A Shared Glass Focusing on what unites us by Alexa Benson-Valavanis t’s that time again. In recent days I’ve witnessed the dramatic increase in newly applied, brightly colored bumper stickers on the vehicles passing by. Some donning catchy phrases designed to evoke contemplation of the past, others creatively crafted to predict the future. Each one stuck on with the intent of stating a clear choice for the next President. Oh, it’s that time again. And with the great challenges we face on a national level and here at home, I love that citizens are weighing in. We should all be engaged. We must vote. The bumper sticker mosaics just highlight that involvement. As do the emails piling up in our inboxes with campaign solicitations, highlights or blunders. All of which makes it clear that election time is here. Historically, and perhaps usefully, candidates across the board have adopted differentiation tactics to make the voters’ choice easier. Both sides spend months and millions selling to us how different we are from each other so that on election day we choose the “guy” looking out for us not them. All this heightened focus on our differences got me thinking. Are we really that different? It seems to me that the majority of our wishes and concerns are shared. So much of what we value and cherish is the exact same. Of course, we have differences. We have different strategies and roles for government. We have different time-frames and agendas. Our list of top priorities might even be in a different order. But, day after day, I work with community members from the outside edges of the political spectrum to those smack dab in the middle, all of whom remind me that what is most important, is most important, to all of us. So because it’s that time again. I’ve decided to take a different approach. I’m spending the first weeks of this gorgeous new spring focusing on what unites us. I hope you’ll join me. There is a glass by the carafe with your name on it. Then after election day settles into another term, and we still have challenges to address here at home, we can do so knowing that which unites us is far stronger than anything that might make us different.

Butte Humane Society Gala Photography by Michelle Camy
A staple of the local Chico community for the past one hundred one years, the Butte Humane Society (BHS) and its illustrious volunteers have worked tirelessly to find safe and caring homes for our favorite little furry friends. On March 24th, the BHS celebrated its hundred and first anniversary with their annual gala event that, as the photos no doubt show, attracted some of Chico’s most well-known names. The gala was a complete success, raising over $100,000 for the BHS! Needless to say, we’re all excited about the help these proceeds will provide to our animal friends in need. Congratulations to Kristen Staggs and everyone who helped put this wonderful fundraiser on!

by Desireé DeLattre he demands only the highest quality feathered pillows. She’s graced television shows like Conan O’Brien and Jay Leno with her presence, in addition to guest appearances on Animal Planet and in commercials for Bestsafe.com (a European company). Zipper jams are a common occurrence when traveling, due to her over-packed suitcases, filled with all of her necessities, including her own microwave. Tara may sound like an A-list celebrity, but in actually, she is an 11 week old European Brown Bear cub who just checked into the Kirshner Wildlife Foundation. Outside the limelight, however, Tara is in physical therapy for a bowed leg four times a day, and requires a special diet due to a digestive disorder. When baby Tara grows up, she will cost up to $270.00 a month to feed alone. Thankfully, the newest Kirshner cub has found a sponsor through a new interactive reality TV series, Escape Routes. Unfortunately, many of the other animals that call Kirshner home aren’t as lucky. Special needs animals, or animals that have physical, behavioral, or mental disabilities, make up 85% of the Foundation’s inhabitants. In order to keep these animals happy and healthy, Kirshner has established educational programs, tours, and is seeking to become a visitor destination. Yet help is still needed for equipment such as fences, wheelbarrows, lumber, and other materials to build a visitor’s center. In addition, funding is needed to provide medical assistance and food to treat these exotic and endangered animals with care that is unseen anywhere else. The good news is, any animal lover, big or small can help. Whether it’s a day trip with the family to come look and learn, enrolling in summer camp for kids, sponsoring and adopting an animal, or volunteering yourself, you make the difference between alive and extinct. If you can’t make it out to the Foundation’s new location in Oroville, be sure to visit the first Thursday Night Market of the year, where baby Tara will be greeting Chico herself inside the Upgraded Living Headquarters at 301 Broadway. Don’t miss this unforgettable experience! It’s going to be WILD. 18

Chico State Ag Day
by Emily Spesert | Photography by Clark Miller Young people love to discover how farms and ranches operate. For about 3 years now, Chico State has been catering to that inquisitive, fun-loving spirit of kids by presenting Ag Day. This general field trip for local kindergarteners and first-graders is sponsored by the College of Agriculture and hosted by a small group of agriculture students called the Ag Ambassadors. “It’s a great way to promote agriculture and healthy eating,” states Ag Ambassador and Chico State Senior, Casey Selzer. “It’s such a neat way to educate children because it is so hands-on. When some kids learn how easy it is to grow their own food they are usually in such a rush to get home to start their own garden.”

