FROM THE PUBLISHER

In all honesty, Upgraded Living was never meant to progress as far as it has. Any close friend will tell you that prior to starting the magazine, the chances of my sticking with a project or job for any more than six months hovered right around zero. What started as a real estate magazine with the sole intention of advertising homes quickly evolved and turned into something far larger than I ever intended.

UPGRADED LIVING STAFF AVEED KHAKI Publisher/Owner

This edition marks our 100th issue of the magazine and we couldn’t be more proud of what it has become. Over the past eight years, the magazine has profiled countless local legends, up-and-comers, and everyone in between. Each and every story has sewn us deeper into our community and reminded each one of us why we love it so. We’ve been blessed with an incredible staff at Upgraded Living who has made this evolution possible, and I would like to take this space in this issue to thank each and every one of them, past and present alike, for having had a hand in making the magazine what it is. Your dedication to the publication and those featured within it has been nothing short of remarkable. Finally, I would like to thank all of you readers for picking up the magazine issue-after-issue and supporting us and our advertisers as you have over the past 100 months. We couldn’t have done it without you!

COOL KIDS GRANT AND WALKER Every day is full with the possibility of an adventure. At the hub of every great adventure is the desire to do something significant. Each adventure has a different outcome — an amusing anecdote, a suspenseful story, or maybe a thrilling tale! Every moment created in our lives is pinpointed on the spoke that exemplifies our life. Only those with passion and determination are brave enough to venture to the rim, to live life to its greatest potential. Grant and Walker are two brothers who took their dreams in their own hands by grabbing life by the handle bars. Their goal: bike across the country and raise $10,000 for clean water in developing countries. Through their project 4 Wheels for a Thirsty World, they raised money by asking for donations. Though these brothers did not reach their goal by the end of the trip, they still raised an astounding $8,000!

The trip was 44 days long, and for 43 days Grant and Walker biked and biked and biked — a total of 4,100 miles total! They traveled through a total of 10 states: Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and Virginia. On average, they biked 95 miles a day. Some of their favorite places to visit were the scenic Grand Tetons in Wyoming and the beautiful coast of Virginia. Nothing could stop Grant and Walker from continuing their journey. They traveled through horrible rain storms and scorching temperatures. For those 43 days, the boys carried 20 pounds of everything they needed on their bikes — from sleeping bags to snacks to spare clothes. Their cozy beds and the comfort of home were soon replaced by the nature that surrounded them. Many times Grant and Walker would sleep on the side of the road.

Throughout their adventure, Grant and Walker met a variety of people. “Everybody was nice and they all asked how they could help us,” Grant recalls. The boys must have shared their story over one hundred times, yet it never failed to amaze people! The most memorable day for these courageous brothers was the first day in Kansas. Every direction they looked they were surrounded by flat terrain. Every movement they made was deliberate, for the blazing hot temperature drained all the energy out of them. Yet somehow, Grant and Walker found the valor to continue the long (though half-way finished) journey ahead of them. “This experience has definitely changed me. I am more independent now and I am mentally stronger,” Grant states. It was days such as the challenge in Kansas that made him realize how driven he was. Every day is full with the possibility of an adventure. Whether you are a part of a small adventure, or a huge one similar to Grant’s and Walker’s, each memory you create is one more spoke that will forever be fastened to the fastpaced adventure of life. A Starting Point A long driveway runs from Shasta Ave. to the 60-unit apartment complex; children are racing their bikes, landscapers are blowing fallen leaves from the pavement — all while a sense of security surrounds the entire area. Though The Esplanade House may look like your typical apartment complex — it is something completely different. Michelle, a single mother of two, opens the door to the Co-Op, a children’s development center located in the complex. Her daughter Ruby is playing with toys with a smile on her face as she keeps the daycare’s supervisors busy. Two and a half years ago, Michelle was suffering from addiction. Running out of options in Marysville, there came a point in her life when she ended up leaving

everything behind to look for something new and eventually began the long road to recovery. After becoming clean and sober, she and her two children moved into The Esplanade House to get reestablished and begin a new life. After finishing two semesters of child development at Butte College, Michelle got a job at Enloe, where she currently works as an outpatient housekeeper. She plans to return to Butte in the spring to further develop her studies. Stories of past addiction, stories of former struggle can be heard coming from all corners of the apartment complex. But these stories, much like Michelle’s, all have an ending of victory, a successful conclusion that involves the help provided by The Esplanade House.

By Matthew Manfredi

The Esplanade House began in a basic 12-unit hotel located near the corner of Esplanade and East Ave. The year was 1991. Greg Webb and Dr. Gary Incaudo collaborated and developed a plan to create a family homeless shelter. This early version of the facility would go through many changes before arriving at the current Shasta Ave. location in 2001. Though, throughout the years, their mission statement has remained the same: To provide a safe, healthy and nurturing environment for homeless families while implementing a goaloriented program designed to help homeless parents and children move from crisis to self-sufficiency. Counseling for addiction recovery, domestic violence, and financial stability have always been included in Webb’s and CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

Incaudo’s plan but today, the support system has progressed into strategic, methodic and mandatory path that makes success realistic and reachable for all Esplanade House residents. Along with resident perseverance, success takes an effort from the community and volunteers and professionals lending a helping hand every step of the way: “We wouldn’t be able to do it without all the volunteers,” says program manager Eloise Campbell. From the beginning, a partnership was formed with Community Action Agency (CAA), a local nonprofit that receives grant money to run the program and guarantee health and security for the children of The Esplanade House. The CAA is just one of the many outlets that makes everything possible. The donations made by the community — funds, clothing, cooking utensils or food — all come together to make a difference to each of the residents at The Esplanade House. With the holidays upon us, The Esplanade House prepares for the several events that happen through the month of December. The Americana Corvette Club, Chico News and Review, and the National Charity League all provide a fun and

exciting Christmas experience for the children of the families of the Esplanade House. Xavier, one of the many resident children of The Esplanade House, watches as his friend, Charlie, rides wheelies on his BMX bike. “It’s a drug-free place. It’s changed my family’s life and I think it’s changed everybody here,” says Xavier. “There’s just no harm here.” The boys continue to race their bikes around the complex, occupied with too much fun to notice the recent winter chill of the November afternoon — living proof of what The Esplanade House has succeeded at doing the last two decades and will continue to do for years to come.

