FROM THE EDITOR Oh, hello 2018, you arrived swiftly and just in time. We hope everyone had a lovely holiday and rang in the new year on a high note. I was ready to kiss last year goodbye.
UPGRADED LIVING STAFF
As for me, it was my year of growth. Not too long ago, I found my 2017 resolutions list, and I was pleasantly surprised how much I accomplished off that little list I had forgotten about. Those who know me well were shocked to learn I spent more time outside— camping, hiking, and exploring the beauty this town offers—and I got a tan. I took a wild adventure overseas to Spain with my parents, where I learned more (and felt at home) with our culture, and for the first time saw my parents as real people who were also 29 once, trying to navigate life. I fell deeper in love with my guy who never ceases to amaze me, but more importantly, I kicked a nasty habit that will add years to my life.
AVEED KHAKI Publisher/Owner
Landing this incredible job was also a 2017 highlight. What you’re holding is the much anticipated New Year, New You issue. My lovely employee prepared me for the long nights ahead that graciously accompanied the work that went into this magazine. We definitely were burning that midnight oil, but it was worth it. Seeing these folks transform right before our eyes was an incredible honor. We witnessed their self-esteem soar, and their outward grace began to match their inward beauty. I want to thank our retailers and amazing stylists who took the time out of their hectic schedules to help make our candidates feel loved and look absolutely marvelous. It was a pleasure getting to know everyone and realizing these folks are people just struggling to feel OK, daily. Those who nominated our makeover candidates recognized their ambition to better their lifestyle and well-being, and we were happy to be a piece of that happiness. Here’s to a fantastic new year! Cheers!

COOL KID: LITERARY CHAMPS Today's perception of the modern teenager doesn’t include them hanging out at a library, let alone volunteering there on weekends. However, local teens are doing just that at the Chico branch of Butte County Library.
650 RIO LINDO AVE. #4, CHICO 343-3137
One volunteer, Iris Kern, has been volunteering for a year. She was convinced to follow in the footsteps of her friend, Aliza Jolliff, who has been devoting her time at the library for four years. One of the newest recruits, Rose Johnson, has been there four weeks. All three work in the children’s section, helping to get crafts ready for kids’ programs, reshelving stacks of books, and giving reading suggestions to kids and their parents. Their favorite part of the job is—unanimously—being around their old favorite books and being the first to check out new releases. Sheryl Hubbard, Children’s Services and Teen Volunteer Coordinator, said that one of the simplest library operations to learn when starting out, much like learning to read as a child, is organizing picture books. Reshelving the picture books gets the students familiar with the system, and these teens are already well versed in the ins-and-outs of the library catalog. Sheryl said any given one of them is engaged and intelligent enough to run the library on their own. While improving college applications, volunteering also gives the teens essential job experience, as well as library-specific skills and offers an opportunity to engage with the community and people from different walks of life.
10

In addition to being a hub for books and resources, there are also plenty of weird occurrences that happen at the library. Aliza witnessed one such experience her first summer volunteering when a cat was left in the library’s book drop box. Luckily, according to Sheryl, library people tend to also be cat people, so the cat was well taken care of, and by the end of the day, the little feline was adopted by a library patron. Aliza is also the proud owner of three rescue cats. Kimberlee Wheeler, the library’s children’s librarian, said the main issue they have faced isn’t with all the changes in technology, but with the way the teens are perceived. “There’s a perception problem, and teens tend to be the most underserved demographic in libraries,” she said. “We feel like it’s our responsibility to change that, not only through volunteerism but also through the services we can offer and the relationships we can build.” People volunteer for all sorts of reasons, but these teens dedicate their time to help out their local library. Students like these prove it’s time for people to break negative stigmas they have about the younger generation as there are so many of them doing great work.

New Year's Resolutions My New Year’s resolution for 2018 is to spend more time outdoors. I would like to spend more time doing the things I love to do like fly fishing, hiking, and photography. I think embracing nature this next year will be the best thing I can do for myself and that starts with really creating a balanced lifestyle. I would like to prepare myself physically and mentally to start backpacking trips and just absorbing all the recreational opportunities that Northern California offers. I think this new year is going to be a great year and I am ready to embrace everything that brings. –Michael Mejia

House Of
HOPE
Founders Laurie Maloney, Peggy Mead, Shelly Watson, and Nancy Wolfe opened the first House of Hope back in 2013. Since then, the house has accommodated more than 43 women and children, 88 percent of whom have achieved their goal of living independently. Nicely decorated and with all the provisions of home, the house provides shelter to guests for up to two years. Director of Services Shelly Watson shared, “During this time, I try to teach the women the important life skills of how to maintain a home, pay their fees on time, get along with each other and their neighbors. My goal is for each woman to be able to move into permanent housing 12
U P G R A D E D L I V I N G M AG A Z I N E JA N UA RY 2 0 1 8
and have the knowledge and skills to keep their home. I feel the HOH makes a difference in our community by cutting down the recidivism of homelessness.” The program has already proven its effectiveness in stopping the cycle of homelessness. For example, Watson shared the story of two sisters who attended college while living in the house, participated in the center’s vocational program, found employment, and ultimately signed a lease on their first home. Given the experience of homelessness in the past—two generations of their families—the sisters have demonstrated that with personal determination and the community’s support, the generational cycle can be broken. Since 2013, the project has grown to include five additional houses. The newest, Holly House, opened its doors to guests in August of 2017. “House of Hope takes compassion, determination, sharing the message of hope, teachable moments to the participants living there, understanding, and patience,” Watson said. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN PROVIDING SUPPORT TO A WOMAN LIVING IN THE HOME, VISIT JESUSCENTER.ORG TO MAKE A DONATION OR BECOME A MENTOR.

As the number of people living on the streets of Butte County continues to increase, organizations like the Jesus Center have taken the initiative to address the complex problem of homelessness in Chico. A faith-based nonprofit, the Jesus Center shines a beacon of hope into the lives of those experiencing poverty, hunger, and isolation. While the Jesus Center works with the community to provide assistance and support in a wide variety of ways, one of the organization’s most inspiring projects is House of Hope (HOH), a program that provides transitional housing and shelter to adult women who have fallen on hard times.

Sleepless nights plagued Chico realtor, Rachel Eccles, and for her mother, Andrea Peterson, chronic pain and the constant feeling of toppling over were discomforting, yet regular, daily sensations. The cure? Regular visits to Dr. Dina Rabo Health and Wellness Chiropractic office in Chico. Rachel and Dr. Rabo have been friends since high school, and every time the two bumped into each other, it reminded Rachel to set up an appointment, but as it goes, life happens and schedules fill. When Rachel finally went into the office for a consultation, she was floored by their discovery. Rachel, a former gymnast, suffering from two bulging discs, was familiar with the wonders of chiropractic care, but it wasn’t until she began seeing Dr. Rabo that she started to feel monumental changes. Before adjusting her patients, Dr. Rabo takes a thermograph scan that uncovers areas of inflammation along the spine. Rachel was confident her scan would show her source of lower back pain, but her most severe problem area came from her neck, which explained the cause of Rachel’s gnarly headaches. Andrea’s scan revealed areas of multiple whiplashes from her days of water skiing. The two were surprised, yet relieved, and Rachel thought chiropractic care would help her daughter, Aubrey Eccles’, perpetual digestive issues.
When it came to spunky 5-year-old Aubrey laying down on Dina’s table, the two first built a trusting relationship, and Dr. Rabo demonstrated on a baby doll Aubrey still lovingly holds when she visits. The visual prepared Aubrey for what Dr. Rabo was going to do, and now little Aubrey looks forward to seeing Dr. Rabo to get “snapped.” The benefits of chiropractic care for children surprised Rachel the most. After Aubrey’s first visit, the little kiddo had to make a swift visit to the bathroom and, since then, Rachel has noticed a change in her child’s demeanor as well as a boosted immune system. Within weeks of visiting Dr. Rabo, and taking in her advice of drinking more water and sitting up straight, the generations of strong women (little Aubrey included) have noticed their body operating better and painlessly—it was like flipping a switch. “As an adjustment, a lot of people think we’re just popping or cracking bones,” Dr. Rabo explained, “but what you’re doing is creating neurological changes by pressure releases in the spine. It’s almost like relieving certain strains by allowing a joint to move and it alters you chemically and neurologically.”
START THE NEW YEAR OFF RIGHT AND SCHEDULE A VISIT WITH DR. DINA RABO BY CALLING, 530.846.6262 OR VISIT HER CHICO OFFICE LOCATED AT 670 RIO LINDO AVE. SUITE 600. CONSULTATIONS ARE ALWAYS FREE.

