it will work out. I did not consider modelling as a career because I have a career that I am following. I have always wanted to be an active contributor towards my community, and I found that pageantry is a perfect starting point.

MONATE: Is there any charity event that you are planning with an exact date which we can probably work with? MS. AFRICA: I started a small group where women and children speak about what they have been through, giving children development skills and how to handle the corporate life, I am in contact with a massage company which is part of how young people can start making money and be creative. We started Ms. Protea Glen as well, which is on hold due to the pandemic, we are teaching the children and giving them confidence to go out there to approach companies and also about applying for bursaries and studying further to give them an advantage.

MONATE: Are entries still open for the Ms. Protea Glen competition? MS. AFRICA: Entries are still opened. For now, people can go to the West Clothing Brand website, or contact me on WhatsApp, Facebook, or Instagram, I will be able to provide them with more information.

MONATE: For someone who would like to be the next Ms. Africa, how can they join the pageant, when are registrations opened and what is the procedure to become a contestant for Ms. Africa. MS. AFRICA: There application forms available on the Africa Pageants website, you will receive and email, you will send your pictures sometimes they take the pictures, you will do an interview just like any other pageantry and after a month you will be notified whether you eligible to be one of the finalists. Applications are still opened.

MONATE: Is there anything that a model has that will prevent them from entering the pageant, such as tattoos or gold teeth? MS. AFRICA: Obviously, tattoos are not allowed in that, unless there positioned where they are always completely hidden, and gold teeth are not a problem. In the Ms. Africa pageant, they do not check for all those things checked in the Ms. South Africa pageant or any other competition, even if you are married or short you can still participate in Ms. Africa.

MONATE: How can you advise women to boost or build their confidence? MS. AFRICA: You do not need anybody’s approval, embrace who you are, do not be afraid of taking risks, know that your mistakes do not define you but instead should help you redefine yourself to become who you want to be. With every step taken, you learn a lesson, if you fall, you get up, then greatness will follow.

MONATE: Is there anything else you would like to share? MS. AFRICA: I would like to say go to the West Brand Productions website, check what we are up to, be part of it, come and join us and you will not regret that decision. Wake up in the morning and strive to be the best version of yourself. UPCOMING MAG 67

Song review I am an African by Mmabore Lyrics: I might not have a doctorate but I have my own talents have my own gifts Uuuh yeah I am not a famous celebrity But I love myself No need to bleach my skin And my hair is natural Look at me This is true African art No matter how dark or light I am a true African No fat cheque account I don't need a blesser I am African I love my life So simple, affordable and easy Uuuh yeah I am an African Ooh this is me I am an African Proud of who I am And my roots Ooh this is me

Never been to Hollywood Never been to Paris But my country Is the best and offers all If you want to know Come and see Africa I am not dating a tycoon A simple guy from around Who grew up Herding goats and cows And yes He can't play chess The honeymoon won't be in Mauritius Will be right here In this thatched roof hut Drinking water from Semene river Eating wild fruits Watching trees, lizards and monkeys Ke moAfrika Oooh ke nna yo Ke moAfrika Ke itlotla ka seo Le setlogo saka Ooh ke Nna yo

We still working on a system to select the song to review every month for now we Used a first come first serve policy and Mmabore was the first Comer. Before I get into the review I would like to tell you that music is like daily affirmation, when you love a song you sing along affirming what the song is about to your life, stand guard at the door of your mind, be careful what you let into your subconscious. Back to the review, can someone get me up to speed, is the latest trend in music 2min songs, This is the second song I am reviewing which is about two minutes long, I am happy to review this song because we just celebrated Africa day on the 27th of May, I am an Africa is a lovely positive up beat song which lifts me up because I can relate to it, but for me the song is not all positive because I want to be a famous celebrity so singing I am not a famous celebrity will stop me from being one, I want a fat cheque account so I cannot sing along when the song gets there, but overall I love the song and I give it 3 out of 5 vinyl’s
