Oops! Every once in awhile we get something a bit wrong in the magazine; sometimes it's printing last month's date on the cover, captioning a photo with the phrase "caption caption caption", or improperly spelling antidisestablishmentarianism. Unfortunately, these are potential pitfalls in running a monthly magazine. Most of these are not needing of correction in the following issue, but when we miss giving credit where credit is due, that's a different matter entirely. In the last issue, the photo for our wondrous woman article was provided by none other than Chico's Shannon Rosan of Shannon Rosan Photography, and unfortunately we missed her byline. It was a wonderful photo, and the rave comments we've received on it prove just that. You have our apologies Shannon!

In His Memory A Project to Save Lives
by Alexa Benson-Valavanis There was a shy fall breeze as Dan and his son Alex meandered around downtown Chico. They talked, as they so often did, about Alex’s life and the plans peeking out above his horizon. Dan provided the sort of wisdom fathers do about looming decisions. He offered a gentle yet anchored understanding that however massive the decisions felt now, with time, they could be sorted out. Alex and his father walked for quite awhile that day. The sun graciously took its time to set, and although things were not perfect, they had each other. Days later Alex was gone. As I walked into Dan and Joan’s home, my heart ached. I knew the death of a child wasn’t a grief I could understand nor fathom, nevertheless, I was there to offer what support I could. Dan told me about that long walk and so many other memories the family now clung to. Alex’s life had been filled with tremendous joys, as well as, the challenges. They wanted to talk about ways to honor their son’s life as they found ways to carry on. A few months later The Alex Project was created; its dedicated mission to prevent youth suicide. In a successful first endeavor, The Alex Project forged partnerships with outside nonprofits making text messaging to Crisis Hotlines an option for our local youth in crisis. When Alex took his life, texting a Crisis Hotline was not an option. It takes only a glance at a teenager to realize texting is not a communication preference, but the norm. As Dan puts it, “we can’t expect our children to change their communication style when they are in crisis and trying to find help. We must change how we hear them.” Each day when I get to the Community Foundation, I start by offering a few moments to Alex and the work of saving lives we do in his memory. 9

“I like to tell people that I was born on Wall Street. Then I tell them it was in an apartment in Downtown Chico,” says Jack Lutz with a twinkle in his eye. He and his younger brother, Eugene, were raised by their father. His ancestors came here from Missouri and his aunt, Thankful Lewis, was captured by the natives out on Williams Road near present-day Butte College. Her two brothers did not escape, but Thankful got away near Humboldt Road and lived to tell the story. Jack's first job was with Tom Skelly at age 9 - the almond harvester was pulled by a 20-horse team and the sheep's wool left oil all over his feet and clothes when he stomped it down. Jack had a real Western childhood. His father worked for Archie Bennet, whom Jack accompanied once on a cattle drive between Nord/Cana to Butte Meadows. He remembers that Tom Mix came to Chico with the circus, held in the empty lot that soon became the original site of Enloe Hospital. And there was an Armistice Day parade in 1935 where he saw Civil War Veterans dressed proudly in their uniforms when he was 10 years old. The one-room schoolhouse in Cana was supervised by a teacher that played Cops & Robbers with the kids and required their help push-starting his Model A toward his girlfriend teaching school in Nord. Eventually, the Lutz family moved to Chico. Every Saturday, at the Panama Café, they bought three meals (soup/salad, main course, and pie) - for $1.04. After a show, the boys ate hamburgers from the Sandwich Inn after watching them cook through the window: 6 large burgers for 25 cents. Their father played poker at Charlie Fascino's saloon and, if he was winning, the boys would get a milkshake. Otherwise, they would all hurry home. They got their hair cut for 40 cents by a nice Japanese woman who had a shop near Upper Crust Bakery. Jack Lutz never thought he would go to college. He dropped out of school at age 17 to serve in the Army, campaigning in Europe (including Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge), Asia, and serving occupational duty in Japan. After WWII, Jack got married (eventually having 4 daughters), earned a living, and received his teaching credentials (1951) and Master's (1962) from Chico State through the GI Bill. He transitioned through JV Football Coach, Principal of the Elementary School, and an active role in passing the Bond Issue in Durham then returned to Chico in 1966, where he wrote for federal grant projects until 1978. He finally worked as Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Butte County for about 10 years. Jack sees Chico's kindness and notes how it has grown in medical services, artistic participation, and farming. He enjoys spending most mornings at Bidwell Park Golf Course with close friends: “I think it's one of the prettiest courses I play on and it's a real asset to the community.” He is about to celebrate 50 years of membership with the Masonic Lodge, which has influenced him to volunteer at Enloe Hospital and the American Cancer Society. What fun to know this Local Legend.

Rainmaker: Chris Friedland by Aveed Khaki
photograph by Erin Wenham
There are few names in Chico as synonymous with success as Chris Friedland, and even fewer when you consider the short length of time it took for him to attain such notoriety. A selfproclaimed toilet salesman, Chris started his initial online company, Faucet Direct, with friend David Boctor after having the idea rejected by a well-known west coast plumbing company. Guaranteed that buyers would never buy faucets online, Chris and David set out as Chico State students hellbent on proving that they would. The site was launched in October 2000 and raked in $30,000 during its first month. The site continued to attract more customers monthafter-month until the two decided to branch out, opening HandleSets.com, LightingDirect.com, ToolsDirect.com, and a host of other direct-to-door home improvement stores to satisfy demand. The end result? A multitude of product specific stores in need of a place to call home. In 2009, the company acquired a smaller competitor who happened to own the domain name Build.com. Seemingly overnight, the new brand was born and Build.com became home to each of the product specific stores Chris had launched over the prior nine years. Three years later, Build.com has grown into the largest online only home improvement retail store in the world. What once grossed $30,000 in its first month, now grosses $30,000,000 monthly and those numbers are continuing to climb month-aftermonth. Better yet, the company is continuing to expand, both at home and abroad, recently launching Floormall.com and a new site and brand in the United Kingdom. Build.com’s headquarters still remain in Chico though, and Chris doesn’t plan on changing that anytime soon. In the coming months, the company will leave its longtime offices near the Chico Airport and move to the Hegan Lane industrial complex, bringing new life, vitality and traffic to the north Chico area. Currently employing 350 people, the company projects to employ 550 within the next 30 months, creating hundreds of new local jobs that in turn will further boost the local economy. Chris continues to look to the future, determined to reach his goal of building Chico’s first billion dollar internet company and garnering the title of the most successful toilet salesperson around. His aspirations are anything but shy as he convincingly maintains that it will happen within the next five years. The positive effect of reaching this goal on our local economy would be staggering to say the least, and we, for one, are excited to watch it unfold. After all, there’s something that we can’t help but love about a successful local business born from an underdog story, but when that story involves toilet humor, well, that’s a story we simply can’t pass up.

