It was a little strange to delve into all things holiday in the middle of November, but I certainly didn’t mind. Getting into the Christmas spirit boosted my mood and holiday home decor made an earlier appearance at my place. A couple of extra weeks of tinsel and twinkle lights never hurt anyone, right? It’s also quite fitting The Beatles grace our December issue, the Fab Four was a band who wrote and sang incredible love songs, and during this season, giving a little love is what we’re all about. The gate was created by the talents of Old Chico Iron, you’ll read all about their gift inside. The Beatles’ famed Abbey Road gate is a first of many gifts the metal artists are bestowing to our beautiful community. Christmas time allows room for us to reflect on the things we take for granted, appreciate, and love. This season also welcomes warm thoughts of our loved ones, four-legged ones too. I got that fuzzy reminder putting this magazine together. I sat down with so many family-owned local business owners to hear their story, and it was a brilliant reminder that so many colorful citizens make up this beautiful community. Staying on the theme of giving, we are thrilled to introduce a brand new tech advice section. This month, we ease you into improving your home with some high-tech advancements for a better connection. This issue is packed with good cheer to last throughout the year! Christian Gisborne was destined for a life of music. Having grown up in a musically saturated household (Christian's father is a songwriter/producer who operates the record label, Sound x3, and his mother is a music attorney), his love and interest for all things music stem as far back as he can remember. Although he’s always had a passion for music, it wasn’t until a year ago that the emerging artist considered his passion as a potential career. Christian is 14 years old and a freshman at Inspire School of Art and Sciences, where he has the opportunity to take classes related to his career aspirations, such as recording arts. He plays a variety of instruments including guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and performs vocals; he is influenced by the music of the '60s, especially John Lennon and The Beatles. Christian loves the process of creating as well as performing live. He explains, “It’s like a job, but I enjoy it, so it’s really not.” Additionally, he plays and writes by ear, as he wants to keep his creativity flowing without having to worry about specific types of notes and timing. Christian has a natural ear for music, giving him the rare superpower of being able to dissect and replicate a recording. When Christian was around 6 years old, he started listening to The Beatles, which has turned into his most significant influence, alongside other rock groups like Cage the Elephant and The White Stripes. He even admits to staying home “sick” from school one day just to learn all the lyrics

to a Beatles' tune. When it comes to his songs, Christian recognizes the great impact music has on society and often weaves political messages into his works. He believes, “Music can be a powerful force, as far impacting our ability to alter emotions, attitudes, perceptions, and it can make the world a better place.” About a year ago, Christian put all his focus into the Velvet Starlings, his '60s-influenced indie rock band. He performs with classmates and fronts the group performing lead guitar and vocals. Christian hit the Chico music scene with a bang. He has performed multiple times at Thursday Night Markets, Saturday Farmers Markets, Chico State University, Keep Chico Creative Festival, Sofar Sounds Chico, the Pioneer Day Parade, and out-of-town gigs like, The Gibson Showroom in Beverly Hills. Plans for a spring EP release are in the mix for the young musician. Christian recorded his seven-track EP with his father in May, where he plays all the instruments featured except the drums. With his incredible talent, charisma, and ambition, this Cool Kid is sure to make it far in the music world. Flash forward to today, and we all can recall seeing a cheerful Salvation Army volunteer ringing a bell with a warm smile and greeting. From its initial beginnings, within six years, the red kettle idea spread from Oakland to Boston, providing meals to 15,000 hungry Americans. Today, the Chico Salvation Army celebrates 126 years of bell ringing. Within the U.S., Salvation Army’s efforts annually assist 4.5 million people during Thanksgiving and Christmas. With the help of volunteers, local churches, and nonprofits, the Chico Salvation Army is set to raise $125,000 during the holiday season. Chico’s landscape offers a wealth of volunteer opportunities, but it can be difficult to navigate them. Cyndi Arregui, Salvation Army advisory board member, has been involved with the organization for many years and schedules the bell ringers each season. She described volunteering at Salvation Army as a stepping stone for first-time volunteers who are barely dipping their toes into dedicating their time to a great cause. Ringing the bells this season offers multiple opportunities to interact with community members while collecting money gleefully. Plus, it’s a great way to give back to our community. “Anyone can write a check, but it takes a special person to volunteer their time,” Cyndi added. “When people do that, and they know the money is staying in their community, I think it means a lot more to them.” But where does that money go, and how does it impact the community? Once you gift your generous $1 donation (or more), 83 cents of every dollar dropped into the bucket goes directly back into the community. Funds gathered during the holiday season support 1/5th of Salvation Army’s annual budget. That cost covers clothing, food, and various programs Salvation Army hosts like the Christmas dinner for seniors and the Angel Tree Program.

RINGING IN T H E H OLI DAY CHEER On a cold winter evening in 1891, Salvation Army Capt. Joseph McFee stepped off his Oakland ferry to a heartbreaking scene. The commute was one Joseph was very familiar with, but the daily view of homeless sailors and hungry community members haunted Joseph’s thoughts. His desire to feed those in need weighed heavily on his heart, and he soon made it his goal to provide a Christmas meal to those in his neighborhood. Unfortunately, funds were tight. The solution came to him one evening, and the following morning, Joseph grabbed a metal urn and hung it from a post with a note that read, “Keep the pot boiling!” In hopes to gather funds, Joseph quickly realized ringing a bell caught the attention of commuters, and with brittle, cold fingers wrapped around a silver bell handle, Joseph began collecting the funds to provide a Christmas meal to those in need at the docks. 14

Though 90 percent of their bell ringers are comprised of volunteers, Salvation Army also offers specific individuals who just need a hand up the opportunity for paid work. A good portion of those who provide their time, ring bells to supplement their income. One year, a family from a local shelter was able to save up and move into their own home from bell-ringing earnings. It’s a popular volunteer experience, and it is the time of giving and thinking of others in need. You can catch the cheerful volunteers ringing bells from November 13 through December 24. “We see a need, and we address that, as best we can,” Cyndi said.

