FROM THE PUBLISHER

I’m somewhat embarrassed to say that I’m not the best at following through on New Year’s resolutions. The fact is, I’m still trying to wrap my head around what a whirlwind 2015 was. With all of the craziness of the holidays, sometimes I barely have a chance to really reflect on the previous year until the next one is already upon me. 2015 was a big one. I became the editor of this magazine, I became a homeowner, and best of all, I became a mother. Although New Year’s is not the time to dwell on the past, we have to acknowledge where we’ve been, appreciate how far we’ve come, and decide where we want to go from here. This month we bring you our 5th annual New Year, New You makeovers. Our generous salons and clothiers have come together to provide four deserving individuals (and one dog!) with a fresh start and a boost of confidence. The transformations are truly inspiring - and by transformations I don’t just mean their show stopping new looks. It’s an amazing thing to see someone’s spirit lift right before your eyes. You can see their confidence skyrocket as they become glowing new versions of themselves both inside and out. Of all of the amazing things I have the opportunity to be a part of with Upgraded Living, these makeovers have always been one of the most rewarding. I can’t say thank you enough to everyone who helped make these transformations possible. The new year brings with it an exciting opportunity not only for change and reinvention, but also to reflect on the years behind us. Like I said, resolutions are generally not my most successful endeavors. More power to you if you can stick with them. So this time around, I’m resolving to not stress about how I’m going to “fix” myself this year (aside from weaning myself off of the holiday sweets). I’m entering 2016 with gratitude for all that I have, and excitement for all that lies ahead in the months to come. From all of us here at Upgraded Living, happy New Year and cheers to 2016!

If you were to open your suitcase after your last vacation, what would you find? Pants, phone charger, perfume, or maybe a passport. But would you find things that can’t be bought? Memories? Stories? Or how about something that could transform a whole town? Connor Schademan and Erica Trejo, juniors at Inspire in Chico, have opened their hearts and their suitcases to a town in Kenya. Their BioTech teacher informed the students about a competition from Pacific Gas & Electric Company called Solar Suitcases, the winners of which would get the opportunity to travel to Kenya. The students learned how to turn a suitcase into a portable source of solar energy. But the their passion and drive to help the world become a better place did not stop there. The class then created a project to submit to PG&E titled “Five Grey a Day” in which each student conserved five gallons of water each day. “The whole class worked together for this informative project for the drought,” Connor explains. Connor was in charge of directing and putting together the video to submit to PG&E. With the help of the class’s participation and Connor’s dedication, their project was acknowledged by PG&E as one of the schools who would participate in the trip to Kenya. Through an intensive interview process and an elaborate essay, Connor and Erica were chosen! Next, PG&E sent Connor’s and Erica’s class the kits for the

Solar Suitcases. Together as a class, they finished assembling four suitcases during two class periods. When Connor and Erica travel to Kenya, they will bring the four suitcases they assembled in Chico, and they expect to make more while they are there. “I hope to take it all in once I’m there and get the most out of the whole experience,” Connor says with a smile on his face. During their ten day trip, Connor and Erica will be doing community service in Kenya as well as public speaking. The suitcases they put together will be used to supply sustainable energy to orphanages and others in need. When I asked Connor what he hopes to take away from this experience, he laughed and said “everything!” with pure excitement. “I do hope to have new career options and just to experience different cultures after this experience.” To Connor and Erica, I hope that this trip is a life-changing adventure. Don’t forget that though you may have emptied out all the contents of your suitcase, the things that remain there forever are worth more than anything.

A Fresh Canvas

Artists from left to right: Bob Thomaston, Dee Boyd, Kelly McIntosh

The non-profit art co-op known as The Artists of Rivertown was the answer and outcome to Flint’s original debacle. When Flint first proposed the idea of the co-op, she hadn’t planned on opening a gallery along with it. It wasn’t until a combination of the group desire to have one and a good opportunity to get one arrived at the perfect time. The gallery began in a high school classroom working with the local art teacher to help artists in the area utilize the space to promote their work. From here their gallery has moved to different locations around Oroville including the State Theater, Myers Street and The Centennial Cultural Center. Since leaving their most recent gallery, Artists of Rivertown has continued to serve the Oroville community by integrating art with the various city events throughout the year. But without a set place for the artists to go, Flint and her management team 18

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM JANUARY 2016

One of their big upcoming events is the Kid’s Art Day in March. In this event, members of the Artists of Rivertown join forces to set up anywhere between 15 and 20 booths. Though art is the key theme, the booths are not limited to painting or drawing. It will be more of an artisan’s fair with crafting and other trades as well. This event is in cooperation with the Old Time Fiddlers Association. Another event Flint is excited for is Oroville’s Fiesta Days, where the co-op sets up a booth for kids to create Mother’s Day cards. Flint is also considering adding Father’s Day cards this year as it is right around the corner as well. A prime example of the talent drawn to the co-op is Diana Wyles, whose work has been seen in exhibitions around the country. She is one of the key members in management at Artists of Rivertown. As for the future of the organization, Flint’s vision has remained intact: give the artists of Oroville a group to express themselves collaboratively and spread art throughout the community. She also expects to see the art transform as the medium evolves and becomes more digital.

have had to be creative. Still committed to their meetings, they are still finding new ways to make their events bigger and continue to connect artists to the community.

It was a little over a decade ago when Freda Flint realized that the city of Oroville was missing something. It had its historic downtown area and plenty of great businesses and parks, but what it also needed was something for the artists in the area. A group in which they could collaborate, share ideas, and maybe even a place to do so.

