COOL KID: MICHAEL GUIFFERE Nothing is more unpredictable than our journey through life. Sometimes life throws us a curveball. Sometimes it feels like we’ve hit a homerun. The exciting and often challenging obstacles we may face— whether in life or in the game—are only as powerful as the team standing by your side.

Admirable seventeen year old Michael Giuffre has had two heart conditions, yet that hasn’t stopped him from committing to his passion for sports. The first condition was Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), which caused him to be born with a hole in his heart. At just eight days old Michael had a surgery to fix this condition. Michael’s second surgery happened just last year to fix another condition, the narrowing of his aorta. Despite these surgeries, Michael has always an unwaveringly bright outlook on life. Though he has had two surgeries, nothing has ever really stopped Michael. He explained the most difficult part of his journey was growing up. He was behind most kids for a while; he didn’t start walking until he was 18 months old. However, this is the only thing that has been challenging for Michael, which is truly incredible! Hard-working—any athlete must have this attribute to be successful, but Michael’s dedication to his passion is truly inspiring. Michael plays a variety of sports year-round. From baseball to basketball, and cross country to soccer, sports have always had a significant impact on his life. Michael’s doctors told him in seventh grade he would
not be able to play football. Nonetheless, his health has never limited his ability to play any other sport. Like Michael described to me, it is remarkably valuable to see people for who they are—one’s hopes, dreams, beliefs— instead of letting their disabilities affect your opinion of someone. As in everyday life, no one is perfect. Whether you’re having an off day or you strike out at your game, at the end of the day, we’re all on the same team. Through Michael’s journey, he has received an immense amount of support from friends, family, and the community. Every journey has its ups and downs, but what makes Michael’s story so inspirational is his positive outlook through life. “I have learned to look on the positives of life and to not dwell on the past,” Michael states with a smile clear across his face. Thankful—Michael’s two conditions have left him stronger both physically and mentally. “I am lucky to have had VSD because if I hadn’t, they wouldn’t have found, or fixed, the narrowing of my aorta.” Encouragement from his parents have shaped Michael into the outgoing person that he is today. He is constantly encouraging and cheering for his teammates in every sport he plays. Michael’s positivity in life has inspired many, and I know he will continue to inspire others for the rest of his life. His heart conditions have never stopped him from achieving anything—earning him the well deserved title of MVP.

at her, instead, they were directed at Kevin. He asked how Kimberly was sleeping and whether or not she had seemed like herself. Kevin replied that she had been sleeping an average of one hour each night and hadn’t seemed herself; one minute she was fine, and the next he would find her sobbing. The OB then redirected his attention to Kimberly, notifying her that her change in behavior was consistent with perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMADs) and that, if untreated, it could become significantly worse for herself and her newborn. PMADs refer to a group of symptoms that are known to affect women both during pregnancy and shortly after giving birth, causing emotional and physical strain that makes it difficult to enjoy life and function normally. Depression, bipolar behaviors, anxiety, panic attacks, and disinterest in caring for one’s baby are all signs of PMADs. Hesitant to take medications while producing milk for Elliot, she voiced her concerns, and her OB assured her that there were medications available that would have little to no affect on her baby, but would still return her to her normal self. He was most concerned about how a sick mom could care properly for her baby. Kimberly decided to try her OB’s recommendation. Within six months, she was fully back to her normal self and was no longer anxious about caring for Elliot. She found herself surprised that it took so long for someone to ask her about her mental state, as delivering and caring for a premature baby tends to be far more stressful than a full-term birth. Over the years, and after a second premature birth, she found that she wasn’t alone. In fact, after moving back to California, she discovered that many mothers and mothers-to-be weren’t being asked about their mental state during or after their pregnancy at all. Statistics show that one in five women experience a form of PMADs during pregnancy and another one in seven do after childbirth, so the lack of including mental health questions in an OB appointment seemed like an oversight. The effects, if untreated, can be devastating for mother and child. Determined to change this, Kimberly joined Mothers Strong, a collaborate made up of mothers and medical professionals for women who have experienced or are experiencing the effects of PMADs.
CHAMPION MOM
Kimberly Armstrong Originally from Roseville, Kimberly Armstrong moved to Paradise in 8th grade. She studied at Chico State and eventually moved to Washington state to pursue a career in the banking industry. It was there that she met her husband, Kevin, and settled down. The two found that they were expecting their first child after three years of trying to conceive, and began preparing to welcome their baby into the world like all new parents do. They couldn’t, however, prepare for what came next. Kimberly went into labor with her daughter, Elliot Parker, at 28 weeks without even knowing it. Actually, it wasn’t until visiting her obstetrician (OB) during a routine appointment at 30 weeks that she found out she had been in labor for two weeks. Her OB acted quickly to delay delivery, but could only delay the delivery for so long. Elliot Parker was born 2 months premature at 4 pounds 4 ounces, and spent the following 49 days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) before being released. At 60 days after delivery, Kimberly and Kevin had another appointment with her OB. To her surprise, the questions he asked weren’t directed
Beyond just providing support to other mothers like herself, Kimberly and many of the other members of Mothers Strong spend their time advocating for change in their local communities. They meet with doctors and midwives to discuss their experiences and shed light on the experience of being a mother affected by PMADs; they hope that, through their experiences, more attention will be given to this important issue. With a healthy mind, successful career, and two healthy children who are now four and seven years old, Kimberly couldn’t be more thankful for the intervention provided by her OB and husband all those years ago. To mothers who experience any of the associated symptoms of PMADs, she encourages them to, “Reach out for help—reach out to your MD, your OB, your husband, a psychiatrist, your family or friends. Let them know you need help and don’t be embarrassed by it. Embarrassment won’t save you or your baby.” She also encourages families and friends of new mothers to be on the lookout for noticeable changes in mood or personality and to discuss it with them. If they don’t notice it themselves, and most of them won’t, it’s important to seek out and provide the help necessary to guarantee the health of mother and child.

