FROM THE EDITOR Magazines do not publish themselves. That self-evident notion was lost on me until I spent the last two months looking from the inside out. Magazines come to life because of the talented people involved. My transition from retiree to my current role came with ease due to some very talented people involved each month with Upgraded Living. I want to do more than merely thank them. I wish to take the time to acknowledge them. Give you a glimpse of the inside. Nerissa, our designer, coordinator and resident catch-all is truly the heart of this process. I admire her patience dealing with an inept technology user such as myself. I also marvel at the breadth of her monthly input. Jason and Kerilynn are the pulse. Not only on the magazine’s lifeline but, more importantly, they have their thumbs on the pulse of this city. They bring back the stories that need to be told. We shine because they have their boots on the ground. Our writers, Emily, Emma, and Alyssa collectively add a world of grace to our pages. The photographers, Michelle, Frank, Emily, and Michael breathe life into our words. I thank them all for their work and their genuine acceptance of me coming on board. March reveals one of the more enticing transitions our calendar year has to offer. This month’s cover story reveals a deeply personal transition for my family. I had the privilege of writing this intimate introduction of a person I cannot wait for you to meet. Enjoy! March also has that way of taking all that winter so coldly locked down and allowing for that unlocking experience to begin. Our pages are filled with ideas and advice and places for you to get ready for Spring. In light of that, I am equally happy that you will also meet the people at Prestige Nursery. I hope we are all as successful in conveying the joy and energy that they display on a daily basis. Besides this place to shop, we run the gamut of all your yard needs. From a list of trendy plants to choose, to a complete guide to the beginning gardener, we have it all covered. You will also learn when to plant fruits and vegetables, their day to day needs and harvesting potential. Indeed this March issue makes for an enticing transition to get you outdoors and get dirty. Juxtaposition means side by side, for a purpose. The Back Page takes this approach appropriately titled Then and Now, Now and Then. These vignettes took this turn as I found myself in a memory that transported me right back to today. The next few months will offer a series of these triggered memories from roaming around on my bike in the late 50’s and early 60’s to walking those same paths today. I hope it is as fun to read as it has been to write. On to April and hopefully some of those welcomed showers.

Speaking up and speaking out is what Peyton Elliott is all about. As a member of the Oroville Teen Center, Peyton won the Boys & Girls Clubs of the North Valley “Gino Manfredi Youth of the Year” competition. Teens throughout Chico, Paradise and Oroville compete for this title by giving a speech about their life, their trials and ultimately their triumphs. From education to bullying, his speech shined through, making him a clear winner in the competitive competition. He will be competing in the Northern California Youth of the Year competition in March with the hopes of continuing on to the state, regional and then to the national level. When Peyton first joined the club his GPA was 1.2. Now, through hard work and perseverance he has a 3.89 and loves to help others through tutoring. Over the past few years, Peyton has also endured and thrived despite his educational, social and family issues. Shane Thomas, Oroville Teen Center Staff, said watching Peyton grow and overcome these obstacles has been rewarding. “I’ve seen him overcome many obstacles such as bullying, academic struggles, and issues at home,” said Shane. “Peyton also brings such an amazing amount of positive energy. His passion and dedication is truly inspiring.”

As for his role models, Peyton said all Boys & Girls Club staff, but in particular, Shane is his inspiration. Shane is a former two-time Youth of the Year winner, so he was a major help when Peyton was working on perfecting his speech. “I just really connected with Shane, and without him I don’t think I would have been as prepared as I am. He really helps everyone out.” Looking to the future, Peyton would like to move from his current position of Junior Staff to Staff member for the Boys & Girls Club, and be able to help give others the opportunities and help he was given. Anyone that has had an encounter with Peyton can attest to his caring spirit and perseverance. Oroville Teen Center Director Randal Turley said Peyton is the embodiment of the Oroville spirit. “Peyton represents what’s best about us all and carries that with him wherever he goes and inspires kids and staff alike to follow his example.” The inspiration to have speaking up and speaking out be what anyone is all about!

WRITTEN BY KEVIN DOLAN PHOTOS BY MICHELLE CAMY

The Accidental Chicoan I have been told that if you had the opportunity to spend an entire month in a city or region that you would actually become part of the culture, the mainstream and and even get into a certain rhythm. However, this would not give you official local status. So it begs the question, what about six months? That question is being answered by Layshia Clarendon, our local spotlight and resident in training. On November 11th, Layshia became my daughter-in-law when she married my youngest daughter, Jessica. That is when their story began. This story, our story, began the month before when the two of them moved in with my wife and me for, yes, a six month stint. Layshia has embraced this community with her inimitable eagerness and ease. To be certain, she does not possess the invisibility Ralph Ellison wrote about. It is more like the character, Dill, in Harper Lee’s prize winning novel. The mayor certainly is not going to hand the key to this city to her, but I believe that by the end of this writing, we certainly will grant her at least temporary citizenship. And, yes, there is more to this story. First, let’s meet the local Layshia.

You may have not noticed her standing in line at Upper Crust perusing the glass counters, waiting to place her order. You might have rubbed shoulders with her on a Saturday morning strolling up and down the rows of booths at the market. You could have just walked by her table at the Perk and not noticed her working behind her laptop screen. It is possible that you were shopping side by side with her on her daily treks to S&S, sometimes multiple treks in a single day. Perhaps you were actually in the same aisle in the Used Bookstore pouring over title after title. It is possible that she has stood back allowing you to pass by on a switchback up the climb to Monkey Face. If so, I am certain you noticed the 63 pound bulldog accompanying her. You may actually have been rooting on the same ‘Six and Under’ soccer team on a hot October Saturday at 20th Street. You then, after the match, may have been across from the same table as hers on the patio of Sierra Nevada. Layshia frequents a long list of our favorite hangouts and, chances are, you have been there when she has.

You obviously would not see her, bundled up with her hot tea, reading in the backyard, warming under the Fall sun. You have no way of knowing that she is a voracious reader and enjoys the works by Gabrielle Union, Glennon Doyle Melton, Angie Thomas, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Anne Lamott, and Brene Brown. Or that she eagerly recommends their titles—We’re Going To Need More Wine, Love Warrior, The Hate U Give, Between The World And Me, Help,Thanks,Wow, and Daring Greatly. You also could not have had the opportunity to catch her binging on shows like ‘This Is Us’ and ‘Grace and Frankie’. On a rare day off, she also will watch episode after episode of ‘Stranger Things’. Layshia is also obsessed with HGTV, especially Tiny House Nation and Fixer Upper. In fact, when she frequents all those places mentioned, she is often wearing her Magnolia T-shirt. On that note, you also are not aware that she loves being in my shop learning how to use the chop saw, cutting holes with the jig, discovering the correct grit for sanding needs, and the best materials to use when staining pine. She is also constantly sending me ideas from her Pinterest board with the same question each time—Can we make this?. Her next quest is to learn how to lay down the concrete bordered brick path from our back gate. As a result of all this, I have yet to recommend to her the book, How to Think Like Leonardo Da Vinci, and, quite frankly, I’m a bit frightened to do so. She can become a Renaissance person on her own and certainly she will. Admittedly, none of this will aide in recognizing Layahia as a local, but certainly does not hurt the cause.