There is little about the medical field that Dr. Jeffrey Lobosky is naïve of. As an alumnus of Notre Dame University and UC Irvine Med School, with twenty-eight years in practice as a local neurosurgeon and the current codirector of the neuro trauma intensive care unit at Enloe, there is also little he has not experienced. From doctors who function more as pharmaceutical dealers than physicians to lackluster insurance legislation that visibly doesn’t aim to help citizens in their time of need, it is clear to see that the old days of frontier medicine have long since been left behind. And while many people will vehemently point a finger at one specific culprit or the other, most participants in the blame game lack the necessary experience (or willingness) to defend the more obvious answer, that everyone is to blame; Dr. Lobosky does just that. In his recently published book, It’s Enough to Make You Sick: The Failure of American Health Care and a Prescription for the Cure, Dr. Lobosky navigates through a list of suspects including pharmaceutical companies, doctors, lawyers, special interest groups, insurance companies, hospitals, and even the general public, to unearth the truth behind each group’s failures and how these failures contributed to the continued deterioration of what has long been regarded as one of the greatest healthcare systems in the world. The truth, as he exposes in his book, is that our system is actually well below that of most other industrialized countries and since we are all collectively responsible for the current state of the system, there must also be a collective solution. Unlike most books written on our country’s healthcare system, his actually proves to be an entertaining read rather than simply judgmental. Written in the prose of conversation between himself and the general public, the book provides anecdotes from his twenty-eight years as a surgeon that most readers will find they can relate to. Best of all, rather than just detailing the ways in which the system has failed, he also suggests potential fixes, a number of which begin right in your own home. Whether you find yourself completely disenchanted with the current healthcare system or would simply like to educate yourself further as to what everyone has recently been talking about, grab a copy of his book and prepare to never see our healthcare system in quite the same way again. It can be found locally at Lyon’s Books in Downtown Chico and Barnes & Noble or purchased via your Nook, Kindle or iPad.

Rejuvenate at Rejuvené by Michael Burke
Before
Over the past months, you’ve read my articles on beauty tips and I hope you’ve been able to use them. As the writer of this section, though, I feel that sharing my most recent experience is equally important as it may help you in your search for your best face. With the American male grooming market now worth $3.5 billion, men seem to be changing their attitude about a number of issues that previously seemed to be reserved for women. Feeling the need to look youthful and appear dynamic well into our 40s, 50s, and 60s has led to men rethinking their attitudes towards supplements, diet, exercise, facial care products and cosmetic procedures; increasingly wanting to change the things they don’t like or want to see in the mirror. Statistics available from the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic surgery show that cosmetic and/ or plastic surgery is becoming increasingly popular with men as a way to deal with image maintenance and change. I recently embarked on a journey to look and feel more confident. I’m approaching my mid 40s. I take good care of my physical being, but I was watching time creep across my face. I decided I wanted to do something about it, so I made an appointment at Rejuvené with Dr. Richey. On my first visit I met with Renee Dolan. Looking tired, drawn, and with my skin lackluster at best due to sun damage, we decided to start with a series of photofacials and Botox. Renee introduced me to my transformation guru, Jean. Jean is a registered nurse at Rejuvené, working alongside Dr. Richey. Renee and Jean escorted me to my treatment room and after www.rejuvene.net | (530) 342-8295 18

After
my full evaluation we laid out the set of procedures that would transform my “before” photo to the “after” photo I sought. My first procedure was a photofacial. Photofacial is a generic term for skin treatment that uses light based technology. My first treatment was to be an IPL (intense pulsed light) which is a type of laser treatment. IPL can treat a variety of skin conditions such as brown spots, broken capillaries, spider veins and facial redness; considering I had the majority of these conditions, I was so excited to begin. I have had 3 IPL treatments since; my skin hasn’t had this glow in years. My skin tone is even, the texture is smooth and my pores are nonexistent. Those pesky brown spots have disappeared and best of all there was no downtime. Next up was a Botox treatment with Dr. Richey. A wonderful man with an amazing sense of humor, his explanation of the treatment and benefits provided me the confidence I needed and put my mind at ease, because let’s face it, I was a nervous wreck. Fast forward to one week later. I woke up and looked in my mirror; my face was positively glowing. I haven’t woken up in the morning without sleep face in too many years to count. My brown spots were gone, my skin tone was so even and it just literally glowed. I was a happy man. The results of both treatments have gone well past my expectations. For those of you men and women out there reading this feeling like you might want your “tune up,” Please call Rejuvené and make your appointment. You will not regret it.

Contrary to popular belief, fashion in the north valley extends far beyond UGG boots, mini-skirts, bro tanks and Wrangler jeans. In fact, our little pocket of northern California has some of the best boutique clothing stores around. Over the next few pages, we’ll introduce you to three of our favorites: Labelz, A Bit Unruly, and Kreations. Each boutique has its own flavor, and we think you’ll agree, that between the three of them, you’ll undoubtedly find the perfect summer wardrobe.

Art-Felt Flowers by Melissa Snow
It is easy for any designer
to work and design a space with an unlimited budget. The true test is when you have a very limited one; try $350 for a master bedroom. That was our challenge for this year’s Frugal House. This event takes “thinking outside the box” to a whole new level. Because we were working with such a tight budget, putting on our creative hats was very necessary. I ended up finding some fabric stretchers at a secondhand store which got me thinking... wall art. Because the Frugal House will be rented out for weddings, our room had a modern flower theme throughout. Here are the steps to create these fabulous felt flowers.
Step One
Fabric stretchers
Step Three
Stretching the fabric
As I said before, check your secondhand stores for them, and if you strike out Jo-Ann Fabrics & Crafts always has them. I used two sets of three different sizes.
I laid the stretcher ring over the fabric and simply followed the shape, leaving an inch around the frame. Lay the fabric in place and stretch the outer ring over the top, trim the sides.
Step Two
Making the flowers
Pick your fabric
I chose felt because I loved the weight of it and it was the perfect color of gray for the room; it also helps with the shape of the flowers. I chose to do half in the gray with white flowers and half in the opposite.
Step Four
This is a bit time consuming but so easy. Simply cut out whatever shape petal you would like and depending on the look you’ll need either 4 or five petals. I made every flower a bit different in size. Once you have your fabric cut, simply weave stitch your petals and pull the string. Secure it by simply pulling both ends together and knotting it twice. Once all of your flowers are ready, you can use hot glue to attach them in place.
Another great thing about this project is that because they hardly weigh anything, a simple nail does the job to hang them on the wall. This everyday art project costs under $10; you can’t beat that for wall art. Until next time, happy crafting!!! 173 East 3rd Ave Chico | (530) 345-9215 24

