FROM THE EDITOR UPGRADED LIVING STAFF I’m sure that at one time or another I’ve claimed each season to be my favorite, but that is one of the many great things about this area—we get to experience all four seasons, each bringing just as many gifts as the one before it. But spring, especially in Chico, is surely one of the most magical times of the year. The grass is green, the air is fresh, and best of all—the patios are sunny! It’s a time to re-emerge after all of those dreary, rainy days and rediscover so many of the things there are to love about this amazing place we call home. In this issue we say a big “happy birthday” to a place where I’m sure most of us have enjoyed a birthday or two. In their 30 years, Tres Hombres has served as a venue for countless celebrations of our own, and this month we celebrate their impressive milestone as well as exciting new additions to the Chico favorite. You’re sure to find us on the patio enjoying their famous margaritas and guacamole, soaking up some long awaited sunshine. Of course, to fully enjoy this beautiful season you need the perfect outfit to go with it. We’re excited to bring you our 2017 spring fashion sampler, inspired by talented local clothiers and the idea that to live beautifully is to surround yourself with the things you love.

After spending two months in Miami, he came to Chico where his brother and sister live. When asked how he came to Twin Oaks, he explained that his brother did research and found Twin Oaks to be the best rehabilitation center in Northern California. Geoffrey attests to that.

TALL I dubbed him as “the most interesting man in the world.” He was tall, bright-eyed, and welcoming as my photographer and I walked into his room. He was charming and full of witty quips. This did not seem like a man who was paralyzed just two months prior, completely unable to walk or use his arms. His name is Geoffrey Anderson and his story is nothing short of unbelievable. He talked about his talent for making things grow and the 40-50 humming birds that would come to his house when he lived in Forest Ranch. He talked about his time living in Hawaii, about hunting wild pigs. About the time he was in Guatemala and watched the sun rise over the Tikal Mayan ruins, listening to the jungle as it slowly began to wake up. What Geoffrey called a “goosebump moment.” Sitting there, the stories grew in detail and it was hard not to be captivated. He started with simple answers to questions, like “yes” and “no.” We had to earn his trust before we got the colorful details of who he was and how he got to Twin Oaks all the way from Ecuador. Yes, Ecuador. It was in Ecuador where Geoffrey had fallen and broken his neck. He was on medication
“They literally poured me out of the car,” Geoffrey jokes about his condition when arriving to Twin Oaks. He was a quadriplegic, with no use of his arms or legs. Most people would accept this fate and give up. But Geoffrey looked his family in the eye and told them he would walk again, despite their side glances. It’s been 10 months since Geoffrey came to Twin Oaks and there he stood before us, laughing, joking, walking sturdy and proud. But he admits, he didn’t get to this point on his own—he gives credit to the physical therapists who helped him regain the ability to walk. “You have to do the work,” Geoffrey says about his recovery. He spends 2–3 hours daily in the therapy gym doing his “homework” as he calls it. He knows the power of hard work and uses his energy to support others at Twin Oaks. You can find Geoffrey standing in the hall giving positive advice and encouragement to others who wheel by him. He called himself a cheerleader for recovery and I agreed, watching other patients smile as we walked by, Geoffrey greeting each by first name. There was something about Geoffrey. Not just his charm, but something else. Something the staff at Twin Oaks saw in him as well. A strong spirit, one that refused to give up. Undoubtedly the most interesting man I have ever met.

that caused him to stumble on occasion and during one such incident, he fell back and hit a wall. His head hit first and his body fell to the floor. It was a week after that incident when he began to lose use of his arms and legs, still unaware of the damage the fall had caused him. A friend told him to get on a plane and go to Miami for help. There at the ER, after an MRI scan, he was told he broke his neck. Geoffrey had to go into surgery where they put in two titanium bars held in place with 10 screws. As our eyes widened he laughed and explained he has other metal parts in his body and told us a story of how he ended up with a metal plate in his skull when he was six years old.

attacks, anxiety, and other strains that make it difficult for mothers to enjoy life—and they are treatable. However, for families to benefit from available treatments, medical providers must engage with these issues and available resources. That’s where Mothers Strong comes in. The group has worked to establish valuable links between the private, public, and professional community in order to address these struggles. In just over five years, Mothers Strong has already made impressive changes in the area. Through projects like Mother Café (a private Facebook group for mothers to connect with each other) and Butte 2-1-1 (a 24hour helpline), Mothers Strong has developed critical support networks for families dealing with the effects of PMADs. Holly encounters the need for these resources every day. The midwife provides referrals and treatment within her own practice, but she states that it’s challenging to find mental health referrals unless patients are critically ill. Still, she’s hopeful for the future. With aid from First Five Butte County, a commission that funds local children’s services like Mothers Strong, Holly continues the work of her doctoral project by increasing communication within the healthcare community so that doctors are comfortable discussing PMADs and can deliver consistent information to patients. Holly and other community members have also utilized Mothers Strong to work with obstetricians on increasing referrals and screening for women so that any mental health issues are detected—and treated—as early as possible.

“Healthy moms make healthy babies,”
states Holly Kralj, a nurse midwife specialist for Enloe Women’s Services in Chico. And a mother’s well-being relies on more than physical health—a fact that is often overlooked by medical professionals. With the help of Mothers Strong, a group of families and community partners supporting women with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, Holly advocates for healthy women from the mind down.
Although labor and delivery are physically exhausting by all standards, postpartum depression and anxiety remain the most common complication of childbirth. One out of seven women in the United States will experience a form of PMAD (perinatal mood and anxiety disorder), and these numbers hold true within Butte County. PMADs appear in emotional and physical symptoms that might affect women during pregnancy or after childbirth. They include depression, panic
Working alongside obstetricians at Enloe, Holly can analyze problems on a small scale. “In general, doctors are taught about ‘abnormals’—things that can go wrong,” she says. “Our job is to help women know as much as possible about self-care.” By providing both midwifery and traditional obstetric services, her practice spends more time with patients to focus on both mental and physical health. And because of groups like Mothers Strong, they have more resources available if a woman needs help. After working as a midwife for so many years, Holly sees firsthand how helping even one mother impacts the surrounding area. She receives yearly Christmas cards from past patients and regularly runs into nowgrown children she once helped deliver. “By supporting moms we support families,” she says. “We support the community long term.” IF YOU FEEL THAT YOU OR A MOTHER YOU KNOW ARE AT RISK FOR PMADS. CO O L KI D : E L L IOT T P IC K E T T “Five minutes to places.” A simple phrase that all performers have heard hundreds of times, yet somehow never ceases to lose the adrenaline rush that comes with it. Seventeen year old Elliott Pickett is a seasoned performer—whether it be singing in front of a enthusiastic audience or coaching peers to be the best they can, Elliott has much experience in the world of musical theater.