Recently, you may not have noticed her at the Butte College men’s basketball games occupying the front row, cheering on her baby brother Terry, who is the starting point guard. Recently, her workouts at Whole Body Fitness have increased in intensity, bordering on arduous, even tortuous at times. The weights, plyometrics, cardio and posture exercises leave her sore and tired. If you are there working out when she is then you very well may have, at least, taken notice. These workouts also make her hungry, really hungry. When most of us are struggling to lose or maintain weight, her 8 meals a day ensures her weight to increase to the level of her workouts. Meal prep for Layshia is not a chore, rather it has turned into an art form. Though she may never really be dubbed a chef or even a sous chef, she nonetheless cooks. As an example, she does not just make a tuna sandwich. On the contrary, she follows recipes that go far beyond a mere swipe of mayonnaise and a slapped on sliced pickle from a jar. This approach follows all of her meals and, I must admit, has led me to indulge into various and crazy good courses I could never have seen myself engaging in before her move into our house. Most folks who are checking in at NS Fitness do not take notice of her workouts on the gym floor. They are tedious and repetitive and, if only those folks knew, quite entertaining. This includes taking the fundamentals of the shot to its simplest form by lifting the ball to the top of the backboard ten times in a row complete with the ball’s rotation stopping upon impact. This drill is repeated against

the wall by lifting the ball three quarters of the way up, again having the rotation stop each time the ball touches the wall. She then gets on her back on the gym floor and, with her elbow tucked into her side, shoots the ball straight up into the air. She must continue this until she gets that shot to return directly into her hands five times in a row. With the successful completion of those three warmups, the actual shooting session begins where she will, at game speed, take 200, 300 to 500 shots. You see, there is, indeed, another part of this story. You see, Layshia is a professional athlete. She came out of a high school in Southern California and accepted a full ride scholarship

to the University of California, Berkeley. She started all four years for the Golden Bears and led them to the Final Four in New Orleans her senior season. She graduated with a degree in American Studies from the School of Arts and Letters. Upon graduation, Layshia was drafted into the WNBA by the Indiana Fever. She spent three years there coming off the bench before being traded to the Atlanta Dream. This trade proved to be a true game changer and took Layshia’s career in a much different direction. As starting point guard for Atlanta, her numbers increased two-fold, earning her a spot on the All Star team, while setting league records in assists. This landed Layshia on the list of 30 spots vying to make the United States National Team that will

represent our country this coming September in the Canary Islands. Two years from now, the summer Olympics will be held in Tokyo, Japan. Layshia has already participated in two camps in the overall process of selecting this team and has two more to go before the final announcement of the 12 players who will make up this elite squad. She continually questions if she is working out enough, doing enough. Let’s hope that getting a spot on the National team will quell these doubts. In addition to all of this, her off season schedule has also been busy. On the weekends, she has been doing color commentary for the Pac 12’s women’s basketball games. She has already shot an interview for ESPN’s Outside the Lines which should be airing soon. Layshia has spoken on numerous panels and was the keynote speaker at a weekend symposium in Pacifica, California this last Fall. She has also been published in the Players Tribune, Derek Jeter’s online magazine. All of these experiences will no doubt lead to other opportunities to speak and write and tell her story in broader circles. Perhaps the most interesting part of her entire story is the name of the mascot of Layshia’s current team. She plays for the Atlanta Dream. That mascot is a word from a famous speech given by Martin Luther King Jr. He shared with all of us that he, indeed,

had a dream. Layshia, too, has dreams. She dreams of a WNBA championship and a Gold Medal. She dreams of a long and fulfilling professional career. She dreams of equality as a social norm not a societal taboo. She dreams of justice in a world of injustice. She dreams that public bathrooms will mirror those we have in our hallways and master bedrooms. She dreams the the L and the G and the B and the T and the Q will be replaced with empathy and understanding and education and utter acceptance with perspective. She dreams of peace. She dreams of gender not as an identifier but rather an equalizer. She dreams of being a Mother. She dreams that there actually is somewhere over the rainbow. This story has been told in two distinct and vastly different parts. Layshia wishes to be seen not as separate parts but rather as the whole story combined as one. She just so happens to be a pro basketball player that nonetheless will wait in line with you to order a bowl of vegetarian chili. She is an activist that will cheer right along with you at the often hilarious ‘Six and Under’ soccer match. She very well may someday be an Olympian, but she will still be next to you, basket cradled in one arm, trying to decide how many tomatoes and cucumbers to purchase. She may be working on the next article to be published, but she is also just another Perk

patron. She is going to move away from Chico in April and then will return on short and extended stays in the future. She hopes to be still be considered a local. We have often laughed at the fact that if she were an NBA player, her movement around this city may not be with the same anonymity. I would urge you, if you like, to acknowledge her when you see her, maybe introduce yourself. And just maybe, produce her cover and ask for her to autograph it. Yeah, let’s make it that story.

“It was so easy, really, the easiest thing I’ve ever done. I was apprehensive beforehand but it was a cakewalk, and everything is just so clear now!” the changes he experienced were just a natural part of getting older. When he turned 76, he went in for an eye exam at Ridge Eye Care and Dr. DiPietro found that he had cataracts, a gradual clouding of the eye’s natural lens that lies behind the iris and pupil. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in people over the age of 40 and, untreated, are the main cause of blindness worldwide. Luckily for Monty, the disorder was discovered early, saving his vision from meeting an untimely fate.

Monty Niles O F N O R T H VA L L E Y E Y E C A R E

There are a number of things that get better with age, but eyesight is rarely considered one of them. For Monty Niles, turning 80 brought a fair number of changes to his life; surprisingly, having 20/20 vision was one of them. Thanks to the team at North Valley Eye Care, Monty’s vision is back to that of his youth, and he could not imagine a better way to take on a new decade. Originally from Livingston, Montana, Monty grew up on the Yellowstone River just north of Yellowstone National Park. Graced from birth with one of the most picturesque landscapes in the United States, Monty developed an early appreciation for the beauty around him and the vision that let him take it all in. That acute vision served him well over the years and allowed a certain level of attention to detail that helped make a name for himself in Montana’s construction industry. Though you may not know him personally, you may already be acquainted with his work, as he helped build the highly sought after cabins at Yellowstone National Park. Monty eventually moved to Paradise in 1960 to be near his father and began working as a painting contractor. The years passed by and with each passing year his vision began to fade. Though his once perfect eyesight had considerably degraded, the change over time was so gradual that he had barely noticed it himself. Monty assumed that 16

Though cataracts are best treated by removal, there are certain conditions necessary to guarantee the best possible results after surgery. For Monty, this meant waiting a few years after the initial diagnosis and having his vision carefully monitored. In November of 2017, he was given the green light and underwent surgery to remove his cataracts—first in his right eye, and later his left. The experience gave him his first real opportunity to compare the eyesight he had been living with to the eyesight he had as a young man. The difference between his right and left eye after the first surgery was night and day. He recalls noticing the brilliant red color and sharp lines of the digital readout on his alarm clock on the first night of his surgery, a significant change to the blurred numbers seen in his left eye. The next morning, he realized how different everything else was. Color, clarity, and sharpness were immediately increased in his right eye. As he put it, “It was like seeing a dimly lit room in my left eye and a room lit with bright LED bulbs in my right!” In December, Monty received the second surgery on his left eye and cannot imagine seeing the world any other way than he does now. Both surgeries were quick and painless; the only discomfort he remembers from either was from the eye drops he had to use before and after the surgeries. “It was truly amazing,” Monty said, “It was so easy, really, the easiest thing I’ve ever done. I was apprehensive beforehand but it was a cakewalk, and everything is just so clear now!” Asked about his experience with North Valley Eye Care, Monty lit up and said, “Dr. Barthelow is a great man and an excellent doctor; he sure knows what he’s doing. They have a real swell bunch of people working over there. Their surgical coordinator was such a sweetheart, and made sure that everything worked with my schedule. They’re all wonderful people and provide great care. I would most definitely recommend them.” When asked for his advice to others experiencing changes in vision, he replied, “Go see your doctor now and take care of it as soon as you can. The sooner, the better!” Monty turned 80 on February 4th and does not look a day over 60. His eyesight is that of a 20 year old and he couldn’t be happier with the change.