THE $500,000 QUESTION:

BY RENEE MICHEL AND JOE SWEENEY, FINANCIAL ADVISORS WITH ASSET MANAGEMENT GROUP

HAVE YOU SAVED ENOUGH TO RETIRE COMFORTABLY? To most, half a million dollars is a lot of money. It is also more than the average 55 year old currently has saved in retirement plan.1 In retirement, your savings need to generate income to replace the paycheck that you are no longer receiving. A sustainable annual withdrawal rate is 4%.2 This means that you can withdraw 4% from your account annually, and after 30 years you will still have principal (or money) left over. How much does 4% put in your wallet after taxes? Let’s do the math.

1

Could you live comfortably on this amount? If not, talk to a financial advisor to find out how to increase your savings to meet your retirement needs. .

Hypothetical results are for illustrative purposes only and are not intended to represent the future performance of any investment. Example does not factor in other potential income sources, such as Social Security. Nor does it include compounding or reinvestment of initial amount. Actual tax rates may vary. Federal tax is based on an annual income of $20,600 (source: IRS). State tax is based on an average state tax; individual state tax rates will vary.

Source: EBRI, 2013 Retirement Confidence Survey.

The 4% rule of thumb withdrawal rate was devised by financial planner William Bengen to determine the amount investors can potentially take from savings each year of retirement without running out of money for at least 30 years 2

Hanosh & Hunter Dental Group by Kyleen Bromley

Upon first arriving, I noticed patients interacting with the staff as one might with a close family member; laughing, making jokes, and there was something I almost envied about the connection. I wasn’t sure how a dentist office could feel so warm and friendly until I was led to a room where I got to meet Dr. Scott (as he is known to all his patient’s) and Dr. Beau Hunter personally. Within minutes, it all made sense The two of them had a chemistry that I could not explain, but it resonated with the atmosphere of the office: family. That is the best word I can think to describe what it felt like. As if I was being welcomed in and they appreciated my presence and, in return, I could not help but appreciate them. Dr. Scott has been in the dentistry profession for 25 years. While speaking with him, I could see him light up when talking about what he does on a daily basis. I couldn’t help but be mesmerized

by his passion. Soon I became as excited as the doctors were over the technology they have available at their practice: 3D imaging, cad cam same day crowns, oral surgery, implants, dentures, traditional orthodontics, invisalign, root canals, IV sedation, and oral appliances to treat sleep apnea and snoring. All terms that would normally bring fear to my heart and an ache to my tooth, but here, I felt safe and curious. I found myself with a compulsion to be a part of what they had accomplished, and quickly felt the urge to make a long-awaited and much needed appointment. Dr. Scott and Dr. Hunter have put a lot of care into finding proven technologies that will benefit their patients of all ages and allow families to have all of their dental needs met at one place. Their office provides options that one may not expect to find in the small town of Paradise; technology that both of the doctors have put great attention to detail into researching. The time and consideration Dr. Scott and Dr. Hunter devote to their practice is just one of many things that makes it special. It is more than just the chemistry they share, but the commitment to exceptional patient care. Outside of the office, Dr. Hunter is a fantastic artist and woodworker. He showed me a wooden skull he carved in dental school to help him memorize head and neck anatomy.

His attention to detail is impressive. He believes his dentistry is functional art, and enjoys taking the time to be proud of it. It was Dr. Hunter’s idea to go out to the construction site outside the office for photos. As it turned out, that was the breaking ground for their new office. For the doctors, the new office is much more than just a building, it is their dream. As both Dr. Scott and Dr. Hunter stood on the small mound of dirt that overlooked the grounds of their new office, the smiles were genuine. Not just because they got along so well, but because they both understood what it meant to have this dream come true. I could see the pride on their faces as they stood looking at the fantastic future they were creating for both their patients and their community. It was all enough for me to actually want to get my teeth cleaned, knowing that I would leave smiling as the patients before me had.

CONNECT

It was a crisp autumn day in Paradise when I met Dr. Scott Hanosh and Dr. Beau Hunter. As I walked to their office, I could hear the click of my heels and the distant sound of tractors moving dirt at a construction site nearby. There was something comforting about it, but I wasn’t sure why.

Ring in the Season of Giving By Alyssa Worley

Positioned on the sidewalk, receiving intermittent gusts of warm air from whichever shop they have set up in front of, bell ringers stand. Their red kettles hang, awaiting the clang of change or silent thrill of dollar bills. For 125 years, the Salvation Army has been providing locals a place for accessible donating and those less fortunate in our community with support. Starting in 1891, an officer named Captain Joseph McFee recognized the incredible need in the homeless communities of San Francisco. Working on the docks, one day he took action and grabbed a big pot they used for cooking. Beginning the long standing mantra “keep the pot boiling,” McFee urged passersby to throw in change to help. People joyfully ringing bells, cold noses matching the red kettle next to them, has become a mark of the holiday season’s arrival ever since. 20

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM DECEMBER 2015

New to our area, Lieutenants Craig and Arwyn Rodriguera have been working with the Salvation Army stationed in Chico for a little over 5 months. With fresh perspective, Ltnt. Craig says “what’s interesting about Chico is I’ve never seen a place so giving.” We have about 95 percent volunteers when it comes to kettles, stirring the pot so to speak in the heads of Chico’s Salvation Army employees. Knowing they have a great donor base creates opportunity to further educate and support the people who use their services. Bridging the food need with supported resources is the goal in helping a person achieve success and is ultimately the mission of the Salvation Army. A man whose career has been in helping students achieve their ambitions is Professor Kenneth Derucher. After retiring from his position as Dean of the College of Engineering, Computer Science and Construction Management, he finds new

fulfillment in being a bell ringer for the Salvation Army. Seven years later, he gives about 150 hours of free time every holiday season no matter the circumstance. “One year it rained, really poured and my umbrella got ruined. Yeah, sometimes you go home a little tired and soaking wet but you’re out there knowing it’s for a good cause and that’s a good feeling,” says Kenneth. Story after story is heard about people who have given to Kenneth’s kettle and who he has had conversation with on the streets. He has experienced immense kindness over the years, like one woman who grabbed the top of his coat jacket and zipped it up cozily, while scorning his not wearing a hat in the freezing weather. The woman’s husband brought Kenneth hot coffee and he had to sip it down, pretending he liked coffee (he doesn’t.)

