FROM THE EDITOR Be good. These two words spoken by every parent in the history of the world are the trifecta of direction, demand and threat. And they are words to live by.

As kids, we are constantly reminded to be good by teachers, parents, movies, books, songs and tattletale friends. As we grow older, we get caught up in the other demands of life: be financially

stable, be polite, be responsible, be successful, be on time. We become too busy to remember to simply be good.
Briana Lindstrom EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
I used to teach preschool and every single day I saw kids being accidentally, genuinely good. Two, three and four year olds encouraged me to have faith in people and to be gentle and accepting towards others in my life. About ten years ago, I was teaching in Arizona and going through a tough, sad time. I showed up for work one day holding back tears and lacking the energy I usually had as I led circle time, arts and crafts and ABCs. All day long, my kids were so unusually good. I didn’t

life where I felt extremely loved and special. For the fourth year in a row, we were able to give some of that care and pampering to several people who have been struggling to get back on track to health and happiness in their own lives with our New Year, New You makeovers. These women have conquered obstacles and overcome circumstances most of us would be terrified by, and as a boost to bring them into beautiful new versions of themselves, local shops and salons have united to complete their transformations inside and out. Working on this project was a beautiful reminder of how important it is to be good to one another. When it comes to New Year’s resolutions this

There Arose Such a Clatter Ever noticed how Santa kind of looks like he would be a biker? Well it turns out he is! On December 6, Santa and a bunch of his not-so-tiny elves left the reindeer at home and rumbled down the streets on beautiful beastly motorcycles adorned with Christmas garland and strapped with toys. The 27th Annual TJ Memorial Motorcycle Toy Run brought donated toys up to Calvary Chapel in Paradise where they would be given away to brighten the holidays of disadvantaged kids in Butte County.

HAVE YOU LISTENED LATELY?
has an honest voice that doesn’t try too hard. I have an affinity for that kind of singer.” She mentioned her fondness for the singing and the songs of Justin Townes Earle, and I shared the fact that I’d once hung out with Justin’s father on a cruise ship four or five years ago. The exchange had stopped being an interview. It had become a chat, the best kind of interviews. “I really like a band called Shovels and Rope,” she continued, “a husband and wife duo. They’re really cool. Oh, and I just love Greg Brown. He’s such an intimate storyteller.” It was apparent that I was talking to a woman whose love of music was, if anything, even greater than my own. “I’ve really come to a new appreciation of Linda Ronstadt,” Jessie told me. “Her voice has such strength, and yet such vulnerability. The same is true of Carole King. I seem to appreciate her more with each year older
I get. I love her song writing, but I love the singing, too. Her voice isn’t at all contrived.” Though Jessie Bridges lives in Oakland now, her performance in Chico will mark her first visit here. I did a little PR for the city, telling her what a neat place it is, and hoping she would have the chance to visit Bidwell Park. “There won’t be much time on this trip,” she said, “but my boyfriend and I are planning a trip when we get a chance.” I wondered if there were any current musicians she’d be interested in dissing. “It’s really a good question,” she said. “I actually think about it all the time. I still listen to the radio. Real radio. Not Sirius. And I pay attention to what makes me change stations. It’s almost anything that’s on Top 40 radio now. There’s all this power to produce these intricate tracks where there are so many things going on, but all that electronic
gimmickry takes away from the inherent value of a song. For example, I’m not necessarily a Katy Perry or Lady Gaga person, but I can appreciate what they do. There’s a difference between liking something and appreciating it.” Were there themes in her own songwriting she found herself returning to over and over? “I’ve been writing songs since I was 16, and I’m now 31, so that’s about half my life. There’s a consistent love theme,” she said. “No surprise there. I write about the unknown. And being confused about life. That’s another theme. I really love telling stories in my songs, and writing them so a person not only imagines what I’m saying, but can be there as I sing it. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to like myself more. I think that’s just kind of natural. But in liking myself more, I’ve been able to better accept the things that challenged me growing up. I like sharing that. It makes me
15
feel more hopeful about my future.” Were there, I asked, special challenges in opening for her dad? “Oh God, of course there are,” she said. “The most challenging thing is the fear that people will have an expectation of me, or of who I am. I don’t get to come from an anonymous place. People are going to think they know what to expect from the Dude’s daughter. All I can do is hope my authenticity or my vulnerability will come across. But it’s been very satisfying when people come up to me after a concert and tell me they had no idea that Jeff Bridges’ daughter was going to open for him, and they wanted me to know they appreciated how open I’d been with the audience on stage. I’m not going to listen to the voices in my head that encourage me to
doubt myself after being rewarded by people who compliment me on being who I am.” Jessie’s new album, her second, is called Let It Breathe, and one of the songs in that collection is “Naturally Cool,” a guileless and pretty tune expressive of the kind of insecurity so many young people try to keep hidden. By this point in the interview, I, too, had come to like her for who she was, a little diffident, but vital, and full of energy, though she was suffering from a cold. Will she be performing solo at the Laxson show? “My buddy, Tim Marcus, will be accompanying me on pedal steel, and electric guitar. It’s really cool playing as a duo. It’s exposed, and a little raw.” And would she be returning to join her dad
later in the show during his set? “I’m not going to tell,” she said, the only time she was coy during our entire talk. I told her how much, and how surprisingly, she looked like her father in the pictures of her I’d seen. “How you can look like your dad and still be so pretty is kind of a marvel,” I told her, and then added “though he was kind of pretty in The Last Picture Show. “Well,” she said, “he was 21 when he made that movie, so the resemblance may have been a little more obvious then.” A naturally cool answer, I thought, one worthy of the Dude himself.