YOUR 2016 FINANCIAL CHECKLIST: 4 EASY AND IMPORTANT RESOLUTIONS

BY RENEE MICHEL AND JOE SWEENEY, FINANCIAL ADVISORS WITH ASSET MANAGEMENT GROUP

Every year in January, millions of Americans make promises to themselves to somehow make their lives better. Diet and exercise is a popular resolution, as are many self-control/better person efforts. Gym memberships spike, as do self-improvement book sales. With this New Year in mind, we would like to offer a few ideas that can help improve the quality of your personal economy. √ Make a Budget. ● Only 39% of people have one, according to the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. ● Count your income, and normal expenses to see where you stand. ● Once you have a clear idea of where you money is going, you might be able to “trim the fat” in your spending habits. √ Start an Emergency Fund. ● Prepare for emergencies by setting aside 3-6 months’ worth of expenses. ● This money should be held in a liquid savings account so that in case an emergency arises, you won’t have to tap your funds for retirement or other goals.

√ Review and Attack Your Debt. ● Know the difference between what you can borrow and should borrow. ● Rules of thumb is to keep your housing costs (rental/mortgage) below 28% of your pre-tax income, and total debt payments (incl. credit cards, auto loans, student debt) under a 36% of your income. ● Pay down your highest interest debts first, and focus your large payments on one debt at a time until it’s gone.

√ Review your Investments. ● When was the last time you rebalanced your account? After 6 years of a bull stock market, many portfolios have become overweight to one or two asset classes. Now might be a good time to revisit your portfolio’s balance between future risks and opportunities.

Relief is in Reach!

By Kyleen Bromley

"Is this how life is supposed to be?" This question may prompt you to go to the chiropractor. You try herbal supplements and over the counter medications. You try acupuncture. Your doctor has ordered physical therapy and perhaps prescribed opioids or other medications. Nothing seems to adequately overcome the daily grind. Or worse, you have a narcotic dependence in addition to your unrelenting pain. Luckily, if you live in the Chico area, Dr. Lipman has dedicated his life to solving problems, and your pain is top of his list. Dr. Lipman studied engineering at the University of Vermont and actually intended to become a professional civil engineer. Finding solutions to complex problems was his greatest passion. Soon, his heart fell into the realm of helping people on a more personal level, and he decided to go to medical school to become an anesthesiologist. Dr. Lipman spent 10 years in Redding working with patients to relieve their acute and chronic pain before coming to Chico to open a full service interventional pain management practice. The practice, Interventional Pain Solutions, offers therapies that are far beyond my comprehension, but upon visiting the office for one day, I witnessed patients walking out with joy and relief. Years of pain reduced by over half. Interventional Pain Solutions provides so many types of pain management interventions which are too detailed to list here. But empathy, care, and personal compassion are a high priority and are therapeutic by themselves. This is a place of relief for those who have been suffering far longer than they should have. Dr. Lipman and his team of professionals take the time to look at the whole patient in considering treatment options. From a variety of procedures to psychological counseling to specialized physical therapy, he addresses all aspects of their well-being. Up until recently, there has been a dearth of full service pain management practices in this area. In the recent past, patients would have been triaged directly to a neurosurgeon for evaluation and workup of pain which may or may not lead to surgery. But now with this office open, a visit to the pain management specialist should not be a last resort, but rather an early solution to helping patients find relief from chronic pain. 20

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM JANUARY 2016

Dr. Lipman’s first priority is to create a better quality of life for his patients. For him, this job is not just helping to fix pain issues, but providing hope as well. And when you are in pain and feel like there is no solution, hope is a godsend.

INTERVENTIONAL PAIN SOLUTIONS IS LOCATED AT 647 W EAST AVE IN CHICO AND 2160 COURT STREET IN REDDING. TO LEARN MORE ABOUT DR. LIPMAN OR TO SCHEDULE A CONSULTATION, CALL 530-343-4757.

Imagine a time when it hurt to get out of bed, or to walk, or to even keep your head up. It is very mentally draining when you constantly hurt in some way. Unfortunately, odds are you know just what I'm talking about. Chronic pain has a prevalence of over 40 percent.

Dr. Lipman offers solutions that help patients live happier, healthier, and more normal lives. The options are cutting-edge: regenerative injections, platelet-rich plasma and stem cell injections. He offers anesthetic infusions for intractable pain. He offers therapeutic sedation for all procedures. He offers options to help wean patients off of heavy medications by managing pain in a healthier way. This is what gives Dr. Lipman the most joy. When he can see the relief in his patient's' eyes, it serves as a reminder of why he loves what he does so much.

If you have ever lived with severe chronic pain, then it will be easy to describe what it means to have met Dr. Zachary Lipman. “Divine intervention” comes to mind.

Up the Down Staircase: Part Two We continue Dr. Penner’s three part series on testosterone and metabolic syndrome. Last month, we left you hanging with the question, “Why are all these young to middle aged men testing low for the ‘BIG T?’” The answer lies within basic facts involving the integrated workings of the body: 1. Every hormone affects every other hormone. 2. Your biggest hormone drivers are food and stress! So, let’s take an average guy who has a job, a wife, a car payment, a boss, rent — maybe a mortgage - and possibly some kids. He’s running as hard as he can and is having a hard time keeping up and keeping everyone happy, including himself. He’s stressed. He’s not especially inclined to cook (except BBQ) and tends to eat on the fly. He REALLY likes carbs — pizza, pasta, bread, and beer! They are his comfort foods. He deserves to sit down and turn on the TV at the end of a hard day and chill out with whatever he feels like eating and drinking for a minute, right? Well, over time (and not that much of it), this lifestyle pattern will catch up to our handsome, virile gentleman and his belly will start to expand. His inflammatory levels will rise, causing him joint pain, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. His libido will start to sag. WHY? Carbs and Stress. Let’s talk about food first. It’s the easiest to control. When you eat simple carbs, like grain products, fruit, and beer, you are giving your

