The Gift of Presence
by Alexa Benson-Valavanis
Once in awhile around the holidays my parents would pile us (my older brother, twin sister and me) into the wood-paneled station wagon and take us from our rural town in Indiana to the sparkling Chicago lights. Like everything that required patience as a child the ride felt like forever but actually only lasted minutes. Eventually the cornfields and lightning bugs made way for concrete slabs and sirens. The crisp city air filled with the smell of roasted chestnuts and the sounds of street musicians playing for spare change. There were no iPhones or iPads, no handheld video games or headphones pumping music into our little ears. Instead our time was spent together, one conversation interrupted by another and then another, until the evening was over. Our faces were frozen from cold and laughter. Our hearts were toasty with care. That’s the memory. Happiness is wrapped around it. And, love too. Most of my memories are stored that way - as a collection of minutes with people I cherish. The rest of the details seem to fade away. I never remember the clothes we had on or the fancy shoes we wore. I never remember the presents under the tree. This time of year I make room for those memories to join me. It is an easy act of kindness to my heart. Not only does it fill me with gratitude and appreciation it also guides me in setting priorities for the New Year. I can almost taste the roasted chestnuts as I write this. I will seek to give my time to those I cherish most and that which awakens the greatest parts of my soul. I will listen deeply to those in need but also to the soft song of the trees. I will fight for humanity. I will give my thoughts to kindness and love. And, with whatever time I am graciously given, I will seek to honor it by truly being there.

Chico’s Original Flash Mob by Amber Abney
While January 1, 1981 was a day that saw a high of just 55 degrees, it was that cold day in Chico that six men began a tradition that welcomed nearly 400 poeple in 2012. It was at a pre-holiday neighborhood gathering in 1980 when a group of men began to discuss the concept of ringing in the new year with a plunge at One Mile. Many areas play host to an annual event of a similar nature, and with a place like One Mile to celebrate in Chico, it made perfect sense. The idea was received in a variety of ways, some full of excitement, while others gave a mere “oh sure” response . Either way, it was decided. Janaury 1, 1981 at 1 pm, the plunge would happen. Legend states that a group of 5 approached One Mile that day, but the group added a member when the one nay-sayer realized, this was really going to happen! After quickly grabbing his trunks, 14
it was that original group of six that stood on the pool’s edge, and in one swift jump wove themselves into the fabric of our town’s history. Earning the name “Polar Bear Swim” from the media, this annual no-host, non-event involves no promotion or coordinator, but happens like clock-work each year. One might ask if there were elements that could prevent the crew from partaking, and that question was answered one very cold year. When the shivering participants reached One Mile, they were greeted with a complete freeze-over. But, after clearing off the pesky ice-skaters and breaking a hole in the ice, the Polar Bears did what they came to do! The tradition continued this year in a visible cloud of breath and shivering knees. Cheers to those who were daring enough to dive in and we too are happy to be plunging into 2013!

Lucero’s Winter Crush Photography by Clark Miller
Long before we wrote a feature on the Lucero Olive Oil company, we were lifelong fans. The recent Winter Crush event only further solidified our commitment to them. These guys know how to throw a party! From Dewey and Bobby’s sharing of secret family recipes to the wood fired pies from Bruciante Wood Fire Pizza and the sampling of some of our favorite products to all the familiar local faces, this evening was one that will most certainly go down in Upgraded Living’s book of most memorable events. We were honored to have been invited and we’re looking forward to next year. To Dewey and everyone that makes Lucero Olive Oil what it is: we wish you all the best and a very happy new year!

DIY:
Reasons to Celebrate in 2013 by Melissa Snow
How is it even possible that we are in a new year? This change also means it’s time to grab a new calendar. The January DIY is a creative interpretation of a calendar for important dates to remember and to celebrate. Materials: Paint-two colors and a basic primer Sticker Letters-choose any font Wood Wall Plaque Decorative door knob (thanks Brian) Nametags Drill and drill bit
I found the wall plaque, letters, paint and nametags at Michaels. Start your project by priming your wood plaque. Once dry, paint the color that you would like your letters to be. Wait until the paint has completely dried and attach your letters-we chose to use CELEBRATE. Go ahead and completely paint out the plaque including covering your letters. As soon as that layer of paint has dried, carefully peel back the letters to reveal your word; you might need to use an exact-o knife to lift off the stickers. Now, simply drill a hole and attach your knob. Once you’ve filled out all of your important dates, put them in order and celebrate!!! Here’s to a most amazing 2013!!! Where Do You Turn for Retirement Saving Advice? by Renée Michel, MBA
Financial Advisor for Asset Management Group
First Time Investors | Experienced Investors Investors Seeking a Second Opinion Call Today. There is Never a Fee to Talk.
Stock & Bond Portfolio Management College Savings Plans | Rollovers | Retirement Plans
When I posed this question to a client group recently I found that a majority of people often turn to their parents, a trusted family member or an online and/or written financial publication. I wasn’t surprised at these answers – I hear them often. I, too, read Money magazine and Yahoo! Finance and they offer some good information. However, when you take information from an article you’ve read in a newspaper or magazine and apply it to your own financial situation, you’re taking one-size-fits-all guidance. The same applies when speaking with a relative. You’re goals are probably not the same as those of your Aunt Sally. Chances are your vision of retirement is different from the person sitting next to you. You need a savings plan that’s tailored to your specific needs. A financial professional will evaluate your personal situation objectively and help you create a financial plan wherein you set realistic financial goals that are in line with your retirement time frame. While a loved one can – and probably should – give input on saving and investing, a professional can give you an objective perspective, taking emotion out of the equation. The heart of financial planning is the ongoing relationship. When choosing a financial advisor it is important that you feel comfortable with the person as your relationship will be ongoing. Ask for references or referrals from your trusted friends and family members (your information will always be kept confidential). Securities and Investment Advisory Services are offered through Financial Network Investment Corporation, member SIPC. Asset Management Group is not affiliated with Financial Network.