COOL KID C a it lin B u yer t Every new year brings new goals, new resolutions, and new dreams. My new year’s resolution this year is to help give back to the world and spread joy, whether it’s making somebody’s day or helping contribute to the community. I was inspired by my wonderful friend Caitlin Buyert. I have known Caitlin for many years, and have seen the dedication she has towards giving back to so many people. One tradition Caitlin has is to travel with her family to Mexico to deliver presents to children. Each year at Caitlin’s church, people donate gifts to boys and girls in Ensenada, Mexico. The donations are a variety of items such as books, toothbrushes, tiny games and clothes since the ages of the kids span from toddlers to teenagers. Once they collect all the gifts, Caitlin and members of her church organize them into what they call “shoeboxes.” The next step is to travel to Mexico! Caitlin and her family drive to Ensenada, Mexico where they finish the last step of preparation: wrapping. Caitlin described their method to wrapping the gifts, and how each age and gender have a specific wrapping paper so they know which presents to give to each child. She smiled when she described the happiness this experience gives her. “My favorite part is giving them the presents and seeing their reactions and how happy they are.” Caitlin said she feels as much joy

giving gifts as the children do when they receive the “shoeboxes.” Since Caitlin and her family have gone to the same church in Mexico for almost nine years, the whole town of Ensenada is always overjoyed when they arrive. After they have handed out presents to each child at the church (which is nearly 200 kids!), Caitlin told me that if they have any left over presents, she hands them out to kids on the streets of Ensenada. She said this experience is wonderful because these children don’t expect anything, so they are truly surprised when they are given the gifts. Caitlin concludes that her travels to Mexico have influenced her life. “This event is inspirational because it really opens your eyes. It makes me see how other people live and I am reminded how thankful I am for my life.” Besides traveling to Mexico each year, she has also gone to the Arizona Navajo reservation to do volunteer work. Her dreams for the future are to travel to Africa and Cambodia to help others there. Caitlin is only 16 years old and she has already impacted so many children’s lives. She works hard to make their dreams a reality. She is an inspiring, motivating and generous person and I know she will continue to make a positive impact on others around the world. Q: I have been hearing a lot about skin peels lately. What are they and how can they benefit my skin? A: There are a lot of different kinds of skin peels. From very mild to very strong. Over the counter peels are safe to use on most skin types, but if you are looking for a more noticeable difference you should see an esthetician for a lactic or glycolic peel which don’t require any down time. Then you can work up to seeing a dermatologist or esthetic nurse for the strongest methods which normally require some down time.
Q: My blonde highlights are starting to look brassy, what can I do to bring back my color? A: If your hair star ts to have a brassy or ashy tone to it after a few weeks, you could use a violet shampoo to take out yellow tones or a gold based rinse to bring back the warmth. WHITNEY “I’ve struggled with my weight my whole life and at the end of high school and beginning of college I finally loved how I looked. The problem was I didn’t eat nearly enough and what I did eat wasn’t always healthy, and I exercised so heavily that I was starving my body. I met someone, fell in love, and got caught up in the whirlwind of a new relationship. I started adopting bad eating habits and skipping workouts. Three years later when that relationship ended in a broken engagement, I was heartbroken, alone in a new city, and 35 pounds heavier. Over the next two years, my habits only got worse and my workouts became practically non-existent. I found myself 70 pounds overweight and defeated. I got to the point where I didn’t even recognize the girl in the mirror anymore.” Finally after seeing Take Shape for Life work for women around
her, Whitney got in touch with Amy Lacey. “When we first sat down, Amy told me that people who stick faithfully to the program develop optimal health--healthy body, healthy mind, healthy finances and lose an average of 2-5 pounds the first two weeks and 1-2 pounds every week thereafter. I knew I could stick to the program and I felt empowered to hit my goals – and I did!” Amy continued helping Whitney set realistic goals and reach them. “Having Amy as my coach pushed me to set better goals and dream bigger than I had in years.” “I’ve lost 75 pounds in a little over six months, 40 in the first three months and 35 in the second three months.” Her parents saw her success and joined Take Shape for Life as well and as a family they have lost a combined 200 pounds and have gotten off all their meds! “I feel like a stronger version of my ‘old self.’ I was lost for a few years and now when I look in the mirror or around at my life, this is the life I always imagined myself living. That detour I was on for a few years only makes me more thankful for Amy, the Take Shape for Life program, and the people who have unconditionally supported me along the way. I’m not afraid to share my story because I know that if it encourages someone, that makes it all worth it in the end.”

LORRIE & TYLER
Lorrie and her son Tyler started Take Shape for Life together after Lorrie saw her friend who was losing a lot of weight with the program and together, they’ve lost a combined 150 pounds! Lorrie’s health was waning due to an injury. She was receiving pain injections, taking pain medication and doing very little physical activity. “It was all very depressing. I ended up with A Fib. My heart was irregular and I went on high blood pressure meds and a blood thinner. I had a surgical procedure to shock my heart and I realized I was going nowhere fast.” Tyler began working Take Shape for Life to get healthy alongside his mom. “I wanted to lose weight because I was very unhealthy and it was hurting my back and knees. I was 352 pounds when I started. So far, I’ve lost 90 pounds!” The convenience of being able to take the

pre-planned meals wherever his day may lead him, along with relying on the support of a coach were what really worked for Tyler. “I feel good and look good as well. I have more self confidence and my knees and back benefit greatly. It opened a door that allows me to help other people in their weight loss.” With Amy Lacey as a coach, Lorrie was able to jump-start her journey back to health. “Having a health coach was like having a support system, a voice of encouragement. I have lost 75 lbs!” Lorrie’s Doctor, Eugene Moffett took her off all her pain and heart meds. “I’m walking constantly, moving always, and overall a much healthier person. My self-esteem has returned and I’m back to clothes shopping! I would advise everyone who isn’t happy with their energy level or their weight to just try this program.”