Elliott is an accomplished pianist who has made an impact on our community through his passion for music. Since he was eight years old, he has always been devoted to music. When his family moved to Chico and got a piano, he began playing and quickly going through beginners books, captivated and inspired by his mom’s interest of playing piano. “It just made sense,” Elliott explains; his free will to learn and discover something new without being forced into it made him want to learn more. Six months later, Elliott began piano lessons, and since then has increased in skill and his appreciation for the art. Elliott is most experienced with piano, but also is trained in the flute, guitar, ukulele, horn, and a variety of other instruments. Elliott loves playing all of these different instruments because each one has something that makes it unique. “I like what I can do with piano; it helps me understand music theory. I also love accompanying choirs,” Elliott states. “I like the horn because I love hearing the brass swell, and I like the guitar because there is a certain rawness to it.”
Recently Elliott directed the music for local community theater programs. His first glimpse at directing took place during She Loves Me; he worked as a rehearsal pianist and ran a couple of rehearsals. Since then, Elliott has been offered to play in the orchestra as well as direct music for various musicals. Elliott illustrates how there is a wide variety of people who are in orchestras—from lawyers, to drivers’ education teachers, to Chico State musicians. This variety of people from different ages and careers adds dimension to the orchestra. After She Loves Me, Elliott was offered to direct the music for Chico Theater Company’s My Fair Lady. Elliott’s role included warming up the singers before practice and teaching them their parts. His favorite thing was working with the soloists. “We were able to talk about certain phrases and the emotion in the songs.” Elliott enjoyed seeing the progression from the first rehearsal to the performances. “It’s not really words, it’s just like a feeling,” Elliott describes as he recalls the memory of seeing his hard work and art interpreted on stage. Whether performing on stage or seeing your hard work brought to life by others, musical theater is such a beautiful form of art. It has the capacity to touch others through the harmonies of characters and emotions of songs. All this hard work and dedication takes hours and hours of practice, and when “five minutes to places” is called, performers like Elliott can’t help but feel a sense of pride and excitement.
Efficient and resourceful.

Michael Thomas and Johnny Scurto arrived in Downtown Chico in the summer of 1986 and immediately fell in love with all the possibilities Chico had to offer. Charming shops lined the streets and local business owners delivered the type of hometown hospitality that the two had missed since they left home. They discovered a large brick building that sat vacant on the corner of W 1st Street and Broadway and decided to take a look inside. Once home to General John Bidwell’s general store and ranch office, the space was perfectly situated as the premier entrance to Downtown Chico but, due to its size, had proven difficult to manage successfully. The dreamers that they were, Michael and Johnny leased the space and began building Chico’s own Tres Hombres in October of 1986. Michael began his career in the restaurant industry bussing tables at Cantina Los Tres Hombres in North Lake Tahoe; he was a natural. Along with his affinity for working with patrons, he was sharp at picking up what made the Cantina successful. Michael & Johnny envisioned bringing that same experience to Downtown Chico and by the end of the year, they had done just that. Tres Hombres opened its doors on January 7, 1987, receiving instant attention and loyalty from locals. Michael crafted and trained his staff on the Tres Hombres Experience, focused on providing excellent service and quality to each and every visitor. Years drew on and Tres Hombres’ popularity continued to grow. The largest of Downtown Chico’s restaurants, and due to its close proximity to the Chico State campus, the location became a mainstay for locals and students alike. With its vibrant and welcoming atmosphere, Tres quickly became the go-to for casual dining downtown. Michael and the staff at Tres involved themselves in every aspect of the local downtown community that they possibly could, sponsoring its sidewalk sales, Thursday Night Markets, Friday Night Concert series, and more. Michael believed in the importance of Tres being a steward of its community and his commitment to that belief showed patrons that Tres was just as invested in the community as his patrons were in his business.
TRES TURNS

Due to its fun and casual reputation, Tres also attracted the attention of some of Chico’s brightest talent. Students, eager to prove themselves, flocked to Tres for their first chance at the restaurant industry and the success that a busy restaurant like Tres offered. Many of these young adults turned their jobs at Tres into a career in Chico, while others used their time there as a stepping stone, taking what they had learned to earn jobs at larger restaurants in the Bay Area and beyond. Steve Gibanov was of the latter group. 17
and pushed him to respect both ingredients and technique while paying better attention to presentation. He was preparing for whatever would come next and, luckily for Chico, Steve’s career was heading back this way. In Chico, Tres continued to move forward, growing in popularity with each passing year. As with most stories though, success doesn’t come without its fair share of challenges. On December 1st, 2009 Tres Hombres caught fire. The fire, though devastating, rallied the Chico community around one of its favorite hot spots, with residents offering a helping hand wherever possible. Tres Hombres was rebuilt over the following 10 months and, with a completely revamped restaurant, Michael opened Downtown Chico’s first fully enclosed street-side patio dining experience. The patio was a hit and the community poured back into the newly opened restaurant in record numbers. An innovation for downtown in its own right, the patio spurred multiple restaurant owners to build their own.
Born and raised in San Francisco, Steve grew up in a big family. As one of five kids living with his parents in a two bedroom house, he learned the importance of working well in groups from an early age. Steve moved with his dad to Chico in 1996 and began working in the food industry while attending Pleasant Valley High School. The experience gained from working in the fast-paced food business would later prove to be invaluable. Steve began studying criminal justice at Butte College, convinced he would someday become a top crime scene investigator. He was always detail oriented and enjoyed challenges. As life can sometimes lead us in a different direction, Steve, was invited by a friend to check out Tres Hombres. Aware of his prior experience in the industry, his friend thought he would be a perfect fit for the kitchen staff. Steve

immediately fell in love with the restaurant, applied, and was hired alongside a group of strong cooks who were truly passionate about their craft. He worked at Tres from 19982002 and the experience encouraged him to undergo a complete career shift. Steve returned to San Francisco in 2002, enrolled in the California Culinary Academy. He graduated in late 2003 and began working for some of San Francisco’s more notable restaurants and chefs including master Italian chef, Steffan Terje at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, and James Beard awarded chef, Tracy Di’Jardin, at the Ballpark Steakhouse. He continued to hone his craft in San Francisco at Florio and a number of other restaurants while also working in corporate food service, crafting meals for exquisitely large parties. The food scene in San Francisco was vibrant
Over the years that followed, the numbers at Tres continued to climb and, with it, so did the accolades. Voted Chico’s best margarita 12 years running, Tres was also home to the best patio to enjoy it. At the end of 2016, as luck would have it, Michael received a call from an old friend notifying him that one of his favorite employees, Chef Steve Gibanov, was returning to Chico. Michael reached out to Steve, discussed his interest in expanding the menu, and offered him the position of executive chef. Excited to return to his old stomping grounds, where his obsession with food began, Steve accepted Michael’s offer and returned to Tres to revamp its menu and dining experience.
Beaming with wide eyes and even wider smiles, Michael Thomas and Chef Steve couldn’t be more proud of what they’ve accomplished together in celebration of Tres Hombres’ 30th anniversary, and rightfully so. With contagious excitement, the two discuss their plans for their upcoming seasonal menus for the restaurant that will bring a farm-to-table experience to Tres. Focusing on the best ingredients that each season has to offer, high quality meats and seafoods, and utilizing in-season produce direct from Downtown Chico’s very own Thursday and Saturday farmers markets, the menus will be the perfect complement to the elevated experience delivered by the Blue Agave Room.
With a newly polished menu in the works and Tres’ 30th anniversary right around the corner, Michael decided it was time to revisit a set of plans he had created for the restaurant’s eventual expansion. Serendipitously, he received a call from the owner of the building letting him know that a fried chicken joint was planning on moving in next door where Marcelli’s sandwich shop once was. Disinterested in the possibility of having to wait another six years for a chance to expand the restaurant and the daily onslaught of the smell of fried chicken, Michael signed the lease on the space next door. Rather than simply increase the restaurant’s maximum occupancy, Michael wanted to create an entirely separate experience for his customers. He reached out to Richard Billson of Billson Construction and local designer Dianne Whiteman and began laying out plans for the new space. Appropriately named the Blue Agave Room, Tres’ new addition would be another first for Downtown Chico. A private banquet facility with its own private bar and bartender, the Blue Agave Room would comfortably accommodate 50 people for a seated event or 75 for cocktails and appetizers, making it the ideal location for rehearsal dinners, birthdays, anniversaries, holiday parties and Chico State events. With a full array of audio and visual equipment included, the space would also shine for corporate trainings and company meetings.
artistry and craftsmanship alone is worth the trip. Within a few short months, Michael’s vision began to manifest itself, completely transforming the space and making it nearly unrecognizable to anyone who frequented the delis that once occupied it. It was exactly what he had wanted all along and just what his patrons needed. With the finishing touches underway, Tres Hombres’ Blue Agave Room is set to open in the middle of April, just in time for wedding season. The banquet room will boast its own set of custom menus prepared by Chef Steve and a full-service bar stocked with every item your event could possibly require.
After 30 years in business, the love that Michael felt for Chico when he first arrived continues to be his passion. His commitment to his restaurant, employees and the Downtown Chico area has remained unwavering over those three decades and his dedication is proof of that statement. Tres Hombres is seeing its second generation of employees, as the kids of former employees begin their path in the foodservice industry there. Constantly motivated by the energy and creativity of these twenty-something year olds, Michael and Steve are looking forward to seeing what the future will bring. Naturally, we couldn’t be more excited for them.