Care EXC EL L ENC E I N
Tina Colbert never tires of watching residents leave Twin Oaks Post Acute Rehab Center after a successful rehabilitation. “Being able to see them make progress and be excited about that is a huge reason I love doing this work,” she said. Tina works as a speech language pathologist with a long and diverse résumé working with everyone from children to geriatric patients all over Northern California. She recently began working at Twin Oaks as the facility’s Rehab Manager, a role she held in the early2000s as well. Colbert said the transition back to Twin Oaks has been a smooth one, as some therapists, nurses, and administrators have remained on staff since her previous stint. It’s unsurprising to see such a large part of the staff still around; it speaks to the dynamic of a patient-centered care Twin Oaks exemplifies. In addition to excellent therapy departments helping with speech, occupational, and physical therapies, residents also utilize numerous other features to build up their confidence and independence before being integrated back
into the home and community environments, including simulation rooms replicating every room in a house, complete with appliances. Keeping all of these plates spinning is where Tina comes into play, her expertise ensuring everything is meticulously scheduled and organized behind the scenes. “The biggest challenge is making sure all the resident needs are met, all the staff needs are met, and that all those needs are met simultaneously,” she said. In her spare time, Tina spends time with her 17-year-old son and loves being outdoors (in another life, she thinks she may have been a park ranger). She is a self-described, “yard sale and thrift store picking guru,” and would love to, one day, own an antique shop. For now, however, she is focused on the care and success of her Twin Oaks residents. “There’s a lot of stress in the position,” Tina said. “But when someone gets excited because they walked for the first time, or they finally made some progress and got to go home, it just takes that one smile from a resident to make it all worth it.”

Skin Care
For Him! Most cosmetic procedures are often perceived as services for women, and even stigmatized as 'unmanly.' Many men have experienced the emotional effects of teen skin problems, including lack of self-esteem and social anxiety—all these issues can linger into adulthood. Sensitive skin, adult acne, rosacea, broken capillaries, and wrinkles occur in men as commonly as they do in women. Skin is skin, and issues surface, naturally, regardless of gender. Why not improve our appearance if we can? Men represent about 20 percent of DermBar’s clientele, up from 2 percent since we opened in 2007. Our male clients may seek services because they hold jobs in the public eye, (attorneys, real estate, business owners), they need to de-stress, or they merely want to look their best day-to-day or for a special event. Our male clients utilize many of our services, including Botox, microdermabrasion, and collagen-building laser treatments, which are all increasing in popularity among men, with no stigma attached.
Inefficient sleep has been linked to depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, stroke, and mental distress. Rest is a necessity for health and well-being.
For the outdoor adventurer, sunscreen is always the highest priority. At DermBar, we can match the perfect 30 to 50 SPF sunscreen to your skin type. It’s important to remember a healthy body includes healthy skin and the desire to look and feel our best has less to do with vanity than overall well-being.
How to lay you down to sleep:

Going to bed at a decent hour is a simple way to improve our health. More than onethird of American adults are not getting enough sleep, usually sleeping less than seven hours during a 24-hour period.

“Poor sleep, especially from a disorder such as sleep apnea (which causes disrupted breathing during sleep), has a profound negative impact on your cardiovascular and overall health,” explained Dinesh Verma, MD, medical director of North State Pulmonary/Critical Care Associates.
• Go to sleep and wake up at the same time each night and morning.
If you’re concerned about snoring, gasping, leg cramps, or difficulty breathing during sleep, talk with your healthcare provider. For those with sleep apnea, the AWAKE support group meets every other month at Enloe HomeCare and Hospice. For details, call 530.332.3117. If you need to lose weight, be sure to get enough sleep. Studies suggest a link between sleep duration and weight gain. Too much or too little sleep can affect hormones that control hunger and increase appetite, and it’s hard to find the energy to exercise when you’re tired. How much is enough? The National Institute of Health recommends these daily sleep guidelines: • Newborns: 16–18 hours • Preschool-aged Children: 11–12 hours • School-aged Children: At least 10 hours
• Schedule sleep like other daily activities. • Teens: 9–10 hours • Sleep in a quiet, dark, relaxing room. Keep laptops, checkbooks, work, and gadgets out of the bedroom. • Exercise to help you sleep more soundly.
• Adults (including older adults): 7–8 hours Here’s to wishing you plenty of good sleep this year!
• Avoid sleep stealers like caffeine and alcohol before bedtime. • If you wake up and don’t return to sleep in 15 to 20 minutes, get up and read or listen to relaxing music. Return to bed when you feel sleepy.

New Year's Resolutions
My 2018 New Year’s Resolution is to dive into the books I've paused reading and travel to a variety of new places. Every year I always tell myself I should read more, so, by the end of 2018, I want to set a goal to read at least five books. I would also like to venture to a few new places that I haven’t gone to before whether that be a new city or a different place to explore in the woods. –Nerissa Quinn My New Year's resolution is to be consistent in my actions for building both my business and success within myself. Five months from now, my goal is to look back and see how much value I have added to my life, and how much I have changed. –Frank Rebelo I resolve to spend more quality time with my family, eat better to live longer, and get a hobby for crying out loud. –Jason Corona As we enter 2018, I want to have an excellent New Year’s resolution to start the year off right. One of my biggest shortcomings is my sweet tooth. The sweet tooth is an inherited Camy Family trait, and a strong one. It is not so much a weakness for ordinary candy or adding sweeteners, but it is irresistible for the finer things--dark chocolate, homemade cookies, and pies. So, this year, I resolve to be more aware of my problem and consciously limit my sugar intake. This means trying to keep the extra sugar limited to special occasions and be mindful of the hidden sugars in the foods I regularly eat. –Michelle Camy

Heading into the new year, as a couple, has its advantages. Who better to have beside you as you sweat, cry, and get into shape other than your loved one? Working together is a great way to connect and achieve new goals, together, in becoming the best version of yourself in 2018. Your significant other—or even a friend—could be your best accountability partner for nutrition and fitness. Here are some exercises to try together to achieve that physique of your new year dreams. PARTNER THROW DOWNS With one partner lying down on the ground, the other partner will lift their legs up, to have them thrown down by the standing partner. Using your core to stabilize their legs, to keep them from hitting the ground. ALTERNATING PLANK HIGH-FIVES In a plank position, facing your partner highfive your partner's opposite hand, counting up to as many reps as possible. Keep your core tight in the plank position.
PARTNER RUSSIAN TWISTS Sitting back to back with your partner, pass a weighted ball, or object side to side, working on your obliques. For an added challenge, keep your feet off the ground for the duration of your reps. PASS BACK SIT-UPS In a sit-up position, facing your partner, pass a weighted ball, or other weighted object, back and forth, alternating during your sit-up reps. Bringing the object, overhead, tapping behind you, then forward to your partner. CARDIO Running, jogging, or even walking is always best with a partner. Encourage each other to hold the desired pace without slowing down for the duration of your cardio session.

