Local Legend by Emily Spesert | photograph by Michelle Camy hyllis Eggleston remembers when Dr. Newton T. Enloe used to ride his log ambulance down the water flume from Forest Ranch to his 38-bed hospital on Flume Street; she was born there in 1929. Her family ranch on Keefer Road had a telephone line, shared with ten other families. For fun, she and her sister, Ancil, rode their bikes and horses around Rock Creek. Each summer, the family would take their touring car up Old Humboldt Road where it would have to rest at the old watering trough like a tired, overheated horse. Their destination was always the place they dubbed “Cow Camp,” just below Butte Meadows: a 2-bedroom log cabin and big barn where they “camped out” with their horses and the neighbor's cows. They would also travel into town with the car, where a train ran down Esplanade and Chico State was still a small college that had only been giving Bachelor's Degrees for about 10 years. All of Butte County had less than 43,000 residents. As Chico grew, so did Phyllis. The family moved to Oak Street where she transferred from Central to Shasta Union, then on to Chico High. She would escape homework by going to the neighboring property, her grandparents' house, where she learned to play Pinochle. It still mortifies her to remember visiting Woolworth's with her
grandma, Jecca. They sat at the counter and her 50-something grandma put her chewed Hubba-Bubba gum on the saucer and banged her coffee cup with a spoon to get a warm-up. At age 17, Phyllis took a summer detour to work in the ship yards of South San Francisco as a carpenter along with her mother. She returned to school and lived with her father. “I shouldn't have been there in the first place,” she says. That same year, she got married. Her husband, Don, was an army engineer and their apartment on 12th Avenue had a pull-down bed and cost $27 per month. They relocated to Cherry Street when the upstairs icebox overflowed through the ceiling onto their bed. Several years later, they purchased their first refrigerator from Montgomery Ward and lived in a house where they never had to deal with icebox pans again. As industry advanced in Chico,
Living in Chico for a lifetime forms a special bond

Phyllis went from being an AT&T operator, to a Victor toothpaste tube lab technician, to an almond sorter at Tenneco West. Like most locals, she also gathered almonds off the ground at various local orchards. She had two children and her rent turned into a mortgage payment of $79 per month. The City of Chico grew even more, Don passed on, and Enloe Hospital relocated and became a major medical center where, for the past 15 years, Phyllis has been a member of the volunteer support group, Chico Ostomy Association. Living in Chico for a lifetime forms a special bond; stories of Resident and City become intertwined. Changes in the town eventually reflect changes in life. Growth of a city mirrors growth of a family. Many people are in the public eye, but even more people live private lives of background support and networking. The stories of both live on through just a simple inquiry of: “What do you remember?” And that is the heart of what makes Phyllis Eggleston a local legend.

Celebration Fashion Show (Breast Cancer Awareness)
by Desireé DeLattre | Photography by Aveed Khaki They are the women that you’d casually pass by on Main Street. They stand in front of you in line for your grande soy latte. Just like other moms, they tuck their little ones in a night, and whisper “I love you” as they reach to turn the light off. These are not just women. These are warriors, and they have fought battles that most of us could ever fathom. Against the odds, the estimations of time left, and the diagnosis of breast cancer- they have conquered fear. The Celebration Foundation, which was funded by the Virginia L. Jones Foundation and the Foor Foundation, produced the Celebration in honor of these women, their specialists, and their supporters in a runway fashion show and luncheon. While the Compassion Fund at Enloe Medical Center is available to all patients, the Celebration 2012 proceeds are specifically designated to assist local cancer patients who have exhausted all other resources. Without the support from programs such as these, our local fighters may have endured a silent battle. The Celebration Fashion show included motivational speeches of perseverance, dance numbers that mimicked favorite decades (accompanied by some of Butte County’s own firefighters), and hand-picked outfits that were worn beautifully by 39 breast cancer survivors. One of the triumphant models, Suzette Curtis hasn’t heard the word “cancer” from her doctor in 4 years. As an experienced hairstylist, a loving wife and super-mom to her 14 year old son, Aydin, Suzette says that the big C gave her the opportunity to “learn to dance in the rain”- a quote that kept her spirits up throughout her treatment. Since the times of hospital visits, nights without sleep, and tears on the shoulders of loved ones, Suzette says she appreciates every moment of everyday. “I don’t sweat the small stuff anymore. If there’s a choice between doing a sink full of dishes or spending a few minutes with my son, I’ll leave the dishes.” Suzette, like the other models, was quite nervous about the grand performance. But the nerves seem to fade away as the first number (“Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira) came through the speakers. Throughout the afternoon, there was laughing, crying, and plenty of strutting with fashions provided by all the best in local couture. Inspiration never looked so good, and these ladies definitely showed that we are more than the trials we go through.

Thursday Night Market April 5th, 2012
Photography by Clark Miller The first Thursday Night Market was anything but quiet. Familiar sights, sounds and faces flooded the downtown area on April 5th signaling what we consider to be the true start of spring in the Chico area. Our gallery opened its doors for a spring preview of what is soon to arrive, and the public poured in. If this evening was any indication of the rest of the season, it will undoubtedly be a great one.