HEALTH ADVICE 24

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM JANUARY 2016

VIA

body “code red” food. Sugars/carbs are such damaging substances in the body, that the body will always prioritize processing them over any other nutrients. When you eat a carb, your pancreas cranks out insulin, your sugar storage and transport hormone. Insulin puts as much sugar into the muscles and liver as possible (which isn’t very much). The rest of the sugar is turned into fat, which is preferentially stored in liver. Fact: Fatty Liver Disease is the number one disease in the world today. When your liver is full of fat, the body starts to store the fat around your mid-section. The liver has over 500 functions including hormone regulation. What do you suppose happens when this “grand central station” gets clogged with fat? Functional compromise, including poor hormone regulation. But that’s not all! When you eat sugars, your blood sugar goes up and down precipitously. This is why you feel tired after you eat. Something to make a note of here is that sugar and its hormonal cohort, insulin, are big inflammatory agents which drive nasty problems like joint pain, anxiety/depression, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol. Eating simple carbs and sugars is like burning a tire in your living room to stay warm in the winter. Stay tuned next month to learn about the role that stress plays in metabolic syndrome. Dr. Penner practices chiropractics and whole body medicine at Chico Creek Wellness. For more information or to schedule a consultation, visit www.chicocreekwellness.com or call 530-342-8464.

Mirror, Mirror by Dr. Vimali Paul When you look in the mirror, is it the face you expect to see? Are fine lines, dark spots, uneven texture and dehydration looking back at you? How can we address the skin issues we are seeing? Number one is to prioritize; that wrinkle between my brows, that dark spot on my cheek, that old acne scar. Consultations are always free at the Derm Bar Med-Spa, and we can help you to identify the problem areas and correct what’s bothering you. A little Botox for forehead and brow wrinkles, or a dermal filler for volume loss in cheeks or around the lips. We can plump and rejuvenate the collagen for smoother looking skin, or tighten and firm lax, saggy skin with radio-frequency waves. WOMEN’S HEALTH

A Midwife For Every Woman I am one of those fortunate people that can honestly say “I love my job!” As a former labor and delivery nurse, and now midwife, I knew that I would continue to love being a part of the delivery experience. What I didn’t realize was how much I would enjoy all of the other aspects of my role as a midwife. The average person tends to equate midwifery care with pregnancy, but did you know that midwives are trained to see women of all ages and during all stages of life? From teens to centenarians, midwives have received specialized training to address the needs of each population group. The educational track to become a certified midwife is varied. Certified nursemidwives (CNMs) are registered nurses with a graduate education in midwifery. The majority of midwives in the United States are CNMs. According to Fullerton, Sipe and Schuiling (2009), 4.8% of CNMs hold doctoral degrees, the highest proportion of all advanced practice nurses. Certified midwives (CMs) have a bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing field with a graduate-level degree in midwifery. Both CNMs and CMs are required to pass the national certification exam of the American Midwifery Certification Board. Certified Professional midwives (CPMs) attend either a formal educational program or apprenticeship training and take a national certification exam administered by the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM). All certified midwives, regardless of their entry to midwifery, focus on providing the highest quality of care while considering the unique needs and health care values of the women they serve.

HEALTH ADVICE

VIA

Midwifery care goes far beyond just maternity care. CNMs and CMs can provide general health care services, annual gynecologic exams, family planning services and menopause care. Additionally, these midwives can detect and treat sexually transmitted infections and other vaginal infections. Most women seeing midwives for the first time find that even the “routine annual exam” doesn’t seem so routine. Many women remark how personal their care is and how much education about their healthcare they receive during their visits. In an era of healthcare where many women may feel they are “just another number,” midwifery care brings the focus back to the individual and their unique needs. To learn more about how midwives are striving to fill the gaps in women’s healthcare, visit www.ourmomentoftruth Tanya Nolan is a Certified NurseMidwife currently practicing with Feather River Midwifery Services. She has office locations in Chico and Paradise and delivers at Feather River Hospital in Paradise. Tanya has a Master’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Cincinnati and plans on pursing her doctoral education in the near future. References: Fullerton, J., Sipe, T.A. , and Schuiling, K. New Year, New Style and a Fresh Perspective I am not afraid to admit that I am hopeless when it comes to New Year’s resolutions. Between career, school, family and staying healthy, there doesn’t seem to be much room left for change. But there is. We work at becoming better versions of ourselves every day, all year round, getting closer to the people we are supposed to become. I can definitely feel the enthusiasm for what 2016 has in store. If any of this sounds familiar, fashion is your best friend. It changes all the time, and repeats itself relentlessly. So, it’s safe to assume that it can do some of the aesthetic heavy lifting for us. On this fashion note, this year, let’s trust our sense of style to dictate what we should wear. Let’s get excited about unapologetically taking fashion risks! I know I am not alone in this. We all have those “other” clothes in our closets that we never wear because we are not ready and we are still waiting for that perfect time to do so. Well, this is that time. Let’s stay away from the failsafe looks, that everyday grab-and-go uniform (unless your occupation requires to do so). Fashion is a tool and the most userfriendly way to reinvent ourselves. And what better time to do so than the beginning of a whole new year?

I see this time as an opportunity to develop a personal fashion formula. We have been working on it while building impressive collections of beautiful shoes, impeccable suits, lovely dresses for that special instance that maybe, might, potentially come. When dressing for the occasion we create a special one. There is magic in choosing how we allow others to see us by the way we dress. If you think of your wardrobe as your work of art, after all it requires time, energy, resources and most importantly - your own artistic sense, the way you dress will become your own curated individual creative expression. While going through your closet keep in mind that 2016 is the year for metallics, monochrome looks and mixing prints. luminous metallics bring a cool air to any silhouette. Black and white monochrome looks are also brought back by a return to the classic trend of effortlessly chic. Mixing prints is also a scheme to consider when fashionably shaking things up consider stripes and floral prints in similar colors. If combining floral patterns reach for contrasting tones such as neutrals and brights. If it sounds like anything goes, that’s because it does. Enjoy it!