As the old saying goes, April showers bring May flowers. This year is a little different, because March showers will bring April Wildflowers. For the fifth consecutive year, the Wildflower Music Festival will be taking place on Saturday, April 22nd from 12 to 8 p.m. with the gates opening at 11:30 a.m., at 2500 Estes road in Chico. Sharing the same name, the Wildflower Open Classroom, a tuition free public charter school which focuses on teaching kindergarten through 8th graders through hands-on thematic learning, is putting on the event. The school has been around for less than a decade but has strived to create a positive and self-motivating learning environment for its students, with practices that can teach the students to become stewards of the earth. Since its inception, the Wildflower Music Festival has grown into the popular attraction it is today. The festival is a hit amongst not only the members of the school but of members of the greater Chico community. The festival is organized by a group of parents whose children attend the Wildflower Open Classroom and they created the event, the largest fundraiser Wildflower conducts, as a fun way to raise money for the school. Each ticket costs $40.00 and all of the proceeds go into the classrooms. This is made possible by having drinks and food donated from various businesses across Chico. Tickets can be purchased on the day of the festival at the main gates or at the Wildflower Open Classroom main office, Chico Florist, Greenline Cycles, or online at Eventbrite.com. The festival strives to be both parent and kid friendly with music, food and drinks as well as a silent auction which includes tickets to Disneyland along with other various prizes. At the event, there will be six bands playing throughout the day which will cover a broad range of music. The artists that will be performing are: Kyle Williams, who will be playing from 12–1 p.m., the Loki Miller Band from 1–2, the Jeff Pershing Band from 2–3, Surrogate from 3:30–4:30, Junior Toots from 4:30–5:45 and lastly the Mother Hips from 6–8.
Along with music, there will be food booths, drink stations, and kid friendly activities. Grab a grilled cheese from Mayhem Gourmet Grilled Cheese, a burrito from The Taco Truck, or a snack from the Wildflower Snack Shack which will have various snacks as well as food donated from the Son’s of Italy and other local businesses. If you want a healthier choice, you can go to Chico Natural Foods’ booth and get a wholesome and healthy treat. Falling on Earth Day, the Wildflower Music Festival is staying true to its roots, by having a completely waste free event. Adult drinks such as beer will be proved by Sierra Nevada and will be served in eco-friendly stainless steel pint cups donated by Klean Kanteen and drinks for kids will be served at various locations at the festival. Libations will also include wine, margaritas, and a champagne happy hour from 12–1 that is sponsored by Korbel, so get there early! Both parents and kids can have a great time at the event. Activities for kids such as jump houses, craft tables, a petting zoo, bubbles, soccer, bean bag toss, obstacle courses and face painting will keep the kids having fun. It takes a village to raise a child and this event is no different. To be a part of the event, one can volunteer for a two hour shift at any time throughout the day and receive 50% off of their ticket, the help is greatly appreciated and the festival could not run without all of the volunteer hours it receives. Chico is no doubt a unique community and events like this just make the bond stronger. Grab a blanket or a lawn chair and plant yourself on the ground to enjoy the sounds of great music. WANNA RETIRE A MILLIONAIRE? On my way to work last week I heard a radio ad stating that to retire successfully you will need at least $1,000,000. We don’t necessarily agree, as everyone will have a different savings target depending on their needs and goals. Nonetheless, the idea of retiring “as a millionaire” is appealing. So, how does one go about retiring a millionaire? 1. Be disciplined and save consistently. Pay yourself first. 2. Be willing to accept risk so your savings can work for you. 3. Minimize debt, especially as you get closer to retirement. If you retire with $1,000,000 but have $250,000 in debt, your net worth isn’t over a million. The earlier you start saving, the better. Every year that you put off saving means you will need to save more and/or take on additional risk to meet your goal.
BY RENEE MICHEL, MBA AND JOE SWEENEY, CFP® FINANCIAL ADVISORS AT ASSET MANAGEMENT GROUP
Assuming an age 65 retirement and an annual return of 8%, how much do you need to save each year to reach $1,000,000? If you are 20…you need to save $215 per month or $2,587 per year. If you are 30…you need to save $483 per month or $5,803 per year. If you are 40…you need to save $1,139 per month or $13,679 per year. If you are 50…you need to save $3,069 per month or $36,830 per year. If you have the right savings plan and investment discipline, the dream of retiring a millionaire could become a reality. Past performance is not indicative of future returns. An individual cannot invest directly in an index. Hypothetical financial scenarios are not examples of any guaranteed outcome, but are provided as examples of goals and the potential that investing may provide as a way to seek those goals. Finding a Solution to the
Uncommon Problem When I go in to talk with Rick Thomas of Timios Title, it is after hours. The sun has already gone down on the world outside, but inside the lights are on and shining brightly on an office almost completely devoid of paper. As Rick begins to talk about the company, one of the first things he mentions is just that: the lack of paper. Timios Title, he tells me, is 21st century escrow. Their Chico office, which opened this year, did so without a single filing cabinet and you’d be hard-pressed to find a shred of paper in the whole place. Everything the escrow agents and others who work in the office deal with that comes in from real estate agents, lenders, and appraisers can be shared, edited, and filed with the click of a mouse. Daniele Eyestone, an escrow officer at Timios, was skeptical at first because in a title company, documents are the whole business. “At my last job, everything was paper. (Here) we are able to scan and email and do everything entirely paperless. We can just drag and drop what the agents send us to the file (on the desktop), with as little paper as possible,” she said. Amber Aston, another escrow officer, loves the technology aspect of the company. “Rick talks about the 21st century a lot, but the innovation gets better and better and it makes our jobs more efficient. Our utilization of the technology is what makes us stand out from our competitors,” she says. In centralizing to the Internet, the industry has eliminated a lot of the legwork necessary to complete transactions, making the process that much quicker and smoother for both client and company.