THE BEST COUNTRY AND TALK RADIO IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA!
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: 365CHICO SUBJECTS: JACKSON INDAR, COURTNEY BURNS, AYE JAY MORANO, STEPHANIE JOHNSON
GETTING TO KNOW CHICO: ONE PHOTO AT A TIME If you have ever been to a local show or venue, chances are, you have crossed paths with Sesar Sanchez. From being ubiquitously active in the music community to capturing people’s passions and voices with his photography project, 365Chico, he has truly established himself as a Chico institution. Though it may seem the 35-year-old is every bit a Chico native, commuting to events and work via bicycle wielding a messenger bag stocked with a Klean Kanteen and camera, he didn’t make take residence in the City of Trees until his early 20s. Originally born in Gilroy and raised in Salinas, he graduated from Salinas High in 1999. Afterwards, he made his way to Hartnell College, a community college in the Salinas area. In 2002, Sesar’s best friend, David (TK), made the move to Chico and inspired the then 22-year-old to do the same thing. “I came to Chico and never left,” he said.
Sesar began working at the Music Connection after he arrived, the same job he has held for all of his 14 years in Chico. It was the same friend that inspired the move from Salinas that made Sesar take interest in guitar, which ultimately led him to pursue music as a career choice. In those first few years, he attended Butte College and transferred to Chico State in 2005 and planned to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in music. After graduation, he began building and joining eclectic bands around Chico. Continuing to frequently play shows and go on tour up and down the West Coast, in recent years, Sesar has been responsible for providing a pulse to the Chico music scene, booking and promoting shows at the Maltese, Monstro’s Pizza, Café Coda, and 1078 Gallery. And just as he approached playing a low-tuned guitar in his bands Teeph and Cold Blue Mountain, in September of 2014, he took to photography by drawing inspiration from friends and fellow artists. 17
He began by setting out to represent local bands by bringing his camera to shows, taking photos of the bands and helping their image by representing them with his photographs. He met new friends in the process who would come into frame later on. After more than half a year of taking photos, it began to feel like he lost momentum and wanted to switch things up to be more involved in photography. This led Sesar to start 365Chico at the beginning of this year. His objective: to photograph people of every talent, occupation and faculty. Every day. For a year. “I get to meet up with people every day and talk to them,” Sesar said. “Sometimes we talk about big broad things, sometimes it’s short and to the point.” The project began with Sesar’s close friends being the first subjects, ‘test sampling ’ as he calls it. Initially, he wanted to include and reach out to people—anyone—wanting to be a part of the project. Soon enough, he had complete strangers contacting him to be a part of 365Chico and began booking months in advance. He remembers those first few interviews being challenging, getting in front of strangers and taking their photo, but as he started to develop a style and format to follow, it became more about emotion and less about mechanics. He began to focus on the scene and the subject, and consequently, the photography gave him the ability to be more in the moment not only with that person, but with himself, and question certain things that are going on in his own life. As the project comes to a close, Sesar continues to focus on each day with each photograph. And just like the subjects featured on 365Chico, those who have made an effort in opening up and getting out of their comfort zone, Sesar looks forward to getting out of his own comfort zone by not planning too far ahead into the future and being in the moment, an outlook that led him to pick up a camera in the first place. “In order for me to grow, I have to let go of the things that both I’m secure with and the things that hold me back at the same time,” Sesar said.