Farm Fresh: Bertagna Son Kissed Vineyards By Kyleen Bromley

As my car pulled into the driveway of Bertagna Son Kissed Vineyards, I was greeted by a young black lab named Angus and by greeted I mean the young pup laid peacefully in the middle of the road as I drove around him. Once out of the car he lifted his head as if to say hello and that was it. Angus’s peaceful and laidback demeanor was residual of his owner, Mr. Berton Bertagna, the owner of the vineyard.

began to talk about his life as an almond farmer and how his family has been doing this for four generations. He talked about his other vineyard, Long Creek and the other fantastic opportunities that farm has offered the community. You can buy meat, mandarins and almonds all while taking a glass of wine through the vineyard on a self-guided tour. But more than just the products, Berton has so much to offer.

Berton greeted me with a firm handshake and his wife, Carol, joined us as we sat under a large weeping willow tree laced with strings of patio lights. I imagined them lit at night on a warm summer’s day, wine in hand, children and dogs running happily around and patrons enjoying each other’s company. This vineyard felt like home.

It isn’t Berton’s success as a farmer that draws you to his products, it’s what it means to him and what he feels he can do for the community. His farms are not just about the almonds and the wines, but the experience he wants to share with anyone who comes to visit. Berton’s passion for agriculture education is palpable and you find yourself wanting to join his quest in creating a community of sharing and learning.

As we sat on the chilly bench on an overcast December afternoon, Berton

Berton and Carol invited me to join them at their new tasting room called Almendra Winery & Distillery, located in Durham. Upon pulling up, I think there was a surprise in my voice at what I was introduced to. It was an old local grocery store that was gutted out and revamped. That was Berton’s vision; to use everything local. In fact, the doors of the distillery are used from a large tree that fell on Dayton road in town. The floors, the tables, even the fantastic trimming along the floors was all made from trees that have fallen in town. Nothing goes to waste. Even old barrels for wine are used for the bar. Tractor seats for the stools at the tables adds a subtle touch of Berton’s life as a farmer. But aside from the breath-taking tasting room he created, Berton is pushing for so much more. He wants to really bring in the idea of giving back, bringing people together and educating the community 33

on what the agriculture means to this region. The farms, the vineyards and the tasting rooms are more than just places to go and get wine and local food, but it is a place to create an environment for learning and enjoyment on a personal level. Berton’s passion and giving nature provide a great atmosphere for anyone who meets him. Maybe it is the Italian in him, but he opens his farms like one would open their home and bring you to the table and ask you to join in their feast.

hope is that with the education they provide with each visit to their farms, others will join them to help create a “wine country” in a sense, where other wineries join them to make a place where people can come to the vineyards and learn about the region. All of this is in the hopes to share their love and passion with the community and for those who come to visit learn what it means to live here in Northern California and what the land has to offer.

There is a lot of pride the Bertagnas take in growing local, organic and sustainable foods. They do as much as they possibly can to reduce their carbon footprint and it is evident in everything they do. Their 34

Berton and Carol support their neighbors who sell wine and other farm foods and does all he can to support everyone. A very caring and sharing family, they both do all they can for the community. They do all they can to support their community with donations, gift certificates, meetings, and events.

The Paradise Depot Museum, located at 5570 Black Olive Dr, Paradise

At the turn of the Twentieth Century, Butte County was beginning to witness capitalism pull the population into a new era of industrial discovery. Towards the end of 1903, The Butte County Railroad reached Magalia and shortly afterwards, started shipping milled lumber along with livestock and produce on the rail line. The 33-mile rail line was leased from the Southern Pacific Railroad and ran from Chico through Paradise and Magalia, eventually arriving in the blossoming township of Stirling City. Four train depots were built along the tracks in accordance to standard Southern Pacific designs. Among these four, the smallest was the Paradise Depot built in 1903. The growth that took place around the depot would ultimately influence how the Town of Paradise came to be as we know it today. Documented under the name of Fred M. Clough, Diamond Match Company’s manager of Pacific Coast operations, which also had mills and lumber operations in Idaho, the building plans were included in a production deal presented to the Board Of Supervisors, claiming that along with the depot, an adjacent subdivision would also built. In 1905, the area began to expand so much the community applied for a new post office to serve the population, which was, at the time, less than 300 people. As the years went by, more buildings were erected, including a hotel, businesses, and additional homes, which were along Black Olive and Pearson Road (which is now the Skyway). The area was slowly beginning to resemble what is now Downtown Paradise. Communication made with the outside world was established with telegraph and telephone operators working within the train depot. All the folks in town would gather around the depot, bribing and befriending the operators on shift in hopes of exchanging information and gossip. This would quickly push The Paradise Depot to become a hub for economic and social development, serving land developers, fruit growers, visitors and commuters for the following decades. After World War I, the depot would host a Fruit Fair for people living in the area.

By Matthew Manfredi

The timber industry would undergo many economic ups and downs influenced by World War I and The Great Depression but, consequently, after World War II, the industry had skyrocketed. Several lumber mills began sprouting up all along the Butte County Railroad. People by the droves made the trek up the Skyway—all looking for work in the quickly developing agriculture and lumber trade. Due to the high shipping volume of produce and timber consistently entering and exiting Paradise on the 33-mile rail line, bonds were gained and the construction of The Paradise Irrigation District began shortly afterwards. If not for the Butte County Railroad and the significant geography of Little Butte Creek forming above Magalia and pouring into the Paradise Reservoir, Paradise would not even remotely resemble the town that exists today. The last lumber train went through Paradise in 1958, but Diamond Match still continued to haul logs to the mill in Red Bluff. In 1974, the last train passed through Paradise and in 1979, Southern Pacific removed the tracks, which were sold for scrap metal. A widely used walking and bike path now sits where the tracks once ran from Pentz Road to where Neal Road branches off of Skyway. It wouldn’t be until 2003 when the Town Of Paradise would initiate a plan to build the Paradise Community Park in the same area the train depot was once located. As a result, the reconstruction of depot using much of the existing material—studs and flooring—would be erected on its original site. The grand opening of the Paradise Depot Museum took place in July of 2007—a development The Gold Nugget Museum of Paradise had been working on for years. The museum features much of the same characteristics of the small train depot that was built almost a century before, one that would shape the history of a small community on a ridge in Northern California. The Paradise Depot Museum is located on the corner of Black Olive Street and Pearson Road and is open Saturdays and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Be sure to stop by and experience years of rich history Butte County at both The Gold Nugget and Paradise Train Depot Museum in Paradise.

