FROM THE EDITOR June arrives complete with our 5th pet issue. It was supposed to mark my fourth straight cover story. Oh no, that was just not going to happen. I went about my business as usual, prepping my questions, interviewing the cover subject at hand, and all that goes with it. Little did I know that the term “stubborn as a goat” is just that, and more. Actually, when I now have an opportunity to reflect on it, the amazing cover photo simply just does not do justice. It is important to note that when this particular goat rears up on his hind legs, he is over seven feet tall! Which I guess, in some ways, only adds to his superiority over me. You see, Kevin the Nubian Goat, believes he outranks, Kevin the mere Editor in Chief. So what was I going to do? Give in of course. You will understand when you read our cover story. The cover story told by our poster boy himself. I do hope you enjoy! If some sections appear a bit cryptic, do not point a finger my way. All I know for certain is that I enjoyed the time with Beiron and Tina, the delightful owners of this unexpected pet. Kevin’s six acre playground is wonderful and, though I will write another cover story, there will never be another experience such as this! June also comes with new found grins on us locals. Perhaps a parking place or bar stool are just a bit easier to come by. It also carries with it the summer solstice marking the way to the expected heat which, for us locals, is not always something to smile about. For me, it always made way for my summer reading list. I would compile a list of six reads during each school year and relish in it during this wonderful gift of time. Some summers I would devote to books made into movies. Always reading the books first and waiting to be disappointed by the movies. You see, when I read, there is a full colored motion picture going on inside my head. It is not often that Hollywood is able to match that. With a bit of trepidation, I offer a suggested summer reading list in the pages of this month’s issue. Although there are five officially on the list, four additional books are mentioned. I believe you cannot go wrong selecting any or all of them. Please do read the article, as you will better understand not only my feelings about writing, but, more importantly, making recommendations as well. We, at Upgraded Living, also encourage you to post on our social media accounts pictures of what and where you are reading. We are also offering a contest for the best reading reaction to any of our recommended reads. I truly hope you find yourself as enamored with these reads as I already am! The Back Page takes a little turn in honor of Father’s Day. Although I lost my dad in 1990, I still took this opportunity to pen him a letter in honor of dad’s special day. This experience proved enlightening, emotional and managed to bring a huge smile on my face despite the tears in my eyes. Hope you enjoy a glimpse into our relationship. On to July and the celebration of our stars and stripes and our collective sigh at the rising temperature...

C O O L K I D S : J O S H UA M I L L E R & M E R I T G R AC E S C H M I D Not all that glitters is gold, but Joshua Miller and Merit Grace Schmid have the gold medals to prove that their talent is rare. Representing Inspire School of Arts and Sciences, Joshua and Merit competed in the SkillsUSA regional Digital Cinema Production competition, where they had one week to create a five minute video based off a given prompt. They won gold. Next, the two competed at the California state level, this time with 32 hours to create a five minute film. They won gold, again. Moving forward, the two will compete at the national level in Kentucky. This was the first time Inspire has sent kids to compete in the SkillsUSA film competition, making their win even more impressive. Because they won gold, they will be the only duo representing California at the national competition. As students in Digital Media Arts teacher Erin Hall’s classes for several years, they have acquired the technical and creative skills to thrive in these competitions and in their own personal projects. The two attribute their win to creativity, countless hours of dedication, and coffee. They said they like to take the prompt, think of what the judges will expect and do something completely unexpected from it. Most of all, they said that Hall’s classes have given them the skills they need to succeed. “Mr. Hall always tells us to dream big, so we always have this big idea for the film then as we’re working on it, it always goes down to this smaller more achievable idea,” Merit said. “Mr Hall has taught me to try and achieve the biggest thing possible. It’s 10

helped me gain a lot of confidence in my films.” Erin attributed their success to the skills they have learned, but also to their ability to work together and divide and conquer. “When they were up against the gun they knew what they needed to do. It takes that. You have to have the skills, you can't fake it. They're passionate about what they do, they're not just there during class. They're there after class and on the weekends. They're there whenever they can check out the equipment. They're gaining skills not just with me, but also on their own time. They're super hard workers. There was no doubt in their mind, they were going to put everything they had into it, 50th or 1st place.” Joshua said that it’s only once in a blue moon that a project will line up with their vision. “You’ll never achieve perfection,” he said. Even if perfection isn’t attainable, these teens winning gold is as close as it gets. My three most favorite books ever are Pat Conroy’s Beach Music, Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, and Bryce Courtenay’s The Power Of One. Each individual read is not unlike witnessing a magnificent stained glass window shatter and then, right before your eyes, get put back together, piece by piece. They are collectively haunting and inspiring at the same time. This ambivalence lives on after the last page is read. Beach Music remains the only novel that, when I reached the last page, I went right to page one and read the entire novel again. None of them made this summer’s list. If you choose to select one or all, I would love to hear from you about your reading experience.

Read Me It has been said never to recommend books, movies, or restaurants. I have found this out on occasion when friends are passing through town and looking for a place to eat. I have recommended and been told later that they never ate there. They relay that, when they opened the door, there was “sawdust on the floor!” I have always thought that reading is sacred. I spent the good part of my life as a high school English teacher, acutely aware that that meant I was each student’s reading, writing, speaking, and listening mentor. It is difficult to address any of these in isolation as they are dependent on each other. As a result of this time with students, I found that there are two kinds of readers in this world—ones who are actively engaged and ones who stop reading. I discovered myself in a battle over both kinds when I recently picked up the book, 13 Reason Why. Of course, those who simply do not read have their own lonely category. Knowing and recognizing the fact that these two readers exist is perfect for the prospect of being a summer reader, horrible for being in an English classroom. As a result, I always have struggled with the notion that we should not teach great books but rather teach a love of reading.