New Again Kitchen & Bath by Alyssa Worley
When you picture the word “new, what comes to mind? Clean, fresh, and updated are the adjectives that pop up for me. Those same words struck a chord with Tina and Tom when thinking about remodeling their kitchen, and by the appearance of it, they got exactly what they were looking for. Married last year, Tina and Tom longed for a fresh start in their kitchen and living room. They consulted with expert kitchen and bath remodeler, Tanya Irish-Hewett, from New Again Kitchen & Bath, in the hopes of turning those elusive adjectives into real life inspiration. Having put together her fair share of makeovers, Tanya knew exactly what was needed; she decided to start the makeover at the entrance to the house and work its way in from there. By installing new laminate wood floors in both the entry and living room, she was able to tie the two areas together and create walkways that were both sleek and functional in style. The floors were also easy to clean and therefore great for their pets as well! With the living space taken care of, Tanya moved on to the kitchen. The couple wanted their new kitchen to represent both of them, and sought after a cohesive, functional, and outwardly beautiful space. To create this, they added modern can lighting throughout the kitchen ceiling, replacing the outdated light fixtures originally installed in the 90s. Chocolate birch cabinets, geolo ornamental granite countertops, and a pantry door with a reeded glass window finished off the look, giving the kitchen the sought after curb appeal. With the makeover complete, the home finally feels like their own. Thanks to New Again Kitchen & Bath, yet another lifeless kitchen was converted into one full of pizzazz, practicality, and style. (Left) Levi Johnson poses and competes at the 2012 State Finals
Western Miracles: Levi Johnson by Aveed Khaki
Bull riding is one of the most physically demanding sports on the planet, and regardless of whether or not it is your sport of choice, you have to respect someone who has the sheer physical endurance, balance, and daring to take part in it. While the sport would be difficult enough on the lungs of someone in great physical condition, one can only imagine how difficult it would be for someone with cystic fibrosis. As Levi Johnson has proved over the past ten years though, nothing is impossible. In 2002, at just six years old, Levi was invited to the Diamond W NBC Finals Rodeo at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds in Chico as a visitor through the Western Miracles Foundation. During the rodeo, he had the unique experience of hanging out behind the chutes and meeting the cowboys who were competing in the rodeo that night. He quickly formed a friendship with Buddy
Gulden, one of the top ranked bull riders at the show. Buddy ascended to first place over the evening and ended up winning the championship buckle. During the awards ceremony, he called Levi into the arena, and presented him the belt buckle for his bravery with cystic fibrosis. Since then, Levi’s determination to compete at the top levels of the sport has been unstoppable. When Levi turned seven, he signed up for “mutton busting” and learned the art of balance while riding sheep. He won a championship buckle at the Chico event and continued riding in rodeos for a few years before stepping up to steers. Levi has continued to progress and made the transition to bulls,. As a senior at Oroville High School, he has always ridden ahead of his age group and continues to better himself with each and every rodeo. At just sixteen, Levi’s accomplishments have been enormous. On top of winning
his first senior bull championship this summer, he has qualified for the youth bull rider world finals, ranked twelfth of sixty-three riders worldwide, and done so while battling cystic fibrosis. He plans to continue his participation in rodeo and is looking forward to attending either Feather River College or Lassen College next year. Knowing the hardships and sacrifices needed to excel in such a demanding sport, he hopes to someday help other children and provide them with the same kind of inspiration and encouragement he received ten years ago. He maintains that the friendships built on that night in 2002 have allowed all of this to be possible, and they continue to drive him in his pursuit for continued success with a sport he has been passionate about for so long. With the kind of determination we’ve seen from him so far, we can’t imagine he’ll have anything else.
Western Miracles is a wish granting foundation in Chico created by David Halimi and Megan Moffett. It networks with other foundations and seeks out children that fit the foundation’s theme in hopes of making their wish come true. Levi is the defining ambassador for the foundation and a shining example of what can be accomplished with the support of those who care. Here’s what you can expect at Chico Wedding Weekend: Indulge in the Wedding Cake Gallery. Talented food artisans, people who make tasty treats for a living, have been given the opportunity to design a dessert inspired by one of six famous paintings. You might not want a cake that looks like Van Gogh’s Starry Night at your wedding, but it’s a great way to open the door to a world of options outside of butter cream. Explore your photography options with the Photography Gallery Wall. WeddingsNorthValley.com created a mock wedding. Yes, they love weddings so much that they made one up just to photograph it. You will get to see the same content displayed through the eyes of each photographer, thus providing an insight as to who is the best fit for you. It’s an easy way to compare apples to apples, and identify the styles and different points of view each photographer has. This way you can see each photographer’s talent (which they all have lots of ) and find the one whose artistic vision matches yours. What else you might need to know: The Wedding Expo takes place Saturday, January 12th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Neighborhood Church Campus in Chico, California.
Experience the Venue Tour. More than twenty venues and wedding studios will open their doors exclusively to Chico Wedding Weekend patrons on Sunday, January 13th. Take the self-guided tour around the North State to see up close and personal what they have to offer. It’s like a backstage pass to tour spaces and wedding businesses where you get to see what it is that they are capable of providing you. When asked about the importance of attending Chico Wedding Weekend, exhibitor Carey Galliani of The Idea Emporium said, “Weddings don’t come in a box; there are no rules anymore. Your wedding should be a statement of your relationship and who you are. It’s difficult to figure out what your wedding may feel like, or taste like or sound like when looking at a magazine. You may come solely looking for a florist, but you may find the perfect stationer. It’s the best opportunity to see what’s out there while indulging in finding the inspiration for your special day.” There is an abundance of talent in the North Valley, and Chico Wedding Weekend has found it and put it all together over one weekend to cater to you. Come to Chico Wedding Weekend, where it’s understood that there’s more to your wedding than the date and color options.
The Venue Tour takes place Sunday, January 13th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. You must attend the Expo on Saturday to receive your Venue Tour Passport. Grand Prizes (including a honeymoon!) will be given away both days

Getting Married?
Who Do You Invite? by Susan Keenan
hen a couple decides to tie the knot and get married, how do they decide whom to invite? It isn’t as simple as inviting everyone in the neighborhood, everyone whom they work with, or every single relative or friend that they have. Instead, the process becomes more involved once they begin to create the wedding guest list. There’s a lot to think about and it’s not all about the numbers either. In addition to determining how many wedding guests they can afford to pay for and how many wedding guests the banquet facilities can accommodate, the happy couple also needs to take in a few additional logistical scenarios. In particular, the bride, groom, and their parents need to decide whether or not they are going to keep in mind the feelings of the people they know, along with basic rules of social etiquette when it comes to determining the guest list for the wedding. If they are going to do so, then their task becomes much more difficult. As each guest receives a wedding invitation, the word spreads that the happy couple is
52
indeed getting married. As more people discover the news about the approaching wedding, more and more people begin to await the arrival of their invitation for the event. Unfortunately, not everyone will receive an invitation and some uninvited people are going to be extremely disappointed. This is the tricky part where the bride, groom, and the parents must start making the determination as to whose feelings can be spared and whose feelings cannot. In many cases, the decision is based upon which people have been seen on a regular basis. In yet a different scenario, the guest list is partly determined by the age of the people who are invited with the bride and groom either deferring to invite people their parent’s age or choosing to invite people closer to their own age. Moreover, the bride, groom, and the parents also need to think about whether or not to invite children, children of a certain age and over, or no children at all. Plus, does the wedding couple actually want to invite young children and infants who might prove to be disruptive with
UPGRADED LIVING | JANUARY 2013 | UPGRADEDLIVING.COM
their loud cries? In some cases, especially with outdoor weddings, should the bride and groom expressly state that the wedding event is intended for human guests only? No matter what the bride and groom decide, with or without the help of their parents, the important part of this scenario is to make a decision for everyone and stick to it across the board. No exceptions should be made to any rules or guidelines that are set up. This is the only strategy that will be fair to each one of the individuals involved in getting married. Walking the thin line that this necessary wedding activity requires may seem like a daunting task, but if you stick to a few tried-and-true rules of social etiquette, you should have no problem coming out unscathed. On the next page, we’ve modeled a simple test to decide whether or not the person in mind should be invited to the wedding. Follow the chart to help in the decision and remember that even if the person doesn’t make the guest list, there are plenty of other times and places to celebrate the marriage with them in the future!

