It gives me great pleasure to pay tribute to you, our donors. Your support makes a difference to UPEI students daily—their UPEI experience is extraordinary largely because of you. On your behalf, we—as faculty and staff—spend a lot of time with the students, and we continue to be inspired by their creativity, energy, and enthusiasm. Our students are involved in producing, interpreting, disseminating, and understanding the knowledge they receive as part of their UPEI education. Regardless of your level of support, you’ve had a direct impact on the student experience at UPEI. Collectively, we received the greatest amount of donations this past fiscal year than ever in our institution’s history—over $7.4 million—and it’s evident. In 2011/12, UPEI enjoyed its highest student enrolment, number of graduating students, and intake of research funding. Throughout the year, students combined quality learning and personal success in national and international case competitions sharing and gaining knowledge while solving real-world business challenges. The Panthers soared with more than 50 athletes achieving Academic All-Canadian status and 8 teams competing in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) playoffs. The Annual Fund Campaign continues to grow with a record $208,000 raised in fiscal year 2011/12. More than 46 graduates from the Class of 2011 contributed to the campaign matched in dollars by alumnus Glen J. Macdonald, BA’71, in honour of his milestone reunion year. In total, UPEI gained over 480 donors this year. Over 20 new awards were created, 10 loyal donors moved into our 20+ consecutive years of giving category, and an additional 5 donors planned a future estate gift to UPEI.

The Executive MBA program provides students with theory, skills, experiential learning, and research opportunities, offering specialized streams of study in Biotechnology Management & Entrepreneurship as well as Innovative Management. In 2011, the family of H. Wade MacLauchlan made a leadership gift to the University to create a substantial program of awards to encourage and recognize writing excellence. The MacLauchlan Prizes for Effective Writing honour Wade MacLauchlan’s twelve years of service as UPEI president and recognizes the importance of effective writing as a foundational skill for academic success and lifelong learning. In what was said to be “ the most spirited New Student Orientation week ever at UPEI,” new students raised a

july Summer Reunion Weekend is a great opportunity to reconnect with old classmates through fun and engaging activities. The always-popular UPEI Alumni HRA Panther Classic golf tournament took place during the 2011 reunion weekend with 145 participants teeing off. Link to website

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)
awarded 10 UPEI scientists with highly competitive research funding. NSERC announced more than $1.2 million in funding which covered the purchase of a scanning electron microscope, plus research costs for 10 researchers over the next five years. Read more

record-breaking total of $32,609 for Shinerama, a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis. UPEI first-year student, Kaitlyn Parks, was the top online fundraiser in the country raising $2,247. Read more
Traditionally, the University holds a number of homecomingstyle, open-house events during September for Celebrate UPEI weekend. This year’s weekend welcomed back hundreds of alumni and added even more activities to a jam-packed schedule. From a myriad of varsity games, to AVC Open House, to community-partnered events, to the Panther Pace 5K Run, there was something for everyone. Link to website

A new annual award was established by UPEI alumnus Paul "Ryan" Pineau, '05 to recognize a graduating student who excelled in an accounting course specific to income taxation.
Maclean's 21st edition of their annual ranking of 49 Canadian universities was published in October. UPEI moved four spots from eighth position to rank
fourth overall among 'primarily undergraduate' universities. The climb was due in large part to UPEI's strong showing in the ‘student awards’ and ‘total research dollars’ categories. Read more

Michael van den Heuvel, UPEI’s Canada Research Chair in Watershed Ecological Integrity, was awarded funding by the Canadian Water Network and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to construct a long-term monitoring program in the watersheds in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence, including the Northumberland Strait. UPEI celebrated the launch of BioVOS, a new contract research company based partly on UPEI technology. Bio-valuation Outsourcing Solution provides services to the pharmaceutical industry to test new drugs and treatments for neuro-inflammatory, metabolic, and cardiovascular disorders, including stroke and heart disease. Fiona Walton, Professor of Education at UPEI (second from left) was awarded a 2012 3M National Teaching Fellowship, bringing UPEI’s total of 3M Teaching Fellows to five, the highest per capita in the country. The UPEI men's hockey team played their final season game at Credit Union Place in Summerside, as part of Scotiabank's Hockey Day in Canada. This marked the first time in the 12-year history of the CBC event that it was held in PEI. Read more

UPEI's women's hockey team made history on March 4 during the AUS Championship in Halifax, NS. The team thrilled fans when they downed the Mount Allison Mounties 3-0 to claim their first-ever AUS hockey banner. Read more
march UPEI head coaches, Bruce Donaldson (left) of the women’s hockey team, and Tim Kendrick (right) of the men’s basketball team, were each awarded AUS coach of the year for their leadership. Donaldson led the Panthers to a first-ever AUS banner and spot at the CIS championship, while Kendrick guided the Panthers to a third-place finish in the Atlantic conference.
Second- and third-year engineering students displayed their design skills at the annual UPEI Engineering Design Expo and Awards ceremony held on April 19. The Expo challenged students to provide real-life solutions for their clients' specific issues. Read more

UPEI's Climate Change Unit hosted a symposium sponsored by the province of Prince Edward Island, the government of Canada, and UPEI. The conference featured the results from PEI's climate-change adaptation efforts, a report on climate changes that have occurred on PEI over the past 50–100 years, and projections of anticipated climate changes. To the delight of everyone present—children and adults alike—Adriana Nielsen prepares to release a snowy owl, following its recovery at the Atlantic Veterinary College. Each year, more than 6,000 animals, including wildlife, receive expert care at AVC’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital, the only full-service veterinary referral hospital in Atlantic Canada.
