n 1991, retired school teacher Pat Furr began Computers for Classrooms from a spare room in her home. Her idea was that every student should have access to computers, no matter their school’s budget.

grateful to school and feel that it is very important that everyone have access to a good education,” Pat says.

When the computer was set up she got really excited and ran across the room. She said one word: computer. Her teacher was in complete shock because they didn’t think she could talk.”

In 1991, Pat says they didn’t

“Right now that means having have one principal who knew a computer. The likelihood of how to use email. dropping out is much higher without the use of computers.” Since its origin, CFC has placed 5,000 computer systems per year, totaling tens of thousands of working, guaranteed systems and has expanded to a 25,000-square-foot facility with pallet racking, loading docks and its own 26-foot box van. Donations have filled the space with endless boxes of computer pieces. From wires to hard drives to keyboards to screens, Computers for Classrooms has it all. For many students, access to computers is thrilling, particularly for those who have never had one. They allow students to expand their horizons, gain knowledge, play games, browse the web and complete assignments quickly. “I don’t go personally to the schools anymore, but I did a few years back,” Pat recalls. “There was a young girl that was being mainstreamed. She had some kind of developmental disability. 12

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM APRIL 2015

Now, knowing basic technology skills is crucial. CFC believes that for a student to emerge from a school system with a complete education, they must have access to computers. But CFC isn’t just for classrooms. The program offers cheap systems to senior citizens, students of all ages, teachers and anyone who qualifies. Computers for Classroom’s team of 10 knowledgeable and kind staff can assess whether you meet the requirements for a computer and then help select the right one for your lifestyle. In addition to its computer placings, CFC also works with Comcast to help families with kids in school get Internet for $10 a month and offers computer repairs for those in need at a much cheaper rate than most shops. Volunteers are a critical part of the CFC team. They “learn to take computers apart, add/remove RAM, remove the hard drives, learn the parts of the computer and have the opportunity to work with all different types

of systems,” says CFC. Volunteering provides great hands-on training for those wanting to gain more experience in the field. Plus, after 50 hours of volunteer work, you get to select a fully loaded computer or laptop. From there, you can choose to keep it or donate to a person in need. Computers for Classrooms is conscious not only of need, but also of the environment. “The greatest environmental impact comes during the initial manufacturing of computers, monitors and printers,” CFC explains. “Raw resources are mined, oil for plastics is drilled, air and water are polluted – all during the manufacturing process.” With this in mind, CFC produced a paper using the Environmental Protection Agency calculator that compares the benefits of reusing parts over merely recycling. There is such a demand for low-cost, guaranteed computer systems that it is a waste to destroy them through recycling before their end of life. In light of this, CFC reuses pieces and older models in their repairs and in remaking of systems. Because of Computers for Classrooms, students receive donated or refurbished computers in great condition, the environment suffers less and the digital divide decreases. Learn more about receiving a computer, how you can help and the program’s history at www.computersforclassrooms.org.

Report there are six key factors contributing to the aging of our region: 1

The exportation of youth from rural North State communities

2

The inability of college/university graduates to come home after graduation

3 The aging-in-place of North State residents 4 Increasing life expectancy of North State residents 5 Smaller family size 6 The importation of retirees

BY KACEY GARDNER PHOTOS COURTESY OF NVCF

The aging of the North State is an important topic, and it’s one a local campaign is trying to address in positive way through education, fundraising, and a special event. The campaign is called Have a Senior Moment on Purpose, and it’s run by the North Valley Community Foundation (NVCF) based in Chico. Every year, NVCF helps administer the Stiefvater Senior Endowment, a perpetual fund that is set up to benefit the spiritual, physical, and mental needs of older adults over time. Its grant program provides both financial and infrastructure support to build capacity in short and longterm fundraising for nonprofit organizations that serve seniors. In common usage, “having a senior moment” has usually referred to a momentary lapse in memory. But NVCF’s campaign seeks to redefine it. It encourages you to have a senior moment on purpose. “Not to say I’ve forgotten something, but to remember. To think about and to honor our community’s seniors.” This year, the three grantees targeted by NVCF and the Senior Moment campaign are the Peg Taylor Center, Community Action Agency, and Passages, all of which provide services that focus on improving the health and well-being of seniors in the North State. One of the ways NVCF plans to raise awareness and money this year is to engage the community in an event that will embody the spirit of the overall campaign and highlight the work of the grantees. Planned for May 7th at the Lakeside Pavilion in Chico, the evening will be modeled in the style of Tedx events, which include a series of speakers on a topic, and several opportunities to mix and mingle while discussing the topics at hand with other attendees. The Have a Senior Moment event will be emceed by NVCF’s Laura Cootsona, who says they are very excited to draw attention to the growing needs of older adults in our region. “We’re graying faster than any other region in the state, and so practically we need to catch up,” she says. “I think the event embodies the whole message, which is get involved, learn, do something.” For more information on how you can participate or otherwise give back, visit haveaseniormoment.org.

