UPGRADED LIVING LIFE IN CHICO

The Polar Bear Plunge By Desireé DeLattre

All teeth were chattering in harmonious rhythm while knees shook from both the cool winter air and pure excitement for the new year. All shades of skin were patterned with goose bumps, and cheers could be heard from a mile away. A final countdown was given, and the brave souls in attendance took a leap into a new year, through an old tradition. The annual New Year Polar Bear Plunge at One Mile was definitely a cool way to start the year. In between shivers and laughs, most swimmers couldn’t think up a reason why not to take the plunge. “I’ve done it every year since I was a kid, and I always bring a ‘firsttimer’ to jump in with me. This time, it was my nephew who got to experience this Chico tradition” said one Chicoan, post-plunge. Although it has been a local event for years, families from near and far came to break the ice and get a fresh start to 2012. Spectators and supporters watched as bodies poured into One Mile, shaking their heads and burying themselves in their sweaters. “There is absolutely no way you could ever get me into that pool,” said the mother of two swimmers as she wrapped towels around their snow-colored bodies. The only questions that remain are these: how will you start the new year? Will you take the jump, dip a toe into the water, or will you shake your head and watch? Chico Bridal Showcase By Desireé DeLattre

They’re the two most important words you’ll ever exchange with another person. Eyes matched, hands joined, hearts racing... “I do” changes everything. Suddenly, growing old never sounded more attractive. The snooze button finds itself being pressed every morning by another sleepy-head. Life has bloomed into something of such beautiful detail, yet its founding principle of love remains so simple. Highly anticipated and cheerfully celebrated, weddings take the cake in being one of life’s most treasured events. But before the champagne is poured, months of stressful planning and destructive nail biting take place. There’s the dress, the venue, the catering, and every meticulous detail in between to stop you right in your merry tracks. However, we ask that you hold off on the hair-

pulling, because local businesses are here to upgrade your wedding. Ninety-three vendors from Chico and surrounding areas ventured to the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds to showcase their best wedding products and ideas to get you from point: engaged to point: betrothed. Two giant rooms and a walkway were decorated with booths that catered to every wedding necessity. No step was overlooked, no bride-to-be was left disappointed. Funds collected from ticket purchases for the showcase were matched by Rabobank of Chico to support the Autism LifeSpan Program, giving an even greater reason to explore the possibilities of a local, picture-perfect wedding. Here’s a little taste of some of the goodness we found while browsing around the Chico Bridal Showcase brought to you by WeddingsNorthValley.com.

ebruary’s theme is all about loving yourself and those around you. What better way to love yourself and start planning for the future of those in your life than by building financial equity and stability in a home? For those who haven’t been following the real estate market recently, things have been picking up immensely. Housing supply is down and demand is starting to grow, which signals the start of a residential comeback. A number of homes are on the market for no more than a week before they’re swooped up or experience a bidding war, but even so, great deals still exist in our local market! Many don’t realize the start of a real estate comeback until it is too late and end up investing in homes at the peak of the market, as so many did during this most recent housing bubble before it burst. Unfortunately, the market can only bear so much upswing and must eventually decline. The trick to investing in real estate is no different than in any other industry: buy low and sell high; now is the perfect time to do just that. Renting may seem like a simple solution; there’s less commitment involved, expenditures are relatively flat and for the most part may lack surprises, but as the recent economic forecasting for real estate has shown, all it takes is five years before the costs of renting a home outweigh the true cost of ownership. Once you reach this point, you are left paying for something that provides no short or long-term equity and provides no stability whatsoever. There are few investment opportunities that show such a quick pay off in any investing venue. Do yourself a favor and schedule an appointment with a REALTOR® today to see if purchasing a home would be right for you. The information is free and it may just be the most important investment you’ll ever make. Effie Khaki has been a licensed REALTOR® in Chico for the past twenty-two years. VALENTINE’S