New Again Kitchen Remodeling Presents

House Call

A BUNGALOW KITCHEN M

When it comes to home sweet home stories, there’s nothing we love more at Upgraded Living than the story of a first-time home buying couple renovating an old Chico home into the home of their dreams. Zane Zavala and Shaylyn Graham are that quintessential couple. Not only do they look perfect together but their taste in home decor matches perfectly as well. 42

Zane, an engineering contractor, and Shaylyn, employed at Enloe Hospital’s case management department, found their 1941 bungalow-style retro dream home in early 2015. Though the house was cute and cozy, just as a couple wanted, the kitchen was too much so. Walled off from the rest of the home, the kitchen stood alone with two small entrances and a high half

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM JANUARY 2016

wall that made it uncomfortably inaccessible from the living room. Knowing full well that the kitchen would need to be remodeled, the couple purchased the home in February 2015 and in the summer decided it was time to renovate.

The Call Having followed New Again Kitchen remodeling

in Upgraded Living, the two decided to reach out and explore their options. They visited the showroom and met Ric who introduced them to the wide array of possibilities available for their home. Though the two were impressed and excited with what Ric had to offer, they sought out two other bids from local contractors to make sure they were getting the best deal. After

meeting the other contractors and receiving their bids, the two found that New Again Kitchen Remodeling was nearly 60% less expensive and would take nearly half the time to complete the exact same job. Affordable and timely, they decided New Again was the right choice for the job.

The Client

MADE NEW, AGAIN

The Cure Ric met Zane and Shaylyn at their home off of Rio Lindo and was surprised to find that the two young homeowners knew exactly what they wanted in their new kitchen. An open concept floorplan with full access to the living room, the two decided to demolish the wall that kept the kitchen separated from the rest of the home and frame in the door to allow for more cabinetry. Ric recommended laying down a linen/kola gray bed-

rosian tile floor to complement the grey quartz counters. Set atop modern white shaker cabinets, the counters were tied into the rest of the kitchen with a bright white subway tile backsplash. The recommendations matched perfectly with Zane and Shaylyn’s vision for their kitchen. They signed off on the project in mid October and completed the renovation a short two weeks later, with most of the work finished within the

CONNECT

first week. Zane and Shaylyn handled the demolition while New Again took care of the lighting, flooring, countertops, cabinetry, backsplash, electrical, plumbing, and drywall. The newly designed kitchen offered considerably more options than the original floorplan. Where they once had cabinets only flanking the kitchen window, the newly framed in door allowed for use of an entire wall, providing just the right

amount of space for the white shaker cabinets they were looking for. When asked about Ric and their experience with New Again, the two have nothing but wonderful things to say. “He’s a nice, friendly guy and was very helpful,” said Shaylyn. Zane continued, “He gave us his advice and was easy to work with. He made time for us when we needed him!” When asked if they would recommend New Again Kitchen Remod-

eling to family and friends, they both responded with a resounding yes. With a beautiful kitchen just in time for the holidays, Zane and Shaylyn are set to enjoy the home the way they always wanted to. Like so many others before them, their home is yet another stunning example of a job well done by New Again Kitchen Remodeling. COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN BY DAN BOSCH

If the show Seinfeld were still around, they no-doubt would have had an episode or two dedicated to the over-analyzing or misinterpretation of text messages and emails. It has been said that a great deal of the communication that we do is completely non-verbal and has to do with facial expressions, eye contact, body language and the inflection of speech. Obviously all of these things are missing when we simply type a message and send it into cyberspace for someone on the other end to figure out. So while a sitcom could have a field-day with this subject on a humorous note, I believe that there are more serious considerations to make in this regard. The fact that there are so many different ways to communicate now can sometimes be flat-out challenging as we attempt to interpret emotions when they are sent as an email or a text message. Additionally, many times the messages are full of short-hand abbreviations, emoticons and are often even lacking any punctuation at all. It definitely creates the potential for miscommunication, which I would argue is never a good thing. I have witnessed the explosion of these secondary forms of communication within the real estate business and it seems to be happening quicker with each passing day. It is now not uncommon to have sellers request that all showings of their home be scheduled via text message instead of phone call. Buyers, who conduct 90% of their research online (for 44

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM JANUARY 2016

both property and financing information), are hesitant at best to meet face-to-face and will only text or email agents with questions or interest. Much of the transactional paperwork (of which there is an abundance) is all sent and received via electronic signature software and sometimes an entire transaction is completed from beginning to end without ever meeting with a client in-person. While all of this has definitely led to increased efficiency, it has also depersonalized the process in many regards. I cannot speak for others in the industry, but on a personal level our team discusses this topic fairly regularly. While we use the available technology to better serve our clients, we are also committed to maintaining the personal connection that is so vital to ensuring that clients have the experience that they deserve. With that being said, if you are looking to buy or sell a home in the near future, I would encourage you to decide at what level you desire personal communication from your Agent and share that information with them. It will help them to provide you with better service and no-doubt lead to greater success.