IF YOU’RE LIKE MONTY AND HAVE EXPERIENCED CHANGES IN YOUR VISION, CALL NORTH VALLEY EYE CARE TODAY AT (530) 891-1900. AS HE’LL BE THE FIRST TO TELL YOU, IT’LL BE THE BEST DECISION YOU’LL EVER MAKE.

A Recovering Patient HIGH PRAISE FROM

May 1st, 2018

When asked if he would recommend Twin Oaks Post Acute Rehab to others in need of rehabilitation, Warren Rogers, a current resident at the center, promptly replied in the affirmative. “The caregivers are nice,” he states matter-of-factly. “The care is excellent.” A former electrician, Warren sought care at Twin Oaks after suffering from a debilitating stroke two years ago. In spite of a long and hard recovery, today, Warren is lively and cheerful, and welcomes visitors to his room with a friendly smile. On the wall across from his bed, Warren has pinned up dozens of photos featuring family and loved ones. He speaks fondly of his wife and three children and proudly shows off a warm fleece blanket printed with a photo of his two grandkids. When family members drop by, he especially enjoys taking them outside to the facility grounds where they can sit together on a bench and visit.

Though Warren does not gloss over the difficulties of recovering from his stroke, he praises Twin Oaks for helping restore his health and quality of life. With the support

of the care team, Warren has made great strides toward retraining his mind and body for speech and mobility. Carefully enunciating each word, he describes the exercises he has been working on with the physical therapists, including conditioning movements to regain full function of his legs. Warren adds that Twin Oaks has provided him with not only exceptional healthcare, but also a fun social life. While the center offers a number of activities and entertainment options for guests, he says his favorite group game is one that involves balloon battling with a stick! Having become involved with the daily activities and formed friendships with other residents at the center, Warren feels like he is a part of the community at Twin Oaks. And he says, smiling, “[I’m] feeling better now.” WHILE NO ONE WANTS TO EXPERIENCE A HEALTH PROBLEM LIKE A STROKE, REHABILITATION AT TWIN OAKS ENSURES THE RECOVERY PROCESS WILL BE AS POSITIVE AS POSSIBLE. March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. Each year Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that in 2013 about 2.8 million TBI injuries and deaths occurred in the United States. The leading causes of TBI are falls, being struck by or against an object and motor vehicle crashes. Falls are the leading cause for persons 75 years and older and children 1–4 years of age. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of non-fatal TBIs in persons 15–44 years of age. Did you realize that a concussion is a type of brain injury which may or may not be accompanied by loss of consciousness? The definitions and understanding of concussions are evolving. Concussions are underreported, underdiagnosed, underestimated and the effects should be taken seriously. The CDC describes a TBI as a bump, blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating injury that disrupts the function of the brain. Not every jolt or blow to the head results in a TBI but brain injuries range from mild to severe. A brain injury can vary from a slight change of consciousness (mild) 24

U P G R A D E D L I V I N G M AG A Z I N E M A R C H 2 0 1 8

to a long period of unconsciousness and or amnesia (severe). After a brain injury, there can be short or long-term effects that may include: impaired cognition, movement, sensation and emotional function. Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is different from TBI in that it is not caused by a physical force but can result in many of the same difficulties. Examples of ABI can be from a stroke, tumor, infection and lack of oxygen to the brain. Millions of people are living with brain injury related disabilities. There is no cure for brain injury nor is there a set recovery time. This leads to lasting effects on individuals, families, and communities. The Brain Injury Coalition (BIC) is a local non-profit organization dedicated to educating the community about brain injury, promoting prevention, advocating for and providing support to individuals who have sustained a brain injury and to their families. BIC provides information and referral to services, maintains access to publications, resources, and facilitates educational support groups.

My goal as a physical fitness professional is to help you optimize human performance by using your mind-body connection. Stretching is one of the most effective ways to open up new channels for the mind to reconnect with the body. As you go through your busy day, muscles are used in several different ways. Some are getting the chance to stretch and lengthen while others might not get the opportunity to express their potential. Without consideration over time, your muscles will shorten and become dysfunctional from lack of use. This imbalanced expression of the muscular system can cause pain and discomfort leading to a less than desirable quality of life. One of the largest contributors to this problem is something almost unavoidable today; sitting for extended periods of time without stretching. This has proven to be a considerable problem; jeopardizing your potential to live the fullest life possible. With more people sitting behind a desk than ever before, I say it’s time to take a stand, literally. The quicker you can introduce stretching as a part of your everyday life the easier the transition from stiff desk jockey to malleable happy human will be. Try building the routine into your workday by setting

a timer for every twenty to sixty minutes as a reminder to stretch. Another viable option and, one of my personal favorites, is to introduce stretching first thing in the morning and right before bed at night. Set ten minutes aside both morning and night giving yourself an invigorating start to your morning as well as the chance to unwind allowing the clutter from the day to wash away. Here are two of the most effective stretches that can be performed with no equipment necessary. The first is the Couch Stretch which enables the opening of your hips from a long day of sitting. The Table Top allows for the opening of your shoulders mitigating a long day of typing or texting. Keep in mind that the American College of Sports Medicine recommends two to four repetitions of stretches totaling sixty seconds per stretch to improve flexibility. Make it your goal to connect the mind with the body and fully get the benefits of stretching. Literally, take that stand, begin today!

EXPRESSION Top models have built their career on this attribute. Movie stars often end a dramatic line with the arch of these. Many men don’t realize they possess a perfect pair. So what are they? You guessed it! Eyebrows. Jennie Wolfe, owner of Microblading Chico | Cosmetic Tattoo Studio, has made it her mission to provide Chico (and beyond) with expert microblading services. This technique is performed with a hand tool that places percise strokes into the skin, mimicking the appearance of real hair. Then voilà, a perfect, natural looking eyebrow hair is made. “It’s all about creating fine hair strokes. It sounds invasive but it’s really not. I use an angled microblade tool with different thickness options to achieve a really natural looking brow,” she explains. This service is particularly beneficial to people who have lost their eyebrows, due to over plucking in their youth or that natural regression that happens over time. Jennie’s goal is to give you back a little of what you lost. These semi-permanent locks flow with the natural shape of your face and enhance any existing hairs.

featured in InStyle magazine to name a few), Jennie has taken classes from the best of the best. Her services also recently expanded to include cosmetic enhancements, like faux freckles and lip blush. To enhance your lips, she will shade the entire surface with a natural color that mimics a stain or lip sheer. “There are so many techniques out there and it takes ongoing education, so it’s really important to do your research before committing to one service or technician,” says Jennie. Focused on bringing out the features you already have, this is a sure way to enhance the natural beauty of your face! It combines her zeal for makeup and expert artistry, with tattoos which she’s had since her 20’s. “I’m hip to that scene,” she smiles. is expected by June 2018; the remainder of the United States will continue receiving cards through April 2019. Once you receive your new card, destroy your old card immediately by shredding it. Do not throw it into the trash without shredding first as this is a common way for scammers to obtain information. The new Medicare numbers will not change Medicare benefits, and recipients may begin using their new card when they receive it. Ronda Kramer, Director of the Passages HICAP Program (Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program), says "Beware of anyone who contacts you about your new Medicare card as they are likely not legitimate representatives. Medicare will never ask you for your personal or private information in order to send out your new Medicare number and card. Make sure your mailing address is up to date to ensure that you receive your card safely. If your address needs to be corrected, contact Social Security by visiting www.ssa.gov/myaccount or calling 1.800.772.1213. TTY users can call 1.800.325.0778. Finally, understand that mailing everyone a new card will take some time. Your card might arrive at different times than your friends or neighbors."

