FROM THE EDITOR I am a Chico girl. I spent my summers with a tanned back to the sun, hunting the space within my shadow in the creek for tadpoles. Bare feet were blackened from playing on hot asphalt and toughened by cool branches as I climbed high into the trees that canopy the Avenues. I learned to read, write and wonder at Hooker Oak School where rectangular windows quilt the building and catch the sun like fish scales. Sprout Awards were currency and friends were made and lost on the blacktop as the unsteady rhythm of the handball’s wheezy bounce ticked off the treasured minutes of recess. I went to soccer practice on every school’s field in town. I perfected the Cougar Jack in Junior High. “C-J-H-S [clap, clap] Best!” I decked myself out in red and gold for Almond Bowl games and joined the mass noontime pilgrimage along the Esplanade to lunches at Aca Taco, Island Smoothies and Pizza Face. I threw my red cap in the air at graduation and left for college with a “Chico Is My Hometown” bumper sticker. I went away to see the world and came back to see my family. After more than ten years away, I was back in town working for Upgraded Living and looking for a place to live. I pulled up to a potential house to rent to take a tour and a fellow former Hooker Oak kid peeked over the neighboring fence and playfully threw chunks of bark at me. “Act your age!” I yelled half-joking, turning red in front of the landlord. “I’m 24!” He yelled back, serious, but with a big smile. I signed the lease and fell for the neighbor boy. Nearly four years later, he’s still my Valentine and the reason why I’ve stayed in this charmingly-annoyingly small, beautifully-inconveniently rural town. It’s been worth it--trading the traffic for trails, dress-codes for taco trucks and anonymity for familiarity. Being a part of Upgraded Living magazine has been a way to reunite myself with the community and find new appreciation in its art, culture and people. I have loved working with each tremendously talented, creative, driven person who helps make this little publication come to life each month. I have been inspired by the people and events we’ve photographed, written about and been involved with. I am honored to have been trusted by my longtime friend Aveed Khaki to take his business on my own adventure. And I’m humbled by the generous responses I’ve gotten from so many of you loyal readers who allow me to reflect and ramble publicly each month. I’m off to a new career adventure and Upgraded Living has a new den mother. Erin Wenham will win your heart over (if she hasn’t already with her photography) and I Briana Lindstrom can’t think of a better person to be the new Editor-In-Chief Editor-in-Chief of the magazine. Thank you for all the love, readers. You are all part of what makes Chico special to me. Happy Valentine’s Day!

LOCAL LEGEND

BY ERNEST ALDRICH PHOTOS BY GUILLAUME MARCHISSEAU

WARREN HASKELL

W

arren Haskell has always been involved with music. Both of his parents were amateur musicians, his dad was a percussionist and his mother played the bassoon, so it seemed perfectly natural to the third grader that he would be enrolled in a summer band class. “I spent the summer learning to play the double belled euphonium, which, to a small child seemed more like a tuba,” he says. “But we moved in the fall and I never performed with that group.” In about the 5th grade, his best friend, Kenny, was playing the guitar so Warren’s mom started him on guitar lessons. His teacher was not well acquainted with some of the pitfalls which can arise in the unsuspecting student. “As I was developing my skills I began practicing selections which were beyond my reach causing me to develop some distracting habits,” Warren explains. “Then in high school, I began taking music theory and appreciation from Bob Proctor who was the orchestra conductor. He was a great man and he helped me develop a deep understanding and appreciation for

music theory.” “When I got to the University of Southern California (USC) School of Music, I took classes and lessons from the esteemed music professor James Smith. He turned out to be not only a wonderful mentor, but a great friend as well. It was Jim Smith who noticed and helped me dispense with those aforementioned, annoying habits and helped me develop a unique, personal and identifiable classical technique.” During Warren’s third year at USC he was offered the opportunity to be the featured soloist performing the Castelnuovo-Tedesco guitar concerto with the New York Youth Symphony Orchestra in Carnegie Hall. He says, “I was somewhat intimidated by the prospect at first, so I figured I’d let my friend and mentor make that decision for me. To my surprise, he says, ‘By all means, go for it!’” The Youth Orchestra consisted of many Juilliard students and was extremely well-thought of. After his performance, the New York Times music critic called his playing “fluid and attractive.”

He finished his schooling at USC in 1984 with a Master of Music/ Classical Guitar Performance. He taught at several colleges and gave private guitar lessons in the Los Angeles area until 1991 when he moved his family to Chico. He performed regularly in several local venues and in 1993 began a 12 year stint at CSU Chico doing individual instruction in classical guitar and classroom music theory. Current CSU Chico music faculty member Tobin Roye remembers, “I used to go regularly to hear Warren play at Perché No! I would bring him difficult pieces and he would play them flawlessly. He is a master of sight reading. I’ve never met anyone who even approaches his brilliance. I was his student both before and during my time at CSU Chico and can say, he has been one of the two most important teachers in my experience.” His love of the classical guitar inspired Warren in 2007 to launch “The Guitar Project” at the 1078 Gallery. He says, “The Guitar Project began with the eager and generous participation of local artists and has grown favorably. My idea was to make wonderful guitar music accessible 11

“I’m showing my students that they have the capacity to transform an audience with their skill and understanding.” for everyone. The sophistication of the audience has developed accordingly with the project and I’ve been able to bring in more remarkable artists from the upper echelons of classical guitar performance. I’m always interested in speaking with patrons who are willing to actively participate in keeping our performances at a reasonable cost.” Another of Warren’s great loves is the teaching experience. He says, “There are plenty of really wonderful guitar teachers in town, capable of conveying the rudiments of the instrument. For my purposes, promoting the classical music I love and cherish, it takes a particular kind of student. I’m always looking for students willing to put forth that extra effort to understand and perform music which creates a more sensitive atmosphere. I’m showing my students that they have the capacity to transform an audience with their skill and understanding.” Last summer Warren read The Essential Gandhi, an anthology of the writings and ideas of Mahatma Gandhi. “In it,” says Warren, “Gandhi asks people to strive to be better, to be more of who they are. He led by example. He is famous for saying ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world.’” Another icon whose principles Warren has embraced is Mildred Lisette Norman who took the name “Peace Pilgrim” on January 1, 1953 and walked across the country for 28 years extolling peace. She once said, “The way of peace