M E TABOLIC MAS T ERY AT WHOLE BODY FITNESS Many things circle the minds of those looking to workout. Depending on their goal, one may feel self conscious working out in a gym. Other worries may be that they aren’t capable of losing weight or gaining muscle due to genetics or metabolism. Often times, people have tried many different workout routines and popular diets with minimal impact and no lasting success. These factors often result in giving up or not getting the best workout for your body. Past Nord Avenue on Highway 32 lies a massive facility that has been completely designed with the individual in mind—a formula specifically engineered to help people overcome the traditional barriers to health and fitness. The fact is, there is no “one training program” that works for all. The human body is extremely complex and adapts to changes in habits. Because of this, no two bodies are the same, and the same training will not be effective for two different people. At Whole Body Fitness, this fact is embraced by a dedicated staff of over 30 trainers and registered dietitians who have made it their life goal to identify the best possible way for individuals to get the body they want. Many of us dream and strive for the goal of creating the perfect version of ourselves. This drive has caused a surge of techniques that often claim to offer instant gratification in the form of a gimmicky workout tool or pill. In reality, there is no one easy way to get in shape. There 20
U P G R A D E D L I V I N G M AG A Z I N E D E C E M B E R 201 6
is, however, a science behind success. Team members at Whole Body Fitness analyze every individual who signs up to assess their daily activities. The information consists of daily meals, activity level, healthy and unhealthy habits, and more. The goal of this assessment is to determine exactly where your body and metabolism are currently functioning in order to chart a course to help you achieve the results you desire. When you sign up at Whole Body Fitness, you are given access to their nutritional and fitness app. The easy-to-use interface and the ability to keep track of goals is extremely helpful, but the true treasure behind the app is the direct line to the professionals at Whole Body Fitness. The app gives you access to a personal trainer and registered dietician who each hold themselves accountable for your success. Using the app, you record your meals and activities, and that information goes directly to your assigned nutrition coach. These easy checklists give trainers a look into your progress and allow them to give you personalized tips based off of your data. One of the most impressive stories told to me was of a client who was traveling for work. His trainer asked him where he was going to be staying. After finding out the hotel, he was messaged by his dietitian who had looked up information regarding restaurants in the area that served food to meet his dietary goals. As a result, this client was able to maintain his healthy routine; even while traveling.
It is interactions such as this that raise Whole Body Fitness above other gyms and workout routines. The personal touch makes a huge difference in motivation and success. The interior of Whole Body Fitness is one of the most spacious I have ever seen. There is a great deal of room to stretch, workout, and most of all feel comfortable. I was impressed to see trainers working with each and every client to ensure safe exercise and maximum impact. Each room is laid out to entertain multiple workout styles from cardio to weight training to Olympic lifting. The gym also holds classes in which groups are put together based on similar goals and training needs. Whole Body Fitness is offering something that has been lacking in the field for far too long. The experts at this gym are merging physiology with metabolic science to provide a service to the average person to achieve the body they want and deserve.
The man who championed this technique understands what it is like to feel out of control in terms of body and fitness. When Angelo Poli underwent back surgery, his future as a trainer was uncertain. During and after his recovery, he pushed on and continued to train himself and others. He notes that for almost ten years, he was known as the “trainer who walked with a cane.” Because of his limited mobility, he spent much of his time studying metabolic science and the genetics related to fitness. Angelo’s program is unlike most diets and exercise routines that are too general and “cookie cutter” or “one size fits all.” As Angelo applied this research to clients, he discovered the impact it made in weight loss and muscle gain when looking at the body from a scientific perspective based on the individual, not the general population. This is something that had been absent from the world of health and fitness. He has filled in the missing link using his clients’ individual responses and changes relating to nutrition and exercise. Ultimately, this led to the beginning of Whole Body Fitness, which has been a fresh start for him as well as hundreds of area residents who have found success.
MetPro is the second company that Angelo founded using his knowledge of metabolic sciences and personal training. The goal of MetPro is to bring the techniques practiced at Whole Body Fitness to a global audience. It allows people outside of Chico to access the online services provided by Angelo and his team. The program has been used by NFL players, olympic athletes, as well as by A-List celebrities and busy business executives who have been struggling to create healthy routines. Angelo’s process has even been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Men’s Health, and Sports Illustrated. Chico area residents can be happy to know that they have access to these powerful tools through the team at Whole Body Fitness, right in their own back yard. YOUR HEALTH TIPS TO SURVIVE THE HOLIDAYS
As Bereavement Coordinator for Paradise Hospice, I understand that the holiday season can be a very difficult time for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. At a time when everyone is supposed to be happy and enjoying themselves, the bereaved can feel sad, lonely, and depressed. HINTS FOR HEALING Knowing that grief during the holiday season can cause intense pain, I would like to offer some tips to help you get through this difficult time of the year: Be gentle with yourself and set limitations. Realize that it isn’t going to be easy. Do the things that are very special and important to you. Do the best you can. Don’t be afraid to make changes. Family traditions can bring us comfort, but tradition can also magnify the pain of your loss. It’s OK to decide not to put up the tree, host the family dinner at your house, send greeting cards—the list goes on. Know that whatever you choose to do this year, you may decide to handle things differently next year. It’s important to remember that it’s the anticipation of any holiday that is so much harder than the actual holiday. You will survive the holidays. Take good care of yourself, and reach out for support if you need it. Try not to be alone. Feel free to call friends and family and ask for their companionship. Plan ahead to spend time with those you are close to. 22

GAIN STRENGTH FROM OTHERS Sometimes one of the best ways to manage grief is to find a support group made up of people who have been through or are going through the same experience you are. The Paradise Hospice Bereavement Program offers support through organized groups. We have a weekly breakfast group, the Brunch Bunch, that provides bereavement support in a social setting. The group meets on Fridays at 9:30 a.m. At the Cozy Diner on the Skyway in Paradise. Grief support groups are also offered three to four times a year. Emotional support is provided through regular phone calls and visits as needed, and a memorial service —“Day of Remembrance” is held every October and “Light up a Life” is held every December. Call 530.877.8755 for more information on these and other support groups!