“I am a triathlete and cyclist so weight isn’t usually an issue – but I was in a motorcycle accident in April of 2014 and could not work out. The pounds packed on until I was 30 plus over anything I would typically find as acceptable for me,” says Jay. Jay’s coach, Dana Grant is a client of Jay’s, so it was a perfect partnership. “We have known each other for years. I’m just a ‘tell me what to do and leave me alone’ kind of guy! I know it’s different for lots of people, but the main thing is you have to be committed to it. You can’t cheat and lose the weight. I like the bars and shakes. Being busy at work (I’m a hairdresser), these are easy to pack and eat while I’m on the go. For lean and green...asparagus saved my life! Grilled on the BBQ--excellent! We splurge on dessert for the final meal of the day. The two biggest things are consistency in the times you eat and DRINK A LOT OF WATER!” Since starting Take Shape for Life, Jay has lost 30 pounds. As a pillar of support, and participant in the program herself, Jay’s fiancée Jennifer was there for every step of the way. “It helps to have the support of your significant other. I don’t think I could have done it with my fiancée Jen doing it with me! If she had been eating cookies and Ho-Hos while I was doing this, I don’t think I could have done it. Having a partner helps tremendously.” Now back at his healthy weight, Jay has a new lease on life. “Everything is easier to do – especially exercise. I ran Run for Food and ran it faster than I had the last two years. I know for certain that I could not have done this at 216 lbs!”

MARY
Mary went from a size 14 to a size 5 and although she started as a skeptic, she openly admits, “I believe in this program.” Christine Corpus, Director of Operations of Willows Firstcare, Inc where Mary works had Dana Grant and Take Shape for Life come in and introduce the staff to the program so they could recommend it to patients. “I was skeptical at first,” says Mary, “I don’t usually like to promote something I don’t believe in. I knew I couldn’t promote it if I wasn’t involved in the program, so they sponsored me for the first month and I lost 20 pounds!” Thankful for being sponsored, and truly wanting the program to work, Mary was careful to follow the program exactly as directed. “Jessie Corpus, PA-C says it is like a cake recipe--you have the ingredients, you have the directions, and if you follow them
Dana Grant, Health Coach In my late twenties I began to suffer from increasingly painful and prolonged migraines. Very quickly they become so severe as to overwhelm my life. I went from an active and successful professional and personal life to being completely debilitated. Twenty six years of my life was consumed by this condition. I decided to stop seeking a cure through traditional western medicine and begin a spiritual journey that would not only include healing my spirit, but healing my body through diet and nutrition.
perfectly, you come out with a perfect cake. If you only follow some directions, or leave an ingredient out, you’ll end up with different results.” Following these careful, but very doable instructions, Mary has lost 45 pounds since mid-July. Having a coach is what really made it stick for Mary. “When Dana came into my life I knew the Lord made it possible for me to meet her--even though I didn’t know I needed it. I love having Dana there when I need a little encouragement. She always knows what to say. I text her, message her, talk to her on the phone, we visit in person weekly, she always has new recipes and helpful advice. She is a beautiful person and a blessing.” After dropping 9 sizes, Mary feels more active and more willing to participate in things she’s invited to. “I’m more confident, have more energy, and feel like I’m more approachable and more willing to approach others.” Her family saw her success and soon followed suit. “At first my husband said ‘That’s your thing,’ but he needed a healthier lifestyle and after the second month, we had our open house at work and he heard the Take Shape for Life presentation and said ‘I’m ready.’ He lost 16 pounds the first month and he is doing great with his own customized plan. My youngest son who is 21 will be starting the program in January, and my older son who is 26 is a great support, so the whole family is involved and we are learning a lot.” Seeing her own success lets her feel justified in promoting Take Shape for Life. “If you want to lose weight, speak with a Take Shape for Life coach. You are worth it, so be good to yourself. It has changed my life and the life of my family. And now that I’ve lost so many inches, I need a whole new wardrobe! It is so much fun shopping a little at a time now that I’m feeling more confident.”

The holidays are over. You’ve given it your all; now it ’s time to give to yourself! Winter cold, more hours indoors, stress, and post-holiday blues can all contribute to dull, dr y, or broken- out skin. Technology has come a long way in the skin care field, and there are so many ways now to refresh, rejuvenate, and improve the skin’s appearance. Laser treatments can build collagen, resur face rough texture, repair sun damage, and remove unwanted hair. There are radio -frequency treatments to contour the face and body by releasing fluids from fat cells and tightening the skin. Microdermabrasion can improve the skin’s tone and texture by sloughing of f old, dead cells, and chemical peels can get deep into the skin and remove the uppermost layers, revealing the sof ter, younger skin underneath. Massage can relax, de-stress, and release toxins, improving circulation and overall well-being. Botox can relax those “ frown lines”, and dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Voluma can add volume to deep lines and wrinkles, and re- contour the cheekbones and lower face. We also carr y a variety of skin care products to cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize, and protect your skin. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that gives you a healthy glow. Retinol (or Tretinoin) products expedite cell turnover to refresh and smooth the skin. At the Derm B ar Med-Spa, we carr y only medical- grade products such as Obagi, Dermalogica, and Skin Medica. We do free consultations, and would be hap py to recommend a plan to give you the best skin for 2015 and beyond!

Megan Freeman AT THE SPA BY AVEED KHAKI / PHOTO BY STEPHANIE LAPP
Born in San Jose, California, Megan Freeman moved to Chico with her family when she was four years old. A graduate of Shasta Elementary School, Bidwell Junior High, and Chico Senior High School, Megan found her start in the beauty industry early on in high school by extending her love of makeup artistry into providing the service to her friends. She joined the College Connection program offered by Butte College while in high school and discovered her love for the fields of child development and cosmetology. When graduation drew nearer though, her interest in the two paled in comparison to her original love for the beauty industry. Independent in nature from an early age, Megan struck out on her own when she was eighteen to make her dream of finding success in the beauty field a reality. She traveled to-andfrom Roseville weekly and completed an intensive course in makeup artistry, earning her certification as a trained makeup artist. Though she loved the field, she knew it would not suffice in building
the career she hoped for. In 2013, at the age of nineteen, she decided to build upon her experience as a makeup artist and began studying for her esthetician’s license at Chico Beauty College. It was here that she met friend and coworker Angie Wisdom, who took her under her wing and eventually introduced her to Randy and Sherry Landis who were in the process of opening The Spa in Chico’s Philadelphia Square. Megan received her esthetician’s license in March of 2013 and was hired at the spa a few short months later. The youngest of the women at The Spa, Megan brings an approach to makeup artistry that is custom-tailored to her generation, and a short conversation with her quickly draws up her excitement for it. It’s no surprise that each generation has its own way of doing makeup that sets it apart from the generation before it, and Megan’s position at The Spa further solidifies their mission to provide an uplifting and welcoming atmosphere to women of all ages. Whether with her use of Youngblood Cosmetics, The Spa’s makeup line of choice, or her esthetician services, Megan continues to provide the same level of detailed service that women have
become so accustomed to at The Spa. The family, as she refers to her co-workers, have been so kind as to provide her with the knowledge that comes from their considerable number of years in the beauty industry and she looks forward to passing that knowledge on to her clients. Megan is a shining example of what it means to follow one’s dreams and, at such a young age, she is quickly proving that with hard work and determination nothing is out of reach. She hopes to be a role model for young girls someday and encourages all women to do what makes them feel happiest. From the smile that can’t help but remain on her face, it’s crystal clear that she has followed her own advice. She walks through The Spa with a certain level of confidence that comes only from self-achievement and speaks excitedly about all the goals she plans on accomplishing in the near future. With her tenacity, we can’t help but believe she’ll do just that. Megan is available for appointments during the week at The Spa in Chico. Call (530) 342-4SPA (4772) or visit them at 80 Declaration Drive Suite 102 to make an appointment today!