Can stretch marks be prevented? If so, how?
Stretch marks occur when skin rapidly stretches as a result of sudden growth or weight gain. They are commonly seen in pregnancy and puberty when teenagers go through growth spurts. The stretching causes the middle layer of skin to tear, which then allows the deeper layers to show through, resulting in a stretch mark.
Tips to prevent or minimize stretch marks include maintaining a steady weight, staying well hydrated, having a diet rich in vitamin-C and treating stretch marks when they first appear.
How can I treat them?
Medical-grade vitamin C, in a topical formulation, is especially beneficial due to its antioxidant and collagen building properties. It also brightens the skin and improves the tone, texture, and elasticity. Prescription strength Retin-A is beneficial as well, because of its ability to promote cell turnover, thus producing new unblemished skin
Stretch marks can be treated with lasers or with a procedure called micro-needling. The depth of the scar, and the degree of color change, associated with each stretch mark, will depend on how many treatments and which type of treatment is recommended. Either option typically requires a series of treatments spaced one month apart. The price varies depending on how many treatments and type of treatment prescribed.
What ingredients should I look for when shopping for topical products?
Once removed, can they return? When removed, there is the possibility that stretch marks can return. This depends partly on weight gain, pregnancy, and other lifestyle changes.

When it comes to any health problem affecting the life of a loved one, there’s nothing you wouldn’t do to provide the best care possible. However, for those in a caregiving situation, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and alone. For support, caregivers like Marion Dewar have turned to Passages Caregiver Resource Center (CRC), a program that empowers caregivers to lead healthier, more rewarding lives. At first, when her husband, John, began showing signs of Alzheimer’s in 2010, Marion continued to lead a relatively healthy life. However, in November 2012, the Dewars’ lives were forever changed when John disappeared for four days after getting lost while driving. Though search and rescue were able to recover John safely, the incident resulted in his driver’s license being revoked. “From that moment on,” Marion said, “I had John with me all the time.” Caring for John left little time for Marion to care for herself. She felt isolated, drained, and uncomfortable asking for help; that’s when she found out about the CRC. The CRC provided Marion with assistance— including counseling services, support groups,
and classes—that completely transformed her life as a caregiver. Marion sought personal and legal counseling to help her cope emotionally and arrange John’s affairs. She also attended support group meetings that gave her a sense of community. “The meetings,” she said, “convinced me that I had a place I belonged to and a circle of people I could talk to.” Finally, Marion attended as many of the CRC’s classes, workshops, and retreats as possible. She explained how classes like the Commandments of Caregiving series helped her to cope with her situation and make time for herself, “I learned what to expect of the future, how to cope with the present, [and] how not to feel guilty.” Although John passed away in 2017, Marion still relies on the CRC’s support and wants to make other caregivers aware of this valuable resource. “If people knew just the phone number to get a sense of direction, that would be huge. I’d almost like to see that number posted all over the place.”

TECHNOLOGY FOCUSING ON AN ORGANIZED NEW YEAR
If you listen carefully, when the clock strikes midnight and 2018 arrives, you’ll probably hear the collective sigh as people everywhere remember their new year’s resolutions. Although, another year has come, and we’re still waiting for the widespread availability of flying cars promised to us by The Jetsons, there are incredible advances in technology happening all around us. One common resolution dances with the conventional notion of ‘getting my life organized,’ so shouldn’t we be able to rely on technology to aid in that goal? Instead, with the constantly changing landscape of tech, turning your attention away for a second can feel like a hopeless misstep when you turn back. Between Alexa and Siri, self-driving cars, and the ability to unlock your iPhone with a facial scan, how do we ensure the technology we use to make our lives easier isn’t doing the opposite? As consultants, we know how many products and tools exist that promise a simpler, more organized life. Although being distracted by these claims is easy—in the 32
U P G R A D E D L I V I N G M AG A Z I N E JA N UA RY 2 0 1 8
interest of supporting a 'get organized' resolution in 2018—our best advice is, in a word, focus. Divert your attention to what you consistently rely on in regards to the tools available. Start by considering what software you use daily. For many, it’s those in the Microsoft Suite. After identifying what’s integral, focus on learning how to get the most out of each one. This tactic will aid in organizing your life (and invariably boost your productivity) more than anything else. For example, did you know you can schedule future delivery dates for emails in Outlook? Or that by using conditional formatting in Excel, you can easily spot patterns in spreadsheets? Especially useful when dealing with large databases, or if the real-time information is a necessity. Maybe this isn’t especially exciting advice to take, but we have no doubt it will help you get organized.

LOVE IN BLOOMS The locally owned and operated floral storefront has been creating and delivering gorgeous bouquets since 1937. Sixth generation Chicoan, Krista, has been working in the Chico flower scene since 1995 and purchased the shop in May of 2006, but her initial introduction to floral arrangements stems back even further. Some could argue, the seed was planted before she was born. Krista’s mother was the first president of the Chico Farmers Market back in the ’80s. As a child, she remembers helping her mom at her market stand, binding and selling the flowers her family picked. This weekly chore was a steady source of income for her family, but it also engaged Krista’s deep admiration for all things flora. “It’s super important for me to take care of Chico,” Krista said. “It’s my town.” Nowadays, Krista and her business are plenty busy, piecing together a congratulatory arrangement or selecting the perfect boutonniere for a spring wedding. When it comes to collaborating with brides, Krista’s professionalism and charisma genuinely shine. Throughout the decade, Krista, along with her team of six visionary florists, have 34

managed to stay above the curve and create timeless centerpieces, bouquets, garlands, boutonnieres, and any other floral arrangements loving hearts can dream up. “I already did my wedding; I’m here to do yours,” she explained with a laugh. "I'm here to make brides feel beautiful, and flowers make the whole thing feel complete." Most people planning their wedding have no idea how much flowers cost, so Krista walks her clients through the process with upfront, transparent pricing. She lets her brides make their choice on where they want to spend their money, and the possibilities are endless because everything is completely customizable. Along with providing flowers to every design element in a wedding, Chico Florist also offers full-service rental items like arches adorned with flowers that Krista will deliver, install, and tear down. This worry-free service alleviates some stress, and it’s one less thing to worry about on your big day. “I’ll do my best to make your Pinterest dreams come true,” Krista said.
• Know your colors, style, look, and feel for your wedding. Krista has many pages of flowers available, and knowing beforehand helps her narrow down the selection. • Pictures are always helpful. Whether you have magazines or a collection of pins from Pinterest, Krista and her team of artisans are proficient at blending elements to personalize the perfect floral centerpiece or arrangement. • The most memorable weddings Krista has been a part of included elements of the couples personality and interests, such as incorporating the groomsmen's favorite beer cap to the boutonnieres, veggies, and flowers from the bride and groom's garden or garlic in the flower crown giving homage to bride's hometown of Gilroy.
Before you visit your local florist, consider these things: • It’s easier for Krista to collaborate on design elements if you have your venue booked or in mind. (ex. Churches have pews that could be adorned with garlands.)

Forever THE DIAMOND IS
Between guest lists, dietary restrictions, accommodations, and getting everyone where they need to be at the right time, planning a wedding is no easy feat. The Hotel Diamond, and its premier dining experience, Two Twenty Restaurant, are on a mission to change that. Booking lodging and the rehearsal dinner in the same location is sure to alleviate stress for both the wedded couple as well as their incoming guests. With 43 rooms and suites available, and one of the best locations to host a rehearsal dinner in town located directly below them, enough can’t be said about the convenience found here. The hotel itself has been referred to as the “jewel” of Chico, and has significantly changed the face of Downtown Chico, setting the standard for the finest accommodations in the area. Completely reconstructed from the ground up, the Hotel Diamond offers every contemporary convenience guests would demand. While modern, the hotel still remains true to its historic roots with fine craftsmanship visible throughout the building. Original style crown moldings, rich walnut cabinetry, and artisan furniture custom made to match the hotel combine to create a warm and inviting environment. Best of all, the hotel is located in the heart of Downtown Chico, within a few short blocks of all downtown restaurants, nightlife, and bars. Room block discounts are also available for those looking to host wedding guests.
Led by Chef Michael Iles, former executive chef at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Two Twenty Restaurant is a unique addition to Downtown Chico. The entire restaurant space was renovated prior to opening last year, creating an environment both airy and elegant. The addition of a piano bar and lounge opens the dining room, which in itself is composed of a formal dining space and an area that’s more relaxed— yet still luxurious—where people can enjoy drinks or dine. The menu is just as impressive and reflects Chef Michael’s 30 years of restaurant experience. The resulting effort is referred to as California classic cuisine with a twist, served in an intimate setting by a warm and friendly staff. With a focus on fresh ingredients and sourcing items whenever possible locally, Two Twenty not only delights with delicious meals, but supports the local food community as well. Rehearsal dinner parties are invited to work with the chef directly to craft a menu perfectly suited to their palette.
WITH SO MANY CONVENIENT AND DELICIOUS OFFERINGS, THE HOTEL DIAMOND AND TWO TWENTY RESTAURANT OFFER A COMBINED EXPERIENCE UNLIKE ANY OTHER IN CHICO. CALL THE HOTEL DIAMOND AT 530.893.3100 OR TWO TWENTY RESTAURANT AT 530.895.1515 FOR MORE INFORMATION. 36