Officially named the “Paul L. Byrne Agricultural Teaching and Research Center,” the University Farm on Hegan Lane is a fullyfunctioning operation meant for exactly that: teaching and research. When the kids visited for Ag Day on March 2, 2012, they learned about real agricultural chores. There were several presentational locations including operators such as Lindsay Olives, Sigma Alpha, and Young Cattlemen’s Association. “I really enjoyed watching the kids at the stock dog station; they were all so intrigued and impressed,” reveals Selzer. “For some this was their very first time ever watching a dog work sheep that close.” Kids also learned about how to make butter, milk a cow, branding,
and roping. “My other favorite was watching the kids learn how to rope the fake cows,” claims Selzer. “When some would catch a cow their faces would light up and their smiles were so genuine you couldn’t help but smile yourself.” Selzer’s particular responsibility before the event was contacting local media for coverage of Ag Day, and only pleasantries describe fellow students: “We have some of the most hardworking students out there and they care so deeply about our community.” Events such as Ag Day are meant as an opportunity for students to make connections, to be advocates, and to educate the public about issues that are important to us all. “Our town promotes events that show how community oriented we are,” insists Selzer. “It’s true that our town is known for having parties on every block each weekend... But that image is slowly fading and we hope to embrace a new image of being known for its local events, its incredible educational opportunities, and its small-town feel.” Given our local propensity toward agricultural careers, buying local, and communitybuilding, this is a valuable opportunity for the children of Chico. Thanks, Chico State!

Sweeney & Sweeney Insurance

By Aveed Khaki
pened in 1984 by John and Gigi Sweeney, Sweeney & Sweeney Insurance has been helping restaurants, farms, auto body shops, and many other local businesses manage their level of risk and insure them against loss should the unforeseeable occur. Specializing in small to medium commercial accounts, Sweeney & Sweeney Insurance has the ability to provide business owners with worker’s compensation insurance and commercial property and liability insurance while also providing individuals with home, auto and RV insurance all under one roof. A third generation insurance agent, John decided to open his own insurance agency rather than work under his family’s company. Starting from scratch, he built his business one client at a time, focusing on what he considered to be the fundamental requirements of running a business properly. Deciding from the beginning that his company would focus on coverage rather than price, and having seen the disaster caused by loss, John set out to educate his clients on the importance of fully covering all of their assets. By providing full disclosure on the minimal increase in cost between partial and full coverage,
John was able to ensure that his clients would have no gaps in their coverage, thereby fully protecting them should disaster strike. Sweeney & Sweeney Insurance has grown considerably since its humble beginnings twenty-eight years ago. It is now part of United Valley Insurance Services which provides over 460 million dollars in premium volume and offerings from over fifty of the nation’s top insurance providers. This membership allows John and his team to quote multiple providers at the same time, finding the best possible coverage and price for their clients. Continuing to focus on their commitment to customer service, the team at Sweeney & Sweeney Insurance takes pride in their own level of knowledge, constantly seeking education on changes in the insurance world that could affect their clients. Their recommendations are guided by years of experience and you would be hard pressed to find an employee who couldn’t prove it. John and Gigi have raised their family as well as their business right here in Chico. They’re looking forward to continued organic growth throughout the north valley and the areas beyond. Stop by today and see why we’re honored to call the folks at Sweeney & Sweeney Insurance close friends.

Bring Your Dreams to the Table by Royce Peterson
n the last installment in March, I mentioned the dining set I was working on. It was finished on time and sent it to Fort Collins, Colorado to join the owners who were moving there from Chico. A local Chico couple wanted me to emulate a dining set they saw offered by a company from a distant state. Although they loved what they saw online there were differences in finish as well as changes from standard dimensions that they wanted to incorporate into this set. One of the appealing reasons for having me create their heritage furniture was that since the table alone was very heavy at 450 pounds or more, the shipping charges would have amounted to several hundred dollars. We simply finished on time and loaded the table directly into their moving truck. The style of the set could be called rustic and sustainably sourced. We just like to call it sweet!
24
UPGRADED LIVING | APRIL 2012 | UPGRADEDLIVING.COM
The table is rock solid with a barn wood siding top sanded smooth then re-grained with a wire brush machine. We added massive legs and tied it all together with substantial features below to give it great character. I incorporated arches into the design above and below the stretchers. The benches and chairs complement the table and have similar arches built in to link them together as a set. The tricky part was to keep the weight of the benches down to a modest number so that they could be moved by growing children. Chair seats were covered in dark leather by Scott’s Tack and Hammer which fit into the set in a great way. If we decide to keep the direct and indirect costs to the pocket book and environment down, then buying locally produced goods makes sense. From a local barn to your table is an example of sustainable practices and is a low carbon endeavor. Call or come by to see how we can work together to make your heritage furniture dreams come true!