Parents reach deep into their pockets for change as their child waits excitedly. The money is dropped in the kettle by little hands. Coin by coin, each falls with a clink and a small thrill is had by all; this is the reason Kenneth and his wife continue volunteering. Sometimes they barely make minimum wage standing for hours but Kenneth knows every contribution counts towards the big picture. With many existing charities, it can be difficult to decide which one to donate to. The Salvation Army has been helping our

county for 127 years. 83 cents out of every dollar made goes directly back to our city. Last year the Red Kettle program raised $137, 232.48. This year with the desire to grow their educational opportunities, along with youth enrichment and adult rehabilitation programs, the target goal is $150,000. The lieutenants are confident that with the generous support and hearts of Chico this is an attainable goal. “Chico always shows up!” Ltnt. Craig says with confidence. The winter season is upon us, bringing times of thankfulness and giving. With volunteers like Kenneth Derucher, many people in our city will be able to have warmer, fuller and happier holidays among friends and family. Consider supporting the Salvation Army the next time you cross paths with a merry bell ringer. Chances are you will walk away with a smile, too.

GIVE BACK

An older woman came to donate once, Kenneth noting the holes in her pants and lack of a coat. She reached into a big bag, pulling out crumpled dollar bills equaling 40 dollars. Kenneth asked, “Are you really sure you want to do that?” She replied “Yes. I’m sure. I do this once a year and save all year long. I have four children, all boys, and at one point in time each one has needed the Salvation Army and I need to pay it back.”

YOUR HEALTH

Give the Gift of Health Along with stocking stuffers and brightly wrapped presents, how about giving the gift of health this year? One simple way is to get a flu shot. This will not only protect you but those around you – especially elderly, very young or chronically ill relatives or friends that you may spend time with. They are at highest risk for becoming very ill or worse if they catch the flu. Each year in the United States influenza (the flu) causes illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths. Already this flu season two deaths have been reported in California, a baby and an adult under 65. Flu viruses circulate October through May and peak December through February. The best prevention is to get an annual vaccine as early as possible before the flu spreads widely. That’s the California Department of Public Health’s recommendation for everyone 6 months of age and older, including pregnant women. Some cannot be vaccinated, so those of us who do protect them. Flu shield Get a flu shot; it’s the single best protection against the flu. Cough or sneeze into your sleeve; if using tissue throw it in the trash and wash your hands right away. Sanitize your hands often with alcohol sanitizer or soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. Stay home when you are ill and try to limit contact with others to keep from

infecting them. Enloe held several free flu vaccine clinics this season and has no others scheduled, but flu vaccine is available at pharmacies and doctors’ offices. Flu shots are covered by insurance. Signs, symptoms & treatments Flu symptoms are fever or feeling feverish (not everyone will have a fever), cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, fatigue, and some may experience vomiting and diarrhea (children more than adults). If you get the flu, treat the symptoms with rest and fluids. Stay home while you are sick to prevent spreading the flu. Also, stay hydrated by drinking lots of liquids; take Tylenol or Advil (acetaminophen or ibuprofen) to lower your fever and help with your aches and pains; take a decongestant or use cool mist vaporizers to relieve your congestion; and keep your head elevated. If you have special conditions such as diabetes, asthma, emphysema or heart disease, contact your doctor to be safe. Prescription antiviral drugs are available for those at high risk for complications (children under 2, adults older than 65, pregnant women and people with chronic medical conditions). Others can use them with their health care professional’s discretion. Susie Benson, RN, NPH, CIC is the Infection Prevention & Control Supervisor at Enloe Medical Center.

6. To create a smoky eye, use a grey or br own shadow in the crease of your eye. Along your lid, you can use the same shade you used for your crease, just applied more lightly. Use a pearly white shadow in the corners of the eyes to add some brightness. Lightly blend your shadows together. Add a sheer shimmer powder over your eyelid to create a bit of sparkle and set your shadow. Ali likes MAC mineral powder in the shade “comfort.” 7. Create a “cat eye” effect with black liquid eyeliner. Start thin at the inner corner of your eye and gradually build to a thicker line as you go across your lid. 8. To create bold lashes, start with a lash primer to extend and volumize your lashes. Let the primer dry for at least one minute before applying your mascara. Ali recommends Prep + Prime by MAC. 9. Apply blush to the apples of the cheeks. 10. Top off the look with a bold, matte lip. Ali recommends “Monte Carlo” by NYX.