As a number of local entrepreneurs will attest to, one of the largest liabilities in running a business is legal ignorance, and in this day-and-age it seems to become increasingly difficult to keep up with updates to business law with each passing year. As if starting a business weren’t difficult enough, new requirements in employment rules, ADA regulations, and everything in between are enough to drive a business owner mad. Regardless of the size of your business, compliance with these laws is crucial to its longevity, and having someone on board who is well versed in such matters could be the difference between a healthy business and failing one. Enter Reanette Fillmer. Born and raised in Chico, Reanette attended Sierra View Elementary, Pleasant Valley and later graduated from Chico State. Discovered at a young age for her acumen in Human Resources (HR) by the Target corporation, she was hired for the HR manager position in Sacramento at just twenty-one years of age. Having successfully kept the Sacramento location on track for a number of years, her assistance was requested in opening Target’s new location in San Ramon. After launching the new location and nurturing the business for a year, she decided it was time to move closer to home, taking jobs as an HR assistant for Butte Community Bank, HR manager at Sacramento Superior Court and finally HR director for Tehama County. In 2009, Reanette decided to branch out and began consulting on her own. In 2012, she started an HR consulting firm of her own, aptly named Argus HR Solutions, in memory of a dear friend of hers and after the Greek god who watched over the safety of others. Since then she has acted as a guardian for such local businesses as Klean Kanteen, Alternative Energy Systems, Butte County Housing Authority and a number of other small to mid-sized businesses that have expressed a need for HR support but not needed an HR manager. Perhaps that is where Reanette’s business functions most effectively, filling the HR gap that is often left open in small businesses due to budgetary constraints. Rather than hiring an in-house HR manager, which is often impossible for most small businesses, Argus HR Solutions allows small to mid-sized businesses to benefit from a retainerstyle service that places Reanette’s knowledge of employee and labor relations at their beckon call. Best of all, this service is completely affordable for any small business and when you consider the potential losses sustained by an out-of-compliance infraction, the cost seems completely negligible. If you’re a small business owner, conducting a compliance audit may be the most beneficial thing you can do for your peace of mind and the health of your business. Making sure your business is fully compliant with both state and federal law as well as employment requirements will make sure that all legal elements of your business are in the right place, allowing it to continue to grow without legal obstacles. With the upcoming changes and reform taking place in 2013, there is no better time than now to make sure your business is ready for what’s ahead. Whether you’re in need of employee manuals, training, or even a business compliance audit, call Reanette and achieve the kind of peace of mind that will allow you to focus on what you do best in your business: running it. photograph by Michelle Camy
Look back, move forward by Briana Lindstrom
We counted down to one, the ball dropped, we kissed, we yelled “Happy New Year!” through smiles and sounds of fireworks, glasses clinking and friends celebrating, we sipped the champagne and the cider and we woke up on January 1st to another day of life. The joyful turbulence of the holidays has passed, the long winter is before us and real life begins again. Ohhh January, you are so bittersweet. “January” was named in honor of the Roman god “Janus,” a two-faced god who could simultaneously look
at the future and the past. He is the god of beginnings and transitions. For most of us January symbolizes a new beginning. We say goodbye to last year and prepare ourselves for a fresh start, a new adventure, a clean slate. In order to make the most of this new beginning many of us make personal resolutions. But what’s the use of a resolution if you break it within a week or two? Starting the new year with a “fail” is no way to go. Here are some tips to help you make resolutions you can keep, and keep resolutions you make.
Make it something Be specific.. Don’t Make a Plan. Set Make a group you really just say “I will lose yourself up for resolution. Erica and the girls at PB&J boutique let us take over the dressing room and how could we resist? Everything you see at that shop is worthy of trying on! A beautiful long dress with romantic lace and gemstone detailing in back was the ultimate “yes!”
The Hair Company took care of
Lisa Parker She’s 24, been married for 6 years, has a 15 month old, works full time and is attending school. So when does Lisa have time to take care of herself? Never? Well she somehow found the time and energy to lose 30 pounds and we couldn’t resist but to try and match her effort with a makeover. She smiles all the time, looks great in everything and was fun and energetic to spend the day with... She even shared her sandwich with me in the middle of all the makeover madness! We love her new look and admire her ability to rock a red lip!

the rest. Tanya gave her a rich, even spray tan. Kristen created a clean, but glamorous look with dark eyeliner, perfectly matched foundation to make her glow and luscious red lips! Kylee added caramel highlights to warm up her hair, long layers to take some of the weight out, and with a little convincing she got Lisa to take the plunge into the world of bangs!! They frame her face, look amazing with her cheekbones and bring out the sparkle in her eyes.

Dana Sutter A 29 year old mother of a 3 year old and an Autism Support Specialist for children under 5 years of age, Dana puts most of her time into caring for others and doesn’t have much time or energy left to pamper herself. Spending time with her during her makeover, we enjoyed her sweet personality, ability to listen to the stories of the other makeover winners, and humble, kind spirit. Dana admits to being busy, but says “she wouldn’t trade her life for anything,” and we’re sure she’s a favorite of the kids she works with, and an attentive, loving mother. It was fun watching her transformation and we hope her “kids” can still recognize her now that she’s gone glam!
The team at Mecca beautified Dana from head-to-ankle, Urban Sole covered the toes! A boutique and salon that feels like a slumber party style session with all your best girlfriends, Mecca was the perfect place for Dana. Ashleigh started off doing a natural looking spray tan to add that healthy glow to Dana’s skin. Monique styled her with creative layers of jewelry, a belt she patiently taught us how to tie and a salon favorite, the “Stevie Nicks Dress,” which was beautiful on Dana’s shape and had all of us girls peeking in on her to see the glamified new woman! Danielle was in charge of makeup where she highlighted Dana’s already soft, pretty look with nude lips, a sable brown smoky eye, and a wisp of soft color to make her cheeks pop. Claudia added long layers to her hair and shaped the bangs to allow more movement. She colored Dana’s hair using Balayage, a French coloring technique to create depth, dimension, shine and warmth.
Urban Sole completed the look with comfortably cute taupe booties.