’m not sure what it is about spring but as soon as I hear the birds chirping in the morning I start to crave cleanliness and organization. This year, as you are cleaning your house and organizing paperwork, take some time to review and consolidate your retirement accounts. All of those old 401(k) or 403(b) balances from exemployers should be consolidated into a rollover IRA (Individual Retirement Account). Upon retirement, your rollover IRA will house all the pre-tax contributions made throughout your working years. One pooled account is much easier to manage

and keep track of when it comes to beneficiary updating and asset allocation review. If you don’t have an IRA set-up, talk to a financial advisor to get one opened. In the meantime, verify that your beneficiaries are correct. You may have gotten married, divorced, had children, etc… A common misunderstanding is thinking that a will or trust can facilitate the transfer of IRA assets. IRAs don’t pass to heirs through wills or trusts (a few rare exceptions aside). The beneficiary designation form takes precedence. If there is no form on file when the IRA owner dies then the designation
is subjected to the custodian rules of the state. Meaning, the resulting beneficiary may be the IRA owner’s estate – a very undesirable tax consequence or worse, a beneficiary or contingent beneficiary that could potentially cause an emotional upheaval in a family (i.e. ex-spouse). It’s important to keep the beneficiary form updated and a copy in a file where family can find it in the event of your passing. Spring cleaning isn’t just about washing walls and baseboards. It’s about getting your house (physical and mental) in order. It can be a pain, but the end result is so liberating and refreshing!
A Seller’s Market? Already?

he time to sell has finally arrived again, and far ahead of the time predicted! In fact, I can’t remember a time when I’ve seen so few homes listed and available to buyers in our area. The supply-and-demand economic model is being proved eachand-every day in our local market as desirable homes are seeing multiple offers within days of being listed; many of them are even selling above asking price! If you’re already interested in selling your home, now is the perfect time; act while supply is still low! If you haven’t even thought about it, it may be worth a look around, especially if you bought your home a few years ago as an investment at the bottom of the market. Regardless of what your position is though, some things will always remain the same. The following tips will help when you do decide to sell:
Staging for the buyer
Declutter your home and make it attractive for a potential buyer. Organize your home and depersonalize it so a buyer can visualize themselves living there without all of the things that make it yours. Remember that every sense counts during the first showing. Bake cookies to provide that sweet and inviting aroma that we all love coming home to. Make sure the temperature is as comfortable as possible and fill the home with soft, ambient music. Better yet, contact a staging artist like Melissa Snow at Dolce Home to help make the job even easier.
28
Spruce up the entrance You don’t have to repaint your entire home, but make sure to put a little TLC into the entrance. First impressions are just as important here as they are in your day-to-day interactions with others. Make sure the curb appeal of your home matches how beautiful it is inside! Plant a few lowmaintenance, seasonal flowers, stake a row of solar path lights, and trim back whatever plant life makes your neighbors mistake your home for the entrance to a jungle safari.