We see it everywhere; fake designer handbags and jeans,”aftermarket” car parts, even food labeled “natural” or “organic” that isn’t. What about our skin care products? How do we know that what we are buying is the real thing, not a counterfeit or knockoff? Physiciangrade products are ONLY sold at med-spas and physician’s offices. Many skin care items contain prescription-strength ingredients that could have reactions or side effects that only a doctor can monitor. If you are shopping online, you should be wary of diverted or counterfeit products that look very convincing. They may have labels and ingredient lists that are very similar to the genuine article. If it seems too good to be true, it usually is. Deep discounts are a red flag that the products might be fake. Check the manufacturer’s list of approved retailers, or better yet, buy your products from your physician’s office or med-spa. Medspas must have a medical director to oversee the items that are sold, so you can be sure that the staff has been educated in the use of that specific skin care line.Trust your choices to the professionals that do your skin care procedures. If you are getting Botox, or laser procedures, or microdermabrasions, the service providers can assist you with after care, and recommend the best way to maintain your results between appointments. The Derm Bar Med-Spa carries Obagi Medical, SkinCeuticals, and Skin Medica among others. Let us help you find the real product to give you the best skin care for your needs. Derm Bar Med-Spa (530) 3422672 85 Declaration Dr. Suite 100 Chico,CA 95973 29

You might be wondering why I am writing you today. Well, let me preface this letter by telling you that I have been a very good girl. I mean, like, a VERY good girl. Now that you are aware of that, let me tell you my reason for writing you. Today I found myself in a life-sized jewelry box.on Mangrove Avenue. It’s AicoraGems “Jewelry Box”, you might have heard of it before? Yes, that cute building that has the artwork by famed local mural artist Scott Teeple. Yes, that one with the people crawling out of the top. The building that looks like a jewelry box. Well, let me tell you, it really IS a jewelry box! In fact, the treasures inside really are something sparkling and incredible. First I was met at the door by Geralyn, the owner of the shop. I was taken aback by her sparkling eyes and sweet smile. I felt like I was in some kind of dream by how kind she was as she let me in. Then, as she turned to close the door behind me, I was greeted by the most magnificent display of artisan jewelry. The fine jewelry inside is a small representation of the amazing work that she does, but even then, they still had my mouth watering and my eyes lit up. I am pretty sure I might have danced a little with excitement. Let me repeat myself, just to make sure you believe me. I have been REALLY good this year. Now, I want you to know, Geralyn will keep a “Wish List” for you! She offers it for good girls and boys like me to let you know what we’d like to find under the tree this year. In fact, she even said if I wanted I could have her customize my old jewelry to create a piece with my personal style and she includes a special book to document the design and jewelry making process. A complete custom design can take many weeks and the price varies for time and materials to make your desires

come true. If you have gold, she transforms it beautifully and any extra gold can be used toward labor costs. You wouldn’t have to lift a finger! And I know is, she is a lovely elf and very busy this year (you, of all people, understand), so run right over there and sign up for an appointment to create a custom piece! But, I did see the most stunning artisan-made fine jewelry that spoke to me like no other. I am very excited to select my own stone, the setting and she may have it ready the same day. She may even do it while I wait. You see, all these pieces are made by hand—with eco-friendly and responsibly sourced materials. Your elves can rest at ease. She’ll have it ready and waiting for me to stop in and pick up. In fact, can you put Geralyn on the good list, too? She has that twinkle in her eye when you talk to her, much like yours, but sweeter. Maybe it’s her smile? She just really makes you feel at home in her shop. And maybe that is because she has been doing this since 2008? She has crafted some truly spectacular pieces. She is continually creating with new inspirations and has won numerous national jewelry designer awards for her work.. So, dear Santa, I must tell you that if you would like to take a bit of a rest this year, maybe you can just let me go to AicoraGems Jewelry Box and choose some beautiful hand-made jewelry. In fact, you could even let your elves know to spread the word that Geralyn is ready and waiting for us. You can sit tight, put your feet up, and enjoy a little nog with the Mrs. while I go to AicoraGems and excitedly pick out something special for myself and my best of friends this year. Oh and… make my “wish list” too!

– Sincerely, Me CONNECT

What Your Smile Says About You by Dr. Matthew Murray A smile is one of the first things someone notices about you. “A smile conveys confidence and professionalism, “says Lily Garcia a past president of the American College of Prosthodontists. Your smile can not only show someone how happy you are, but can also predict your past and future. A study at University of California Berkeley followed a group of women who were found to have genuinely happy smiles in college were more likely to have happier marriages and greater sense of wellbeing. A smile says a lot about one’s health as well. A study from Wayne State University, Michigan found that people with a big grin lived an average of 7 years longer than those who didn’t Chipped, discolored or missing teeth are revealed when you smile. Many of these problems can be fixed by seeing your local dental practitioner. Missing teeth in particular can be challenging to replace. A great option to replace missing teeth is a dental implant. A dental implant is the closest replacement to a natural tooth. The replacement of missing teeth with dental implants can be challenging and seeking out a professional who specializes in dental implants can give you the best result. So what does your smile say about you? That you’re happy, excited, or embarrassed? If a missing tooth is holding back your smile consider replacing it with a dental implant. Dr. Matthew Murray is a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon located in Chico. He specializes in surgeries mouth and face including dental implants. While visiting Table Mountain Ranch, a Heritage Hog attempted to eat part of my pants, and it was one of the most adorable things I’ve ever seen. That is, until guardian dog in training (gurdian puppy if you will), Luna entered a pig race around the pin.

Walking around the ranch, tranquility doesn’t begin to describe the feeling. Beautiful hills surround yellow fields with a collection of barn, house and pig pen structures separated by a flowing creek. The dim glow of a barn-cat’s eyes gaze from the rafters of the slaughter barn, the dogs excitedly race over the bridge alongside their owner who is just as, if not more excited to be on the farm. Brown’s unapologetically humorous attitude radiates well with friends and animals alike. Though kind and pleasant to be around, she isn’t afraid to openly show her mischievious sense of humor, in ways such as naming one of her pigs Doug LaMalfa.