is the way of love. Love is the greatest power on earth. It conquers all things.” Noting Warren’s leanings, it seemed only natural he would be approached in 2007 by a former choir member, Lyndell Ellingson, to direct an as yet unformed chorus. She had sung for him briefly at what is now the Chico New Vision Congregational Church where he has been the music director since 1998. Lyndell had been singing with the noted “Harmonia.” When that group folded some of the ladies had interest in continuing their music, so Lyndell contacted Warren. He had only two requirements, that it be a mixed chorus and that he receive the compensation. That was the beginning of “Doin’ It Justice,” the chorus which brings songs extolling peace, kindness, justice and understanding to light. “Doin’ It Justice” has performed a spring concert since 2009 and has also sung at Martin Luther King, Jr. events since then. Warren loves the story, “When a ranking British official said ‘You are only one small man. What can you hope to accomplish?’ Gandhi simply smiled and said, ‘In the end you [the British] will just walk away.’ He was able to love the English as well as his own people in a way that was imperceptible to them. He told us to ‘Be the change you want to see,’ and he was that person,” concludes Warren.

Soroptimists are defined as a global organization who work together to improve the lives of women and children through programs leading to social and economic empowerment. Soroptimist International boasts over 100,000 members in over 113 countries. At the United Nations, they are represented as a non-governmental organization – a “global voice for women” working through awareness, advocacy and action. Not many people in our area know just how influential the Soroptimists International of Chico are or that they even exist. Being a group of about 100 members makes them the largest Soroptimist group in America, and an incredible force of nature in our community. Through fundraising and their own giving, they raise money that funds scholarships, volunteer and service projects. “Members find that they are personally enriching their lives while helping others at the same.” Watching one of the weekly Soroptimists luncheons at the Elks Lodge, even for just a short time, the passion these women have for Chico, the surrounding area, and the world as a whole is clear and inspiring. They develop projects like STOP (Stop Trafficking of Persons) and Steps Without Fear (teaching about landmines) support education and awareness surrounding topics that affect women internationally. Around Chico, some of their projects include funding for the Chico Museum and Butte County Library, and opening the women’s wing of the Salvation Army. A recent goal headed by President Gayle Aylward is to raise self esteem in junior high teens, focusing mainly on young women. All the junior highs in town are participating in an assembly where an informative video will be shown followed

by a discussion with professional women. “You are so vulnerable at that age. There are so many big life changes. The idea is to teach these girls to be empowered and that they can achieve their dreams,” says Gayle. The Soroptimists hope to inspire others and uplift and support those within their group. While sitting with a few group members and asking what is special about their group in particular, all want to talk at once. Smiles around the table are exchanged. “We agree to disagree sometimes on an idea which is important.” “Some groups like this get very cliquey. We aren’t like that.” “It’s a very professional setting, but wrapped in a warm blanket.” Billie Sommerfield, prior president-elect and devout committee member says, “I love the mission of the organization, the wonderful women I have met at the local, regional, national, and international levels. The sense that I am part of something spiritually and practically important for women around the world.” International Soroptimists of Chico invite any interested community members to join them at one of the weekly luncheons to discover just what and how much they do. Their upcoming 29th Annual Home and Garden Show, March 21st and 22nd is the biggest fundraiser of the year. “Exotic plants, sumptuous decor, talented designers… from affordable home improvements and energy saving ideas to luxurious furnishings and custom art.” Attend the show to support the Soroptimists, and grow funds to help women and children all around the globe. Browse around the Soroptomists International of Chico website sichico.com to learn about all the ways these philanthropists impact our community and the world. CONNECT

The goal is to promote Chico by promoting its art culture. Julian and I also have a deep love for people and want to build (and have been building) camaraderie in this town. We want this documentary to be the start of action to build Chico’s art scene by inspiring things like more venues dedicated

T

alent is located everywhere in this town—in every direction and found in the most unexpected places. Unfortunately, most of us only get a glimpse from the surface. For example, there are over 350 performing acts in Chico—over one percent of Chico’s population is either a member of a band or local performing act. But it is that small percentage that gives Chico its uniquely colorful shade in the Northern California sunlight. Julian Ruck, a local performing artist and organizer of Electric Canyon Convergence, had the idea to bring together the area’s musicians, promoters and venues to talk about what they can do to improve Chico’s music community. “With all that we have in Chico we should be able to do something together,” says Julian. With having years of experience being a local performer, Ruck has always had an inside perspective of how large and unique the music scene is in Chico, something he wants to bring to the public eye both locally and nationally. After sending out a social media message, Ruck quickly got the attention of Foxy E. Jeff, a Mass Communication Design Major

18

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM FEBRUARY 2015

at Chico State and owner of Get Foxy production company. Quickly, Jeff and Julian acknowledged how similar their visions were and wanted to figure out a way to get every performer’s voice heard—a look into what’s really going in our eclectic musical community. Initially, the idea was to make a few short YouTube videos with brief video clips and performances. Though, with all the participation and enthusiasm from people in the community, it soon became obvious Jeff and Julian couldn’t stop with just a YouTube video. In a short amount of time, the project grew from being a five-minute promo video to a documentary film with the appropriate title I Play in Chico: A Rockumentary. With over 40 cameos from local musicians and 18 interviews filled with content, “IPiC” is what’s going to capture the overflowing talent this town offers—every genre, every venue— all expressed with hundreds of live local performances. There are certain towns scattered throughout the United States (Athens, Georgia to Akron, Ohio) with considerably small populations. Music is the recognizable

to art/ live music and more outside recognition for the talent here. —Fox

heartbeat of those small cities and the objective that both Jeff and Julian are striving for is to brand Chico as one of those towns. “None of this would be possible if Chico wasn’t such a cool place. It’s not just us doing something, we are simply putting up a mirror to what’s already going on,” says Julian Ruck, I Play in Chico Director and Producer. Another step in the plan to popularize Chico’s music scene is a non-stop 24/7 concert to be held at The Tackle Box, featuring hundreds of local music acts. The current Guinness World Record for Longest Multi-Artist Concert is 15 days and 12 hours. Jeff and Julian are spearheading an effort to double that current record with a 30-day concert, throughout the entire month of April. Naturally, they intend to film a documentary of that attempt as well.