ick Hanna is no stranger to the area. Born to Tim and Janice Hanna and raised in Chico, Nick is grandson to Bud Hanna of Interwest Insurance Services, Inc. (formerly Lindo, Hanna & Abbot), one of the definitive names in insurance throughout northern California, making him a third generation insurance agent. It is also no surprise that Nick is so successful at what he does, after all, it runs in his blood. A graduate of both Pleasant Valley High School and Chico State, Nick has spent the last thirty years discovering all that the area has to offer and educating others on his findings along the way. After graduating high school, Nick went to work at Chico Fly Shop as a fly fishing instructor, leading fishing expeditions along the Sacramento, Yuba and Feather rivers for over ten years. It was this love of educating others that eventually led Nick to take on the family business in 2009; striking out on his own by joining New York Life, the largest mutual life insurance company in the U.S., and opening his doors at 2289 Ivy Street in Chico. Through New York Life, Nick offers clients the ability to purchase life and long-term care insurance along with annuities to ensure stability and coverage both during good times and times of crisis. his career and he spared no time in providing us information that applied to our own daily lives. Perhaps the most surprising information we received was truly how beneficial the coverage options are. Nick navigated a number of scenarios for each of us, asking qualifying questions and providing the proper education to alleviate any questions we had. Through it, we were presented with a number of options and the means to make an informed decision on what would be right for each of us, including opportunities that would allow us to see as much as a guaranteed 4% annual return on our insurance investment. With these kinds of possibilities available, setting up a free consultation is an absolute no-brainer. In the coming years, Nick looks forward to branching out by expanding his business to provide even more in the way of education for those seeking his services. He is currently an active member of Hooked on Fishing - Not on Drugs, a program developed by his father and Rotary that gives kids the opportunity to fish, clean and prepare their catch at Horseshoe Lake in Upper Bidwell Park, as well as being a member of Chico’s 20/30 Club. Designer's Paradise by Emily Spesert
Imagine it: A quiet, secluded 3,800 square-foot Vineyard Estate with a twostory columned façade in the Southern Colonial Style forming glorious porches both upstairs and downstairs. The inside features all-upgraded finishes (from flooring and wall paint to countertops and fixtures) throughout a formal living room, a media room and a family room, plus three bedrooms and three bathrooms. Outside, there's new landscaping with pathways, a fountain area and a vineyard for table grapes. This is reality for local homeowners Robin Flores and Mark Medearis who purchased the home four years ago and have been working on remodeling it ever since. They have now offered their home to the innovative creativity of the 2012 Frugal House designers: Deverie Jarrett Design, Selective Interiors, Fresh Start Interiors, Dolce Home, Nu 2 U, Nancy White Designs and Rebecca Rose Interiors. Since 2008, this biggest annual fundraiser for the North State Symphony has been captivating local residents of all kinds by presenting the re-imagined version of 38
various donated materials such as furniture, artwork, and remodeling supplies like flooring and fixtures. But nothing draws a crowd like offering everything up for sale that isn't attached to the house itself. Last year, Frugal House raised about $30,000 through the event. While, of course, with a name like “frugal,” the prices are kept low. Frugal House is an opportunity for interior designers to show off their style and provide decorating ideas for all who attend. It is also an opportunity this year for ten interior design interns from Chico State to work with the designers and get realworld experience. “Chico State's program is booming and the students get handson design experience participating in this project,” explains Frugal House chairperson, Deverie Jarrett. “The designers like working with the students and teaching them the facts of design [because] the designers also get new trendy ideas and expertise in AutoCAD and other programs the students are working on.” It's a mutually beneficial relationship. This year, another sell-out crowd is expected on June 21 - 23. “We have a much larger venue to show more design and more

items to sell,” states Deverie Jarrett. “We are also putting together an artesian type fair for those local artists and craftsmen to show and sell their work. We will be having some do-it-yourself workshops as well.” It's a larger venue because the estate is so grand but there will be more items to sell and workshops to showcase because more people are getting involved with the project. “We are very excited to announce Build.com as a major sponsor this year,” declares marketing specialist, Trisha Coder. Only two more months are left until we get to see what the designers and artists are creating for Frugal House 2012. In the meantime, if you would like to find out more information and buy tickets, please visit the North State Symphony Event page online or call (520) 989-5984. You could also look at The Frugal House Facebook page for weekly updates about the fundraiser including design ideas and recent donations that have caught the Frugal House eye. Deverie Jarrett is available at (530) 828-3539 or deverjarre@aol.com to answer relevant questions, accept sponsorships and receive donations from the general public.

A few tips:
here is something so rewarding about eating food straight from your very own garden. Knowing where your food comes from and how it was grown is a wonderful thing-- somehow it tastes better too! Whether you have a large yard or an apartment balcony, a vegetable garden is possible. The frost danger in the North Valley is nearly over which makes now the perfect time to get your summer garden going. What do you want to plant? Knowing what you will be planting will help you decide how much room you will need. How about some tomatoes or peppers,
Watering in the morning is best. Mulching is a good idea to keep the moisture in the soil on those hot summer days.
and don’t forget the watermelon! These are just a few of the delicious possibilities you can grow. Each of these plants varies in size and space requirements. This is why planning out your plot is so important. It can be difficult to narrow down the choices, however, it is necessary to allow plenty of space for a healthy garden. Now that you have figured out how large an area you will need to compensate for the plants you have decided to grow, find a location that gets at least 6 hours of sunshine, as this is the typical requirement for most summer crops. Whether you already have an existing garden or are starting for the first time, amending the soil is always a good idea. If the ground soil is really poor you may opt to grow your veggies in raised planter beds. If using

pots and containers from last year, it is best to start with fresh soil. Remember, the healthier the soil the healthier the plants-providing a bountiful harvest all season long. Garden friends: Make sure to leave some room for companion plants. They not only bring beautiful colorful blossoms to the garden they also, are a way to attract beneficial insects that will prey on harmful pests. Some great flowering companion plants for the summer garden include Sweet Alyssum, Coreopsis, Marigolds, and Zinnias. With the right planning and care most anyone can grow their own summer vegetable garden. By mid to late summer you will be sitting back and enjoying all the fruits of your labor.
While most of us can recognize a Lady Bug at a glance, the larvae of the Lady Bug may be mistaken for a pesky pest. These two critters in the photo above are different stages of the Lady Bug life cycle. So if you see them - leave them! They are our veggie garden friends, not foes.