Is this the right time to buy? By Effie Khaki I’m asked this same question nearly every day and it feels like I’ve been answering it for the past twenty-three years. Not so long ago, the average home seemed to be out of reach for most first-time homebuyers. Since then the world of real estate has changed, some might say, dramatically. Historically low mortgage rates: 15 year mortgage rates have fallen, often being found as low as 3.25% and 30 year mortgages could be found for as low as 4%. Combined with various federal programs, these rates provide one of the best opportunities to buy a home. Current home prices: The home prices in Chico and its surrounding communities have seen significant reduction over the past three years, some as much as 30 to 40% from recent highs. Rising rents: The increased demand for rental housing has led to a general increase in rent for comparable properties. For many, it now makes financial sense to own a house rather than to rent one as many homes can be owned for the same or nearly the same cost. It appears as if the real estate market has taken notice of these trends and we are already seeing greater demand and rising prices in the mid-level housing market. This is the signal: it’s the right time to buy. There are still great deals to be had while this perfect storm is in place. Wait too long and you risk buying at the peak of the market, like so many did just a few years ago. As the demand for housing improves, so will the demand for furnishings, appliances, house goods etc. This also improves the prospects for the local economy and sets in motion a cycle leading to job growth, higher income levels and even further demand for housing. The golden mantra is buy low and sell high; right now is the perfect time to do just that.

Rudy Giscombe In Memoriam
CelebratingRudy.com Rudy Giscombe was a man easily noticed and far too difficult to forget. A regular at coffee shops like Bidwell Perk and Sin of Cortez, his laugh gave him away to patrons long before we ever saw him. A talented and accomplished photographer and musician, Rudy’s photography was revered by both young and old, and the notes escaping his saxophone seemed to transcend the general lines drawn around musical genres. He was, without a doubt, a renaissance man of our time. Rudy’s birthday is coming up, and his friends and admirers are throwing a huge party in his memory. In classic Rudy fashion, the event will benefit aspiring students of the arts, much like his mentorship of young artists did throughout his life. The benefit will provide three deserving artists with the needed funds to continue into promising careers. Great food, wonderful music, dancing, a no-host bar, raffled prizes and a silent auction of Rudy’s prized photography collection will all be in attendance. Tickets are being sold for $50 each and all proceeds from ticket, raffle and silent auction sales will go towards the artist scholarships. At the time of this writing, there were only 136 tickets remaining, and they’re going fast! Visit CelebratingRudy. com to buy tickets or call Rudy’s close friend Michael Agliolo at (530) 891-5100 for more information.