Meet Max. “When the doctor told me I had diabetes, I thought it meant my sex life was over.” Max began to avoid his wife and would only go to bed after she was asleep. “I just felt dejected.” His wife asked him what was wrong, but Max didn’t want to talk about his fears. He also began to worry that he might get feet and circulation problems and wouldn’t be able to go hunting with his friends anymore. “I felt like I wasn’t the man I used to be.” Max decided to contact his local Diabetes Education Program. During his individual appointment, the diabetes nurse reassured Max that many men worry that diabetes will cause health problems and affect their sex life, but if Max kept his blood sugars, blood pressure and cholesterol in target range, he could keep healthy with diabetes. The Diabetes nurse also assured Max that men with diabetes can still have healthy sex lives. And if they do run into difficulty, there are many new treatments that can address the problem. “I felt like a weight had been lifted off shoulders. I felt that I could make a difference in my health and diabetes.” Impotence or Erectile Dysfunction (ED) If you are worried that you may be experiencing erectile dysfunction , you are not alone. About 18 million men in this country have erectile dysfunction. The number could actually be much higher since

many men may keep the problem a secret. Among the many causes, ED can be a side effect of diabetes. When nerves and vessels are damaged from high blood sugar levels over time it stops the blood vessels from growing larger with the flow of blood that makes the penis erect. Another common cause of sexual dysfunction is psychological. It can be caused by fear, worry, anger or sadness. Then once a problem occurs, fear of failure can make matters worse. Treatment for Erectile Dysfunction The first step to keep your sex life healthy is to improve your blood sugar control. Have you let your blood sugar levels get a little too high in the past? Start making changes today to improve your life. The American Diabetes Association recommends that you keep your morning blood sugar levels less than 130mg/dl or your A1c less than 7% to avoid diabetes problems. Other modifiable risk factors include smoking, high cholesterol and blood pressure, excessive alcohol intake and sedentary lifestyle. Sexual health is important at any age. If you are having difficulty, we encourage you to reach out to your healthcare team to improve your health and sex life and learn about treatment for ED. Diabetes Educators are also available to support your efforts in making lifestyle changes so you can live the healthiest life possible. The Diabetes Education Program at Feather River Hospital is nationally recognized by the American Diabetes Association and offers individual, group appointments and a FREE monthly support group. LOVE YOUR BODY BEFORE

Breanne and Antonio Breanne began to gain some extra weight as a teenager and reached her heaviest point in the fall of 2014. She began to feel out of place in a crowd-like everyone was noticing how much she weighed. She wanted to get her self confidence back, reach a healthier weight and gain better health habits so she could eventually have a baby with her beloved husband, Antonio.

AFTER

When Breanne’s aunt found an article for Take Shape For Life in Upgraded Living, she brought it up to Breanne and offered to sponsor her. Breanne took her up on the offer and began losing weight instantly. “The first week I did the program, with Amy Lacey as my Health Coach, I lost 8 lbs! If 8 lbs in a week isn’t motivation, I don’t know what is. I get to eat every couple of hours so I never feel like I’m starving. The food is full of nutrients so I don’t have to take any kind of vitamin supplements and I feel great! What I love the most is that I lost enough weight to actually enjoy physical activities when before they were intimidating.”

BEFORE

For eleven months, Antonio who was stationed across the country in the

Andrea Werth I was sick and had been in constant pain since the beginning of chemotherapy. My weight continued to go up while my doctors kept telling me I needed to lose it. As a cancer survivor, weight can play a role in recurrence, so my doctors were concerned. I knew I needed to exercise but it was hard to do when I hurt. Dr. Whitney Dixon said I needed to see Dr. Christiane Wear and learn about the Take Shape for Life program. She thought it would be what I needed to get to a healthy weight again. I have lost 90 pounds on the plan and I feel amazing! There was a time when I had difficulty bending over and tying my shoes--I used the stairs to help. Now I can run up those same stairs with ease. I have my “old-self” back! It was great to rediscover the confident, fun, outgoing person I was once. I missed her. I love helping people and I have a new-found passion for health. I am able to combine those two joys with Take Shape for Life as a Certified Health Coach. It makes me so happy when I hear how a client feels better than they have in years or was able to finally sleep through the night. My journey has allowed me the opportunity to be able to help others find health in their own lives.

military would support Breanne from afar. He’d tell her how beautiful she was and sometimes fall asleep by her side on Skype. When he finally came home, Breanne was excited to show him her progress. “He always loves my body no matter what shape it’s in, but I knew he’d love my new confidence. I’ve always admired his huge heart and his compassion for other people. He will be the first person to hold out his hand to someone in need. He is so supportive of all that I do, gives me great advice, and ultimately the courage to pursue my journey for health,” says Breanne. When Antonio first saw Breanne’s new look he said he felt complete happiness. “Once she pulled up to the curb at the airport and stepped out of the car, I was in awe of her beauty. It makes me so happy to know she feels better about herself and is so determined to reach her goals. She’s a very intelligent, beautiful, and caring woman. She has it all and I couldn’t ask for a better wife.” Breanne plans on continuing with her journey for health with Amy Lacey as her coach. “I want to keep going--not until I reach a specific weight, but until I am fully loving the skin I’m in.” This program has changed my life and that of my family. Yes I lost weight, but I am also now

Christiane Wear, DC As a Health Care Provider I was frustrated seeing my patients get less healthy as the years went by. When patients asked why they were having chronic back pain or ongoing health issues, I didn’t have answers other than lose weight. Then a colleague asked me what I was doing for my patients who needed to lose weight.... At that time I had to take a closer look at myself. I was 40+ pounds overweight and struggling with working and keeping up with my two young daughters. I would come home from work and just want to sit on the couch. I decided I would try the Take Shape For Life Program, I loved the idea of a Free Health Coach! I lost 40 lbs, dropped 40 cholesterol points, and gained energy and confidence. I have kept the weight off since 2009. My friends, family and patients started asking what I was doing. I personally had tried 25 “DIETS” before I found TSFL. So if you are a professional dieter, without HOPE that anything will work, and you have tried everything, I would say give our medically based, science backed program a try. What do you have to lose? It was a natural fit, as a chiropractor to offer The Habits of Health and Take Shape for Life to my patients. In my first year as a Certified Health Coach my patients lost over 3,000 lbs. They felt better and had less inflammation and pain. It was the first time in my 15 year career that I could help patients make a full health transformation. I had lots of tools as a chiropractor; adjustments, massage, physiotherapies, but I couldn’t adjust off 40-50 or 100 lbs and help someone regain their health. In December of 2013, I retired from active chiropractic practice and now I am a full time Certified Take Shape for Life Health Coach.

