August 1, 2016 Indie Designer’s Slow Dance with American Couture Sarai Capael believes in slow fashion. An American designer with a background in both literature and architecture, Capael has taken her time to bring her series of collections to light. Each of the pieces in her four collections is a made-to-measure garment with many layers and intricate patterning. The work is a fruit of a long-term collaboration between Capael and Chicago costume designer and professional tailor, [ Eat Your Wristwatch ]. With four micro-collections and a jewelry line, Sarai Capael aspires to introduce no more than four pieces each spring and fall. Inspired by the austerity of a college professor who wore only one tweed ensemble, a skirt, jacket, top and pants in a dozen variants, Capael reduces her collections to the barest essentials, evoking the locally-grown and hand-tailored traditions of the early 20th-century. Each Sarai Capael design will be made-to-measure such that when one purchases a piece, that individual becomes a client and the design becomes a custom collaboration. Capael’s collections take inspiration from contemporary architecture, the geometric lattice-work of rust-belt bridges, Etruscan repetitional striations, LA moderne, and western Victoriana fashions. Her roots in the northwest can be seen in her newest collection, “Lake Louise,” in which she explores colors and lines reimiscent of Canadian mounty uniforms - or the lines of water rippling on an inland lake in the summer. “I used to experiment with modularity and deconstruction, wherein a piece would work in multiple ways, but now I think that the design has it’s own inherent logic and when a piece is right, and immaculately built, it becomes timeless and pragmatism takes a bow.”

DESIGNER BIO SARAI CAPAEL LAUNCHED HER FIRST COLLECTION IN CHICAGO, 2005 Her pieces were part of a design program she was taking at night at the School Of The Art Institute In Chicago. With the partnership of a pattern-maker and a smattering of interns, Capael opened an atelier studio in the infamous Fine Arts Building of Chicago’s Michigan Avenue. After doing a few shows in Chicago, one with John Fluevog, Capael decided to pack up for Boston and complete her design studies formally as a Masters of Architecture Candidate. While in Boston, she stealth audited classes at Harvard, MIT And Yale - enrolling at Harvard for a summer Studio. Once she learned the ropes, it was off to NYC and more night classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology. There she learned about the business of fashion and how to launch a collection and approach stores. She kept in touch with her pattern-maker and continuted to collaborate on the intricate designs which Capael acknowledges have an architectural complexity to them. “The pieces are meant to remind the woman wearing them of her amor de soi or self-love.” Working as an architectural illustrator by day, her collections took a back seat for a few years and she steadily produced a small collection every two years, in keeping with the european atlier tradition.