The Power of Networking by Aveed Khaki
When one thinks of the components of building a successful business, the most common elements that come to mind would undoubtedly be maximum visibility, sound financial decisions, useful product or service offerings and proper customer service. Strangely though, one of the most important components of building a successful business also happens to be the one most often overlooked: networking. Most of us spend each and every day networking, whether we know it or not. Lunch with a friend, coffee with a book club or a friendly conversation with a neighbor across the street all qualify as excellent forms of networking; we do it unknowingly, and for the most part, do it extremely well. When it comes to business though, things seem to change dramatically. We suddenly become introverts, content spending each workday behind a counter or desk waiting for someone to reach out to us rather than reaching out to them. There is a clear psychological difference between business and personal networking, but in reality the two are one in the same. Luckily for us, there are groups designed to help pry us from our shell. LeTip is an organization whose sole purpose is to extend a platform that provides
business owners with the means to make business networking just as effortless as our daily interactions with friends and family. The kicker? The increase in business networking leads to meeting others in your community, growth of your own business, reciprocal growth for other businesses in the group, and in the end, a financially stronger community that benefits everyone. In the last year, Chico’s LeTip group generated over $300,000 in new business for its nineteen members, in essence putting over $16,000 on average extra into each of its members’ pockets throughout the year, an obviously welcome increase for each business’ bottom line. Perhaps most important, all it took to accomplish this was networking during one breakfast a week with fellow group members. The results speak for themselves. Whether you’re looking to attract extra revenue into your business, become more visible or achieve greater involvement with your community, learning to network properly is a wonderful starting point. Stop by for a LeTip meeting at Moms restaurant downtown any Tuesday morning at 7am and see what networking can do for your business.
Accessing a Path to Security by Nick Hanna / New York Life Whether you’re a parent planning for a child’s education or a small business owner poised for growth, one thing’s for certain — there’s not much you can control about the future. And when you add the backdrop of a turbulent economy, it may be difficult to even think about making long-term plans for yourself, your family or your loved ones. But one key to moving forward may be securing a level of financial protection against life’s uncertainties, for however long you need it. Term life insurance can help provide that protection. As many households are juggling multiple obligations including mortgages, auto loans and educational expenses, the prospect of leaving loved ones burdened with those responsibilities can be particularly overwhelming. All these concerns 18
can be addressed in ways tailored to what you and your family can afford. Term life insurance provides coverage at a level you choose, for a period of time you designate. For young families or single parents, term policies are an accessible path to security. And, as your financial circumstances change in the future, a term policy can be easily upgraded to permanent insurance to cover your long-term goals and dreams. Let’s face it. You can’t be prepared for everything. But a term insurance policy might help you plan for more than you realize. Nick Hanna (CA/AR Ins. Lic. #0G69194) is an agent of New York Life Insurance Company. Pre-owned Car Buying Made Easy! By Nick Patterson
Everyone hates the feeling of being hassled or pressured when coming to a car dealership. For some, the experience can be more stressful than public speaking or a trip to the dentist for a root canal. If you feel this way, there are a few easy tips can help eliminate the stress and anxiety of buying a used car. Online Research: There are many tools online to help figure out what vehicle will work best for you. Whether your hot button is price, style, utility, or you just want something fun or sporty, online information will get the ball rolling. Determine one or two vehicles that interest you, then search your local market and see what’s out there. Call or visit the dealership: Remember, not all salesmen are the same! Being comfortable with the salesperson on the other end of the phone or greeting you on the lot will ensure a much more successful and enjoyable buying experience. A good salesperson is there to work for you! Make sure that you communicate your needs and desires clearly. More importantly make sure that the salesperson listens and understands exactly what you are looking for. Price: Negotiate! Ask for what you think is fair, but be reasonable. The value of a good, clean, used car should not be underestimated. Also, remember that car values will fluctuate with market conditions. When gas hits $5 dollars per gallon, for example, you can expect to pay more for a four cylinder economy car that gets 40 miles to the gallon! Instead of focusing strictly on price, ask your salesman about the history of the vehicle. CARFAX has become a standard tool when buying a used car, so do not do business with dealers that will not provide this to you. A “one owner” vehicle or “local trade” are each a good sign. Sometimes with a pre-owned vehicle you have to be patient. The good ones go quick so if you find a salesman that you trust, give them a call and tell them what you are looking for. It may take a few weeks but eventually the right one will come around. If you have any other questions feel free to email me, contact me by phone, or stop by the dealership and say hello! npatterson@chuckpattersontoyota.motosnap.com (530) 228-1722
California Dream Week by Aveed Khaki
ounded in 2011 by Melisa Lassell and organized by The Worm Farm, California Dream Week is entering its second year as Chico’s premier showcase on studentdreamed sustainability. An international design festival by definition, California Dream Week was created to provide high school students with scholarships and help fund schools that foster and facilitate student creativity in sustainability, specifically within the areas of architecture & interior product design, transportation, and product compliments. Between the months of August and February, students from Monterey to the Oregon border submit their ideas on sustainability and compete for a number of scholarships and the attention of renowned architects and designers from around the world, who congregate to celebrate these ideas. The 2012 competition finalists’ designs will be honored in a series of renderings created by international designers and reinterpreted into a final project by the participating architects. These combined projects will be showcased at A Bit Unruly, Bird In Hand, Bustolini’s, Cyclesport, Ellis Art, Lyon Books, Made in Chico, Upper Crust Bakery and Zucchini & Vine. During the 2011 festival, a series of stops
throughout the city were organized to allow visitors to experience and celebrate the creativity brought forward by the young minds in northern California. From treasure hunts to giveaways and culinary experiences to performances, California Dream Week brought a new source of excitement to our town, including an opportunity to see a special performance by Kevin Bacon and his band The Bacon Brothers, right here in Chico. California residents, business owners, public figures and non-profits all joined together to make contributions in support of the event and the outcome was fantastic. This year should prove to be no different. May 10th will feature the McBride Brothers Band at the Tackle Box and Zen Road Pilots at the Graduate. May 11th will feature a special performance at Lost on Main along with a special Wine & Cheese showcase at our location at 3rd and Broadway downtown. Finally the event will come to a close on May 12th with the awards ceremony at Sol Mexican Grill. Whether you’re interested in seeing some of the best that sustainable architecture has to offer, supporting northern California students, or simply looking for fun entertainment and an undoubtedly great time, make sure you purchase your passport to this amazing week. Proceeds from ticket sales go directly to the high schools represented in the project. Tickets can be purchased online at www. CaliforniaDreamWeek.com. We’ll look forward to seeing you there! 19
Clean Up for Mother’s Day by Janelle Wilson
As our Mother always said,
Spring Furnishings by Royce Peterson
pring is finally (seemingly) here! Along with a new attitude, spring is seen as a time for renewal. With that in mind, I want to showcase a couple of recent projects to see if any ideas come to your mind. If you are looking for renewal, a great place to start is within your home and new furnishings are a special treat. As you may be aware, I take old dwellings and repurpose them into heritage, one of a kind furniture. For a local company, I was asked to take down two of their family’s structures and store the pieces until they built their new corporate headquarters. Working along with Larry Wood from Golden West Stairs Inc, we were able to create a stunning 6 foot by 24 foot long boardroom table. I did the wood part and Larry and crew created the hammered metal details and legs that encompassed the table as you can see. This was a great collaborative effort and our clients get many
compliments on the tables and benches we made for them in this style. You may not have a dining area large enough to seat 40 people so we may want to scale back a bit. The next photo shows a table and benches that we created for a special event a short time ago. Made of thick reclaimed lumber and red Douglas fir from an old lumber company building in Oroville, this set is very special. We also incorporated a stretcher between the legs made from a triangular rafter from an old home near the deer pens in Chico. The top of the table was from a barn near Willows. A great and interesting pedigree for sure! You can find me at work on the next classic at my shop at 2139 Esplanade Ave. Stop in and we can talk about your needs and wants. A call to 894-5138 is a good start as well. I have several projects featured at Dolce Home near the corner of Third Ave and Esplanade. Look up Melissa and her staff for excellent design work too.