This summer’s recommended reading, three novels and two pieces of nonfiction, appears suitable for poolside, in a comfortable chair with a fan blowing on you, or that coffee spot you cherish whether right here or on the road. The list is as follows: 1. The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein—The story is told through the eyes of a dog and the pages are filled with every emotion known.

2. The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros—I truly believe that no student should have completed their high school years without reading this book. 3. The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz—This piece can actually be read in a single sit down, however, it continues to draw you back. 4. Luna by Julie Anne Peters—The cover has the phrase, “Everything is about to change.” And this read does just that. 5. The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown—it is easy, simply to be impressed by the research alone. The read itself is also a natural page turner. I sensed a bit of reservation. The conversation, which included a great deal of pointing and gesturing, concluded. And they left. I stood for a long time watching that car disappear into the thin cloud of dust and just kept staring as the light turned to an unfriendly darkness.

We need to get something out of the way right now. You must understand. I was not asked, not even consulted about the prospect of being on the cover of some shiny publication. Had I been? Well, I am not quite certain just what my reply would have entailed. Never mind. What’s done is done, something you think I would somewhat have grown accustomed. It is not that I really believe that goats get a raw deal with all that talk of laziness and stubbornness, and, well, that part about stubbornness is true. So is the truth about being persnickety. OK, so I am getting ahead of myself and with a head like mine, that is not difficult to do. Allow me to regroup and start this story where it began. On a Craigslist post.

I do not believe it was my size that mattered here. No, she had no appreciation that I was not just a goat, but rather, a Nubian goat. My English heritage, with its societal background and, well, how do I say, rather vocal side, needs a certain degree of assimilation as well as appreciation. As does my affectionate side, complete with a nudge of the neck and, yes, actually calling out with heartfelt tones, loud heartfelt tones demonstrating my love. She clearly lacked this appreciation. As a result, strangers began to arrive and leave rather quickly. Then, suddenly, I was swept away in a shaky trailer by a seemingly nice couple. Just as suddenly, I was returned. This whole appreciation and understanding thing seems difficult for some reason.

The woman was nice enough. It was not at all difficult to understand at first that she had gotten in over her head, and it did not help that my head was a full foot taller than hers.

Then, they pulled up. I could see it immediately in her eyes, followed by her engaging smile and confident strides. I also took notice of his quiet, sensitive manner and

A few days later, another trailer showed up; a trailer worthy of my regal ancestry and, quite frankly, my size. I did not recognize the stranger loading me up and could not help but have that unmistakable sinking feeling wash over me yet again. The ride was smooth and the view out the side window promising. Across a narrow, swaying bridge, up a slight hill, and, I was home. I knew it immediately. As I was backed out of the trailer, there they stood. The woman with the enchanting smile and inviting eyes, and the man who now looked comfortable and gentle. As my glance went from them to the surroundings, I suddenly realized I was not merely at home, but rather was bestowed my very own kingdom! The magnificent grounds were vast, hilly and included an edible house and my very own sleeping quarters. A safe venue complete with separate bedrooms and an enclosed front yard. I soon ventured up to meet the friendly, yet quirky neighbor who actually bestowed me my name. I also met my new playmate, the neighbor’s energetic dog offering companionship and movement. We literally have the run of the place. This relationship took a turn for the better when the man and woman brought home a dog of my very own. Beretta, my darling sister and I, share an unmistakable kindred spirit. This kingdom, among others, also includes a herd of other animals that surely must be somewhere down my lineage. They are a bit uncertain of me but, nonetheless, allow me to join in their games. This home was everything I could have wished for and so much more. Still, something was missing, something just wasn’t quite right. I mean, yes, being given the name Kevin helped. After all, it does mean handsome. I do not wish to sound like an ingrate but, something more along the lines of Sir Kevin the Nubian Goat, Esq simply has a better ring to it. And then, it happened. The last piece of the perfect puzzle. The woman with the enchanting eyes arrived home with the ideal gift, one worthy of my regal heritage—a necklace with a magnificent bell attached. Yes, now my every movement would be announced with the beautiful sounds emitted from this gift. I cannot explain the joy. It has been said that this wonderful

sound also keeps me as safe as my sleeping quarters. What a marvelous bonus. I can be taking a must needed nap somewhere up behind the edible house and, with nothing more than the sound of a pretzel bag being opened, I am up and everyone within hearing distance instantly becomes aware that my arrival for a snack is soon. This honorable addition feels almost like being knighted and it allows me to hold my head up higher and my vocal appreciation for this love and recognition all that much louder. With such an ideal setting and family, there remains only a few human handful of things to properly complete this fairytale. The first is to dispel this misguided notion that goats will eat anything. Simply not true, certainly not in my case. I have what is known as a discerning taste. I possess a rather refined pallet. When offered fruit, it may be a definite “no” or a maybe “yes”. Carrots, on occasion, appear appealing, sometimes not so much. I do not clear entire fields but relish in the weeds that match my pallette. I rarely turn down salty pretzels and never refuse a bowl of Alpha-Bits. With that myth laid properly to rest, the next part of the story involves this wonderfully orchestrated late evening dance between me and the man with his comfortable demeanor and gentle ways. Just so you know, the point of the dance is for us to come together, stealth cord wrapped around my neck, and ends with me being led off to the safety of my sleeping quarters. I am fully aware that, due to my regal stature, it is not all that becoming to be such a nightly nuisance. But it is so much more fun! For me. It is also important to note that those evenings he tries to start the dance early are met with that aforementioned stubbornness of the goat. The other is that the change of weather makes no difference to one of us. Me. Each night the dance is completed and I am once again safe. All of this adds up to nothing more than the amazing life given to me by this amazing pair. That brings me to final piece of the puzzle, the best part of this story. The woman with the enchanting eyes, confident strides, and inviting eyes. I learned to stop the panicked prance to follow her each morning as she left the grounds when I learned she would return each day. When she indeed returns is the best part of my day. I come clanging and bleating my way towards her and am always greeted with a snack, some loving, and a much appreciated brushing that helps to rid