Dayton Sayer Insurance by Aveed Khaki
(left to right) Ray Peck, David Sayer and Dayton Sayer of Dayton Sayer Insurance
California laws now guarantee coverage for preexisting conditions regardless of the provider you choose and will soon cover maternity and autism as of July 1st.
basketball player for Whittier College, Dayton Sayer III found himself making trips up to Chico to play rival basketball team Chico State year-afteryear, each time falling a bit more in love with our little town. After marrying his college sweetheart, they decided to move to Chico where they opened Dayton Sayer Insurance in 1960. Originally located behind the Senator theater in downtown, Dayton Sayer Insurance has seen its fair share of locations since 1960. After moving to 9th Street in 1984, the family decided to move the company once more in 1998 to one of our favorite hangouts in town, and its current location, behind Tea Bar on Vallombrosa. The company has remained family owned and operated for nearly fifty-two years. Dayton Sayer IV, the eldest of the Sayer sons, was the first of his generation to join the family business in 1978 after managing Orchard Lanes for the previous two years. His brother, David, graduated on a Friday in 1984 with a degree in accounting and began working at the insurance company the Monday after. As the company grew and moved to its final location, the brothers realized the need for another agent and invited Ray Peck, a neighborhood friend of David’s since he was a child, to join the team in 2004; he’s been with them ever since. Over the years, Dayton Sayer Insurance has built a remarkable clientele in the Chico area. The company currently provides health insurance, employee benefits, individual health plans and Medicare supplements to over two hundred local employers and over two thousand individuals in Chico and its surrounding communities. Perhaps our favorite point though, is that they have built their clientele through education rather than
salesmanship and one stop into their office will convince you of that. As of the most recent estimate, there are nearly fifty million uninsured individuals in the United States, and a large percentage of those reside right here in California. Most of these uninsured individuals don’t believe they can afford the premiums attached to health insurance, but a lot has changed over the past few years. In fact, there are now plans for nearly every income level and obtaining health insurance is significantly easier than it used to be. California laws now guarantee coverage for preexisting conditions regardless of the provider you choose and will soon cover maternity and autism as of July 1st. There are even new plans currently available for women who are already pregnant, an after-the-fact point of contention that has existed with providers for decades. In many cases, there are health insurance options that provide significantly more for significantly less than expected. As it turns out, employers can often times insure themselves and provide buy-in insurance coverage to an employee for less than what their own individual health insurance plan would have cost. The insurance is fully deductible on their taxes and it provides their employee with a benefit that is absolutely priceless. The list of these types of opportunities and options is seemingly endless, and Dayton, David and Ray seem to know the perfect combination for any person walking through their doors. Whether they’re raising money for Enloe in the Enloe Century Club, contributing to youth sports throughout the community or helping people insure themselves against having to cover health-related bills alone, the folks at Dayton Sayer Insurance are as rooted in providing for our community’s well being as anything. Set up an appointment and stop in; health care coverage might just be more affordable than you think!

For the past twenty-six years, the women of the Chico Soroptomists have come together to host the Home, Garden and Leisure Show, a fundraiser event to support all that these incredible women do both locally and abroad. This year’s show featured over three hundred local businesses from home to garden and food to professional services. We absolutely loved the show and were honored to have been in attendance.

A new smile can equal a brand new you! By Tommy Farris DDS
Ah spring, and the promise of another season of growth and warmth, budding and blossoming. As the world around us comes alive, the power and confidence hidden inside ourselves can also be awakened by removing any obstacles in the way of smiling. I have listened with enthusiasm as patients have related to me how their new smiles have freed them from embarrassment and shame, and have empowered them to become the people they have always dreamt of being. We each view our smile based on our individual tastes and preferences, but we all know the value of living life free from humiliation. Correction of the smallest imperfections or defects can have extremely large results when the appearance of
teeth are concerned. At the same time, missing teeth or loose dentures would make almost anyone feel shy about being seen in public. New smiles can be as basic as tooth whitening or as comprehensive as new veneers, crowns, or dentures. Regardless of the problem, modern dentistry offers truly amazing options with techniques and materials that are as advanced as any of our era. And by the way, pssst.....your dentistry should be our secret! No longer are we limited to unnatural-appearing dental work to have fantastic and durable results. The next time you find yourself covering your mouth when you laugh or turning to avoid showing your teeth, think what a joy it would be to turn over a new leaf and start living without embarrassment. You deserve to live without hesitating to smile. A new smile can equal a brand new you!