The restaurant is perfectly designed for rehearsal dinners, with multiple locations available to accommodate parties of up to 100 people. For those with smaller parties looking for privacy, the restaurant provides a beautiful subterranean wine room that is both intimate and cozy; for larger parties, the restaurant boasts two large banquet rooms. Directly adjacent to the restaurant itself is the hotel’s artisan cocktail bar, providing yet another locale with an atmosphere all its own for celebrating guests. Two Twenty offers multiple options on how the bill can be split as well, allowing for the hosts to decide just how many drinks they are providing each member of the dinner party, and when the remaining drink orders will be kept on separate bar tabs at the bar.
Corona's Cocktail Corner After the 'I dos,' it’s time to relax, unwind, and let loose with your friends and family. We all know what that means: reception cocktails! I've selected some luxurious suggestions for you to offer at your party that are sure to elicit laughter, tears of joy, and great stories. The Old Fashioned is a classic cocktail from the 19th century and a mainstay of the current scene. Its smooth appearance, yet simple recipe, makes it an excellent choice for the gentleman at your wedding party. Nothing goes better with his button-up shirt and vest than the elite refined Old Fashioned, besides, of course, his date. Alternative: Sazerac featuring rye and a splash of Absinthe OLD FASHIONED RECIPE: • 2 oz Bourbon (I like Elijah Craig Small Batch.) • 1/2 oz simple syrup (equal parts water and sugar) • 4 dashes Angostura Bitters • Served with an ice ball, an orange peel, and Luxardo cherry garnish What goes better with celebrations than champagne? While you think of an answer, let me introduce you to the lightly sweet and incredibly fresh French 75. Another classic, this WWI-era creation creates gin lovers on the spot. Everyone is sure to dance with this deceptively potent yet elegant beverage. Alternative: White Linen featuring fresh sliced cucumber and no bubbly. While many recipes exist, try: • .75 oz gin (but you can tell them it's vodka) • .75 oz St. Germain Liqueur (instead of simple syrup) • .75 oz fresh lemon juice • Top with sparkling wine & a lemon twist. Groomsmen
Gift Galore! When you’re marrying your love in front of friends and family, there are a select few men proudly standing beside you during this monumental moment. Those men shared in your journey down the aisle, and thanking your groomsmen with a personalized gift is a thoughtful gesture that serves as a reminder of this festive day but also an expression of your friendship. We’ve gathered some neat and helpful gift ideas to thank your groomsmens: Pocket knife: A perfect tool for any woodsmen. Pocket knives make great presents because they are functional and pretty darn cool. Booze: For such a jubilant celebration, it’s hard to imagine any glass will be left empty on your wedding day. Local handcrafted breweries and distilleries offer endless options of adult beverages, making it easy on you and rewarding for the receiver. Watches: Probably the most stylish and useful accessory to give to your groomsmen. Wrist watches have that magical quality of upscaling and completing any outfit. Plus, if you want to get extra sentimental, you can engrave them with a date, inside joke, or a name.

Merging Your Spaces 6 TIPS FOR BLENDING INTERIOR DESIGN STYLES With marriage comes compromise, so moving in together for the first time can present each person with a unique set of challenges. One of them is combining interior design styles. I’ve compiled a few tips for newlyweds to create a cohesive look within the home. 1. Keep what you love. Purge items that don't bring happiness or serve a purpose. 2. Be Eclectic. Don't focus on matching your furniture or sticking to one style. Sticking to classic design elements will help your home aesthetic from looking too trendy. Art, pillows, throws, and paint are the cheapest items to buy and change every couple years, especially if renting. 3. Window shop. Check out local furniture stores and websites. Talk with with your spouse about items or design details you like. Take pictures for future reference. He may want rustic while she prefers a bit more traditional. Many couples can easily settle debates while seeing what they do and don’t like in person. 4. Ask a professional. When visiting your local design store, knowledgeable staff members will assist with questions about your room. Many offer free advice or design services. Take advantage of
designers in-store too! Have your home measurements ready as well as photos of your room. Think of furniture as an investment so make sure to ask how it’s made and what kind of warranty it carries. 5. Don’t be afraid to DIY. Nowadays we have products like milk paint and gel stain to change the look of a piece from Craigslist or cabinetry without breaking the bank. DIY projects can help couples communicate and work together. Watching shows on HGTV is an excellent source of inspiration. The home improvement show 'Fixer Upper' is my favorite. 6. Start Slow. Often, decorating a home takes time if you don’t know where to start. Set goals for the next year, whether it’s painting a room or purchasing a new piece of furniture for the house. Creating a life together starts in the home. Communicating and collaborating will bring you closer as you discover your unique taste and style.

Glamour On The Go! While rural wedding venues have grown in popularity, few couples anticipate the inconveniences that come with planning an off-the-grid wedding. These challenges include limited access to temperature controlled, indoor plumbing, and a clean, photogenic space where the wedding party can get ready. The last thing any bride wants on her wedding day is to find herself traipsing in the cold to an outhouse behind a rustic barn or touching up her mascara with a smudged mirror. Chad and Angie Ackerson, who remember having a less-than-glamorous experience getting ready at their wedding venue 16 years ago, came up with an idea to help take all the stress out of getting ready at an off-the-grid locale. In September of 2017, the Ackersons founded their business, GlamTrailer, a fully self-contained, mobile dressing room with all the amenities any bride and her squad will need on the big day. The couple bought a spacious, new trailer and customized every detail to create the GlamTrailer. They removed the bedroom, built a full patio space, installed a new TV, and furnished the interior with sofas, salon
chairs, and mirrors. Just over 30 feet long, the GlamTrailer includes a full dressing room, bathroom, salon station, shower, refrigerator, microwave, heating, and A/C, making it the ideal get-ready space for any remote event. Once a customer rents the GlamTrailer, the Ackersons manage all the details from there. They drive the trailer to the location on the day of the event, set everything up, and return at the end of the event to remove the trailer. The Ackersons provide a timely, convenient, and stress-free experience. Above all, they ensure that their customers feel glamorous and well taken care of on their special day. Serving the entire Northern California area, GlamTrailer is a perfect option for a wide variety of events beyond weddings, including hairdressing shows, dance competitions, and any event requiring a space to get ready. With possibilities for more trailers and an even broader travel range in the future, GlamTrailer is set to become the goto solution for a glamorous get-ready experience at any event. When it comes to finding the best insurance for your business, exploring all avenues can be arduous and complicated. Working with an InterWest broker who is experienced in your specific industry will make this process much less confusing. As one of the leading insurance brokerages in the country since 1910, the brokers at InterWest put the financial health of their clients first. We recently caught up with three construction specialists at InterWest who work closely with contractors of all sizes—both locally and regionally—focusing on protecting assets and reducing the impact of loss through partnership and advocacy. They support their clients by providing detailed coverage analysis, specialized claims advocacy, customized risk management, and by evaluating alternative solutions that aren’t commonly addressed.