Alex Van Dewark Alex was recommended by our very own Aveed Khaki who says “When I’m not publishing Upgraded Living Magazine, I consider myself a part time matchmaker, and no one is more deserving of a perfect match than my good friend Alex Van Dewark. As a local paramedic, Alex spends his days and nights saving lives. When he isn’t running an ambulance, he works for Odyssey, a philanthropic team building company in Chico that partners with corporations to build prosthetic hands for those who have lost a hand due to mine fields overseas; they also build bicycles for children who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford one. Heroic, charitable, kindhearted, and successful at only 23 years old, there are few eligible bachelors in town that I hold in the same regard. I nominated Alex for a makeover as he hasn’t had time to focus on style, and it was the only thing he was lacking. And yes, ladies, we are looking to set him up on blind dates so feel free to send us a message on Facebook if you’re interested. 72

The Poison Apple worked their magic on Alex, playing up his best features and giving him a clean, fashionable look. Rocio waxed his eyebrows for shape, trimmed and tinted his hair and styled it with (just a little) product. Urban Laundry has to be the best place to buy menswear in Chico, and fitting Alex was a breeze! Guys tend to have a hard time knowing what actually fits, but once you see a man in the right clothes, the difference is bold. Alex is wearing black pants, a button up and a structured blazer; a great outfit for any occasion that can be dressed up with boots, or dressed down with TOMS.
Britni Auer The Poison Apple is a magical place and Kim is the fairy godmother. Festive and warm inside, windows that look down on the streets of Chico, and women that make you look and feel like royalty, we knew Britni was in good hands there. Kim gave Britni’s hair all over color in mahogany, using a no-ammonia color for shine. Highlights were painted on using the French balayage technique. Kim layered her hair with a technique that creates movement and a less ‘polished’ look which is the trend. Using a curling wand she created loose curls, then “unlocked” the curl by holding the end of the curl with one hand and twisting the outer edges of the curl upward. This breaks up the curl, making it look slightly messy and sexy. To retain hair color, Kim recommends investing in a color shield shampoo (more important than the conditioner). Rocio used Temptu airbrush foundation to make Britni’s skin look soft and even. To make her eyes appear larger and really stand out, she used Urban Decay liners and shadows. For rounder faces, Rocio suggests using bronzer to create bone structure; she used Youngblood Bronzer in Sundance on Britni. A Neutral lip with liner, MAC lipstick and a touch of gloss for freshness was the perfect combo for Britni’s already fabulously full lips. Urban Laundry was a style session in itself! All of us

ladies huddled by the dressing room adjusting and admiring Britni’s new look. The skinny jeans, flowy leopard print top with a flattering front-to-back cut, sparkly bracelet and necklace all from Urban Laundry and scrumptious Frye boots from Urban Sole was the winning combo.

A mom of a 2 ½ year old daughter and a 4 month old son, full time employee at Build.com and on the brink of turning 30, Britni chooses to spend her time and money on her family, putting her own style and relaxation on the back burner. She has lost a good amount of weight, is continuing to lose more and is ready to freshen up her look. We spent the day checking in on her as her transformation took place, and we found Britni to be full of hugs and patience! A great person to work with and beautiful inside and out, we were glad to see her confidence growing as the day went on. By the end of the day, Britni looked fabulous from head to toe and had a new hop in her step as she strutted her stuff in boots from Urban Sole that we all began to covet!

Nancy Francis Laurie Maloney from Sabbath House, the homeless women’s shelter at The Jesus Center wrote to us asking if we’d give a makeover to one of the women who is trying to get her life back on track. We loved her idea and even more, we loved Nancy Francis, the intelligent, poised, kindhearted woman who was chosen. Nancy is 62 yrs old and has been staying at Sabbath House for the last 7 months trying to get back on her feet. Nancy owned a home in Durham for 47 years, went through a rough divorce and in the midst of the mortgage crisis she lost her home. She is carrying more than a full load of business classes at Butte College and will be graduating with her Associate’s degree in accounting soon. Nancy admits that through these difficult times, she has really let herself go. Now that she’s put in so much time and work, she’ll be looking for a job soon, moving on from Sabbath House and beginning a new chapter in her life. What better way to start than with a brand new look? We spent the day with Nancy getting to know her sharp-witted but soft spoken way, her ability to take things in stride and how she’s learned from the hardships she’s endured. Her makeover turned out beautiful! From her hair to her lashes to her clothes, posture, shoes and back up to her smile, we finally got to see past the obstacles life has thrown her way and into the real Nancy. She is an ambitious, strong woman who never gives up and is about to see her hard work pay off with a second chance at a new life. We can’t wait to see what’s next for her!

AGua Azul Oasis creates an element of relaxation hard to find in these busy times. Nancy was there soaking up the peace for hours, lounging by the fireplace and enjoying the royal treatment. San Mari gave Nancy a mini-facial with waxing. She used Jane Iredale mineral makeup to even out her skin and create a clean look. As a final touch, she applied Xtreme Lashes to accent Nancy’s blue eyes. Laura gave her a color and cut with highlights and lowlights to blend out the gray, then styled her hair with large curls and bangs to frame her face. Katie at Katie’s Corner had tons to offer and we may have flooded the dressing room with options, but hey, a girl needs to play dress up every oncein-awhile! A black cami with black slacks were understated and slimming, and a multi-colored shimmery sweater created a beautiful feminine shape and brought out Nancy’s natural skin tones. A statement necklace and gold earrings added an element of grace.
Urban Sole’s black demi-wedges were a perfect fit and added a bit of height to a brand new Nancy!
Mary Cianelli Mary’s family is crazy for her, and it’s not hard to see why. Nominated for a makeover by her daughter, son and daughterin-law, we were touched to see the kind of love she taught to her own family. She’s been married for 37 years and takes care of her husband and children before anything else. “She is selfless and generous, and volunteers feeding the homeless with her church community,” says her daughter, Gina. “She will be turning 60 in March, but looks like she’s in her 40’s. My mother is one of those special people who deserves someone to pamper and dote on her for a change! She is one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever met, inside and out.” We called to offer Mary a makeover while she was in Maryland for her father’s funeral, and when she returned home we were happy to finally give her a day of indulgence and fun with Gina by her side every step of the way. Mary is spunky, sweet and beautiful and the time she spent at Mecca was a time of glamour and fun for all who were present. She was gracious and humble and as I’m sure her family and friends know, a person whose liveliness and sincerity are rare treasures.
Claudia and the girls at Mecca were impressive, as always. The rooms were filled with laughter and girl talk and the boutique’s glitz and glam were enticing. Ashleigh gave her a clean, classic look with light, fresh makeup and individual lashes to bring attention to her eyes. Claudia gave her highlights and lowlights and freshened up her cut to frame her face and bring some structure and style to her new look. Monique is a fashion genius pairing an adorable tutu style skirt with a satin top and cocktail jewelry, a look that made us crave a night out in Paris! S’il vous plaît!
Urban Sole tied it all together with a Mary Jane style suede black heel.