by Briana Lindstrom Ohhhh, February. The season of love. Hearts and butterflies and sentence fragments written on candies. How we love to bask in the rosy light of amore…Hey! Hold the love bug, Herbie! Some of us cannot write our autobiographies with quotes from Hallmark cards. Sure, dating can be fun, but when looking for love it can be hard to stay afloat. "Don't worry, there are plenty of fish in the sea!" So we hear… But in a little pond like Chico, you might feel like a salmon swimming upstream trying to deal with the ebb and flow of dating in a small town. Here are a few tips to help navigate through these rough waters. Already found your lobster? Read on and you might find a thing or two that can breathe some new life into the sails of your love-boat. Make new friends! (But keep the old) Staying in the same friend circle will exhaust your dating options. Branch out and socialize with someone new. Even if it's not someone you fancy, you might meet a person through a person through a person… it's called networking, and it's not just for business!! Do the things you love to do. Simple, right? So get off your couch, and get out there! You might meet someone else who loves to do that same thing. Ta-Dah! An interest you have in common. Maybe next time you can do it as a pair. Take pride in your appearance. All the time, not just when you go out drinking. You want more than just drunk people to find you attractive, right? So take a little extra time on yourself when you get ready for your day. It doesn't mean you have to become a diva (or divo), but if you feel like you look the part, you'll have the confidence to play it better. Revive Chivalry!! Chivalry is defined as "courtesy, generosity and valor." Even the most progressive women can appreciate those qualities. Guys: Open doors, pull out chairs, give compliments, pick up the tab. Girls: Don't take it for granted. Notice the small things, and say "Thank you"!

If you don’t have something nice to say... In a small town, this playground rule can go a long way. People love talking about people. But you’ll look a lot more attractive if you’re saying nice things. And in a tight-knit community, you’re bound to run into people, or be overheard by people who know people. So don’t burn your bridges or you’ll be up Butte Creek without a paddle. Fun dates are just as important as romantic dates. Be creative and find an activity you can do together. Bike rides, bowling, hikes, art walks, dance classes, picnics, people watching, sunsets, Kirshner Wildlife Center, concerts, plays, Pageant cheap skate night.. think outside the to-go box! Isn’t camping more fun with a fire? Even during those silent moments, there’s something to turn your attention to. The same goes for dating! Don’t let your flame fizzle out because of awkward silences at awkwardly silent restaurants. Find a place to go with a focal point like live music, trivia or open mic! A more festive atmosphere will warm things up and soon you’re sure to see sparks fly!

VALENTINE’S

Take the stress out of valentine’s day By Aveed Khaki

Valentine’s Day may seem like a one day per year event, but there’s no reason why that should be the case, and the good folks over at Agua Azul Oasis Spa agree! This Valentine’s Day think about treating that special someone to that special something that you know they could really use and when it comes to giving, Agua Azul has just the products and packages that will allow you to shop for even those loved ones that seem to have it all. Best of all, you can buy in advance if you see a package you know they would like and hold onto the present until it comes time to surprise them with it. 1. Valentine’s Spa Sampler

Try a bit of Agua Azul’s most popular services with this sampler package. Tighten your pores with an express facial, bask in the relaxation of a thirty minute massage, release toxins in the steam sauna and finalize the experience with an express pedicure that will show your most overworked of body parts just how much you care for them. This Valentine’s Spa Sampler special is a $178 value and only $139 if you purchase before February 14th.

2. Steam Sauna & Half Hour Couple’s Massage

A true loved one will not only love a surprise from Agua Azul, but will love it even more if they get to share it with their special someone. Plus, it’s a bonus pat on the back (pun intended) for the gift giver as well! Start your experience with a visit to the steam sauna to open your pores and release stubborn toxins; follow it up with a half hour couple’s massage and leave feeling invigorated and totally relaxed. This $128 value is specially priced at just $99 if you purchase before February 14th!