my sides of the annoying dandruff flakes. The woman then disappears into the edible house and I instantly hurry around back to my favorite perch. It is located right outside the kitchen window on a ledge of dirt looking directly in on whatever this woman with the enchanting eyes is doing. I settle in and am instantly entranced by the window into her world, entertained by each of her movements, enthralled by these evening rituals. Sometimes I will lean in and rest the side of my large head against the roof beam so as to

get a closer, more intimate look. I often fall asleep, comforted by her mere existence. This special connection to this special couple’s daily routine washes me with an incredible delight and security. You see, after all, when it is all said and done, it has nothing to do with fact that I was going to end up on the cover of some shiny publication. Oh no, it is just with my self-proclaimed regal side, I merely wanted to be asked, to be included in the decision. Afterall, it was they who collectively created Kevin the Nubian Goat. 13

Virginia Coffman is one of those people. Born in 1940, Virginia was Dr. Enloe’s very last patient the day before he officially retired. She grew up on Woodland Avenue, next to One Mile, and attended Linden Street Elementary School decades before it was converted into the administrative offices for Chico Unified School District. Her father was one of Chico’s early real estate developers and, at one time, was one of the more prolific landowners in the area. Her childhood home still stands today, perfectly preserved in time with the rest of the neighborhood as a testament to those early developers. After high school, Virginia moved to Oregon and attended University of Oregon before returning home to earn her teaching credential at Chico State. She was hired for a teaching position in Walnut Creek and taught English and speech there before moving back to Chico in 1970 to help care for her father. She has lived here since. Virginia met and married her husband Dean, a WWII veteran, shortly after she returned to Chico. The two began going to North Valley Eye Care when it was opened by Dr. Val K. Shaw, and they were two of his first patients. Eventually, Dr. Barthelow joined the practice as Dr. Shaw’s protegé, bringing a youthful energy to the practice and a new focus on modern surgical intervention. As the years went on, both Virginia and Dean’s eyesight began to wane. Dean went in for a checkup and found that he had cataracts and was in need of surgery. As it turned out, Virginia did as well, so the two decided to have their surgeries together. Dean’s surgery was business as usual but, during the surgery on Virginia’s left eye, they found that she was in need of a cornea transplant. They reached out to a specialist in Sacramento and had Virginia’s surgery fast-tracked. Due to their access and connections, they were able to expedite her surgery and her eyesight was saved. She later returned to the office for cataract surgery on her right eye. Virginia is quick to mention how easily she could have lost her eyesight, but how thankful she is that the team at North Valley Eye Care was there to help save it. The experience has made her value the precious gift even more. “Dr. Barthelow has been taking care of my eyes since,” Virginia says, “Their staff is on top of their game and I would never go anywhere else. They greet you with happiness and every procedure is treated with the respect it deserves. They are all so helpful and 18

YOUR HEALTH SPORTS VISION TRAINING

Many options are available to athletes trying to be the best they can be. Local gyms and facilities train athletes physically with agility drills, weight training, and plyometrics. Nutritionists create plans to maximize health and performance. Coaches hone skills, strategies, and increase knowledge of mental aspects of the game. Now, athletes looking for even more of an advantage, can do neuro-sensory sports vision training. Even if visual skills are good, they can be enhanced, and an evaluation could pick up any unknown weakness in the visual system to fix. There are at least a dozen visual skills that can be trained. One is depth perception. There is a range of depth perception, and can be trained to be better, enabling quicker prediction of the trajectory of a moving object. Another is how an athlete's eyes work together, which can vary depending on where they are looking. For example, if a right-handed hitter consistently misses low inside pitches, it may be because their brain suppresses an eye when looking down and left. Suppressing an eye is an adaptation mechanism the brain uses not to see double, but without the brain using two eyes, depth perception goes away, decreasing ability to hit the ball. A football receiver would want to make sure suppression doesn't happen when 24

looking up to the right or up to the left so that he is not handicapped when catching over one or both shoulders. Larry Fitzgerald, a wide receiver for the Cardinals, did vision therapy as a child for a similar vision problem and credits vision therapy for enabling him to get where he is today. New technology, like special liquid-crystal glasses, and light systems train reaction time, anticipation and speed. They teach the brain to use limited visual information to anticipate and react to catch, hit, kick, etc. Athletes report after training, the game seems slower. Though the glasses are new, the idea dates back to tachistocope training used by WWII pilots. Light training systems improve eye-hand speed and eye-food speed and have the advantage over traditional agility drills in their unpredictability. Just like in sports, the athlete has to react. An evaluation with a sports vision optometrist can detect any weakness in the visual system, and create a customized training program to target the cause of the weakness. Otherwise, all skills are measurable and can be trained to be even better.

Contrary to common misconceptions, bariatric surgery is not just a last resort for treating obesity. Make sure you have a consistent regimen that includes cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and protecting (sunscreen!) your skin everyday. Seriously, people. Wash your face. Okay? Okay.

