More ASEAN countries were included in the second week of the pilot phase of the project being implemented by UP ISSI in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry Bureau of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development. UP ISSI’s Ferdz Manegdeg and Joanna Laddaran flew to Thailand and Malaysia respectively last 23 March to conduct the pilot internships in the respective host enterprises.

UP ISSI, Indonesia’s Budi Luhur Institute ink partnership
W
ith the advent of the ASEAN Integration 2015, UP ISSI is very much in sync with partnerships that will be happening among ASEAN Member States (AMS). Thus, last 21 February 2014, ISSI and the Budi Luhur Institute of Health Sciences of Cimahi, Indonesia signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to pursue common interest in entrepreneurship and management training programs, faculty and student exchanges, research, and internship program.

Custom-designed training to ‘EMPOWER’ top officers, employees of finance firm held
UP ISSI in cooperation with its major private-sector partner the Small Enterprises Research and Development Foundation recently conducted a capability enhancement course entitled Enhancing Managerial Performance Through Ownership of Responsibilities for the Radiowealth Finance Company at the New Horizon Hotel in Mandaluyong City. The course, aptly dubbed as the EMPOWER RFC Course, aimed to align the targets and key performance indicators from the branch to the district, to the region, and up to the national level. The course also served as a review of RFC’s five-year plan which started in 2011.

Rañeses picked up pieces of trash removed dried leaves to clear the openings of the sewers that stretched across the street. The collected garbage could cause serious flooding along the way and near the area during a heavy downpour.
From 13 to 15 March, 25 RFC employees, including assistant vicepresidents and regional managers, participated in the course. They attended lectures, underwent workshops and made the validation of the SWOTT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats and trends) analyses as well as the SIPOC (suppliers, inputs, process, outputs, customers) diagram made at the regional branches and at the head office. These led towards the accomplishment of an organizationwide operations map at the end of the three-day course.

This is already the sixth course that UP ISSI has conducted for RFC. The first two were the Leadership and Marketing Workshops in 2011. UP ISSI then followed through with a ladderized program in 2013 through the conduct of two Basic Supervisory and Managerial Enhancement Courses for both Luzon, and Visayas and Mindanao branch Managers, and the Advanced Leadership and Management Course for district managers.
P ISSI in cooperation with its major privatesector partner the Small Enterprises Research and Development Foundation just released the maiden issue of the Philippine Journal on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in both hard and soft copies.
UP ISSI starts impact study of IGLFfunded PlanET training
Three peer-reviewed papers and three proceedings of very recent conferences organized by the Institute all covering topics like enterprise development, entrepreneurship education, human resource management and small and medium enterprise policy development are presented in the first issue. The contributors are Michael Capiña, Ma. Tessa A. Llaguno, Verna Liza L. Capiña and Faustino Q. Arrienda II, Lily P. Custodio, as well as ISSI’s Ian Jester M. de Vera and Juli F. Cardillo.
T
he impact evaluation study of the Planning for Expanding Business Training (PlanET) is now underway. With the goal of collecting inputs to determine the effectiveness of the said program, UP ISSI started face-to-face interviews in January with participants who completed training. Since the beginning of the study, a total of 80 respondents had already been interviewed from fieldwork done in Metro Manila, Northern Luzon, Southern Luzon, Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan and Negros Occidental. The UP ISSI research team is also set to undertake fieldwork in General Santos, Surigao Del Sur, Surigao Del Norte, Agusan Del Norte and Agusan Del Sur in the coming months. Data tabulation of survey responses has already been started.

The students interned at the IT and Enterprise Innovation Division (ITEID) of the Institute since November last year. They were supervised by their mentor, ITEID division head Ian de Vera. Among the notable projects which the interns accomplished during their stint in the Institute included: • improvement of UP ISS online registration system for its training programs from version 1.2 to 1.3 • design and development of a subdomain website for the Training and Entrepreneurship Education Division (TEED) • design and development of the website of the UP Office of the Vice-President for Administration Supply and Property Management Office • improvement of of the UP ISSI electronic library from version 1.0 to 2.0 • development of the UP ISSI Online Weekly Accomplishment Report • development of the UP ISSI online reservation system for its facilities and rooms, and • development of websites in the UP ISSI electronic marketplace. Besides the ITEID staff, also present during the simple internship closing and turnover ceremony with the students were UP ISSI officers headed by its director Prof. Nestor O.