Grab a membership to the Club Oasis Rewards (COR) Membership Program and help that special someone rack up rewards year round! COR allows members to earn points for services and products they purchase at Agua Azul and redeem those points for gift certificates, mani/pedis, and so much more!

3. Steam Sauna & Hour Couple’s Massage with Couple’s Pedicure

When it comes to toenails, we think it goes without saying that everyone could use a little upgrading. Grab that special someone and head down for a visit to the steam sauna followed by a full hour massage and couple’s pedicure. Beach season is right around the bend and there’s nothing better than getting both of your feet in flip-flop wearing condition. This $279 value is specially priced at $245 if purchased before Valentine’s day!

(above) Agua Azul carries great gifts year round like this plush robe. (below) Give the gift of relaxation with an Agua Azul massage.

4. Couple’s Valentine’s Retreat

If choosing from the options above is simply too difficult (and how could it not be?) then the Couple’s Valentine’s Retreat may be just what cupid ordered! Lavish that special someone with an entire daycation experience that you can also share in! Start your day with an invigorating facial, then prepare to relax through an hour long massage and follow-up pedicure! Take a moment to reflect on the day with an energy boosting lunch with your spa-mate. Complete the experience with a couple’s steam sauna trip for good measure and you have an experience that will keep that special someone all wrapped up in you for months to come. The hailstorms of October may seem like nothing but a distant memory at this point, but for many the smattering of dimples over the surface of their once flawless cars are constant reminders of the day the sky seemed to fall all over Chico. Thankfully for those affected by the downpour, help may be just a call away! Comprehensive insurance coverage through your auto insurance agent covers incidents like this and does so without adding negative marks to your insurance or raising your rates. Best of all, your coverage allows you to select the shop of your choice and return your car’s exterior to good-asnew condition for nothing more than your comprehensive coverage deductible which

for many is a very minimal out-of-pocket expense. If your car was damaged during the hailstorms you may make a claim at your leisure. The sooner you make the claim though, the better, as the event is still fresh in memory. It is important to note that if you switch insurance providers during this time, you forfeit your right to make a claim at all. Simply call your insurance agent and notify them of the damage; you will then have the option to choose the repair shop of your choice per California law. Shop around and make sure you’re comfortable with the staff and service at the shop you choose. Many people shy away from taking the time to go through this process as it seems

like an extra hassle in their day-to-day lives that simply isn’t worth it. However, it is important to remember that should you ever decide to sell your car or trade it in for another, even mild damage will make all the difference in the valuation of your car. When it comes down to it, repairing the dents should be quick and painless and you’ll have your car back in no time. Events like these are why you pay for insurance in the first place; don’t be afraid to use it! Concours Elite: 2267 Esplanade Chico, CA 95926 (530) 891-0234 concourselite.com

M&S Wesley Tree Service STORY and Photography by Aveed Khaki

eroes are sometimes found in the most surprising of places, and when it comes to locals Marc and Shuree Wesley of M&S Wesley Tree Service, the story of their success is a much deserved happy ending to the heroic service they provide this community. Founded in 2008, M&S Wesley Tree Service has been at the emergency beckon call of some of the north valley’s most notable disasters. True, living in the City of Trees has its benefits: shade in the summer, picturesque autumns and fresh air yearround. However, this living arrangement also has its downfalls when those same trees that provide so much generosity year-in and year-out decide to self-prune, fall prey to seasonal storms or simply begin to wane due to age. It is an unstated ambivalence that we all share with this beautiful city of ours, but by virtue of the tree removal, proper pruning and education services provided by Marc and Shuree, we are able to live without fear of the inevitable, assuming of course that we are wise enough to pay attention to the signs before it’s too late. Solar Farm by Aveed Khaki | Photos by Erin Wenham

(above) One of the solar arrays at the Thompson Ranch. (left) John Thompson and the mechanical behemoths of his farm.