Commercial Insurance for the Family Business by John Sweeney
Making sure to have the right coverage in place for a business in case of an unexpected loss is extremely important for the local family-owned business. Generally, the family business is the largest asset that a family has. One uncovered loss could result in losing it all. It is very important to meet with your licensed insurance agent on an annual basis to review your coverage and needs; making sure that you are properly protected from loss and have adequately protected your risk. When you sit down to meet, you should be asking the following questions: Do I have proper coverage for my building (requirements vary depending on if you own the building or lease it)? Do I have enough coverage for the Business Personal Property? Do I have adequate Business Income coverage? Do I have Employment Practice Liability coverage? Do I have Workers’ Compensation coverage? Do I have Comprehensive and Catastrophic Health Insurance Coverage? Do I have a Perpetuation Plan in place? If a Partnership or Corporation, do I have a buy-out plan in place if needed?
A loss affecting any of the areas indicated above can cause serious concerns to the viability of keeping the family business intact and strong. Your licensed Insurance Agent can assist you in addressing all of the issues raised above. In doing so, you can ensure that your family owned business remains strong for generations to come. ave you ever thought that having a well-decorated space would cost way too much money? Many people believe that's the truth, but North State interior designers are seeking to change that idea. Now in its fourth year, Frugal House is a fundraiser for the North State Symphony. This year's house is a 3,800 square-foot Vineyard Estate with two stories and upgrades added by twelve designers during just 10 weeks' time, between April 1 and June 21. All of the designs incorporate refurbished and refinished furniture and other donated materials to create a designer look throughout the home. Each designer received an additional budget between $50 and $500, according to room size, in order to add the final touches to each room. Opening night was on June 21 at 6pm for a crowd that enjoyed a gourmet dinner provided by Monk's Wine Lounge and music by local groups, Decades and Los Caballitos. Every item in the home was available for purchase, and everyone in attendance was ready for the tour and the anticipation while bidding on their favorite items. Just inside the front door, the entry area features a brick water feature, complete with trickling water sounds, a spigot, and a chandelier. While the design may be reminiscent of a fireplace, it is truly a water feature by original design. Fresh Start Interiors, painted the original red brick a universal shade of white and Christine MacShane created a wall mural featuring the home owners' logo. This home is destined to be an event center by 2013. The chocolate brown background tone on the walls spills over into the parlor where designers from The Address achieved a tea party atmosphere from basic furniture pieces like an oldfashioned tea cart, a cocktail table built around an old wooden palette, and curtain rods made from tree branches and suspended with rope. One fun detail added to the parlor is a set of lampshades created from coffee filters. The twin chandeliers were donated by Build.com. Working as apprentices to The Address, Essential Interiors gave the cocktail lounge a bohemian vibe with gauzy material draped across the ceiling and the jewel tones in shades

of purple and blue. The chandelier donated by Build.com, combined with the DIY fireplace screen, adds a touch of the American 1940s to the room and the pair of newly-reupholstered couches provide plenty of seating for this large space. The adjacent kitchen was a delight for Rebecca Rose Interiors and Cindy Vogel, who achieved a high-end look with donated materials. The neutral tones are calming and tie the kitchen to the color palette in the parlor. During opening night, there was an olive display set inside the kitchen cabinet and orange accents were placed about the room. This is a kitchen that caters to entertaining a crowd. Returning to the entry leads to the media room, to the left of the front door. Of course, there is a large screen that is the focus of the room, but Deverie Jarrett also added some special details including a repurposed Asian screen formed into a coffee table, a concrete countertop for the corner bar, and a whimsical umbrella installation. The entry also leads to the stairs. At the top is the landing and veranda where Nancy White Designs brought the outdoors in with a bench just inside the French doors and some seating outside on the veranda. The guest bedroom featured a crème background with accents in shades of blue including turquoise, royal, and sky. Home Ec added a delightful touch of cute romance by placing artwork of two colorful birds seemingly in love as they cuddled over the bed. On the other side of the landing, the master bedroom was simple yet elegant in the small details: a doily-covered Chinese lantern, pleats at the top of the curtains, and ruching along the comforter. This room was designed by Dolce Home Design and included a few DIY features that have appeared in Upgraded Living. Finally, the master bathroom was completely remodeled by Melinda's Interiors in collaboration with Lawrence Adams Consulting. Many items were purchased from Goodwill and the rest were donated. A beachy seashell atmosphere encourages spa-like relaxation and the orientation of the tile pattern alternates to add interest in an otherwise neutral room. Overall, this year's Frugal House had an eclectic Bohemian Chic atmosphere. Homeowner Robin Flores revealed that her inspiration is the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas. She and her husband camped out in the Lounge/Kitchen area of their home for five years, waiting for the landscaping to mature before they invited designers and the public. Be sure to look for events happening at the Vineyard Estate in 2013.

Succulent Summer by Courtney Paulson
I’ve been trying to ride my bike as much as possible these days, and as I ride around Chico, I notice the Crape Myrtle trees have begun to bloom. Once they begin blooming I realize they are everywhere! There is a reason for that. Crape Myrtle shrubs and trees love the full blasting sun and heat of the north valley. In fact, they thrive in it! Our summers can be so intense but there are an endless variety of plants that can stand up to the heat. Take Hibiscus Syriacus, also known as the Rose of Sharon. It too thrives in the heat and sun. It is a real stunner in the garden, providing gorgeous blooms and attracting hummingbirds to your yard. Succulents are a favorite in my yard and can tolerate the heat. Aloe, Agave, and Sempervivums are some wonderful choices. Sedums in particular are prevalent in my landscape because the colors and variations can make beautiful natural tapestries that
require little care. The vegetable garden would be unable to produce a delicious bounty if it were not for the heat of the summer. I feel a little better when I remind myself of this on those days that I am feeling tired of the 100 degree temps. I always recommend using organic fertilizer, especially this time of year. If synthetic fertilizers are used on your plants, green growth is pushed at an unnaturally rapid rate so your plants thirst for even more water. Planting trees and shrubs this time of year is not recommended. It is hard to get plants established when conditions are so harsh, but if you just can’t wait, it can be done successfully with some extra care. Enjoy the heat everyone! It’s all part of the north valley lifestyle.