Before Starting off the transformation, Ashleigh gave Amber a European Facial using Dermalogica treatment products to revitalize and bring back luminosity to her skin. Then, Claudia did a graduated A-line cut with face framing layers that gave more movement, bringing life back to her over processed hair. For her color, Claudia mixed a warm chocolate brown that would add richness but wasn’t too dark. Amber wanted to keep her hair somewhat light so subtle buttery highlights were added throughout. At the shortest part of her cut, about 10 inches was taken off. For makeup, Danielle focused on evening out her skin tone with Sothy’s age defying and hydrating foundation. She then accentuated her amazing facial structure and cheekbones by contouring. Her eyes were kept simple by highlighting the lid and using a slightly winged black liner. Using 3D mascara, her already long and thick eyelashes were plumped up. Amber’s makeup was finished off with some highlighting and a natural sheer plum lip by Sothy’s. Her dress is from Elan and the leggings are by Dex. The overall vibe of her gorgeous jewelry was to mix metals and textures for a sophisticated festive feel, with tribal accents to make the look a little more edgy.

amber Nominated by: Brooke at the Esplanade House Amber Sims left home when she was fifteen and has been on her own ever since. Struggling with drug addiction, she lost the job supporting her at the time and became homeless. Alongside coping with rough times, she was also diagnosed with lymphoma in her right side and after three years in remission, the other side was hit too. Both lymph nodes gone and twenty one treatments later, Amber has been working on healing in health. Never imagining she would have children, Amber was given a gift in her daughter Zoey. Her main focus in going back to school and recovering from past addictions is so that her daughter can have a better childhood than she did. “I am learning to be a better mom,” Amber says. She wants to encourage everybody out there struggling to be strong. Utilizing resources like the Esplanade House and Women’s Resource Clinic have been major contributors to Amber’s new found well being. As many new moms can understand, it is difficult to find time to take care of yourself when there is a new baby. Amber is hoping this makeover can give her a fresh start. Although Zoey will always be Amber’s number one priority, we think it’s especially important to show that a new look can mean taking even more steps toward the new life she imagines for them.

“All I want for Christmas is long hair,” said Janae about her barely shoulder length locks. It had taken her three years to get her hair to that length, and there was no way she was going to part with it. Lucky for her, stylist Cortney was able to make her Christmas dream come true with some gorgeous beaded sew-in hair extensions, meant for those with finer hair. Cortney also gave Janae some dimensional highlights to enhance her natural color. For her makeup, Cortney wanted to give Janae a soft, warm look to bring out her natural features. She did some light contouring to add some definition to her face, and added a copper lip to give her a fuller pout. Cortney finished off the look with a nude eye and lots of mascara to make her eyes pop. The ladies at the Bungalow put together a fun, relaxed outfit for Janae, with a black slouchy cropped sweater and drawstring capris with a touch of lace. They also added a pair of classic black lace flats and some fun jewelry for a little extra bling.

janae Nominated by: Shelley at the jesus center A mother of three boys, Janae Casaurang found herself in an abusive relationship and began searching for a way out psychologically through the use of drugs and alcohol. Eventually the drug and alcohol abuse took their toll and Janae found herself homeless on the streets of Chico. She remained this way for twoand-one-half years before seeking help from the Jesus Center and Sabbath House. In June of 2015, Janae was placed in the Sabbath House and has been clean and sober since. She decided to seek help when she finally realized how far her health and life had dropped. She wasn’t who she wanted to be and, as a mother, wanted to change that to provide a positive example for her sons. Having had trust issues due to a strained relationship with her own mother, she worked diligently to put these issues aside and create close friendships with several women at the Sabbath House who were going through similar situations. She calls them her soul sisters and credits them with helping her learn to find herself again. Janae loves seeing lives change and watching the transformations that have come from the program. She is active in providing community service and works at the church on the Esplanade as a cleaner but is still searching for additional employment which, due to her scattered work history, has been difficult to find. She’s hoping someone will take a chance on her. We hope so too!

Kylie

The style Team Hair, Makeup & Clothing: the bungalow

Nominated by: Shelley at the jesus center Born in Chico, Kylie Sisneros bounced around California, Oregon, and Nevada, before heading back to her hometown in October, 2007 with the intent to party like it was 1999. Less than one week after moving back to Chico, she found out she was pregnant, and began preparing for the birth of her child, which she had in 2008. She began working for the county while taking care of her son, but due to her new job became ineligible for welfare. Though the new job was exactly what she needed, the salary disqualified her welfare status, and as a result, she was unable to pay for the meds that had helped keep her mental health balanced. She tried to tough it out, but eventually the lack of balance got the best of her. She lost her job and, with it, her ability to support herself and her son. In June of 2013, she left her son with his grandparents and took off for a concert in Oakland. She didn’t return for 14 months. Her son, eventually, was given to his godparents who took over his custody. During her 14 months, she traveled a drug and alcohol driven loop multiple times through the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Vegas. She woke up one day and had a moment of clarity; she messaged Shelly at the Jesus Center on Facebook, told her of the situation she was in, and that she wanted to return home. Kylie returned to Chico in September 2014, stayed at the Jesus Center for 10 months, and used it to get back on her feet. She began attending Butte College and started working on her accounting degree while at the shelter. 15 months since returning to Chico, Kylie just had her son returned to her and is one class away from receiving her accounting degree. She has completely turned her life around, is employed full-time by the moving service, Two Men and a Truck, and just bought herself a new car. She will remain at the House of Hope in Chico for the full two years allowed until she finds the balance she is looking for. According to Kylie, “You have to change your focus from the past to the future. Let go of what happened and do something every day to make your situation better, no matter how small it is.” We couldn’t imagine better or more poignant advice. Happy New Year and happy new YOU, Kylie; you’re an inspiration!