You & the Scammers Personal identity theft is a growing risk in the United States and seniors are one of the more heavily targeted age groups. In fact, people age 65 and older accounted for nearly 2.6 million identity theft cases reported in the United States during 2014 alone. Medicare fraud has long been one of the frontrunners when it comes to personal identity crimes, but the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) are looking to change that with a new program aimed at combating identity theft and safeguarding taxpayer dollars. Starting April 2018, CMS will remove Social Security numbers from Medicare cards and begin mailing new cards directly to Medicare recipients. These new cards will include a new Medicare ID number that is unique to each individual Medicare recipient. The alpha-numeric ID helps safeguard your 30

personal information by using numbers and letters to create a more secure identifier that is considerably more difficult for hackers and scammers to generate. Perhaps more importantly, it relinquishes the need for your Social Security number on the card, placing a stronger barrier between scammers and your personal information. New Medicare cards will begin arriving in mailboxes starting in April 2018 with staggered mailings throughout the year. In California, completion of the mailing process

ENSURING PEACE OF MIND WITH

The Right Insurance California is often referred to as the breadbasket of the world; that is to say that it produces a significant amount of the world’s food. The designation is certainly well deserved as our state is the world’s fifth largest supplier of food and agriculture commodities. Over one-third of the United States’ vegetables, and two-thirds of its fruits and nuts, are grown right here in California. Agriculture is at the heart of our state and has been for quite some time; perhaps even more so here in Northern California. With so much of our state heavily invested in agriculture, and many residents’ livelihoods dependent upon it, insuring against loss is of utmost importance. InterWest Insurance Services has been helping members of this vital industry do just that for over a century. Former Vice President of InterWest, Tim Hanna, brought the importance of agriculture insurance to the forefront in northern California. Focused on providing education to those in the agribusiness industry, he set out in 1976 to ensure that farmers, processors, and manufacturers in Butte, Glenn, and Tehama counties made the most of good years and were well covered against those that turned bad. Agriculture is an unpredictable industry, and, as many in agribusiness would attest to, one bad year can be more than sufficient to permanently cripple a business. Tim sought to level the playing field for agribusiness clients; over the years, this field of insurance became his specialty and, later, a major focus for InterWest as a whole. Agribusiness insurance is available for every enterprise that participates in the process of bringing food to market. Whether an excavator, single-orchard or large scale farmer, rancher, harvester, produce handler, processor, or equipment manufacturer, 32

InterWest Insurance Services has a policy to defend against losses and the knowledge to assess areas of weakness. This proactive approach to insurance not only decreases potential claims but saves considerable money for clients in the long run. From crop insurance that protects against fires, flood, drought, frost, and pests to workers’ compensation, theft, and property insurance; they have the ability to make sure every base is covered, regardless of whether you’re conducting business at home or abroad. Insuring the agriculture community has become a cornerstone of InterWest Insurance Services; it now makes up nearly 40% of their business in Chico and 13% of the company’s total commercial business across 9 offices in California. Due to the volume of clientele, InterWest now has its own agribusiness department with a team of specialists dedicated to assisting the agriculture community. Within the department, loss control experts audit business operations to make sure everything is done properly, thereby minimizing exposure to loss. In the event of an insurance claim, internal claims advocates help clients navigate the claim process, taking on the voice of the insured so they do not have to make calls themselves, and eventually ensure they’re back up and running as if nothing ever happened. Though there are a number of specialists available to assist clients within the agribusiness department, the following four individuals are particularly important to the work being done in our neck of the woods. If you are involved in agribusiness and could use a new policy, a policy audit, or assessment of your business’ operations then call InterWest Insurance Services today at 530.895.1010.

CAÍN MEDINA Caín Medina grew up in Orland’s venerable agriculture community before obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Chico State. He later worked for Paiva Hulling & Shelling, Inc, where he was first introduced to the insurance industry as the company’s human resource manager. Given the task of dealing with commercial insurance for the plant and health benefits for its employees, Caín realized that his parents farming operation could also benefit from his newfound knowledge. He began developing a new insurance policy for his parents farm and met Vice President of InterWest Insurance Services, Tim Hanna. Impressed with his straightforward demeanor, Tim offered Caín a job. Caín has been with InterWest for the past 11 years and focuses on the needs of the agriculture and food manufacturing/ processing industries. He is bilingual in Spanish and English and is working on obtaining his Certified Risk Manager (CRM) and Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designations. He is married to his wonderful wife, Lupe, and they reside in Orland with their two children Abrahán and Itzél.

Debra’s passion for helping others extends into the community far beyond insurance. Her stewardship activities include mentoring students at Fairview High School, Chico High School sports boosters, and community work through the Tuesday Noon Rotary and California Women in Agriculture.

After graduating from Chico State, Taylor worked in the agriculture industry as a commodity inspector for California Agriculture Support Services and later for ScottsMiracle-Gro. Fellow golf enthusiast, Bill Rich, introduced Taylor to InterWest’s new vice president, Tony Pozas, in 2016. 2017

Tax Reform & Business Succession Planning By now as most of us are aware there are a whole new set of tax laws and rules generally beginning with the 2018 tax year (otherwise known as the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). This is the biggest tax reform law in thirty years and one that will make fundamental changes in the way you, your family and your business, calculate your federal income tax and the amount of federal tax you will pay. Depending on your individual circumstances you could have lower tax rates in 2018. A brief and definitely not all-inclusive summary of some of the tax law changes are listed below:

BUSINESS CHANGES:

• New deduction of 20% for “Qualified” Pass-Through Income (consult your tax advisor on this one!) • Corporate tax rate is a flat 21% and corporate Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) is repealed. • Depreciation of agricultural assets shortened from 7 years to 5 years. • Section 179 expense write-off is $1,000,000 (vs. $500,000 in 2017). • 100% Bonus expense of additional first-year depreciation deduction is allowed for new and used property (vs. 50% for new property in 2017). • Domestic Production Activities Deduction Repealed (DPAD).

34

U P G R A D E D L I V I N G M AG A Z I N E M A R C H 2 0 1 8

• Personal exemption deduction is no longer allowed (2017 exemption was $4,150). • Child tax credit increased to $2,000 (vs. $1,000 in 2017) generally for child age 17 or younger. • State income tax and property tax paid limited to $10,000 as an itemized deduction. • Mortgage interest paid on equity debt is no longer deductible for any taxpayers.

ESTATE TAX AND GIFT TAX CHANGES: • Annual gift tax exclusion is $15,000 for 2018 (was $14,000 for 2017)

• The estate tax exclusion has nearly doubled for deaths occurring in 2018 to $11,200,000 ($10,000,000 adjusted for inflation). However, as noted below, this is not a reason not to do your estate tax planning.

SUCCESSION PLANNING:

The future of the tax preparer role is changing, just as all of our lives constantly change over time. It is my experience that succession planning is an area which is often overlooked, or rather, put off until later, which is why I bring it up. It is important to consult with a trusted advisor in order not only to minimize estate tax (if that is an issue), but other costs as well when transferring property such as statutory probate fees, county property taxes, and more. Every family situation and business has a separate set of circumstances (we are all different people) which should be addressed to ensure a smooth transition, not only on your death, but prior to your passing so you can plan on retiring, or at least working less.