Maria Sayre Maria is the mother of two very loved girls, Tatiana 20 and Amanda 13. Amanda is developmentally disabled with a rare disorder called Angelman Syndrome. Maria’s mother moved in with her and her husband 6 years ago and has stage four breast cancer. Needless to say, most of Maria’s time is spent caring for her mother and younger daughter. When she’s not at home, she works as a special education aide, which she absolutely loves. To top it all off, she is legally blind and cannot drive. She pours her heart into caring for others, and at 42 years old, she found a way to lose an amazing 30 pounds! “I do my best to be the best wife, mother and daughter I can be. Sometimes I get lost in that.” We salute her love for others and bright, humorous outlook on life in the face of adversity. We convinced her to take a day off of work and let herself get some much-deserved pampering, and lucky for us she was great to spend the day with. Her smile is contagious and her easy-going attitude gave our stylists the freedom to create a festive, fun new look to help bring her inner beauty out! 76

Erica at PB&J never disappoints with her selection of special pieces. Colors, embroidery, beautiful shapes and rich fabrics fill her boutique with girlish whimsy. Maria looked playful and glamorous in her blue patterned dress, black cardigan, leggings and leather loafers.
Blondie’s took great care
of Maria in their girly pampering paradise, giving her a full glamour treatment complete with an updo! Dani gave Maria a fresh look with subtle, natural makeup to make her face glow and took extra time to focus on making her eyes look amazingly big and blue. Kirsten brightened up her hair with highlights, curls and a flirty updo that brought her look to another level. Chris did a great job on Maria’s nails which not only match the dress, but are a versatile metallic shade that is perfect for winter.

(Top Right) Dr. Christine Sloop. (Bottom right) Bernadette Connoly, Sally Vertolli, and Dr. Sloop (Bottom right corner) Entrance to Skyway Primary Care
Skyway Primary Care and Wellness It is no secret that we have a number of primary care facilities in our area. We get sick, we visit them, we grab a prescription, we take it, we feel better, and we repeat the process all over again. So has been the standard in healthcare for the majority of what most of us can remember, and for a number of us, it’s all we’ve ever known. Regardless of the simplicity of this cycle though, it is not at all beneficial for our bodies, and thankfully change has been on the horizon for some time. We recently covered a book written by Dr. Lobosky, a local neurosurgeon, on the failure of the American healthcare system and what we can do to change it. From what we can see, the doctors at Chico’s new Skyway Primary Care facility, built by Feather River Hospital, are committed to doing just that. Built on the principles that healthcare should be preventative rather than focused on treating symptoms, Skyway Primary Care is working diligently to make a difference in how we view health care and through it, our own bodies. Of the top ten causes of death in the United States, a whopping seven of them can be alleviated by making simple changes to how we live. Diet and exercise are the two largest factors in these lifestyle changes, and as any of us who have gone on a last straw diet probably already know, they are two of the more difficult ones. The reason for the difficulty though isn’t so much in the ease of the change, but rather in how enjoyable the change is. When most of us diet, we tend to cut out everything that tastes good, thinking surely this will cure what ails us. If we could keep up on eating tasteless foods for months or years on end, it just might, but reality tells a different story. Rather than robbing ourselves of that which we enjoy, the doctors at Skyway Primary Care have created a system that allows us to continue enjoying the foods that are good for
us and taste good too, while introducing us to others we may not have tried before. In the coming months, Skyway Primary Care will open the doors to its new demonstration kitchen headed by Chef Travis, trained at Le Cordon Bleu and currently the Executive Chef at Feather River Hospital. Previously at the Ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay, Chef Travis knows healthy cooking, and it is the doctors’ intent to have him share this knowledge with the local public. Once a month, the demonstration kitchen will open its doors and invite the public in to learn his secrets, and through it teach those who attend how to prepare healthy food that tastes great too. Outside of this wonderful addition, the doctors are also offering weekly support groups for diabetic patients and those looking to lose weight. Best of all, nutritional education will be provide by Registered Dieticians. Though we may have made it sound like Skyway Primary Care focuses on food and food alone, it is but one of their many passions. The doctors here provide primary care for walk-ins and appointments for well-woman care, pediatrics, nutritional counseling, and so much more. A partnership with the physical therapy office next door also provides doctors the ability to further patients’ recovery through exercise, allowing for an even more complete recovery. Located at 111 Raley Blvd Suite 140 in Chico, the new clinic is now home to providers Sally Vertolli ARNP, Christine Sloop MD, RD, Randall Sloop MD, and Bernie Connolly PA-C. It is open from 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday, all private insurance is accepted, and the doctors are accepting new patients at this time. Stop by and see what doctors focused on preventative medicine can do for you; your body will be glad you did.