Their Precleanse is fabulous (and selfexplanatory) and now comes in a balm that I'm obsessed with! You just take a little and massage it into your skin and it will literally melt your makeup and all the dirt and grime right off! Number 2: Now that your face is clean and moisturized and happy, time to provide coverage and protection. I really like the It! Cosmetics line and their CC Cream has spf 50 (Glory!), provides this amazing creamy coverage, is anti-aging and smells like oranges. You can set it or touch up with their foundation powder if you like a fuller coverage or a more matte finish. Number 3: Concealer! Number one request in doing makeup—"I just don't want to look so tired and my skin is dull." Concealer is a nap in a stick. I have joined the Shape

Tape by Tarte Cosmetics Revolution, and no, it is not actually tape. It is a seriously full coverage, won't-budge concealer that you can actually use as highlighter when you're contouring. You can use it to spot correct when you don't really need full coverage for your foundation but just in certain areas. Use sparingly—for reals...a little goes a long way. Number 4: Babababrows! Brows are everything and finding the right brow product is overwhelming. If pencils are your tool of choice, It! Cosmetics has a universal taupe brow pencil that pretty much looks great on everyone. For a brow that won’t move and you can actually wear around for a couple of days—I found Wunderbrow. It’s a gel that, once set is waterproof, transferproof and on point. I recommend buying the brush that they sell because it helps a lot in the application. You can find this product online through Wunderbrow themselves, but I’ve recently seen it released at CVS. Number 5: Pucker up! Doing wedding makeup primarily for the last decade and half the main requirement for makeup products would be their staying power. How many of you apply your lipgloss, lipstick or... chapstick, all day long? Or just have dry sad lips? I rediscovered Lipsense and it’s the best two-part product of lipstick—which is like a liquid laquer that is then sealed with gloss. Once in place—doesn’t transfer or budge at all. Not on your coffee cup, wine glass, your man, or your face! So great! You have to find a distributor that sells it, but there’s plenty around—like me!

Senior Medicare Patrol volunteers outreach in their communities by presenting to groups, hosting exhibits at community events, and answering calls to the SMP help line. SMP volunteers also help Medicare and Medi-Cal beneficiaries who are unable to address fraud by themselves, and if necessary, SMP will refer beneficiaries to Medicare law enforcement if fraud is suspect. THE CLIENT Originally from Costa Mesa, California, Mitch Bancroft grew up with the calling to teach. His mother was an English teacher, and the passion she represented for her career was understandably contagious. It also helped that he was a natural storyteller and engaged any opportunity to speak with others. Mitch decided to follow the same path as his mother and moved to Chico in 2012, after finishing high school, to pursue a degree in education at Chico State. During his time at CSUC, he fell in love with history and chose it to be the subject he would later teach. Mitchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great-grandmother had passed away shortly before his move to Chico, leaving a huge estate in New Jersey to be divided up by the surviving members of the 40

family. He and his brother Matt were left with the liquid assets, which they decided to convert into land assets, by buying a home in Chico. They searched the market and found a quaint home for sale just 9 short blocks from campus. Built in 1905, the home had seen little care over the prior few decades and had fallen into disrepair. They decided the price was right and the home would serve as the perfect project for the two to tackle together.

It needed work for sure, but Mitch and Matt decided they would wait until they were in a better place financially to make the changes.

The home had three bedrooms with one bathroom downstairs and another bedroom with one more bathroom upstairs. The galley style bathroom was old, but the kitchen was the area most in need of help. Poorly designed, it made access to the dining room nearly impossible, and the

previously sat on the edge of the door frame and centered it between two base cabinets to add even more storage to the kitchen and extra space to prepare food next to the stove. The kitchen was finished on Friday morning, with the entire project taking just four short days to complete. When asked about his experience working with the installation team at New Again, Mitch beamed, “They were really good. I would leave the house and they would just continue working there without me. I have 3 dogs and 3 roommates; there wasn’t a single issue while they were here, and not a complaint from anyone. When they finished, they picked up their tools, cleaned the area, and left. Aside from the kitchen itself being changed, you would never know they had been there.”

THE CALL Mitch visited one of the local big box stores and obtained a bid for the project. Being his first major renovation, he wasn’t sure what to expect, but thought the quote was a bit high. He also didn’t find himself overly impressed with what they had to offer. He decided to search online and found a listing for New Again Kitchen Remodeling in Chico. He called the showroom and spoke to the store manager, Ric Powers, about his project. Ric offered to stop by and get a feel for the space to give him a better idea of how they could right its wrongs.

Ric arrived at the house a few days later and discussed what Mitch was looking to accomplish. Having been accumulating food and kitchen appliances in bathroom cabinets due to lack of storage in the kitchen, it was clear that the home was in need of a major upgrade. Ric gave his advice on the space, measured the kitchen with Mitch, and drew up a sketch to help them decide on how to best rearrange things. As the kitchen wasn’t complex by any means, the project looked to be pretty

I’ve learned a few things along the way on how to approach living with pets and how to make sure my furniture pieces withstand the love a pet has to give. Here are some things to consider when making your home enjoyable for the humans and friendly for the fur-child.

Fur-Cautious Rugs RUG-PADS Always use a non-slip backing to make sure you fur-child can run safely without sliding or rearranging your room layout for you. This is especially important for elderly pets as slick surfaces or shifty rugs can be difficult for them to get up or walk on. WOOL Wool can be great for resisting stains and, a good one, can last a lifetime. Wool, however, can also shed and the weight makes them a little more difficult and less functional to clean. SYNTHETICS Certain synthetics, like poly-acrylic, can be easily cleaned by being sprayed down outside with the hose and hung-dry or spot-treated with a store-bought upholstery cleaner. JUTE & SISAL These natural fiber rugs are durable, stylish, and can withstand the heavy traffic of pets. They would be great near doors to help grab any messes from paws after being outside. 44

SYNTHETICS When it comes to upholstery your top fur-friendly choice would be a fabric made of synthetic fibers, especially high-performance rated fabrics. Synthetics such as Crypton, polyester, nylon, or acrylic are great for pets because they are easy to clean, durable, and sometimes even stain-resistant. TIGHT WEAVES If you find yourself more attracted to nubby fabrics with a heavy texture, look for the tightest weave possible. Fur can easily get stuck into every nook and cranny of loosely woven fabrics and claws can easily snag at one loose strand making tweed or tweedlike fabrics much less pet friendly. VELVETS AND CHENILLE If your pet sheds heavily, another ones to stray away from would be velvets or chenille. Pet fur can cling like a magnet to these fabrics, making it more difficult to brush off quickly.