Featured Causes The Peg Taylor Center offers a complete daytime program of health and wellness services that are integrated into a day of stimulating activities, giving caregivers respite while participants connect with friends and work toward their health goals. Nursing care, therapies, activities and nutritious meals are accompanied by encouragement and laughter, and days are made brighter by the smiles of friends. To learn more or give, visit pegtaylorcenter.org. The Community Action Agency of Butte County provides a variety of programs that enable low-income families and seniors to improve their lives. We are committed to helping ensure that the basic food needs of seniors are met, so they can stay at home and be healthy. To learn more or give, visit buttecaa.com. Passages is a program that helps older adults and family care givers lead healthier, happier and more rewarding lives by providing and supporting critical services, referrals and community resources allowing our clients to sustain and enjoy independent lives. interest. He was allowed to go and it was an experience that would stick with him. Ironically, three years later as a photographer in the Navy, Gregg was asked to make a film showing how to use a speed graphic camera.

“Training in the Navy was outstanding,” Gregg says. “In aerial photography, the cameras we used were $7,500 in 1945. The rule was ‘if you dropped one, you jumped out after it!’ We shot a lot of pictures out of the plane.” Gregg’s professional photo work began early, at age 16, working for the Harrisburg Patriot-News in Pennsylvania’s state capital. “I was 15 or 16 years old taking pictures for the paper,” he recalls. “I photographed the governor so much we were on first-name basis.” Eventually he made it back to California, home to The Sacramento Bee, which for 30 years published Gregg’s freelance articles and photographs. In 1965, he became education secretary to former California Governor Pat Brown, Jerry Brown’s father. After years of work all over the world, Gregg was pulled by the allure of the mountains. He continued his work taking pictures of the entrancing wilderness around him. Many call Gregg’s work Ansellike, for him an amazing compliment. “Ansel Adams came to Lassen Park in 1949,” he says. “I’ve met him twice. He’s been my model for photography. His work was so outstanding both in the dark room and in the field. It’s one thing to take a good picture; it’s another to process it.” Gregg believes there needs to be an ongoing discussion about what you can do with digital photography. Although he converted to digital rather quickly, he looks back at the time spent in “stinky dark rooms with chemicals” as the best learning experience. Even today he won’t do anything with digital that he couldn’t do in a conventional darkroom, although he is “fascinated by the selfie” and new technology. “There’s nothing wrong with changing a camera error,” he explains, “but I really try to avoid souping up and playing games with pictures.” That kind of photographic honesty is what makes his scenery pictures so pure.

“Outstanding landscape photography is almost a matter of luck,” he says. “That mountain hasn’t had those clouds centered over it since.” But despite the role of chance, Gregg’s photos are also a matter of an artist seeing a beautiful view through wise eyes and processing it with careful integrity. You’d have to think Ansel Adams would be proud. 20

Cool KIDS

Research shows learning to play a musical instrument directly translates into improved reading and speech skills... and makes you cooler than the other kids.

PHOTO BY ERIN WENHAM + COURTESY OF ZACH AND QUINN

ZACH + QUINN “A little spark of kindness can put a colossal burst of sunshine into someone’s day.” As I began to write this article about random acts of kindness, my own experiences came to me from the day before and a story worth sharing began to envelop. I was sitting in a lively restaurant enjoying a scrumptious meal when another customer came up to me and asked, “would you like to see a magic trick?” My eyes lit up with anticipation as a smile spread clear across my face. The next thing I knew, a folded piece of paper was transforming into a dollar bill! The man handed me the dollar, and as he walked towards his table, the feeling of excitement lingered. Eleven year-old Zack and seven year-old Quinn impacted Chico last year through their random acts of kindness. Their mom, Michelle gave them the idea, and with the assistance of their determination and their passion to inspire others, Zack and Quinn’s random acts of kindness began. The first random act of kindness occurred on a sunny summer day in Bidwell Park. The boys gathered ten bouquets of flowers which they handed out to people they passed by. Each bouquet included a little positive note, that said something like, “have a good day.” Next week, the boys delivered homemade kits for the homeless, which included items such as mints, tissues, toothbrushes and canned foods. Zack and Quinn went downtown to deliver the kits, and the reactions they received from the