Constructing Your Best Business Plan With InterWest Insurance Services
MATTHEW BAUER, JOLEEN ILLES, & TONY POZAS TONY POZAS Tony Pozas, a commercial broker and vice president, moved to Chico from the Napa Valley to attend Chico State University, where he studied criminal justice and later met his wife Shannon. After graduating, they decided to make Chico their permanent home. Tony’s personal experience with insurance came as the manager of a construction business. Frustrated with his insurance broker, who had a hands-off approach to the business, he found the entire process very confusing as he was left to research and answer his questions himself. He couldn’t imagine other insurance brokers being much different, and certainly had no interest in a career as a commercial broker himself. A breakfast with his good friend, Keith Schuler—who is now InterWest’s CEO— opened his eyes to what was possible in commercial insurance brokering. Keith’s hands-on approach to insurance was exactly what Tony had been searching for in his own construction business, and he found the subject matter presented by Keith to not only be easily understood, but exciting as well. The conversation progressed throughout the morning and eventually found Tony discussing career opportunities at InterWest with Keith. He has been with the company ever since, providing the same style of insurance service to his clients as Keith has, and ensuring that

no other business owner experiences the level of frustration or bewilderment as he had in his own business so many years ago.
MATTHEW BAUER Bay Area native, Matthew Bauer, CRM, Certified Risk Manager, is a San Diego State University graduate. He, too, met his wife, Marisa, while finishing school. The two moved to Chico where he began his career with InterWest as a commercial insurance broker working closely with clients to evaluate unique exposures and align insurance policies to adequately cover
any interruption that could create financial loss. In 2007, shortly after Matt was hired at InterWest, he decided that this level of insurance advocacy would be his life’s work, so he and Marisa decided to make Chico their home. Matt and Marisa now have two children and couldn’t be happier in their decision to make Chico their permanent home. Over the years, Matt has turned his focus to the construction industry. As a specialist, he works directly with business owners, providing proactive solutions to minimize risk early on. By decreasing risk potential from the start, Matt is often able to lower the cost of his clients’ insurance and help them save more of their hard-earned money. As risk is directly correlated with cost when it comes to insurance, having the proper knowledge and tools available to assist his clients in spotting potential risk hazards allows not only a cost savings, but a lower chance of having to ever file a claim in the first place. The fewer claims that have to be filed, the longer those cost savings continue, and when it comes to commercial insurance, those savings can be remarkable.
local firm in Chico and within three years had moved up to a broker position. In 2007, the search for additional tools and resources for her clients brought her to InterWest, and she has been with the company ever since. As a strategic partner to her clients, she collaborates with her team at InterWest to ensure that they are receiving the ideal insurance for their individual businesses. She understands that insurance buyers are looking to obtain insurance in a different way now than ever before, and that everyone is ultimately searching for three things: more control over their insurance decisions, greater profit retention within their business, and a reduction in incidents that might require insurance claims. Joleen’s approach to insurance and subsequent process with her clients guarantees all three. As a goal-focused individual, Joleen listens to her client’s needs and charts the proper path to get them there. Her cross-functional background with qualifications in large account management allows her to assist clients in building wealth within their companies rather than spending time worrying over risk management. When we caught up with Joleen, Tony, and Matt, we asked them why their clients select InterWest as their insurance broker of choice, and what sets their firm apart from the rest.
JOLEEN ILLES Joleen Illes, CRIS, is a commercial insurance broker at InterWest and mother of two. As the former owner of the Chico based bakery, Elegant Cakes, Joleen spent her fair share of time working with insurance companies, as all small business owners do. Eventually, she too became interested in the inner workings of the insurance industry and closed her bakery to focus fully on a career in insurance. She began as an account manager at a small
Joleen: I think it’s essential that business owners evaluate their broker, not just request quotes. It’s important to hire a broker who has expertise in the industry you work in, and who works for a brokerage that can provide the support resources and services you may need. Many of the smaller firms are unable to provide the level of resources and expertise that InterWest can. We also have construction-specific collaboration teams, called practice groups, which meet quarterly to contribute their expertise to case or claim discussions, new legislation, develop client trainings, etc. Our meetings are like brainstorming sessions filled with brokers and support staff who have an incredible amount of construction knowledge. Tony: Placing insurance is easy, but helping people manage their risk is challenging, fun and, perhaps more importantly, very rewarding. Knowing that you helped make a difficult situation easier for someone is something we all take pleasure in at InterWest. It’s a team effort, and something
we all get to celebrate at the end of each day. The hard part is understanding people’s challenges and where their frustrations lie, but asking the proper questions to determine that information is something we do incredibly well. We handle construction risks in every state, whether they have one employee or one thousand employees, all right out of Chico. What we can do as a team out of our office still excites and amazes me to this day. Matthew: Most people don’t realize how large of a reach InterWest actually has. We’re in the top five privately owned brokerages, as far as revenue size, in California. We consider it a huge accomplishment, but only because it’s a valid measure and testament to how many clients believe in the work we do. We’re not a standard, transactional insurance brokerage; we’re investing heavily in developmental producers, and we’re growing organically. We’re not just an insurance placement brokerage. stationed at Camp David. As a single mother to her son, Jay, she was understandably picky when it came to who she allowed into their lives, but his loving and respectful nature quickly won both of them over. Renee and Chris were married a short while later. Chris was born and raised in Red Bluff. When he completed his fouryear contract with the Navy in 2003, they decided to move back to Chico so he could finish his degree in exercise physiology at Chico State University. The move was a welcomed change for Renee as she was used to the swinging extremes of shoveling snow and exhaustion from intense humidity. Needless to say, she was excited that Chico had neither. She looked through the help wanted ads when they arrived and set up an interview with Brian Sweeney at Asset Management Group for a position as his executive assistant. The two clicked immediately, and she began working for him three days later. Rather than merely have Renee perform assistant duties, it was necessary to Brian that Renee become licensed as a financial advisor. At the time, she didn’t know the difference between a mutual fund and an IRA, but she knew she could learn. She studied intensely, passed her licensing exam five short months later, and enjoyed the subject matter so much that she went on to earn her MBA (Masters in Business Administration) from Chico State. Upon graduating, Brian asked her to join Asset Management Group as an advisor and part of the eventual succession team for his business. Having been with Asset Management Group for 14 years and serving as an advisor for nine, Renee can’t imagine having it any other way. She now works side by side with Brian and his son, Joe Sweeney, helping clients define their financial goals and developing a plan to help them achieve it. Rather than focus on just building an asset allocation for their client, the team creates an achievable savings and spending plan, allowing them to live comfortably if any changes in income should arise. They educate, counsel, and assist their clients through all changes in life, making sure that their financial goals remain intact; this approach to advising develops strong relationships with their clients that are familial, similar to one an individual would have with their family doctor.

Renee Michel at Asset Management Group Originally from Thurmont, Maryland, Renee Michel is no stranger to small-town living. Home to less than 7,000 residents, this northwestern Maryland community is best known as the location of one of the President’s retreat, Camp David. Her father built their home by hand in 1973, and her family has lived on the 16-acre plot of land since. Renee picked up her first job when she was 11, babysitting over the weekends, and began working at her dad’s office when she turned 13. Always described as fiercely independent, she got a “real” job the first moment she could, serving food three times a day at a local summer camp when she was 14. Renee enjoyed the work, and it pushed her into the food service industry where Renee had numerous jobs including bartending. She loved meeting new people and socializing, and the position paid her to do just that. It was during her time as a bartender that she met her husband, Chris Michel, who was in the Navy and 56

Their business has grown consistently over the past seven years, and Renee couldn’t be more excited for what the next seven years will bring. As Renee’s husband put it, “She won the lottery when Brian hired her,” and the sentiment is shared with Renee. She works alongside 20 individuals who value family and community beyond everything else, but also know how to have a great time. They all genuinely care about each other and encourage one another without competition. As a result, there has never been a day where she has woken up not wanting to go to work, and that is, perhaps, the best accomplishment of all. Renee loves living in Chico and is thankful for the opportunity to serve on the local Salvation Army and California Women for Agriculture boards. When she’s not with her clients or serving on boards, she can probably be found on her couch bingeing British shows on Netflix and reading her favorite magazines.