Bugging Out! by Marc Wesley CTSP
Often, we spend time in our yards and we start becoming curious about the health of our trees and shrubs. From bugs to leaf color to soil consistency, it can be hard to determine a plant’s health without a little background knowledge. When you look at your tree and see an insect don't become obsessed with synthetic pesticides trying to rid yourself of pests. A lot of insects are beneficial to the ecosystems that exist in our trees. If you kill the good along with the bad, then there will be an
absence of natural predators to defend our trees when the damaging pests return. Try using ladybugs. They are a natural predator and eco-friendly way to control pests such as aphids. If you are seeing foliage that is wilting and chlorotic, or have bark that is cracking and peeling, then you could be having a problem with sunburn. If you or a neighbor have recently removed a tree or if you had a tree trimmed and more sun is coming through than the tree is used to, it will get
dehydrated from lack of water and excess sun, resulting in sunburn. If you have a white powdery mildew on your trees and shrubs then the chances are you have a lot of shade and moisture without a lot of air circulation. This can be fixed by having your trees thinned for proper air and light penetration. There are lots of worries out there however you can rest assured as long as I'm around I will do my best to research any problem you have and help to find a acceptable remedy.

Perk Up Your Garden
Get your grounds at Bidwell Perk, 664 East 1st Avenue Chico, CA
by Gloria Stevens
So you planted that perfect spring garden and summer has quickly followed. Undoubtedly, those perfect perennials are starting to feel the heat from these hot summer months, and just like our bodies, they’re probably in need of some serious care to make it through the one-hundred-plus degree temperatures unscathed. Plants have the highest demand for nitrogen nutrition during this season so it’s best to keep a watchful eye out for changes in their outward appearance. If your bloomers are starting to look a little pale and unsightly, there’s a high percentage chance that they’re running low on fuel. Luckily, a nitrogen pick-me-up is fast, easy and best of all free at coffee shops around town like Bidwell Perk in the form of coffee grounds. This wonderful soil amendment can be used as a plant snack as well as a barrier for unwanted pests. 36
Amending the soil: Whether you are planting, replanting or fertilizing coffee grounds will provide plenty of phosphorus potassium, magnesium, copper and nitrogen for the planting locale and will maintain a balanced environment for some time to come. It is often best to mix coffee grounds directly in with the soil before placing the plant in its new home, but after the fact works fine as well. If planting or replanting, utilize 1 part coffee grounds to every three parts soil to maintain a 25% / 75% mixture. If you’re using coffee grounds as fertilizer, simply sprinkle it around the plant prior to watering. Create a bug barrier: Coffee grounds are highly acidic, and hence are kryptonite for many of your garden’s most destructive foes like slugs and snails. Create an impenetrable circular barrier a few inches in radius from the center of your plant using coffee grounds, drive a small stick into the ground and yell “YOU SHALL NOT PASS” at any snail that dares challenge your authority. (Sorry, we recently watched Lord of the Rings... again.) Compost, it does a garden good: When it comes to gardening, our pocket of northern California has some of the best soil around, but keeping that soil balanced is of utmost importance. Compost is known as black gold for gardens as it does just that. For best results in compost, purchase a compost bin from a local nursery like Magnolia Gift and Garden and get started by creating a two-to-one ratio of brown-to-green matter. Brown matter is made up of elements like hay, sawdust, straw or old leaves. Green matter is made up of elements like coffee grounds. Pour six inches of brown matter into your compost heap, followed by three inches of coffee grounds and repeat until the compost pile is full. The brown and green matter will naturally decompose to create the kind of soil your mom only dreamt of.

Selling Your Home in the Summer Months by Effie Khaki, REALTOR® (530) 514-3334
Over the years, my clients have expressed considerable interest in exactly what they can do to sell their home quickly and for the best possible value during the summer months. During winter, I’ve always found that homes sell based on warmth, livability, and atmosphere; if it smells like cookies are baking in the kitchen, your home is practically a shoe-in. During the summer months, potential buyers tend to act a bit differently though. Two things seem to come into hyperfocus during these hot months: design and cleanliness. Whether it’s due to the ample amount of natural lighting that flows through the windows around the house or simply the fact that people tend to have more time on their hands to pay attention to the finer details during this season, it is clear that design and cleanliness reign supreme. Below, you’ll find a couple of ideas that can help guarantee the best possible return on your investment over the summer months.
1
Clean your carpets
Carpets provide a significant level of warmth to any home, but they also provide a trap for dirt, dust, grime, allergens, and odors. In fact, some of the strongest odors in your house don’t come from the kitchen at all, they come from the carpets, and if you wear shoes in your house, you can be sure the carpet is in need of cleaning. Spot cleaning can be done yourself, but for larger areas, I would recommend hiring a professional. When you factor in cost, convenience and thoroughness, the price difference between doing it yourself and hiring a professional like CleanriteBuildrite is about the same.
2
Renovate and upgrade
Granite has become incredibly affordable over the past few years as have tile and options for cabinetry. Do a survey of your home and think about the areas that tend to carry the most wear. Grout between tiles tends to get discolored and its porous surface has likely trapped a few forgotten spills. Replacing this with a granite slab can be incredibly affordable and will significantly change the look of a home.
Cabinetry, especially non-custom cabinetry that comes with a standard cul-de-sac home, can wear within ten to twenty years after the home was built. Reface or replace the items that either make the home look worn or unsightly.
3
Hire a consultant
Though you may not have hired a consultant to help decorate your home in the first place, hiring one now is a no-brainer. An interior designer can visit and quickly provide tips on arranging your home, or simply give them the reigns and let them do what they do best. Let them know you’re selling your home and that clean design is a must. My recommendation? Melissa Snow at Dolce Home in Chico.
4
Turn the AC on!
It may seem like a frivolous expense, but believe me, temperature makes a huge difference when showing a home during the summer months. Cool your house to around seventy-five degrees before your potential buyers arrive; the temperature shift will be a welcome visit to any and all who enter. Plus, it’s a great way to show off just how well your AC unit works.
Cleanrite-Buildrite’s Carpet Cleaning 101 The carpets in our homes are great collectors and filter traps for every type of dirt, allergen and stain. Keeping them clean is just as important as cleaning the clothes that we wear. Keep that carpet so fresh and so clean (clean): Prepare the Area: Rake your carpet before cleaning and vacuuming. Raking stands carpet fibers up straight and pulls the dirt to the surface for a deeper cleaning process. It also loosens the dirt that is matted down into the carpet from foot traffic.
Obtain the Proper Tools: Purchase enzyme based products that help break down urine, dirt, milk, juice and food stains. Never use bleach as it will burn and discolor your carpet. If urine is at fault, make sure to lift the rug and treat both sides of the carpet. Replace the pad below if necessary. Treat the Stain: Using cold water, blot or dab the stain to lift it. Never use warm water and do not rub or agitate the stain as it will encourage it to set. If you need help, don’t hesitate to call! Many carpet warranties require professional, deep steam/high temperature extraction methods to maintain your carpet life. Consult the company you purchased your carpet from to better understand your warranty and decrease your chances of voiding it! If you need professional help, remember to give us a call.