people were smiling, thankful faces. Another week, the boys made plates that had quotes written on them. They baked cookies and delivered the treats to neighbors. Their hope was each person they gave the treats to would be inspired to do the same, and so this never-ending circle of kindness would begin. With every passing week of summer, Zack and Quinn inspired more and more people to spread random acts of kindness. Their other acts of kindness included leaving gift cards for room service, donating crafts to preschool teachers, giving chocolates to teachers at Emma Wilson, giving towels to the Jesus Center and donating money to St. Judes. Zack and Quinn agreed their most creative act of kindness was making and delivering dog toys to their friends. First, they watched a video to learn how to make the toys, and then they created the dog toys using yarn. This was Quinn’s favorite act of kindness. “I love dogs and giving out the treats made me happy,” he excitedly responded. Zack’s favorite was giving out flowers in the park because he enjoyed seeing everyone’s reactions. “One lady had a huge smile on her face when we gave her the flowers, and it made me feel so good.” Zack and Quinn plan to do random acts of kindness again this summer. I know these boys can accomplish anything they set their mind to, as long as they continue to go through life with open hearts and big smiles.

Imagine the effect of a blow-torch on soft plastic. When your brain is inflamed, it determines how you think, feel, and act. Sadly, it is often the ones you love the most who feel the pain. Your brain prefers to burn ketones, which are made from fats. When the inflammation in your brain cools down, so does your anxiety, depression, and temper.

3. Manage weight. Big bellies are a sign of bad things going on inside of you. If your waist is bigger than your hips, you are likely to be at risk of heart disease through a combination of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and elevated blood sugars. Eating a Fat-Burning food plan is a smart, easy, permanent way to lose weight and feel great!

6. Live longer. The desire to stay alive is part of our survival instinct. If you have children, you would like to see them grow up. You also look forward to being a grandparent! Insulin, a hormone necessitated by the intake of sugar, is an indicator of longevity. The more insulin running through your system, the shorter your life. Becoming a fat-burner lengthens your life.

4. Increase energy. Fatigue is one of the most common complaints in today’s world. Your body can hold a minimal amount (about 2,000 kilo-cals) of stored sugar for energy use. However, if you are Ketogenically Adapted (a fat-burner) your body can access about 40,000 kilo-cals of energy with no problem at all! When you are “Keto-Adapted” you can kiss emer-

7. Manage stress. Too little stress isn’t good, but too much is even worse. In today’s hectic world, it’s rare to encounter anyone who isn’t stressed out. Fueling our brains and stabilizing our energy matrix by burning fat doesn’t take the stress away, but it sure helps us deal with it more effectively.

1. Sustain Virility! Being a Fat-Burner enhances sexual function. Sugar-burning, on the other hand, causes problems. Eating simple carbs like bread, pasta, sodas, and sweets destabilizes blood sugar and can cause testosterone levels to drop.

More than 3.5 million skin cancers are diagnosed annually. One in five Americans and one in three Caucasians will develop skin cancer over the course of a lifetime. A person’s risk for skin cancer doubles if he or she has had five or more sunburns. So LOVE your SPF, it could save your life! We’re giving it to you straight- there’s no safe way to tan. You might think a tan will give you that young, healthy glow, but over time it causes the opposite: a change in skin texture, wrinkling, age spots or worse – the BIG C. We’ve done our research and we’d like to give you a little sun science lesson. This is important stuff that could save your life, or at the least keep you looking younger longer – and who doesn’t want that? The sunlight that reaches us is made up of two types of harmful rays: long wave ultraviolet A (UVA) and shorter wave ultraviolet B (UVB). Basically, UVA rays can age us and UVB rays can burn us. Too much of either can damage the skin. This is why keeping your skin protected is serious business! According to the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, there are currently 200 sunscreen manufacturers making more than 4,000 different sunscreen products. That’s a lot of options. So how do you narrow it down for the best chance of protecting your skin? Sunscreens are differentiated by their active ingredients. Chemical sunscreens use chemical ingredients to absorb UVA/UVB rays, while mineral sunscreens use miner-