Highlighted Skin Play up your natural features by adding some shimmer! Highlighting pens and creams will subtly catch the light and give you a youthful, dewy glow. Emphasize areas that the sun naturally hits, such as the center of your forehead, nose, and cheekbones. Banish tired-looking eyes by adding a touch of shimmer to the inner corners of your eyes.
Brightly Colored Eye Shadows Draw some attention to those beautiful peepers with a bright pop of color. It’s time to step out of your normal makeup routine and try something bold and different for spring. Go with a softer color for daytime, then turn up the volume for the evening with a louder hue. Try a bright turquoise, royal blue, or purple and get ready to turn heads!
MAKEUP refresher
The new year is the perfect time to try out
a new look, and makeup is a fun, easy way to achieve one! Reveal a whole new you with
these makeup trends for 2015.
BY ERIN WENHAM / PHOTOS BY MICHELLE CAMY
Metallic Shimmer Copper, silver, and gold, oh my! It may still be cold outside, but it doesn’t have to show on your face. Give yourself a warm and shimmery glow with some metallic accents. Metallic eye shadows will give your eyes a nice pop and sparkle without looking overdone. Try a bit of bronzer to highlight your cheekbones for a radiant, sun kissed look.
Bright Red Lips Don’t let your eyes get all the glory! Bold, red lips are a timeless classic that are more ubiquitous than ever. Finding your perfect shade can be tricky. If you have fair skin, stick with a true red. Pinkish or orange-y reds are ideal for medium skin. Those with darker complexions look best with hues of purple and wine-colored reds. Downplay your makeup on the rest of your face to avoid that dreaded “clown” look and let your lips really make a statement.

Less is More If heavy makeup just isn’t your jam, then you’re in luck. This season get ready to see just as many bare faces as made-up ones. Let your natural beauty shine through and go for a soft, fresh look. Try a tinted moisturizer or mix a bit of your moisturizer with your foundation for a lighter look. Use a cream bluxqsh or bronzer for a more dewy cheek. Keep it light on the eyes with just a touch of mascara, and finish off the look with a nude or peachy lipgloss.

We Built This City THE SENATOR
As the Bay Area thrash metal act, Exodus, conclude their set, the band walks out of the huge loading doors into the cold December night. Inside, the temperature feels like a humid summer evening and the high vaulted walls of the theatre ricochet with the screams coming from the troop of devoted fans. Bringing up a conversation about Chico and not mentioning The Senator Theatre would prove to be quite difficult. Even before I became a Chico resident The Senator was a huge part of my life. My friends and I would pile up in a sweaty car and commute down to see our favorite bands play a show. Surprisingly, the building wasn’t always a venue for popular touring musicians. Designed by Timothy Pflueger who designed many of the art deco buildings in San Francisco and over a dozen theatres including Oakland’s famous Fox and Paramount theatres, The Senator first opened its doors in April of 1928. Since that inaugural year, the art deco landmark has gone through quite a transformation. The theatre acted both as a venue for traveling shows and movie house for decades well into the late seventies. It was bought by United Artist (now known as United Artist Media Group) in 1979 and promptly partitioned the building into a multi room movie complex. The company boarded off most of the building’s spaces and used them for storage, and left the tower unattended to, its wood slowly rotting and turning the tower into a hazard rather than a preserved piece of history. The tower was taken down in the late 1990s when it began to lean towards City Hall. United Artist managed the building until 2000, when finally, they decided to close because it wasn’t up-to-par with modern theatre complexes. The crumbling landmark was in dire need of maintenance and restoration. Eric Hart, a Chico native, architect and housing developer, bought the building from United Artist and soon afterward worked out a deal to rent it out to the City of Chico, DNA (promoter of local performing arts) and The Right Now Foundation. The group began to restore the historical landmark to what it used to be—a renowned performing arts center. The community backed Hart and his associates every step of the way and the public wanted to see the restoration successfully carried out to the local monument. The Senator tower, located on Main and Fifth Streets, was restored in 2003. Hart took it upon himself to get the city’s help and craftily reconstruct the iconic tower. Local restoration artist, William Ward rebuilt the tower to make it last. He stuck to the original design, but fabricated the tower out of carbon, fiberglass and steel. Eric Hart found the gold mirrored glass left over from MGM Grand in Las Vegas and used it for the iconic diamond placed on top of the tower; and so the Senator tower was re-erected. In July of 2004, the bright lights of The Senator Theatre were turned on and the marquee soon filled with the names of the nation’s leading touring acts—something that has stayed the same throughout the decade. The hard work was a community effort, which is exactly what it took to return the landmark to the greatness of what it once was. BY MATTHEW MANFREDI / PHOTO BY CLARK MILLER