Timios Title’s Chico iteration could be considered Glenn County Title by another name. Rick Thomas sold the 120-year old business he and his wife DeAnnah have owned since 1998 to Timios in 2013 in order to expand the company’s horizons and bring it into the 21st century. Part of Timios’ mission, is to “worry so the client doesn’t have to.” They believe that doing things quickly is the most efficient way and strive to put the customer first, doing their best to create complete transparency throughout the process of buying, selling, and refinancing so that everyone knows where they stand. To provide this level of service, Thomas relies on the skills of his escrow officers, Daniele Eyestone, who is fluent in Spanish, and Amber Aston, as well as signing agent Tammy Teats. All three women bring a breadth of knowledge and years of experience to the team at Timios and in Thomas’s words, “do most of the work.” Aston notes that she would like clients to see her as the “light at the end of the tunnel. Buying a house is the biggest investment of your entire life and can be stressful. I want people to know they can ask questions if they need to.” Whether one is looking to buy, sell, or refinance, the team at Timios is able to handle it all. Licensed to transact business throughout the entire state of California, the company has offices in Orland and Willows in addition to its Chico location. Timios means “honest” in Greek, and honesty is truly their policy. They strive to “find a solution to the uncommon problem” and as the landscape of traditional escrow changes with technology, it can be assured that Timios is on the cutting edge. Tv or Dental Implant? THAT IS THE QUESTION!
I’m amazed every time I go to Costco and see people buying new televisions. Usually they buy the largest one that will fit on that orange palate. There is never any hesitation on this purchase or consideration that in less than a few years this process will occur again when something better comes along and the television is obsolete. If only people prioritized their teeth in the same way, rather than the latest smart 4K TV, treatment planning for the best dental options would be easy. All too often, patients merely see the cost of things and not the long-term benefit. They are willing to go buy that TV without hesitation, but have trouble investing in themselves. This is all too obvious at times when discussing implants with patients. I would first say that I believe in presenting options to patients and helping them to make the best decision for their situation, not acting like a salesman by forcing them to buy something they don’t want or need. That being said, in most cases when a tooth is missing, the best, most natural feeling solution is an implant. Dental implants are the best way to replace missing teeth and are designed to blend in with your natural teeth. They are the most natural looking and feeling restoration for replacing missing teeth. Whether you want to replace a single tooth or multiple teeth, implants are a proven, long-lasting alternative to bridges and partial dentures. They can even be used to anchor a denture that won’t stay in place. They are an excellent long-term option for restoring your smile. Implants are an investment in yourself that can last a lifetime, unlike that 80” smart 4K TV in your living room. DR. REJUVENÉ There are few things in life as guaranteed as aging. Our skin begins to sag and lose the elasticity that it once had, it signals to us that age is finally beginning to take its toll with subtle changes including fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration. These subtle changes signifies our skin’s inability to heal itself or regenerate cells in the timeframe that it once did. With summer right around the corner, and the harmful effects of UV radiation being the number one aging agent, there is truly no better time than early in the spring to begin preparing your skin for those coming days in the sun. After all, the longer you can keep your skin collagen-rich and flexible, the longer it will serve you with the youthful glow we all desire.

The Broad Band Light (BBL) procedure is Rejuvené's quintessential anti-aging treatment. It works by emitting bands of visible light into the skin, slowly heating the upper layers of the skin and causing cells to regenerate new collagen. It targets redness, rosacea, and brown spots, effectively bringing to the surface, and eliminating, years of sun-damaged skin. The treatment is administered after providing a topical anesthetic to ensure patient comfort, and takes only minutes to complete. Downtime is nearly non-existent. A series of 3 to 5 treatments is ideal for most patients. Rejuvené's BBL by Sciton device is truly state of the art. This latest technology employs a powerful cooling system to soothe the patient’s skin after treatment and an elegant handpiece for operator finesse and ease of use. It is made by the Sciton company and has been called, "the most complete and versatile broad band light treatment in its class." New evidence from research at Stanford demonstrates that BBLs functionally rejuvenate genes in aged skin cells. Specifically, long-term use of BBL treatments decrease the prevalence of genes that are linked to aging. For this reason, Rejuvené now offers the Forever Young BBL treatment package. This package includes a series of maintenance treatments over the course of one year after the initial package of five treatments is completed. Patients will return every 3–4 months to both maintain the clinical external benefits of the procedure as well as to maximize its physiologic anti-aging benefits. This treatment is truly transformative.

DEFENSE Do you ever feel apprehensive about your safety at home, going to the Plaza, walking around downtown, through Bidwell Park, or even to the grocery store by yourself after dark? Have you or someone you know been a victim of rape, assault, robbery, or home invasion? If so, you are not alone. Many people feel uncomfortable about their safety in Chico. Statistics show that rape in Chico has increased by 16%. Approximately 1.3 rapes are reported every minute in the United States. Rapists are often not caught until they have assaulted as many as 50 victims, and even when they are caught, less that 2% are convicted and sentenced to prison. Of the 22.3 million adolescents in America, 1.8 million have been victims of rape. Children are particularly vulnerable to sexual assault, with 1 out of every 3 girls and 1 out of every 4 boys being sexually assaulted by the time they reach 18 years old. Sadly, 85% of those assaults are committed by someone the victim knows. So, what can you do to avoid being a victim? While learning a system of martial arts can take years of training and discipline to master, basic self-defense techniques and situational awareness do not. In fact, you can learn many of the techniques of situational awareness and self26

protection very quickly. Criminals are looking for the easiest target they can find. Making yourself a less 'easy' target can be relatively simple with a little training and practice. After receiving many calls from concerned adults in Chico, Grandmaster Azad of Azad’s Martial Arts Center in Chico has decided to offer his popular Personal Defense Training program to the public free of charge. This is not a martial arts system, but a no-nonsense method of selfdefense and personal protection techniques and strategies intended to reduce feelings of vulnerability and build self-confidence. PDT will be offered for three different age groups to teach each level the most appropriate techniques for situations they may encounter. Personal Defense Training for Adults is a six-class session offered on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7:00–7:45 p.m. for three consecutive weeks. Classes run through December and class size is limited to 40 participants per session. PDT for Teens is an intensive personal safety program offered M–F from 3:00–4:00 p.m. one week per month free of charge through May. This program is limited to 20 participants per session. PDT for Kids will also be offered free of charge one Tuesday per month at 5:30pm continuing thru May. This class is also limited to 20 participants. All levels and sessions require pre-registration. For more information, or to pre-register for classes, please go to www.azadspdt.com, or call 530.892.AZAD, 530.896.0777. Offering PDT free to the public is one of the many ways Grandmaster Azad is continuing his legacy of giving back to the Chico community, a tradition which has spanned over three decades.

Most of us have heard of sleep related breathing disorders (SRBD). The common ones are snoring, hypopnea, and sleep apnea. These issues disturb our sleep and are medically threatening because they reduce the amount of oxygen in our circulating blood. This problem has a role in the incidence of major problems like heart attack and stroke. But, when we are snoring, or have shallow breathing (hypopnea) or even stop breathing (sleep apnea), we are still asleep! The inability to get to sleep, or stay asleep, is a major problem for many people. There are other types of sleep related issues: restless leg syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, sleep talking, sleep walking, night terrors, etc. In my 35+ years of activity in sleep medicine, one of the most important and perplexing entities, and the hardest to deal with, doesn’t involve sleep. Just the opposite, it is insomnia. Sleep is a wonderful way for our bodies to heal, repair, and replenish themselves. We need to dream (REM sleep) to clear the cobwebs out of our mind—it improves our mental function. Time spent in the deeper sleep levels is where physical rejuvenation (muscles, joints, etc.) occurs. Unfortunately, none of that happens if we are not asleep at all. Insomnia has many causes, many faces, and many characteristics. For some, they just can’t get to sleep. For others, they fall asleep normally, but then awaken a couple of hours later, fully awake, then lay there for an extended time. The loss of a night’s sleep is familiar to all of us. It’s something that can’t ever be recovered. Once it is 28
U P G R A D E D L I V I N G M AG A Z I N E A P R I L 2 0 1 7
gone, it is not retrievable. The mental and physical rejuvenation of sleep is lost for that night, and we suffer from sleep deprivation. It is difficult to diagnose the causes of insomnia. For some, it is diet related. Some people have circadian disorders and tend to function more actively at night than during the day. Some people just can’t put their thought processes to rest when it is time to retire for the night. For some, it may be hormonal or even physical in nature (pain). For others it may be psychological. A lot of patients try to treat the problem with medication. Usually, this can have short-term effects, but long-term relief can diminish with time. There are several things to analyze and discuss in those who suffer from insomnia. Diet, physical activity (or lack of it), prescriptions for medical conditions, use of electronic devices (smartphones, iPads, laptops) while in bed, can have a major effect in keeping us awake. Many people begin the process to end insomnia with medication, but often an approach with fewer side effects can work well in the long term. There are many aspects to sleep apnea. A discussion with a professional trained in managing sleep related disorders can begin the process to acquire a good night’s sleep.