The Need for
Needling!
Among the newest advances in skin care technology is radio-frequency microneedling. It is a minimally invasive, nonsurgical procedure that creates a controlled thermal injury underneath the skin’s surface. The body’s response is to produce more collagen, thereby plumping and thickening the skin to reduce the appearance of scars, stretch marks, and fine lines. This treatment has been proven to be very effective for acne scarring, though it may look slightly worse during the healing process! First, a topical anesthetic (like Lidocaine) is applied to numb the area for patient comfort. Then our Infini RF system is applied to the skin, where a sterile tip containing very fine needles delivers the thermal energy deep into the dermis for maximum collagen stimulation. The serial insertion of the tip minimizes discomfort, and recovery is quick and easy.
Because hearing is a wonderful gift!
“Inspired to Help” “Every patient I help so inspires me when I see — through their renewed better hearing — how they are reconnected with loved ones; and I am so happy to be a part of that process. This procedure, also known as Collagen Induction Therapy, creates thousands of thermal coagulation zones through the insulated micro-needles to the treated area. Some redness and swelling is normal and usually dissipates in 24–36 hours. Some changes may be visible immediately after treatment, but collagen continues to rebuild for several weeks, up to 6 months. For optimum results, a series of treatments may be recommended. Skin will be rejuvenated; smoother, tighter, and skin care products will be absorbed faster and more efficiently. Post-procedure, the skin must be protected with an SPF of 30+ to guard against hyperpigmentation. Consultations are always free at the Derm Bar Med-Spa. You’ve begun taking a new prescription and soon realize your symptoms are not going away. Or maybe you’re experiencing new side effects as a result of taking these medications. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of being your own advocate in managing and understanding the medication you’re taking. If you don’t understand what you’re taking and why you’re taking it, then keep asking questions until you’re confident in your knowledge. You can ask for a medication education print out that you can refer to later. MEDICATION SAFETY TIPS: • Make a medication list and keep it with you. Create a list of all medications, dose, directions, including over-thecounter medications and dietary supplements. Share the list with a family member or caretaker who can provide the information in an emergency. Keep the list up to date when changes in your medications are made or when you stop taking a medication. • Share the list with your doctors and health care provider. If you see more than one doctor, be sure they all know what the others are prescribing. Provide your medication list to you provider at every visit. This will prevent duplicate medication therapies. Have a “brown bag” checkup once a year. This involves putting all your medications (in their containers), including over-thecounter medications and supplements, in a paper bag and bringing them to your health care provider’s office to determine whether they are all needed and if there is a potential for drug

interactions or dosage adjustments. It also helps identify expired and nolonger needed medicines. • Know what your medication is used for. Knowing why you are taking a medication will help you understand if the medication is working or if you are experiencing any problems from the medication. • Ask questions of your pharmacist. Pharmacists can provide additional services that can help you understand your condition and how to manage it and your medication. He or she is trained to review your medications and discuss potential problems and options. • Read medication labels and follow directions. Create a reminder system that works for you, whether it’s a pill box, alarm on your phone, calendar, or handwritten notes. • Dispose of your stopped and expired medications. For safety and to protect the environment, you can dispose of your old medications at community drop-off centers and take-back events, including Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Locations (1-866-HAZCATT), and drug disposal kiosks in participating pharmacies.

BEAUTY Q&A A Fitting Solution…
Are you missing a tooth? Are you missing multiple teeth? Or are you missing all of your teeth? Dental implants will give you back what you’ve lost. Eating, smiling, and laughing are simple pleasures you will want to enjoy throughout life. Typically, implant placement needs just one visit, requires only local anesthetic, and typically takes about 60 minutes. Once placed, an implant requires some time to “Osseointegrate.” Osseointegration is the healing process when bone matures and condenses around the implant. This can take anywhere from three to six months. This “Osseointegration” allows the implant to become a solid base for a single tooth, a bridge, or to lock in a denture. Your provider will use a medical grade 3D digital x-ray device to capture crystal clear images of your jaw, then sit down with you and discuss your best options. Patients who have had implants placed are surprised at how easy the process is. They are also pleased with the beautiful results. Frustrated denture wearers found themselves forgetting they were wearing dentures altogether! Enjoy living your life with the confidence that dental implants can provide. E R A S I N G T H E PA S T When getting a tattoo, people often hear the phrase, “Be careful. That is going to be on you forever.” For a long time, this rung true. However, with the advancement of technology in the dermatology field, there are options for removal. Whether the art didn’t turn out how you wanted it or it is a reminder of something painful, you can look into the option of laser tattoo removal. We sat down with Dr. Kafele Hodari of Rejuvené to find out more. How long does the process usually take? It varies. It often takes somewhere between eight and 12 sessions. It depends on the size of the tattoo and the ink used. Green is notorious for being difficult to remove but it’s not impossible. What does the process entail? The laser is designed to avoid damage to the skin itself. It penetrates the skin and breaks up the ink. It basically breaks up the ink into tiny particles and the body’s immune system can absorb that. From the patient’s perspective, the treatment itself takes 15 to 20 minutes. The patient can stick out their arm, for example, and the nurse will clean the area. When then turn the laser on and go over the area multiple times. How should one prepare for the procedure? Just be as informed as they can about the treatment. Recognize that it can be painful but there are things we can do to treat the pain. It is a little uncomfortable so sometimes we will put a topical numbing ointment on. As I mentioned, it can take multiple appointments so patience is key.
It should also be noted that patients should eliminate unprotected sun exposure to the area within four weeks before the treatment. They should also avoid self tanners. Be sure to let your doctor know if you have taken any blood thinners as well. Does tattoo removal cause scarring or discoloration? Sometimes there can be incomplete removal. Sometimes the skin can end up a little lighter which is called hypopigmentation. It is usually much less noticeable than the tattoo itself. Most people would prefer to have that than the tattoo. Are there any instances in which tattoo removal does not work? Situations in which tattoo removal might not be an option are: open wounds in the area, pregnancy, or having taken accutane in the last six months. Tattoo removal is also not recommended for anyone with seizure disorders or diseases such as Lupus that flare with light exposure.