als such as Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide to scatter and reflect UVA/UVB rays. We think chemicals in sunscreen are bad news. One of the most common active ingredients in chemical sunscreens is oxybenzone. The US Center for Disease Control estimates that 97% of Americans have this chemical in their blood. Oxybenzone has been linked to endocrine disorders and should NEVER be used on infants or children. SPF stands for sun protection factor. When you see SPF, think of it as a measure of time. The math is pretty simple. If your skin would typically burn after 10 minutes in the sun, a sunscreen with SPF 15 should allow you to stay in the sun 15 times longer (150 minutes) before your skin starts to burn. Unless you live in a cave, exposure to the sun is unavoidable. But you can take precautions and protect you and your loved ones from sun damage. Generously apply sunscreen with minimum SPF 30 and UVA/UVB broad-spectrum protection to any parts of your body that are exposed to the sun each day. Reapply every 2 hours if you’re in direct sun. A sufficient amount for your entire body is 1 ounce, or about 2 tablespoons. Cover up! Use a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, long sleeved shirt or pants. Seek shade between 10AM and 4PM, when the sun’s burning rays are strongest. Examine your skin from head to toe every month and see your physician annually for a professional skin exam. Early detection is best.

BEAUT Y

Beauty Q+A

WAX ON, WAX OFF How long does my hair need to be before a wax? For best results, the hair should be between 1/4”-1/2” in length (about the length of an eyebrow). This generally takes about three weeks of grow out time before your appointment. The length is necessary for the wax to effectively grip the hair well enough to release it from the root, ensuring smooth, long-lasting results. If in doubt, longer is always better than too short. So ditch the razor and know that the results are worth the wait! I’m kind of a baby when it comes to pain—how badly does it really hurt? The anticipation of your appointment is worse than the wax itself. Most clients begin their appointment anxious, divulging that their online “research” and YouTube viewing made for a good laugh but amplified their anxiety. No doubt, once completed they mostly all say “that wasn’t as bad as I thought.” Yes, it hurts, but it only lasts for a second and then it’s over. To ease discomfort and anxiety,

choose a professional with experience and a good reputation. Most negative experiences begin with a professional who wasn’t skilled in the service. Also, a hot shower and exfoliation of the area before your appointment will allow the hair to release from the follicle easier, yielding a less painful wax. If still in doubt, an ibuprofen one hour before your wax can help take the “edge” off. Who should avoid waxing? Waxing is generally a safe, effective, and affordable method of hair removal. However, it is always encouraged to let the waxer know of any skin allergies, health conditions, or medications before your appointment. If you are taking medications such as Accutane, using Retin-A, or any products that contain Alpha Hydroxy Acids, it is best to wait until you are no longer using them as these may lift or irritate the skin. Depending on the area, there may be alternative options your waxer can suggest.

The Bare Facts About Laser Hair Removal by Dr. Vimali Paul Shaving, waxing, tweezing — we all hate it! It’s painful, time consuming, and the hair is back in no time. To get a permanent hair reduction, laser is the better way! Laser hair removal involves a series of treatments that pulse energy into the hair follicle, effectively killing it at its source. Due to the cycles of hair growth, six to eight sessions are usually required, with an approximate 20 percent hair loss each time. Facial hair sometimes requires more treatments, as it is regulated by hormonal fluctuations. Treatments are scheduled four to six weeks apart depending on the location, amount of hair, and individual growth rates. It is safe and relatively pain free, with little or no down time, and the results are worth it! Not every client is a candidate for this procedure, as the laser will not “see” white or blonde hair. There must be some visible

pigment for the laser to track it and send the energy to the source. Since the laser tracks dark pigment, the client will ideally have a lighter skin and darker hair, so tanning is discouraged to avoid burns or blisters. We have multiple lasers to address different skin tones, and our trained professionals take the utmost care to avoid adverse effects. They will inform you if they they think it is not safe to use the laser on you. So bring on the spring and summer wardrobes — shorts, miniskirts, and bikinis! Go sleeveless! Unwanted hair will be a thing of the past! Call the Derm Bar MedSpa at 530-342-2672 to find out your options for laser hair removal!