Volunteering helps people and organizations in your community, but did you know it can make you healthier and happier, too? It’s true. See why paying it forward is the gift that keeps on giving. Volunteering provides the opportunity to explore exciting areas of interest and new career options, develop job skills, or keep skills sharp.
U P G R A D E D L I V I N G M AG A Z I N E A P R I L 2 0 1 7
Think about the strengths or skills you have to share and why you want to volunteer. Do you want to meet new people, learn about a new career path, or help those less fortunate? And consider how much time are you willing to commit.
It can also help you meet like-minded people, widen your circle of friends, and build community connections. Senior citizens typically receive the greatest health boost from volunteering as it provides them a sense of purpose and physical and social activity that they may otherwise miss after retirement.
If you’re hesitant to start, look for volunteer opportunities that are suitable for multiple people so you can bring your kids, spouse, or friends. You’ll share your individual talents while deepening your relationships for a greater good.
Helping others feels good and makes you feel good, too. Some people refer to this mental benefit as a "helper's high." Volunteering provides people with a sense of purpose, added confidence and belief in their abilities. As a result, they often develop stronger coping, relationship, and leadership skills.
At Enloe Medical Center, our 400plus volunteers make up the largest volunteer organization in Chico. We have opportunities for adults, as well as junior and senior high school volunteers. Roles might include working in Guest Services and the Enloe Gift Shop, lending support to patients and staff, assisting at the Cancer Center, or serving as a pet team or spiritual support volunteer. Visit enloe.org/volunteer or call 530.332.4575 to learn more or to fill out an application.
If that’s not enough for you, researchers at Cornell University and the University of Michigan found that adults who volunteer are more likely to live longer, enjoy better physical health, and have lower rates of depression later in life. Volunteers have also been found to have lower blood pressure and stress levels, which contribute to improved long-term health.

BEAUTY Q&A BEAUTY FROM THE INSIDE OUT
If you to want to feel beautiful inside and out, then a day spa experience may be your answer. You will feel your senses enlightened as soon as you pass through the door. The fragrance of soothing essential oils, the slow calm music, the beautiful and tranquil décor, the dim lighting, and the quiet voice greeting you is the serene beginning to your treatment. Your spa visit is not just about the benefits of your service, but a well-deserved day of pampering with robes, a recovery lounge, refreshments, and a private accommodation for showers and your personal items. You will experience it all at a day spa. To relax from the demanding lifestyle of today, your mind, body, and soul will benefit from a spa facial or relaxation massage. A spa facial tailors a treatment to your skin type to give you a refreshed and hydrated glow. And the list of improvements goes on and on—exfoliation of dead skin cells, brightened skin tone, stimulation of blood flow (which delivers nutrients and oxygen to help regenerate new skin cells), a reparative balance of oils and water, and defense against premature aging. Who wouldn’t want that? To top it off, you will receive a mini neck and shoulder, hand, and arm massage with a warm hand treatment to add to the pampering. A relaxation or deep tissue massage provides the renewal of your health, healing, and wellness. Not only does a weekly spa 32

COLLAGEN: The Building Block of Beautiful Skin! Collagen is one of the principal components of young, healthy skin. Together with elastin fibers, collagen forms the support structure that keeps skin firm and hydrated. It is made up of a chain of amino acids that provides a framework for nerve fibers, hair follicles, blood vessels, and oil and sweat glands. Since healthy collagen cells are what bind moisture into the skin, the aging process can decrease the ability to stay hydrated, so the skin can become dry, less supple, and dull. We stop producing collagen at about age 35, but technology has brought us ways to rebuild our collagen levels! With the use of lasers, a "wound response" is created to trick our skin into rebuilding and creating new cells. It's like when you scrape your skin- a scab forms almost immediately to protect from further injury and rebuild healthy skin underneath. Lasers and Microneedling introduce a thermal injury to the collagen cells, forcing them to protect themselves by regenerating new, healthy cells. Once collagen is revived, the cells are firmer and plumper, smoothing out surface lines that have formed due to dehydration and lack of elasticity. These treatments are tolerated well by all skin types, but sensitivity to pain is subjective, and there is some down-time with the microneedling procedure. A consultation is recommended to decide your course of treatment. Call the Derm Bar at 530.342.2672 to see if this collagenenhancing procedure is for you! Bed of Roses to War of Roses To say divorce is difficult is an understatement. Even under the best of circumstances it’s a major change in one’s life. Change is tough—and one way to help your kids (and yourself) is to manage the impact of the change. A recent study revealed a 45% divorce rate in America. At some point in the process many ask “what effects will this have on my kids?” There are numerous studies on the effects of divorce on kids. However, few studies look at the effects on kids when the parents stay married—when they really should be getting divorced. In a “typical” divorce, the kids are impacted to some moderate or significant degree. That said, many kids are resilient and navigate the process relatively well. Younger children often take cues from their parents as to how to frame the changes they are seeing in their families. This change in what was once familiar is often difficult for children and teens. Teens will sometimes use the chaos in the family to blame the parents for their own bad behaviors. Then, out of guilt, the parents will allow the bad behaviors as a way to assuage the teen. This often sets a bad precedent. In addition, parents will sometimes use older children and teens to pass messages onto the other parent. I don’t recommend either of these strategies. Modern modalities of divorce include Collaborative Divorce (CD). In short, CD utilizes teams to help the parties resolve disputes out of court and in a relatively peaceful manner. It is generally much healthier and more positive for all members of the family. Finally, I usually recommend a Co-Parenting plan. This is a set plan designed to maintain consistency between both parents’ homes. It generally addresses homework, curfew, dating, respect for the other parent, boundaries, etc. It sounds challenging, and it can be. However, watch the movie War of the Roses then ask yourself—could we do better than this? who happened to be an optometrist. He raved about the job and encouraged Michael to think about pursuing a similar track someday. Driven by the excitement he saw in his friend’s older brother, he decided to do just that. When Michael turned 18, he left his hometown of Wattsburg, and set off for Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he majored in natural sciences. Relying on his keen ability to focus, which he learned at the dairy farm, Michael sailed through college, set on the goal of becoming an optometrist. After graduation he was accepted to Pennsylvania College of Optometry and completed his schooling a few years later. Michael took up his first job as an eye doctor in Baltimore, Maryland, but quickly realized that Baltimore wasn’t at all where he wanted to live. He decided instead to join his friend in California, crash on his couch, and work as a river raft guide in Coloma until his ideal job opened up. When it didn’t, he moved to Sacramento and worked there for 2 ½ years while still keeping his eyes open to any opportunities further north. Eventually, in 2014, he found a job posting on Berkeley Optometry’s website for an optometrist in Chico. He called on the posting and spoke to Dr. Anthony Rudick, one of the owners of North Valley Eye Care and Ridge Eye Care. The position was a perfect fit. Within a few weeks, he broke his lease, quit his job in Sacramento, and moved to Chico. He’s been here since. Since his arrival in Chico, Dr. Merry has focused on comprehensive optometry, as well as management of ocular disease, glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, and dry eye. As he is quick to note, dry eye is a huge issue in the northern valley and a large majority of the patients he sees suffer from it to some degree. He, of course, is happy to help and derives his feeling of success from easing his patients’ symptoms.
From Dairy TO
Dry Eyes Born to dairy farmers in a small, rural town just outside of Eerie, Pennsylvania, the world of medicine was a far cry from Michael Merry’s beginnings. A seemingly misplaced first step on the path towards becoming a doctor, the
fundamentals he learned on the farm set the groundwork necessary to succeed not only in life, but also in the demanding world of medicine. Adhering to a daily routine on the farm instilled the importance of consistency in Michael and helped him understand the value of a solid work ethic. It was this same work ethic and determination that would later lead him through school.
When Dr. Merry isn’t working at North Valley Eye Care or Ridge Eye Care, he’s doing what he loves best—spending time interacting with nature. Whether he’s snowboarding in the backcountry, kayaking down one of our area’s beautiful rivers, mountain biking in Upper Park, or spending time with his miniature Australian Shepherd, Dr. Merry is certain that he made the right decision in moving to Chico. We are certainly glad that he did.
Michael left the farm as soon as he could drive and took up a job at a local ski resort working as a hotel bellman and ski repair technician. He spent his time there falling in love with nature, riding his bike everywhere he could, and finely tuning his snowboarding skills on the mountain. It was during this time that he met one of his friends’ older brothers