STRATEGY VS GUIDANCE It might not feel like it, but there’s never been a better time to be an investor. Trading is cheaper than ever, fund and ETF expenses are coming down and investing is now available to all, regardless of class. Information on stocks, historical returns and funds is available with a few mouse clicks. It’s true that anyone can create a portfolio, asset allocation or investment strategy. It’s not hard to do given the online tools, calculators and overwhelming amount of information available. However, investment selection and asset allocation (i.e. investment strategy) is just one part of being a successful investor. The second part is personalized financial guidance. Financial guidance is essential as goals, income, risk tolerance and family dynamics change numerous times during a person’s lifetime. A guide can help you stay disciplined when a theoretical portfolio meets real world challenges and the highs and lows of markets. Long-term success for investors is a combination of a sound investment strategy and personalized financial guidance. Both are important but different parts of successful financial plan.

Holiday Rejuvenation The holidays can be just as stressful as they are uplifting. We get to spend valuable time with family and friends, but the experience doesn’t come without a fair share of work. Cooking, cleaning, and preparing for visitors takes its toll on our bodies and, though the season is about giving, we often forget to take time and give to ourselves. Rejuvené wants to make the holidays a bit brighter for everyone with a selection of invigorating spa services that are sure to revitalize even the weariest of us. Rejuvené’s Elegant Escape is a luxurious and transformative experience that combines the best of skincare and body massage to provide the ultimate relaxation event. The 2-hour treatment begins with a visit to Erin, their cosmetologist and skincare specialist, who provides a comprehensive facial that clears the skin of impurities and hydrates it to ensure that it’s ready to take on the drying effects of cold winter weather. With a refreshed face, the experience concludes in a full-body massage by Jan, Rejuvené’s certified massage therapist. This combination of services creates a wonderful gift for yourself or someone you love, and is the perfect way to relieve the mind, body, and spirit of stress during the holiday season. The renowned and award winning Hydrafacial is another way to treat yourself this holiday season. In less than one hour, this medical grade facial procedure hydrates, cleanses, and exfoliates facial tissue while simultaneously extracting imperfections and providing antioxidant protection. The skin is left feeling smooth, well-moisturized, taught and lifted. The treatment is non-invasive, has virtually no downtime and is very well tolerated. In addition, the ability to customize each treatment by adding specialty serums and modalities such as the blue or red LED lights (as shown) further enhances the treatment. With the busy nature of the holiday season, a quick Hydrafacial treatment is the perfect getaway in the middle of a hectic day or at the end of a long work week! Other individual spa services include a variety of facials like the Signature Facial, MicroEuropean Facial, HydraEuropean Facial, ZO Euro Plus Brightening Facial, and the SkinMedica Rejuvenating Facial, which offer customized treatments for anyone concerned with the effects of aging skin. The SkinMedica facial, in particular, achieves the ultimate in cellular stimulation and cellular turnover for maximum exfoliation. It uses potent growth factors, antioxidants, hyaluronic acid and peptides to provide incredible firming and repair with just a short visit and no downtime. Rejuvené also offers a number of peels to provide your skin with a fresh new start. Regardless of which service you choose, you can be sure that your skin will achieve the healthy and beautiful glow you’re looking for. Just as the holidays are stressful for ourselves, you can be sure they’ll be stressful for those in which we care. A gift certificate to Rejuvené is the perfect way to let someone know you’re thinking of them and nothing is more welcomed during the holiday season than the gift of relaxation.

