It’s not about where you come from, but rather where you’re going. Sure you’ve heard this saying over a million times by now. However, you have to admit that it does have a way of sticking with you regardless of how often you may hear it. It can essentially be applied to our everyday lifestyle. Doesn’t matter your age, race, profession, nor “GENDER”. Meet the Pioneering African-American politician Shirley Chisholm who started out as a teacher. Yes I said teacher. You see we all have to have a starting point as I mentioned earlier, but the beauty of you starting off at a certain place in life is that it doesn’t mean you have to stay there. Born on November 30th, 1924 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Shirley Chisholm received her Bachelor’s Degree from Brooklyn College. Mrs. Chisholm went onto to earn her MA from Columbia University’s Teachers College. In the world we live in today a Bachelor’s Degree is essentially like having a high school diploma. Sad, but so very true you need more. More education, more will power, more support from your family & friends, more self-motivation from yourself. Chisholm quickly realized that and understood that a Bachelor’s degree would only get her so far. She was very distinctive in her rise to political dominance. She may have been an educator, but she used her resources to launch her political career by volunteering for white political clubs in Brooklyn. She served as an educational consultant for the New York City’s division of Day Care. Now imagine being an African-American during the late 1960’s. Not only being African-American, but being an African-American Woman. With all things considered, you already have the odds stacked against you with just those two factors alone. You have two choices be content with where you are in life, or take a stand and spark change. In 1968 Chisholm would go on to run for U.S. House of Representatives from New York State’s 12th district. In 1972, history was made again when she became one of the first black women of a major party to run for presidential nomination. She served a total of seven terms in house before deciding to step down for good. Chisholm went on to cofound the National Congress of Black Women and even campaigned for Jesse Jackson’s presidential bid in the mid 1980’s. She began her career as a teacher and even continued to teach at Mt. Holyoke College in 1983. It was obvious that she had a passion for teaching and always found her way back to doing so. Shirley Chisholm may have left us in the year 2005 at the age of 80 years old, but her impact remains intact here in the year 2017. Breaking down barriers was just her way of paving the way for future African American women to be bold in their beliefs and to remember that no dream is too big. She may have started out as just a little girl from Brooklyn, N.Y. nevertheless she went on to become a teacher, writer, politician, and above all other things a sign on continuous hope that things can and will be better for our beautiful black queens of the world. #BLACKHISTORYISOURHISTORY By: Julian D. Multi-talented Creez & IAM HERO TOUR

They call him HERO. He is a man of many hats. An Entrepreneur, Entertainer, and soon to be Humanitarian from the big city of Long Beach, CA. He considers himself as both an Artist and Lyricist. As an Artist some days he might want to make a lyrical song, then other days he might make a song that is about his flow or his way with words. The Kryptonite Ep is the name of his current project soon to be released. The concept of the project is about all the things in his life that could be a Kryptonite to him like Love, Family, Friends, the neighborhood he grew up in. The process of creating this project was fun. He has features like Reality Jones, Taio Cruz, Ryan Anthony, Kevin Writer and Producers like Rick Roc, Drumma Boy, King Dave, and Reo who helped with the EP process. The Best Advice He has received came from Quincy Jones, in a meeting. He was told: “To Have a Detailed Vision, Don’t Just Tell GOD ‘I just want to be happy, you got to know what happiness is to you!” Those words as well as growing up in Long Beach inspired him to make his current music. During his childhood he remembers seeing Nate Dogg as a kid in his Auntie Kims’ living room with the bandanna on just like the in videos. So, people like Snoop Dogg and Warren G are like family to him. He was the little kid right there watching them

shoot videos! He shares that out of all the songs he wrote, he says his favorite is the song he did with Kehlani called: Flight 420. Its crazy and it just feels like he’s on a plane ride! Since he started music he would say he has done over 200 shows, maybe more! The most epic time he ever had on stage was when he was on the Independent Grind Tour with his band and Tech N9ne came out on their set with a pitcher of his signature drink KC TEA and everybody went crazy!! If he could do a song with anybody, he would choose Kendrick Lamar because he likes to touch on the type of topics he likes to rap about and he is also a very conscience person. He relates that what makes him different as an Artist is the thrill of everything that a new rapper wants to do like get a chain or buy his momma a car. He was able to do that at a early age. So his integrity and movement are different. The future is extremely bright for this talented Artist, He his currently working on a new music project and a new clothing brand soon to launch on www. IamHeroTour.com. Along with creating more music he is looking to lock in more sponsors for his IAM HERO TOUR company. He also wants to add some more skateboard competitions in Long Beach, Compton, Venice, Hollywood (ect) for the summer of 2017. Blessed by Jalysa (Lady) Remedy

“Hidden Artistic Compositions...”