Estrogen Regulates Fat Burning in a Woman’s Body By James S. Nagel, MD

" When you lose your vision, you lose contact with things. When you lose your hearing, you lose contact with people." -Helen Keller

This is no time for gimmicks and quick fixes. In order to succeed in weight loss, women will need to get to the root cause of their weight gain. How do women gain weight? They need answers, not some tedious discussion about calories in versus calories out. Weight gain has more to do with hormones, especially estrogen in women than excessive caloric intake. The size, efficiency, and speed of a woman’s metabolic engine are estrogen-dependent. The tendency to gain weight no matter how well you watch your diet and exercise may be the first clue that your estrogen levels are declining. A woman’s weight and how she looks have more to do with her estrogen production than caloric intake or exercise. Many women never experience a problem with weight until they reach age 35 or 40, just at the time when their estrogen levels begin to decline. This drop in estrogen has a slowing effect on their metabolism decreasing the efficiency of their metabolic engine to burn fat. Eventually the scales turn in favor of relentless weight gain. When estrogen is restored to adequate amounts it blocks the deposition of fat in the fat cells of the abdomen and trunk, while at the same time signaling the muscles to become more efficient at burning fat. 1 Mayes JS, Watson GH. 2004 Direct effects of sex steroid

s we age and grow busy with career and family, our parents and loved ones are aging as well. Those who once took care of us, taught us to ride our bikes, to tie our shoes, those who helped us with our homework and walked us down the aisle are growing older too. Life is so busy that we may not see changes in their health and mobility. When faced with a change in health, “Parents do not want to be a burden,” shares Isabella Stewart, the Assistant Administrator, “and adult children can feel guilt ridden and torn.” Butte Home Health and Hospice is here to help as loved ones age. After 30 years in business, they are vested in our community. A local, free standing, non-profit agency, Butte Home Health and Hospice is able to help people regain their independence after surgery, learn to deal with a new diagnosis such as diabetes, or stay safely in their home with a loved one’s care as they progress through the stages of Alzheimer’s. When your loved ones are reaching the end of their life, Butte’s hospice team is here to provide comfort, support and guidance to both patient and family wherever they may

be, at home, in assisted living, or in a skilled nursing facility. Brooke Quilici, the Administrator of Butte Home Health and Hospice, is a Public Health Nurse that graduated from Chico State, and along with her husband, Mike, opened Butte Home Health. They considered it the end of their rainbow, providing a service that they love in the community that they love. Butte started with a small team of people caring for a few patients. The word spread and Butte Home Health grew. As the years went by and the agency grew, Brooke and her team added many new programs and services. Butte had the first Medicare certified hospice in our community. After the death of her father who had battled dementia, Brooke was compelled to provide help to others walking the same path, and the Memory Loss program was born. There was a point when Brooke realized that not everyone that needed help, needed a skilled nurse or therapist. Some folks simply needed a ride to town, a meal prepared, someone to walk the dog, dust the shelves, help with a bath or play a game of cards. Insurance did not cover such things but

the need was there for a caring hand from someone folks could trust, so came Butte’s sister company, Butte Home Health Plus. The wide range of services that Butte offers helps Butte to help others reach their optimum level of health and independence. “We like to make ‘em better, pat ’em on the back, and send ‘em out into the world,” Brooke laughs as she is recalling an older couple that had been struggling in their rural home. “We did what we could to get them safe and independent.” It was several years later that Brooke got the call. The couple had put Butte Home Health in their will. “We thought they had nothing. It was like a little angel,” she shared. There is a wall as you enter Butte’s office. It is covered with cards and notes from patients and families. They call it their Rose Board, a place of reflection for all. Brooke smiles and shares, “If I am ever feeling down, I just spend a little time in front of the board and am revived.” Call Butte Home Health & Hospice to see what their family can do for yours at (530) 895-0462.

THREADING AND BROW SHAPE What is threading? Threading is one of the earliest forms of hair removal. It has gained popularity as a precise and gentle technique of shaping the eyebrows while giving long lasting results. The thread is first twisted then guided along the skin to remove the hair from the root. Is threading painful and is it gentle enough for sensitive skin? If done properly, threading should not be any more painful than waxing. It is gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin because the thread wraps around the hair rather than pulling on the skin. There are no chemicals or hot wax involved; therefore, there is less risk of inflammation or damage to the skin. Threading should be done by a licensed esthetician to ensure the highest sanitation standards and help prevent skin irritation.

How can I fill in my brows and keep them looking natural? I always recommend lightly filling in the brows in order to get the best shape. You can achieve a natural look by first outlining the shape using a brow pencil or small angled brush dipped in brow powder. This will be much easier to follow if you first have them shaped by a professional. After outlining, use feather-like strokes to lightly fill in the rest of the brow. Most importantly, use a spooly (a disposable mascara wand) to brush in and blend the product. Always chose a color closest to your hair color, but when in doubt go lighter.

PUCKER UP!

Tips for flawlessly kissable lips -- just in time for Valentine’s Day!

Hydrate Are your lips dry or even cracked? Chances are your whole body may be parched. A hydrated body = plump, hydrated lips

Be balm smart Reach for balms with the most hydrating ingredients, like shea butter, beeswax, or coconut, almond, and jojoba oils. These ingredients will help to lock in moisture and keep your lips supple all day.

Exfoliate Slough off dead skin cells with a simple scrub made from sugar and olive oil. Immediately follow with a hydrating balm or even petroleum jelly.

SPF Protect your pucker

Be lick-free

Lips are prone to sunburn, just like the rest of your body. Be sure that your daily balm contains an SPF of 15 or higher to protect from sun damage (even during colder months).