Kylie was ready to feel like a new woman with a dramatic change to her look, and stylist Veronica knew just what to do! For her hair, Veronica went with a dimensional ombre with balayage highlights. This technique allowed for a natural blend of the bold colors used. As for Kylie’s makeup, Veronica wanted to keep the attention on Kylie’s stunning eyes. She gave Kylie a nude, pouty lip and went for a bold, smoky eye to match the drama of her hair. To top off her transformation, the ladies of the Bungalow dressed Kylie in this unique black top with a relaxed fit and geometric detail. They paired the top with leggings and trendy black ankle booties. The look was perfected with the addition of gold leaf earrings and chic gold and turquoise necklace.

jesse Nominated by: Brooke at the Esplanade House From Challenge, CA Jesse Wike moved down to our area searching for work and a better life. After being employed at Gold Country Casino for seven years, he ran into some trouble with addiction and finances. Calling this time the worst years of his life, he also lost his house in 2009. Jesse’s main inspiration for getting back on track is his son, Trayton. They currently live together at the Esplanade House and Jesse plans to go back to school in January to pursue a career in welding. Faith has been a huge part of his journey in recovery along with getting involved in an Narcotics Anonymous Fellowship. Jesse hopes this makeover will boost his self esteem and give a fresh start to his new beginning.

Jesse started out with a clean new cut and style from Danny at Danny’s Barbershop. Danny gave him a classic gentleman’s cut with a pompadour style. Jesse wasn’t quite ready to part ways with his beard, so Reyna at Gearhead Barbershop cleaned up his existing facial hair and treated him to a relaxing hot towel, lather, and straight razor shave. Formal Education finished off Jesse’s cleaned up look with some fresh new duds from Ben Sherman, Rodd & Gunn, and Will Leather Goods. He’s ready to start the new year in style!

Declutter for

Written by Natalie Conrad, the Organizing Mentor

Visible clutter—This is the clutter we see day in and day out. It can be a kitchen counter piled with dishes, a table toppling with papers and receipts, or a bedroom with clothes and accessories becoming its own mountain. Invisible clutter—These are in those spaces that are concealed. The junk drawers that hold ambiguous items, the closet full of parts and pieces, and the attic — our time capsule of treasures. The last type of clutter is intangible, but ever present. Mind clutter—It’s all the information we try to manage in our heads. The schedules, the important deadlines, and to-do lists are just the tip of the mind clutter iceberg. Barbara Hemphill, past President of the National Association of Professional Organizers [NAPO] says “Clutter is postponed decisions.” In other words, this means that in order to deal with our clutter, we must make decisions. Although this sounds logical, it can be far from simple. Making decisions about our clutter can be difficult, emotional, and exhausting. In her recent book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Marie Kondo says when deciding whether to keep an item, we must ask ourselves “Does this item spark joy?” That is only one of many questions one needs to ask. Here are other questions to consider when tackling the clutter. 58

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM JANUARY 2016

◆ When was the last time I used/needed this? ◆ Does it add value to my life? ◆ Is there something I need to do with this? ◆ Do I have more than one of these? Do I need more than one? ◆ If I let go of this, can I get another one in the future? ◆ Does this belong to someone else? ◆ Does this need to be kept for taxes or legal purposes? And the best question: ◆ What’s the worst thing that would happen if I did not have this? When we take the time to ask and answer these questions we can finally begin to unclutter. Answer these questions honestly, based on what you think; not on what others think you should do. Making these decisions will begin to unclutter your life in 2016. Eliminating clutter is less about losing possessions; it’s about gaining more freedom. Owning clutter means you have to manage it, dust it, move it and maintain it. Those are the actions that can steal your energy and waste your money and your time. It’s a new year and a new start, let’s start 2016 right by uncluttering.

New year, new start. That’s how it feels in January each year. One of the things this brings to mind for many of us is getting organized. While getting organized is a good idea, just the thought can be overwhelming. What getting organized really means is that we have to deal with our clutter. There are three kinds of clutter; the first two are tangible:

new you!

New Year, Healthier YOU!

It all starts with a plan. In life, we create construction plans, financial plans, vacation plans, but how many of us create nutrition plans? This year we are going to create that next level of success for ourselves. Most people eat simply to satiate, without the intention to nourish their bodies. If we want to succeed, we need to eat with our goals in mind, or in other words, eat with purpose. For a successful plan, seek out a professional who is producing the consistent results that you are looking for. It is easy to get caught up in the latest Internet trends or fads, but to know someone who is producing results outside of those fads is key. With that plan, choose a time frame with a firm start date and an end date for your goal. We are going to incorporate that nutrition plan into your daily lifestyle. This isn’t a diet, but the beginning of a healthy and active way of life. In our plan we will have many small, seemingly insignificant choices as part of our daily routine. These choices are going to either put us closer to our goal, or further from it. Willpower will only get you so far. Through this process we will find your why power. In life we are motivated by things we either want or don’t want. For example, we want to be healthy, have more energy, or even to fit into that old pair of jeans. Why do you want to be healthy? Why do you want to have more energy? We need to dig deep and find out why we want these things.

Your why will be something that will propel you through your plan, and seeing it though this year. For example, I recently had a client mention that her goal was to fatigue less easily and have more energy. After talking with her we came to the conclusion that her why would be to hike again, the way she used to before, and to keep up with her grandkids. This was her why, her reason for getting healthy, losing weight, and incorporating more activity in her life. Like hers, a powerful why will be something that wakes you up every morning, gets you out of bed, helps you make those healthy choices, every day for your goal. How we get there and how fast is up to you. Next, find an accountability partner. Someone who will keep you in check, encourage you, ask you about your progress, or possibly even do it with you. Tell everyone, declare it on social media, let people know what your goals are, when you plan to achieve them by, and that you are doing it no matter what. The more people you tell, the more likely you are to achieve your goal. In the past we have made some pretty bold resolutions, and jumped in headfirst only to be in the same place as we were last year. Let’s stop that trend now and make this our best New Year yet.

CONNECT

It’s 2016 and this is going to be your year. This is going to be the year you get fit. Take off those holiday pounds and decrease those inches that were added to your waist over the past holiday season. You’re geared up and ready to go, but unlike previous years, this time you will be successful with that recurring New Year’s resolution. Lets prepare with a plan, learn our why motivation, and create accountability.