“The joy of dressing is an art.” — John Galliano This month our friends at the 1078 Gallery in downtown Chico allowed us to fill their stunning space with a different kind of exhibit - fashion. It is easy to see our clothing simply as the things we to wear every day, but it has the potential to make us feel like true masterpieces both inside and out. Every season new colors, textures, and patterns come together to create something striking and fresh. As with art, fashion gives us the opportunity to express ourselves in a uniquely personal way. We are so excited to share what’s in store from our local clothiers this Spring!

widening its mission and moving from Humboldt Road to 738 W. Fifth Street. It moved again in summer 2006 to its current location, and today it is widely recognized by the Chico community as being a necessary element in maintaining cultural currency in all art forms for local residents.

Music Director Josh Hegg says people come to 1078 to see things they can’t see other places. “We’re nonprofit and we’re not necessarily looking to become rich and famous,” he says. “We just want to keep the doors open and promote

The gallery has been awarded exemplary status by the California Arts Council and has received several National Endowment for the Arts grants. In the past, it has been supported by funding from the city of Chico and its Art Commission, in addition to its very vital membership, but city funding

has dwindled in recent years, creating a real challenge for the gallery and

forcing it to adapt in order to survive. The gallery’s board and committees

are made up of all volunteers, who work there for the love of it. “What I really enjoy about working there is I get to take chances with new artists in town or crazy music from all over the world and not necessarily be worried that it’s something that won’t adhere to a specific

There was one that was all made of dirty laundry that was repurposed. The visual artists that are part of the gallery are just incredible.”

of Carla Norlie was the winner with her suggestion of “Caper Acres” for the name of the future “Children’s Fairytale Playground.” Fundraising began in April of 1958, with not only the full participation from The Junior Art Club, but also volunteer support from community members and local businesses. The Junior Art Club went door to door gathering funds and sponsored Senator Theatre showings of Disney movies with proceeds going exclusively to Caper Acres. Grading and cultivating began on the three-acre plot of land in 1959, and N.R. Jesse drilled a well to establish a pump and water pressure system in the following years. Local artists began to draw concept art for the playground’s aspiring structures — many of which would, become a reality in the near future. Eugene Regal and Associates, a local civil engineering firm, began to survey and map the area, preparing to begin the architectural process which would take over 10 years to complete. With an estimated cost of $30,000, the community was finally ready to start building the fantasy play land. In 1964, Humpty Dumpty’s Sandbox became the first resident of Caper Acres and shortly afterwards, The Birthday Ring, Crooked House, Adobe Fort, Diamond Mine, and the Tree House Slide would soon be constructed. The public anticipated the opening, but before anyone was allowed into the playground, $5,000 was requested by the Parks Committee to erect a fence to

surround the play area for safety concerns. Seven years later from the initial start of surveying and planning, Caper Acres held the unofficial grand opening in 1967, letting the public experience the magical fantasyland for the first time. But, it wasn’t until Mary Ann Wells, Little Miss Chico of 1969, cut the ribbon in June of 1970, that everyone celebrated the official grand opening of Caper Acres. The collaborative effort of a community coming together is what made Caper Acres such a success. Though much of Chico has grown up and developed around Caper Acres and Bidwell Park, it remains to be a place for the community and imaginations to connect, and that will not change for years to come. Humpty Dumpty will continue to watch generations passing under the castle wall entrance as the large sycamore and valley oaks trees tower high above.

BY MATTHEW MANFREDI

There is only one place in Chico you can find high castle walls, a big chunk of cheese, and the naïve Humpty Dumpty in the same place (no, I’m not talking about Fifth and Ivy Streets. during Halloween). I’m referring to the one and only Caper Acres. Straying far from traditional playground features, Caper Acres is a magical surrounding for the child’s imagination to run wild. But, no matter the age, one cannot help but to be enchanted by Caper Acres’ “storybook” surroundings. Dating back to the 1950s, the three-acre fantasyland has grown from small beginnings into the Bidwell Park trademark it is today. Along with other organizations, The Chico Junior Art Club (later became the Chico Women’s Club in 1960) began the project with the intent to connect the community by building an imaginative children’s playground in Lower Bidwell Park. Bidwell Park’s superintendent at the time, Colin Jackson, along with The Chico Junior Art Club collected inspiration from Oakland’s Fairyland and Stockton’s Pixie Woods and returned to Chico with some of the first blueprints for Caper Acres. An agreement had been settled to build a playground with the partnership of the city’s Park District in the summer of 1957. Within the following months, The Junior Art Club conducted a contest to establish a name for the new playground, awarding a $5 prize to the winner with the most creative name. New Again Kitchen & Bath Presents