Lip-licking is a common habit that will actually diminish your lips’ protective barrier due to the digestive enzymes in your saliva.

WHAT GOES PERFECTLY WITH GREAT LIPS?

WHITE TEETH!

Here are three easy home remedies to whiten your teeth. Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide Make a runny paste and brush your teeth as usual. Hydrogen peroxide is an antibacterial agent and works great as a total mouth and gum cleaner. Baking soda is a gritty substance and can be too abrasive if used too often or if not diluted with enough hydrogen peroxide. Use this method daily.

Coconut Oil Pulling Put a spoonful of coconut oil in your mouth and swish it between your teeth for 5 to 20 minutes. It is also known for improving headaches, diabetes, asthma and acne as well. Don’t swallow or spit it down the sink as it can clog the pipes. The results vary and some question its effectiveness while others swear by it.

Strawberries and Baking Soda Mash up fresh strawberries into a paste and mix with a teaspoon of baking soda to make a paste. Spread onto dry teeth with toothbrush or finger and leave on for 5 minutes. Rinse well and brush with a fluoride toothpaste after to remove sugars from the strawberries. This method should be used once per week as acids from the strawberries can break down enamel.

BIDWELL PARK

TIMELY • KNOWLEDGEABLE • COMMUNICATIVE

Get your keys early with us*

AND ITS EARLY DEVELOPMENT

(A Romantic Timeline)

Without the 2000 acre piece of land that intersects Highway 99, Chico wouldn’t be the same and wouldn’t have transformed into what it is now. It represents more than just the site of playgrounds, swimming holes and cemented bike paths. It is a representation of Annie (and John) Bidwell’s love for this city, its citizens, and how they wanted to see it turn into something special. During my interviews for this month’s issue, I couldn’t ignore how many times I’ve heard how important the park is and how much it is involved in the lives of the population. February, the month of love, seems fitting for a reminder of how Bidwell Park evolved from those early days into the local romantic symbol it is now.

on time

“It embodies such natural grace and qualities of beauty as any city might be proud to possess.” --Rockwell D. Hunt, in his biography of John Bidwell

1852

John Bidwell acquired a piece of land called Rancho del Arroyo Chico. The land consisted of 26,000 acres and would eventually transform into present day Chico.

1905

Annie Bidwell deeded 1900 acres to the city of Chico for the use as a park by its residents, in accordance to John’s wishes after he died.

1911

An additional gift of several more acres was deeded to the development of playgrounds by Annie Bidwell. As always, she attached the following conditions: no alcohol, land must be used as public park, trees, shrubs and vines are to be preserved, no hunting and no public picnics on Sundays.

1918

In the summer, a dam was built to hold water for a temporary swimming pool on Big Chico Creek. This later became known as the “Sycamore Pool” and was located by a busy intersection near Vallombrosa Avenue.

BY MATTHEW MANFREDI

1921

Bidwell Parks Golf Links first officially opened in February of 1921 with the push of a petition signed by more than fifty citizens. It was the biggest development made to the park since it’s inception in 1905.

1925

Cement walls were poured to better hold the water of the Sycamore Pool, making it the city’s permanent swimming pool. Shortly after, new names were given to the city’s popular swimming holes, deeming them One Mile and Five Mile.

1927 The completion of the first

paved road on the south side of the park was now complete. Upper Park was now more accessible for public use.

Proposal of a memorial gateway to be constructed on Fourth Street was brought up in a planning meeting in 1931. The memorial gate was completed in December of the same year and constructed by Chico Marble Works. Ceremonies followed after the gate’s opening, celebrating the city’s hard work and efforts made to the park. The gate, the entrance to Bidwell Park, was a symbol of the park belonging to the citizens of Chico just as Annie Bidwell intended. Over the past 100 years, Bidwell Park has immensely changed into the beloved place we know and hold close to our hearts but strayed from the landscape Annie Bidwell always envisioned.

1923

Bath houses were built at the Upper Park dam (the popular swimming hole at the time) and Sycamore pool locations, offering the public and the use of toilets and showers.

THE RECENT OIL PRICE DROP A sudden decline in crude oil prices gave markets the jitters in the final weeks of the year. Since its June high of $115.19/barrel, Brent Crude lost over half its value, falling to $53.46/barrel at the close of the year.1 Gasoline prices followed oil, bringing the national average price to $2.299 at the end of December.2 Oil prices slid on a combination of high supply volume, caused in part by rising U.S. shale oil production, and expectations of lower global demand. Equity markets reacted nervously to crude oil’s slide largely

because of the economic implications for oil producers like Saudi Arabia, Russia and other emerging markets. These countries depend on oil revenues to balance their budgets and make debt payments. Cheap oil is a mixed blessing for the economy. On one hand, lower prices will likely boost consumer sentiment and increase consumer spending, which is great news for U.S. businesses. On the other hand, companies that depend on higher oil prices (such as domestic oil producers, transporters and suppliers) will struggle. However, oil

conglomerates have weathered low spot prices before. In fact, as recently as February 2009, it traded as low as $39.09 per barrel, and up until September of 2004, oil had NEVER traded at over $50 per barrel. We continue to find the energy sector attractive as part of a diversified portfolio. Oil companies provide shareholders price appreciation and dividends that have grown consistently over time. Chevron has increased its dividend payment to shareholders annually for over 70 years. 1 2

New Again Kitchen & Bath Presents

Meet The Designer

Ric Powers

E

ach month I look forward to my texts, calls and emails from New Again Kitchen & Bath’s Ric Powers where he calls me “Dahling” and tells me about his clients: “a gorgeous lady,”