A Dream Kitchen Originally from Vashon Island, a small blip off the coastline of Seattle, Tom Rosenow moved to Chico in 1987 to attend Chico State and pursue a degree in creative writing. It was here, during his junior year, that he met Debbie, who was studying math and working on her teaching credential. As so many Chico stories go, the two fell for each other and were married a short while later. Tom eventually found his true calling in IT (information technology) and Debbie secured a position teaching in Oroville, so the two decided to drop their roots in Chico. They had two children and decided to purchase a home in 1998 that would better fit their growing family. They looked at older Chico homes with bigger lots, but found they came with their fair share of older home problems. They looked at new homes that were semi-customizable, but found those homes came with no yard at all. They finally toured a spec home in the first phase of a brand new development near Pleasant Valley High School school, and though there wasn’t much that the two could change about it, the location was great, it was brand new, and it had a great yard. They took the gamble and decided to be one of the first thirty families in the new neighborhood. Over the years, the house began to wear. The kids grew up and took off to college, leaving Tom and Debbie as a couple of empty nesters who were itching for a little bit of change in a house that hadn’t seen much renovation since they purchased it. They decided to start by upgrading their kitchen.

Reminiscent of most new Chico homes in the late 90s, the kitchen was designed with honey oak cabinets, boxed fluorescent lighting, and white tile countertops complete with nearly impossible to clean brown grout. They thought about refacing the cabinets or laying a thin piece of granite over the countertops, but decided if they were going to spend a fair amount of money on the project, they were going to do it right. They began collecting bids from local contractors and eventually reached out to Chico Custom Cabinetry. We caught up with Tom and Debbie at their home to hear about their experience. UL: How did you find Chico Custom Cabinetry and what was it like working with them? DR: We read about their work in Upgraded Living and decided to visit their website. They had a number of portfolio projects available within and it was easy to see that they did good work. We called and set up an appointment with John (co-owner at Chico Custom Cabinetry) and he showed up on schedule a few days later to take a look at our kitchen. We clicked with him immediately. It was clear he took great pride in his work and he had such a genuine nature about him. He was upfront and honest about his schedule and what it would cost to put the project together. We expressed our budget to him and he happily agreed to work within it. UL: What made this project custom? TR: We told him what we were looking to do and he gave us his thoughts on how we could best put it together. He was very intent on making sure that the new kitchen would be customized to exactly what we as a couple needed. Neither of us wanted to bend down and search the far back of our cabinets for items, and we both knew that would only get more difficult as time went on. A lot of his recommendations revolved around accessibility and the end result

is a kitchen that is truly accessible. He recommended that we get rid of the soffit and take the cabinetry to the ceiling which also made cleaning considerably easier as it removed the hard to reach areas on top of the cabinets that tend to collect significant dust. His advice was wonderful and he was so flexible when it came to changes mid-stream. UL: What was unique about the cabinets you created? DR: We changed our minds on the cabinets during the design process and rather than slide out trays, wanted to go with deep pull-out drawers that gave us access to everything at once. John changed the design and managed to keep the new design within our original budget. He invited us to the shop to see everything in progress which was a unique experience. Nothing was pressboard or bought from a factory somewhere; they made everything by hand out of real wood. When it came time to stain the cabinets, none of the colors felt quite right to me, so John mixed up a custom stain color that would work best with the knotty alder wood we had chosen. It was perfect! He even gave me a custom stain board that I carried around for the next few months while deciding on our granite, fixtures, and backsplash. There were so many little extras that made life much easier in our kitchen, including a fullyaccessible spice rack that John built from scratch, lazy susan for corner cabinet access, and side pantry to hide pet food and cleanup items.
UL: Do you have any advice for other homeowners looking to remodel? DR: Spending a little extra to have something that is truly custom and right for you makes all the difference. We ended up getting exactly what we wanted at a price we really felt good about. Budget for a little extra time to any timeline just to give yourself some space if changes or unforseen events pop up. UL: Would you refer Chico Custom Cabinetry to friends and family? DR: Of course, we would most definitely recommend them. It was all so easy and they were both flexible and professional. We had great conversations with John and felt totally comfortable leaving our house in his hands. It takes a good deal of trust to do that, and we felt like we made a great friend in John during the months we worked with him. He was honest, upfront, and always clear that it didn’t matter what he wanted, it was only important that what we decided on would be right for us over the next 20 years. His vision blended with ours and our new kitchen is perfect!
UL: How long did it take to put everything together? TR: We originally met with John in July and we approved the kitchen design in mid-August. He began working on it right after. We made a couple changes to the design along the way and he quoted 6 weeks before we started. His house was right in the path of the wildfires in Paradise earlier this year, so there was a bit of a delay there, but even with the fires and our changes to the original design, John managed to finish everything in just 8 weeks. He kept in communication with us the entire time and put in overtime at the house working with his business partner, Dave, until 8pm on a number of nights and worked weekends just to make sure they could complete the project quickly for us. They were absolutely great to work with.

Now that the holidays are over, it's finally time to dive into the new year. To start off each new year, I like to purge my house of items I haven’t used all year and organize like mad; this DIY project was inspired by just that. We visited Eighth & Main and found this stunning organic piece of wood crafted from Anderson's Rustic Furniture and transformed it into a fun bathroom organizer!

DANA’S SOUL-LUTION The word for the new year: detox! New year’s resolutions have been getting a bit of a bad rap lately; it seems as if everybody has given up before they’ve begun! However, there is a way to not dread the inevitable doom of a new year’s resolution, and it’s to make your resolution something you’ll enjoy! How about I break it down into three steps: body, mind, and soul.
READY TO FEED
Your Soul? How many times have you said, "I’ll be happy when?" A new car, a new job, a desire to lose weight…don’t fall into the game of waiting for happiness—it's a choice. This is your one life; embrace and love your authentic self. Living in the moment can bring you so much joy. There will only ever be one incredible you, it is so necessary to take care of yourself so you can continue to be the rockstar you are in the new year. Make it the best one yet.
Dana Grant is a Master Life Coach, co-Founder of Cali’flour Foods, and Creator of CaliSoul Coaching. You can find soul nourishing recipes, ways to balance your mind and body, and help to create the life you crave. Let’s start with the bod pod! My Detox Vegetable Soup is a perfect way to reset after the holidays and to add a big boost to your immune system. Soup that not only boosts the immune system but also nourishes your body from the inside out! It is a superpowerpacked soup that you can whip up in one pot, and it’s so delicious. DETOX VEGGIE SOUP INGREDIENTS: • 1 cup purple cabbage • 1 cup green cabbage • 1 cup chopped carrots • 2 cups kale (remove stems and tear leaves) • 2 cups celery diced • 2 cups broccoli, chopped • 1 cup diced tomatoes • 2 tablespoons garlic, minced • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced • ½ cup fresh lemon, juiced • ½ cup organic vegetable broth • 6–7 cups water • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper • 1 tablespoon turmeric • 1 cup fresh Italian parsley • Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste DIRECTIONS: Heat a large pot over high heat adding celery, carrots, garlic, ginger broccoli, tomatoes, salt, and pepper. Sauté for 5 minutes until veggies
are tender. Add water and vegetable broth. Bring the pot to a rolling boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to a simmer then add lemon, cayenne, cinnamon, turmeric, cabbage, and kale. Stir and continue to cook for 15 minutes. Remember not to overcook. Top with fresh Italian parsley. Chef’s Note: You can add 2 cups of tofu or chicken to this for added protein. Declutter Detox For the Mind Instead of adding more to your list this year, how about adding less? My motto is, 'Less is the new more.' Simplify your schedule. Ask yourself, do I benefit from adding that to my day? Does that help the balance I’ve created? If the answer is no, don’t even sweat adding it to your planner. Start your day with five minutes of quiet meditation. Focus on what you love, what you think is beautiful, and what simple pleasures in your day give you joy. Keep a gratitude journal. Writing things down is a cathartic and calming way to keep track of your day and your progress in whatever you may do. In a sense, it's an absolute game changer! Set boundaries. I am all for seizing opportunities, but it is also wise—if not essential for your self-care—to say 'no' on occasion, especially to commitments that overextend you. No one benefits from a worn out self. Balance is all about creating healthy patterns and removing the things that drain your energy. Did you know that your body responds to all your thoughts? Focus on what you love, not what you don’t like. Talk more about what rocks your world instead of bashing what drives you crazy. Your cells are listening, and your body will thank you.