fter sharing the many benefits of solar energy, including the incredible long-term savings at his home back in November, John Thompson is at it again, this time having solar arrays installed by Alternative Energy Systems (AES) at his rice farming operation over at The Thompson Ranch just outside of Chico. If you’ve spent any time reading the magazine over the last year, it should come as no surprise that we’re all for his decision. Farming tends to be a business of uncertainties. With ever-changing weather patterns and all manner of other assorted variables, costs are constantly fluctuating, making the prediction of profits nearly impossible. A common mantra in the world of farming states “When you can’t control what you make, you have to control what you spend”; this recent installation does just that and does so in an incredibly short period of time. The new solar system project gathers some one hundred ten thousand watts of pure solar energy and provides power to four separate locations on the farm: a rice dryer, workshop and two irrigation pump sites. The five hundred twenty-four panel array guarantees more than $25,000 in annual energy savings, which in a world of

uncertain costs is an undoubtedly welcome certainty. Perhaps the most exciting part of this AES installation though, is not just that it guarantees the ranch against utility rate price increases, but also that the incentives and rebates offset more than 70% of the installation costs bringing the total time necessary to completely pay off the system to less than five years. With a projected $1.3 million dollar cash flow over the minimum life of the system, this solar project provides certainty that John can not only count on, but pass down to those who will someday inherit his ranch. With performance monitoring software that tracks and measures both system production as well as performance, a ten year warranty from AES for the installation and a twenty-five year warranty on each solar panel, this solar project will keep John’s rice farming operation running in peak condition with minimal maintenance for a long time to come. The money saved can be invested right back into the farm to increase production, revenue and subsequently profits. In a world of uncertainty, it’s nice to have savings you can count on monthafter-month, year-after-year and with this new solar installation in place, those savings are a guarantee John can take directly to the bank.

hen homeowners Lauren and Mike O’Donnell decided to remodel their kitchen, they made their first call to Granite Transformations as they already knew exactly what they wanted, having already lived through the experience with a different home. Lauren, a design associate at Nantucket Home, taped up big sheets of paper and drew lines to represent her ideal kitchen, including every single cabinet and drawer, complete with a list of contents. From the very beginning, the O’Donnells wanted Granite Transformations to make their kitchen project dreams come true. Co-owner Zaher Murad (aka “Z”) had worked with them

previously, so they were excited to ask him to work his magic once again. In a collaborative effort, Mike, his father and Z went to work on creating the kitchen of the couple’s dreams. The O’Donnells’ kitchen started out as a shabby French café, with blue Formica countertops, three different paint colors, and lots of wallpaper. It was transformed into the upgraded and elegant heart of the O’Donnell home where they can do everything from working on crafts and folding laundry to preparing meals for friends and family. None of this would have been so enjoyable without the glass countertops that Granite Transformations installed along two walls, on a small peninsula, and on the oversized central island. Made from up to 72% post-consumer recycled glass, the countertops are making life very easy for Lauren and Mike by being seamless, non-porous, and resistant to stain, scratch, heat and bacteria. Adding in a lifetime warranty and keeping demolition debris from making its way into our local landfill makes these countertops even more valuable. After just one day of countertop installation (and no tear-outs), Z had the O’Donnell kitchen completed, even providing their cabinets’ hardware and Brizo faucets. Renovations and upgrades require lots of collaboration and the Upgraded Living staff commends the O’Donnells and Granite Transformations for working together to create a beautiful home environment. In the end, the kitchen was a complete success; it’s golden retriever tested, and O’Donnell approved.