(Above and bottom left) Dr. Kristiane Ransbarger and her daughter (Top right) Drs Barthelow, Ransbarger, and Shaw
Dr. Kristiane Ransbarger Pediatric Ophthalmologist Often times, it is difficult to remember exactly what we were like as children, but one thing that goes without the need for much reflection is the recognition that we were significantly different beings than we are today. Our ability to express our needs, though probably quite a bit louder back then, were nowhere near as detailed as they are now, nor did we have the option to act on them through our own means. Growing up in those newly minted bodies, everything was a novel mystery and self inspecting our own proper development was likely as innate as the ability to solve a Rubik’s Cube. These inherent differences call for a different kind of interpreter, and as time and science have progressed handin-hand, so too has our recognition for the need of specialization. When it comes to this, there are few doctors as specialized in interpreting childhood development as local pediatric ophthalmologist Kristiane M. Ransbarger, M.D. Originally from a small town with a population of two thousand in eastern Washington, Dr. Ransbarger attended George Fox University near Portland, Oregon, later completing medical school and her fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at Loma Linda University’s School of Medicine. Wanting to return to the small town atmosphere she grew up in
rather than practicing medicine in one of the metropolitan universities, Dr. Ransbarger jumped at the chance to move to Chico with her husband, Darron Ransbarger, a Chico local and ENT physician. Citing the lack of a full-time, fellowshiptrained pediatric ophthalmologist within an hour-and-a-half in any direction, Dr. Ransbarger joined the teams at North Valley Eye Care in Chico and Ridge Eye Care in Paradise. This allows her to provide the specialization Butte County parents were in desperate need of. Most commonly, Dr. Ransbarger examines and treats patients for abnormal visual development, a condition known as amblyopia. This occurs when one or both eyes, though structurally normal, do not develop the ability to see clearly. Amblyopia can be caused by a high or asymmetric glasses prescription or misalignment of the eyes (strabismus). Thankfully, amblyopia treatment is highly effective when initiated at an early age. Vision screenings at school and pediatricians’ offices will often provide the cues to determine whether or not a visit to a pediatric ophthalmologist is necessary. Additionally, a family history of childhood eye disorders would warrant an exam to ensure that preventative measures are taken to provide excellent visual development. From a layman’s standpoint, it can often be difficult to assess the need for a complete
eye exam, as amblyopia can be completely asymptomatic. However, if your child is having difficulty focusing, if one of his eyes wanders or crosses at times, or if he can’t see in 3D during a 3D movie, a visit should be strongly considered. The sooner a problem is detected, the more likely it can be corrected. Other reasons for scheduling a visit with Dr. Ransbarger would include persistent tearing in one or both eyes or a droopy eyelid. Additionaly, Dr. Ransbarger is trained to evaluate and treat adults with strabismus and double vision. As a mother of a two year old, and another baby due in March, Dr. Ransbarger is quick to point out that her little one has made her a better physician, and her time spent with patients has made her a better mother. Having experienced both sides of the coin, she prides her practice on making sure that parents have the most comfortable and efficient visit possible. Her office strives to limit long waiting periods, and she works in both Chico and Paradise to save families from having to make the trip in one direction or the other to see her. As any parent will likely agree, that level of service is a godsend when a child’s health is on the line. To schedule an appointment in Chico, call North Valley Eye Care at (530) 8911900, or in Paradise, call Ridge Eye Care at (530) 877-2250.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL
by Dr. Vimali Paul
Unwanted facial and body hair is a thing of the past, thanks to laser hair removal! During the laser hair removal process, concentrated light passes down through the hair shaft to the follicle. The laser pulse vaporizes the pigment in the follicle. This results in eliminating or hindering hair growth in that area. Since the laser is attracted to pigmentation, it will not “recognize” very blonde or gray hair, and cannot be used on those clients. Hair growth has three phases: growth, regression, and resting. Treatments work by disabling only the hair that is in the active growth phase. Therefore, typically 3-6 treatments, about 6 weeks apart are required for permanent hair reduction. Most people experience a mild-moderate pinching or stinging sensation with laser hair removal. Immediately following treatment, the area will appear a bit red and swollen, subsiding within a few hours. At the Derm Bar Med-Spa, laser hair removal is one of our many specialties. We have state of the art lasers for all skin types. Call us at (530) 342-2672 for your free consultation!
“Let’s see…what’s on my agenda today?” Sound familiar? Between business meetings, family responsibilities and other obligations, our schedules require many different listening environments. There’s the quiet office, the large board room, the noisy car, the crowded restaurants…the list goes on. And you’re expected to hear everyone crossing your path. Do you? If you have a hearing loss, it may seem impossible to understand people in many situations, but hearing aids can help. Hearing aids have drastically improved with professionals on the move in mind. They are no longer the clunky, noisy devices that your grandparents had; instead,

they are small, unnoticeable devices with cutting-edge technology to help you reconnect to your world. With features that enable the wearer to focus on a single speaker, while suppressing other interfering sounds, background noise in a meeting is no longer distracting. Other features allow the aid to analyze the environment and adapt in real-time by changing to four configuration points, so you can hear comfortably in the restaurant and car. Aids can even connect to Bluetooth devices such as televisions or phones. With hearing aids like these, isn’t it about time you rejoined the conversation and… Enjoyed the world of sound?

When Do I Need an Estate Plan? by Nicole Plottel
AN ESTATE PLAN FOR THE NEW YEAR IS A PLAN FOR EACH AND EVERY YEAR. Wishing you a prosperous and healthy New Year
, CELA
Estate & Long Term Care Planning Center
3120 Cohasset Road, Suite 10 Chico, CA 95973 | 530-893-2882 | HarrisPlottel.com
Many people think an estate plan is only for the wealthy. Not so. In order to know when you need an estate plan, you must first understand its purpose. People often think an estate plan is solely intended to distribute assets at death, perhaps avoid a probate or even minimize estate tax exposure - all good issues involving your wealth and your death. Equally important, and often overlooked, a good estate plan authorizes someone to properly manage your affairs while you are living, regardless of the size of your estate. Executing appropriate durable powers of attorney, both for healthcare and financial decisions, regardless of whether you are married, single, wealthy, or not, is the most important component of a comprehensive estate plan and should be implemented now. I emphasize the word “appropriate because not all durable powers of attorney are the same and may cause unintended consequences if done incorrectly or without sound legal advice. In considering when to implement an estate plan, understand that wealth is only one factor that affects the type of estate planning tools used, i.e. whether to use a trust or a will, etc. Other nonfinancial aspects of an estate plan address the care of minor children or the treatment of a spouse at your death. The birth of a child, a marriage, a divorce, a death in the family, a special needs child, the purchase of a home, the receipt of an inheritance, or a diagnosis of an illness are all appropriate times to consider creating or amending an estate plan. Ultimately, the design of your estate plan will be dependent on the many factors unique to your situation. Harris and Plottel 3120 Cohasset Rd. #10 Chico (530) 893-2882 81

Simplify to Succeed by Scott Amick, CPT
The advice that I am giving to movers in the new year is simply this: SIMPLIFY. In simplicity we find so many solutions! As you set your fitness goals for 2013, gather your resources, make a simple goal to concentrate on one exercise principle at a time and take a deep breath before plunging in. As with any change there will be a layer of chaos that you must peel back in order to get to the sweet spot in your schedule. You know the spot I am talking about. That place where it is easy to “fit in” some energizing exercise, a fresh and healthy meal, or a few minutes to sit with your eyes closed in meditation. Being prepared for the chaos will greatly increase your chances of adherence to your newfound “sweet spot.” I am sure you have heard the “Be Prepared” motto before. I am offering a perspective shift from this might get in my way to this is going to get in my way and I know exactly how to manage it .
What would the new you look like?
Healthier? Happier? Less stressed? by Dr. Michelle Anderson
Stress affects all of us and comes in three forms: traumas, toxins, and thoughts. In other words, our lives are impacted daily by physical, chemical, and emotional stress. All of these types of stress have a negative impact on our body’s ability to function properly. Proper function in the human body is directed by the nervous system, your control headquarters – literally! In order for your body to perform all its daily functions, the nervous system needs to be working properly. When there is stress through toxins, traumas, and thoughts, the nervous system function diminishes, directly affecting the performance of the rest of your body. These stresses divert energy from our daily healthy functions reducing the amount of energy that we have available for concentration, focus, physical performance, healing, and enjoy-

ment of life. When this happens the human body physically feels the effects of traumas, toxins, and thoughts in tight muscles, restricted joints, perhaps even physical pain such as headaches, neck pain, or tension across the top of the shoulders. These symptoms are a few signs that the body is experiencing dysfunction on a very fundamental level. In order to reduce the effects of chemical, physical, and emotional stress, one must restore proper function to the nervous system. This directly impacts the body’s ability to heal from the stresses encountered and to better process the incoming stress on a daily basis. As you visualize the New You, ask yourself, what you are going to do this year to reduce the toxins, traumas, and thoughts that cause stress in your life.