Is There a Correlation between the Market and Presidential Elections? by Renée Michel, MBA

Market cycles and presidential elections are both regularly occurring events. The question most often asked is whether or not there is a correlation between presidential elections and the market? Hartford Mutual Fund Company compiled the annual S&P 500 returns during election years from 1925 to 2011. The results show that during election years, the index’s performance varied widely – with annual returns as high as 43.6% and as low as -37% - but election year returns were generally as good as any other. In fact, the average return during the last 21 presidential election years is 11.0%, very close to the 11.8% average return of all years between1925-2011. The S&P 500 average annual return was negative in only four election years – in two, a Democrat was in office; in two a Republican was. In those four election years, two presidential races included an incumbent, while two didn’t. While there seems to be no direct correlation between market cycles and presidential elections, the past long-term trend is clear: onward and upward. It’s important to keep in mind that politicians, especially presidential candidates, have a 4-year focus. We, the people of this great nation, on the other hand, may need to plan for the next 40 years or more. Don’t let the election season “noise” interrupt your investment strategy and long-term goals. Index past performance is not indicative of future results. The S&P 500 is a composite of the largest 500 companies in the United States. The index is unmanaged and unavailable for direct investment. Healing with Yoga: Dr. Paula Barros & the Clear Creek Healing Center by Aveed Khaki
Chances are you’re already acquainted with the work of Dr. Paula Barros. In fact, if you’ve ever traveled southbound on Clark Road from Paradise to Oroville, you’ve probably experienced a bit of the calming effect she tends to have on people. Visible to southbound traffic, the “Breathe” sign placed just outside her property’s entrance is a simple reminder that stress release can be as easy as a deep breath. When it comes to the often congested and always meandering Clark Road, this little sign ends up being a godsend for passersby. Dr. Barros is no stranger to these twists and turns; her life has been full of them, and if it wasn’t for learning the importance of the word “Breathe,” we probably wouldn’t be writing this profile on her today. Born and raised in Oakland, California, Paula moved to Chico in 1970 to attend CSU, Chico. On a trip back home, she had her first introduction to yoga and fell head-over-heels for it. Instead of returning to school, Paula packed her things and decided to pursue the teachings of yoga full-time, joining the Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco and quickly working her way toward a certified teacher’s position. She traveled to India with the pioneer of Iyengar yoga, B.K.S. Iyengar, and studied yoga’s self-healing principles first hand. She returned to the States four months later to begin putting her newfound knowledge to use. Some months later, on a trip to visit a friend in Montana, Paula fell asleep at the wheel on the highway, overcorrected upon waking up and sent her car barreling into a nearby rock face. The impact was so great that it drove her steering wheel straight through her leg, breaking it in seven different locations and shattering her femur. Paula was transported to the hospital, where she underwent immediate surgery and was met with horrible news when she awakened. According to her doctor, she would be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of her life and even worse, there was a strong possibility she might lose her leg. However, Paula refused to believe this. Instead, she traveled home and began the long road to recovery. Paula immediately started using the same self-healing principles she learned in India to supplement the multitude of surgeries needed to rehabilitate her leg. Combining eastern and western medicine, Paula pushed forward through the limb lengthening and shortening procedures needed to allow her to place both feet securely on the ground. Finally, after 27 months of tireless effort, Paula made a full recovery. Through her rehabilitation, she found the calling to help others in a similar situation and earned a degree as a Doctor of Chiropractic in 1985. She opened Clear Creek Healing Center in 1987, offering healing and rehabilitation through both yoga and chiropractic care. Since opening the doors to Clear Creek Healing Center 25 years ago, Dr. Barros has helped countless individuals with the same selfhealing principles that allowed her to achieve a miraculous recovery. She currently teaches yoga in Chico on Friday mornings and in her studio at Clear Creek Healing Center throughout the week. To learn more about all of her services and programs, including yoga therapy, teacher training and retreats, and to review her yoga schedule, visit www.clearyoga.com to see what this alternative form of healing can do for you.

A Matter of Fat
by Toby Schindelbeck Let’s face it, no matter how hard we try, we all have those last few stubborn pounds of body fat that just won’t go away in time for summer. In addition to a healthy workout routine, and a balanced nutrition program, which NUTRISHOP Chico provides for free to all our clients, there are a few must-haves when it comes to dropping those pounds. First, you need to cleanse your internal organs of toxins that slow your metabolism and “gum up the works.” The easiest way to do that is with Chico’s best selling cleanse, Detoxin. This colon, liver, gall bladder and kidney cleanse is gentle enough to take every day, but strong enough to drop inches and pounds from your midsection that can’t be lost with diet and exercise. Getting rid of the undigested toxins that line the colon and cause bloating, weight gain, and a sluggish metabolism is a simple and effective way to drop weight and get a leaner waistline. Another safe weight-loss tool is Lipocor. This is an all-natural “healthy fat replacement system.” When fat is released into the blood from exercise, the GLA and CLA shrink those fat cells while the essential Omega-3 and 6 lipids take the place of the released body fat. The end result? Less body fat and smaller fat cells! In addition to the Detoxin and Lipocor, NUTRISHOP Chico carries a wide variety of other fat burners that are much more aggressive, like our best seller HYPERCOR. Stop by either of our locations for a detailed nutrition plan and we will assess your goals and fit you with the right supplements. Don’t forget to bring the coupon in this issue of Upgraded Living Magazine! NUTRISHOP (530) 898-1600 www.nutrishopchico.com 47