House Call

April 2015: A Home With History

The Client

“The house was vacant for about six years and I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it,” Walter says. “And so, you know, I paid people to mow the lawns so it wouldn’t look deserted. And then I just decided, well, maybe it might be nicer to retire here.” In 2008, Walter moved back into his family’s home and commuted each week to the Bay for his job as an English professor at Contra Costa College. It wasn’t until there was an opening at Yuba College, for dean of the Department of Fine Arts and Language Arts, that Walter’s transition back to the North Valley was complete. “It’s been nice,” Walter says about moving back. “Some of the neighbors on Mountain View, the street behind this one, they remember my parents when they lived here. And some of my childhood friends surprisingly have moved back.”

The Call

Walter Masuda grew up in Chico in an iconic home on Vallombrosa Avenue. Built in 1959, the corner house with a huge wraparound lawn across from Bidwell Park was commissioned by a supermarket-chain owner for his daughter. The father had used the same architect for his own larger home, also on Vallombrosa, and the similarities between the two are striking enough to confuse visitors to this day. The Masudas bought the smaller of the twin homes in 1969 from artist John Morehead (owner of the Phoenix building downtown) and have owned it ever since. In 1977, at 17 years old, Walter left his parents’ home, and Chico, to attend college in the Bay Area. He remained in the San Francisco area to live and work as an adult, but when his parents passed away, he had to make a choice about what to do with their home.

The Call Though the home Walter grew up in has beautiful and interesting features, when he returned as an adult, it needed a lot of updating. Everything in the kitchen was yellow and blue, he said. The sink was yellow, the countertops were yellow, and there were even two tiles that featured pictures of chickens. “Maybe it was cute in 1959,” Walter says. “But not now. And it was just too much yellow everywhere. Too much yellow.” The first thing Walter did was update the kitchen appliances, which were all from the ’50s. Then after living for a time with a kitchen with one foot in the past and one in the present, he decided it was time to update the counters and floors to match the newer style of the appliances while still maintaining the integrity of the era the home was built in. Walter had learned of New Again Kitchen and Bath in a local publication, and after meeting Ric, determined they were a good match. “Once I met him, I decided that I liked him,” Walter says. When Ric came to the house and saw the kitchen’s beautiful knotty pine cabinets, they decided that they actually suited the style of 50

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM APRIL 2015

the home and should stay. So the challenge became how to update the countertops and sinks in a modern way that wouldn’t clash with the more rustic style of the original cabinets. “It can be hard to do granite in an existing kitchen,” Ric says. “Sometimes it will look too new.” Walter agreed that whatever granite they chose for the countertops needed to complement the pine cabinets and original copper hardware. “Because you know if you choose Black Galaxy or something like that, it’s very modern looking,” he said. “That’s fine if the rest of your kitchen is modern looking, but then I realized If I choose a granite that’s too sleek, it’s not going to fit with this rustic cabinet.”

The Cure “We looked at a lot of granites and once we saw Sedona, we both agreed this was the perfect stone for this home,” Ric recalls. The more earthy, orangish-brown granite complemented the wood cabinets in a way that added modern freshness while not taking away

from the kitchen’s original authenticity. “I wish I had taken some before photos, because it doesn’t look anything like it did before,” Walter says. “It’s much better than what it was, and I feel like now the countertops match the new appliances. Before, the new appliances really clashed with the countertops because they were so old.” The original double sink (yep, you guessed it — yellow) was also replaced with a single, stainless steel sink to accommodate washing larger objects. All of the work by New Again took only two days, and that included putting new granite and sinks in the powder room off the kitchen as well. Walter also had his backsplash and flooring redone by a local tile company. “We like doing every element of the remodel, but very often the customer is already talking with other tradesmen, and we do just the granite,” Ric says. “We are happy to do whatever our customer wants us to do. It was such a pleasure to work on this beautiful, iconic Chico home. The kitchen has many interesting accents, such as the angled plant holder in front of the sink that had a support post that could not be removed. We did what we always do at New Again — we just figured it out and made it work. The finished result is beautiful.” CONNECT