“an adorable couple,” “a colorful pair,” and sometimes refers to himself as “Panda’s daddy,” Panda being his cat. He’s just as excited about his work as he is about his clients (and his cat), and it shows. Each kitchen is an exciting new project and he starts each job as any passionate artist would--by submerging himself in the soul of the piece. “I have to visit the home so it can set the scene for the design it needs,” Ric explains. “People ask me ‘What’s your typical design preference?’ But it changes from home to home. I visit the home and feel the direction we need to go. I want the kitchen to suit the home, not to feel pushed or shoved or stuck in. It needs to look like it belongs there.” Ric’s grandparents were custom cabinet builders and his eye and feel for design is clearly inherent, though his ability to please customers and fit a look with a home and the personality of its dwellers has developed into a superpower that even Hollywood’s stars wanted a piece of. After growing up in Corning, then graduating from Bethany College in Santa Cruz with a degree in psychology, and Otis Parsons Design School in LA with a degree in floorplanning, Ric spent his early career in what he refers to as “my beloved LA” where he went from working at Home Depot to the high-end Expo Design Center. Many of his clients

ANTIQUE DIY

Pretty in Pastel What can’t you do with acrylic paint? This incredibly simple and affordably chic project is a new favorite that will brighten your home and your day. We found these lovely old colored and clear glass jars at Eighth & Main in downtown Chico, and knew we could turn them into something extra special for spring. These glossy pastels create a fresh and dreamy look that we’re just head-over-heels for! Here’s how you can

PROJECT + PHOTOS BY ERIN WENHAM

create this look for yourself:

MATERIALS USED Glass bottles, varying sizes White acrylic craft paint Mint green acrylic craft paint Floral vials

S T E P 1 Collect your bottles, and

get creative! There are so many gems to be found at antique and thrift stores, or you can repurpose your old jam and condiment jars.

S T E P 5 Holding the bottle horizontal, cover the mouth with your hand or a paper towel and turn the bottle to ensure that the paint spreads all over the inside of the bottle.

S T E P 2 Thoroughly wash and

dry all bottles to be used. S T E P 3 If your paint is fairly thick, add a few drops of water to the paint dispenser and shake well. This will help the paint to spread more easily. S T E P 4 Holding your bottle upright, pour in your first stream of paint, making sure that the paint is running down the side of the bottle, rather than into the center. Do this once or twice more (depending on the size of your container), rotating the bottle to cover all sides. This step may need to be repeated to achieve full coverage.

42

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM FEBRUARY 2015

S T E P 6 Once the inside of the bottle is fully coated, pour any excess paint back into the paint dispenser. S T E P 7 Let your bottles sit upright overnight or until completely dry. 8 Because acrylic paint will wash away with water, use disposable floral vials or test tubes to place fresh flowers.

amellia Sinensis. It’s the plant that has consumed Michael Fritt’s passion for the last 4 years.

When starting Butte College, Michael had two areas of interest for his career path: weather and horticulture. He was at a crossroads and whichever direction he chose would direct his future. However, he “didn’t much like guessing the weather, so [he] went with horticulture.” From that point on his hands have always been one with the dirt, be it as a landscaper or as an employee for Mendon’s Nursery. “Working at Mendon’s

was like going back to school all over again. There is so much to know.” In 2010, during a big sale Michael was at work and collapsed. “I hallucinated…they found out I had chronic Lyme Disease.” Before he had to leave Mendon’s, after three and a half years, he bought all the Camellia Sinensis that they had. Being around the plants so frequently and learning what they needed to flower gave Michael an idea.

At his tranquil retreat of a home in the Golden Feather district of Oroville, Michael planted his beloved tea plants. As they grew on his quarter of an acre lot, he watched with expectant eyes as the tea bushes pushed their way through the soil. They flourished in the acidic soil of the wooded mountains. He had John, owner of Mendon’s order him up some more. Now in 2015 he has a total of 500 plants. After joining the US League of Tea

Your Valentine will sparkle In a locally bought jewel. Just a little gifting tip. Love always, U.L.

We have been blessed to be a part of so many love stories over the years. One that comes to mind is a couple who had been happily married for 30 years.

She had

kept her original engagement ring that was something they could afford as Chico State students at the time.

She later inherited

a diamond ring that was very worn and she decided to take the diamond out and have it mounted in her old engagement ring. The couple came in together when it was done and ready to pick up. When we opened the box to show her, tears came to her eyes as he put the ring on her finger.”

As a jewelry designer, I meet many couples with terrific love stories. I would have to say my all time favorite is my inlaws, Bill and Lee Sheridan. On a cool San Francisco day, July 26, 1946, they were set up on a blind date. Bill was a Merchant Marine officer who had just come back from a tour of duty at sea. Lee had been working for the US Navy in a San Francisco office. They had mutual friends who thought they may hit it off and set them up on a blind date. Lee told me that at the end of the date she was completely “smitten” and thought he was such a terrific guy, she planned to “glom onto” him. Nine days later they went to Reno and were married. Bill had quit his job after handling a few loose ends and they were inseparable ever since then. Their love withstood many trials over the 55 years of marriage, business, children etc. until Bill passed away leaving Lee in 1991. She would gaze upon his military portrait throughout each day. She told me on so many occasions, “Look at my Bill, I sure loved him and I miss him every day.” She passed away in November 2005 and I feel sure they met in Heaven and are inseparable once again.”

A young couple came by Country Squyres’

Antiques for

several

Saturdays to look at an engagement ring they had admired. Unknown to the young woman, her partner came back one day and put the ring on layaway. He then asked us to please put the ring out in the showcase each Saturday until it was paid, on the chance that “she” came by. When the layaway was completed, he came in early on a Saturday bringing a huge armload of flowers from the Farmer’s Market. We put them out all over the store in every available vase. When they came in later that morning they were accompanied by her father. He asked if they could try on the ring “one more time.” He then knelt down and asked her to marry him, and for her father’s permission. He placed the ring on her finger which we had previously sized to fit. We were able to photograph this very special event and present the pictures to both of them on the following Saturday.”

A lovely couple came in to create their engagement ring using family diamonds. She had her great-grandmother’s old European cut diamond and he had inherited

several

ranging

in size from his mother, as well as his grandmothers. The couple hoped we could blend together all the diamonds so that all those they loved or love would be included into their wedding rings. We found a way to weave all those diamonds together to suit the bride’s personal taste! An heirloom was created bringing together several generations of family filled with sentiments of its past. They couldn’t be happier or more in love!”