A SUNNY SOLUTION After months of heavy rain and dreary afternoons, it might be hard to imagine the return of triple-digit summer heat. Nobody wants to find themselves sweating inside their own home, but keeping cool often comes at a high price. Jason Smith, owner of Climate & Energy Solutions in Chico, understands this predicament; he makes it his business to help locals lower their energy bills, stay comfortable, and look out for the environment every day.
Helping his godparents manage an apartment complex before he moved to Chico, Jason viewed routine building repairs as personal challenges. “The only thing we couldn’t do was heating and air conditioning, because you had to be licensed for it,” he recalls. So he studied the repairman's work and quickly caught on—and when he moved to Chico in 1997, he earned his contractor’s license on the first try. It didn’t take long before he was running the company now known as Climate & Energy Solutions. This established a pattern for Jason: when residential solar panels entered the market in 2009, he looked at the newer technology as another challenge for him to accept. The first house he fitted with solar panels was his own, and by his second installation he was working for a local celebrity. Now solar energy makes up an impressive portion of Climate & Energy Solutions’ business, and sales continue to grow as the public learns more about their environmental impact. There are, of course, other reasons to go solar—the switch can save families several thousands of dollars a year, for one. Solar panels
Still, Jason makes it clear that Climate & Energy Solutions truly focuses on providing energy-saving solutions. If a solar panel merely acts as a Band-Aid to a more extensive problem, Jason’s team will investigate all potential energy hogs and get to work fixing them. The most costly offenders often hide in plain sight: old pool pumps, deteriorating insulation, old inefficient heating and air units, and extra refrigeration (especially old garage freezers that work doubly hard in summer heat) all add unnecessary dollars to energy bills. Climate & Energy Solutions’ team and hired contractors can address these issues in one fell swoop, and they often go above and beyond to meet the customer’s desires. Jason remembers constructing a solarpowered pottery barn for another customer, helping her dream project come to life. It’s all about helping customers save as much as possible with the most energy efficient options and products. Ultimately, Jason’s company allows him to jump-start change in the surrounding community. Every house presents a new challenge for Jason to tackle, and he and his team are eager to take on the task. “If we are doing our job right, we are saving our customers money and keeping them comfortable,” Jason says.

Climate & Energy Solutions is a full-service Heating, Air Conditioning, Solar and home energy contracting company. They also offer heating and air repair, duct replacement, insulation, and home energy audits. In addition, they can provide replacement options from energy efficient windows to variable speed pool pumps. These days, half of the company’s yearly revenue comes from solar panel installation, but Jason is quick to point out that solar energy is just one element of a more complicated system. “Everything works together,” he says. Knowing which appliances to update or remove is half the battle in lowering energy consumption (and subsequent bills). Luckily, this sort of puzzle is exactly what drew Jason to his career.
have a typical payback period of five years, Jason says; they essentially eliminate power bills while increasing property value. And for anyone worried about the aesthetic look, rest assured: solar panels aren’t restricted to one side of the house, and Jason’s company works with customers to provide color options and example photos before installation begins.

NEW AGAIN KITCHEN REMODELING PRESENTS HOUSE CALL:
WIDE OPENED SPACES
THE CLIENT Beth moved up to Chico to attend college at Chico State and, like so many before her, fell in love with this little town of ours. Naturally, when it came time to graduate and move forward, Chico’s pull was simply too much, and Beth couldn’t find it in herself to escape its swimmingfilled summers, colorful autumns, unseasonably warm winters, and blooming springs. She met the love of her life, Donovan, during her time at Chico State, but even he couldn’t get her to leave. It took a fair share of time, but Donovan eventually realized Chico’s gravitational pull was too much for any one man to compete with. He packed up his things in early 2015, moved to Chico, and got back together with Beth. The two decided to buy a home together in May of 2015, further sealing their commitment to Chico. The 1957 built 2-story home was a classic Chico charmer with a great set of bones and a delightful yard to boot. As with many Chico charmers though, the exterior doesn’t always tell the full story. The interior needed a fair share of work but, considering the pricetag, Beth and Donovan were both more than willing to trade a bit of elbow grease for the reduced price. They decided to work on the home as time and money allowed, slowly updating it bit-by-bit, prioritizing items based on necessity. 38