ANTIQUE DIY

File Cabinet Re-Fab

Who says file storage has to be boring? The more DIY projects we do, the more we realize the potential for everyday items to become beautiful additions to our homes and work spaces. Who would have thought a bland file cabinet could be so cute? If your office is looking a bit drab, cheer it up with with this simple cabinet makeover and filing will be a chore no more! Of course this project isn’t

PROJECT + PHOTOS BY ERIN WENHAM

limited to the office. These updated cabinets would work well as night stands, side tables, or any other extra storage you might need.

MATERIALS NEEDED net at We found this little two-drawer cabi File cabinet in Chico ent ignm Cons t Stree Orange Screw driver for just $20! Pliers 2-3 cans of spray paint and one can of primer (be sure it’s suitable for metal) Drop cloths or cardboard Ultra fine sandpaper Craft Paper

. .

INSTRUCTIONS Thoroughly clean your file cabinet (watch out for spiders!). Remove the hardware. Every cabinet will be slightly

different, but we were able to easily remove the drawer pulls from back side of the drawer with a flathead screwdriver. The card holders were also simple to remove from the back side with a pair of pliers. Be very gentle when doing so, as your

. . .

cardholders will likely be light and easily bent. If your cabinet is especially glossy, lightly sand it for easier

paint application. Be sure to paint in a well ventilated area and follow paint

instructions carefully. It is best to find a flat surface and paint each side laying face up to prevent running. Apply 1-2 coats of primer and allow to dry completely.

Depending on the color you choose, it may take at least 2-3 coats of paint to fully cover your cabinet. We learned a tough lesson with our lovely yellow paint, which required several coats to achieve a smooth finish. Allow paint to dry

. . .

completely between coats. We chose to update our hardware with some fresh white

paint, but the color possibilities are endless. Cut your craft paper to fit the card holders and create your

own custom labels.

INVESTMENT WISDOM FROM WARREN BUFFETT Who is Warren Buffett you ask? Only one of the wealthiest individuals in the world, a philanthropist, and business magnate. He is widely known for the effective management of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., a publicly traded company, where he has served as chairman and CEO since 1970. Every year, shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway receive a report on the state of the company, along with world-class investment wisdom from Warren Buffett. 2014 marks the 50th year of the company, and the report from America’s most-admired (yet least-imitated) investor. Mr. Buffett is respected and often congratulated in the media for successfully investing in value companies for the long term. Many of his holdings he has owned for years, if not decades. We admire his investment philosophy and thought we’d share a few excerpts from his letter with our readers.

Volatility and Risk “Stock prices will always be far more volatile than cash-equivalent holdings. Over the long term, however, currency-denominated instruments are riskier investments — far riskier investments — than widely-diversified stock portfolios that are bought over time and that are owned in a manner invoking only token fees and commissions. Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.” Long-Term Perspective “For the great majority of investors … who can — and should — invest with a multi-decade horizon, quotational declines are unimportant. Their focus should remain fixed on attaining significant gains in purchasing power over their investing lifetime.” We hold in our hands or in our pockets access to instant economic and market data. This constant barrage of information has caused many value, goal-driven investors to make irrational and emotional decisions in their long-term portfolios. Markets

are volatile but the biggest risk to an investor’s success isn’t choosing the right mutual fund with the lowest cost — it is investor behavior. We believe that following Warren Buffett’s basic investment strategy is a great foundation to successful investing — buy good companies, anticipate volatility, and keep a long-term perspective.