On the corner where Chico meets... Italy by Emily Spesert

ultum in parvo” is latin for “Much in little.” That is one of the several inscriptions included on the wall of Chico’s new eatery, Grana. That is also what owner Jeff King appreciates about traditional Italian cuisine: fresh bread might be seasoned with only a few sprigs of rosemary; a choice cut of pork might be simply wrapped in bacon. Since moving to Chico ten years ago, the success of Chico restaurants in featuring fresh, local, organic food has inspired Jeff King. “We have a responsibility about food choices,” King said, to make them healthy and local. He also values recipes that are made from scratch with seasonal ingredients. So, after living in the tight-knit community that is Chico, King felt compelled to put aside his career in the construction business and experience restaurant ownership for himself. Grana is located in the old Grand Auto building, next to North Rim Adventure Sports and has all the attributes it needs to showcase the intersection of Chico life with Italian culture: a patio café, real food, wine, and a central location across the street from the Farmer’s Market – with plenty of bicycle traffic finding its way up and down the street. Since the beginning of January, this open-plan industrial-style space has been providing customers with delicious Italian versions of pizza, salad, and appetizers. The walls of windows are reminiscent of the building’s repair-shop history and are perfect for people-watching (if you’re indoors) or investigating the origins of that detectably mouthwatering aroma (if you are unfortunate enough to be standing outside). A Valoriani brick oven works prominently behind the counter, better than any full-time employee, and is Grana’s biggest attraction. Imported from Italy and fueled exclusively by local almond wood, it cooks nearly every item on the menu and imbibes them all with a slightly smoky flavor, perfectly complementing the authentic-style meats (such as duck bacon, guanciale, and boquerones) and wine pairings. Future plans include opening the patio to the public and possibly providing catering services. But, in the meantime, Grana is already much more than just another pizza and salad shop – it’s a big taste of Italy. 44

(top and left) Reminiscent of restaurant styles in the bay area, this industrial space screams chic and the food echoes that sentiment. (bottom) Grana’s chef extraordinaire prepares some of the evening’s most sought after offerings.

Sin of Cortez by Aveed Khaki | Photography by Erin Wenham

There’s good food and then there’s great food; Sin of Cortez finds itself categorized under the latter. pened by Danielle Ius in July of 2002, Sin of Cortez on the Esplanade has quickly become a favorite among Chico residents and visitors alike. Probably best known for their deviously delicious breakfast menu, this local destination has found its way to the top of the list for foodies whose taste buds know a thing or two about the subject. Promoting a custom menu handcrafted by renowned chef Isabel Cruz (known for her restaurants that cover the entire west coast, including Portland’s Isabel Pearl, Ashland’s Dragonfly, Stargazer Farm in Sandy, Oregon, La Jolla’s Coffee Cup and San Diego’s Isabel’s Cantina, Bario Star and Seaside Cantina), Sin of Cortez brings the not-oft-found taste of beautifully-plated gourmet cuisine to our cozy little town. Perhaps most striking though, is Sin’s penchant for local everything. Produce

from S&S, Comanche Creek Farms and Danielson Co. align to build masterpieces from local farmers’ harvests while the University Farm provides sausage and other hearty products that further fortify the menu’s selections. All bread offerings are baked fresh in-house daily, while all salsas, sauces, granola and cereal are painstakingly created day-after-day by Sin’s incredible kitchen staff to maintain the highest standards in freshness and quality. When it comes down to it, the food speaks for itself, but at Upgraded Living we take notice of the more intimate details. For a restaurant to be truly great, the staff must be as memorable as the food, and in this area as well as all others, Sin of Cortez delivers. Day-after-day, month-after-month, year-after-year, this fine establishment has provided us with familiar faces that stand the test of time. It has often been said that the turn-over rate at a restaurant is inversely proportional to how popular they are with the

general public, the greater the turn-over rate in staffing, the lower the popularity. If our observations are correct, the turnover rate at Sin of Cortez seems to float slightly above zero, and their popularity proves the adage correct. Undoubtedly comprising one of the hardest working staffs in Chico, the servers here seem to make this their work-home throughout their entire college career. They provide unbeatable customer service year-afteryear and, through that, build long-term clientele and friendships that exist on a first name basis. Whether you’re looking for an excellent breakfast or lunch that will allow you to escape the ordinary, or are in need of a quick cup of artisan coffee to go (yes, they have a drive-thru!), Sin of Cortez delivers in spades, 365 (and sometimes if you’re lucky 366) days a year, from 7am-2pm. Stop by and see for yourself, your taste buds will be glad you did. 45