Handle With Care
BY BRIANA LINDSTROM / PHOTO BY FRANK REBELO
Life happens. You’re in the middle of your busiest week at work while preparing your home for a family visit and all of a sudden your plumbing goes awry. Excited to be living in a newly purchased home, you volunteer to help on the Homeowners’ Association and soon realize you’re way in over your head. As an investment, you’ve decided to buy a rental house, only to find out your residents can’t pay rent and are suing you for code violations you never knew existed. After a tough divorce, you find yourself starting over in an apartment, searching for a new group of friends and a sense of community. It is comforting to know that however life happens, Hignell is there for you.
T
he Hignell Companies are dedicated to creating caring communities. It starts within their office building on Humboldt Road where each employee is valued, respected and genuinely cared about. It expands to a non-profit called Creating Caring Communities, started by The Hignell Companies to organize and host community events and social opportunities within apartment complexes. It further reaches out to each resident in a Hignell-managed property, whether privately owned, part of an HOA, or commercially purposed, Hignell takes great pride in managing with
reliable professionalism and care. If something needs attention in your home, whether it is a ceiling fan, garbage disposal, community grounds, or even a light bulb replacement, Hignell’s carefully selected and trained team of people are there to make your home a more beautiful, welcoming place to live, and they do it with a genuine “How are you?” And finally, Hignell’s caring community is one of trust and support with its property owners. Hignell manages each property with extreme professionalism, adherence to and knowledge of even the newest and most intricate laws and codes, and with an approach to maintenance done by licensed professionals as a form of preventing future costs. Hignell gives property owners the peace of mind that they’ll receive the best care and highest return on their investment without having to deal with the time-consuming issues that can come up for a landlord. “We manage single family homes, multi-family homes, commercial and Association properties. With 10 different contractor’s licenses, we are able to do it all--from building to cleaning and everything in between,” says Greg Wietbrock, Vice President of Property Management at The Hignell Companies. Along with the building, maintenance, accounting and resident placement, Hignell really prides itself in its dedication to being professional and kind. “One of our core values is unwavering integrity and our employees carry that out consistently.” Philip Larios, President and CEO of The Hignell Companies knows that it is important to keep all of his employees interested and updated in their fields of expertise. “Depth of knowledge is important to us. Our managers and employees are always training and constantly being educated.” With the confidence of knowing the ins and outs of the property management world, Hignell employees are able to take the extra step towards truly caring for their residents. “A lot of times apartments are filled with students who are away from home and lonely, divorced people, hurting
people--we want to add an element of care into their lives.” With high standards and more than 60 years in the business, it’s no wonder so many people are turning to The Hignell Companies to manage their property investments. With any other major investment in your life, you’d turn to a professional to help you keep the books up to date, make sure everything is legal, and to provide quality maintenance to your investment and service to your customers or clients. A property is no different. “We want to make sure our clients are using their money wisely. We make sure each property has curb appeal, qualified residents, and a quick turnover rate when the property becomes vacant,” says Phil. Hignell’s experience with property management also extends to helping HOA and Condominium boards to manage their properties. With full board advisory and accounting services, Hignell can help ensure that budgets are appropriate, dues are being paid, and money is being used efficiently for the better of all residents affected. With approximately 120 employees working under the same roof, it’s easy to get in touch with the person you need to talk to, and a great way to avoid communication mishaps or lack of accountability with The Hignell Companies. Whether you’re an owner or a resident, you’ll be able to find the help and care you need with just a simple phone call. We’ve all been there when life happens, and it is a valuable peace of mind to know The Hignell Companies will be right there to handle your needs with care. HOW TO KEEP YOUR COOL WHEN MARKETS BECOME JITTERY by Renée Michel, MBA and Joe Sweeney, CFP ® Financial Advisors at Asset Management Group Recent months have been rough for markets. After reaching new market highs in mid-September, financial markets gave into fears about global growth, Ebola, and falling oil prices. Though many analysts had been predicting a pullback, many investors feared that the sky was falling. These feelings are quite normal. Consider this: though the S&P 500 achieved a 9.2% annualized total return between 1994 and 2013, the average investor saw just a 2.5% return. Why? Largely because of panicked selling and emotional investing. Long-term investing requires discipline, focus, and a commitment to following a strategy. These 4 steps should help you keep your cool: STICK TO THE PLAN. If you understand the rationale behind your investment strategy and how it fits in with your overall objectives, you’re much less likely to give in to fear. Consciously remind yourself of your financial goals. If your goals haven’t changed, then a short-term shift in markets shouldn’t matter to you. UNDERSTAND YOUR ATTITUDE ABOUT RISK AND CALIBRATE IT OVER TIME. In general, the more financial return you pursue the more risk you have to be willing to take on. Market pullbacks offer an opportunity to test your comfort level with risk. If you can’t sleep at night for fear of what’s happening to your investments, it’s time to give us a call and talk about risk. TUNE OUT THE NOISE. If you turned on your television or
opened the paper right now, what would you see? Doom, gloom, and fear. Scary headlines bring in eyeballs and producers love to bring in pundits who are happy to predict the end of the world around every corner. Don’t listen to the hype. LISTEN TO PROFESSIONAL ADVICE. One of our most important jobs is guiding our clients through market declines and helping them stay focused on their goals and objectives. We use a highly disciplined approach to making investment decisions that prioritizes careful risk management and client capital preservation. Though we can’t predict market movements, we have learned how to manage money through them. If you’re worried about market jitters, give us a call at 530-342-2900. Source: Standard & Poor’s. House Call
January 2015: 30 Years and A Lot of Look! BY BRIANA LINDSTROM / PHOTOS BY ERIN WENHAM
The Couple
The Call
Todd and Adria met in southern California at a movie theatre. “I was the assistant manager and she was the candy-cashier girl,” Todd smiles. Thirty years later, they are happily living in Chico where Adria frequents the farmer’s markets and loves running into the old Chico people she has known since 1978 when she moved here for school. They bought their home in 1992 and raised three beautiful kids in it. As Todd explains the multiple accomplishments in sports, academics and personality each of his kids has achieved, it is easy to see that these proud parents were more concerned with being involved in their kids’ lives than with fixing up their kitchen. Now that their kids are older, they decided to finally give their home a little long-awaited attention.
The Call