By Jake Hutchison

It’s safe to say that Megan Brown is not your ordinary rancher. Her modern attitude toward the business, accompanied by internet-savvy tactics have earned her high popularity in her field and Butte County as a whole. Brown grew up on her parents’ ranch, so she is no stranger to the business. Her experience with pigs even started when she was in 4-H and FFA. Coming to the conclusion that she needed to find her own way in life, she began her search. A quest that led her everywhere, from law school to goats, she finally found eminent joy in pig farming. Why pigs? “They are fun to raise and be around and they taste amazing!” Brown said. A smashing success, she currently lives at her Table Mountain Ranch with her small army of Heritage Hogs and guard dogs. Raising and selling pigs is a full-time job on its own, but it’s far from where Brown stops in terms of keeping busy. Over the years, Brown has used social

media as a way to not only promote her brand, but to also spread ideas and recipes through blogging. A heavy social media presence is one way she is proving to be the next generation of rancher. Her increasingly popular blog and website, The Beef Jar, is a compilation of her writings, delicious recipes and more. The wit and knowledge she exemplifies in her blog caught the attention of agricultural magazine FeedStuffs who asked her to write a monthly column for them. Since becoming more and more viral on social media she has even become a public speaker. Next on the horizon for Brown is to expand to other breeds of pig while toying with the notion of new animals. For now, however, the goal is to keep the farm in production for at least six generations. A goal she will undoubtedly accomplish and then some.

Old Fashioned Heritage Pork Chops and Gravy Ingredients: 1 onion, sliced into rings 2 apples, cored and sliced into rings 2 Table Mountain Ranch Pork Chops Salt Pepper

1 tbsp butter 2 tbsp flour 2 cups water or broth ¼ tsp garlic powder ¼ tsp paprika

Instructions: Melt butter in large cast iron skillet with apples and onions. Cook over medium-low heat for about 15 minutes until caramelized. Remove to separate platter and keep warm. Turn the temperature up to high, place your salt and pepper seasoned pork chops in the same skillet. Heritage pork has far more flavor than conventional chops, so over seasoning is not necessary. Sear for 3 minutes on each side. Turn your temperature back to medium and continue cooking for about 7 minute on each side or until the internal temperature of your pork is 140 degrees. Once your pork chops are cooked through, add them to the apple and onion platter to stand while you make the gravy. Over medium heat, add your flour into the skillet with the pork drippings, mixing constantly with a whisk until thoroughly mixed and slightly brown. Slowly add water and garlic powder and cook until the gravy is thick. Serve over the chops.

many intimate tables, wonderfully spaced and I began to think of who I could call to come join me. I felt invited and it was nice.

The bartender set the sake down in front of me with a genuine smile. I wasn’t usually a fan of sake, but I had heard many good things about this restaurant, so I decided to take a chance and immerse myself. As I sipped slowly on my drink, I looked around at the restaurant. The walls were golden yellow and a deep red. It felt celebratory; a celebration of food and culture. I smiled to myself. I liked it here already.

A menu was placed in front of me and I scrolled through it out of habit, even though I wasn’t hungry. It didn’t take long for me want to order, even if that wasn’t why I came here. Everything sounded delicious. The subtle sweet smell of pickled ginger that delicately filled the restaurant made me hunger for sushi, despite all the amazing other items on the menu: Japanese curry rice bowls, donburi over rice bowls, noodle soups, appetizers, shooters...it was all enough for me to want to order everything, just to try it all.

The restaurant from the street was deceiving. The outside makes it seem small and quaint and when you first walk in you are met with a small bar and happy staff diligently preparing for the restaurant to open. But then as you walk in further, you are taken aback by the vastness of the place; wide, open, and it makes you breathe easy. For now it was quiet, but soon it would be bustling, the sounds of plates tapping, glasses clinking, laughter and soft conversations filling the room, making you feel at home. There were

Through the glass in front of me I could see fresh fish just begging to be rolled. I went to the Special Rolls section of the menu and had to stop myself from ordering more than I could handle. Maybe it was the sake, but I wanted to try all the rolls. The Hawaiian roll: yellowtail, mango, avocado, tuna and tobiko. I took another sip of sake to hide my salivation. The Chico roll: snow crab, avocado, tempura albacore, Unagi sauce, spicy mayo, sriracha, and green onion. Oh, Sriracha, how you tempt me so.

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM DECEMBER 2015

Despite the food being amazing, there was more to Izakaya Ichiban; a feeling that lingered. As I left the restaurant, I had a chance to take a second look around at the outdoor seating. The chairs and tables and entire area reminded me of a photo you might find on Pinterest; one that shows that outdoor living space you pinned to one of your boards, vowing it would be your next summer project. But here it was, the real thing. Bulbs draped delicately over the patio area and I imagined the patio lit at night, the soft warm light of the bulbs creating a comforting glow, inviting more conversation, laughs; a lighting that makes everyone look good. I smiled as I left, imagining a nice night out with friends here and as I got into my car and unfolded the takeout menu I grabbed from the front entrance. I started scrolling through my phone, looking for friends to bring here. They would thank me and maybe order all of the things I hadn’t had a chance to. I might get to try everything on the menu after all!

“Sake, please,” I said to the bartender who greeted me as I walked in. He was younger than me and wearing a grey shirt with the restaurant’s logo on it: a pleasantly drawn image of a fish and the restaurant’s name, Izakaya Ichiban.

Throughout the 36 separate stories we’ve written, one thing has remained consistent during each and every interview: customers love the work they do — and they seem to make great friends too! We could go on recounting our own experiences, but we felt that our 100th issue would be a great time to celebrate the work they’ve done through the testimonials given by their own clients.

“We both agree, [the kitchen remodel] has had a significant impact on the look and feel of our house and we would encourage anyone thinking about making the investment to take the plunge.” - David & Shannon Griffith

“We are new homeowners and this was our first project. We were constantly calling him [Ric] with questions about demo, measurements, electrical, and timing. Ric and the workers were always friendly.” - Nate & Katie Danner

“Ric’s crew was delightful. They were clean and quick. He is supposed to touch people’s lives with his design and personality. That’s just what he does.” - John & Greta Souza

DIY: Birchin’ Holiday Candle Holders

Who doesn’t love the warm glow of candlelight? Bring some rustic charm to your home this holiday season with this super simple project! Birch wood is a timeless and versatile material that can be used in countless ways to adorn any space. We happened upon a bundle of birch logs at Eighth and Main Antiques in Chico, and the possibilities were endless! Here’s how you can create this look in your own home.