I found a path to wellness that I could trust in Yoga.
Dr. Paula Barros
by Dr. Paula Barros, D.C.
m
The deep healing potential offered in Yoga practices has proven itself hundredfold. Free of drugs and surgery, we are able to heal ourselves as we align more deeply to our own authentic nature. The traditional teachings of Yoga, if practiced on a daily basis, revitalize the heart and soul, which ultimately leads to knowing deep peace within and that’s what I consider wellness; a sense of deep, natural peace. Yoga is based on a pivotal concept that each of us already has the answers to our own deepest healing, both in the challenge
of a specific ailment and in the general malaise of an unfulfilled lifestyle. The answer to my own healing journey was not something I could find in a textbook, or in a medical journal; it was about doing what worked for me, one moment at a time. In Yoga, we learn the art of becoming present to ourselves first and then to settle deeply into the natural rhythms of each moment. This is apparent when you’re in the middle of a pose and feel touched by the force of life flowing gracefully within the body, freeing your mind and breath. Therapeutic Yoga teaches us to observe
resistance in the body and then to allow movement of breath beyond that blockage. For any individual who steps onto the mat, there must be a willingness to let go and to turn your attention inward. Throughout your asana practice, you receive many opportunities of postural integration to align yourself more truly and authentically with your divine source and realize your own ability to heal. Tree Care During Storm Season by Aveed Khaki
Each and every winter, we have a set of days where we huddle together in our North State homes, listening to the wind howl outside; the skies turn a mighty gray, rain comes down in sheets, and we await the possibility of a clear morning. Thankfully, our little pocket of Northern California has a relatively temperate climate, and these clear mornings have become almost guaranteed after a major storm. Unfortunately though, due to one of our major blessings and our lack of attention to detail, these mornings can often be the bearer of significant destruction and expensive repairs. In Butte County, we are fortunate enough to have a higher-than-normal density of trees. These giants provide us with shade in the one-hundred-plus degree summers, inspiring landscapes during spring and fall, and impeccable air quality year-round. Regardless of their importance to our daily lives though, it is clear that we often neglect to take into account that they too are living things and need just as much care and attention as any other. Year-after-year, harsh winds and heavy rains tear these trees apart and send them falling onto homes, businesses, cars, and landscapes. The devastation, often times, is enough to remove us from our homes for long periods of time, or set our finances back considerably. Learning to spot signs of sickness in the trees around you could save you from such unexpected costs, and often times if caught soon enough, save the tree as well. Mark Wesley, from M&S Wesley Tree Service in Chico, was kind enough to provide us with some information on what to look out for this winter season.
1. Root rot and trunk rot
Perhaps one of the most important items to spot, a quick look around the trunk of the tree could provide clues to whether or not the foundation has been compromised. If you see mushrooms growing around the base, chances are the roots are deteriorating and the fungi are living off of it. A tree in this condition will likely need to be removed immediately as it is at an extremely high risk of uprooting during a storm and causing significant damage to structures nearby.
2. Fruiting bodies and cankers
Fruiting bodies are fungi that are living on the actual tree, upwards of its base. These fungi can create cankers or recessed, bumpy areas on branches that appear to be completely dead. The cause of this can be superficial or deeprooted (pun intended), and a tree analysis should be performed to determine the cause. Most often, trees in this condition can be saved when symptoms are caught early.
3. Codominant stems
Codominant stems occur in trees that tend to have multiple tops. Branches diverge at a point, leaving what appear to be tear marks in the bark where they join. These divergent branches are significantly weaker than branches that grow uniformly outward from the tree trunk and are, even in healthy trees, the most commonly lost parts during a winter storm. Should one of these branches be large enough, the damage could be massive. Proper pruning and shaping can help alleviate these problems.
Often times, a visual inspection of the tree may not be enough to assess its fragility. If limbs are beginning to bow or if the tree just seems to be less than healthy, calling a professional tree service like M&S Wesley Tree Service could potentially save you thousands to tens of thousands of dollars in damage. The goal, as always, is to save these trees and bring them to optimal health. The sooner they are inspected, the better the chances of doing just that. Call M&S Wesley Tree Service today and make sure your home is ready for the upcoming storm season!

Noble Orchards by Aveed Khaki
photography by Michelle Camy
Founded ninety-one years ago by Perry Noble, Noble Orchards has become a household name throughout Butte County, and for those of us who have had the pleasure of visiting the ranch, the name will likely elicit a pavlovian-style drool. 85
hough the orchard is now a local success, the nearly century long road to this point wasn’t without its fair share of challenges, and as a business that pushed through the Great Depression, that statement should come without any surprise. Originally a Pippin Apple producing ranch, Perry Noble’s orchard was one of nearly sixty similar orchards in the early 1920s. An ideal location for producing apples, the conditions available throughout the Paradise foothills guaranteed full flavor and exquisite crispness, and through these favorable conditions, continued to attract entrepreneur farmers from both near and afar. After the stock market crash in 1929 though, the demand for fruit began to deteriorate. As money grew tighter in homes across America, citizens began to commit their money to higher-density foods that provided greater sustenance, spending extremely hard-earned dollars on meat, eggs, bread, and milk. Rather than folding, as many business owners did during this time, Perry adapted his business model to the conditions at hand, shifting the focus of his ranch to raising and selling anything of demand. By the middle of the Great Depression, Perry had made a new reputation for his business as the largest chicken producing ranch on the Paradise ridge, delivering eggs and meat throughout the county. Regardless of the shift, Perry remained true to the multiple varieties of fruit he had originally committed to and continued to grow them throughout these undeniably tough times. As America pulled itself out of the Great Depression in the mid-1940s, money began to slowly flow back into the area and with it again came the demand for items like fruit that had been seen as out of reach for most just ten years prior. Noting the uptick in the economy, Perry reversed the focus of the ranch once more to its original foundation, planting new varieties of apples throughout his 40-acre parcel of the foothills. By the mid-1960s, Noble Orchards was in full-apple-producing-swing 86
once again, and Perry’s timing couldn’t have been better. Demand was steadily growing throughout the world, and he took the opportunity to secure exporting agreements with countries throughout South America. While Paradise remained small at just five-hundred or so residents, Noble Orchard was proving that smalltown didn’t necessarily have to equate to small-business. In 1969, Perry decided it was time to hand the reins over to his eldest son, Vincent. Operating the orchard along side his wife Julia for the next fourteen years, the pair continued to grow the business, securing new contracts throughout California and began exporting apples to a majority of the state’s urban centers. Interested in expanding the business even further, the two began experimenting with planting other varieties of fruits including persimmons and stone fruits like peaches and nectarines. Continuing the Noble family tradition, Vincent and Julia decided to pass the business down the family tree once again in 1983. Their son, Jim Noble, took the business over and has been at the helm of Noble Orchard Co. ever since. Working alongside his wife Laurie, Jim continued to push the company forward and the brand has continued to flourish. In the mid-1990s, the couple and their ranch staff conducting a sweeping replanting, introducing a number of new varieties to the orchard and fortifying the veteran varieties. One of the most successful of these varieties has been the Pink Lady. Originally from Australia, these crisp and tart apples have become synonymous with the orchard and are as much a souvenir of a memorable visit as any of the gift baskets. In the past decade, the nationwide concern with providing our school-age children with healthy foods has continued to increase demand for the crops produced at Noble Orchard, and has both opened and strengthened ties with nearby schools. Laurie, who happens to be a trained nutritionist, has been able to reach out and create a number of these