THE CALL The home truly was indicative of its age with no major creature comforts to speak of. Void of insulation, the home was drafty in the winter and blazing hot in the summer. It didn’t help that it was also without an air conditioning system and covered in single-pane windows. The couple added insulation throughout the home, installed a proper AC system to help with those scorching summer months, and replaced the single-pane windows with dual-pane to ensure that the AC stayed right where it needed to. The flooring on both levels was shag carpet with a good deal of staining, so they replaced that as well and even redid the upstairs bathroom all by themselves. Beth loved to cook and although the couple were clearly crafty with DIY, constantly washing dishes by hand was a DIY she could do without. Beth told Donovan she was going to buy a new dishwasher and Donovan suggested they just renovate the whole kitchen. As nothing in the kitchen was updated, and the layout was miserable to say the least, the two decided it made more sense to take care of everything at once rather than piece it together. They set out to discover what their dream kitchen truly looked like.
Beth and Donovan visited a kitchen remodeling store on the west side of town and found themselves shocked not only at the bid they received, but the lack of customer service that came with it. Disappointed, they turned onto Park Avenue in the direction of Chico’s big box retailers hoping for a different experience. They came upon New Again Kitchen Remodeling before turning left onto E. Park Avenue and decided to take a moment to see if their experience would be different inside. They entered the showroom and met Ric, who greeted them with a welcoming smile. Ric asked how he could help and Beth told him about the kitchen they were hoping to remodel. Beth knew she wanted white cabinets because the kitchen space was so small and didn’t want to close it in with darker colors. Ric showed her options and suggested countertops that would complement the look she was going for. They browsed through past issues of Upgraded Living to get an idea of other kitchens they had completed and took their time selecting the options that were right for them. Beth and Donovan were immediately impressed with how friendly and helpful Ric was and appreciated the vision he had for their kitchen.
Tile backsplash
THE CURE The team from New Again arrived on schedule and worked with the couple’s contractors to put everything together in a timely manner. They installed white shaker cabinets, a Dawn stainless steel sink, and Bedrosian eclipse/ marina backsplash tile. The original kitchen had a wall separating itself from a small, defunct laundry room. Donovan, a twenty year veteran of the commercial construction industry, removed the wall himself and added the extra 100 square feet previously occupied by the laundry room into the kitchen, considerably opening the floor
CONNECT
plan. They finished the project off with brand new appliances while Beth and Donovan installed a new laminate floor. The project was completed on schedule and at a far lower cost than the first bid they received, which in itself was a huge win. To top it off, the kitchen was completely transformed into a bright and beautiful space that is now far larger than the original layout. To say that Beth loves her new kitchen would be an understatement. To say that the kitchen has changed her life, would be to quote her word-for-word. When asked if she would recommend New Again to friends and family, she replied with, “Absolutely! In fact, I already have! We’re having Ric and New Again remodel our downstairs bathroom next.” Donovan continued, “I was really impressed with Ric’s ability to look at this space and figure out the maximum potential for it. He figured out how to make the most room and how to make it the most efficient. I told Beth we needed to get a designer to figure this all out on the computer and, with Ric, we got just that.” Better yet, as so many clients have before them, they received the design work at no added cost.
When asked about advice for those looking to remodel their kitchens and bathrooms, they both agree, “Take your time and know your timelines. We had to wait awhile because they were so booked. Once you decide to do it, don’t rush it. Sit on it for a few days and you’ll make the right decisions. They took a really rough space and turned it into something beautiful.”
PHOTOS BY ERIN HANSEN
They left New Again with samples of flooring, cabinet doors, tile, and countertops to get a better idea of how it would look in their kitchen. Ric encouraged them to take their time and see how each felt in their space as each kitchen is different. They placed each sample in its proper place in the kitchen and let them sit for a couple days to get a better idea of how they liked it. Without any pressure to speak of, they took their time and eventually landed on the perfect combination for their kitchen. They called Ric and set a date for their install.
With another kitchen renovation completed beautifully on time and on budget, and with another happy couple on the books, it’s no surprise that New Again continues to make a name for itself as the definitive kitchen and bathroom remodeling company in Chico. If you’re in a situation similar to Beth and Donovan’s and could use a hand in modernizing your kitchen or bathroom, give them a call today at 530.899.2888.

THE ART & SCIENCE
of
LIGHTING A ROOM A comprehensive lighting plan can make any space look and function better. The classic three-part design includes task, ambient, and accent lighting. Learn how choosing the right products can put your home in its best light. FUNCTION FIRST Start with task lighting. Consider the type of work you do in the space, then choose fixtures with features that meet your needs. In the kitchen, pendants and under-cabinet lighting illuminate food-prep and other work areas, making tasks easier and more enjoyable. Available in a variety of finishes and shade shapes, pendant lights provide the perfect opportunity to add color and style to the center of the home. At the bathroom mirror, arrange lighting to evenly illuminate both sides of the face and eliminate shadows for shaving and makeup application. Consider a combination of a vanity bar above the mirror and and wall sconces on either side. Floor lamps, table lamps, and track lighting bring focused light to home offices, craft rooms, and reading spaces. WALL-TO-WALL ILLUMINATION Ambient lighting is the second piece of a three-part plan. It’s that overall wash of illumination that fills a room. Ceiling fixtures —from flush mounts to chandeliers—wall sconces, and other broad-reaching fixtures, brighten the space from wall to wall. In multipurpose areas like the dining room, use dimmer switches to dial up the brightness when homework or crafts are spread out on the table, then bring it down to set the mood for intimate dinners. 40

THE BLING Accent lighting is used draw the eye to interesting details. It’s not required, but when done well it can change the mood of a room. Track lighting and adjustable recessed lighting are versatile options to enhance textures—like brick walls or stone fireplaces —and to spotlight wall art. Lamps can be used as decorative elements or to add a warm glow to a dark corner. PRO TIPS • Be mindful of scale. Choosing undersized fixtures is a common decorating mistake. When in doubt, always go bigger. For example, dining room fixtures should have a diameter of ½ to ⅔ the width of the table. • Lighting collections can pull together a decorating scheme and give your space a polished look. • In large spaces, consider controlling zones with multiple light switches. Ready to design a lighting plan for your home? The experts at Build.com can help you find the perfect fixtures for every space.

DECLUTTER & CLEAN
for Spring
Tis the season to clean the clutter. One thing I have learned over my 30 years of design and decorating is that making your space clean and decluttered will help you think better and help you plan more efficiently for your next design project. This is the time of year to get rid of items you don’t need or use, which will allow more space for new, improved, updated items for your projects. Below are a few quick and easy ideas to organize and declutter for spring. ENTRY WAY
• Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors • Add new throw pillows to change the look Hint: Use tiny Adhesive hooks to hide cords from lamps and attach to furniture. BATHROOMS AND KITCHENS • Clean out all cabinets and shelves • Eliminate all unused products and expired food
• Replace area rugs with a fresh look
• Mop floors
• Clean or replace light fixture
• Clean and scour sinks, countertops, appliances, and fans
Hint: A neat way to organize your shoes at the front door is to use a sturdy, attractive basket.
• Clean out refrigerator
CLOSETS • Empty closets and dust shelves, baseboards, walls etc. • Get rid of unworn, out of date items Hint: Use a can tab to hook top hangers together to save half the space in your closet. Fold sheet sets inside pillow cases.
• Replace rugs and towels to change the look Hint: To add storage space in a bathroom, add a shelf over the door for items that are not used often. Use baskets and rails in Kitchens or bathrooms for decorative added storage. In the kitchen use a magazine rack or file holders to separate and store lids and cookie sheets.
LIVING ROOM • Dust all shelves, baseboards, light fixtures, and walls • Polish and dust all decorative items • Launder or professionally clean all furniture cushions and window treatments • Sort, organize, and donate books, magazines, games and toys • Vacuum air vents and fan blades 42

SPR ING GARDENING GUIDE
Spring is in full bloom! From the seasoned gardening pro to the ambitious beginner, we’ve put together a small guide to help you flourish this April. KNOW THY-SOIL Soil is the foundation for any plant and knowing how to keep your soil healthy can make or break a good garden. Healthy soil is alive with organisms, beneficial bacteria, and mycorrhizal! Adding compost to your soil will improve the soil structure, increase the population of micro-and macroorganisms, and provide vital nutrients to your green babies. Did you know that earthworms make gold? Well, they might not be making the kind of gold you can wear but they do make castings that are so incredibly beneficial for healthy soil that we call them gardening gold. LOVED BY THE SUN There are plants that can thrive in shade and those that can do very well in our blistering summer sun. Knowing what to plant where is so important. Some of our favorite plants that love the shade in our local Chico area are heucheras, ferns, hostas, and ivy. Some plants that can do very well in full afternoon sun are ceanothus ‘california lilac,' coreopsis, euphorbias and 44

many salvia varieties like our local native Salvia Clevelandii. Speaking of local natives, planting natives to your area is also a great way to ensure a happy and beautiful garden. Some of our local pollinators even depend on it! For example, the Pipevine Swallowtail butterfly population depends on the Dutchman’s Pipevine, a deciduous vine. HYDOZONES Whether you have a drip irrigation set up, are watering by hand, or have the “if it lives, it lives” attitude, grouping plants with similar water needs together is crucial and often overlooked. Now more than ever before, how we utilize water can have a major impact on our environment and our wallets. An easy way to hydrozone your garden is by planting groups in designated areas. It can be as simple as making a small sketch of your garden and marking sections like “drought tolerant,” “high water intake,” “moderate water intake” and then adding a list of plants that suit those needs. Happy planting everyone!