Tail Friendly Décor The happy tail wag can be anything but happy when it makes contact with either you or a decoration. For things that are at paws reach, try to use heavier weighted items like heavy ceramic pots or vases that can withstand the whip of a tail. Use a tray on your coffee table or ottoman that has edges or a lip to help protect glasses or décor from getting knocked over. Even if there is a spill, the tray will help contain the mess.

Revitalizing Chico PA RT T WO

We last met with Dave McDonald and Jason French at the tail end of April, while they were getting ready to put their recently drawn up building plans into action. The subject of their plans, a 1930s bungalow on W. 16th street, once sat as permanent housing for employees of the iconic Diamond Matchstick Factory in Chico, and had since fallen into considerable disrepair. With nothing but a complete overhaul necessary to bring the building to present day desirability, the two certainly had their work cut out for them, as the home didn’t even have a foundation. Just shy of one month into the project, they have already made significant progress. As someone who recently departed life within a perpetual construction zone between two homes over 5 years, I’ve learned many things.

Perhaps the most important of these lessons was to let those who know construction handle construction. While projects may seem small, they often tend to snowball, and for those who don’t know how to manage an impending avalanche, the end result can be a bitter defeat. Seeing the progress that two contractors have made in their spare time, on a building requiring total renovation, is a testament to that realization. During the past 28 days, Dave and Jason have managed to gut completely the structure, pour a slab foundation underneath it, and frame the entire floor plan. What once was a dirt floor now resembles the sort of modern buildings we are used to seeing. By the time this issue hits the stands, Dave and Jason’s plumber, electrician, and HVAC

(heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) specialist will have already completed their parts in the home’s new construction, and each has a unique role to play in the home’s energy conservation goals. For starters, their plumber will install a tankless, on-demand water heater, along with PEX plumbing—an alternative to metal piping that conserves energy, provides a near silent water transfer to fixtures, and offers a solderless design that eliminates the health hazards of using leadbased solder. Their electrician will prewire the home for solar and install LED lighting throughout the home, while their HVAC specialist will install a low energy heating and cooling system. Finally, Low-E Windows will be installed to further reduce the home’s energy waste. Once the aforementioned projects are completed, the home will be ready for drywall, fixture installation, and lastly, finish work. The two still expect to have the home finished by the end of July, just in time for its grand reveal in the August edition of Upgraded Living, an issue we’re seriously looking forward to. Hydration Station With the summer heat wave right around the corner, it is important to keep your furryfriends well hydrated. For this month's DIY, I visited the Rustic Nest in downtown Chico and found the perfect aluminum pieces to create this outdoor hydration station for my fur-babies.

When walking around the Rustic Nest, you may be overwhelmed by the vast amount of creative trinkets filling the store. When I saw this aluminum planter, I knew it would be the perfect base for my DIY water bowl. Shortly after finding the planter, I stumbled upon a bowl of aluminum letters which were the perfect hint of personalization I wanted my project to have. Before beginning the project, clean your planter and made sure that there aren’t any holes that water could leak through and that it is rust free. If you do have holes in your planter, you’ll need to fill them with a

waterproof sealant which will allow the bowl to hold water. Follow the steps on the sealant, let dry, and set aside. Next, take each letter and paint them with the color of your choice. Once painted, set aside and let dry. When the letters are completely dry, glue them to your base and allow them to adhere overnight. Last, fill the bowl with water and voila, you have the perfect new outdoor addition for your best friend!

Drops of dew sparkle in this mid-afternoon light and the Whispering Pines live up to their name as wind blows through the property. Ariza Farm in Orland, CA contains multitudes; living things just thrive here. But it hasn’t always been like this. Owner Deborah Ariza says, “I bought the farm in June of 1979. Back then it was just old almond trees. Everything you see right now was not here when we got here.” What I observed today are sections of different shades of green for acres, 10.67 to be exact. Kiwis are growing on vines towards the back of the property, propped up on a level all their own. In front of those are a variety of citrus trees—kumquats, Meyer lemons, mandarins, nectarines, and grapefruit. Surrounding the citrus are guava, persimmons, peaches, and plums. All healthy and strong plants, yielding delicious fruit. “This is unique. Normally, the focus for a farm in this area is either cows or almonds or massive groves of oranges. This is a bunch of things, which makes it a challenge, but also special,” says Mike Ariza. They have set up the property so that when one crop is out of season, another becomes in season. Purposeful growing is key around here. Ariza Farm sells their produce not just at farmers markets, but also to a variety of school districts. Students in Thermalito, Orland and Hamilton City receive farm fresh produce in their snacks and lunches throughout the week. 48

Mike adds, “It’s really neat going to the schools to drop off produce. Seeing the kids eating and enjoying our food is the best! All of the schools we work with have great attitudes about what they’re providing for the students and we’re helping them do that. It’s fun!” But how does a person first become interested in growing beautiful food? For Deborah, it all started with residential gardening. Her mom had a green thumb and she was always attracted to the idea of doing the same. However, it wasn’t until a neighbor started a kiwi nursery in Chico that Deborah found her calling. By May of 1972, she had worked her way up to nursery supervisor. It was all green lights and plants from there! She and her former husband discovered the property for Ariza Farm in 1979. “I love being my own boss. Deciding what you want to grow and where you want to grow it, is pretty cool,” she says. Speaking of cool, Deborah finishes our interview with dialogue about a recent unique happening at the farm. Her and Mike had been returning from a long day selling at the market when suddenly they heard a bunch of noise in the orchards. They looked around and saw not one, but two picturesque bald eagles flying around the row of Whispering Pines. Farmers Market Shepherd's Pie INGREDIENTS: • 1 lb Ground Wookey Ranch Ground Lamb • 4 Portabella Mushrooms from Mushroom Adventures (destemmed and cleaned) • ½ Sweet Onion diced • 1 Pyramid Farms Sweet Carrot (small dice) • 8 oz Bone Broth (Mine was made with Divide Ranch Beef Bones) • 3 Sprigs of Rosemary finely chopped • 3 CSA Grub Potatoes (Peeled) • 2 Tbsp Mama Sattva Ghee • ¼ cup coconut cream • 1 tsp arrowroot powder • Salt & Pepper