vertebrae and a cracked skull. He was rushed to Feather River Hospital and then to Enloe for surgery. After six screws in his neck, 30 pounds of weight loss, and 41 days of recovery at Enloe, his doctors provided Patty with a list of rehabilitation facilities for continued care. She visited several, but ended her search at Twin Oaks Post Acute Rehab as it was the first that felt like home. The staff was super friendly and the location felt right, so Monty moved in that evening. There was a remarkable amount of work to be done. 30 pounds underweight, and unable to use his tongue properly due to the breaking of his vertebrae, Monty was unable to swallow food normally and had been receiving IV fluids since his arrival at Enloe. A speech therapist trained him to properly use his tongue again and, within weeks, he was back to eating food normally. He slowly but surely regained nearly all of the 30 pounds he had lost. Physical and occupational therapists on Monty’s therapeutic team worked with him on his balance and helped with strengthening exercises for his neck as well. He had lost a lot of muscle mass throughout his body but, with the help of the staff at Twin Oaks, was able to restore much of his strength.
A HAPPY HOMECOMING
for Monty Monty Vanbibber moved to Monterey, California two years after completing his service in the United States Air Force. A rodeo junkie as a kid, he broke his fair share of bones and was never a stranger to injury or the lengthy process of healing. He began working in the bar business when he arrived in Monterey and remained there with his wife, Patty, until visiting his oldest daughter, who lived in Paradise, in 1983. As she and her husband were vegetarians, Monty inquired as to where they could get a good burger in the area. She pointed him to Barney O’Rourkes and, after enjoying his first burger there, decided to buy the restaurant. He and Patty moved to Paradise and have lived there since. In January, Monty broke his hip and began using a walker to self-rehabilitate and help him get around after his visit to the hospital. By June, he had become dependent on the walker and, during a visit to the bathroom, fell and hit his head on the door jamb when his walker tipped over. The fall was significant, resulting in the breaking of his first three
Monty spent 70 days at Twin Oaks and has been recovering healthily since. As Patty is quick to mention, “They made him work for it. They pushed him to get better and they were all great to work with. There were a lot of activities for patients to do together that made the rehabilitation process more fun. It was like a rec center in there! The residents were all so friendly and everyone knew each other’s names; they all seemed to be happy.” Monty echoed the same sentiments and points out that he wouldn’t have been able to heal as quickly or to the level that he did without their help. Monty returned home with a new friend from the experience as well. Shadow, the adorable puppy in the above photo, was adopted by Monty and Patty as his owner was moving into Twin Oaks permanently at the time. Shadow and Monty had developed such a close friendship during his time at Twin Oaks that Shadow’s owner thought Monty and Patty would give Shadow the perfect new home. From our time with them, it’s clear that she was right.

Christmas Estate Gifts The holidays are a time of giving joy, and sometimes money. We have talked about wills and trusts for after death giving, but what about gifts here and now? Here and now gifts have the big advantage, in that you can enjoy watching them being received. Gifts are often part of estate planning and can be great fun as well. This year you can gift up to $14,000 per person to anyone without a gift tax. That means that you and your spouse can gift up to $28,000 this year to your child or to each of your children without any reduction of the total estate tax exemption. This gift could also be used to transfer some stock in a small family business corporation to the next generation and keep the kids in the business. In a future article I will address why you may want to incorporate your business, and how incorporation can help with rewarding good employees as well as generational gifting. This kind of tax exempt gift can take many forms, but is always a big hit on Christmas morning. Be sure to talk to your tax professional before you give this kind of gift. Let us not forget that this is also a great time of year to do some charitable gifting. There are many hard working, charitable organizations in our community that do great work every day for those in need. They can always use your help. A nice gift in the name of your loved ones to the local humane society, hospital, Boys and Girls Club (just to name a few) is a great gift. You may also want to give them an estate gift in your will or trust. Many of these organizations can set this up for you free of charge. Talk to them and your tax professional before you give. You will feel great and may save a little tax money. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! BOB PEARSONS J.D, M.A Persons & Miller Attorney 1209 Esplanade #4 Chico, CA 95926 530.893.0717

NEW AGAIN KITCHEN REMODELING PRESENTS HOUSE CALL:
AN EMPTY NEST UPDATE
THE CLIENT Mark and Dami Hammer moved to Chico from Seattle in 2001 with their four boys. Excited to live near two of their closest friends, the couple found a home that was under construction, but nearing completion, in the new Nob Hill subdivision across Bruce Road from California Park. They were afforded the opportunity to pick the tile and initial paint colors but, as the majority of home buying stories go, the rest was set in stone long before they stumbled upon the property. Over the years, the Hammers’ home saw its fair share of changes. The boys grew up and moved out, the walls changed colors often as Dami searched for the perfect palette, and the once new carpet began to show the wear it had endured over the years. Mark and Dami began to contemplate moving and discussed whether or not to remodel or buy a new house. They toured homes for sale in nearby neighborhoods but, in the end, realized that they loved their location and chose to remodel instead. 42