UPGRADED YOU

Hello movers As you form your mental picture for how you want to look and feel for 2012, let’s consider a few guidelines to help with this process in order to ensure that you make quality, healthy decisions as you get the ball rolling on this years resolution. Learning and applying quality information is a must when it comes to preparing for any life change. As Socrates said, “We are what we repeatedly do.” So take this time to line up those repeated healthy decisions. In the coming year, this column will discuss a balanced mental, physical, and emotional paradigm that will include healthy physical habits, how to be nicer to yourself, and how to set attainable goals all while moving through life as smart and safely as possible. I hope you will use this column as a source of information to help address many of the common mental and physical patterns in local sport, exercise, and around the town activities that can lead to pain and discomfort. I will take a nose-to-toes approach in order to have a physical landmark to begin our balanced mind and body goal setting for 2012. By combining local sources, industry best practices, and a few of my time tested techniques, we will be able to scan the mind and body for potential areas of improvement. In the next three months we will discuss: • The neck and causes of Forward Head Posture (FHP) and Dowager’s Hump • The shoulder girdle, and which stretches will improve posture • The chest and ribs-- the 2 to 1, frontto-back training principle Until then, Move with Intention.

with Michael Burke

What can we do with so many severe weather changes to keep our skin, hair and bodies hydrated and moisturized? Dear Michael:

Drinking water is a must, staying out of the sun and using sunscreen daily and immersing your face and body with non-pore clogging, hydrating skin moisturizers is key. Getting yourself through this season and staying moisturized is your gift to yourself. Body creams and lotions are mainstay products since they hydrate and nourish the skin. I recommend Molton Brown vitalizing vitamin AB+C body hydrating gel or Fake Bake-mistifier oil free moisturizing spray. Dullness, rough texture and redness can hinder the skin’s ability to glow. Try MuFace daily moisturizing complex. When applied topically, the herbs, plants, and fruits meld together to create overall skin health. Clinique Turnaround Overnight Radiance Moisturizer gives your complexion a healthy glow overnight by gently polishing and hydrating dull rough skin. Once again you can

achieve beautiful texture, beautiful skin. As far as I’m concerned the lip must-have for the season is Nivea’s “Kiss Of Moisture.” This rich formula provides long lasting moisture to protect lips from dryness. Enriched with natural Jojoba oil and Shea butter leaves lips feeling soft and smooth looking. I have about 8 tubes throughout my home, salon and automobile. After all this winter dryness, your hair could end up paying the price. The good news is that any hair can be repaired-all you need are the right products. I recommend Moroccan oil or Schwartzkopf BC Time Restore Shampoo with CoQ10. You’re never too young and you’re never too old to begin a skincare regimen. By protecting your skin with broad-spectrum SPF and using daily moisturizer, you’ll help stave off the signs of dry, rough, and blotchy skin from our ever changing weather. The Dreaded, but Necessary Conversation

Financial advice from Renee Michel, MBA, Financial Advisor

As you get ready to make the promise “to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer” it’s important to sit down and discuss finances; your personal financial situation as it currently stands as well as your financial expectations as a couple. It is not easy but it is necessary. A divorce attorney out of Washington, D.C. recently revealed that financial issues were the primary reason for 90% of the cases he handled in the last year. Don’t put it off – do it now so down the road your marriage has one less hurdle to overcome. Start by setting a date for the talk. Pour each other a glass of wine or a cold beer and come prepared. The following is a list of items you need to have available.

Income (Gross Annual and Net Monthly Take Home Pay) Credit score Monthly, quarterly and annual expenses Student loan debt Credit card debt Personal loan debt Auto loan debt Mortgage debt Savings (retirement and personal)

Be honest and open about your financial health, concerns and goals. Begin your conversation by asking and answering the following questions. 1. Should we combine bank, credit and savings accounts or keep our money separate? 2. Is it important to create and stick to a budget? 3. Does each person’s debt remain his/her

own or does it get paid from a combined account? 4. How can we make our goals a reality? 5. Who will pay the bills? Do you handle this task together, take turns or assign it to one party?