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 375.Boil Potatoes until cooked. Strain and mash with 1 Tbsp ghee and coconut milk. Set Aside. Brown ground lamb in 1 Tbsp of ghee. Season with salt and pepper and ¾ of the rosemary. Once cooked, strain to remove excess fat. Use 1 tbsp of strained fat to sauté the onions and carrots. Cook until lightly brown. Remove onions and carrots. Add beef bone broth to the pan and scrape up all the brown bits. Then add the arrow root powder and whisk until all is combined. Return the meat and onions and carrots to the pan and season. Fill each portabella with the lamb mix. Top with the mashed potatoes, covering most of the meat. Bake in the oven for 15–20 minutes. Once removed, add additional rosemary on top and serve!

Plants That Keep The

BUGS AWAY! Don’t get me wrong, I love insects and pollinators but I prefer not to get eaten alive while outside enjoying my garden. Here is a list that may help you deter pests if you feel the same as I do.

Lavender: This is my personal favorite. The beautifully fragrant foliage not only deters mosquitoes, but fleas and flies as well! Place bundles of cut lavender around your home or outdoor patio area wherever you want to deter pests. Tip: Rubbing your fingers on the scented foliage and then rubbing these oils on your skin can prevent bug bites. Rosemary: This is the perfect easy care plant to keep mosquitoes, gnats and flies away while attracting beneficial pollinators to your garden. Rosemary does well in the ground or in containers, just give it a sunny spot and it will thrive. Marigolds: They have a distinct smell and contain Pyrethrum which is an ingredient in most insect repellents. Marigolds are a must have for any veggie garden, they help by keeping garden pests away while still attracting beneficial ones. They also provide cheerful blooms spring through fall. Mint: Most pests don’t like the smell or taste of this plant, but I sure do! Add it to a drink

or dish for a refreshing flavor. Brush against the foliage and get a relaxing aromatic burst to your senses while repelling many pests. Tip: Be sure to plant this particular plant in a container, it can be invasive when sown directly in the ground. Lemongrass: Citronella is a natural oil found in the fragrant lemongrass that helps repel mosquitoes. This grass is considered an annual in our area but is a quick grower, reaching about 3 ft in one season. Be sure to strategically place these plants in and around your garden, near doorways, and patios—areas you spend most of your time. These plants help most when you release their natural chemicals and fragrance. Run your hands along the foliage often to release those aromas. One of the best things you can do to keep the mosquito population down in your area is making sure there is no standing water in your garden. It doesn’t take much for mosquito larvae to morph into full-fledged insects. You may also think about adding a bird or bat house to your garden. They are the natural predators to mosquitoes and other insects. These plants alone won’t take care of all your pest problems, but they can help.

GARLIC One of my favorite aromas emanating from the kitchen is garlic sautéing in olive oil. That strong, spicy smell wafting throughout the house makes me salivate hungrily for dinner, or whatever meal is being prepared. Garlic adds such delicious flavor to a meal and in my opinion can, and should be used, in almost any recipe. Garlic is a well-known essential ingredient in Italian cooking but is used around the world in all different cultural dishes and has been revered by ancient cultures. Not only does it add depth and flavor to meals, it stimulates the digestive and immune systems and helps keep your body healthy. Consuming one clove of garlic can help you overcome a cold faster and get you on the road to recovery sooner. I am excited to say that it’s just about time for garlic season here in Northern California! Garlic belongs to the allium family, which includes vegetables like onions, leeks, and chives. There are many different kinds of garlic within the categories of softneck and hardneck. Each variety has a unique shape, color, and flavor and needs a specific climate for its ideal growing conditions. The different types can consist of lots of tiny cloves or just a few large ones. Some are white, red, or deep purple. A few hardneck varieties include Creole, Rocambole, Porcelain, and Purple Stripe. Chefs may prefer to use the latter two varieties in

cooking for their strong, robust flavors. Softneck varieties include Artichoke and Silver Skin and not only have a nice, bold flavor, but store well over the course of a whole year and can be made into decorative garlic braids. Most farmers will harvest their fall planted garlic during either spring or early summer. Although you can find freshly harvested garlic at your local farmers market, most garlic has an incredible shelf life once dried and cured, making it available just about year-round. Garlic is the flavor king of the kitchen and I never fail to include it in a meal at least once a day. You can chop the cloves and sauté them in olive oil until light golden in color, mince them finely, or roast them in the oven. Whatever method you employ, be sure not to burn the garlic, which will bring out a very bitter, unpleasant flavor. It is also important not to add too much garlic to a dish as it can overpower the flavors of the other ingredients. One trick I like to use is to add garlic towards the end of cooking so that the garlic doesn’t burn and the dish has a delicious, light garlic flavoring. You can add garlic to dishes like polenta, roasted chicken or salmon, or mix it in with roasted veggies like brussels sprouts, onions, asparagus, bell peppers, and squash. It also makes a great topping on pizza and is essential to the beloved, all-time favorite summer pesto recipe. Garlic adds a wonderful flavor to almost any dish, so why not include it in your dinner tonight?