As the sun rises, a group of Chico professionals meet over coffee and bagels to brainstorm various ways they can enrich the community. Chico Sunrise Rotary Club is comprised of 50 members, eager to make positive changes. Since 2002, the group of local professionals have joined together and made literacy their focus. With a motto of, “service above self,” it’s no surprise those in the rotary club strive for only the best. When the organization originally formed, their goal was to eradicate polio from the world. Now, the Rotary club has expanded their efforts. Their shared values have changed the lives of young school kids within the Chico area. Since literacy is the group’s focus, Sunrise Rotary gives the gift of paper dictionaries. The generous donation is awarded to underprivileged children who typically do not have books in their home or electronic devices at their fingertips. In the past, the rotary club has been a pivotal force, implementing various literacy-based projects, but lately, the group has volunteered their time and muscle to building projects. To further encourage the importance and love of reading, the Rotary club created an outdoor reading section for McManus Elementary School that includes a mural, tables, chairs, and benches. More recently, the group raised funds to give the entrance of Caper Acres some TLC. They dug a moat, planted trees, and added a concrete bridge—turning the once drab entrance into one fit for childhood royalty. 16

The project cost $35,000, which doesn’t include donations of labor, equipment, and materials from local companies including Slater and Sons, Franklin Construction, Maloney Construction, Spec-West, and Sierra Landscaping. Other sources of funding for projects comes from community donations, grants, and an annual spring gala. Tickets are currently on sale for their fundraiser held every St. Patrick’s Day. Ticket price includes a buffet dinner catered by Bacio, beer, wine, and an auction. Ironclad MAKING OLD CHICO

Collaborating with Old Chico Iron, to preserve Downtown Chico’s Abbey Road mural, has truly been one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling experiences during my past 10 years at Upgraded Living. Finding a business formed by individuals who not only share my fixation with beautifying Chico but are also driven by it in everything they do, was perhaps the best gift I could receive during the holiday season. I am humbled to call these gentlemen my friends and couldn’t have asked for a better group to work with on a project that was so near and dear to my heart. It is that same bonding friendship that initially brought Old Chico Iron’s owners, Grant Stephens and Tim Buckner, together to create a metalwork business rooted in the heart rather than the pursuit of money.

meticulously training him for a career he would be more than ready for, long before graduating from high school. When 1998 rolled around, and his high school years came to a close, the welding field was a no-brainer. Grant took up a position welding at a local metal shop right out of high school, working on various projects for individuals and businesses throughout Chico. In 2001, he met Tim Buckner, a Chico transplant who shared his passion for mountain biking and general disregard for the fragile nature of one’s body. The two became friends instantly and took every opportunity to tear through any mountain bike trail Chico had to offer. When they had exhausted all of their options, they decided to build a mountain bike trail of their own.

Born at Enloe Medical Center in 1980, Grant is a fifth-generation Chicoan. It could be said that his childhood was less than conventional. While friends were running around playing in the streets, Grant was learning how to weld. His grandfather, Albert Stone, was a machine shop operator in Richvale and believed that 6 was the perfect age for Grant to begin his welding apprenticeship. As a man who grew up with eight other siblings in a single room house in Dayton, Albert quickly learned nothing came for free, and he was intent on imparting that wisdom to Grant.

Young and brash, Grant and Tim headed up to Garland Road in Forest Ranch and began carving out trails in what seemed like vacant forest land. The further in they went, the more intricate the trails became, and nothing was off limits. They climbed trees and used them to add layers of difficulty, moved no shortage of earth, and built what any mountain biker would have deemed a slice of heaven. Over three years, the two developed a significant portion of the forested area west of Highway 32, until the track finally grew too large and attracted the eye of authorities. As it turned out, the land was owned by the United State Government and was under the supervision of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The two had a nerve-racking meeting with the land magistrate and, though it could have turned out much worse, they were slapped with a couple of thousand dollars in fines and tasked with returning the land to its original state. Grant and Tim spent the next year of their lives doing just that.

Welding became a form of currency for the two; if Grant wanted lunch money or funds for a new mountain bike, Albert was quick to oblige, but not without requiring some welding work first. This form of business between the two lasted throughout Grant’s childhood and even continued after Albert took up the foreman position at Rancho Llano Seco. Unbeknownst to Grant at the time, his grandfather was

At the end of one of these trips in 2004, Tim’s truck fell apart, and they towed it back to his house. Grant brought a welder over and fixed the broken parts himself. It was Tim’s first exposure to welding; between the inherent danger, sparks, and benefit the skill provided, Tim was hooked; he signed up for a night

welding class at Butte College while studying political science at Chico State University. Eventually, he realized welding was considerably more enjoyable than what he was studying at Chico State, so he left the world of political science behind and decided to focus solely on welding. After a few years, Grant and Tim found themselves on different paths. Grant found his way to the East Bay and began working on the massive Bay Area pipeline construction project for East Bay Mud. Tim moved to Southern California and began welding full-time, eventually finding his way into welding inspection. He went to school to study inspection law, received his necessary licenses, and began doing inspections through American Welding Society for major structural elements, ensuring that construction met seismic requirements. Though the two were in wildly different parts of California, they both grew weary of the same two things: insane traffic and lack of trees; they missed home, and both moved back to Chico in 2010.