Dining in the Great Outdoors by aveed khaki photography by Michelle Camy
There are plenty of things to love about the Chico area when temperatures start to make their steady climb towards the 100s, but few strike as great a chord with us as the option to revel in culinary masterpieces in the great outdoors. The following are some of our favorite patio dining locations throughout town. We hope you get to know them as well as we do.
Sol A favorite for those taking in lunch in the north Chico area, Sol’s patio is perfect for enjoying a great meal in the Chico heat. Fans set in the large overhang provide plenty of air circulation to keep the shaded patio at an ideal temperature for dining.
The Gooney Bird Bar & Grill
Possibly Chico’s largest outdoor dining venue, The Gooney Bird’s patio is best experienced during the twilight hours. Candlelit tables set the mood for a dining experience unlike any other in Chico.
Grana Opened just a few months ago, Grana has already made a name for itself as a downtown Chico mainstay. Its patio is like a second grand opening. Well appointed with plenty of seating to take in the evening air with good friends and great food.
24
Monks When it comes to dining at Monks, we would by lying if we said we didn’t make a bee-line for the patio each and every time we stopped in for a visit. Lovely and intimate, time seems to pass unnoticed here. Be sure to make reservations though, as this location fills up quick!
UPGRADED LIVING | MAY 2012 | UPGRADEDLIVING.COM
Bellachino’s Right down the street from the California Park community, this fantastic little slice of outdoor heaven is just the respite a dog walker needs during a morning jaunt. Great good and perfect lighting make this a must visit.
Smokin’ Mo’s Arguably the most unknown of Chico’s restaurant patios, Smokin’ Mo’s provides a quiet outdoor dining experience perfect for the whole family. We can’t help but admit that we’re a bit biased as the food is also out of this world.
Crush High above Chico’s Second Street, the patio at Crush provides a bird’s eye view of the hustle and bustle of the downtown traffic below. Stop by during happy hour and you’ll be sure to find yourself there for the rest of the evening.
Annie’s Asian Grill Adjacent to Little Chico Creek, the patio at Annie’s is one of the most sought after dining locales in town. Heavy foliage and string lighting set the stage for one of Chico’s most charming outdoor dining options. Reservations are recommended.
Bidwell Perk Awww, the Perk. When it comes to glorious coffee, good friends, great food and possibly the best wi-fi in Chico, this hoppin’ hole-in-the-wall coffee shop has got it all. Add a beautiful patio that seems to get our attention rain-or-shine and you’ve got all the makings for our favorite hangout in town.
Sierra Nevada Few things sound as perfect as drinking an ice cold glass of Sierra Nevada beer during the hot summer months. One of those few things is the ability to do so on Sierra Nevada’s very own patio. This oft loud and friendly patio combines a beer selection direct from the adjoining brewery with a mouth-watering menu that is sure to delight. Stop by with friends and laugh the night away.
5th Street Steakhouse Tres Hombres A favorite hangout for all of us at Upgraded Living, Tres’ patio is a must visit for anyone looking to take in the downtown scene. Perfect for people watching while sipping a margarita, this patio has something for everyone.
Chico’s definitive steakhouse provides a gated patio experience on the corner of 5th and Normal perfect for enjoying your favorite glass of wine with your favorite cut of steak. If you’re a meat-lover or wino, this is for you.

Chico’s Newest Clothing Store By Aveed Khaki
indy Brochheuser has that certain light in her eye and spark in her smile; the kind that signals that she knows something the rest of us might not, and as many of you know by now, we’re suckers for a good secret. Lucky for us, we don’t have to keep this one to ourselves (because as you probably also know, we’re horrible at that). In just a few short weeks, Cindy plans to open Chico’s newest clothing store, Labelz, in the old Woman Beautiful location at the Mangrove Plaza shopping center. As a mother to five girls, Cindy has been a firsthand witness to countless articles of clothing purchased, worn once, and filed away in the back of the closet, never to be seen again. It was this repetitive cycle that sparked her interest in opening a new clothing store in the area that focuses
on putting those forgotten items to good use. Luckily for her, one of these daughters, Jordan, will be her store manager and also has an amazing eye for fashion. As an upscale consignment boutique, Labelz will finally provide residents of Chico and surrounding communities with the ability to treat clothing as an investment, much like Buffalo Exchange and Crossroads Trading Co. did for cities like Berkeley and San Francisco. Clients will be able to set up an appointment with Cindy directly, create an account and elect to have their items consigned or purchased outright. Consigners will have the ability to track sales of their items in their personal online account and will receive a generous 40% return of the sale price of any of their items in cash at the end of the month, or may spend 50% of the sale price as credit to shop within the store itself. Cindy plans on carrying brands like Guess, Bebe, and BCBG, as well as Michael
Kors, Louis Vuitton and Coach. Shoes, handbags, and accessories will guide much of the store’s catalog and she plans to cater to women and men of a wide age range. Starting May 15th, Cindy will start taking appointments for consignment. Make it a point to schedule a consignment visit as part of your annual spring cleaning this year and use the money to fund your new summer wardrobe, but make sure you call soon, as space is limited. We’re excited to finally see a business that will close the fashion loop in town, allow residents to build a quality wardrobe for a fraction of the price, and provide another way to circulate money throughout our local economy. Labelz is scheduled to open to the general public in mid-June, and you can be sure we’ll be there to help them celebrate their grand opening! You can contact Cindy directly to set up an appointment at 530.945.6953 35