UPGRADED LIVING | JANUARY 2015 | UPGRADEDLIVING.COM
Their original kitchen came with cabinets made of darkly stained cheap wood which Adria had spray-painted white immediately, but never felt like they were worthy of any extra work. The countertops were white tile with permanently dingy looking grout and the overall space in the cabinets was not maximized. A few of Adria’s colleagues at Neal Dow had used New Again Kitchen & Bath for their own homes, so Adria and Todd decided to check it out. “I met the couple in our showroom,” says Ric, “They came in on a Saturday and it was really busy so we set up an appointment to measure their kitchen. They are both teachers with busy schedules and had heard of nightmare scenarios of kitchen remodels that lasted forever.” “The other places we’d been had said they could get the job done in 4-6 weeks,” but who wants to have an out-of-commission kitchen for that long? New Again Kitchen & Bath did their measurements, chose cabinetry, granite, fixtures, tile and backsplash and based off the design, Ric said he thought they could finish the remodel in about a week. Not only did Ric help measure and move the job along, but he was a great sounding board for Todd and Adria’s ideas. “We are visual people so it is hard for us to imagine how something will look without actually seeing it. He helped us choose colors and design that would work. He listened to our ideas and helped piece them together into a complete picture that had a real custom feel. It was so nice.” “Ric also knew so many design aspects that we wouldn’t have even thought of... He told us we could lower the outlets, install a corner cabinet and have granite on the windowsill. He also talked us out of things when we were going overboard. I loved the way he said it, he would say, ‘Hmmm… That has a lot of look.’ He helped us keep it toned down and clean.
AFTER Bedrosian Tile Backsplash Ruby Silk Accent Border Sunway Maple Shaker Cabinets Butterfly Verde Granite Windowsill Butterfly Verde Granite Countertops
The Cure Todd and Adria knew the design elements that were important to them, and Ric was able to design something that fit their style and function around those particulars. They wanted to keep their timeless wood floors and the open layout of their kitchen. They also wanted to incorporate a large sink. “When our kids were babies, we lived on Arbutus and I would bathe them in our large kitchen sink. When we moved in here, we had the split sink and I always knew I wanted a large sink again,” says Adria. With Ric’s help, they chose Sunway Maple Shaker cabinets with a Honey Spice finish, granite countertops and windowsill in Butterfly Verde, and Bedrosian Roma (almond) porcelain tile for the backsplash with a Ruby Silk accent border. The whole job was finished in four days. “Four days!” Says Todd, “People don’t even believe it when we tell them.” A true testament to any business is repeat customers, and the couple has already begun the work with New Again Kitchen & Bath
for their bathroom. Overall, Ric really helped the couple figure out just what they wanted, choose elements that would blend into a beautiful balance, and even make sure the job was done on a short timeline. “He even helped us by telling us to go through our stuff and decide what we wanted to keep so we could have a new, clean feel,” says Adria. “He was responsive,” adds Todd. He was there to answer any questions and take any comments. I also liked Pro Tile and everyone who worked with New Again on installations. Everyone was very personable.” “He really was our guiding light,” says Adria. So, for their 30th anniversary, the couple has a new kitchen. Something they are happy to come home to, and a fresh, welcoming place for their children and grandchildren to appreciate for years to come.

Frames with glass removed

Acrylic Paint (or paint of your choosing)
Wood Glue
UPGRADED LIVING | JANUARY 2015 | UPGRADEDLIVING.COM
Is a frame still a frame if it’s not framing anything? The answer is yes! Frames can still make fantastic wall art even if you’ve run out of photos to put in them. Layering frames creates a one-of-a-kind piece with both a geometric and vintage flare. We found these wooden frames in various sizes and patterns at the Treasure Cove thrift store in Paradise, who had a very large selection. Used frames, especially those without glass, are generally very inexpensive and so easy to perk up. We chose to stick with a neutral color palette while adding some sparkle as well. A bit of sandpaper and some acrylic paint is all you need to give your frames an entirely new look. The best part of this project? The total cost was under $20! We adhered our frames together into a pattern we liked with our trusty wood glue, but small nails could be used as well. There you have it! A unbelievably inexpensive way to create an expensive looking piece of art for your home.

First start with having a single crimped pie crust chilled and waiting to be filled. Preheat oven to 400
INGREDIENTS: 2 ½ cups Pecans (whole) ½ cup Butter 4 Large Eggs 1 cup Organic Sugar ½ cup Packed plus 2 tbsps Brown Sugar ¼ tsp Salt
DIRECTIONS:
Melt butter and set aside. Crack eggs into medium bowl. Add sugar, brown sugar, salt. Whisk this by hand until well blended. Do not use an electric beater as this causes frothing. Now you may add your melted butter, whisking by hand again. Pour filling into crust. After a 5 minute pause you may add pecans. Roughly chop 1 cup pecans, creating a first layer. Add 1 1/2 cups of whole pecans, evenly dispersing over the top. Reduce oven to 350, bake for 1 hour. Check to see that pie has no jiggle and a slight toasting over top of nuts, bake in additional increments of 10 minutes if needed. This is one of my favorite pies, bless you in the making and may you enjoy the creation of pecan pie without using corn syrup.