receptionist desk at ZAK Scooters on Nord Avenue, and projects for The Banshee, The Handlebar, and The Electric Lounge. Where residential projects are concerned, they work closely with a number of reputable contractors and engineering firms including Alive Engineering and Eric Enns’ Dream Development Company. Those collaborations have resulted in countless projects for homes in the Canyon Oaks area. They also recently completed a giant custom-welded stair set with patiostyle landing for a home on Liberty Lane and an ornate privacy wall for one of Downtown Chico’s private second story lofts. Over the years, the guys have built a reputation for incredible work not just locally, but abroad as well. A collaboration with Jay Nelson, a famed wood artist in San Francisco, resulted in wood and steel showcase Subaru Brat for Subaru of America. More recently, they were commissioned to create a fireball for former San Francisco Giants’ pitcher turned coach, Dave “Rags” Righetti. It was this reputation that brought about the collaboration with myself and Formal Education to preserve a Downtown Chico icon.

They fell back into their natural rhythm and began discussing ideas for the shop they would someday own together. During one of these discussions, the two went out for a drive and happened to the perfect location. Grant had been doing side jobs for his contractor friends for a long time, and he and Tim were both in need of space for their projects. They both wanted to have an outlet to be creative, and the location would give them the opportunity to work on their vehicles, make furniture, and weld whatever came into their mind on any given day. Out of necessity—an excuse most of us guys use when we just want something, like tools or truck—the two contacted the building owner for a tour of the space. As most classic, small-town Chico connections go, the owner also happened to be a mountain biking fanatic. They talked for hours about their individual biking experiences before realizing they were there for business. They signed the lease, and Old Chico Iron was born. Since opening the shop in August of 2015, Grant and Tim have created a good deal of recognizable pieces around town and helped some business owners better realize their vision. Some of their more notable pieces include the bar soffit at Downtown Chico’s new Parkside Taphouse, the beer tap assembly and benches at Naked Lounge, the 19

techniques, and creative touches. Admittedly, I know next to nothing about welding, so most of what was said was lost on me, but by the time I left, the guys were ready to get started on the project. While sitting in on their discussion, it was refreshing to witness everyone not only listening intently to each other but also be able to craft the same vision in tandem. Not only was everyone onboard with the idea, but they were excited, and that excitement was contagious. During the two months that followed, Grant invited me to Old Chico Iron every other week to view the project’s process. We discussed options at each stage, but aside from our specific needs for Formal Education’s operation, there was no sense in impeding any creativity. The team worked tirelessly throughout that two month period and, as promised, delivered the gate exactly on schedule. I could go on and on regarding my personal feelings about it, but I believe the entrance speaks for itself. To say I’m honored to have it in front of Formal Education, at 127 Main St, is an understatement.

THE BEATLES

Change is inevitable, but some changes are more difficult to appreciate than others. When I heard that Will Brady, owner of B Street Public House and Banshee, was planning to open his new restaurant, Bill’s Town Lounge, on Main Street, moving Formal Education from one of Downtown Chico’s busiest blocks to one of its slowest was an easy decision. His bar-restaurants have a way of single-handedly revitalizing entire blocks, bringing new foot traffic to areas that were in decline. The Banshee did it for the north side of Second Street, B Street did the same for the east side of the entrance to Broadway, and I had no doubt Bill’s will do the same for the east side of the exit from Main Street. Naturally, we were excited to be part of that revitalization. Unfortunately, positive change often comes at the hand of sacrifice, and it later became apparent that a restaurant at the old Main Street Music location would require such a sacrifice. As the building is encased on three sides by other buildings, the only location for an emergency exit would be through the facade; the only site that would work in the plans was through Gregg Payne’s 20-year-old Abbey Road mural on the north side of the building. On the one hand, you have a new restaurant that provides 20 new jobs and revitalizes an area of Downtown Chico in noticeable decline; on the other, you have an iconic 20-year-old Downtown Chico mural. Regardless of the option you choose to support—whether economy or art—it’s undeniable that both are valuable. Will and I spoke at length on numerous occasions regarding the mural and what could be done to preserve it but, other than merely repainting it elsewhere; there was no way to keep the original. He offered to support whatever decision I made on how best to preserve it and, having an entrance gate six feet to the left of the mural; I decided to reach out to Old Chico Iron. I met with Grant and Tim at their welding shop off of Meyers Street September 13th and pitched the idea for an Abbey Road-inspired gate. Grant’s eyes lit up immediately. They called their metal painter, Ryan Davidson, and local metal artist, Rustworthy, over to the table to join the discussion. Within 15 minutes, and a few clarifying questions, they had all that they needed from me. The team began discussing the project amongst themselves, weighing the options for various metals, 20

Built from hot and cold rolled steel, the 750-pound Abbey Road gate is stunning, and the team at Old Chico Iron managed to beautifully maintain the integrity and artistic flair of Gregg Payne’s original mural. Perhaps most impressive, not a single drop of paint was used to provide color for the gate. The blue denim suit worn by George Harrison was achieved by torching the metal to just over 700 degrees. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr’s outfit colors were created by rusting each—exposing one to acid and the other to a caustic base. Finally, John Lennon’s white suit was realized by applying a grained bright finish to the cold rolled steel. The skin tone of each Beatle was individually bead blasted into the metal. Built to withstand whatever Mother Nature has to throw at it, the gate stands as a heartfelt tribute to a work of art that holds a place in many a Chicoan’s hearts. As the mural’s original artist put it, “Great creative solution […] 20 years was a good run for the mural, but this preserves the spirit and should last longer.”