Spring up Your
Wardrobe
“This season, it’s all about nude shades with ‘pops’ of vibrant colors,”
says Annemarie, owner of Kreations in downtown Chico. The fashionista suggests trying out Hudson’s new line of colored denim to give you the hint of brightness you need to clear up any April shower! If you’re looking for more of a classic look, try pairing a silky top in coral, teal, or fuchsia with a pair of Mother Jeans. Despite its name, this new premium denim brand is nothing similar to the nightmarish “mom jeans.” Designed by the geniuses who brought you Sevens, the jeans are named for being the “mother of all denim.” Annemarie can’t get enough of these threads, because they keep their shape to give you some shape, but feel like pure cashmere. Other hot trends this spring include crochet tops, gold layered necklaces, “high-low” dresses, and Aztec prints. To create your new look, visit Kreations today for styling advice and all the rest!
Spring up Your
Strands
Soft, natural-looking waves are
the big look this season, and Che Divina Salon in Downtown Chico has all the right products and hints to get you styled from root to tip. To get the perfect waves, try airdrying your hair and adding in some Sebastian Whipped Creme ($21) After hair is dried, separate hair into 1-2 inch sections and use a medium-sized curling iron to give your hair the volume and curl that will have your locks looking fresh! Looking to change up your color? Go Ombre! Che Divina is your local Ombre style expert, giving you a natural or even edgier look.
Spring up Your
Steps
No outfit is complete without the perfect pair of shoes. Keeping you styled from morning till night, visit Robyn Marie’s Shoe Closet for top brands and the best steals. Robyn suggests expanding your shoe pallet with embellished flats by Madden Girl ($39.99) in Tazorr to give your look a little shimmer. For everyday shoes that can serve as an essential accent whether you’re dressed up or feeling comfortable, slip on some Go Max Berdine sandals in Pewter ($28.00). The gladiator ankle strap paired with a delicate touch of metallic and beige colors will make this sandal your new everyday shoe. “People are afraid to try out shoes with metallic tones, but they are becoming the new neutral. They can be paired with anything, and still give a touch of class or attitude. These Go Max sandals are perfect because they have some metallic features, but aren’t overthe-top,” Robyn explains. To take things a step higher, get your feet into MIA Ivette Suede Wedges in Berry ($44.99). The burst of color can add something special to any simple outfit. Walk on over to Downtown Chico to get some spring in your step!

eating than Spring. Support your health, as well as local farmers by shopping at S&S, Thursday Night Market, or the Saturday morning Farmers’ Market. Enjoy all your fresh favorites of the season- berries, nectarines, juicy oranges and peaches, and all those greens to make your salad seem like a treat. Save money, appreciate your community, and eat to live (and look!) your best at your local grocers and Farmers’ Markets.

Space
Melissa, our DIY Queen and owner of Dolce Home suggests to switch up your toss pillows and other simple home items to bring in the new season. “Use patterns that are bright, floral, and fun! Also, don’t forget to perk up the outside as well. Change up your garden, and even bring some of the outdoors (such as flowers and herbs) inside to give your home a fresh feeling. Lastly, bring in new scents. Smell is such a tiny change, but can really inspire the mood in a room. I recommend buying rose oil (available at S&S in Chico).”
Spring up Your
Fitness
tips from Scott Amick of Advanced Body Dynamics
Take advantage of what Chico has to offer in the park. An early morning jog in combination with some light stretching at 1 mile may be just what the doctor ordered to ease your spring fever. Combine that with a healthy ideal protein shake from Chico Spine and Wellness to treat your body to some special care. Upper Bidwell is a mecca for mountain biking in the Northstate. Select from any of the trails that circle Horseshoe Lake, and set your effort principle relative to your fitness goals. Busy with the kids? Pop the top on your toddler’s favorite stroller and let them soak in the vitamin D that spring has to offer. Take the 5 mile lower park loop to expose your children to just the right amount of nature.
Spring up Your
Skin
Keep your skin fresh, firm, and dewy this spring with tinted moisturizers. The Powder Room in Downtown Chico strongly recommends Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream with SPF 35 ($39) primes, perfects, protects, hydrates, and controls oils- all in one easy application. Another hot trend for spring is bright colored lip color. Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick line ($22) has the perfect spring shades to go with every skin tone that give a matte finish to last all day. If you’re more of a golden skin tone, try a more coral color for your lips. For our cooler-toned friends, stick to berry colors and pinks; both of which have more of a blue hue to them. If you’ve got that deep colored beauty, warm it up with oranges and corals. Lastly, to keep your skin in the spring spirit all year long, renew your cells with Philosophy’s Miracle Worker products and kits. This anti-aging product will keep your skin looking as young as you feel.