CLAM CHOWDER A LA MINUTE

INGREDIENTS 3 tbsp bacon lardons 2 tbsp butter 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) 2-3 tbsp medium chopped garlic 3 tsp oregano 3 tsp thyme 3 pinches red pepper flakes 1/2 cup sliced carrots 1/2 cup sliced celery 1 1/4-2 cups just cooked red, white, & blue potatoes 16-20 little neck clams rinsed 1/2-3/4 cup chardonnay 2-2 1/4 cups 40% or higher heavy cream 5-6 tbsp Italian flat leaf parsley Freshly cracked black pepper to taste

• Add EVOO, butter, garlic, oregano, pepper flakes, celery, potatoes and carrots. • Saute briefly and avoid burning garlic. • Add the clams and all but 2 Tablespoons parsley and continue to saute, trying to give the potatoes a little color. • Add chardonnay and reduce 2/3. Carrots, potatoes and celery will be almost cooked. • Add heavy cream and continue to cook until desired thickness. • Turn into bowls, garnish with remaining parsley and finish with cracked black pepper. • Serve with a warm soft or hard bread. For our chowder ‘Mop” we chose a Muzzio from the locally owned Tin Roof bakery.

FARM FRESH

BIANCHI ORCHARDS If you haven’t ever toured a farm by vintage Jeep, we highly recommend it. As we bump through the dirt roads of the farm, brisk breeze at our backs, walnut trees arch above us at different heights depending on age, while vineyards crawl and reach below. At Bianchi Orchards, “if you see

anything beautiful, it’s ours” says owner Anne.

I

t wasn’t always that way though. When Anne and her husband, Ray, bought the farm in 1976, there was an immense

amount of work to do. The barn, now tasting room, was full of TVs and sardine cans. “Neighbors came over just to thank us for cleaning up the property,” Anne says. Of the 60 acres they own, every single one has something wonderful to see, taste, or smell. With a perfect view of Mt. Lassen, the tasting room is a refurbished barn from the early 1920s. You can come to sample walnuts and wine from the handmade bar and browse products from other local farms. Bianchi grows Chandler walnuts. They have the highest amount of crack out, meaning the most meat, and also significantly less tannin than other walnut types. You can choose from natural plain walnuts, honey glazed, cinnamon glazed, or butter based caramel. Having personally tasted Bianchi walnuts, I am now spoiled. They are the 57

most delicious smooth, buttery nut and the glazes are not overwhelmingly sweet. A perfect snack or topping for a salad. The Bianchis also grow grapes. Right now, you can buy their Symphony, Pinot Grigio, and Sangiovese wine. Walnuts and wine: I could survive off that duo. The fields yield rows and rows of walnut trees. From the passenger seat of the Jeep, daughter Becky holds her twin daughters in her arms and points a finger toward the different trees. “Those we love because they look like a park, and those we love because of their production,” she says. They spaced some trees 40 feet apart, and some 25 to experiment how they grow best. “We have been blessed with really great walnuts,” Anne says. In October, all five of the Bianchi children (Robbie, Becky, Julie, Katie, and Eddie) come to help hand harvest. They all help with different aspects of the farm throughout the year as well, making it more than just a place that grows nuts. Bianchi Orchard grows relationship too. There are events throughout the year, including “A Day in the Orchard” where hayrides are given, live music is played, and harvesting is demonstrated. If you know of a man who recently went down on one knee, or are that man yourself, there is a ranch house setup for weddings that has been redone perfectly, overlooking the vineyards and trees. At a steal of a price, you can get married at Bianchi Orchards. The package includes 100 chairs, a tent, and overnight stays in the amicably airy and quaint bedrooms. Picture mountain views during sunset, surrounded by fairy-tale lit orchards. Sigh. If you’re in search of a new spot for an event, the tasting room holds about 80 people sitting comfortably. With a high ceiling and rustic yet refreshed atmosphere, guests will feel that they have entered a cozy country barn with industrial attributes. We couldn’t stop saying, “This is so beautiful,” “Wow, such a pretty space,” “I want to live here,” etc. If you ask, they may even show you their handmade nutcracker that lives next to the room. It quickly separates the shells and meat of the nut, although crunching it in your palm is fun, too. The Bianchis have put their hearts into all that they grow and build. They have plans to plant fruit trees — plums, peaches, apples, apricots — and there is no doubt that the trees will reward their efforts with delicious consequence. If you are in the Los Molinos area, or on a hunt for the best walnut, take a quick stop off Highway 99 at Bianchi Orchards. You never know what treasures are living behind those trees, but in this case it is a rare gem of a property, product, and family.

The rustling of the crowd and warmly dimmed lights give the communal feel that, like you, everyone is here and excited for the show.