The Abbey Road gate isn’t Old Chico Iron’s first work of preservation for Chico; they helped to restore the El Rey Theatre earlier this year and, since then, preserving Chico’s icons has become a bit of an obsession for them. The gate is the first of 12 different art pieces they are currently planning for our city, each commemorating a part of their hometown that has a special place in their hearts. Though they do run a successful business, philanthropy and giving are the core values that drive every member of the Old Chico Iron team. They’re currently in talks with the Museum of Northern California Art (MONCA) on another local project and are looking forward to the opportunity to help the soon-to-open Chico Children’s Museum with whatever they may need. Passion projects, like the revitalizing of Caper Acres, are often discussed within the group, and the enthusiasm expressed is reason enough to jump onboard. It’s clear that while funding is always an important factor in business, the heart is what matters here. During the next few months, Grant and Tim will launch the next exciting phase of their business, a retail supply store in the building adjacent to their metal shop. The company will provide homeowners, contractors, and DIYers a location to buy the most commonly purchased steel at a fraction of the price found at big box stores. More importantly, shoppers will be supporting a local business and purchasing from a source that not only sells the product but uses it on a daily basis and can provide education to back it up. Alongside the new retail outlet, 21

When Kelsey graduated high school in 2005, she was ready for a change. She left the small community behind and moved to Seattle, Washington, hoping to be inspired and discover herself. She began working for Gene Juarez Salons, eventually taking over as salon manager for a 90-person salon in Downtown Seattle. She remained there for four years, learning to not only manage the day-to-day operations of the salon, but the myriad of personalities as well. Kelsey’s father was diagnosed with cancer in 2011. Wanting to care for him, she left her life in Seattle and moved back to Northern California. The next few years were difficult, and his passing made it more so. The experience left her lost and unsure of her own purpose. She began searching for new direction, eventually landing on a Craigslist’s job post by North Valley Eye Care. She applied for the job, had one interview, and was hired as their new receptionist. Over the four years that followed, Kelsey moved up the ranks at North Valley Eye Care, assisting in their marketing efforts, taking over as front desk supervisor, and eventually earning the position of practice manager—an assignment which utilizes many of skills she honed while working at the salon in Seattle. In addition to making excellent patient care her number one priority, Kelsey manages staff scheduling, is the first point of contact for IT issues, handles the doctors’ personal schedules, and acts as the go-between for administration, staff, and doctors. As a people-pleaser, Kelsey couldn’t be happier to have found a perfectly-crafted opportunity that gave her the direction she needed when she needed it most. She’s excited about her career and to be a part of something that is constantly growing to better serve the community. From talking with the doctors and the rest of the staff, they’re just as excited to have her, and we can certainly understand why. Post Office Santas Not all heroes wear capes. In this case, those at the Chico Post Office don their postal blues, delivering holiday cards and gifts for little ones, by way of Santa Claus, of course.

presents come from the Post Office staff, pulling together to continue this tradition of spreading good cheer to those who need it most.

For many years, bright-eyed, hopeful children wrote letters to St. Nicholas, begging to be put on the nice list. Cheerful requests for toys, books, gadgets, or any other must-have item, written by kids from all neighborhoods in Chico, are colorfully penned in hopes of being delivered under their tree.

Gifts like a fiddle, dolls, basketballs, karaoke machines, and bicycles have been delivered to unsuspecting kiddos. Presents are gifted Christmas Eve, and the Post Office doesn’t take any credit.

With the high number of written requests, Santa has been receiving some assistance from a little postal carrier elf, Jamie Truby. The U.S. Postal Service in Chico has held the tradition of replying to ‘Dear Santa’ letters and giving the gift of hope to children in the area. Though this has been going on for years, Jamie took over the duties in 2009. Jamie takes the time to read through the hundreds of letters to Santa, and, based on the neighborhood and after consulting with the carriers, she selects a few lucky children who will have their wishes met. A present off a child’s list to Santa is purchased, wrapped, and delivered just in time for Christmas. Every child who writes into Santa Claus will receive a letter from the jolly man himself with some candy or trinkets. Funds and donations for the select 24

What warms Jamie’s heart the most, is the response from the grateful children. An outpouring of 'thank you' cards and letters are sent out thanking Santa and Santa’s local little helpers.

From reading the letters, to shopping for the gifts and carefully wrapping them, Jamie’s work each holiday season is cut out for her; but for the mail carrier, this is what the holiday season is all about. “Christmas is a hard time for everyone,” Jamie said. “This is just the good part of Christmas for everybody. It gives us something to be proud of, and we know we are making a difference for the kids in Chico.”

What Goes Up, Must Come Down? Sir Isaac Newton’s third law of motion states that what goes up must come down. Despite this being a law of physics, many investors honestly believe that gravity somehow applies to the stock market. When the market is doing well, we often hear this joint statement from investors and the media alike, “The market can’t keep going up. It has to go down.” If the market were an apple falling from a tree, that statement would be correct. However, the market does not drop due to a gravitational force. The U.S. stock market has a $25 trillion-dollar value as of writing. There are millions of investors, mutual funds, hedge funds, etc. making buy or sell decisions daily. It’s a crowded marketplace. Historically, the overall stock market direction has followed our economy. Within the last five years, we have seen exceptional economic growth, and the market has developed. In the past, stock prices have

been knocked down by a rise in oil prices, a fast increase in interest rates, high unemployment, or other variables. Bull and bear markets are a regular occurrence and are healthy for any marketplace.