Everything in our lives has been serendipitous,” says Chris. After a few years of dating, Chris knew Julie was The One, and when he walked into Gabrielle Ferrar to find her ring, he knew it was the right place. He had a beautiful custom ring made--a pearl set in a sea of diamonds. At Patrick Ranch (where they would later be married), he set up candles, Champagne and even learned how to play a song on the piano. Julie’s friend blindfolded her and drove her to meet Chris and on the way, “Marry Me” came on the radio. Chris popped the question, Julie said “yes” and on their wedding day, as a tribute to the serendipity that guided them back to each other, they walked down the aisle to “Marry Me.”

It was Valentine’s Day last year when my best friend surprised me on a patio over Lake Almanor where he knelt down under a homemade sign that said “Marry Me.” Earlier that day, my mom gave me a box that she instructed me to open “later that night.” When I opened it after the proposal, it was my baby ring--a special way for my mom to show her support. To celebrate, all my besties surprised me at a nearby restaurant with a delicious dinner and plenty of Champagne! I look forward to growing old with you, QBaby. Love you! Happy Valentine’s Day.”

been practicing for decades now. If even a little of that love and passion gets channeled into the ring you were to buy from her, you could consider your relationship well launched. You may have met people like her, people who love what they do so much that they can’t wait to share that love with anyone who shows interest in it. Your best teachers were like that, too, and so are most artists in any medium, anxious to pull you into their sphere of enthusiasm. So, if you go to Lisa Nolta to have her fashion a ring for you, it’s not going to be an impersonal business transaction. She’ll take your hand in hers, and she’ll study it with care. She’ll be thinking about the design that would best suit that hand, looking to see how your fingers taper, or whether they’re long or short. She’ll be thinking about how often you’ll be wearing that ring, and on what occasions. She’ll be interested in the tone of your skin, and your pigmentation, assessing the kinds of color that would best grace your hand or reflect your personality. She’ll be asking you questions intended to elicit information about your personality. Or, if you’re one of those young men under 25 about to make the biggest purchase of your life, she’ll be finding out about the one you love, the person for whom this special and entirely unique piece of jewelry is intended. “If you think about the jewelry business the ways I do,” she told me, “you know that what you’re doing is selling love. You are selling love. If it’s an engagement ring,” she said, “it’s a token of love. Obviously. But every piece that goes out our door is an expression of love. And when people die, what is found among their most treasured possessions? Pictures and jewelry. It’s always those two things we hold on to most dearly. I remember my grandparents wearing their rings. They wore them 50 years. I have those rings now, and no amount of money could buy them from me. It means a lot more than just metal and stone.” Diamonds, it’s been said, are a girl’s best friend, but they were never Lisa Nolta’s favorite 56

stone. Though she’s come to appreciate them more each year she’s been in the jewelry business, her initial passion for gems was focused on the more colorful stones. “It all starts for me with gems,” she told me. “I had a half-karat diamond my mom gave me when I was 20, but I didn’t even like diamonds at first. I love colored gems. I’ve got over 4,000 loose gems. My mom and I built the store on our love of color, and design. We both just love the excitement of having a customer light up and say ‘that’s just what I was looking for,” even though they may not have quite known what they were looking for.” Even now, after years of designing fine jewelry, she still tends to favor the color found in gemstones that give expression to nature’s broader palette—from rubies to emeralds to turquoise and sapphires. The necklace that won the top prize for jewelry design has an interesting bit of provenance. Lisa told me of how she had set her eyes on that prize in 1984, back when she was still in college. That was the year The American Gem Trade Association decided it wanted to foster and recognize creativity in jewelry design. When Lisa read of the competition, she said to herself “ Oh my gosh, I want to enter this. I want to make jewelry and do that.” And twenty years later, after the competition had grown, attracting jewelry design entrants from all over the world, she won that competition. Spectrum, the umbrella organization that sponsored the competition, is made up of the big five of the jewelry trade, a business that is much more varied than most people realize. One impetus for the competition was to encourage more color in jewelry designs that might include rings, necklaces, buckles, earrings, and the full range of ways people adorn themselves with precious metal and stones. The contest is also judged on a broad spectrum of criteria. Aesthetics are important, of course, but other considerations are equally weighted, from innovation to functionality. “There were 500 entries the year I won that first place award,” Lisa told me. “The

day I won the Spectrum competition was like the pinnacle of my career. I never took a design course. I wouldn’t even know how you’d teach such a course. It’s just something you learn, like cooking. You sculpt in wax, and you have to take measurements meticulously. That design, and most of my designs, came from my love of nature, from travel, and from my love of art. Just seeing a beautiful tree can give me an idea for a design. Colors inspire. I see orange next to hot pink somewhere, and I think, ‘that’s amazing. Maybe I could do a ring like that.’” There was another element to Lisa’s story, however, one I was reluctant to bring up with her. She has cancer. She has been fighting it for more than five years. “Officially,” she told me, “that makes me a survivor, but I’m still sick.” Lisa Nolta is one of the most modest and self-effacing people I’ve ever interviewed, and she apologized to me several times during the course of our talks. During the second session, it was clear she wasn’t feeling very well. “I had a bad day yesterday,” she told me, but not out of self-pity. It was yet another of her attempts to apologize for herself, to explain why she might have forgotten to tell me something. “I went through a holistic cleansing,” she said. “With that treatment, they hope they might halt the cancer.” And then I was the one to apologize, for bringing it up. “It’s part of my story, I guess. I just don’t want to go on and on about it. I don’t want people to think I’m dying. Yes, I have cancer, and I know they’ve chalked me up as a survivor because I’ve passed five years since I was first diagnosed. I’m still fighting the battle, and it keeps getting worse. But my friends are so wonderful. I’m so blessed to have such good friends. When I was little, my grandmother told me ‘If you can count five best friends at the end of your life, you’ve had a rich life.’ I’ve never forgotten that. I have more than five friends, some of whom have been with me since I was young. They’re all so supportive. ‘What can I do?’ they ask. ‘What can I bring you?’ ‘I want to come visit.’” But there were other reasons why she was willing to talk about her battle with cancer. “I hear from doctors, nurses, family and friends all the time about how I inspire them with the way I deal with it. So maybe my story can inspire others who are sick. And, with the support of my family and my friends, I’m coming through it. I’m still here.” I could tell that she was tiring, and I wanted a little time to assimilate all she’d told me. When I later called her to read what I’d written, she started to cry, lavishing compliments on me for what I’d written until I was on the brink of crying myself. Finally, I said, “Lisa, I’m not trying to be modest, but all I did was take the gems you gave me and then try not to get in the way of the shine.”