Materials needed: Three birch logs, at least 3” in diameter. Tea lights Saw Drill with 1 ½ wood boring bit Twine or jute

1. Cut your logs using a saw of your choice. Cut the logs to various lengths so that their heights will stagger.

48

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM DECEMBER 2015

2. Using your drill and wood boring bit, drill down ¾” to accommodate the tea light. The tea light should protrude slightly above the surface of the wood to reduce the risk of fire.

3. If you like, tie your logs together with twine or ribbon of your choice.

4. Light your candles and enjoy your cozy, rustic decor

WHAT IF? BY DAN BOSCH

Depending on what one has taking place in their life, a good quote can definitely help put the situation into perspective. One of my favorite quotes has to do with the worry that tends to frustrate or even paralyze us all at one time or another in our lives… Mark Twain addressed it perfectly when he said “I have had a lot of worries in my life… most of which never happened” I have found that many times people tend to use their worries and fears of unknown future events to justify their avoidance of action in the present. This is no different when it comes to the decision (or lack thereof) to purchase real estate - specifically investment real estate. When the market is depressed and values are falling, we hear statements like “I’m not going to invest in a depreciating asset.” Yet when we enter a market in which the opposite is true and values are headed in a positive direction, the justification not to buy becomes “Prices are too high – I’ve heard we are near the peak and I don’t want to buy now.” With the strengthening of the real estate market over the last 18-24 months, the latter of these two mindsets is now beginning to become more prevalent. Many opinions are now being offered that we are on the verge of another bubble and questions are being asked about what might happen if things change for the worse. Again, showcasing the ability for individuals to use what they fear might happen as a means to not push themselves forward. 52

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM DECEMBER 2015

This is where the beauty of a longterm mindset comes in. Investing in real estate by using tried-and-true formulas, understanding your limitations, seeking the right guidance and having a plan that takes into account the next ten, twenty or even thirty years will ensure that the peaks and valleys of a short-term plan are all but eliminated. Proof of this can be found in the fact that while huge numbers of single family homes were foreclosing during the recent downturn, far fewer multi-family properties were suffering the same fate. While there were cases where apartment building or other investment property owners did get foreclosed on, the vast majority simply stayed the course, continued collecting their monthly rents and simply focused on the big picture. These individuals understood the value of the long-term approach and are now reaping the rewards as we continue to see both property values and rents increasing in our current market… Which brings to mind another quote. Though I don’t know the origin, the saying “Patience grasshopper” has always been another of my favorites… Dan Bosch is a Realtor Associate with RE/MAX of Chico and the team leader for the Premier Professionals Real Estate Team. Let’s Go Downtown! Friendly chatter rings from the sunny café patio on the corner. The mouthwatering scent of freshly baked pastries drifts down the street. Shop owners proudly sweep the leaves from their sidewalks. Somehow this pleasant scene is both ever-changing and comfortably familiar all at once. This is downtown. This is the heart of our community and our home. It’s no surprise that we treasure our downtown areas of Butte County. The history, the business owners, the culture,

the community. All of these things combine to create something uniquely spectacular. This holiday season, we encourage you to take the time to fully experience and appreciate Downtown Chico, Paradise, and Oroville. Each is charming and special in its own way, with a unique set of offerings waiting to be discovered and enjoyed. From dining to shopping to recreation, there is no shortage activities to fill your day. these beautiful downtown areas. Over the past 100 issues, we’ve had plenty of content relating to Downtown Chico. Even so, we can’t seem to say enough about the wonderful businesses and people contained in this area. We could go on and on, but we’ll let the next few pages speak for themselves. ‘Tis the season not only to shop local, but to say thank you to those who make our community a place we’re proud to call home.

Fine jewelry is the one accessory whose shine will never fade. Since 1989 Lisa Nolta and her mother Madeleine have been co-owners of Gabrielle Ferrar. Lisa, who studied technology of the jewelry business at Revere Academy, has been making jewelry for decades. Her pieces are recognized by the American Gem Trade Association, the leading industry force in the ethical endorsement of naturally colored gemstones and cultured pearls. Lisa’s attention to detail and enthusiasm for creating the perfect piece shows in each sparkling design. Not only does she help a customer pick out their jewelry, she also explores in depth what the ideal piece is: asking questions about the person who it’s intended for, holding your hand to examine which tone would look best on your skin and finding out how often you will wear the piece or on which occasions. With the holidays upon us, joy is in the air along with that thing called love. Diamonds and fine jewelry are a gift that keeps on giving throughout time, often being passed down through multiple generations. Jewelry is a passionate expression and at Gabrielle Ferrar every piece that goes out their door is a result of that same affection. 58

Take me to Paradise Last year, I slipped on the ice. In fact, I slipped on the ice a couple of times. Fortunately, the ice skating rink that I held the sides of was welcoming enough that I not only had the time of my life learning how to skate, I wasn’t embarrassed in the least. Anyone who says an ice rink made from basketball courts can’t be done can tell that to the 20,000 plus attendees at the Paradise Ice Rink in it’s infant year of 2013. The Paradise Ice Skating Rink was the dream of District Manager Mike Trinca, a dream that took about 10 years to bring to fruition. The three-year-old rink, which opens Nov. 15, is not only large enough to support veteran skaters but also has amenities for newbies. If you’re like me, you’ll probably be using walkers for your first few trips (no shame). A full staff on site also ensures safety as well as providing ice games for kids when all of the grown ups need a break from the skates.