Tamago Zosui INGREDIENTS: • 1 ½ cups dashi • 1 ½ cups vegetable or beef stock • 2 cups cooked rice • 1 garlic clove, minced • 1-inch ginger minced, peeled • 8 ounces kabocha squash • 1 egg, lightly beaten • 8 ounces ground pork • 1 bunch scallion sliced, separated • 2 tablespoons sugar
DIRECTIONS: Bring dashi and stock to a boil. Next, add rice, garlic, ginger, kabocha, and shiitake to a boil. Drop to a simmer and cook for 20 to 30 minutes stirring occasionally. While rice is simmering, cook pork—add 1 tablespoon of oil to a medium pan over high heat. Add pork, once it has changed color, and ginger and scallion. Stir for a couple of minutes. Add miso and sugar to pork, mix well. Once the miso is integrated, add the sake and water. When it just about comes to a simmer, drop heat low, cover, and simmer for about 10 minutes or until almost all the liquid is gone. Once the rice is at the right consistency, add salt, pepper, and light soy to taste. Add the egg and swirl around for 10 seconds. Plate Tamago Zoshi to a bowl and spread miso pork on top. Garnish with shredded nori, scallions, and katsu bushi.
• 3 tablespoons white miso paste • 3 tablespoons sake • ¼ cup water • Handful Shiitake mushrooms, sliced • Salt and pepper to taste • Light soy to taste

New Year's Resolutions
I resolve, through my heart and music, to appeal to our higher, collective love, to soothe all wounded hearts, to restore faith in our ability to rise above hatred and sing in harmony with my brothers and sisters. –Mark McKinnon I resolve to just to only consume 100 percent unprocessed and clean food and drink. –Fox E. Jeff New Year’s resolution is a balance. Regarding work and sanity, I feel on some occasions, I’ve done so much for others that I overwork myself without realizing it, and I forget to take care of myself sometimes. So, I need to remind myself to relax and not worry so much. Also, to find love, even in all the wrong places at the worst times. That’s spontaneous. –James Chato Visit New York, perform stand up outside of Chico more, and to be happier this time next year than I am now. –Annie Fischer I want to stop stressing over the small stuff and learn to move on forward. – Chris Barboza My New Year’s resolution is to take my creative writing more seriously by making time to write every morning, even if it’s just 250 words. I’d like 2018 to be the year I get my first story acceptance at a literary journal. –Emily Huso

Nick plans to take full advantage of Chico a nd the surrounding area’s fresh ingredients and is true to his word when he emphasizes Pop’s farm-to-fork commitment. You can find Nick pulling a red wagon, filled with the freshest, local ingredients during any morning with a local Farmers Market. The inspiration for new pizzas stems from Butte County’s colossal landscape of goods. Their wood for the restaurant's brick oven stove is even sourced from Durham. Not only is the new chef’s focus geared toward feeding the Chico masses fresh, delicious food that’s locally sourced, but he also has a goal of supporting our region’s economy. “I want to harness the value of local produce,” Nick said. “I want to partner with every local purveyor that we can use and fully integrate into the farming landscape of Chico.”
IN PIZZA WE CRUST Pizza is the unofficial food of America, and with so many varieties in making a genuinely classic dish, finding your favorite pizza joint is a quest few take lightly. Once that holy grail is uncovered, you’re hooked, and we found ours at Pop’s Wood Fire Pizza. Pop’s, an upscale dining pizzeria, has been dishing out delicious wood-fired pizzas seven days a week for the past three years. The restaurant was originally on wheels as a mobile catering pizza service, but as their popularity grew, owner Andy Shepherd knew it was time to expand, so he opened Pop’s Wood Fire Pizza in the Forest Parkway Shopping Center. Looking to do more than simply meet the growing demand for his tasty pizza creations, Andy also had plans to enhance his menu and team. When it came time to make well on that mission, he turned to his buddy, Nick Rosemann, for advice. Their friendship began about three years ago when Andy first opened Pop’s. Once the two started bouncing ideas off one another, it was clear their chemistry in the kitchen was a match made in pizzamaking heaven. The dynamic duo worked so 68

well together that Nick was Andy’s obvious first choice when he went in search of a head chef to launch Pop’s new menu and expansion. Nick hails from a long culinary background, but dedicated his services to the beer industry for the past 10 years. His return to the kitchen was warmly welcomed, and he’s excited to take the opportunity to prove that a classic meal like pizza has plenty of room for his unique innovations. Each handcrafted
To further accentuate the local area ingredients, Pop’s will soon serve Sunday brunch. They will be kicking off the midmorning meals on Super Bowl Sunday. You can catch the Big Game, February 4th, on the restaurant's three 48-inch HD television sets. Cheese and charcuterie plates, served family style, are offered along with their regular slew of pizzas. Plenty of beer-based bloody mary’s and champagne will also be on hand to add to the festive affair.

When Laura Springer made her trek from Colorado to California, she was hopeful the new beginning would open up relations with her estranged son and be the fresh start she desperately longed for in life. On a wish and prayer she arrived safely, but when her plans didn’t pan out, Laura left Magalia with a few suitcases, her cat, and a broken heart. While sitting outside a local McDonald’s, eager and frustrated to find housing, a miracle happened. Sheltered from the rain by her car, Laura received a call from The Jesus Center, welcoming

her to their facility. Through volunteering, leading a weekly devotional for her peers, along with a list of chores, Laura can stay at the shelter longer with room to herself. With this new transformation, Laura tearfully explained how grateful she is to find comfort in her new friendships and responsibilities; she is looking forward to what her new future holds.
AT THE SALON: Laura was in desperate need of a cut and color, and Crucial Salon hairstylist, Lindsay Allison, was up for the challenge. Lindsay chopped off about six inches in length and added long layers that framed Laura’s beautiful face perfectly. The cut was followed by a full balayage in low lights coloring. Lindsay nailed the warm tones added to her hair. The array of shades and volume of her fresh cut and color paired perfectly with her face shape and complexion. Because Laura wasn’t accustomed to wearing makeup on the regular, makeup artist Caitlin Patterson, went in and highlighted her best assets— her eyes. To complete Laura's new look, a light lip shade was applied to match her warm smile.

Suzette To say Suzette Harris has lived a life of hardship would be an understatement. The Chico born and raised mother tragically lost her husband at a young age. His death catapulted her and their very young son into a world of fight or flight, and it left them homeless. A result of this turbulent transition, Suzette and her 11-year-old son both suffer from PTSD. She has been in survival mode ever since. Despite her trials and tribulations, Suzette maintains a cheery outlook on life. It’s essential to her keep a healthy lifestyle, not only for her sake, but also for her son's. Suzette’s priority is to continue fostering a nurturing environment for her child. She’s faced a lot of challenges living and raising her son in a shelter, but she’s pushing for independence and striving to secure a place of their own.
AT THE SALON: Sam Ballard of Sam’s Hair Fantastic considered Suzette’s facial structure before taking her shears to Suzette’s bleached-blonde, short hair. Her mane was growing out a previous dye job that Sam revived by adding warm blonde with copper accents, and red undertones were added to give Suzette’s new edgy cut some much-needed dimension. A sweeping bang also drew attention to Suzette’s sparkling blue eyes. When it came to Suzette’s makeup, Sam wanted to highlight her honey-toned skin and blue eyes, but first, she had to neutralize the redness of Suzette’s complexion. Her eyes were painted in hues of browns and greens, enhanced by a smudged eyeliner. A little bronzer and sparkle were added to her cheeks, and a nude lip liner with a pearlescent gloss was the last finishing touch to Suzette’s stunning transformation.