JULIA LYNN

Julia Lynn lived in many different cities before she began to call Chico her home. Growing up, her family worked in the airline industry, which made it possible for her to see much of the United States as a young child. But now, comfortably calling herself a Chico local, Julia uses her watercolor artwork to express the beauty and charm of the city we all love. “Chico is such a friendly place. It’s groovy, it’s country-it’s hard to imagine those things going together but they do really well. It’s a good mix,” says Julia. Drawing inspiration from Bidwell Park and its natural beauty, Julia is putting together an exciting series called “Down By The River”— colorful illustrations of scenes from Butte Creek and Upper Park. “Bidwell Park is blessing for me. I Absolutely love it,” says Julia. The scenes are a vibrant reminder of the subtleties that make Chico so special, reminding us of the beauty in the place we call home.

home, I can paint at the park, it’s not a huge set up where I have to have studio space and it’s non-toxic so I don’t have to deal with cleaning fluids like turpentine.

Was there a specific moment you can remember that you wanted to be a professional artist? It became more concrete when I was in high school. I was literally taking two to three art classes at a time. My art teacher took me under her wing, coached me and introduced me to a lot of different techniques and mediums. One day she suggested that I should do art therapy as a career. After she explained what it was to me, I knew I wanted to combine art with helping people. I got my Bachelor degree in art and psychology then returned to school a few years later and double majored with art therapy and marriage counseling for my Master degree.

What are three words that express your artwork? Animated, illuminated, and whimsical.

When did you first begin making art a part of your life? As a child, I wanted to be an artist. When I was a little girl I started out coloring horses and

Why is watercolor your favorite medium? The purity of color. It’s transparent and that’s what makes it so illuminated. I love it because I can go anywhere and paint. I can paint at

What are you trying to give the world with your artwork? I’m trying to give the world a piece of myself. I’m trying to evoke an experience, whether it is spiritual or just from pure beauty. I would like to inspire people with my artwork. Do you have any advice for young and aspiring artists? If you love it, always make sure to make a place for it in your life—even if it’s not what you’re doing for a living. Experiment. Try different mediums, techniques and instructors. Everyone has something different to offer. Don’t let anyone tell you that it isn’t important because it is.

INTERVIEW BY ALYSSA WORLEY PHOTOS COURTESY OF CHASE LUNGREN

CHASE LUNDGREN

With parents in the timber contracting and forest service, Chase Lundgren spent most of his life growing up in California and the Pacific Northwest and moving around a lot gave him the outlook that “Life has always felt like an adventure. New places, new people, new things to explore.” Living in mostly rural areas, he admits “I’m definitely a country boy, however I clean up well, so you can take me anywhere.” As a talented muralist, he expresses himself in a grand way and continues to learn and grow. “I’m a perpetual student and CSUC is my most recent place of study. In an effort to keep my art as pure as possible, I chose philosophy and languages as majors, rather than art.” As How did painting murals come to be your line of work? I’ve been creating, and selling, canvas works since high school. I’ve always been very drawn to, and comfortable with, large scale drawing and painting. I worked on several small theater sets growing up and knew eventually I’d work in the film and theater industry. That dream has been steadily coming to life. As far as murals go, I was asked to create one for a very nice restaurant in Bend, Oregon, then another for a private Chico residence just based off my previous canvas work they’d seen. CONNECT

How do you begin a piece? I interview my clients to get a reasonable understanding of them and what they are drawn to, and how they feel about their space and life in general. I like to find out what they love and what means the most to them, and of course what their ideas are for the space. It’s part of my job to get enough of an understanding of my client that I can create a piece that they’d have fallen in love with had they walked into a gallery and seen it. Do you listen to music while you work? I always have music playing. I pick a style of music that seems complimentary and inspirational to the current project. Sometimes it’s electronic music, sometimes country, classical or indie. I particularly love vocals and I listen to music in several different languages. All art forms seem to bridge culture gaps quite well, and music is like a painting in sounds and tones. I like to stir emotion with each art piece I create. Music absolutely adds to that. What types of murals have you done and for what kind of client? I’ve had the honor of working with a few of the nation’s foremost designers and architects, and contributed to some of the finest residences

Chase Lundgren Fine Art | (808) 631-9042 | www.facebook.com/chaselundgrenfinearts

and significant architecture of our time. I create site-specific art, paintings on museum board, a full range of interior finishes and architectural detailing, as well as handling elaborate restoration work. Where do you find inspiration? I definitely find inspiration in nature. I like sharp contrasts and strong sunlight. I’ll say I feel like I channel much of my work divinely. Life itself is a spiritual experience and artists tend to know this well. Anything else you think the community would like to know about your work? There’s a misconception that I only work with large budgets. First of all, I paint for the love of it, and for the love of sharing it, and money is not my primary goal. I’d happily create for anyone who appreciates my art. Also, projects can be quite affordable as there is a great deal of flexibility in size, composition and complexity of the project. I’m as happy painting a few simple decorative touches for someone as I am painting a large theater set. My art is for everyone. It comes from that part of us we all share.

Tiligers! The Barry Kirshner Wildlife Sanctuary and Education Center is happy to welcome two new baby girls to our family, one tiger and one tiliger. A tiliger is 3/4 tiger and 1/4 lion. Tiligers are a man-made breed and there are only five in the world. A tiliger has a liger mother and a tiger father and since there are so few in the world, there is very little currently known about them. These two little girls were born two weeks apart and are here to gather information for other facilities on animal behavior, nutrition, and soundness of mind and body--their temperaments and how they work. The research we collect will be invaluable to other facilities. Our research will help to answer the numerous questions brought up by the tiliger’s existence. Will the tiliger’s existence help the small gene pool of tigers or not? Being that the liger has no growth inhibitor, will tiligers have one or will they continue to grow? Will they chuff like a tiger or roar like a lion? The foundation is very happy to have these two little girls and help in answering the numerous questions about this new species. Come out and visit our adorable new residents!