These are just a few questions to get you going. Don’t short change yourself and keep debt or worries to yourself. Marriage is hard work. Start yours out on the right foot by making this discussion a top priority. Salud!

Bad Breath By Dr. John Nelsen, DDS

omance is in the air, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and with it the expectation of that fateful kiss from our special valentine. Preparing for that once-a-year evening can be easier than you might think, with a little planning. All you need to do is make that reservation early, not just at your favorite restaurant, but with your favorite dental office as well. In planning for these special dates we often concentrate the details like where to go or what to wear, and what to do after dinner. We often overlook the one thing that could bring the most romantic of evenings to a grinding halt: bad breath. Thankfully, this powerhouse of romantic destruction is easily prevented and if you’re already at odds with it, easily treatable as well. Brushing and flossing your teeth daily is mandatory to maintaining proper dental hygiene and with it, fresh breath. Each time we sit down for a meal, particles of the food we eat remain in our mouth. Failing to remove these food particles by brushing and flossing encourages bacterial growth on

our tongue, especially the back of the tongue, between our teeth and around our gum-line. This bacterial growth causes bad breath, and the smell of lingering food particles in between your teeth will only make it worse. Nothing will keep your mouth healthy and your breath fresh as regular dental cleanings. The American Dental Association recommends at least two professional cleanings a year to maintain optimal dental health. These cleanings remove the bacteria and plaque that reside deeper in the gingival pockets. Bad breath can put an early end to even the most romantic of plans. Keep your breath free and clear this Valentine ’s Day by avoiding odorous foods like onions or garlic both before and during your date. Remember to brush and floss before dinner and it might not be a bad idea to pack a travel toothbrush for a quick trip to the bathroom before you leave the restaurant. Keeping that breath fresh and clean will ensure the sweetest Valentine’s Day possible and even improve your love life later on!

Your eyes have more to say than you may think! By Dr. Randy Landis, DDS, OMS

One of the nicest things you can do for yourself is to make sure that you are being the best you can possibly be! Do you take note of dark circles under your eyes or extra skin that hangs down over your eyelids? Do you raise your eyebrows to lift up your forehead in the mirror in order to see what your eyes look like? Do you feel like you look tired even though you don’t feel tired? If you answered yes to any of these questions you could be experiencing loss of elastic fibers in the facial skin. Our diet and lifestyle can play a major role in the creation of dark circles or puffy skin around the eyes, and there are almost endless non-surgical options to help. For a quick fix though, there are also a number of non-invasive, outpatient procedures that will get the job done nearly overnight! There comes a time in each indi-

52

vidual’s life when enough is enough and a consultation for removal of the excess fatty tissue and skin is the right choice. One of the most common facial cosmetic surgical procedures we perform is cosmetic eyelid surgery. Over the past 24 years we have brought some of the latest technologies and techniques to Northern California. Few other areas of your face can define your mood, energy level and overall state of being as well as your eyes! When the contours of your eyelids are bright and sculpted you have a new, refreshed, and vibrant facial appearance. More importantly, you’ll find that you are looking forward to seeing yourself in the mirror each morning and that newly found interest in yourself will translate directly to increased confidence throughout the day. Do something nice for yourself or a friend and see how your eyelids can be the best they can be!