by CPR twice at this point, she felt it was her duty to train others in CPR so that they too could save a life should they be faced with such a crisis. With only 21% of Americans knowing how to properly perform CPR, it’s clear that her service is well needed. As of six months ago, Carol and Erenee have begun teaching proper CPR throughout Butte, Glenn, Colusa and Tehama counties, both to individuals and businesses large and small. The duo have been certified to even train future trainers in this life saving exercise, thereby exponentially increasing the number of lives their knowledge may help save. At 56 years of age with a healthy heart, one that even her doctors exclaimed was a shock to see in the hospital, Carol had her first near-death experience and thanks to CPR, six years have been added to her life so far. At 62 years of age she is doing her part, alongside her daughter Erenee, to train others and remind them that CPR is covered by the Good Samaritan law. You cannot be sued for using it nor should you be afraid to do so should the need arise. She is an absolute inspiration and we’re proud to call her a supermom.
Chico Beauty Institute By Aveed Khaki
uring a visit to a chiropractic trade show with her husband, Karen Masula came upon a microcurrent treatment machine and fell in love with the results she saw in her skin from the introductory treatment. Wanting the machine for her own use, she realized the need for this sort of treatment for others in the Chico area as well, purchased the machine and began providing the service out of her husband’s chiropractic office, Masula Chiropractic, in Chico’s Philadelphia Square. After a few short months, demand for the service had outgrown the accommodations of her husband’s office, and Karen moved in next door. Karen took on a partner, Laura Schwartz, a licensed esthetician, and founded Chico Beauty Institute in 2009. The duo has been helping customers regain their youthful looks since, utilizing the newest technology to provide lasting results, often in as little time as one visit. Best of all, the treatments are completely non-invasive, require no downtime and are both painless and free of swelling or redness. Many clients visit during their lunch hour and return to work directly after. As we age, our bodies stop producing new collagen and elastin, the protein responsible for creating the firm and toned nature of younger skin. The result of this loss of new collagen and elastin is evidenced by skin that wrinkles and loses the ability to remain elastic and shapely. By stimulating the fibroblasts within the skin, microcurrent and LED treatments at the Chico Beauty Institute can actually stimulate production of new collagen and elastin, providing a
more firm and toned nature to skin, similar to a facelift but costing not much more than a facial. Amongst some of their other notable treatments, the radio frequency ultrasound machine is truly amazing, as it disintegrates cellulite without the need for surgical intervention. The Jet Clear machine provides microdermabrasion using sterile saline, which exfoliates while it cleanses the skin. The LED light machine used for collagen stimulation can also treat eczema, acne, psoriasis and a host of other skin irregularities with ease and without need for costly medications. Finally the microcurrent treatment, the original machine from which Chico Beauty Institute was built, delivers small amounts of electrical current to tighten facial muscles, leaving the face looking lifted and feeling decades younger. The treatments utilized at Chico Beauty Institute are simply amazing and the before-and-after photos above speak to their efficacy. As a breast cancer survivor, Laura takes comprehensive measures to ensure that each and every item carried and used on clients is welltested and without adverse complications. Recently, Chico Beauty Institute became a distributor for Protandim, a new supplement proven to reduce oxidative stress by 40%, and up to 70%, reducing the speed of cell aging to that of a twenty year old. Whether you’re looking to treat irregularities in your skin or regain your youthful look, stop by the Chico Beauty Institute and see what they can do for you. If the word around town has anything to say about it, you’ll be glad you did. 43

Smiling Through Generations by Tommy Farris
Mother’s Day....time to reflect on all the special women in our families that have conveyed life. Ladies who have given birth to generations, and traditions of great love and care. As you honor your loved ones this Mother’s Day, do you realize that it wasn’t that long ago, even a generation or less in some families, that losing all of one’s teeth was EXPECTED? Gasp!! Yes, expected. Dentures were viewed as inevitable, and loose teeth and pain were commonplace maladies that served as milestones on the unavoidable path toward artificial teeth, “plastic chompers.” The good news in 2012 is that your teeth can and should last a lifetime!! Dangerous cycles of neglect are born out of the fear of dentistry, yet current techniques allow comfortable care that could only be dreamed of in the past. Research reveals that we chew 33 million times, and comprehensive dental care focuses on all that chewing happening with natural teeth that are the most efficient, allow for better taste sensations, and have the best function and durability. Unsaveable teeth or those already missing are more and more commonly being replaced with reliable dental implants that have the most natural look and feel. Millions of teeth are being saved thanks to good periodontal care, and technological advances have led to crowns being completed in one visit and all dentistry looking natural. Your teeth are your greatest asset and should last a lifetime. At Nelsen Family Dentistry we are focused first and foremost on your comfort, and greatly value personal relationships. We are committed to keeping up with the most up-to-date treatments and work every day to deserve and earn your trust, so that you can enjoy all the benefits of keeping your teeth.
Rugby Anyone? Wheels, Wine & Ribs III by Vincent Commendatore, D.C., B.S.N., R.N. In keeping with this month’s Upgraded Living theme of patios, picnics and bike rides, Dr. Anderson and I decided to dedicate our article to an upcoming fundraiser: Wheels, Wine & Ribs. This is the third year we have hosted this event and NEW this year we are turning the event into a fundraiser for Chico Youth Rugby and the Chico Rugby Foundation. Sports were a key part of my childhood. I believe that youth sports helped keep me out of trouble and I learned important lessons about teamwork and self-esteem. With budget cuts in our schools, Chico sports programs have been feeling the squeeze. Youth, middle school and high school rugby is filling that gap. Lately, thanks to the Chico Rugby Foundation and its members, the youth rugby movement has grown with great success. In addition to the Chico Mighty Oaks men’s team and the Chico State men’s
Hello movers
Getting your midsection ready for summer? If so, you will want to start by watching your caloric intake to ensure that you are not wasting the time you spend doing all of those crunches. May is a great month to tighten up your meal plan so that you can tighten up your waistline. As this month’s Upgraded Living theme discusses picnics in the park, I will discuss a few healthy caloric options that you can contribute to the festivities. Foremost, keep your contributions LIGHT! Most picnics are laden with heavy foods. Hot dogs, fried chicken, hamburgers, potato salad and Lays potato chips with gobs of bean dip will only weigh your belly down. Who wants to throw the football or frisbee around with your friends or children after a bunch of heavy table grazing? Add in a few Sierra Nevadas and you now have a recipe for lawn chair surfing at its finest, not an active calorie burning game of volleyball.
and women’s teams, there are now Chico youth rugby teams for kids ages 8 to 18. To support the growth of youth rugby in Chico, Chico Spine & Wellness (CS&W) along with the Chico Rugby Foundation is putting on a great fundraiser this summer. Join us on June 16th for Wheels, Wine & Ribs III. This family friendly event starts with a leisurely half hour bike ride to 5 Mile recreational area where appetizers will be served. We’ll bike back to CS&W to meet any non-biking attendees at 6 pm and enjoy a fabulous rib & wine dinner with dessert. The ribs are so tender they fall right off the bone!! Adult tickets are $25 and can be purchased from any rugby player or at CS&W. Adult tickets are only available in advance. Kids meals can be purchased at the event for just $7 each. For more information go to www.WheelsWineRibs.com. Dr. Anderson and I will see you there!
Consider instead a few of the following recipes for fun in the sun:
Apple Slices and Organic Almond Butter (Pick yours up at the Farmer’s Market) Almond Butter and Organic Jelly on Whole Wheat Bread (quartered) Ice Water with thinly sliced lemon floats or thinly sliced cucumber (for flavor) Celery Sticks dipped in local organic honey Each of these picnic friendly fuel/food choices will keep your picnic intake light, with a few forms of simple carbohydrates to help fuel your fun in the sun. If you would like to find a few activities that compliment these foods, visit advanced-body.com or find us on facebook for a list that will help keep your picnic active and fun! Until next month, Move with Intention.