SEPARATE When your dog looks at you with those convincing puppy dog eyes it can be hard to resist sneaking them a little bit off your plate under the table. But beware! A variety of foods that humans eat are toxic to pets. CHOCOLATE AND CAFFEINE Both of these products contain chemical substances called methylxanthines, which are found in cacao seeds, the fruit of the plant used to make coffee. When eaten by pets, methylxanthines can cause vomiting and diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death. Note that darker chocolate is even more toxic than milk chocolate. Keep your chocolate stash off the floor and out of harm's way. GRAPES AND RAISINS Studies are still being made to find out what exactly makes grapes and raisins so dangerous to dogs. Ingesting these fruits can cause kidney failure and until more information is know, it is best to avoid feeding either to your furry friend.

MACADAMIA NUTS Macadamia nuts can cause weakness, depression, vomiting, tremors and hyperthermia in dogs. Signs of illness usually appear within 12 hours of ingestion and can last approximately 12 to 48 hours. No sharing nuts! MILK AND DAIRY Think of a pet as your lactose-free best friend. Because pets do not possess significant amounts of lactase (the enzyme that breaks down lactose in milk), milk and other dairy-based products cause them diarrhea or other digestive upset. Yes, even “doggy scoops and puppuccinos” count! ONIONS, GARLIC, & CHIVES These vegetables and herbs can cause gastrointestinal irritation to your pet, as well as red blood cell damage. Although cats are more susceptible, dogs are also at risk if a large enough amount is consumed. Toxicity is normally diagnosed through history, clinical signs and microscopic confirmation of Heinz bodies. RAW/UNDERCOOKED MEAT, EGGS, & BONES Just as with humans, raw meat and eggs that contain bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli are harmful to pets. Feeding your pet raw bones may seem like a natural and healthy option that might occur if your pet was foraging in the wild. However, this can be very dangerous for a domestic pet, who might choke on small bones or splinters. Stick with bones formulated specially for dogs. Tempting as it might be to share your meal with man’s best friend, it’s best to keep human and pet food separate. That way, there’s no risk of potentially harming your own or someone else's beloved companion! 55

It goes without saying that Americans love their pets. Approximately 68% of American households own at least one pet, and we spend over $60 billion dollars a year on food, supplies, grooming, boarding, and medical care. Clearly, companion animals have become an integral part of daily life, but what humans get in return is beyond measure. Whether to adopt or buy a pet should be an easy decision. Most importantly, adopting an animal from a reputable animal shelter is humane and ethical, because it saves lives— and not just one life. If you adopt instead of shop for a pet, you actually are saving more. Adopting a shelter animal allows more space for other animals that someone will adopt, causing a chain reaction of compassion. Imagine the good you are doing for someone by giving them a chance to give a home to a homeless animal. Being an unknown savior to many homeless animals is an amazing thing. By adopting an animal, you are helping break the cycle of pet overpopulation. Each year 8 to 12 million dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens throughout the country are euthanized because there are not enough homes for them. Animal shelters improve the community by mandating that adopted animals be spayed or neutered. This requirement decreases chances that more

unwanted animals will enter the world and helps weaken this vicious overpopulation cycle. Not to mention, you are taking in an animal that has received quality care and love: all adopted animals are vaccinated, behavior tested and have any medical issues addressed. Shelter adoption also helps put a stop to puppy and kitten mills. Throughout the country, and even across the USMexico border, thousands of commercial facilities and backyard breeders produce millions of animals for sale in pet stores and newspaper ads. These facilities repeatedly breed animals that spend their entire lives in cages without human companionship, and are destroyed after they become unprofitable assets. Adopting from a shelter that upholds ethical and humane standards means you don’t support such cruel practices. Lastly, adopting a shelter pet is good for your health! Not only do animals give you unconditional love, but they have been shown to be psychologically, emotionally and physically beneficial to their companions. Caring for a pet can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment and decrease feelings of loneliness. And when you adopt, you can also feel proud about helping a homeless animal in need!

My dad is an excellent role model for the importance of physical fitness and staying active. He has always encouraged and supported me, particularly in athletic pursuits. Here we are together completing our 10th year riding in the Wildflower Century 100 mile bicycle ride in Chico. Egland’s artistic inclination became apparent at an early age when she began painting on every surface she could find, including tables and walls. In high school, Egland dreamed of becoming a professional painter, taking several art classes to hone her natural talent. “I was going to be the next Thomas Kinkade,” she says, laughing. “Then I got into the real world.” Although she waitressed for twentysix years, Egland never stopped painting, taking every opportunity to become better at her craft. “You can learn anywhere and everywhere,” she says. “Everything is school when it comes to artwork because there's always something to learn.”

Sue Egland & Her Eye-catching Window Art If the sight of a window painting in Chico has ever stopped you in your tracks, there is a good chance the artist responsible is Sue Egland, a professional painter who has become known throughout the North Valley for her eye-catching window art. “I thought, I can paint on canvas. Why not paint on windows?” Egland recalls thinking over thirty years ago. “And so that’s what I did. And it ended up being, well—that’s all I do now is artwork.” Since transitioning from waitressing to painting full-time, Egland has gained a loyal customer base thanks to her friendly manner, creativity, and consistently high quality of work. She begins each window painting by finding out what message and mood her customer wants to convey. Next, she creates a sketch. For more complex designs, she transfers the sketch onto the window in 58

Whether she is painting windows, canvases, murals, her home, or even her own car, Egland brings her love of color, nature and spontaneity to everything her brush touches. Influenced by the styles of western artists like Thomas Kinkade and Bev Doolittle, she tends to favor natural subjects, including her favorite—horses. Scrolling through her portfolio on her tablet, she points out examples of the wide range of paintings she has done, from studies of horses and commissioned portraits of beloved pets to a faux brick trim around her house and an office mural depicting Mt. Shasta on a wall measuring 8x25 feet. Proudly, Egland shows off a photo of her car, which she painted on a whim two years ago. The car sports a playful splash of color beneath Egland’s logo and a full spectrum rainbow painted on the ladders mounted on the top. “After I painted that, I'd be driving along, and I'd get people giving me the high five,” Egland says. “Everybody liked it.” A prolific artist, Egland spends every spare moment painting. “I love it,” she says. “I can get lost in a painting.” Between her fun windows, scenic canvases and expansive murals, she makes Chico more visually interesting and beautiful, one painting at a time. water-soluble chalk. Otherwise, she paints free-hand, using acrylic and latex paints to bring her vision into reality. The result is always stunning. With elegant hand-lettering, original cartoons and natural imagery rendered in vibrant colors, Egland’s window designs demonstrate her signature style and impressive ability.