DESIGN WITH A DIFFERENCE

THE CLIENT The first thing Jenny Reilly said was “We are dancers after dinner!” Jenny and her husband grew up in Corning and graduated from Corning High. They were married in 2004 and, shortly before their wedding day, were told by a realtor about the perfect house for the two of them. They found the house to be very nice but were quite certain they could not afford it. As Jenny put it, “This is a small town with some lovely ladies and caring people,” so one month before they got married, they moved in. After their daughter Lily who is nine and before the birth of their daughter Violet who is two, the family dynamic changed. Jenny shared that she and her husband would fantasize about 36

U P G R A D E D L I V I N G M AG A Z I N E M A R C H 2 0 1 8

what to do with the kitchen. The L-shaped counter protruding into the dining area needed to be replaced with a big island, but they were sure one would not fit. Jenny admitted that change was big, so after some deep thought and the urging of a fellow teacher, Jenny placed a call to Ric at New Again Kitchen Remodeling.

THE CALL Ric made an appointment to meet in Corning at the house. Jenny began explaining white and gray were her choice of colors. Ric “nudged” her away from that and convinced her that black would be the

ideal color match to the white. After taking some measurements and contemplating the design, he informed Jenny that this would call for a complete gutting of the kitchen right down to the studs. This would allow for the relocation of both the sink and the stove. In addition, he pointed out that an island would indeed fit nicely. With excitement about the design, especially the color change and island, Jenny gave the go ahead on the entire project.

THE CURE The demo job on the entire kitchen took only a day, however the entire process took

Bedrosian tile backsplash

The special features of the design allowed for the installation of double waste baskets and every base cabinet has pull out shelves. Next came the Bedrosian CONNECT

tile backsplash using 3 x 6 subway tile including a Luxemberg/Palais accent piece design. The crew also eliminated the dropped fluorescent light box and installed 7 recessed can lights and pendants over the island. The entire kitchen, entryway and hallway flooring were tiled with the same matching wood design. Jenny said that the tile guy, “knocked it out of the park!”

They now eat dinners on it, and breakfast on Saturday morning. Her girls decorate cookies and do homework on the stunning countertop. All visitors simply gather around this island naturally. And, of course, there will always be dancing after dinner! If you find yourself moved by Jenny’s story then call Ric at New Again Remodeling at 530.899.2888.

She lit up when explaining just how comfortable she was with all the workers who came in and out of her house during the process. She also is out of this world in love with Ric’s island design. She says the island has changed their day to day life.

5 weeks due largely to getting the floor properly leveled and installed. The crew, due to the complete gutting, then hung new sheetrock, textured and painted the walls and ceilings. The white Shaker cabinets were installed next on the primary kitchen perimeter and espresso Shaker cabinets on the island. Jeffrey Alexander door hardware were furnished and installed. New Calacatta quartz countertops were then put in place including the installation of a Dawn sink.

Though new home construction was down, it was clear residents were looking for ways to improve upon their current homes. In 2009, as a newly licensed general contractor, he started his own construction business focusing on remodeling. A few years later, he received his plumbing license and began working as a subcontractor for 3 Lowe’s stores in the North Valley, working in homes from Redding to Yuba City. Now, along with his home remodeling and construction services, he also offers plumbing services.

KP DESIGNS Accessibility is Within Reach For local contractor and remodeling professional, Keith Praizler, owner of KP Design & Construction, Inc., making homes more functional, accessible, and beautiful to their residents has become one of his primary missions. Over the years, Keith recognized that a number of important aspects of the remodeling process had gone unattended. Though the designs were beautiful, functionality was often sacrificed unnecessarily. With this in mind, he decided to open his own remodeling company and showroom to right those wrongs. He has partnered with local manufacturers like Oak Ridge Cabinets, and industry leaders like Kohler and Daltile, to provide all aspects of a remodel at a reasonable price. His new showroom, located at 392 Connors Court, Suite B, in Chico, is a testament to achieving these goals. Products like Kohler’s affordable smooth-walled showers, with groutless composite stone, allow Keith to remodel a 42

shower using a beautiful smooth surface that is easy for the homeowner to clean in minutes. Curbless showers are another way to turn a bathroom into a more accessible space, further ensuring that they are totally functional for aging homeowners. Keith is quick to mention that a homeowner needs to love the look of their remodel as much as the ease of using it. KP Designs offers granite, quartz, tile, and various composites for countertops along with Kohler fixtures and local cabinetry options to fit every taste. Better still, they provide full design and remodeling services from the planning phase all the way to cleanup, ensuring that every remodel is beautiful, clean, and professionally completed in a timely manner. Born and raised in Chico, Keith attended Pleasant Valley High School and Butte College before moving to San Francisco. He began working for Coldwell Banker in 2005,

We could not be more excited for the future that Keith is building with his wife, Amy, their daughter, Olivia, and their second daughter who is arriving in mid-May. If you’re looking for a kitchen or bathroom that is as functional as it is accessible and beautiful, call Keith at 530.828.2769 and set up an in-home consultation. You can also find them at the Home and Garden Show in Chico on April 21st and 22nd or Yuba City on March 23rd, 24th, and 25th. We’ll look forward to seeing you there!

remodeling homes and fixing properties before they were listed for sale, but dreaded the daily commute that stole hours from each of his days. Eventually he decided to move back to Chico in 2007, one year before the housing market crashed.

HOME SWEET PROTECTED HOME Nothing feels better than home, especially when you know it’s protected. It isn’t just any home; it is your home. The place where you unwind after a long day, gather with your loved ones, and celebrate some of life’s biggest moments. If your home were damaged by a fire or someone broke in, your insurance policy could help pay to rebuild your home or replace your possessions. Without a policy you would have to cover those expenses out of your own pocket. Most homeowner policies provide protection for your home and other structures on your property, as well as your personal belongings such as clothing, furniture, electronics, and—with limitations—certain valuables. Policies typically cover losses caused by theft, fire, lightning, windstorm, hail, smoke, and vandalism to name a few. But did you know your homeowners policy may also help pay for other costs? Here are a few examples: • Removal of your damaged property after a fire or other covered loss. • Additional living expenses to live elsewhere if your home is uninhabitable because of a covered loss. • Financial protection against lawsuits. For example, your policy may help cover legal defense costs if a visitor to your home accidentally got hurt and took you to court. It is important to note that you should insure your home for the estimated cost to rebuild it rather than the real estate value. Insuring your home for at least 100% of its estimated replacement

cost—not the current market value—could give you the means to replace your home entirely in the event of a loss. You may also need extra protection for things like jewelry and fine arts, or business equipment if you work from home. There are a few things you should know about what your policy does not cover. Homeowner policies do not cover water damage caused by flood or underground water, or damage from an earthquake or mudslide. With these types of incidents on the rise, it is important to know that you must purchase separate policies to protect your home from the perils of earthquake and flood. Review the limitations and exclusions in your policy; it’s not glamorous or fun to “read the fine print”, but if you don’t, you could be missing valuable information So, how do you know if you have the right coverage? Talk to your agent. Your insurance needs change over time, so reviewing your policy annually can help you determine if your policy makes sense for your current situation. Talking with your agent also ensures you're not overlooking important add-ons to your policy, or missing valuable discounts. Your home means a lot to you, and you’ve worked hard for it. Protecting it with the right coverage provides peace of mind, and if the unexpected happens, you’ll have the protection you need.

HOW TO ADD POPS OF

Color! Pops of color will keep your interior and exterior spaces interesting, fun and fresh for every season. Adding those pops may seem a little intimidating, but really, it’s easy, I promise! Although it does involve a little math—remember fractions? In this case, we will be dealing with the 60/30/10 percentages of each of your rooms.