By Jake Hutchison

Yes, the Paradise Ice Skating Rink is pretty impressive. But it’s not the only thing Paradise has to offer. Personally, I’m a hiker and there are some incredible hiking trails such as the road to Head Dam down in the canyon and of course the swimmer’s favorite: The Steps. For those looking for a lighter outdoors adventure, Paradise Lake is a tranquil getaway that spans a total of nine miles to the end of the trail and back. The lake is also perfect to explore by kayak. The town also holds many annual events like the Gold Nugget Parade and the Chocolate Festival. One of the big December events is the Lighted Truck Parade, which is similar to Chico’s Parade of Lights, only combined with a Christmas Tree lighting. Another feature that continues to bring in visitors is the growing downtown area. Paradise’s tight-knit community of local business owners has created an inviting atmosphere by offering quality service along with their quality goods. Hobby stores such as Knit-Wits and the

Red Wagon provide a quirky charm as well as concise expertise. Taverns like Canteena and the Wine Room are perfect for a night out with friends. If you’re in the mood for a show, the Paradise Performing Arts Center will be featuring the Northern California Ballet performing “The Nutcracker.” Theatre on the Ridge is another popular venue for plays and musicals. However, if you just want to end the day with a nice movie, there’s always the Paradise Cinema 7. Bring your bikes on a day trip and park at one of the public parking locations. There is an extensive bike trail that runs through the entirety of paradise with plenty of trails and roads to branch off of and see the sites. Paradise is often overlooked as a day trip destination, especially when there is so much to do in the Chico and Oroville areas. But for a true sense of the pines, there is no better place to go in Butte County.

Paradise Recreation & Park District Beautiful hikes, fun-filled fishing days and inclusive sports teams. Much of Paradise’s commodities are the result of hard work by the Terry Ashe Recreation District Since its creation, Paradise’s Recreation District has served the community by filling the town with useful commodities and bringing the community together with various events. The Rec hosts multiple classes, from ballroom dancing to Chinese painting, and caters to all age groups. Groups start at preschool age and progress to youth, teen and adult. The Skyway location is not only the home base for the Rec, but also to a children’s playground and a multi-use hall, and has basketball courts that turn into the newly famous ice skating rink in the winter Each park uniquely suits the needs of 62

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM DECEMBER 2015

the locals as well as visitors. The Aquatic Park in south Paradise is good for fishing and contains a good-sized public pool for the warm summers. The Moore Road Park is a favorite of pet lovers, with its dog walking paths and horse riding arena. It is also the location of two fullsized softball fields. The Paradise Park on Pearson runs along the bike trail and is the site of the Train Museum. And of course the massive Bille Park, complete with two playgrounds, walking paths, an RC truck course and plenty of hiking trails. Currently, the Rec is working on Lakeridge Park in Magalia. The project will be a representation of the beauty found in the pines along the Magalia Reservoir. While overseeing the creation, maintenance and planning of local parks in the Paradise/Magalia area is an important part of what the Rec does, it is merely a fraction.

by Jake Hutchison

If you can’t get enough ice skating and softball, The Rec offers a membership pass with plenty of benefits. including discounts on passes to the tune of only $10 per year. One of the coolest things about the The Rec is its direct connection to the public. They take in all suggestions and ideas from the community about new programs and parks. You even have the option of being the namesake of a park by being a key contributor. Recreation Superintendent Dean Moore is at the helm at the Recreation Center. Formerly the superintendent of Yuba City, Moore moved north to take on the role in Paradise in 2001. Since then he has overseen much of the development within the town. So if you’re a Paradise resident or planning to become one, check out the list of activities they have to make your stay even better.

MAKE IT

SNOW Interview by Jake Hutchison

Every December, christmas choirs and carolers fill the concert halls and streets in towns all over the country. In Chico, The Yule Logs come out to gig, packing the venues. Forming in 2005, The Yule Logs emerged from bands such as Bear Hunter and The Electric Pie Band. This holiday-themed band (or Noel-Core, if you will) is known for its wild props, festive outfits and the catchiest music imaginable. Well versed not only in musical styles but in show accessibility. Seeing a familyfriendly show at The Chico Women’s Club differs drastically from the not-so-family-friendly show at Duffy’s. The band’s ability to split the shows between raunchy and silly has earned them gigs at many Chico hot-spots. Vocalist Marty Parker and Drummer Jake Sprecher of “hardest working band in snow business” spoke with Upgraded Living about the joys of coming into their own and the plights of TV-VCR combos. 74

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM DECEMBER 2015

So when I saw you guys at Duffy’s last year, you held up some pretty hilarious signs during one of your songs, is that something you’ve always done? MARTY: That’s actually an in-band meme. During the song “I walked with a reindeer” and the whole point of the song is that the lyrics don’t change. The song only says “I walked with a reindeer last night.” JAKE: That’s because it’s a cover of Rocky Erickson’s “I walked with a zombie.” MARTY: And it’s repeated like 35 times. And so the gag, when it first started was at the third verse I started holding up signs with the lyrics, as though it’s not totally obvious what the lyrics are, for like a singalong. But because that gag only has so much juice to it, I started writing really irreverent things and then I started writing really obscene things and drawing obscene pictures. JAKE: For our “R-Rated” shows. MARTY: And now it’s like we just keep trying to outdo ourselves. I’m mostly trying to shock them. Have you guys ever slipped up at a family friendly show or ever worry about it? JAKE: You know, I don’t think we have. I know we’ve laughed about the potential of doing it a thousand times. MARTY: It’s like when you’re driving along a canyon road and all I’d have to do is go like that and my life would be over with. It’s funny it would take one slip up but it hasn’t happened yet.

With all of the props you guys use for different shows, how long does set-up typically take?

Do you guys have anything new planned for the month of December?

JAKE: It doesn’t take that much longer once you get used to the routine. Everyone helps out in some way. Kirt is the one who sets up the PA and Marty is usually in charge of things like the snow machine.

JAKE: We have a new album and we are really excited about it. This is going to be our best one, no question. Basically a lot of originals we’ve been playing the last two seasons but haven’t recorded. There’s some covers that the fans are familiar with but we our own twists on.

MARTY: More than anything we have to give consideration to what is transportable. There are so many things I’d like to do. We are the only band that gigs with a funnel because you need a funnel for the snow machine. We have all these cardboard signs for more than just one song. We have those plastic santas, those are called “blow molds.” If you want to look for a cool vintage lawn santa you’d search for blow mold.