AW: What inspires you? MC: I feel inspiration when I see certain pieces of art. Sometimes I’ll look at photography or paintings and draw inspiration from that. And definitely riding my horse! I’ll have a really good day and try to recreate the light and feeling I had while riding. AW: Where do you paint? Do you listen to music or have any routine before/after you work? MC: I like to paint at home. I have a studio at my house and it’s really relaxing to put on music or a podcast. I try to keep the room really bright. I have special lighting to get different angles and keep it interesting. My dog and cat will sit with me and we work through it together. It’s nice to be alone. I find that I can collect myself when I’m alone and draw energy out of that creative space. Having my own stuff around and no distractions to worry about makes it easier. AW: When people come to you wanting a particular piece of work, how does that process look?

MC: So, if it’s a subject matter that I can relate to and inspires me, I work from a well lit photo at the right angle. Often times, I take the photo for the person. I can also work from an existing photo.

In the seven years I have known Michelle Camy, we have worked together on countless articles for this magazine. Her photography brings to life our words on the page and when I first found out she was also an artist, my first thought was, “How can one person have so much talent?!” Michelle has been painting and drawing since she was a small girl. With that many years of experience, we had to go behind the drips of acrylic color and learn more.

AW: What first got you interested in painting?

AW: How has your style or technique developed over the years? MC: Later, I got really into acrylic paint and interior latex house paint. I absolutely love the texture of it. I enjoy using interesting colors to paint ordinary objects; such as artichokes, saddles, lemons or horses, of course. I like the paint more than the graphite now. To this day, I still use that first concept of shadows and contrast. My main job is photography, so a way to incorporate that into fine art is to turn it into a screenprint. Limey Tees helped me create the screens in March and it’s been exciting to prepare for a new body of work. 60

MC: I can’t really say what got me interested in it...I just always did it. The first memory I can truly recall is wanting to draw all day. I would staple printer paper together and create little books, and sell those first drawings to my family members. I remember really loving pencil sketches. My favorite artist when I was in kindergarten was Wesley Dennis. His art was pencil drawings of horses. I thought, “I want to draw like that!” I would also work with pastels and watercolors, but my favorite was just graphite pencil. That helped me learn how to shade and create light and dark. It helped me better understand contrast and how you can make an image pop off the page. Also, my great uncle was a commercial artist in San Francisco in the 1940’s and 50’s. We had his art all over our house and I was really inspired by his painting style.

Dear Dad, I find it a bit incredulous that you have been gone for 28 years now. Hard to believe that 28 years ago I stood in front of a packed St. John the Baptist’s church to deliver your eulogy. I could deliver it today, verbatim. I began by stating that you were the most intelligent man I ever knew. That fact has not changed. So many other changes have taken place. In those changes, I have noticed some remarkable parallels between you and me. First and foremost, we are both undeniably in love with our lifelong brides. Renee and I are celebrating our 43rd anniversary this month. We are also both word guys. The kind you do not want to sit and play a game of Scrabble with word guys. We also now share the fact that we both have the privilege of sharing our views about Chico publicly. Even as a young boy, I enjoyed reading your column Dotted Shorts in the then widely published Rotary whatever-it-was-called at the time. Your Herb Caen-esque column in the form of three dot journalism proved remarkable. Your fellow Rotarians both hoped for and cringed at the thought of being included between any pair of those ellipsis points. I can still see those funny white boxer shorts with, of course, those red dots at the top of your column. My current stuff seems to pale a little bit in comparison. I do, however, want to talk to you about our ongoing conversations about this city we, indeed, both care so much about. I want to share just how right you were.

I remember the first time you told me that the freeway that forced its way right through Chico, including lower park, should have been rerouted to the west by use of Highway 32, allowing for close access to downtown Chico and the university. It would then reconnect with Highway 99 as it does today. At the time, you shared that the railroad proved the biggest hurdle and very well may have been the deal breaker. You were absolutely correct about the on ramps being too short and the inability to expand to three lanes a detriment. By no means am I comparing it to the 405, but we do have “traffic” each and every morning and every evening. Your thoughts about the Mall on Cohasset and East were also true. In light of that, I have to admit I was a bit skeptical when you shared that notion that from the freeway to Bruce Road and the Skyway to 20th Street would be an entire city in itself. You told me that the people living there would find it rare to go to downtown Chico. Known then as the New World, I just could not see it happening. Well, Meriam Park appears to be the project to, once again, prove you right. I miss those the summers “working” for you in the Salem office. I remember spending most days cutting out Chico ER articles and pictures you had marked, pasting them to typing paper and carefully filing them away. Though I did think this was a bit of an odd job, yes, pun intended, I would adore the opportunity to go through those boxes today. I so miss the fact that you have missed so much, like the marriage of both of my daughters, meeting my grandsons, and so many other things. I can, however, each Father’s Day, see you in Jim and Betty Roth’s backyard, Bloody Mary in hand, enjoying the U.S. Open. That is also one other thing we share. Cheers Dad.