The first step is simply to stand back in the doorway of your room and survey. You will first focus on the main color of your room which should be about 60%. It most likely should be a neutral, white, gray, greige, beige, or mocha. Typically, this is mainly wall color and flooring. The next 30% is your secondary or supporting color. This comes in the form of furniture pieces, curtains, an accent chair, countertops, or cabinets. It also could be a natural material such as shiplap, stone or a painted accent wall. This often contains shades or tones of darker gray, navy, sage, pink or even red. Its job is to compliment the main neutral color. The last 10% becomes your POP of color. This is your opportunity to add wild colors, patterns and prints such as sunny yellow pillows on the bed, deep purple towels in the bath, luxurious teal throw on the sofa, or wild and fun artwork. Anything goes here! 48

U P G R A D E D L I V I N G M AG A Z I N E M A R C H 2 0 1 8

There is not a “how to” when it comes to adding your pop of color. Maybe your pop is woodland, perhaps adding fur, natural wood pieces, or stones from nature. Be sure to repeat in small doses throughout each room. You may try romantic reds for Valentine’s day and winter months to bring in warmth and love. Springtime may call for citrus colors. Look for aqua and blues for summer. Find vases, glass bowls, decorative boxes with fun geometric patterns, even lamp shades. Pops of color can also be soft like the new blush pink, soft sage or mixed metal like brushed brass, satin nickel and copper. Again, anything goes here. A fun idea is to prepare these things seasonally so they will be ready for the differing times of the year. Pack a box for each season, and plan to make the changes to your main room remembering also to repeat in small doses throughout your home. This will help to ensure that your home will continually receive a refreshing pop. Always try to remember to buy things in colors you love in or out of the current season. Now all you need to do is stand back, survey your spaces and let each room go with your pops of color!

can really make a statement. It has large lush leaves and the plant itself can get quite large if you let it. Tip: Ficus prefers to dry out before being watered and a bright room is best with not too much direct sun.

MONSTERA DELICIOSA

The Swiss Cheese Plant has massive glossy leaves with finely cut perforations throughout which looks really cool! These plants are carefree and create a lush tropical feel. Tip: Clip a stem and throw them in a vase and you have a striking arrangement that lasts and lasts.

SANSEVIERIA

The Snake Plant is very popular these days, too. The variance of height and foliage colors is impressive. These plants are very popular for their clean vertical and modern feel. They also thrive on neglect. Notable varieties include ‘Moonshine’, Starfish’ and ‘Bantels Sensation’. Bonus: Snake Plants are air purifying.

TILLANDSIA

Air Plants are everywhere these days! They are easy care and look stunning. Throw them on a wreath, centerpiece or arrange them on a mantle or bookshelf. Yes, they do not live in soil but, there is some care you need to give these beauties. If you want them to last keep them in bright light. Tip: Soak your Air Plant about every 7–10 days in water for an hour or two.

CACTUS AND SUCCULENTS

TRENDY INDOOR PLANTS

Houseplants have had a resurgence in recent years. And why not? Bringing the outdoors in can be easy and beautiful. Whether you are looking to create a jungalow feel or a clean modern look for your home there is a houseplant for you. Here are some of my favorites that are trending right now:

FICUS LYRATA

The Fiddle Leaf Fig- It’s nearly impossible to visit a design blog or home magazine without seeing this beauty. The Fiddle leaf

Who can resist those succulent leaves and the statement a cactus can give to your place? There are an endless amount to choose from! Most importantly you must have good sunlight to provide in order to keep these guys happy. Good news is you can grow all of these plants successfully. Yes, You! If you ask me, houseplants are a must in any living space!

The Happie

EAR We all know where the happiest place on earth is. Yes, it is Prestige Nursery on Fair Street! The joy is palpable upon entering the grounds. If you are lucky enough to be greeted simultaneously by Billie Araiza and Angie Handy, you might think that the Fair Street Electrical Parade is going by. Billie is the Fundraising Manager for this nonprofit and Angie is the nursery manager. The word prestige has been associated with the Work Training Center for some 35 years. Prestige means “distinction and reputation arising from success and achievement.” This word coincides perfectly with the WTC”s Mission; “to assist and support people with disabilities and increase independence.” Both Billie and Angie believe that this word adds an air of dignity for the nursery workers. Angie’s excitement is contagious and grew to unabashed joy as she shared that this weekend a customer said, “I have not been here since last Fall but returned because the best thing about this place is that you guys are always smiling!” Smiling is but one of her numerous qualities. Billie may have said it best—“Angie has done miracles!” The individual notoriety disappears when strolling the grounds. Angie is quick to point out the incredible job the crew members do. She points out the main goal is to get jobs for the crew members. One former member has an internship in Paradise and another a job at Lowes. The goal of the nursery is to grow 90% of the vegetables and annuals on site. Currently that number is 30%. Prestige buys from Sustainable Seeds and are blessed with all kinds of cuttings and start-ups from local gardens. Billie acknowledged that the pricing

est Place On

RTH is “very competitive” mainly because of the recycled nature of donated plants. The profit goes directly into the sustainability of the business. The nursery carries a little bit of everything and, as Angie states “can produce a lot of stuff.” Prestige strives to have an array of plants and specializes in season appropriate varieties. The nursery looks for fun and different plants with rich texture and varying foliage. One advantage to this is the increased skill level of crew members. The crew is involved in seeding, weeding, watering and the construction of all wooden planter boxes. The nursery is open to the public Monday through Saturday and has a booth at the Thursday Night Market. They practice organic gardening but are not currently certified. Two projects on the horizon are to team up with Leon’s Bistro with a farm to table partnership and installing a hydroponic system.

FOR MORE INFORMATION ON PRESTIGE NURSERY, VISIT THEM AT 2270 FAIR STREET IN CHICO OR CALL 530.343.7615.

WRITTEN BY KEVIN DOLAN PHOTOS BY EMILY TEAGUE

Angie’s knowledge and boundless energy coupled with the upbeat and diligent manner of the crew members results in the overall success of this legit nursery. What the crew members receive from their endeavors is also real. They have received 1st place honors at the annual Garden Show and the nursery is featured on the “Nursery Crawl” happening in Butte, Glenn, and Tehama counties each Spring. Not surprisingly, the event, which occurs in February, was led this year by Angie Handy. The happiest place on earth now is known throughout the entire North State!

FARM FRESH

CANOPY EFFECT On this unusually sunny February day, cerulean skies cover Canopy Farm and the myriad produce happily growing here. Crunchy carrots, sweet grapes, and tropical Golden Berries are just some of the tasty items you will find in this eclectic mix. If you’re anything like me, you may not be familiar with the term Golden Berry. Thankfully, owner Benji Vandermolen is eager to share his wealth of knowledge in naturally grown grub. Golden Berries were the very first seed he purchased but he had no place to grow them. “I learned that they need full sun and really rich soil. They’re so popular that neighborhood kids would come out here and grab them.” With an almost indescribable tangy sweet flavor, they have citrus notes, as well as hints of pineapple when you let them sit on your tongue. Although Golden Berries won’t be in season until the summer, their crop is already looking strong. Benji says, “we don’t even have to plant them anymore. They just come back year after year.” Another thing that continues year after year is the quality of food being grown here. The name Canopy Farm comes from the 100 year old Oak tree that stands guard over the 15 acres of parceled land. That canopy effect that big trees branches create results in better biology for the soil and higher saturation of nutrition in the food grown near it. What could be better than tasty and nutritious food grown naturally?! Benji believes you’d be hard pressed to find anything more satisfying. “Growing food is in my blood! My grandpa was a farmer for 90 years and my mom is a master gardener. All the women in my family have green thumbs,” says Benji. He grew up in the Midwest surrounded by apple trees aplenty and fresh raspberries, until moving to Aspen, Colorado. After spending some time there concentrating on property management, and skiing of course, Benji cashed in his truck and bought Canopy Farm in 2013. Alongside his co54

operator and partner Auburn Johnson, the two have been teaming up to master sustainable growing methods ever since.

earthy, similar to mushrooms, and vibrant red peppers that hang ready to be plucked from their vine.