more than seeing young adults given a chance to prove how capable they are in professional settings. We love it even more when proving that capability also helps raise money to support their peers. The Boys & Girls Clubs of the North Valley (BGCNV) have recently teamed up with downtown Chico’s unapologetically delicious restaurant, Crush Italian Cuisine and Lounge, to prove just how effective the youth of Chico can be. Eight high schoolers from the Chico area are currently completing a job shadowing program at Crush that will teach them how to cook, serve and host a finedining experience every Monday night until May 21st; their hard

work will raise 10% from each evening’s proceeds for the BGCNV. The program has been so successful, in fact, that Crush owner Doug Guillon plans on hosting this program twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall. His commitment to these young adults is unwavering and one conversation is more than enough to prove this point. The giddy sort of excitement found in his eyes as he discusses the program is not what you would normally expect from a business person of his caliber, but it is without a doubt genuine. This excitement is echoed in the smiles and wide eyes of the eight teenagers running back and forth around the restaurant. His commitment is noticeably reciprocated by each and every one of them. Stop by Crush on the Monday of your choice between now and May 21st; enjoy a fantastic dinner, help raise money for a worthy cause and see for yourself what a little bit of trust can do.
VOLUNTEERING: NEVER STOP GROWING!! By Cory Williams
As the owner of Almond Blossom Senior Care, I’m constantly inspired and motivated by the experiences volunteers share with our elders. So much so, that I have committed to provide an orientation program to students about what to expect and how to make the most out of spending time with our elders. These Chico State students are part of the organization Community Action Volunteers in Education (CAVE), an organization that offers more than 15 volunteer programs. For those that volunteer with the elders at Almond Blossom, upon completion of their volunteer experience we issue a certificate of completion and letter of recommendation. Volunteering has a meaningful, positive impact on our community. But did you know that it can have many benefits for you and your family too? Here are some reasons to volunteer: Send a signal to your employer, teachers, friends and family: People pay attention to your life outside the environment in which they have direct contact with you. For example, your employer would be interested in the activities that give you a good work-life balance, just as academic institutions are interested in your extra-curricular activities. Volunteering reflects and supports a complete picture of you, and gives real examples of your commitment, dedication and interests. Show people what you are passionate about and maybe you will inspire them too! The Benefits of Kids and Teens Volunteering: Volunteering can teach them skills that they will use later in life, it can teach them compassion and responsibility, and it can help them to realize all the things that they have to be thankful for. But perhaps the most important benefit of volunteering for children was found in a study done by World Volunteer Web which revealed that, “youth who volunteer are less likely to engage in risky behavior, are more likely to feel connected to their communities, and tend to do better in school.” Learn or develop a new skill: Volunteering is the perfect vehicle to discover something you are really good at and develop a new skill. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” It is never too late to learn new skills and no reason why you should stop adding to your knowledge. Here’s my challenge: Find out how you can get the most out of volunteering by visiting us at Almond Blossom. Finding something to get excited and passionate about is the easiest way to start. Who knows, you might find yourself spending quality time with some incredible, inspiring elders at Almond Blossom!! You can contact us using the information below. UPGRADED YOU
Hello movers One of the most glorious aspects of the Chico spring season is the refreshing scent of flowers and green grass in Upper Bidwell Park. In order for you to experience this event to its fullest sensory potential, I would like to discuss a movement that we rarely consciously acknowledge as a movement at all! As we continue our anatomical journey downward we arrive this month at the chest. Contained in the thoracic cavity are the organs that deliver the third most abundant element in the universe(1) to our bodies’ tissue. The process of respiration is the joyous gift that I would like to bring to your attention. First, take a deep breath. Ahhhhhh, wasn’t that nice? Shallow breathing tragically affects us all! Stress and tension contribute to shallow breathing which can further induce stress and tension. This viscous cycle prevents us from a truly vigorous lifestyle. Many exercise practices have recognized this trait and have made it a priority to encourage deep controlled breathing. Yoga, Pilates, swimming, power lifting, and cycling are just a few. Ironically, those movers that will benefit from deep breathing the most often practice it the least. I’m speaking to all of you joggers and runners out there! Here are a few techniques to help you “breathe it all in” this Spring. Imagine your lungs are a balloon that you want to fill up before exhaling completely, as if you were trying to wring a towel of every last drop of water Lift your chest and inhale as if you were floating upwards Purse your lips while exhaling to control airflow Count as you exhale and see how high you can reach
Enjoy your spring and breathe with Intention!