TIGER When 76-year-old Paula Pimentel-McCoskey found herself transferred to the Twin Oaks Rehabilitation Center, her spirits couldn’t have been any lower. Fresh out of a procedure to stop the spread of a squamous cell cancer that led to the removal of her left eye and a bone in her face, the ever-positive Paula found herself losing grip on her charming and sunny outlook on life. Luckily, the Twin Oaks staff was up for the challenge of helping her get it back. “I’d never been a quitter, but I’d also never had anything so drastic happen,” Paula said. “But everyone there, from the janitors to the cooks, they watched over me, they loved me, and they all pulled me up.” During her three-month stay, Paula underwent physical, occupational, and speech therapy at the center to help her regain some necessary motor skills, like chewing, and to increase her confidence and independence. She looks back fondly on her experiences with these therapists and aides, saying they all worked

It was perhaps the overall sense of care and friendship amongst the staff and other residents that made the most significant impact on Paula, however. After losing her hearing and part of her foot to a previous bout with cancer years back, she had yearned for a social outlet that Twin Oaks helped her find again. “I had really missed being out with people, and Twin Oaks helped bring a community back to me,” she said. “So now I feel I have friends again.” Back at home now and living with the assistance of her husband, housekeeper, and service dog, Paula keeps busy with two of her biggest passions: cooking and crafts. She designs and creates her beautifully-detailed eyepatches (fit to each season, of course), and hopes to soon volunteer leading craft workshops for the residents at Twin Oaks. Paula knows she is still fighting an uphill battle and remains under tight monitoring from her doctors to ensure her cancer doesn’t spread. As for now, however, she is full of life and a never-quit attitude that she credits Twin Oaks for helping her home. “I still see a lot of things ahead,” she said. “But I have a whole different attitude now.”

Even when everything goes according to plan, the holiday season can be stressful. During this time, we tend to stray from our usual sleep and work rhythms with travel negotiations, parties, counters filled with treats, kids on vacation, and visitors. What can we do to make it through the holiday season and be ready to embark on 2018 feeling our best? We have five strategies to help you stay on track. 1. Be a sleep warrior. Americans are chronically underslept. Lack of sleep is connected to increased hunger, higher blood sugars, poor concentration, more illness, and impaired problem-solving. This rest will help you make the best choices for your health and will protect against illness and fatigue. Goal: Get at least seven hours of sleep a night. You deserve it. 2. Keep active. Holidays can put our exercise plans to the test, but we have some workaround ideas for you. Invite friends and family to join you for an after-meal stroll instead of plopping on the couch. Walking after a meal lowers post-meal blood sugars and increases energy by activating muscles. Just 10 minutes of walking after meals can make a big difference. Other ideas include playing catch or frisbee, putting on some music and dancing, organizing a game of football, or signing up for a local holiday walking event. Goal: Work toward 30 minutes of activity each day. 3. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget the fiber. With all the snacks and tempting foods, whole 36

healthy foods may take a backseat. Enjoy the abundance of seasonal vegetables, fruits, nuts, and grains that are fiber-rich and decrease inflammation. Examples include yams, squash, mandarin oranges, almonds, pistachios, quinoa, kale, brown rice, oatmeal, salads, and broth-based soups. Goal: Strive to eat at least 25 grams of fiber each day 4. Drink plenty of H2O. Water is the perfect way to stay hydrated, replenished, and it keeps your appetite in check. Add a splash of flavor with a jigger of fruit juice or fresh cucumbers, lime slices, or a sprig of rosemary. Sparkling waters come in a vast variety of flavors, many are calorie free and contain no artificial sweeteners. Goal: Keep hydrated by enjoying plenty of water. 5. Holidays and sugar go hand-inhand. If possible, try and eat less than six teaspoons of added sugar each day. Excess sugar intake can cause inflammation and buildup of fat in the liver. When looking at labels, it is helpful to know one teaspoon equals four grams of sugar. Goal: Limit sugar to six teaspoons each day.

Bringing It Back Home “It’s a funny story,” Terry Strasser said as he began to share how he and his wife, Kitt Strasser, came to purchase Tomfoolery. Kitt and Terry are the proud new business owners of the beloved Downtown Chico store, but their journey in obtaining the keys to the castle has serendipitous sensibility. A few months ago, the two felt it was time for a change of scenery. Chico native, Kitt, along with her longtime love, Terry, recently sold their Ventura home and moved to Chico in hopes of finding the change they desired. Prior to moving to California, the two spent 18 years in Seattle where they raised their children. Though they called Seattle home for so long, returning to Chico seemed like the best decision for them. Upon purchasing their new home, the couple received the previous homeowner’s mail, and in the spirit of being a good neighbor, contacted the owner to return her belongings. A fellow neighbor said the sellers owned Tomfoolery, located downtown, and Terry would find them there. After discovering Susan was selling her business that had been around since 1983, Kitt’s face lit up— the possibility of owning and operating her favorite Chico store would be a dream come true. Not only did the two buy Susan’s home, Kitt and Terry also decided to buy her business. Terry jokingly asked if Susan’s dog was part of the storefront purchase, but the pup was off the table. 42

Tomfoolery has been Downtown Chico’s cornerstone for unusually fine gifts and gags since 2003. Kitt and Terry took possession of the store October 1st and have been slowly making improvements and adding their imprint to the store. Customers will notice subtle upgrades to the interior and exterior of Tomfoolery, and of course, the same excellent customer service. Since Terry and Kitt share the sentiment of not fixing what isn’t broken, they will continue the Tomfoolery legacy of providing their customers with “a blend of elegance and whimsy.” Same great brands like Hobo, Briggs, and Riley and Osgoode Marley can still be found at Tomfoolery, but the Strassers will be adding more handmade, artisan pieces, as well as one-of-a-kind vintage finds.