Bike-to-Work Day by Aveed Khaki Bike-to-Work Day is almost here! There’s nothing folks from northern California love more than another reason to ride their bikes, and this year’s annual celebration of all things bicycling should be no different. The good people at weather.com are predicting temperatures in the mid-to-high seventies, and with riding weather like that, you’d be foolish to abstain. Originally created by the League of American Bicyclists in 1956, National Bike-to-Work Day is an annual event held across the United States and Canada during the month of May. This year it falls on May 18th, the final day of the national Bike-to-Work Week (Yes, it also exists). As May is National Bike Month, bicycle advocacy groups locally and abroad spend the time leading up to National Biketo-Work Day encouraging people to try bicycle commuting as means of positive transportation to and from work. The alternative to driving is clearly healthier, cheaper, and in many cases these days, significantly safer as well. Try your hand (and foot) at biking to work on May 18th, or better yet, the entire work week! Burn some calories, save money on gas, and celebrate the arrival of spring at the same time. We’ll see all of you out there!
Cyclesport Workshops by Aveed Khaki During Chico summers, it seems like bikes outnumber cars two-to-one on the road. We’re all required to take and pass a written and performance test before driving a car on public roads, but the same expectation doesn’t exist for bicyclists. As a result, many bicyclists ride into open traffic without the proper training to ride safely and in a way that minimizes dangers to themselves and general vehicle traffic. Anyone who’s read a few issues of Upgraded Living Magazine knows that we have a certain penchant for DIY; mix that with proper safety instruction and one of our favorite pastimes, bicycling, and you have a combination that can’t be beat. Mike Peavy and Ken Gelatti at downtown Chico’s Cyclesport are doing just that. From April through September, Mike and Ken will lead instructional group rides every Tuesday evening from 6pm to 8pm covering DIY material like changing flat tires and maintaining brake

