FROM THE EDITOR UPGRADED LIVING

What a month! I’m very pleased to be able to share this issue with all of you.

STAFF

This month we brought back our Café Crawl, first introduced back in 2012. The excitement is very real. To say we’re coffee lovers here at Upgraded Living would be a huge understatement. If you ever see an over-abundance of exclamation

through our community cycle shops to get the inside scoop on the best of the bike scene. In putting this issue together, there was one word that kept coming to mind: enthusiasm. Talking with the dedicated coffee crafters and avid bike devotees of our community, we got an overwhelming sense of the spirit and dedication that lives within our community. We loved seeing the faces of shop owners light up as they talked about the passion they were able to turn into a business. Of course we couldn’t make a May issue without giving some love to the mamas

As intimidating as that may be, I’m so glad that my daughter will get to grow up here, and hopefully enjoy all of the things that made me fall in love with Chico. As I’ve said before, and probably not for the last time, there is something here for everyone. I know that she’ll have the opportunity to explore whatever sparks her enthusiasm, and connect with others who share the same passion. I suppose that all we can really hope for—

relatively vague in forecasting exactly what Downtown Chico was to look like in 2030, the plan laid out a framework for how the city could operate over two decades to support the growth of Downtown Chico and assist in building a more vibrant Downtown community. By encouraging new investment, providing necessary adjustments for increased traffic and parking, and beautifying what has often been referred to as the Heart of Chico, the plan set guidelines and goals in place to make the dream of a better Downtown Chico a reality. Over the past few months alone, a number of these goals have come to fruition and it is, in no small part, due to the cooperation and partnership between a number of local organizations, the Chico City Council, and as both of the formerly mentioned were quick to point out, the overwhelming support of our local community. We feel that positive progress is always noteworthy, but significant progress is something worth singing about. This is our first in a three part series on Downtown Chico and its current direction. We hope it will help better define the vision for one of Chico’s most visited destinations, shed light on new and upcoming investment in Downtown Chico, and deconstruct the large cul-

bers in Chico banded together in a similar way looking for change in their downtown community over the past few years, and a number of community action groups were founded to create just that. The Chico Stewardship Network’s launch of Clean and Safe Chico has perhaps been the most visible of these action groups over the past two years. The group has generated a number of programs including the Downtown Ambassadors, Street Pastors, and the Generosity Campaign, each focused on supporting a specific element of creating a more welcoming downtown environment. The efforts of groups like these have had a significant impact on the downtown area and the positive effects of their work is clearly visible today.

NEW INVESTMENT A number of individuals have not only seen the vision for the future of Downtown Chico, but also invested heavily in having a hand to shape its progress. The most visible of these recent investments just completed construction at one of Downtown Chico’s anchor locations, the corner of Third Street and Broadway. Now home to the eagerly anticipated marriage of Burgers & Brew and Crepeville, the corner restaurant will soon breathe new life and increased foot traffic to the Broadway corridor between Third and Fourth street. The brainchild of restaurateur Philippe Massoud, the restaurant is the first phase of his larger project that will soon produce new office space, retail, and resi-

It has been this continued investment, and the investment of residents and visitors alike, that has brought Downtown Chico to where it is today, and we couldn’t be more excited to see where it will go from here.

A Great Place to Call Home!

Assisted Living — Transitioning to a “Safe Haven” By Shawn Weibel, Marketing Director

Since the end of September 2014, I have been fortunate to help place 33 wonderful seniors into an Assisted Living facility in Chico. I am grateful for this experience. The process typically begins with a phone call from a family member concerned with the safety and wellbeing of a loved one living at home. They may have fallen, or are not eating well. They may not be managing their medications properly, or need assistance with activities of daily living (ADL). If they have fallen, they may have gone to a hospital, and then to a skilled nursing facility (SNF) for rehab. In many cases they cannot return home after discharge, so Assisted Living is recommended. This can be an emotionally challenging and stressful situation for the family and their loved one. In many cases the family member is forced to make a decision

to transition their loved one into a care facility. Luckily, Chico has many quality Assisted Living facilities, dedicated to the excellent care and comfort of their residents. This helps make the inevitable a little easier. Once a facility is chosen, and the resident moves in, the adjustment process begins. I can only imagine what it must be like. They are now living with strangers, of all ages and walks of life. Caregivers they‘ve never met come into their room to check on them and give them their meds. They try to figure out what they should be doing each day. They sometimes look a little lost. As time goes by it becomes the new normal. They begin to build trusting relationships with their caregivers; they are more relaxed. They join in more conversations, and start making new friends. They go to exercise classes and activities, and spend more time out of their room. It is clear they are beginning to feel “at home.” One day one of our residents said, “Since I can’t be home, I’m glad I’m here.” I consider that the greatest compliment to our facility, our staff, and Assisted Living in Chico.