T

errence Keith has two businesses, one for each of the hats he wears. The Black Tower IT Services, which he has dabbled in since 1997, and Dejanael Photowerx, formerly known as Dejanael Photography, which he started, in earnest, last year. The IT business grew out of him crashing his first home computer. He needed to get it back up and running before his wife got up the next day, and things kind of progressed after that. Dejanael started out of requests for portraits and wedding shoots, and it has progressed from there. While he has only been shooting “professionally” for about 6½ years, and only shooting as a business for one, he has carried a camera with him pretty much everywhere since 1988. During that time it was film, and he loved it because there were so many things you had to be mindful of; unlike digital, you couldn’t delete and re-shoot. Oftentimes you wouldn’t even have a second chance, so you had to really know what you were doing before the shutter button was pressed. His first full-blown “photo-shoot” was a boudoir session for a dear friend. He remembers that he was nervous because he wanted it Blessed by Jalysa (Lady) Remedy

to be perfect. He also remembers there was this one shot, that she wanted to do, and it just happened! One of the most amazing photographs he has ever taken. He still marvels at it from time to time. Terrence shares that Landscape Photography is his passion. He loves finding ruins, or anything that is abandoned. He’s really partial to looking at common everyday things as if they are hidden artistic compositions. He fell into Portrait Photography because of family and friends requesting portraits pretty often. Then he found Fashion Photography, which he has grown to love, by a total accident but he is really digging it right now. In the world of photography he doesn’t consider himself “gifted” at all. Honestly, he claims he is kinda soso, but he loves what he does, and he loves how people feel about his work. He has never had any formal education, but he has no problem doing research, and asking questions. He has connected with so many amazing artists and photographers that have helped him improve his craft, that he can’t even begin to name them all! There are only a few things that he considers “challenges” during shoots. The first one is MAKEUP. When it is done right, he can deal with almost anything else. When it’s wrong, well, he gets a headache.

Sometimes, less really is more. The other peeve is posing. He doesn’t mind if the model isn’t experienced, but if they consider themselves a pro but posing them is like “manipulating a burlap bag of rocks”, then things aren’t going to go smoothly. Lastly, he finds bad attitudes a major creative turn-off. If they come in like they own the place and begin their conversation like he is their butler, the session is not going to go well, if at all. Photography is FUN, and for him, it’s going to stay that way! There are so many people he would love to photograph, but if he could pick only one well-known person, today, it would be former President Obama. If for nothing else, he thinks that conversation would be amazing, even if they did NOT say a word about politics. He has a lot of respect for former President Obama as a person, just watching his interactions with people and with kids. He’s got what he calls “The Grandpa Gene” and he reminds Terrence of his father-in-law in that respect. The photographs would be a treasure to him, but that conversation? Priceless. He has done a lot of shoots in various places but if he could do a photo-shoot anywhere in the world it would definitely be Tuscany. He relates that the reason

is because he and his wife watched “Under the Tuscan Sun” and fell in love with the region. He’s a hardcore suburbanite, but he loves the rustic appeal of that entire region. It’s as if time just kind of… stopped there. It’s romantic. The projects or events that are emerging is the anticipated collaboration with he and a fellow photographer. They are working on a coffee table book, which has him super excited. He is also going to be revamping some work he did for the anniversary of Nat Turner’s Insurrection. That project was on display in Norfolk a couple of years ago, but this time it’s going to be more exciting, and he is going to dig into the history, and the artistry of the project a lot more. When asked if he had any other gifts or talents he laughs saying how he used to be a pretty decent singer, and a pretty good saxophonist too. He smiles saying that he should have been a musician, but life had other plans. His Advice To Up and Coming Photographers “Don’t forget that photography is about expression. Don’t get too wrapped up in being super-technical, unless that’s your thing. Knowledge of your craft is good, but being able to evoke a feeling in your audience is even better. Focus on pictures that put the viewer IN the moment, pull them into the story.”