Iron Chef: Gary Jones by Aveed Khaki
photography by Erin Wenham
Chico has no shortage of wonderful chefs these days, but few that are as highly decorated and experienced in the culinary arts as Gary Jones, and he isn’t at all shy when it comes to proving it. Born and raised in the area, Gary is a third generation chef, taking after his father and grandfather who helped pioneer restaurants on the east coast. After high school, Gary moved to Las Vegas in pursuit of bigger and better opportunities, and quickly earned himself a position at Emeril Lagasse’s famous Delmonico Steakhouse. After a number of years honing his skills in the high-paced Vegas arena, he moved to Auburn and opened a traditional Italian trattoria where he worked as its executive chef, and finally moved once more last year after being offered the food and beverage director position at Heavenly Resort in Tahoe. The move to Tahoe was short-lived though, as while browsing the internet he came upon a restaurant for sale in the Chico area that had a specific place in his heart. The Gooney Bird, previously known as The Albatross, was the site of Gary’s high school prom dinner. Overcome with nostalgia and the chance to make a mark on the Chico food scene, he jumped at the opportunity and completed his purchase on June 1st, setting out to make a number of changes to this landmark Chico restaurant. Over the next few months, the old Albatross restaurant will change its name to Blue Flame Steakhouse and Seafood Grill, and see a gigantic facelift including a significantly expanded bar (six seats to sixteen seats) and brand new lounge area at the entrance. The menu will also see a complete revamp with a number of fantastic new dishes, beautifully complementing the old house favorites that have been chosen to remain onboard. From a crab-stuffed, prosciuttowrapped lobster tail set upon a mushroom risotto, topped with tomato champagne beurre blanc to the house specialty blackened ribeye set atop a bed of red garlic mashed potatoes and topped with cabernet butter and spicy tempura onions, there is no doubt that the new menu will quickly make a name for itself as one of the best in the north valley. Our favorite points of interest though, are the finer details of the new experience at Blue Flame Steakhouse and Grill. For starters, the room that housed the famed Albatross salad bar will be converted into a chef ’s table room, and made available to reservations for a custom four-course dining experience with the chef himself. Better yet, the restaurant refuses to use anything but the finest organic produce from local farms, grass fed beef from local ranches, free range chicken, and Gary guarantees that nothing in the restaurant is frozen except for the ice. When you taste the food, you won’t need
further convincing. We’re excited to see Gary bring his culinary genius to Chico; trust that one taste will prove that you will be too. Blue Flame Steakhouse and Grill is open from Tuesday thru Saturday with happy hours at the bar from 4:30pm - 7pm and 9pm - close. Reservations are suggested, and the chef asks for 48 hour notice on any major dietary restriction, as he is glad to accommodate any and all of them.

Business
Think of it as passing the baton by Nick Hanna
As a business owner, you are the lifeblood of your organization, the driving force behind its success. What will happen to your business if something happens to you? Do you have family members or other successors in line who will be able to pick up the reins? Will the business you worked so hard to build be able to continue and will your family be financially provided for? Many family businesses don’t survive past the second generation. Why?
No Qualified or Interested Family Member: Perhaps the children are too
young, uninterested, or lack the founder’s drive or skillset. Limited Access to Capital: After the passing of a business owner without life insurance, the business heirs are often left burdened with expenses and little access to the capital needed to pay them as well as continue the business. It is up to you set the planning wheels in motion. Here are a few ideas of how to begin: Clarify Your Goals: What would
you, as an owner, prefer? To work in the business for as long as possible? To provide for your children the lifestyle and status you have enjoyed? To reward key employees who have helped you build the business? Consider the Heirs: Who wants to, or has the ability to continue the firm? What are the feelings of the others? What training is taking place now? Appoint a Project Manager: You may want to give a professional the overall responsibility of researching the possible strategies and presenting recommendations for your consideration. In the end, a little planning can help ensure that your business and family continues to thrive for many years to come. Nick Hanna (CA/AR Ins. “My Mom has Dementia”
INTRODUCING
INVISIBLE HEARING SOLUTIONS *
Prices starting as low as $750 each!
by Crystal Craig
Working as the Community Relations Director for Prestige Assisted Living at Chico, I hear this frequently. Over 5 million Americans are struggling with Alzheimer’s or some level of dementia and the number is expected to grow exponentially over the next few years. Dementia affects memory and the ability to complete the everyday activities that we all take for granted. Simple tasks such as eating, dressing, and bathing become all too difficult for a person suffering from dementia. I’m honored and proud to have worked for Prestige over the last four years, as we are dedicated to not only finding a cure for Alzheimer’s and dementia, but also to providing support and care for those suffering with dementia and their family members. Our Memory Care Director, Dana McNabb has been with Prestige Assisted Living in Chico since we opened our doors in 1999. With her extensive knowledge, compassion, and experience, she is an expert in helping residents and families navigate through the difficult process of caring for a loved one with memory loss. Prestige continues to build our “Expressions” program which is largely influenced by David Troxel, Author of The Best Friend’s Approach to Alzheimer’s Care. Our program was internationally recognized in London, UK at the International Conference on Alzheimer’s. We believe a resident’s well being is directly related to how the resident feels and how he/ she interacts with the world around them. We have designed a program that makes our residents feel accepted, important, comfortable, and at home. If you or your loved one is suffering from Dementia, please call me for a complimentary tour. Most families I meet have given up the idea that their loved one’s quality of life can improve. Let me prove you wrong! You can contact me using the information below. Needham Studios Chico
Opened by Mick Needham in 1970, Needham Studios in downtown Chico has been the definitive stained glass studio in the north valley since. Recently joined by sons Aaron and Evan, Mick’s studio’s capabilities have expanded even further. Known for their undeniable precision and attention to detail by customers both near and far, the Needham family has created a permanent stamp on the local art community.
Wagon Wheel
Feather Falls
Oroville
Oroville
Purchased in 1981 by Dick and Dona Butler, the Wagon Wheel Market has now been family owned and operated for thirty-one years. While raising three sons, the couple worked twelve hours a day, seven days a week to grow the location and further their inventory of quality products. The market has a full-service meat counter and carries fresh seafood, locally grown produce, fresh baked goods, and California craft beers and wines. Stop in for a shopping trip and don’t forget to take home one of their award winning smoked meats, marinated tri-tips, bacon, ham, sausages or smoked turkey!
Offering over 33 miles of trail hiking and beautiful views of some of the highest waterfalls in the United States, Feathers Falls is a great place to spend some warm summer days. These trails bring hikers through the tall silhouettes of cedar and ponderosa pines, along rushing creeks, and close enough to the plunging falls to feel the mist as you hike. During the spring and into the summer, wildflowers are scattered over the breathtaking terrain. Hikers can climb to the top at a little under 3,000 feet in elevation. Many of these trails are used by cyclists and equestrians as well.
Boss Burger Oroville
Originally opened by John and Patricia Bos, John and Barbara Martin decided to continue the Bos family’s burger legacy in 1980. Thirty-two years later, Boss Burger is undoubtedly the local favorite for juicy, charbroiled burgers and an order of fries that they guarantee you won’t find outdone anywhere else. Stop on by and make sure you bring an appetite!
Merlo Park
Sterling City (not quite Butte County, but we think you’ll forgive us) A must-see (and do for that matter), Merlo Park is 20 acres of gorgeous pines, cedars, firs, and oaks as well as deer and birds and relaxing creeks and ponds. If you live in Butte County or are just passing through, the park is a great place to take a hike or stretch tired travelled legs at the picnic areas, meadows or the bocce ball courts. The park was dedicated to Clotilde Merlo in August, 1987 by her son Harry Merlo, who was founding President of Lousiana-Pacific Corporation and was born in Sterling City in 1925. His mother was a WWII widow and was a huge part in his life. She died in 1962 and her memory lives on through this beautifully dedicated park.