In 2016, after 15 years in their home, they began the process of remodeling—replacing the old worn carpeting, painting yet again, and finally arriving at their kitchen. The white cabinets that once gleamed had developed creases in the paint and collected grease each time the couple used the stove. The white-with-blue-stripe tile countertops had begun to chip and the grout connecting the tiles was disgusting. They asked friends for recommendations and were referred to New Again Kitchen Remodeling by two friends as well as another local contractor.
THE CALL Mark and Dami met with the local contractor first and received a bid to reface and paint their white cabinets along with another bid to replace them entirely. The couple wanted to modernize the kitchen and were looking for new throughout, but still wanted to make sure they remained on budget. Replacing
the cabinets was going to cost $4,000 more than simply refacing and painting them, so the latter seemed like the more affordable option at the time. They called Ric at New Again Kitchen Remodeling to set up a time for his bid. Mark and Dami met Ric at New Again’s showroom on Park Avenue in Chico later that week. Right away, they were both struck by his personality and knew he cared about what they wanted in their knew kitchen. Ric asked what they didn’t like about their kitchen and discussed the many options that were available to them. They wanted more cabinet space, a more modern look, a spice cabinet, and most importantly, a large island in the center of the kitchen with room for seating. He shared his opinions with them and they found his ideas to be both artistic and creative, a necessity when attempting to overhaul and modernize an entire kitchen.
THE CURE The team from New Again arrived on schedule and began gutting the entire kitchen. Mark and Dami, like many before them, were impressed to find that the owner of New Again Kitchen Remodeling worked on the job along with his contractors to ensure CONNECT
that everything was completed with the utmost attention to detail. The team installed sunway/white shaker cabinets above and below blue pearl granite countertops with a Dawn® stainless steel sink. They tied the cabinets to the countertop using a Bedrosian® mosaic backsplash in a unique marina blue that completely set off the modern nature of the kitchen. The project was completed with Jeffrey Alexander door and drawer hardware throughout and specialty rollout shelves in the pantry and every base cabinet. The result is absolutely breathtaking. Best of all, the entire process took 6 weeks from bid to completion and came in at $9,000 under the first bid they received. When asked about their experience with Ric and the team from New Again, Mark and Dami echoed each other’s sentiments in stereo, “We can’t say enough good things about New Again! Ric was so easy to work with and we loved that he wasn’t going to be satisfied until it was all done just right. He was just great
and wasn’t the traditional, old-school type to just do what everyone else is doing. He has such talent and we really appreciated that about him. The showroom was wonderful too. You could look at everything, see it for yourself, and make the decision there with items in full-size rather than small samples. They were all great to work with—great ideas, design, and work. We would definitely recommend them to friends and family without hesitation, in fact we already have. We’re even thinking about having them back to redo our bathrooms.”
PHOTOS BY FRANK REBELO
They felt he was the right fit, so they requested a bid and found that replacing the entire kitchen using New Again Kitchen Remodeling was a full $9,000 less than the first bid they received from the local contractor. In fact, New Again’s bid to replace the entire kitchen was even $5,000 less than the first contractor’s bid to simply reface and paint the cabinets. Ric even threw in an extra 16” of granite overhang for a total of 20” to make seating more comfortable around the island. The decision was a no-brainer. They signed off on Ric’s bid for the kitchen and he set off to work.
With another kitchen renovation completed beautifully on time and on budget, and with another happy couple on the books, it’s no surprise that New Again continues to make a name for itself as the definitive kitchen and bathroom remodeling company in Chico. If you’re in a situation similar to the Hammers and could use a hand in modernizing your kitchen or bathroom, give them a call today at 530.899.2888.

DECORATING TRENDS How do we know what to put in our homes when we decide to redecorate remodel or redesign a room? This year, I was invited as a guest along with 30 other interior designers to attend the Las Vegas World Market. This experience was different than previous years, as I was able to meet with the top designers that make our world trends and design styles. Here is a look into what is happening for 2017! BASIC DESIGN Today our homes are more open and airy with smooth, clean lines. Contemporary design is back with a transitional look, along with mixing rustic and modern. The “modern farmhouse” style has become more popular, thanks to the hit HGTV show, Fixer Upper. Interior designers are encouraging homeowners to mix materials, such as reclaimed wood with gold or Lucite, or new items with vintage pieces. ART AND ACCESSORIES Grey and white are the new beige. Cobalt blue, turquoise, and green are the new accent colors that are added to neutral backgrounds. Faux Marble can be added to anything such as tabletops, mirrors, vases, or other accessories. Copper and rose gold are not only appearing in fashion jewelry, but they are in curtain rods and home accessories. You will see black stainless steel is in many of the new appliances. Large artwork is much more popular than small and gives the look of a gallery wall. Small and large geometric patterns are a popular trend for rugs, fabrics, tile, and carpet. Shag rugs have become a popular way to add instant texture to a room. Matte paint is now the new finish. 44
U P G R A D E D L I V I N G M AG A Z I N E D E C E M B E R 201 6
WINDOW TREATMENTS AND TEXTILES Home textiles have shiny and metallic threads woven through them. Tribal patterns continue to be popular. Upholstered headboards are trending over wood beds. Bedding should be a mix of color and texture; matchy-matchy bedding sets are out. Window coverings are light and airy with woven woods and screen shade fabrics. Plantation shutters are still looking like a great option for most homeowners, with the cost being much more effective. BATHROOMS AND KITCHENS Tile trends feature large rectangular shapes with geometric shaped accents. Solid Surface is catching up with granite and lighting is most important in these areas, using a lot of pendant and can lights. Keep in mind no matter what the trends are for today, your own personal touch is most important and the best of all trends. That is what makes your house your home and most comfortable to you.