MARTY: For example there’s a song called “A Jingle Ate my Baby.” The skeleton of the song is “Jingle Bells” but it doesn’t sound anything like jingle bells. JAKE: There’s some Slayer references. It’s quite fun.

JAKE: We have lots of goofy stuff but it works itself out.

MARTY: The album’s called “Up All Night” which is the titular track which we are releasing the video for this month.

What’s one of the craziest props you guys have ever brought on stage?

JAKE: Another interesting thing is we are going to Reno for a three night stint. We’ve played shows in casinos before and they didn’t go so well. But they weren’t in Reno!

JAKE: We used to have the TV-VCR combos that we would run VHS tapes out of and we’d set those up and play Christmas specials. We had three consecutive TV-VCR combos die on us, two in one year.

MARTY: It appeals to us. For some reason we want to spend three nights in Reno. I hope to end up on a marquee with Three Dog Night, Tony Orlando or maybe Olivia Newton John.

MARTY: These were big honkin things and it was just hilariously unstable. That was another thing, I was like “we are a band that tours with a VCR”. JAKE: And I’d still bring that VCR if we could find one that worked. MARTY: Yeah but after the third one we were just like “we can’t go through that again.” So looking at your tour dates, you guys have a lot of shows coming up. How do you balance all of the gigs in December? JAKE: This year we actually have fewer shows because spencer has to balance work, he lives in Portland. We have a show in LA this year, we’ve never been to LA so that’s new. We’re going to Lodi again, which of course is a regular touring hot-spot. They’re nice to us in Lodi. MARTY: We love our Lodi Show. JAKE: We’d actually like to give a big up to Russ Munson. Some years I think we actually played too many shows. There was a year where we played I think 25 shows. We almost blocked ourselves. It wasn’t good on our voices, our physical and mental health.

JAKE: Usually we play a lot in town so it’s a little different from normal touring. We’re not killing time during the day we are working like 9 to 5 and then we might play a show or even two shows that night. We’re finding a happy medium where even just scaling it back five or six shows makes a huge difference.

CONNECT

MARTY: It’s a recipe for getting sick.

glass blowing and woodworking. This won’t be the last time she’s on the screen either. Mac Shane’s current development with BCAC 11 TV is a segment where she will be teaching how to paint portraits in similar fashion to Bob Ross.

The studio was founded by Christine Mac Shane, an acrylic painter and muralist. Her remarkable timeliness and ability led her to teaching. Tables, chairs and small easels flow throughout the rooms for students to sit and create their own masterpieces with the help of Mac Shane and her team of artists. Along one of the walls are small paintings that Mac Shane has nailed down to two hour lessons. The options are both her original work as well as some well known classics such as Van Gogh’s “Starry Night.”

She became very popular when working on a mural of an Orchard in Oroville. As she zipped around on a lift, residents such as what Mac Shane described as a “real cowboy on a horse” would walk up and watch her paint Lake Oroville. The crowd would make various suggestions such as adding almonds or olives on the trees. This happened once again when she worked on a lake scene at Joe’s Bar in Chico, where residents then asked for squirrels and deer. Though entertained by such requests, Mac Shane finally gave her own suggestion.

For couples, Studio 561 offers a special Valentine’s Day lesson. You sit opposite of your partner and on your canvases, you each paint half of a heart to come together after.

“I told them, ‘that’ll be $20 for the squirrel, $80 for the deer and $200 if you want me to paint you on a boat.’ They would leave after that,” She said.

Born in Perth, Australia, Mac Shane traveled to the United States and stopped in California to work, eventually moving north to make find home in Oroville in 1989. After working as a muralist and spreading her art there, she made Chico her home in 2007. Since then she has stirred up quite a bit excitement for her studio. Chico’s art scene is generally very supportive of upcoming artists and Studio 561 is a way to give back to that community by creating them.

Her witty sense of humor has attracted many like-minded artists of both amateur and professional skill to connect with her at the studio for her painting lessons. It creates a warm environment that calms any nerves one may feel taking the classes if they are not at the same skill level as their peers.

Dancing was taking place in unexpected places. Live music was being played in the basements of local businesses. A small town suddenly transformed into a holiday metropolis. I remember going to Christmas Preview for the very first time in 2010. It was my first holiday season in Chico and everything that was happening downtown just baffled me. Above all, the one thing that really stood out was the community celebrating as a collective, assembling in the heart of Chico. As the years have gone by, I began to notice that Chico welcomes the season in such collaborative magnitude. Here are a few events happening in our small corner of the North State that are going to make this December brighter than ever. Orland Avenue of Lights The Orland Avenue of Lights is going to illuminate the Glenn County Fairgrounds this December from the 16-20. The event is a great way to experience a Glenn County Christmas and tremendous light displays. Businesses, clubs, and community volunteers come together to make the Glenn Fairgrounds transform into a winter wonderland complete with reindeer, swans, and of course, thousands of flickering lights. For more information on the Avenue of Lights and ticket sales call (530) 354-4052.

Downtown Oroville Parade of Lights The Parade of Lights will once again be passing through Historic Downtown Oroville on December 12 from 6-8 p.m. Last year, over 8,000 people attended the event and this year is looking to be even bigger. “Inside Santa’s Workshop” is the theme this year and will feature light displays from local businesses, community groups, and Butte County residents. Over 100 vehicles ranging from antique cars, semi trucks — even horses — will be participating in this holiday happening. After the parade, be sure to stick around — the annual Christmas tree lighting will be taking place in front of the Municipal Auditorium. Visit orovillechamber.net or call Historic Downtown Oroville at (530) 538-2542. Northern California Ballet’s The Nutcracker The Northern California Ballet Company has continued to bring professional dance and performances to communities all over the North State, and this holiday season, the ensemble will be performing at the Paradise Performing Arts Center. The marquee will feature The Nutcracker, the famous Tchaikovsky scored, two-act ballet on Dec. 18-20. Call (530) 872-1719 or visit Jaki’s Hilltop Café in Paradise and PIP printing in Chico for ticket sales and additional information.