Pita Pit Chico
An alternative to fast-food, this restaurant is a different experience for fresh thinking and healthy eating. It serves an array of veggies, meats and sauces in a pita bread wrap. It is a private company that was established in 2004 and has spread throughout college towns in California. The Dakofs, a Chico family own the Broadway location and serve up custom made pitas from breakfast to dinner to midnight snack time. Funky, fresh vegetable mascots cover the walls inside and being right in the hub of downtown Chico, it is enjoyed by many people in the community.
Reimer Pest and Weed Chico
Born and raised in Chico, Rick Reimer launched Reimer Pest and Weed after earning his agriculture degree in 1983. Focused on providing customers with the best possible service, the business quickly expanded from friends and family to a multi-county service radius. Nearly thirty years later, Rick now works alongside his two sons, Adam and Austin, providing weed abatement and pest control services to ten counties throughout California and Nevada while still maintaining the affordable, customeroriented service his friends and family came to love thirty years ago.
Rubys/ Red Fly Chico & Oroville
Opened in 2003 by Raine Day, Red Fly in Oroville has been providing men and women some of the area’s hottest contemporary clothing and accessories in the area. Housed in a historical downtown building originally built in 1857, this location has as much to appreciate in character as it does in clothing. Hot on the heels of Red Fly’s success, in 2005 Raine launched Ruby’s in Oroville and recently opened its sister store in Chico. Carrying brands like Free People, William Rast, Flying Tomato, and Anne Koplik, Ruby’s is a can’t miss on any fashionista’s local shopping list.
CocoAmatrice
Aonami
World-traveled chocolatiers, Clarice and Ken Smith opened the doors to CocoAmatrice in Paradise in November 2007. Originally Clarice’s idea, CocoAmatrice translates to “female lover of chocolate,” which, if you’ve ever met Clarice, you’d know is an extreme understatement. Family owned and operated, CocoAmatrice is a must visit for chocoholics and when it comes to finding the perfect chocolate to pair with wines, there are few locations that can match their selection.
Two and one-half years ago, Jimmy Lee discovered sustainable sushi; it has been his mission since to change the eating habits of sushi consumers. The Chico State alum and former algebra teacher turned sushi chef brings a more conscious way of enjoying sushi to the table, offering alternatives to some of the known favorites. On May 3rd, Aonomi brought two of Lee’s loves together; sushi and family. Lee’s wife Youa and brother Kevin run the front of the restaurant, while brothers Raymond and Sonny run the kitchen with extended family members (Lee’s fraternity brothers) Jose and Vicente.

Flumes Paradise
Creek water flowing, birds chirping and wild flowers blooming in abundant colorful waves, the PG&E flume trail is a beautiful place to go hiking and relax outdoors. It is one of the most diverse scenic areas to explore in Butte County. The flumes and dams overlook the valley, adorned with tall trees and many species of birds, such as quail, pygmy owls, sparrows and hummingbirds. Depending on your level of hiking skill, there is an easy walking trail or a more strenuous hike down to the river. Water rushing under the catwalks and clear, natural swimming holes draw you in for a day on the water and out of the valley heat.
Back at the Ranch
Chico Municipal Airport
Paradise
A taste of the western lifestyle and being at the ranch, this local store is popular in the Paradise community for western casual wear, art, home decor and gifts. The store was established in 2001 by Barbara Ely. Barbara and her husband Marshall Ely remodeled a 3,000 square foot building through the Paradise Downtown revitalization program to create this business. They won the Golden Poppy award for beautification of an old building and ‘Business of the Year’ in 2006 by the chamber of commerce. Back at the Ranch partakes in many festivals and events throughout Butte County, such as the Horse Festival and the Golden Nugget Days, and is the perfect spot to pick up local gifts, home goods and artisan products.
The airport was built in the 1930s after the city of Chico acquired 160 acres of land. In 1941, Chico acquired a thousand more acres of land for the purpose of leasing the airport to the U.S. government during WWII. The Chico Army Airfield was under command of the 10th Army Force Base Unit, AAF West Coast Training Center and Army Air Forces Training Command. It trained over 5,000 cadets and thousands of ground personnel. In 1962 it was home to a missile base, but due to two accidents these were closed off. The Chico Air Museum, located near the airport, provides the community with access to view and learn about this rich history. Today the airport is used for general aviation, served by one commercial airline. It provides fuel, maintenance, and charter flights for businesses and personal travel.
Monkey Face
Northern Star Mills
This hike is right in upper Bidwell Park and perfect if you’re looking for something that is short and sweet. Hike north from the parking lot to the Maidu trail where you can see the peaks of the rocks resembles a face of a monkey. At the top of the peak is a beautiful view overlooking Horseshoe Lake, Bidwell Golf Course and the Chico Valley. Find shade, shelter, a bit of nature and history in the caverns of the rocks now sometimes inhabited by bats, where the Mechoopda Maidu have left grinding holes. The best time to go is right before sunset; get to the top in time to see the sky turn a fiery orange and red over the Chico Valley, reflected in the lakes and streams below.
Opened in 1897, Northern Star Mills is one of Chico’s oldest and longest running businesses period; the fact that it is family owned and operated only makes it that much more impressive. The feed and seed store of choice for Chicoans and surrounding area residents, Northern Star Mills has been providing pet and animal food and supplies for over one hundred fifteen years; from the looks of things, you can expect the same great service for plenty of generations to come. Stop by, give the store mascot, Jake, a friendly pat on the head and see why this location has stood the test of time.