California Park Lake provides a beautiful backdrop to our facility. We are very fortunate to have this spectacular view right in our own backyard. Our residents enjoy sitting in our grand courtyard, g enjoying the lake view, along with the ducks, geese and an occasional kayak. Call and schedule a tour...we love to show off our facility.

“Just Pretend to Hear?”

Stay connected with the people in your life. Call 888-710-8419 for an appointment.

Be Part of "Mission: One Million" The World Health Organization recognizes hearing loss as a leading public health care concern. Untreated hearing loss has been linked to memory loss, lost revenue in the workforce, and failure to remain connected with family, friends, and social activities (a contributing factor to declining health). Hearing loss also affects friends, family, and coworkers as they make adjustments to compensate. Untreated hearing loss usually gets progressively worse, and the longer one waits to get hearing aids, the harder it is for your ears and brain to make the adjustment. In order to address this problem the American Hearing Aid Association initiated a nationwide program this spring: Mission: One Million. The goal is to provide 1 million FREE hearing screenings to individuals 55+ through local hearing specialists this year. Most adults wear eyeglasses to improve their vision, yet people often seem embarrassed to admit they have trouble hearing. Today’s hearing aids are immensely better, smaller, and more discreet than those of your grandparents. They are advanced digital devices that can be programmed specifically for your hearing needs. They are so comfortable you won't notice they are there, and neither will anyone else. May is Better Hearing Month, which means there is a lot of information online and in the media to help you learn more about hearing health. Be part of Mission: One Million. Schedule a free examination for yourself and suggest your family and friends have their hearing tested. Find a local participating hearing specialist at 888-710-8419. MONTHLY FITNESS

Squat Challenge

by Rapid Fuel Nutrition

PHOTOS FRANK REBELO

It’s time we get into summer body shape! This quick challenge will get your legs and backside burning, while keeping your heart rate up! We will have an easy-to-follow and simple set-up to tackle this workout. Each numbered workout will last 30 seconds, back-to-back, until we’ve gone through the list. Once you’ve completed one set, you’ll have earned a 30-second break, then move on to round two. We will run through this for a total of three rounds. This workout is no problem for a rockstar like you. Let’s get started in 3, 2, 1—let’s go!

1 Squat-Leap With feet shoulder-width apart, drop your hips down while keeping your knees within the same plane as your toes. Feel free to extend your arms in front of your body to help balance your center. From the depth of your squat, drive your legs, and push yourself into a vertical leap. Land softly and move directly into the squat movement. This should be smooth and continuous for the 30 seconds.

2 Squat-‘n’-Hold Find the depth of your squat and hold this position for the full 30 seconds. For extra credit, drop your upper legs past the point at which they become parallel with the floor.

3 Drop-Squats Starting with your feet together, quickly move both your feet to

34

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM APRIL 2015

shoulder width at the same time. This will give your body a swift moment of freefall into squat position. From squat, push yourself back up into starting position with your feet against each other. Ideally, you will have a bouncing-like rhythm to this workout for the 30 seconds.

4 Squat-’n’-Hold Again, find the bottom of your squat and hold that bad boy for another 30 seconds.

5 Air Squats Just as the Squat-Leap began, start with feet at about shoulder width, drop those hips into the depth of your squat, and push with your heels to bring yourself back to starting position. When hitting the top of the squat, make sure you have full extension with your hips.

6 Squat-’n’-Hold Third time’s the charm! We’re almost done. Hold that squat as steady as you can!

Nice work!