Tomfoolery has always been the one-stop shop where one can discover luxurious travel bags and a rubber chicken, just for laughs. It’s a business where people leave with a smile. Kitt and Terry expressed their gratitude for the big move and purchase. They are both thankful for the strong sense of community, friendly storefront neighbors, and Kitt and Terry hope to add to the camaraderie. THE CLIENT It’s easy to get inspired by so many home improvement blogs, television shows, and glossy publications (wink, wink). Taking on such laborious renovations, by yourself, are a massive undertaking. The DIY culture is one Rick Smith and his fiancée, Charlee Stilwell, are well acquainted with. The two moved into their 1956-style Chico home seven years ago. Though they fell in love with their retro house, Charlee and Rick considered their purchase to be a fixerupper. Slowly, the couple began to remodel, room-by-room, updating and customizing their dream home. The two DIYers didn’t shy away from floorto-ceiling home upgrades and tackled the 44

THE CALL task with a lot of sweat and patience. Rick started with a backroom, moving onto a bathroom and then the living room floor; remodeling the kitchen was next on their home improvement checklist. Their 1950s home also came with a retro green sink, ceramic tile, and stained oak cabinets—all dreary and outdated. Rick and Charlee envisioned something modern, fresh, and bright. Rick, who works at PBM Supply, a manufacturer of farm equipment, started the project in April and worked many tiresome hours to complete the kitchen renovations. With work, life, and an active little girl, the family had their work cut out for them.

Rick and Charlee paid a visit to the New Again Kitchen Remodeling showroom in Chico. Joe Sweeney is a Chicoan through and through. Born at Enloe Hospital, to Brian and Karen Sweeney, he had the value of trust and community instilled in him from a young age. His parents, supportive of everything he put his mind to, were the first to encourage him in everything he wanted to do while growing up. Youth sports never skipped a season, and they drove him to and from games, and never missed a minute of the experience. Joe attended Chico High School where he met and started dating his future wife, Britney. He played baseball for CHS and set his sights on making it to the next level; no one tried to talk him out of it. He excelled at a number of subjects but enjoyed math and business, 50

which came as no surprise as his father was a financial advisor himself. When graduation arrived, he decided to complete two years at Butte College while playing baseball before transferring to Azusa Pacific to complete his finance degree. Through college he honed his business skills through small side ventures and investing in the markets. He graduated in 2008, married Britney in 2009, and by 2010 the two were ready to move back to Chico in order to be closer to family. Joe began working at Asset Management Group full time alongside his father, Brian, and business partner Reneé Michel. Eventually, the three formed their own team to better serve their clientele.

His team works with people of all professions, but intentionally doesn’t have minimums because they want to be able to help anyone at any stage. As long as someone has an interest in financial planning for themselves or their family, it doesn't matter if they're starting with $10,000 or $10 million. Looking at the growth of their business over the past five years, Joe feels an incredible amount of gratitude for what he has become a part of. He never knows who his next client will be, but feels humbled and is provided with a new sense of responsibility every time someone trusts him with their private life and investments. He counts himself as lucky to work in an office full of some of his favorite people in the world. CHICO CUSTOM CABINETRY:

Cliffside Custom Originally, from Colusa, Lynn Bottini worked for the telephone company for 22 years before deciding to retire. She looked north to Chico and, as an avid golfer, found the location to be ideal. She moved to Chico, and within one month met Dean Prince, a fellow golf enthusiast who had sold his insurance business and retired two months prior. Each was playing a round at Bidwell Park Golf Course with a friend and just happened to get paired together by chance. They hit it off, exchanged numbers, and have been together since that fateful day. A few years into their whirlwind romance, the two were contacted by a friend who was painting a home in Paradise. The view was incredible, and he knew the house would be for sale within a few short months. Lynn and Dean drove up the hill to check it out, and with no shortage of vision, Lynn decided to purchase the property. To call the home a fixer-upper would be to forego any respect for the amount of work needed to achieve what they have, but once you see the view, you understand precisely why they invested so much into their home. They tore the home down to its studs and began remodeling it from top to bottom, rebuilding it using an entirely new floor plan that required an incredible amount of plumbing and electrical work. The design, wholly dictated by the canyon views, brought the home into an open floor plan with windows providing panoramic views of the canyon. When it came time to develop the kitchen, they searched through countless contractors, but eventually found their way to Chico Custom Cabinetry. We met up with Lynn and Dean at their cliffside home to hear about their experience.

UL: What was the original kitchen like when you moved in? DP: Nothing like it is now. It was right next to the entryway, and a couple of bedrooms were where the kitchen is now—the ceilings were so low; you had to see it to believe it. Everything was old and dated. We had to tear down all of the interior walls and move all of the plumbing to make the new kitchen possible. UL: How did you find Chico Custom Cabinetry and what was it like working with them? LB: We searched through a lot of different companies and contractors before stumbling across Chico Custom Cabinetry. They invited us to stop by so we visited them and just fell in love with John. He was so sincere, thoughtful, and friendly; you could tell that he had my best interest at heart. We told him the house was in the canyon and wanted to respect its location and keep it looking a bit “mountainy” without turning it super rustic. He understood exactly what we were looking for and made the experience so easy. UL: What made this project custom? LB: We had already designed the perfect kitchen during the remodeling process, so custom was the way we needed to go. We wanted an open concept kitchen with limited but functional cabinetry, a bar peninsula, no upper cabinets, and zero clutter. As with everything else, the canyon views dictated the design of the kitchen, and it was important that the sink is right under the windows that overlooked the canyon.