Chinese Temple Oroville
This treasured temple was built in 1863 and served the largest Chinese community north of Sacramento. Original construction and furnishings were funded by the Emperor and Empress of China. It originated as a place of worship for many Eastern religions, and is known as “Liet Sheng Kong” (The Temple of Many Deities). In 1907 most of the Chinese in Oroville were forced to leave because of massive floods. The temple is still in use as a place of worship, historical relevance and local pride. In 1949, it was opened as a museum for the public to come appreciate the Tapestry Hall. This is collection of embroideries, parade parasols and Chinese costumes. Within the temple compound, a garden features Lace Bark Pine trees and Bamboo that was planted in the 1860s. In 2008, the Fong Lee Company building was added to display artifacts of medicinal herbs and gold shops from the Chan Family.

Opened in 1912, Tong Fong Low is about as historic as restaurants in the area get. Family owned and operated for one hundred years, this local Chinese cuisine favorite proves that cooking ability is undeniably genetic. The family recently opened its second location in Chico to critical acclaim, and quickly found itself earning the coveted “Best of Chico” title.
Mary’s Gone Crackers Chico & Oroville
Diagnosed with Celiac Disease at 43 years of age, Mary set out to change her life by cutting out gluten entirely. Re-energized and healthy, Mary began creating healthy snacks that would substitute well in place of her old favorites. The best of these creations was a whole grain cracker made with brown rice, quinoa, flax and sesame seeds. The cracker was an instant hit with friends and family, so Mary and her husband Dale decided to invest their life savings in turning it into a national brand in 2004. Eight years later, the crackers are everywhere. Having been featured on Oprah and garnering more coverage than they ever imagined possible, the brand Mary’s Gone Crackers has become a staple for lovers of great foods, whether gluten-free or not.
This recipe makes ten servings.
Pie crust preparation:
Combine flour, salt, and sugar in a bowl. Mix well until the mixture is evenly distributed. Microwave butter for 10 seconds or flatten with fingers or mallet, and mix into mixture. Add ice water slowly while mixing the previous ingredients. Continue to mix until the ingredients start to form dough. Pour remaining water into bowl and knead the dough until all ingredients are fully mixed. Split dough into two halves and place on top of wax paper. Roll each half out into a flat disc shape using a rolling pin. Refrigerate. Preheat oven to 400 degrees fahrenheit. Apple filling preparation:
In a large bowl, toss apple wedges with lemon juice. Combine sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg
and salt; add to apples and toss. Microwave butter for 30 seconds, pour over mixture and toss again. Bringing it all together:
Place one of the pie crust dough discs in a ceramic or aluminum pie plate and slowly work the dough into the sidewall creases. Make sure the dough hangs slightly over the edge of the plate; this will create the bottom crust. Pour apple filling on top of the bottom crust and cover with the second disc of the pie crust dough. Pinch the edges of the top crust with the bottom crust, covering the filling; continue around the pie plate until the edges of the pie are sealed. Poke medium sized holes in the top crust. Beat egg yolk and brush around holes in the top crust. Sprinkle top crust with sugar, and bake in the oven for one hour.

Arts
Artist Profile:
Jeremy Sawtelle by Briana Lindstrom
Photography by Michelle Camy
Jeremy Sawtelle is a young artist with an old soul. He is kind, compassionate and articulate with an adventurous and innovative spirit. Originally from Redding, Jeremy sampled city life in Sacramento where he got his degree in psychology, but he quickly realized he missed being surrounded by nature. When he was offered a high-paying job in the bay area, he turned it down and decided “I just want to be a Special Ed teacher, be broke the rest of my life, and be way happier.” A few weeks ago, he moved to Chico. Back in nature and ready to study for his Masters in Education with a Special Ed Credential, he brought his art with him and is ready for a new adventure in his life.
UL: Will you incorporate art in your
teaching? JS: I've been blessed with a lot and I would really like to work with those who most of society has a blind eye for. I do believe art can be therapeutic and can be a great avenue for any kind of expression so I will definitely incorporate art into my classroom. UL: What media do you use? JS: Coffee and packets of Kool-aid. I
needed to save money and use whatever supplies I could. This mixture stains everything. I also like to paint with acrylic.
UL: Do you listen to music while you
paint? JS: Absolutely. God is an Astronaut is probably my go-to band for painting. UL: How did you get into painting?
JS: I used to hate art. I never drew, never
painted. Just wasn't into it. I had to take an art class for a requirement in high school. I was sitting in the back and was dreading getting through it. The teacher told me to work on one drawing for an entire week and if I still wasn’t into it, he’d help me drop the class. I got so into my drawing that I would sneak it into other classes and try to work on it. That teacher, Ed Howland, ended up being my mentor and biggest artistic inspiration.
UL: What are 3 words you describe
yourself with?
JS: Extroverted, Goofy, Warrior UL: Does your art express those 3 words? JS: Well i don't want to be so cliché
about it but the beauty is you see whatever you want. If you happen to see those 3 things in my artwork, I guess
you get a reflection of a little bit of my personality. UL: Have you learned anything about
yourself, or the world through your own artistic process? JS: My whole artistic perspective and motivations were warped for awhile when I began selling artwork and I don't necessarily want to go down that route again because I found myself painting more for others. UL: What is your favorite quote? JS: "Here is where I am." I was having
a rough day about a week and a half ago, i decided to bike 30 miles in 100 degree weather and I ended up in upper Bidwell thinking about how I've been generally pessimistic about the future state of the world. It came down to "Here is where I am," and “here” is beautiful.