lines. The group rides will also provide necessary skill drills for new riders such as pacelines, double pacelines, echelons, rotational echelons, cornering, bumping, etc. The cost for each class is $5. The return? Priceless. What good is all of this training if you have nowhere to use it? Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, the guys at Cyclesport will also be leading group rides for those who have mastered the skill drills taught in class along with any other cyclist who can keep up safely. Whether you’re a cycling amateur or a seasoned veteran, the guys at Cyclesport have something for everyone this season. Stop by, study up and get outfitted for another amazing season in one of the United States’ top cycling towns.
Chico Locker & Sausage by Aveed Khaki
hico is notorious for a number of things, but to us, the most interesting are the ones that people probably know very little about; our town’s connection to the meat industry is one of them. The modern meat locker business dates back to 1908, when the first commercial cold storage facility on record was opened right here in Chico, California. Things have come a long way since the early 1900s, and Chico Locker & Sausage Inc is a perfect example of this. Chico Locker & Sausage Inc is, without
a doubt, a legend in Chico’s food industry. Founded in 1965 by Russell Dewey, Chico Locker & Sausage Inc began as a simple processing room that cut meat for Chico residents and rented lockers for meat storage. In 1981, the business was purchased by its current owners, Russell’s son David and his wife Linda, who set out to grow the business to what it is today. Since 1981, David and Linda have added a considerable amount to the business, starting with a full-service deli and later incorporating a smokehouse that allows them to make much of what they sell directly onsite. From sausage and ham to bacon and jerky, residents and visitors
can find just about everything here. Over the years, the deli has become a local favorite for lunch, luring visitors across town with the promise of sandwiches filled with pastrami, smoked turkey breast, roast beef, sausage and baked ham made in the butcher shop and smokehouse next door. The taste is unmistakable and plenty of cause to swear off the pre-packaged meats you may be used to. Finish it off with a salad or side and be sure to grab a cut to take home for dinner. There’s something here for just about everyone, and a number of office heroes have been created from their catering trays alone. During the holiday season, the location is absolutely swamped with orders for Christmas and holiday turkeys, hams, lamb and recently prime ribs. Seasoned, boned, scooped and tied, these fully finished items save time and guarantee that every meat lover at the table leaves with a smile on their face. Chico Locker & Sausage also has a convenient mobile service that provides custom pickup, cutting, wrapping and storage of meat during 4H fair and hunting seasons and has been doing so for forty-five years. They’ve also expanded the retail arm of their business to include the sale of Green Mountain Grills, a sustainable grilling system that utilizes wood pellets for a taste that is out of this world at an incredibly affordable price. Finally, and perhaps best of all, Chico Locker & Sausage is committed to education, not just locally but abroad as well. Whether you have a question to ask in person or are interested in following their blog, the truth about locally procured meat is never more than a few minutes away, and to say the folks here are knowledgeable is a massive understatement. They’ve received national recognition for many of their products and have been inducted into the Cured Meats Hall of Fame by the American Association of Meat Processors. Stop by today and see why we simply can’t get enough of this Chico staple. 47
Kirshner FAQ by Desireé DeLattre
By now you’ve probably “ooh-ed” and “aww-ed”
at the stories and photos we’ve shared with you from the Barry Kirshner Wildlife Foundation. But many of you are still left going, “huh?” So here we are with the answers from questions you may have had, or didn’t even know you had! Read the facts, and see for yourself why Upgraded Living loves Kirshner!
Where do the animals come from? Many of the animals at the foundation are native, but there are a select few immigrants that call Kirshner “home.” The animals are usually brought from zoos, private licensed facilities, animal control, and other licensed foundations that don’t have the resources to care for special needs animals. Some animals were even given to Kirshner Wildlife through wills of people who rightfully owned the animals before they passed. Why are they at the sanctuary and not in a zoo or in the wild? 85% of the animals are specials needs, meaning they have a physical or mental impairment that requires special attention and care. Volunteers at the foundation work around the clock to make sure that the animals are healthy, happy, and healing. In addition, many of the animals are endangered species. The Kirshner Wildlife Foundation works to conserve these animals and educate the public about issues of endangerment and extinction. How do the animals get to the foundation? Typically, the animals are picked up either by plane or van by specially trained volunteers at Kirshner. Are the animals ever released back to where they came from? Because almost all of the animals have impairments, most will remain in the hands of the foundation. However, if a native animal becomes completely healthy and shows the ability to live without the special care, it is given back to where it was originally found. Recently, a number of owls, hawks and possums have been happily released into the wild. Do the animals breed? Due to the nature and condition of these animals, they do not breed. Most are kept separately from each other in order to promote recovery, health, and well-being. How much does it cost to feed and supply the animals per month? It costs between $12,000-$14,000 a month to give the animals the quality of life that makes the B. Kirshner Wildlife Foundation an outstanding sanctuary.
When was the Barry Kirshner Wildlife Foundation founded and why is it in Oroville? In 1994, the Kirshner Wildlife Foundation opened its doors to animals in need and the public. Because the Foundation’s owners are Butte County locals, building a location in Oroville was an easy choice. The community values the foundation, making Oroville a destination location while serving as an affordable area to house the animals. What is the oldest animal living at the foundation? What is the youngest? There are two 1 month old foxes that recently checked into Kirshner, making them the youngest current residents. The oldest, an 18 year old African lioness named Mala, is a Kirshner veteran and continues to need the care that the foundation provides. Which animals are the most endangered? Both the clouded (from the Himalayas) and snow leopards (Nepal) are the most globally threatened for extinction. How would volunteering at the foundation benefit me? How do I find out more about volunteering? If you’re currently a student, you can earn up to 8 transferable units through the Kirshner Wildlife Foundation. In addition, internships, educational programs working with both animals and children are available. Many of the volunteers help out simply because they are aware of the impact Kirshner has had on a global level, and want to give these animals a second chance at the life they deserve. To become a volunteer, call to make an appointment or stop by in person! How does the foundation receive money? Numerous fundraisers, camps, educational programs, and tours help fund the dream of the foundation. Donations, sponsorships, and adoptions also assist Kirshner in getting the supplies it needs to continue.
If it is so challenging, why does the Kirshner Wildlife Foundation do all this in the first place? The foundation was created from tragedy and led to a rewarding future. After a car accident that lead to the death of Barry Kirshner, a college student who had a passion for special needs animals and children, his family decided to continue his dream and start the foundation. It has brought the Kirshner family (as well as visitors and volunteers) an infinite amount of joy to be able to provide the utmost care for special needs animals. Roberta Kirshner, Barry’s mother and founder of the sanctuary says that being able to make a difference in any life, animal or human, has been the most rewarding experience that she could ever imagine. How is the Kirshner Wildlife Foundation involved with special needs children? The Foundation is tightly connected to Makea-Wish Foundation, the Ronald McDonald House, and the STAR program and gives unique opportunities to educate and give smiles to children in need. For those with impairments who visit the location in Oroville, volunteers are highly trained to create an incredible experience, whether it need be in American Sign Language, or in 9 other spoken languages.

Community Driven by Bob Fitzgerald
ince opening the doors to Concours Elite in Chico just over thirty years ago, I have been asked one question repeatedly and in greater frequency with each passing year, “How do you do it?” The definitive answer has changed over the years as I learned new ways to promote and grow my business, but two parts of that answer have remained consistent: provide quality customer service to each and every client and above all else be fully

involved in your community. Community involvement is key to running any business successfully and as I’ve come to find, it is paramount to living a balanced life. Often times we find ourselves so tied up with work that we tend to forget that anything else exists at all. I, too, fell into this trap when I started my business; days passed in rapid succession, weeks began to blend together, and in the end I felt nothing but exhausted. I finally pulled back on the reigns, deciding to slow the pace down a bit and started to put some of my focus into the world around me. I involved myself in different community fundraising events, charity work and networking groups committed to making a difference locally. The resulting change was immediately noticeable both in

myself and my business. Over my thirty years as owner of Concours Elite, I’ve learned quite a bit about myself, my industry and most importantly, my community. I’ve been blessed to experience the support a community like ours provides to those that support it, and believe me, the support I’ve received from the community has been exponentially greater. As a member of the Chico Noon Exchange Club, Chico LeTip and a number of other fantastic local groups, I found balance with work, and through it have been both successful AND happy, a combination that is more and more rare in this day and age. Nowadays when people ask me how I did it, my answer is significantly more clear, “with my community.”