Are your legs feeling a little wobbly? I know mine are! That just goes to show how great of a workout that is! As good as that workout was, can you imagine how much more you can get done with a community cheering you on? The Bare Facts About Laser Hair Removal by Dr. Vimali Paul pigment for the laser to track it and send the energy to the source. Since the laser tracks dark pigment, the client will ideally have a lighter skin and darker hair, so tanning is discouraged to avoid burns or blisters. We have multiple lasers to address different skin tones, and our trained professionals take the utmost care to avoid adverse effects. Shaving, waxing, tweezing — we all hate it! It’s painful, time consuming, and the hair is back in no time. To get a permanent hair reduction, laser is the better way! Laser hair removal involves a series of treatments that pulse energy into the hair follicle, effectively killing it at its source. Due to the cycles of hair growth, six to eight sessions are usually required, with an approximate 20 percent hair loss each time. Facial hair sometimes requires more treatments, as it is regulated by hormonal fluctuations. Treatments are scheduled four to six weeks apart depending on the location, amount of hair, and individual growth rates. It is safe and relatively pain free, with little or no down time, and the results are worth it! Not every client is a candidate for this procedure, as the laser will not “see” white or blonde hair. MILLER MANSION The Miller Mansion faces the busy intersection of Esplanade and Cohasset, the dry outline of Lindo Channel (once known as “Sandy Gulch”) running along the perimeter of the three-acre piece of property. A garden stretches far inward from the Esplanade, providing privacy from the busy outside world and keeping the Classical and Greek construction-styled mansion a precious piece of Butte County history. The tall oak, evergreen and palm trees continue to sprout up over the years and have been witness to the many evolutionary changes of the historical piece of land. The Miller Mansion has not been the only structure that has occupied the property over the last century. It was the residence of Daniel Bidwell, after he purchased the land from his half brother, General John Bidwell. A small ranch house existed for seven years before it burned down in 1868. But Daniel Bidwell was inspired by the look of the first house and he rebuilt a very similar one in 1869 and the piece of land was soon deemed the Five Oaks Ranch because of the tall, towering oaks that surrounded the house. During this time, the Five Oaks property was surrounded by the 700-acre farmland owned by Daniel Bidwell, which was purchased from his brother for $1.50 an acre. Various fruit trees and crops occupied the massive acreage. After Daniel’s Bidwell’s death in 1887, the home provided living quarters for his

daughter, Mary Bidwell Reed, her husband, William Reed, and their son. During this time, the property featured a smoke house, milk house, granary (warehouse), carriage house, and barn—all of which were common for ranch houses for the time period. Among the many contributions made by Daniel Bidwell—agriculturally and civically—he was responsible for the installation of Cohasset Road, which was used for the lumber transportation during the construction of “The Oaks” house. The property remained in the Bidwell Family for decades into 20th century until it was sold to Edward and Meryl Stammerjohan in 1954. The Stammerjohans owned the property for nine months before they sold to Roy and Artie Miller on September 20th, 1955. The Millers made the decision to build a modern house on the property and The Oaks House was soon torn down to make room for another piece of local architectural history. The Miller Mansion was erected in the mid ’50s, displaying certain characteristics resembling features from the Bidwell Mansion and The Oaks House. And though Chico has grown up all around The Miller Mansion, occupying what once was the vast orchard owned by Daniel Bidwell, historical pieces still remain in the house from those early years, including a coal fireplace, staircase, and a chandelier from the turn of the 20th century.

New Again Kitchen & Bath Presents

House Call The Client Todd and Christine Thompson, both born and raised in the North State, have lived in Durham for 24 years. When you walk through the door of their home, you’re greeted with classic style and decor. You can just picture the couple and their two children, now college-aged, throughout the years, sitting down to family meals or curled up on the couch. When you move past the living and dining rooms, however, and round the corner, your eye can’t help but immediately be caught by a not-so-traditional sight: the staggered profiles of mounted animal heads on the left wall just beyond the kitchen. Moving closer, you take in the full glory of Todd’s “Wall of Fame,” featuring deer, elk, and caribou he’s killed over the years. All of the wall’s trophies, except for the caribou, were shot in California, but Todd has hunted all over the country and even in Canada. This corner of the home is replete with indication of his devotion to the sport, including pictures of animals, stuffed ducks, and a camouflaged chair.

May 2015: Hunting For A Fresh Look

“I was afraid I wasn’t going to be here in time,” Todd says pulling out his phone in its camo case, “because this is what I was doing last night till 3 o’clock in the morning.” We cram our heads in to see a photo of his buddy holding up a 20-pound striper fish they caught on a fishing trip out of Yuba City the night before. “And does Christine hunt?” I ask. “Noooo,” he says emphatically. “You notice how the whole house is decorated and all the hunting stuff is crammed into one corner? I think if it was up to her we’d put a curtain up.”