PHOTOS BY ERIN WENHAM DONNA WITH FELLOW GUILD MEMBER, SUZANNE STEEL

Annie’s Star Quilt Guild

By Kyleen Bromley

It was easy to see why Annie’s Star Quilt Guild was so inspiring. As Donna took us around the store and through the magical world of colorful fabrics, she engaged us in stories of when she used to teach at Pleasant Valley high school. Donna taught Home Economics for 37 years, so it was easy to see how she could be so inspiring with her art. Fantastic pieces she shrugs off and with a genuine smile and soft touch to the shoulder, she repeats herself, “You can do this, too. You just need to be taught.” I blush at the idea of being capable of this kind of work. Beyond just the art, there is community and caring and individuals who have found a passion that they discovered they can share with others. The list of community services they provide goes far beyond just sewing. The members of Annie’s Star Quilt Guild sew pillowcases for children at Sutter Children’s Center going through cancer treatment, providing the children with a more “home-like” atmosphere in their 60

UPGRADEDLIVING.COM JANUARY 2016

hospital room. Along with the pillowcases, the members create special fabric dolls that the children can draw faces on, which the nurses use to show the children what the doctor will be doing in surgery. These dolls provide understanding and comfort. The pillowcases and dolls are just drops in the bucket to the community support Annie’s Star Quilt Guild provides. The guild creates at least 200 quilts for donations to various causes, such as firefighters and victims during disasters, Meals on Wheels, and so many more. The Guild even provides quilts to foster children who are “aging out” of the foster care program to provide comfort as they step out on their own and into adulthood. I ran my hand along one of the pillowcases that was going to one of the children at Sutter Children’s Center and I took in a deep breath, imagining the child whose head would rest on it. I looked at the dolls with little hospital gowns and the blankets being set up for the next donation and was wonderfully overwhelmed at the care and passion that goes into every one the the hand sewn items. Every piece of fabric they touch reaches someone on a very intimate level. As I walked back outside, enveloped by the noise of the street again, the peace and calmness I felt from Donna’s voice and that experience lingered for the rest of the day. I went home and put down on my calendar to come by on the first Thursday of the next month and kept hearing Donna’s voice in my head telling me, “You can do this, too.”

The chaos of the busy street fades to a comforting calm once I walk through the door of the classroom inside Cathy’s Sew and Vac, who was kind enough to lend us their space for our interview. I am met by Donna Greenwald, a kind, well-spoken woman with a firm handshake and kind eyes. Her voice is lyrical and soothing and she entranced me with her stories. But that wasn’t why I was there. I was there to embrace her other magic: her quilts. But not just Donna’s magic; the magic the women of Annie’s Star Quilt Guild. It is currently comprised of quilting lovers who gather together on the first Thursday of each month at the Masonic Family Center. After speaking with a member who joined one evening about 10 years ago, her face lit up and her grin expressed it all, “This has changed my life,” she said unfolding a quilt she was currently working on as we stood in the classroom. “I don’t know what I would be doing without it,” she said with a grateful sigh.

Paradise Symphony Orchestra

By Jake Hutchison

Though the holidays may have come to an end; for the Paradise Symphony Orchestra, it’s only the beginning of a new performance season. The award-winning symphony was born in 1958 when a still developing Paradise was in need of some new, classier entertainment. Recreation District Director Harvey Roth sent out the call for musicians and when eight answered, he formed his group. Since then they’ve grown to a full sized symphony and have earned quite a name for themselves.

The Soloists Dawn Harms is a prime example of a musician capable of integrating her art into various mediums. Along with being the Music Director and Conductor of the Bay Area Rainbow Symphony as well as the First Violinist of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, she also has spent time with Skywalker Sound, performing and recording music for movies and video games.

Their first big performance of the new year will be held at the Paradise Performing Arts Center on January 24. The charmingly named “Bach to Bach!” which will feature performances of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. The concert will also have guest soloists and Paradise Symphony Orchestra Alumni, Dawn Harms and Mia D’Augelli.

Her advocacy of music education has sent her around the world, spreading her message as she conducted the Amarillo Youth Orchestra.

The Conductor

It’s not uncommon for an orchestra’s conductor to hold a solid background in music, but Dr. Lloyd Roby has indeed proven himself worthy to lead the Paradise Symphony Orchestra. Roby has performed extensively with with over seven previous groups including: The Glenn Miller Orchestra, The Pittsburgh Cincinnati Orchestra, The Tommy Dorsey Band and The Sacramento Opera. Diversity has given him vantage points of view in terms of understanding his art.

They say one of the best ways to truly understand a trade is to teach it, another of Roby’s vast abilities. Since 1995, Roby has taught music at Chico State University. Before this he taught all over the country from elementary schools to college level courses, earning his fair share of accolades along the way.

Like Roby, Harms also found a passion in teaching music. She is currently a professor at Stanford University and teaches music performance courses. She has released two albums, “The Black Swan” and her more recent “The Hot Canary”. Her work can also be heard on the albums “Blood Money” and “Alice” by her cousin and fellow musician, Tom Waits. Paradise Symphony Orchestra will also be accompanied by Mia Bell D’Augelli, a violinist who currently is a member of the Town Quartet as well as Ensemble Mik Nawooj, a group that merges the styles of jazz, classical and hip-hop. In 2014, D’Augelli earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance from Mills College, learning from violinist Gloria Justen. Her work with various composers such as David Behrman, Brett Carson and Roscoe Mitchell (among many others) has shaped and expanded her musical talent as well as her own musical vision. She has also worked with various music groups such as Opera on Tap, Groupmuse and Classical Revolution. Her intriguing stage performance and ability of subtle improvisation is sure to bring excitement to the Paradise Symphony Orchestra’s January performance.

Don't miss it! "Bach to Bach" will be held on January 24th at the paradise performing arts center. For tickets and more