DIY: Assorted Herbs So you’ve gone “paperless” and now your mail sorter sits empty and alone. Give it new life and let it sort some fragrant, delicious herbs instead! So many everyday items can be transformed into fun and unique planters. We found this dated wooden mail sorterat Eighth & Main in Chico, longing for a more earth-friendly purpose. MATERIALS: • Mail sorter • Herbs • Potting soil • Sand paper • Spray paint • Drill • Plastic liner or wood sealer • Craft Paper DIRECTIONS: Start by drilling a small drainage hole into the bottom of each compartment, about ⅜ of an inch. Sand away any glossy finish on your wooden surface before painting. We used a chalk finish paint for a matte look, then updated the hardware with a shiny copper paint for a nice contrast. Use a fun craft paper as a backdrop for your herb labels. Before planting, protect the wood by lining each compartment (we used recycled grocery bags). Be sure to cut drainage holes in your plastic to match up with the holes you drilled. You can also use a plant safe wood sealer. Plant your herbs and enjoy!

Attorney? When Should I See An
That is a difficult question to answer, as everyone has a different experience, education, knowledge, and risk tolerance. There are no hard and fast rules, but if you are arrested by the police, see an attorney as soon as possible. In business and personal life, however, it is more difficult to know when to see an attorney. In my 35 years of practice I have seen clients get into serious trouble when they attempt to do legal things outside of their normal experience. There are many legal areas in which small mistakes can have catastrophic results. For example, if a corporation is not set up and maintained correctly, you may lose its protection if you are sued. There are several situations in which you should always see an attorney, rather than handling it yourself or using the internet. Here are a few: Estate planning (it’s hard to fix mistakes if you are dead), divorce (you know it’s true) business formation and planning, personal injury, auto accident (know your rights), fraud or theft (maybe it will help get something back), large insurance claim (was it fair?). There are many more, but you get the idea. Always seek legal advice before you sign the documents. It is often difficult or impossible to fix a problem if you have already completed the deal. It is unfortunate when a client comes in for advice then tells me they have already signed the documents. Often clients feel bad, angry, or scared and I can’t reasonably do anything to fix the problem. Final words of advice: given that it is April and tax season, if the I.R.S. is after you, get good, professional help. Good luck! PINE CREEK
Where Flowers Bloom Looking out at Pine Creek Flower Farm, and the rows of colorful buds that recently pushed through the ground, the word that comes to mind is content. The tractor is slowly tilling new soil, Piper the dog is chasing her ball, and flowers are turning their faces toward the spring sunshine. It is easy to see why Emma Harris and Craig Piluso fell in love with this plot and why they continue to nurture the land every day.
When the owners of California Organic Flowers retired, Emma knew she wanted to fill that hole (with soil and seeds). They’ve been producing ethically grown flowers ever since. “I’ve always loved flowers. My mom had Daffodils and Crocuses. Being around them was my happy place,” Emma says. However, working on a farm is very different. There’s constant planting, weeding, and harvesting like crazy. Even with the sweaty “nastiness” and swarms of bugs that come with farming, neither of them would change a thing. Craig tells me “It’s very gratifying to take care of something, harvest it, and have it support you but bring people joy too. We’re in the happiness business.”
Emma and Craig began their journey growing flowers after spending years with their hands in nature, one growing vegetables and the other harvesting almonds. Emma grew up on the East Coast, where she found passion in slow food and local, organic growing. She moved to Chico in 2010, after securing a nine month long internship on a local farm. Every day for months, Emma would bike by an amazing organic flower farm and slowly the excitement she had for slow food turned to a longing for slow flowers. “Food is awesome. Everyone needs food but I needed flowers,” she says. Craig was born and raised Butte County. He worked for a manufacturing company, where he learned the ins and outs of more technical farming methods. His uncle owned property with nut trees, and Craig enjoyed putting his knowledge to work during picking time, where he helped harvest with the crew. The two met through mutual friends and their partnership grew to encompass not only each other, but also acreage for a flower farm. 51
“Our flowers are stop you in your tracks beautiful. They’re whimsical and romantic.” –Emma Harris
Happy is an accurate description for the emotion a bouquet brings. Be it a surprise from a loved one or treat to yourself, bringing those bright petals to your nose is a gift like nothing else. Supporting a local flower farm is particularly special, as you know the flowers were freshly picked, are without preservatives, and have only traveled a few miles from farm to stand. Grocery store flowers are packed on ice and shipped from all over the world. Most are weeks old and have nowhere near the fragrance saturation as fresh blooms. Emma and Craig also pride themselves on offering unique varieties and combinations that you wouldn’t typically find in a grocery store bouquet. We’re told people stumble upon Pine Creek Flowers at Saturday morning market and end up coming back every week. “Our flowers are stop you in your tracks beautiful. They’re whimsical and romantic,” describes Emma. There’s truly nothing quite like flowers to freshen a space, or provide a special message. Emma and Craig spend hours carefully creating bouquets every Friday evening, and when they place them in their van to be taken to market in the morning, they know those flowers have a special mission. For thousands of years, flowers have been symbols of celebration, condolence, and love. Bouquets are placed bedside when you’re born, arrangements are pinned to lapels and tucked into hair during times of romance; some are sent with a “Get Well” card. Flowers have a constant presence in our lives, from beginning to end. We wouldn’t have it any other way!
YOU CAN FIND PINE CREEK FLOWERS AT THE CHICO CERTIFIED FARMERS MARKET ON SATURDAY AND THE UPCOMING THURSDAY NIGHT MARKET. KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR UPDATES ON A ROADSIDE FLOWER STAND BEING COMPLETED IN THE SUMMER AS WELL. 52

INGREDIENT OF THE MONTH:
Lettuce be glad,
IT'S SPRING!
After a long winter, our bodies crave sunlight and the vitamins and minerals found in fresh foods. In earlier times, when the choice of foods was limited to what was available in season or what was stored, the fresh green leaves and shoots of springtime provided a change of diet and a tonic for the body. Now days, fresh produce is available year-round, but the best produce is still found in season at your local farmers market. April is a great month to eat more fresh greens. Lettuce salads are easy and delicious and can pack a real nutritional punch! Lettuce and other salad greens hit their peak in gardens and at the farmers market in April. Loose leaf, bibb, and romaine lettuces come in a range of colors and leaf shapes that will delight you. Select lettuce varieties with richly colored leaves of dark burgundy, speckled, or deep green leaves for the highest amounts of vitamins and minerals. For incredible freshness and best selection, get your lettuce from the person who grew it. Most farmers pick just hours before bringing to market. Keep your lettuce fresh by washing and spinning or blotting dry. Place loosely in a plastic bag and gently squeeze out the air. Seal the bag and poke a few pin holes in both sides of the bag. Store in crisper drawer. Rinse and reuse the bag. Article Courtesy of Chico Certified Famers Market.