Kim
AFTER
Kim Bailey found salvation in her darkest hours. She went right from jail to the Chico Salvation Army after serving five years in prison. She had been battling with addiction since she was 11 years old and, being surrounded by negative influences, those decisions caused her to miss out on raising her children, spending holidays with family, and maintaining a sense of normalcy. After she graduated from the Salvation Army rehab program, she applied for a job in their kitchen. Because she is a convicted felon, Kim needed the approval of her Salvation Army superiors to go to bat for her in securing her job as kitchen manager. They certainly had no problem doing this great favor because Kim had proven, time after time, she was ready to make positive changes in her life. She's been enjoying her sober living and prepares meals for more than 150 people per day. Her story is inspiring for others battling addiction, and Kim understands, first-hand their struggle and continues to help in any way possible.
AT THE SALON: When Kim went in for her hair appointment, she had peek-a-boo, dyed blue strands, and Claudia Fricke Lohse, owner and stylist of Mecca Salon, respected and worked around her previous dye job. Claudia worked her magic and added a balayage weave coloring, which, in return, looked like natural highlights, and blended the blue strands right in as if they were supposed to be there. A trim to freshen up her locks was in order, although, Kim wanted to keep her hair long so she could pull it back while she worked in the kitchen. A deep conditioning followed her dye job, leaving Kim’s hair light, bouncy, and voluminous. Since Kim already has a natural curl, Claudia took her curling wand, to further enhance that wave. Makeup artist, Caitlin Patterson, then went in and completed Kim’s makeover with a soft, natural, yet sultry look. The emphasis on enhancing Kim’s deep green eyes was executed flawlessly.

Barbara Barbara Carlos is starting this year turning over a new leaf. The struggles she faces daily with raising her grandson, who she has been caring for since he was 8 months old, along with recently leaving, and healing, from a domestic relationship, hasn't been easy for her or her family. With all the lemons life has thrown at her, a fresh, healthy start is more than welcomed. In between motherly duties and working full-time as a caregiver at Happy At Home, she is busy pursuing her GED, establishing credit, paying off medical bills, and keeping a confident demeanor for she and her grandson. It's been rough for Barbara, but she's looking forward to her fresh start.
AT THE SALON: Dimensions Salon hairstylist, Quilla Sorensen, is credited with Barbara's new look that rejuvenated her youthful spirit. Barbara received a full-coverage dye job to take care of those pesky gray strands. Next, bright red and copper highlights were added for dimension. Since Barbara likes to wear hair naturally curly and away from her face, Quilla trimmed a little length and evened out her layers, which made it easier for Barbara to wash-and-go. For this photoshoot, though, Quilla took a flat iron to Barbara’s freshly cut and colored hair. Quilla couldn't bare leaving Barbara's 5-yearold grandson out of the makeover fun. She generously cut and styled his hair as well. To complete her new look, makeup artist, Caitlin Patterson, glammed Barbara up with a smokey eye, accented by champagne lilac shadows to bring out her eyes. A pink glossy lip liner, with a light, rose color lip shade, created a sheen to match her bright eyes.

Doug Oroville native, Doug Pope, hit rock bottom when his drug habit, mixed with counterfeiting checks, landed him in jail. Doug’s time locked up was a revelation for him, and although he considers it his worst time in life, he believes it is a blessing in disguise. Upon his release, Doug made strides for his sobriety, and when he found out he had a son, Doug went the extra mile to gain full custody of his little 2-year-old boy, which led him to the Esplanade House. He currently works full-time as a roofer for Sierra Roofing and is also taking the proper channels to get his GED at his own pace, though, his end goals are to become a barber with hopes of owning a shop.
AT THE BARBER SHOP: Doug’s hair was already fairly short when he went in for his cut and shave. David Hootman, at The Chop Shop inside Formal Education, cleaned up his sides with a mid-bald fade. When it came to Doug’s straight razor shave, David noticed Doug had very thick and dense facial hair. David took a bit of extra time and made sure his skin was cared for with hot shave lather, shave gel, and even allowed time for a warm towel to soften his hair for a more comfortable, less irritating shave experience. The result was a clean, sharp, and fresh look.

Leslie Back in 2016, Leslie Dunn lost her job in the Los Angeles area while on medical disability. In a search for a simpler, stress-free atmosphere, she made her trek back to Northern California.
AFTER
After caring for many of her elderly loved ones and losing her father, Leslie felt it was time to focus on herself. She landed in Chico, by way of Sacramento, and struggled with finding employment, thereby exhausted her savings. Leslie became homeless, but not hopeless. As soon as she arrived, she fell in love with our quaint little town. Leslie was able to find a home at the Sabbath House and has since returned to school, completing a degree in anthropology at Butte College. Leslie is on track to finish her degree at Chico State University next year and to put her degree to work in education or social work advocacy.
AT THE SALON: When Leslie popped into Mecca Salon to meet her team of fantastic stylists, she didn’t anticipate leaving the salon feeling brand new or with three new best friends. Leslie wanted to bring out her inner goddess and Mecca Salon owner and hairstylist, Claudia Fricke Lohse, did just that with her makeover. A rich, warm brown color lightened Leslie’s hair. An overdo trim was in order, and then hair pieces were added to her fun, braided up-do which created varied textures and depth to her Greek goddess look. To continue with the theme in Leslie’s transformation, Mecca makeup artist, Danielle Leiper, wanted to keep Leslie’s look soft and have her lips be the focus. To start, Danielle evened out her skin tone, eliminating any redness. A dry-to-powder foundation was applied and helped with her oily skin. Leslie’s brows were filled in, and her cheekbones were highlighted giving her definition. A shimmery gold eyeshadow highlighted her brown eyes and berry red lips popped against Leslie's complexion. Finally, her stylish manicure, created by Mecca technician, Sonia Starnes, completed her glowing goddess look that genuinely let Leslie’s inner beauty shine.

What do you do with a degree in English? You become an artist, naturally. Chico ceramist, Margaret Allen, has a knack for throwing things. In her case, what she throws transforms into beautiful works of art. She’s a woman who fires on all cylinders. Her level of excitement, coupled with her rapid-fire speech, was a clear testament of her craft as we strolled through her art-filled home— which is as vividly captivating as her spirit. She’s a maker; a lover of color and creativity. She makes art for art's sake, and it is refreshing.
Admittedly, she finds comfort and inspiration in each wave of eager students who come through her doors, and it’s reflected in her art. Innovations with her creations are iconically recognizable, Margaret’s creative flair forever immortalizes everyday objects like a toaster oven, tools, fly swatter, pots and some obsolete items like a rotary dial payphone and typewriter. She enjoys how the medium allows her to manipulate its form to mimic metal, wood, or anything else her imagination drums up like a tractor that also serves as a whistle—ingenious, lovely, yet functional.
Margaret has been creating with clay for over 35 years, and her love for the art form has poured over into a teaching career at Butte College. For her, the two go hand-in-hand.
Margaret trained as a potter, so a lot of her pieces are, initially, thrown on a potter’s wheel and then later shaped by hand. Because her father was an artist whose works often appeared in the New York Post, Margaret was confident she didn’t want to follow in his footsteps, but that pull to create and continually hone her craft followed her from city-to-city.
“I have a gang of bright students right now who are so percolating,” Margaret said, “they’re just charging ahead, and you start them on a project, wind them up, and let them go, and you’re kind of afraid of what they’ll do because they’ll just explode with effort. They’re a special group of students.” 78

When Margaret found herself living in Los Angeles, her idle hands gravitated toward clay once more. She tracked down renowned ceramic artist Paul Soldner, an artist who introduced raku firing to the western world. Margaret admired his work from afar and had the pleasure of studying under his guidance during the latter part of his career. His parting gift of wisdom still resonates with the artisan who is still learning. “I want to make something that is authentic or what I consider the greatest art to be, and I don’t know how, but [Paul] does,” Margaret said. “And he said, ‘Oh, that’s so simple, you never settle for anything less than capital ‘A.’ You throw your heels in the air, and you go for it.” And she has ever since.