AGE 29 NOMINATED BY NICOLE ROTH AT ENVEE SALON
I wanted to nominate Tiffany for Upgraded Living’s makeover after hearing about ever ything she had gone through this year. She was diagnosed with achalasia after not being able to keep any food down for months. Achalasia is a ner ve issue that prevents anything from getting into your stomach. She was born with it and symptoms had just star ted showing. She was having issues getting a proper specialist do her surger y due to this disorder being extremely rare. Meanwhile she was losing 10 pounds a week, going to the ER weekly for IV fluids all while taking care of her two children. She is now on the road to recover y but has additional health issues to recover from due to her near star vation and invasive surger y. She is a wonderful selfless full time mother and I don’t know anyone more deser ving of some pampering.
“My outlook on life has changed. Now I see every day as a gift. And I am so thankful for my husband who has been here for me through it all. We’ve been together for 14 years. He is my best friend.” - Tiffany
HAIR AND MAKEUP ENVEE SALON CLOTHIER MONTANA BLUES
SALON EXPERIENCE Nichole added some layers and cleaned up the ends of Tiffany’s hair. She darkened the roots with a rich color and added subtle golden balayage highlights that melted into the tips. Taylor gave her a blowout and added some soft curls to her long locks. Kisia gave Tiffany a smokey eye with shimmer y pink for a softer, romantic look. Cherstyn made her eyes really pop with lash extensions and Megan used gel polish to create a holiday manicure with different designs on each nail. Wardrobe Kathi dressed Tiffany for comfor t with a touch of glamour. Leggings with a peek-a-boo mesh stripe, a super-soft cami and sweater with a wide collar and fringe were flattering and luxurious. A long chain necklace was the perfect simple classy accessor y. 53
AGE 28 NOMINATED BY FRIEND, HEATHER JOHNSON
I want to nominate my friend Shea. She is a great person inside and out and really deser ves a makeover for the holidays. She works with children with autism, loves being crafty and is a great friend. She is always there to help out when needed, asking nothing
SALON EXPERIENCE Claudia star ted Shea out with a fresh cut which she called a “lob”- a long bob. “This is the best look for Shea’s length and hair texture,” explains Claudia. She kept the front long and cut nearly six inches off the back for a chic, modern style. Claudia used Schwarzkopf hair color to blend shades and create more enriched tones. Deep conditioning added shine. She then styled Shea’s hair with beachy waves and sideswept bangs. Ashleigh used Bodyography makeup to create a dewy glow for Shea. She evened out her skin tone and texture with primer and foundation, then used powder, bronzer and blush to contour, highlight and warm up the tone. Copper and gold tones with dark liner and individual lashes gave her eyes a bold look. A light, neutral gloss sealed the dewy look with a kiss! Wardrobe Monique styled Shea in a form-flattering tulip-back sweater with a black slip and cozy tights. As always, Monique was the exper t with layering accessories to play up the sparkle in Shea’s look. “I always like to mix sparkle, glam with some ear thy pieces, otherwise you’ll end up looking like a Christmas tree! Play around with different lengths of necklaces, adjust the lengths until you find the perfect mix.” The final fabulous look included six bracelets, a beautiful ring and four necklaces. Tulip-seamed black leather boots with a kitten heel were the perfect fit for Shea’s new look.
in return. She is so deser ving!
“I’ve been needing a fresh start and new perspective. I am ready to move forward with a few things in my life and some pampering and a new look will give me a boost.”- Shea

HAIR AND MAKEUP MY SALON CLOTHIER KATIE’S CORNER II
SALON EXPERIENCE Brittany used balayage technique to give Cr ystal some natural looking highlights with a honey blonde. She gave Cr ystal a trim, but left most of the length because Cr ystal wants to donate her hair to Locks of Love. Amber pampered Cr ystal with a Calm Skin facial using Eminence organic skin care, chamomile cleaner, a chamomile masque under steam and coconut moisturizer and recover y oil for a hydrating, soothing treatment. Lori gave a red, sparkly gel manicure, perfect for the holidays and Amanda gave Cr ystal a pedi to match. Ria used Eminence mineral powder bronzer to highlight Cr ystal’s cheekbones and used a touch of shimmer y gold on her eyelids to keep the makeup subtle and enhance Cr ystal’s natural beauty. WARDROBE Cr ystal’s full length embroidered, sequined red and black coat is the perfect match for her bold personality. Paired with soft black basics and a beaded red necklace, she looked festive and beautiful and she couldn’t stop smiling!
“I’m a little shy. When it comes to talking about things that are important, I get jittery. I’m hoping this makeover will give me some confidence. I volunteer and live at the Jesus Center and want to help people through their hard situations. Don’t give up. Don’t run away from your reality, become stronger because of it.” - Crystal
AGE 29 NOMINATED BY THE SABBATH HOUSE
Cr ystal was born deaf and she had an operation around the age of three which allowed her to star t hearing.
She had to go to speech
therapy for the next 12 years. She is currently attending Butte College and volunteering at the Jesus Center while she is not in class. It appears Cr ystal had made some poor choices in her past (I get the feeling no one ever taught her any difference), and she found herself in a bit of trouble. Since being at the Sabbath House we have discovered she is always willing to help out and it appears that she is tr ying hard at making the right choices now. My gut instinct tells me that Cr ystal has probably never been pampered in her life. She has a pleasant personality but people haven’t always been nice to her. I would like to nominate Cr ystal for a wonderful and great makeover.

Dance, Confidence & The Connection Between the Two By Luke Scherba Ever walk into a room, not know anyone and feel out of place? Have you ever noticed someone who does the opposite? Confidence is a great skill. A learned skill. As a dance instructor for many years, I have noticed a trend; when people lacking a bit of confidence learn dance for a season, it’s not long before their confidence level in life increases. Now I am not just talking about confidence in the particular activity of jitterbug, salsa, or waltz… no I am talking about a confidence in the way they walk, the way they carry themselves and interact with people. Ballroom teaches people a positive way to approach and interact with one another. Dancing provides a unique positive self awareness. As a dancer you are taught to hold your frame a particular way for a specific reason. You are taught to present yourself. You slowly become accustomed to people watching you do something you don’t do well… until one day you begin to actually do it well! When that day comes, a new level of self confidence arises with a feeling of accomplishment. It is a wonderful transformation to witness. I have seen some awkward people enter my studio and after a couple dozen lessons, leave with an extra sense of confidence in their walk... a pep in their step! They are no longer as worried about who is watching, or wondering if they fit in. After all, they can dance, can the person across the room do that?! So I encourage you to try it, get out and take a class. See for yourself! Luke Scherba Studio Owner www.StudioOneBallroom.com 530-520-9289
From Resolution to Reality 5 tips to help you stay on track in 2015 “Year’s end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us. Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.” - Oprah Winfrey
Choose the Right Resolution Ask yourself if this is something you really want to do, or feel obligated to do. Choose a goal based on what will make you feel genuinely fulfilled, not what you think others are expecting of you. You will feel much more accomplished if the goal truly relates to you.
Give Yourself a Timeline Make it realistic and put it on the calendar! Create a deadline and progress checkpoints along the way to keep yourself mvotivated. Map out exactly what you need to have accomplished at each checkpoint, and be sure not to rush yourself. Give yourself time to let your resolution become truly integrated into your life. This can make all the difference in making your goal a reality.
Be Aware of your Daily Habits Then change them! Tune in to the things you’re doing every day that could be preventing you from reaching your resolution. Schedule in good, healthy habits that will become your new norm. Lifestyle changes are not easy, but can be accomplished with a conscious effort to change and an awareness of current roadblocks.
Focus on the Positive Give yourself some credit for all of the good things you’re already doing! The new year is not the time to get down on yourself about the things you haven’t accomplished, but to appreciate how far you’ve already come and realize your potential.
Tell a Buddy If you’re not the best at holding yourself accountable, ask for help! Tell a friend or relative about your resolution and ask them to check on your progress regularly. You will take much greater ownership of your goal when you know that someone is following your journey. Better yet, team up with someone who has a similar goal for support and encouragement.