eadaches are a common complaint in modern life. Every day in our practice, patients come to us seeking relief from headaches. Studies have shown that 90% of Americans suffer from headaches in one form or another and 45 million Americans suffer from chronic headaches. The majority of patients that show up in our practice with headaches do quite well once we get to the root cause of their headaches. It is important to understand that there are many different types of headaches. About 5% of all headaches are caused by serious medical conditions such as infections or brain tumors and should be treated by an appropriate medical specialist. The vast majority of headaches, however, are caused by internal stress on the joints, nerves and

soft tissues of the neck as they react to the abnormal alignment and position of the bones of the neck. This abnormal alignment and stress can be caused by whiplash from a car accident, poor posture, or something as simple as sitting at your desk all day. The modern work environment for many Americans involves working in a seated position looking at a computer screen. Poor ergonomics and prolonged sitting can have an adverse effect on your spinal health creating misalignment and muscle tension leading to a variety of problems, including headaches. If you do experience headaches, migraines or related neck and back pain come by Chico Spine & Wellness to find the underlying cause and let us help you remove it. In our 12 years of combined practice we have helped hundreds of people escape a life of headaches. Life is too short to spend it suffering needlessly when there might be a simple cure to what makes your head ache.
Concours Elite’s
post-accident checklist By Bob Fitzgerald
There’s nothing more inconvenient and time-consuming than a car accident. It is incredible how a split second occurrence, like a car accident, can completely alter the course of your day and for some even the rest of their life! At times like these we often find ourselves frazzled and out-of-touch with the inner-decision maker who normally functions on sensible and rational judgment, and due to this, we end up making decisions that in the long run may do more bad than good. Taking preventative action is key; follow the steps below to ensure that you’re ready to deal with the least opportune of events in the most opportune way possible. Prepare an Accident Kit Buy a small bag that will fit comfortably into your glove compartment and fill it with your registration, proof of insurance, copy of your insurance card, pen, small notepad and a disposable camera. Should an accident occur, document the situation and anything you can remember from the time leading up to it with the notepad and camera, and be sure to swap insurance and driver’s license information. Ask witnesses what they saw and record relevant names and numbers. Pay Attention to Your Body Over the first few weeks, your body may start to signal that an injury is present. You will undoubtedly receive contact from the at-fault’s insurance provider asking you if you are alright and to settle right away. Before answering this question, make sure enough time has elapsed to know for sure as many injuries take time to manifest. Keep in mind that this answer can often change just how willing an insurance company is to work with you through the healing process. Remember, your car is easy to fix, but your body is something else entirely; when it comes to an accident, soft tissue injuries can take some time to appear. Stay on Top of It Document your entire healing process and any doctor visits. Find a car repair shop that you’re comfortable with and remember that California state law gives you the right to choose the repair shop of your choice. What can seem like an insurmountable speed bump in your schedule can actually be navigated rather easily if you follow the steps above. Accidents are not welcome by any means, but if you prepare correctly, reaching a fair resolution can be significantly easier.
Will buying a Hybrid save you money? By Nick Patterson - Chuck Patterson Toyota
Since the invention of the Hybrid vehicle, the debate has remained: are we saving or squandering our money? No one can gainsay that if you are not utilizing gas, you’re saving it! The real question is, are you as a consumer paying a premium for this saving?
One dilemma with the first generation hybrid was that the batteries had a short life span and were expensive to replace. Currently, however, companies such as Toyota have 150,000-mile warranties on their battery systems. This protects each customer, and assists in keeping money in their wallets.
Ownership Pricing
Limitless Options
The cost of ownership has decreased exponentially since the first generation hybrids came about. When computers initially erupted, the cost topped several thousand dollars, yet processed incredibly slowly. Now you can buy one for a few hundred dollars, and it essentially fits in your pocket. In essence, technology becomes cheaper as it progresses.
Decreased Battery Cost
There is a Hybrid for just about every buyer. Toyota, for example, now has six models to choose from! Moreover, you can now buy one for a great price (less than $20k). These hybrids are known to grant their owners more than 50 miles-per-gallon. As gas prices continually increase, hybrid vehicles will undoubtedly become more prevalent.