UL: Do you have any advice for other homeowners looking to remodel? LB: Don’t rush in, take your time, and shop around. Pre-plan and find people you are truly comfortable with. We did a lot of research and planning, and in the end, it all turned out great! UL: Would you refer Chico Custom Cabinetry to friends and family? LB: Absolutely. We fell in love with everyone at Chico Custom Cabinetry. They were super easy to work with, and it’s clear he’s in the business to take care of you. DP: He gets his reward for the pleasure he brings his clients. He took extreme pride in his work, and I was impressed with his nocharge fixes just to make sure it was exactly what we wanted. Lynn finding them was a fluke and a godsend for this job.

UL: What was unique about the cabinets you created? LB: John took the time to make sure the cabinetry was to our liking. He recommended a knotty alder and stained a couple of boards to give us an idea of the final product. We fell in love with the espresso finish as it complemented the mountain style we requested. We told him how we wanted our layout to look and he made it happen, along with some functional space savers like the lazy susan in the corner. DP: As someone who has spent a fair share of time remodeling, I was impressed by John’s attention to detail. The pull-out drawers in the cabinets all used heavy slides with beefy hardware. No corners were cut. He even suggested adding some trim features to dress things up a bit. UL: The kitchen looks incredible! How long did it take to put everything together? LB: John was right on time for everything. He quoted a date within six weeks of starting the project, and he had it done right on time, which was even more impressive considering everything was made from scratch in their shop. He’s come up and tweaked some things—free of charge—to make sure they were perfect, and they’ve been supportive of the remodel all the way through. DP: Chico Custom Cabinetry also built the cabinetry in our bathroom—a 9-foot-long vanity and a 10-foot-tall linen closet. They both look great and were finished right on time. We couldn’t be happier.

theme of your tablescape. This piece will also anchor the vignette, making it more impactful to the eye. If your table setting theme is more traditional, adding a red runner makes for the perfect pop of color. If your style this year is more neutral, you could opt for a natural burlap or linen runner. The length of your runner just needs to be long enough to build your display. However, if you are using the end seats of the table, leave about 16 inches of space for each place setting. When you host the holidays in your own home, you want to make sure your tabletops are easily accessible and functional for entertaining. By using a tray, or another various base, your display can be easily moved if necessary. To get an even more impactful look, get creative with a base that utilizes the entire length of the table, such as an old shutter, dough bowl, or breadboard.

DECOR ACCENTS Bright white candles are a timeless tablescape decor that will contrast beautifully against pine garland to give that crisp, clean winter feeling. Line the candles in an alternating pattern with room for the garland in between each candle. Traditional pine garlands bring the outdoors in and makes for an easy, yet eye-catching component to any holiday tablescape. You can layer a basic pine garland with magnolia strands and other seasonal, leafy greens like eucalyptus or boxwood. Weave the garland in between the candles and other decor items. For an additional element and point-of-interest, pop in berry picks, seasonal floral stems of poinsettias, or metallic spray-painted branches.

Repurposed table legs Spray paint (two colors) E600 adhesive glue Masking tape Slice of wood (any shape) Small Christmas tree and ornaments

DIRECTIONS: Sand table legs to desired smoothness, then coat them with spray paint. Leave until dry, then flip the legs over and spray the reverse side. Once dry, take each leg and glue it to the slice of wood. (Note: This may take up to 24 hours to completely adhere). When the legs are dry and firmly attached, flip the table upside down with the wood slice touching the ground. Place a strip of masking tape on each of the legs, about 5 inches from the bottom. Spray the area below the tape with a different colored spray paint for a decorative touch. After the paint has dried, it is now time to remove the tape, add your embellished Christmas tree, and enjoy the holiday season! Now that it’s officially the holiday season, it’s the ideal time to start pulling out your boxes of festive decor. For me, what marks the holiday season is getting a gigantic Christmas tree for my living room and decorating it with colorful lights and shiny ornaments. For this month’s DIY project, we visited The Rustic Nest in Downtown Chico and found three repurposed table legs we thought would be perfect to use to create a stand for a small Christmas tree. No matter where you live, this is the perfect project to integrate a little Christmas spirit.

INGREDIENTS: • (1) ½ gallon Shubert’s peppermint ice cream (don’t worry, you will have some left to snack on while the pie freezes!) • 1 pre-made Oreo Cookie Pie Crust or make your own following our crust recipe! • 1 jar of Shubert’s chocolate sauce • 1 Shubert’s candy cane, crushed

OREO PIE CRUST: • 18 Oreos (about half of one package) • 3 tablespoons melted butter

DIRECTIONS FOR CRUST: In a food processor, crush Oreos. You can also place Oreos in a large Ziploc bag and crush with a rolling pin. When done, pour into mixing bowl with melted butter. Mix until well combined. Spray a 9-inch pie pan with nonstick spray. Evenly press crumb mixture into pie pan. Place in fridge until ready to fill with ice cream.

DIRECTIONS ICE CREAM PIE: In a large bowl, stir peppermint ice cream until softened. Be careful not to over stir ice cream; it will melt. Spoon ice cream into crust spreading evenly. Freeze for 3 to 4 hours. Pie should be solid.

TO GARNISH: Place a couple spoons of Shubert’s chocolate sauce in a microwave-safe bowl and slightly warm (approx. 30 seconds to 1 minute). Pour warm (not hot) chocolate sauce into a onegallon Ziploc bag, snip a tiny hole in one corner so a small amount comes out, decorate your pie with desired pattern. Sprinkle with crushed candy canes.

TO SERVE: Place pie on counter at room temperature for 5 to 7 minutes, cut into 8 to 10 individual slices. You may wish to place some extra chocolate sauce on each serving plate for an extra decorative touch.