Starting out at Organic Valley in her early 20’s, Auburn loved working outside but wasn’t sure her position there was what she wanted to do forever. Having always been interested in food, natural healing and working in the open air, it all became the complete picture when Canopy Farm began. Auburn explains, “this wasn't a plan I had, but it makes sense now. Of course, I'm a farmer!” As we walk up and down the hand tilled rows, she points out unique vegetables, like the white eggplant that tastes

With our mild winters and warm summers, Butte County farmers grow a bountiful amount of fresh food. To stand out from the competition, Canopy Farm initially started selling their crops directly to local restaurants like Bacio Catering, Red Tavern and Tin Roof Bakery. Before they knew it, they were selling out of everything. Through providing consistently clean, fresh, tasty produce to popular restaurants, word of mouth spread about Canopy Farm. Local chefs started

frequently showing up at the farmer's markets to buy fresh rather than store bought food. When observing the different varieties of leafy greens growing here, it’s easy to see why they are thriving. You almost want to uproot and put them in your mouth right there just to hear that satisfying crunch of freshly grown vegetables. That craving will carry on into summer with the bearings of Canopy Farms’ fruit trees. We can’t wait to take a bite! FIND CANOPY FARM AT THE WEDNESDAY MORNING FARMERS MARKET AND KEEP A LOOKOUT FOR THEM AT SATURDAY MORNING MARKET STARTING IN THE SPRING. 55

Mushroom season is upon us here in the Pacific Northwest! Spring rains and cool temps provide the perfect conditions for mushrooms to push above ground. David Arora states in All That the Rain Promises and More… that mushrooms are the fruiting body of certain fungi and are commonly recognized by a rounded cap with gills on the underside. Once mature, mushrooms release millions of tiny spores into the air in hopes of finding favorable conditions for the germination of new mushrooms. Interestingly, unlike plants and more like animals, mushrooms survive off outside nutrients, like fallen trees and logs, which they break down into simpler compounds through digestion. These fascinating creatures have been widely feared as toxic and poisonous. In reality, there are many mushrooms that are delicious, nutritious and highly medicinal. In fact, these small but powerful superfoods are packed with health benefits! According to Paul Stamets’ Mycelium Running, mushrooms are extremely nutrient rich, high in antioxidants, and a good source of fiber. Adding mushrooms to your diet is a great way to eat healthier because they are low in fat and carbohydrates, and contain almost no calories. They are a great source of minerals like iron, potassium, and copper, and contain Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and B vitamins, which help the body derive energy from food. Mushrooms have been used medicinally for centuries by different cultures around the world, especially 56

China, Japan, and Korea for their surprising array of antibiotics. Reishi, Cordyceps, Shiitake and Lion’s Mane are a few of the most powerful for improving human health. These and many more include antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties, and are known to reduce the risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Last but not least, antioxidants found in mushrooms help stimulate the immune system to fight cancerous cells and prevent the formation of tumors. Today, mushroom enthusiasts cultivate the most delicious edible varieties. Among the most delightful are Oyster, Crimini, Chanterelle, Black Truffle, Portobella, Morel and Shiitake. Since mushrooms’ flavors differ greatly between species, there are different suggestions for preparation. Ask the experts at the Mushroom Adventures booth at Saturday farmer’s market in Chico about the different flavors and how to best prepare each type of mushroom. In general, mushrooms are more nutritious and easily digested when heated or sautéed. However, overcooking them can reduce their vitamin content and most of the flavor as well. Instead of sautéeing them in butter, try using olive oil or ghee (clarified butter), which are much healthier ingredients and can also be found at the Saturday Farmer’s Market. Just as mushrooms’ health benefits are endless, so are uses for them in recipes! Cooked mushrooms are delicious in omelets, added to soups and pastas, or stuffed with your favorite veggies. Or simply serve them as a tasty, complimentary side dish to any meal. Either way, if you haven’t already discovered the delicious world of fungi, now is a great time to see what’s fresh and in season! FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT THE CHICO CERTIFIED FARMERS MARKET.

Mushrooms INGREDIENT OF THE MONTH:

Your First Garden

Starting your first vegetable garden? Vegetables can be grown in many places— pots, raised beds, community garden lots, or a small city backyard. Take advantage of the pleasant spring days to evaluate your land and make a plan for summer bounty. Carefully consider the size of your garden and plant only what you can manage. Dream big, but start small. Plan your garden on paper before you get out in the dirt. Thinking through the spacing of your plantings will allow you to get the most yield. Gardens require constant maintenance like weeding, watering and checking for insects and disease. Plan for success. Carefully lay out the rows and distances between plants and plan for trellises and staking. You can expand as you gain experience. Call on the knowledge of other local gardeners. They can help you choose varieties of vegetables that have produced well for them in similar conditions. Every area has some tried and true plants that gardeners love. Wherever you choose to sow your seeds, or place your vegetable starts into the ground, there are a few basic rules to follow. Choose your location wisely by considering the following factors: Light: Vegetables need at least 8 hours of sunlight daily.

Water supply: Locate your garden near a water supply. Summers in Butte County are dry and you will need to provide water to your thirsty plants through some type of irrigation system. The ground should also be fairly level and well drained. Good Soil: Pick up a handful of your soil and squeeze it. If the soil crumbles easily it is ideal and ready for planting. Clay and sandy soils are common in this area so you may need to work something into your soil to improve the quality. Organic soil amendments such as compost, lawn clippings, or peat moss can be helpful. Raised beds allow you to import good soil as an alternative to working with what Mother Nature gave you. Once the planning and planting are complete, I like to do a daily walk about to see what is happening in my garden. It allows me to spot problems early on and enjoy the beauty of the growing veggies. In the end, starting a vegetable garden at home can be easy. Keep it simple at first. Realize that just one tomato plant can provide you with 10 pounds of fruit over a season. Take your time, plan it right and enjoy.

POMEGRANATES:

It’s that time of year again: the sun is peeking out, spring is nearly here, and your New Year’s resolutions have already fallen through—but, no matter! With a garden of fresh fruits and vegetables, you can cultivate healthy eating and happy living year-round. Take a glance at these small-scale crops to discover what plants will fit your garden best.

When to Plant: Plant bare-root trees in late winter–early sprin When to Harvest: 2–3 years after planting; August–October

STRAWBERRIES: When to Plant: Late fall–early sprin When to Harvest: 30–40 days after blossoming.

PEACHES: When to Plant: Late fall–spring. When to Harvest: 2–4 years after planting; June–August. What to Expect: One peach tree can grow up to 25 feet tall and produce more than 60 pounds of fruit in a year. No wonder Chico State treats us to their U-pick harvest each summer! Planting & Caring: Keep your peach tree growing strong by showing it the love and attention it deserves. Trees require scheduled pruning and fertilization to stay healthy—for peach trees, it is recommended to prune in mid-to-late April. A true summer fruit, peaches also prefer full sun instead of shade, and they will grow best in spots where frost won’t settle.