H ist o r y B u ff No history lesson would be complete without a stop by the Chico Museum. Located on the corner of 2nd and Salem Streets, this wonderful cornerstone of downtown Chico is currently showcasing an exhibit on the history of the bicycle alongside the permanent McIntyre Gallery which details Chico’s rise since 1830. Researching the area’s history in a bit more detail is easy at the Chico State Library’s microfiche center. Virtually travel back in time through nearly a century’s worth of newspapers. Finally, a stop into Collier’s Hardware on the corner of 1st and Broadway downtown always seems to get an amazing story about old Chico.

F o o die Chico simply wouldn’t be Chico without its foodie scene. If you’re looking for some of the best eats downtown, make sure to stop by Monks Wine Lounge, Spice Creek Cafe or Leon Bistro. Extensive wine lists, artful culinary creations and attentive service will keep you in your seat throughout the evening. If you’re looking to take something home, stop by Zucchini and Vine downtown, or The Galley on 551 Country Dr. off of Skyway. These locations are foodie paradise! Boasting impeccable taste in kitchenware and household must-haves, you can be sure you’ll find something worth drooling over here.

LOCAL ARTIST PROFILE
Lauren Lindstrom
Interviewed by Briana Lindstrom From Enloe Hospital to Chico High, Sierra Nevada Hoodies to barefoot Upper Park hikes, Lauren was born and raised on the green streets of Chico. On paper she is a well-traveled Industrial Design graduate of California College of the Arts; on canvas she is bold, uninhibited and playful; in person she is charming, gorgeous and articulate. After traveling in Asia for a year, she is back in town to soak in the heat of a Chico summer and reconnect with family. She is one of my favorite artists and people of all time, and I am proud and excited to share a glimpse of my sister’s talent and personality with you! 58
UL: How did you get into painting? LL: For a while I was focused on realism and the best way to do that is with colored pencil, something with more control. I decided I wanted to try something where the outcome was more heavily influenced by the medium, so I started painting. UL: Does your degree in design influence your paintings? LL: It helps me try to keep it simple. That’s the biggest thing i’ve learned in design. Simplicity is really important and beautiful. UL: How do you begin a painting: LL: I usually pick a palette and start with some thicker brush strokes and see if it leads me somewhere. A lot of times I’ll start a painting and put it down for a really long time and then come back to it and go over it in a completely different way. It’s a lot of building. I never have a vision of what the painting is going to be, it changes over time and at some point it feels like it’s complete. UL: What are 3 words you describe yourself with? LL: Quirky, curious, uninhibited.
UPGRADED LIVING | MAY 2012 | UPGRADEDLIVING.COM
UL: Does your art express those 3 words? LL: Definitely. Especially uninhibited. UL: What artists inspire you? LL: Joshua Dildine is amazing. He’s the most modern artist that i’ve loved in a long time. He has an amazing way with color and depth without portraying anything at all. Gerhard Richter. William Kentridge. I think Dali has a great attitude for an artist. And Anselm Kiefer. I like the way he uses raw materials as well as paint. UL: Have you learned anything about yourself, or the world through your own artistic process? LL: I’ve had to kind of develop a stronger sense of myself and had to have a certain unique type of confidence since i’ve started painting because a lot of my work is abstract and it won’t always be well received. There will be a lot of people who won’t understand it. I have to trust myself and my ability to see something that is art and trust that it is art. UL: What is your favorite quote? LL: “A work of art is the unique result of a unique temperament” --Oscar Wilde

rom Retro Funk to Boho Beauty to Unique Chic; Chico has many different options with local clothing stores that can help spice up the clothing you are probably tired and bored of. All of the pieces featured are sure to take your everyday white tee shirt and jeans combo to the next level. Fashion should be fun and stores like Konjo, The Funky Trunk, and 360 Ecotique are key components to making your closet more exciting. Take a peek into the future of your new wardrobe! Walking into the Funky Trunk is refreshing all on its own. There are racks of consignment pieces: vests, shirts, pants, and many unique dresses. The accessories are phenomenal and sure to shine on any outfit. Owner Sharon Nilsson told us that choosing clothing should be fun, and color is always better! 1 Jewelry is a must, especially when given the opportunity to choose from the many quirky options at the Funky Trunk! 2 Scarves and belts are great additions to any outfit to bring texture, pattern and color. Upon walking through the door of Konjo, you get the feeling of being in a sanctuary; a sanctuary of clothing that is! There are choices upon choices when picking the perfect blouse or top. Many of the pieces have a floaty, fresh appeal to them. The quality of the clothing is prevalent and you know that these items are not one time wear only. They are the pieces you go to continuously because you feel great in them, while making a statement. Store owner Lily Liebenberg hand-picks everything that is sold in the store and you can see the passion for fashion she has through the products. 3 Adding hats and natural flare, like feather earrings, to pastel color main pieces keeps your look updated for Spring. 4 Colorful watches and sunglasses are the perfect summer touch! We love that our local boutiques carry locally made clothing! 360 Ecotique has local Chico written all over it. The store is decorated shabby chic with refurbished mirrors and an earthy feel. The clothing is a mixture of quality consignment with great non-used items as well. This is the place to be when looking for that particular dress or accessory that wows the crowd. Everything you see has a special feeling to it. Many of the jewelry items are handcrafted. Even some clothing pieces have been transformed from something common to something fabulous, like these shorts picked by 360 Ecotique owner Crystena Hemingway. We love the studs on the back of the shorts and how they are hand painted. These say “Summer Fun loud and clear! 360 has an array of gorgeous shoes and purses guaranteed to make you feel like the fashionista you are. 5 Top off your new outfit with a hat!