Crushed Peppermint Ice Cream Pie

Baklava INGREDIENTS:

• 1 package Phyllo Dough • 4 cups chopped walnuts or pecans • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 ½ stick butter, melted • 2 cups honey • ½ cup water • ½ cup sugar • 3 teaspoons vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS: Remove Phyllo Dough package from freezer and place in the fridge for 24 hours to thaw. Remove from fridge 1 hour before using. When working with the Phyllo Dough, only remove the sheets you need. Keep the other sheets covered in plastic wrap, followed by a damp cloth. Toss the chopped walnuts and cinnamon together. Set aside. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Thoroughly butter a rectangular baking pan. Make sure the sheets of Phyllo will fit the pan.

Butter the top sheet of Phyllo with melted butter, then grab it, along with the unbuttered sheet below it. Set the two sheets in the pan, buttered sheet face down. Press lightly into the pan. Repeat this twice more, so that you have six sheets of Phyllo in the pan, three of the sheets buttered. Sprinkle chopped walnuts to make a single layer. Butter two sheets of Phyllo and place them on top of the walnuts. Add more walnuts, then two more buttered Phyllo sheets. Repeat this a couple more times, or until you're out of walnuts. Top with 4 more buttered Phyllo sheets, ending with a buttered top. Cut a diagonal diamond pattern in the baklava. Bake for 45 minutes, or until the baklava is golden brown. While the baklava is baking, combine 1 stick of the butter, honey, water, sugar, and vanilla in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. When you remove the baklava from the oven, drizzle half the saucepan evenly all over the top. Allow it to sit and absorb for a minute, then drizzle on a little more until you think it's thoroughly moistened. Allow the baklava to cool, uncovered, for several hours.

INGREDIENT OF THE MONTH:

ORANGES As a kid growing up in Iowa, fresh oranges were a rare and special winter treat. On Christmas morning, my sister and I eagerly unpacked our stockings, knowing they would be filled with exotic nuts, fancy chocolate bars, shiny coins, and a big, juicy navel orange nestled deep in the stocking toe. Today, we are lucky to have access to citrus fruits grown locally, picked perfectly ripe, and brought directly to the Chico Certified Farmers Market every week, all winter long, by the farmers who produce them. Did you know those sweet navel oranges are more nutritious per serving than asparagus or red grapes? Oranges contain more than 170 phytonutrients in addition to vitamin C and, because whole oranges have almost three grams of fiber, they do not cause a spike in your blood sugar. Blood oranges are even more nutritious! They get their red color from plant pigments called anthocyanins. The Moro variety has the highest level of this beneficial antioxidant. Add some to your freshsqueezed juice! Mandarin oranges are a category of citrus that includes satsumas, tangerines, and clementines. All have loose peels that zip off easily. Some are seedless, and all contain the cancer preventatives lycopene and beta-carotene. All citrus fruits are sweetest, and most nutrient-dense, when picked fully ripe. Commercial growers pick green, semi-ripe fruit, then use ethylene gas to change the green skins to orange. This process allows for more extended storage and transport, but the fruit never develops full nutritional value and flavor, because citrus does not ripen after picking. Avoid these “de-greened” fruits by buying directly from your farmer!

Sohnrey of Sunshine At the end of a long gravel driveway, some distance from Highway 99, is the Sohnrey Family Farms' gift shop. Upcycled Designs Kenneth McCall’s first introduction to his craft came from necessity rather than desire. As a hard worker, and in-need of employment, Kenneth replied to an ad seeking a sander and wood finisher. Having no prior experience, his boss took a chance on him, and woodwork became Kenneth’s new calling. His initial introduction to the malleable medium sparked a lasting impression. Kenneth began exploring the world of wood as he learned more on the job, restoring and refinishing antique furniture. After working at the local woodshop for more than a year, he started to take home discarded pieces from work projects, motivated to transform the scraps into bohemian-style earrings. Now, 17 years later, the Chico artist is well known for his work, and his creations can be found under the name, Eco Wood Crafts. From intricately carved earrings to designer, handcrafted tables, Kenneth makes good use of his scrapped eco-friendly finds. His excitement is infectious. The way Kenneth talks about wood, one would think he was expressing his passion for ingredients in rare and exotic food. After every fine cut, he would bring the wood to his nose and pinpoint distinct properties; the aroma was intoxicating. The love for his chosen medium reflects how he uses the material in his earrings designs. The few embellishments added to specific 76

pieces accentuate the organic material. For the majority of his artwork, Kenneth lets the wood speak for itself, and the details are stunning. “It’s like a geode,” Kenneth said. “You never know what you’re going to get when you cut it open. It looks like a tree from the outside but, on the inside, it’s a whole other world.” Kenneth’s time spent working with wood has invited endless possibilities. Sawdust blanketed the floor of his Chico workshop and piles of unusual and untouched wood could be found crammed in every nook of his shop, just awaiting Kenneth’s genius to transform each scrap. Additional materials for his artwork have come in the form of a fallen tree limb or items rummaged from other local

wood shops’ recycling bins. Working this way limits his material, but it does not define his inspirations. When it comes to creating his earrings, Kenneth can craft multiple designs from one scrap of wood because the earrings require smaller surfaces. It's a different story for his furniture. With the larger pieces, he works with what he has, and that is when his creative juices flow. Between in-lay elements and one-of-a-kind table legs, it’s a wonder how he creates what he does without a table saw. Not having this tool to cleanly chopdown larger oddments, Kenneth sets projects aside and patiently waits until he finds scraps that are the perfect size to complete his artwork. I am thankful that I get to spend my days surrounded by the beauty of this region in which we live. I am grateful to live in a community with so many who work so hard to make it a good place to be from. I am grateful for friends, whose broad shoulders and welcoming arms uplift and surround me during difficult times, and whose laughter joins with mine to provide joyful noise across the Earth during happy times.
