asangga party list representative Teodorico T. Haresco and UP ISSI director Prof. Nestor O. Rañeses signed last Wednesday, February 8, a memorandum of agreement that would allocate 1.5 million pesos to UP ISSI for the establishment of a small business innovation center. The agreement authorizes ISSI to “manage the use of the funds for the implementation of the program”. Also present during the signing at the Batasang Pambansa Complex in Quezon City was Prof. Ferdinand G. Manegdeg of the UP College of Engineering, who is also an ISSI consultant. A week ago, Congressman Haresco announced the approval day of LEAP 2012: The National Conference on Technology Innovation, Quality and Productivity held in UP National College of Public Administration and Governance.

SERDEF presents research agenda at ISSI

UP ISSI’s major private sector partner the Small Enterprises Research and Development Foundation (SERDEF) presented its research agenda for the year during its research colloquium held last Wednesday in ISSI. SERDEF research and information committee member Malou Lopez, who is also a faculty member of the UP College of Business Administration, presented one of the ongoing major research projects of the Foundation. Project Minerva or “An Assessment of Product Strategies of Selected Micro and Small Entrepreneurs in the Philippines” is an ongoing study that will probe on the unique product development practices and needs for assistance of micro and small entrepreneurs. Another ongoing project presented during the colloquium was “Channeling Remittances for Enterprise Development” (CRED), an action research that proceeded from the earlier research study entitled “Channeling Remittances for Development: A Study Towards Creating Model Mechanisms.”

In the pipeline are a module writing project on improving the teaching enterprising society by teaching entrepreneurship values and concepts at the preschool level, and a workshop on research proposal preparation for members of the Entrepreneur Educators Association of the Philippines. In the conceptualization stage is a baseline study of micro, small and medium enterprises and an impact study of micro-credit programs.

Dietitian talks about wellbeing,

R

uth Agnes Manalo, a dietitian and nutritionist at the University Health Service (UHS) of UP Diliman, talked about proper nutrition in the workplace in a short seminar held last Friday, January 27. According to Manalo, the workplace is where employees spend a third of their day or half of their waking hours and is therefore “a suitable place for health intervention”. A balance diet and adequate exercise are necessary whether the person is in the workplace or elsewhere.

While stressing that “there is no good nor bad food” she also warned that everything must be eaten in moderation. She emphasized the advantages of having an annual physical checkup, of eating fruits and vegetables, of drinking 12 glasses of water every day, and of exercising for even just 30 minutes a day.

Consistent with this core value, six staff members were recently given special recognition for their performance and contributions to various activities of the Institute. They were: Teresita Santos, most valuable person as the 2011 Managers Course (MC) program manager “for trailblazing the formal graduation ceremony of the 95th MC that sets a new standard for the closing program of succeeding MCs”. Ian de Vera and Bernie Villaluna, “for persistently architecting and continually improving the design and contents of the UPISSI website”.

The committee deemed it opportune to hold the seminar this January to give the staff a renewed attention to their wellbeing and improve their eating habits to keep themselves healthy for the rest of the year. The committee is eyeing another event in February, this time to promote a healthy heart.