What to Expect: On average, June-bearing plants produce up to a pound of strawberries per foot, Everbearing plants produce up to one half-pound, and Day-neutral plants produce up to threequarters of a pound. Planting & Caring: Like tomatoes, strawberries are sun bums, liking up to 8 hours of sun a day. They need one to two inches of water every week to stay strong, with extra care as they begin to form fruit. Keep those strawberries juicy!

What to Expect: Depending on their age, pomegranate trees can produce between 5 and 70 pounds of fruit! If your yield seems low, you might have to wait a year or two—patience is a virtue. Planting & Caring: Unlike many other plants (and humans), pomegranates prefer hot, dry summers—they can even thrive during droughts! And aside from planting, the trees are fairly lowmaintenance; they just need a little fertilizer and pruning every now and then to keep them going. Tips & Tricks: Put those pruners down! Unless you want more of a shrub, your pomegranate tree needs very little pruning. What to Eat: Try pomegranate oatmeal, spinach and pomegranate salad, or a simple afternoon snack

Tips & Tricks: Do not suffocate your strawberries. Cover the roots like you would with any plant, but make sure that the center reaches light and air—if not, your plant might rot before you before you reap your harvest. What to eat: Try a yogurt parfait, a strawberrybanana smoothie, or a balsamic strawberry salad.

BOK CHOY:

Tips & Tricks: If you have lost a peach tree in the past, resist the urge to plant a new one in the same spot. The old roots of the former tree emit chemicals that might kill the new one!

BROCCOLI:

When to Plant: Late spring or early fall

When to Plant: Early spring or early fall

When to Harvest: 30–60 days after planting, depending on whether you want baby greens or “adult” bok choy

What to eat: Try peach pie, preserves, or spicy peach salsa.

What to Expect: A ten-foot row of broccoli can produce 4–6 pounds

When the Harvest: 65–70 days after planting

Tips & Tricks: Broccoli plants are givers—you can harvest them up to three times in three months; just make sure to cut it the right way. What to Eat: Try broccoli cheddar soup, stir fry, or pasta primavera

Planting and Caring: Like broccoli, bok choy prefers the cold to the heat—unlike broccoli, it’s not picky about whether it lives in the sun or shade. To keep those roots growing, make sure to dampen the soil around your bok choy plants if your area doesn’t get much rain (meaning in NorCal this year, it probably needs it). Tips & Tricks: Claim your bok choy before the heat does: hot weather can cause your plants to go to seed if you don’t harvest them soon enough What to Eat: Try stir fry, slaw, or roasted bok choy

WRITTEN BY EMMA HOPPOUGH

Planting & Caring: Broccoli may prefer the cold weather, but it still needs its Vitamin D: plant broccoli in areas that get full sun, but in seasons where temperatures do not rise past the 60s—in fact, broccoli can grow in below-freezing soil! Try to give your broccoli an inch of water per week, aiming close to the base to grow deep roots.

What to Expect: One plant can produce 2 pounds of bok choy

Jessica Bartlett “What I really love is that every day there’s always something different,” Jessica Bartlett says enthusiastically. Perched on the edge of her seat at the downtown Starbucks, the Chico State graduate is in the middle of describing her photography aesthetic. “Whether it’s a foggy day or a beautiful sunset, everything is always in transition. I love that I’m able to capture the changes.” Just briefly browsing Bartlett’s stunning Instagram gallery, this artistic vision quickly becomes evident. From aerial views of Bidwell Park to action shots of students on the university campus, Bartlett’s happy, warm-tone photos highlight the vibrant beauty that resides in the moments between moments. Though the Bay Area native fell in love with photography in high school, she did not begin seriously pursuing the art until she began working as a student photographer at Chico State. In this role, Bartlett grew more confident in her abilities, a development she attributed largely to the feedback and mentorship she received from university photographer Jason Halley. “One thing he always tells me is that I am ‘responsible for everything in my image,’” Bartlett says. She keeps his advice in mind with every photo she takes, and as a result, her images reflect an attentiveness to every detail. With Halley’s support and her years of experience as a student photographer, Bartlett made the transition from talented hobbyist to full-blown professional.

While she enjoys all different types of shoots, Bartlett especially loves taking aerial photos with the drone she purchased in 2016. To fly commercially, she had to become licensed as a drone operator, a process that involved passing an intensive aeronautical knowledge exam. “It was a lot, but I’m glad that I did it,” she says. With visually arresting bird’s eye views of the Sacramento River or historic Chico sites like Bidwell Mansion, Bartlett’s drone has allowed her to take her photography to the next level. A Chicoan for the past six years, Barlett does not see herself leaving the area anytime soon. “It’s hard to say forever, but for now I’m totally happy,” she says. One thing is for sure, no matter where Bartlett is, she will never be far from her camera. In the future, she plans to continue to capture life’s priceless moments, sharing her unique perspective on the world, one photo at a time. 60

However, after graduating from Chico State with a communications degree in December 2016, Bartlett was unsure what direction her career would take next. “I still wanted to do photography, but I was like, I don’t know where I’m going to go. Then [the university] ended up being able to open up a staff position for me, so now I’m back. And it’s really fun!” she adds, smiling. As a full-time university photographer, Bartlett helps shoot all the photos for the campus, including portraits, events and photos for social media and the web. When she is not shooting for the university, she is taking photos around Chico, covering weddings and events or doing family, engagement or graduation sessions.

BACKPAGE

The first, of a four part series, about juggling the juxtaposition of being a native Chicoan from our Editor-in-Chief, Kevin Dolan.

Then and Now Now and Then There is a picture hanging on the wall in the Kozy Diner. It is one of many in this room. This particular picture stopped me in my tracks some 20 years ago. It is a black and white photo looking from above some unknown rooftop, North, down Broadway. I do not know the year but the dirt street and horse drawn carriages are a certain clue. While I was trying to get my bearings straight as to which of the cross streets were visible, and whether the La Grande Hotel sat across the street from the city plaza or not, something more intriguing caught my eye. I figured it must be 5th and 6th streets though it did not matter because each were flowing streams heading west towards the Sacramento river. Staring at the photo, I saw a lone figure wading in the middle of the 5th street nearly waist deep. I do not consider myself a Chico historian. As a Chico Native, I look at it as more of a witness. My mind’s eye is full of snapshots from my youth to today. Not surprisingly then, I will bounce back and forth between my yesterdays and todays as a caring witness of this intriguing town. I have stood on the corner of 4th and Salem, looking across the street at the PG&E office, with a small black and white photo of a quaint two story white home with a steep staircase leading to a large front porch. I squint my eyes, hold the picture up, and try to see this house instead of the plain facade of this office. The house in the picture

was the house I lived in as a two year old. My Dad’s office was two blocks away on the second story of what we called the Lee Pharmacy building on the corner of 3rd and Broadway where a Starbucks is the current resident. My dad owned this building. His office was on the second floor. My office is on the second floor of the building two down from Starbucks. From my window, I can witness the progress on the remodel of LaSalle’s. When I was a young child, my mom would take my brother and me downtown on a Saturday afternoon to have a Coke with my dad. My dad would be finishing up a weekly “meeting” he had with several other prominent locals. Unfazed by the meeting of these older gentlemen, we would kick off our tennies and run and slide on the polished hardwood floor. That is in stark contrast to the sticky, begrimed floor of the recent LaSalle’s on an early Sunday morning. These parallel images keep dancing around in my busy mind. So, for now, I will leave you with this thought. I am wondering if the new and improved bar and restaurant I witness outside my office window will actually be gleefully haunted by the ghost of Ross Lawler.

Until then... 63