Renewing Your Vows By Dr. Michelle L. Anderson, D.C., B.S. & Vincent Commendatore, D.C., B.S.N., R.N. ith January we rang in the New Year and you may be like the millions of Americans that hope to rejuvenate themselves with New Year’s resolutions: already forgetting your resolutions or, worse, moving in the opposite direction of achieving them. February, the month of declaring love, is your time to renew your vows to yourself. Most people want to be better, stronger, faster, smarter, more successful and happier, and New Year’s resolutions can be a good way to realize those goals. In order to have even a chance of succeeding you must first decide what your priorities are in life. Before setting any goals or resolutions, create a precious list of 4 to 6 priorities that describe your meaning for life, defining who you are and how you live. These precious priorities then can direct you in formulating precise and congruent macro-goals. Macro-goals should have concrete parameters and completion dates. They should be lofty yet realistic, and when you obtain each of these goals they should bring you closer to living true to your priorities. When your goals and priorities are in line, you will find it easier to stick to the game plan. Finally, where the rubber hits the road is creating the daily, weekly and monthly micro-goals and tasks to actually achieve your macro-goals. It is this punch card, action list or “to do” list that keeps you honest and focused for weeks and months to come. Without the simple steps listed above, your resolutions can appear like pleasant yet unattainable ideas. I invite you to renew your New Year’s vows or write some for the first time. Incorporate all three VERY important steps: Create your precious priorities, set macro-goals and come up with your daily punch card of micro-goals. May 2012 truly be your best year EVER!

Restoring History By Restoration Company’s Royce Peterson

am about to embark on the total restoration of a project that my client and I agree is a “Basket Case”. At first glance it doesn’t appear to be a promising endeavor as it is quite far gone. But there is hope! This classic mid 1800’s walnut library table has good “bones” from which to rebuild. We all have or have Royce goes to work had one or more of these restoring pieces of a once projects sitting around beautiful walnut library table. in our garages for so long that we have lost parts, pieces and perhaps, interest in reuniting them into a finished form. They deserve a second look as many of these seemingly hopeless projects can be brought back from the dead. What seems daunting to you may be relatively routine to me. When it comes to these types of projects, I’ve seen almost everything over the years. So, this table has some major struc-

tural problems. The drawers are worn and sag because their runners have been ground into dust over the years of carrying a heavy load. The face of one drawer is oak, which doesn’t match the two other walnut drawers. Missing parts have been recreated along the way using dissimilar woods and crudely nailed in. The glue has given up and the finish needs to be removed and a new one applied. Is it worth the effort? Sentimental value plays a big role in answering this question, as does antiquity. We consider these to be heritage pieces and as such deserving of our attention. Made early on in our country’s history by craftsmen, these pieces have value and tell a story worth hearing. Time to get to work! I’ll be busy with this table over the next few weeks. As it comes together, I’ll photograph the process and detail the efforts for you in next month’s issue. Stop by with your project and have a look as I restore this piece of history.

"Beary" Kirshner Updates by Desireé DeLattre

he Barry R. Kirshner Wildlife Foundation is here for Valentine’s season with “bear-hugs.” Irresistibly adorable, this cuddly bunch can’t wait to show off during your visit to the foundation this winter! Meet Tom, BooBoo and a young, female cub waiting to be adopted and given a name. All three European Brown Bears were born into great danger of being euthanized, that is, until The Kirshner Foundation came to the rescue. With Kirshner’s expertise, knowledge, and dedication, these cubs have received a second chance to thrive, continuing the reputation the foundation has upheld for over 15 years. However, just as a child needs a family to grow in order to be happy and healthy, these cubs are looking for a family to support them. With even a small donation, you can help give these baby bears the quality of life they’ve been promised. In addition, you, your family, or organization has the opportunity to sponsor and name the female brown bear cub. This February, give some love to the wild side of life. After the post-traumatic stress your wallet may still be experiencing from the holidays, a sponsorship may be out of the question, but you can still help! In order to give their animals a new life and home, The Kirshner Foundation needs to have an on-site home for education. They are looking for a portable classroom to teach volunteers in, so any donations or leads for that would be greatly appreciated. Tours to visit the cubs are also easily affordable for the whole family, and volunteers are always in need. Detailed information regarding tours and other opportunities can be found at www.kirshner.org or via telephone (530) 345-1700. Visit Kirshner today: 4995 Durham-Pentz Rd., Oroville CA. 55