partnerships personally. One such partnership extends into Shasta County, where local teacher Steve Westebay’s organization, Happy Valley Fresh Fruit Company, has partnered with Noble Orchard Co. to bring farm fresh produce directly to student lunches. His program extends from northern Shasta County to as far south on Interstate-5 as Woodland. Over the last century, Noble Orchard has evolved significantly but has remained true to its roots, and we’re glad to report
that the commitment has paid off. Now producing over sixteen apple varieties including Pippin, Jonathan, Red Delicious, Fuji, Winesap, Rome, Granny Smith, Pink Lady, Golden Delicious, Black Twig, Arkansas Black, Colville Blanc, Newtown Pippin, Golden Russet, Morris Seedling (an original Paradise variety), and Rhode Island Greening, Noble Orchard has cemented itself in the local agricultural hall of fame as one of the longest running farms in the area. With a retail front that sells all of
the above alongside apple butter, apple cider, persimmons, peaches, nectarines, mandarins and oranges, this little slice of heaven is a must visit for anyone with a sweet tooth. Better yet, it’s also an excellent way to satisfy children who share in the same affliction without the need for processed sugars or high calorie snacks. Three generations of the Noble family have proved that healthy can also be successful, and for that, amongst many other reasons, we are proud to call them one of our favorite farms around.

Blue Room Theater:
God of Carnage by Aveed Khaki
Though we’ve loved each and every show that we’ve had the pleasure of experiencing at Chico’s Blue Room Theater, there are times when certain shows go above and beyond what we expect when purchasing a ticket. The Blue Room theater serves a number of purposes, one of which, of course, is to act as a staging ground for local aspiring actors to hone their craft through onstage practice. When local actors return to Chico, having seen success on the national stage, we feel that the experience is particularly worthy of merit; so is the case with the upcoming premier: God of Carnage. Originally launched in London to huge critical acclaim, God of Carnage transferred to New York City in 2009. Here, it stood as a transitionary vehicle for high-profile, on-screen actors like James Gandolfini, and brought some of the best and brightest on-screen actors to the Broadway stage. After winning the Tony Award for Best Play on Broadway in 2009, the show continued to enjoy a long run with several new casts before opening its doors to other venues. In May of 2011, during the Blue Room’s annual outdoor theater and music festival, The Butcher Shop, producer Fred Stuart spoke with a number of members from the cast and creative team who had already expressed interest in launching the show at the Blue Room. After a number of
months working on the idea, the group solidified the dates and cast in May of 2012. As a complete and total success on the East Coast, we have no doubt that it will be just as successful here, in Northern California. The cast is made up of four actors with strong ties to Chico, each with a name that you’d probably recognize. Chico local and Chico High School graduate, Amanda Detmer, famous for her role in the cult classic comedy Saving Silverman, as well as Final Destination, the Majestic, and the tv show What About Brian will star as Veronica. The play also stars Johnny Lancaster as Victoria’s husband, Michael, Daniela Mastropietro stars as Annette and Michael Gannon as her husband, Alan. The story follows the two couples whose sons were in a schoolyard brawl, and the comedy of social errors that ensues when each tries to resolve the situation as “adults.” The play was recently adapted into the movie, Carnage, and if the movie’s script is any indication of what the play is like, the audience should expect a hilarious show full of empathic embarrassment and discomfort for the characters on stage. We, for one, cannot wait to see it. God of Carnage will premier at the Blue Room Theater on January 16th and will take center stage until January 26th. For tickets, visit the website below.

North State Symphony:
Experience the Season by Aveed Khaki
If there’s one thing to be said for Chico State’s North State Symphony, it’s that they most certainly know how to put on a great show. On Friday, December 14th, the North State Symphony packed St. John’s Catholic Church in Chico for a Christmas concert that was dynamic, soothing, and undeniably perfect for the time of year. As they wove their way through classical Christmas favorites, the crowd quietly hummed alongside the voices of soloists Dara Scholz and Molly Mahoney, in eager anticipation of the special sing-a-long portion listed at the end of the show’s program. At intermission, New Clairvaux provided a sampling of their exquisite Tempranillo and Viognier releases, served by a familiar local face and friend of the magazine, Shawn Volland. Throughout the cafeteria, visitors exchanged hellos with friends and those who quietly sat next to them throughout the first half of the show. Conversation continued into sharing favorite parts of the performance and the memories that each Christmas selection conjured
up, which naturally led to laughter, and finally respectful sighs in remembrance of years since passed. The lights turned off and back on again, signaling the start of the second half; everyone said their quick goodbyes and good-to-meet-yous and vanished in a flurry, back into the church. The second half of the show was even more electric than the first. Conductor Kyle Wylie Pickett swung his hands up in perfect rhythm, guiding the orchestra through a number of modern Christmas treasures and with each one, the growing smiles of all in attendance. The show reached its climax and finale with the long awaited sing-a-long portion of the program. The crowd burst into song, and the church echoed with their excitement. As bodies swayed in perfect unison throughout the pews, it was clear to see the importance of music, and to an even greater degree live music, to all of us. The sheer power to bring people together in perfect harmony was not lost on a single soul that evening and we felt blessed to be in attendance.
Though you may have missed the Christmas special above, it’s never too late to experience the symphony. Plan to attend the North State Symphony’s upcoming shows throughout the winter and spring seasons this new year, and keep an eye on our Facebook page at www.Facebook. com/upgradedliving for free tickets to the shows!