Rebuilding Home Sweet Home There are few experiences that truly test a homeowner like a natural disaster. Often with no warning whatsoever, and certainly without time to prepare, natural disasters can make quick work of a home. Jim and Sandra Holm experienced this firsthand on December 3rd of 2014, watching as water rushed into their Red Bluff home from a flood caused by a broken levee nearby. The flood caused widespread damage throughout the area, stranding drivers on Highway 99 in disabled cars and leaving residents wading through considerable amounts of floodwater in their homes. At Jim and Sandra’s home, the water level rose to 17 inches, damaging walls, submerging electrical outlets, and destroying everything in its path. The home was a loss. The two moved into a fifth wheel camper and set about figuring out how to rebuild their home. Between insurance and a grant that was available for those affected by flooding, Jim and Sandra were able to pull together the money needed to completely gut their home and start over. They used the money from the grant to lift the home and position it high above the water line to keep it out of the path of future flooding and began working on plans with their contractor, Eric Enns, for the rest of the home. When it came to rebuilding their kitchen, Eric introduced them to Chico Custom Cabinetry. We stopped by their recently rebuilt home: UL: What was the kitchen like before the flood? JH: Well, our home was built in 1977 and we bought it in 1994; it was stuck in the 60s from the day we moved in. The ceilings were low throughout the kitchen which made the space feel small and the green tile counters didn’t really make the kitchen look any more modern. A large, eight-foot wall separated the kitchen from the living room which meant that anytime you were in the kitchen, you were sectioned off from everyone else. It wasn’t useful for entertaining at all. There were a number of cabinets that had unusable space and plenty with items in them that weren’t at all easy to get to. It just wasn’t very functional, and the flood actually gave us the opportunity to change everything and rebuild the kitchen the way we wanted. UL: What was the process of rebuilding the kitchen like and what inspired the changes that you decided to make? JH: We began working with Eric Enns in January to rebuild our home and he actually recommended that we work with Chico Custom Cabinetry to figure out the kitchen. We met with John, one of the owners, in February and discussed the situation with him. We told him that we wanted to be able to entertain family and friends in the space and made him aware of the issues we had with its original design over the years. He rough sketched the kitchen for us and went over each area that could use improvement. We put together a plan to remove the large wall that separated the kitchen from the living room and replace it with an island that would allow us to gather when we had company. We also discussed our ideas for the new countertops and he recommended hickory and
maple as their perfect match. John spent a lot of time with us and was really excellent in making sure that all of our wants and needs were met. They were also extremely patient as we had them out in February but weren’t ready to begin work on the kitchen until August as the rest of the house had to be rebuilt first. UL: How did everything turn out in the end? What are some of your favorite additions to the kitchen? JH: We couldn’t be happier! Everything turned out wonderful. Removing the wall made a BIG difference in the kitchen. It allowed us to install the island which has become the focal point of the house as soon as you walk in through the front door. Everyone at Chico Custom Cabinetry really put a lot of thought and effort into it. It’s a piece of art, really, and it ties the rooms together. Now my son-in-law and I get to jam together on our guitars across the island. We decided to go with the natural hickory cabinets and John installed some cool features like a pull-out half moon lazy susan. He and Dave had little ideas on the fly and would just incorporate them while they were installing everything. It took four weeks for them to build all of the cabinets and three days to install the entire kitchen. There’s so much entertaining space and everything finally feels functional. We moved into the finished house in November of last year and we couldn’t be happier. UL: Would you recommend them to friends and family? JH: Our experience was great. We met them early on, nearly eight months before we started. It wasn’t a rush project and they didn’t rush us. They were very easy to communicate with and we absolutely fell in love with them. It became more of a personal thing than anything. They seemed to have such a natural approach, which was important considering the stress we were under. The guys worked great together. Dave was great at problem solving and they put in long hours to make sure everything was right. Above all, we are very pleased with everything. We would absolutely recommend them to family and friends in the future and have multiple times already.

W I N T E R AT T H E M A R K E T Fresh loaves of artisan bread, gleaming jars of sun colored honey, and dark green leafy vegetables are among the local products displayed at the Chico Certified Farmers Market. Artisans from all over Butte County come to show their latest creations, sprinkled amongst the many farmers selling their best produce. Year round, rain or shine, the Saturday morning and Wednesday market are available for all of us to browse. If you haven’t been to our market in the rain, you’re missing out! The hustle and bustle of colorful jackets, slick with water, only heightens the excitement of seeking out the reddest radish or best head of broccoli. A hot cup of Chico Chai, steamed with Beber Almond Milk is the perfect accompaniment to your winter succulent search. Fresh juice vendors like Live Life Juice and OMG OJ are not to be ignored either, as their natural vitamins and minerals will keep you from catching any bad cold that’s going around.
Like some of you, we assumed many of our favorite vendors would hibernate for the cold seasons and be back for summer. Not so! Almost all of the booths and farms you’ve come to recognize at Saturday market will remain the same throughout the season. Olive oil, almond butter, and pottery fans rejoice; your specialty artisan options will continue to be available as well.
“The most rewarding thing about our Farmers Market in the winter is you still feel that sense of community. It hasn’t dropped off the map because it’s no longer summer. Even with changing produce, you still have variety and you still have passionate farmers,” says Kristy Lively, Office Manager for CCFM.

As with anything, there are tricks to shopping local. Kristy says, “I would say the best tip is to walk through the entire thing. I also tend to taste things. What’s the sweetest carrot or the spinach with the most lush green color?” There is so much to learn from our neighborhood farmers and artisans. Utilize their knowledge on the best way to cook with an item or how best to eat it. The luxury of farmers market is that the source of every product is standing in front of you, with calloused hands and a robust passion for produce. Whether you’re shopping for a special Chico treat, like a pastry from the Macaron House or a bar of soothing lavender soap, you can depend on our Certified Farmers Market. Fill your baskets with the freshest leafy greens, root vegetables, and onions in the area. Our farmers thank you! By supporting our local farmers, we also encourage healthy living and organic processes. It’s easy to run to the grocery store when you need something, but how great is it to know with certainty that the farmer who’s bagging your produce actually hand picked that fruit or vegetable. They rinsed it and brought it to the market that morning. There really is no comparison between that type of freshness and the questionable food you so often find at chain grocers.