The Call About a year ago, the Thompsons decided they wanted to redo their kitchen, which featured old appliances and outdated white tile countertops. “We kind of put it off, wasn’t a real high priority,” Todd says. “We’ve got a couple kids in college. And then finally we said, OK, we’re going to do it. And we just pulled the trigger.”

AFTER

The Cure

BY KACEY GARDNER PHOTOS BY ERIN WENHAM

One Saturday afternoon, Christine stopped in New Again Kitchen and Bath and met with senior designer Ric Powers, who showed her around and told her about an upcoming home show where she might get some good ideas, but the Thompsons didn’t want to wait much longer. Their daughter is graduating from Chico State and their son from Cuesta College in May, and they plan to have a big party at their home to celebrate. So Ric and Christine quickly got to work on selecting the right granite. They wanted to keep their existing cabinets and flooring, which are both in good condition, so they needed to find a granite that complemented both. In the end, they settled on Giallo Veneziano, a rich golden-brown granite from Brazil. They also opted to go with a fullheight granite backsplash which Ric says tends to be less busy/challenging on the eyes. “It’s generally a more formal look,” he says. “I love the sophistication of a full-height granite backsplash. All in all, the kitchen turned out beautifully, with a polished and fresh look that’s giving even the trophy wall a run for its money in terms of bragging rights. Chalk it up as just another case of New Again Kitchen and Bath hitting its target!

ANTIQUE DIY

Tin-Tastic Herb Garden If there is one thing I don’t have, it’s a green thumb. Good thing I didn’t need one to make this sweet little herb garden! I’ve always loved vintage tins, and finally found a great way to show them off and make them functional as well. Lucky for me, the Treasure Cove in Paradise had the two perfect tins to add to my collection. Vintage tea tins and other old tin containers like this are usually easy to find at antique and thrift stores. I chose to plant a variety of aromatic herbs, like basil and ginger mint. Herbs are a low-maintenance way to add character to a sunny window or outdoor space. The best part? You’ll have fresh herbs at your fingertips to liven up your favorite dishes!

MATERIALS NEEDED Assorted tins Pre-planted herbs of your choice Hammer and nail or power drill Plastic storage bags Potting soil

PROJECT + PHOTOS BY ERIN WENHAM

INSTRUCTIONS

48

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM APRIL 2015

1

Add drainage holes to the bottom of your tins using either a hammer and nail or a power drill.

2

Line your tins with plastic storage bags to prevent rusting. You may have to cut them a bit shorter to fit.

3

Add a bit of potting soil to the bottom of your tins, and then you’re ready to plant your favorite herbs!

4

Once your herbs are planted, use a sharp object such as a toothpick or skewer to pierce the plastic bags through the previously drilled drainage holes. The weight of the soil and plant will help make sure that the holes align, allowing for proper drainage.

5

Place your herbs somewhere with plenty of sunshine. You will also want to place some sort of tray underneath your planters to protect the surface below.

6

Water your herbs a small amount each day and enjoy a fresh and tasty addition to your home cooked meals!

“Adara” is the Greek word for beautiful. Aptly named, this big cat came to our sanctuary as a donation from a gentleman in Florida to be part of our educational program on these wonderful cats. With her help, we can create awareness of habitat loss and conservation efforts to save their endangered species. Name: Adara Age: 2 years Native Habitat: Indian subcontinent, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh Food: In the wild, buffalo, deer, wild pigs, and other large mammals. At Kirshner, all of our tigers are fed rabbit, chicken, duck, beef, and lamb. Fun Fact: Tigers can gorge themselves and eat up to 60 pounds of food in one meal, though they usually eat less. Bengal tigers are the only tigers that can be born with color variations. As a matter of fact, there are four distinct color varieties — orange, white, cinnamon, and snow white. All have the classic stripes, which traverse beyond fur and are actually skin-deep. No two tigers have exactly the same stripes. Many researchers utilize the unique markings on tiger faces to identify individuals. Tigers are a rarity among cats, as they love to swim and are quite adept at it. Tigers are solitary animals and heavily scent-mark their territory. Cubs are not proficient hunters until 18 months of age and will remain with the mother for two to three years until they are ready to claim their own territory. They are sit-and-wait predators, using their coat as camouflage and waiting until prey is within pouncing distance before attacking. Barry R.