five years and worked on performances like the Nutcracker. Her current project, the infamous leather earrings are quirky and daring yet seem to merge with all styles and ages. UL: How did you develop your style? CF: It started just as a whim using leather to make my first earrings ten years ago. I was just making them for friends and it evolved. Then I star ted realizing how versatile leather is. How many colors there are and how easy it is to work with. Leather has always really worked with my aesthetic. Bright, bold and geometric. UL: Do you work outside of making jewelry? CF: Yes, I’m the librarian and hand-work teacher at Blue Oak Char ter School. I’m actually going to star t teaching sewing there too.
UL: Where is your favorite place to create? CF: My studio. Right now it’s a disaster but it’s really colorful. There’s a whole wall of fabric. I originally studied fashion design and was a seamstress. Over 15 years I’ve collected all these amazing ar t supplies. Different paints and ribbon and sequins. UL: What materials do you use? CF: Leather and some textiles. Vintage fabric. Guatemalan fabric. I just came across this scrap of fabric that I’ve had in my collection for 10 years in the bottom of a storage bin. It was a Mexican blanket. I’m positive I got it in a thrift store. When I first star ted jewelry, it was all recycled. That’s a fun thing too is finding vintage chains. It was really great when I lived in San Francisco. You could find actual treasures.
UL: What’s the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen? CF: My dog every day. She’s a mutt. Chihuahua and maybe a little bit of Dachshund. UL: Why do you love Chico? CF: I just feel so appreciative of our town and this community and how suppor tive people have been of my ar t and everybody’s ar t in town. I really suppor t the handmade locally made movement and also people who are able to recycle and repurpose. Claire’s jewelry is available at Three Sixty Ecotique, Mecca Salon, Boho and online. www.clairefong. etsy.com

Artist Profile: If you remotely consider yourself a fan of local music, you have, without a doubt, come in contact with Matt Loomis’ artwork. It doesn’t matter if I am walking through the doors of a venue or buying a record released by a local artist, Loomis’ artwork has followed my peers and myself around for the last decade. Popular Metal and Hardcore bands (not only from Chico but all over the U.S. and Canada) have used Loomis’ designs for t-shirts, album covers and merchandise. His name is a counterpart to the artistic side of the heavy music scene. However, violently themed album covers are something that Loomis doesn’t limit himself to; the influential range of his artwork is very extensive. Our afternoon interview had been pushed back by an hour because of an “art emergency” Loomis had to take care of with a touring band he works with from Canada called The Red Chord. They are using one of Matt’s designs overseas to print t-shirts and they promptly needed him to resend the file in a different format. As Matt files into the coffee shop for the post-emergency interview, he looks like it’s just another day on the job—which is exactly what it is.

UL: Growing up, was there ever a specific moment when you knew that ar t was going to be a huge par t of your life? ML: Well, I think I was nine years old when my dad bought me a copy of Thrasher Magazine because I was really getting into skateboarding. I saw ar twork by Jim Phillips and Pushead and it just blew me away. From that point on I began drawing all the time. If you look at some of my line work you can clearly see some Jim Phillips and Pushead. Those two still have big influence on me today. UL: Is there a cer tain process you follow when you begin to work on a piece? ML: No. Not really. For my ar twork, it’s really on a case-to-case basis. I can go through as many as 15 sketches before I really find something I like and be able match it up with client needs. I usually like to use a lot of pencil when I begin to working on ar t for myself, but when I work with other people, because the piece typically has to be printed and pencils don’t really print well, I’ll use ink to begin and tailor my line work from there. UL: Did you take anything away from your experience at Chico State? ML: Well, I was going to go to San Jose State originally, but it was just too expensive to live in the city. So, at the last moment I applied to Chico State in the fall of 1997 and, thankfully, they let me in. It was kind of hectic getting into classes late and looking for a place to live in such a shor t amount of time. I ended up getting kicked out of school with two semesters to go before I graduated. There was a lot of feuding going on between the art depar tment and me so it’s probably a rightfully fitting exit. I felt like the ar t program, when I was going there, was immediately looking down upon on things that were new and current. One of my professors asked me to bring in ar t that inspired me and I brought in works by Barry McGee and Banksy and he immediately looked at me and said, “This is what you’re into? These people are not going to anywhere in the ar t world”. Fast-forward fifteen years and those ar tists are now some of the biggest in the ar t world. Though, I really enjoyed meeting people and there were a lot of professors, including Sheri Simons and James Kuyper, who were exceedingly cool and helpful during my time at Chico State. UL: What are some of the things you like about Chico? ML: Well, I always loved the summer and early fall in Weaverville. Is just awesome. It’s so nice being outside during those months but once winter hits it’s one of the worst places to be. The Chico winters aren’t that bad. Living in Chico, I love to be able to hop on my bike and be in the middle-of-nowhere in fifteen minutes. If you want a look at vivid local ar t or an amazing cover for your band’s next LP, be sure to check out Matt Loomis at thehandofloom.tumblr.com and on Facebook.
